By Jed Lanyon Tarrawarra resident Jacqui Feagan has taken out a multitude of cattle breeding awards at this year's Royal Melbourne Show.

Ms Feagan of Tarrawarra Lowlines took out the supreme champion Australian lowline exhibit and best lowline exhibitors award, as well as grand champion male, female and junior champion heifer.

"All the animals we took were broad ribbon winners, it was pretty exciting" Ms Feagan said.

"We also won the size progeny class and the group class. We didn't have a senior bull there

but in every other area we cleaned up.

"You don't go with any expectations, so then you can't be disappointed ... But it was fantastic, it was almost embarrassing."

Ms Feagan joked that she would need a truck to bring home all of the ribbons and trophies she accumulated from the show.

Tarrawarra Lowlines was one of 590 beef cattle entries in this year's Royal Melbourne Show.

Ms Feagan said it takes a lot of hard work to prepare her cattle for a show and that she would be feeding, grooming, washing and training them for up to 12 weeks prior to an event.

"It's a lot of work washing them, blowing their coats several times a week in preparation for them to go to a show.

"They've got to be trained to stand up and to show themselves and to lead."

Ms Feagan said it wasn't possible without the help of her husband Richard, as well as Colin Kirkpatrick and Eva Murphy.

She said the greatest reward were comments from Australian lowline judge Tom Isedale, who said they had a strong future for their breeding program.

"It gives us confidence that we're heading in the right direction with our beef cattle," she said.

Mr Isedale was impressed with Faith, the cow awarded as supreme champion Australian lowline, and her calf Tank.

"I love the body... the udder on her and the calf behind her is only three months of age and that's an absolutely outstanding calf, a calf that's going to have a big future and that's what we like to see, cows that can produce equal to or better than themselves," he said.

One; that learning about different cultures and experiencing new things makes us better humans, and two; we as humans need to be fed and watered.

You can do both of these things at the Yarra Valley Oktoberfest on 26 October.

I mean, can you even stay conscious thinking about salty pretzels, chicken schnitzel, bratwurst, mashed potatoes and steins full of German beer? That's a big oooft people.

Depsite being 16,000 kilometres from Munich, the Yarra Valley Oktoberfest brings all this and more to the Yarra Ranges.

Festival Director Mel Jansen said that the festival - now in its third year - continues to grow and has a strong following in the community.

"This year the event gained a lot of momen-

tum and we've really upped the ante on everything."

"We're starting the day off with a sevenpiece oompah band which will get toes tapping, and of course there will be a DJ to kick things up a notch later."

With a massive beer hall and garden, food trucks, German entertainment, DJ's and, of course, beer, the festival is a must for locals.

As in previous years, prizes will be awarded for best dressed, and there will be preztel eating and stein-holding competitions too.

The true champion of any Oktoberfest is the beer though and there will be several authentic German beers available on tap. So, sit down and buckle up your lederhosen, because you're in for a malty treat.

"By way of beers, we have gone a great variety of six German beers and two local beers from the new Hop Hen and Hargreaves."

The only thing better then sinking a couple of German Buzz light beers is saving the planet, which you can do at the same time!

The booking fees from the event are donated to provide meals for disadvantaged Australian school kids, and the event is one of few that incorporates a stein washing system to significantly reduce single use plastics.

"We've got all the German inspired cuisine, all the bratwurst, sour kraut and pretzels and Ggoulash and german beers."

"It's always a bit of fun and people can get all dressed up and embrace it."

There you have it people, donn your lederhosen and dirndl and go sink some brewskis in true German style.

The open weekend will feature five gardens starting in Seville, extending to the Warburton area.

The gardens will be open from 10am to 4.30pm on both days and will be sign-posted

Warburton RSL Sub-Branch President Wayne Morgan said that they would love to see new volunteers donate their time in support of the Poppy Appeal.

“We need our community’s support to reach our goal. We would love to see more volunteers out there selling badges and being a part of helping to raise much needed funds for veterans,” Mr Morgan said.

“We would welcome the support of anyone who has an hour or two of their time to donate to the Appeal.

“This could involve helping us pack poppies into trays, dropping our Poppy Appeal boxes off at local businesses or helping us sell poppies for an hour or two at the local shops” Mr Morgan said.

Stick to your recycling Yarra Ranges Council is urging residents to continue recycling, following recent media reports of some councils in other regions having to send recyclables to landfill.

Council states that recyclables collected in the area will not be diverted to landfill.

Yarra Ranges Council uses VISY for its recycling collection and processing, and is confident that recyclables collected in the area will continue to be processed.

Recent closures of other company's recycling plants have not impacted recycling collection or processing in this area.

Cafe mural closer

By Romy Stephens The Locavore Studio cafe is a step closer to keeping its outdoor mural but is still fighting to retain a certain aspect of the artwork.

The Yarra Ranges Council met with cafe owner Jessie Crossley last month and granted permission for the mural to be kept based on the condition that the writing 'locavore' was removed.

The council's acting director of social and economic development, Greg Box, said the size and prominence of the business name on the mural did not meet planning scheme requirements.

"We've recently received advice that because of the painted coat on the wall before the mural was created, a re-painted surface can be considered," he said.

"However, the mural currently features the name of the business in large letters, which would require a planning permit.

"The mural, if altered to remove the business signage aspect, would meet the requirements of the Planning Scheme."

However, Ms Crossley claimed she was told by the council that a complaint was the reason the mural couldn't stay.

"Pretty much what it came down to was that they are happy for the mural to stay," she said.

"But there was another complaint that it's unfair we have such a big wall to have advertising on.

"That's the reason why we need to paint over the word locavore."

Ms Crossley said that although she didn't agree with the decision, she was pleased the

Sergeant Richard Coulson told the Mail that five cars had been broken into over the last fortnight.

"In each instance the cars have been left unlocked," he said.

Wild journey ahead thanks to leader camp Year 10 students at Ranges TEC will be putting their outdoor skills to the test during a sixweek leadership program called Wild Journey.

The program will see the students undertaking a variety of adventure activities including caving,white-water rafting, abseiling, rockscrambling, river-sledding and hiking.

The program connects young people with nature and provides a catalyst for personal development. Yarra Ranges Mayor, Tony Stevenson, said outdoor adventure activities are designed for young people to look at their strengths and the strengths of others and develop coping strategies and life skills.

"There is a great body of evidence showing the benefits that a connection to nature has on positive mental health," Cr Stevenson said.

"Wild Journey creates an incredible sense of achievement for the young people and by the end of it as they look back at how much they've progressed in their abilities and confidence.

"The program is an opportunity for young people to learn experientially in a safe and controlled outdoor environment where they get to push their comfort zones.

A man is in hospital under police guard following a siege in Seville on Tuesday 8 October.

Officers were called to a residence on Candy Close about 4.20pm following reports that a man was armed with a weapon and was refusing to come out of the house.

According to police reports the man was threatening to burn the house down with a gas torch and had spent time fortifying the house.

He was also armed with a firearm.

A Critical Incident Response Team attended the incident with negotiators able to coax the man outdoors.

The 33-year-old Seville man was apprehended without incident and taken to hospital for assessment.

Residents reported that nearby Seymour Street and Drummond Road had been blocked as police responded to the incident.

Burn offs The CFA is urging people to take extreme care when burning off.

CFA chief officer Steve Warrington reminded residents to register burn-offs and check the local conditions on the day.

"We encourage residents to take advantage of the window of opportunity to clean up their properties before the bushfire season, but we're also reminding people to always register their burn-offs so we know what is happening in the area, especially if brigades are being called to fires," Mr Warrington said.

"It reduces the chances of CFA brigades being called out unnecessarily if a member of the public calls about smoke or a fire in the area."

The CFA urged residents to be aware of weather conditions along with council local laws.

"The effects of an out-of-control fire can be devastating," Mr Warrington said.

"Even if you have registered your burn, conditions can change quickly and fires can get out of control within minutes in hot and windy conditions."

Residents need answers Recently the Andrews State Government announced its plan for Skyrail at Mooroolbark and Lilydale, the gateway to the Yarra Valley.

Removing these dangerous crossings is certainly needed, however removing genuine community consultation is not. Many questions remain unanswered.

There is silence from the Government about the need to duplicate the track between Mooroolbark and Lilydale, a station at Kinley Estate, the net loss of over 120 car parks at Lilydale, and the plan to demolish the 130-yearold heritage Mooroolbark Station.

Our community deserves to be engaged in the process, consulted and listened to.

Unfortunately, the Government intends to change the local Yarra Ranges Planning Scheme without holding a formal consultation process in accordance with the Planning and Environ-

ment Act. This will stifle our community’s voice and input into this key infrastructure change.

What does this mean? The changes will allow the Government’s Level Crossing Removal Project to bypass and remove all permit triggers ordinarily required by law from the Council.

Local residents, businesses, community groups, and the Council will have no say or

power in relation to planning, design or construction.

This is an extremely disappointing outcome because it means the community will be denied the opportunity to express their views, as they would in any other planning scheme amendment proposal, in an independent forum.

Our community deserves better and deserves to be heard.

Regularly meeting with residents, businesses and community groups, I’ve heard what matters to you for this infrastructure project.

Genuine consultation and a re-evaluation of the project scope could deliver significant improvements to the rail corridor and address critical infrastructure needs of our community, particularly given the anticipated growth at the Kinley residential development at Lilydale Quarry, Cave Hill.

The Lilydale Line is consistently the worst performing Metro line and desperately requires duplication of the rail track between Mooroolbark and Lilydale, as well as a new station at Kinley and upgrading of the bridge and intersection on Mooroolbark Road at Hull Road.

Our community deserves more, not less, car parking at Lilydale to cater for existing and future demand for people in Lilydale and further afield in Mount Evelyn, Wandin, Seville, Coldstream and Yarra Glen.

And, we must preserve our heritage: important historical buildings like Mooroolbark Station should be valued not demolished.

I’ll continue to voice the community’s concerns and aspirations in the Victorian Parliament and together we can work toward better outcomes in our community.

Community spirit spurred

By Jed Lanyon Marysville and Healesville community members gathered for a public meeting on Thursday 10 October regarding safety issues with the Black Spur as well as options for a potential alternate route.

Eildon MP Cindy McLeish spoke at the meeting and said she was happy to see a turnout of over 100 people.

"People speak to me about the issues on the Black Spur all of the time," she said.

"To see everybody in Marysville and surrounds come together so passionately to share their concerns and issues, it's terrific.

"People love the Black Spur. They love the unique character of the spur and are very aware of any works being done and the need for that character to be maintained."

Ms McLeish said that some of the items raised were the safety of pullover destinations and the need to seal those areas, as well as the impact of signage.

She hopes that the significant turnout sends a message to the state government to strengthen their campaign for upgrades in the region.

Residents had expressed their frustrations earlier in the week following the closure of the highway for emergency tree removal works by VicRoads on Tuesday 9 October.

A VicRoads department of transport spokesperson told the Mail, "We closed a section of Maroondah Highway for emergency works to remove a large tree which had fallen onto another tree.

"We thank drivers and the local community

for their patience and understanding while we completed these important works."

While VicRoads initially informed residents that the road would be closed from 7am to 7pm, they said that the Black Spur was reopened at 2.45pm, hours earlier than anticipated.

Many residents found out about the closure via electronic variable message signs that were in place along the Maroondah Highway and surrounding roads.

Much of the delay was due to the heavy machinery that had to be brought in to help remove the trees.

But locals are set for more travel headaches as VicRoads announced that the Black Spur will close once again from 21-24 October 7am to 5pm after VicRoads identified a number of

trees that need to be removed.

Murrindindi Shire Council informed residents that these works were originally scheduled to take place on 14-17 October, but had since been changed to provide more notice to those affected.

On 9 August, Angie Suryadi was killed after a tree struck her car while travelling along the Maroondah Highway in Fernshaw. Her three family members suffered significant injuries as a result of the incident.

Ms McLeish told the Mail that 12 trees have been identified for removal in the upcoming works.

"They will need to bring cranes in ... We questioned whether they could get twice the gear in and do it quicker, but the trees are too close together," Ms McLeish said.

Fun of work at field days

By Jed Lanyon Yarra Ranges community members celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Wandin Silvan Field Days on Friday 11 and Saturday 12 October 2019.

The event featured exhibitors ranging from farm machinery, light industrial equipment, motor vehicles and motor bikes, irrigation equipment and water tanks to information on the latest pest and weed control, fertilisers and chemicals.

Arts and crafts, patchwork, lavender products and gardening products, were popular, along with demonstrations on weaving and leatherworking.

The entrance fees from the event were donated to local CFA brigades.

Help at hand for orphans

An orphaned kangaroo joey.

Zoos Victoria urges motorists to stop and assist an animal following a collision or sighting, if it is safe to do so.

The animal may have a young joey in its pouch so the pouch should be checked.

Animal behaviour can be unpredictable, especially when stressed, it is important to assess the risk before assisting the animal. If you are unsure it is best to call for assistance.

Call your local, state or territory wildlife rescue group. Wildlife Victoria is the best point of call in Victoria on 03 8400 7300.

Even if the animal has moved away we recommend you still call Wildlife Victoria as the animal is most likely injured.

Wildlife Victoria can scout the location to find the animal, check its condition, and whether it has any young.

The days are getting longer, the sun is shining brighter, and new babies are springing up all over Victoria.

Unfortunately, for the team at Healesville Sanctuary, this comes with a spike in the number of wombats, kangaroo and koala joeys, and even a baby emu being treated for road trauma at the Australian Wildlife Health Centre.

Since 1 September, the AWHC has seen 137 patients, who have come into contact with cars, other animals, and also the heavy rains of the past month.

AWHC manager Gerry Ross said the hospital sees a marked rise in wildlife cases in spring and summer because of the breeding conditions.

"It's tough out there come breeding season, with an increase in competition, leading to a reduction in resources," Ms Ross said.

"As a result, you see animals wandering across roads in search of more food for their new young."

Zoos Victoria is asking motorists to be especially watchful at dusk and dawn and to slow down if they see an animal on the road.

Wildlife have a strong flight response when scared and the sight and sound of a vehicle may trigger this response.

Headlights can 'blind' our native animals so if you do see a group of animals roadside, your best bet is to slow down to a safe braking speed as you pass them.

Remember that animals often gather and travel in groups. One can be a sign of others nearby.

Movie night a needed gift

By Jed Lanyon Healesville High School is hosting a movie fundraiser night to raise money for Cam's Cause.

School captain and organiser of the event Alex Gommers said, "Cam's Cause is a veterans welfare organisation ... They assist veterans once they've come back from war, who are trying to get back into normal life."

The school will be playing Hacksaw Ridge at the Ion Whykes Theatre "It's not your typical war movie, where there's all action and it sort of glorifies war and that sort of thing.

"It's kind of the opposite as it's about a soldier who refuses to shoot a gun. And in turn he helps people and saves lives in the process.

Alex said he hopes to raise $2500 for the cause.

Principal Allan Rennick had high praise for Alex, who pitched the idea after attending another movie fundraiser.

"We have a subject called Making a Difference in Year 8 and 9 and Alex sort of epitomises that.

"He makes a difference. All we have to do is support Alex and provide a venue and everything else will sort of happen.

"It just really fits perfectly with what I would like us to be as a school.

"We've got some outstanding facilities at this school, and if we could use those to benefit a great cause, then why wouldn't we do it?"

Mr Rennick said.

Alex said he hopes to see the 250 seats of the Ion Whykes Theatre filled for the viewing on Friday 25 October.

Microchipping blitz to prevent homeless pets

By Sarah Booth Volunteers will be microchipping local pets for just $10 on Sunday 20 October at PETstock Lilydale.

Microchipping, which typically costs $80, is compulsory for dogs and cats in the Yarra Ranges Council area.

But there are still thousands of owners all over Australia who haven't microchipped their animals, according to PETstock assist charity and events coordinator Jess Guilfoyle.

She said the chips, whose unique ID is recorded in a database of owner's contact details, are "crucial ... to the safe return of lost pets."

The initiative is now in its third year at the Lilydale store and store manager Glenn Townsend said that previous drives had been a huge success.

"I was surprised (by the number of pets).

We were pretty much nearly fully booked out," he said.

Mr Townsend believes the initiative is especially important for rural areas, where the costs of microchipping for low-income families with multiple pets can quickly add up.

As a dog owner himself, he understands the importance of microchipping.

The decision to microchip his family's German Shepherd Gryff, who is named after

Gryffindor house from Harry Potter, was "a no brainer".

He's comforted knowing that if Gryff ever gets out, it will be easy for local shelters or vets to identify himself as the owner.

"It gives me peace of mind."

The initiative's national project manager Christine Robertson agreed with Mr Townsend, describing a lost pet as "heartbreaking" for owners and "traumatic" for their four-legged friend.

She said the initiative doesn't just help owners but also the "understaffed and underfunded rescue groups", who typically care for people's lost pets.

For Mr Townsend, the initiative is a chance for the store to give back and hopefully take the pressure off overwhelmed pounds.

He said the non-invasive procedure only takes a couple of seconds and is pretty painless.

Dogs, cats and small animals including rabbits and guinea pigs are all welcome, but horses, livestock, birds and reptiles are not eligible for the initiative.

Artisans showcase skills The Yarra Glen Racecourse will be buzzing with the sights and sounds of artists as the inaugural Yarra Valley Arts, Crafts and Antiques Expo (YVACCA) comes to life this month.

The expo will see more than 160 highlyskilled artisans - including blacksmiths, jewellers and wood-turners - showcase their work at the expo which takes place on 19 and 20 October.

Visitors will find a range of stalls featuring everything from oil and watercolour paintings to fine gold and silver jewellery, sculpture, leather goods (including hand-sewn jackets and trousers), fine adults and children’s clothing, games, puzzles, vintage signs and much more.

It’s set to be a major event, with inquiries from potential stallholders coming from across Australia and even as far afield as North America.

Director of the organising company Emmanuel Panourakis said his office had been busy fielding last-minute enquiries from exhibitors and stallholders that don’t want to miss out on the inaugural event.

“This is the start of a bi-annual premier event for our state and response has been even more enthusiastic than we anticipated,” he said.

“We have committed to run YVACCA at Yarra Valley Racing Centre, Yarra Glen, Spring and Autumn for the next ten years and we have already started taking bookings from exhibitors for Autumn.”

Entertainment will be a major feature of YVACCA with acts including the Black Kites and acoustic performer Steven Clark.

The Fine Wine, Cheese and Beer Pavilion will prove to be a major attraction with numerous premier Victorian vineyards and craft breweries attending, including Pyrenees vine-

All set for plant fair This month, the second Yarra Valley Plant Fair will take place in Wandin.

On 26 and 27 October, visitors can look and learn about the widest range of plants, how to use them, how to grow them and how they fit into a home garden.

The event’s organisers, the Larkman family, are long term residents and nursery operators in the Yarra Valley and growers of all sorts of plants.

They have invited people from all sectors of the nursery industry.

Visitors can view thousands of different plants and talk to growers, collectors and breeders who have great knowledge of their plant types and are a wealth of information.

Cold Chisel tops bill at day on green

By Jed Lanyon There's nothing more Australian than hot sun, warm waves and Cold Chisel.

The band's classic songs like Khe Sanh, Flame Trees, Bow River, My Baby, Cheap Wine, Saturday Night and You Got Nothing I Want have become the soundtrack to Australian summers.

Since their legendary Last Stand way back in 1983, Cold Chisel has re-formed for just four national tours.

Now, for the first time ever, this iconic Australian band will be playing 14 very special outdoor shows in Australia and New Zealand during summer, including an unforgettable a day on the green at Rochford Wines, on Friday 10 January, 2020.

A day on the green has long championed Australian music and is thrilled to welcome back one of the most iconic home grown rock bands of all time - Cold Chisel.

One of only three Victorian shows, tickets to this event will be in huge demand when they go on sale on Monday 21 October at 11am from Ticketmaster, with pre-sale tickets going on sale on Wednesday 16 October at 2pm.

It's called the Blood Moon Tour 2020 named after a rare lunar eclipse where the sun, earth and moon all briefly align before returning to their own orbits.

"You might get to see a blood moon once in your life," explains the band's main songwriter and piano player, Don Walker.

"Apparently there's going to be one just before dawn when we're in Melbourne on this tour, but we didn't actually know that when we chose the name. Maybe it's a sign."

Fittingly, the tour will boast a series of lineups that are as rare and memorable as a blood moon.

Joining Cold Chisel at Rochford Wines will be Birds of Tokyo, Magic Dirt and The Detonators.

Gemini Man is a rare case of wildly uneven parts producing an engaging thriller whole.

Retired government assassin Henry Brogan (Will Smith) must face off against a younger clone of himself (also Smith).

On the surface, Gemini Man looks like a dumb '80s B-movie, but the film uses its absurd premise (and near-seamless doubling effects) to deliver some engaging character development.

Henry is shaken by the world of tension and violence he is pulled back into, and the clone comes to question his life and purpose in some poignant scenes of self-reflection and vulnerability.

However, when Henry and his clone finally talk about their history, Henry's attempt at

bonding falls flat, as he isn't developed enough for the character traits he describes to resonate with the audience.

Clive Owen has an intimidating presence and a very inconsistent Bronx accent as Henry's former boss, the catalyst for the film's events is half-baked, and the film pulls a generic final enemy almost out of nowhere for the climax. The film is also poorly-structured, diluting the suspense with sudden, easy jumps to new locations.

Exciting but uneven, the action sequences are well-choreographed, frenetic and feature impressive stunts and some arresting imagery, but some are shot clearly while others are jerky and hard to follow, and the gun battles are the slow weak-link.

Gemini Man has solid performances and a compelling core of clashing identities, but the action and plot are extremely erratic.

Yarra Junction dominates

By Anthony Sequeira This week's Strachan Shield saw Yarra Junction dominate Gruyere in the first of three T20 games to be held in coming weeks.

Batting first, Yarra Junction were unfortunate to lose both openers early credit to Gruyeres' M.Tilney (2/17) however, L.Horsfield and M.Malik helped guide the Eagles away from collapse.

Rotating the strike with clever singles, the pair put their side in a position to launch in the back-half of the innings.

When Malik lost his wicket, A.Cowan (45*) batted without the need to hold back on his attacking instincts.

Gruyere would not take another wicket as Yarra Junction arrived at a total of 151 with Lorsfield reaching his half-century in the final over of the innings.

Never really looking in the chase, Gruyere lost regular wickets throughout their innings.

In the end, it was a simple task for the experienced N.Bark (3/3) to clean up the tail and take Yarra Junction to an 86 run thumping of the Scorpions.

Fresh off wins last week, Healesville and Wandin were determined to show their strength and take top spot early in the season.

Batting first, the Bloods lacked significant contributions from the top order as Wandin kept the innings under control early.

Middle-order duo D.Senior (33) and A.Hamer (36) were again the shining lights of the innings as they fought off D.Thorne (2/8) and S.Falkingham (2/22).

The middle-lower order combining to keep the scoreboard ticking until the close of innings at 7/145.

After a dominant display with the bat last week, the Bulldogs would have known they are capable of chasing a total of this size with one large partnership.

However, Wandin batsmen were forced to take the harder path as the Healesville bowling attack took regular wickets.

Contributions from T.Thorne (33) and D.Thorne (30*) were matched by excellent bowling from J.Poynton (2/10).

But crucial late wickets were not enough as D.Thorne safely saw Wandin over the line.

Both RAFT Blue and Gold also had T20 matches this week, with a range of exciting power hitters taking centre stage.

Coldstream started well against Yarra Junction. Experienced C.Dikschei (50) was well

supported by young M.Pezzimenti (24) before the rest of the Crocs order contributed to take the total to 7/129.

Yarra Junction quickly set about starting their chase.

A score of 31 from M.Hammond was the main supporting act as a victory to Yarra Junction saw the Eagles take two from two in their doubleheader at home.

Healesville batted first against Wandin in the second match and was met by an early challenge from H.Lamont (3/27).

J.Cooper (38) and J.Betts (21) batted well early and lower order contributions saw the innings close at 7/136.

Wandin was always a little behind the re-

quired run rate and couldn't put a match-winning partnership together, to see the innings close at 8/119.

In the doubleheader at Woori Yallock, Woori batted first against Warburton.

The Tigers' lower order proved to be nothing more than a party popper. C.Darwall took 3/23 as the innings petered out to 9/139.

Once A. Nelson (41) was dismissed the Burras batsmen couldn't continue the momentum.

J.Sharp (25) the only other batsman to pass 15 as the Tigers' bowlers shared the wickets to take a 28 run victory.

After a loss in Round 1, Launching Place put on a dominant display against Marysville.

A rapid opening spell from J.Turner and T.Darkin put Marysville on the back foot early, before R.Christie (3/14) ripped through the middle order with only C. Piggot (33) standing up for the Devils.

It was a simple task for M.McConnell (3/10) to wrap up the innings for 75.

Getting off to a quick start C.Sharman dominated the opening partnership before being caught behind off C.Ronalds (1/16) for 17.

This would be the only wicket to fall as J.Turner (40*) and J.Birnie (21*) saw the chase to the end off just nine overs.

Young sports stepping up for athletics fun at Mt Evelyn

By Jamie Strudley It was a big turnout for Round 2 of Little Athletics at Morrison Reserve, Mt Evelyn on Saturday.

Impressive numbers in each age group made the atmosphere and experience fun for both athletes and parents.

There were plenty of excellent performances and efforts from all athletes as they strived to set the targets to beat for the next event.

Next week, is the Yarra Ranges Athletics Club's first 'Bring a Friend Day' so participants are encouraged to ask a neighbour or friend if they would like to come along for a trial.

The club's seniors travelled to Casey Fields and Doncaster for Round 2 of the AVSL Shield competition.

It was a special welcome to new members Meg Sparkes, Matisse Gardiner and Jordan White-Coath.

The Open women 4 x 200m record was broken at Casey Fields about 3pm with a team of Georgia Laven, Matisse Gardiner, Kathi Hewitson and Madeline Laven running 2.05.85.

It was then broken again by Ashleigh Rooke, Hayley Wilkins, Sarah Rollo, Ciara Willey running 2.00.53 at Doncaster about 4.30pm, which also broke the W18 record.

Long-time mates, John Hall and Ken Barratt did just that at the 9 October event, to blitz the field with a nett 57.75.

Custom-built for the road Halen Vans are builders of fully custom-built off-road caravans in Lilydale.

The company was established in 2011 when Jason Francis, after many years in the industry, together with two other partners, decided to go out on his own.

Jason, a mad Van Halen fan, decided that as a tribute to his idols the company name would have to be Halen Vans.

All Halen Vans are custom-built. Halen Vans works with its customer to come up with a design that suits their individual needs and customers are fully involved with the build process.

From when the chassis arrives, customers go in and speak to qualified cabinet mak-

ers about their design needs and cabinetry is made to suit.

All vans are fully off-road with choices of independent trailing arm or air bag's suspension, the latter being popular due to the fact you can level the van from left to right and up and down with the flick of a switch.

They are fully self-sufficient with solar panels and the choice of either lead crystal or lithium batteries.

Last year, Jason and his wife Bec took their van with four of their customers vans and did the Tanami Track, a heavily corrugated track between Alice Springs, NT, and Halls Creek, WA. The vans handled the conditions beautifully and also had the convenience of being able

to use all their appliances including the airconditioner without being plugged into power or using a generator.

The vans were equipped with solar panels and inverters to utilise the sun's energy to charge the batteries, therefore power was not an issue.

Halen Vans also does all servicing and repairs of all makes and models of vans.
