JobSeeker concern

By Gabriella Payne With coronavirus supplements set to end next month, the Federal Government announced a permanent increase to the JobSeeker payment on Tuesday morning, which will see unemployed Australians receive a rise of $50 per fortnight - a decision that has left many advocates outraged, stating this would “barely” make a difference.

The permanent increase, announced on the morning of Tuesday 23 February, means that people receiving the JobSeeker payment will receive an extra $25 a week, an equivalent of about $3.50 per day, an amount which many charities have condemned.

Claire Victory, the National President of the St Vincent de Paul Society in Australia said that the organisation were “dumbfounded” by the government’s failure to provide unemployed people with enough support to get them by.

“Twenty-five dollars a week is an inadequate response to the poverty experienced

by the people forced to survive on unemployment benefits. It’s an affront to human dignity,” Ms Victory said.

“Twenty-five dollars a day would have been closer to the mark and would have brought income support in line with other pensions.

The rhetoric that the best form of income support is a job is unpalatable, especially when there remain nine applicants looking for a job or increased hours for every job advertised,” she said.

Ms Victory said that while organisations like Vinnies were there to help people who were finding it hard to “make ends meet”, it was “very poor policy” for the government to leave unemployed Australians without enough money to get by when they needed it the most.

People currently getting the JobSeeker benefit are receiving $715 per fortnight, but with the Covid supplement set to stop in March, that amount will drop down to $615.70 a fortnight.

eral La Trobe MP Jason Wood for comment on the announced increase, but received no response.

Lieutenant Colonel Lyn Edge from the Salvation Army held similar views to Ms Victory, stating that the organisation had been left disappointed by the announcement.

“We had some hope when the Treasurer said that he wanted people to be able to live with dignity but frankly, $25 a week will not achieve that,” Lt Col Edge said.

“Obviously, any increase at all is a step in the right direction, but this announcement still leaves us in a situation where Australians are trapped in poverty.”

Star News also reached out to local unemployment services including WISE Employment and APM, but both organisations declined to comment.

Other potential welfare reforms are being discussed by the Federal Government and advocates will continue the fight for a larger increase to the benefit over the coming weeks.

Cranbourne leads Covid jab rollout in South East Aged care workers and residents in Cranbourne, Cranbourne East, Junction Village, Dandenong and Dandenong North will be among the first to receive Covid-19 vaccines.

More than 240 aged and disability care homes in 190 Australian towns and suburbs will be the first to get the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine from Monday 22 February.

Frontline healthcare workers and quarantine and border workers will also be among the first vaccinated at Pfizer hubs, Federal Health and Aged Care Minister Greg Hunt said.

The hubs including one at Monash Medical Centre, Clayton will be run by the states.

A Commonwealth-led “vaccination taskforce” would deliver the vaccinations to aged care and disability care homes.

Mr Hunt said a staged approach to the rollout ensured those who needed protection most were first.

“The vaccination program will save and protect lives. Both of our vaccines will prevent serious illness. That is our primary goal.”

The AstraZeneca/Oxford vaccine, recently approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration, will be rolled out from early March, Mr Hunt said.

The non-compulsory vaccines will be offered free of charge.

Maddison was stolen during a burglary in Cranbourne North.

A man has tragically died after he was hit by a car in Cranbourne on Tuesday night, 16 February.

Police and emergency services were called to Thompsons Road about 8.45pm after reports that a car and a pedestrian had collided. The male pedestrian sustained critical injuries and died at the scene. The driver of the car stopped at the scene and is assisting police with their inquiries. The exact circumstances surrounding the collision are yet to be determined, however Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives are investigating.

The death brings the total number of lives lost on the road in 2021 to 26, as of Wednesday morning, 17 February.

Police are urging anyone who may have seen a pedestrian acting strangely or walking in the vicinity of the South Gippsland Highway and Thompsons Road to come forward. Any witnesses to the crash, or anyone with dashcam footage should also contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Hunt for the man with the dragon tattoo An electric bike robbery that occurred in Cranbourne in broad daylight recently has left police searching for the thief, who has been described as a man with a dragon tattoo.

At approximately 12.20pm on Thursday 11 February, the offender allegedly approached the victim, who was riding through a park at the intersection of Ballarto Road and Botanic Drive with their Trek Powerfly 5 e-bike. The offender then allegedly pushed the victim to the ground before stealing the $4,900 e-bike and riding off.

A detailed description of the offender was provided to police and an image has been released to the public in the hopes of catching the culprit. The thief is described as being a Caucasian male, aged approximately in his mid 20’s with short dark hair and is about 5”5 or 165 cm in height. He was wearing a black T-shirt at the time of the incident and has an easily distinguishable dragon tattoo on his left forearm.

Police would like to speak with the man pictured below, as they believe he may be able to assist them in their investigation.

Search for stolen Staffy A four-month-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier named Maddison has been stolen from her family’s Cranbourne North home.

Police believe the pup was stolen during a burglary at her Hazelwood Avenue home on Thursday 11 February, between 10.45am and 11.30am. Detectives are appealing for anyone who may have any information that could assist in locating Maddison.

Pedestrian killed in Cranbourne

Police are seeking public assistance.

A 24-year-old man has been charged with trafficking a drug of dependence, driving whilst under the influence of drugs, possession of controlled weapons and other driving offences after crashing into a roadside barrier in Clyde.

Just after midnight on Sunday morning, 21 February, members from the Dandenong Frontline Tactical unit were patrolling BerwickCranbourne Road when they noticed a vehicle lose control and crash into a roadside barrier.

After going to assist the driver, police suspected the Cranbourne man was drug affected and his collision was due to him driving under the influence of drugs. A search of the vehicle was conducted, and police allegedly located a large quantity of illicit drugs, believed to be methamphetamine and GHB. The man was taken to hospital for his injuries under police guard. He was later taken to the Dandenong police station where he was charged and remanded in custody to attend the Magistrates Court.

Finger lost in bitter spat

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Pakenham East woman who bit off the fingertip of a friend during a drunken fight at a farmhouse barbecue has been given a threeyear good behaviour bond.

Mansis Bandi, now 50, acted in “excessive self defence” during the violent exchange of punches and scratches at a farmhouse at Kelly Road, Cranbourne South, in the early hours of Sunday 15 October 2017.

The victim’s bitten ring finger was later amputated.

Both intoxicated at the time, the victim was regarded as the initial aggressor who angrily approached Bandi seated in a car.

Then sparked a “dynamic” “fluid” and “physical” tussle on the ground with “little opportunity for calm thought”, Judge George Georgiou said in sentencing on 24 February When Bandi bit down on the victim’s fingers, the victim screamed and called her to stop.

Bandi bit down hard and pulled on the ring finger, causing the victim “immense pain”. The tip of the finger was bitten off.

Bandi and her partner then drove home.

Defence lawyer Ashley Halphen had argued the victim was atop of Bandi, who had “nowhere to go” and so had to bite the victim.

Judge Georgiou was unable to find whether the victim was on top of Bandi at the time of the bite.

He noted Bandi hadn’t gone looking for a fight nor provoked the incident. Her self-defence however “overstepped the mark”.

“You believed your conduct was necessary in self defence but it was not a reasonable response in the circumstances as you perceived them.”

That same day, Bandi reported to Cranbourne police that she was a victim of an assault. Her partner claimed that he disarmed

Bandi’s index finger was also bitten and became infected. She required several days in

hospital. She also suffered bruises and scratches to her face, back and forearm.

The pair were lifelong friends, growing up in Papua New Guinea. The then-40-year-old

victim regarded Bandi as a “sister”.

The relationship “soured” however when the victim disapproved Bandi’s new male partner.

After several legal delays, Bandi pleaded guilty in the Victorian County Court to recklessly causing serious injury.

Judge Georgiou noted Bandi’s remorse, “early” guilty plea and her “very good” rehabilitation prospects.

Bandi was previously convicted for a “not especially serious” assault in 2015 in which she punched a woman’s face from behind.

She had not offended since the most recent charge.

He noted Bandi’s long-term community contribution, leading a Wantok group that supported Papua New Guinean students and medical arrivals in Australia.

She was working as a packer in Maffra, to support her four children and a grandchild that she helps care for.

The trial’s delays had a punitive effect on Bandi, especially while she endured serious illness, Judge Georgiou noted.

A previous jury had been unable to agree on a verdict on more serious charges, and another trial aborted due to Covid-19.

Prosecutors sought a sentence of at least a community corrections order, while Bandi’s lawyer submitted for an adjourned undertaking or a fine.

Judge Georgiou said most offenders received jail or a CCO for the serious offence. But he weighed up the “unusual circumstances” and Bandi’s “low moral culpability”.

“In all the circumstances, I find this to be an exceptional case warranting the penalty proposed.”

Bandi was convicted and placed on a threeyear adjourned undertaking.

It included a good behaviour bond and a $300 donation to a registered charity.

Cat-astrophe avoided

By Mitchell Clarke A cat trapped in a car engine has eight lives remaining after he was freed by heroic SES volunteers.

The meows of the vocal moggy were heard from outside the Lakeside Coin Laundromat in Pakenham on Friday 12 February, but people passing by couldn’t exactly put their finger on where the cries were coming from.

Lakeside resident, Jenny, was waiting for her laundry to finish when she went to investigate.

“I was sitting there and I could this ‘meow meow’ but I couldn’t see a cat or anything, I thought I was going crazy,” she laughed.

“I went back and had my coffee and these girls came out and said they could hear it too.

Someone went up to a parked car and realised the cat was actually in the car.”

Jenny said she immediately called Triple Zero, but claims officers on the other line thought she was a “nutter”.

“They said they got those types of calls all of the time and I said I promise I’m not crazy,” she laughed.

“I just felt so sorry for the poor thing. I thought if it stayed there all day it would probably suffocate and die.”

Eventually volunteers from the SES Pakenham Unit came to the crying cat’s aid and got to work, retrieving the kitty in about 10 minutes.

The friendly feline was picked up by a local rescue who will return him to his rightful owner.

No offence in social stir

By Danielle Kutchel The RSPCA has warned the community to be careful not to read too much into social media claims of animal cruelty, after photos of a tethered Lynbrook dog went viral.

The photos first surfaced some months ago and appeared to show a dog without access to water or shelter, tied with a chain outside a property.

They attracted hundreds of comments from community members and animal activists alike, many of whom were concerned at the German Shepherd’s apparent living conditions and the fact that he appeared to be chained up on a patch of concrete.

However, Lisa Calleja, team leader of major investigations at the RSPCA, said it had been confirmed that the dog had access to an adequate water source and that his tethering was not an offence.

There was further criticism of the dog’s owners for apparently leaving the animal chained during a run of hot days - however Ms Calleja said on these days the owners had taken the dog inside into the air conditioned house. “...the dog’s owners ... confirmed the dog [had] been inside all day in the air-conditioning. They also provided visual evidence that verified this,” she said.

“There is no welfare risk to this animal and no breaches of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act (POCTAA) have been identified.

When visited by Star News Group, the dog’s owner, who wished to remain anonymous out of fear for the safety of his property and family, confirmed that the dog was tethered to stop him escaping as the property was not fenced at the time.

He said he and his family had been shocked by the level of vitriol directed towards them in person and on social media.

His address was posted in several places on social media sites, and “vigilantes” trespassed multiple times, smashing car windows and attempting to take the dog.

The owner said he had seen social media comments in which people said he “deserved a bullet”.

He and his family have taken out several restraining orders against trespassers.

“We’re paranoid, we’ve been intimidated.

It’s stressful,” he said.

He added that while he respected people’s right to an opinion, the dog, named Taro, was safe and well looked after and authorities had handled the complaints from the community.

The City of Casey’s manager safer communities, Caroline Bell, said the council was first contacted by a resident concerned about the

dog’s welfare in early December, and again in January.

“The concerns raised were taken seriously and investigated by our Local Laws officers in order to identify if there were any breaches of the Domestic Animals Act, 1994 or the Casey Community Local Law 2018 in regard to the keeping of a dog, and of any potential risks to the community,” she said.

The council suggested that the property owner “erect a suitable fence” to contain the dog.

The fence has since been completed and the owner assured Star News Group that Taro will no longer be tethered now that he has a contained backyard of his own.

Mentors invited to apply The Lab Network, Australia’s world-first network of technology clubs for young people with Autism and Asperger’s Syndrome, is calling on IT, computing and gaming professionals to help meet a growing need for tech-savvy mentors in its Melbourne and Victorian Labs.

Due to a growing number of enrolments and new Labs opening in metropolitan and regional areas, The Lab Network needs more people willing to share their professional passion and vocational skills in areas such as coding, social gaming, digital design, video production and more.

Applicants receive online and on-the-job training with ongoing support to become paid mentors at community-based Labs, which offer weekly after-school and weekend sessions for neurodiverse young people aged 10 - 20 who are often socially isolated but possess keen interests and emerging skills.

Mentors are also sought for The Lab Online, which provides video-based mentoring for acutely isolated young people living in regional and rural Australia as well as various skilland interest-based groups nationwide.

Mentors work with groups of up to 20 young people aged 10 - 18 in an inclusive, mediated environment where participants can safely meet, play games, have fun and learn new skills with peers who share interests in computer technologies, IT and gaming.

The Lab started in Melbourne’s west in 2010 and has grown into a national network which is expected to exceed 40 local Labs this year.

A growing evidence base supports the effectiveness of the Lab’s service in helping participants to form friendship networks and develop both their social and technical (vocational) skills.

Digital designer and gaming enthusiast, Curtis Szczygielski, has been a mentor and trainer in Melbourne Labs for seven years and a Lab Online mentor since March last year when Covid-19 forced the closure of all physical Labs.

“Mentors make sure participants feel safe to be themselves and have fun with friends and technology and play games, while we help

them work on their social and technical skills,” Mr Szczygielski said.

“I absolutely love it. We have a lot of fun.

It’s a weekly commitment, the kids rely on you being there and you have to show you are into what they’re into but it’s a rewarding experience. I recommend to anyone who has skills to share and the time.”

Rebecca Perkins, founder of special needs support service My Special Child and cofounder of Cranbourne-based the National PEKE Centre, said the opportunities presented

by The Lab Network are “fantastic and vital for young autistic people”.

“There are sadly not enough opportunities

for many of our young people and to see opportunities like this being presented is a really important step in the right direction,” she explained.

“Autistic individuals have many fantastic abilities and qualities and it’s about time the world embraced this and allowed them to shine. Now all we need is more of these opportunities so that no neurodivergent individual goes without opportunity or without being able to excel and flourish.”

By Mitchell Clarke Almost one year since alleged corruption was exposed within the City of Casey, a former councillor is still fighting to clear his name.

Former Springfield Ward councillor Rex Flannery, who resigned as deputy mayor just days before the State Government sensationally sacked the entire council in February 2020, says the events of the past 12 months are still “eating” him up.

He has now officially requested that his name is removed from both a councillor honour board in the customer service centre and a wall plaque in Bunjil Place.

“I have never had any involvement into this alleged corruption scandal and therefore I do not wish to have my name associated with past or former councillors who may have brought our City of Casey into disrepute,” he told Star News.

“People look at your name and they see that you’re from Casey Council and immediately they put you in that same mould, which couldn’t be further than the truth.

“It’s just horrible to have been a councillor in that term. It gives you a sickening feeling in your gut and now I have to live with that.“ Mr Flannery argues his name should never have been placed on the plaque celebrating the $126 million Bunjil development because at the time he didn’t support the project.

“I guess I’ve eaten a little bit of humble pie with Bunjil Place. I’ve been able to see the value that place brings to the community but at the time I was against the development and I wasn’t once consulted (about having my name included),” he said.

He also claims former ex-ward partner, Sam Aziz, stated to him that he “wished he never had my name added to the plaque”.

“That was the only time I agreed with him,” Mr Flannery said.

While Mr Flannery hasn’t accused any former councillor of committing wrongdoing, he said anyone found guilty from the IBAC hearing should immediately have their honours stripped.

Since his resignation, Mr Flannery has been working in an operating theatre at a local hospital. He said he has every intention to run for council again in 2024.

Bridge over troubled road In a single week of heavy lifting, 39 massive concrete beams have been hoisted into place at two level-crossing removal sites in Dandenong South.

At South Gippsland Highway, crews installed 17 concrete beams to form a road bridge over the rail line in one weekend.

Each of the Victorian-built pre-cast beams weighed more than 30 tonnes.

Works are also continuing to upgrade the intersection at Princes Highway.

The level crossing is expected to be removed by 2022.

At the second site at Greens Road, a rail bridge is being built across the road.

More than 22 beams were lifted in place over seven days from 16 February.

Greens Road is one of the last four level crossings being removed on the Cranbourne line. Eight kilometres of track is also being duplicated.

The Greens Road level crossing is expected to be gone by 2023.

The State Government’s $15 billion upgrade of the Cranbourne and Pakenham rail lines is expected to boost peak-time passenger capacity by 45 per cent.

The level crossing removals are hoped to relieve congestion for about 54,000 vehicles a day, including freight trucks in the manufacturing hub.

Walk for the cord appeal

By Danielle Kutchel Members of the Inner Wheel Club of Narre Warren are limbering up to walk for a good cause this week, raising funds to support cord blood research.

Around 30 walkers have registered to take part in the ‘Sean’s Two for Ten’ walkathon at Cranbourne Botanic Gardens on Friday 26 February, contributing much-need funds to a promising area of medical research.

The walkathon is part of Inner Wheel Australia’s ongoing national project.

Walkers are asked to walk 2km and donate $10 to the cause, which has saved many children’s lives over the years - including that of Sean, the ambassador for Two for Ten. When Sean was just one-year-old, he was diagnosed with a rare genetic disease called Severe Combined Immunodeficiency - that is, he was born without an immune system.

After a worldwide search for a donor, Sean was injected with 30mL of cord blood that saved his life.

He’s now a healthy and thriving nine-yearold, thanks to that fateful donation.

Inner Wheel has been supporting cord blood research as its national project for 10 years and over that time has raised $3 million.

Each year at the Inner Wheel National Con-

ference, the organisation awards grants to research teams working in the area.

Linda Wallace, vice president of the Inner Wheel Club of Narre Warren, said there is currently ongoing research into using stem cells to treat childhood cancers, cerebral palsy and, more recently, severe Covid.

The Cranbourne Botanic Gardens was chosen as the perfect setting for their walkathon as it offers an easy and accessible scenic walk for all ages, and those who are unable to walk around the garden are able to take the garden tour bus instead.

Walkers will wear red t-shirts and red caps in support of the cause.

Donations are accepted even if you are unable to participate in the walk, and can be made via the Inner Wheel Australia website.

Principal Page honoured

By Gabriella Payne Good deeds rarely go unnoticed and for one upstanding member of the community, Roger Page, the founding principal of Berwick’s Nossal High School, a surprise award from the Berwick Rotary Club caught him off guard as he was recognised for his immense contribution to the wider community.

Mr Page, a beloved leader at the school, was awarded the Paul Harris Fellow on Friday 29 January at the first assembly of the year; a surprise ceremony which left him “honoured and astounded”.

“I’m very, very flattered and humbled and feel a little bit undeserving because the rotary club has done so much for the school over the years,” Mr Page said.

“It’s been a wonderful partnership we’ve had with them and they’ve been a fantastic assistance to the school, so I feel like we should be giving them awards rather than them giving me awards!”

Although Mr Page may feel undeserving, the Berwick rotary club and the school community beg to differ.

Since the school’s inception in 2009, Mr Page has been leading the way for Nossal’s staff and students, inspiring many along the way and instilling the importance in giving back to the community.

Popular with both students, staff and the wider community, Mr Page’s generous and good-willed spirit has shone through over the years, one of the reasons why he was chosen as the Paul Harris Fellow recipient for 2020.

Isobel Caulfield, the past president of the Berwick Rotary Club who awarded Mr Page with the fellowship, said that he had gone above and beyond his role as principal and had achieved many great accomplishments over the years.

“As founding principal, Roger has built the school culture around pioneering practices with teachers who push the educational boundaries,” Ms Caulfield said.

“The encouragement for the development of not just good student results, but students who are leaders and are community focused, that’s something that rotary values dearly.”

Ms Caulfield said that Mr Page had “achieved more than could be said” in a speech and noted that his leadership skills were a quality many looked up to him for, particularly his students.

The surprise ceremony had been a long time in the making due to the Covid lockdowns and Ms Caulfield said that although the presentation had been delayed, it was fantastic to honour Mr Page in front of his staff, students and the entire school community at the assembly.

“Roger is very community minded and pos-

sesses all the qualities of a Paul Harris Fellow recipient in his commitment to service above self,” she said.

Paul Harris, the namesake of this award, was one of the founding members of the rotary club, who started the organisation over 100 years ago in Chicago.

The fellowship presentations began in his honour in 1957, rewarding people for their exemplary work in the community, helping those in need, as well as those who made substantial donations to the Rotary Foundation.

Ms Caulfield said that Mr Page was an incredibly deserving award winner with a long career in teaching and helping others, even before his 12 years at Nossal began.

Over the years, the relationship between Nossal High School and the Berwick Rotary Club has flourished, particularly with Mr Page, through a number of events such as BBQs and mock job interviews for students.

“While doing the mock interviews, I ask students, what is your proudest achievement?”

Ms Caulfield said.

“The majority of them say getting into Nossal, and that is a testament to Roger Page.”

Mr Page said he “had no idea” what was happening when Ms Caulfield took to the stage, and it wasn’t until the last moment that he realised the ceremony was for him.

“Even when they called me up to present it to me, I thought I was hopping up to help them present it to some worthy recipient - I just wasn’t aware that it was going to be to me,” he said.

A truly gracious winner, Mr Page said he was grateful for the fantastic relationship Nossal had developed with the Berwick Rotary Club, particularly as a select entry school with students from far and wide.

“They are a fantastic community organisation, I have to say, and particularly for Nossal, because lots of our kids come from all over so we’re not necessarily a local neighbourhood school,” Mr Page said.

“We have students who come from all over the place, so this gives us a very strong link to the community, so it’s been fantastic.”

Mr Page believes that the rotary club members act as important role models for Nossal’s students, who learn the value of community service from the number of events held together throughout the school year.

“We’ll have a team of rotary club people cooking up thousands of snags and interacting with the kids at school BBQs, so it’s a really good community feel and it gives the students a very strong impression of the value of community service and putting back in, which is a mantra we talk to them about,” he said.

Mr Page added that students have “a responsibility to be positive contributors to the community” just like anyone, and by working with the rotary club, the kids had the opportunity to learn from the best.

“I’m very thankful and humbled by the award, but I’m more thankful for the fact that the rotary club is willing to be involved in the community, particularly willing to be involved and assist us as a school. So the partnership will continue and I look forward to working with them long into the future.”

Momentum ‘builds’ on new school’s construction A builder has been appointed for a new primary and secondary school in Clyde North.

On Tuesday 23 February, Bass MP Jordan Crugnale announced that the State Government had appointed J Hutchinson Pty Ltd (trading as Hutchinson Builders) to build a primary school on Elliston Avenue and a secondary college on Woodfield Avenue.

The two schools are referred to with interim names ‘Clyde North Station Primary and Clyde North Station Secondary’ and are part of the State Government’s commitment to open 100 new schools by 2026.

Students and staff at Clyde North Station Primary School will have access to facilities including an administration and resource intensive learning building, two learning neighbourhood buildings, a performing arts and physical education building, sports field, multipurpose hard courts, playgrounds and car parks. Every new Victorian primary school being built from 2021 will also have a kindergarten on-site or next door.

Call for citizen scientists

By Gabriella Payne Community members across Victoria are being encouraged to take part in a new CFA initiative, becoming ‘citizen scientists’, an important role that could help prevent devastating grassfires from now into the future.

As part of a new online module, Victorian CFA volunteers will be able to read and learn about grassland curing (the rate that grass dries out) and then enter their own observations of grassland in their area, providing the CFA with vital information about the state’s fire risk.

After last year’s horrific bushfire season, this new course comes at a great time, offering a step forward in future grassfire prevention tactics and makes use of many willing and capable volunteers around the state.

Significant rainfall last year fuelled exceptional grass growth across Victoria, resulting in a high risk of grassfires this season - something the CFA are hoping to prevent with this new online module.

Longtime CFA volunteer John Jackson has been involved with the grassland curing program for nearly ten years and said that the new course and its updated training provided fantastic resources for both new and existing volunteers.

“I’ve gone through the new course and it’s excellent,” Mr Jackson said.

“It teaches you what you need to become an observer.”

The course includes a simple guide, where volunteers can complete some training before entering information that the CFA will then use for their fire analysis.

Mr Jackson explained the process, stating that it was easy for anyone to use.

“You walk out to a point that you’ve set, have a look at the grass, then use some helpful tools to work out the curing rate,” he said.

Longtime CFA volunteer John Jackson has been involved with Victoria’s grassland curing program for nearly ten years.

Danielle Wright, a remote sensing analyst at the CFA said that these ground observations, like the ones Mr Jackson took, were combined with satellite imagery to produce a map of Victoria, which showed how dry the grass across the state was at any given time.

“Green grass is 0 percent cured, while grass that is totally dried out is 100 percent cured, and those numbers can help calculate the grassland fire danger index,” Ms Wright said.

“It’s very important for identifying fire danger ratings, and feeds into fire behaviour modelling.”

While the satellite technology on its own is a fantastic help, Ms Wright said that the work

of volunteer observers is “crucial” as the satellite could sometimes overestimate or underestimate curing.

“A paddock might have tall, dry grass but after some heavy rainfall, there could be green shoots coming through which wouldn’t affect fire behaviour, but would still be picked up by the satellite,” she said.

Grassland curing isn’t a new fire prevention strategy, having been conducted in Victoria by the CFA over the last few decades - but it’s hoped that this new module will make it more accessible for greater numbers of people to get involved.

said that she encouraged new volunteer observers to give grassland curing a go.

“We have about 125 active observers at the moment, and while a lot of people who do it are CFA members, it’s open to anyone from the public,” Ms Gardner said.

“People can actually do the course for their own awareness but if you’d like to sign up as an observer at the end, we’ll send a more detailed booklet to support you.”

A new direction scheduled for South East commuters

By Danielle Kutchel The State Government has rolled out a new train timetable for Cranbourne and Pakenham line users.

Touted as “the biggest timetable change since the opening of the City Loop”, it sees additional services added across the network, as commuters begin returning to the office.

But it’s not just the return to work that commuters will need to adjust to.

Changes to the timetable, which were rolled out on Sunday 31 January, mean that Cranbourne and Pakenham line trains will run in one direction through the City Loop anti-clockwise, from Parliament to Flinders Street - the entire day.

A government spokesperson said this would give passengers more certainty about their trip as they would know which direction the train is travelling in each time they board.

“The change will facilitate our bigger, more modern trains, and is also delivering more reliable services - with Frankston trains no longer running through the Loop, trains don’t need to queue to enter the tunnel any longer,” the spokesperson said.

They added that travellers on the Pakenham line will also benefit from “more trains, more often”, thanks to “45 new extra services added to the line ... including 10 during the busiest times of the day, giving passengers more options to work flexibly and make physical distancing easier.”

This means that for the Pakenham line, there will be a train to the city every 11 minutes on average between 6am and 10am, and every 12 minutes between 3.30pm and 7.30pm.

But the State Opposition says the changes will leave commuters facing a longer trip to their destination.

In a statement, Shadow Minister for Public Transport David Davis said: “Cranbourne and Pakenham Line commuters will find the direction of their evening City Loop services reversed, leaving many no alternative but to seek to scramble aboard another packed sercranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au

“Andrews has seemingly wasted billions of dollars of taxpayers’ money on transport infrastructure with countless major disruptions to commuters’ travel only to result in metropolitan train services that are now

slower and less direct than ever before for many commuters.

“Add to that the trouble plagued High Capacity Metro Trains project, already years overdue, and the massive budget blowouts with the Melbourne Metro Tunnel project and Labor’s transport infrastructure agenda scores a resounding fail.”

Meanwhile, the State Government has also introduced a new online tool, RideSpace, which will provide real-time information for passengers on metropolitan trains about how

busy their service will be, before they board.

The timetable changes were also accompanied by a 30 percent fare discount for travellers on the metropolitan network outside of peak periods.

The off-peak discount will be in place for the next three months, automatically providing 30 percent off myki fares for passengers touching off between 9.30am and 4pm or after 7pm on weekdays.

By Mitchell Clarke Hoon drivers have been put on notice, with Victoria Police vowing to target reckless driving meets across the south east as part of a pointed operation.

Operation Sumatra, which runs most weekends across Cardinia, Casey and Greater Dandenong, is now in full swing and has resulted in several vehicles being impounded locally, police say.

“Police have no tolerance for behaviours that often lead to injuries including fatalities and senseless damage,” a police spokesperson said in an online statement.

“Expect that if you participate in these events that your vehicle will be scrutinised with any faults resulting in fines and certificates of unroadworthy.”

The stern warning coincides with a police crack down on hoons, which saw 14 people arrested in raids across Melbourne suburbs including Officer, Hampton Park and Dandenong North.

Over two days, officers raided 14 properties as well as seizing 12 cars of a total value of more than $370,000.

The raids were carried out in relation to an alleged illegal hoon meet in St Kilda on 21 January.

The arrested men, aged 18 to 45 years, face “serious criminal” charges carrying up to six years’ jail.

They have been charged with a raft of offences including conduct endangering a person, possess prohibited weapons, possess controlled weapon, possess drug of dependence, possess imitation firearm, attempted criminal

damage and behave in a riotous manner.

Victoria Police Assistant Commissioner Russell Barrett said hoon activity was “dangerous and not simply a bit of harmless fun”.

“We’ve seen these kinds of behaviours result in both death and serious injury,” he said.

A/C Barrett said the penalties for hooning were significant.

“We have no tolerance for illegal hoon activity and remain committed to disrupting and prosecuting anyone involved in this type of dangerous behaviour,” he added.

“We know this type of behaviour is incredibly frustrating for local residents and police are committed to working closely with community groups to address their concerns.”

Environment grants open Bass MP Jordan Crugnale is encouraging community groups from Pakenham to Clyde through to Lang Land down to Inverloch to apply for grants to help protect the environment.

Up to $50,000 is now available for conservation projects or habitat restoration.

Minister for Energy, Environment, and Climate Change Lily D’Ambrosio announced the $7.4 million Community Environment Grants package, which will fund small and large-scale projects dedicated to preserving Victoria’s biodiversity and waterways.

Community and Traditional Owners groups, volunteer organisations, and schools from across the Bass electorate are welcome to apply for grants through three different streams, which include: Community Volunteer Action Grants - to protect and enhance the natural environment, boost volunteer participation, and address biodiversity threats on public and private land.

The Port Phillip Bay Fund - to protect the health of Victoria’s iconic Port Phillip Bay by supporting projects that maintain and improve the health of the Bay’s marine life, habitats, and water quality Aboriginal Community Caring for Country Grants - to support Aboriginal communities and organisations to access and care for Country.

A further two streams will open later this year, including the Victorian Junior Landcare and Biodiversity Grants - opening in March which supports the next generation of Victorians to protect biodiversity through action that improves and restores habitat for native plants and animals.

The Victorian Landcare Grants will open in April to support groups to undertake onground, and natural environment improvement works.

Screening help for Dari community Dari-speaking community members attended BreastScreen Victoria’s mobile screening van to have a free breast screen while it is visiting Cranbourne.

People from Dari-speaking communities screen for breast cancer less often than the general population.

To address potential barriers to screening, BreastScreen Victoria enlisted the help of a Dari-speaking interpreter on Monday 15 February, who was on hand to translate and support clients.

Local community member Rabia Safa had her third breast screen at the Cranbourne van on the day and is encouraging others to take the time to care for themselves by having a breast screen.

“We were able to talk to each other and share our experiences in our language, which made it easier for people,” she said.

“The interpreter helped us fill out the forms and translate any questions, which really helped people having their first breast screen.

“The staff on the van were friendly, helpful and patient and the van is closer to us which makes it easier.”

BreastScreen Victoria’s mobile screening van will be at Cranbourne Library until Friday 5 March.

Member for Cranbourne Pauline Richards spoke of the importance of local breastscreening opportunties: “In Cranboure we have low rates of screening and so being able to give access to a community that is already experiencing some social isolation in a location that is geographically close to them, it really cuts down the barriers to get access to screening.”

In Cranbourne, 45.4 percent of eligible people had a breast screen with BreastScreen Victoria according to 2017-2019 participation to data. This is below the average percentage of people who screened across the state, 53.8 percent.

BreastScreen Victoria CEO Terri Smith said: “Getting a breast screen can be a daunting experience for some people. On Monday, Dari-speaking community members were able to feel culturally safe and supported during their breast-screen experience, with the help of an interpreter to cut through any language barriers.

“We know that people from culturally

and linguistically diverse backgrounds face unique screening barriers, such as language and fear. It is important we can reduce barriers to screening wherever possible, because early detection saves lives.”

BreastScreen Victoria’s mobile screening van travels around the state. It provides an opportunity for communities to have a breast screen in a convenient location with female radiographers, and without the need for a doctor’s referral or Medicare card.

The vans use the highest quality digital radiography machines to ensure that women receive the best service, regardless of their location.

Breast screening is an important health check and is open during Covid-19 restrictions. Clinics have infection control measures in place to protect against the risk of Covid-19, including fitted masks worn by all staff, precautionary health and travel questions, and spaced-out appointments to allow for physical distancing and more cleaning between appointments.

By Danielle Kutchel The ladies of the Pearcedale Cricket Club will paint the town pink this Friday to raise vital funds for breast cancer.

The annual Pink Stumps Night will be held from 6pm on Friday 26 February at the Pearcedale Cricket Ground, with the mums, sisters, wives and girlfriends of players - or any other lady who wishes to be involved - joining together for a friendly T20 game of cricket and a variety of fundraising activities.

A silent auction will see some exciting prizes raffled off, as well as an iPod shuffle with the chance to win $100.

All money raised on the night will go towards the McGrath Foundation.

Sports clubs across Cranbourne are being urged to apply for a share of millions of dollars in funding available to buy equipment and uniforms, boost administrative skills and improve operations.

Cranbourne MP Pauline Richards has announced applications are open for the State Government’s 2020-21 Sporting Club Grants Program.

The grants provide clubs up to $1000 for new uniforms and equipment, up to $5000 for training coaches, officials and volunteers, up to $5000 to improve club operational effectiveness and up to $5000 to help sports get back on their feet after the pandemic.

They will help people of all ages and abilities take part in grassroots sport, no matter where they live and are a great boost for clubs who are looking to get back on track following Covid-19 restrictions.

Support for sports clubs

By Gabriella Payne Sporting clubs across the state will all have the opportunity to improve and transform their facilities as the Victorian Government kick starts the next round of their new initiative, the ‘2021 Local Sports Infrastructure Fund’, aimed at invigorating community sporting activities.

The first round of funding is now open for applications and with $22 million put aside for this project, the Government is encouraging clubs of all shapes and sizes to pitch their proposals and get involved.

As well as aiming to get more women and girls involved with community sports, the Victorian Government hope that this funding will help to improve sporting facilities for local clubs so that they can be modern, safe and inclusive places for one and all, with room to grow into the future.

Harriet Shing, the Member for Eastern Victoria said that grassroots sports clubs were integral parts of towns and communities throughout the state and they deserved to have facilities to match.

“Sport and active recreation is the heart and soul of our local communities.

Unfortunately, many clubs and communities are struggling with run down infrastructure,” Ms Shing said.

“With more and more women and girls signing up to play in Eastern Victoria, we are getting on with upgrading infrastructure so clubs can keep up with soaring demand, while also making them accessible and more inclusive.”

As well as improving wellbeing outcomes, the fund aims to support participation of disadvantaged communities and under-represented groups by developing high-quality, accessible, community sporting facilities and active recreation infrastructure that everyone can enjoy.

Community sporting clubs are eligible to apply for funding as part of the ‘2021 Local Sports Infrastructure Fund’.

Many grant options are available to clubs across five different funding streams which include ‘better indoor stadiums’, ‘female friendly facilities’, ‘community sports lighting’, ‘facilities for active seniors’ and ‘scoreboards and fixed equipment’.

Some clubs have already reaped the rewards of this initiative through the previous round of funding, with $250,000 going towards new athletic track flood lighting at Rieschiecks Reserve in Doncaster East and $500,000 being invested in a brand-new, multi-use, female friendly pavilion at Trafalgar Recreation Precinct.

As well as getting more people, including

senior Victorians, involved in sports, the state government hopes to deliver more multi-sport indoor courts and improve sport field capacities into the future with this funding.

Economic growth will be generated in the process, with hundreds of jobs available for planners, architects, engineers, project managers, builders, carpenters, plumbers, electricians, maintenance staff, facility managers and operational personnel - a win-win situation for all.

Ms Shing said that particularly after a difficult year in 2020, this initiative would provide a positive boost for many clubs doing it tough.

Kayla is a rising star

By Andrew Copley Pearcedale youngster Kayla Cottrell has fast risen to stardom, becoming - at just 18 years of age - the youngest Victorian greyhound trainer to snare a Group 1 win following Fernando Cazz’s victory in the Rookie Rebel (600 metres) at The Meadows on 13 February.

And this Saturday night she’ll be looking to back it up when with Fernando Cazz’s brother, Fernando Bluey, to line up in the $429,000 Group 1 Australian Cup Final (525 metres), also at The Meadows.

Fernando Bluey made it eight wins from his past nine starts (he has won 17 from 30 overall) when winning an Australian Cup heat last Saturday, and he is one of the main chances in the final despite drawing box 6, mostly because of his phenomenal early speed.

“I don’t think it really matters where he is drawn because he has such brilliant box manners,” Kayla said.

Kayla comes from a rich sporting background, with her grandfather Len a ruckman at the Carlton Football Club in the 1950s, and cousin Matthew currently on the Blues’ playing list having famously kicked the winning goal against Sydney last year and rolling out a memorable celebration.

After working for two years as a stablehand for leading thoroughbred trainer Mick Price, last year Kayla decided it was time to grab the bull by the horns and put all her energy into the sport she grew up with - greyhound racing.

“I thought ‘am I going to makes something of myself being a number for a big trainer, or am I going to do it myself?’,” the 18-year-old trainer told RSN Radio and Sport’s Gareth Hall.

With the support of her parents, Dave Knocker and Janet Cottrell, plus the backing of 75-year-old Blind Bight breeder Alan Hunter, Kayla quickly established a super-competitive team of dogs.

The valley is set to get vicious for a valiant cause

By Nick Creely The Valley is once again going to get Vicious in the AFL Outer East competition to raise awareness and funds to find a cure for Rett Syndrome.

On Saturday at the Healesville Football Ground, the Valley Vicious Rett Syndrome Awareness Cup will return for its third year with a big day of sport featuring many of the Yarra Valley and south-east’s great characters set to entertain fans.

But it’s all for one incredibly important cause.

Lee Lawrence - owner of the ever-popular ‘Valley Vicious Footy and Netball Banter’ Facebook page - wants to continue raising awareness and funds for the disease, which he began working hard on after his daughter Gypsy was diagnosed with the devastating condition.

Rett Syndrome - a genetic brain disorder found almost exclusively in females and with a prevalence of one in about 15,000 females leads to severe impairments in life, including a child’s ability to speak, walk and eat, and infants and children with the disorder gradually lose previously acquired abilities, such as the control of the hands.

He is hoping for another big day despite the ongoing concerns related to Covid-19, and despite the stresses of Victoria’s recent lockdown and the pandemic is raring to go.

“It’s changed quite a bit, we firstly had to think about whether we’d bother, or if its viable,” he said.

“But a few of the committee members pushed me to get it done, and that’s what we’ve done - there’s been a few hurdles, but that’s what it is, and that’s what Covid is. cranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au

Lee said that Rett Syndrome and the ‘cruel’ nature of the disease continues to be the motivating factor for the highly-popular day on the sporting calendar, and he won’t stop until there is a cure.

“I just think about what we can do to find a cure for this cruel disorder, that’s all that really drives me,” he said.

“It’s about waking up to Gypsy every morning and seeing how she is, and trying to find a cure - and not just raising money, but raising awareness for Rett too.

“Three years ago, no one even knew about Rett Syndrome, and I feel like we’re really starting to get it out there and raising awareness for it.”

Lee also said that despite all of the challenges and hurdles in Gypsy’s life, she’s a remarkably upbeat and joyful girl.

“She’s going okay considering,” he said.

“At last year’s Rett Cup we had 15 Rett fam-

ilies there, and to see where they’re at, and to see where Gypsy’s at, we feel pretty lucky to be honest.

“Gypsy is not in a wheelchair or anything yet, it will eventually happen but she’s a happy little girl for now.”

And with all of the focus now on finding a cure, Lee said that medical progress is being made every single day.

“They’re getting closer and closer each day (to finding a cure),” he said.

“They continually update us on trials and stuff like that, which is awesome and they’re positive they’ll find a cure.

“We don’t know if it’ll be in Gypsy’s time frame, but I reckon they will find a cure eventually.”

It’s set to be a massive day of local sporting action for one vitally important cause, with no shortage of footy and netball with some of the region’s most loved characters.

The action will begin from 12pm when gates open at the ground, and at 1pm Lee will have his Welcome to Rett Cup 3 speech, followed by the national anthem and Gypsy song.

At 1.20pm, the Ladies football match will commence, with a special appearance from band ‘Queen Works’ set to entertain the crowd at half-time.

At the conclusion of the match, there will be a Welcome to Rett Cup 3 speech by Tahil Lawrence, the Ladies football presentation followed by a women’s sprint.

Following the match, the netball game will commence at 3.40pm, with a presentation to follow.

At 5pm, Lee will once again welcome the crowd, which will be followed by a traditional song, Welcome to Country and smoking cer-

emony, before the men’s football match commences at 5.30pm.

At half-time and at the conclusion of this match, there will be a Super Boot competition, while at 8pm, band ‘Full Strength’ will play while a raffle will also be drawn.

It also will be the first time local football and netball fans can get a glimpse of community sport since the corresponding Rett Cup last year - before the pandemic meant that all community sport would be cancelled in 2020.

There will also be plenty of special guests alongside some of the favourite local identities, with ex-AFL stars Russell Robertson, Lindsay Gilbee, Brodie Holland and Kelvin Moore all locked in to play in the men’s footy match.

Alongside all of the exciting sporting action, there will be food vans, kids amusements, live music and much more to entertain the crowd, which is capped at 5,000.

Tickets for adults will be $11, while it will be free for children under the age of 16.

Lee said it’s a brilliant opportunity for community sport starved fans to get back out to the local ground and come together as one for plenty of fun and laughs, but to continue the fight against Rett.

“No one has seen footy for a year, and we were really lucky to get away with a day last year,” he said.

“Luck’s been on our side again this year it’s going to be a massive day for anyone who loves local footy to get down and see some of the characters running around, some are exAFL champions.

“It’ll be a good day for the kids, also.”

Cranny takes care of bowls business CRANBOURNE BOWLS Cranbourne and the ladder-leading Clayton were scheduled to play each other last week but with the game cancelled it will now take the finals to separate these sides.

This week, Cranbourne took care of business against Bentleigh - winning by 16 shots and picking up another valuable 16 points playing away.

Head selector Doug Boggie was particularly pleased with Cranbourne’s second side winning at home against Narre Warren by 35 shots and picking up 16 points.

Skip George Ljepojevic was back in form in the third Cranbourne side and got his team over the line against Cranbourne RSL in a thriller by four shots, while the fourth Cranbourne side defeated Cardinia Waters by 11 shots.

Midweek bowls was played the previous week and gave Cranbourne victory against Narre Warren by 11 shots, thanks to a strong win by skip John McKenna and his crew by 24 shots.

Weekend Pennant - Round 11 results Side 1, Division 2, Section 9 Skip Jay Tootell was at his best, supported by his team of Ajendha Nar, Ken Fletcher and Tony Collins - winning by 11 shots and giving Cranbourne victory on the day by 16 shots and picking up 16 points.

This week Cranbourne plays at home against Cheltenham.

Cranbourne 90 (16 points) defeated Bentleigh 74 (2 points).

Side 2, Division 2, Section 10 A huge win against Narre Warren at home by 35 shots has given this team great confidence to take on the heavyweight teams over the next few weeks.

Skip Chris Griffiths and his crew of Hans Worstelling, Karen Hickson and Bill Bradbury put on a show - winning by 19 shots.

Cranbourne 92 (16 points) defeated Narre Warren 57 (2 points).

Side 3, Division 4, Section 6 Skip George Ljepojevic and his crew won the day, winning by 14 shots to give Cranbourne victory in a thriller by four shots.

George had great support from his crew of Helen Witherden, Rob Scott and Bill Sherriff.

Cranbourne 75 (16 points) defeated Cardinia Waters 64 (2 points).

Side 5, 12-a-side This was a very close game against Narre Warren, but Cranbourne went down by only three shots.

Cranbourne 55 (4 points) lost to Narre Warren 58 (12 points).

Midweek bowls results for Round 9 were: Side 1, Division 2, Section 6 Skip John McKenna played his best game of the year and was well supported by his crew of Vic Buttera, Lois Brock, and Roger Roscoe - winning by 24 shots to give Cranbourne victory by 11 shots on the day.

Side 2, Division 2, Section 9 A 16-shot loss by Cranbourne against Beaumaris means that this week’s clash against Mulgrave Country Club is a must-win contest.

Cranbourne 54 (2 points) lost to Beaumaris 70 (14 points).

Side 3, Division 4, Section 6 A solid win against the Dandenong Club by 44 shots was most welcome.

The best rink was that of skip Tony Whalley, Derek Maguire, Gerry Dudink and Lynne Whalley, who won by 24 shots.

Cranbourne 76 (14 points) defeated Dandenong Club 32 (2 points).

Side 4, Division 4, Section 8 A thrilling game came down to Cranbourne winning by three shots against Keysborough, with skip Rob Sorrensen and his crew of Allen Skurrie, John Forsythe and Brian Turton playing great bowls to enable the win.

Cranbourne 58 (14 points) defeated Keysborough 55 (2 points).

Unfortunately for Casey Softball fans and participants alike, Round 10 - and the Peta Edebone Cup - were casualties of the snap five-day Covid lockdown.

But the competition is back and raring to go this week. Cobras Maroon and Berwick Mohawks met in the first game of the mixed under-16s. The Cobras have been one of the stronger teams of the season and the Mohawks are ever improving. The Cobras started strong, but the Mohawks stuck with it - coming back strongly. Still, the Cobras hung on to win 16-10. Best for Cobras was Lily Flynn, and for the Mohawks it was Vancouver Estall.

Cobras Grey came up against Doveton in a seesawing affair. Doveton started strong, and then the Cobras evened it up. The Cobras then came back again and won 12-7. Best on ground was Ethan Lewis.

The mixed under-13s are all having a lot of fun learning how to play softball, with lots of laughs and excitement filling the air. Their wonderful coaches are doing a great job, and all at Casey Softball can see the improvement in their skills from the start of the season.

There were three games in the social women’s competition. Cranbourne Comets and MVP Falcons played out the closest game of the round. Until the bottom of the third innings it was very tight, with Cranbourne only scoring two runs.

MVP then had a three-run innings to go ahead, and then the Comets scored another at the top of the fourth to even it up. MVP was then kept scoreless and the Comets came out and scored five runs.

MVP came back with two late runs, but the Comets hung on for a thrilling 8-5 win. The best for the Comets was Deb Milton and for MVP Falcons it was Victoria Grant.

Berwick Geronimo and Cobras played a fun, but one-sided game. Great batting from Geronimo’s Shelley Ryder (with two home runs), a triple to Tracy Delphin, and two doubles to Jo Haines scored them a total of 22 runs. This was backed up by strong pitching from Caz Brook, who kept the Cobras scoreless.

Berwick Chickasaw played Narre Warren Penguins in the third game.

Chickasaw couldn’t quite get its game going, while the Penguins consistently scored throughout the game. There was great batting from Penguins Ros and Emily, and good all-around play from Chickasaw’s Jasmine Hawker.

In the open men’s competition Cranbourne came up against the Southern Knights. Cranbourne started strongly, taking an early 4-2 lead. At the top of the fourth, Southern Knights scored three runs, and took a one-run lead. The Knights then came home strongly with five at the top of the fifth and held on to win 10-4. Sam Beales was best for the Knights and Sam Rogers for Cranbourne.

In the second game, Trouser Snakes played the Chiefs. The Chiefs proved too strong for Trouser Snakes, scoring runs in each innings. Trouser Snakes managed to get three runs on the board at the top of the third, but the Chiefs emerged comfortable 15-3 winners. Best for the Chiefs was Scott Dean, and for Trouser Snakes it was Rhys Nayna.

The Chiefs came up against the Doveton Destroyers in the open ladies’ division. The Destroyers started strongly with six runs in the first innings. The Chiefs came back in the later innings, but Doveton won 11-6. Best for the Destroyers was Jacq Davis, and for Chiefs it was Tahuna Rhind-Luke. The two Berwick teams, Young Guns and Cheyenne, played each other in the final game of the round. The Cheyenne pitcher had a great game, pitching strongly had hitting a double that brought in two runs. Ally Hall for Young Guns caught well and had a nice hit. A genuine show of class

By Nick Creely DDCA TURF 1 AND TURF 2 REVIEW - ROUND 12 That’s a huge result for Buckley Ridges.

The Bucks - facing their great rival Springvale South away from home - were graced by the class of their star recruit, with Ian Cockbain blasting his way to victory in a gem of a knock.

There was an inevitability to the knock in many ways, and this one against a fellow premiership contender could prove the masterstroke in the Bucks’ quest for another piece of silverware.

It was a stern task for the Bucks, who were set 221 for victory after a strong batting performance from the Bloods.

Winning the toss and batting, the Bloods lost dangerous duo Nathan King and Ryan Quirk early, courtesy of a ripping new-ball spell from Michael Davies (3/52), and when Benny Howell prized out star bat Clint Tomlinson for 21, the home side was wobbling at 3/46.

But Jack Sketcher steadied the ship beautifully, compiling a classy 75, knocking five fours and four sixes to lead the way, linking up in a key partnership with Paul Hill (40) to get the home team in a strong position, eventually lifting beyond 200.

Daniel ‘DJ’ Watson was in no mood to waste time running down the target, racing away to 36 off just 18 deliveries like only he can, but a double-strike from Akshat Buch (2/22), firstly Watson and then bowling Benny Howell (21), saw the Bucks fall to 2/65.

As Cockbain entered Alex Nelson Reserve it was clear that if the visitors would pull of their most important win of the season, he needed to be there at the end.

The right-hander started steadily, building in small partnerships with Troy Aust (13) and skipper Jayson Hobbs (20) before he accelerated with precision.

As it looked like the Bloods were tightening the screws, Cockbain blew the game away, flaying a remarkable 95 not out as the Bucks took the points with four wickets left to spare. cranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au

But, despite the win, the Bucks are only just outside the four, with the Bloods holding on to fourth position by just .03 in what looms as a mouth-watering finish to the season.

St Mary’s produced a stunning result, upsetting Narre South’s run towards finals in what could loom as a costly loss for the Lions.

Sending the Saints in at Strathaird Recreation Reserve, Matt Brooks’ group restricted the visitors to 141, with seamer Josh Dowling (3/45) the man to lead the charge again, while Kirk Dickson (3/33) also got in on the act with some impressive bowling.

But it was a horror start to the chase, and one the Lions just couldn’t come back from in the end.

In-form batsman Kyle Hardy fell second ball, before skipper Matt Brooks was skittled the next delivery as the home side lost 2/0 off its first over.

New ball duo Deeshan Vimukthi (5/31) and Corey Ely (3/14) proved almost unplayable as the home side slumped to 5/23, and with very little answers.

Morteza Ali (36) showed the fight required to get the Lions back in the contest, but the Lions were bowled out in the 44th over.

Ladder-leading Hallam Kalora Park, meanwhile, show absolutely no signs of slowing down, brushing aside Heinz Southern Districts.

The Hawks were relentless after being sent out to field, rolling the Cobras for 70 in the 35th in a disciplined, well-drilled display of oneday bowling.

It could have, however, been a lot worse for the home team, who were at one stage 7/32.

Quick Will Whyte (2/9) was once again sublime, taking both openers’ wickets, while Lee Brown (3/11) controlled things through the middle and Leigh Booth (3/9) continued his outstanding season with another trio of wickets.

The Hawks were never really in any bother in the chase, running down the target with seven wickets to spare, as Sachith Jayasingha (33 not out) cooly guided the team home.

In the final match of the round, Berwick was made to work for it, but ultimately overcame North Dandenong after a matchwinning knock from Brodie Emmett.

The Maroons batted first, and clawed its way back from 4/70 to post a highly competitive 6/192 - largely off the back of the highly talented Imran Laghmani.

Laghmani belted 74 from just 79 balls with a total of nine boundaries to really make his mark with the bat, while skipper Clay McCartney was once again among the runs, compiling a fluent 45 not out.

It was yet another show of class from leggie Ruwantha Kellepotha, who snared 4/38 from his 12 overs to be a constant threat.

The Bears were dealt an early blow, with skipper Matt Chasemore falling in the opening exchanges, before dangerous keeper bat Jordan Cleland was trapped LBW for a quickfire 21.

At 2/35, Emmett - alongside the experience and power of Nathan Pilon (46) - got the home side back on track, before Pilon’s scalp gave the Maroons an opening.

Buddhika Janith (2/31) was up and about, bowling the dangerous Kellepotha and having Lachlan Brown caught, and suddenly - at 5/134 and needing near a run-a-ball - the home side were in trouble.

Brodie Emmett was the man of the moment and ultimately the difference in the end, crunching 74 from 112 balls (his second halfcentury of the season) to keep the runs flowing, bringing the game close before his departure once again shook things up.

But Josh Holden (19 not out) and James Wilcock (12 not out) quickly rattled off the remaining 26 runs, with the Bears registering a four wicket win with two overs to spare.

The Parkmore Pirates, meanwhile, have surged into the Turf 2 top four in a brilliant display against Cranbourne.

As a result of the victory, the Eagles have been replaced by the Pirates in fourth position with just two rounds of cricket left to play.

The Pirates sent the Eagles in to bat at

Wachter Reserve, and had some early success with important opener Craig Hookey departing.

But skipper Mick Sweeney dug in, compiling a vitally important 53 to help anchor the innings, but key scalps through the middleorder continually held the visitors back, with a late cameo from Braedyn Jansz (21) eventually helping the Eagles to 9/164.

The Pirates were made to work for the victory with impressive young seamer Trishane De Silva (4/36) bowling superbly, but a clutch knock from opener Johann Brohier (65 not out) guided the home side to its most important win of the season with four wickets and three deliveries in hand.

Beaconsfield also enhanced its premiership hopes with a dominant win against Parkfield at Perc Allison Oval.

The second-placed Tigers sent the visitors in, and were set 173 for victory with Luke Stow, Nathan Goodes and Brad Miles each chipping in with two wickets.

But it was with the bat that the home side truly shone, with Michael Vandort (49) continuing his stellar season with more runs, while fellow recruit Tyler Clark (49 not out) and Michael Dunstan (39 not out) were also clinical as the Tigers ran the total down with eight wickets left.

Lyndale, meanwhile, inflicted Dandenong West with a surprise loss at Greaves Reserve.

Batting first, Priyan De Silva was all class, blasting 69 to help guide the visitors to 8/172, with wickets falling around him at a steady rate.

A top-order collapse, sparked by a brilliant new ball spell from Harish Rao (4/41) had the Westers in deep trouble at 5/30, and in with dire need of a steadying knock.

Despite a battling knock from Karanbir Tiwana (32) the Westers were rattled by a stunning spell from Rohit Dixit (5/24), who rattled through the lower order to bundle the home side out for just 110.

And in the final game, Narre Warren (1/121) was in dominant touch against Narre North (119).
