Chihuahua attack By Derek Schlennstedt Living in Castella's bushy outskirts, Mitch Bartlett is used to seeing and hearing wildlife around his property. Though, at 10am on 3 April, Mr Bartlett heard a sound that he could not identify; the sound of a Wedge-tailed Eagle attacking his 18 month old Chihuahua named Bear. Mr Bartlett was out starting his water pump when he heard a noise reminiscent of a "baby bird feeding" coming from the bush along his boundary fence. "I heard what sounded like a baby bird feeding and thought nothing of it ... we have deer, platypus, and we hear the weirdest noises," Mr Bartlett said. "I walked 10 metres or so into the bush and right beside me was a huge Wedge-tailed Eagle on the ground ... I thought it had a rabbit at first but stopped and realised to my horror that it was my dog. "I ran and screamed at it ... it had her on the ground with its talons and was pecking." "She's only like 1.9 kilograms, so she is tiny and she was just howling ... I thought she was dying." The whole thing was over in a few seconds, but by the time Mr Bartlett had scared the eagle off, Bear had already sustained serious puncture wounds and injuries. So extensive were the injuries that Mr Bartlett rushed the small dog to the Healesville emergency vet. "She had blood everywhere," Mr Bartlett said. "They X-rayed her and luckily she didn't have any broken bones but she had so much blood in her lungs, which they think was from being squashed by the talons. "There were over a dozen odd puncture wounds into her skull, body, everywhere, the worst is her back legs though, one of them is just dragging, ... we're hoping it's just soft tissue damage." Although she's looking a bit worse for wear at the moment, with stitches across her battered little body, Bear is expected to make a full recovery.

Mr Bartlett said he will have to keep the dogs on the deck until a permanent solution for their safety can be found. "They've been running around happy as Larry for the last 18 months we've had them, but we have to keep them on the deck for now," he said."You see a pair of wedge tails
maybe monthly, but you never think they'd grab a dog." Healesville Sanctuary Director, Ross Williamson, attributed the attack to a mistaken identity and said thankfully Wedge-tailed Eagles do not usually target dogs.
"We definitely don't want people to be fearful of Wedge-tailed Eagles attacking dogs, these incidents are thankfully quite rare and are more often than not, a case of mistaken identity," Mr Williamson said. "Many birds of prey regularly hunt small animals such as rabbits, and they can't distinguish between a wild creature and a beloved pet. "Eagles are not innately ferocious and are mostly opportunistic hunters, known for their preference of 'taking the easy option' which is why you so often see them feeding from road kill ... it's probably a good idea for people with small pets to take extra care in areas where Eagles are seen regularly." The Wedge-tailed Eagle is a protected native species in all states of Australia.

By Kath Gannaway Michael Morrissey, known as 'Badger' to almost everyone who knew him, was one of the good guys. His kindness to others and generous spirit, willingness to extend a helping hand, and his witty, outgoing personality were among many reflections made by friends following his death from cancer on Friday, 23 March. Friend, John Clark, described Michael as 'an honourable man' who had a great sense of humour and was a great storyteller. Another friend, Anne Duff, said Michael always put others first. "He was a special sort of person, a unique person who earned a lot of respect in the community," she said. While Michael had many close friends through his involvement with Rivendell mental health service in Healesville, almost everyone knew him. For a long time, he was the friendly face, the chatty, helpful man who collected the trolleys around the Coles car park in Healesville. Those who were fortunate enough to get to know him well, enjoyed his intelligent mind and interest in everything from cooking and horticulture to history and mythology. The sadness of losing Michael to cancer was expressed in words and tears at a graveside service in Healesville attended by family and friends on 27 March. So were the uplifting, funny, admiring and quirky stories that his friends swapped as they farewelled someone who had shared a very special connection. Michael was born on 16 February, 1961, in Cobram, the second son of William and Anne Morrissey and younger brother of Rodger. Growing up on a farm Michael's early years were filled with the sorts of things kids do on farms, riding on tractors, eating fresh fruit straight from the trees, swimming in the irrigation channel. As he got older it was hanging out with local kids and riding motorbikes. He was a bright and clever student who after leaving school in his early teens took on various jobs including as a rouseabout in New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland. "Not long before leaving Cobram Michael met his best friend 'Rosie'," said his sister-inlaw Cathy Holschier who spoke on behalf of the family at the service. "Rosie and Michael, his beloved dog, hit the road together following the fruit-picking seasons and somehow ended up in Healesville," she said of the 17 years Michael and Rosie were great companions. She said his life changed however when on Black Saturday, 2009, Michael was involved in an accident in the Coles car park, suffering lifethreatening injuries that left him with ongoing health issues.

"Michael was very proud of the Cert3 certificate in horticulture that he received working in local gardens as a volunteer, often talking about his youth on the farm where he learnt to prune fruit trees," Cathy said. He loved his work and had a solid work ethic. "What really stood out about Michael was that he always thought of others. Money didn't matter to him," Anne said. "He would do gardening for older people who needed that help and wouldn't charge them and was cooking meals for HICCI (Healesville Interchurch Community Care Inc.) right up until he went into hospital. "He was a very intelligent person who could converse on most subjects," she said. Friends knew Michael as an avid reader who enjoyed mythical books like Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit, loved listening to the radio, including BBC radio news which kept him switched on to what was happening around the world. An ordinary, extraordinary person, Michael Morrissey will be missed by his Healesville friends and his family. He is survived by his brother Roger, sisterin-law Cathy, nephew William, niece Emma and great-niece Charlotte.

Speak up on smoke Permits are out ... chimneas are in as part of changes to the rules around burning off across Yarra Ranges shire. Among a number of changes proposed under the new Draft Open Air Burning Local Law, currently open for comment, exemptions have been added for firepits and chimneas, property-owners will no longer be required to get a permit before burning off, but new offences could come in around creating offensive smoke or smoke hazards. Yarra Ranges Mayor, Cr Len Cox, said the draft law was a result of feedback from the community last year, through pop-up sessions, online advertising and a survey. "Throughout 2017, we held 14 public pop-ups where residents could comment on what they liked and what they would like changed in our laws around burning off," Cr Cox said.
He said the draft law attempts to balance the need to burn for fire prevention purposes with the need to protect health by addressing issues around smoke. "We've tried to simplify the process of burning off for residents by no longer requiring permits, which will make it easier for residents to burn off," Cr Cox said. "We are also proposing new offences around creating offensive smoke or smoke hazards to help protect residents. "Now we're asking for the community to have their say again and let us know if they think this draft law strikes the right balance for them." A survey was released to residents during the consultation, which received 162 responses. Of the responses, 44 respondents wanted less open air burning or a complete ban; 63 respondents wanted the laws to remain the
same, while 55 expressed interest in fewer restrictions on burning. The feedback, including comments from the community at pop-up sessions, helped to shape the draft law which will replace the current Open Air Burning Local Law 2007. A number of features of the current law are proposed to remain, such as a total ban on open air burning in Urban areas. Residents can view the draft Open Air Burning Local Law and make a submission at yarraranges.vic.gov.au/haveyoursay, in writing to PO Box 105, Lilydale, over the phone by calling 1300 368 333 or by emailing mail@yarraranges. vic.gov.au until 4pm on Monday, 7 May. Submissions will be assessed at a public hearing in May before the final law is recommended to Council for approval in June.
Walk for HICCI By Kath Gannaway It's almost 30 years since churches in Healesville and Yarra Glen joined forces to provide a helping hand to families and individuals in need. HICCI may well be the area's best-known acronym - Healesville Interchurch Community Care Inc. "When it started it was just an answering machine being shared around people's houses, basically answering requests for help," HICCI Executive Officer Alison Gommers said. Confirmation last week that they have secured another four years funding at $40,000 a year, through their partnership with Yarra Ranges Council is just one indication of how much the service has grown. Even so, it's just part of the funds they need to operate. On Saturday, 28 April, the Walk for HICCI will help bolster their financial bottom line, and raise awareness of what they do. Asked about HICCI's key role, Ms Gommers said it's about a hand up where and when it's needed. "Sometimes it's a person who just needs help as a once-off. It can be the difference between one pay packet and the next and that is becoming more prevalent - people lose income, their car breaks down, they become ill - any of those things can have a big impact on a family or individual. "It may be that having a fuel voucher makes the difference, or we may be able to advise them of other resources that they didn't know about." The helping hand is not always material aid, HICCI provides a transport service, is a hub for other services, and runs a community dinner on a Tuesday evening. "Dinner at Darron's is important because it's not just about the meal, it's about social contact," Ms Gommers said. IN BRIEF Operation Chromite An operation by Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol has resulted in disappointing driving behaviour. Yarra Range Highway Patrol undertook the operation targeting drink and drug driving which ran from 6 April to 9 April. Yarra Ranges Highway patrol Sergeant Dave Macclefatrick said the results were disappointing. "We undertook an operation over this weekend, targeting drink and drug driving ... as of this morning (9 April) we have nine people who tested positive to drugs and two were caught for drunk driving," Sgt Macclefatrick said. "It's disappointing to see so many people affected by drugs on the Yarra Ranges Roads and something we'll continue to focus on into the future."
Healesville burglary Police are seeking information regarding a burglary on Cornish Road, Healesville Between 24 March and 2 April a burglary took place at a residential address along Cornish Road where two firearms and some power tools were stolen. Police are seeking witnesses who may have seen suspicious activity between 24 March and 2 April. Arrests Police have arrested two males in relation to a spate of thefts from vehicles in the Mooroolbark, South Croydon and Ringwood Areas. A number of cars were broken into and property stolen. Police arrested a 21-year old male from Ringwood and a 22-year-old male form Yarra Glen in relation to the incidents. Both have been charged with multiple counts of theft from motor vehicles and bailed to appear at Ringwood Magistrates Court at a later date.
Nuisance fires Police have described small fires being set alight in the vicinity of Queens Park as a nuisance. Three small fires have been set alight in bins and milk crates around Queens Park and have occurred between 1 and 6 April. The first occurred before midnight on 1 April and the second just after midnight on 2 April. The third occurred on 6 April at about 1am. Each time CFA have had to attend.

Police are seeking information after the Warburton Football ground was set alight around midnight on 7 April. Detective Acting Sergeant Mark Hodgson at Yarra Ranges CIU said that that the scoreboard was destroyed by a suspicious fire and the damages came to around $10,000 Rod Barnard, president at Warburton-Millgrove Football Club said the loss of the scoreboard was a big hit to the club which will play at the oval in round six and need the board. "We are going to put a new scoreboard up, but that isn't in place at the moment, we have to fast track it to get it ready for round six." "It makes things a bit difficult for us," Mr Barnard said.

Tackling a tough topic By Kath Gannaway "We are going to tread into territory that is tough to talk about." Maree Crabbe was upfront about the confronting nature of some of the images and information she was about to deliver on pornography, young people and sexuality. Talking at The Memo in Healesville on 26 March to parents, teachers and other professionals working with children and young people, the nationally renowned author, filmmaker and expert on an increasingly damaging mega-million dollar industry broadly marketed as 'porn', she dissected the aggressively marketed online exposure to hardcore pornography which she said was now mainstream, pervasive and infinitely accessible. A core message was the impact on young males and females in their perception of sexuality which she said was increasingly informed by online pornography with serious implications for their capacity to develop a sexuality that incorporates mutual pleasure, respect and negotiation of free and full consent. "With the click of a button young people can access a vast array of pornography and their exposure can be intentional or accidental," she said citing curiosity, games and uninvited pop-ups and links to pornography sites as the means by which young people are exposed to images they do not have the critical skills to understand or analyse. Referencing 'men's' magazines of previous generations of porn, Ms Crabbe said "If you are thinking that's what porn is like, you are going to misunderstand what is happening today," she said. "Progressively is has become more aggressive and more aggressive towards women; it is more hardcore, more violent than ever before." In segments of filmed interviews with actors and producers in the industry, and with a teenage boy and girl on their experience of

"The loudness of the pornography voice is amplified by the silence of an opposing voice," Ms Crabbe said. Reducing inequality was one step in addressing the issue. "Pornography not only suggests that vio-

lence against women is OK, it says it's sexy," she said. She said equipping young people to critique what they see and to develop the skills required to resist pornography's influence were necessary tools. "And, we need to inspire young people that relationships and sex can be so much better than what they see in porn," she said.
Ms Crabbe said adults also need to support political and community leaders to understand the issues and how to address them. "We need to find creative and compelling ways to explore the issues." The forum "It's time we talked ... " was presented by Eastern Health, Chum Creek Primary School and Healesville High School.

What is something people don't know about you? Once upon a time I quite enjoyed drawing, particularly in pen and ink. That turned to signwriting and I did quite few honour boards. What has been your most memorable moment? When I was about 18, I sang for the first time at the 3DB Hillbilly Round Up at Ferntree Gully. There were about 3000 people jammed into the place. What would your final meal be? Probably bread and water, but hopefully steak and salad. What event, past or present or future would you like to witness? A massed ANZAC service for the Yarra Valley. What is your favourite television show? Re-runs of New Tricks. I love it. What is your favourite book? When I was about 12 or 13 I read Reach for the Sky the story of pilot Douglas Bader by Paul Brickhill. I had quite an impact on me. What six guests, dead or alive, would you invite to a dinner party? Warburton RSL members, long gone but great company, Albert Fox and Malcolm McNab, an army sergeant who was a laugh a minute, full of knowledge and a fabulous trainer Chuckles

Inventi magic The opportunity to take part in a workshop run by two of Australia’s most talented chamber ensemble musicians, Ben Opie and Melissa Doecke, was a rare holiday treat for aspiring young musicians on Thursday, 5 April. The artistic directors of Inventi Ensemble were in Warburton for a series of holiday workshops. The younger members got to make their own instrument and use them to make music with Saint-Saens beloved ‘Carnival of the Animals’ while the older members learnt about improvisation, using their own instruments and with the help of the Inventi musicians bringing their new improvisations to life. Inventi Ensemble will return to Warburton as part of Yarra Ranges Council’s Classical Tracks series on Sunday, 15 April. Drawing together Australia’s finest soloists
and chamber musicians Inventi Ensemble defy stereotypes being equally at home premiering works at a new music festival, performing in Australia’s finest concert halls and chamber music series, or playing Bach from a three-tonne truck in a pop-up venue, and introducing new Australian music to young children in a library storytime project. Passionate about regularly performing Australian music, Inventi regularly commission new works from Australian composers. In addition to this they mark their own Inventi stamp on traditional works including an aweinspiring arrangement of Prokofiev’s Classical Symphony for five players. OASIS as an unreal escape from uncomfortable reality. Combined with the shallow characters and their lack of growth, this deprives the film of tension and promotes an unhealthy degree of escapism into pop-culture. Wade and his motley friends do face major peril in the real world, but it’s all for defending a popular illusion, meaning that the central conflict feels intangible and unimportant. The action scenes are vibrant and have wellchoreographed moments, but are mostly confusing CGI punch-ups of little consequence. The film has bland characters and a generic fetch-quest plot amid droves of pop-culture references, of which most don’t factor meaningfully into the plot. These swarms of hollow references are also emblematic of just how much nostalgia has swamped modern blockbuster filmmaking. While superficially exciting, Ready Player One is arguably one of the last films we need right now. - Peter Douglas

NTPs were won by Mr Pres. (9th), and Ian Garside, for a superb 2nd shot on the 10th (yes, he got his birdie!). Saturday 7 April: Stroke and Monthly Medal. A Grade, and the medal, was taken out by Ken White with a solid Nett 67. Martin Garthwaite won B Grade with a fine 68 (hey, Marty, that handicap will soon shrink to your previous number of a few years ago!). If you netted 73 or better, you scored a ball. NTP winners, on the day, were Barry Maltman (3rd), Ken White (5th), Ms Nursey (9th; and holidays clearly agree with you, Meredith!). The V-Man Sargsyan (12th) & to Captain Cross, who has appeared to 'own' the difficult 15th recently!

Riding Fold to a win in the third, and Victorian Crown in the fifth, Pace, who rode her first winner at Healesville, said (perhaps prophetically) "they were completely different races, but with the same good result," Ms Pace and both Ms McLeish and Ms Brennan spoke in their presentations of the great atmosphere that Healesville Amateur Racing Club provides each season and commended the volunteer race committee and helpers who dedicate themselves keeping Healesville on the radar as one of, if not the best, picnic racing meetings in Victoria. In conjunction with Historic Winton, the 'Mail' is giving 10 lucky readers the chance to win a double-pass to one of Australia's most iconic motoring events. Historic Winton is Australia's longest running, all-historic motor race meeting, which presents two big days of non-stop racing on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 May. Once again, the event will feature over 400 historic racing cars and motorbikes, from the 1920s to the 1980s, plus a huge heritage display of veteran and vintage vehicles. The long weekend of historic motoring will start on Friday 25 May with the Benalla & District Classic Car & Motorbike Tour, which is always great fun for all who participate, as well as spectators. Bus to help crackdown The first of a new fleet of alcohol and drug buses are set to hit the road to help a Victoria Police crackdown on drunk and drug-affected drivers. Police Minister Lisa Neville on Tuesday 27 March joined Victoria Police and the Transport Accident Safety Commission (TAC) to watch officers put their training to the test, using the new state-of-the-art bus in an operation to catch drug and alcohol-affected drivers in Southbank. A total of 10 buses, funded by the Labor Government in the Victorian Budget 2015-16, rolled of the production line before the Easter long weekend. The buses, an investment of $11.7 million, were built by specialist vehicle manufacturers Brimarco, based in Ballarat and Derrimutbased Byron Wade. The new fleet of alcohol and drug buses will replace the existing fleet by March 2019 and will give police greater flexibility in targeting locations across the state. The new fleet includes six smaller buses that can access locations that are currently difficult for larger buses to reach, including narrow and difficult-to-access country roads. This flexibility means police can target more areas, more often and keep our roads safe. The buses are fitted out with the latest technology, including LED lights, Guardian Detection System, side lights, a rear-mounted variable message sign and programmable emergency lights and siren control. About 3000 full-licence drivers are caught with blood-alcohol concentrations of between 0.05 and 0.07 each year. In 2016, more than 55 per cent of drivers

Over the Labor Day Long weekend alone, police reported around one in six drivers tested had drugs in their system. Victoria proudly leads the country in its efforts to target drug-drivers, with the Labor Government providing permanent funding for police to conduct 100,000 drug tests every year. Ms Neville said the buses will help to reduce instances of road trauma. "The new bus will help police make our roads safer by targeting those under the influence of either drugs or alcohol, who are risking lives by getting behind the wheel," she said. Meanwhile, TAC chief executive officer, Joe Calafiore, said it was a great initiative. "We don't want to see any more people killed or injured because of drink-driving or drug-driving - so the better-equipped Victoria Police is to target this behaviour, the safer our roads will be," he said.
