Of the $5.8 million in funding from the Federal Government, $2.3 million came from Community Development Grants and $3.5 million from the Regional Growth Fund. The

$2 million is State Government funding was supplied from the Growing Suburbs Fund.

Yarra Ranges Council is hoping the new projects will bring an extra 750,000 annual visitors to the region and add $80 million to the local economy, generating 535 jobs.

The project is expected to be completed in March 2023.

The three levels on government – council, state and federal – came together at the Silvan Dam lookout in Kalorama for the RidgeWalk sod-turning ceremony.

The 39 kilometres of walking track, which includes the upgrading of old walking tracks and 14km of newly-built paths, is being funded through $2 million each from Yarra Ranges Council and the Victorian State Government, and $5.8 million from the Federal Government.

Yarra Ranges Mayor Jim Child and Deputy Mayor Johanna Skelton joined Casey Federal MP Tony Smith and Monbulk State MP James Merlino to mark the beginning of construction of the RidgeWalk project.

Mayor Child said the project wouldn’t have been possible without the assistance of the two MPs. “These two gentlemen have played such a significant role in the outcomes of the Yarra Ranges,” he said.

“They are both long-term serving politicians and James a former Yarra Ranges Councillor, and they have contributed so much to our region.”

The trails will take walkers through Mt Evelyn, Montrose, Kallorama, Mount Dandenong, Olinda, Sassafras, Ferny Creek, Upper Ferntree Gully, Belgrave, Kallista and Upwey.

Mr Smith said the RidgeWalk was an ambitious and transformative project for the area which has been a long time in the making.

“I’m very proud the Federal Government has put in nearly $6 million dollars. Sometimes we are the major funder, sometimes the state is the major funder,” he said.

Playground for retirees

By Parker McKenzie Sassafras Preschool has opened their new playground by dedicating it to retiring teachers Debbie Haberfield and Leonie Stow, who left the preschool after 24 years of teaching in 2021.

The playground, funded through a grant awarded by the Victorian State Government, was opened on Monday 1 February with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, where a plaque celebrating the “passion and heart” Ms Haberfield and Stow nurtured in the Sassafras community was dedicated to the teachers.

Parent council member Michael Tyson said he adored the work designer Alex Vears had done.

“He went above and beyond, somehow delivering a truly wonderful space for our kids, on a very tight timeline and, because of grant limitations, to a pre-Covid budget!” he said.

The playground was designed and built by Stonefield Landscapes and Gardens and features native plants, a sensory trail, climbing tepee, balancing beams and a pebble filled creek feature.

Salina Collins and Judy Moore have joined the preschool to replace Mrs Stow and Haberfield after teaching kinder in Mooroolbark and Mt Evelyn.

Ms Collins said she was fortunate to be following people passionate about education.

“Judy and I feel very privileged to be joining the Sassafras Preschool community at such an exciting time,” Ms Collins said.

“We definitely feel that we and the 2022 cohort of children are the fortunate beneficiaries of the hard work and passion of Deb, Leonie, Alex and Michael.”

Mrs Haberfield told the Star Mail on 16 December that the pair was grateful for the support of their preschool community.

“We’d like to thank the community for all their support, friendship and care over the many years,” Mrs Haberfield said.

“The appreciation they have has been overwhelming at times. Preschool is often the first time families leave their children so for us it’s a big responsibility.”

Sassafras Preschool welcomed students back for term one on Tuesday 1 February.

IN BRIEF Police searching for white SUV Police are seeking more information regarding an road collision which resulted in a car colliding with a tree.

On Monday 31 January at 12.15pm, a blue utility vehicle collided with a tree on Dorset Road in Bayswater North after being forced off the road by another driver.

Witnesses on the scene at the time of the collision said a white SUV-type vehicle was driving erratically before it abruptly veered into another lane, forcing a 66-year-old man to attempt to avoid it.

The man driving the second vehicle collided with a tree and was taken to hospital. The extent of his injuries are currently unknown.

Police said there were a large number of vehicles travelling on Dorset Road at the time of the collision and they believe someone will have seen or have dash-cam footage of the white SUV that can assist them in identifying it.

Window seat view Puffing Billy riders will be able to once again dangle their legs over the side during the ride, with the return of the sitting on the sills experience.

The more-than-a-century old tradition of sitting on the window sill and hanging ones legs out was banned in 2018, after the Puffing Billy steam train and a tour bus collided in the Dandenong Ranges.

The announcement of the return of the event was well attended by both locals and politicans, with Deputy Premier James Merlino and Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events Martin Pakula making their way to Belgrave.

Mr Merlino said Puffing Billy is a muchloved favourite for tourists, day-trippers and school groups.

“The return of sitting on the sills will ensure more visitors come to our region to experience all we have on offer.”

Members of the Emerald Tourist Railway Board, who manage Puffing Billy, were also in attendance.

Mr Pakula said the return of the experience was great for tourism and local businesses in the region.

“There’s no other railway experience like sitting on an open-side carriage sill as Puffing

Billy winds through the Dandenong Ranges.”

He said.

The activity will be take place Belgrave to Lakeside stations and tickets must be prebooked. Children under four will not be allowed to take part in the activity for safety reasons and children aged between four and 13 must be supervised when taking part.

Prior to the pandemic, Puffing Billy attracted around 500,000 visitors annually.

The $24.8 million Lakeside Visitor Centre also recently opened in Emerald, which officials will hope will boost tourism related to the steam train in the area.

Power saving bonus extended until June The $250 Power Saving Bonus payment has been extended until 30 June to help support households doing it tough with energy bills.

Member for Monbulk James Merlino said that the extension would provide crucial financial support for eligible households who have yet to receive the payment.

“The Power Saving Bonus is easing cost of living pressures and I encourage all eligible households to apply for what could be a crucial $250 payment towards their energy bills,” Mr Merlino said.

“Applying for the Power Saving Bonus is as easy as a five-minute online application or phone call, and constituents are always

welcome to contact my office on 9754 5401 if they require further assistance.”

Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change Lily D’Ambrosio said since it was launched in February last year, more than 350,000 Victorians have received the one-off payment, at a total value of $87.5 million, but believes the extension will help more vulnerable households access the payment.

“We are proud to continue supporting vulnerable households with the $250 Power Saving Bonus payment program until 30 June,” Ms D’Ambrosio said.

Funding for multicultural organisations Cardinia Shire Council has announced the launch of a $50,000 Covid-19 multicultural community connection grants program.

The program will provide recovery support to local multicultural communities through access to one-time payments of up to $5000.

Multicultural community groups, services and non-for-profit organisations will receive support to devlop processes and procedures to aid in Covid-19 recovery.

Applications will open Tuesday 1 February and will close once the $50,000 is exhausted.

Fatal crash Police are investigating the circumstance of a fatal collision in Yea on Sunday 6 February.

Police said they believe two cars collided on Melba Highway at 5pm, with a 56-year-old woman from Belgrave South dying at the scene of the accident.

The other driver, a 37-year-old woman from Healesville, was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries.

The cause of the collision hasnâ ™t been determined and police will investigate before preparing a report for the coroner.

Victoria Police is asking anyone who witnessed the crash or have dashcam footage to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

The new car park, which is fully funded by Cardinia Shire Council, will have 156 spaces, including 6 accessible spaces.

“While works are taking place, visitors to Worrell Reserve, the Emerald Library, and the Hills Hub are encouraged to park at the lower Library car park, accessible via Emerald Lake Road,” council said.

“Thank you to everyone for your patience while these works are underway.”

The car park is a part of a larger upgrade to Worell Reserves Football and cricket oval, where a new pavilion was built.

Storm events and Covid lockdowns pushed back the timeline for completion of the project, with works originally due to be finished in December.

Connecting the hills data The release of an engagement report by Connecting Victoria, where residents throughout the Victoria voiced their need for better mobile and broadband connections, is another step towards better telecommunications throughout the Dandenong Ranges and Yarra Valley.

Minister for Innovation, Medical Research and the Digital Economy Jaala Pulford released the Connecting Victoria engagement report on Tuesday 1 February, which received more than 11,000 responses through Engage Victoria and more than 110 formal submissions. Around 300 people attended 13 round-tables held across Victoria.

Sassafras resident, writer and researcher Peter Brennan has been campaigning for better connectivity for hills communities because of major concerns of telecommunication outages during storms and bushfires.

“I was approached by a couple of businesses because they didn’t have very good mobile reception in their offices to cater to the business needs of visitors and customers,” he said.

“We’re talking about doctors and hoteliers, they were at breaking point. I was in a similar boat and the reason you have to call me on a landline is because the mobile services are so poor I just can’t take mobile calls.”

After gathering crowd-sourced information, including using maps posted around pharmacies, coffee shops and pubs for the community to identify black-spots in mobile coverage, Mr Brennan contacted local members of parliament for assistance in addressing the concerns of local residents.

Mr Brennan said identifying breaks in coverage would helped discover where mobile coverage and broadband was lacking, which is the foundation of the emergency response system in the Dandenong Ranges.

“It was disastrously under resourced and just didn’t work. We had a lot of responses so we have an on ground truth which was then reported to the government by the telecommunications authorities themselves,” he said.

“Just as were getting into that, the hills got struck by the huge storms and it took three days for emergency communications to find their way from the Dandenongs to the Emergency Broadcast system, which is the ABC,

After trying to seek funding for better infrastructure through the Federal Government’s funding for peri-urban telecommunications, Mr Brennan hit another roadblock.

“We were advised by Tony Smith that we might need to look more closely at accessing funding through the State Government,” Mr Brennan said.

“Very quickly after that I was approached by a representative from Connecting Victoria, who was very keen to use our data as part of the relooking at the criteria by which they

were allocating funding.”

Connecting Victoria is a $550 million State Government program, which aims to fasttrack business-grade broadband and upgrading mobile coverage in Victoria.

Mr Brennan said Connecting Victoria has “been a god send, to be quite honest.”

“They’ve been so embracing of local knowledge, collecting data and encouraging us to input that data into their system so they had a complete database that particularly looked at risk, which had not been part of the original criteria for accessing telecommunications.

“Yarra Ranges Shire very quickly got involved in this and has been wonderful throughout that entire process, with their support we were able to work closely with Connecting Victoria to emphasise the need to close the gap in the recommendations from the bushfire royal commission, which was to provide greater levels of public levels of public access and safety in bushfire prone areas.”

The State Government said it will take the report insights into account and use it to form part of the decision making process for which locations will be upgraded in the future.

“Better connectivity creates enormous opportunities for jobs, boosts community safety and supports growth in some of our most important industries,” Ms Pulford said.

“We’re investing in new infrastructure where it is needed most to ensure more Victorians can reap the benefits of a thriving digital economy.”

Mr Brennan said there needs to be a greater haste in allocating money for telecommunications in the hills and Dandenong Ranges.

“I completely understand they going to go through the processes and the approvals, they’re looking to announce funding in June,” he said.

“Hopefully that money is available and works can be initiated very quickly. Every year without emergency coverage is another which the population is in critical risk, so that’s what needs to happen, “I am confident in Connecting Victoria’s processes, I’m confident that we’ll get that money allocated. It will be incredibly helpful.”

In late 2021 Yarra Ranges Council introduced 10 trial sites for fixed installations of NBN disaster satellite services throughout the Valley and Dandenong Ranges, including in Monbulk, Olinda and The Patch.

The trials were funded through the Strengthening Telecommunications Against Natural Disaster grant, a $37.1 million federal program.

The service can be activated during and after an emergency to provide internet access for affected communities.

Cockatoo bush block to remain untouched VCAT rules Eight out of the 10 allotments along Paternoster Road were currently being used for rural living purposes, one being used for commercial purposes with Mr Bucci’s block (number 369) the only one not having a dwelling, Mr Templar said.

By Shelby Brooks A plan to build a new home in a bushy Cockatoo subdivision has been rejected by the state’s planning tribunal.

Carmine Bucci appealed to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) in December to try overturn Cardinia Shire Council’s ruling that didn’t allow him to build a house on Paternoster Road Cockatoo.

In the ruling released on 1 February, VCAT member Joel Templar said Mr Bucci described the build site as one of 10 allotments subdivided in 1963.

would be to ignore the role of the decision maker in administering the planning scheme,” Mr Templar said.

“I find that there is no part of the planning scheme that I can give any weight to in support of the proposal on such grounds.

“This may seem unfair and unjust; however, it also has to be recognised that this is not residentially zoned land, where a substantial amount of vegetation needs to be removed for the proposed dwelling and the other existing dwellings referred to have existed for many years.”

Mr Templer agreed with the shire’s initial reasons for refusal in that the single storey home would have an “adverse outcome” on native vegetation and biodiversity and impact from bushfire.

Twenty-five per cent of the allotment (0.542 hectares) would have had to be cleared of vegetation in order to build the four bedroom brick veneer home.

“The proposed removal of vegetation from the site does not protect and enhance natural resources and the biodiversity or the landscape qualities of the area,” Mr Templar said.

Way needs fixing

By Parker McKenzie A failed art installation on Blacksmiths Way in Belgrave will be re-laid by the contractor as a result of issues with a coating used on the road.

The project was completed in late 2021 as a part of a Landscape Masterplan for Blacksmiths Way, which included the application of a coloured surface to the lane featuring a graphic of flowing water and platypuses.

Yarra Ranges Council said issues with a batch of coating combined with weather complications resulted in the graphic feature drying with an uneven and cloudy finish.

“Late last year, we resurfaced the laneway and added a graphic feature to the road surface,” Yarra Ranges Council said.

“Unfortunately due to an issue with the coating used for the works, the graphic feature on the road hasn’t rendered with the finish and vibrancy we intended.”

Council said the contractor would complete the works at no extra cost.

The water graphic spans roughly 300 metres of Blacksmiths Way, which is located between Belgrave Train Station and Burwood Highway.

Belgrave local Michael Dinkgreve raised concerns about the installation with Yarra Ranges Council because the chemical phenol used in the installation is harmful to aquatic life and the coating was marking the road around Blacksmiths Way. Mr Dinkgreve said he wanted council to supervise the rectification work to ensure there was no further risk of wastage ending up in drains.

“I have noticed that the bitumen is cracking due to the application of the epoxy systems used in the art installation,” Mr Dinkgreve said.

“The rectification procedures need to be double checked and done responsibly.”

February at night to avoid disruptions; however, as of 2 February it does not appear works have begun.

Streeton Ward packs Ballot-packs for the Yarra Ranges Council Streeton Ward by-election were mailed to residents in Sassafras, Olinda and surrounding areas between 1 and 3 February.

The by-election will be conducted entirely by post, with no voting centres being opened.

Election Manager Genevieve Hammerton is encouraging people to vote as early as possible.

“With the whole election being conducted by post, it’s incredibly important voters complete and return their ballot material as soon as possible to make sure their vote counts,” Ms Hammerton said.

The by-election saw six people nominated: Andrew Fullagar, Wil Mikelsons, David Hill, Gavin Wooten, Doug MacDonald and Jarrad Page.

The elected candidate will represent Streeton Ward on Yarra Ranges Council until the 2024 council general election.

Ballot material must be in the mail or hand-delivered to the election office by 6pm Friday 18 February.

In the Tuesday 25 January edition of the Ranges Trader and Ferntree Gully Trader Star Mail Newspaper, all six candidates were profiled. The Victorian Electoral Commission also had the candidates answer a questionnaire, which can be found on their website.

The declaration for the successful candidate will be finalised by no later than Monday 28 February.

Voting in the election is compulsory for people who were on the state roll on Friday 10 December 2021, and those enrolled voters who don’t vote may be fined.

By Parker McKenzie During a visit to the Four Pillars Gin Distillery with Casey Liberal candidate Aaron Violi, Federal Treasurer Josh Frydenberg signalled the Liberal Party “is deeply committed to investing” in the electorate.

The distillery hosted Mr Frydenberg and Mr Violi’s visit as Lilydale Road, Healesville – where Four Pillars in located – underwent federally funded road works.

When asked whether the Casey electorate would see further funding announcements before the federal election, Mr Frydenberg said Mr Violi had his own priorities for investment in the local area.

“Lilydale Road is one that has significant investment from the government, which has helped make a difference to the business right here and the number of visitors – 200,000

plus,” Mr Frydenberg said.

“We’ll continue to look at opportunities to invest in this electorate, whether it was the work of the great former member Tony Smith, or the new candidate.”

The upgrade to Lilydale Road was funded through $150 million provided by the Federal Government in 2019 to Yarra Ranges Council.

Mr Frydenberg said said Mr Violi was an outstanding candidate who performed strongly during the pre-selection process.

“He is a third generation local, someone who went to school local, someone who worked in business local and someone who now volunteers in community organisations,” Mr Frydenberg said.

“He’s determined to support the local community through the difficult times we’re having right now.”

Mr Violi won a tightly contested pre-selec-

tion to be the new Liberal candidate for Casey after Mr Smith, a respected former Speaker of the House, announced his retirement from federal politics in 2021.

Mr Violi said Mr Frydenberg “has done a great job.”

“One of the things I keep hearing in the community is about JobKeeper and how instrumental it was to helping businesses survive,” Mr Violi said.

“That’s a legacy to the Treasurer, so I’m really proud to have Joshua here today and Four Pillars hosting us.”

The visit to Four Pillars was one stop on a campaign starting in earnest for Mr Violi, with the date of the federal election yet to be announced.

The latest date a federal election can be held is 21 May.

A first time candidate has been announced to run as the Australian Labor Party’s 2022 federal election candidate for the seat of La Trobe, which includes Gembrook, Emerald and Cockatoo.

Abhimanyu (Abi) Kumar has run a small construction business for many years but is now turning his attention to politics, stating he wasn’t satisfied with the current leadership in La Trobe.

“I think the current government that we have, the current member he demonises too many people and puts people against each other,” he said.

“That’s not the message we want to bring across.”

Mr Kumar said he wanted to run for the seat of La Trobe because he could relate to the people who lived in the area.

“I have a young family, I can connect with a lot of people, I run a small business,” he said.

“La Trobe is a seat that has the most small

business owners here.

“I can connect with the people here and understand the pressures of young families and I want to change it for the better.”

Mr Kumar has been a Labor member for seven years and worked on various campaigns.

“My father was a union leader, I’m a union member,” he said.

Mr Kumar, along with Ballarat MP and Shadow Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Catherine King, visited Pakenham on Thursday 27 January to promise $736,000 in funding for the Officer Tennis Club and Toomuc Reserve pavilion should Labor win the election.

“Social infrastructure is big for the Labor party,” Mr Kumar said.

“We want to bring the sporting facilities, whether it be the tennis club or the pavilion here to be improved and to the used by the local community all year around.

“If we end up winning this seat we will be bringing more announcements as well.”

Cardinia Council asking for input on climate strategy Cardinia Shire’s new Climate Change Adaption Strategy is now open to the public for comment, with council encouraging residents to go online and have their say before consultation closes on 16 March.

Cardinia Shire Council declared a climate emergency in September 2019 because of the increasing climate change induced natural hazards which have an adverse effect on ecosystems, human health and the economy.

Cardinia Shire Mayor Councillor Jeff Springfield is encouraging the community to provide their input into this strategy.

“We are gathering feedback on the 14 community-facing actions in the Climate Change mailcommunity.com.au

Adaptation Strategy to enable Council to prioritise the factors that affect our people the most,” Cr Springfield said.

“We want to know how climate change affects you as a Cardinia Shire resident. Which climate-related hazards concern you the most?

What are your biggest concerns about the impacts of climate change? Tell us what matters most to you, so that together we can create a more sustainable future for Cardinia Shire.”

The Climate Change Adaption Strategy will provide a framework to reduce the community’s vulnerability to adverse climate events which are increasing in both magnitude and frequency.

The strategy will promote the resilience of social, ecological and economic systems and will focus on planning to embed adaptive measures into council operations and processes, as well as recommend actions for reducing vulnerability caused by the impacts of climate change to the community.

Council said the development of the strategy will bring together community and council stakeholders “to raise climate concerns and identify adaptation processes that will aim to protect our natural and built environment into the future for generations to come.”

By Parker McKenzie An iconic Dandenong Ranges property will soon be up for sale, with huge interest already shown on the property.

The heritage-listed Rostrevor house in Sassafras was built in 1893 on a two acre property and features three stories, 26 rooms and a guest house. It was originally known as Mountain Rest and it is immeditaley noticeable as you pass through the hills.

The property – located at 411 Mount Dan-

denong Tourist Road – is included in the heritage overlay because it is “representative or rare example of the once numerous guest houses in the Dandenongs during the 1920s,” according to the Victorian Heritage Database Report.

Fletchers Yarra Ranges director Scott Allison said the Rostrevor is one of “the most iconic buildings in the Dandenong Ranges.”

“It’s probably the most visual one, you can’t help but see it when you drive past,” he said.

“It’s been on every postcard of the Dandenong Ranges that I can remember.”

The property is expected to sell for between over $2 million, though people hoping to see inside the private building will be disappointed.

“We aren’t opening this one up to the public, it will be registered buyers only at the owner’s request,” Mr Allison said.

“They don’t want thousands of sticky beakers walking through the home.”

Restrevor House was last sold in the 1960s and has been privately owned and closed to the public since.

Mr Scott said the house “will need to be restored, but it’s structurally it’s in good order.”

The house is up for sale because of the passing of the previous owner Malcolm Johnson in 2021.

While no dates for the expression of interest auction have been set yet, it is expected to hit the market in four weeks’ time.

Protecting private land

By Parker McKenzie Around 400 hectares of privately owned land throughout the Hills and Dandenong Ranges has been protected since 2019 through Trust for Nature, to ensure the survival bio-diverse habitats.

Working with Trust for Nature, landholders volunteered to permanently protect habitat on their properties.

Regional manager Ben Cullen said there are plenty of important conservation areas throughout the Dandenong Ranges and Yarra Valley.

“We’re reaching out landholders to try and see who is interested in looking into protecting their properties,” he said.

“We can protect a lot of things that aren’t represented in national parks, so a lot of people have these conservation values on their property and it can have national significance.”

Trust for Nature helps private land owners place conservation covenants on the title of their property, protecting the land permanently as a conservation area.

In 2020 and 2021, more than 2700 hectares – an area 15 times the size of Melbourne’s CBD – has been protected throughout Victoria.

Landowner Ann Lazzaro volunteered 20 hectares of her property in Galadysdale under a conservation covenant because it protects habitats for the threatened Lewin’s Rail and Swamp Skink.

“Protecting this land gives me a feeling of positivity and hope for the future,” Ms Lazzaro said.

“In this sense the covenant is a legacy that will ensure that this very beautiful and special part of our bush will be given the best chance of flourishing.”

Trust for Nature is one of Australia’s oldest conservation organisations. It was established as a non-for-profit organisation by the Victorian Conservation Trust Act 1972 to protect

“We’ve had a bit of a focus around helmeted honey eaters and leadbeater possums because they are so endangered,” he said.

Kulin Tales by Sonia Marie

By Parker McKenzie Sonia Marie, a proud Bunurong woman, has authored a book featuring stories from each of the seven seasons of the Kulin nation.

Kulin Tales, which is illustrated by Judy Prosser, invites readers to “step back in time and enjoy captivating stories that share the seasonal movements of Bunerong People.”

Ms Marie said the book features the Bunurong language, which she wants to introduce to more people.

“I’ve been working for 30 years to reclaim our language through archival and historical records, so I wanted to weave some of the language into the books.”

“It’s so important because language is culture, especially to Aboriginal people.”

Ms Marie said while some parts of the language are still used by elders and community members, she has worked hard to preserve the words used by her people in the past and introduce them to a new audience.

“In the Kulin nation we have seven seasons instead of four, so I wrote a story for each season,” she said.

“The stories explore how Aboriginal people would have lived in the past, by the season.”

The Kulin nation is an alliance of five Indigenous Australian nations, who are the Wurundjeri, Bunurong, Wathaurong, Tanugurung and Dja Dja Wurrung people.

Before colonisation by the British, the Indigenous nations who make up the Kulin Nation spoke five related languages and inhabited the area for 40,000 years.

Ms Marie said she hopes the book will help people become more in touch with the culture of Indigenous Australians who live in Kulin Country.

“I’d love for the stories to get into the education system,” she said.

“It starts on the ground; I’m always trying to do talks with children about Bunerong culture.”

OPINION

Taking notes from COP26 COP26 made the world sit up and take notice and think about what we can do to keep the planet in the best shape we can. Pollutants and emissions must be tackled as we focus on how best to keep our planet clean, safe and healthy.

For me, having the opportunity to head to Glasgow as part of a delegation of Liberal/National MPs and be a participant in these discussions was a privilege.

I had the opportunity to meet with representatives from other countries, particularly from the UK, Canada and USA, and hear about their progress, their transition plans and their challenges on the war on emissions to be carbon neutral by 2050. All countries are at different stages, all have a different energy mix, so all have a different path forward.

The state of

affairs Cindy McLeish MP Member for Eildon What was evident however was the commitment from those there to move forward – whether that be through hydro, wind, green hydrogen, solar or tidal power. What was also evident is that exciting technologies are being developed, at a furious rate and driven by the private sector however, many are very much in

the developmental stage and still years away from widespread rollout.

One ground-breaking project, which took out the prestigious international Clean Energy Start-Up Pitch prize was carbon capture through bricks and plasterboard. Most exciting though is this amazing research and development was led by a young woman from Canberra, Sophia Hamblin Wang.

After Glasgow I visited Seimens-Gamesa in Hull, to see the manufacture and installation of wind turbines. There is a lot being done in ‘offshore wind’, which means the turbines are embedded in the seabed.

Trialling of floating turbines that can be located some 20-30km offshore and out of view is underway. This technology will not be avail-

able until the end of the decade and is possibly three times more expensive.

More recently the UK announced a ban on the sale of new diesel and petrol cars and vans from 2030. This has seen manufacturers put serious effort into developing electric vehicles and in particular meet the challenges of range anxiety and cost anxiety – big concerns for many in Australia.

We all know how important it is that we have a healthy planet and to do all we can to protect it.

That’s why COP26 was so crucial to our understanding of our environment, improving our resources and systems and developing plans on a global scale. *no taxpayer funds were used for this trip

Moonfall reflects Roland Emmerich’s Fall from Grace

Embrace sleep souvenirs A review of Souvenirs of Sleep by Ling Ang The great Leonardo da Vinci once asked: “Why does the eye see a thing more clearly in dreams than the imagination when awake?”

To this, perhaps American playwright, screenwriter and novelist Marsha Norman had the best answer: “Dreams are illustrations from the book your soul is writing about you.”

Indeed, if sleep is a journey alone through the night, an involuntary expedition into our innermost desires and fears, then dreams may be seen as the souvenirs we pick up along the way – or so proposed

by Melbourne-based filmmaker Ling Ang. Ang is an established artist with a decade of productions spanning across the United Kingdom, United States, Asia, Europe and Australia. One can only imagine how her visions, experiences and perceptions of the conscious world may seep into her dreams.

To discover this, Ang has been documenting her dreams since September 2018.

Her recently published photo book Souvenirs of Sleep is an ambitious and visually aesthetic attempt to illustrate these “narratives” of her subconscious mind.

The book is truly beautiful, with photographs printed on transparent page inserts that “act as a veil over the dream text underneath”. In Ang’s words, these give the reader “a sense of the lucidity throughout the book – like a window into the subconscious”.

The book also has a custom printed linen cover co-created by graphic designer Ned Rahmanovic and lovingly produced

by Momento Pro. It matches the theme of dreaming while granting a sense of dignity to both the dreams and the photographs.

But the most curious part of the book is the text. Each of the “narratives” begins with “I dreamt of...” or “I dreamt that...” and is arranged either as a solid paragraph or in a shape or form related to the dream itself.

PASSION FOR PROSE WITH CHRISTINE SUN rowhead, a musical note, a keyhole, a ball, a leaf, a lightbulb, or even a coffin. The creative and fun design adds much visual interest to the book’s content.

More importantly, as these “narratives” of the author’s subconscious mind contain only descriptive words, the myriad ways in which they are presented – as images and/ or in combination with photographs – may be seen as the dreamer’s attempts to interpret her dreams. Like the photographs, the innovative imagery piques the reader’s interest.

In this sense, the book transcends its rich textual content and allows the author to playfully engage in a visual conversation with her reader. In the words of Ang: “[The book] includes recurring themes from my childhood and relationships, including hedonism, trauma and the afterlife.

Familiar landmarks turn into the locations of a sci-fi fantasy and I invite the readers into a private world of universal vulnerabilities, challenging them to explore their own inhibitions.”

The dumber, louder cousin of Don’t Look Up, Moonfall is an insubstantial dud from Roland Emmerich, the world’s preeminent disaster artist.

With the Moon falling out of orbit, new NASA director Jo Fowler (Halle Berry) and disgraced former astronaut Brian Harper (Patrick Wilson) scramble to save the Earth.

There is a difference between simple and simplistic: the characters of Emmerich’s Independence Day are simple but well-defined and engaging, while Moonfall’s characters are shallow and uninteresting, and Halle Berry and Patrick Wilson are naturally charismatic leads hampered by contrived dialogue.

The Moon is a looming, intimidating force for much of the film, yielding some staggering imagery, and the film plays with gravity in some exciting third-act set-pieces.

However, much of the film carries a strange lack of urgency, and many of the disaster sequences feel impersonal and fail to leave an impression, unlike the iconic destruction in Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow and 2012.

After a slack two-thirds, the climax is somehow both rushed and crammed with exposition, featuring a generic, trite backstory about alien ancestors and an AI uprising (and science fans may have a fit watching this movie).

Two themes feature prominently in Emmerich’s filmography: global disaster and conspiracy, the latter notably with Roswell in Independence Day and the Shakespeare authorship debate in Anonymous.

John Bradley is earnest and endearing as Dr Houseman, a conspiracy theorist working with Jo and Brian, but a narrative validating a conspiracy theorist and uncritically engaging with

Moonfall is playing in most Victorian cinemas, but if you want an Emmerich disaster movie with far better suspense and characters, watch Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow or even his 1998 Godzilla movie.

As smart as we believe we are, the professional advertising firms are paid millions to persuade us to buy what their clients have to sell.

Of course they target a particular audience to achieve particular ends.

If you are anything like average me, you were almost forced to believe, while watching the tennis or your favorite TV show, that you were part of the ‘All Australians’ who were waiting for ‘Married at First Sight’.

How many times were we told this every time a ball boy retrieved a ball or a player went for his or her towel, and what’s more, informing us that this was ‘Australia’s greatest social experiment’ – ‘a whole new level of love/(lust – my emphasis)’. The only experiment here was seeing if they could break

No, getting married at first sight was not the experiment – (damned lies).

Anyway, the term ‘first sight’ is a misnomer, as we were given titillating scenes of explicit foamed up steamy baths and G-string motel or bed scenes.

I have been involved in the well being and care space for over 30 years and four years ago taken on the management of the Foodbank program for Vantage Point Community in Lilydale.

What do you enjoy most about delivering food packages to people in your community?

To serve others with generosity and excellence knowing the food and friendship connection is making a difference in their lives.

What has been one of your most memorable moments while facilitating the foodbank program?

The moment I realised it’s never a ‘them and us’’ mentality. We are all valued human beings loved by God and we all need a helping hand at some point.

My husband worked in Lilydale for 30 years and we only moved to Mount Evelyn from Donvale five years ago. We absolutely love the beauty of the surrounds, the parks, cafes and of course the wonderful people.

VCE artists at The Memo

By Callum Ludwig Talented VCE students are being celebrated in an art exhibition on display at The Memo in Healesville, sharing their masterpieces creating during a challenging year of schooling.

Mooroolbark College 2021 VCE student Shayla Kimpton will be part of the Creative Showcase exhibit and found inspiration from the challenges the year presented.

Ms Kimpton said her work highlighted the need for hope and optimism alongside the doom and gloom students often felt during an interrupted year.

“I tried to symbolize it in terms of the colours I used, long drips and darkness to sort of symbolize those hard times, I guess,” Ms Kimpton said.

“But then I tried to contrast with vibrant orange flowers, things to show you can get through it.”

Ms Kimpton is part of 31 VCE and VCAL 2021 students from around the Yarra Ranges who have been given the opportunity to have their artwork displayed in the 2022’s Creative Showcase.

Ms Kimpton said getting to show her artwork off in the showcase makes the challenges of VCE and the events of the past two years feel like a significant achievement.

“It makes it feel like all the hard work and my perseverance and dedication throughout year 12 was all worth it. It feels good to show everyone and have people say you’ve done well, despite how hard it was at times,” she said.

Mount Evelyn Christian College student Holly Sharman is also grateful to have her work on displary at the Healesville Memo this month.

“Having people recognise the hard work put into it makes me feel really good about an outcome I’m really happy with,” she said.

“It’s also really nice this exhibition is free and you can see all the other amazing VCE artworks other people completed at the same time as me.”

Ms Sharman knew she always wanted the theme of her final piece to be relationships, and the restrictions due to Covid-19 lockdowns through her VCE period inspired her decision to revolve the piece around her beloved grandparents.

“I’m very much a family person. I don’t think I saw them for maybe a year or something when we were in lockdown. So it was important I got to draw this for them.” she said.

“It was also a surprise, so they didn’t know I was doing it until it was finished, which was really lovely.”

The family theme won’t stop there for Ms Sharman, who wishes to extend her portfolio of family portraits in future.

“People are definitely my favourite subject matter. I’ve always liked to draw portraits,” she said.

“Hopefully one day I’ll make a massive portrait of myself and my whole family.”

Mater Christi College student Gosia Piosicka explored the theme of gender expression in her work being displayed, particularly honing in on a feminine perspective.

“I knew from the beginning, I wanted to do it about women and femininity and tie it into growing up,” she said.

“Today, women have rights, we’re free to sort of do whatever we want. But there are still some underlying issues we face such as internalized misogyny.”

Ms Piosicka’s art depicted a story of a young woman embracing her sense of femininity and how freeing it can be.

“There’s this stigma in presenting really overly feminine, a weakness in that,” she said.

“I wanted to show liberation can be felt in sort of just being comfortable in who you are, especially as you grow older.”

Ms Piosicka utilised acrylic paints for underpainting, before oils such as linseed oils to finish, while using thick brushes to create depth.

Despite art being a favourite subject of Ms Prosicka, she said it was difficult adjusting to working alone from home.

“It made me realise how much I took for granted just being in the art room. Not only us-

ing the materials, but having my teacher there at my disposal all the time,” she said.

“I guess in a way, though, it made me work more independently and realise what I can do on my own.”

Ms Prosicka said the Covid-19 pandemic felt like an interruption and had an impact on her school experience.

“I found it incredibly difficult. I kind of enjoyed remote learning initially, because I’m a bit of an introvert,” she said.

“But over time, I think I just lost motivation.”

Her advice to 2022 VCE students and beyond was to tap into topics they are interested in, and explore from there. She encouraged students to choose a broad theme and then to explore mediums and techniques they wouldn’t otherwise use in their folio.

The exhibition is running from Friday 4 February through to Sunday 27 February, hosted by the Yarra Ranges council in collaboration with Burrinja Cultural Centre.

The Message of the Lyrebird to premier in Belgrave

By Parker McKenzie 11 years in the making, The Message of the Lyrebird will have an Australian premiere at Cameo Cinemas in Belgrave on 12 February, with all proceeds going towards the Sherbrooke Lyrebird Study Group.

The nature documentary, produced by Balangara Films, explores the relationships between the people who care for the Lyrebirds and explores misconceptions commonly held about the bird.

Producer and director Mark Pearce said he wanted to make a film about the Lyrebird because some of the most famous footage – David Attenborough’s Life of Birds – was filmed in captivity.

“The film touches on the misconceptions people have about the bird,” he said.

“I wanted to make an unconventional film because I’m an unconventional person, mailcommunity.com.au

“We wanted to capture the characters that interact and care for the bird, and explore their relationship throughout the film.”

Nick Hayward, the cinematographer for The Life of Birds, serves the same role in The Message of the Lyrebirds as the film questions whether lyrebirds will mimic sounds of human origin in the wild.

Alex Maisey, from the Sherbrooke Lyrebird Study Group, said the lyrebird was a special animal deserving of the feature film.

“I’ve been studying Lyrebirds for 20 years and this is some of the best footage ever filmed,” he said.

“That’s why I wanted it to be on the big screen, it was made for it.”

In 1975, the population of lyrebirds in Sherbrooke forest fell to an estimated 60 male birds. With the implementation of policies to protect the species, it is now estimated there are 160 lyrebirds.

Mr Maisey said the longevity of the Study Group – founded in 1958 - and the Friends of Sherbrooke Forest shows the importance the Lyrebird holds in the community.

“Sherbrooke Lyrebird Study Group is one of the longest running environmental groups associated with Parks Victoria,” he said.

“It shows the relationship people have held with the bird for decades.”

Mr Maisey completed his PHD in 2020 on the role of the Superb Lyrebird as an ecosystem engineer in Australia’s temperate forests.

After award-winning screenings overseas, the film is finally making its Australian premiere in Belgrave at 3pm on Saturday 12 Feburary, a short-walk from the lyrebird’s home in Sherbrooke Forest.

CFA says don’t wait More than half of all Victorians living in high risk bushfire areas like the Dandenong Ranges believe they will get an official warning if threatened by a bush fire, according to a CFA survey.

The CFA’s bushfire community survey, conducted annually, also showed 36 per cent of respondents expected they would be told when to leave, meaning many Victorians could be leaving it too late to act.

CFA Chief Officer Jason Heffernan said while emergency services are well prepared and the state has an effective integrated warning system which includes the VicEmergency app and emergency broadcasters, there are circumstances when Victorians may not get a warning.

“Fires can spread within minutes. On hot, dry and windy days fires can start quickly and threaten lives and homes. You need to be prepared and paying attention to the weather conditions ahead of time,” Mr Heffernan said.

“The community needs to know their triggers and use their senses such as sight and smell as well as their common sense to enact their fire plan. Grassfires are prevalent this season and can move at speeds of up to 25km per hour and jump highways.”

This year’s fire season outlook indicates a lower risk of prolonged bushfires, however, grass fires remain a high risk across Victoria after rainfall and fuel growth during 2021.

Mr Heffernan said people shouldn’t drive into or through high risk areas on hot, dry and windy days.

“Plan an alternate route or delay your travel, if possible,” he said.

Campaign to get illegal guns off the streets

By Renee Wood A public awareness campaign has launched urging people in Victoria to hand in illegal firearms or report someone who you suspect possesses one.

Crime Stoppers has joined with the Federal Government to spread the message, in an attempt to get illegal guns off the streets.

It follows on from the permanent national firearms amnesty coming into effect in July last year, which saw 11,000 guns handed in to the authorities.

Home Affairs Minister Karen Andrews encouraged people to hand illegal firearms in before police come knocking.

“Our message today is very clear, and that is, if you have an illegal firearm in your possession does the right thing and hand them in.”

The Government’s agenda is to keep the community safe by removing illegal firearms, which can be used in serious crimes and are often secured poorly.

Assistant Minister for Customs, Community Safety and Multicultural Affairs and La Trobe MP Jason Wood said criminals often target properties where they believe illegal guns might be kept, including farms.

“Illegal guns are often difficult to trace,

helping criminals kill without fear, repercussion or used in serious crimes,” Mr Wood said.

“We also know that victims of domestic violence are at greater risk of harm if their partner or ex partner has access to an illegal gun.”

Community engagement and promotional events will be held in regional and metropolitan communities during the three month campaign.

Victorians are also being urged to anonymously report an illegal firearm owner to Crime Stoppers.

Crime Stoppers Chief Executive Stella Smith now is the time to hand it in or risk being reported on.

“I commend the Australians for coming forward but more work needs to be done to keep Australians safe from gun violence,” Ms Smith said.

“For those who know of someone who has an illegal firearm and aren’t prepared to hand it in, then call Crime Stoppers.”

The permanent amnesty means people who have an unregistered firearm or firearm-related item can surrender it to a police station anonymously without penalty, for registration, sale or destruction.

Licensed firearms dealers can also receive surrendered firearms in most states and territories. An unwanted firearm may also be handed in.

The survey showed 17 per cent believe they will definitely get help from the CFA if impacted by bushfires, while more than a third believed they are likely too.

“CFA’s mission is to save lives and property and of course we will do everything we can to respond to everyone who needs us, but there are times during major bushfires when we simply can’t get a truck to every house,” Mr Heffernan said.

“People need a plan – exactly what are you going to do for your family, loved ones, pets and other animals if a fire occurs and a fire truck may not be able to get there? If you have a plan, you can act to survive.”

Victoria’s integrated warning system includes the Vic Emergency website, app and social media channels, VicEmergency Hotline 1800 226 226, emergency broadcasters including ABC radio, Sky News TV, commercial radio and select community radio stations.

Warnings are issued when an incident is occurring, and you need to act. Make sure you understand the three levels of warnings and additional messages such as ‘Evacuate Now’: Advice – An incident is occurring or has occurred. Access information and monitor conditions.

Emergency Warning – You are in imminent danger and need to act now.

Sod turning for pavilion

By Mikayla van Loon The start of construction on the Mount Evelyn Sports and Community Hub (MESCH) was officially acknowledged with a sod turning to mark the historic day.

Mount Evelyn football and cricket club members were met by state, federal and council leaders at the construction site on Friday 4 February.

MESCH president Bryan McCarthy said he was so pleased to finally see some movement on the build after a long effort in getting to this stage.

Campaigning from both Yarra Ranges Council and community members to establish a design for the new building and get it approved, funded and ready to go took over six years.

“This is a significant event for Mount Evelyn. We’ve been on a significant trail for a great deal of time now,” Mayor Jim Child said.

“To see what’s going on in the background is just amazing and when you think of what was here before this all started, this is going to be so much better.”

Mayor Child said these types of projects are the ones the community benefit from the most, particularly with the inclusion of female sport as a priority.

“To see the involvement in female participation in sport and also the cricket and footy that goes on at the moment is just absolutely outstanding,” he said.

“So to have this facility, delivered now, with the contributions from the State government, the council and also the Federal government, we really look forward to the progression of this project.”

As a five million dollar project, collaboration between all levels of government was required to fund the build, alongside significant contributions from the sporting clubs.

Casey MP Tony Smith said he was proud to pledge one million dollars towards the proj-

ect at the last election but has been pleased to work with Monbulk MP James Merlino to see the project get started.

“It’s a partnership where we’ve come together but that partnership matters. It’s the three levels of government and as you “When James and I look at the challenges that have been here, it’s fantastic for you, the footballers and the netballers, to see them being overcome.”

Mr Merlino said after completing facilities in Montrose, Wandin, Olinda and Monbulk, it was time Mount Evelyn saw its new pavilion get off the ground.

“It’s years of a lot of sweat and tears, planning hurdles, getting the funding. Two steps forward one step back. It is literally years and years and years,” he said.

“So everyone representing the footy netball club, the cricket club, juniors and seniors.

Mount Evelyn’s known to have a really strong netball program, a really strong women’s program, this is a club going places and it’s your turn.”

Although it took quite a while to get to the sod turning ceremony, Mr Smith and Mr Merlino both said it would all be worth it once the first class facilities open to the clubs and teams to use.

Delays due to Covid-19 pushed the project starting date back by six months, with works only getting underway earlier this year.

Yarra Ranges Council expects the build to still be completed by the end of the year but Covid-19 is still causing some delays with materials and labour.

The next step in the project is laying the concrete which should be completed by the end of the month.

By the end of the project not only will it have new club rooms and change rooms but a community facility to host functions and events with an innovative design to make it completely accessible and wheelchair friendly.

Bowlers miss chance Saturday pennant had Monbulk 1 travelling to Ferntree Gully looking to hold their position in the top four. Eric Markham’s rink held a one shot lead eight ends, but then lost six of the next eight ends to trail by five shots. They were unable to match their opposition over the final ends and lost by 10 shots, 17 to 27.

Jim Bras’ rink started in great fashion end led by 10 shots after six ends. They were never seriously challenged and won by 12 shots, 23 to 11.

Tim Stapleton’s rink were within two shots after eleven ends, but then struggled to win only three of the last 10 ends to lose by 11 shots, 11 to 22.

Brian Smith’s rink held sway early and when they picked up five shots on the thirteenth end they led by nine shots. They lost a couple of multiples in the last four ends, but won their rink by three shots, 25 to 22.

Monbulk lost the overall by six shots and has lost its position in the four and missed an opportunity to enhance their finals hopes.

Monbulk 2 played Mulgrave at home and were expected to take the points.

Jim Anderson’s rink was tied at six shots all after 10 ends. They then dropped a couple of multiples and by the fifteenth end trailed by seven shots. On the next end they picked up seven shots to level the scores and then won

four of the last five ends to win by three shots, 19 to 16.

Graeme Goller’s rink dominated their game and by the tenth end they led by 19 shots. They increased this to 28 shots by the eighteenth end, then lost the last three ends to win by 20 shots, 34 to 14.

Alan Hamilton’s rink had a close tussle early where scores were tied after five ends. They then took complete control winning 12 of the last 16 ends to win by 24 shots, 35 to 11. Eric Furby’s rink had a tough battle trailing by nine shots after six ends. They then made some inroads into this margin, but went down by four shots 16 to 20.

Monbulk won the overall by 43 shots, 104 to 61 and have moved to second position on the ladder.

Monbulk 3 journeyed to Cockatoo in the first round of the summer competition.

Darren Ward’s rink were level after nine ends. They then lost the next three ends to trail by seven shots with three ends to play. They moved within four shots with one end to play and pulled off a miraculous victory picking up five shots on the last end to win by one shot, 14 to 13.

Alan Brooke’s rink struggled to get into the game winning only three ends to go down by 17 shots. Monbulk lost the overall by 16 shots, 19 to 35.

Monbulk keeps top spot Monbulk 1 who were on top of the ladder played finals aspirant Yarra Glen at home on Tuesday.

Peter Koomen’s rink led by six shots after 10 ends, but then lost the next four ends to be just one shot in front. The Monbulk rink finished strongly winning six of the last seven ends to win by nine shots, 13 to 22.

Jim Bras’ rink found themselves two shots down after eight ends. They then won seven of the next nine ends to lead by 10 shots and eventually won by seven shots, 23 to 16.

Monbulk collected the maximum points and won the overall by 26 shots, 70 to 44 to maintain top spot on the ladder.

Monbulk 2 played Berwick away from home with Graeme Goller’s rink starting well and were leading by three shots after twelve ends, however they lost eight shots in two ends to fall behind by five shots. They rallied and levelled the scores by the seventeenth end, but lost the

last four ends to lose by eight shots, 18 to 26.

Eric Furby’s rink was level after six ends, but then lost eight of the next nine ends to fall behind by 20 shots, eventually losing by 17 shots, 11 to 28.

Alan Hamilton’s team grabbed the initiative early and were 12 shots in front after 10 ends.

They then dropped seven shots in two ends but held on to win by 4four shots, 21 to 17.

Monbulk lost the overall by 21 shots, 50 to 71.

Monbulk 3 played Lilydale at home and had the better of the game up to the lunch break, but fell away on most rinks in the back half of the game to lose by 18 shots, 49 to 67. Peter Lee’s rink did well early and were one shot in front after fourteen ends. They then lost the last seven ends to lose by 10 shots, 12 to 22.

Mike Harris’ rink were one shot in front after six ends. They then took control and pushed the lead out to 14 shots after thirteen ends. However, they lost seven of the last eight ends to win by four shots, 24 to 20.

Bruce Cockerill’s rink was one shot in front after sixteen ends, but then faltered to lose the last five ends and go down by 12 shots, 13 to 25.

Round 11 was played over the weekend.

As vehicles get older, the air conditioning requires more regular servicing outside of your normal motor vehicle service. Aging hoses, seals and compressors will lose gas over time, with Kar Air recommending a service or regas every two years for cars less than 10 years old, and every year for cars older than 10 years.
