Cranbourne defeats old rival Fighting with real spirit, Cranbourne had to dig deep to reduce a 10-shot tea break deficit into a five-shot victory on home turf last Saturday, while the ladies' Division 1 side also played at home last Tuesday, turning an eightshot deficit into a drawn game against powerhouse side Clayton. Side 1 Division 2 Always a highly anticipated encounter, playing old rival Berwick at home and winning is certainly high on Cranbourne's wish list agenda. At the beginning of the game Barry, 'The General', reminded new members about the long history of the two clubs and how important it was to win at home against Berwick. He showed them the way with some outstanding bowls, supported by his team mate Peter Elgar, winning by five shots. But it was skip Sue Hudson and her crew of Daniel Byrnes, Joe Byrne and Maree Taylor who were the stars - winning by 14 shots. Cranbourne chief John McKenna was exhausted after the game but went on to say: "We really did have to dig deep after the tea break but every rink responded well and it was very pleasing that we all got the job done. Picking up 14 points and winning by five shots against Berwick was simply marvellous." Perhaps it was also an extra incentive to win with two father-son combinations playing on the day with Joe Byrne and his son Frank, and Terry Byrnes and his son Daniel. Cranbourne 82 (14 points) defeated Berwick 77. Cranbourne Ladies Division 1 The Clayton ladies came to Cranbourne with
a strong line-up of players and at the lunch break, leading by eight shots, they were expecting to run away with the game. But it wasn't to be. The Cranbourne ladies were more than up for the fight and all rinks rallied to pull off an exciting tied game. Skip Kath Dudink and her crew of Cheryl Wright, Helen Witherden and Sandra Mueller went on to win with a margin of seven shots, which was a great result - finishing off a great competitive day. Cranbourne Ladies 57 (9 points) drew with Clayton 57. Side 2 Division 3 Cranbourne started a little flat against Pakenham at home, which was a bit of a surprise after recent good form, and was unable to turn it around - going down by 24 shots. Skip Peter Colthup and his team of Gary Farrington, Shane Morrison and David Wilson got home by three shots. Cranbourne 67 (4 points) lost to Pakenham 91. Side 3 Division 5 It was a similar result against Dandenong Club on a very tricky, wind-affected green - going down by 37 shots. The best rink was again that of skip Hans Worstelling, with his crew of Sue Mueller, Isobel Partington, and Frank Coulter who all bowled well with five shots up. Cranbourne 62 (2 points) lost to Dandenong Club 93 Side 4 Division 7 Skip John Kent and his crew of Kath Dudink, Olive Stanley and Graeme Robinson won by
Division 1 Ladies bowler Sandra Mueller playing on the backhand. eight shots, which was the only good result at Berwick - losing by 37 shots on the day. Cranbourne 55 (2 points) lost to Berwick 92.
