With temperatures set to soar above 30 degrees this week, Ms Williamson "we've got to work pretty fast so she doesn't get any more damage or dry out." A GoFundMe page has been set up to help raise $100,000 to remove items and prepare Rosie's tank.

The four-metre was lifted onto the back of a truck and driven down the Bass Highway - past a welcoming party on Kooweerup - en route to Crystal World on Thursday 21 February. It marks the end of a two-month campaign to have the animal relocated from the Bass site. The shark was originally captured in 1998 in the tuna fishing nets of South Australia. Crystal World IT manager Sharon Williamson, who is also from the Australian Animal Rescue, saw the plight of the shark and made contact with the owner. "They agreed to donate her to Crystal World so she can continue her preservation," she said. Ms Williamson said transporting Rosie was "a bit tedious" which also required the assistance of a crane before Rosie was shipped on the road.

A preserved Great White Shark that was left to decay in an abandoned aquarium in Bass has been rehomed in Devon Meadows. The two-tonne beast, dubbed Rosie has sat in her tank at the Wildlife Wonderland since the park was closed in 2012. Late last year, a You Tube video went viral of the forgotten shark, amassing millions of viewers. The clip unfortunately meant vandals and souvenir hunters trespassed into the private property where they smashed Rosie's tank and dumped rubbish. Fed up, Rosie's owner, Nick, decided to donate her to Tom Kapitany, owner of Crystal World and Prehistoric Journeys Exhibition Centre, free of charge.

A man has proposed to a Cranbourne woman in a way that has left her speechless - and one that has captured the community's heart. Chris Scholten took his partner Helen Cooper for a drive to the Dandenong Ranges after having dinner at Pine Grove Hotel in Upper Beaconsfield on Valentine's Day. "I thought it was a beautiful night; maybe there's a lookout up there or something like that we're heading to," Helen recalled. But as they came around the bend on Beaconsfield-Emerald Road towards Elephant Rock - a famous landmark in Emerald, Helen couldn't believe her eyes. Painted in big block writing across Elephant Rock was the proposal 'Marry Me Helen'. "I saw the rock and I was speechless. I wasn't sure, I thought maybe it's not me, then he pulled in I thought 'oh my god'," Helen said. Helen immediately said yes, adding "didn't
even have to think about it." "It was absolutely perfect...It was quite a surprise when I came around that bend," she said. "We haven't been going out for very long so it was quite shocked." The proposal went viral on Facebook days after Valentine's Day with many posting if Helen had actually said 'yes'. "I'm very overwhelmed. I've had so many lovely gestures and comments and everything on Facebook and it's just wonderful," she said. Helen says she visited Elephant Rock again and painted 'yes' next to the proposal. "I didn't realised there would be so much in the community about it so I thought I better go and let everyone know," she said. "Nobody had done anything over the top of it because they wanted to know what was going on. "I'm very humbled by everything that's been going on to be honest," she said.
A man and a teenager from Cranbourne have been charged with alleged mobile phone robberies. They are among four people to be charged by detectives from the Southern Metro Region Crime Team. It is believed that all the incidents are linked to buying or selling a mobile phone via an online market place. A 21-year-old from Cranbourne has been charged with two counts of robbery. He has been bailed to appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 17 May. A 17-year-old from Cranbourne has been released pending summons in relation to a robbery. A 20-year-old from Dandenong has been charged with two counts of robbery. He has been bailed to appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 17 May. An 18-year-old from Hobart, Tasmania was also interviewed by detectives. He has been charged with robbery and theft in relation to a number of incidents which have occurred over the past two weeks. Caught on camera Cranbourne Police are investigating theft of petrol from a service station in Cranbourne last week. Investigators have been told a man drove a Holden Commodore to the Narre Warren Cranbourne Road service station and pumped petrol into his vehicle just before 4.30am. The man drove away without paying for the fuel in the sedan, bearing stolen registration plates. Investigators have released images of a man who they believe may be able to assist with their enquiries. The man is described to be Caucasian and short with dark hair. He was wearing a black jumper with white brand logos on the chest and left arm, red shorts, black knee brace on his left knee and white socks with black thongs. Car thief wanted Cranbourne Police are investigating a theft from motor vehicle that occurred in Warneet on the 29 December last year. Police allege that between 2.40am and 3.15am two men smashed the driver's side window of the victim's silver 2010 Mitsubishi Colt that was parked in a car park on Rutherford Parade. The men stole a number of personal items. Police have released CCTV still images of a man and a vehicle that they believe may be able to assist with the investigation. A chiropractor from a Cranbourne clinic who disturbingly appeared to hold a baby upside down in a video has agreed to enter an undertaking which prevents him from working with children. It comes after shocking images surfaced on Facebook which appeared to show Dr Andrew Arnold manipulating the back of a two-week old using a spring-loaded device, and repeatedly tapping the bub's head. The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and the Chiropractic Board of Australia accepted an undertaking offered by Dr Arnold which will restrict his practice at the Cranbourne Family Chiropractic Clinic. Dr Arnold entered an agreement on 21 February not to treat children from birth to 12 years. This includes not publishing any material that relates to the assessment of children. In a statement, an AHPRA spokesperson said the Chiropractic Board of Australia accepted, as part of an interim action process by the Board, an undertaking offered by Dr Arnold. "This restricts the practitioner's practice, while AHPRA and the Board investigates," the spokesperson said. "An undertaking is legally binding. A breach of an undertaking may be the subject of regulatory action." "We are not able to comment any further about our investigation, because our processes must be fair, and the national law prevents us from commenting on any individual health practitioners or matters beyond what is on the public register." Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews de-
demn this practice as unprofessional and unacceptable, and AHPRA must act quickly to stop these rouge practitioners in their tracks." Victorian branch president of the Australian Medical Association (AMA) Julian Rait said studies have shown infant manipulation to be ineffective. "For a benign disorder like colic is, for people to be offering spinal manipulation is quite inappropriate. It's all risks and no benefits," he said. Mr Rait said in 2007 studies identified 14 cases of "direct adverse events" involving neurological musculoskeletal problems. "I don't think in this particular case the practitioner was particularly vigorous or likely causing harm but it's just the concept has been brought into question and so therefore you have to ask 'should anybody be offering spinal manipulation?' Royal Australian College of General Practitioners president Harry Nespolon said there was "absolutely no evidence" that spinal manipulation on a baby would help with colic or to settle babies, and advised parents to visit is their GP, not a chiropractor. "Babies experiencing symptoms such as colic are normal babies, and in most instances will simply grow out of it with no need for medical intervention," he said. "I would strongly recommend the chiropractic board to reconsider their stance on this practice being acceptable when there is no comprehensive evidence that it provides any benefit." Cranbourne Family Chiropractic Clinic did not wish to comment on the matter.

How long have you been a volunteer firefighter and why did you decide to join? I have just joined CFA Narre Warren North Brigade for nearly 12 months. I hoped to be more involved in the community in which I live, learn some skills, and spend my spare time more meaningfully. I am also really impressed and inspired by other members' decades of long services for CFA. What have been some incidents you have attended with the CFA that you will never forget? I have attended motor vehicle accidents, gas fire, car fires etc. Since I am relatively still a newbie, every incident is pretty much a valuable opportunity for me to gain more handson knowledge and experience. What is something people don't know about you? I have been secretly enjoying the Monday-$10discount movie tickets at a cinema close to my uni. I would spend some Monday late afternoons and evenings after uni on my own watching a couple of movies there. What is your most memorable moment? I have made it to my first ever strike team at Grantville bushfire earlier this year under the mentorship of brigade crews and leaders. Where did you grow up as a child? I grew up in Shanghai, and my parents and I moved here to Melbourne when I was 15. What is your favourite movie? Into the Wild (2007) If you were PM for a day, what would you do? I would try to work more on issues of men's mental health and family violence. What are you currently studying? I am studying Classics and Linguistics at Melbourne Uni while working as an interpreter. Favourite holiday spot in Australia? The Overland Track in Tasmania that I have just come back from is not bad at all! What's your favourite book? The Hunter, by Julia Leigh.

Works have begun on a new $20.8 million Clyde North East Primary School with Premier Daniel Andrews expressing his excitement during a visit to the site last week. Mr Andrews and Bass MP Jordan Crugnale joined students of Berwick Chase Primary School for the first sod turning on Friday 22 February to mark the start of construction at site on Calgary Way in Clyde North. The school, expected to be open in 2020, will include state-of-the-art classrooms, performing arts spaces and physical education centre with open play space, two learning centres, administration building, a specialist pavilion, sports fields, including multi-courts, and car parking. The site, which covers 35,000 square metres, will cater for 525 students from the fastgrowing Clyde North community. Mr Andrews said two primary schools and secondary school would be built in Clyde. "We're giving families across Pakenham, Clyde and Cranbourne the certainty that they will have a great local school, close to home," he said. "A brand new primary school for Clyde North East is more than an investment in buildings; it's an investment in our children's future in this fantastic community. "It's great for jobs, there's so many thousands of Victorians that are employed as part of the Victorian School Building program. It's about $3 billion worth of investment, so very significant," he added. Fine results By Brendan Rees A Lynbrook man has expressed his relief after getting out of parking fine on Kangan Drive in Berwick, where the signs have been labelled as "deceiving." Michael Drew was hit with a $161 parking infringement fine after parking his car in a no stopping zone on 13 December last year. However, Mr Drew argued he couldn't read the sign as it was covered by half a branch. So when he was slapped with a ticket by parking inspectors he decided to take photos of the unreadable sign as evidence. Last week, Mr Drew's infringement notice was withdrawn by Casey Council with a warning was issued instead. "I'm glad I got off but I tell you now there will be hundreds of people that have been affected by that branch," he said. "The reason why they let me off is because they don't want me to go to court and embarrass them." As it stands, the 'no stopping' restrictions operate from 7.30am - 9.30am and 2.30pm 4.30pm, Monday to Friday - which affects 38 parking bays. However, the parking signs also display a '2P' for all other hours of the day. Mr Drew says he initially called the council who "sent me a letter saying 'you just didn't read it.'" "They didn't look at the photo and then tell me I'm wrong. How can you read a sign if it's hidden by a branch?" "Everything is wrong down there and they're making all this money," he added. In response to the community outrage, council introduced new 'clearer' parking signs last month which display a no standing zone - but Mr Drew says they "are working to a certain extent." He said parking inspectors were targeting the vulnerable: "They go at the wrong time -

"How can make $150,000 in the school holidays. It would be morally right to open it up for those eight weeks over Christmas and school holidays." Peter Kennedy of Berwick was also hit with $161 parking fine in January after visiting his father at St John of God Hospital. "I knew it was school holidays but I just thought 2P - the big green and went 'okay'." "It just didn't click; I was thinking about other stuff. "I was right down near Clyde Road and thought I was miles away." He said the sign "wasn't parallel with the road either." According to Mr Kennedy, parking inspectors are having a "field day." "I got caught out but it's obviously catching a hell of a lot of people out."
By Brendan Rees A Cranbourne West tradie has been left without a livelihood after his van was stolen at the front of his home. Lisa said her husband, Nik, had lost an estimated $15,000 worth of tools which were in his van at time when it was allegedly stolen during the early hours of Sunday 17 February. Lisa, who asked not to publish her surname, said the van, a Toyota Townace was parked on the nature strip of Eminence Drive in Quarters Estate when it was taken about 2am, despite being locked. She said Nik, a carpenter, wasn't sure how he was going to make up the loss. "It's devastating. It's just gutted my husband. We're shocked by it, we still are," she said. "You rock up at a job site - you need tools otherwise they're really not going to have you there. "Work's been really quiet. He's trying to find work now.
"He's going to be using my car - then that affects me. I won't have a car," she added. The missing tools are a large range of Festool and Makita brands. The registration of the van is 1HR 2SE. To make matters worse Nik had only recently bought the van from a neighbour which he was still paying off and yet to be insure. "Now we've got no car, and we haven't paid him either," Lisa said. According to Lisa, CCTV from their neighbour appeared to show a "little car getting around" at the time of the theft. "Obviously they're targeting the car." Lisa said she was "kicking herself" as she generally heard noises from outside. "I always get up and check. During the morning you just don't hear anything." "We looked around the next morning, nothing (left behind)," she added. The couple have appealed on social media in the hope of anyone with information to contact police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Cranbourne police are investigating.

Battle bear wins hearts By Brendan Rees A Great War teddy bear has made a popular arrival at three primary schools in Casey thanks to the generosity of students at a Cranbourne North school. Intermediate VCAL students at Alkira Secondary College, which was a winner of the ANZAC Day Schools Awards last year, presented the bears to Hillsmeade, Tulliallan and Clyde Primary Schools on Monday 25 February. Dressed in the historic uniform of those who have served, Private Ernest Harvey, a Gallipoli Centenary teddy bear is designed to help children interact with the stories of the Centenary of Anzac.
The students from at Alkira Secondary College decided to buy the bears using their award money to assist with the Bears to School project. The project allows teachers to engage with young children about the Great War history in a way that accommodates the age and learning needs of the students, said Alkira Secondary College teacher Nicole Scott. Year 12 student Jade said presenting the ANZAC bear to Tulliallan Primary School was important in strengthening Alkira Secondary College's relationship and "builds a connection, so that we can help each other grow and learn in the years to come."

Murray Mandel has never let being deaf hold him back. The classical guitarist is on a three year busking tour with his next stop being Cranbourne North to raise funds for crisis support charity Lifeline. Mr Mandel's journey began in Canberra in March 2017 which has seen him travel around Australia in his campervan, and due to finish in Canberra in March 2020. The 64-year-old of Sydney who has profound hearing loss in both ears plans to visit 150 destinations which has attracted huge media attention. He will perform at Thompsons Parkway Shopping Centre on Thursday 28 February and Friday and Saturday 1-2 March. "Thompson's Parkway Shopping Centre is the second last shopping complex in Mel-
bourne before continuing my performances at Mornington then along the coast of Victoria towards the southern part of New South Wales," Mr Mandel said. The former microbiologist and Qigong/Tai Chi Instructor who is self-funding his trip says he is using every dollar raised to go towards Lifeline. "If I do in one or two years I know once I finish the tour, I will regret it for not taking more time to raise public awareness, reach out, and remind as many fellow Australians as possible about the importance of Lifeline," he said. "This tour is out of my sense of compassion. It is a very gruelling tour, lots of sacrifice, living in my campervan for three years but a real privilege indeed." For every performance at shopping centres, supermarkets, and markets, Mr Mandel plays for four to five hours, three to five times a week. So far, Mr Mandel's performances have helped raised $46, 921.90.

Run Poss Run set for relay By Brendan Rees The Casey Relay for Life is set to be one of the biggest yet, with a whopping $192,678.92 already raised for vital cancer research, prevention and support services. So far, 66 teams and 1,673 participants have enlisted to partake for this weekend's event at Akoonah Park in Berwick - marking a bumper year for the Cancer Council Australia. Relay provides an opportunity for the Casey community to recognise and celebrate cancer survivors, patients, their carers and families. Jan Gilchrist of the Merinda Park Learning and Community Centre in Cranbourne North, will honour her former colleague at the relay who lost her battle with lung cancer 10 years ago. "I had worked with her for over 10 years before she came to work for Merinda Park in our Childcare area," Ms Gilchrist said. "We decided as staff that we needed to do something to honour her life. So we set up our Relay for Life team and the rest is history." Now in their 10th year, the team 'Run Poss Run' which includes staff, committee members, family and friends are excited to have reached their goal of raising $10,000. "We have run two Bunnings barbecues and done many fundraising activities at the centre. Walking for Joel tops $5k By Brendan Rees More than 200 people turned out for a fundraiser walk at the Cranbourne Royal Botanic Gardens on Saturday 23 February. The annual walk hosted by the Jared Dunscombe Fund helped raised funds to provide an assistance dog for 28-year-old Joel Sardi who became a quadriplegic as a result of an accident. The walk is held in memory of Jared Dunscombe, a Cranbourne Rotary Club member whose life was tragically cut short at the age of 31 in 2013. Mr Dunscombe's sister Jonelle Colabufalo said Joel had previously applied to every organisation for a mobility assistance dog but their waiting lists were full and closed. "The Jared Dunscombe Fund raised $5,000 on Saturday to help Joel receive his assistance dog. Joel is so close to receiving his dog and this will happen within the next few months," she said. "We are now only just under our target of $35,000 with only $5,000 more to raise - we are so close to making this a reality." An assistance dog would help with dress-
ing, fetching a blanket, emergency alert bark, getting the phone and more. "We are so grateful to all those who came to the walk - and to those who couldn't make it but donated to our cause, we appreciate your support," Ms Colabufalo said. Rotary Club of Cranbourne also provided a barbecue for all participants at the end of the five-kilometre walk.Ms Colabufalo thanked The Royal Botanic Gardens Cranbourne. "It was a really great morning, such a positive energy around with the perfect weather, great turn out and wonderful venue." She added it was fantastic to have Joel and his partner Elisa present on the day as well as the Righteous Pups Australia team "There are so many others who contributed in their own way on Saturday and we count ourselves so lucky to have your support, thank you." Casey Councillor Geoff Ablett said: " I was very proud to participate knowing in the Walk To Remember knowing Jared and the Dunscombe family well, and to see how this walk will help Joel with his future is what champion people do"

Softball stalwart Elaine shines at Vic sports awards By Brendan Rees A dedication to softball has earned Elaine Duyvestyn of Cranbourne a prestigious Victorian Sports Award. In front of 500 people at Marvel Stadium, Ms Duyvestyn was awarded the Victorian State Government Service to Victorian Community Sport and Recreation at the Victorian Sport Awards on Wednesday 20 February. "I was surprised to be declared the winner as the other finalists were also worthy of such recognition," Ms Duyvestyn said. "Initially I was motivated by a small group of softball stalwarts who volunteered tirelessly to promote and develop our sport. She started her softball life with Wingers Softball Club based at Fawkner Park, South Yarra as a player and soon after coach. "My motivation has been driven by working alongside some amazing volunteers as we strive to provide opportunities for individuals, of all age and ability levels, to participate and achieve their goals, in our great sport," Ms cranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au
Duyvestyn said. Through her mentors, she quickly became involved taking on administrative roles in club, local association, being Melbourne and the state organisation, Softball Victoria. "Also around 1982 I was approached to assist in establishing a softball club in Cranbourne, where I was a new resident that would compete in the Berwick, now Casey, Softball Association," Ms Duyvestyn said, who has also dedicated 30 years as a volunteer in management with Clarendon Street Community Child Care Centre in Cranbourne. "I became a founding member of Cranbourne Softball Club holding positions of mentor and head coach." About two decades later she says she found her time too thinly spread and her commitments to the club "sadly ended to enable me to do more for Softball Victoria." "Cranbourne Club awarded me an honorary life membership and I am a life member of Wingers, Melbourne and Victoria."

A truly memorable night By Nick Creely This was no ordinary piece of silverware for all involved at St Brigid’s/St Louis. They’ve defied, stunned and brushed aside all those in their wake, no matter the opposition, in what had been a truly remarkable Twenty20 campaign for a club that is in the second tier of the Dandenong District Cricket Association. It’s now likely to be arguably the proudest moment in club history. The men from 'The Cave' ended their Dandenong District Twenty20 season with a stunning premiership, defeating yet another giant of the association last Wednesday night at Shepley Oval, Berwick - a side led by Matt Chasemore that has been one of the most consistent forces in Twenty20 cricket in the state, let alone the country. “It was a great campaign for the Twenty20 side - it was a great win, we beat all the big boys,” said proud club president Noel Fitzgibbon. “I’m very proud of the boys, they’ve done a sensational job, beating the big boys of the DDCA, to Springvale South, to Buckley (Ridges), and then Berwick, the state champions.” The club’s remarkable run towards the Twenty20 premiership started back on 24 October, ironically against Berwick, where they were absolutely thumped after a Nathan Pilon century, before bouncing back a few weeks later against Cranbourne. The third round saw them slump to a 1-2 record after a shock loss to Doveton, but evened the ledger with a comfortable victory over Springvale a week later. They then managed to scrape their way through to the quarter-finals with a strong win at home against Narre Warren. And that’s where things took a stunning turn. Severe underdogs, the men from the Cave met the powerhouse Springvale South away from home, but superbly defended 147 against a star-studded Bloods, setting up a crunch semi final against Buckley Ridges at Park Oval. The Bucks sent the ball whizzing the boundary to set the visitors a steep 195, but Vaib Deshpande had other ideas, blasting 104 as his side got home in the dying moments. It all came down to Wednesday’s grand final against the Bears - the third Turf 1 powerhouse in a row - at the home of the Dandenong Cricket Club. On a batting track that has seen plenty of runs this season, Chasemore’s side wasted little time and chose to bat, racking up 7/159 off their overs, with Matthew Hayes doing well with 2/33. But it was the great Nathan Pilon that once again shone, blasting 59 to cap off an extraordinary season with the white ball. As they have for the entirety of the tournament, they had their backs against the wall in the chase, with Deshpande and Jarrod Munday falling in the opening overs to leave them 2/8, with class acts Blade Baxter (2/27) and Brendan Rose (2/25) using all of their brilliance to immediately swing the game in the Bears’ favour. Mark Jamieson (32) and Liam Harris (19) fought hard to try and tick the scoreboard, but the Bears’ experience and class with the white ball saw them slump to 4/65 and in danger of the game slipping away.Enter Matthew Hayes, who played his best knock of the season ... ..and at just the right time. Hayes took the bowling on to great success, sending nine fours and a six to the boundary on his way to 65 - his highest score of the season - drawing the underdogs close. Fitzgibbon said the no one at his club will forget the moment the winning runs were scored - for a club that doesn’t demand the same attention as some of the powerhouses, these moments are made to savour. “It was one of the biggest wins the club’s ever had - the boys all play for each other, we’re a tight knit group, and they all played their part,” Fitzgibbon said. “We believed in ourselves, and our ability there’s been a few boys at the club that have been around for a long time, and they’ve been very good cricketers. “We had a squad of about 15 that all contributed and played their part, and we just didn’t fear anyone. We believed we could do it. “It’d be one of the better wins for this club - we were formed in 1954, we’ve won Turf 1 premierships, in the FDCA, BTCA, and for us to win this one, it’ll certainly be treasured.” Fitzgibbon said that the camaraderie and leadership in the side is second to none, and praised the players, who excelled under skipper Jeremy Heys this tournament. “Jeremy’s been a leader for a number of years, he’s our spiritual leader,” he said. “But they all play their part - there’s also a number of leaders, not just Jeremy. Pat Jamieson, Mark Jamieson, the boys that have been there for a long time, they just know what to do. “They’re all leaders themselves in their own right.”

Saints to host Turf 1 decider By Nick Creely The Dandenong District Cricket Association has announced the venues for this year's Turf grand finals, which will take place on 16 and 17 March before a standalone Turf 1 decider on 23 and 24 March. St Mary's home ground Carroll Reserve, located on Box Street in Dandenong, will host the standalone Turf 1 grand final for the second consecutive year, after an extremely successful fixture between Mordialloc and Springvale South in 2017/18. The four teams left in the premiership race with one round left to go in the home-and-away season are Springvale South, Berwick, Hallam Kalora Park and Buckley Ridges. Essendon reeled in Casey-South Melbourne's monster total on Saturday, in one of the most stunning run chases of recent memory. As the sun glistened on what was a phenomenal batting track, it was obvious from the outset that it would be tough work for the bowlers. Off the back of Luke Wells' epic 197 on day one, the Bombers needed a similar innings to chase down the mammoth 397 set, and it came in the form of the Englishman's counterpart former Victorian batsman and Dons skipper Aaron Ayre. Despite losing the destructive James Seymour early after Jackson Fry (2/88) managed to find the edge of the opening batsman, the Dons made the most of an incredible bowling track with very little demons for the batting side. In warm conditions, Ayre was simply sublime, cracking 26 boundaries and a maximum on his way to a sparkling century, combining for a 141-run stand with a more subdued Justin Galeotti (38) in the early part of the day. Ayre provided a reminder of his abundance of class, looking in cruise mood for the majority of his innings before accelerating at the right time to get his side in the position to push for the points. Unable to find regular breakthroughs - similar to the Bombers on day one - Ayre looked like posting a memorable double century that will almost certainly have him in the minds of Victorian selectors, but fell for 173 off 184 balls, once again to Fry. But the damage was done. Left-hander Michael Hill (109 not out) rammed home the advantage, capitalising on a tired Swans bowling outfit, belting a century, with Isaac Willett (41 not out) also providing some fireworks to see the visitors home within 83 overs and with seven wickets still left in the shed.

Bears make some noise By Nick Creely It took until the second last round of the homeand-away season, but the finalists to fight for the DDCA Turf 1 premiership are finally locked in. Springvale South, Buckley Ridges, Berwick and Hallam Kalora Park will all see finals action this season; however the final makeup of the top four is yet to be determined. It means, however, that Mordialloc are officially out of the race to defend their premiership after going down. Most of the attention of the round was down at Frawley Road, where Hallam set about the task of chasing the 200 set by Matt Chasemore's Berwick on day one. Despite steady openers Ben Hillard (11) and Leigh Booth (25) working hard to see off the new ball, a stunning over from spearhead Brendan Rose (2/15) got the visitors up and about. Snaring the edge of Hillard at the start of the over to give Nathan Pilon some catching practice behind the stumps, Rose removed Jagveer Hayer four balls later without scoring, immediately placing the home side under pressure on 2/20. It took another stunning purple patch, this time from Jack Phillips (3/20), to truly take the game away, snaring gun batsmen Jaime Brohier and Jordan Hammond within three balls of each other. Booth fought hard to stay at the crease, but his undoing, brought about by a sublime catch by Matt Robertson off Jarrod Goodes (1/5), meant it was only a matter of time before the Bears could rattle through the tail. mighty effort but ultimately fell short of hauling in a monster chase against Springvale South. Chasing 372 for victory after a Steve Spoljaric century on day one, the Maroons were rocked by two early wickets, but managed to steady the ship largely through the efforts of opener Austin Heldt (55) in the first session. But it was a stunning partnership between Akshay Ballal (112) and Shehan Fernando (74) brought the game back to life, with Ballal in particularly carving the ball to all parts on his way to his third century of the season. With just 10 overs left in the game, the Ma-
roons appeared to be in the box seat at 4/295, requiring a further 77 runs for victory at a tick under eight an over. But spinner Jarryd Straker - as he has all season - delivered at an opportune time, snaring 5/73 to see the home side bowled out for a brave 344 in the 79th over. Meanwhile, down at Ben Kavanagh Reserve, Mordialloc's season finals hopes came to an end at the hands of Buckley Ridges. The Bloodhounds appeared to be cruising in their chase of 273, with Brendan Morris (59) and Ian Daniel (81) compiling a brilliant 141run opening stand, with Daniel's strokeplay in
particular an absolute delight. But that's where the home side's momentum came to an end, with the pair removed within minutes of each other. The Bucks rattled through the middle order superbly, with Greg Todd (3/39) in fine touch yet again, and the home side fell short, bowled out for 231. And Heinz Southern Districts (134 and 1/34) defeated St Mary's (84), which means the final round clash against North Dandenong will see the loser drop down into Turf 2 next season.

Finals draw closer CRANBOURNE BOWLS Both top Saturday pennant and midweek pennant sides had a shocker this week losing, to Hampton Park and Doncaster respectively, but the news was a lot better for most of the remaining Cranbourne sides. The second side defeated Noble Park by 21 shots, the third side defeated Vermont South by 66 shots and the fourth side won by 12 shots over Pakenham. Side 1, Division 2: Skip Neil 'Buddy' Drummond and his rink played well again but went down by two shots, while skip Frank Byrne and his rink also lost by two shots but the other two rinks could not fire up against Hampton Park on a tricky green and in the end Cranbourne lost by 30 shots. Any faint hope of playing finals has now been extinguished for this year with one game remaining in the season. Cranbourne 68 (0 points) lost to Hampton Park 98. Side 2, Division 3: A 21 shot win for the team this week against Noble Park and skip Steve Hickson and his crew of Bill Bradbury, Brian Biasci and Stan Myers got the job done again with a win by 11 shots. Cranbourne 89 (16 points) defeated Noble Park 68. Side 3, Division 5: Everyone is mad about Harry! Well that would be Harry Van Soest and his crew of John Kent, David Brown and Scott De Piazza who won by a massive 30 shots and won the honour of being crowned best rink of the day. Cranbourne 113 (18 points) defeated Vermont South 47. Side 4, Division 7: Skip Rob Sorensen was back this week and his deputy Bill Sherriff and posse Brian Turton and Gwen Scott all had a great day winning by 21 shots and once again, justice prevailed in old Cranbourne town. Cranbourne 93 (13 points) defeated Pakenham 81.

Mid-week bowls Cranbourne Ladies Division 1: Cranbourne seem to be limping into finals contention with another loss, this time to bottom side Doncaster by nine shots despite two rinks winning and won rink losing. This week they play Glen Waverley at home in a must win final round match for the season. Winning assures Cranbourne a birth in the finals and having beaten every opposition team in the competition who knows how far they can go. But for now, they need to get back on the track and start winning again. Cranbourne Ladies 57 (4 points) lost to Doncaster 66.
