OPINION They’re children!

12398912-RA37-18

In my working life I did my workshops every year around Responding to Abuse and Neglect, it must be done by everyone who works with children, I understand this. We are then mandated to report any sign of child abuse to authorities. Okay, so let’s talk about the documented abuse that is happening on Australia’s offshore island open air prisons. After watching 7.30 on 27th August, there can be no questioning this and no rhetorical responses will make it go away. There can never be any justification for detention and harm to children seeking asylum. This secret cannot be kept any longer, the word is out and everyone knows what is going on. How can we be held to account for children here in Australia and not the children on Nauru? How can our government possibly justify this? Gwyneth Jones, Pearcedale.

SOCIALLY SPEAKING On 1 September the Cranbourne Star News Facebook page shared a story about a $750 million upgrade to the Cranbourne line which will be duplicated from Dandenong to Cranbourne if the State Government is re-elected in November. Here is how some readers reacted online: Mason Pelican Oneill: Should've done it anyway when doing overpasses. Emma Rolling: Should of been done years ago, and also Clyde. But you only propose to do it during an election year. Troy Dawes: Well done Daniel Andrews. Bob Jaggard: Trains every 10 minutes it says Dieter, churn rate thru to car park will be interesting. Just wait 10 minutes for the next spot? Along with 100 other people orbiting the car park. Dieter Koch: I am seriously considering moving to tassie. Peter Ryan: So many promises so much money, where will it come from - selling off more of our future and our grand kids futures. Robert Wingrave: Believe it when I see it. Amin Abdullah: Stand up comedy.

By Jessica Anstice Tooradin Primary School celebrated the importance of positive male role models in each of their children's life. Students invited a special friend to the Father's Day Breakfast to spend some time in their school environment - dads, grandparents, uncles, brothers, neighbours, and of course mums were invited too. One of the schools Parents and Friends Association (PFA) members had a catering background and put her hand up to start the exciting Father's Day Breakfast. "We have huge support from our parents and local community members who jumped in to assist with making this occasion such a success," PFA president Mandy Skewes said. "Many activities were organised during the morning for children and adults to enjoy." Activities included making a card, who is your superhero game, kick the footy, dad themed music, relaxing seating and chalk drawing challenge all while eating a delicious egg and bacon roll and hash browns. This breakfast was followed by a Father's Day Stall for the students which the PFA have worked very hard in thinking outside the square for the students would want to purchase for their special person. Students across the school beamed with pride over the gifts they chose for their Dad's and the unique cards and messages they created to surprise their dad's with on Father's Day. "The enthusiasm of our Parents and Friends Association is now filtering through to the entire school with kids buzzing around parents and asking if they can help too," Ms Skewes said.

Picture: Stewart Chambers "Parents and community members balance their support of school events with running their own businesses, having small children, being part of outside charities and organisations and balancing family life. "We have a vision that if every family could help out at their child's school for just for an hour a year imagine what our children could achieve by pooling all these skill sets together." cranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au
