Cavs at home In front of a packed out and vocal Casey Stadium crowd on Saturday night, the Casey Cavaliers roared home to win the BigV Youth League 2 women's title with a thrilling win over Frankston. After taking game one on the road a week earlier, the Cavaliers claimed the Championship with a hard-fought 89-84 win in game two.

Our 28 tragedies Twenty-eight young lives have been tragically lost to the City of Casey’s roads in the past decade, Transport Accident Commission (TAC) figures reveal. Casey ranked the second worst in the state for road trauma for young people aged up to 25 years from 2008 to 2017, behind Yarra Ranges. TAC chief executive officer Joe Calafiore said transport accidents remained one of the leading causes of death of young Victorians and showed there is “still much to be done.” He said in their first year of driving, young drivers in Victoria were almost four times more likely to be involved in a fatal or serious injury

crash than more experienced drivers. “That’s why it’s so important to teach safe driver behaviour, to all Victorians, at an early age,” he said. “It starts with role modelling safe behaviours when we are behind the wheel, and spending as much time as possible teaching our kids how to drive safely, ride their bikes and walk safely around roads. It is also crucial to get young drivers into the safest cars possible.“ TAC research also showed young drivers aged 18 to 25 accounted for 24 per cent of deaths on Victoria’s roads last year. City of Casey councillor Sam Aziz said the statistics were heartbreaking and more invest-

ment needed to be made on the roads to make them safer. “The tragedy of a young life lost is a tragedy spreads through the community as well,” he said. “We all have a responsibility as elected officials and lawmakers to ensure that that the risk of this occurring is absolutely minimised.“ Minister for Roads and Road Safety Luke Donnellan joined the TAC and Museums Victoria to officially open a $55 million Road to Zero Education Complex at the Melbourne Museum on Tuesday 28 August. The complex will feature the latest in visual and digital technology to help students and the wider community understand their own

vulnerability, the role of speed in crashes and the importance of safer vehicles. Mr Donnellan said: “The earlier we can start a conversation around road safety - in classrooms, on-road or amongst friends and family, the better equipped young Victorians will be to drive safely.” Casey Highway Patrol Acting Sergeant Leigh Royal said the key message for drivers was to slow down and “remove anything that may distract you.” “Every person’s life is important. Police have the ability to drug test any driver in Victoria and drugs can stay in your system for a considerable period of time after you actually use the drug.”

Casey knocks back pokies application new or additional EGMs under current legislation. Council received 12 submissions from the community surrounding the Lynbrook Tavern, 10 of which objected to the proposed extra EGMs. City of Casey Mayor Cr Geoff Ablett said this was a fantastic feat for Council due to the detrimental effect EGMs can have on a local community. "Lynbrook, Cranbourne and Hampton Park, which would have been most impacted by the application, have some of the highest levels of social and economic disadvantage in the Casey and south-east region," he said. "They are also classified as 'capped areas', which means they're already more susceptible to gambling harm."

Council was supported by the Casey Residents and Ratepayers Association and the Cranbourne Information Support Service, both who provided evidence at the hearing. Cr Ablett said that Council has a responsibility to ensure the wellbeing of the local community. "An assessment of the EGMs proposal against Council's Electronic Gaming Machines Strategy 2015-2020 indicated that it would compromise the objectives of this, along with key objectives of Council's Municipal Health and Wellbeing Plan 2017-2021," he said. "The additional gaming machines would have caused a social detriment to the community surrounding the hotel."

Suburb growth fuels commute nightmare

By Brendan Rees Furious motorists are starting to reach the end of their tether as roads surrounding Cranbourne struggle to cope with the ever-expanding housing estates. Residents say the most congested roads impacting them were the South Gippsland Highway, Thompsons Road, Sladen Street, Hall Road, and Western Port Highway. One driver in Cranbourne East said she had three options to get to and from the Monash freeway; South Gippsland Highway, Westernport Highway, and a small variety of back roads through housing estates. "If one has an issue, the others are more horrible than usual," she said. Other motorists say the South Gippsland Highway from Cranbourne North to Lynbrook was "gridlocked most mornings," while others say they could be stuck on Thompsons Road for up to an hour. Thompsons Road was pinpointed in RACV's biennial Redspot survey this year where a roundabout between Taylors Road and Dandenong-Hastings Highway was a source of long delays. Minister for Roads and Road Safety Luke Donnellan said current upgrade works underway on Thompsons Road which would see

Traffic chaos on Thompsons Road in Cranbourne North. 163062 the replacement of the Westernport Highway roundabout with traffic lights and the completion of duplication works between FrankstonDandenong Road and Berwick-Cranbourne Road by 2019. Mr Donnellan added: "We're duplicating vital suburban arterial roads like Thompsons Road and Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road." "We've also invested in major intersection upgrades at Pound Road/Shrives Road, Narre Warren North Road/Belgrave-Hallam Road and Fox Road, just to name a few." Leader of the Opposition, Matthew Guy said it was frustrating the Andrews government was only focused on the inner city and not growth areas like Cranbourne. "I want to get Victoria moving again so commuters spend less time in traffic and more time with their families and loved

ones," he said. Last year Mr Guy pledged to scrap roundabouts at Hall Road and Western Port Highway in Cranbourne West, and Thompsons Road and Western Port Highway in Lyndhurst - and replaced with underpasses. The City of Casey also announced its biggest advocacy campaign in January calling on the State Government and Opposition to Commit to Casey fix the region's roads. "Fixing roads and extending rail will create jobs, improve access to essential services, ease cost of living pressures and help the local community and economy thrive," said Casey Council Mayor Geoff Ablett. Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) showed 79.2 per cent of people travel to work by car (either passenger or driver) from the City of Casey.

Tradie struck a big blow By Brendan Rees Tradie John Zahra had more than $1000 worth of equipment allegedly stolen and is now appealing to the public to help track down the heartless thieves. Mr Zahra said he had carried out a job of cleaning carpet that was flooded at a work site in Mayday Crescent, Cranbourne West, on Sunday 26 August. He said he was called to help soak up the water after intruders had broken into the property four days earlier and turned on taps to flood the premises. After finishing, Mr Zahra left five air movers at the site to allow the carpet to dry for four days. But when he returned on Wednesday 29 August to check if the carpet was dry he found three of the dryers missing. According to Mr Zahra, he believes it may have been the same intruders who came again "just to steal" his equipment. "The rear door to the garage was smashed to get into and then the door from the garage to get into the house was broken," he said. Mr Zahra has been operating his family business Zarz Carpet and Tile Cleaning with his son Chandler and wife for 23 years and said he was gutted by the theft. "It's just a shame guys like me go out there try to earn an honest living and have to be disappointed with people who steal tools," he said. "That's my first disappointed in 23 years of running the business - so that's a pretty good run. "We've been very fortunate - it is stock I can replenish, it's just a shame I've got to do that off my own bat," he added. Cranbourne police are investigating. Casey Council has successfully opposed an application for an additional 20 poker machines at the Lynbrook Tavern. Council resolved to object to the proposal at its meeting on Tuesday 1 May, after undertaking an independent Social and Economic Impact Assessment and public consultation. A successful application by the Lynbrook Tavern would have increased its electronic gaming machines (EGMs) from 55 to 75. The application was officially refused following a hearing at the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation on Friday 14 July. It is the first time Casey Council has successfully had a poker machine application refused; a rare achievement given the challenges faced by Councils in opposing applications for

Cranbourne library is set to receive an facelift thanks to a $51,000 funding boost from the State Government. Minister for Local Government Marlene Kairouz announced the funding on Tuesday 28 August under the Living Libraries Infrastructure Program. The project will upgrade the foyer to offer a friendly space for gathering, and a re-design of the customer service area and public computer area. City of Casey will chip in an additional $34,000 towards the project with construction starting in November and is expected to be completed in April 2019. Casey mayor Geoff Ablett said libraries were vital for promoting literacy among community members, providing free access to information and encouraging lifelong learning. "The project also aims to reduce barriers in relation to access, reduce the size and footprint of the customer service areas and improve access to library staff. "The reclaimed floor space will be used for much-needed activity space, such as study areas and individual workspaces," he said. "We thank the State Government for their contribution towards enhancing this valuable community space." Casey Cardinia Libraries Corporation CEO Chris Buckingham said he was delighted that the City of Casey and the State Government had committed to improvements for the Cranbourne Library. Casey Council has welcomed a commitment by the Andrews Government to duplicate the rail track between Dandenong and Cranbourne and plan for a new rail link to Clyde if re-elected in November. City of Casey Mayor Cr Geoff Ablett said he was pleased to see progress being made on the extension of Cranbourne rail to Clyde in response to the Commit to Casey community campaign. "The 'Commit to Casey' community advocacy campaign has made significant progress in making the case for the Clyde rail extension, which had seemed lost on Spring St for too long," he said. "The Government's $750 million commitment draws us closer to delivering non-partisan support for building much needed and deserved rail infrastructure to Clyde, connecting residents to jobs, schools and services." Cr Ablett praised the community and fellow councillors for their strong support of the campaign, noting their persistence is paying off. "Casey residents have not forgotten about the many promises made by past politicians to extend Cranbourne Rail and fix our roads. Residents ought to be commended on their persistent campaigning." Cr Ablett said with the Government's announcement all sides of politics ought to be held accountable for their promises. "While we are pleased with commitments from Labor, Liberal and the Greens, promises to extend Cranbourne Rail line have come and gone from major parties in the past, so this time the campaign isn't over until we see the

In my working life I did my workshops every year around Responding to Abuse and Neglect, it must be done by everyone who works with children, I understand this. We are then mandated to report any sign of child abuse to authorities. Okay, so let’s talk about the documented abuse that is happening on Australia’s offshore island open air prisons. After watching 7.30 on 27th August, there can be no questioning this and no rhetorical responses will make it go away. There can never be any justification for detention and harm to children seeking asylum. This secret cannot be kept any longer, the word is out and everyone knows what is going on. How can we be held to account for children here in Australia and not the children on Nauru? How can our government possibly justify this? Gwyneth Jones, Pearcedale.

SOCIALLY SPEAKING On 1 September the Cranbourne Star News Facebook page shared a story about a $750 million upgrade to the Cranbourne line which will be duplicated from Dandenong to Cranbourne if the State Government is re-elected in November. Here is how some readers reacted online: Mason Pelican Oneill: Should've done it anyway when doing overpasses. Emma Rolling: Should of been done years ago, and also Clyde. But you only propose to do it during an election year. Troy Dawes: Well done Daniel Andrews. Bob Jaggard: Trains every 10 minutes it says Dieter, churn rate thru to car park will be interesting. Just wait 10 minutes for the next spot? Along with 100 other people orbiting the car park. Dieter Koch: I am seriously considering moving to tassie. Peter Ryan: So many promises so much money, where will it come from - selling off more of our future and our grand kids futures. Robert Wingrave: Believe it when I see it. By Jessica Anstice Tooradin Primary School celebrated the importance of positive male role models in each of their children's life. Students invited a special friend to the Father's Day Breakfast to spend some time in their school environment - dads, grandparents, uncles, brothers, neighbours, and of course mums were invited too. One of the schools Parents and Friends Association (PFA) members had a catering background and put her hand up to start the exciting Father's Day Breakfast. "We have huge support from our parents and local community members who jumped in to assist with making this occasion such a success," PFA president Mandy Skewes said. "Many activities were organised during the morning for children and adults to enjoy." Activities included making a card, who is your superhero game, kick the footy, dad themed music, relaxing seating and chalk drawing challenge all while eating a delicious egg and bacon roll and hash browns. This breakfast was followed by a Father's Day Stall for the students which the PFA have worked very hard in thinking outside the square for the students would want to purchase for their special person. Sweet and savoury gift bags, 3D printed

Shannon Hughes with his Grade 2 son Kye. 184641 items, instant photo booth to name a few. Students across the school beamed with pride over the gifts they chose for their Dad's and the unique cards and messages they created to surprise their dad's with on Father's Day. "The enthusiasm of our Parents and Friends Association is now filtering through to the entire school with kids buzzing around parents and asking if they can help too," Ms Skewes said.

Picture: Stewart Chambers "Parents and community members balance their support of school events with running their own businesses, having small children, being part of outside charities and organisations and balancing family life. "We have a vision that if every family could help out at their child's school for just for an hour a year imagine what our children could achieve by pooling all these skill sets together." cranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au

Giant chess funding moves By Jessica Anstice

Cranbourne South Primary School is set to undergo a million-dollar face-lift if the State Government wins the November election. The State Government announced on Thursday 30 August it would invest $5.9 million to completely refurbish and modernise the Minister for Education James Merlino said the State Government had already delivered more than $600,000 for upgrades to Cranbourne South Primary School but "there's more to do." Should Labor win the election, a start date for works will be determined after the election. "The Liberals didn't spend a single cent on Cranbourne South Primary School and slashed $1 billion out of our education system, leaving schools to crumble and decay across the state," he said.

"Mums and dads in Cranbourne South deserve to know their kids are getting the very best start in life. With these upgrades, we'll make sure they are." The announcement comes after parents at the school complained of mould infested classrooms, quarantined toilets, an EPA notice being issued, and asbestos fears in May. A lack of disability access to classrooms and a first-aid room has also forced students to relocate to a multi-purpose room riddled with asbestos - which has been marked for removal. School Council President Jodi Price said the school's only toilet block that catered for 379 students had to be quarantined in February this year, costing the school "astronomical electricity costs" to run cleaning equipment with no reimbursement in sight. Cranbourne MP Jude Perera said the major upgrade would provide state-of-the-art facilities for students and staff at the school.

Alkira Secondary College in Cranbourne North's giant chess set was stolen in late February last year, 2017. Since then, the schools Intermediate VCAL students went on a fundraising journey in order to replace the chess set. During head start 2017 the Intermediate VCAL students started preparing for their new Business Program that is designed to provide students with authentic opportunities to network, gain new knowledge and achieve competency in a range of skills. The program was heavily promoted within the college community, with requests for 'clients' for the new businesses. As part of the VCAL Business Program, students Shama Shakar khan and Baneen Habibi liaised with principal, John Shaw, in the hope of replacing the chess set. They researched giant chess sets and made recommendations with costings and presented these to Mr Shaw. They wanted to help Alkira's community engage in activities that help build a sense of connectedness and community. The students applied for funding from City of Casey's Quick Response Grants - addressing all the criteria succinctly and thoroughly but learnt that this grant was no longer made available to schools as of 2018. Rising to this challenge, Shama and Baneen sought advice from VCAL staff and researched other funding sources. After considerable negotiations with their work related skills teacher Laura Henderson and VCAL learning domain leader their proposal was successful and they were granted access to the ADVANCE for Schools Program. They ordered the chess set and liaised with Cushman and Wakefield staff as well as Alkira's Mr Abraham on how to assemble the set and discuss secure storage ideas.

Alkira Secondary College has replaced its giant chess set after the original set was stolen at the beginning of last year. Photo: Alkira Secondary College Intermediate VCAL student Daniel Shield. The giant chess set is currently locked up securely in a cage outside in the Agora alongside the giant chess board. "Shama and Baneen are preparing for, and looking forward to, further developing this project by learning to play chess and sharing their new skill as well as negotiate, plan, organise and deliver a chess tournament later in the year," Ms Henderson said. "These students are to be commended for their perseverance, patience, problem solving and high level communication skills."

A man in his fifties was airlifted to hospital after his car slammed into the back of a wood chipper truck in Cranbourne South on Wednesday 29 August. Police and ambulance were called to the crash on the Western Port Highway, at 7.25am. Police say the man was trapped in a Mazda 2 hatch where SES crews had to cut the roof off to free him. An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said the man was extricated and transported by air ambulance helicopter to The Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition. "The man had serious injuries to his legs and pelvis, and minor lacerations to his head and to his hands," she said. The driver of the truck, a man aged in his 30s, was taken to Frankston Hospital in a stable condition after suffering an injury to his chest. A Somerville Highway Patrol spokesman said the Mazda hatch had been "annihilated" after ramming into the back of the truck's trailer without braking. He said it's believed the truck was turning left into a driveway where another car travelling behind the truck had overtaken it. But police say the driver of the Mazda allegedly didn't see the truck and ploughed into the back of it. Police are investigating the incident. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Family at the centre A one-stop-shop community hub has opened in Cranbourne East - bringing together kinder, playgroups and Maternal and Child Health (MCH) services under a single roof. Minister for Early Childhood Education Jenny Mikakos joined Casey Mayor Cr Geoff Ablett and Cranbourne MP in visiting the Livingstone Family and Community Centre on Thursday 30 August to officially open the $5.7 million facility, which was built thanks to the Andrews Government. The new centre on Parkhurst Drive features three kindergarten rooms, two MCH consulting rooms, an internet cafe, a mini sports oval for children and community spaces such as meeting rooms, an outdoor courtyard and a kitchen for hire. The centre will be able to cater for 135 kindergarten places, with families able to access MCH services, playgroups, parenting programs, early childhood intervention services and other family services. The State Government provided the City of Casey $1.6 million for the centre through a Children's Facilities Capital Program major grant. Ms Mikakos she the State Government was giving little Victorians "the best start in life" with the "smartest investment we can make." "We're making it easier than ever for families to access the services they need to ensure their kids are ready for kinder, ready for school and ready for life," she said. Mr Perera said the centre will not only provide more kinder places and easier access to Maternal and Child Health services, but also playgroups and parent groups - "all under one roof," he said. City of Casey Mayor Geoff Ablett said the Livingston Family and Community Centre was an important facility to support Council to deliver services to families in Cranbourne East and surrounds.

Casey raises cup hopes By Brendan Rees

Opening the new Livingstone Family and Community Centre was from left, Labor candidate for Cranbourne Pauline Richards, Cranbourne MP Jude Perera, City of Casey mayor Geoff Ablett, Minister for Early Childhood Education Jenny Mikakos and Casey councillor Amanda Stapledon. Picture: CONTRIBUTED "Council has the challenge of ensuring new and growing communities have the infrastructure needed so residents can access important services close to home and have spaces to meet, learn, play and connect." he said. "The Livingston Family and Community Centre is a great example of how we're delivering on that important task. "While we're celebrating the official opening this week, the centre has been operating for a few months now, initially welcoming its

first cohort of kindergarten students before hosting Maternal and Child Health consultations and taking hire bookings for the community spaces," he said. A key feature is the public art entitled 'At Home On The Edge' by James Voller, which is a photographic installation constructed out of panels of Digiglass that place an image of a historic weatherboard house taken in the City of Casey into the contemporary architectural forms of the building.

One of the biggest junior soccer tournaments could be coming to Casey as early as next year. At their August 26 meeting, Casey councillors voted to consider hosting a Casey Cup 2019 with Casey Fields being their venue of choice. The event has gained huge popularity since it has began in Shepparton 11 years ago through the support of the Australian Football Skool. More than 1500 players competed in the 2016 Shepparton event over two action packed days involving 100 teams across all age groups from all over Victoria, interstate and overseas. Cr Amanda Stapledon said teams would be able participate in a competitive and respectful manner, adding to a carnival atmosphere. “The event has grown by 25 per cent each since 2014 (in Shepparton) and there are 220 teams that participate each year with 3000 players registered from ages six to 17 years of age - that’s boys, girls and all abilities,” she said.

Parents can now register their children for swimming lessons at the Kingswim Clyde North centre.

Kingswim believes that it''s crucial all children have access to swimming lessons.

Book for 2019 swimming Parents can now register their children for swimming lessons at the Kingswim Clyde North centre, which is opening in January 2019. The centre could not come soon enough for local parents as current wait lists for swimming lessons in the Casey Cardinia area continue to climb. Kingswim Business Manager Craig Dowsing said that despite a rapidly growing popula-

tion and demand for services, parents in and around Clyde "are still having to drive more than 10km to access swimming lessons, and of the few centres available, still face a long wait list." By offering 200 lessons per week, Kingswim Clyde North is hoping to see the hundreds of children currently missing out provided with a vital life skill. Mr Dowsing said the team is excited to pro-

vide local kids with the necessary skills to survive and thrive in the water. "For a country where 85% of the population lives within 50 km of the coast, it's crucial all children have access to swimming lessons," he said. "Last year saw a 20% increase in fatal drownings in Victoria compared to the 10-year average. It's our mission to change those statistics and ensure every child has the confidence and

ability to stay safe in the water, whether that be at the beach, river or in backyard pools." The new Kingswim facility will open in January 2019 within the Ramlegh Springs on Clyde Estate on Tuckers Road, Clyde North. Spots are set to fill up quickly and local parents are encouraged to visit Kingswim.com. au/clyde-north or call 5945 3265 to enrol their child's place.

GROW BUSINESS … Casey Cardinia Region

Finalists line up for a win The finalists for the 2018 Casey Cardinia Business Awards have been revealed, with 26 local businesses in the running across the 10 categories for the region’s flagship awards program. The awards are a partnership between the City of Casey and Cardinia Shire Council, held each year to recognise and celebrate the outstanding achievements and contribution of businesses and organisations across the region. City of Casey Mayor Cr Geoff Ablett congratulated the finalists at a special function held at the Cranbourne Golf Club on Friday 31 August. “Through our regional partnership, Casey and Cardinia coordinate a range of programs and events that support our local business community, encourage professional development and foster shared learning,“ Mr Ablett said. “Importantly these programs, including the CCBA, shine a light on the many successful businesses operating across the region. “The CCBA give recognition to those who are excelling in their fields, celebrate local business success stories and provide another platform to come together and strengthen the economic viability of the region. “Our local businesses provide invaluable local job opportunities for residents and expand the horizon for job seekers.“ Cardinia Shire Mayor Cr Collin Ross said the judges had a tough task in selecting the finalists. “This year there were more than 80 applications received and it was pleasing to see that many applications submitted were by businesses connecting with the program for the first time,” Cr Ross said. “The judges were impressed with the calibre of entries which reflects the diverse, thriving and quality business community that exists in this region - something we’re incredibly proud to be able to celebrate through this awards program each year.” All finalists are also in the running for the coveted Casey Cardinia Business of the Year award, an award Cr Ross said created a fantastic morale boost for the winner. “If you are Business of the Year people get very excited. I remember a couple of years ago at Cranbourne there was a whole group sitting on a table and they were amazingly excited. I’m sure when they went back to their workplace productivity went through the roof they were so excited about what they had achieved.“ The 2018 Casey Cardinia Business Awards finalists are: Business and Professional Services Successful Endeavours Ki Creative Melbourne Public Relations and Marketing Group

GROW BUSINESS … Casey Cardinia Region

Maria’s passion shines By Rebecca Skilton “Choose a job you love and you will never work a day in your life.“ Those are the wise words that CEO, creative director and lead designer of Fountain Gate’s Artelia Jewellery, Maria Ulas, is living by. But as the now businesswoman and jewellery designer explained, her life wasn’t always so, with a number of “trials and errors” leading to her dream career. “I did biomedical science at university and majored in microbiology and I was actually working at Monash Medical Centre but it was very hard-hitting,” Maria said. “I studied for five years before I realised, ‘oh my god, I’m just going to shrivel up if I stay here ... this isn’t me’.“ Having always considered her drawing and creativity “just a hobby“, Maria never considered her passion as a career path - until she met her husband, Robert. “(Robert) kept saying to me ‘you’re so creative’ and I would say; ‘no, I’m not...I’m supposed to be a doctor or a scientist, I’m not creative’,” Maria said. “He’s a master jeweller and it wasn’t until he went to Italy and brought back some enamel (that I considered it as a job). He literally came home and said; ‘design me a range, just try it. Just give it a go and see what happens’. So I did. “I designed this range and we took it to the Sydney Trade Show and it went absolutely crazy. It was overwhelming; the factory couldn’t keep up with the demand to get these pieces out. “It was that moment where I said, ‘okay, I see what you’re saying, let’s do this’. And the rest is history.” Following her decision for a career change, Maria worked alongside Robert at his jewellery manufacturing business, TWM co, but admitted something was still “lacking“. “I’m a very emotional person - I really go by energy and the meanings behind everything. “A family recipe and a piece of jewellery are really the two things we take with us in life from generation to generation - (that love) was one of those things I felt like I wasn’t getting when I was creating for business to business. So I thought, something’s calling me and I really need to do this,” Maria said. ‘This’ would become Artelia, which opened on 28 May 2017. Alongside her team, Maria offers “the finest diamonds, pearls and precious stones,” and considers the Artelia team to be the wedding and engagement ring specialists. Maria prides herself on the store’s bespoke approach and the fact that all pieces are designed and created in-house by herself and Artelia master jewellers. “(In the beginning) a lot of people would

CEO, creative director and lead designer of Artelia Jewellers, Maria Ulas. 181676 say; ‘have you got competition? How are you going to do this? How are you going to do this being a mum with kids?’ But I honestly don’t consider this work. When there’s enough of a drive to do something, it’s not work. There’s no other alternative at this point; this is where my heart is. My heart sings when I’m here,” Maria said. “I used (my two kids) younger years to prepare - people are always really surprised, especially family and friends. They’ll be like ‘where did you come from?’ and I say, ‘well this is what I’ve been up to in the last five years’. “But it’s taking every opportunity and not

thinking ‘I’m just going to sit here,’ which isn’t in me anyway. I used (the baby and toddler years) to my advantage, and then, when the time was right, I was ready to go.” Eager to keep learning, Maria is also studying gemmology with the Gemmological Association of Australia and dedicates more than three nights a week to her studies. She divides her time between her professional and personal life but does believe the love of her career has a positive influence on both herself and her family. “This is my weakness; the obsession. But I honestly think if you’re happy and your heart

is singing, your kids’ hearts will sing with you,” Maria said. “My advice to other women would be to not only live your best life but to bring out the best in yourself. “It’s so much easier to not do anything and sit back and take the back seat whereas we’ve got so much to give. We’re so special and we’re so hardworking, it’s ingrained in us. If there’s a dream, don’t waste time. And if you’ve got young children and you feel like right now I can’t, you can. All it is is mindset. If there’s something they want to do or a business they want to go for or achieve, just go for it.”

Let me guide you through the process so you can submit an application. I understand the language of government and business and have knowledge and experience that will improve your chances of success”.

NEWS

Teaching with animals By Jessica Anstice Students and teachers at Hillcrest Christian College in Clyde North welcomed five lambs, including a set of triplets and a pair of twins on Sunday, 19 August. The college's agricultural and horticultural students have been busy especially during lunchtimes caring for the new babies. "The animals are a great connection for our (mostly) city kids back to the farm," Hillcrest Christian College staff member Stuart Alsop said. "They get to have some real life experiences that increase their understanding of where their food comes from (though we don't eat the animals). "The ewes birthing has been a very exciting time for the students. Some were fortunate to see them giving birth and that's something that won't normally see during a school day." Mr Alsop said lots of students have little connection with nature and the cycle of life, so it's pretty special. "For some students, who don't have a pet at home, the sheep become a pet and they checkin with them to see how they are travelling. "It's a bit of school-based pets-as-therapy, so to speak." The process in which the students care for the animals involves a roster, created by their teacher. The students have to check their feed and water. Depending on the how much feed is available, and its quality, the students may have to give the animals some extra supplementary feed too. The students also collect eggs. Hillcrest Christian College has sold the eggs in the past and donated the money raised to the charity, TEAR. The college aim to start that program again in the near future. "Depending on the time of year, type of

"Another benefit is that having animals at school provides an opportunity for students to be more engaged and connected with their learning." Each year the college run the Cows Creates Careers program. It is a brilliant experience for students, as they have to be responsible for the daily feeding and care of some dairy calves, over a three-week period.

ENTERTAINMENT THRILL SEEKERS, BRACE YOURSELVES…

Do you think he saw us? These amazing creatures will be taking over St Kilda this September and October. Jurassic Creatures is an exhibition with over 30 + dinosaurs that will captivate young and old alike. Explore a prehistoric world full of life like moving dinosaurs and be amazed and thrilled as the greatest creatures ever to walk the earth return before your eyes and come alive. Marvel at the story of their 165 million year domination of life on earth.

Monster Jam, the larger-than-life sport is heading back to Melbourne, and this year it’s bigger, better, faster and stronger than ever! Standing nearly four metres tall and four metres wide, Monster Jam trucks are custom-designed machines that weigh around 5,500kgs. Built for short, high powered bursts of speed, the powerful Monster Jam beasts perform breathtaking stunts and can accelerate from 0-100kph in under 3 seconds. They literally fly! Monster Jam fans will be brought to the edge of their seats with adrenalinecharged and gravity-defying four wheeled entertainment at AAMI Park, Melbourne 20 October - 2pm and 7pm. Cranny’s uncertain future By Nick Creely Cranbourne's future remains up in the air after confirmation from AFL South East that it is unable to lodge an appeal against the outcome of the MPNFL Special General Meeting. It now means that the club will be unable to join the MPNFL in 2019, leaving the Eagles without a home at this stage. An email sent out to MPNFL clubs and to Cranbourne on Tuesday 4 September stated that "after receiving legal advice from AFL lawyers, Cranbourne were advised that the AFL Victoria Rules do not override the MPNFL Constituion in regards to the admission of new members to the league". Originally, the 22 clubs met on 29 August to vote as to whether the Eagles would become a member club, and the News understands they got around 11 votes, or 50 per cent, which is lower than the 17-5 - or 75 per cent required to bring new clubs into the MPNFL. As a result, Seaford will be relegated to Division 2 in 2019 and the winner of the Division 2 grand final will be promoted to Division 1. Cranbourne president Gerry Kelly recently told the News that the club believes its future lies on the Mornington Peninsula. "We've got history with the MPNFL - we played Mornington back in 1890, and we've got four Cranbourne representatives in the Mornington Peninsula Team of the Century. Cranbourne's footballers and netballers are still without a home for 2019. 184745 Dalgleish and Patty Garrett as well," he said. "That just proves where we belong, well from my view anyway. "We see ourselves being part of the Mornington Peninsula for the next 50 or 100 years." AFL South East region general manager John Anderson expressed his disappointment in the decision to the clubs, and said that he hopes the club can find a home in 2019.

"I'm devastated for Cranbourne, a community football and netball club like yourselves, that is now without a home," he said. "AFL South East will be working closely with the Cranbourne Football Netball Club to help determine the future direction of the club. "Cranbourne is a strong, proud and passionate club and will be a wonderful asset for the league where it participates in for 2019 and beyond."

The News understands that the Southern Football League - an option that has been floating around for the Eagles - is not a possibility, with the league understood to be comfortable with the current competition structure, meaning it is not looking to add any new clubs in the near future. It leaves the club with the possible option of joining up with the six SEFNL clubs who are joining the newly formed 'AFL Outer East'.

The Eagles fly into Southern’s Division 2 grand final By Hayley Wildes SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 2 - FINALS ROUND 2 The Doveton Eagles, in their first season back in Division 2, have progressed through to the big dance. Against Highett, a barnstorming first quarter set up the Eagles' win as they piled on 6.7 (43) to 0.0 (0). Highett simply had no answers for Doveton as former Melbourne Demons high-flyer Russell Robertson (five goals) dominated, while Nick Beer, Nick Battle and Darren Sheen (three goals each) also fired up forward. The Eagles eventually ran out 18.20 (128) to 10.9 (69) winners and will have the chance to make it back-to-back premierships in two weeks' time. Despite a slow start, Keysborough won through to the preliminary final after an inspired comeback win over Murrumbeena.

The Burras were down by 21 points at quarter time, but when Matthew Carnelley (six goals) kicked into gear, it was game over as he completely took over the game. Still trailing by two points at the final break, Keysborough slammed on five goals to zero in a dominant final term to run out 14.10 (94) to 10.10 (70) winners. The Burras will meet Highett in the preliminary final on Saturday at Jack Barker Oval. DIVISION 3 - FINALS ROUND 1 Minor premiers Springvale Districts won through to the grand final courtesy of a stirring come-from-behind win over Hampton Park. The Redbacks held a slender one-goal lead at the final break, but the Demons came roaring home booting five goals to one in the fourth term to claim a 9.7 (61) to 6.7 (42) win. Harley Primrose and Jackson Fry led the way for Hampton Park, who will have another chance to make it to the grand final in this

weekend's preliminary final. Endeavour Hills got off to a flying start against Ashwood in their semi final clash and despite inaccuracy in front of goal were too strong all day, claiming a 6.18 (54) to 4.7 (31) win. Daniel Cann and Brandon Cram were impressive for the Falcons. DIVISION 4 - FINALS ROUND 2 In a stunning fall from grace, Carrum Patterson Lakes - the Division 4 minor premier - was booted out of the finals in straight sets after falling to Lyndhurst in week one of the finals, and Cerberus on Saturday. Cerberus held Carrum Patterson Lakes to just one goal in the first term and went one better in the second to hold the top team scoreless. A 32-point half time lead was a valuable one, but it was far from over. Carrum Patterson Lakes fought hard in the third term, slotting

five majors, but Cerberus kept pace with four of its own. Cerberus scored five goals to two in the final term to book its place in the grand final with a 14.14 (98) to 8.2 (50) win. Jimmy Miller (seven goals) was unstoppable up forward for Cerberus, while Carrum Patterson Lakes, in a bitterly disappointing day, was led by Mitchell Swinton and Aaron Guy. EASTERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 1 - FINALS Rowville's promising season ended in disappointment after a second-half fadeout against Blackburn in their elimination final clash. With scores level at half time, the game appeared set up for a great finish but it wasn't to be as Blcakburn booted eight goals to three in the second half to claim a big win, 14.16 (100) to 9.8 (62). Mitchell Garner (two goals) and Nikolas Schoenmakers were best for the Hawks.

Devils crowned champions By Nick Creely Beaconsfield’s picturesque Holm Park hosted the South Eastern Womens Football grand finals on Saturday, with three teams lifting the premiership cup aloft after a trio of tense, entertaining deciders. The big match of the day - the Division 1 grand final between Eastern Devils and Seaford - went down to the wire with a mammoth crowd cheering on every tackle, mark and goal. The top two sides on the ladder were barely separated at half time, with the Devils scoring four points and holding the Tigers scoreless. With the pressure high and both teams struggling to find the ball in space, it was anyone’s game at the major break. Class and goal nous of some of the Devils’ biggest stars saw them kick two goals to one in the third term, and they held a comfortable nine point advantage with a quarter to play. The Tigers refused to give in and managed to scramble a goal with just three minutes left on the clock, but the Devils held firm and claimed back to back premiership titles, 2.5 (17) to 2.2 (14). Devils star Olivia Aing was the deserving recipient of the best on ground award for her brilliant performance. In the Division 2 decider, Bass Coast con28 STAR NEWS

firmed themselves as the number one team of the division after comfortably defeating Tyabb, 5.4 (34) to 2.8 (20). The Breakers maintained a steady lead for most of the day, but got the game winning break in a sublime second quarter that saw them kick two unanswered goals. For the Yabbies, they certainly had their chances and actually had more scoring shots, but left their run too late after kicking 0.8 in the first three quarters before kicking two last term goals. Kelly O’Neill put in a tremendous display to be awarded the best afield medal, and was a constant presence for four quarters for the Breakers. And Pearcedale provided perhaps the biggest shock of the day, claiming the Division 3 title after knocking off the highly fancied Hastings, 3.9 (27) to 3.1 (19). Incredibly, the Blues were the dominant team of the season and won five more games than the Panthers during the regular season to be undefeated and finished a whopping 22 points clear on the ladder. But the Panthers rallied late to kick two last quarter goals and claim a memorable win, with Katie Mitchell named best afield after dominating - particularly in the second half when the game was on the line.

New chapter on the green By Russell Bennett The Berwick Bowling Club marked the start of the new season with the opening of its new synthetic green recently. City of Casey Mayor Geoff Ablett and fellow shire councillor Susan Serey were in attendance for the opening day celebrations, which began with a luncheon enjoyed by more than 170 members - in addition to the official guests. This, of course, was followed by an afternoon game of bowls. As is tradition, current club champions Jean Fothergill and Tony French rolled the jack and first bowl of the season respectively, while being enthusiastically cheered on by the club members. The City of Casey council was thanked by Board Chairman Ed Wilson and Bowls Chairman Jeff Janetzkit for their contribution and continued support of the club - and in particular the new synthetic bowling green, which they had been invited to officially open. The City of Casey councillors in attendance both spoke of their admiration for the Berwick Bowling Club and its membership, and the contribution the club makes to the broader community. The club not only provides members with the opportunity to play Pennant and social bowls but also supports other areas of the wider community with school programs, programs for bowlers with disabilities, and has again been awarded responsibility by Bowls Victoria to run the Integrated Bowls Championship for 2019. The 'Barefoot Bowls' sessions continue to be very popular and the club runs events throughout the year for a large number of organisations including schools, businesses and various community groups.

Jean Fothergill, Cheryl Cairncross, Pat Ellis and Anne Lee prepared lunch for all those who attended the opening of the new synthetic green. 183873 Pictures: ROB CAREW City of Casey councillor Susan Serey on the green with Mayor Geoff Ablett. During the afternoon festivities more than $600 dollars was raised and will be donated to 'The Bridge', a service provided by the City of

Casey for disabled members of the community. The Bowls Victoria Pennant season is a few weeks away, with intra-club matches being

played at Berwick and against other competing sides in the coming few weeks as a lead up to the opening round.

The pressure at Pakenham was enormous on Sunday, and Beaconsfield's Riley Welsh felt the full force of this Zak Roscoe and Marc Holt tackle. 184745

Pictures: ROB CAREW

Rising for the occasion By Nick Creely SOUTH EAST FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE REVIEW - FINALS WEEK 2 Sunday was a challenge on many fronts. The rain, intensity of the contest and the cut-throat nature of the occasion. And it was the perfect time for Cranbourne - inspired by many of its youngest players - to find some much needed form, and to breathe life into its season. The 12.8 (80) to 8.9 (57) win against Beaconsfield was much closer than the final scoreboard suggests - Leigh McQuillen's side looked like they could have run over the top and stolen the win at any stage. But, the Eagles - who lost a key pillar in Troy Tharle early in the contest - dug deep and were gusty to the final siren, and put in an even performance across the board. Cranbourne coach Steve O'Brien is the first to admit his side hasn't re-captured its early season form in the last month, but was proud that his side could overcome another injury so early into a match to find their groove. "It's been a feature of us all year, it's been pretty common for us having injuries early in games - it obviously impacted, we weren't able to rotate our backs and forwards anywhere near as much as would," he said. "We weren't playing great footy leading in, and we had an open and honest week in review, and everyone took it on board, and their response was fantastic." The blockbuster clash at Toomuc Reserve was a hard grind for both sides, and finding free space was a tough task. Returning Beacy champ Scott Meyer started forward at the opening bounce, and within minutes, the classy young Bailey Morrish had found a small window to weave some magic and kick off the match with a major. But the Eagles quickly settled into the contest, with champion spearhead Marc Holt using his goal nous to slot two goals within minutes, and despite butchering some chances going forward, they took in a 15 point quarter time lead. 30 STAR NEWS

|

Berwick forward Harry Money was pumped after slotting a goal at Holm Park on Saturday. 184742 The pressure was extreme in the early exchanges of the second quarter, but McQuillen's side reversed the momentum, and after Riley Verbi powered through to kick a sublime goal from absolutely nowhere, they began to assert some control, but crucially couldn't make it count on the scoreboard as they reduced the deficit to just eight at half time. With the likes of leaders in Shaun Marusic, Luke Bee-Hugo and Ryan Davey lifting their rating in the third term, as well as big man Michael Wenn who played a terrific second half, the Eagles made the most of their chances going forward, and staved off plenty of attacking thrusts by their youthful opposition to score seven goals to four after half time and advance through to a preliminary final.

Thursday, 6 September, 2018

O'Brien said that the injury of Tharle forced his side to re-think but was pleased with how some of his young stars - such as Corey Ellison, Kyle Nunn, Bailey Buntine and Aaron Bower - managed to handle the occasion and rise to the challenge. Nunn was particularly eye-catching, and kicked one of the sealing goals in a dramatic final term that could have very easily gone either way. "We were forced to throw young Corey Ellison back and forward, and into the ruck, to give Wenny (Michael Wenn) a chop out, and he was sensational for a young kid - it did impact us, but the boys were able to overcome it," he said. "It was a really good sign - we looked a bit shaky at times in the second quarter, and that's probably partially to do with rotations, but we missed some gettable goals. "We've made no secret that we're in a bit of a transition and introducing some young players, and we had another two debutants on the weekend (Nunn and Anthony Burr), and they played their role." Cranbourne will now tackle Narre Warren in a preliminary final on Saturday, with the winner to take on reigning premier Berwick in the decider on 15 September. Just a day earlier, Berwick advanced through to yet another grand after overcoming a quality Narre Warren outfit, and they are now just one win away from successfully defending their premiership crown, 11.13 (79) to 9.13 (67). While the weather may have been stiflingly cold, there was no shortage of heat out in the middle as the two sides did battle for a place in the decider on 15 September. Both sides had their fair share of niggle early and the game seemed destined for a stoppage to stoppage slog, but Stewart Kemperman's side got the early ascendency when a suffocating bit of pressure brought about the first major. While big man Trent Shinners responded after converting his 50 metre penalty, the Wickers made the most of their chances and

owned the opening term, with Trent Thomas and Harrison Money - opposed to young star Ryan Quirk - kicking late goals to help their side surge out to a 13-point quarter time advantage. After the Magpies squandered some chances going forward in the second quarter, the Wickers' control once again seeped in, with Travis Tuck helping get the game back on terms with a blistering 15-minute period that included an extraordinary dash off half back in heavy traffic. Both sides continued to pressure the ball carrier, and after Hayden Stagg booted a team lifting goal, the dynamic Tim Gunn finished off the scoring in the half by nailing a major and giving his side a 14-point half time lead. But it was the third quarter that was breathtaking. They continued to run in waves and eventually broke the game apart with a devastating ten-minute period, slamming on four unanswered goals to bring the margin out to 38-points. Absolutely stunning the vocal Magpie crowd, the Wickers flexed their muscles, moving the ball with an incredible precision, with the likes of Bailey Asher, gun defenders Michael Riseley and Jo West, as well as Tuck, James Magner and Bryce Rutherford all having an enormous influence in particular. The Magpies ran out the game and could head their head high that they had the better of the final quarter to bring the margin back to 12 at the final siren after a Mitch Cox barrel sailed through after the siren, but the ability for the Wickers to professionally ice the clock and weather the storm was impressive. They now advance through to yet another grand final, something not lost on coach Stewart Kemperman. "I'm rapt for the boys - as a coach, we sort of want them to realise their potential. It's an ugly word, we haven't done anything yet, but we've given ourselves an opportunity to realise it," he told the News in the aftermath of the game. "I'm incredibly proud of them, and thrilled that they get the opportunity." cranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au

The Casey Cavaliers' victorious Big V Youth League 2 women's team. 184744

The Cavs claim the crown By Hayley Wildes For the Casey Cavaliers' Big V Youth League 2 women's team, season 2018 was all about the chance to create; create an environment conducive to success, create team chemistry and ultimately create some history. But, as head coach Brad Rooff explains, it was about much more than just that. "We want to live by the mantra of C.R.E.A.T.E," he said. "C stands for commitment, R for respect, E for effort, A for attitude, T for teamwork and E is enjoy - I said if we get the first five letters right, we'll enjoy it at the end and that is what it's all about." When the team was crowned 2018 Big V Youth League 2 women's champions on Saturday night, it's fair to say they enjoyed the moment. After all, they'd certainly earned it. Facing the Frankston Blues in a best-ofthree grand final series, the Cavs -who had taken all before them in a 16-2 regular season - claimed game one on the road last weekend, 80-67, and returned home on Saturday night to finish the job. In front of a raucous, 800-strong home crowd at Casey Stadium, the Cavs - despite their early struggles on offence - stayed in the game due to their trademark relentless defence driven by the likes of Steph Leclrec, Bec Jones and Lauren Tuplin. Rebecca Peacock's 11 first-quarter points were vital as she put points on the board when no one else could. Casey's second quarter offence wasn't much better - yielding just one-point in the opening 5:30 of the term. Still, they were just five points adrift of the Blues. A couple of Kim Shankland buckets got the team going on offence and at the main break a 35-32 deficit was the challenge facing the Cavs. As they have done all season, these Cavs relished and answered the challenge. With captain Tess Young bringing down rebound after rebound, the Cavs began the second half on an 8-2 run and when Tuplin - who was taking control of the game - hit a triple, the Cavs held a four-point lead. Casey weren't satisfied though. Their run continued and with just under four minutes to play in the quarter, Casey held a 52-41 lead on the back of a 20-6 run. To Frankston's credit, they responded with some big buckets of their own and Casey held a four-point lead with one quarter standing between them and the championship. The fourth quarter began with both teams cranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au

trading buckets and with 4:13 left on the clock, scores were tied at 73-all. With the crowd riding every play, you got the sense it was going to take something special to split the teams. That's exactly what the crowd got. Having surrendered the lead with oneminute to play, it was Rebecca Peacock who stepped to the fore and drained the biggest shot of the season. Peacock's triple from the top of the key gave the Cavs a two-point lead with 50 seconds remaining and Tuplin also rose to the occasion down the stretch with two clutch buckets to seal a memorable championship win for Casey, 89-84. Rebecca Peacock's impressive post-season was capped off with grand final series MVP honours after posting 23 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists in the most important game of the season. Superstar Lauren Tuplin - who is in with a real chance of claiming league MVP honours - was sublime with 22 points, 5 steals and 3 assists, while Tess Young (17 rebounds, 15 points, 4 assists) was enormous on both ends in an inspired effort. "It's always been the focus for us to stay strong defensively - everyone talks about the offensive structure, but defensively we wanted to make sure we made a statement." Championship-winning coach Rooff said. Rooff's team was focused on defence and it was the process that kept them going throughout the season. "This [win] is an end result and it's because we stayed true to ourselves the whole way through," he said. "We took it one game at a time and stepped it out - it wasn't a case of just having big plans, it was about having mini goals along the way that we needed to achieve." Rooff also talked about the importance of the home crowd and how his team fed off that energy. "Oh my goodness, it was just sensational how the crowd brought the noise," he said. "We went in at half time saying we've got the support of the crowd, we've got the support of our teammates; it's now or never - that's what it is all about." After claiming the Youth League 2 crown, the Cavs move up to Youth League 1 next season. That's a challenge Rooff and his squad is looking forward to. "There's a promising future here and we have aspirations of going in there and making some big noise in Youth League 1, so that's our goal."

In further Casey Big V news, the Division 1 women, after claiming the first game of their grand final series against Warrnambool, fell in games two and three at home over the weekend. Despite the disappointment of a grand final

loss, the Cavs fought valiantly all series and fell just short of a championship. Tanarly Hood led the way, tallying 34 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists over the two home games.

Coach Brad Rooff and captain Tess Young embrace after the win.
