By Jed Lanyon The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) One Walk will return to Healesville after a successful first year which saw over $11,000 raised to help find a cure for Type 1 Diabetes.

Healesville resident Beck Collins hosted the inaugural event last year and said she is looking forward to seeing the spirit of the Healesville community again, while raising awareness for the auto-immune condition.

"Last year we had about 200 walkers ...

We're hoping to get even more walkers again this year," Ms Collins said.

The JDRF One Walk isn't just for kids as the event will see plenty of adults with the condition join in, including Launching Place resident Caroline Smith who has been living with the condition for 22 years.

Ms Collins invites locals to form a small fundraising team of people who will be taking part in the walk.

Ms Collins said that Jack's classmates at Healesville Primary have been very supportive.

"The students know the signs and know what to do if his blood sugar levels are low," she said.

"We're really lucky that everyone around him knows and is able to help Jack if he does go low.

"If it does happen and it goes untreated, it can be quite dangerous ... The seriousness of the disease isn't quite widely known."

German tradition is all in good taste

The Yarra Valley's Oktoberfest was a rallying point for many locals to carouse with friends while enjoying traditional German beer and food.

Thousands of lederhosen-clad blokes and Bavarian beer maids descended on Lilydale to fill their steins and pay tribute to the Oktoberfest gods.

But, as the dust settles on another year, and die Bierleichen ("beer corpses") return to the land of the living and try to forget the drunken escapades of the weekend, The Mail is here to bring you all the photos from the day.

Black Spur closures The Maroondah Highway between Healesville and Narbethong, through the Black Spur was closed following a truck driving over the edge of the road.

Healesville Police said the incident took place on the morning of Friday 25 October requiring the road to be closed for four hours while emergency services removed the truck and trailer from the side of the highway.

The incident took place about 10am just south of Dom Dom Saddle and the truck driver walked away with minor injuries.

A woman was treated by paramedics after another crash at Fernshaw on Sunday night.

Emergency services were called to Maroondah Highway just after 9.10pm on 27 October.

The woman aged in her 70s was treated for minor injuries. She was flown by air ambulance helicopter to Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition.

The incident caused the Black Spur to close for several hours as paramedics reached the injured driver.

These incidents come just days after the Maroondah Highway was closed for emergency tree removal works.

The Department of Transport removed 12 trees in close proximity, forcing the Black Spur to close from 22-24 October.

The tree removal works will continue once again on 29 October as motorists are advised to detour along the Melba Highway through Yea and Alexandra.

New laws spark concerns for farmers

By Romy Stephens Yarra Valley farmers could be hit hard by new labour hire licensing laws introduced at the end of the month, according to Evelyn MP Bridget Vallence.

The new laws, overseen by the State Government's Labour Hire Authority, will require providers of labour hire services to hold a license from 30 October.

After this date, it will be illegal for hosts such as farmers - to use providers that have had their license application declined.

Ms Vallence said the Labour Hire Authority has lagged behind processing applications, which could put local fruit and vegetable growers at risk as they head into a busy time of year.

"Crops do not stop growing or ripening while the Andrews Government's Labour Hire Authority lags behind processing applications," she said. "The Government's poor implementation of these new laws puts local fruit

and vegetable farmers at risk of significant financial loss if crops cannot be picked, packed and delivered to market on time."

Fruit and vegetable growers typically rely on seasonal labour, sourced through trusted providers of labour hire services, to ensure produce is harvested and delivered to market on time.

To obtain a license, providers need to pass a 'fit and proper person test' and show compliance with workplace laws, labour hire laws, minimum accommodation standards and report annually on their activities.

Minister for Industrial Relations Tim Pallas said the scheme is intended to protect vulnerable workers while cracking down on dodgy operators.

"We're putting a stop to the widespread exploitation of workers in these key industries - it is not acceptable," he said.

"Our message to dodgy operators is clear: if your business model relies on the abuse and underpayment of workers, then your business

is simply not viable."

There will be a six-month transition period from 29 April in which providers can continue operating until a final decision on their application is made.

According to the Labour Hire Authority, that final decision covers appeal or review periods and decisions.

The Authority also claimed that during this transition period, hosts will have at least 28 days from the final decision to make arrangements with an alternative labour hire provider.

Host employers that use unlicensed providers face a maximum fine of more than $500,000.

Ms Vallence said the State Government should introduce a grace period to protect farmers.

Ms Vallence has raised the issue in Parliament and called upon Industrial Relations Minister Tim Pallas to urgently address the concerns.

Bundled Branches collections are coming up for households across the Yarra Ranges, giving residents a chance to clear their properties and dispose of excess vegetation.

Collections will be happening from 25 November to Friday 13 December. Residents can check Council's website to see when their street's collection date is.

Yarra Ranges Mayor, Tony Stevenson, encouraged residents to make the most of their collection to help clear their properties ahead of summer.

"The Bundled Branches collection gives all of our residents a chance to get rid of their branches and tree limbs easily, by putting them out on the kerb ahead of their collection week.

"Make sure to check your collection week and have your bundled branches out on the Sunday before so you don't miss it."

To ensure your bundled branches are collected, your material must be; no larger than three cubic metres and no more than 20 bundles of branches.Each individual bundle, tree limb or log must be no larger than 1.5m long and 200mm wide and Tree limbs must be between 75mm-200mm wide. Branches must also be tied with non-plastic string Council will not collect items if they are timber, stumps or roots, soil or earth, untied branches, loose garden organic material in boxes, bags or other containers, branches containing wire or nails, bamboo, creepers, vines, palm trees, soft plants, rose bushes, thorny plants, weeds, grass clippings or leaves.

Tackling family violence The 16 Days of Activism campaign runs each year across the globe from 25 November (International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) to 10 December (Human Rights Day).

This campaign aims to raise awareness of family violence and violence against women, including the role that disrespectful and sexist behaviour has in causing violence.

Preventing violence against women is an ongoing, year-round effort.

National organisation Our Watch leads this work through the 'Change the Story' framework, which sets out how gender inequality leads to violence against women and should be the focus of the efforts to prevent violence against women and their children.

Nonetheless, we still have a long way to go in this effort.

In the 2017 global index that measures gender inequality, Australia ranked 35th. According to the Australia Talks survey conducted by the ABC earlier this year, 60 per cent of the re-

spondents felt that gender equality was still a problem for Australia.

We are also yet to see any reduction in the prevalence of family violence. According to the Crimes Statistics Agency, in Victoria during the last financial year there was a 6.4 per cent increase in the rate of reported family violence incidents (per 100,000 people).

There were 1598 incidents reported in the Yarra Ranges alone, the second highest number for the eastern metropolitan region.

There has also been a 12 per cent increase in incidents where Victoria Police have applied for court orders to protect family members affected by violence.

The police can do this immediately by applying for a family violence safety notice, or later, by applying for a family violence intervention order.

If a person experiences family violence and the police are not involved, that person can make an application for an intervention order themselves.

Eastern Community Legal Centre (ECLC) provides free legal advice in relation to all family violence related court orders and applications.

ECLC is proud to support the 16 Days of Activism campaign through partnership with other local services, to raise awareness in the Yarra Ranges community around family violence and the causes behind it, so that as a community we can stop family violence before it begins.

School’s art is on show

By Jed Lanyon Wandin Yallock Primary School students' artistic talents were on full display at the grand opening of their annual art exhibition at Mont De Lancey.

Over 600 pieces of artwork were featured as every student had their work highlighted from throughout the school year.

Wandin Yallock students were the first to see the work, having toured the exhibition with their family members who were viewing the artwork for the first time.

Visual arts teacher Courtney Sharp said that she was proud to see her students work exhibited.

"I can put artwork on display within the school, which is lovely. But this is a professional space, so to them it adds another element of surprise and excitement,"she said.

"They get to walk away feeling very proud ... When it all comes together it looks amazing.

The school featured an array of artwork in their sixth annual exhibition from paper mache ice cream cones and modroc animal sculptures to ancient Egyptian artwork, hieroglyphics and self-portraits.

"Creating artwork with children isn't always easy. It can be a challenge as sometimes children don't think their work is good enough or they might need some encouragement to finish it," Ms Sharp said.

"This gives them an opportunity to be proud of their work. We really value their work and the arts program ... Here it all is, and we're here to celebrate it.

Wandin Yallock's art exhibition is open to the public for the next two weeks at Mont De Lancey and Ms Sharp encourages locals to come along for a view.

"We hope that we have lots of family members and community members coming through to see the work."

A look into the future with ‘Place’ plan push for Warby

By Jed Lanyon Yarra Ranges Council is putting together the Warburton Place Plan that will help guide future decisions about the town and how it may change over time.

Councillors unanimously approved the development of the Warburton Place Plan at the 22 October Yarra Ranges Council meeting held at the Warburton Arts Centre.

The place plan will be a document that will guide council's directions and actions in the area over the next 20 years, ensuring that the town's future matches the values and culture of the area.

Councillor Jim Child showed his approval for the place plan.

"I really believe this is the best starting position we can have with a Warburton Place Plan.

"The time has come, we have to really look at this town and the towns around it including Wesburn, Millgrove, East Warburton and Big Pats Creek."

Mr Child said that it was important to be looking at how actions will impact the town 10 and 20 years into the future.

Last month, council approved the Lilydale Place Plan to guide long term decision making around programs and infrastructure such as the Level Crossing Removal Project and the Kinley development.

Acting director of social and economic development Greg Box informed council that information regarding the Warburton Place Plan was available for viewing at the Warburton Arts Centre over the past months.

Yarra Ranges Enterprise Centre manager Alison Fitzgerald said that the place plan was a great start for the Warburton community.

Cire Services morphed into the Pied Piper of Yarra Junction on Tuesday 22 October when it hosted a teddy bears picnic bursting with fun and activities to celebrate National Children's Week.

Pre-schoolers and primary school students converged at Yarra Junction Reserve for the festivities accompanied by family members.

An estimated 400 people attended, creating a vibrant community festival atmosphere as they immersed themselves in the magic of local drummer Kofi Kunkpe, story time with Eastern Regional Libraries, a toddler dance class with Count Me In Dance Company, badge making, plaster mould painting, playdough and lots more.

It was one-stop shopping for local information and treats with stalls promoting a range of Cire's programs, the CFA complete with a fire truck along with local pre-schools and primary schools and many more.

The theme for this year's National Children's Week was, 'children have the right to be healthy, safe and happy. Richer countries should help poor countries achieve this'.

In keeping with that theme and to plant the seeds of social justice, Cire showcased a charity it supports in North Bali.

Donations received will be forwarded to the Aura Sukma Insani Foundation Peduli Sesama Philanthropic Work whose main focus is education, housing and medical care in remote areas.

The 2019 Poppy Appeal has begun, and the Upper Yarra RSL Sub-Branch needs your help to raise much-needed funds to support our veterans.

Tony Stevenson bid farewell as Yarra Ranges Mayor at the Yarra Ranges Council meeting on 22 October.

In his final speech as Mayor Cr Stevenson expressed his gratitude to his fellow Councillors for their vote of confidence and reflected on the events of the past year - most notably, Council receiving federal funding to seal over 180kms of roads.

“This is the last Council Meeting of this Mayoral Term so thought I would take the opportunity to reflect on a year that has gone fast,” Cr Stevenson said.

“Among my first words were that being elected Mayor was both a great honour and a responsibility. I certainly thank my fellow Councillors for the trust they placed in me.

“It’s been a very busy term which has encompassed a State Election, Federal Election and the recruitment and appointment of a new CEO, as well as addressing many local issues and opportunities.”

“Through the run up to the State Election and beyond we advocated strongly to local MPs, Ministers and bureaucrats for the funding our communities need to modernise our sport and play facilities, enhance our creative spaces and encourage local jobs.”

“We’re one of 79 local governments in Victoria vying for funds but we continue to win funding through good relationships, persistent advocacy and a strong record of delivering.”

“In Australia there are 547 local councils, all fighting for funding and only two, Yarra Ranges and Cardinia secured this critical road infrastructure funding which will change the face of our area?”

The Chandler Ward Councillor said the experience has been enlightening and he looked forward to the coming year.

By Jed Lanyon Prepare for a frightening Halloween at GAMR as their laser tag arena transforms into a maze of horror.

Bring some friends for some laser tag action but beware as some of Hollywood's scariest characters will be luring about ... and they aren't there for fun.

GAMR VR will present exclusive horror games in virtual reality. Walk through a haunted house playing Affected - The Manor or try and escape Bloody Mary.

Arcade games will be on free play all night for all and prices start from $25 per person.

GAMR is a fun, family friendly entertainment complex housed on the first level of the Oz Tenpin Entertainment complex.

On the weekend of 2-3 November, Open Gardens Victoria will open nursery owner Gusti Orth's garden in a spectacular Yarra Valley setting.

Now in its 100th year, this charming Coldstream garden was once part of St Huberts Coldstream winery in the 1800s.

The plantation-style house was built in 1919 and the original wine cellar still exists on the property.

Nursery owner Gusti has developed many different areas in the garden over the decades, all set amongst expansive lawns.

Some of the original trees include a huge old oak (Quercus robur), elm (Ulmus glabra) and a Bunya Pine (Araucaria bidwillii), which is one of three planted by Baron von Mueller in the local area.

Next to the house is a fernery, a secluded space which is home to many flowering succulents in hanging baskets.

The front of the house features a stunning rose garden that provides colour for most of the year, with many of the roses planted en masse.

Sections of native planting divide the garden from the adjacent vineyards, which are quite beautiful in their own right at this time of year.

A European-style hedged garden just gets bigger and better every year with masses of colourful perennials and irises. It will be a riot of colour at the opening.

The Japanese garden is the latest addition with some established magnolias anchoring the garden in this area.

A large vegetable garden is still used today together with some of the fruit trees that were planted in the orchard many years ago.

Healesville will be hosting its second Festa di via Verde as part of the Yarra Valley's celebration of Italian culture on Saturday, 16 November from 12-6pm at Green street.

Hosted by comedian Gabriel Rossi, the festival will coincide with the late afternoon arrival of the Targa Florio Australian Tribute which runs along River street.

Spectators can watch international drivers complete the time trials, or visit the mass gathering of car clubs for a 'Show n Shine'.

Celebrity chefs Tobie Puttock and The Italianos from My Kitchen Rules will present Italian cooking demonstrations, while stalls will be serving Italian food and wine.

Children are well catered for too with family-friendly activities such as go-karts, foosball, kids cooking classes. There will also be a roving fire-eating and pizza dough acrobatics performer.

Musical entertainment includes Santa Taranta playing Pizzica, Tammurriata and Stornelli plus the well known traditional Italian Ballard singer Dean Canan.

Bella Ciao will be playing their Italian repertoire on accordion and bass, while a squeezebox circle will entertain the crowds with traditional music throughout the day.

Festa di via Verde kicks off Ciao Yarra Valley Ciao festival which is a two-week celebration of all things Italian.

Visitors can expect a huge showcase of Italian food, wine, entertainment and themed events across the entire Yarra Valley region from 15 November to 1 December.

Scores take a weather hit

By Anthony Sequeira Rain battered the Yarra Valley this weekend, as multiple games were called off without a ball bowled.

In Strachan Shield, Yarra Junction played a 13 over game against Healesville in the final T20 round for the season.

Tyson Gaskett and Kevin Bomford set the tone early for the Eagles, rotating the strike well while finding the boundary often enough to keep the Bloods on the back foot.

Healesville's Jordan Poynton maintained pressure with the ball but lacked support, as Yarra Junction saw off the opening bowler and attacked from the other end.

Healesville managed to take some momen-

tum to the innings break with three late wickets halting the Yarra Junction charge.

Chasing 99, Healesville was behind the eight ball from the beginning of the innings.

Having led with the bat, Bomford also led with the ball, bowling three economic overs and taking two wickets.

Late hitting proved futile as the Bloods needed 30 off the final over, however, could only manage eight seeing Yarra Junction walk away with the points.

In Finger Trophy, rain led to another reduced game between Healesville and Yarra Junction, this time 11 overs.

The Eagles batted first and, apart from an early wicket to Jay Tacey, put on a command-

ing performance with the bat.

Ray Turner was resolute, striking a run a ball, alongside the dangerous Josh Nightingale, who struck 49 from 26 balls to lead Yarra Junction to 1/96.

Starting the chase, Healesville lost both openers early to Darren Lever, but Tyler Tweedie scored freely to keep the Bloods within grasp.

But in the end, it was too much left too late as Healesville could only hit 18 of the 28 required for victory from the final over.

The weather rained on Coldstream's parade with its clash against Wandin declared a draw.

Wandin accrued 69 runs for the loss of six

wickets, with only Rhett Smith making a solid contribution to the score.

Wandin batsmen were constantly troubled by the Coldstream bowling attack led by Daniel Sharp.

Unfortunately for Coldstream, rain came before it could complete its chase and sides shook hands with Coldstream 1/24 and the points shared.

In one day grade, Jake Neale (44) and Brad Norman (50) led Poweltown as they chased down Wandin's 125.

Hoddles Creek was led by C.Derix (47*) and Jack Jenkinson (40) as it accounted for Coldstream and Launching Place 2nd XI wrapped up Launching Place 3rd XI (39).

Yarra Ranges athletes dominate State Championships

By Jamie Strudley Sixteen Yarra Ranges Athletics (YRA) athletes represented their respective schools at the Victorian All Schools Track and Field Championships at Tom Kelly Athletics Track over the weekend.

The cold stormy conditions made for challenging conditions for all athletes, officials and spectators.

YRA athletes Georgia Laven, Grace Muller, Madeline Laven, Kiara Flavel, Lily Peacock, Ashlinn Walker, Zoe Sibley and Mia Strudley earned medals over the two days of competition.

Winners will be decided on 2 November.

Next weekend is a Friday twilight with a modified program including some handicap

sprints and an appearance from senior athletes.

Warm ups from 5.45pm with the first event at 6pm.

A week of upsets

Overcast conditions and misty showers greeted competitors to the Woods Point Gun Club for the Bernie Elstrek Memorial shoot.

Shooters from Woods Point, Mansfield, Bright, Melbourne, the Yarra Valley, Gippsland and the Mornington Peninsula rolled in for the early start.

The Eye Opener resulted in Jim West, Phillip Desmond, Cameron Trevitt and Ross Elstrek (15/15 each) share the AA Grade cash.

Allan Kidd won A Grade outright (15/15) with Laurie Poile, Steven Howlett and Geoff Hill (14/15) sharing B Grade. John Desmond had a nice little earner (12/15) in his C Grade win. The Bernie Elstrek 20 target Double Barrel Memorial Championship saw Kidd and Trevitt both return 20/20 scores to go into a shoot off for the championship sash. In the end, Trevitt outlasted Kidd to win 32/32 to 31/32.

In the grades, Trevitt (20/20) won AA Grade with Ian Findlay finishing second after a shoot off with David McGregor. A Grade was won

by Kidd (20/20) with David Allen (19/20) in second place. A short shoot off between John Winters and Steven Howlett resulted in a win for Winters. Justin Broderick was a clear winner in C Grade.

The main event was the Bernie Elstrek 60 target Memorial Trophy which showcased Continental and 30 targets Tower, two unique and challenging disciplines.

After the 30 target Continental, no one had a clear grasp on the trophy so a good result in the 30 target Tower event was crucial.

In the end, it was Ross Elstrek (57/60) who proudly held his father's trophy aloft. Allan Kidd (75/80) also won the Memorial High Gun Sash.

The club's next shoot is on 24 December starting at 9.30am.

It will feature the Brian Prothero Memorial Trophy and the annual President's Championships.

Warburton Bowls Club's Tuesday Midweek team played Boronia 1 away in excellent weather conditions.

The side lost its first game for the season, 42 to 64.

Rink scores were as follows: P.Summers 13/17, R.McKail 21/18 and G.Broussard 8/29.

In challenging weather conditions on Saturday, Warburton 1 played top side Burden Park 1 at home and recorded an 84 to 64 victory.

Rink scores were as follows: B.Woods 18/18, P. Woods 13/22, J.Brookes 21/15 and J.Van Der Zweep 32/19.

Warburton 2 also played the top side, Ferntree Gully 3, at home and secured a convincing 90 to 51 win.

Rink scores were as follows: B.Hall 16/21, T.Appleton 32/9, P.Summers 20/13 and G.Wynd 22/8.

Course tamed: Newcomer kicks into gear

By Ron Hottes New Warburton Golf Club member Peter Ingamells has certainly familiarised himself with his new course.

He amassed 40 impressive points at the club's 23 October stableford to easily take home the daily voucher.

Adam Patrick - who is warming up for the Championships next month - was the runnerup with a 70 off-the-stick and 37 points.

Balls extended to 35.

The nearest the pins went to Steuart Hawke (3rd), Ken Barratt (9th), Max Carvill (10th), Ross

Machar (12th) and Alan 'A.J' Johnson (15th).

This week's twilight competition saw a relaxed nine holes of golf and a great meal afterwards.

The most relaxed in the field, scoring 22 points, was Andy Sweet.

Andy only plays twilight and clearly saves his best golf for Thursday afternoon's competition.

The Flying Scot, Mr Leckenby, had 20 points to grab the runner-up prize. Balls went to 16.

The nearest the pin on the 3rd went to Steuart Hawke, Clint Toohey (6th) for a superb second shot and Sammy Patrick grabbed the one on the 9th, nearly slotting a hole-in-one.

The club's Stroke and Medal of Medallists play-off took place on 26 October.

Andy Lockey made sure he would be the 2019 Medallist, by winning the daily A Grade voucher as well.

His solid 37 points was the best score on the day.

President John Hall, was next best with 35 points, allowing him to claim the B Grade prize.

The ball rundown got to 33.
