CAFE TAKES TITLE WITH A TWIST Twisted Sista’s popularity with its customers has seen it voted the winner of the People’s Choice award. Sam and Martha Di Salvo launched the first Twisted Sista in Fountain Gate Shopping Centre in June 2011. “With Twisted Sista we wanted to create an original and authentic concept best described as a place to indulge the senses,” Ms Di Salvo said. The Twisted Sista idea was to create a unique twist on a modern cafe combined with a gelateria that would have customers instantly wanting more. The couple’s hard work has been recognised over the years with Twisted Sista winning seven Westfield retail excellence awards including the prestigious Best Retailer in Victoria. “Over the years this inspired us to push the boundaries of business to see what we were capable of,” Ms Di Salvo said. “Twisted Sista was born from a vision to create an atmosphere of fun and excitement with a menu based on the freshest ingredients delivered with exceptional personalised service. “We put everything we had into the business and worked harder than ever before. “We soon knew we had created a recipe for success and, with family at the heart of everything we do, we introduced our daughter Josie into the business. “Offering something new and unique in casual dining, the Twisted Sista brand became well recognised and our client base grew faster than we could have imagined. “Josie is now playing a vital role in expanding the brand and taking the

POWERING AHEAD TO SUCCESS TRADES AND CONSTRUCTION Sponsor

Winner Powerplant Project Services Finalists Elite Building Services, Insulgreen Solutions

Hallam electrical contractor Powerplant Project Services has been surging from strength to strength. The firm has major lighting design contracts on some of the state’s largest road projects, its staff list is ever-growing and recently it appointed its inaugural chief executive. Now, to add to the success, Powerplant has taken out Casey Cardinia Business Awards’ highest prize Business of the Year. Powerplant has been involved in “asset relocation and lighting design” for the Thompsons Road upgrade as well as designing lighting for the Monash Freeway between Pakenham and Tullamarine - except the city tunnels. Other projects include street lighting and asset relocation for the Mernda rail extension and highway upgrade in Traralgon. Powerplant’s staff has grown sixfold to more than 50 in the past five years. Last year it added more than 600 projects.

SUCCESS IS DRIVEN BY HAVING THE RIGHT PEOPLE AND HAVING THE RIGHT CULTURE…

Chief executive John Kelso said Powerplant was part of a growth area providing infrastructure and services for utilities - at a time when utilities were downsizing and outsourcing. “It’s an exciting time to come to the business,” Mr Kelso said. “We’re looking also at how to bring in new local talent, such as through traineeships, as a way of regenerating and building up new skills. “Success is driven by having the right people and having the right culture.” Mr Kelso, a former AusNet national services manager with 38 years in the utility sector, crossed to Powerplant because of its culture and the fact that it was “going somewhere”. He pointed to renewable solutions as

a possible new frontier. “Where I came from (in the utilities sector), they were doing quite a bit in trialling the renewables space. “We’re working hard to take these new technologies and to add those to the intelligent infrastructure solutions we give our clients.” Director Greg Plant used to work for Mr Kelso 25 years ago. “We’re looking to develop the business to best serve those infrastructure needs in this (south-east Melbourne) region and across the state. “We’re also considering new opportunities interstate. “But, despite this fantastic growth, we don’t lose sight of what’s important to people in this area.”

The current M1 widening project ranks as one of Powerplant’s biggest jobs, alongside its lighting design for 300 light poles in the recent Tullamarine Freeway widening. “For us it’s a real achievement as a relatively small company to be participating in these larger projects and to have contact with nearly the entire freeway. “We’re little guys who have got to do big things locally.” Other major local projects include Peninsula Link, Sladen Street, Ernst Wanke Road, Northey Road, Casey Fields BMX centre and Bunjil Place. Powerplant also lands electricity-line contracts for new housing estates, particularly in Casey. Mr Plant said the secret to Powerplant’s success comes from “serving our customers well”. “We develop the most economic idea and we deliver what our client needs from it,” he said.

PRESCRIPTION FOR SUCCESS Emerald Village Pharmacy has taken out the award for the region’s top retailer. Emerald Village Pharmacy is a community pharmacy offering a range of pharmaceutical services as well as specialising in beauty and complementary medicines. Customer service is a priority for business owner Louisa Lammers and her team. This dedication to customer service was never more apparent than in November 2015 when the pharmacy was gutted by fire. A blaze caused by an electrical fault took hold in the early hours of the morning on 1 November, gutting the building and destroying most of the stock. Just six days later the pharmacy was back on its feet in the most remarkable circumstances. The CFA was able to save valuable customer files allowing Ms Lammers and her staff to continue a prescription delivery service - crucial to many customers in Emerald and the surrounding district. They also set up a marquee and served customers from a spot on the footpath. At the time Ms Lammers said it was the resilience of her staff that allowed the business to continue operating after such a devastating blow. Quoted in the Pakenham Gazette in 2015, Ms Lammers said: “I’ve got the most amazing staff. In terrible circumstances, they’ve done everything that’s been asked of them. “I love living in Emerald. I’ve always loved it, this just confirms it.”

Pharmacy assist Gabby D’Arcy said the Emerald Village Pharmacy took pride in assisting its customers by offering services such as blood pressure

monitoring, medication reviews and a medicine packing service. In 2015 Ms D’Arcy was nominated as a state finalist for the Pharmacy Assistant of the Year Award. “We aim to ensure each customer receives products and advice to

encourage a positive health outcome,” Ms D’Arcy said. “Our staff have vast experience in all areas of health and wellbeing including diabetes, asthma, vitamins, make-up and specialty skin care products.”

RAISE A GLASS FOR CANNIBAL HOSPITALITY Sponsor

Winner Cannibal Creek Vineyard Finalists Elevation at Emerald Restaurant and Bar, Settlers Run Golf and Country Club

Cannibal Creek Vineyard is the winner of this year’s Hospitality award. Husband and wife team Patrick and Kirsten Hardiker have run Cannibal Creek since 1997. The business took a giant step forward when the couple opened a French themed restaurant at Cannibal Creek in March. “For a long time we’ve been planning to do something like this - somewhere where people could sit and enjoy some food with their wine, and where we could showcase other Gippsland produce as well, not just our own,” Kirsten said. “We’ve got a full commercial kitchen, restaurant, and a cellar room downstairs - we hope to use that as another tasting area and a place for foodie workshops,” she said. There’s a deck for the summer time, a fireplace for the cooler months, and a private dining space for family groups or meetings. “The premium wines we make are really fantastic with food,” Kirsten said. “It’s giving that whole experience, I think. “I think people are looking for more these days, too. “They want to be able to go out and have a lunch and make a day of it. “We’ve been beautifying Cannibal Creek, which is our eastern boundary. “People can walk past the boundary and up to the creek. You can spend a day or half a day with the family.” The move is all about tapping into wine tourism. “The wine industry is quite challenging, it’s been very competitive,” Kirsten said. “It’s taken us a while to get to the

from the highway and we’re less than an hour from Melbourne,” she said. “We’re quite accessible. “It’s right at the beginning of Gippsland. It’s a really good starting point for people. “We want to build on our information

for other things to do. “We have a selection of wines from other vineyards in Gippsland, so we’re drawing people down to these other venues as well. “The more we offer in the area, it will become a destination.”

HORTICULTURE SERVICES HELP OTHERS TO GROW AND THRIVE

MANUFACTURING Sponsor

The winner of this year’s Manufacturing award is Powerplants Australia. Powerplants offers a wide variety of products and service to the horticultural industry, manufacturing its technologies and accessories at its Hallam headquarters. Director Carl van Loon said Powerplants Australia provided customers with innovative tailored solutions allowing owners and managers to “focus on growing your business, while we take care of all your service and maintenance requirements”. Powerplants Australia was born in 1994. “I was working for my dad and we had a plant nursery,” Mr van Loon said. “I used to do all this technical work for him - climate control systems and all that sort of stuff. “I was self-taught. “Whenever I was buying things, we were buying greenhouse equipment

from chicken shed manufacturers. “There wasn’t a proper horticulture industry. “You were buying stuff from people

who didn’t know anything about plants. “I realised there was a niche for it and started the business with a

couple of family members. “We gradually built it up from there. I had no intention whatsoever of getting into the horticulture industry. “I was going to be an engineer. Somehow it drew me back.” Today Powerplants Australia employs about 30 people and food production is the major part of the business. “We design and install and service systems for growing food - tomatoes, capsicums, cucumbers, eggplants, lettuce, leafy greens, herbs - basically anything that grows in the ground or grows in greenhouses, that’s our main target now. “People seem to be moving towards better and better quality and that’s what we’re all about - helping growers to produce really high quality crops without pesticides, without fungicides and sprays by giving the plants a really good climate.” Powerplants’ customers include last year’s Casey Cardinia Business of the Year Australian Fresh Leaf Herbs.

DENTIST KNOWS THE GREEN DRILL ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY Sponsor

Winner Beaconsfield Dental Finalist Ten-Rose International Simmental Fleckvieh

Beaconsfield Dental has been recognised as the region’s most sustainable business for the third year in a row. The dental practice has dominated the Environmental Sustainability category since 2015, also winning in 2016 and now 2017. Beaconsfield Dental was established in 1988 by Dr Robert Panjkov. Mr Panjkov said the practice was proud of its green credentials. Beaconsfield Dental has 60 solar panels which are capable of generating up to 100 KWH in one day. Double glazing, full insulation, solar hot water, LED lighting, water tanks for the garden and toilet flush are standard features at Beaconsfield Dental. The garden has more than 500 indigenous plants to complement the surrounding Akoonah Park. Mr Panjkov said he had solar panels at his family home for years and so it was a natural progression to approach

business with an environmental focus from the beginning. “We have solar hot water and 60 solar panels which have a wireless device that displays the electricity generated, carbon dioxide and money saved. “Patients are regularly shown the wireless device to educate them as it is kept in one of the treatment rooms. “The design of the building includes low-allergy paint, double glazing, LED lighting and wall, ceiling and floor insulation. “The water tanks have a capacity of 10,000 litres which are fed into the toilets and the 500-plant indigenous garden drip-sprinkler system.

“I’m also thinking about getting an electric charger port for electric cars in the car park. “We currently have about four or five water tanks and I’d like to double that and maybe get a filtration system so that we could be self-sufficient from the water supply. “We’ve encouraged customers to take it upon themselves to think more about the environment, too.” Beaconsfield Dental also uses biodegradable dental products and environmentally friendly cleaning and kitchen supplies, including a compost bin. Mr Panjkov said staff were educated

about recycling paper and encouraged to reduce printing by viewing documents on the computer. “We do it to be self-sufficient. Solar electricity generates a lot of power and it saves money. “It also gives you that warm and fuzzy feeling that you’re doing the right thing. It’s nice to leave a legacy,” he said. “The dentist isn’t everybody’s favourite thing, so we try to make it a fun place and to make people feel comfortable. “We’re always learning things about the new technological advances in renewable energy.”

TRAVEL AGENTS HAVE PACKED A LOT IN The winner of the Tourism award for the second year in a row is Safir Tours. Nayaz Noor and Suchitra Reddy are the CEO and director respectively of the Berwick based Safir Tours and what they’ve accomplished in just four-and-ahalf years in Australia is impressive. Between them, they have more than 60 years of experience in the travel industry having both spent over three decades with tour operators and travel agencies in the United States, the Middle East and India. But the latest chapter of their story has brought them to Australia - where they had no family and few connections until a few short years ago. But the challenge of setting up their business in a completely new evironment is one they’ve truly excelled at. Safir Tours is a destination management company that customises all its itineraries based on the requirements of its clients. Born in India, Nayaz and Suchitra predominantly work with Indian clients from their home country, the Middle East and the United States who are looking to travel to Australia. “We started operating on 1 March 2013,” Nayaz said. “We were wondering when we were going to get our first client. Our first client was an Indian student studying in Adelaide whose parents were going to visit Australia. “She wanted things set up for them here to visit Sydney, the Gold Coast, and Cairns, so we put things together.” Nayaz and Suchitra were initially excited, yet somewhat sceptical, when

setting up their business in Australia. “It was all new to us - the whole business environment in Australia is very different to what we were used to in India or the US,” Nayaz said. “It took us a little bit of time to understand how it works. We found it easier than doing things in India because people are friendly here - they’re honest

and they’re straightforward. They’re more direct. “The Indian market is very, very complicated. It’s very fragmented nothing is set in stone and even the wealthiest of travellers will check with five different agencies and check everywhere online to try and get the lowest price.

“When most people in India get to know us, they know that once they send their clients to Safir Tours they won’t have to worry. They can sleep easy.” The company’s strength lies in its hands-on approach, the worldwide experience of its founders, and the strong relationship it holds with its partners and suppliers.

BIG IDEAS PUSH THE BOUNDARIES BUSINESS AND PROFESSIONAL SERVICES Sponsor

Ideas Ministry creative director Natalie Birch (right) with sponsor Rebbecca Martin from AJ Recruitment.

Ideas Ministry has edged out heavy-hitters Direct Management and Successful Endeavours to take out the Business and Professional Services award. Ideas Ministry specialises in making brands do the selling for its clients. Natalie Birch is the creative director of the Casey-based business. On her website Ms Birch describes herself as an “ideasmith”. “We combine our great ideas with expert skills in graphic design and marketing and collaborate with other creative professionals like photographers, web designers, copywriters and printers to offer a complete branding solution which reels in your dream customers,” Ms Birch said. “Anyone can design, but it takes personality to come up with great ideas. “At Ideas Ministry we like to find what’s different about you, and use that to your best advantage

across brand development and marketing. Draw a square and we’ll think outside it. “Where many designers will simply take your design brief and follow it, we go a step further and help you to create and fulfil the brief. “We research your industry, market, target customers and competitors, so that we’re starting every project with a really sound idea of what we’re doing, and can deliver you premium results the first time.” Ms Birch has immersed herself in graphic design and creative art for more than 15 years. She was taught by the same lecturer who taught children’s book illustrator Graeme Base of Animalia fame. “We see things differently at Ideas Ministry. Anyone can design, but it takes personality to come up with great ideas. “We’re boundary pushers. Alternative explorers. Your business think tank,” she said.

TAKING HEART FROM JOB OPPORTUNITIES SOCIAL ENTERPRISE Sponsor

Winner Waverley Industries Finalists Kare ONE, Casey and District Multiple Birth Association

Waverley Industries’ reputation as a business with a heart has been firmly cemented with its third award in the Social Enterprise category. Waverley Industries has made this category its own, winning in 2015, 2016 and, now, 2017. The not-for-profit organisation commenced operations in November 1984 with the aim of providing employment opportunities for people with special needs, in particular intellectually disabled adults.

THEIR WORK ENRICHES THEIR LIVES AND BUILDS THEIR SELFESTEEM…

It’s always a team effort at Waverley Industries.

The business employs more than 250 disabled adults at its Waverley Industries Notting Hill site and at its new packaging factory in Star Crescent, Hallam. Waverley Industries opened its 4000-square metre factory in Hallam in 2016, creating 40 jobs for people with disabilities. Director and chief executive Frank Cresia said the expansion enabled the business to develop its accredited training programs to neighbouring special schools.

“We’ve created a lot of new jobs,” he said. “Our success is our people. “That’s our essence and our growth - people with disabilities.” Across its Hallam and Notting Hill locations, workers specialise in packaging solutions, assembly work, manufacturing, mail outs and catering. Mr Cresia said that Waverley Industries was proud to play an important role in the lives of its employees.

“Their work enriches their lives and builds their self-esteem, knowing that they are producing things that we, as a community, need,” he said. “They still receive their disability support pension, so working with us provides a supplement to that.” Waverley Industries makes it a priority to reach out to special needs schools to provide employment opportunities. Working with Waverley Industries

since 2001, Mr Cresia has seen it develop into a thriving business. Assisted by a team of hardworking volunteers, he said the business provided its customers with more than just high-quality products and services at competitive prices. “We’ve gone from an organisation on its knees to a thriving, sustainable, business model,” he said. “Customers see that they’re providing job opportunities for people that wouldn’t otherwise be working.”

Darran Scott directing on the set of his film Spirit of the Game. “They form a fear that others will disbelieve them and the feeling that it’s their fault.” In a victim impact statement, a mother who had voiced her concerns about Scott’s behaviour said she was ostracised by many fellow church members and friends. She was labelled as “mentally unwell” for airing her suspicions. Another parent spoke of bearing a “heavy burden” for allowing her children to stay with “this monster”. Judge Smallwood said Scott still had the support of his wife and members of his church - though the church itself had since ex-communicated him. Scott recently reported to a psychologist that as a child he was sexually abused by neighbouring boys and had been sexually assaulted by soldiers while in the Army. He was jailed for up to 10 years, with a minimum non-parole period of seven. He will be listed on the state’s sexual offenders’ register for life. One of the victims told Star News that jail will “never, ever be enough” for Scott. “It helps. At least he’s not out there harming other people. “I guess it’s a sense of validation.” The victim described Scott as a “disgusting human” who was able to fool a lot of people. “I don’t think he’ll ever understand the consequences and the harm to many, many people through his actions.”

A sexual predator who preyed on 11 boys at football clubs and a church in the South-East has been jailed for a minimum of seven years. Darran Scott, 53, groomed boys as young as 11 while he was a junior football coach and Mormon church member, Judge John Smallwood said during sentencing at Latrobe Valley County Court on 27 October. “I can only describe you ... as a sexual predator who, basically, got away with it for 25 years.” Scott - also known as Darran Page - pleaded guilty to 15 sexual offences as well as perverting the course of justice and four firearms offences but showed little remorse, the judge said. The indecent acts happened during camping and surfing trips as well as during visits and overnight stays at Scott’s home over a period of nearly 25 years since 1990, the court heard. He plied his victims with alcohol, marijuana, sleeping pills and pornography. “Don’t tell anyone. It’ll ruin me,” Scott allegedly told one of the victims. It “put the lie” to Scott’s claims that he did not know he was doing anything wrong, the judge said. Scott denied some of the allegations when he was interviewed by police in 2005, the judge noted. The accused didn’t seek treatment at that stage but later sexually abused five further victims. Scott’s letter written to one of his victims shortly before sentencing was “self-pitying”, Judge Smallwood said. “You’ve ruined lives,” the judge said. “The circumstances of all this offending over such a long period of time and the damage you did to so many lives can only be viewed as disgusting, in my view.” Victims typically lost their childhood and their confidence. They felt anger, shame, became anti-social, their education disrupted and they found intimate relationships difficult, the court heard. “They wondered why you did it to them and questioned their own sexuality,” Judge Smallwood said.

… BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE The editor’s desk It’s not too often a council can pull off an infrastructure spend of well over $100 million and not attract a chorus of disapproval. At the weekend, Casey Council did pretty much that as it unveiled the new Bunjil Place development in Narre Warren. The ambitious $125 million project - the largest undertaken by a local government body in the nation - has had its detractors. That was early on though and they were mostly the usual suspects. A huge majority of the thousands of people who filed through the new building over the opening weekend activities left open-mouthed and impressed. Casey mayor Sam Aziz referred to Bunjil Place’s “soon to be award-winning design”, which architect Richard Francis said was based on the wings of an eagle and the organic melding of many pathways underneath. The complex has a theatre, art gallery, library, entertainment spaces and council offices - all state of the art. It is spectacular, yet functional, and is being touted as an asset for not only Casey, but Melbourne’s South-East and beyond. It gives to the arts and culture community what the equally ambitious Casey Fields has given to the sporting community. Casey is by far the state’s largest council and, as such, has a rates base that allows it to pull off ambitious projects like these. Councils often cop a bad rap - sometimes deservedly so - but councillors and staff under CEO Mike Tyler deserve a round of applause for pulling this one off. Garry Howe

Welcome to Bunjil of joy By Cam Lucadou-Wells As a sign of endorsement, Casey residents “voted with their feet” at the opening of Narre Warren’s brand-new civic-arts space Bunjil Place, says mayor Sam Aziz. More than 35,000 flocked to the opening festival at the $125 million precinct’s theatres, library, gallery, cafe and plaza on 28 and 29 October - seven times exceeding the council’s projections, Cr Aziz said. Residents had expressed “tremendous joy” at the spectacular facilities. “It’s going to be the talking point of the South-East for many decades to come,” Cr Aziz said. “People are walking out of the library saying they want to live there. They don’t want to leave the place.” His message to residents was: “We’ve built it and now we hand it over to you. “Please come and enjoy it as often as you can because it’s there for you.” The council’s courage to commit to the biggest municipal council project in the state’s history had been vindicated, he said. It was delivered before time and under budget, with the project to be paid off within nine years. “The planning behind it was second-tonone.” In upcoming events, the library will be officially opened by Local Government Minister Marlene Kairouz on 3 November and Casey’s first council meeting at Bunjil Place will take place on 9 November. The project was partly funded by the Federal Government’s $10 million grant and a State Government grant of $750,000 for the library. Cr Aziz didn’t wish to “slap the hand” of successive state governments for not contributing more to the regional project. “We lobbied hard for the state and federal

governments ... (regardless) we have been able to successfully deliver the project in our own right.” He forecast Bunjil Place as being “10 per cent” of Casey Council’s vision to be a Smart City and Australia’s most liveable city. As part of that, the council has planned a $4 billion wish-list for roads, public transport, services and infrastructure ahead of next year’s State Election. La Trobe Federal MP Jason Wood congratulated Casey Council in a video message with Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull in Canberra that was played to Gala Dinner guests on Thursday evening. The exhibition space could showcase some of the region’s famous artists such as Tom Roberts and Arthur Streeton as well as its contemporary creatives, Mr Wood said. Mr Turnbull congratulated Mr Wood for his

“I hope that the fee structure will be reasonable and allow all local groups, not just the well-to-do the opportunity to use Bunjil Place.“ Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan said the State Government’s library grant was the largest amount available in the Living Libraries Infrastructure Fund. “The new library will feature state-of-theart facilities and will be a wonderful asset and encourage more opportunities for participation in this community.” South-Eastern Metropolitan MP Inga Peulich said she’d comment on the project at the end of the week. “My focus will be entirely on trying to defeat the government’s euthanasia bill (this week),” Ms Peulich said. Gembrook MP Brad Battin did not respond prior to deadline.

“advocacy and passion for your community” in securing federal funding for Bunjil Place. “It will bring together the extraordinary talent in your community,” Mr Turnbull told viewers. “We’re proud to say Bunjil Place is your place.” Narre Warren South State MP Judith Couacaud Graley said she hoped that the project wouldn’t cause ratepayers financial pain. “The City of Casey has been adamant that they could fund the construction of Bunjil Place through a combination of savings, a loan and funding from the Commonwealth, so I would hope there will be no attempts to raise rates in the coming years.” Ms Graley said she’d been vocal on the need for community meeting and event spaces in Casey.

Here’s what’s special about Bunjil Place - in a grid-shell Casey’s residents will soon discover the new arts hub and council offices at Bunjil Place’s opening festival on 27 and 28 October. The $125 million precinct boasts massive features such as a three-storey library, 800-seat theatre, a multi-purpose studio space with retractable seating, a function centre and art gallery. Aside from the overwhelming scale, there is plenty of thoughtful detail. Here are some of the less well-known features of Bunjil Place: War memorial grove The Narre Warren war memorial - including its historic marble monuments - has been relocated from outside the old council offices to Bunjil Place. The pillars are fixed in a small bluestone amphitheatre, the words ‘We Will Remember Them’ blasted with red sand and inscribed into its floor.

'Lest We Forget' is spelled in Morse Code at the memorial grove. 174202 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS Among the thoughtful details are 17 uplights representing the first 17 ships that left Port Phillip bound for the Gallipoli campaign in October 1914.

IT’S NONE OF OUR BUSINESS BUT… Rown trip from Little River Television personality Catriona Rowntree hosted Friday night’s Casey Cardinia Business Awards. Making herself available for hosting duties far from her Geelong home on a Friday night was not lost on Beaconsfield dentist Robert Panjkov who told her admiringly: “You’ve come a long way from Little River to the Cranny Turf Club”.

Touched by son’s praise As a mother of two boys Catriona Rowntree was visibly touched by the glowing tribute Raymond Staindl paid to his mother. Joanne Staindl, the founder of best Home Based Business winner Tour Local, was hosting a tour group and couldn’t attend the ceremony. Ray said that he admired his mum’s work ethic adding that she was his “inspiration”. Hand on her heart, Catriona said any mother would be proud to have a son speak of her in such a glowing way.

Former Casey councillor Mick Morland accepts a thumping federal grant of $10 million for Bunjil Place back in 2015.

Mick’s contribution acknowledged

Smell the mothballs Adam Davey, the owner of winning Pakenham business Davey Marine, shouted his whole team tickets to the business awards, joking that many of them had been forced to dig out long-neglected suits from the back of their cupboards for the occasion. “You can’t smell the mothballs,” host Catriona Rowntree assured them from the stage.

Special praise for the Y Waverley Industries, which provides employment for people with special needs, took out the Social Enterprise category for the third year in a row. Client Kevin McAlpine stole the show when he took to the stage to accept the award. Kevin was almost more excited about Casey YMCA’s win in the Health, Education and Well-being category than he was about Waverley Industries’ gong. Kevin told the audience that his sister attended a YMCA-run centre and he thought they were doing a great job and the award was well deserved.

Host Catriona Rowntree was impressed with Star News Group's coverage of the Casey Cardinia Business Awards. She held up a copy of the souvenir publication handed out at the end of the night, saying the Star team must have been very busy pulling it together behind the scenes.

Heartburn over Bunjil Catriona Rowntree spent time introducing herself to different sections of the audience between her official on-stage hosting duties. She had a good chat with Casey Mayor Sam Aziz about Bunjil Place, which was officially opened on the weekend. Later when she spied him ignoring the bottles of wine on his table and opting for a glass of milk she quipped: “When you’ve spent $125 million you might get a bit of heartburn”.

Now for the Middle East The enormity of the $125 million Bunjil Place project was not lost on the Casey Mayor Sam Aziz who, when apologising for the absence

of his council colleague Rosalie Crestiani at the opening ceremony due to a trip to Israel, quipped: “Now we have pulled together this project we feel we can now tackle the issue of peace in the Middle East”.

Doing the hokey-pokey The building of Bunjil Place was a nice change of pace for construction company Multiplex. Regional managing director for Victoria Graham Cottam told guests at an official launch event last Thursday night that the company relished the challenge of its eagle-inspired design. “We do a lot of vanilla - mainly apartments,“ he explained. “This one is a bit more hokey-pokey, or even strawberry.“

It was nice that former Casey mayor Mick Morland was given due recognition during the opening festivities at Bunjil Place. Mick, who was killed when hit by a car on a walk earlier this year, was turned the first sod for the project when mayor and also accepted a cheque for $10 million from the Federal Government back in 2015. Wife Kay and their daughter Rebecca Sanders were at an official launch function last Thursday night, where his contribution was acknowledged several times. Kay was fine throughout the night, but did break down when Jonathon Welch of Choir of Hard Knocks fame launched into an impromtu tribute after leading the Voices of Casey Choir through a performance in the theatre. “I wasn’t expecting that one,“ Kay said. “It’s lovely he’s being remembered though.“

Neighbourly fare Bunjil Place launch party MC Stefan Denis of Neighbours fame felt right at home at the new venue. Not only is he good friends with former Casey councillor Louise Berklemans, who was present on the night, but he noted that the caterers providing the food also fed the Neighbours cast as well.

Police officers seize drugs and edged weapons from a house in Cranbourne North. 174606 Picture: BRENDAN REES

149 Princes Highway (Lonsdale Street), Dandenong (between Foster and Webster Streets)

By Brendan Rees Police have seized four handguns, cash and drugs after executing a drug warrant at a house on Von Nida Drive in Cranbourne North on Tuesday 31 October. A 23-year-old Cranbourne woman and 29-year-old Cranbourne man have been arrested and taken into custody. Drugs and weapons charges have been laid and the investigation is ongoing. Sergeant Chris Hayes, of the Dandenong Divisional Response Unit (DRU) said four pistols, ammunition and edged weapons were seized during the raid. “At this stage we are looking at four pistols. But they themselves are also subject to further forensic examination,” Sgt Hayes said. “An analysis is being undertaken in relation to the drugs.” He said some equipment was seized in relation to alleged trafficking of drugs but “the exact equipment is unspecified at this stage.” Sgt Hayes said the edged weapons were “commercially available manufactured” type implements of varying lengths. He said the street value of the drugs was unknown, adding they “can’t even estimate just be-

cause we are still awaiting analysis in relation to what they are.” Sgt Hayes said it was a “good effort” from his team of investigators of the DRU. “A rather high impact for the local community, it’s obviously pro-active work designed to ensure their safety.” A Cranbourne North resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said the area near Von Nida Drive was quiet. “It just happened near us. When I saw the front window broken this morning I thought it was suspicious. There were plenty of cars.” She said there was “no noise, no fighting, no screaming” ever coming from the house. “It’s quite nice living here. I hope everything is OK.” Another neighbour, who wished to be anonymous, said it was a “quiet house,” but felt concerned when police spent most of the day at the property. “We don’t really see them. I was a bit curious with a lot of police. I asked a police officer and he said it was ‘nothing serious’.” The Cranbourne man and Cranbourne woman currently in custody will face a hearing at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 1 November.

Victorian Police Minister Lisa Neville has grossly overstated the case for a drug injecting room trial in North Richmond to the Herald Sun, see “Shake-up in war on drugs", Tuesday, 31 October, by claiming “laws tackling organised crime and dealers would help stop the tragic impact on families". And that tough new penalties will now impact on the drug trade. And that a two-year trial for a heroin injecting room in North Richmond, based on the Kings Cross model is evidence-based. Well I don’t know what evidence Daniel Andrews and Lisa Neville have looked at, but I believe that neither of them have had any firsthand experience with addicts. Drug and alcohol addicted people are people who have lost all their self-respect. They

The spouses and families of addicts often experience violence in their home. Drug injecting rooms are not about changing the behaviour of addicts. They are about facilitating heroin addiction. Addicts need to be provided with incentives to participate in goal-based detoxification programs that can restore their self-respect.

Addicts need to be connected with counsellors who can help them regain their selfrespect. But while the Victorian Government can find $2 million for its senior ministers to spend on overseas junkets (see “Travel bill hits $2m luxury fare for MPs", SHS, 29 October) it cannot find money to employ qualified drug and alcohol counsellors who are unemployed. RAY’S SAY

On 25 October, The Berwick Cranbourne News Facebook Page shared a story of a renewed push being made to increase public car parking at Cranbourne railway station. Casey Resident and Ratepayers Association president Arvo Talvik said chronic overcrowding of railway car parking at Cranbourne was “out of control”. He said people could not get a car park after 7am and something desperately needed to be done. The story sparked some concerns from readers. Here is how they reacted online: Judie Hedrick: All of the above and duplicate the darn train line from Dandenong! Kellie Banks: 100 per cent yes to an extension. V-Line/Metro would need to improve a lot before more parking went in- better road maintenance of their private road, safe pedestrian access, and proper intersection with lights at Camms Road. Judie Hedrick: Cranbourne - the poor cousin, as always! Robert Wingrave: Didn’t Bracks promise to extend the line when he was elected? Steven Breen: I really don’t know here this councillor gets off? Really now? If councillors weren’t in the developers' pockets developing every available land in sight, then we would not be in this position. Estates, and more estates are being built everywhere in Casey. More land being cut up meaning more rates and more developer levies.

Resilient call By Brendan Rees

Shweta Anand, Nikita Anand and Khushi Chandrace celebrate the Hindu festival of lights.

Diwali defeats darkness By Brendan Rees One of the most significant festivals in Indian culture, Diwali, the festival of lights was celebrated in Cranbourne. More than 150 people attended the event at Balla Balla Community Centre on Saturday 14 October. Hosted by the Gippsland Indian Association (GIA) in conjunction with the organisation’s silver jubilee celebration, the event also had Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan join the celebrations as special guest. GIA secretary Praneel Chandra said Hindus celebrated this festival by illuminating their houses with traditional lamps or diyas, candles or colourful electric lights. “Lighting of lights signifies removal of darkness and ignorance from one’s life and triumph of good over evil. Prior to the night, the houses are cleaned and decorated and the night begins with prayer, followed by lighting of diyas

and candles and playing with fireworks,” Mr Chandra said. “The night eventually ends with feasting and eating of sweets. Sweets are also offered to friends and neighbours.” Mr Chandra said each year in an attempt to maintain the tradition and spirit of Diwali, GIA invited its members to bring along another family to join together in celebrating this popular festival. “To commemorate 25 years of existence of GIA, the founding members of this organisation were specially invited,” he said. “Some of these founding members had not met each other for so long; hence this event was an ideal occasion for them to catch up. Everyone who attended had a wonderful time.” Diwali or Deepawali is one of the major annual Hindu festivals. Translated in English, the word Diwali means a series of lights hence the festival is also known as the Hindu “festival of lights”.

commitment by those who work in the community was “incredibly motivating”. “Many people share the view that violence, in whatever form, in unacceptable and just want to know how to help.” Ms Robinson began her role as the Interfaith Research and Network Developer for the Uniting Church four years ago and said she had come across “countless stories” of women and their children being subjected to fear and isolation. “Public violence is not only felt by Muslims, but the type of violence I would hear about was relentless and went further than anything I myself had ever experienced. People’s fear of what was happening in the world had turned into hatred, and those who bore their hatred tended more often than not to be Muslim women,” she said. One speaker included Leading Senior Constable Maha Sukkar who joined Victoria Police in 2004 after persuading management to accept that wearing her scarf with her uniform would not be an obstacle.

Members of the community are stepping up to combat public violence against Muslim women and children. A successful event was held with Muslim community activists during a Resilient Women’s Forum staged at Lynbrook Community Centre on Friday 20 October. The workshop, led by April Robinson from the Uniting Church of Australia, allowed the community to come together and share their thoughts as well as raise awareness about women who are targets of Islamophobic violence. Ms Robinson, who has been working on the project for three years, said she was often surprised physical attacks on Muslim women and children were not widely recognised. “There have been few reports and media articles released, which means that if you are not, or have not spoken to someone who has experienced Islamophobic violence, you may not be aware,” she said. “Incidents range from being completely ignored in a shop to being spat on, pushed over, followed, or women having their scarf torn from their head, all the while hearing taunts.” “Many women I have spoken to face these encounters everyday, yet still remain resilient and committed community members. This project is not about victimising women, but acknowledging their resilience through what can be a continual struggle,” Ms Robinson said. She said the project was a “whole community approach”, adding the community needed to work together to achieve a safer environment for women and children. “It will also take a community working together to break down the fear and misunderstandings that perpetuates violence.” Ms Robinson said the level of support and

The almost $1m pavilion

First fly for the funded flag By Brendan Rees A new flagpole allows Merinda Park Learning and Community Centre (MPLCC) in Cranbourne North to fly the Australian flag for the first time. The flag was a gift from Federal Member for Holt Anthony Byrne, who said he was honoured to unveil the new flagpole and raise the flag on Wednesday 11 October. “The VCAL students and community centre members will now be able to hold their own Anzac Day and Remembrance Day services at the centre in Cranbourne to acknowledge the service and sacrifice made by Australia’s servicemen and women,” he said. “I am always pleased to support local residents and organisations like the MPLCC that aim to respect the Australian Flag and honour and commemorate Australia’s wartime heritage.” MPLCC was awarded a $1500 grant in 2016 to install a flagpole under the Saluting Their Service Commemorative Grant Program, designed to preserve Australia’s wartime heritage. MPLCC CEO Jan Gilchrist said she was delighted with the new flagpole. The flag, she said, would help students appreciate and understand the service and sacrifice of Australia’s servicemen and women in wars, conflicts and peace operations. “The flag will encourage particularly our young people, our VCAL students to understand what the significance of the flag is and also to be able to use it to do our own little Anzac Day services.” “We’re very excited now that we’ve actually got it and ready to go,” Ms Gilchrist said. The centre, which also marked its 25th anniversary this year had recently undergone a $1.15m restoration project to extend and upgrade the facility. “It’s a wonderful new space in that the foyer now has room for people to actually sit in and congregate and tables to sit and eat their lunch, whereas the students previously had nowhere to go,” said Ms Gilchrist.

Federal Member for Holt Anthony Byrne was honoured in helping raise the Australian flag with Merinda Park Learning and Community Centre CEO Jan Gilchrist at the centre in Cranbourne North. 173744 Picture: GARY SISSONS “It’s much more welcoming and friendly for people coming in the centre.” Council invested $1m in the project, with MPLCC contributing the remaining $150,000, to deliver new counselling suites, a modernised external facade of the facility, a new reception area and administration space, an upgraded commercial kitchen, new and additional bathroom amenities including an ambulant bathroom and disabled bathroom with shower, upgrades to the main hall and children’s rooms. City of Casey Mayor Cr Sam Aziz said the upgrades would enable the centre to better meet the needs of the local community. “MPLCC is one of Casey’s busiest community facilities; more than 1000 Casey residents visit the centre each week to participate in adult and youth education programs, access the childcare programs or make a booking with the centre’s counselling services,” Cr Aziz said.

It was game, set, and match for Tooradin Tennis Club after scoring a brand-new tennis pavilion. City of Casey Mayor Cr Sam Aziz was joined by Cr Geoff Ablett in the celebratory opening of the $880,000 project with members of the Tooradin Tennis Club on Monday 9 October. Located at Tooradin Recreation Reserve, the pavilion has undercover decking overlooking the club’s tennis courts, expansive community space and an office, a large kitchen and new cooking equipment, internal and external storage space and rear car parking and access ramp. Cr Aziz said council was proud to deliver the new facility which he was confident would be well utilised by residents particularly as we moved into the warmer months. “This fine building will provide the Tooradin Tennis Club and its devoted members with the facilities and amenities the club deserves while further developing their passion and drive for all things tennis,” he said. He said the new facility was “fantastic” and would “greatly assist” in helping the club to grow and attract new local members and sponsors throughout the municipality. “The benefits associated with participating in sport and physical activities are clear. We know that active residents have stronger social connections, enhanced physical and mental health, greater personal resilience and opportunities for expression of community pride. “The City of Casey will continue to invest in the development of infrastructure to enable our communities to participate in physical activity as close to home as possible, to ensure they

Cr Aziz thanked the contribution of the State Government towards the project. “This project is the result of hard work and engagement, and demonstrates what is possible when council, the State Government and local clubs form meaningful partnerships to deliver great outcomes for the community.” Tooradin Tennis Club president Dragan Jovic said the pavilion would ensure the club had the facilities to operate at “our optimum capacity.”

Night assault Casey Crime Investigation Unit is appealing for witnesses following an assault outside the Empire Nightclub in Narre Warren during the early hours of Sunday 29 October. About 12.30am, police say there was an argument over a seating booth involving two groups which turned into a “push and shove.” Detective Senior Constable Peter Warden said after the parties had been ejected by security the alleged scuffle continued on the street. He said two parties between 10 and 12 people have been allegedly involved in an assault about 50 metres from the nightclub near Lauderdale Road. “The push and shove was dealt with pretty quickly. Both parties have been kicked out, and it was down on the road away from security cameras where the next part of all these injuries has happened,” Det Sen Const Warden said. He said a female and male were treated at hospital. 12 STAR NEWS

We endeavour to promote a safe, supportive environment and culture that is established around mutual respect, understanding and co-operation that strongly embeds the college’s values. • Respect • Personal growth and achievement • Responsibility

12366203-LB44-17

As a college we are committed to student’s academic growth and personal wellbeing. We have high expectations for all students to learn, achieve personal growth and experience success. Engagement with the community and promotion of diversity are strongly valued at CESC.

As principal, I see my role is to guide the college towards consistent quality Teaching & Learning Practices, Curriculum differentiation for inclusion and nurturing positive relationships, ensuring these priorities are continually being evaluated and improved upon.

Maranatha is a safe Christian learning community in partnership with home and church that helps children find true success in life. Through a model of Christcentred education within a safe environment, we seek to inspire children to think Christianly about the world, and so use their God given gifts and talents for the benefit of others. With talented, well regarded and highly qualified Christian teachers who understand children, Maranatha students have the opportunity to learn, develop, serve, grow and excel by participating in a rigorous, challenging and engaging curriculum at either of our two well-resourced Junior Schools at Officer and Doveton or our highly regarded Middle and Senior School at Endeavour Hills.

At CESC we strongly value the importance of collaboration between teachers, parents and students and its effectiveness on students learning. Our college offers many opportunities for all students to succeed, not just through expected curriculum areas of study but through performing arts, sports, leadership and student voice. We believe in providing our students with the best learning and development experience by celebrating achievement, focussing on engagement and nurturing wellbeing. We are striving to meet all individual needs and learning styles through consistent professional development practice for all staff, understanding and knowing our students strengths and weaknesses through positive relationship building and by providing enriching experiences.

Life is a journey, but with a great foundation in the partnership that is Maranatha, children can become the fine young men and women God intended them to be.

Meeting the Challenge Providing all children with a comprehensive education, one that meets their individual needs, preparing them well for the next phase in their schooling and does so in a way that ensures they love coming to school is our focus. Breadth of curriculum choice, one which includes a strong focus on the core subjects of literacy and numeracy is a feature of our approach at Berwick Lodge. Robotics and coding, radio and film-making and a whole school Chinese (Mandarin) program are a small sample of the breadth of curriculum on offer at our school. This year our senior students once again visited Singapore as guests of our partner school, Tampines P.S. as part of our international learning program. Berwick Lodge was recognised for excellence in the Performing Arts this year – winning the Wakakirri Victorian Best History Story Award and being one of the 4 schools nationwide shortlisted for the national award. We are also proud to have been selected as one of the 40 most innovative schools in Australia by The Educator for our work in the field of student agency in learning with the Learning Maps project. Student wellbeing is at the heart of our approach to ensuring that all children feel both valued and safe. Our partnership with the Alannah & Madeline Foundation as a Victorian Ambassador school bears testimony to our commitment to the wellbeing of all students. We provide individual tours of our school for all interested parents. Why not call us and see for yourself? Henry Grossek Principal Berwick Lodge Primary School

In order for young people to succeed in an increasingly complex environment, children need a high quality education; to be taught skills to achieve success, and to think critically, enabling them to become good decision-makers, responsible global citizens and lifelong learners.

Firefighters responded to a mulch fire on Moores Road in Clyde on Monday 30 October. Crews from Clyde, Devon Meadows, Cranbourne, Tooradin and Berwick were called to the fire at about 1pm at the market garden property. Cranbourne First Lieutenant Dennis Latchford said the pile of mulch was about the size of a house. “Lucky it was good weather conditions for us. It wasn’t going anywhere. It was a messy job really, that you pump so much water on it you create a bit of a mud pit,” he said. Mr Latchford said the property owner was quick to separate the mulch with his tractor. “He’s done the right thing when it’s flared up and started to pull it apart. Unfortunately he blew both his tyres on his tractor so he couldn’t use it for a little while. We pumped water on it for probably about three hours.” He said warmer conditions on Sunday 29 October played a role in the fire as the mulch self-combusted. “It gets a lot of heat in the mulch, and if the wind whips through it you get a bit of ember flare-up. There was a reasonable amount of smoke but there was no warnings issued,” Mr Latchford said. Twenty-five firefighters contained the fire by 5pm but were called back at 9.30pm. “The wind changed direction a little bit and flared back up again,” he said. The Lang Lang brigade was also called to bring in their lighting unit as firefighters brought the fire under control at midnight. “It wasn’t really going to spread anywhere. The grass wasn’t long.” Mr Latchford said the surrounding area was safe and no property was damaged. “We could only use water. We can’t use foam because it’s a market garden. If we use foam it’s going to contaminate all his vegies he’s growing.”

At Cranbourne East Secondary College we share a common moral purpose: ‘Giving every student every opportunity to exceed their potential and provide a high quality pathway to success.’

CHAIRO CHRISTIAN SCHOOL PRINCIPAL – PETER WELLS Pete Wells is excited about the innovation and development that he experiences each day at Chairo’s Pakenham Campus, but is equally committed to honouring the school’s longstanding mission: to provide excellence in Christ-centred education, in partnership with families, within a caring Christian community. He explained: ‘We provide Kinder to Year 12 education within a genuinely Christian school culture. Our values, curriculum and programs are all delivered from a Christian worldview perspective. It’s our desire to see boys and girls experience care and challenge that helps them develop into young men and women of great character, who are able to positively impact the world around them. ‘We hope and pray that each Chairo student feels safe and welcomed, as they participate in a strong, healthy, friendly and uplifting community that values the unique capabilities and character of every child.’ Pete holds a degree in Psychology and a Master of Educational Leadership. Prior to becoming Principal this year, he taught for many years at Chairo before taking on the role of Head of School in an International Baccalaureate school in Indonesia. Outside of his work in education, Pete is an award-winning novelist and father of three active boys. With modern facilities in a pleasant rural environment, an excellent school culture, and a host of co-curricular activities, Chairo provides a dynamic and rigorous learning environment. Introducing your

School Principals Ly n dh urs t Secondary College

Konnie Prades

Cranbourne Secondary College has a long and proud history of servicing the educational needs of the Cranbourne community. We recently celebrated our 40th anniversary and it reminded us all of our very strong links with the citizens of Cranbourne who continue to make us their school of choice. During our 40 year history our school community has become more multicultural, and with the help of our Harmony and Multipride programs, we have maintained a highly inclusive and tolerant school population.

Lyndhurst Secondary College is a progressive learning community focused on creating the unique circumstances for each child to experience success.

I extend a warm welcome to all in our community. This year our Annual Theme “After Much Debate Peter Stood Up” calls on our students to stand up and be counted. It is a calling that aims to inspire our students to have confidence to strive for the best in themselves and challenges them to make a difference in the local community and the larger world in which we all live. This aligns with our school motto “Be Not Afraid” and our College vision where, “As a Catholic community, we aspire to lead in faith, guide with love and inspire through learning”.

Overall our median study score remained steady at 27 with 2.1% of students achieving a study score of 40 or more. Explicit goals have been set to raise the bar in 2017. This will be supported by such programs as the VCE Study Hub and whole school roll-up for the last three weeks of the academic year. New Facilities Development of the East Campus continues in 2017 with work commencing on a Year 9 Learning Centre. The West Campus will also experience a building project to ensure learning facilities continue to cater for the 21st century learner. 1119717-LB08-14 1162239-DJ44-14

12363139-HM44-17

Student wellbeing is our other primary focus. Students are offered many options for getting involved in College life, including sporting teams, lunchtime clubs/activities and performing arts opportunities. Student voice is highly valued, through avenues such as School Council, SRC (Student Representative Council) and through focus groups and forums. Our Wellbeing Team also run proactive programs for students, such as building resilience and stress management, and offer individual interventions as needed.

In 2016 140 Year 12 students, 137 students were awarded their VCE. 22 successfully completed their VCAL. Our Dux was our Environment Captain, Will Veenman with an ATAR score of 96.02. Will has successfully gained a place at Monash University to study Science.

12363442-RC44-17

Programs such as SNIP (Student Numeracy Individualisation Program), VCOP writing development, and Reading Block are just some of the ways we focus on literacy and numeracy instruction that is targeted to the individual student’s point of need. The success of such programs is clear; this year’s NAPLAN results demonstrated that our students’ growth equalled, or surpassed, that of the state average in all areas.

These new facilities will enable our College to capitalise on the outstanding work of our teachers and further improve on our academic standards. They will also enhance the capacity to holistically develop our students by supporting their wellbeing and pathways needs. This helps to develop well rounded citizens that are well prepared for the world of work or further education, and who can contribute positively as members of the Cranbourne community.

John Jovic Principal

Welcome to the 2017 School Year

As a small school, we pride ourselves on knowing each of our students well. We strategically plan to meet each of their individual needs. Teachers meet weekly in teams to discuss their students’ learning progress, as measured through a range of data sources. This allows a learning plan for each student that is unique to them.

Our facilities have continuously been modernised over the last 10 years, and I am pleased to announce that the next exciting stage of capital works will commence at the end of 2017. We will have a new Building and Construction facility operating in 2018, and significant facility upgrades in the areas of Science, Visual Arts, Technology and Student Wellbeing.

There are many features of our College that can be highlighted. Some of these include our strong pastoral care program, a oneto-one netbook program and our very successful Senior School program. Visitors are welcome to learn about these programs and more, and I encourage you to make an appointment and come along and see our College in person.

Chris Black

Enrolments for Year 7 2018 close on March 17th. For further information pleases contact our College Registrar.

I invite you to join us for a tour to see how Lyndhurst Secondary College can be the school of choice for your family. They run every Wednesday (no appointment necessary) at 11:00am.

The school has undertaken a complete leadership restructure to support the implementation of our improvement strategies and programs that are designed to achieve the aims and goals of our Strategic Plan. Next year, we welcome experienced Assistant Principals, Ms Nalini Naidu from Kambrya College and Mr Michael Jaremczuk from Emerald Secondary College, who are joining our team led by Assistant Principals, Mr David Mockridge and Ms Sherri Lake and our Business Manager Ms Tracy Jackson.

Every school has their unique flair on how they cater for the educational needs of their students. The choice of the ideal school for your child is one of the most important made by families. When you enter CSPS you will feel and see the difference of a medium sized, semi-rural environment that caters for the needs of the child. We encourage students to thrive on positive challenges that promote confidence and creativity and in taking ownership of learning to grow into responsible, happy, resilient and socially fulfilled individuals. Please contact the school to arrange a personalised tour with the Principals and school captains.

Our school motto of Community Spirit Partnerships to Success, represents how we work together to ensure that the school environment is happy, secure, challenging and encourages cooperation and responsibility. CSPS endeavours to empower teachers, students and community members to embrace learning, achieve their personal best and strengthen emotional, social and physical wellbeing. We strongly value Positivity, Persistence, Pride and Passion.

Last year, the College completed an education review and developed a new Strategic Plan to take us into 2020. We established two priority areas focused on improving student engagement, wellbeing and achievement. These two areas are developing; Excellence in Teaching and Learning and a Positive Climate for Learning.

Cranbourne South Primary School (CSPS) represents 60 years of a proud history. Polvin fencing for safety By Rebecca Skilton Joining the likes of Flemington, Caulfield and Yarra Valley Racecourses, Cranbourne Turf Club’s mounting yard has received a fresh makeover, thanks to the team at Polvin Fencing Solutions. But despite the new fence’s crisp white finish and visually stunning qualities, Polvin Sales manager Jackie Hanslo explained that it wasn’t all about the looks, with the Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) fencing placing equine safety at the forefront of the company’s purpose. “Polvin PVC fencing is specifically designed for horse industry to be a safer fence,” Jackie explained. “Our products are a higher quality PVC, have a high UV resilience and won’t rust, rot or peel. They also have a little bit of flexibility which means the product won’t shatter and create shards. So, if a horse were to collide with our fencing it would give, creating a softer impact and minimising the damage to the horse.” Rolling out over 230 metres of Polvin Deluxe Barrier fencing at the racetrack in early October, the new PVC fencing replaced the track’s aluminium loop top fence. “Polvin fencing is a leader in fencing products and has supplied the Victorian Racing industry for a number of years,” Cranbourne Turf Club CEO Neil Bainbridge said. “Their fencing is regarded as the industry leader and has been installed at numerous venues across Victoria including our metropolitan tracks. “The new horse safe fencing structure installed at Cranbourne will ensure the best available facilities for our patrons and our participants.” Based in Dandenong South, Polvin was established in 2005 by Les Hanslo. With a back-

Jackie Hanslo and Lauren Stellema of Polvin Fencing Solutions with CEO of the Cranbourne Turf Club Neil Bainbridge alongside the new Polvin Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS Fencing at the Cranbourne racetrack. 174422 ground in PVC manufacturing and the equestrian world, the Hanslo family are not only confident in the effectiveness of their product but have firm knowledge of what the equestrian industry requires. As such, since their inception, Polvin Fencing Solutions have installed over 400,000 metres of running rail and fencing around Australian racetracks.

“We started off as PVC manufacturers many years ago and then started the fencing company in 2006, so we’re essentially experts in the PVC industry which is why we’re so confident about our quality,” Jackie said. “We are a horse family and were looking at upgrading our personal fencing. We got (PVC) samples from overseas and did testing and realised that even though America and Eng-

land have good products, they weren’t going to stand up to Australian conditions. So from there, we designed our own formula as a higher quality product that was better than industry standards and to suit Australia. “But we are still a very equestrian family - we take it quite seriously so we understand horses and what they need.”

Cup still a show-stopper By Brendan Rees It’s that time of the year again, the race that stops a nation. And for the first time people can experience the Melbourne Cup Day races at the Cranbourne Turf Club on Melbourne Cup Day, Tuesday 7 November. With an expected crowd of nearly 6000 people, there will be live music and entertainment on course to backdrop an incredible day of racing. Cranbourne Turf Club CEO Neil Bainbridge said attendees wouldn’t have to worry about missing the big race as there would be a big screen with all of the action from Flemington. “It’s a great opportunity for us as club, great opportunity for the vast population in the South East to come to their love track; enjoy Melbourne Cup Day. This is the first time as a club we’ve been fortunate enough to run Melbourne Cup Day,” he said. There will be free entry and activities entry for kids and an enticing offer for adults too. “We’ve got a special offer on at the moment for adults. Admittedly, its only $15 for adults for a ticket but if you go online and buy a ticket you can buy one, get one free which is a great two for one offer running at the moment,” Mr Bainbridge said. “We think it’ll be a very good affordable day. All the big screens on course will be promoting the Melbourne Cup. What better way to spend Melbourne Cup Day than at your local track.” He said there would be an opportunity for those wanting to enjoy all of the racing action right from the mounting yard to the winning post. “It’ll be great for everyone that wants to get involved. We’re certainly putting on lots of kids and family activities, and a big carnival on course. It’ll be a great day for everyone.” Mr Bainbridge said the Turf Club celebrated a wonderful 150 years of racing in April this year and next week’s Melbourne Cup Day at the Turf Club would be a great way to “finish off a big spring.” “It’s a big couple of weeks for us, but probably none bigger than Melbourne Cup Day. I’m sure it’ll be an enormous day. I don’t think we’ve put on at the Cranbourne races over the years as much entertainment and activities to make it a real family day.” “We’re delighted for the first time Cranbourne has been given the opportunity on the day that stops the nation. We certainly encourage a lot of people to come out and enjoy the races,” he said. He said parking and kids rides will be free with pony rides on course for “families who want to get up close and experience riding a horse themselves.” Activities for kids also include dodgem cars, rock star ride, animals of Oz, tea cup ride, pirate ship, jumping castles and more. Gates open at 10.30am with the first race at 12.30pm and last race at 4.15pm. Mr Bainbridge said the club was excited to also host the popular City of Casey Tricodes race day at Cranbourne Turf Club on Saturday 18 November.

Racegoers are set to enjoy all the racing action from Cranbourne Turf Club on Melbourne Cup Day. 173921

Organisers hope punters will follow Steve Wright and Carina Woolcomb’s lead and settle in for a great Cup day on the grass. 173921

GROW. BUSINESS

Casey Cardinia Region

Perseverance pays off By Narelle Coulter Businesses as diverse as a winery and an electrical contractor were among those hailed as the region’s best at the annual Casey Cardinia Business Awards on Friday 27 October. Business owners, managers and staff from across the region gathered at the Cranbourne Turf Club for the event, hosted by television personality Catriona Rowntree. Business of the Year went to Hallam-based Powerplant Project Services. Owner and director Greg Plant accepted the award saying with some understatement: “That’s pretty good. “To me it is proof that if you have an idea and are prepared to work hard you can do anything,” Mr Plant said. Earlier in the evening, Mr Plant accepted the top award in the Trades and Construction category. Newcomer Natalie Birch, the creative director of Ideas Ministry, was shocked to win the Business and Professional Services Award. “I’m stoked,” she said with a huge grin. “This is our first year and I love working with the local community. The awards are recognition of people doing their best for the community and business.” The Health Education and Wellbeing Award was won by YMCA Casey. Area manager Barry Harrison said the YMCA enjoyed a close working relationship with the City of Casey. “We have six centres and individual centres win awards but this award is about us working together as a whole team. It’s about us working together for the community.” Tour Local’s award for best Home-Based Business was accepted by Ray Staindl on behalf of owner and founder Joanne Staindl. Ray paid tribute to the hard work and vision of his mother who couldn’t attend because she was on the road hosting a tour. “I want to thank my mother. It was my mother who started this business nine years ago. “Between the two of us we have kept it going. She’s always been about people and she’s always been my inspiration.” Winner of the Hospitality Business of the Year was Cannibal Creek Winery. Owner Kirsten Hardiker said it was an honour “to be recognised in our own territory”. The manufacturing award went to Powerplants Australia. Owner Carl van Loon said the firm had gone through tough times in the last eight years with stiff competition from European manufacturers. However, just last week Powerplants had signed a large contract with a US company. “It is great to be able to manufacture things here in Australia. It is amazing what you can do when you keep persevering and pushing through,” Mr van Loon said. The title of best new business went to Pakenham-based Davey Marine. Owner Adam Davey said his team members, which were all present at the awards “are everything”. “If you look after your staff, then they will look after your customers.” No business on the winner’s stage has gone through more drama and hard times than Emerald Village Pharmacy, winner of the Retail Award which was gutted by fire in 2015. Owner Louisa Slammers said the award recognised that the business had “come back strongly” thanks to the support of the Emerald community. Waverley Industries won the Social Enterprise category for the third year in a row prompting representative Noella Malabar to encourage business to “open their doors” to workers with a disability.

Tour Local’s Ray Staindl with Karlee Daye. 174253 Beaconsfield Dental principal Dr Robert Panjkov urged other businesses to go green when he accepted the Environmental Sustainability Award. The award for the region’s most popular business went to Twisted Sista, Upper Level at Fountain Gate. Twisted Sista won the People’s Choice category with more than 900 votes. Casey Mayor Sam Aziz said 141 businesses had entered the awards and that all the nominated businesses had made an “outstanding contribution to the regional economy”. Cardinia Mayor Brett Owen said the two councils were working hard to create new jobs in the region. Victorian Planning Authority spokesperson Paul Cassidy told the audience that in the past five years thousands of new jobs had been created across the two councils, more than the number of new households.

SPORT

Hunter waits for AFL call By Nick Creely Dandenong Stingrays midfielder Hunter Clark is as tough as nails, wins the football relentlessly and leaps for the ball like a key position player. That’s why the Peninsula product is one of the most enticing prospects in this year’s draft pool. After a stunning purple patch in the second half of the year, Clark was the runaway winner in the Stingrays’ Best and Fairest award, averaging almost 27 disposals, half a dozen tackles and almost a goal a game. Life is hectic at the moment for the Stingray who will be juggling his VCE exams over the next month while awaiting draft day on 24 November where he will learn which of the 18 AFL clubs he will begin his journey with in 2018. “Yeah, it’s all pretty busy at the moment but there is still a little while to go (before the draft), so I’m just trying to keep it simple and pretty normal. “Not much has changed with what I’m doing and how I’m acting, but it’s definitely a different feeling getting close to the draft,” he said. “I’ve been fine now that the season is done, it’s definitely become more of a focus (the draft) - whatever happens, happens, and if I’m lucky enough to be picked up, it’s what I’ve wanted to do forever so I’d be stoked. “There’s still a long way to go, I’ve put in a lot of hard work to get here.” After the initial nervousness that accompanies being interviewed by a range of different clubs from all parts of the country, Clark said he now enjoys the process, despite a few differences between Victorian and interstate clubs. “Speaking to the clubs the first few times

was nerve-racking, I wasn’t sure what to expect, to be honest, but once you do a couple you start to get used to them, as most of them are pretty similar with the types of things they ask you. Once you get comfortable, you even start to enjoy them,” he said. “They (interstate clubs) have similar basis questions, but they’d ask you how you’d settle in having to move, or your thoughts on it, so I suppose they want to know what you’re like as a person and whether you’re willing to take on the challenge.” Clark was hampered early in the season by a niggling injury, but bounced back to end the TAC Cup season as one of its most dominant midfielders, while also earning the prestigious honour of playing for Team Enright in the Under 18’s All Stars match on AFL Grand Final day on 30 September. “In the first part of the year I was just trying to get my body right, I missed the most of pre-season with a groin injury and that hung around for most of the year, and in the first half I wasn’t playing full game time,” he said. “In the last couple of months, I’ve played my best footy, but that’s when my body had overcome that, and was able to play full games. “It was just awesome (playing on the ‘G) I’m a Richmond man also, so to play on that day was special - running on the ‘G was surreal, and when I was running out there I was just imagining running out there for an AFL Grand Final, and you just take in the little things.” He also believes the club out of Shepley Oval could be in for a decent draft haul, with up to half a dozen names likely to be taken. “I think we have a pretty strong chance of quite a few drafted - potentially there could be five or six, and maybe a couple of 19-year-olds, we’ve got quite a bit of talent,” he said.

Swans simply outclassed and looking for lessons learnt By Nick Creely Despite losing their fourth consecutive match in the opening month of the Victorian Premier Cricket season, Casey-South Melbourne coach Prabath Nissanka remains confident that the lessons learnt will hold them in good stead as they look to put some points on the board. In the Swans’ match with region rivals Dandenong at Shepley Oval on Saturday, they weren’t bereft of effort; they were simply outclassed by the most in-form side in the competition. The game was played squarely in the court of Dandy as soon as Lachie Sperling and his Swans won the toss and elected to bat. In need of a strong start, the Swans got the exact opposite - and perhaps with very little luck from the umpires. Kasun Suriaratchie (0) fell in the opening moments caught behind off Darren Pattinson (4/19), but appeared to have clearly missed the ball, while only a few overs later, skipper Sperling (5) middled a ball into his pad but was swiftly given LBW off left arm quick Jak Jowett (1/46). The two early wickets meant the Swans couldn’t get any momentum with their batting, as Pattinson wound back the clock in a stellar white ball spell that left the visitors hanging by a thread at 5/37. As they did last week, Chris Benedek (23) steadied the ship while Dylan Hadfield (43) played the aggressor and it worked a treat, lifting the score just above 100 with a decent launching pad for the remaining 20 overs. Hadfield in particular struck the ball sweetly with a series of cracking cover shots bringing the Swans back into the contest, while Benedek showed poise as the Panthers hardly put a foot wrong. But impressive left arm spinner Akshat Buch (2/24) ignited the flame once more with a clever quicker ball that saw Jacques Augstin stump Benedek before slowing one up and forcing Hadfield to spoon a ball to Donnell at cover - it changed the game. Brendan Rose (30 not out) and Leigh Diston (14) then lifted late with some smart shot selection, lifting the Swans to 9/155 off their 50 overs - a competitive, yet under-par score that would have had the Panthers licking their lips. It didn’t take long for legendary openers Tom Donnell and Brett Forsyth (35) to take the cranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au

Nathan Lambden steams in from the scoreboard end on Saturday. 174429 fizz out of the contest, with Donnell cracking an early lofted drive straight to the boundary before the pair brought up their customary 50 run partnership in less than an hour. The skipper eventually fell for 56 but it simply didn’t matter with Ed Newman (40) once again showing his abundance of class by playing a crafty knock before LJ Edwards (12 not out) and James Nanopoulos (8 not out) eventually saw the home side to victory in the 32nd over and with only three wickets down. Nathan Lambden (1/36) and Suriaratchie (1/10) were the only two to take wickets for the Swans. “There are some positives - even though

we lost too many early wickets, we managed to score 150 which isn’t good enough, but still we were able to build after losing five wickets, so we can take that away from the game,” Nissanka said. “We still couldn’t convert our starts into big scores, and that’s something we are lacking for any team this can happen, but the good teams overcome these situations - if you score 25 or 30 runs it doesn’t help anyone. “Once you’ve done the hard work, you have to convert them to good scores then that will take us to 200 or 220, so that’s something I want them to analyse and overcome.” Nissanka also said that the lack of runs on

the scoreboard is making it hard for his bowlers to come up with plans to win, but backed his side in to find a way to break out of a slump that threatens to derail its season completely. “They (bowlers) need to improve as well - the situation we have faced so far this season, we have scored three low scores, so when you’re bowling to a small total, the problem is you have to always take wickets, and when you overdo things, it’s not going to help,” he said. “We will learn from these games, and figure out a way to get us back into winning positions.” Round 5 will see the Swans host Geelong at Casey Fields, in what is a winnable game.

Kooweerup star Ben Spicer cracks a straight six as the Demons surged to outright victory over Cardinia. 174436 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS

Bulls are crushed By Russell Bennett Looking back over the WGCA’s Premier era to this point, it almost seems inconceivable that Kooweerup would be in the position to snare an outright win over Cardinia with the two perennial league heavyweights often fighting it out for the premiership. But the Bulls seem a long way off that now after surrendering maximum points to the Demons at E. Gunton Oval on Saturday and sliding to sixth on the ladder with just one win from its first four games. It’s not that Cardinia doesn’t have the talent within its ranks, but the Bulls must rely on each and every one of their first XI players to get their season back on course. After resuming their second innings at 0/38 after 20 overs at the start of day two on Saturday, the Bulls survived just another 23.5 overs before being dismissed for 94. Openers, and not out batsmen overnight, Ben Parrott (28) and Brad Reiner (22) were the only Cardinia batsmen to reach 20 - in their 52-run stand - as former Bulls skipper and now Demons leader Mark Cooper snared a remarkable 6/29 from his 15 overs, while Jess Mathers (4/34) claimed each of the other wickets to fall. The Demons shook their batting order up in their second dig, with Cooper, Mathers and Chris O’Hara not required. They lost six wickets before snaring full points, but the result was never in doubt. Matt Welsh took 3/16 from his nine overs while Dwayne Doig snared 2/33. Separate incidents involving Travis Wheller and Te Ahu Davis weren’t taken any further

by the officiating umpires in the wake of the match. Emerald, meanwhile, was spurred on by a fighting lower-order century from favourite son Clinton Marsh (109) to reach 252 in its chase against Upper Beaconsfield’s 326-run day one total. The Bombers had their backs to the wall from the outset - losing 2/0 - but a host of the visiting batsmen ultimately got starts before Marsh converted his to triple figures. Though current Emerald skipper Mitch Daley hasn’t been at the club all that long, it’s obvious to him just what Marsh means to the playing group. “Marshy is one of the most competitive and passionate blokes I’ve ever played with,” he said. “I think that’s why the boys love playing with him.” At Toomuc Reserve in Pakenham, Tooradin capitalised on its strong opening day’s play by dismissing the Lions for 265 in a touch over 70 overs on day two of their clash. Pleasingly for the Gulls, they managed to snare a host of wickets at crucial times throughout the Pakenham innings just as the Lions’ batsmen seemed to take control. Nic Close (18) and Chris Smith (67) put on 41 for the opening wicket for the Lions, and both showed plenty of positive intent from the outset. Smith, in particular, looked in superb touch before he was ultimately caught for 67 by Aaron Avery off his fellow co-captain Cal O’Hare.

Rob Elston (23), Dom Paynter (39), and Sean Gramc (34) all had the potential to change the course of the game, but each fell just as they seemed set - Elston holing out to 12th man Ricky Holland in the deep off a high full toss from Kade Burns. Though it was the Lions second loss of the season, and they currently sit in unfamiliar territory outside the top four, there was plenty to be optimistic about for Paynter and his men - particularly with the bat. “It was a really good feeling to beat Pakenham on their home deck,” Avery said in the wake of the contest. “We’ve had a really tough time there the last few years so to get one back on them was good. “Sean Gramc and (Troy) McDermott (37 not out) probably had us to be honest. They needed five runs an over with the field spread (and) they were cruising. “Sean Gramc playing the shot he did probably won us the game, really.” In the other game of the round on Saturday, Clyde capitalised on its strong start with the ball to defeat Merinda Park on the first innings. In response to the Cobras’ 109 all out, the Cougars reached 162 just inside 64 overs with Shane Webster starring with his second half-century of the season to date. Sent in for the final 19 overs of the game, the Cobras finished on 2/76 in their second innings with opener Daniel McCalman continuing his impressive start to the season with the willow - with his 30 not out taking his season tally to a Premier-leading 213 runs at an average of 71.
