By Parker McKenzie A five-year battle for the development of a multi-storey complex in Belgrave seems to have finally reached a conclusion, with the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) upholding Yarra Ranges Council’s decision to refuse a planning permit.

VCAT made the decision after Pulitano Properties appealed a Yarra Ranges Council decision to reject a planning permit applica-

tion for the development of the site on 29 September, 2020. The original permit was submitted in 2017 and faced resistance and objection from local residents.

The tribunal sat for 16 days, double the original eight allocated for the matter to be heard.

“We have concluded that the proposal does not result in an acceptable outcome on the review site.” the tribunal said.

within the Belgrave Activity Centre and next to a Puffing Billy railway terminal, was earmarked for the development of a complex featuring a supermarket, shops, a cafe, offices and a childcare centre.

Director of planning, design and development Kath McClusky said the planning application was refused by council because it would overdevelop the site, impact the protected Puffing Billy interface and it did not meet the requirements of the policies within the Yarra

Ranges planning scheme.

“Council has presented a strong position at the Tribunal, calling a number of expert witnesses in traffic management, planning policy and urban design to support its case,” she said.

Code Brown called

By Renee Wood Eastern Health has joined the state’s healthcare system in entering a Code Brown to alleviate the stress on hospitals and ambulances due to rising Omicron cases.

On Tuesday 18 January, the Department of Health called the coordinated Pandemic Code Brown from midday on Wednesday 19 January and it’s expected to run for up to six weeks.

Yarra Ranges residents needing to access care should be aware of possible changes at local hospitals now the emergency management system has been activated.

An Eastern Health spokesperson said the Code Brown will help to focus on workforce availability.

“The main focus of the Code Brown is to ensure we have workforce availability to support the rise in Covid-19 patients attending the health service,” they said.

Changes are still being considered and Eastern Health expects to have more knowledge of what sites and services will be affected soon.

“Over the coming days and weeks, this picture will become clearer and this will dictate further what sites and services will be impacted.

Acting Health Minister James Merlino said the government thanks Victorians for their patient as they work on having other services restored.

“IVF is a challenging journey for anyone to go through, let alone in the midst of a global

pandemic, and we’re deeply sorry for the distress caused by affected services in recent weeks,” he said.

Child assaulted in Ferntree Gully Police are seeking more information after a 12-year-old child was assaulted by an unknown man in Ferntree Gully on Tuesday 11 January.

The child was approached and assaulted by the man at 6pm on the Blind Creek Trail near Mountain Gate Tennis Club.

Police are seeking public assistance in identifying the man using a composite image created from a description of the man.

Pulitano Properties has owned the site since October 1985 and commenced discussions regarding a possible redevelopment with council in 2015.

Monbulk and Silvan CFA attended a rescue in Olinda when Emergency services were called to reports of a person being trapped by the lower part of their body under an excavator on 18 January.

Firefighters were able to release the person from under the excavator by 7.20pm and they were handed into the care of Ambulance Victoria.

CFA members used chains to stabilise the excavator before using an airbag system and wooden cribbing to lift it off the man.

Ambulance Victoria confirmed a man in his 50s was flown by air ambulance to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with lower body injuries and a man in his 20s was taken to Maroondah hospital in a stable condition with upper body injuries after paramedics responded to the incident.

The shed hunt continues

By Parker McKenzie With the money raised for a permanent home, Upwey Men’s Shed continues to look for suitable sites for the construction of a community workshop in the Dandenong Ranges.

The Upwey Men’s Shed (UMS) is a non-forprofit, community based and non-commercial organisation with the aim of facilitating a space for men to work on meaningful projects.

President Gerran Wright said the group has raised the funds required to acquire a site to build their shed, however, they are still searching for a suitable location.

“We’re going into some discussions early this year. Hopefully those discussions will be fruitful,” he said.

“We’ll have some announcements later in the year, so we’re hoping this year we’ll get some good news.”

The organisation has raised funds including a $10,000 donation from local aged care provider Home Instead and $230,000 dollars in

Dandenong Ranges Community Bank has

pledged $80,000 to aid in the development and construction of the new location of workshop and shed for UMS.

UMS also achieved charity status and received a Deductable Gift Recipient status with the Australian Tax Office in 2021.

Mr Wright said the group has been meeting at community locations like the Upwey Township Hall and a RSL while it searches for a permanent home.

“We’ve had a lot of support from community groups, it’s just working through the different options,” he said.

“We’re casting the net a bit broader and we will hopefully be lucky in that regard and get access to a site.”

In 2021 UMS helped Upwey Primary school build possum boxes and provided essential items and money towards residents impacted by the storms in the Dandenong Ranges.

The organisation plans to run more activities out in the community including fishing, motorcycle rides, walks and camping into 2022 to help grow the organisation.

Upper Ferntree Gully CFA recruiting new members

By Parker McKenzie Upper Ferntree Gully CFA is currently looking for new members to join their 100 per cent volunteer brigade.

Captain Peter Smith said volunteers are hard to find at the moment and the brigade is seeking people eager to help those in need.

“We are looking for somebody who wants to take part in the community,” he said.

“It’s a lot of hard work, but it is good fun with camaraderie.”

The Country Fire Authority is a volunteer fire service responsible for fire suppression,

rescues and accident response.

Mr Smith said the brigade has members who haven’t played sport or been around clubs before and all are welcome.

“We are all of the above in some ways,” he said.

“It’s a way of meeting people, getting to know the community and learning new skills.”

Upper Ferntree Gully CFA is based at 1213 Burwood Hwy and has been active since 1926.

Mr Smith said the members of the CFA

have changed in his 49 years of involvement in the organisation.

“The CFA used to be based mostly on hands on people like tradesmen and outdoor workers,” he said.

“A lot of office people never put their hands up to do it, because it is out of their comfort zone, but we take people out of that comfort zone and teach them skills.”

Full training and gear will be provided to volunteers.

Mr Smith said while there is a commitment required to join the CFA, training for

new and old members is flexible.

“We do what is called a general fire fighters course, we are running one in house right now, and it takes seven or eight weeks but you get to train with the regular members,” “We train on a Tuesday night and a Sunday morning, but I don’t expect all my members to be there every Tuesday and Sunday because number one on the agenda is family, number two is work and number three is the brigade.”

Cash splash for Burrinja

By Parker McKenzie Arts in the Dandenong Ranges has received a boost, with Burrinja Cultural Centre in Upwey receiving over $450,000 in funding from the Victorian state government’s Creative State 2025 strategy.

The $461,962 in funding was allocated to Burrinja Cultural Centre to “allow creative organisations to plan ahead and create the art, experiences and festivals that Victoria is famous for.”

Burrinja Creative Director Gareth Hart said they were thrilled to receive a call from the minister for creative industries’ office last week.

“The arts sector has had a brutal run through Covid, the last two years creating havoc and chaos for our much loved artists, industry, organisations and audiences. This funding will help Burrinja, and thus the local community, to recover towards a bright, creative future.” they said.

“This funding recognises the significant work and long term impact that Burrinja has had in our community, “Looking forward, it will enable Burrinja to invest in greater support for creativity and creative activity in the region, by supporting local artists to do what they do best: bring colour, questions, creativity and critical thinking into our lives.”

Artist Jason Marx, who uses an art studio at Burrinja Cultural Centre, said the studios are wonderful to work in.

“We’ve been able to achieve a lot in terms of creative flair, style and products, both using this space and the workshop which we used for a year or so with the mural,” Mr Marx said.

“There’s a really nice community, space and environment. Working here for as long as we have has taught us a lot and allowed us to be quite free.”

Minister for Creative Industries Danny Pearson said Victoria is home to organisations that provide career pathways, jobs and deliver a stunning range of creative experiences.

“From internationally acclaimed companies to grassroots collectives, social enterprises, fashion labels and festivals, we’re making sure Victoria’s outstanding arts practitioners have the support they need,” he said.

“This is an investment in the future of our creative industries and the thousands of jobs they support that reflects the diversity of Victoria’s talent and our communities.”

Burrinja Cultural Centre runs art galleries, live performances and music from local artists. Its aim is to “build community through art.”

Gareth Hart said they are thankful for the support Burrinja receives from the state government and Yarra Ranges Council.

“Burrinja has a 21 year history in the region, which has continued to help shape the creative landscape of the Dandenong Ranges,” they said.

“Our future is driven by the goals and impact outlined in our newly launched Strategic Plan, and now with the help of Creative Victoria & the State Government, Burrinja can create more opportunities for local artists and audiences to lead creative lives.”

The total amount of funding allocated includes money received from Sustaining Creative Organisations COVID recovery funding in 2022.

Mr Warlters said by working with likeminded organisations, Rural Aid can achieve greater results.

“If it was just simply Rural Aid, or Bushfire Recovery Victoria or even just one of these six councils seeking to do this, then that the impact can still be significant,” he said.

“It can be magnified a whole lot more when you get other parties involved.”

Mr Warlters said often a natural disaster – like the June storm – can capture headlines, but the rebuilding takes time.

“People want to help where they can, but very quickly we then move on and we forget about it, it’s just human nature,” he said.

“We don’t realise that the person who’s been impacted still has this recovery period ahead of them that takes months, “We don’t then get to appreciate the frustration that an individual or a group of people that have been impacted might be experiencing.”

By Parker McKenzie Rural Aid, Bushfire Recovery Victoria and Yarra Ranges Council are working together to recycle the large amounts of fallen timber from the June Storms and turn them into free fence posts for businesses and farms.

While the program is still in the early stages, Rural Aid chief executive officer John Warlters said the program was a “virtuous circle”.

“We’re collectively working together to gather up that timber that’s become available and then have that that timber milled to turn it into fence posts that will be collected and then distributed back to eligible farmers,” he said.

“Rather than having that resource destroyed, cleaned up and burnt, pulped or disposed of, we’re able to capture that resource by collectively working together to have it milled and turned into fence posts.

Hills inspire kid’s book

By Parker McKenzie An award-winning sound designer has published a semi-biographical debut children’s novel, inspired by his life growing up in the Dandenong Ranges.

Gareth Vanderhope authored and illustrated The Hills Kids, a novel for children aged eight to twelve, drawing from his early experiences in Kallista in the 1970s and 80s.

After winning two BAFTA awards for his sound-design work on the films Shine and Moulin Rouge, Mr Vanderhope left the film industry and pursued a career in health..

Mr Vanderhope said the book was an opportunity to continue the creativity and storytelling he learned working in film.

“My way of bridging or finding a way of connecting that all was to write a novel. It enabled me to think about creating a story that was like a kids imagination becoming a film,” he said.

“In their mind they can create sounds and

Picture: SUPPLIED they can be the cinematographer, but going beyond that, smells and sensations can also be imagined through the story.”

The comedy and adventure book - the first in a planned series - was launched at an event

in Monbulk in December, 2021.

Mr Vanderhope said his own experiences underpin his writing because “life is stranger than fiction.”

“Some of the crazy things that happened back in the 1970s and 80s, I just couldn’t have dreamed up,” he said.

“I’ve had these stories rattling around my mind for many years, so when it came to writing it down it was like I’ve got to tell these stories, because it’s a snapshot in Australian history and on a micro level it’s a snapshot of history specific to the Dandenong Ranges.”

According to Mr Vanderhope, the book launch was attended by people who inspired the character and stories within his book, although “they’re obviously a lot older.”

“They were there at the launch and it was such a beautiful coming together,” he said.

“The launch was about bringing together these people and characters from my past to create a wonderful, inspirational and creative

environment for kids to flourish, for them to come together with the new community in the Dandenongs.”

The “hilarious novel filled with mystery, kooky characters, and nature’s wonderments” focuses on three children and a dog “as they embark on an adventure in their foresty neighbourhood.”

Mr Vanderhope said the Dandenong Ranges has a special place in his heart.

“It’s a place where, over generations, you’ve got people like CJ Dennis and Tom Roberts and many artists that have been drawn to what seems to be a very powerful creative force in the Dandenong Ranges,” he said.

“It’s the intersection between nature, creativity and the challenges of living in an environment that can be bountiful, but also can be brutal and harsh.”

Plan to keep schools open for term one announced The Victorian state government has released a four-week plan to ensure school and education settings stay open for the start of term one, with a focus on the use of Rapid-Antigen Tests (RAT).

Premier Daniel Andrews and Education Minister James Merlino announced on Sunday 23 January the plan to use RATs for surveillance testing along with improved ventilation, vaccination coverage and workforce planning to ensure education is not impacted by Covid outbreaks.

Mr Andrews said face-to-face learning is

the best option for kids’ learning and wellbeing.

“That’s why we’ve done the work to get students safely back in the classroom from the start of Term one, and make sure they stay there.” he said.

The government said they will deliver more than 14 million RATs to schools, early childhood education and care services, with 6.6 million tests earmarked to be delivered in the first week of term one.

The state government is recommending all primary and secondary student and staff, and early childhood education and care staff,

test twice a week at home before school or childcare.

“With vital Covid-safe steps in place like surveillance testing, improved ventilation and high rates of vaccination, we’ve done everything we can to make schools as safe as possible and we can’t wait to welcome all students back for Term 1.” Mr Merlino said.

Education staff will be added to the list of workers who must receive a third-dose of a Covid-19 vaccine by 25 February if they are currently eligible, or within three months and two weeks of receiving a second dose to continue working in education.

51,000 air purification devices will be delivered to government and low-fee non-government schools by the start of term one.

Mask wearing will continue for students in grade three and above while indoors.

Teachers will be required to wear masks at all times when not actively teaching or communicating with students.

Remote learning will be considered as a localised and short term last resort. The department of Education and Training will provide online resources for students in Prep to year 10 if they are isolating.

DAVID HILL The final candidate who has nominated for the Streeton Ward by-election is David Hill.

Mr Hill said the community should know about decades of experience in nursing.

“I spent more than 10 years at both Maroondah and Royal Freemasons Hospitals and other professional services in disabilities and mental health,” he said.

“I’ve given back to our community as an elected Director of a Community Bendigo Bank, spending four years property and tenancy, governance and community investment.”

Mr Hill said he has never been affiliated

with a political party.

“I’ll truly work towards a real freeze on rates, not just accepting council’s constant maximum increase allowed that has been occurring for the last 10 years,” he said.

“I’ll make a difference to our infrastructure, community sponsorships and support Streeton Ward in every way possible.”

Mr Hill said too many councillors run as part-time, which in his opinion doesn’t serve the community well.

“I will give a full-time commitment,” he said.

“I’ll dedicate my resources to achieving the best outcomes and support, and make a fair dinkem difference that can be measured in real terms.”

GAVIN WOOTEN Gavin Wooten is the Liberal-Democratic Party endorsed candidate for the Streeton Ward by-election and believes council needs to avoid raising taxes and embrace smaller government.

Mr Wooten said he has been working for the Department of Justice and Community Safety in corrections for three years, which encouraged him to run for council.

Before working in corrections, Mr Wooten was a baker for over 15 years.

Mr Wooten said his main goal is to try to stop rate increases.

“Families have been under enough pressure in the last two years and they haven’t been able

to get the services that council can provide because of Covid, so I don’t think that increasing rates would be very fair on them,” he said.

Mr Wooten is endorsed by the Liberal Democratic Party, which espouses the ideals of small government and free markets, despite only being a member for two months.

“I have been searching around the last two years for a party that I consider to be sort of on par with what I think,” he said.

Liberal Democrats think that they should be less governing of the people and more of the state councils.”

Mr Wooten said he grew up in the Maroondah Ward, before moving to Streeton Ward in the past year.

“I’m a pretty straight up and down, easygoing regular bloke that’s been a baker and worked in corrections” he said.

DOUG MACDONALD Doug MacDonald believes his history in business management and accounting will help him streamline Yarra Ranges Council if he is elected as councillor for Streeton Ward.

“I believe in a lot of cases there’s too much emphasis put on political correctness and not enough put on getting the best benefits for the ratepayers from the rates they pay,” he said.

“I’d try streamlining the council’s mechanisms and efficiency to get the best results and try to keep the influence of political correctness and rubbish out of the system, because

it doesn’t achieve anything for the ratepayers.”

Mr MacDonald said this isn’t his first time nominating for councillor of Streeton Ward.

“I actually ran in the last election and got 13 per cent of the primary vote in that election while the winner got 18 per cent, so didn’t do too bad there.” he said.

Mr MacDonald has lived in Olinda for over 40 years and said he will offer an unbiased opinion to council without political interference.

“Unfortunately most councils or councillors are puppets for the big political parties,” he said.

“They influence local items for the benefit of various state or federal politics.”

12,415 Victorians were enrolled in the Streeton Ward at the last council election in 2020.

As a teacher living in Launching Place, Mr Mikelsons said he is running for council because he wants to make a difference.

“I want to help people and have some influence over how the direction the council takes in their deliberations,” he said.

Mr Mikelsons has been a part of the Greens Party for 13 years and has been working in schooling and education for 38 years, currently as an emergency relief teacher.

The Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges green wedge is the largest of Melbourne’s 12 green wedges.

Yarra Ranges Council adopted a management plan for the area in 2010, which dictates the strategies and policies in place for developing and protecting the area.

Mr Page isn’t affiliated with any political party and said if elected to council he would offer more encouragement for sustainable farming.

“Whether that’s electricity through solar, wind or farming, or helping smaller farms or people that want to get into having their own chickens, animals or even fruit trees, so that we can give some advice or help to them,” he said.

“I think council is doing better than in other areas, but I think they could lift their game when it comes to agriculture and supporting people like myself that want to get into farming and try and be more sustainable that way.”

Mr Fullagar said he has been active in improving the vibrancy of Streeton Ward and Upwey in particular.

“I describe myself as a person who leads from behind and I love working with likeminded people and creating a better feel around the town,” he said.

“I’d like to advocate for people if they have a particular and reasonable belief about things, I will listen and act on that and I’ll advocate strongly for them.”

Local farm-owner Jarrad Page has nominated for councillor in the Streeton Ward by-election to help share his experience in sustainable farming within the Dandenong Ranges.

Mr Page said he is running for council because he wants to help out and give back to the community.

“I’ve got my vision for what I want with my property and it really matches what the council’s mission is for agriculture and farming, because I’m in a green wedge and I’m someone with a very small hobby farm,” he said.

“I’m enjoying what I’m doing; it’s been in my wife’s family for 40 years. So we’re just trying to get involved with local council and see what I can do to help.”

“As a Greens candidate I want to advance a liveability climate plan and try to do as much as we can to move towards a carbon neutral municipality.”

Second shot at survival

By Parker McKenzie Kalorama locals Mark Wales and Sam Gash may have won the ultimate prize after meeting on the set of Survivor, but now the married couple are returning for their second shot at $500,000.

While competing on the show in 2017 the pair hit it off, and since have welcomed a son Harry into their family and married in Monbulk in 2019.

“I think at one point Survivor had a better strike rate than the Bachelor for relationships,” Mark says.

“I never thought that I would be even open to that as a possibility when I was there,” Sam says.

“I’m quite a competitive driven person, so I wanted to play the game of Survivor the first time.”

With the pair now competing together in the already filmed Survivor: Blood v Water – which will hit TV on 31 January – they spoke to the Star Mail about their experiences on the small screen.

Mark and Sam believe they are representing the hills on the show after a hard 2021 for the community.

“We’ve been in Kalorama during the storm that hit in the middle of the year,” Mark says.

“We felt the pain of the whole suburb getting shut down for about a month with no power, we were in complete shock. The suburb was basically destroyed, about half the houses in our street had a tree through them.”

“Even our local daycare just did a shout out to us on their storyboard saying let’s cheer them on,” Sam said.

“Our local pub up in the Mount Dandenong region, The Pig and whistle, is going to do screenings. We’re quite connected to our local community, particularly after going through the storms that we had last year.”

They will compete against 22 other contestants in Charters Towers in Queensland, a change from the tropical locations of previous seasons due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Before Survivor, Mark served in the military for 17 years and Sam was an endurance athlete, experiences they say helped them prepare for the show.

“After I left the military I’d been in the corporate sector and academics in the United States. By the time I was a survivor I had a pretty rounded career and it was the first time

I had the opportunity to use all those skills at once,” Mark says.

“Life Experience can really help you in the game because it just helps how you interact and engage with other people, and I think you also have more self-awareness of how you’re likely to behave when under stress or you’re tired or exhausted.”

“What I like to recall on is the adversity that I’ve experienced in my everyday life, and the

storms are one of them,” Sam says.

“I think when you remind yourself that you’ve gone through hard times of deprivation and adversity, you can remind yourself that you are tougher than you can imagine and I think that’s helpful in the game.”

The couple agrees they want to do the community in the hills proud and hope the local community continues to support them and each other.

Help to save open space

By Mikayla van Loon The campaign to keep an old school campus in Kilsyth as open space has been a constant battle for residents but those instrumental in the fight have reason to believe a decision will be made in early February.

With support from over 7000 Yarra Ranges Shire residents who signed a petition to keep the land, senior campaigner and Kilsyth resident John Phillips said he hopes those people will show their support again by contacting the council and ward councillors to plead for the land to be kept as open space.

The site at 150 Cambridge Road, once home to Pembroke High, has been used as community land since the school was demolished in 2013.

Mr Phillips said late last year Yarra Ranges Council were officially given the opportunity to purchase the land from the State Government for $6.44 million.

“In a way it means we’re still on the agenda and for the community, the ball is still rolling. I guess that means if it’s not sold [to developers], we still have a fair chance,” he said.

Councillor Len Cox has been working alongside Mr Phillips and other concerned residents to get this item on the council’s agenda at one of the meetings in February.

The Walling Ward councillor said it would be a disaster if developers got their hands on the vacant block because it would mean more medium density housing would be established in an already overcrowded area.

“There’s more and more backyards disappearing and we need more public open space, more passive open space than what we’ve got.

Animal Aid is welcoming all dog lovers and their canine pals to take part in Adventure Dog - A Cross Country Challenge, to help raise funds to care for all of the animals at Animal Aid. Kemp’s first review of the year a success Jagged Little Pill opened at the Comedy Theatre Melbourne on Sunday January 16 with a good crowd welcoming musical theatre back to Melbourne.

The story centres around the Healys, a seemingly perfect suburban family striving to hide the cracks beneath the surface when a troubling event shakes their community.

Driven by the themes and emotions of the Alanis Morissette 1995 album, the musical today has a powerful voice and burns with passion in its uplifting story telling.

A vibrant full of activity, well produced and directed, smooth flowing and a delight to see.

The music was very loud but consistent with the story, flashing lights added to the production. The main cast was Mary Jane Healy, Steve Healy, their two children, Frankie and Nick. Frankie was adopted by Steve and Mary Jane.

Kemp’s curtain call The other members of the cast were Jo, Bella and Phoenix.

As Mary Jane Healy, Natalie Bassingthwaighte gave an outstanding performance, playing the correct wife and mother but with a dark side - an excellent performance.

Her husband Steve was a good balance, performing well and catching the character as envisaged. Emily Nkomo was Frankie, another great performer and was well appreciated by

the opening night audience. Her brother Nick was played by Liam Head who was a good balance to the other members of the family, catching the mood of a teenager caught up in a situation beyond his control.

Maggie McKenna was Jo, a singer who achieved on opening night, something your reviewer has never seen in all the years of reviewing both professional and amateur theatre. Her song ‘You Never Know’ not only brought the house down it was a standing ovation for Maggie as she belted out the number - an amazing scene in the theatre.

The ensemble reminded one of a Greek chorus as they sang as background to the main cast.

A wonderful evening of theatre and a great welcome back after such a long absence of live shows.

Poetic beauty in Shakespeare adaptation The Tragedy of Macbeth Starring Denzel Washington, Frances McDormand and Kathryn Hunter Rated M The Tragedy of Macbeth is a film of staggering craftsmanship and may be one of the greatest film adaptations of Shakespeare’s timeless tragedy.

Directed by Joel Coen, The Tragedy of Macbeth is steeped in fine old-fashioned craft – emphasis on actors and dialogue, long steady takes, black-and-white cinematography and a quiet soundscape throwing strong emotions into sharp relief – and tinged with the Coen Brothers’ unique subtle surrealism.

Thespian and contortionist Kathryn Hunter plays the Witch(es), with her uncanny movements and unruly voice suggesting the traditional three witches within one body. Ross (Alex Hassell) is a mere medium of exposition in most adaptations, but now has a gratifying arc from a cold servant of Macbeth to a remorseful agent of justice. The climax has a second fight before Macbeth’s duel with Macduff (Corey Hawkins), thereby raising the stakes.

As a very late 2021 release, The Tragedy of Macbeth rivals Nitram as my film of the year.

Useful tips PASSION FOR PROSE WITH CHRISTINE SUN Many of our readers are writers aspiring to one day becoming successful authors.

Perhaps one of our New Year’s resolutions is to finally complete and submit that fiction or non-fiction manuscript that we have been working on for so long.

But a manuscript submission is much more than getting someone.to read and hopefully publish our written words.

Rather, it is quite similar to applying for a high-flying job. However talented we think we are, we need to “Show, Don’t Tell”.

As fantastic as our stories are, we need to convince publishers of their full potentials. And that requires some serious, savvy persuasion.

Interestingly, Carolyn Martinez, Director of Brisbane-based Hawkeye Publishing, recently posted a series of useful tips on how to stand out – for the right reasons – when submitting our manuscripts to publishers.

First and foremost are the essential rules that our manuscripts are professional edited; that we as aspiring authors understand our target audiences, marketabilities and potential competitors; and that we abide by the submission guidelines.

Next, Martinez reveals some amateurish mistakes that often cause a manuscript to fail in the first few pages.

Perhaps the most noteworthy is “Passive Phrasing”, which means the subject of a sentence is the person or thing acted upon or affected by the verb’s action.

For example, “The powerful cyclone destroyed the town” is straightforward. In comparison, “The town was destroyed by the powerful cyclone” seems verbose and weak. Furthermore, Martinez highlights several issues that can still cause a manuscript to fail even after it has attracted a publisher’s attention.

Among these, perhaps the most common is “Too Many Characters”. This can lead to so called “head-hopping” while considerably decelerating and weakening a story as the writer gets busy illustrating the actions, thoughts and feelings of every character included.

Another troublesome issue is “too many redundant words”, which can slow down a story’s pace. It is here that American author Stephen King’s warning comes to mind: “The road to hell is paved with adverbs.”.

Other readers may recall the following words from English writer Arthur QuillerCouch: “Whenever you feel an impulse to perpetrate a piece of exceptionally fine writing, obey it – wholeheartedly – and delete it before sending your manuscript to press. Murder your darlings.”

Finally, Martinez provides a list of ten features commonly shared by successful manuscripts. The publisher’s words are worth quoting to some length: “It’s hard work selling books, and the only way that books sell well beyond an author’s own personal network is when readers fall in love with a book, are so moved and changed by the experience of reading, that they rave about it to anyone who’ll listen. And that only happens through masterful writing.”

Also eye-catching is Martinez’s sound advice on how to be a good writer. To this reviewer, one particular sentence stands out: “Read books. How can you possibly expect to know what modern audiences devour if you’re not reading?”

Draft asset plan input needed

Health’s next gen For over 15 years community health service Inspiro has been supporting young people who have decided to pursue a career in health and this year is no different.

Inspiro will be awarding scholarships to the value of $22,500 to Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges students undertaking tertiary health science courses, to inspire the next generation of health professionals.

“For the seventeenth year, we’re giving back to young brilliant people who are already giving back to the community. We find these people absolutely inspiring,” Chair of Inspiro’s Community Advisory Group and Scholarship Panel Hamish Russel said.

To be eligible, applicants must live in the Yarra Ranges shire area and currently be undertaking or enrolled to commence tertiary studies in an accredited health science course at an Australian university or through the Vo-

cational Education and Training (VET) system.

Inspiro is encouraging all Yarra Ranges students studying an accredited health science course to consider applying.

The range of courses counted under the ‘health science’ umbrella is broad and may include dentistry, occupational therapy, medicine, speech therapy, psychology, podiatry and many more.

Judges are looking for applicants who show determination and commitment to their studies and the health and wellbeing of the community. Many recipients contribute to the community in several ways, including volunteering and other essential unpaid community roles.

Last year’s winner Ellie is undertaking a Bachelor of Exercise Sports Science while donating time to a youth camp and swimming school.

“This scholarship allows me to purchase textbooks, equipment and additional certifications and helps relieve financial stress as I work, study and complete placement,” she said.

Inspiro’s scholarships make an enormous difference to the lives of recipients, and many go on to work at Inspiro and other local health services.

Applications for Inspiro’s Health Scholarship are now open. All entries must be in by Thursday March 17, 2022 at 4pm.

Yarra Ranges Council is encouraging members of the community to give their input into its upcoming draft asset plan.

The plan establishes how council will manage its assets including buildings, roads, bridges, footpaths, stormwater drainage, parks and recreation facilities.

Yarra Ranges Mayor Jim Child said it is important for the community to have input on the drafting of the plan.

“The Asset Plan takes a long-term 10-year view of how our assets are managed, so it’s crucial that we capture the community’s thoughts on where our priorities should lie,” Cr Child said.

“The plan is also closely tied to the Council budget process, and given that the funding available for assets year to year is typically lower than the wants and needs of the community, this is the framework that sets out how we make decisions on our assets.”

A new asset plan is required to be drafted and prepared by council every four years.

People can participate in an online poll to highlight where the community believes priorities should be focused or register their interest in joining a deliberative panel to support of the development of the plan.

“No one knows our community better than the people who live in it, so I encourage as many people as possible to leave their thoughts and feedback throughout this consultation process.”

Hub works back in action

By Mikayla van Loon Works on the Mount Evelyn pavilion have resumed after the Christmas break, a welcome sight after many delays prevented the project from beginning until late last year.

Mount Evelyn Sports and Community Hub president Bryan McCarthy said the builder, MelbCon, have had to work with less staff due to Covid-19 restraints but works are still progressing nonetheless.

Construction workers have been preparing the site for plumbing and irrigation to be installed to be able to connect showers, toilets, sinks and stormwater, with a concrete slab to be poured in the next few weeks.

In addition to staff shortages, Mr McCarthy said the ability to access materials has been causing some difficulties for the project.

“I think the biggest issue is going to be materials,” he said. “[The council and MelbCon] are aware of it and they’re working on a project plan or a construction plan to try and minimise any of those delays.

“So they’re constantly looking at it to say, ‘Well, if we can’t get that this week, can we do something else in the meantime?’ So they’re just shifting things around to keep everyone busy and to keep the project moving forward.”

Yarra Ranges Council has confirmed the project is still on track to be completed later this year.

“From our perspective, it’s a recommenced.

We’re really pleased. We acknowledge the fact that Covid is impacting on the availability of staff and potential delays because of materials but we’re pleased that it’s restarted and things are progressing,” Mr McCarthy said.

While the build gets underway, Mr McCarthy said people are still able to apply to have a Foundation Brick named after their family.

Mr McCarthy said MESCH will keep the application process open as long as possible to allow as many people as they can to purchase a foundation brick.

Knowing that with school starting back soon and the cost to play sport might be hindering people’s ability to purchase a brick, Mr McCarthy said the committee will do their best to work with people to ensure they don’t miss out by way of a payment plan.

“We’re happy to do a payment plan, we’ve already got a number of people on a payment plan and that’s certainly helped a number of them make the decision,” he said.

“We don’t want anyone to miss the opportunity, and get through it and realise we should have made the effort to get our name up there.”

They then turned the game on its head winning seven of the next eight ends including a number of multiples to lead by seven shots after fifteen ends. However, they then dropped ten shots in three ends to trail by three shots with three ends to play.

The Monbulk rink then won the next two ends by shots shots and going in to the last end led by one shot. The opposition were able to win the last end by three shots which meant the Monbulk rink went down by two shots, 23 to 25.

Tim Stapleton’s rink had a close tussle early with scores level after eight ends.

They then won five of the next six ends to lead by six shots and were still three shots in front with one end to play. However, they dropped three shots on the last end which

meant the game was a tie, 19 shots all.

Eric Markham’s rink could not get themselves going in the first half of the game and found themselves 13 shots down after 10 ends.

They won more ends in the back half of the game, but went down by 14 shots, 14 to 28.

Brian Smith’s rink did not get on the scoreboard in the first eight ends where they found themselves 14 shots down.

They then won the next three ends to move within six shots, but were outplayed over the last 10 ends to lose by 14 shots, 13 to 27.

Monbulk lost the overall by 30 shots, 92 to 62 and have dropped down to sixth place on the ladder.

On Saturday, Monbulk 2 who are in top spot on the ladder hosted Dandenong RSL in what turned out to be a thrilling contest.

Eric Furby’s rink started well and after four ends led by eight shots. The opposition then lifted and scores were level after 12 ends.

The Monbulk rink then won the next four ends to lead by six shots and were able to hang on over the final stages to win by two shots, 19 to 17.

Jim Anderson’s rink was all square after five ends. They then lost six of the next seven ends to fall behind by 11 shots. They were able to win some ends in the back half of the game and reduced the final margin to nine shots, 12 to 21.

Graeme Goller’s rink picked up some multiples in the first half of the game and led by eight shots after 14 ends. They then lost the next six ends and going in to the final end, scores were level. The Monbulk rink was able to hold their nerve and took the last end to win 19 shots to 17.

Alan Hamilton’s rink were six shots down after 13 ends. They then won seven of the last eight ends to storm home and win by seven shots, 23 to 16 and give Monbulk the overall victory by two shots, 73 to 71.

Midweek report: close win against Warby Cricket scores On Tuesday, two potential finalists in Monbulk 1 and Warburton clashed at Monbulk. Jim Bras’ rink had a close contest early and were two shots down after the eighth end. They then won four multiples in a row to lead by 12 shots after twelve ends.

Their opponents then responded by winning six of the next seven ends to be within two shots with one end to play. The Monbulk rink lost the last end, but were able to hold on to victory by one shot, 23 to 22. Peter Koomens rink had big swings in their game after scores were tied at 14 ends.

The Monbulk rink then lost nine shots in three ends to trail by that margin. They then won the next three ends to level the scores going into the last end. Koomen’s rink was able

to win the shot on the last end to win 23 to 22.

This gave Monbulk the overall win by five shots, 64 to 59.

Monbulk 2 played away at Hampton Park and were unable to come away with any points. Graeme Goller’s rink led by one shot after 9 ends, but then lost the next five ends to fall behind by 10 shots. They then won five of the last seven ends to go down by four shots, 20 to 24.

again to lose by 10 shots, 11 to 21.

Monbulk lost the overall by 28 shots, 46 to 74. Monbulk 3 travelled to Donvale and struggled with their green.

Bruce Cockerill’s rink was two shots down after six ends, but then fell away dropping a number of multiples to lose by 30 shots, 13 to 43. Peter Lee’s rink led by one shot after seven ends, but won only three more ends to lose by 16 shots, 10 to 26. Mike Harris’ rink trailed early, but by the twelfth end were three shots in front. They were one shot down with two ends to play, but dropped a seven on the last end to lose by 10 shots, 15 to 25.

Local talent to play in Vic U18 and Cup Basketball Victoria has named the 2022 metropolitan and country teams for the upcoming Australian Under-18 Junior Championships, as well as the Kevin Coombs Cup team for wheelchair athletes.

The tournaments are set to take place at the Ballarat Sports and Events Centre from 10 to 17 April 2022.

The competitions will tip-off the 2022 Australian Junior Championships season, after the Under 20s and Ivor Burge Junior Championships were postponed from February until 19 April.

It will be the first Kevin Coombs Cup in three years because of the cancellation of 2020 and 2021’s tournaments due to Covid-19.

The team features Australian Paralympian Isabel Martin who represented the Gliders at the Tokyo Olympics and began her career at the Kilsyth Cobras in the Women’s National Wheelchair Basketball League.

Knox’s Paige Burrows has been selected for the Victorian Metropolitan U18s Women’s team.

Returning Victorian Metropolitan Women’s coach Michael Brookes was thoroughly impressed by the quality of the players up for se-

lection and said he was optimistic of the team’s chances at the championships.

“No one player stood out because they all competed so hard, they all were excellent,” Mr Brookes said.

“What they are capable of as a group has the potential to be special and that really excites me.”

Four-time state team coach Trevor Lee has named three players from Knox in his Victorian Metropolitan U18s Men’s list: Austin Rapp, Carlin Briggs and Luke Fennell, while Fraser Roxburgh has been included as an emergency.

Speaking on the selection process that started in November last year, Mr Lee showed his admiration for all of the players who put themselves up for selection and laid out his aspirations for a strong showing at the championships.

“Everyone stood up, you could see the sense of urgency and passion from the players and it was an extremely difficult team to pick,” Mr Lee said.

“Coming back with a gold medal; that’s the ultimate goal and we want to bring it back home to Victoria where it belongs.”
