Covid cases soar higher
Cafe kindness
The City of Casey and Cardinia Shire have both recorded massive jumps in active Covid-19 cases as infections in the South East continue to soar, overtaking the North West as the state’s epicentre. On Sunday 24 October, Cardinia experienced the largest increase in the number of active Covid-19 cases for weeks with 69 new active cases in 24 hours. Thankfully, only 19 new Covid cases were recorded for Monday 25 October, with a total of 1155. Casey saw 166 new cases recorded for Monday 25 October, bringing the total active case number to 2617. During these challenging times, random acts of kindness have become more and more prevalent throughout the local community - and their impact shouldn’t be underestimated. Wanting to give back to those doing it tough in the community while also supporting her favourite family-run cafe, local business owner Cait Benton decided to go above and beyond to put a smile on peoples’ faces recently, by paying forward 50 coffees for complete strangers who could use a little “pick me up”. “We are all a team in these crazy times and those who have not been as fortunate deserve the support where possible,” Ms Benton said - and there’s no doubt she’s helped turn a lot of locals’ days around with her generous gesture. Freedom joy The sun was shining on Friday morning as many shaggy-haired locals took to the streets with a spring in their step. After months of living with their lockdown locks, the first place many people flocked on the morning of 22 October was their local hairdresser, and the excitement in the air was plain to see. Mario Fallachi, the owner of Berwick’s New York Barbers and Fallachi Hair, said that people had begun lining up outside his business well before their doors swung open at 8am, and it was incredibly heartwarming to see. Cafes also sprung back into life, welcoming diners and many took advantage. STORIES PAGES 4, 10
