Honouring their sacrifice By Brendan Rees Hundreds stood in silence at the Cranbourne Cenotaph to honour those who made the ultimate sacrifice 100 years ago on Remembrance Day. This year held a special significance as it marked the Armistice that ended the First World War in 1918. The crowd fell silent in their thoughts at 11am on Sunday 11 November which was followed by an Air Force flyover. The service featured a wreath-laying ceremony by community groups, dignitaries and school children. Senior vice-president of the Dandenong Cranbourne RSL Bill Shepherd led the service which included guests Federal Member for Holt Anthony Byrne and City of Casey Mayor Amanda Stapledon. Image of terror A horrific knife attack of a security guard from Hampton Park has been captured on CCTV during Melbourne's Bourke Street terror attack on Friday 9 November. The shocking footage shows a man identified as Hassan Khalif Shire Ali brandishing a knife and launching at the 24-year-old SecureCorp guard as he stood at the front of a shopping centre. The security guard can be seen using a radio as he looks to his left on Bourke Street, before Shire Ali runs towards him on his right wielding the knife. At that moment, Shire Ali launches the knife at the security guard as he helplessly tries to defend himself by raising his arms. The disturbing footage last a few seconds

"The officer was hurt in the line of duty and has received medical care as well as support for himself and his family through our Employee Assistance Program," a statement from SecureCorp said. It's alleged as police officers got out of their vehicle, they were confronted by a male who began a physical altercation with them. The man allegedly fled on foot and was chased by police; he then lunged at police with a knife. "Police shot the 30-year-old and he was taken to hospital in a critical condition but he has since died," a Victoria Police spokesperson said. Counter Terrorism Command in conjunction with the Homicide Squad will investigate the incident but police do not perceive any ongoing threats at this stage.

Despite being eight years old, Julian Chua can outpace those entering high school when it comes to maths and English. Julian, who is in Year 2 in primary school, comfortably studies Kumon Maths and English at the Year 8 level. In Kumon Maths, Julian is tackling inequalities and in English he studying extracts of The War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells. He is enrolled at Kumon Hampton Park Education Centre. Kumon is an individualised maths and English tuition program where children study at their own pace. Advanced students' abilities are adequately stretched and those who may be struggling are given the time they need to consolidate their learning. "So long as a child continues to enjoy and love learning I don't believe there should be a limit on it", says Angel Chua, Julian's mother. As Julian is so far ahead, he has been invited to the upcoming Advanced Student Forum, which will be held at the Melbourne Park Function Centre on Sunday 11 November. Under the theme of 'Celebrating tomorrow's problem solvers' this event commemorates the achievements progressed through Kumon to five years ahead of their school grade level and of those who've completed a Kumon Programme. Attendees will hear from Lily Serna, a renowned Australian mathematician and television presenter. Julian says he feels proud of being five years ahead in Kumon and of being invited to the upcoming forum. "I've never been this far ahead in Kumon

With the election polls favouring Labor for a win, Mr Howard said: "I've seen polls being defied before, happens a lot." He added he was bothered that the Labor State Government was union dominated. "Now, I've got nothing against unions as such but I've got a lot against union domination ... there's no doubt that Andrews is suborned by the union movement," he said. Ms Hermans said it was fantastic for Mr Howard to visit. "It was awesome to have John Howard out here, he's one of the most love Prime Minister's in the history of Australia." Ms Fitzgerald also said it was "great to have that level of support from such a statesman."

Stalwart of community dies By Brendan Rees Tributes have flowed after one of Cranbourne biggest advocates, Elizabeth (Bette) Clydesdale, died aged 87. Born on 19 June 1931, the youngest of four, to her parents Mabel and William Rose in East Malvern who built and ran a dairy in East Malvern called Cranbourne Dairy. Bette attended Lloyd Street Central School and then MLC where she was House Sports Captain, played netball, competed in athletics and loved playing baseball. After school, Bette and her sister Gwen worked at Harris and Horne, Chartered Accountants where Bette was described as "conscientious, willing and anxious to do good work." When she turned 18, Bette began dating "the boy across the road" named Greg Clydesdale. Upon turning 21 on 19 of June, the couple

married on 9 August 1952 before they moved to Geelong and had two children, Robyn and Cheryl. The family moved to Cranbourne after Greg was offered a job as a shire engineer where Greg Clydesdale Square would be later honoured in his name. Bette and Greg had two more children while in Cranbourne, Ian and Karen. Cheryl said family was always Bette's number on priority: "She was a wonderful home manager, always there for us and provided us with a happy and loving home in Cranbourne." "She embraced the Cranbourne community. She was involved, on so many levels, with organisations and clubs. She was president of Cranbourne Netball Club and Tennis Club, a Girl Guide Commissioner, involved in the kindergarten, mother's club, Rotary Inner Wheel, Amstel Golf Club, Neighbourhood House and later on the computer club," she said. In the last 13 years of her life, Bette battled Parkinson's disease but continued to live her

Former Prime Minister John Howard received a hero's welcome as he walked through Westfield Fountain Gate Shopping Centre in Narre Warren on Friday 9 November. Shoppers were left star struck as hundreds of people gathered around Mr Howard who joined Opposition Leader Matthew Guy in helping him with his campaign ahead of this month's state election. Mr Guy held his wife Renae's hand as he toured the shopping centre with Mr Howard, flanked by the Liberal candidate for Narre Warren North Vikki Fitzgerald, Liberal candidate for Narre Warren South Susan Serey, and the Liberal candidate for Cranbourne Ann-Marie Hermans. Dressed in a pinstripe navy blue suit, and a navy and white tie, complete with a poppy on his jacket, Mr Howard was beaming with a smile, as he spent about 30 minutes wandering through the shopping centre, taking selfies and shaking hands with everyone from to shoppers, bystanders and staff - leaving a smile on many faces. "Good to see you, how's business? Mr Howard said as he passed shopkeepers. "It'll be even better when Matthew Guy becomes the Premier." How long have you been with St John's Anglican church and what have been some of your goals with the community? I will have been at St John's for ten years just before Christmas this year, but plan to finish in the middle of next year, when I shall be 65. One of my goals has been to build St John's in terms of attendances and in terms of its crosscultural diversity, and this has been wonderfully achieved.

Plan your night Take take your ID, phone and enough money for transport and food. Make sure you have safe transport to and from the venue before leaving. Nominate a designated driver if necessary. Tell friends or family where you are going and when you will be home. Keep them updated.

Drink slowly and drink water throughout the night. Never mix alcohol and drugs. If you can't remember how many drinks you've had, it's time to slow down.

Take care of your friends Stop your friends from getting into fights. Walk away from dangerous or conflict situations and take your friends with you. Don't leave friends alone with somebody they've just met. Recognise when a friend has had too much to drink. Never leave someone who is drunk or passed out - get them immediate medical help.

What was your most memorable moment? This would be the Christmas services in 2013, when we used our wonderful new church and education centre facilities for the first time. What is something people don't know about you? I can wiggle my ears. What is your favourite movie? Picnic at Hanging Rock. If you were PM for a day, what would you do? Be very sorry for myself, ask everyone to pray hard, and do what I thought was right rather than what the polls told me would get me reelected. At school I... I couldn't wait to leave. If the question is "At school I couldn't wait to leave because ... ", my answer would be I wanted to be in charge of my own time and activities. Favourite holiday spot in Australia? Noosa Heads.

What's your favourite book?

Where did you grow up as a child? Tanganyika (E Africa) then Brighton Victoria.

The Bible (it really is fascinating - the more you study it the more there is to discover).

Best concert you have been to? It would have to be one of the MSO concerts at Hamer Hall, and I hope that the MSO will start coming to Bunjil Place soon.

It's time to lace up your Santa boots and join the Gethsemane Church for a walk to help fundraise their Clyde Carols Candlelight event. Senior Pastor Kerrigan La-Brooy said while the carols event was free for the public to attend, it cost the church about $20,000 to run. A GoFundMe page has been set up to raise as much money as possible. "Most of this needs to be paid upfront to secure the requirements of stage, lights, sound, insurance, security, ambulance, advertising, traffic control and cleaning," he said. "Rather than simply accepting sponsorships, we're putting ourselves out there and working for it - or in this case 'walking' for it." The walk starts at 8am on Saturday 17 November at 10 Blake Street Berwick, with five meeting points including the Old Cheese Factory, Casey Central, Berwick Springs Lake, Brentwood Park and Eden Rise, and Hillcrest Christian College. Pastor La-Brooy said walkers can complete the whole 30km or individual legs with an estimated finish time of 3pm. "Naturally this could be up to an hour later, depending on weather conditions, physical endurance and en-route delays," he said. The Clyde Carols by Candlelight will be held on Saturday 1 December from 5.30pm to 9.30pm at the Hillcrest Christian College Oval. Fun includes free kid's amusements, free carnival rides, sausage sizzle, food vendors, raffle prizes, free giveaways, Santa aboard a fire truck, and Christmas Carols. A significant slice of war history has found its home again on the wall of Clyde North Primary School. The Clyde and District Honour Roll, which lists all Clyde men and women who were involved in the war effort, was originally at the Clyde North School No 118. Following the closure of this school in 1992, the Honour Roll was stored at the Cranbourne RSL. To commemorate Remembrance Day, the Cranbourne RSL presented the Honour Roll to Clyde North Primary School during a ceremony held on Monday 12 November. Senior vice-president of the Dandenong Cranbourne RSL Bill Shepherd said the Honour Roll showed the contribution from a small town to the war effort. "It records the names of scholars (29) including three nurses, and residents (29) from this area who served in the First World War and marks those who made the supreme sacrifice," Mr Shepherd said. "They would have traversed the fields and roads in this area over 100 years ago. This is a part of our history." The Honour Roll now sits on a case mounted on the wall of the staff room at Clyde North Primary School which also has an honour book displayed. Manager of the Cranbourne RSL and member Cindy Florent cleaned the Roll with a little help of fine sandpaper and Marveer polish. Among the names on the board were those born in Clyde, temporary labourers or residents on Clyde farms. Some names have been untraceable on electoral rolls, online digitised newspaper and genealogy websites. Such was the fervour to join the Australian Imperial forces that George Cronin, who is listed on the roll, enlisted as a 'scholar' under the age of 15.

Casey councillor, Sam Aziz, might prefer to claim that The Sunday Age's recent story on Casey councillors and developers is untrue. But if that is the case, why does Casey Council refuse to allow ratepayers to ask questions about these and other issues at public question time? Why does Casey Council have some of its staff (who are paid by ratepayers) engaged in censoring what questions are acceptable to council and what questions will not be accepted or answered by councillors or its officers during public question time? What does Casey Council have to hide? Is it really appropriate that Casey Council should use our money in this way? Why is it that some councils allow ratepayers to ask their own questions,except Casey Council? Casey council's use of censorship to stop residents from asking "controversial" questions can only be seen as being very disrespectful. It rests on a very narrow concept of democracy and transparency. At the end of the day, it also raises more questions about the standard of leadership from both council and from the Andrews Government. Because neither Luke Donnellan, or Judith Graley, both local Labor MPs, have done a thing to empower Casey ratepayers, by demanding changes to Casey's "censored" public question time. Don't councils exist to serve the interests of their local communities? Ten young people have been arrested over a series of alleged armed robberies and carjackings in the South East. The incidents occurred between 29 October and 5 November - including a Halloween spree that started with a reported egging in Hampton Park. The spree allegedly spread to South Yarra, Balaclava, Cheltenham, St Kilda and Patterson Lakes. Southern Metro Region Crime Team police conducted 11 raids at addresses in Narre Warren, Narre Warren South, Cranbourne North, Hampton Park and Elwood. A 17-year-old Narre Warren South boy was charged with aggravated carjacking, aggravated burglary and theft of motor vehicle as well as other offences. By Brendan Rees A man has been shot after a morning shooting in Cranbourne East on Wednesday 14 November. A 26-year-old man, who suffered lower body injuries was taken to The Alfred hospital with non-life threatening injuries and remained in a stable condition. Police have not revealed if the man resides at the Elmslie Drive home where the shooting occurred about 6am. Police blocked off the street and are investigating. Neighbour Kom Hayer said he didn't hear any gun shots but had heard loud motorbikes in the past at the home where the shooting

occurred, particularly during the early hours of the morning. He says there was sometimes fighting between a couple of men at the house, who "look like tradies" aged between 25 and 35. He added there was normally "nothing suspicious" in the street and incident was a "bit of shock." "A bit scary," he said. Another neighbour said it was "unusual" as it was normally a "quiet street." The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. A sanctuary in retirement Moving to Sanctuary Lifestyle at Drouin has been a family affair for Kevin Smith and Geoff Crouch. The pair are mates but also brothers-in-law. Kevin is married to Geoff’s twin sister Liz. The couples now live only meters apart in the rapidly growing retirement community. They were among the more than 100 guests who gathered on Wednesday 17 October to celebrate the official opening of the Sanctuary Lifestyle clubhouse. Geoff and wife Marianne were among the first to move into Sanctuary Lifestyle when it was little more than a “construction zone“ in July 2017. They were joined by Kevin and Liz in April. “We like the area, the fact that you can still see farms and trees. We have electric bikes and enjoy riding them on the bike trails,“ said Geoff. “People are friendly. You can come to the clubhouse any time of day and there will be someone to have coffee with.“ “The management are very helpful and open,“ added Kevin. Shirley Davidson and her partner Don Stanners moved from Corinella to Sanctuary Lifestyle in August. “We looked at other (villages) but we would have had to buy a used house. Here all the houses are brand new. We were even able to pick the site we wanted.“ Don uses the gym regularly and Shirley is learning to play bowls on the village green. “We didn’t know anybody when we came here but we’ve met lots of people. It’s been wonderful,“ Shirley said. Annette Nicholls and her husband Michael moved to Sanctuary Lifestyle in September.

MOVEMBER is here and so is team MO’Brien. Back for their third year participating in Movember, O’Brien’s Real Estate is working to shed light on a range of men’s health issues. Cranbourne Park has celebrated 40 fabulous years with a party for its customers. Australia First Party is sponsoring Susan Jakobi for the seat of Cranbourne in the State Election. Susan was a candidate in the last Federal election when she received 3232 votes in Lalor. Susan will appear on the ballot paper without a party name as the party is yet to register in the State. She does not conceal her affiliation. At a time when Victoria is being turned over to China by the Andrews government, with schemes for edu-cities, very fast trains and the takeover of the Docklands and other capital projects, Susan sees a patriotic resistance movement as vital. Ms Jakobi believes the State Government has lost control of crime with the advent of African racist street gangs, and a citizens' movement of self protection is their goal. Ms Jakobi said she was an Australian nationalist and through her campaign she has a desire to build on the ground a new political movement in the state. "We believe that circumstances demand that our policies be before the people," she said. "I am pleased I am top of the ticket as I believe it will help people identify me." Dr Tarlochan Singh is set to contest the Victorian state election as a Transport Matters Party candidate for the Lower House seat of the Cranbourne electorate. Dr Singh, 54, is a Veterinary Surgeon and past president of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Gurdwara in Keysborough and Victorian Sikh Gurdwaras Council of Victoria. Born in India, Dr Singh lives in Melbourne with his wife and two sons. He is a great advocate of and provides assistance to Cat Adoption Rescue groups and enjoys giving presentations on veterinary issues to local primary schools and in fact to anyone who will listen. From his veterinary practice Dr Singh often hosts free family events such as barbecues to engage with the surrounding community. Remembering the fallen By Brendan Rees Large crowds gathered under blue skies in Cranbourne to remember the sacrifices soldiers made a century ago, on Sunday 11 November. After the Final Post was played by bugler Mitchell Stewart, hundreds stood in a minute's silence at the Cranbourne cenotaph to commemorate the centenary of the Armistice - marking 100 years since the guns fell silent on the Western Front to end World War I on November 11, 1918. Among those who gathered for Remembrance Day were veterans, community groups and school students. Dandenong Cranbourne RSL Sub-branch senior vice-president Bill Shepherd welcomed the crowd at a service held at the Cranbourne War Memorial at Greg Clydesdale Square. In her address, City of Casey Mayor Amanda Stapledon spoke of the soldiers who fought "so courageously to keep us safe, alive and to give us a future and the freedom that we enjoy today." "Today's ceremony and the many more which will follow, give us all a chance to express our deep gratitude to the men and women who marched to battle and bravely fought in foreign lands against a formidable enemy," she said. "It was these young fresh-faced men and women who have shaped the modern world of today." Community groups and the public were then invited to lay wreaths at the Cenotaph as a mark of respect to the fallen before eyes turned to the skies where the Air Force conducted a flyover. In closing, Heather Thorne delivered a heartfelt rendition of the New Zealand and Australian national anthems. Member for Holt Anthony Bryne said Remembrance Day was of great importance to him. "I had a grandfather who served in the First World War, he said. "He was severely injured and died early so to be able to come here on the Centenary of Armistice and pay my respects to him is very important for me and for the community." For 93-year-old Word War II Air Force veteran Roy Wheeler the day was about honouring past mates. "It means a great deal, brings back a lot of old memories," he said.

Libs' $28m police pledge By Jessica Anstice An elected Liberal Government will invest $28 million to boost Victoria Police infrastructure facilities in Casey. The Liberal Nationals' infrastructure package will include: a $4 million upgrade of the Endeavour Hills Police Station to enable it to accommodate more police and be open for longer; a $4 million upgrade of the 24/7 Cranbourne Police Station; a $5 million upgrade of the 24/7 Narre Warren Police Station; building the previously announced new 24/7 $15 million Clyde North Police Station, where crime is up 132.9 percent under Daniel Andrews. According to the Liberals, under Daniel Andrews, crime in Casey is up 14.7 percent with violent crimes against the person up 23.1 percent including assaults up 21.3 percent sexual offences up 42.1 percent and robbery up 129.9percent, drug dealing and trafficking up 34.3 percent and justice procedures offences up 145.9 percent. "It is vital that the hard working men and women of Victoria Police who serve the Casey community have the infrastructure and resources they need to fight crime and protect our communities when we need help the most," Liberal candidate for Narre Warren North Vikki Fitzgerald said. "I have listened to the concerns of the people in the Endeavour Hills and Hallam areas, and the common theme is longer opening hours at Endeavour Hills Police Station. Wilcockâ€™s back at Dandy By Nick Creely Dandenong quick James Wilcock admits that if he hadn't stepped away from the intense rigours of Premier Cricket for a couple of years, he may have given it away completely. With 136 first XI wickets for the Panthers after debuting at just 16 in the 2008/09 season, the now 26 year-old is a relative veteran of Premier Cricket, but chose to step away and return to his home club, Berwick, after snaring 27 wickets in 2015/16 for one simple reason. "I was burnt out of cricket, really - playing Premier Cricket takes some time out of your life, and I played various junior tournaments and went to England for three years when I was young, and I got sick of it," he said. "It was either to quit cricket, or go play with my mates down at Berwick for a few years - I just had to go back to local cricket."

Clearly above the Dandenong District's Turf 1 grade, netting 59 wickets at 13.35 in two seasons down at Berwick, Wilcock made the choice to return to Shepley Oval after the Panthers' stunning premierships last year. "I had a pretty good season at Berwick, and got myself really fit, and I thought I'd give it another crack," he said. "I absolutely loved it, off-field and on-field - with the team we had, it was probably disappointing to not even make the finals, but it is what I needed." Through injuries and availability, the former Victorian Under 17 and Under 19 representative has been thrust straight back into the thick of the action, taking the new ball for the Panthers to lead the attack, and described the "cut-throat" nature of Premier Cricket, something he is once again thriving off. "It's been pretty smooth (coming back to

Dandenong), it does help that most of the guys around Dandenong are virtually the same, so that does help quite a lot," he said. "It's a different level of cricket, so it's taken a bit of time on the cricket side of it - it's just that bit better and getting use to bowling to better batsmen. "If you miss a training session or two, you feel a bit guilty, because there is guys in the twos that want to take your place - even me, you feel like you've been going well and guys like Peter Siddle and James Pattinson come back in and you quickly find yourself in the twos. "It is quite cut-throat, you always have to be on your game - you're always on your toes." Wilcock has started to find his groove, snaring 5/28 in a brilliant effort against Northcote, and also took 3/45 against Essendon the week prior.

"I love it (leading the bowling attack) - it's not something I really expected, but those injuries have given me a bit of opportunity, and I just have to make the most of it," he said. "I've taken some good wickets at the start of the year, and I've got to make the most of it." And as for the reigning premiers - who are moving along steadily in their premiership defence - Wilcock said that things are bound to click very soon. "That's why you play sport, to win - they won last year, but it's always harder to back it up - we've started the season alright, and there are probably a few things we could fix, but it's enjoyable," he said. "We're confident, and not too worried at the moment - we've shown great patches in games, whether with the bat, with the ball, or in the field, so it's now just putting it all together, and that's not too far away."

Local stars set for nationals By Hayley Wildes Two Berwick Primary School students are set to take on the rest of Australia later this month. Brodie Atcheson and Josiah Stanford, who are in Grade 5 and Grade 4 respectively, have been selected to the Victoria track and field state team and will compete in the School Sport Australia Championships from 23 to 27 November at Lakeside Stadium in Albert Park. Both are Berwick Little Athletics members and will be hoping to make some noise on the national stage against students from the ACT, New South Wales, Northern Territory, Queensland, South Australia and Tasmania. Brodie will be competing in the 800m event, while Josiah will be going for gold in two events; the long jump and medley relay. began in April, Brodie and Josiah were selected to the final team of 140 students last month. The process saw them compete at school, district, division, regional, and then finally state level in order to get the national call-up. Brodie enters the 800m event having come third in the state championships, with a personal best of two minutes and 25 seconds. Josiah will take on the field in long jump with a personal best of 4.39 metres, as well as taking his place in the medley relay team, of which he will run the 100m leg of the race. Both boys thoroughly enjoy little athletics and train up to five days a week, which will absolutely hold them in good stead for the national championships. There's no doubt that Brodie Atcheson and Josiah Stanford are on the rise and with a love for the sport and competition, the rest of Australia had better watch out.

Tons of fun for Spoljaric By Nick Creely DDCA TURF 1 AND 2 REVIEW - ROUND 4 (DAY 1) Crafting a century takes skill, application, as well as physical and mental fitness. Yet DDCA legend Steven Spoljaric, the five time Wookey medalist and Ryder medal winner makes them look so easy, as if he hasn’t even broken a sweat. His 18th in the association (122) in just 97 games came on Saturday for Springvale South in Round 4 of the Turf 1 season, against a highly quality Hallam Kalora Park bowling group, helping set up an imposing 312 for the Hawks at Frawley Road. It was very much a classic Spoljaric knock - pushing singles early, being patient and then accelerating like no other player in the competition. After Michael Vandort was trapped LBW in the opening exchanges after some quality new ball bowling by Jordan Hammond, Spoljaric strode to the middle with his usual calmness. As he normally does, aggressive opener Nathan King (39) took to the bowlers, allowing Spoljaric to work his way into the innings superbly. A double strike by Steven Gilmour (2/19) had the Bloods reeling at 3/61, but Spoljaric continued to play his way, constructing partnerships with Tim Ford (16) and Malinga Bandara (52) before going on and reaching the three figures in aggressive fashion. Ironically, Spoljaric was run out on 122. In reality, it was the only way to nab his prized scalp. Casey Basketball continues to go from strength to strength and with the recent selection announcements for the Basketball Victoria Elite Development programs and teams, that point has been proven once again.
