This year marks the sixth time in the past eight years that the Demons have reached a grand final. They’ve won four of those and could make it five this weekend. “It’s an extraordinary effort, and it’s one we aspire to achieve ourselves,” Anning said. “Dom (Lions skipper Dom Paynter) summed it up this time last year - we’ve always had a high level of respect for them. They’re always great in

also competing for a premiership. And this weekend - on Saturday and Sunday at Denhams Road in Kooweerup - the Lions faithful will turn out in droves to support them. “Knowing Kooweerup’s administration, they’ll leave no stone unturned in showcasing their club and facilities in the best possible way,” Anning said. Play begins at Kooweerup at 1pm on Saturday.

Pakenham will fight tooth and nail with local rival Kooweerup again this week in the ultimate battle for supremacy in the West Gippsland Cricket Association as grand final weekend hits fever pitch across the senior grades. The two powerhouse clubs faced off in last year’s Premier division decider, with Pakenham prevailing in a thriller at home. This time, the game will be

held at the Demons’ den in front of what’s sure to be a bumper crowd of parochial supporters. The respect between the two clubs has always been there, and it’s steeped in history. Pakenham president Phil Anning is a past player-coach at Kooweerup. He respects the Demons, and everything they’ve achieved through their current era of finals dominance, more than anyone.
