Wonthaggi Club members celebrated at the Woolamai racecourse. 262544

On track for club birthday WONTHAGGI & District Combined Probus Club recently celebrated the club’s 25th birthday at the Woolamai & District Racing Club Racecourse. Thanks to kind weather, members were able to celebrate the milestone with a picnic lunch. Rotary Club of Wonthaggi president Ray McCurry presented Wonthaggi & District Combined Probus Club president Val Stringer with a commemorative 25th birthday certificate from Probus South Pacific. Ms Stringer also read a congratulatory letter received from Probus South Pacific Head Office.

Val then invited life member, foundation committee member and former club president Bruce Campbell to cut a commemorative birthday cake provided by member Jan Cheshire. Club foundation members Sheila Campbell and Flo Crawford were also in attendance. After a rousing rendition of the Wonthaggi Probus own club song led by singing group coordinator Pauline Hession and members of the club’s singing group, members enjoyed the chance to catch up following Covid-19 lockdowns. Games of bocce and Finska Kubb were

played adjacent to the course with member Pat Sanderink being declared Finska Kubb champion. Outdoor games are a regular feature of the club’s outdoor meetings and caravan and cabin activities. At the conclusion of the games, members enjoyed their delicious lunch packs provided by the Blue Wren Cafe, Wonthaggi. The club also wishes to thank the Woolamai & District Racing Club for their hospitality and generous use of the club’s facilities. Wonthaggi & District Combined Probus

Club is actively recruiting new members and meets in the Wonthaggi Workmens Club at 9.45 am on the third Tuesday of each month, so if you’re retired, semiretired or retiring soon or new to the area and looking to meet new people while enjoying a varied range of social activities, contact us today. With most of the former committee members continuing in their respective roles, the meeting went very well. We welcomed back president Anne Vick for her second year in office and wish her well for 2022. For us, the same as the rest of

Victoria, things have been a struggle and faces have only appeared on a screen during Zoom meetings. However, we are preparing for a return to normal and dates and venues are being booked for our usual competitions. The golfers always have the most wonderful time in October each year and this will be much looked forward to, the same as the bowls tournament. There is so much to be planned

with our Friendship Day at Pakenham Racecourse, so sadly being deferred and finally cancelled for the second year, but we shall be there in all our glory with competitions for best dressed lady, best dressed gentleman and best dressed couple. Then we also have a 500 card competition to look forward to as well. Please keep eyes open for all the information in this issue of the Probian as the Friendship Day applications close in May.

Busy calendar ahead for members THE Probus Club of Anderson’s Inlet has a busy calendar lined up for 2022. Members will visit the Dolphin Research Institute at Hastings on

president’s message

Looking forward to meetings and outings in 2022 The President Anne Vick WELCOME EVERYONE, Hopefully all members have experienced a great Christmas and prosperous New Year and are looking forward to catching up with fellow Probian members in 2022. Since our last newspaper, many

additional members should have held end of year get togethers. At Croydon Park Probus Club we held our Christmas lunch at Yering Meadows with 99 attending. After lunch Santa arrived and gave out gifts for those with lucky table tickets including two hampersone donated my our local member of Parliament Michael Sukkar and the other donated by our club. Also, some lucky members had smiley faces under their plate and received a poinsettia planter which had served as a table decoration. Over all the day was a great success.

We are now looking forward to more outings this year, although it hasn’t been a great start as several clubs were to attend Moulin Rouge which was cancelled (again) due to Covid. We may have to be a little patient for another few weeks till everything settles down but with a lot of people already having booster shots, we should be a little safer. We at PAV are looking forward to holding some amazing events this year, and would appreciate all members contributing their knowledge and help where possible to make it beneficial

and exciting for members to attend our quarterly meetings. Our next meeting will be in March at the Mulgrave Country Club, God willing and supposing Covid hasn’t shut us down again. We are really looking forward to holding all our meetings as planned this year, especially our friendship and golf days that were cancelled last year. May you all stay safe and Covid free. Yours in friendship Anne Vick

Lorne delights day trippers Pamela Duthie COVER STORY ON a very overcast morning (Monday 8 November, 2021) 14 travellers from the Combined Probus Club of Belmont, under the guidance of Trips and Tours Officer Helen Barry, set off from the Victorian Railway’s Fruit Shack Bus Stop, High Street, Belmont, for three hours at the popular seaside town of Lorne on the Great Ocean Road. All were using their free seniors train tickets. There was much chatting on board the comfortable VLine coach as they wended their way through Grovedale, the new suburb of Armstrong Creek, the surfing towns of Torquay, Jan Juc, Anglesea, Aireys Inlet and Fairhaven to the township of Lorne. Unfortunately there was no sunshine on the expansive seascape as they travelled around the coast so hence no photos of the seaside. On arrival around noon at Lorne’s Information Centre, they formed a couple of groups and searched on foot for places to have their lunch and grab a coffee and/ or icecream along the main street. One group ended up at the Lorne Hotel at the top of the street, the others lower down. There was a lot of choice despite the Covid problems/closures.

Catch up time with Joan Cashin, Jeanette Rowe, Bill & Angela Thompson, Lorraine Zaunbrecher, Marie Benney, Pam Duthie, Eileen Pollard, Jan Lawton, Sue O’Shea, Ron Cashin and John O’Shea. Although cloudy, the weather was good. No worry about crowds! Op shops were very popular as were dress and craft shops. Masks had to be worn in shops and one had to do the QR code as well as show proof of one’s double vaccination.

Lorne Swimmers’ Statue opposite Information Centre attracted the attention of Marie Benney, Eileen Pollard, Angela Thompson, Pam Duthie and Judy Williamson.

A novelty to all was Selfie Lane just off the main street. Everyone wanted their photo taken there! Apart from having lunch, a cuppa and lots of browsing through the shops, they made time to check out the Tourist

Information Centre’s displays and to chat with the very informative volunteers before catching the returning coach around quarter to four, worn out but content. It was a lovely, relaxing day thanks to Helen Barry. Monday, 14 February, 2022 The Victorian Probian 3

PAV Friendship Day returns FUN, friendship and fellowship will be the order of the day on Monday 27 June when we hold our Friendship Day at the Pakenham Racing Club. This is a popular and very exciting occasion to the point that last year some clubs initially overbooked their tables, which meant other clubs were excluded. As it happens sometimes in life, Covid meant that we all became equally disappointed. Hopefully all will be well in 2022. So start planning what to wear, you may be selected to win: Best dressed lady. Best dressed gentleman. Best dressed couple. Throughout the day prizes will be drawn, so keep your lucky door number handy. A delicious two course luncheon will be served and afternoon tea will keep us going through the exciting afternoon. The horse racing at regular intervals during the event certainly keeps us busy and creates an opportunity for a little gambling for those who like to indulge, whilr even just the beauty of these animals racing is enough to create much cheering. Initial bookings must be kept to a maximum of three tables for each club, allowing a fairer opportunity for other clubs to attend this wonderful day amongst their friends in Probus. Bookings must be made via e-mail to enable us to keep records for contact. Email joanandlouvogels@bigpond.com

DEMAND for new property solutions driven by housing affordability and rental crisis has paved the way for a build-to-rent boutique over 50s lifestyle communities. Development approval has been granted for a long-term lifestyle rental community in Yarrawonga. Developed and managed by Providence Lifestyle Yarrawonga, residents will be able to lease one, two or three-bedroom homes in a secure, gated community for between 10 and 19 years, with no entry or exit fees or quarterly rent inspections and no market reviews for the term of the lease. Providence Yarrawonga Director Dean Cook said the concept addressed a gap in the market and would give seniors struggling with housing affordability, security or rental issues a fresh option. “Many over 50s don’t want to tie up their money in property - or it doesn’t suit their financial position - and many are reticent to rent short-term because it doesn’t offer them enough security and certainty, and moving house every 12 months is harder when you’re over 50,” said Mr Cook. “Build-to-rent boutique lifestyle communities address these issues and operate in just the same way as renting a private home so, in time, they will play a part in easing the rental crisis for seniors.” Residents have access to communal facilities including a clubhouse, alfresco area, and bowling green, and pets are allowed as each 6-star energy rated home is on its own fenced lot with a private garden and entertaining area. Mr Cook said the project was

attracting a high level of interest from downsizers, right-sizers and retirees who want to move from the city. “We believe these build-to-rent boutique lifestyle communities are the way of the future and predict they’ll become commonplace, just as build-tobuy lifestyle villages have,” he said. “The tenure security, facilities and companionship on offer caters to a growing but underserviced demographic. “We’re also finding the pandemic has prompted many people to place a greater emphasis on safe social connection,

further boosting demand for community living spaced in the right way and detached housing brings a more spacious resort feel than high-rise apartments.” Weekly rental fees start from $309 a week and there are no rates or taxes. Providence Rental Lifestyle Community Yarrawonga is expected to start construction early next year. Head to yarrawonga. providencelifestyle.com.au for further details or contact Karen Van der Steeg, Yarrawonga lifestyle coordinator on 0475 755 981.

Jan’s quilt of many colours JAN Stewart of Melbourne’s Bearbrass Probus has been quilting for 45 years, since her training days as a home economics teacher. “I get excited about a new pattern and start trying it out but a lot of my experiments become smaller versions of their intended result,” she says. But her latest is a beauty -- 65 inch square (US measure) or 165cm in Log Cabin style, involving logs around an internal square. She made it for her granddaughter Lucy, aged six, who’d inquired why a quilt hadn’t been made for her. It took Jan about 18 months on and off, collecting, trimming and machine sewing 1100 patches while locked down at her Southbank apartment. Most of the pieces (about 3cm wide) were offcuts and leftovers in her cupboard from previous quilts. “I’ve accumulated every colour of the rainbow in every sort of pattern, but I also bought a few squares from patchwork shops. I like my quilts to have a scrappy look. These show that a lot of love and thought goes into the blending of colours, textures and tesselations, rather than a quick machine-made look.” Her friendly helper is her Brother VQ2400 sewing machine which she’s been using for five years. But she’s also got a quilt almost finished that’s entirely sewn by hand. Jan is also a dab hand at blackwork, bobbin lace, tatting, crocheting, knitting,

macrame, weaving – all of the gentle arts. Her other great pastime is cooking – when Probus caught up with her she was busy putting trays of individual lemon meringue

pies in the oven at her son’s home in Torquay. Footnote: Melbourne Bearbrass Probus launched in 2020 a week before the

state’s first lockdown with 17 members and has now grown to 70 members. Inquiries: bearbrassprobus.org or contact Bearbrassprobus@gmail.com

Christmas picnic in the park TO celebrate our freedom to gather with our friends from Probus, the Glen Waverley Combined Probus Club organised a Christmas picnic in the park for our December meeting. Eighty-four members arrived at Jells Park at 10.30am on 8 December with coffee in hand and ready to sample the cake the club provided to start the festivities. With the noise level increasing, it was obvious everyone was enjoying catching up. It was time for the president Terry Norgate to bring proceedings to order and provide an overview of future activities planned for 2022 including a spit roast in the park, dine outs, barefoot bowling, trip to Kangaroo Island, and a caravan and cabin trip to Bendigo on top of all our regular gatherings. Terry then introduced all the new members who had joined the Club during the year and had been inducted at the monthly Zoom meetings the club held. They were all presented with their certificates, badges and Probus card and each spoke briefly about their background with all of them saying how welcoming everyone was and they were looking forward to becoming active participants at club activities. Jim and Kay Peters, Wilma and Bob Wright, Barry and Sue Sturman, Julie Wilkinson, Karen Wilson, Andy and Sandy Hamilton and Rick and Maggie Grounds were welcomed into the club with applause. As Probus Day happened during lockdown in Victoria we were unable to properly celebrate. As part of the celebrations, the management committee

Glen Waverley Combined Probus Club enjoyed picnic in the park. had unanimously decided to award a club membership service award to Margaret Lemondine who, as welfare officer had organised her committee to make weekly phone calls to our members during lockdowns which was greatly appreciated by the members and helped the club to grow and feel connected during that time. Terry presented the award and Margaret accepted her award with two of her committee members Judy Barton and Rosemary Pounder and was thanked with a round of applause.

It was now onto the picnic - the club supplied everyone with a picnic box to thank them for their support during the past 12 months and being so positive in joining club activities. Everyone went into groups to eat, drink and catch up and there was a lot of mingling and happy banter, suggesting this was an activity enjoyed by everyone despite the somewhat inclement weather which finally warmed up to complete a very enjoyable day and great way to celebrate the end of the year and the festive season.

Picnic packs were supplied for lunch.

Notable Maldon journey Our destination, Maldon, was Australia’s first notable town, so designated by the National Trust in 1965. The houses and shops are maintained as 19th century buildings, many with the iron lacework typical of that time. The town still has reminders of the gold mining carried out from 1853, such as the Beehive Chimney which looms over the town’s streets. We had an excellent lunch served at the Maldon Hotel, a charming 19th century building . After lunch there was a little time to explore the shops, some specialising in craftwork and materials and, of course, a lolly shop. Then it was travelling back to Glen Waverley by bus after a great day out.

AFTER six months of hibernation, 17 members of the Ladies Probus Club of Glen Waverley, accompanied by 35 members of three other local clubs, travelled by bus to Castlemaine then took the heritage Victorian Goldfields Railway to Maldon. This is a steam train staffed by volunteers which runs between Castlemaine and Maldon on Wednesdays and Sundays. It makes its way on a branch line via Muckelford and stopped several times, perhaps to pick up wood for the boiler or maybe just for maintenance. The countryside is very beautiful with tall timbers and bird life -fairy wrens flitted about the tracks at one of our stops.

New Year mystery trip fun ON Wednesday 12 January 35 members of the Ladies Probus Club of Glen Waverley had their annual mystery trip. After a pickup from the Village Green Hotel at 9.30am we travelled to Geelong for a 40 minute visit to the Amazing Mill Markets consisting of stalls of all kinds: antiques, fine china, bric a brac, arts and crafts and old wares among other things. Then it was off to the Geelong Boathouse for a delicious lunch of fish, chips and salad. Some of our more energetic members took a stroll along the foreshore before boarding our coach which took us to Queenscliff where we boarded the Searoad Ferry across to Sorrento. It was a perfect day and we enjoyed the smooth crossing from the ferry’s lounge. Then it was back on the coach for the return to the Village Green, arriving a little after 5pm. Our comfortable coach was provided by Melbourne on the Move who also assisted with advice and, of course, it was the support of the club’s members which made it all possible.

Bairnsdale’s Christmas lunch FIFTY –two members of the Probus Club of Bairnsdale and their spouses gathered at the Central Hotel in Lakes Entrance on Wednesday 8 December for the club’s annual Christmas lunch. Members were welcomed by president John Haylock and his wife Barbara and were served a complimentary Pimms cocktail as a thank you for coming back gesture from the hotel as we had to change venues last year because of Covid restrictions. On the table were gift Christmas boxes made and filled by secretary June Owen as a Christmas treat and helium balloons and bon bons as decoration. To be able to celebrate Christmas was a bonus with some meetings cancelled

during the year. This seemed to make the celebration extra special, and the usual chatter was around the room, especially when the 15 raffle prizes were drawn. Many were trying to find out what was in the package before their selection but most to no avail. One member would be surprised when getting home to find that what they thought was a bottle of whiskey, was in fact wine in a whiskey box! The meal was excellent with a three meats’ roast followed by either pavlova or Christmas pudding. The club has been going to the Central Hotel for several years now and it always gets the tick of approval from all members for meals, service and venue.

Bairnsdale members enjoyed catching up for their Christmas celebrations.

Signs of the Christmas season were everywhere.

Congratulations to the many raffle winners.

Bairnsdale members squeezed under the barbecue shelter to avoid the rain.

Food and fellowship were on the menu.

Rain couldn’t dampen the spirits of the travellers.

Damp outing to Buchan Caves scenic drive they then knew why Kerrie had picked this spot. The scenery was magnificent on the way into town, green grass, the trees were recovering from the fire damage and low cloud hovered above just to enhance the setting. The Buchan Caves area is very popular with tourists of all ages. We saw a coach load of obviously elderly citizens enjoying their coffee following a walk through the caves, groups of school children and visitors from other countries. And to add to that, 22 members of the Bairnsdale Probus Club. What an asset for the region! Members enjoyed their trip to Buchan.

THE skies looked very ominous as we headed towards Buchan for our barbecue lunch. But as we neared the town of Buchan the weather cleared and we thought we had dodged a bullet. But not for long. As we enjoyed fellowship and friendship, waiting for the meat to cook, the heavens opened up and we had steady rain, but as it was only rain without any wind, we all managed to gather under the shelter. Nobody got wet, but we were a little cramped. But how good was it to enjoy the ambience of the parkland at the Buchan Caves. Woodlands Ladies give back LADIES from the Woodlands Ladies Probus Club of Sunbury, Victoria were asked by our very proactive past secretary Avril Winduss to support an endeavour to make up Dignity Bags for ladies in crisis, whether from flood, fire, drought, family violence and any other reason. Avril asked the ladies to donate larger handbags and items such as shampoo, conditioner, soaps, tissues, toothpaste and brushes, hair bushes and combs, face washers, etc. The response was overwhelming and following our December meeting, Avril, our meeter and greeter Yvonne Driscoll and president Val Jordan put together about 55 bags full to capacity with necessary items for use when needed most. These were then delivered to the Sunbury Bunnings store for distribution as required. President Val thanked all members for making this project a wonderful success.

Woodlands Ladies packed dignity bags to support women in crisis.

East Malvern hits the road

Ernie’s ideas are great AN ideas man, that’s our Ernie. Last year the East Malvern Combined Probus Club celebrated Probus Day by giving each member a “we are thinking of you” pack. This was well received by all as we were in lockdown and not allowed to meet as we normally do. In 2021 once again we were in lockdown and wondering what we could do for Probus Day in October. Our ideas man came up with a perpetual trophy- East Malvern Combined Probus Club Inc. Probarian of The Year. A new winner every year. Ernie said, “The award was an idea that was generated by thinking what could be done every year to recognise a member of the club for their contribution to the club.” The winner of the trophy would be chosen by the club president with the criteria: A financial member of the club. A member who has made a significant contribution to the club over an extended period of time. The person must epitomise the Probus ideals of fun, friendship and fellowship. Ernie Brigham was chosen as the winner for 2021/2022. Ernie has a very dynamic personality and has been involved in the club since May 2009. He has been president, newsletter editor, toolbox manager (index of tradies cards provided by members), website manager, movie night coordinator, dine out and outings coordinator, dinner dance organiser and recently become one of the digital mentors for the club.

· · ·

Since joining the club he has published 135 newsletters - not bad for someone who suffers from dyslexia - held movie nights over six years and organised five dinner dances. He has helped two other clubs to set up their websites as well as assisting Probus Association Victoria with their website. Ernie was honoured for being chosen. “You don’t do things for accolades,” he said. His children are very proud of him receiving the award. Sandy, Ernie’s wife said, “I’m thrilled, especially for his efforts over the past two years.” It’s ironic that Ernie organised the perpetual trophy not knowing he would be the first member to be awarded the trophy. Sue Quick the president said, “This was a very difficult task as there are so many deserving members in the club.” Covid restrictions prevented the immediate handing over of the East Malvern Combined Probus Club Probarian of the Year to Ernie until 8 October. A very small group including resident Sue Quick, membership officer John Quick, safety officer Sal Tesoriero, publicity officer Aileen Tesoriero, Ernie Brigham and his wife Sandy meet in a park and Sue Quick congratulated Ernie on being the first East Malvern Combined Probus Club Probarian. planned for the day. Before we knew it, we were in Geelong. Boy, that journey was quick. It was still raining and the weather forecast for the day was for more of the same. Once again John performed his magic as tour director and found a large barbecue shelter in the Botanical gardens for us to have morning tea. This was followed by a coach tour of Geelong and then a drive to Leopold for lunch at the Sportsman’s Club. Lunch was excellent and served very promptly. So far so good, but what was next? A short drive to Queenscliff and the coach was on the ferry to Portsea. Many members were

fearful of a rough crossing but there was no need to worry, the crossing was smooth considering the wind and rain outside. Once on the other side of Port Phillip Bay we took a scenic route along the beach road before joining the freeway for the last leg of our tour. Fellowship and friendships renewed, we returned home to await the next outing. On Friday 12 November the members gathered in the East Malvern RSL carpark in the cold and rain to await the arrival of our coach. Huddling under the barbecue shelter members smiled and chatted oblivious to the rain and cold. Victoria had reached 80 per cent double vaccination and some of the state restrictions were removed, thus allowing our club to arrange an impromptu coach tour for members. Waverley Ladies turn 30 THE Ladies Probus Club of Waverley Central celebrated 30 years of fellowship, friendship and fun last year. As with many events in 2021, the celebration was delayed in August, September and October by lockdown 6 but the 11 November meeting provided a chance to get together in person to enjoy the social opportunity and to celebrate. The official birthday cake was cut by three foundation members, June Hood, Aileen Canning and Dawn Meyer. Around the room there were charts of major events of when the club began in 1991 and photos of previous birthday celebrations and activities organised. The newsletter editor produced a small booklet outlining the history of the club and the various activities over the years until in 2021 when we met with face masks. Betsy Dunn, the newsletter editor, has done an amazing job during lockdowns to produce a newsletter each month. Many people contributed by forwarding a newsy item to include (because there wasn’t much happening). The newsletters were emailed to most members, or mailed. At the beginning of 2021 with the assistance of a member’s daughter, a club website was set up to keep current members in touch and to endeavour to attract new members. Coordinators contributed with news of their activity groups. This is updated with any events that have been possible within quarantine restrictions. The walking group members were able

Wanderers’ vision lives on is sought near seaside for the moderate climates, and in October we head inland. Locations are chosen by popular vote of attendees 12 months in advance. This is necessary due to the numbers involved generally 80 to 100 members.

Ken Heaslip “Wanderers” Coordinator

THE annual general meeting of Probus Victoria was held on 22 November, 2021. As there may be a number of new delegates, may I start with a story of the Probian Wanderers from its earlier days. In 2001 a meeting was held with the RACV who offered to formulate a special division for Probian caravaners/campers. It was decided such a format involved quite an amount of expense, including RACV membership, Roadside Assist, and membership of such a camping group. My co-founder, Bill Jennings of FaulknerMerlynston, and I chose to go it alone. And we’ve been going it alone for 21 years to date, so we feel we chose the correct course. Unfortunately, Bill has since passed away, but his vision is still alive. As to fees, we felt that the princely sum of $2 per head for those members attending an event would be adequate. This has proven to be the case, so much so that we have had to hold a non-Pancake

Of latter years these numbers are divided fairly equally between caravanners and cabin-dwellers. This early booking assures us of adequate and prime sites and cabins in the most desirable caravan parks. Unfortunately, with the advent of Covid-19, our attendances have been down - have in fact they have necessitated cancellations of the most recent events. But things are looking rosy for 2022, with the freeing from lockdowns. Tuesday, or some other function to expend surplus money. That money is normally used to defray publication costs, and necessary telephone calls. At this time, we have 227 names recorded as Claytons’ members, with 54 Probus clubs represented. Some clubs may have only two or three couples involved, others up to 20 or so couples - or single persons. Those who attend an eEvent and donate the $2 per head

become full members for the duration of the event. Bookings are normally made individually, or through individual clubs. Full details are circulated, published in the Probian News, and on the Probus Victoria website. Approximately two months before an event, an itinerary of activities is printed and circulated. We hold two events of one week’s duration each year - in February a venue

Mount Macedon explorers THE Combined Probus Club of Maroondah enjoyed a trip to Mount Macedon and Hanging Rock on 9 December 2021. After a year with very few activities due to Covid, members enjoyed a trip to Mount Macedon and to Hanging Rock by bus. Although the weather was cold and wet, going out with fellow members was good fun.

All Covid precautions were followed and the bus was excellent. At Hanging Rock, a guide explained the history, mystery and geology of the Rock and the surrounding areas. Some members also took an actual walking tour of the Rock, despite the weather. A great barbecue lunch was also thoroughly enjoyed.

Regain dignity with a bidet MY husband became a paraplegic 17 years ago and it was something that changed our lives in more ways than you’d even begin to imagine. The last thing he ever wanted was to be dependent on me instead of providing for our family. He was a great provider and the opportunity to give back to him in his time of need and adjustment was the least I could do. After three years of being his primary carer, as exhausting as it was, I was more concerned with his dignity and self-esteem. Around June 2016 I came across The Bidet Shop and decided to invest in their recommended health care bidet. The only thing that I did wrong was not looking in to it earlier. I still have to remove my husband’s clothes, but this is a small task after what we were enduring prior. We have continued to use, trade in and upgrade our bidet with the support of The Bidet Shop. I cannot speak highly enough about bidets; how they have assisted my husband in restoring some dignity as well as how the features have benefited our children and myself. Amazing Ararat IN a recent visit to Ararat, a group from Greensborough Combined Probus unearthed some pretty amazing facts about this relatively small mid-north city. With a population of some 11,965 people, more than five thousand people are employed in a range of industries. With a somewhat smaller group of campers than normal due to that Covid curse, we settled at the Acacia Caravan Park on Thursday 25 November. During the ensuing week, amid a variety of weather from cool to great to rainy, many of the attractions were explored. First visit, Thursday afternoon saw us at the Langi Morgala Museum, housed in a building of 1874 construction, previously a wheat and wool store, and a parachute manufacturing centre during WWII. Many of the exhibits reflected 19th and early 20th century equipment, including a huge variety of early horse-drawn transport. At the rear was a diesel-driven generator dating back to the city’s first taste of electricity in 1913 - still in working order. On Friday morning, a tour of AME Systems revealed one of the largest employers of some 300 persons, where electrical wiring harnesses are produced for power and signal distribution systems, for heavy trucks, buses, trains, mining, aviation, marine, military armoured vehicles, emergency vehicles, fixed electrical plants and other industrial machinery. This is a tour not to be missed by visiting groups. A visit from Ararat Probus on Friday picnic-in-the-park did not go to plan. Great to say hello to the locals, but the planned bocce tournament went awry as we huddled under shelter from the elements. Thank you to president Joy Wheeler, hubby Harry and other local members. In the afternoon, an interesting if spooky visit to the infamous J-Ward Asylum for the Criminally Insane had us on our best behavior. Many sad stories could be told of past inmates! Then, of course, no group visits Ararat area without checking out Seppelt Great Western. The winery was in danger of closing in October, 2015, but was granted a stay of execution by the owners of Best’s Winery nearby. Founded more than 150 years ago, Seppelt’s cellars are the longest underground tunnels in the Southern Hemisphere. The most interesting tour ended with a taste of one or three of the products. Our tour guide was Alan Kettle, secretary of Stawell Probus. Sunday and there is always a market somewhere handy. On this occasion, on a beautiful sunny day, it was down the track a bit to Pomonal, always a popular farmers’

could desire, to woodwork, to clothing, to products of the bees. To Monday, and a short walk from camp to the Gum San Chinese Heritage Museum. The site was a resting place for the Chinese gold-seekers, trekking from Robe, South Australia. It proved to be a good place to rest, as it led to discovery of the Canton Lead, one of the world’s richest alluvial gold finds. The museum was loaded with Chinese art and creations. It was said that most of the building materials were imported from China, including the 56,000 specially shaped roof tiles.

In the afternoon, we tried our hand at croquet, with mixed results. Thanks to the croquet cClub for an interesting session, if somewhat frustrating to some of our group! Tuesday, a bright, sunny day found us at Gason Machinery, producer of sturdy farm equipment. Established in 1946, the firm became national market leaders of heavy machinery specifically designed for Australian conditions. In later years the firm helped in developing Australian Standards for rollover protection. Most interesting were the various lasercutting equipment, producing parts from sheetmetal with jigsaw puzzle efficiency.

Other visits of interest during the week were the Ararat Wind Farm, home to 75 turbines, generating enough electricity of some 125,000 homes, and the James McMurtrie Glass Blowing Studio at Pomonal. In all, a great week in and around Ararat, thanks to planners’ extraordinaire Lee and Graham. Last, but not least, a big thank you to our Acacia Caravan Park hosts Matt and Kaylene and staff. Nothing was too much trouble, and that all-in breakfast treat left nothing to be desired!

Cathedral of the Wimmera

Erecting poles for Murtoa Stick Shed 1941. 265072 265 metres in length and 60 metres in width. Steel poles were not a consideration as iron ore products were needed for war purposes. What is mystifying is the fact that these poles, resembling the pillars of the great cathedrals of the world, were sunk only just over a metre into the ground and so stood until braced to the roof. No. 1 was the only Stick Shed to have a cement floor. which undoubtedly contributed to its lasting preservation. The

shed could hold 92,000 tons of wheat at full capacity. Later a second Stick Shed, No. 2 Emergency Grain Store, was built adjacent to No1 but it was damaged during a storm in the 1959s and was finally demolished in 1975. The No. 1 Shed became increasingly expensive to maintain and was no longer used after 1989. Fortunately, it is now attracting a steady flow of tourists which is helping to maintain it for posterity. The building is also used as a venue

for weddings, musical events and even the occasional gourmet dinner. It is open for inspection daily from 10am to 2pm. If you are going to Adelaide via Horsham this is well worth a side trip, or a visit can be combined with the Silo Art Trail of the Wimmera and Mallee. Glenda McIntyre, NTAV Volunteer and Member Reproduced with permission from the National Trust of Australia Victoria Magazine (Spring Edition)

12527672-SG07-22

LISTED on the Australian Heritage Data base in 2014, The Stick Shed as it has come to be known, is an astonishing, unique and unusual structure notable for its design, build and historic significance. It has been described by Architectural Historian Miles Lewis as ’Australia’s best timber industrial building’. It is the first and last remaining example of Australia’s rural vernacular heritage. The Wimmera has long been known for grain production, dating back to the 1860s when selectors took up runs. The township of Murtoa sprang up to supply the local farmers. By 1878 the railway line, so critical to grain cartage, reached Murtoa. By 1882 Murtoa was so important to the State of Victoria for its grain production that it was dubbed ’the Chicago of the Wimmera’. During the Second World War there was a glut of wheat in Australia as a result of the changing export market scene, and it became critical to significantly and quickly increase grain storage in Australia. As a result, 22 Stick Sheds were built, the first and only one remaining at Murtoa. Originally known as the No. 1 Emergency Grain Store, The Grain Elevator Board (GEB) commissioned the building in 1941. It was built within four months. Construction started in September 1941and was completed in January 1942. Five-hundred-and-sixty upright poles of Mountain Ash were transported from the Dandenongs, the Otways and as far away as Gippsland. They hold up a roof that is over 20 metres high and covers an area

Busy time for White Hills Club WHITE Hills Probus Club held a general meeting in November for the first time since May 2021 and it was great to see the interaction between members after such a long break. Several presentations were made including a 10-year service certificate to Elaine Smart; a special acknowledgement to Bryan and Dot Randall on their receipt of a Seniors Week award (as nominated by Probus Club of White Hills). Bill Knight (himself a Melbourne Demons supporter) made a presentation to Wendy Ryan for being such a loyal supporter of the Western Bulldogs football team who were defeated by the Demons in the AFL grand final. There were three inductions: Lyn Breen, Allan Breen and Des Fiedler, who were all warmly welcomed to the club by president Glenys Billings and all those present. Members were entertained by the

Uniting Ukes band who played a selection of music including many old favourites. While many voices were a bit rusty, everyone joined in the singing and a great time was had by all. At the completion of the meeting, members adjourned to the Red Lantern Chinese restaurant for lunch. Since then, Christmas lunch, complete with local entertainment was enjoyed at the Bendigo Pottery complex in White Hills. The combination of good company, good food, lots of chatter, a few laughs and a quiz made for an enjoyable day out. The next activity on the calendar is a picnic tea in the White Hills Botanic Gardens on Thursday 20 January 2022 at 5pm. BYO chair, food and drinks, followed by a general meeting on Tuesday 25 January, 10am at the White Hills Sports Complex in Scott Street. Visitors most welcome to all events.

surprise Alex Kent was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation and a bouquet of flowers. This was in recognition of her years as the club auditor. Alex is stepping down from that position but will remain a member along with her husband Geoff.

Both of these awards were made by our president Elsie Forster. It was a very enjoyable Christmas dinner so we finished what has been a pretty ordinary year on a high. All we can hope now is that next year is a lot more normal.

Technology has changed the face of other jobs. 263791

Some jobs have disappeared forever. 263791

Learning about Lost Jobs LOST Jobs: the changing world of work - a new exhibition at the Old Treasury Building Some Probians may well have heard of a nightman, a telegrapher, a comptometer or a typist. Perhaps you even knew someone who worked in one of those jobs. But how about a fairy tapper, a dolly boy, a scoop boy, or a wet nurse? These were jobs that were once common but have now disappeared. Many jobs have been lost in Victoria over

the years, while others have emerged, sometimes in completely new industries. The ever-changing world of work is the fascinating subject of a new, free exhibition at the Old Treasury Building in Melbourne. Lost Jobs charts the history of many different sectors of the world of work from the land to the factory, the home to the office. For most of that history the majority of jobs involved hard, physical labour. Whether shifting cargo on the

wharves or doing the family laundry, it was muscle work over long hours, with little in the way of safety equipment. Change could be gradual, as it was in the home, as domestic servants vanished to be replaced (slowly) by labour-saving appliances. Or it could be swift and devastating. The collapse of manufacturing in Victoria in the 1970s and ‘80s had widespread and long-term impacts on whole communities. Technological change was another major

driver of workforce change, whether it was containerisation on the wharves or the advent of the computer in the office. Both transformed whole industries and many lost their jobs. Lost Jobs also looks at some unusual occupations. What was a phrenologist? And what did an Inspector of Nuisances do? We hope you will come along to the Old Treasury Building and find out. Lost Jobs is open now and entry is free. There is more information online.

Probus celebrates Christmas MEMBERS of the Probus Club of Pakenham were able to celebrate Christmas with a gathering a the Deep Creek Golf Club after a long period of lockdown. President Kay Young said there was a lot of friendly chatter and sharing of jokes as members waiting for their meal. The highlight was a visit by funny man and magician, Don Jones. “The most interesting thing was some of our members being presented with bells to play Jingle Bells,” Kay said. “After quite a bit of practice and patience on Don’s part, they finally managed to get the tune correct, which brought on much hearty laughter and applause from the audience.” Kay said the club now looks forward to 2022 when they will get back to their usual practice of all sorts of activities and interesting outings which lets members get to know each other well. The club also has space for new members and invited retired or semiretired people who would like to meet similarly minded people to contact president Kay Young on 0421 281 785 or via email kayayoung100@gmail.com <mailto:kayayoung100@gmail.com for information.

Rosy Christmas in Benalla AFTER a year we probably don’t want to talk about, Benalla Rose City Probus members were able to get together to celebrate not only Christmas but the end of a trying year. In true Christmas spirit, about 80 members came together to enjoy an excellent meal at the Benalla Lakeside Community Centre situated on the banks of the Benalla Lake. With a beautiful summer’s day and lovely views of the trees, lake and football oval, the stage was set for a delightful few hours of fun, friendship and fellowship. Enhancing the festive spirit, two of the club members, Linda and Del Dube, dressed as Santas, led the members in a Christmas carol singalong which everyone enjoyed. Members departed replete and happy at being able to catch up with so many members after many missed meetings. We hope 2022 will provide us with many more opportunities.

Great rail trail gets longer By Elle Cecil THE Great Southern Rail Trail already spans 72 kilometres through lush and ever-changing South Gippsland countryside. Suitable for walking, cycling or horse riding, the trail connects local townships and offers a variety of sections that can accommodate all fitness levels. The trail starts in-land at Leongatha and extends all the way to Port Welshpool. Views of dairy and beef farms can be found along the trail, as well as rolling hills, rugged coastline and towering gums. The iconic Wilsons Promontory National Park can also be glimpsed from many locations. The Great Southern Rail Trail will be even longer soon with works currently underway to extend the trail between Leongatha and Nyora. This will add a further 36km to the trail and make it one of the longest rail trails in Victoria. Funding has also been received to extend the trail in the eastern direction between Welshpool and Yarram. South Gippsland Shire Council’s coordinator projects Jareth Goss is excited about the extension works. “Extending the trail is going to be great for visitors and the South Gippsland community. Linking two of our largest towns - Korumburra and Leongatha - is going to be of particular benefit for local residents and will open up a number of tourism opportunities,” says Jareth.

These upgrades will make the rail trail one of the longest in Victoria.

Sections of the existing Great Southern Rail Trail include:

· Leongatha to Port Welshpool (72km) – Long distance, more difficult terrain · Leongatha to Koonwarra (7.8km) – · The new Great Southern Rail Trail is the perfect opportunity to explore the beautiful South Gippsland region. Pictures: Supplied “Sections of the new trail are already open and we expect the trail to be fully linked through to Nyora in 2022.” One of the key differences between the Great Southern Rail Trail and other rail trails is the regular and easy access to townships from the trail. This means that there are plenty of chances to break your journey with a coffee, meal or a quick shop. It also means that there are options to stay nearby and take your time to thoroughly explore the South Gippsland region.

· · · ·

The Great Southern Rail Trail will be extended by 36kml between Leongatha and Nyora.

Mary, our outings convenor, and David from Southern Cross Tours worked together to make the trip finally happen. We visited numerous silos including a new one at Rushworth where we thrilled to meet with the artist. We also visited the Spanner Man and the Stick Shed in Murtoa. We all thoroughly enjoyed our four-day holiday and can recommend Southern Cross Tours to any group planning a bus trip.

Christmas lunch for Belmont Pamela Duthie COMBINED PROBUS CLUB OF BELMONT CHRISTMAS LUNCHEON 29 NOV. 2021 FOR our twenty-sixth Probus Christmas Luncheon sixty-one members (out of a total of eighty) booked for the function held in its own spacious room at the Pekish Restaurant, in Geelong Bowls Club, 7-9 Ballarat Road, North Geelong. Fortunately covid restrictions were lifted so we didn’t even need to wear masks! Unfortunately Kath Garvey fell ill and went to hospital so she and Bryan were absent. However, following the luncheon Angela delivered their meals to them courtesy of Pekish. Marion Jensen who was present but couldn’t stay for the photo, had her dislocated hip popped back in in Epworth Hospital a couple of days beforehand after a fall whilst weeding! The bright spacious room was tastefully decorated with white tablecloths, red and green ribbons and colorful bon bons. As members arrived they each received a lucky door prize ticket and a drink voucher. The tables behind the birthday members in the above photo were very colorful with many beautifully presented gifts dressed by Elaine Royce and Pam Heenan (kindly donated by Pam Duthie and son-in-law Craig). First a very tasty plate of three hot and tender Christmas meats and vegetables served with cranberry sauce, apple sauce and a lovely bun. I didn’t see anything left on the plates at my table except a couple of peas! Dessert was the choice of Christmas pudding in brandy custard or pavlovas filled with delicious berries and whipped cream. Special dietary meals were also provided and looked yummy! Those members present celebrating birthdays during November were called out the front and Beryl Ayres led the group in the singing of Happy Birthday. Following lunch President Angela Thompson wandered around the tables asking different members to draw out a lucky number from her ticket bag. The person with the lucky number was invited to the gift tables at the front to choose their prize. Many members moved around to speak to others around the room which made the occasion so welcoming. It was such a pleasure to meet together as we hadn’t since July because of covid restrictions.

Writers have stories to tell Jonty Ralphsmith A SMALL writing club from the Probian Association of Victoria has produced a 40 page publication named Bearbrass Writers Booklet containing high quality photographs and short pieces of writing. Lead by Tony Thomas, a journalist for over 50 years, the group met weekly over zoom from August-December last year, occupying themselves with writing exercises and activities to iron out common mistakes in amateur writing. “I realised that a writers’ group is perfectly feasible and with my own background, it’s nice to mentor and coach people who don’t have high, long histories in writing,” Mr Thomas said. “Many people have the inspiration but don’t have the technical aspects, so that’s how we started.” Mr Thomas mentored the writers after establishing the group in February 2020, but gave them autonomy about the subjects of their stories. Among the stories are descriptive pieces about landscape and the country and accomplished poetry, appealing to the semi-retired readership. Unbeknown to Mr Thomas when he initiated the writers group, three budding novellists, two accomplished poets, and a published author were all keen to write in the publication. Almost all writing in the booklet is

The group also included a professional standard photographer with a background in wildlife photography, South African Kerrie Matthee, whose contribution further enhanced the product.

At pains to ensure the contributors’ achievements are duly acknowledged, Mr Thomas is hesitant to recognise his own efforts, but Coral-Lee Keep, a writer in the publication, attributes its success to his work. “He’s awe-inspiring. That he could go from nothing to that in that time is amazing,“ Ms Keep said.

“He offered lots of helpful suggestions and information about how to go about writing. “It’s very hard to open oneself up to exposing oneself and to criticism and laughter. Tony is positive in the group and they’re positive in giving constructive feedback all the time.“ Clive Gartner, a contributor to the publication with a grounding in historical writing, added: “Tony’s input has been paramount to the success of the publication. Tony’s editorship and his red pencil jobs along with his work in putting the magazine together are the reason the publication looks as good as it does.” Ms Keep had no prior writing experience and was directionless about her writing subjects, but wrote three pieces in the publication as she was introduced to a whole new world. “It’s probably more than I’ve learnt in all my life about writing and books and a new way of using the internet for writers to be getting readers.“ Mr Thomas received a budget of $500 from The Probian enabling 100 copies to be printed. Many were dispersed at the Probian Christmas party last year as the writers celebrated their hard work. “The feedback was terrific. They all thought it was great to discover what other members were up to and how talented we are on the writing front,“ Mr Thomas added. The group is welcoming new members. They are currently conducting fortnightly sessions. Contact Bearbrass Probus at bearbrassprobus.org or via bearbrassprobus@gmail.com to connect.

Syndal Club explores Buchan IN late November a group organised by Syndal Combined Probus Club enjoyed a five day trip to Buchan with Chris Grafen on the Highland Explorer bus. This tour was a last-minute replacement for planned trips to other states that were cancelled due to Covid in 2020 and 2021. From our pick-up points we travelled east on the main highway before detouring through back roads to the morning tea stop at Blue Rock Lake, near Moe. Then onto Glenmaggie Lake and weir for lunch. After a picturesque drive through attractive Gippsland countryside, we arrived at Buchan and our comfortable accommodation at the Buchan log cabins. The next three days included visits to the Buchan Caves and museum, the remote Timbarra, Omeo, Ensay, Bruthen, and Little River Gorge Lookout. A drive up Mt Seldom Seen was abandoned due to low cloud so it remained seldom seen! A visit to Karoonda Park Farm in Gelantipy, which included lunch, was a highlight. The property has been run by Paul and Judy Sykes for over 30 years. In their earlier days they used to host several backpacker buses a week, as well as school camps and independent travellers. This involved putting on dinner for up to 130 people a night. In addition they ran the Karoonda Park Roadhouse, Snowy Mountains Horse Ride Tours, and Snowy River Rafting, all in their spare time! Paul ran more than 3000 sheep on the farm and Judy just happened to be the local school principal. The drive back to Melbourne included a

day. We also saw a display of the beautiful needle-work art of Annemeike Mein. This concluded a lovely trip away out of the confines of Melbourne city. Our grateful

thanks to Chris for this tour after all the cancelling and re-booking of many tours for many Probus Clubs and other groups over the last two years.

St Arnaud is 20 years old ON Wednesday 7 April, the Combined Probus Club of St Arnaud celebrated its 20th anniversary, holding their usual meeting at the Freemasons Centre with four visiting Probus Clubs in attendance. Representatives came from Horsham, Charlton, Maryborough, Stawell, our sister club Kara, and Rotary to join in, bringing the total to 60 persons. After the usual meeting formalities and some socialising, we adjourned to the St Arnaud Bowling Club room for a lovely lunch prepared by the Stuart Mill CWAladies. The afternoon was mixed with several activities, with Rotary representative Rhonda McKenzie presenting Rex Salter (our inaugural president) with the 20 year Probus congratulatory certificate. This was immediately followed by the cutting of our birthday cake, with the candle lit by life member Ray Williams (our inaugural secretary), fanned out by our most recent 90 year old, Thea Phillips, and cut by our current president, Sheila Sorrighan. Our members had been asked to come dressed as a song title, so 16 members dressed up and provided much humour as members not dressed as a song had to try and guess the song title. Some were obvious and some not so, much to the amusement of those present. First prize went to Bev Watts for her Stormy Weather, dressed complete with rain coat, gum boots, brolly and sou’wester. Second prize went to Kevin Cadzow and Elaine Palmer portraying Daisy on a tandem bicycle. The occasion, as usual, provided a great opportunity for members to renew acquaintanceships with members from other clubs who we only see on such occasions when we can get together. The afternoon also provided the opportunity to take a group photo of the 23 remaining foundation members who were able to attend out of the original 70. Such is the result of the passage of time. David Hines of the Hot B Hines fame, provided music and jokes as entertainment throughout the afternoon, much to the enjoyment of all.

Winner of Song Title: Bev as Stormy Weather.

Runner-up in Song Title. Kevin and Elaine on a bicycle built for two.

Presentation of 20th Anniversary certificate to Foundation president Rex Salter.

Get Bloomin’ Native Flowers arranged by Pam Duthie.

Busy Belmont Pamela Duthie Newsletter Editor & Historian MANY activities and events were undertaken by members of the Combined Probus Club of Belmont in October 2021, despite its own meetings and outings being cancelled due to Covid-19 restrictions. Once again. the City of Greater Geelong came up with a mixed assortment of Seniors’ Events despite Covid placing so many limits on our activities such as no club general or committee meetings held since July (and few before) nor any other activities like dine outs, trips, morning teas or Mahjong. Among the activities members took on were: Get Bloomin - with a Flower Arrangement Kit: The large bunches of native flowers from Gateway in North Geelong were quickly snapped up. Each recipient had to follow the written instructions to arrange the beautiful blooms in the supplied vase. They flowered for more than a couple of weeks too. Virtual Walk in the Geelong Botanic Gardens: A number watched this tour on their TVs, phones or iPads. It was sponsored by The Friends of the Gardens. Those lucky enough to have snapped up the $10 couchers available on 1 October for the Gardens Cafe were very lucky! In the glorious weather of October 27 three members were snapped in the actual gardens admiring the beautiful rhododendrons and the newly refurbished Hitchcock’s Water Fountain after they’d partaken in a very nice afternoon tea in the Garden’s Cafe using their $10 vouchers. Eat Well, Live Well - Nutrition Habit Change: At least one member watched the free webinar on her laptop but a group of members are still waiting for the free copies of the city’s Eat Well, Live Well Toolkit which was inadvertently held up. If I Had a Hammer - Musical Doco: Presented on the internet by Colin Mockett this two-hour show lifted the spirits of those who watched, with images, songs and commentary depicting the story of the First World War and its hope for world peace. Mindful Rock Art Kits: Two mask-wearing members picked up four stunning rock art kits beforehand, complete with a step-by-step guide, river rocks, paints and paintbrushes, from Diversitat in Corio and then set up paper-covered tables at home in readiness to partake in the wonderful live Rock Art webinar on the large screen

TV, a step by step live guidance, to paint three of the four rocks - one as a ladybird beetle, another a flower and the third as a Mandana rock! One hour of solid concentration begun with handy hints and mindfulness techniques. Club Italia Take Away Afternoon Tea: What a delicious assortment of slices was provided from Routleys, together with a container of fruit salad and all beautifully presented, tied with lace with a serviette, sugar, tea and coffee satchel attached. Because of Covid-19 and a mix up, members enjoyed them alone instead of in a park. At least one watched Piano Bar on TV. The Virtual Royal Geelong Show: I know of one of our Probus members who took part in the Virtual Geelong Show (being run over a six month time frame) provided because of the show being cancelled due to the outbreak of Covid-19. Sue O’Shea entered in the homecraft’s photography section’s farm animals class, taking out a second prize with her photo of her granddaughter Charlotte’s lambs! Songs to Remember: An hour of live entertainment to watch on TV via YouTube performed by Andy Pobjoy and presented by Kings. Musical Morning Tea at Home: Bellarine Community Support Register delivered beautifully decorated happy face cup cCakes in presentation boxes the day before together with four bags of tea towels, scraps of material, glitter glue and iron-on paper! The next day, being such a lovely day, the group of four Probus friends gathered at the Gateway Sanctuary, Leopold to enjoy the cup cakes together with a welcome cup of coffee before taking a walk around the man-made lakes with its swans, ducks and a pelican floating by. It was just too nice to sit in the lounge room at home alone listening to music. Later, at least one of the group got to watch the live streamed music from Piano Bar, Geelong, on her TV via YouTube. Masks on again, some of the group gathered on another two days, to begin cutting out 40-odd Christmas trees and trunks, then ironing on the stick on paper onto those objects before ironing them onto the dozen tea towels provided with the cup cakes. Then the trees were edged with glitter glue and left to dry. A lot of fun was had working out what had to be done and how it was to be done! A day later when the glue was dry, the group gathered to admire their work and to choose which tea towel each would keep. The remaining tea towels were picked up by the Bellarine group and given to deserving people as Christmas presents.
