A SUMMER DAY IN WARBURTON

SPEND A FULL DAY OUT EXPLORING BY DEREK SCHLENNSTEDT

At the end of the line, Warburton is cocooned by magnificent mountains and nurtured by the iconic Yarra River that flows through it. Renowned for its historic buildings, picturesque walking tracks, cafes, boutique shops and cultural events, you’ll almost certainly find that one day is just enough to whet your appetite for a return visit! 9AM

Wander along the main street and settle in for a relaxing start to the day at one of the town’s popular cafes. If you love the sound of rushing water, seek out one of the several that have turned their main street facades into walk-throughs to a deck or garden to take in views of the Yarra River. The cafes offer a great choice of breakfast options that make the most of the fresh produce available. Whether it’s home-made bircher muesli, pancakes and strawberries or the big Aussie breakfast with all the trimmings, you’re off to a great start! 10AM

Time to explore, but first a bit of local knowledge from the good folk at the Visitor Information Centre. Check out the stunning mosaic stairs and ask about any special events, markets or festivals. Hire a bike, or just take a stroll along the Lilydale to Warburton Rail Trail. If you’re cycling, an hour’s ride will take you to Millgrove, even Wesburn and back. Alternatively, on foot head east and take in the River Walk, a circuit of the town that follows the river, crossing the town’s iconic bridges and meandering through a towering stand of Californian redwood. NOON

After a brisk walk or ride, it’s time to head back to town and a quick browse through some of the charming, bespoke shops

La La Falls out of Warburton are a spectacle in Summer.

before replenishing spent energy and treating the tastebuds with a delicious lunch. If it’s something more substantial you’re looking for, why not head along to the Alpine Retreat for a counter lunch. Alternatively, fish and chips on a grassy spot down by the river is a sublime experience on a warm day, or revisit one of the cafes for something lighter.

ESCAPE THE HEAT

Reporter Derek Schlennstedt took this snap of the beautiful Olinda Falls.

Leafy canopies and natural water sources abound in the Dandenong Ranges and Yarra Valley, providing the perfect escape from the summer heat. There are rivers and streams throughout the region, plus manmade pools, lakes and water parks where the whole family can take a dip for some relief from soaring temperatures. Of course, the aforementioned leafy canopies and lush forest and bushland do also pose a bushfire risk. Travellers and locals alike should keep an eye on www.cfa.vic.gov.au for fire danger ratings and warnings throughout the summer months. While you're beating the heat, take a picture! The Dandenong Ranges and Yarra Valley are among the country's most picturesque locations. The regions are renowned for photo-worthy scenery, activities, food and wine - the Instagram opportunities abound! So we'd like to see and share your best Insta-moments.

A SUMMER DAY IN WARBURTON

ALL THAT WARBURTON HAS TO OFFER rainforest where old growth mountain ash trees share an ancient ecosystem with myrtle beech trees - some 300 to 400 years old ferns, mosses and other plants that make up the deliciously damp and diverse rainforest environment. 3PM

You can either continue on to the summit of Mount Donna Buang with amazing photo opportunities for capturing this alpine environment in its naked beauty, and climb the tower for some great panoramic shots across the Yarra Valley, or head back down the mountain to see the La La waterfalls.Connect up with the Warburton Highway and follow the signs from Park Road (opposite the Sanitarium factory) along Old Warburton Road, to the start of the track on Irruka Road. La La Falls was named after past landowner Leila Ward, whose guesthouse La La (meaning Welcome Welcome), was located in the area. This very enjoyable walk allows a close-up look at the falls, one of the more beautiful sights in the Yarra State Forest. Pop in to the Warburton Information Centre for even more ideas on what to see and do around Warburton.

Take a camera, but also take time to just soak up the enchantment of it all. 6PM

2PM

One last chance to enjoy three of Warburton’s special treats before heading home. Pop into The Rainbow Ice Cream Shop for the flavour of your choice to enjoy as you marvel at Boinga Bob’s world-renowned arthouse, sitting on the mountain side above the town. Then, wander a little further for a potted history of the town and its people, depicted in a series of colourful murals along the old railway station platform ... before heading home. 12397107-RA50-18

Head out of town to experience the natural environment that first drew visitors to Warburton in horse-drawn carriages, and later on the train. These days, it’s horsepower of a different sort that takes visitors further afield. First stop, the Rainforest Gallery on the Donna Buang Road where a 40 metre long observation platform transports you into the rainforest canopy 15 metres above the ground. Below, a 350 metre long elevated walkway takes you through the

FLYING HIGH

AIRPORT CELEBRATES 50 YEARS BY MICHAEL DORAN

LILYDALE Airport is celebrating 50 years of continous operation. Entrepreneur and motor racing identity, Bib StilIwell, opened the business in 1968 to serve the Yarra Valley and Melbourne’s eastern suburbs. Neroli and Roger Merridew took over in 1982. “It was going broke and Roger, who was a keen flyer, wanted to find a way to keep it going, Neroli said. “When we took it over it was really just a small flying school and not much else. “Since then a lot has changed, and we now have five businesses operating here. “We have the flying school, air charters, vintage airways, skydiving and archery club. “The flying school has got a lot bigger and is now the main business of the airport. “There is a growing interest from people coming in wanting to get their private pilot licence and this is a perfect place to do that. Its location in Yering gives pilots quick access into the air with no tarmac delays. “An hour flying here is all in the air, not wasted on the ground, Neroli said. “We get a lot of people who want to learn at their own pace, who may not want to be professional pilots but just want to go solo. “There are the young ones still at school who think they want to get a career in aviation and start here to see how they like it. “Then there are the young, successful business types who have always had an interest in flying and now have the resources to pursue it. “And thirdly are the over-50s who have always thought about learning to fly but never had the time or money, but now they do.

Neroli and Jonathan Merridew at the airport.

Neroli said it had been satisfying to see this business develop and to take people on airtours to some of the most beautiful and remote places in Australia. “Yarra Valley Aviation, our air charter service, can fly anywhere in Australia at anytime,“ operations manager Jonathan Merridew said. “We have Pilatus PC-12 aircraft that can fly eight passengers to Sydney in just 90 minutes and go anywhere in Australia with just one stop.“ For those looking for a personalised experience, Yarra Valley Aviation has put together 10 of its most popular adventure packages. These include the Feel the G-force aerobatic experience for thrill seekers, wine tasting and lunch at Brown Brothers, King Island indulgences, or a mountain bike trek from Mount Beauty to Mount Hotham.

PICTURE THIS BALLOONING

PICTURE PERFECT VALLEY VIEWS Picture This Ballooning has been flying balloons in Australia and around the world for 23 years. Picture This is a family-owned business based in Ringwood and started out as an advertising company flying branded balloons throughout Australia. A few years later, the business had such a demand for passenger flights that they commenced flying regular passenger balloons while continuing their branded balloon flights. The company still flies branded balloons over Melbourne and the Yarra Valley, advertising large and small businesses. Through the culture set in place by Picture This CEO Damian Crock, a local resident, the company’s motto is to make every passenger experience one they will never forget. “For most people, a hot air balloon flight is something they will only do once and what better place than our own Yarra Valley,” Mr Crock said. “It’s obvious when you fly with our pilots that they love what they do, and they love sharing it with everyone on board.” Picture This pilots come from all over the world due to of their love of flying over the beautiful Australian countryside. Joining the team for the first time this summer is the current Hot Air Balloon World Champion from the UK, Domenic Bareford. “If you don’t know anything about competition hot air ballooning, we highly recommend looking it up, or even better, come on a flight and ask our pilots yourself,” Mr Crock said. “A number of our pilots have competed at World Championships, gaining huge experience for their ongoing flying.” An interesting fact about hot air balloons is they can’t steer - so to control their direction, they move up and down to use the wind, which usually travels in different directions at different altitudes. This allows pilots to choose launch and landing sites to suit the wind conditions on the day. “If you want to learn more about the technical side of ballooning, our post-flight breakfast is a perfect opportunity to ask our pilots everything you’ve wanted to know about how hot air balloons fly.

Trust us, they love talking about it!” Mr Crock said. For more information about Picture This Ballooning, phone 9429 0277 or visit www.picturethisballooning.com.au.

SUMMER IN THE YARRA VALLEY IF SOMEONE WAS VISITING THE YARRA VALLEY WHAT’S THE ONE THING THEY CAN’T MISS SEEING?

I always take people to the Yarra at Healesville or Warburton or along the Toolangi Sculpture Trail. Jamee Cousens, Healesville.

POUCH POTATOES SPRING means new beginnings and for Healesville Sanctuary, a display of the spring babies, but in summer you can see these spring babies come out from under those pesky pouches that keep them covered up. This summer is the perfect time to visit Healesville Sanctuary and see some pouch potatoes venture out from their warm and safe little sanctuary. Healesville Sanctuary recently celebrated the birth of an endangered Goodfellow’s tree kangaroo - the first ever to be born at the sanctuary. Mani and her breeding partner Bagam were successfully paired at the beginning of 2016 and after a routine pouch check earlier this year; keepers discovered Mani had a tiny joey growing in her pouch. The joey has already spent six months inside its mum’s pouch before tentatively poking its head out for the first time on a recent chilly winter’s morning and it’s expected to be hopping around its enclosure this summer. Keepers said that over the coming months, the youngster will continue to venture out of the pouch becoming more independent as it learns from its parents. The new addition has been welcomed by the wider conservation community with only 14 species of Tree Kangaroo recorded and most populations in decline. Mani, Bagam, and now their little joey is yet to be named but all are on display at the Kangaroo Country exhibit. A koala joey also started venturing from first-time-mum Hazel’s pouch in recent weeks. “When he was first born he was pink, hairless and tiny, koala keeper Kristy Eriksen said. “We watched him make his way from the birth canal to the pouch completely unaided, relying on his already well-developed senses of smell and touch and an innate sense of direction. Soon he will be riding on mum’s back and will eventually graduate to climbing trees on his own. He’s on display in the Koala Forest exhibit.

SUMMER IN THE YARRA VALLEY

FULL STEAM AHEAD IN HEALESVILLE

All aboard at the historic Healesville railway station.

Waiting for the rail motor.

12375854-EPJ15-18

STEAM trains will soon return to the Yarra Valley for the first time in 40 years. Both side of state politics pledged $3.75 million in funding to finish restoring the 14-kilometre Yarra Valley Railway between Yarra Glen and Healesville. Visitors will be able to ride an historic steam train between the towns, stopping at restored railway stations and historic work sheds, as well as wineries and a museum. The trains could carry up to 600 passengers and more than 250,000 visitors are expected to ride the tourist train each year. The railway would also connect to the Yarra Valley Rail Trail so cyclists could board the train at various points along the route. The first stage of the railway project is almost finished, including the restoration of station platforms, buildings and railway yards at Yarra Glen and Tarrawarra Railway Stations, 16 railway bridges and nine kilometres of track. The second and final stage would include redeveloping the historic Healesville Railway Station precinct and upgrading the remaining four kilometres of railway track and bridges from Healesville to Tarrawarra Estate. Yarra Valley Railway’s 1948 Walker Rail Motor pulls cosy carriages on Sundays, public holidays and Wednesdays during school holidays every hour from 10am to 4pm. The guard on duty welcomes travellers aboard and a traditional warning whistle sounds as the train approaches the rail crossing on its return trip from Healesville to Tunnel Hill, crossing the Watts River, motoring under the Donovan’s Road overbridge and passing through the historic (and reportedly, haunted) tunnel at Tarrawarra Winery. For young families, the railway-themed playground at the railway station is another attraction that will add to the day’s enjoyment. Group bookings can be arranged at any time on request. SUMMER IN THE YARRA VALLEY

YVFT FLYING HIGH IN COLDSTREAM YARRA Valley Flight Training (YVFT) in Coldstream has been part of the magnificent Yarra Valley for many years and has now received certification under the Civil Aviation Safety Authority of Australia’s (CASA) new flight training rules. “CASA has been updating aviation regulations, founder, MD and Chief Flying Instructor (CFI) of YVFT Bob Boyd said. “In September 2014, licensing and flight training were added to the ever-growing suite of rules. Pilots and flight training organisations (were) given until 31 August 2018 to transition to the new rules. “Flight crew licensing and flight training rules were previously in CAR 5 (Civil Aviation Regulation 5). The new licence rules are now in CASR (Civil Aviation Safety Regulation) part 61. The new flight training rules are now in CASR part 141 (and 142). Yarra Valley Flight Training has waited for the dust to settle allowing participants in the industry to gain some experience in the transition process before implementing our change. “Ian Ryan of YVFT has diligently spent several months writing the new YVFT operations manual to comply with Part 141and our flight

school has been granted its CASA Part 141 approval, enabling us to continue operating on a national aviation training level, Mr Boyd said. Recreational and private pilots’ licences, as well as aerobatics and formation flying qualifications, are the norm for the established flight school. Scholarships are available from the Australian Women’s Pilots Association for both men and women, which can be accessed via YVFT. “A great demand for pilot training in the Yarra Ranges adds to the myriad attractions and activities on offer in this picturesque region, Mr Boyd said. The remarkable team at Yarra Valley Flight Training (YVFT) is passionate about flying and teaching their pupils to become competent flyers. Yarra Valley Flight Training is located at 96 Killara Road in Coldstream. For more information, phone 9739 1406 or visit www.yvft.com.au.

SUMMER IN THE DANDENONG RANGES

WEEKENDS IN THE WOODS NOURISH BY DEREK SCHLENNSTEDT

IN today’s digital era of Twitter, Snapchat, Facebook and Instagram, it can be difficult to get away from the constant barrage of information. But the human spirit needs places where nature has not been rearranged by the hands of man; places away from Wi-Fi and reception, where the constant hum of traffic is replaced by rich bird calls and melodious crickets; where the sky meets the horizon and the night is filled with the spiralling streaks of the Milky Way and thousands of sparkling stars. There’s something about camping that nourishes and reinvigorates the soul. Sleeping under damp nylon and cooking on a small explosive device soothes the psyche like nothing else. It is lucky then, that there are many places around the Yarra Ranges that offer that release. Pitch a tent or park a campervan, there are many secret camp grounds to share with close friends in the picturesque Yarra Valley and the mountainous Dandenong Ranges. Delve into the Dandenong Ranges and camp around Emerald and Gembrook, at Wombat Corner near Emerald Lake Park, Kurth Kiln Park and in Bunyip State Park. Be sure to take a torch and spot the nocturnal possums, owls, bats and gliders that inhabit this forested region. Many of the camp sites feature electric barbecues, toilets, showers and fireplaces, so you can enjoy the creature comforts of home. In the Yarra Valley, campers are spoiled for choice, with locations in Warburton and the upper Yarra Valley offering crystalclear water to fish and swim in. Of course for those wanting the luxury of a roof over their head, there is always the option to upgrade to a caravan or cabin and sleep in close proximity to Steavenson Falls at Marysville Caravan and Holiday Park. A little outside of Marysville is a true campers’ delight, featuring a variety of walking tracks that offer the opportunity to climb high peaks and enjoy views of the forests and farmland in the valley below, the 3577 hectare park of the Cathedral Ranges offers you

I have visitors come from Germany and what I do is I take them to Ricketts Reserve, The Cuckoo for a bit of coffee, Grants Picnic Ground, then a guitar teacher who overlooks Puffing Billy, and then to the trestle bridge for a photo. After that, I take them to Cardinia Reservoir and finally on the way home I go past Mount Dandenong to see the sunset. Hubert Kupfer, Montrose. Touristnews

SUMMER IN THE DANDENONG RANGES

Picture: JOSH GRIFFITHS PLATYPUSSPOT

SPOTTING THE ELUSIVE PLATYPUS THE platypus is one of our most mysterious native animals. Parks Victoria has provided some tips for spotting the egg-laying mammal, also known as a monotreme. The echidna is the only other. Those who want to see a platypus in the wold will need lots of luck and the ability to be silent. Platypus are widespread in eastern Australia, but they are elusive. The best time to spot a platypus is dawn or dusk as this is when they hunt. But they can be spotted any time of day if their seekers are quiet enough.

Platypus are native only to Eastern Australia and Tasmania and are found in the waterways of the Yarra Ranges. Artworks have been created to raise awareness of platypus in the waterways, including murals at Belgrave and Warburton and sculptured rocks in Healesville. Platypus like to eat small crustaceans and water bugs. Their young lap up milk released through pores in the skin, rather than teats.

Wannabe spotters should take a good pair of binoculars and lots of patience.

The platypus is the world’s only venomous mammal. The males have spurs on their ankles which can inject poison.

Any waterway with reasonably clean water, overhanging banks covered with vegetation and surrounding trees can be home to a platypus.

Anyone who spots a platypus should log the sighting at www.platypusSPOT. org.

Experience the magic… Bring the family for a memorable day out onboard Puffing Billy and travel through the magnificent forests and fern gullies of the Dandenong Ranges.

Cafe culture Olinda is the perfect starting point for a walk through Sherbrooke Forest and it rewards visitors with not only spectacular views, but a pleasantly quiet and cathartic experience among the gumtrees. For such a relatively small area, there is a lot to see and do in this little pocket of cool, temperate rain forest and some incredible wildlife can be seen.

Whether it’s a leisurely breakfast cafestyle, a formal dining experience or the discovery of a new bakery, Olinda has it all. There are various coffee shops dappled throughout the little township, each offering a smattering of delicious treats and delights. Be sure to stop by the very hot-to-trot Only Mine Chocolaterie for some delicious chocolate treats or try some smashed avocado and coffee at Wagtime Cafe alongside your pooch.

MAKE IT A DOG-FRIENDLY DAY OUT Fur parents who find it had to leave their babies at home can find plenty of pooch-friendly destinations in the Dandenongs. Visit Victoria found that 65 per cent of Victorians were pet owners and that people took more photos of their dogs than their holidays, themselves or food. In mid-October, Visit Victoria kicked off a digital media campaign promoting dog-friendly travel. Olinda recently became home to Wagtime Cafe, where dogs can dine alongside their owners. It serves a vegetarian menu for the health conscious and animal lovers, plus treats just for dogs. There are doggy beds and water bowls for pampered pups, plus toys and more to buy and take home. Also in Olinda is Leddicott Cottage, just a short walk from the town’s restaurants, pubs and shops. Dogs are welcomed with open arms and there are complimentary dog treats on-hand. Just up the road in Sherbrooke is the Alfred Nicholas Memorial Gardens. Good dogs on a lead are welcome at the historic garden, where the paths are surrounded by lush green ferns, azaleas, towering mountain ash and maples. Just a short drive away in the Yarra Valley, Yering Station has lawn and space for dogs and their families to stretch the legs, and De Bortoli Yarra Valley Estate has a dog-friendly picnic space. The Maddens Rise and Punt Road wineries welcome pooches, and Hanrahan Vineyard even has a vineyard dog to play with, Otis. Healesville Hotel has plenty of space for four-legged friends in the back garden, and Maroondah Reservoir Park has walking tracks, flowers, birdlife and picnic areas to explore. Wiggley Bottom Farm in Badger Creek offers luxe, pet-friendly accommodation. The Yarra Ranges is also home to many off-leash dog parks. Check www. yarraranges.vic.gov.au for locations.

PUPPETS AND TOYS OF THE WORLD

12402175-49-18

SET in the picturesque Dandenong Ranges, Geppetto’s Workshop is known as that iconic and experiential “toy store on the mountain”. The stores are fantasy and European themed and stock the very best toys from over 30 countries. Geppetto’s Workshop is renowned for keeping Australia’s largest range of exotic European marionettes and hand puppets with over 400 character and animal puppets in stock across their two stores. Their staff are trained specialists in traditional and wooden toys making a visit to Geppetto’s Workshop a genuinely magical experience. Visitors are welcome to try the hand-carved marionettes and be shown how to make them dance and walk with help from experienced staff. Geppetto’s Workshop is essentially a curated toy and puppet store, much like a gallery where every item has been chosen carefully to deliver quality, value, durability and experience. Most importantly, the team look for toys that will last and can ideally be handed down and repaired over the life of the toy. Ideally, as a toy ages, its value increases as the children mature and memories are made. They attempt to supply toys that people will retain for life; the ones they keep for their own children. The vast range of toys, puppets and collectibles includes genuine Russian matryoshka (nesting dolls), vintage Japanese Kokeshi, French timber building blocks, Ukrainian terracotta building sets, Ravenburger puzzles, English Charlie Bears, German Clemens Bears, Spanish Miniland vinyl dolls, German Bruder vehicles and the finest Little Gems fairy dresses. Categories include puppetry, dress-ups, snow globes, music boxes, educational toys, tin toys, jack-in-the-boxes, kaleidoscopes, games, puzzles, construction, nursery, bath/beach/sandpit toys and novelties ... yes, they keep slimes, goos, putties and whoopee cushions as well. The two Geppetto’s Workshop stores are located at 371 Mount Dandenong Tourist Road in Sassafras and 25 Olinda-Monbulk Road in Olinda. DISCOVER A LILY PAD WONDERLAND

12395353-RC50-18

YARRA Junction's Blue Lotus Water Garden is holding its annual Lotus Flower Season event, which runs daily from 27 December 2018 to late April 2019. Each summer the gardens transform into a wonderland of lotus flowers and tropical blooms spread over 50,000 square meters of landscaped grounds. Visitors will experience stunning lakes, spectacular fountains, amazing plant exhibits and some of the most breathtaking scenery the Yarra Valley has to offer. A must see is the amazing 'Giants of the Amazon.' These massive waterlilies are among the biggest plants on earth. The leaves (lily pads) are expected to reach a massive 1.5 to 2 metres in diameter so big they can even support the weight of a child! This year the team has been busy planting tens of thousands of new perennials around the lakes and ponds, creating a kaleidoscope of colour as you wander around. One of the new features is the world of flowering hanging baskets, now decorating most of the shelters and picnic huts. There's also plenty on offer for families with little ones. The magical Fairy Garden has doubled in size with more attractions and play areas (including a mystical wishing well!) The flower Fairy Queen also makes an appearance on weekends and public holidays, holding story time in the fairy garden and offering face painting for a small fee. Kids will love the new adventure activity which takes them on a journey of discovery through the garden to find Fantasy Falls - but they have to traverse through the Belly of the Dragon to get there! The Blue Lotus Water Garden also has fantastic picnic and barbecue facilities - including a brand-new lakeside picnic area. Alternatively, there's a fabulous alfresco cafe located just inside the gardens with stunning views of waterlily flowers. Plus, there's a garden kiosk that sells scooped ice cream! The Blue Lotus Water Garden is located at 2628 Warburton Highway in Yarra Junction. For more information, open times and ticket prices, visit the website www.bluelotus.com.au or call 5967 2061.

THE ROAD TRIP LOOP WITH SIGHTS BY DEREK SCHLENNSTEDT

SET out on a summer road trip from Melbourne to the nearby Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges region and find inspiration at every turn.

Sample internationally recognised wines at historic wineries and follow well-marked routes to magical forests and ornamental gardens. Stop off at farms and dairies selling fresh produce and gourmet treats, and savour seasonal dishes in cosy cafes and esteemed restaurants. Among the most well-known and enjoyable trips is the drive through the Black Spur that cuts through the lush forest landscapes of the Yarra Ranges, linking the Yarra Valley with the mountain areas around Marysville. Famous for its towering trees and spectacular valley views, the Black Spur connects Healesville with Narbethong on the Maroondah Highway as it winds its way up the Great Dividing Range. Lower the windows and savour the fragrance of the Australian bush as you pass through the forest. Gaze up at the immense mountain ash trees, which scatter the sunlight on the cool understorey of green ferns below. At the base of the Black Spur you will find Fernshaw picnic area with rest facilities and you can also use the picnic facilities at Dom Dom in Marysville State Forest. At Marysville, you can stop off at Steavenson Falls and take an easy stroll to one of Victoria’s highest waterfalls, which drop 84 metres into the Steavenson River Valley. Cool off in the spray and then head on to Lake Mountain for some refreshing and cool mountain air, before looping back towards Warburton via Cumberland Junction. There, you turn right onto Warburton-Woods Point Road, where drivers are faced with the beautiful Reefton Spur. With a 95 per cent corner ratio along its 19-kilometre length and a combination of medium-paced tight corners, quiet roads and

Lush tree ferns line the roads in the Yarra Ranges. 178237

stunning views, Reefton Spur is one of the most infamous roads in Australia. The spur is a legendary patch of road that has become a go-to destination for car enthusiasts and motorcycle riders and offers beautiful views of the Warburton Ranges. Be sure, though, to watch for wildlife close to the road. From there it’s straight to the homely village of Warburton where you may be tempted to drop into one of the excellent cafes for an afternoon snack or take a dip in the pitcturesque water of the Yarra River, which flows next to it. Don’t forget to stop at the Redwood Forest along Cement Creek Road for that Insta-worthy photo. From Warburton it’s just a hop, skip and a jump down to Lilydale along the Warburton Highway. Summer is a magnificent time to travel through the forests of the Yarra Ranges, with cool mountain air the perfect escape for a hot day, but be sure to check the fire danger rating and keep informed by tuning in to the emergency radio.

WINE COUNTRY

Q&A WITH CATHY FROM SUTHERLAND On high ground at the southern edge of the Great Divide sits the cathedralceilinged cellar door of Sutherland Estate. The boutique, family-owned winery at Dixon’s Creek incudes about 10 acres planted with various wine grape varieties - chardonnay, pinot noir, cabernet sauvignon, shiraz, gewürztraminer and tempranillo. How long have you been in the industry? We’ve been making wine for 18 years. I’ve personally been enjoying wine for many years. Fortunately, my previous career allowed me to travel and by visiting wine regions around the world I caught the bug! How did you get involved with Sutherland? We started Sutherland Estate virtually from scratch. We spent some time looking for the sort of property that was capable of growing high-quality wine grapes and was also a beautiful place that would be rewarding to work on and have people visit. We looked in several regions but it was always going to be in the gorgeous Yarra Valley. We were lucky to find a spectacular property that had a small but established vineyard and huge potential. Tell us about the wines produced at Sutherland - what sets you apart? We use only estate-grown grapes, which means that we are the custodians of the fruit from budburst to harvesting. Our wines are true to their varietals - no blending - which means they amount to a true expression of both the variety and our special piece of dirt. We especially enjoy working with our rarer-known varieties of gewurztraminer and tempranillo. Which one’s your personal favourite and why? Tempranillo. It appears to thrive on the site and produces an intriguing wine of savoury, dark fruits and lingering tannins. As part of our constant exploring, we have produced a sparkling tempranillo which has proved to be a crowd favourite. The Sutherland Estate building is striking - what’s its story? My Dad was given free rein with the design.

Cathy with Rosie.

Given the views it was always going to have enormous windows. We wanted something individualistic, dramatic and beautiful. He nailed it! How important is it for Yarra Valley wineries to do more than just produce wine? It would be possible to produce wine in a sterile, soulless factory, but visitors are going to learn more and have a greater appreciation of both the wine making process and the finished wines themselves if they can stand on the dirt where the grapes are grown and talk to the people who actually make the wine. It will be a far more satisfying and rounded experience for them. We let out one of our romantic towers, which gives visitors the chance to immerse themselves in the most beautiful of rural settings. What makes for a memorable Yarra Valley dining experience? Sympathetically paired food and wine, coupled with the right setting. We offer cheese platters and our front deck! You’ve invited friends for a picnic lunch in a Yarra Ranges park. Which wine do you take along? A bottle of our 2012 sparkling pinot noir chardonnay - a labour of love from our side which never fails to deliver pleasure. That is, after all, what wine is all about.

Sutherland Estate has one of the most spectacular vineyard sites in Australia.

WINE COUNTRY

OUR YARRA VALLEY WINE AWARD THE Yarra Valley scooped the pool at several spring award presentations for wine. Domaine Chandon’s chandon brut (non-vintage) was crowned Best Australian Sparkling Wine at the Champagne and Sparkling Wine World Championships (CSWWC) in London. “It is a rarity in wine shows for a non-vintage sparkling to take a trophy,” Chandon senior winemaker Dan Buckle said. “So, this is not only incredible news for us but also for people who want to drink Australian sparkling wine that is both affordable and high quality.” Competition founder and judge Tom Stevenson said: “It says a lot about Chandon Australia that its entry-level wine has the corequality to beat the cream of Australia’s sparkling wine and win the National Trophy.” The Australian Sparkling Wine Show judges tasted 140 entries from across the country at the Black Spur Inn in Narbethong. Broken Back Wine’s La Thirsty Wombat received a bronze and on points pipped some of the biggest sparkling wine producers in the country. The 2017 Willow Lake Vineyard Chardonnay from A Rodda Wines won the Langton’s James Halliday Chardonnay Challenge with 97 out of 100 points. Adrian Rodda produced the wine with grapes grown on the Upper Yarra Valley Willowlake Vineyard near Gladysdale and topped 543 other chardonnay. “This result, first and foremost, is a testament to the Willowlake Vineyard and the hard work of viticulturist Tim Wray and his crew to grow such high quality chardonnay,” Mr Rodda said. At the 20th National Cool Climate Wine Show, Santolin Wines and their Cosa Nostra 2017 Pinot Noir Syrah took out the Champion Dry Red Blends and Varietals Trophy. Giant Steps Wine was a big winner at the Yarra Valley Wine Show Trophy Presentation Dinner.

Giant Steps head winemaker Steve Flamsteed. Rochford Wines hosted more than 200 guests at the Langton’s event in September. Healesville’s Giant Steps received six trophies including Most Successful Exhibitor.

Sandra DePury accepted the inaugural Langton’s Wines of Provenance Trophy for her entry of Yeringberg Cabernet Blend from 2005, 2008 and 2015. Ray Guerin, an inspirational Yarra Valley based viticulturist, was inducted into the Yarra Valley Wine Growers Association Hall of Fame for his dedication and visionary work to the industry and region. The Vineyard of the Year was awarded to Gruyere’s Thousand Candles, where Stuart Proud has a clear philosophy for vineyard management that aims for both sustainable and quality production. Ray Guerin at his induction.

RAY’S IN THE HALL Ray Guerin was inducted to the Yarra Valley Hall of Fame at the Langton’s Yarra Valley Wine Show in September. Ray’s father owned a small vineyard and used to take his son out of class early to teach him to prune vines, but Ray started his working career as a cabinet maker. After many years of hard work on his own vineyard in McLaren Vale, Ray was approached about planting a high-end sparkling wine vineyard in marginally high altitudes and southern slopes in the Yarra Valley. The project was visionary and went on to include a further 100 acres in Beenak’s red soils. BRL Hardy took on the project in the early ‘90s with Ray heading viticulture management. It produced what Gourmet Wine Traveller’s 2016 Winemaker of the Year, Steve Flamsteed, described as ‘wines of almost cult status’. In 2013 he received the Gourmet Wine Traveller Magazine’s Viticulturist of the Year award. Renowned sparkling winemaker Ed Carr said Ray had so often been at the cutting edge and turned it into success, but “maintained his great humanity and understanding of the needs of the grape growing community.

STONE FRUIT AND MORE IN SEASON NOTHING says summer quite like biting into a sweet, juicy nectarine. Peaches, apricots, plums - they’re all in season in the Yarra Valley during the summer months. Also ripe and ready for the picking during December and January are cherries. Visitors can even take up the opportunity to pick their own cherries at several Yarra Valley orchards. Blackberries, blueberries and raspberries are also at their best during summer in the valley. Other fruits in season include grapes, honeydew melon, rockmelon, watermelon and Valencia oranges.

KOOKABERRY Berry Farm is a family run business, having grown enough gorgeous berries for 40 years to tickle anyone’s fancy. Guests of Kookaberry are invited to enjoy fresh or frozen strawberries, blackberries, boysenberries, raspberries, and of course, the jams from the farm gate. Kookaberry products are 100 percent Australian grown and made with no preservatives, additives or artificial colours. All jams, syrups and vinegars are made using berries grown on the farm. This creation of these products began 15 years ago when Kookaberry owner Tony decided to come up with an idea utilising the not so marketable berries. This idea transformed into the production of gourmet, handmade and award-winning jams, syrups, sauces and vinegars. The Kookaberry jams and syrups have won gold and silver awards

FINDING WARBURTON’S OLDEST FISH BY MICHAEL DORAN

Three hundred and fifty million years ago, two little fishes were swimming happily in the area where Mansfield quarry now sits. Those same fish have now moved to Warburton and are fossilised in rocks used to create the wharf precinct. It is believed the fossils were first seen by Dr. Peter Sorensen Ward whilst listening to the sounds from the River Folk Festival. Dr. Ward, now living in Finland but whose parents live in Big Pats Creek, alerted friend David Borton, a retired geologist from Warburton. “I’ve known about it for nearly a year now and apart from showing it to Ivor and a few others, I would say, as a general rule, almost nobody knows they exist,” said David Borton. Ivor Wolstencroft, local retired vet, says that although the fossils are rare, it’s important that people get to know about them. “Locals get really excited when they hear about this,” he said. “You almost need a personal guide to find them,” he said. “I went up and down the wharf and couldn’t find any sign of them.” “It will be really nice for people to come up here and find them by themselves, a bit like fossicking for gold.” The rocks comprise river and lake mudstones, siltstones and sandstones of the Lower Carboniferous Mansfield Group. There are obvious ripple marks and mud cracks on many of the rocks but the fossils are not as easy to spot. “I spoke to Peter and we are both comfortable to tell the world about this find. There are ripple marks, mud cracks that are easy to spot but then there are the fossils,” Mr. Borton said. “People will have the joy of coming down here and looking for and maybe discovering the fossils for themselves. That makes it an adventure, rather than just going to a sign-posted rock and seeing them.” The rocks were brought in from the Mansfield Quarry and David Borton was able to trace them back to the area where fossils of this type have been discovered previously. “I contacted Jim Childs from the Yarra Ranges council who helped me confirm the rocks were from Mansfield. I contacted the quarry who confirmed that they did supply the rocks and that is how we know the history of these fossils.” “This is a great find and we are all really excited about sharing it with our community and anyone else who is interested in visiting Warburton on their own voyage of discovery,” David said. bridges to cross, five sets of swings (including a birds nest), tunnels to explore, spiral and tunnel slides to slip down, climbing walls, distorting mirrors, musical cylinders, and for the thrill seekers there are flying foxes, monkey bars and much more. The park is based on the book of the same name written and beautifully illustrated by Australian author and wildlife artist, Garry Fleming. Bollygum is the story of a little possum who is taken from her warm and comfortable ‘roof’ home in the city and let loose in the dark and unfamiliar forest of Bollygum. Frightened and all alone, she is befriended by wombat and his friends who help her find her way back to her family. The Bollygum Community Market is held from 10am to 2pm on the second Sunday of the month (from September to May) in the awardwinning children’s park, ‘Bollygum’ (40 Whittlesea-Kinglake Road, Kinglake). CLASSIC CARS ON SHOW IN SUMMER BY DEREK SCHLENNSTEDT

The Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges have plenty of horsepower to get engines revving over summer. If the glint of sunlight hitting the chrome of a classic Chrysler makes your heart skip a beat, or the rumble of a magnificent old Indian makes you want to take to the road, you’ll be in your element at any one of the region’s popular summer car shows. Car and bike shows, along with car club rallies, bring thousands of people into the region each summer and while there’s a lot of under-the-bonnet turbo-gazing, spit and polish, and swapping stories of piston passion, at these events you don’t have to be a petrol-head. Of the many shows around the ranges, the Wandin Rotary Custom Car and Bike Show is a fantastic showcase of some of the very best custom and classic vehicles. It’s only a $5 entry fee for vehicles and a gold coin donation for general entry with proceeds going to The Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal. Shows will be held on 19 December, 16 January , 20 February and 20 March at the Wandin East Reserve. A poignant reminder of the devastating fires that hit Victoria in 2009, the Black Saturday Remembrance Cruise from Lilydale to Healesville Railway is a remembrance event to reflect and come together. This summer’s event will mark 10 years since the fires, and car enthusiasts will unite on 9 February 2019 to reflect and remember those who died in the Black Saturday bushfires. In previous years the cruise has attracted more than 800 cars. The cruise starts at the Industrial Park Car Park in Lilydale and proceeds through towns affected by the fires, finishing at the Healesville railway precinct. Touristnews
