Lukudu initially denied the stabbing or being at the party when being interviewed by police.

He had told a psychologist that he’d stabbed the victim because he was afraid the victim would grab Lukudu’s knife and attack him.

Judge Gamble said the victim was in no position to take the knife while Lukudu was wielding it with “such ferocity”.

Lukudu’s criminal history mainly comprised driving and public nuisance as well as assaults. He had not before committed anything of this magnitude, the judge noted.

Lukudu was jailed for nine years, with a six year, nine month non-parole period.

It included 553 days of pre-sentence detention since Lukudu’s arrest.

A Hallam man who critically injured another man by stabbing him 11 times outside a party in central Noble Park has been jailed.

Michael Lukudu, 31, pleaded guilty to intentionally causing serious injury and was sentenced in the Victorian County Court on 3 August.

Lukudu and a co-accused man had confronted and chased the then 24-year-old victim after Lukudu held a knife and threatened to slash the victim’s throat on Ian Street after 4am on 1 October 2016.

The co-accused men repeatedly punched the victim, before another male intervened.

Lukudu soon after pursued the same vic-

tim, and from atop of the fallen victim - in a position of “physical superiority” - stabbed him with “ferocity”, Judge Mark Gamble said.

After the “savage, cowardly and sustained attack”, he left the man to be tended by shocked witnesses.

The man suffered life-threatening injuries, including spending several days in intensive care and undergoing multiple blood tranfusions. Seven of the wounds were to the abdomen, one of the punctures to his chest pierced his lung.

He required 40 staples to his abdomen, with extensive plastic surgery expected in future.

Rising firey force

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Sheik Sulaiman is ever-grateful to this country.

In his words, "Australia saved my life".

That's why the Noble Park CFA firefighter volunteers, to give back to his community.

On 1 September, he will be giving his all for charity, taking part in a gruelling 28-floor stair climb in full fire-fighting and breathing gear.

The Melbourne Firefighter Stair Climb 2018 brings together 600 fireys from around Australia, climbing the height of Crown Metropol Hotel.

It aims to raise $700,000 for Lifeline and Black Dog Institute for support and research into post-traumatic stress, depression and suicide.

The funds particularly assist members of the emergency services and defence forces.

Mr Sulaiman first fled to Australia by boat as a refugee from Sri Lanka in 2009, and is no stranger to mental demons.

He's endured jail and torture in his homeland, as well as 18 months in Australian detention centres.

Because of an administrative error, he was sent back to Sri Lanka and incarcerated in 2010.

He re-applied successfully in 2012, with the support of the International Red Cross.

He gained permanent residency after further detention. With a change of government that has been downgraded to a temporary protection visa.

Mr Sulaiman is the last person to bear a grudge for attaining "freedom".

"Australia saved my life.

"That's why I had to give back something to this country and community.

"That's why I choose to become a fire fighter."

He's held a variety of jobs as a factory worker, cleaner and most recently in a supermarket.

Last year, he completed the 428-step charity climb in under seven-and-a-half minutes.

And with Noble Park CFA colleagues Nick Stannard, Abbas Abdollahi and Adam Keselj, he's lining up to do it again.

This spirited brigade was on the brink of closure several years ago. Now it's a vibrant melting pot of 60 volunteers from 17 nationalities.

They are called to up to 250 call-outs a year, often giving some relief and hope to people on the "worst day of their life".

"Noble Park is such a diverse community, just 30 per cent speak English as a first language," brigade captain Terence Sanford says.

"It really does assist us to have members

from as many different nationalities when you turn out to jobs."

Most of this especially young brigade is 2530 years old. Part of its appeal is that it's inclusive, family-based and team-oriented, Mr Sanford says.

As part of training, the brigade helps its enthusiastic recruits learn and practise English language skills.

They also learn a lot of other workplace skills - such as working in a team, in a structure and in a chain of command.

"Australia has a proud history of acknowledging volunteers," Mr Sanford says.

"And in this community - even with our diverse nationalities - they've taken that mantle."

Aged home's $1m revamp A Doveton aged care home has received State funding towards its $1 million upgrade.

Chestnut Gardens Aged Care Home's project includes replacing an old heating and cooling system, and installing an electronic security access system to individual quarters.

The home was allocated $748,853 from the Government's $10 million program to refurbish 38 facilities in Victoria.

Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said Chestnut Gardens played a "key role" providing care for local senior citizens.

"This funding will help make sure their amenities are up to scratch."

Housing, Disability and Ageing Minister Martin Foley said the Significant Facility Refurbishment Initiative would help homes make "necessary upgrades" for residents' quality of life.

Social housing tenders open Tenders have opened for a private social housing development on vacant Government land in Noble Park.

The site at 30-40 Athol Road has been earmarked for an Inclusionary Housing Pilot, which has a mix of social housing, affordable housing and private housing.

The State Government said a minimum of 100 social housing dwelling's would be built across the Noble Park site and five other locations across Melbourne.

Expressions of interest close on 6 September, with the preferred bidder announced in late October.

"We are building brand new, properlydesigned housing close to services, jobs and transport - offering fantastic opportunities for redevelopment," Planning Minister Richard Wynne said.

Stickers for Hitler

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A racist, neo-Nazi youth movement has targeted Dandenong with the plastering of propoganda stickers in public places.

On 28 July, Antipodean Resistance posted photos on social media in late July of its stickers in Harmony Square and a Halal butcher's sign in Lonsdale Street.

The same account shows posts of stickers being plastered at universities, train stations and other public places across Melbourne and Australia.

Recent posts have illustrated sticker activities at Swinburne University, Monash University, Ferntree Gully, Boronia and Brighton.

Greater Dandenong Council stated it had not been aware of the sticker campaign in its midsts.

Its city planning, design and amenity director Jody Bosman said putting up the stickers without permission was an offence under the Environment Protection Act. "If Council does become aware of any such material appearing in this municipality, we will investigate and take the appropriate action."

A Victoria Police spokesperson said social media had increased the public profile and online presence of "these groups".

"We respect the right of the community to express their views peacefully and lawfully, however, urging violence and hatred is not a form of free speech that the community or Victoria Police will tolerate."

The Executive Council of Australian Jewry strongly condemned Antipodean Resistance and its "repugnant" ideas.

Co-chief executive Alex Ryvchin said the Antipodean Resistance supported the overthrow of democratic institutions and the murder of Jews and gay people.

Neo-Nazism should be combated by education, so people could comprehend the "unique barbarism" of the Nazis and their crimes, he said.

"It is not clear whether this group is content to advocate violence and plaster posters or will adopt violence themselves.

"Given how extreme their ideology is and the violence perpetrated by similar groups in the United States and Europe, they should cer-

tainly be of concern to the public."

Executive Council of Australian Jewry research officer Julie Nathan said the group called for an end to "non-white immigration" and blamed societal ills on "the Jews".

Its members had connections to far-right extremist groups in Australia and overseas, such as the United Patriots Front leaders via the Lads Society.

"Antipodean Resistance openly aims to lay the groundwork for a forcible Nazi take-over of Australia at a later time.

"They have no illusions that they could ever win a democratic election.

"At present, the group is making its existence known through its propaganda activities, is recruiting members across the country, and is engaged in activities to promote Nazi ideology."

The small, secretive group had spread through Australian capital cities since forming in Melbourne in October 2016, Ms Nathan said.

It targeted white males in their teens and twenties by putting up posters at high schools and universities, they said.

In photos and videos on their website and posts, members hid their identities in photos and videos with superimposed "death-head" masks.

"Its members try to remain anonymous, although a small number of them have been publicly exposed."

Antipodean Resistance was emailed for comment.

Warrant for Madafferi’s arrest A warrant has been issued to arrest Vince Madafferi over traffic and drug-related allegations, police say.

The 51-year-old is described as 172 centimetres with blue eyes, thin build and black, greying hair.

Madafferi is known to frequent Clayton South, Dandenong and Cranbourne, police say.

An image of Madafferi has been released by police in the hope of locating him.

Still wanted by police Police are trying to locate a man wanted in relation to handling stolen goods.

Benjamin Still, 30, is described as 180 centimetres, with a thin build, blue eyes and orange hair and beard.

A warrant has been issued for Still’s arrest.

Male spotted at suspicious fire A male wearing a long coat and thongs was seen running from a suspicious fire at a home’s front garden at Springvale Road, Springvale.

A passing-by concrete-truck driver used his truck’s hose to extinguish the fire that had spread into a bush about 6.30pm on 6 August.

A male described as Asian in appearance, 25-30 years old and about 160 centimetres fled from the scene.

A 90-year-old woman has stirred from bed and found a burglar inside her Noble Park home.

About 8pm on 3 August, the male wearing a cap jemmied his way into the rear of the Callender Road residence and turned on the lights.

The resident got out of bed, spotted the burglar and yelled at him to leave the house.

The intruder fled, stealing a wallet containing about $200 and bank cards.

A history project that celebrates Springvale's former Enterprise Migrant Hostel has been recognised on the global stage.

Greater Dandenong Council's Spirit of Enterprise Project was recognised for its outstanding contribution to culture at the United Cities and Local Government Awards in Mexico City.

It was the only Australian project recognised in the awards.

Though missing out on the overall title, the project was singled out by the Awards jury as an example of good practice.

The history project started with a group of local volunteers compiling an exhibition at the Immigration Museum in 2008.

It told the extraordinary story of the hostel, which with the enthusiastic help of locals, housed and provided settlement services to more than 30,000 migrants and refugees until 1992.

One of the volunteers Merle Mitchell said the project then expanded over the next decade.

It grew into a walking trail of significant sites that marks the significant contributions of migrants and refugees in Springvale.

"It just grew and grew and grew," Ms Mitchell said.

"The community wouldn't let us stop. They said you've got to do something else."

The world citation was important recognition for the "whole of community" effort, she said.

"It's really important at this time to remember the contribution that people have made.

"To go to the site and write people's stories, you realise how much they have contributed to our community."

The Enterprise Hostel still stands for a unifying message, Ms Mitchell says.

"People felt welcomed. It was a welcome that told people that everyone was pleased you're here.

"Keep your language, keep your tradition, keep your faith - you are part of the whole."

Greater Dandenong mayor Cr Youhorn Chea said the project was a fantastic community project, with many people contributing to its success over the years.

"Merle Mitchell and the team from the Spirit of Enterprise are to be commended for their ongoing contribution to culture in this city through initiating and delivering this project.

"I would also like to acknowledge the role Council staff has played in supporting the delivery of this project."

Police detected a white Holden sedan travelling at 120km/h on the South Gippsland Freeway, Dandenong South just after 3am on Wednesday 1 August .

After passing police the vehicle sped up to 174km/h before it was stopped on the Monash Freeway in Dandenong.

The offending driver returned a positive drug test, pending forensic analysis.

He is expected to be charged on summons and will appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court at a later date.

Homeless getting a hand

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Dandenong has been earmarked for new 'assertive outreach' teams to help people sleeping rough.

It is one of eight regions of 'high need' that are targeted by the State Government's $19 million program, which is currently open to tender.

The outreach workers would actively seek out and engage with homeless people, and provide rapid access to emergency accommodation, health services and ongoing case management.

Dandenong will also be home to a supportive housing team that helps particularly those who have been chronically homeless to remain in housing.

Kelly welcomed the positive moves to further help at least 50 people sleeping rough on any one night in Dandenong.

"We know we have got people camping in Bunyip State Park and that is what they can afford."

According to Australian Bureau of Statistics estimates in 2016, there were 437 children who were homeless in Greater Dandenong.

It estimates that homelessness in the local council area rose by 28 per cent since 2011.

Ms Kelly said wrap-around support services were needed to not just house, but "rebuild" lives for homeless people.

"When you become homeless, you lose your social contacts, your work, your room and your mate. It's very embarrassing.

"A lot withdraw from the norm. Your perspective changes, your trust changes so it

needs a rebuild to come back in the fold."

Housing service WAYSS also received extra funding over four years to expand its afterhours refuge support for victims after serious family violence incidents.

The 24/7 refuge service has been running in response to findings by the 2016 Royal Commission into Family Violence.

Ms Kelly said staff were on-call at all hours to help shelter women and children in emergency accommodation.

"The big push now is to not remove the women and children from the property.

"Rather, if things can be worked out, mum and the kids can go back with sufficient security in place, such as intervention orders.

"That would be ideal because children don't want to be moved around. And the women and

children haven't done anything wrong."

Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said the assertive outreach and supportive housing teams would help reach more people at risk of homelessness and provide ongoing support.

"Homelessness is complex and often intertwined with a range of other issues, which can sometimes make it hard for people to ask for help."

Housing, Disability and Ageing Minister Martin Foley said the teams were a "targeted and holistic way" to tackle homelessness.

"We are looking at new ways to provide integrated services that help people with all of their needs, with a greater focus on prevention and early intervention, rather than a crisisdriven response."

A beautician fond of pokies and the Mimco fashion label is facing a series of drug trafficking and proceeds-of-crime charges.

Natalie Vrankar, 34, and a co-accused were discovered by police lying back in the seats of a hired white Mitsubishi ASX wagon in a Dandenong North driveway about 2.40am on 18 July, a court bail hearing was told.

While police searched the wagon, Vrankar allegedly threw a black Mimco bag over the neighbour's fence. It was filled with deal bags of heroin, amphetamine and 14 grams of meth.

From the wagon, police also allegedly seized 2.42 grams of meth in bags, scales, deal bags, a 'tick book' and a book with credit card details.

A large amount of hair products, Mimco jewellery, nail care products and make-up was

also discovered, which police claim are proceeds-of-crime.

Vrankar allegedly told police she bought the Mimco jewellery for $150 from an unknown person at Keysborough pokies; the two large containers of hair products from Gumtree, the court heard.

The make-up was hers, as was the nail products that she used on her friends as her "cash job", she allegedly said.

She was also found with $5215, which she claimed to have won on the pokies several weeks ago, Dandenong Magistrates' Court heard on 6 August.

She couldn't give specifics about the win, police told the court.

"I gamble. I love going to the pokies," she allegedly said.

She was bailed on strict conditions including a night curfew, a fixed address in Drouin, not associating with the co-accused, not using drugs and complying with a CISP supervisedbail program, including counselling and treatment.

Mr Muling decided against banning Vrankar from entering gambling venues.

Vrankar was bailed to appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 5 September.

Soup kitchen rapist jailed

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Dandenong soup kitchen volunteer who repeatedly restrained, raped, mutilated and tortured a female colleague for three days including abducting her interstate in a car boot in 2011 has been sentenced by the Victorian County Court.

Darin Wheeldon, 42, had met his victim at the soup kitchen and was taken in as a boarder at her home because “she clearly felt sorry for you”, Judge Lisa Hannan said on 9 August.

Wheeldon, hurt that his desires for the victim weren’t reciprocated, set out on prolonged

and somewhat planned offending that began at the victim’s home and ended in a NSW motel room.

During the abduction, Wheeldon stole the victim’s car, credit cards, money and phone. It ended when she escaped from being bound in a motel-room cupboard while Wheeldon was out.

In a victim impact statement, the victim described being still marked by the event for the past seven years.

She had made it through by the “grace of God” and the support of people who loved her.

Judge Hannan described her as “brave and

dignified”; the events that “degraded and humiliated” her still “ripple” through the victim and her children.

She noted Wheeldon had no issues with illicit drugs, alcohol or psychotic illness but a long history of violent convictions.

He was likely fueled by a “severe personality disorder” and showed a lack of insight and “superficial remorse”, the judge noted.

In 2012, Wheeldon was found guilty by a NSW jury and jailed for up to 11 years for the NSW-based offences, with a non-parole period of seven years.

In his Victorian County Court trial this year,

Wheeldon initially pleaded not guilty - causing the victim to re-read her statement and re-live the event, Judge Hannon noted.

On the second hearing date, he pleaded guilty to false imprisonment, intentionally causing injury, theft and four counts of rape.

Judge Hannon added nine further years to make a total 20 years imprisonment, with a 14year non-parole period.

It means Wheeldon is eligible for parole in seven years, 144 days.

He will be a registered sexual offender for life.

Big ideas fill the Drum stage with power

Woorana Park Primary School students organised the third annual event to inspire peers in their region to "rise beyond their postcode".

It featured a stellar cast of guest speakers including AFL great Simon Madden, Dande-

nong MP Gabrielle Williams and Real Schools founder Adam Voight.

They were joined by a psychologist, culture-change consultants, a kidpreneur, an educational technologist, a travel/fashion blogger, an education researcher and a change architect.

Lucy, a Woorana Park student, said she was particularly inspired by Mr Madden.

"He said that lots of people were being negative about him, but he kept on going.

"It's OK to say I can't do it. As long as you say I can't do it yet".

Another student Mingjia said: "They told stories of the past and made us look forward to the future.

"They taught us to have a good character and how to be a great leader."

100 years ago 15 August 1918 Dandenong High School It is with pleasure we announce that the proposal to establish a High School at Dandenong has been carried to a successful issue, in as much as a reply has been received by the Dandenong shire council, from the Director of Education, intimating that the department had accepted the offer of the municipality to provide a site on Melbourne Road for the High School and to raise £1000 (£750 for the land and £250 towards the cost of the buildings to be erected). A nominal deposit has already been paid in order to secure the site referred to. All who took an active interest in the movement are entitled to credit, and, those who failed to do so, will doubtless

soon realise that the establishment of a High School at Dandenong can mean nothing else but the advancement of the town and district.

Likewise, Muslim communities are being generalised as terrorists due to the actions of the few.

It is rather worrisome that we appear to be departing from traditional humility and humanity.

We rather become unkind, and see our-

selves as simply better than migrants.

We are quick to assume our fellow newly arrived migrants as unintelligent; we see them as not resourceful, as slow learners and expect them to integrate overnight into Australian society.

Most newly arrived migrants and refugees have limited knowledge of technology and the internet which are strongly required to secure employment.

These demands re-traumatise rather than empower migrants.

It hampers their integration, renders them less hopeful of reaching their full potential and widens the gaps between them and us.

The generalising of the majority for the actions of the few is not in the Australian tradition.

It does not fit the 'Advance Australia Fair' notion enshrined in our national anthem and our democratic and social justice system.

With the exception of Indigenous Australians, Australia is a land of migrants.

It is a multi-faith nation and one of the few places on Earth that is promising a 'fair go' for all, if we choose to judge each other on the contents of our characters instead of ethnicity or colour.

It is not too late to change our attitude and make our fellow brothers and sisters feel welcome so they can integrate positively.

We can do so by shifting our arrogant words and actions to being kind, to being thoughtful and to being humble.

Think about who taught you to become strong or who you are today.

At the end of the day, we are only on this Earth for a short period of time.

It is only the actions, words and kindness of good Samaritans like you and I that would best be remembered and respected than the deeds of the arrogant.

Four teens charged over carjacking

Worker shot as he runs from hold-up

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Springvale South servo attendant has been shot as he tried to flee during an armed robbery, police say.

The 40-year-old man was shot in the arm during the incident at the 7-11 service station on Springvale Road and MacKay street just before 4.30am on 8 August.

He was taken to The Alfred hospital in a stable, non-life-threatening condition.

He was being treated for non-life-threatening injuries at The Alfred hospital, Inspector Michael Daly of Victoria Police said.

"Needless to say he's extremely shook up and extremely upset by the incident.

Inspector Daly said the shooting of a weapon during the incident was a "high level of escalation by the offender".

"Any offence involving a firearm is of great concern to us.

"They're a danger to society, and the community can be reassured we're doing everything we can to locate this offender."

The front doors at the store are usually locked as a security precaution, but were opened for a waiting male customer, Inspector Daly said.

The robber seized that opportunity, pushing aside the customer and entering the store.

The attendant was mopping the floor when confronted by the robber with a hand-gun.

He was shot as he attempted to flee to the rear of the store, Inspector Daly said.

It was too early to ascertain if the robber was working alone, Inspector Daly said.

"Given the distance between the two addresses was approximately 1.5 kilometres and the timing about 15 minutes apart, it would be reasonable to suspect a vehicle was involved."

Witnesses described a hand-gun being used in both incidents.

There was also matching descriptions of the offender - 180 centimetres, wearing a grey hoodie with a white logo, black trackpants and black-and-white runners.

On both occasions, a bandana covered the robber's face.

He unsuccessfully tried to open the till at both servos, and fled empty-handed each time.

Four teenagers have been charged over an alleged carjacking of a woman in Hutton Street, Dandenong.

The 45-year-old victim was approached by three females as she stood at the boot of her white Mazda CX3 just before 5pm on 7 August, police say.

As she got in the driver's seat, she was allegedly struck in the face by one of the teenagers and pulled from the car.

The offenders then drove away in the car, police say.

Shortly after, they allegedly stole cigarettes and assaulted an attendant at a supermarket at Ormond Road, Narre Warren.

Police intercepted the car with the trio and a teenage boy on board at Mulgrave shortly before midnight.

A 17-year-old Clyde girl is expected to be charged with carjacking, evading police, assault and theft.

She was bailed to appear at a children's court.

Two Doveton females, aged 15 and 18, are expected to be charged on summons with carjacking, theft, assault and evading police.

A 16-year-old Thomastown boy is expected to be charged on summons with the theft of a motor vehicle.

Soft road to future

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A children's grief counsellor must use a canny bag of tricks - superheroes, soft toys and gentle conversation.

Susan Mathew, of Dandenong North, is in the delicate business of treating primaryschool aged children.

She leads a GriefLine support group for up to five kids in Melbourne's South East suffering the traumas of family violence or a parent or sibling's terminal illness.

Along the way, there are movie nights, fun activities and group interactions that untangle issues such as schoolyard bullying, low selfesteem and floundering social skills.

Children are vulnerable, but they are also responsive to ways to build their resilience, Ms Mathew says.

Some of the tools are positive self-talk, having a soft toy to talk to, and taking inspiration from a superhero film.

When another family member is terminally ill, the child can feel a range of grief, guilt and worthlessness, Ms Mathew says.

"The parents are always going to medical appointments and full of worries - and this child feels left out. This leads to anger in them and potentially rebelliousness.

"The main method of this program is to give them a safe place to explore these emotions. It's OK to feel these emotions, it's normal, and they can talk to other children in the same predicament."

The children's support group is a six-week program on Tuesdays from 4.30pm-5.45pm, held at GriefLine's office in Moorabbin. It is funded by The Tucker Foundation. Cost is by donation.

Watchdog is targeting stormwater Tonnes of improperly-stored wood pulp sheets at a Springvale business have been cleaned up as part of a Environmental Protection Authority pilot program.

The two large piles of baled wood pulp was breaking apart like sheets of paper, David Mellor, who Dandenong's Officer for the Protection of Local Environment.

"The wind blew the loose sheets around the neighbouring area and rain turned the sheets into wet pulp," he said.

"We had complaints from residents, so I attended the business to inspect."

The business agreed to remove the piles which otherwise could have decomposed and clogged nearby stormwater drains, Mr Mellor said.

As an OPLE, Mr Mellor's focus was on improving and safeguarding stormwater quality in Greeater Dandenong.

"Businesses need to ensure they are looking at the operations on their sites to ensure they are mitigating pollution and waste issues.

"Ensuring management of dust, noise, waste and stormwater issues is good business practice."

He is one of 11 OPLEs in the state embedded within local councils, as part of the pilot until July 2019.

Bomb scare over item at tow yard

New hope for PSD fix for school kids

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A pilot program may unlock long-awaited change for hundreds of school students with disabilities and special needs.

Emerson School and Doveton College are among more than 100 schools taking part in what the State Government says is a "worldleading" six-month pilot to assess learning needs of their students.

It comes as a result of a review into the maligned Program for Students with Disabilities - a blunt criteria that excluded scores of students with special needs from extra classroom help such as teacher aides.

The new assessment focuses on students strengths and educational needs, rather than what they can't do, says Emerson School principal John Mooney.

He said it married well with his school's philosophy of providing an "agile" curriculum so each student could individually flourish.

The need for change was underlined by the specialist school's 300-plus students being referred from 182 schools across the state.

Mr Mooney said there was also a need to streamline the "paralysing red-tape" and multitude of assessments for each child.

The amount of work to assess each new child being referred - up to seven a day - was "gobsmackingly anaethetising".

"We're constantly measuring - there's more to life than measuring."

Mr Mooney told of a student who was "three points" above the PSD's eligible IQ criteria.

His mental health suffered at a mainstream school, before he was enrolled at Emerson.

A police bomb response unit was called to a suspicious item found in Dandenong South.

The item was inside a vehicle at a towing company in Kirkham Road, Dandenong South on 9 August.

Officers found the item just before 10am, cordoned off the area and conducted safety checks.

By 1pm, police declared the area was safe.

Old workers ham it up

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Dandy Bacon doesn't just live on with the neon pig sign on top of Dandenong Market.

It is still a byword with workers who created the revered rashers - even 35 years after the Gippsland Co-operative Bacon Curing Company factory closed.

After all this time, more than 60 former employees will get together again for a muchanticipated reunion.

One of the proud organisers Stuart Wood said the factory was the "start of Australian bacon".

It was the bedrock of many families, provid-

ing a job for more than 300 at its peak.

And it was iconicised by the giant neon 'Dandy Hams & Bacon' pig that dominated the Lonsdale Street vista.

Mr Wood says the sign should be heritage protected, being just as significant as the Richmond 'skipping girl' sign.

"I can remember when I came home from Pakenham with my father driving the car.

"I'd be thinking there's the Dandy pig, never thinking that I would be working there."

The sign was donated to the council, but came so close to being consigned to the garbage heap.

Former maintenance worker Ron Chivers remembers spotting it in the tip, and telling the council: "You better get down here with a scrubbing brush."

Three years since the last reunion, Mr Wood has been hitting the phones to bring the old gang back together.

He's amazed that all of them still live on, even those into their 90s.

"It must have been something in the bacon," he quipped.

Accused shoplifter calls in crook with Crohn’s Disease

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A woman who claimed she'd been recently on her hospital "death bed" due to Crohn's Disease has been refused bail over an alleged shoplifting spree with her boyfriend.

Jade Emery faced a Dandenong Magistrates' Court bail hearing on 6 August on 13 charges including burglary, theft, failing to answer bail, breaching a corrections order as well as possession of testosterone, anabolic steroids and 'ice'.

When asked to prove 'exceptional circumstances' for her release, Emery initially had nothing to say.

She claimed she hadn't received medication in her cells, and that she'd been hospitalised on several occasions with Crohn's disease.

"If I don't get the medication I will die."

She was withdrawing from meth, she told the court.

Emery produced two medical certificates to explain her absences from court in April and May. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted Emery and her boyfriend Troy Olierook allegedly committed shoplifting in Wonthaggi when she should have been in court on 2 June.

"So you can't have been in hospital (then).

It's impossible."

Emery stood accused of stealing a $1499 Samsung Galaxy Note phone from David Jones in Chadstone in November.

She and Olierook were also charged with stealing more than $1000 of power tools from a

Bunnings store at Wonthaggi on 2 June.

The same afternoon, Emery allegedly took a storeroom key from behind the electronics counter at Big W at Wonthaggi.

She loaded $4389 of Nintendo and PlayStation goods from the backroom into a Target store trolley, police told the court.

Also in June, she and Olierook allegedly stole $2500 of goods from a JB Hi-Fi back room at Fountain Gate, and $1294 of laser-level equipment from a Bunnings store in Keysborough.

None of the goods stolen in June were recovered, police remand liaison officer Sergeant Roger Williams told the court.

The co-accused couple were allegedly captured on CCTV camera at each of the stores, he said.

Emery was also charged with possession of meth, steroids and testosterone seized during a police raid of Olierook's home in Dandenong North in February.

On 5 August, she was arrested on two bench warrants for failing to appear in court - as well as the four most recent shop thefts.

Mr Vandersteen told Emery that there were "doctors at prison (that were) more than capable" to deal with her illness.

Emery was remanded to appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 28 August.

In a separate hearing, Olierook did not apply for bail and was remanded to appear at Dandenong Drug Court on 16 August.

He was also set to face Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 21 August on the shop-theft allegations.

Ben’s closed eyes opened

By Garry Howe Losing 98 per cent of his eyesight overnight when still in his teens actually opened Ben Pettingill’s eyes to the limitless opportunities that life can bring.

Ben told the Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce business breakfast on 27 July that he had discovered what he terms as True Vision, which helped him deal with the situation he was faced with when diagnosed with a rare genetic syndrome, Lebers Hereditary Optic Neuropathy.

He said that losing all but two per cent of his eyesight overnight at 16 had taught him to get to know people from the inside out.

Ben explained that one day at school he got a headache and, sitting up the back of the class with his best mate Stuart, noticed that the instructions on the board were hard to make out.

He was soon in hospital and couldn’t see when he woke up the next day.

“It took two months to sink in,” he said. “I was in utter denial.”

It was a hit on the head that rammed the message home. Walking through the schoolyard one day, he hit his head on a pole and realised then and there that he had to accept the cards dealt to him in life.

“I realised at that point, lying on the ground, that I wouldn’t get to see my future bride walk down the aisle or my future kids smile for the first time,” he said.

“Everyone in this room has a situation they must control in their lives and all situations are unique,” he said. “This is the one I had to deal with.

“It hit me in the face that I had to accept that it had happened.”

Ben explained that 83 per cent of all the information we take in is through two eyes.

He said that now he had discovered True Vision, he no longer made judgements based on appearance.

“I learned to get to know people from the inside out,” he said. “If you see people from the inside out, the disability doesn’t exist.”

He explained that one in five people in Australia lived with a disability and that most people associated that with a wheelchair, because that’s what the sign depicts on the toilet door.

“The fact is that 4.4 per cent of those with a disability are in a wheelchair,” he said. “The rest of us look like the other two images on the toilet door (male and female figures).”

Ben said he not longer took challenges at face value.

“Things might be more difficult, but they are not impossible,” he said.

Since losing his sight, Ben has taken on several bucket list challenges.

He became the first person to complete the grueling Spartan Obstacle Race untethered.

In September last year he walked the Kokoda Track with the help of his partner Amy Savage - a 96-kilometre journey over seven days

that he described as the hardest and best thing he had done in his life.

A passionate water skier since childhood, he has competed for the past two years in the Southern 80 event on the Murray River, the first year in a disabled category and the second in open company.

Ben says developing True Vision made anything possible - and the possibilities limitless.

“It’s about transforming a limited life into a limitless life,” he said.

Award recognition for Supergroups and Telford Smith The Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce Business Awards have another two strong contenders.

Successful local enterprises Supergroups and Telford Smith were added to the nominations at the chamber’s July business breakfast at Punt Hill in Dandenong.

Supergroups is the largest Kubota Construction dealer in Victoria and has the largest market share in the small to medium size excavator market in the world.

The company has only ever sold one brand and dedicated 100 per cent of the service to the support of Kubota.

Supergroups has seven factory-trained mechanics who service customers all over Victoria and a dedicated spare parts department and these two streams have built an excellent reputation with customers.

Supergroups is entering an exciting new phase of development. It recently purchased new premises in Hallam and will move from three separate sites to the larger one, combining all the operatiions under one footprint.

Telford Smith has provided high end machinery to manufacturers in the plastic, wood and paper industries since the 1920s, starting in South Melbourne, then moving to Mulgrave, Keysborough and the current Dandenong site.

Stephen Picone, a loyal employee for 20 years, and wife Margaret were offered the opportunity to purchase the business in 2000 and it is now a family affair, with one son David heading up the sales and marketing division and another son Michael overseeing manufacturing in Zhoushan, China.

The decision to move manufacturing to China was made after the CFC led to a reduction in sales growth of up to 70 per cent in 2009. Telford Smith has since expanded operations, moving to a third location, has tripled the number of staff and has maintained five to 10 per cent sales growth.

The business now exports worldwide, representing 50 per cent of all sales, to the likes of USA, England, Ireland, Poland, Columbia, Thailand, Indonesia and Hong Kong. There are plans to eventually open an office in Europe.

The Youth Enterprise Award nominee was Cong Minh Vu from Dandneong, who is completing a Certificate IV in English as Another Language course.

Minh came to Australia from Hanoi in March 2015 and couldn’t speak a word of English. He is now fluent in the language and is using his new communication skills to help further a passion for photography.

He manages to study while working fulltime as a school cleaner.

The Journal will publish some of Minh’s photography work in upcoming editions.

Dearest bits Urologist Philip McCahy of the South East Vasectomy Clinic is encouraging men to visit their GPs and urologists when facing issues with the “nearest and dearest parts of their bodies.”

“As a urologist, I frequently deal with blokes worried about what may be normal or may be a significant problem,” Mr McCahy said.

“The biggest worry for most men in this area is testicular cancer. Though rare, it is the commonest cancer in young men with most cancers presenting between 15-40 years.

“Tumours appear as hard lumps which is why self-examination is a recommended. The good news is that early diagnosis results in almost complete cure, and even late presenting cancers can have very good results.

“Lance Armstrong, before certain pharmacologically enhanced bike rides, was the poster boy for testicular cancer survival.”

Mr McCahy explained that other lumps that can appear in the scrotum include epididymal

cysts, hydrocoeles and varicoceles.

“Most chaps will get very small cysts in the epididymis (the very tightly coiled tube behind the testicle that carries sperm towards the vas deferens) and nothing needs to be done. When these cysts become bigger than the testicle itself it is worth considering seeing a urologist.

“Hydrocoeles are sacs of fluid surrounding the testicle and small collections are common.

When big (and they can be as large as a football), surgery is recommended. Varicoceles are varicose veins that surround the (mostly left) testicle and are very common. There are various ways of repairing them if they become unsightly or painful.

“If there are any concerns with the scrotum it is important to see your GP and urologists are happy to provide advice and chat about treatment options. Don’t be scared.”

The ATO is advising taxpayers that they may request proof that you were required to undertake the travel for work.

“A good way to check that your travel claim relates to your work is to ask yourself - did your employer require you to do that travel as part of your duties, or did your employer require you to transport bulky tools or equipment to and from work?”

The ATO is particularly concerned about taxpayers claiming for things they are not entitled to, like private trips, trips they didn't make, and car expenses that their employer paid for or reimbursed.

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has announced that it will be closely examining claims for work-related car expenses this tax time as part of a broader focus on work related expenses.

Assistant Commissioner Kath Anderson said over 3.75 million people made a workrelated car expense claim in 2016-17, totalling around $8.8 billion.

“That’s a lot of money and Australians expect us to ensure people are not over-claiming,” she said.

“We are particularly concerned about taxpayers claiming for things they are not entitled to, like private trips, trips they didn’t make and car expenses that their employer paid for or reimbursed.”

There are two ways to calculate a deduction for car expenses - the cents per km method which is limited to claims for work-related travel up to 5,000 kms and using a log book to determine the work-related percentage of actual expenses incurred.

Each year around 870,000 people claimed the maximum amount under the cents-perkilometre.

“It’s legitimate to claim for 5,000 kilometres if you did actually do them as part of earning your income.

“However, we are concerned that some taxpayers mistakenly believe that this is a “standard” deduction they are entitled to, without needing to provide any evidence of having travelled that distance, or even having undertaken any travel at all,” Ms Anderson said.

“It’s true that claims of up to 5,000 kilometres using the cents per km method don’t require a log book.

“However, you still need to have done the kilometres as part of your job and be able to show how you calculated your claim, for example by keeping a diary of places you have had to drive to for work, and how often. The

Redbacks revelling in SFNL

After not winning a game of senior football in two seasons, Hampton Park needed a fresh start and a move to the Southern Football Netball League (SFNL) offered exactly that.

Having suffered through another 0-16 season in the South East Football Netball League (SEFNL) in 2017, the Redbacks joined SFNL Division 3 - the beginning of what has been a dramatic turnaround for the club.

"We won by 10 goals against the bottom side recently and there was genuine disappointment," coach Jason Chapple said.

"To not win in two years and then all of a sudden you're disappointed with a 10-goal win, it's amazing how expectations change pretty quickly, but that's all part of it and that's a good thing.

"I think divisional footy is the way to go you're able to build a culture and it's pretty hard to set rules and expectations in teams when you're losing every week, because guys just walk away.

"This year with the firsts and seconds winning games, it makes it easier to coach and builds a different feel, atmosphere and culture - it's much better for the footy club."

Having coached the Redbacks from 200507, Chapple returned to Hampton Park for the 2018 season and has the team flying.

Hampton Park is entrenched in a battle with Springvale Districts and Endeavour Hills - for a top-two finish and the crucial double chance.

Chapple talked about bringing in quality players to the club and being able to compete with the best teams in the competition.

"Good footballers want to play in September so when you can see that there's an opportunity to play finals, players are more likely to come over and come over early as well."

The likes of Daniel Boudoloh, Travis Davis, Jackson Fry, Michael Henry, Shannon Henwood, Harley Primrose, Taylor Rainey and Mitch Woolgar have all played massive roles in Hampton Park's turnaround.

Nathan Carver - second in the league for goals with 41 majors - has also been vital. His presence up forward demands respect and he has ran riot inside 50 all season.

Chapple has instilled a team-first attitude at Hampton Park and wants his boys to be the toughest to play against in the competition.

"You can have a heap of tricks if you want, but I just want the opposition to walk away

"I want to defend hard and I want to be hard to play against. You can be defensive and still be exciting, so I like moving the footy quick and making defenders nervous by forcing them to defend.

out - footy has got to be fun and I want it be fun to watch too."

Fighting for a top-two finish is a far cry from searching for a solitary win, but Hampton Park is not satisfied. When September rolls around, the Redbacks will be ready.

"We are really looking forward to finals and we definitely have an opportunity come Sep-

tember, that's for sure," Chapple said.

"The top four are all pretty good teams and it's anyone's game when it gets to the end of the year."

The mood around Robert Booth Reserve is filled with positivity and a real desire for success. There is no doubt that the Redbacks are enjoying their new life in the SFNL.

Combine invites for ladder-leading Rays Hunt is on for umpires

The top-placed Dandenong Stingrays are marching towards the TAC Cup finals and with so much talent down at Shepley Oval, it should come as no surprise that the Rays have had 11 players invited the 2018 Victorian State Combine.

This news comes a week after five players - Toby Bedford, Riley Bowman, Zac Foot, Will Hamill and Bailey Williams - were invited to the 2018 AFL Draft Combine.

The State Combine will be held at Etihad Stadium on Saturday 5 October and provides those who missed out on Draft Combine invites the opportunity to impress in front of representatives from all AFL clubs.

The combines assess a player's strength and skill through many trials including kicking, clean hands, agility, jumping and running tests.

Dandenong's Stephen Cumming, Sam Fletcher, Matthew Gahan, Lachlan McDonnell, Jai Nanscawen, Jamie Plumridge, Mitch Riordan, Bailey Schmidt, Sam Sturt, Jai Taylor and Lachlan Young will all attend the State Combine.

In further great news for the Rays, Jake Frawley has been invited to the Rookie Me Combine, held at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre on Sunday, 6 October.

Gahan's ability to read the ball in the air and take strong intercept marks has been a highlight of the Rays' stellar defence, while Taylor's willingness to take the game on and run all day stands out.

Sturt receives an invitation after playing for Peninsula Grammar and Mt Eliza for much of the year. The smart forward played his first game for the Rays in Round 14 against the

Northern Knights and booted a goal.

Dandenong didn't play over the weekend due to a league-wide week off and returns to action on Saturday 18 August against the Geelong Falcons in Ballarat.

With just two games remaining in the home and away season, the Rays have sewn up top spot on the ladder and will be looking for their 10th win on the trot when they face the Falcons.

Finals are just around the corner and Dandenong might just possess the squad needed to finally break through and capture the team's maiden TAC Cup premiership.

The Dandenong District Cricket Umpires Association is on the lookout for new members for the upcoming season, in what is set to be a bumper year of local cricket.

The DDCA - the top turf competition in the south-east - is well regarded for producing and having plenty of champion cricketers play, and is going through some changes to enhance its future.

People who have umpired or played at any level in the past, and have a basic knowledge of the rules of cricket often find it's a great way to stay involved in the game, and also earn good remuneration in the process.

Training and ongoing support are provided, and the association are a welcoming group and have great social facilities at Shepley Oval, which is the home of the Dandenong Cricket Club in the Victorian Premier Cricket competition. Umpires can earn up to $150 for an afternoon's work.

The DDCA competition stretches from Mordialloc in the City of Kingston to Beaconsfield in the Cardinia Shire and down to Cranbourne in the City of Casey. You will need your own transport in order to umpire. Matches are played on Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

In a top-four battle, Keysborough was overrun by Highett in the second half. The Burras led by 10 points at half time, but Highett used a dominant third term to run away with a 15.12 (102) to 13.6 (84) win. Chris Bryan booted six majors.

In Division 3, Hampton Park led at every change to defeat Ashwood at Robert Booth Reserve. Cameron Williamson (four goals) was best on ground as the Redbacks claimed a 12.11 (83) to 6.7 (43) win. Hallam battled valiantly against Heatherton, but was unable to get the win, falling 10.9 (69) to 9.4 (58). Rory McIvor and Mitchell Lambert were superb for the Hawks, while Reagan Maddaford and Callum Cusack were dominant for Heatherton.

Springvale Districts sent a message to the rest of the competition with a thumping win over the third-placed Endeavour Hills Falcons.

On Friday night, the Dandenong Rangers SEABL men’s team welcomed US college outfit Saint Mary’s to Dandenong Stadium.

The Saint Mary’s program has always had a strong Australian connection, with the likes of Matthew Dellavedova, Patty Mills and local Daniel Kickert playing college basketball for the Gaels, and this team was no different.

With a host of Aussies - including 7’1” Melburnian, centre Jock Perry - to battle against, the Rangers fought hard all night.

Despite a tight opening first seven minutes of play, the Gaels used a 12-0 run late in the quarter to take a 26-18 lead into the first break.

Dandenong’s Jeremy Kendell was busy early and provided a massive boost with his aggressive mindset.

Saint Mary’s opened the second quarter on fire from three, draining two in their first two possessions to jump out to a 14-point lead.

The Rangers were struggling to get their defence set as Jordan Ford caused trouble all night. The classy guard was simply sublime for the Gaels and wreaked havoc with his unreal quickness and smarts.

At half-time, the Rangers trailed 54-41 and needed a lift on both ends of the court.

Tim Lang provided that lift on offence in the third term as he came to life and battled hard in the paint.

Although the Rangers found it tough to make inroads into the deficit, they weren’t going down without a fight and a Puoch Puoch buzzer-beating triple had the home side within reach; down 13 points at the final break.

With that typical Rangers grit and determination, Dandenong’s defensive intensity lifted to begin the fourth term and they were able to cut the deficit to nine points, 71-62, with eight minutes left to play.

Kendell’s drives to the basket were breaking down the Gaels defence.

But as he had done all night, Ford responded to the challenge. He drained a massive triple, followed by back-to-back assists to Kristers Zoriks.

And just like that, the Rangers found themselves in a 15-point hole.

Saint Mary’s claimed the win 92-78 as Jordan Ford finished with 22 points, 4 assists and 3 steals, while Jock Perry finished with 12 points and 3 rebounds.

For Dandenong, Jeremy Kendell (18 points, 3 assists) was impressive all night, while Tim Lang (15 points, 5 rebounds) and Lucas Barker (8 points, 7 assists) battled hard.

The Dandenong College Basketball Series continues this week with the Rangers taking on Loyola Marymount University on Tuesday 14 August, before welcoming the Drexel Dragons to Dandenong Stadium on Monday 20 August. Both games tip off at 7pm.
