FOCUS ON ‌ CRANBOURNE TRICODES
A unique night of racing By Russell Bennett
"It's a great way to showcase the Cranbourne Racing Centre - it's Victoria's only three-code venue, and it's probably the only venue in Australia that runs a Tricodes event. "It's a great night, and a good way for us to bookend the end of our Spring Carnival." Mr Bainbridge explained that there's something on offer for the whole family on the night. "It's always been incredibly well supported by the Casey families," he said. "A race every 10 minutes will keep a lot of people occupied. There'll be lots of entertainment and activities - it's one of those events that we invest heavily in because it's so important to a lot of people in Casey." For people who've never experienced a Tricodes night before, it truly is a unique experience - as Mr Bainbridge explained. "It's a great point of difference (to other
race nights)," he said. "You're not going to see it anywhere else, and it highlights the cooperative spirit between the three codes, and how important the Cranbourne Racing Centre is to the wider Casey area. "It's just a good, fun way to finish off the Spring Carnival for us before we get into what's an always busy Christmas period." Racegoers are encouraged to embrace the feel and ambience of 'country casual', where they can enjoy backing a winner from the bars, or on-course bookmakers. There is also plenty of grandstand seating available for those looking to watch the races from a great undercover spot. Parking is free, and tiered dining packages are also available with stylish, panoramic views of the racetrack - an outstanding way to take in all of the night's racing action.

The City of Casey Tricodes night at Cranbourne Turf Club on 17 November really does have it all. It's a night where thoroughbred, harness, and greyhound racing all comes together under the stars for one night of non-stop racing action - the only one of its kind anywhere in Australia. Night racing provides an outstanding avenue for racegoers to socialise with friends and family. Gates open at 4.30pm, and there will be
drink specials all night while live music and trackside entertainment is set to keep the party going late into the evening. There will a huge range of free kids activities on offer, and racegoers can also get up close and personal with jockeys and trainers while enjoying all of the racing action right from the mounting yard to the winning post at their leisure. "It's a significant highlight for us, and it's a highlight for all three codes," said Cranbourne Turf Club CEO Neil Bainbridge of the Tricodes night.

Property Lift out
Heavens open at the races By Brendan Rees It may have bucketed down on Melbourne Cup Day but brave crowds were still eager to soak up the action at Cranbourne Races on Tuesday 6 November. Heavy downpours hit the track but showers cleared for the big race where the Melbourne Cup was aired live on a big screen. Kids were entertained with carnival rides and face-painting, while punters and elegant racegoers were keen to back a winner. For the first time this year, 40 food vendors also vied for their share of $15,000 in cash and prizes for the best cooked barbecues in a Barbecue Turf Wars competition.

Crossings 'to go' The last four sets of boom gates on the Dandenong-Cranbourne railway line will be removed by 2025, the state ALP party has pledged. And it won’t be all sky rail. If re-elected, the State Government will remove level crossings at Webster Street in Dandenong, Greens Road in Dandenong South, Evans Road in Lyndhurst and Camms Road in Cranbourne. On 5 November Premier Daniel Andrews announced the plan at Dandenong railway station, currently shut down for works to cater for the coming high-capacity metro trains. Webster Street crossing would likely be removed by a “hybrid” solution - rail being raised over a lowered road, Mr Andrews said. The Greens Road grade separation would consist of a rail bridge over road. Crossings at Evans and Camms roads would be replaced by road bridges over rail. It’s part of a $6.6 billion promise to remove
25 further level crossings by 2025, including four in Pakenham using ‘elevated rail’. The Cranbourne-line removals would free nearly 40,000 vehicles a day stuck at the intersections, the Government claims. Sixteen near-misses and a fatality had been recorded at the Greens Road crossing since 2012. No property was expected to be acquired as part of the project, Mr Andrews said. It comes on top of a $750 million pledge to duplicate the rail track between DandenongCranbourne - a project that would employ at least 1000 jobs. The duplication would ensure 10 minute train services on the line, with $7 million planning for an extension to Clyde, he said. The Government had removed 11 level crossings as part of the ‘sky rail’ project between Caulfield-Dandenong. When asked how the Government could afford the project, Mr Andrews stood on a record
of four consecutive budget surpluses. “The real question is what would our economy and communities be like if we didn’t get on and build the sort of infrastructure we’re talking about?” That included road, rail, hospitals and schools that should have been built 20-30 years ago, he said. Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said the crossing removals would rid Greens Road and Webster Streets of a “congested nightmare”. Cranbourne Labor candidate Pauline Richards said the project would make the Cranbourne line the first in Melbourne to go “level crossing-free”. In contrast, the Opposition has pledged to extend the track - without any new level crossings - to the new housing estates in Cranbourne East and Clyde. The $487 million project would include an electrified double line with two new stations and grade separations at the South Gippsland Highway, Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road,

Broad Oak Drive and Berwick-Cranbourne Road. Opposition public transport spokesperson David Davis said the City of Casey had “substantial population growing pains” that needed “immediate government action”. “We need to ease the population squeeze which is why I am so focused on planning for population growth so every Victorian can enjoy living in their communities.” Cranbourne Liberal candidate Ann Marie Hermans said she and the community were disappointed that Labor wouldn’t extend the track to Clyde. “As I door knock throughout Cranbourne East and Clyde North, many people voice their frustrations about unreliable packed trains, long commutes and the desperate need for a train station in their local area.” Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan said the “under-cooked and under-funded” Opposition plan would not enable 10-minute services to Cranbourne.

Cr Aziz hits back By Brendan Rees A Casey councillor at the centre of a Melbourne metropolitan newspaper article alleging he's made "unlawful decision-making" has hit back, saying it is "utter nonsense." The Sunday Age published a front page story titled 'Casey's law of the land,' including a two-page report on Sunday 28 October, which reported "There's been rumblings for years at Casey about the influence of favoured property interests". The story also alleged Cr Sam Aziz had "shunned advice" of council staff for two developers to share the cost of an intersection at Hall Road in Cranbourne West. He was also accused of ignoring "repeated staff advice" for a developer to provide open space and roads between Casey Fields sports complex and the developer's estate. It was said that both decisions financially favoured the developer. The Sunday Age asserted it was not suggesting Cr Aziz had financially benefited from these decisions or had received donations. Cr Sam Aziz who represents the Springfield Ward and has served as mayor, defended his integrity describing the allegations as "insinuations" and "totally nonsense." "It's just another case of very poor journalism," he said. "It was a cheap attempt to influ-
Casey councillor Sam Aziz. 174279 ence the mayoral vote." Mayfield Ward councillor Amanda Stapledon was elected as the new mayor of the City of Casey on Monday 29 October. "I couldn't give-a-stuff what the Age thinks. What I care about is the fact that council cannot on any occasions abuse its power just because it can," Cr Aziz said. "At the end of the day, I will always stand by my record and I'm very proud of my record," he added. "There is absolutely no outside in-
fluence. "I have shown over the years that I am capable of drafting my own motions and making my own representations. "The only favouritism I have is towards my residents and towards creating jobs," Cr Aziz said. "It's not unusual for councillors anywhere in Victoria to overturn the recommendations of the officers - that happens nearly every day of the week." However, Cr Aziz conceded council was currently reviewing its planning procedures after a recent public survey revealed planning was council's worst performing area: "That planning review is causing maybe a couple of people to be really nervous." "At the end of the day that outcome will be the best thing that can happen for our residents because we deserve to be efficient in that area - we can't afford not to be," he said. Casey Council and former Mayor Geoff Ablett who represents the Balla Balla Ward did not wish to comment on The Sunday Age article. Cr Rex Flannery of the Springfield Ward weighed in saying "Why was the article brought out the day before a mayoral election?" Casey Residents and Ratepayers Association president Arvo Talvik called into question Casey Council's code of conduct. In a statement The Sunday Age said: "The Age stands by the story."
Bowled over by $60,000 windfall By Brendan Rees Cranbourne bowls club has high hopes to build an outdoor area after being allocated $60,581 through the community-driven Pick My Project. President Chris Griffiths said the club was "pleasantly surprised" their project was picked which will include under cover seating and two large water proof shade sales. "These areas will help to protect members and guests from too much sun exposure," he said. "We currently seeking quotes for these works to be done." He added it would be for "everyone to enjoy not just for our members but the hole of Cranbourne community." Mr Griffiths thanked everyone who voted for their project. "Our club is thankful for this great opportunity we have been given, and it will be a great area for the all to enjoy," he said. The grant was part of the Andrews Government's ground-breaking program that gives locals the power to choose the projects their community needs.
Nunchucks warrior: bond By Brendan Rees A Cranbourne East man, who admitted to being made to look like a “buffoon” when he infamously appeared on national TV with a nunchuck demonstration, has pleaded guilty to weapons charges. James Read was filmed by A Current Affair (ACA) in February fumbling to the ground of his backyard while providing a nunchuck demonstration, and labelled as being a part of a ‘No Fear’ gang. After the program was aired police pounced on properties, including that of a resident who was shown using a compound bow on the ACA program. The nunchucks were among the items seized by police. Mr Read faced the Frankston Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday 30 October and entered a guilty plea to a charge of possessing illegal weapons. He was handed a 12-month good behaviour bond with no conviction recorded. “I’ve got so much stuff on my plate right now with my son being injured in an accident, to drag it on any further wouldn’t be good for my family,” Mr Read said. He said the nunchucks were bought for his son who had taken up karate lessons more than 20 years ago. “ACA said it was all above board ... after the show I went to Narre Warren police station and said: 'This is what I did on TV just now, some people said that what I was doing might be considered illegal.’ He says the police told him “No, no you’re alright because you’re on your own property.“ He conceded the ACA airing was “blown out of proportion” and “I don’t go to the streets looking for trouble or anything like that.” ACA, he says, advised him everything was “above board,” when he provided a nunchuck demonstration. Mr Read said he was looking at moving out of the area to be closer to medical facilities for his disabled son. He added crime in the area was also a concern and “just going to continue.” “I think it’s a vicious cycle with certain groups of people who are committing crimes probably because they’re not getting employment opportunities.” But on the positive side, Mr Read says he has been more motivated to trim his weight after seeing many re-plays of himself on camera. “Every time I saw that video of me being so fat ... I’ve been doing a lot of sit-ups and eating right to get rid of the sweet drinks,” he said.

Cup crowd braves the rain By Brendan Rees A glamour crowd braved torrential rain as Cranbourne Racecourse hosted its second race meeting on Melbourne Cup Day. Despite the wash-out on Tuesday 6 November, the sun poked through the clouds just in time for the big race where all eyes turned to the big screen on track. Seven races were held at Cranbourne which was the first event to be alleviated as a TAB meeting. Racegoers were keen to soak up the atmosphere on the lawn where the champagne flowed. Fun also included face-painting and jumping on the carnival rides for the kids, while punters combed through the from-guide meticulously to find a winner. On lucky Cranbourne man backed Cross Counter - the winner of the Melbourne Cup. "Twenty-three is my number," Dale McCleary said. "I don't know it just looked like a good horse, low weight, good form and my number." Mr McCleary said he would get up to $700 for the win: "I'm wrapped with that, one way to end the day. I might not go to work tomorrow ... straight to Crown I think," he added. Terri McCubbin, who travelled from the Northern Territory also celebrated a big win on the Cup with her sister, Jude de LaCruz. "We got the trifecta," she said. After picking some random numbers, Ms McCubbin added it was "totally unexpected." "We had a great time at the Cranbourne Races." Cranbourne Turf Club chief executive Nail Bainbridge said the club was "pretty disappointed" with the weather. "Obviously the weather deterred quite a few people from coming out to Cranbourne on Melbourne Cup Day," he said. "To cop what we copped this morning ... so disappointing." "Otherwise, full inside, we were all prebooked with our packages inside which is good." "We look forward to doing it again next year - the weather can't be that bad two years in a row," he added. Mr Bainbridge said it was all "full steam ahead" for the Tri-Codes event on Saturday 17 November where thoroughbred, harness and greyhound racing come together for one ultimate night of non-stop racing action. The first annual Heat Beads Barbecue Turf Wars was also held where 40 food vendors vied for their share of $15,000 in cash and prizes for the best cooked barbecues.

New police station pledge By Brendan Rees A multi-million, 24-hour police station for Clyde North will be built for one of the fastest growing suburbs in the state - no matter who wins the state election. Labor announced on Monday 5 November pledging to invest $34 million to build a stateof-the-art police station if elected at the state election. The exact site for the new station, which will serve the communities of Clyde North and Officer, has yet to be determined by the state ALP party. Last November, the Coalition promised $15 million for a new police station in Clyde North by the end of 2019, if they win the election. The new station will be open to the public but will also function as a hub station to relieve pressure on Cranbourne and surrounding sta-
tions, the Coalition pledged. Labor says their new police station will accommodate uniform police officers as well as interview rooms, conference rooms, discrete public consultation facilities and a high-level of security - with construction due to be completed by 2022. Minister for Police Lisa Neville said the police station will be highly visible, more accessible to the community and better suits operational needs. "We've listened to Victoria Police and we're giving them the modern facilities they need, as well as the powers, resources and tools to keep Victorians safe," she said. Labor Candidate for Cranbourne Pauline Richards said: "This new station will put the police in the heart of our community, and allow our local police force to grow in facilities
that are fit for purpose." Labor says it's delivering the "single biggest funding boost in the history" of the Victoria Police force, with more than $2 billion to recruit 3,135 more police, and upgrade and build new police stations, across the state. However, according to the Coalition crime in Clyde was up 91.59 per cent with crimes against the person up 127 per cent, as well as crime up more than 40 per cent in Cranbourne since Daniel Andrews was elected. "Only the Liberal Nationals have the plans and resolve to tackle the law and order crisis confronting Casey," Shadow Minister for Police Edward O'Donohue said. Opposition Leader Matthew Guy said Daniel Andrews had "lost control" of law and order, and only the Liberal Nationals will make Victoria safe by building new police stations.
The ALP state party have promise to build a police station for Clyde North. Earlier this month Labor announced a new police station for Narre Warren. From left, ALP candidate for Narre Warren South Gary Maas, Minister for Police Lisa Neville, Minister for Roads Luke Donnellan and Labor Candidate for SE Metropolitan Tien Picture: ROB CAREW Kieu. 187177
Coalition declares it will get ‘traffic back under control’ A $130 million duplication of Berwick-Cranbourne Road will be built if the Coalition wins this month's state election. In a bid to get "traffic back under control," the Liberals have pledged to duplicate 6.4 km of the Berwick - Cranbourne Road from Thompsons Road to Narre Warren - Cranbourne Road to ensure traffic keeps moving during peak times. With the population of Cranbourne East/ Clyde area tipped to hit more than 143,000 people in 2041, Opposition Leader Matthew Guy said Daniel Andrews had allowed "unchecked population growth choke our streets and growth areas like Cranbourne and Clyde North are feeling the effects." "At this election, Victorians will have a clear choice. Victorians can choose more of the same
catch-up, band-aid ideas from Daniel Andrews, or they can choose my comprehensive plan to invest in vital infrastructure projects like duplicating our major arterial roads," he said. Liberal Candidate for Cranbourne, Ann Marie Hermans said: "Everyone in our community that I speak to tells me the local population squeeze is putting enormous stress on our roads, public transport, schools, hospitals and police and that impacts everyone's quality of life." Casey Mayor Cr Amanda Stapledon said the announcement was a "testament to the both sides of politics commitment to deal with congestion and population growth in Casey." Both sides of politics have committed to deliver a combination of road widening, intersection upgrades and Cranbourne Rail upgrades, which equates to well over $1 billion of dollars invested in Casey.
"It is now up to the Andrews Government to match this latest announcement to fix our roads," Cr Stapledon said. Reverend David Powys, who recently hung his protest painting outside St. John's Anglican Church in Cranbourne that depicts the abandoned rail track to Cranbourne East, said he was pleased to see progress but will continue advocating until we see real change. "Council have left no stone unturned to advocate on behalf of residents for better services and infrastructure," Mr Powys said. "While the announcements from politicians are a step in the right direction, residents will not stop advocating until we see real change." With the Federal election around the corner Cr Stapledon said council will also be seeking commitments from the Federal Government and candidates to invest in services and infrastructure for Casey's growing population.
By Brendan Rees Labor's plans to extend the Cranbourne line to Clyde may not happen until after 2026 under Transport Victoria's long term rail plan for Victoria. Leaked documents containing maps of the plan suggest a new rail link to Clyde will not occur until stage three which could be up to "as far away as 2030 or 2034," according to Liberal public transport spokesman David Davis. "There is no doubt that they are not going to do it - they're not going to do it the next two government cycles," Mr Davis said. The plan was developed by the State Government's lead transport planning authority and completed in August which details six pages of rail developments. Mr Davis described the plans as "circus" and a "joke." He added Labor initially promised to extend the rail line to Clyde in 1999 before then Premier John Brumby "quietly put it away in 2008."
Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan said Transport for Victoria conducted a range of modelling on potential works that could get Victorians home safer and sooner. "This is an internal department working document and not Government policy," she said. "If re-elected, the Andrews Labor Government will get on with the $750 million Cranbourne Duplication that will deliver more trains more often for locals. "The Victorian Liberals had four years to build the public transport system Victorians need - they promised lots and delivered nothing," she said. In a statement Labor said the document provided a "range of scenarios" that Transport for Victoria consider before they provide advice to Government. "Future frequencies and network configuration are determined once infrastructure is completed," it said.

Eggs thrown in assault Detectives have been told three men were walking south along Coral Drive, Hampton Park about 5.30pm on Wednesday 31 October when they were approached by occupants in a white Volkswagen sedan who threw eggs at them. A verbal confrontation ensued between the victim and the occupants of the vehicle, before one of the men was punched in the head in nearby Pauline Court. The two men and two women then fled in the VW sedan with one of the men’s phone and speaker. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a number of robberies in Melbourne’s south overnight believed to be committed by the same group of offenders.

Does anybody living in Berwick know the whereabouts of my long-time friend Tony Rafferty? For years we had coffee together at Fountain Gate shops. At Christmas time we would exchange Christmas cards, but since last Christmas I have never seen him. He just disappeared. In March just gone he rang to see you soon and that was it. Nothing since. Last time I saw Tony was at Fountain Gate just before last Christmas and he told me he was thinking of giving up the car due to his eyes. Maybe that’s why I never see him. I have also looked in Bunjil Place Library because Tony was a keen library person. Tony would now be around 78. I am 82 but I don’t know his address in Berwick. So wherever you are Tony, I hope you are well and maybe contact us. Best wishes from your friend and coffee mate, Derek Gardner, Hampton Park.
Well-deserved award I am delighted and incredibly proud to acknowledge the Principal and leadership team at Narre Warren Secondary who won two awards at the 2018 Victorian Education Excellence Awards. They won the Outstanding School Advancement Award as well as the overall Lindsay Thompson Award for Education Excellence. These awards are a well-deserved recognition of the transformation this school has undergone in the last three years. The school has worked collaboratively to raise expectations of their teachers and students. Using data and a focus on wellbeing the school
focuses on giving life skills and pathway to every student allowing them to succeed beyond school. Their capital works program has added to the sense of pride at the school. At the awards the leadership team reiterated their belief that the disadvantage that exists in their community doesn't have to determine the destiny of their students. Partnering with parents as well as sporting clubs, language schools and other community organisations this school has become a truly vital and important heart of the Narre Warren Community. They are literally changing lives for the better through education and are now formally recognised as an inspiration to schools across the State. As Parliamentary Secretary for Education, I have travelled across the State and seen great examples of school leadership combined with the investments made through the Education
State Reforms deliver successful student outcomes. To see such an exemplary example take place in my own electorate is an extra special privilege. As I finish my term as Parliamentary Secretary and retire as local member, I am incredibly proud of the difference the Principal team at Narre Warren South Secondary are making. Students at this school have more opportunities and will lead much better and more economically and socially prosperous lives as a result of the work of these incredible leaders. I pay tribute to their leadership and warmly congratulate all at the school who contributed to these significant and worthy honours. Yours Sincerely, Judith Couacaud Graley MP. State Member for Narre Warren South Parliamentary Secretary for Education

On 6 November the Cranbourne Star News Facebook page shared a story about Labor promising to build a $34 million police station for Clyde North and on 5 November a story was shared about Labor investing $34 million to build a brand new police station in Narre Warren. Here is how some readers reacted online: Paul Jenkins: And when there's an emergency five minutes down the road it'll take 35 minutes to get there because there's not enough roads and loads of traffic. Warren Driscoll: Can't get there quicker because rail gates are down on Clyde Road. Mark Mathews: $2 million to build it... The other $32 million in to their mates... Rip off. Ric Stewart: Where is the money coming from with all these promises? Capital re-evaluation or other stupid term Dan has come up with which really means increased taxes? There is only so much in the surplus Dan! Either you have a secret stash or you are lying!! Stop with the bullshit and scare campaign and fight the election on merit and intellect! Tanya Narelle: Wasn't it just recently renovated/up graded?

Liberals commit $5 million for school upgrade
Shadow Minister for Education Tim Smith and Liberal Candidate for Cranbourne Ann-Marie Hermans celebrate multi-million dollar announcement with students.
Libs pledge $3m revamp The Liberals have made a strong pitch for the family vote, pledging a $3 million upgrade of St Francis de Sales Primary School, Lynbrook if they win the state election this month. A new multi-purpose hall will be built as the Coalition says choice was critical for parents to have the option of low-fee, independent and Catholic schools. The announcement follows the Liberal Nationals commitment of $400 million for capital upgrades for non-government schools. Shadow Minister for Education Tim Smith said: "Only the Liberal Nationals have a plan to get back in control of the popula-
tion squeeze and give parent's the choice and children the best opportunities in their education." Liberal Candidate for Cranbourne AnnMarie Hermans said Lynbrook was a growing area and it was important for students to have access to modern and contemporary facilities. "St Francis de Sales Primary School is a wonderful local school and this upgrade will provide further education opportunity for this growing community," she said. Labor has been contacted for comment.
St Peter's College, East Cranbourne Campus is set for a multi-million upgrade if the Liberals win the state election this month. The $5.5 million makeover will include the construction of a Performing Arts Centre including a theatrette, general learning areas, specialist facilities and associated areas. The announcement follows the Liberal Nationals commitment of $400 million for capital upgrades for non-government schools. The Coalition say they support a strong public and private education system because "we believe in giving parent's choice and children the best opportunities." Shadow Minister for Education Tim Smith said the Liberals want to work with non-government schools to give all Victorian families
choice in education. "Only the Liberal Nationals have a plan to get back in control of the population squeeze and give parent's the choice and children the best opportunities in their education," he said. Liberal candidate for Cranbourne AnnMarie Hermans said students would benefit greatly from modern and contemporary facilities. "St Peter's College is a wonderful school and this upgrade will not only help students achieve great educational outcomes but will also be a fantastic facility for the local community," she said. Labor has been contacted for comment.

Garage goes up in flames By Brendan Rees Fire has destroyed a double garage in Cranbourne North on Sunday 4 November. The garage was fully alight when CFA crews arrived at the Maltravers Court home about 6.30pm. An assembly of firetrucks, including a breathing apparatus appliance and a gas specialist vehicle, were called out from Hallam, Narre Warren and Cranbourne. The fire was brought under control within 30 minutes, stopping it from spreading into neighbouring yards. CFA Operations Officer Paul Summons said there were no injuries and the cause of the blaze was under investigation. "At this stage we don't believe it's suspicious. We'll be keeping an eye on our findings," he said. Mr Summons said at one stage the fire threatened a neighbouring property and the home."Quick actions of crews stopped that spreading to adjoining structures. "Two of the things that posed a risk were a couple of LPG barbecue cylinders that were damaged by fire so we responded specialist crews to flare those off," he added. "Garages can be a little bit of the unknown, you don't know what you're getting." Neighbour Kim Kilian said she comforted an occupant of the house who was "sobbing and screaming out" before emergency services arrived. "I grabbed her and hugged her and didn't let go giving her comforting words," she said on Facebook. "She settled for a while. I said I lived just around the corner and if she needed anything to let me know. "I know she's lost her Elvis collection and clothes. The house wasn't affected, just the garage."

$11m pokies shock loss By Brendan Rees Punters poured more than $11 million into pokie machines during the month of September - leading Australia's gaming watchdog to say the situation was only "going to get worse." The latest figures from the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation revealed City of Casey ranked second worst council for gambling losses for the month of August, behind Brimbank. The shock statistics showed $11.19 million was fed into 913 gaming machines at 13 venues in September. According to the Alliance for Gambling Reform director and spokesman Tim Costello, pokies losses were causing more misery, family breakdown, crime and distress across the community. "The situation is going to get worse with the government recently revealing it has sold 998 licences to operate pokies in Casey for 20 years from 2022, and increase from the current level of 913," he said. "Pokies losses in Casey jumped by almost $2 million to a record $35.76 million in the September quarter," he said. "When you consider that City of Casey only collected $203 million in rates revenue last year, it is extraordinary to think the same community could spend $135 million on addictive poker machines. Mr Costello said the pokies industry was moving machines from the inner city to the growth areas and Casey is clearly "being targeted." "Local politicians should strongly resist
given the increased harm this will cause in a community which already suffers above average rates of family violence," he added. In a statement last month, Casey council acting manager for city planning Kathryn Seirlis said council had been advocating for the State Government to extend a cap on the number of Electronic Gaming Machines for the whole municipality. Cranbourne Information and Support Service executive officer Leanne Petrides said millions being poured into the gambling industry "which may very well be invested usefully elsewhere in our community". "Unfortunately, we know that it is very hard for people to talk about an addiction to poker machines as they are very embarrassed," she said. "If people are struggling with financial issues, it can sometimes be easy to seek a quickfix with a win at the pokies, but we know that it is more often the venue that wins, and not the patron."
Narre’s bridge of heroes By Cam Lucadou-Wells A part-time World War II militia unit who went beyond the call of duty in New Guinea will be permanently honoured at a footbridge across Monash Freeway at Narre Warren. The bridge at Prospect Hill Drive will be named the Gippsland Regiment Bridge as part of a ceremony on Remembrance Day, 11 November. The event will include veterans and family from the Gippsland Regiment - otherwise known as the 52nd Batallion. Organiser Kevin Walsh says it is fitting to recognise the regiment - a group that was formed and based in the Dandenong district. The original Battalion fought in the famous battle of Villers-Bretonneux on Anzac Day in 1918. In World War II, the Regiment’s members who were the equivalent of a part-time Army Reserve were called up to fight in desperate circumstances. While the first-choice soldiers were engaged in Europe, the regiment was deployed to New Guinea to defend Australia from a Japanese onslaught . “These guys served the community and were from the community,” Mr Walsh said. “They came to the aid of the community in its hour of need.” On the regiment’s return in 1944, its bravery was highlighted by the then-Army Minister Francis Forde. “These men have done all that has been asked of them,” Mr Forde said. “They have been asked to do more than we could rightfully expect.” A former Dandenong mayor and retired army major, Mr Walsh has included an array of community groups at the ceremony. Attendees include 97-year-old regiment veteran Wally Whitmore, as well as a parade of defence force cadets. Indigenous elder and Vietnam veteran

Olympian likes the pool
When completed Kingswim Clyde North will house a state-of-the-art 20m x 6 lane learn to swim indoor pool. This demonstrates how crucial it is for children to receive professional swimming lessons in addition to anything taught at home. "It's our mission to ensure every child has access to swimming lessons and the chance to develop the confidence and ability to stay safe in and around the water and we can't wait to provide kids in the Casey Cardinia area with that opportunity," Craig said. When completed Kingswim Clyde North will house a state-of-the-art 20m x 6 lane learn to swim indoor pool. Josh Beaver will be at the grand opening of the centre in January 2019 at the Ramlegh Springs on Clyde Estate on Tuckers Road in Clyde North. Registrations are now open and set to fill up quickly. Clyde North's newest swimming pool got the tick of approval from a championship swimmer this week. Tooradin local and Australian Olympic swimmer Josh Beaver made the trip to Kingswim's newest centre at Clyde North, which is set to open in January 2019. Josh said the centre was shaping up to be a state-of-the-art facility and would be a fantastic and much-needed addition to the local community. "I remember growing up really enjoying swimming at my local lessons. That's where my journey started and it's great to see even more children being given the same opportunities as I had as a kid," he said. "It's exciting to think the next generation Australian champions could come out of Clyde North!" Kingswim Business and Strategy Manager Craig Dowsing said that while its centres can provide children with the pathway to become professional swimmers, Kingswim is most excited to bring swim and water safety skills to the area. "We're especially eager to start lessons in Clyde North as our latest research uncovered the incredible effect childhood swimming lessons have had on Aussies' abilities," Craig said. A recent national survey commissioned by Kingswim revealed 51 per cent of Australian adults can't swim 50 metres or more without stopping. However, the survey revealed younger demographics had a much higher swimming ability, which correlated to the swimming lessons they received as children. Close to half of 18 to 24-year-olds in the survey had swimming lessons through three or more channels as children (e.g. at home/ at a swim school/at primary school), with 84% believing they received adequate swimming lessons as a child.

Learn to play the bagpipes The Berwick Pipers INC is interested in attracting new members to its group, particularly experienced bagpipe players. The group play B Flat chanters in our bagpipes as it gives them the greatest chance of helping concert bands and orchestras. The Pipers are a group of musicians who play the Great Highland Bagpipe. They have assisted Berwick Rotary on Australia days at Pioneer Park by playing in the Official Party and providing incidental music around the grounds. They perform around the City of Casey at a variety of venues to entertain the public but we also teach learners to play the great highland bagpipe. Despite the group currently having a mid-year break, lessons for their learners continue. Email berwickpipers16@gmail.com or visit the website at www.berwickpipers.info. The group's secretary Steve Everett and tutor can be contacted on 03 97296219 or 0425 826 990.

GROW BUSINESS … Casey Cardinia Region
New jobs come up apples With assistance from the State Government, Montague, an Australian fresh produce company, will establish a new state-of-the-art packing and export distribution centre in Narre Warren North, creating 25 new local jobs. The $26 million project has been made possible with assistance from the government's Food Source Victoria program. The 18,000 sqm facility will provide end-toend export logistics services. Construction of the facility is expected to commence in early 2019 with completion anticipated by late 2020. “Montague is a proud Victorian brand and the Victorian Government is backing its $26 million project to meet growing demand from export markets,” member for Narre Warren North Luke Donnellan said. “This project will create 25 jobs in Narre Warren North and deliver economic benefits to growers right across regional Victoria.” Montague is a family owned business and a major Australian grower, wholesaler and exporter of apples, pears and stone fruit. “The introduction of the new production and distribution facility will introduce Australian first packing and storage technologies for the fruit packing industry,” Montague business development general manager Rowan Little said. “We are thrilled to have support from the Food Source Victoria program, our network of growers and distributor partners.” The Narre Warren North facility will provide the production and distribution infrastructure required to significantly increase the Montague Group’s export capabilities.
The export distribution centre will manage export logistics services including packing, palletising, pre-cooling, inspections, documentation, container loading and freight forwarding. Montague and its grower network have planted approximately 1.5 million fruit trees to meet export demand from Asia, representing a 16 per cent increase in the total stock of fruit trees in Victoria. This project will allow Montague to double its packing capacity and dramatically increase its annual export sales, bringing economic benefits back to its growers in regional Victoria. The establishment of the export distribution centre is supported by regional fruit growers and packers along the agri-food supply chain, who will work together to build stronger agri-food businesses. The government’s Food Source Victoria program supports producers and businesses working in partnership to develop products that take the state’s superb produce to the next level, creating new jobs and growing exports. “Montague are proud to announce the first of a three stage development of a state of the art production and distribution facility in Narre Warren North, Victoria,” Montague supply chain manager Andrew Montague said. “The development will provide benefits for local and regional growers throughout Victoria, creating an additional 25 permanent jobs locally. An outcome we are very proud of.” Montague leads a value chain alliance with 45 apple and stone fruit growers located across Gippsland, Goulburn Valley, Harcourt, Morn-

Finalists were released on Thursday 29 September, with Highview Accounting and Financial, a full-service firm based in Cranbourne, Mornington, Prahran and soon-to-be Ringwood - being named finalists in two categories; Finance Business of the Year and Workplace of the Year. Partner, Darren Crowther said his team were buzzing with excitement at the announcement. “It’s an incredible achievement and we are very proud to be named a finalist in not one, but two categories,” he said. “This recognition is a testament to our entire Highview family; our employees, our clients, our friends, our families and our local communities. The cutting-edge campaign incorporated video interviews, billboards, print media, social media and radio ads with the peoplefocused messaging resonating with potential vendors. “O’Brien Real Estate’s communications campaign reflects the REIV’s standards of excellence and best practice and demonstrates how REIV members go above and beyond to provide ‘the difference’ in Victoria’s real estate industry.” Ms Waters said the calibre of entries

IN BRIEF Drink driver caught
Fix for danger road A dangerous stretch of road outside Lighthouse Christian College would be signalised with a pedestrian crossing under a $2 million Liberal election pledge. The intersection, on South Gippsland Highway, would also include electronic variable speed signs to improve safety for school children and pedestrians. The move follows a fatal car crash at the site which claimed the life of a Ma Li Dai and her 14-year-old daughter Xinyu Yuan in August 2017 who were leaving the Cranbourne East school after a parent-teacher night when they collided with a Commodore driven by a 26-year-old man. As a result, VicRoads reduced the speed limit to 80km/h in November last year from Ballarto Road to Clyde-Fiveways Road. The upgrade, which was announced on Thursday 1 November, will be subject to final design and implementation with VicRoads. Liberal Candidate for Cranbourne Ann-Marie Hermans said there had been "too many close calls" at the intersection. "I have spoken with many local residents who are deeply concerned about safety at this busy and dangerous intersection," she said. "That's why I've been working with the community and Matthew Guy's team to fix the design of this area and make it safe for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists." Traffic volumes on the South Gippsland Highway have increased in recent years, substantially increasing the risk for motorists and pedestrians, the Liberals argue. Shadow Minister for Roads and Infrastructure, David Hodgett said: "We are also committed to reducing our road toll and the incidence of injury or death, as a result of unsafe local roads, by making the right investments in our road networks. School principal Jacob Mathews said the school was "grateful" for the announcement, adding it was a "big growth area" and badlyneeded.
State Highway Patrol officers put the brakes on a drink driver in Cranbourne West on Tuesday 6 November. Police intercepted a vehicle on Duff Street about 4pm, with the driver testing positive to a preliminary breath test. The Cranbourne man was taken back to the police station for an evidentiary test, recording an alleged reading of .230. The 49-year-old, who was also allegedly driving with a suspended licence, is expected to be charged on summons with drink driving and other driving-related offences. His car was impounded at a cost of $1038. It was one of several impounds across the Casey and Dandenong areas by State Highway Patrol officers across the weekend and formed part of Operation Furlong, a state-wide road policing operation over the Melbourne Cup Carnival weekend. The operation, which has now finished, focused on the safety of all road users over the period, targeting drink and drug driving, speed, distraction, fatigue and seatbelt use.
Men on the run following aggravated burglary Liberal Candidate for Cranbourne Ann-Marie Hermans with Lighthouse Christian College students. 187130
"It's not just our problem - they realise trucks are going into Devon Road and you've got the quarry there, you've got everything here, it's a growth area," he said. "If it does come through it will save us a lot of money. "There's no crossing, nothing at the moment, so we would have to do all that," Mr Mathews added. Pastor Phil Cayzer of Turning Point church said he was disappointed Labor had made no commitment to improving safety outside the school. He said was offended after receiving an email from the State Government saying they were not interested in providing support
"whatsoever to any private school." The State Government has been contacted for comment. Cranbourne Christian Minister's Association will be hosting 'Meet the candidate' on Sunday 11 November 6pm at Turning Point Church (1785 South Gippsland Highway, Cranbourne East). Pastor Cayzer said each candidate standing for the state election would provide a short talk before the public would be free to ask questions. He added all five candidates standing for Cranbourne had been invited, however only the candidate for Labor Pauline Richards and Liberal candidate Ann-Marie Hermans had confirmed their attendance.
Police are hunting two men possibly armed with a firearm after it's alleged they broke into a home in Cranbourne on Tuesday 6 November. Investigators are yet to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident, however it is believed two men broke into a premises on the South Gippsland Highway about 12.10pm. The intruders then took off in the victim's Mazda. The victim, a 24-year-old man, sustained minor injuries during the incident. Police believe the parties are possibly known to each other and the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au

Bid takes shape By Russell Bennett As the bid to bring an A-League and W-League club to the south-east of Victoria continues to take shape, Team 11 Pty Ltd has unveiled more of the shareholders who have combined to turn this football dream into a reality. Joining major shareholder Gerry Ryan and Team 11's interim chairman Ghadir Razuki as investors are prominent south east businesses, including RMBL Investments, Intrapac Property and Pellicano Group. Also in the mix is a group of young and passionate local business owners and professionals - many from the local football scene - who have established a consortium to invest into Team 11. The group largely consists of business owners and professionals who have grown up in the region and played competitively in FFV state leagues. They are excited by the prospect of an A-League club growing the game for the younger generation in the south east, with many of their kids playing for local clubs in the region. The group is headed by Tony Selak and Peter Vlachos, who both played junior football locally, and has representation on Team 11's board through Dandenong-born Selak. This group is uniquely positioned to give guidance on grassroots matters, including but not limited to match day experience, interaction with families and local football clubs. The businesses and businessmen which have come together include: Selak (Ace Body Corporate Management); Vlachos (finance professional); Gavin Hately, Ivan Sember (Elite Shopfitting Australia); Alan Macinkovic, Ivica Klarica (Purple Hills Painting); Blazincic fam-

Member of the local consortium, Peter Vlachos spoke of his excitement at the prospect of having an A-League and W-League team practically right on his back door. "I grew up in the south-east and played football from a young age," he said. "I spent most of my playing days at Bentleigh Greens, but I also played at Chel-
sea, Clayton Inter and Sandringham. To be involved with something like Team 11 excites me greatly. "Having travelled around Europe and seen the youth and development programs available in those countries, I've realised that we need to create greater opportunities and better pathways here in Australia. This club, if given a licence, is our chance to grow grassroots football and create a better future for the talented kids in south-east Victoria. "The fact that I am a father of two young boys makes me even more passionate about this project."

Beaconsfield delivers an all-time thumping By Hayley Wildes
McGrath's star rises to new heights By Russell Bennett Star Essendon midfielder Andrew McGrath headed along to the Berwick Little Athletics recently to watch some of the young sporting stars of tomorrow go through their paces. McGrath, the first overall pick in the 2016 national draft, was an elite junior athlete winning the Australian national under-14 high jump competition in 2011, the Victorian state heptathlon and national 200-metre hurdles events at under-15 level in 2012, and the under-17 400-metre hurdles in 2014. But the now 20-year-old McGrath, who played in the TAC Cup with the Sandringham Dragons, chose to focus on his footy. He won the NAB Rising Star Award, the Ron Evans Medal, after a super-impressive debut season for the Bombers in 2017 in which he also won the AFL Players Association's Best 28 STAR NEWS

100-metre sprint and the Berwick youngsters were amazed that he could jump two metres in the high jump and over six metres in the long jump, as well as run the 400-metres in under 49 seconds. He spent most of the morning chatting to the athletes about all things athletics and football, as well as signing for autographs and posing for photos. Berwick Little Athletics has just experienced its highest growth for a number of years, following an influx of new members. For as long as cricket has been played, monster wins - and losses - have been part and parcel of the game. But on Saturday afternoon at Coomoora Reserve, Beaconsfield dealt an alltime thumping to Coomoora. In the Dandenong District Cricket Association Turf 3 match-up, Coomoora batted first but only lasted a measly 15 overs as the Tigers were ruthless with the ball. The dynamic pairing of Matt Golding (5/6) and Alex Roberts (4/5) produced figures that require a double-take. They were irresistible as their consistent and deadly line and length was too much for Coomoora's batsmen. Not only did the pair take plenty of wickets, their efficiency was off the charts too as they simply didn't bowl a bad delivery. With Roberts and Golding ripping through the batting line-up, the Roos were dismissed for just 20 runs as nine batsmen failed to make more than two runs. "Their captain, Lance Baptist - we played against him last year and he's a good player he came in at five and we thought if we can get him out early, then who knows what can happen," Matt Golding said of the stunning result. "I think we got him out second ball and from then, they just kept missing the straight balls. We hit the stumps a lot and and it was just one of those things that within the blink of eye we'd bowled them out." In response, the Tigers posted a total of 1/24 in five overs to claim the resounding win. In what would have to be one of the quickest games in recent memory, after kicking off at 1pm, it was all done and dusted by around 2:30 - and that includes a break between the innings. The win sees Beaconsfield remain on top of the ladder after three rounds, boasting three wins - all of which have come in convincing fashion. "We've got a really, really good bunch - I think we've got maybe four players from last year, but all the new guys who have come in have really gelled together and there's a really good vibe around the club," Golding said. cranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au

Ben’s journey to the top By Russell Bennett Ben Allen has a different perspective than most when it comes to 'the race that stops the nation'. This time last year, Pakenham jockey Allen now 19 - picked up the last-minute Melbourne Cup ride aboard Thomas Hobson after Joao Moreira was injured in a frightening fall earlier in the day. The teenage apprentice finished an impressive sixth - backing up the form he showed aboard Lord Fandango in finishing fourth in the Caulfield Cup last October. Allen, who regularly rides track work at Cranbourne, remembered 2017 Melbourne Cup day as if it was yesterday. "It's unreal - I was just happy to be riding on the day," he explained. "Jockeys from all over the world fly over for this meeting and I was just happy to be there, and it was just a fluke that I happened to be walking around at about 53.5 kilos, 53 on the day when unfortunately Joao had that fall (earlier in the day) and I was the only one who was going to be able to make the weight." Allen put his hand up to take the ride, and subsequently did everything he could to make weight for the race. "I was planning on watching the Cup up on the tower and then a few hours before then I was lucky enough to fluke the ride," he said. Allen is still looking forward to breaking through for his first Group 1 win, and he's showed plenty of super encouraging signs pointing to it not being too far away. He's had his setbacks - such as a fractured foot, a back injury, and even a battle with glandular fever, but he's put it all behind him now and the experiences he's gained have only served to make him a stronger rider. For a while, in fact, he'd forgotten just what it was like to ride at full strength - given he was

But that's all in the past now. "I'm getting good rides for big trainers and
I've been lucky enough to be put in some nice races," he said. "I'm just hoping to keep going on with that and hoping to be able to get my first Group 1
out of the way, but it is quite hard this time of year. "At the moment I've been lucky enough to be riding for Darren Weir and he gives me a lot of support and gives me a really good go so hopefully it won't be too long." The Group races he's won this Spring have him feeling particularly bullish about the future. "I've had a few placings in a couple of Group 1s - hopefully it's not too far off, but I'm just happy to be able to get good rides and be involved on the big days," he said. Allen spoke about the buzz and excitement that surrounds such iconic races as the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups. "As soon as you jump from the barriers, it's just deafening - especially the Melbourne Cup," he said. "As soon as the last horse heads in, the crowd is just crazy. It's hard to explain how loud it is. "It definitely helps to narrow your focus, but when you're out there you're pretty switched on with what you want to do and what your first plan is anyway. "Still, it's hard not to notice the crowd." Now, for Allen, he's trying to build on his experiences moving forward - and learn as much as he can from some of the more experienced jockeys he comes up against. "Just watching the international riders and how they ride these big races and how calm and patient they are - it's something you try and learn from to hopefully improve the way you ride," he said, adding that the top jockeys treat Group 1 races the same as any other race they're competing in. "Staying races are really all about timing and when you pick your run. It's knowing your horse and being able to ride your own race and not let the big occasion take over," he said.

By Russell Bennett and Hayley Wildes VICTORIAN PREMIER CRICKET Dandenong champion Brett Forsyth marked his 200th Victorian Premier Cricket match with a superb, unbeaten ton to put the Panthers in a strong position after day one against the Monash Tigers at Shepley Oval. After winning the toss and electing to bat, Forsyth and his great mate - skipper Tom Donnell (65) - set up the innings with a 124-run opening stand. And when Donnell fell, Forsyth took it upon himself to carry his bat and anchor the rest of the innings - all 357 minutes of it. One of the ultimate clubmen, Forsyth’s record at Dandenong is nothing short of remarkable - and he’s continued that strong form this season with 352 runs so far at a whopping average of 70.4 His 125 on Saturday - his 14th century for the Panthers - was testament to his leadership, determination, and rock-solid focus to play his role to the best of his ability for the club. Though he and Donnell were the side’s only batsmen to reach 30, the bulk of the damage inflicted on the Tigers had been done through their partnership. For Monash, leg-spinner Tom O’Connell toiled had for 30 overs to finish with the eventual figures of 4/88, while Fred Klaassen was the side’s other multiple wicket-taker with 2/71 from his 20 overs. Though the Tigers clearly have their work ahead of them on Saturday, it should be noted that at one stage on day one the Panthers slipped from 0/124 to 4/157. Casey-South Melbourne, meanwhile, is in a commanding position after day one of their clash against Camberwell. Having won the toss, the Swans elected to bat and despite opener Luke Wells falling for a duck and the team standing at 3/30 at one stage, an 89-run partnership between Jared Maxwell (67) and Michael Wallace (125) steadied the ship. Wallace, the club’s playing vice president, was in superb form and his electric yet composed innings featured 18 boundaries as he punished any slightly wayward deliveries.
Dandenong opener Brett Forsyth picked the perfect time to record his 14th century for the Pictures: ROB CAREW Panthers. 187072 After a strong partnership with Maxwell, Wallace then went to work with Devin Pollock (83) and the pair put on a mammoth 161-run stand before Maxwell was finally dismissed. At that point, the Swans were humming along at 6/286 and the team would eventually post an imposing total of 9/329 in 96 overs. For Camberwell, William Walker (5/44) was a constant threat and bowled extremely well in tough circumstances, while Andrew Fekete (4/112) was flying at the start of the innings, but struggled later in the day. MPCA - PROVINCIAL ROUND 4 (DAY TWO) After Mornington posted an imposing total of 8/276 off 80 overs last Saturday, day two commenced with Pearcedale at the crease needing plenty of runs. Pearcedale’s run chase got off to a slow start as they fell to 4/27 and they were unable to recover, despite the best efforts of Kaine Smith (49) and Harrison Capes (40 not out). Mornington’s Matt Foon (4/39) was too good as Pearcedale was dismissed for 182 runs in the 71st over. Langwarrin posted a commanding total of 9/295 last Saturday against Peninsula OB and defended their total well on day two. Despite strong top-order starts for Peninsula OB, they were dismissed for 211 in 59 overs as Langwarrin’s bowlers took key wickets when needed. In other matches, Mt Eliza (8/203) defended their total against Flinders (178), while Baxter (6/318) was unable to defend its commanding total against Sorrento (3/322).

Bucks run riot over Hawks By Russell Bennett and Hayley Wildes DDCA TURF 1 AND 2 REVIEW - ROUND 3 Buckley Ridges has continued its unbeaten start to the Dandenong District Cricket Association Turf 1 season after a clinical chase down of Hallam Kalora Park in Hallam. Batting first in the Round 3 one-dayer, the home side could only muster 8/155 from its 40 overs. Openers Ben Hillard (3) and Leigh Booth (4) both fell early and when Jaime Brohier (3) fell soon after the home side was sitting at a precarious 3/27. The task to set about rescuing the innings then fell on the shoulders of Jordan Hammond (66) and Ryan Hillard (36), who scored over 100 of their side’s runs just between the two of them. But there was only so much they could do, given their side’s shaky start. Buckley Ridges wasted absolutely no time in its reply, reaching 3/160 at the start of just the 25th over with the star opening combination of skipper David White (52) and DJ Watson (79) doing the bulk of the damage between them in their 141-run stand. Saturday marked the first dismissal of the season for South African First Class player White, 27, who has returns of 105 not out, 85 not out, and 52 in his first three hits for Buckley Ridges - all at a whopping average of 242 so far. Berwick, meanwhile, has toppled both of last season’s Turf 1 grand finalists in consecutive rounds. On Saturday the Bears proved too strong for Mordialloc at Ben Kavanagh Reserve. Batting first, the visitors reached a strong 7/214 from their 40 overs thanks to each of their top six batsman passing at least 20 - led by skipper Matt Chasemore with 57. After losing opener Brendan Morris without scoring early in its reply, Mordialloc ultimately reached 8/187 from its 40 overs - led by Damith Mapa Ralalage with 39. Isaiah Jassal was the pick of the Berwick attack, finishing 30 STAR NEWS

with 3/27 from his eight overs. Astonishingly, Mordialloc is now winless through its opening three games of the season. Springvale South (7/178) was too strong for St Mary’s (163) at Thomas Carroll Reserve. Batting first, the Bloods lost openers Michael Vandort (4) and Nathan King (25) early but recovered thanks to the steady hands of Steve Spoljaric (28), skipper Craig Slocombe (16), Malinga Bandara (34), and - most significantly - Tim Ford (52). Luke Davis (5/38) was stellar with the ball for St Mary’s, claiming his first five-wicket haul of the season, while Ruwantha Kellepotha backed up his 5/31 in Round 2 with 2/30 from his eight overs. St Mary’s also lost both openers early in their reply, from which they also fought back from. But after the 68-run, third wicket stand between Kellepotha (50) and skipper Kaushalya Gajasinghe (48) they lost a steady stream of wickets to slide from 3/99 to be all out for 163. Jarryd Straker claimed 4/46 for the Bloods, while Jarrod Armitage (2/27) and Bandara (2/30) were the side’s other multiple wickettakers. In the other game of the round, Heinz Southern Districts (6/209) had the better of North Dandenong (9/194) in a high-scoring clash at Lois Twohig Reserve. HSD star Michael Davis was again simply sensational with both bat and ball, top-scoring with an unbeaten 90 before claiming 4/29 from his eight overs. TURF 2 Cranbourne’s batsmen failed to fire against St Brigid’s/St Louis at Casey Fields on Saturday and it cost them dearly. With opener Cameron Kelly (23) top-scoring, others fell cheaply and tallied a total of just 9/111. Patrick Jamieson (3/26) was dangerous for St Brigid’s/St Louis. In reply, the visitors reached the required runs in 35 overs as Liam Harris (44) batted strongly. Cameron Kelly (3/15) was the pick of Cranbourne’s bowlers.

Jordan Hammond top-scored for the Hawks with 66 on Saturday. Narre Warren, meanwhile, was far too good for Dandenong West at Sweeney Reserve. After sending Dandenong West in to bat first, Narre Warren got straight to work as Ben Ingham (4/25) and James Elliott (3/26) were irresistible with the ball. Dandenong West was dismissed for just 125 runs in 31 overs. Narre Warren’s run chase was in total control as they claimed a four-wicket win. Dilusha Nanayakkara (35) and Zach Allen (28) helped the side post a total of 6/128. Narre North took the points against Dingley. With Dingley batting first, they posted a total of 6/155 as Corey Booth (66 not out) was the only batsmen to make inroads against the
Narre North bowling attack. Narre North - led by a great unbeaten half century by Marshall Gray (58 not out) and keeper-batsman Josh Tonna (31) - chased down the required runs in the 37th over. Meanwhile, Narre South demolished Parkmore. Narre South - led by significant contributions from Scott Phillips (79), Ashan Wijayakumara (78) and Joe Thomas (64) - posted an imposing total of 7/277. Parkmore was never in the hunt as Muhammad Ghaffar (4/24) and Scott Phillips (3/8) were simply ruthless. The Pirates were dismissed for just 86 runs in the 25th over. cranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au

Cranbourne defeats old rival Fighting with real spirit, Cranbourne had to dig deep to reduce a 10-shot tea break deficit into a five-shot victory on home turf last Saturday, while the ladies' Division 1 side also played at home last Tuesday, turning an eightshot deficit into a drawn game against powerhouse side Clayton. Side 1 Division 2 Always a highly anticipated encounter, playing old rival Berwick at home and winning is certainly high on Cranbourne's wish list agenda. At the beginning of the game Barry, 'The General', reminded new members about the long history of the two clubs and how important it was to win at home against Berwick. He showed them the way with some outstanding bowls, supported by his team mate Peter Elgar, winning by five shots. But it was skip Sue Hudson and her crew of Daniel Byrnes, Joe Byrne and Maree Taylor who were the stars - winning by 14 shots. Cranbourne chief John McKenna was exhausted after the game but went on to say: "We really did have to dig deep after the tea break but every rink responded well and it was very pleasing that we all got the job done. Picking up 14 points and winning by five shots against Berwick was simply marvellous." Perhaps it was also an extra incentive to win with two father-son combinations playing on the day with Joe Byrne and his son Frank, and Terry Byrnes and his son Daniel. Cranbourne 82 (14 points) defeated Berwick 77. Cranbourne Ladies Division 1 The Clayton ladies came to Cranbourne with
a strong line-up of players and at the lunch break, leading by eight shots, they were expecting to run away with the game. But it wasn't to be. The Cranbourne ladies were more than up for the fight and all rinks rallied to pull off an exciting tied game. Skip Kath Dudink and her crew of Cheryl Wright, Helen Witherden and Sandra Mueller went on to win with a margin of seven shots, which was a great result - finishing off a great competitive day. Cranbourne Ladies 57 (9 points) drew with Clayton 57. Side 2 Division 3 Cranbourne started a little flat against Pakenham at home, which was a bit of a surprise after recent good form, and was unable to turn it around - going down by 24 shots. Skip Peter Colthup and his team of Gary Farrington, Shane Morrison and David Wilson got home by three shots. Cranbourne 67 (4 points) lost to Pakenham 91. Side 3 Division 5 It was a similar result against Dandenong Club on a very tricky, wind-affected green - going down by 37 shots. The best rink was again that of skip Hans Worstelling, with his crew of Sue Mueller, Isobel Partington, and Frank Coulter who all bowled well with five shots up. Cranbourne 62 (2 points) lost to Dandenong Club 93 Side 4 Division 7 Skip John Kent and his crew of Kath Dudink, Olive Stanley and Graeme Robinson won by
Division 1 Ladies bowler Sandra Mueller playing on the backhand. eight shots, which was the only good result at Berwick - losing by 37 shots on the day. Cranbourne 55 (2 points) lost to Berwick 92. Side 5 Six a side Skip Mick Feeley and his team members Bryan Eagle and Alan Agullana had a good day, winning by 24 shots - which contributed to the sixshot victory against Black Rock. Cranbourne 41 (12 points) defeated Black Rock 35. Midweek Bowls Mid-week bowls results this week were:Cranbourne 2 Division 2 Open 49 (4 points) lost to Edithvale 55.
