LOCKED-DOWN villages on Melbourne’s outer fringe are frustrated at being labelled “metro” despite being surrounded by rolling green Hills that see them fall under “regional” for almost everything else.

The announcement that regional Victoria was released from Melbourne’s sixth lockdown due to no Covid-19 case numbers left traders and residents in outer Hills communities questioning the blanket lockdown, with many of the townships not seeing a case in over a year – if ever. And yesterday, metropolitan Melbourne received the unwanted news that lockdown would be extended for a further two weeks until 2 September, with more restrictions – including a curfew – being added to the already extensive list.

Under the restrictions, metropolitan Melbourne is made up of 31 local government areas, including Cardinia and Yarra Ranges shires. In Gembrook, over an hour and 20 minutes from the CBD, local resident Tina says the metro label is a contradiction, with “everything else” deemed regional.

“For lockdown we are considered metro, but when it comes to postal delivery we are considered regional. We can’t get metro rates, we have to pay regional rates and wait longer for delivery,” Tina said.

Tina described the label as frustrating. “It gives us no benefit for anything else,” she said.

Owner of Cockatoo’s Brunch on McBride, Elise Turnedge agrees, saying she has “no idea” why the fringe township is considered metro.

“Metro should be whatever is on a normal train line. You can’t catch a train here, you can’t even catch a bus to Fountain Gate from here.

“We have no mail delivery, we have dirt roads, in every other regard we are a regional

Cardinia Shire Council mayor, Brett Owen said that while the lockdown restrictions were a state government matter, he and the council acknowledged that the shire was home to many diverse communities and he welcomed them to reach out with ideas and suggestions moving forward.

“The implementation of restrictions is a matter for the Victorian Government’s public health response,” Cr Owen said.

“Council would welcome any consideration to an application of restrictions that acknowledges the unique qualities of our shire and local communities, including an understanding of the diverse geography in Cardinia Shire.

Neighbouring towns in the Yarra Ranges are also struggling with the metro classification.

Yarra Ranges Council Streeton Ward councillor Cathrine Burnett-Wake said council wrote to the state government on 8 September last year and again on 4 June this year urging a reclassification of non-urban areas of the shire allowing them to be excluded from metropolitan Melbourne lockdowns.

“A bureaucrat from the state responded with a refusal on 30 June. It was stated that such an action was “not available” because the power to ‘split’ a municipality to partially regional/rural is not available through the Local Government portfolio under provisions of the Planning and Environment Act 1987 - but what was refused was not what the council asked for,” Cr Burnett-Wake said.

Cr Burnett-Wake said we need a “common sense and practical approach to these lockdowns”, however, so far, “we are not getting one in respect to the Yarra Ranges”.

“Daniel Andrews announced that regional Victoria would no longer continue to be in Lockdown 6.0 because, and I quote, “fundamentally the function of not having cases in regional Victoria.”

“Yet, despite there not being a single case of Covid-19 for nearly 10 months, country communities in the Yarra Valley remain stuck in lockdown. It makes no sense.”

According to Ms Vallence, Lilydale has been Covid free for 330 days, Mt Evelyn for 352 days and Silvan for 348 days.

As of last night, a 9pm to 5am curfew has been put in place on metro residents, permits for essential work will be needed once more and parks and exercise equipment will be closed.

Large construction projects will be reduced to 25 per cent of workers onsite, while smaller projects will be limited to five people.

GAT moved This year’s General Achievement Test (GAT) for Year 12 students will be rescheduled to a later date due to the state’s ongoing lockdowns.

With ongoing community transmission still occurring in metropolitan Melbourne, the Department of Health’s public health team has recommended the GAT be rescheduled, reducing the risk of a further outbreak with large cohorts of students taking the test together.

As Victorians work to run the current outbreak of the Delta variant to ground, a new date will be determined in the coming days to give schools and students certainty that the rescheduled test will be safe to go ahead.

On the rescheduled date, students who are in quarantine as positive coronavirus cases or primary close contacts, as well as schools deemed exposure sites, will receive an exemption from the GAT. This will not disadvantage students’ results and will be taken into account with the Consideration of Educational Disadvantage process.

Minister for Education James Merlino said: “Victorian students have done an amazing job adapting to another year of disruptions – but we can’t risk another outbreak in a school, so we’re rescheduling the GAT to keep every school community across Victoria safe.

“Whether it’s special consideration for every student in Year 12, or extra mental health and tutoring support in schools, we want any student who is struggling to know that we’re here to support them all the way.”

In a normal year, individual students are assessed for special consideration on a case-by-case basis – but the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority will again use the CED process to finalise VCE results for each and every student completing one or more VCE or scored VCE VET Unit 3-4 sequence in 2021.

Consistent with the approach in 2020, the process considers a range of data alongside exam results to calculate final VCE results - like the GAT, comparisons of performance across all assessments and schools and other learning data.

The process will also include assessments of the individual impact of coronavirus on each student including school closures, direct impacts on students’ health, ongoing issues with remote learning and mental health challenges.

The Department of Education and Training and the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) will support schools in the coming weeks to make appropriate CovidSafe plans to hold the GAT.

Theft a kick in guts

By Shelby Brooks and Taylah Eastwell Heartless theives have targeted the Emerald SES unit as volunteers braced for damaging winds expected to hit the area on Wednesday 11 August.

A generator battery, car trailer, wrecked car and four mag wheels were stolen from the unit base over the weekend.

Unit controller Ben Owen said it was a “kick in the guts”.

“I’m pissed off,” he told the Gazette.

“We’ve madly got a mechanic up this afternoon to put a new battery in the generator and to check it.

“We can’t be losing power to the facilities on a night when we need to respond to people’s needs.”

A cold front cleared the east of the state Wednesday evening, with damaging north to northwesterly winds averaging 50 to 60km/h and peak gusts of around 90-100 km/h forecast across parts of East Gippsland, North Central, North East and West and South Gippsland forecast districts.

It comes just two months after damaging winds struck the Dandenong Ranges.

VICSES Emerald unit volunteers experienced one of the busiest 48 hours recorded in the organisation’s history, receiving over 800 calls for help.

Ben said the crew had already responded to eight call outs for help between 3pm and 4pm on Wednesday afternoon.

“There’s reports the power is out in Cockatoo already,” he said.

Although the car trailer was predominantly used to transport donated cars to use for road rescue training nights, Ben said it was the last thing the unit needed to worry about.

“Our concern now is they’ve had four or five days head start,” he said.

“Hopefully someone saw it and thought that’s strange.”

The car trailer registration was Z36890 and the stolen car was a 4WD that had been donated to cut up for training.

“Someone might have stolen it if they have the same kind of car or because parts could be worth something,” Ben said.

“With Covid lockdowns it’s been hard to pinpoint when exactly they were taken,” he said.

“We noticed an issue with our gate Monday but we think it was Friday night.

Ben said the frustrating part was the money needed to replace the trailer and generator battery.

“The bill will have to come out of money donated to us for other things,” he said.

“It’s really heart breaking to come in and see

our unit in such a state. Incidents like this risks our volunteers’ ability to provide appropriate storm response and road rescue services during a vital time of year.

“We are all really devastated. After the last few busy months we have had, and with the current Covid-19 climate to top it off, it’s just really frustrating and ultimately it’s the community that suffers.

“Hopefully we can get the equipment back as soon as possible, and continue to do what we do best - support our local community”.

But in a heartwarming act of community spirit, listeners to Neil Mitchell’s radio program heard Ben on Thursday 12 and Friday 13 August, and the calls offering help and money came flooding in.

Ben said listeners offered the unit enough money to get a brand new trailer built, and one trailer-building listener rang in and offered to build the trailer at cost price.

“It all come together really nicely, it was really nice,” Ben said.

“We could have gone through insurance but there would have been an excess but now we are getting the trailer built at no cost to the unit,” he said.

According to Ben, the stolen trailer cost around $12,000 but will be built for $6,000, leaving the unit with some leftover funds to cover other stolen equipment.

Hills mates take the Grampians by bike

By Taylah Eastwell Two Hills mates are gearing up to pedal a 537-kilometre route through the Grampians as part of the Great Victorian Bike Ride.

Kallista’s Tommy McBride, 16, and longtime pal Marco, from Menzies Creek, have vowed to traverse the winding roads of the Grampians as part of the biggest multi-day ride in the southern hemisphere.

The nine-day bike riding holiday is broken up by a bit of fun, with riders camping with around 3,000 other cyclists at the end of each day.

Starting in Rainbow on Saturday 27 November, riders will travel through the picturesque countryside of Brim, Horsham, Halls Gap, Dunkeld and Pomonal before finishing in Great Western at Seppelt Winery – averaging around 80km each day.

The boys will be joined on the ride with Marco’s dad, Dom, and his friend Derrick.

The group canoed together down the Glenelg River in April and are looking forward to riding together for their next adventure.

Tommy and Marco are both avid bike riders, having rode to the nearest town within their 5km radius during lockdown to buy fish and chips for lunch. They both love riding around the Hills and getting outdoors.

The mountain bike trails around the Dandenong Ranges and Yarra Valley is where most of their fun is had.

Tommy and mate Marco are participating in the 37th annual Great Victorian Bike Ride this November.

“I love riding the mountain bike trails around the Dandenong Ranges and in particular Silvan as well as Lysterfield Lake MTB Track,” Tommy said.

“Anything that challenges me and pushes me and gives me that adrenaline rush – I love

the jumps – its awesome. Buxton is great fun too and we’re looking forward to getting up to the Warby trail when it is opened,” he added.

Tommy said it is disappointing that the June 9 storms destroyed parts of the Silvan trails.

“The destruction is extreme. Hopefully it will be cleaned up so we can get back to it as it’s healthy being outdoors doing something I really enjoy,” Tommy said.

For Marco, the best tracks are found at Lysterfield Lake or along the Warburton Trail where he and his dad did the Eastern 80 charity ride when he was in Grade Six. “The trail runs from Warburton to Lilydale and out to Yering Station in the Yarra Valley and all up is 47.5km one way. It’s mostly flat but has a lot of different scenery so it’s a really pretty and an interesting ride and there are places to stop for coffee or something to eat,” Marco said.

The riders will camp after each day of riding with around 3,000 other participants.

Participants will traverse through the Grampians National Park and pass a number of art silos. It will also include a ride out of Horsham to arts hub Natimuk and a rest day in Halls Gap, offering the full chance to slow down and see Victoria from the seat of a bicycle.

Learner rider dies A learner rider has tragically died while riding a motorcycle in Ferntree Gully over the weekend.

Police were called to the incident on Burwood Highway on Sunday 15 August. It is believed the motorcyclist clipped the gutter on a median strip along the busy highway just before 12.30pm, causing him to fall off the bike. The man died at the scene and is yet to be formally identified. Anyone who witnessed the crash or with dashcam footage is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.

Emerald fatal A pedestrian has died after being hit by a truck in Emerald.

Paramedics were called to the collision on Lawsons Road at around 4.05pm on Wednesday 11 August. The man sadly passed away while being transported to hospital. He is yet to be formally identified. The driver of the truck, a 72-year-old Emerald man, was uninjured and remained at the scene to assist police with their enquiries. Anyone who witnessed the collision or who has dashcam footage is urged to contact police. A report will be prepared for the coroner. To date, 136 lives have been lost on Victorian roads. There were 135 lives lost in 2020.

Friday 13th proves unlucky for speedsters A probationary driver has had his licence suspended for three months after being caught speeding at 125/km/h in a 90km/h zone.

Police intercepted the 18-year-old boy on Wellington Road, Lysterfield on Friday 13 August. He was given a $591 fine.

A second probationary driver was later detected driving while suspended in Knox.

The 19-year-old had his vehicle impounded for 30 days at a cost of $879 after being caught driving on Ferntree Gully road last Friday.

He will be required to attend the Magistrates Court at a later date to explain his actions.

In Belgrave South, a 42-year-old man was caught speeding at 111km/h in an 80km/h zone along Wellington Road. He was issued a $500 fine and lost his licence for three months.

Scam alert Lilydale Police have received information that another round of calls from the SCAM ATO/ Tax office are going around. Scammers have been using the Lilydale Police station number.

Plea for federal support Yarra Ranges Council is calling on the federal government to lend a supportive hand to Yarra Ranges communities who continue to suffer following the 9 June storms and multiple lockdowns.

According to council, the “conservative estimate” of funds needed for full storm recovery sits at $65 million, however this estimate was gathered prior to secondary impact assessments that provided a deeper understanding of the widespread destruction.

A dedicated recovery team has been established by council at a cost that council “simply can’t manage on it’s own”.

Yarra Ranges Mayor Fiona McAllister said

that the scale of the widespread damage inflicted on homes, buildings and public assets including roads, water, gas and telecommunications infrastructure has never been experienced before and is complex.

“The recovery from this storm event could take up to three years, and we are still uncovering new challenges and hurdles as the fullscale impact of the event becomes clearer,” Cr McAllister said.

“We are appreciative of the joint state and federal funding delivered so far, for Bushfire Recovery Victoria to assist residents with clearing trees from private properties that have been damaged.

“However, there remains a huge financial gap in resourcing and support equally many tens of millions of dollars even by conservative estimates. We simply can not do this alone and need other levels of government to commit money and resources to support our communities,” she said.

According to council, the majority of residents affected by the storms fall outside the eligibility criteria for the current funding program, leaving council to face the “enormous and urgent” job of cleaning up debris ahead of the next bushfire season.

If state and federal governments don’t step up support, council risks having to divert resources from other critical community servic-

es and infrastructure. Cr McAllister also highlighted the huge toll that the storm has taken on local businesses, compounding the impact felt from multiple COVID-19 lockdowns and resulting in a huge downturn in visitation to the region.

“Yarra Ranges is a hugely important part of the state’s, and indeed the country’s, tourism industry,” Cr McAllister said.

“We attract over seven million visitors each year and generate $620 million annually for the state, but the storm on top of the lockdowns has meant that many of our amazing local businesses are now struggling to stay afloat.”

“We need targeted support.”

By Taylah Eastwell Yarra Ranges Council is once again advocating to the state government to vastly improve telecommunications services in the region, with the impacts of lockdowns and recent wild weather amplifying connectivity issues.

With parts of the shire facing the yearround threat of severe weather events, better mobile and broadband accessibility for the region is vital, with recent storm events in the Dandenongs leaving many communities off the grid - unable to reach 000 or loved ones in their time of need.

The Star Mail understands that over two months since the June 9 storms, there are still around 700 NBN services yet to be restored.

Mayor Fiona McAllister said addressing the connectivity issues across Yarra Ranges has been critical for years and needs to be fixed, not just to help residents in emergency situations but also in everyday life with local businesses and schools being impacted.

“Connectivity has long been an issue for many of our townships in Yarra Ranges, and was raised as a significant issue following Black Saturday. Again it was the number one frustration we heard from our storm impacted communities when holding our post-storm community meetings,” Cr McAllister said.

“34 of our communities lost mobile and broadband service over the first three days of the June storms, meaning they didn’t know what was going on, couldn’t reach out to loved ones, access emergency information or even dial 000 for assistance.

“Two months after the storm event, NBN Co. confirmed that there are still 700 services – many of which are in the Yarra Ranges – yet to be restored, which makes things incredibly difficult when you consider so many of our residents have been working from home during the lockdowns.

Cr McAllister said it is “unacceptable that in 2021 our communities are still suffering and remain heavily disadvantaged due to poor telecommunications infrastructure”.

Council is undertaking its own study to gain a greater understanding of the mobile and broadband difficulties in the community, including a community survey of fixed and wireless internet services in homes and businesses and blackspot testing.

A series of virtual consultations are currently underway for the 2021 Regional Telecommunications Review.

Hurt over Census question

By Taylah Eastwell The wording of a question on this year’s census has become a subject of controversy, with many women taking to social media to express the feelings it triggered.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics asked participants ‘how many babies has (name) ever given birth to?’, prompting painful memories of still-births and miscarriages for grieving families.

Participants were told to exclude any foster, adopted and step children.

Red Nose Co-Chief Executive Officer, Jackie Mead said she was disappointed to see the question worded so poorly, saying it could be “so offensive to many women, including the women who have lost a baby”.

“Many women have told us they are upset and confused about the abrupt way this question was worded and many were left in tears while completing their census.

“Sadly, one in four Australian pregnancies end in miscarriage and one in 135 ends in stillbirth. This is an issue that affects so many women,” she said.

A question on this year’s Census has left grieving mothers in tears. her son to stillbirth said the question caught her completely off guard.

“I was in tears,” she said.

“I wasn’t sure what to write and I tapped the button for more information, but that just said something about how the ABS was trying to record statistics on the age of fertility of women, so didn’t help anyone in my situation answer the question.”

A spokesperson from Yarra Ranges mum’s

group, Mums of the Hills, said local mums were upset by the lack of prior warning they had for the question.

“While this question would be difficult at any time for mums who have experienced this kind of loss, it would be particularly tough for mums who have suffered through lockdown without traditional support networks,” the spokesperson said.

Mums of the Hills believe a statement at the start of future Census’s that acknowledges how questions may affect people in a range of ways, would go some way towards preparing people.

“The question also denied motherhood to mums who did not birth their children, a fact that has upset many.

“We appreciate the Census has to balance being brief with collecting enough information to inform future policy, but what you don’t ask is as important as what you do ask.

Expanding this question could have informed future health policies and provided greater insight into the diversity of our families today,” the spokesperson said.

she was “taken aback, firstly because it was on the same page as education levels and then I was like, why does it matter how many babies a person has had?“.

Angela disagreed. “I was actually relieved to be asked that question and have my late miscarried child acknowledged. Nobody remembers her/him except me,“ she said.

“It was always going to be a contentious question because processing pregnancy and child loss is such a unique individual process.

I note they don’t ask men how many children they have fathered,“ she added.

Erin said she was glad she wasn’t the only one who considered the question odd.

“Even the way the question was asked was certainly open to interpretation,“ she said.

Upwey Archies show will go on, despite restrictions

By Mikayla Van Loon The Upwey Archies are an important event on the artistic calendar for The Hills community.

And even with lockdowns and restrictions, the Upwey Township Group and Burrinja will be persevering to allow the competition to go ahead.

Having already started the process of getting the Upwey Archies up and running for this year, Upwey Township Group community member Linda Fullagar said the group will do everything they can to make sure it happens this year.

Unable to hold the competition last year because of Covid restrictions, Ms Fullagar said she thinks people will be looking forward to having the event back once more.

“I think it’ll be a good year and I think people are looking forward to doing things like this and sort of getting a bit of normality back to their lives,” she said.

“You don’t have to be a professional artist to participate in the Upwey Archies, everyone is encouraged to get creative, including professional artists,” she said.

After a particularly tough 18 months on not only artists but on the entire community, both Ms Fullagar and Ms Main said the Upwey Archies are a great way to shift some of those lockdown blues.

“Being creative is a great positive mental health activity, and it’s even better when you are using that creativity to celebrate the special people in your community,” Ms Main said.

“I think it would be a great thing to do during lockdown, to paint a person in an original artwork, celebrating a person special to you or to The Hills or to Upwey,” Ms Fullagar said.

“It’s so good for the soul to have a purpose and art is a great way of doing that and expressing yourself and having an art competition to go into is really good.”

The Upwey Archies allow artists to paint the portrait of anyone in the community, from

family and friends, to a complete stranger.

“After 18months of adversity from lockdowns, to storms, we’ve had so many, many people step up and become a local hero,” Ms Main said.

“I am hoping to see artworks that tell these stories, from that special Grandpa that video called everyday to read a bedtime story, to the hard working SES workers that safely removed a fallen tree from the yard.”

Each year the Upwey Archies have grown in portrait entries and Ms Fullagar is hopeful this year will be no different.

There will be two award categories, an under 14 award and an open award, as well as the Packing Room Prize.

This year there is also going to be a community favourites prize, making it the first year the community has been able to vote for their favourite portrait.

Artworks are displayed along Main Street in shop windows for all the community to see. “[It’s] really lovely because you just see people wandering down the streets looking

at the portraits, little kids pointing out the portraits and artists showing their friends and of course the traders are a great support of this too, letting their shop windows be the hanging place for these lovely portraits,” Ms Fullagar said.

“At times like this we need a little joy, and no matter what the restrictions are, once the artworks are in the windows of the businesses down the main street of Upwey, everyone, perhaps within 5km, is allowed to get their exercise walking through the street gallery,” Ms Main said.

Artists can head to Burrinja between 13 and 28 August to pay their registration fee and collect an art board.

Archie entries need to be returned to Burrinja between 1 and 11 October, for artworks to then go on display on 16 October.

Local residents and artists can attend the launch event at 11am on Saturday 16 October at the Upwey Village Green. Works will be on display until 16 November.

All dates are subject to change should restrictions and lockdowns continue.

Surprise at deer numbers

A recent aerial survey revealed there are 15 feral deer per square kilometre in Cardinia Shire.

“We need to know how many deer are around so that control measures can be put into place,” he said.

According to Mr Wenzel, deer cause a number of issues in the local area, including environmental damage, economic damage and also pose a threat to road safety.

“The damage the deer have done to the habitat of local wildlife, such as the lyrebird, is unbelievable. Also to the helmeted honeyeater at Yellingbo. They destroy native vegetation and indirectly affect our native fauna because they destroy their habitat. You also see them on the roads,” he said.

By Taylah Eastwell Upwey residents feel they have been left in the dark about an elaborate plan to turn half the local school oval into car parking.

Residents neighbouring the school grounds received a notice three weeks ago informing them VicTrack would be building a carpark halfway across the oval space as an “overflow” parking area while a new 640-space multideck is constructed at nearby Belgrave station.

Upwey resident Celina Korcak is concerned about losing what she describes as a “community space“ and says there has been a concerning lack of community consultation.

“There hasn’t been any consultation, it’s just happening and no one knows about it,” she said.

“At the moment people use it to walk their dogs and play, so it has been a shared space for a very long time,” Ms Korcak said.

“On a Sunday afternoon, it’s where people meet and let their dogs off and exercise, and this is going to change that whole aspect.

Ms Korcak said the notice from Yarra Ranges Council only gave residents until 21 July to give feedback, however council is still taking submissions.

According to planning documents, the temporary carpark is estimated to cost $2,060,000 and will occupy the eastern half of the Upwey High School oval near Upwey Recreation Reserve oval.

A report by the engineering and construction consultant, GHD, states that the objective of the project is to “construct infrastructure to be used temporarily by commuters during construction of the replacement carpark at Belgrave, while constructing new infrastructure for the Upwey Schools, including foot-

The site is said to be managed by the Department of Education.

“In conjunction with the temporary works, the project is also to allow for the hardstand areas to remain as a permanent feature for

later use by the Upwey Schools and the existing ovals are to be replaced with one larger, upgraded oval,” the GHD document states.

Ms Korcak said at the moment, the view of the oval from her home is as an inviting green space.

“When we view out the window it’s just a

green space at the moment, and a lot of other residents would see that as well. This wasn’t a concept when we brought the property, I know it will be good for the sporting club but I’m not sure what it means for the future,” Ms Korcak said.

The Yarra Valley had a special visitor recently as Hawthorn legend Shane Crawford journeyed to the region for the latest episode of Postcards.

The Brownlow Medal winner made a few stops along the way to the Valley, visiting The Sebel Melbourne in Ringwood, before continuing down the Maroondah Highway to pick strawberries at Yarra Valley Gateway Estate. He capped off a day-trip by enjoying a nice drop at Fergusson Winery and Restaurant in Yarra Glen.

Speaking to Star Mail, Mr Crawford said he is a regular visitor to the Valley and that it makes for the perfect escape from city life.

“I enjoy it anytime I get to work out that way, I’m always discovering new parts. It’s beautiful and connected to the city in that it’s very easy for people to get out there and enjoy all the rolling hills and find all the hidden treasures as you go along.

“I went to Fergusson Winery, which has been there for a long, long time and it’s just a nice little winery on about 10 acres and was nice to enjoy. Even in the middle of winter, I still enjoy going to the wineries and checking them out.

“One thing I’d like to do more is just go exploring. To just get in the car and go wherever it takes me because there’s so much to discover. I know a lot of people go out there to the wineries to have a look around, but I think if you just get in the car and go in whichever direction you feel, you won’t be disappointed.

“There’s something for everyone of all ages from young kids to a couple having a romantic weekend away. It’s like a hamburger with the lot, I suppose it just depends on which direction you go and what you’re looking for.”

which since the railway construction started, can get quite congested during peak times.

The other two main roads are Mooroolbark Road and Hull Road. Roadworks on Hull Road due to the building of the Kinley estate have reduced it to one lane with traffic control operators and the Mooroolbark Road/Hull Road bridge is notorious for queues of traffic during peak hours.

“If there was an outbreak in this area in the Yarra Ranges, this whole neighbourhood here would come to a complete standstill and you would not be able to get in or out,” Mr McCausland said.

Having contacted Yarra Ranges Council, Mr McCausland said it appears as though a traffic management plan wasn’t completed prior to the site being set up.

“It really does sort of sound like they just put it there and haven’t thought about it properly,” he said.

“I’m not anti testing, I think we do need testing sites but where [it is], it’s in a terrible location which is going to cause a lot of havoc.”

Not only are residents concerned about the risk of increased traffic in the area but the risk of aerosol transmission of the virus.

“The stories that were on the news about the cases that were contracted at AAMI Park and the MCG, there are people testing positive now who weren’t even sitting near them, so that says to me aerosol,” Mr McCausland said.

“And the fact that no one, with a fence line that borders onto it, is vaccinated either, so if you’re going to put a testing site in a residential area why don’t you look at the health risks of what could potentially happen.”

By Mikayla Van Loon Residents living on and near Wyuna Walk in Mooroolbark are outraged after not being consulted about a new drive through Covid-19 testing clinic that was set up in the middle of a housing estate.

A letter informing residents of a ‘proposed’ Covid testing site was received two days after construction had already started on Monday 5 July, with the opening date of Friday 9 July.

Wyuna Walk resident Tom McCausland said only receiving notification about the site after construction had already started was quite shocking.

“The fact that it said ‘proposed’ but it was already commencing, it was like a slap in the face,” Mr McCausland said.

Another resident whose back fence is only metres away from the testing clinic, Cameron Hunter said he was shocked and angered by the decision to put a testing clinic so close to people’s houses.

“The fact that it just blindsided us and came out of nowhere and then just the general lack of consultation or thought for the community doesn’t seem right,” Mr Hunter said.

“It seems like an easy way out for somebody, the line ‘ask for forgiveness rather than permission’ rings quite true with this here, that someone has made a call without consulting the people around them.”

Mr McCausland said there are a number of issues relating to the site but one of the major ones is the potential for increased traffic in a residential area, which is already surrounded by congested main roads.

An aerial survey conducted to assess numbers of wild deer in Cardinia shire has delivered “very surprising” results.

The Cardinia Deer Management Coalition conducted the survey using thermal imaging from above on 3 and 4 July, with the study unpredictably revealing there are currently 15 deer per square kilometre.

Cardinia Deer Management Coalition member and aerial survey co-ordinator, Johannes Wenzel, said the survey results confirm the coalition’s and the communities concerns about rising deer numbers in periurban areas.

“The results show quite high numbers of deer in the area, as expected, or possibly even more than expected. The density of 15 deer per square kilometre is incredibly high for a suburban area,” Mr Wenzel said.

“It also shows how community involvement in deer identification and control can work really well because the Cardinia Deer Management Coalition is just made up of community members who got together to do something about the rising numbers of deer, and it has shown to be really effective,” he said.

The choppers oversaw areas of Emerald, Menzies Creek, South Belgrave, Cockatoo, Dewhurst, Upper Beaconsfield, Harkaway and parts of Officer, Beaconsfield and Berwick during both a morning and evening flight to get a good idea of wild deer numbers.

The thermal imaging surveys were made possible through a $20,000 grant from the federal government to assess the local population of feral deer in the first step towards addressing the issue.

“Using thermal imaging for detection via helicopter showed to be very effective. We will probably see more of it in the future,” Mr Wenzel said.

A new website was also recently launched to support the National Feral Deer Action Plan as a platform for communities to share knowledge in feral deer management.

Minister for Agriculture and Northern Australia David Littleproud said feral deer were becoming a major problem across Australia.

“Feral deer cause significant impacts on agriculture, the environment and are a road safety concern in parts of Australia,” Minister Littleproud said.

“The new website will support the development and delivery of the National Feral Deer Action Plan, raise awareness of feral deer impacts, and provide strategies and tools for managing feral deer.

Feral deer estimated to cost land managers an average of $2,133 per year per property for control activities.

“It provides platform for communities wanting to manage the impacts of feral deer in their local area, and to share knowledge of what is and isn’t working, through videos, podcasts and events. It will also provide access to news articles and updates on research findings,“ Mr Littleproud added.

It is hoped the website will help groups across the country to coordinate their efforts to control feral deer and share knowledge on how to manage impacts.

Melbourne Water were contacted for comment.

Water authorities will be turning to Melburnians to help with a novel system of ‘smart’ rainwater tanks and urban lakes that can provide crucial water to support platypus habitat when it’s most needed – just before the breeding season.

Platypus in Victoria have disappeared from many urban areas due to habitat loss and modification, but some populations still exist across outer Melbourne, including Monbulk Creek in the Yarra Ranges.

A new water system from the University of Melbourne’s Waterways Ecosystem Research Group, Melbourne Water, South East Water and the Yarra Ranges Council is set to improve the odds for platypuses in Monbulk Creek.

“There’s often not enough water in streams for platypus,” Professor Tim Fletcher, from the University of Melbourne, said.

“The loss of summer and autumn baseflow has major consequences for the platypus distribution and reproductive success, decreasing their habitat and their primary food source right at the time when female platypus need abundant nourishment to prepare them for breeding.

“On the other hand, when it rains in urban areas, runoff from hard surfaces like roofs and roads causes erosion, pollution

and loss of habitat. Between these two extremes, the platypus is caught between a rock and a hard place.”

The platypus breeds between August and September and lays two to three eggs around September-October.

Starting next year, households in catchment areas managed by Yarra Ranges Council and Melbourne Water will be offered a smart rainwater tank. Using ‘Tank Talk’ flow control technology developed by South East Water, the smart tank can be remotely controlled to release water to the stormwater network, to manage flows for the platypus population, and help improve broader stream health, while ensuring enough water remains for household use.

“These tanks can be programmed to release water to the stormwater network before rain events - giving the tank capacity to absorb peak flow rates during rain, reducing the risk of flooding – but also release a steady trickle of water to the creek during dry periods, to sustain flows for the platypus,” said Dr David Bergmann from South East Water.

The smart network will also include two large water storages: Belgrave Lake and Monbulk Creek Retarding Basin at Birdsland Reserve.

Men helping each other

By Taylah Eastwell Mum’s have mother’s clubs. Veterans often find themselves getting involved at the RSL down the road. Retirees and craftsmen hang out at the local men’s shed, where long-lasting, trusty friendships (and woodwork pieces) are formed.

But what about the dads, and men that don’t quite fit into the demographic of these social groups?

In steps Mountain Men. Mountain Men is a social support group for men in the Dandenong Ranges focused on engagement and inclusion. The group offers a non-judgmental, safe space for men to participate in a range of social activities that encourage new friendships to blossom.

Co-founder of Mountain Men Inc, Heath Pawley, described the group as “a social group for men, or people that identify as men, to bridge the gap between younger age groups where people have friends from school and older age groups where people may have retired”.

“It’s more of a social group to build community and connections for those between 25-55, but there is no set age. It’s very inclusive, not a toxic masculinity or blokey bloke vibe at all, we are all just there to chat and socialise,” Mr Pawley said.

“One of the things we’ve found through people that come along is that a lot of the guys in that age group that may or may not have kids are feeling isolated. They might have moved away from where their friends live or are just finding it hard to make connections with people,” he said.

Mr Pawley said Mountain Men’s mission and focus is similar to that of a Men’s Sshed in the sense that it’s all about getting guys talking and doing activities.

“It’s about making connections in healthy environments, not just a group of guys going down the pub,” Mr Pawley joked.

“We aren’t a mental health provider but it is a big underlying focus. We do activities to promote positive mental health such as run clubs, soccer in the park, talks - we have done some presentations on food and health and wellbeing so we are taking some of the elements of mental health and addressing the peripheral stuff,” he said.

The group get together for a number of different activities, ranging from a coffee in the park to monthly yarning circles, where a different topic is chosen for each session and an expert speaker presents and allows men to ask any questions. Mr Pawley said the last few yarning circles have been on food and health, financial planning and gardening.

“Our last presentation on work life balance was online, the next one is about garden tool maintenance and safety.

from fitness classes outside keeping numbers down and a few other ways as Covid allows. We are trying to be flexible,” Mr Pawley said.

“It’s also been hard letting men know we are here these days because if you’re not online you don’t get a lot of information. A lot of the men that come along do so after their wife or partner told them they should come along and socialise,” he laughed.

The group is focused on the southern Dandenongs and receives funding from both Cardinia and Yarra Ranges councils.

“We’ve got people that come from Belgrave, Olinda, Mt Evelyn, we are definitely trying to capture the whole Ranges and anyone in the area is welcome to come up. It’s not a postcode or Yarra Ranges only thing, it’s open to everyone, we’ve also had some from Boronia and Ferntree Gully,” he said.

Mr Pawley said Covid-19 lockdowns have given dads the opportunity to take a “more active role in the household with online schooling and working from home”.

“It’s been fantastic for them getting hours back at home rather than commuting. But on the flip side, I recently did a dads class and learnt that some industries have been absolutely berserk and a few people haven’t seen their kids for like six months, except for weekends, because they are in bed when they leave and come home,” he said.

“It’s varied depending on what role they might be in but there’s not much else you can do in lockdown other than go to the park with the kids and I think a lot of dads have found

Friends help Isaac bloom There are few people in life that would go above and beyond to help others in need in the community, let alone on the other side of the world - but the Ralph family are truly special. Ever since Nick, a photographer for World Vision, met a young, passionate Ugandan man named Isaac, he and his family have fundraised tirelessly to ensure Isaac gains an education and achieves his lifelong dreams and what better way than by selling daffodils?

GABRIELLA PAYNE stopped by to learn more about this inspiring story.

Tucked away in the rolling hills of Cockatoo, hidden amongst the towering trees and lush greenery, lies a little roadside flower stall.

While unassuming and humble, the bright yellow daffodils have been catching the eye of many a passer-by in recent weeks, with the little stall selling bunch after bunch.

Behind the daffodils lies a bigger, truly heartwarming story.

For the past few years, Nick and Lisa Ralph, along with their two children Harper and Arabelle, have been tirelessly fundraising in whatever way they can to help a young friend on the other side of the world - Isaac Mukisa, who Nick first met back in 2019.

Having travelled the world working as a photographer for World Vision for over a decade, Nick said he had met many incredible people throughout his life, but when he first met Isaac, he realised there was something special about him.

“So, as part of my job, working for a not-forprofit, we work with the youth and children,” Nick explained.

“So Isaac was actually a part of a story we were working on. So we went to Uganda and we filmed the story, and I thought he seemed like a pretty cool guy - you know, he sang us a song and was always hanging around us - he was clearly really passionate for photography and that kind of thing,” he said.

“And it basically all came down to a moment where I was sitting and speaking with Isaac after filming for a full day in the field, and he’d been helping me all day, you know carrying tripods and cameras and that sort of thing, and always just being right there with us, and I basically said, ‘well why don’t you do this?’ and he said ‘oh, that’s a silly thing to say, it’s impossible for me to do anything like this.”

“And I remember asking, ‘why?’ and he said, ‘well because I don’t have a university degree, and university costs so much money, it’s impossible, I could never afford it,’ - and that kind of annoyed me,” Nick said.

Later that night, still dwelling on their conversation, Nick decided to call his wife Lisa back home in Australia and put a proposition to her - why not do everything they could to help make Isaac’s dreams a reality?

It was an idea that Lisa welcomed wholeheartedly.

“I think a lot of people like to give but they just don’t know how to help people and they don’t have that opportunity,” Lisa said.

“But we’ve just been lucky enough to have this contact with Isaac and his family in Uganda, where we can directly help them and we have direct contact with them and we can see mailcommunity.com.au

where the money is going - and he’s just so grateful,” she said.

Nick remembered telling Isaac that night in Uganda that he and his wife would help fundraise back home so that Isaac could attend university and get a degree, and he said the young man was left speechless by the gesture.

“That night I told him, he was basically flawed,” Nick said.

“He’s had a hard life, he’s experienced trauma and was forced out onto the streets where he lived for a couple of years - but after that rough turn, he basically said ‘enough’s enough’ and signed up as a volunteer with World Vision in Busia, Uganda, which is where we met.”

“So he’s a bit of a success story because he’s a young guy, and he’s able to articulate himself and he’s really turned his life around,” he said.

At just 27 years of age, Isaac has clearly been through a lot in his lifetime, but he’s never let that get him down.

Now, with the helping hands of the Ralph family, he is a proud journalism student at the Uganda Christian University and is well on the path to achieving his dreams, as he hopes to become “a voice for the voiceless”.

Since their first meeting, Nick was able to make it back to Uganda once more and meet up with Isaac before the pandemic hit, where he was able to give him a laptop and care package from Isaac’s new “Aussie family” and hear

how his studies were going.

“As a family, we believe that education is the key to unlocking his future and his opportunities and without education, it’s not possible and without someone to support him, it just wasn’t going to happen,” he said.

“Education there is like gold - if you get educated you can get a job, if you can get a job you can support your family and everyone around you,” Nick said, and being the eldest of seven children, Isaac is hoping that he will lead the way for his younger siblings.

Through the kindness of their hearts and “a lot of hard work”, the Ralphs have managed to support Isaac through his degree since 2019, paying for his board and food on top of the education costs.

Although the Covid pandemic threw a spanner in the works for many of the Ralphs fundraising plans, they’ve managed to persevere, starting an online fundraising campaign that many family and friends have contributed to as well as their more recent idea - the daffodil stand.

“We’d been trying to think of ideas of how we can fundraise when we can’t really do many physical fundraisers at the moment, and so a friend of the family grows daffodils on her farm in the hills, so she offered to sell me the daffodils for $1 a bunch, and we sell them for $2 a bunch and all the profits go to Isaac,” Lisa explained.

“People have been chipping in a little bit of extra money each day, because they’ve seen that the money is going to a good cause, so we’ve had a few extra donations and the community is really getting behind it as well, which is great to see.”

Lisa and Nick said that Isaac was constantly sending them updates on his studies and how grateful he was to be working towards his dreams - and the couple have set up a Facebook page for others to follow his journey as well.

“He’s experienced a lot of hardship in his life and he really wants to tell people’s stories, particularly why people become homeless - he thinks everyone has a story to share,” Lisa said.

“That’s what he wants to do - finish his degree and go back to his little community and help them and his family, so it’s been really exciting following him and seeing his journey” she said.

The Ralphs will be selling daffodils for Isaac all season long, but if you can’t make it to Cockatoo, a Facebook fundraiser has been set up to help Isaac complete his final years of study.

A pain in the back Low back pain continues to be one of the leading causes of disability and burden on healthcare resources worldwide.

It is amongst the top three causes of healthcare costs in the USA and accounts for one in six visits to emergency departments in Australia, despite most cases being deemed as nonserious.

The new reality of the potential for Covid patients to overwhelm our hospitals in a short space of time has highlighted existing inefficiencies that need to change drastically.

Even with better knowledge around best practice for low back pain treatment over the last decade, low value care such as imaging (X Rays and CT scans), inpatient admission and the use of opioids continues to be the main treatment options for people once they reach hospital.

The treatment given will vary considerably by what time of day a patient arrives, their age or how they arrived. Admission to an inpatient ward is twice as likely if a patient arrives during working hours, and three times as likely if they arrive by ambulance and unnecessary imaging is twice as likely to be given to patients aged over 65 years.

Form & Practice, Olinda Non-serious back pain, formerly known as non-specific back pain, accounts for 95 per cent of back pain episodes. Some of these episodes may involve stress or inflammation to structures such as spinal discs, joints, ligaments and muscles.

Pressure on nerves that is due to an inflammatory reaction, rather than a mechanical impingement, also comes under this category and often results in referred, or radicular, pain.

Serious back pain is rare. This includes damage to nerves or the spinal cord that may not be reversible unless treated urgently, as well as tumours and fractures. For non-serious back pain, heavy painkillers such as opioids

(codeine, endone etc) have no greater effect than over the counter anti-inflammatories.

Opioid use, imaging and hospital admission are strongly associated with poorer outcomes over the short and long-term. So what is best practice or high value care for low back pain?

The answers are relatively simple: exercise, weight loss, reduced stress and a healthy diet.

Imagine going to hospital and being told that? A large part of the problem lies in our expectations of what treatment should involve and who should administer the treatment. The expectation is often that if you are in pain, a doctor should be able to treat it. The truth is for back pain, it is much easier to prevent in the first place, and the responsibility for that lies with the individual.

As the costs of public health care continue to rise, we all need to take more personal responsibility for our own health if we want to continue to enjoy world-class access to hospital care for serious conditions.

So if you are starting to feel a bit of a niggle in your back, get off the recliner, do some exercise, consume less sugars and alcohol and visit your physiotherapist to get you through when you are sore and keep you moving in between.

A fantastical history of man versus nature Warning: Here’s a 600-page book that’s absolutely unputdownable. Be prepared to have ohso-worth-it sore arms as Andrew McGahan’s The Rich Man’s House keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout the day and late into the night.

Winner of the 2019 Aurealis Award for Best Horror Novel, The Rich Man’s House was McGahan’s eleventh and final novel. The Miles Franklin Award-winning author spent the last weeks of his life finishing the book, before dying of pancreatic cancer.

The result is a haunting piece of speculative fiction featuring The Wheel, an unearthly mountain towering over the freezing Antarctic waters south of Tasmania. Since its discovery in 1642, the 25,000-metre geographical goliath of a mountain has defeated numerous climbers from across the world. It’s quite a thrill to read its masterfully constructed history.

Only one man has ever stood atop the mountain’s apex, known as the Hand of God. Decades later, Walter Richman, now a reclusive billionaire, painstakingly builds a mansion on the highest point of a neighbouring island. Whether the Observatory is Richman’s way to pay tribute to The Wheel as his greatest adversary, or to mock it as a subdued prey, is impossible to know.

PASSION FOR PROSE WITH CHRISTINE SUN But there’s something wrong with the Observatory, as Rita Gausse, daughter of the architect who designed it and subsequently died there, finds out upon her arrival. It is here, cut off from the outside world, that Gausse acutely feels – and fears – the ferocious, omnipresent and forever-patient forces of Mother Nature that she has long been sensitive to.

As the story unfolds, we see why Richman so insists that Rita is there to witness his final showdown against The Wheel. Reaching the story’s ending somehow feels like seeing a tsunami coming – something that is cataclysmic and catastrophic, completely predictable yet ultimately and overwhelmingly terrifying.

The Rich Man’s House is a microcosm of the

history of man vs. nature. To this reviewer, it reads like an author’s fearless attempt to confront death. McGahan was careful to apologise in his Preface in case of any rushed or unfinished writing. Indeed, at least one critic has complained the novel “reads like an earlier draft of a more mature work”.

However, the raw and often brutal emotions detected throughout the pages are perhaps clues that help us comprehend the author’s anger, pain and frustration in the face of an untimely death.

While an artist’s ego may inspire them to triumph over death through art, a true artist would antagonise, amend and even alleviate the curious need of humans to dominate.

It is in between these two pursuits that conflicts arise and are explicitly conveyed in McGahan’s last writing. In the same way that The Wheel is so ingrained in the world of the novel that it feels real, we are reminded that no amount of scientific and technological advancement can replace or reconstruct a meaningful life.

A true page-turner, The Rich Man’s House calls for our respect, for ourselves, each other and the ancient, natural world.

Infinite has finite appeal

Infinite Starring Mark Wahlberg, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Sophie Cookson Rated M Infinite is a flat, unimaginative sci-fi action movie that clearly copied a better movie’s homework.

Evan (Mark Wahlberg), a troubled man with certain innate talents, joins a society of reincarnated individuals who can recall their past lives, and must regain his own memories to avert the end of the world.

Wahlberg is serviceable but unmemorable, delivering yet another wisecracking tough guy performance. The dialogue is contrived and drowning in dry spoken exposition. Evan’s vague quest to regain his memories is visually confusing, and builds to a very silly twist.

Infinite is extremely derivative of The Matrix, down to character archetypes and plot beats, with Bathurst’s (a charismatic but underwritten Chiwetel Ejiofor) desire to break the cycle of reincarnation feeling a little too similar to Agent Smith’s desire to leave the Matrix.

Unlike The Matrix, Infinite’s action is unsatisfying. There are only two decent but all-too-short fight scenes, and most of the action sequences lack a clear sense of direction and somehow look perilous but feel easy.

The film’s own ideas sabotage its suspense: if the main characters can reincarnate, and the villains’ Dethroner weapon disables reincarnation but stores its victims’ souls on a chip, then no-one is really in any tangible danger.

Moreover, recontextualising schizophrenia as a superpower feels patronising toward real people with schizophrenia.

Poorly-written and generic, Infinite holds finite – and very limited – appeal, and is available on iTunes.

Call of the wildlife carers

By Gabriella Payne Many native animals call Cardinia’s hills region home and one special shelter is working hard to protect and preserve as much of our amazing wildlife as they can – but now they need a little helping hand.

For over 20 years now, Helen McCoy has been running the Gembrook Wildlife Shelter and although she has an amazing small team of dedicated volunteers - she’s always on the lookout for more, particularly now as work is ramping up.

“It’s frantic at the moment, we’ve just got a lot of babies here,” Ms McCoy said.

“We’ve got quite a few volunteers, but we have a lot of animals in at the moment, so some more volunteers would be absolutely great!”

“We’ve got lots of kangaroo joeys, wallabies and wombats – and they are the ones taking the time,” she explained.

Having worked in wildlife rescue for more than 30 years, Ms McCoy is highly experienced and is willing to train people who have never cared for native animals before, as long as they are “reliable” and willing to learn.

“We’re just after people who are able to be reliable and regular and have a bit of animal knowledge - you can’t just have somebody who thinks they are cute little things,” Ms McCoy said, as the two main duties she needs help with are cleaning and feeding - which involve getting your hands dirty.

Ms McCoy said that it was incredibly rewarding helping injured or orphaned wildlife, and as the shelter is located on an acreage that backs onto the Bunyip State Park, volunteers had the chance to help release wildlife when they no longer needed help.

“I get given a lot of animals from suburban shelters, so we get them at two or three kilograms and can release them afterwards, so

“I take them from just starting to fur from going into adulthood and nearing release.”

Ms McCoy said that even if people wanted to volunteer for just a few hours it would be a great help, and she is predominantly looking for people to assist in the mornings, as that was always the busiest time.

“I have a dedicated animal room downstairs, so we clean that every day and make sure they are in clean pouches and so forth,” she said.

“And the feeding is all bottle feeding, so they’ll generally stand and take a bottle or they can be fed on your knees - but I’ll be there to teach [the new volunteers] anyway.”

Ms McCoy said she was incredibly appreciative of all the work her “wonderful” volunteers put in each week, and said that she simply couldn’t do it without them.

Games inspire local clubs

By Jed Lanyon Yarra Ranges Athletics is seeing a surge in new members following the Olympics, where track and field events were highlighted to a worldwide audience.

Yarra Ranges Athletics hosted after-school events for children to try out the sporting events they had just witnessed their Olympic heroes take part in.

Club president Max Savill-Bentley said it was “fantastic” to see so many new families bring their kids along to take part in the sport.

“I went down there and I was blown away by how many people there were. I thought, hang on, this isn’t a Saturday morning or a cross country event, it’s a random Monday afternoon with one coach. It was really impressive.”

Mr Savill-Bentley said the club was “lucky” to host four days of their after-school event, which was eventually cancelled following the latest lockdown. The event was an opportunity for the club to ride the wave of momentum provided by the Tokyo Olympics.

“Having recently seen the stats from other athletics clubs around the area from Athletics Victoria, you’re looking at least a 50 plus increase in members per centre and a lot of places will be seeing a 25 per cent increase, which does slowly taper off over the next few years,” Mr Savill-Bentley said.

Yarra Ranges Athletics coach Kate Downward said: “Track and field athletics is a sport that remains under the radar most of the time being overshadowed by sports that have airplay, are constantly on TV, are well funded and recognised across the community.

“Yet in the years where the Olympics or Commonwealth Games or even the world championships are on to some extent, when it hits the screens there’s certainly a renewed understanding and awakening to what a great sport it is and what a diverse sport it can be in the jumping, the running and the throwing.

“It’s a sport for all abilities and ages, no matter what background you come from or how much money you have. You only need a pair of shoes to join in.

Yarra Ranges Athletics saw a boost in participation following the Olympics coverage.

“Here at Yarra Ranges Athletics we were super stoked to see the Aussies do so well. We have little athletics all the way to the elites and we have them locally. We know how hard it is to reach that pinnacle, so we’re super proud to see our Australian track and field team do so well.”

Mr Savill-Bentley said the club’s attention will turn to motivating young athletes to strive to represent their country at the 2032 Brisbane Olympics.

“For our kids in the under 6, under 7, under 8 groups, in 11 years time when we have the Brisbane Olympics it’ll be their big chance to get in on the action. It’s sort of a time for us as an athletics club to look at the current juniors and how we are going to make sure kids love athletics enough to want to go to the Olympics.

Mr Savill-Bentley said the approach for Yarra Ranges Athletics was to motivate little ath-

letics members to achieve their own personal goals.

“We’re very much a personal best focused club.”

While metropolitan Melbourne remains in lockdown, Yarra Ranges Athletics is on the lookout for new members and registrations for the 20201-2022 season opens soon.

Lockdown grants for sport Victorian sporting and recreation clubs forced to cancel or postpone events due to the current lockdown will be able to apply for cash grants to defray costs.

Minister for Community Sport Ros Spence announced that the application deadline for the State Government’s Sporting Club Grants Program has been extended to 27 August.

The current round of the program provides $2000 grants for eligible clubs and community organisations impacted by the July lockdown or the current lockdown.

Minister for Community Sport Ros Spence said, “This is a vital lifeline for our sports clubs hit hardest by the effects of the latest restrictions, that’s why we’re getting on with extending this support.

The grants are available to Victorian sport and active recreation organisations for irrecoverable costs due to cancelled events including cancellation fees for facilities and payments to coaches and officials, as well as the loss of perishable goods and booking fees.

The Sporting Club Grants Program is part of the Government’s commitment to make sport more accessible and inclusive, stimulate local economies, build sustainable sport and recreation and volunteer opportunities, and increase local participation.
