Art to remember Male offenders working towards rehabilitation within the community have gifted the Pakenham RSL an Anzac themed artwork. Finished just in time for Remembrance Day, the artwork was donated to the RSL on 8 November after months of hard work. The 2m x 1m artwork was completed by seven men working with Living Learning Pakenham artist Rob Matheson as part of a unique program that has been established as a partnership through the learning centre and the Department of Justice South East Metro region’s community work team. Mr Matheson admitted he didn’t quite
know what to expect when taking on the challenge of teaching art to the men, however he was pleasantly surprised. “What impressed me most was the participants’ willingness to have a go,” Mr Matheson said. “My passion is to create a positive outcome and win-win for everyone and I think we’ve accomplished that.” One participant, who cannot be identified, said the project was successful as “it actually meant something to us”. The men themselves came up with the idea for the painting with the intention of handing it over to the RSL in recognition of our returned servicemen and women.
“It wasn’t us doing mundane tasks,” the participant said. “Rob drives a believe that we should have input in what we create. For us, it was about giving back to the community.” The artwork was the fourth the participants have created this year under the program. The painting features the images of three soldiers from three different eras of war - World War I, World War II and modern day. It also includes a WWII Lancaster Bomber plane in the sky, a modern war ship in the sea and red poppies in the foreground. “We wanted it to encompass remembrance of all conflicts,” the participant said. He said the men were proud of the final
product, especially as they began with no idea as to what it would be they would create. “It’s something we’re very proud of and proud of the RSL to have hanging in its building,” the participant said. Pakenham RSL president Gary Elliott said the painting would take pride of place in the RSL. “It’s an excellent piece of artwork, and one I’m sure will travel with the Pakenham RSL wherever it may be,” Mr Elliott said. A fifth piece of art created by the men is almost complete and ready for donation to the Pakenham Fire Brigade. The artwork’s frame was created by the Cardinia Men’s Shed.

Most of the focus is on Flemington for the huge Melbourne Cup Carnival, spearheaded by that race that stops a nation. People who take scant interest in racing throughout the year are happy to play a part in one of the four big race days this week - the Derby, Cup, Oaks and Stakes race days. It now also showcases what the racing industry brings to the South-East region, which has become an epicentre of the racing industry. Cranbourne and Pakenham have been part of the carnival action. Cranbourne hosted a meeting on Melbourne Cup Day for the first time in its 150-year history and Pakenham continues to build on its big Pakenham Gazette Oaks Day meeting. Both racing centres provide enormous benefit to the region. Racing Minister Martin Pakula said on Tuesday that the government was proud to support the new Cup Day race meeting at Cranbourne “because it attracts visitors, boosts the local economy and supports jobs”. Cranbourne has the largest training complex in the Southern Hemisphere, creating hundreds of long-term jobs for the region, and has bold plans for a 100seat convention centre and accompanying hotel complex in the pipeline. Pakenham built Victoria’s newest racecourse a couple of years back and is on a similar path, with some of racing’s biggest names looking to establish satellite stables there. Racing is an industry that draws its critics, but this region would be poorer without the benefits it brings in many areas. Garry Howe

New sailors setting sail By Kyra Gillespie The Lakeside Sailing Club saw a record number of turnouts at its annual Discover Sailing Day on Sunday 5 November. Club commodore Stewart Baker said members were “ecstatic” about seeing close to 100 people turn up to their family fun event over the weekend. The free event aimed to draw in community members who had never sailed before. “The day was absolutely fantastic,” Mr Baker said. “This year we took out our record number of attendees as we had close to 100 people turn up.
“We didn’t even have any signs up and had people arriving from nine o’clock onwards and we were still sailing until about two in the afternoon.” The club wanted to welcome community members to the world of sailing and show how fun, accessible and affordable it is. “We had a lot of people come who had never been on the water before. “They were all thrilled that they could try out sailing while having the security of experienced sailors going with them. “The kids got to have a turn steering too - it was great to see them enjoying themselves. “It was the perfect weather for a day on the water.”

Remembering those who fought and those who fell Pakenham Brave men and women who died at war for the country will be honoured in Pakenham this Remembrance Day. Remembrance Day is held on the anniversary of the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 when peace was declared on the Western Front of World War I. Pakenham RSL will commemorate the day with a traditional Remembrance Day Ceremony, commencing at 10.50am Saturday 11 November. Community members, service personnel and local representatives will lay wreaths at the service and a minute’s silence will be held in memory of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. The Pakenham Remembrance Day Service will be held at the town’s cenotaph, opposite the RSL hall, at the corner of James and Snodgrass streets, Pakenham. Berwick
A community memorial at the High Street Cenotaph will take place from 10.40am. All are welcome to head to the Berwick RSL for light refreshments following the ceremony. Officer The Officer community will come together at 10.30am to remember those who fought for the freedom of the country. Cardinia Shire councillor Leticia Wilmot will give the address and Officer Primary School students will sing the National Anthem. A minute’s silence will be marked at 11am. The service will be held at the memorial gates at the corner of Princes Highway and Starling Road, Officer. Kooweerup Kooweerup residents will meet at 10.45am the town’s Cenotaph for a service. Organisers hope the day will attract the younger generations that are usually at school during the service.
The Cenotaph can be found outside the community centre, Cochrane Park, Rossiter Road. Nar Nar Goon To pay their respects, residents will gather at the town memorial at 11am. The ceremony will provide an opportunity for locals to lay wreaths in honour of the fallen. Upper Beaconsfield Upper Beaconsfield RSL will hold a “short sharp” commemorative service at 11am. It will be at the war memorial, corner of Salisbury Road and Emerald-Beaconsfield Road. Tea and coffee will follow the service and all are welcome. Lang Lang Lang Lang will mark Remembrance Day with a small service at 11am. The service, which will include laying of the wreaths and playing of the Last Post, will be
held at the town’s Cenotaph. Cockatoo Cockatoo RSL’s service is from 10.45am at the Cockatoo RSL. It will be followed by morning tea at the clubhouse, with a barbecue. Emerald Emerald RSL will hold a service from 10.30am at Cenotaph in Emerald. There will also be an invitation to remember the 32 WWI soldiers from Emerald by taking part in a guided tour of the Anzac Walk. MP Jason Wood will also present certificates of service to 70 veterans. The service will be followed by morning tea at the RSL. Gembrook Gembrook RSL will hold a Remembrance Day service from 10.45am at the Gembrook war memorial on the corner of Redwood and Gembrook Road. The service will be followed by morning tea at Lilydale RSL.

Speaking of nostalgic vehicles, Akoonah Park Men's Shed’s recent classic car show was blessed with brilliant weather. A 30-degree pearler drew more than 4000 to take in about 900 exhibits - including some of Peter Brock’s most significant vehicles. One of the eyecatchers was a two-of-a-kind Rambler Royce made in 1976. It used to be owned by former Gold Coast mayor Bruce Small, who introduced Surfers Paradise’s famous Meter Maids.
As the song goes: “Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree, merry merry king of the bush is he.” But at Tooradin, this was not exactly the case. A kookaburra is now king of Tooradin Primary School where he sits atop a school timber sign, laughing all day long. Just one thing - he can’t fly because he’s one part of a mural painted by students across the school on Tuesday 17 October. Tooradin Primary School well-being coordinator Rachel Davis said the school was privileged to work with the artists from Melbourne’s Murals, Brigitte Dawson and Melissa Turner, to create a large school mural. “Students from across the school entered a drawing competition to work with Brigitte and Melissa to design and paint two large murals that captured the wonderful coastal environment of Tooradin,” Ms Davis said. She said the students were asked to use the local coastal or bushland environments as their inspiration, with bunyips, fishing platforms and Sawtell’s Inlet included. “Tooradin Primary School will position these two wonderful murals for the community to enjoy and for students and families for many years to come to share in the pride we all feel about our special coastal community and school.”
Got the munchies Police executed a drug warrant on Von Nida Drive in Cranbourne North on Tuesday 31 October, but not only were there a number of police vehicles in the area, a Domino’s Pizza car was also spotted pulling up in the street. A person, believed to be the occupant of the house who waited as police searched the property for several hours, decided it was past his lunchtime and had pizza delivered to the house.
What’s in a name? Not sure if this will catch on, but comedian Charlie Pickering dubbed an alternate name for Casey’s new arts centre on opening night on 28 October. Obviously taken with the magnificence of the Bunjil Place architecture, he ventured the site will be known locally as Nazza Wazza Opera House. Quite the mouthful.

A local driver has been priming up a 50-yearold muscle car across 4000 kilometres of outback bush-bashing. All for a good charitable cause, he lined up a photo shoot to publicise the spectacular vehicle and his mission. The only catch was he couldn’t get the car to start. Ablett wants mayor’s job By Cam Lucadou-Wells and Brendan Rees Casey councillor Geoff Ablett has put his hand up for his third term as mayor, with a plan to revegetate some of Casey’s lost remnant ecology. Cr Ablett was expecting to nominate for the election at a council meeting at Bunjil Place on 13 November. He thought two other councillors may rival him for the job. “I’m not sure where it all sits at the moment but I’ll be putting my hand up. “If it’s me, good. But if it’s someone else I’ll be the first person to shake their hand and say well done. “I’ll support them 100 per cent.” If successful, Cr Ablett would pursue many of the big-ticket items of the council, such as the Smart City push, more local jobs and engagement with China. His other pet issues will include mental health, homelessness and restoring some of the large-scale loss of natural environment in Casey. Just two per cent of Casey’s environment remained from 40 years ago, he said. There was a need to balance the urgent need for more jobs with maintaining the environment, he said. Cr Ablett also would lobby for the State Government to pursue a Western Distributorstyle partnership with a private consortium to fast-track road upgrades in the South-East. A double-rail line between Dandenong and Clyde’s growth corridor was also high on

Meanwhile incumbent mayor Cr Sam Aziz backed Cr Ablett as a “man of tremendous integrity” to take over the helm. “He is the most active councillor in terms of putting forward ideas and initiatives. “He would be a fantastic person to continue the stability and teamwork we’ve established in Casey.” He nominated the turnaround in “culture” at Casey as one of his most significant legacies. “Eight years ago, Casey was making headlines for all the wrong reasons like councillor infighting. “We’re now making the headlines for Bunjil Place, we’re making the headlines for planning for a smarter city in the future ... “It’s a great place to be and I’m proud of the contribution I’ve been making.”
Stacks to explore at library By Cam Lucadou-Wells If it was a book, Bunjil Place’s new library could be described as a real page-turner. But libraries are so more than being aout books these days. And the three-level library at Casey Council’s freshly-launched civic-arts precinct is a multi-media and social wonderland. Officially opened on 6 November, the 1920-square-metre library includes free wi-fi, an inviting childrens zone with fantasy chairs and reading grottos and a youth zone with audio-visual and gaming facilities. There’s also a tall amphitheatre, an outdoor reading garden, an audio-visual art wall, community meeting rooms and a 50,000-strong borrowing collection. Casey councillor Wayne Smith said libraries had “evolved” into an interactive space for people to meet, chat, learn and be inspired. “Council couldn’t be prouder of this incred-

Rosalie was at Beersheba By Cam Lucadou-Wells Casey councillor Rosalie Crestani has described a 100-year commemoration service of the Battle of Beersheba in what is now Israel as an “experience of a lifetime”. Cr Crestani, who paid for the trip “out of my own pocket”, is pushing for closer ties between Casey and Israel. She joined a travelling convoy from her church Catch the Fire Ministries and political party Rise Up Australia at the service. “I will remember this day forever,” she said of the service that marked the charge of about 800 Australian Light Horsemen during the battle on 31 October, 1917. The cavalry charge is known as one of the most miraculous. Thirty-one Australians of the 4th and 12th Light Horse Regiments were killed, 36 were wounded as they charged on enemy lines defending the town of Beersheba. They captured more than 700 Turkish soldiers and enabled Allied forces to break enemy lines near Gaza and forge into Palestine. “In this battle, the Australians were truly placed in an almost impossible situation but their resolve truly inspires,” Cr Crestani said. “I believe our Beersheba victory should have a more prominent place in our children’s history books than currently. “Our children should know the victories as well as the losses.” Cr Crestani noted the crowds of Beersheba school children who gathered around the Aussies, shook hands and yelled “We love Australia". She was also reassured by Israel’s “worldclass” security - which had foiled and killed 11 would-be suicide bombers that had tunnelled from Gaza the day before the service. “There was palpable relief that day. “Ironically I’ve never felt safer than when here within her borders.”

Casey-Ofakim would be a “natural extension” of Israeli’s “profound appreciation for our allied support”. On her return, she said she’d like to be Casey mayor “with the city’s best interest at heart”. “I’m ready to be mayor,” she said. “I’m just not sure my colleagues are ready for me to be as yet.”
The battle is also a factor in Cr Crestani’s push for Casey to forge a sister city relationship with Ofakim in Israel. It mirrors Rise Up Australia’s policy for close ties with Israel. “The bonding between our two countries is inevitable,” Cr Crestani said. “The Israelis seem to understand this more than Australians currently.” She said a formal friendship between

on the place are a precedent on how you see the place. The grass area around the TV is a complete balls up, levels in the grass don’t allow people to stand and see the TV or watch things from the back. And we pay millions for a botched up front yard? I did like the library and a few other places. The theatre (small) was good, but I think overly done, must have cost a squillion - was it to battle “The Drum“ theatre in Dandy? The gallery was OK, but failed to show anything other than the construction pieces of Bunjil - didn’t see one bit of heritage or native ideals, seeing it has a native name and all. Could have had old images of the past, showing what we’ve come from, you know. Aziz has a case of “one upmanship“ mentality and used Bunjil as an excuse to justify his new age world of council offices. Though it is an interesting building with European contemporary design to it, but it didn’t feel like or see any design feature, to show off or live up to its native name. As a ratepayer, I feel jibbed on its initial opening. Rhys Harrop: Happy to put in as many estates as you can, but can’t update the roads. The roads should have been updated way before all these 10s of thousands of homes have been built. $168 million on this s*** is a joke.

’Sensory Gardens’ Come and explore with us the joys of creating a sensory garden. While all gardens can have healing effects, the idea of ‘sensory gardening‘ goes beyond. Disco Bingo The Holy Family Primary School in Doveton is in dire need of some upgrades which they are slowly working towards. The school is aiming to raise funds for a junior school playground upgrade. The school is hosting a fund-raiser ‘disco bingo’ to raise the much-needed funds. Family Movie Night Alive Crusade is holding a family movie night screening Disney’s “Inside Out” on 10 November at Wilson Botanic Park in Berwick. Gold medal haul for mum By David Nagel A barbell loaded with an intimidating weight, encased in a silent auditorium where the sole focus of the expectant crowd is on the next participant - and that one moment of explosive energy. Welcome to the world of Pakenham mother-of-three Lynda Edwards - the recently crowned Australian, Oceania, Pacific Rim and World Cup Masters Weightlifting champion. Edwards recently won gold medals in all four events on the Gold Coast, where she snatched and clean-and-jerked her way to a dominant victory in the 35-39 female age bracket - in the 69kg division. Her lifts of 71kg in the snatch, and 88kg in the clean and jerk, are impressive enough, but for the 38-year-old it’s the combined test of her physical and mental attributes that sets the sport apart from the rest. “That’s what I love most about it, the moment just before you do a lift when everything seems so quiet and still, and it’s just you and the bar,” Edwards says with a passion that underlines her deep love for her craft. “Whatever comes next after you pick up the barbell comes down to you and your mind. It can be intimidating but I’ve learned to block it out. That’s what I’ve enjoyed most about weightlifting; that I can now mentally focus on things that I would never have dreamed of doing in the past. “It’s a massive mental challenge, and then the buzz of lifting something that you never thought you could is something you can’t explain.” Edwards played a lot of sport as a kid, but it was in 2013 that she started CrossFit in Pakenham, where a meeting with weightlifting coach Lester Ho would change her life forever.
“Lester hosted a seminar at the CrossFit gym in Pakenham,” she explained. “It convinced me to do some weightlifting sessions and I instantly enjoyed it more and fell in love with it to be honest. It was just an interest to begin with but I think deep down Lester was hoping I would compete and he finally convinced me at the end of 2015.” Edwards worked hard on her core strength and technique, training five days a week at home and making three trips a fortnight to Ho’s home gym in Moorabbin. Her performance improved dramatically, but it was only after spending four months rebuilding the ‘jerk’ part of her lift, earlier this year, that she graduated from the local to international stage. “I switched from the ‘split jerk’ to the ‘squat jerk’ in four months before we went to New Zealand in April to represent Australia at the Masters Games,” Edwards said. “I finished fourth over there but I was improving rapidly with the new technique and that gave me a lot of confidence moving forward.” Edwards has since been on a roll, finishing second in the Victorian Championships Open Category and then cleaning up on the Gold Coast last week, her four gold medals just the start. She matched the weightlifting record for her category, won the best female lifter award for the 35-44 age bracket and was named the bronze medallist for the best lifter in the World Cup overall category. Her outstanding performance also earned a ticket to the National Weightlifting Championships in 2018. “This whole thing has totally exceeded my expectations, gold was a dream but I never tru-

The gold medals are a dream come true so I need to challenge myself and set new goals. “I want to travel more around the world to compete in the Masters and win more gold medals, and I’ve just matched the record on the Gold Coast so I want to beat that as well.” And, like all champions, Edwards has sacrificed much for her success. Her husband Ricky and three children Paige, Lachlan and Jacob have all done likewise.
“I have a husband and three children, I work lots of hours, I need to eat four to five times a day, to maintain muscle growth, and squeeze training in as well - so time management is pretty important,” she said. “It’s been a real team effort, my coach Lester has been fantastic and Ricky has been a massive support for me, he comes to every competition and doubles as my masseuse, all the deep tissue stuff, which is pretty handy,” she said. “And Clint and Michelle at the Cafe, they’ve supported me through the journey as well. Everyone has played their part.”
When he’s in a mood to score, he belts ’em for Miles By Nick Creely When Devon Meadows star Brad Miles is in the mood to score, there is arguably no other player in the West Gippsland Cricket Association more unstoppable. And in the Panthers’ District Division clash with Tooradin at Glover Reserve on Saturday, Miles not only surpassed previous records, but completely flattened them. The left-handed power hitter smashed his way to an extraordinary 260 - a knock that included 24 fours and 12 sixes - all in just 223 balls, as his side posted an utterly formidable 8/441. That makes it a total of 168 runs scored solely in boundaries. And he was only in the 91 at tea, making it even more mind boggling that only hours later almost tripled his score. It could have been a completely different story, however, with Miles dropped when he was just on six. Miles’ feat is now the highest score in Devon Meadows Cricket Club history and the highest score ever made in the District Division, surpassing Ben Maroney’s 201 against Nyora in the 2009/10 season. From the Panthers’ perspective, it is the highest team score ever made in their first XI, while Miles’s 162-run partnership with allrounder Lucas Carroll (31) is the club’s record for the fifth wicket. Since joining the Panthers for the 2016-'17 season, Miles has scored an incredible 1277 runs at 70.94 - including Twenty20s - from just 20 matches and 21 innings, with three centuries and seven half centuries. It was two for the books By Russell Bennett It was a feat no-one at Kooweerup’s Denhams Road ground on Sunday could remember happening before - two outright victories in as many rounds in the WGCA’s Premier Division. The round-five result for Mark Cooper’s men showcased their ruthless side as they claimed 20 Merinda Park wickets for just 182 runs in a comprehensive smashing that pitted the competition’s best side against one of its biggest battlers. This simply isn’t the Cobras side of recent times that vied for, and competed in, finals year after year. Instead, this is a much more inexperienced group - one taught somewhat of a cricketing lesson by the rampant Demons - 97 and 85 to 1/132 (dec) and 1/52. While the Merinda Park boys struggled to take the game on in the face of some imposing bowling by quicks John Bright (6/29) and Jess Mathers (3/39 and 3/19), the home side had no such trouble with just two Demon wickets falling all game. The result came in the round straight after Kooweerup secured a stunning outright against a disappointing Bulls outfit at Cardinia. Bright was particularly lethal on Saturday and at one stage was on a hat-trick before finishing with a six-wicket haul from his 15 overs. Demons skipper Mark Cooper scored an unbeaten 63 in the first innings and followed that up with 4/11 off 14 overs in the Cobras’ second dig. Lachie Ramage (11 not out), Paul Bright (17) and Mitch Davey (18 not out, including a towering six over the carpark) were the only three Kooweerup batsmen needed in their second innings. “In both of our last two games we’ve lost the toss and bowled first, and things have just fallen in place,” Cooper said of his side’s consecutive outright wins.

The Bombers were rolled for just 82 in their first innings with Kallan Braid-Ball claiming 6/56 from his 18 overs in the face of some attimes questionable shot selection. Emerald’s batsmen took the game on at stages but just didn’t have the application to stave off the likes of Braid-Ball, Matt Welsh (2/6 from nine overs) and Dwayne Doig (2/18 from nine). Bombers left-armer Trent Rolfs was particularly impressive in the Bulls’ reply, snaring 4/50 from his 14 overs, but the visitors ultimately reached 6/176 off the final 44 overs of the day’s play off the back of some strong hitting from Te Ahu Davis (38 not out) and Pat Nolen (46). The Bulls could well declare early on day two in search of outright points that could prove vital in their push for the finals later in the season. In the other game of Round 5, the Seagulls rolled through Upper Beaconsfield for just 103 in 49 overs at Tooradin with Kade Burns (2/31), Russell Lehman (2/26), Josh Lownds (2/3) and Bailey Lownds (2/7) all snaring two wickets apiece. The Gulls will resume this week at 2/82 with Tom Hussey (40) and Josh Lownds (7) the notout batsmen.
