Pakenham Cops want recruits Local police will up their presence at Saturday’s Pakenham Show while also joining in on the festivities. Among the rides and stalls at Saturday’s event will be Cardinia police offering a number of demonstrations and the chance to become a police officer. Pakenham police Senior Sergeant Ian Pregnell said the local unit was hoping to attract new members as part of a state-wide recruitment drive. He said police would be at the show to answer any questions people might have about the job, while pointing people to the application process. Also on hand at the show will be the local proactive and highway patrol units.

Show set in motion By Rebecca Skilton After joining the Parklea Pakenham Show four years ago, the Pakenham Library and Pakenham Living and Learning Centre have become vital elements of the annual community event. Now, with the 18 March show right around the corner, the two organisations are preparing to bring family fun and flavours of the world to P.B Ronald Reserve. “The Pakenham Library and the Living and Learning Centre hopped on board without any hesitation to support the show,” Pakenham Show sponsorship and attraction co-ordinator Janette Young explained. “With the new venue - moving from the old racecourse - came massive changes for the show, and without their strong support it would have been harder.” Planning for the day is library branch co-ordinator, Melissa Martin, and Living and Learning Centre manager, Miriam Cadwallader. The duo are pleased to be involved with the long running show, and are set to bring a range of activities to the event. “Casey Cardinia Libraries are delighted to be involved in the Pakenham Show,” Melissa said. “Partnering with the show is a great way for the libraries to connect with our community and show how our libraries are full of creative community spaces.” Throughout show day, the artis-

Rebecca Mitchem, Sheryl Matwijkiw, Miriam Cadwallader, Jessica Catoni, Linda Penman and Melissa Martin of the Pakenham Library and Living and Learning Centre. tic spaces of the library will be on full display, with showgoers invited to take part in a number of art and craft activities available between 9am and 4pm. “Kids can have their face painted, make a Cat in a Hat bookmark and get their very own temporary tattoo,“ Melissa explained. “Families and kids can also grab a quick snap at our farming photo prop station to capture the moment.” Similarly, the living and learning centre will be joining in on the celebrations, inviting showgoers to experience multiculturalism at its finest.

“We do lots of multicultural things,” Miriam explained. “We’ve got lots of different types of food. We will have New Zealand Hangi and some Thai food that will be happening as well. We’ve also got a Filipino lady coming down to do a Filipino barbecue. It will all be in the community garden area, and we’ll have seating available.” With additional activities such as clay sculpture demonstrations, and Pilates and strength training demonstrations on display, the living and learning centre wishes to remind showgoers that the Pakenham community is ‘about inclusiveness,

respect and sense of belonging for everyone.’ “There are lots of different people who are migrating and they’re relocating in Pakenham. It’s about making sure people understand they’re just like us,” Miriam said. “We all live as one, it’s just about education.” The living and learning centre will open their doors at 10am, with the final demonstration appearing in the centre’s deck area at 2.45pm. Both the library and the living and learning centre can be found on Henry Street, Pakenham.

Meaghan’s passion shows By Rebecca Skilton The 2017 Parklea Pakenham Show will provide the perfect opportunity for members of the public to present their talents and hobbies to the world. However, for 19-year-old Pakenham resident, Meaghan Venables, not only is the annual event a chance to showcase her talents in fashion, but it’s an opportunity to give back to her local show society and community. “This is my third year helping at the Pakenham Show. The first year I was judging the dog high jump, and the second year I was Junior Ambassador,” Meaghan said. “Originally I was a Scout ... we had a stall at Pakenham Show nearly every year, which sparked me to do a bit more than show up with a sausage sizzle ... I think it’s my duty to give back to the Show, give thanks, and to help run it a bit better.” Prevailing for over 100 years, the Pakenham Show, as stated by their show committee, upholds the same purpose it did over a century ago: “to offer the local community the opportunity to showcase their produce and homewares and compete against other like-minded people.” With her passion for fashion and drive to give back to her community, it is these values that Meaghan plans to uphold through her fashion section for the Show, Make and Wear; a section of which she encourages anyone of any textile experience to become involved with. “I’ve developed a new section called ‘make and wear,” Meaghan said.

Young Pakenham designer Meaghan Venables will be judging this year's Parklea Pakenham Show's Make and Wear section. “Basically, it’s a section for the fashionistas of the community to showcase their abilities and their style ... it’s for all ages and capabilities. I’ll be judging the section, (but) I’m not a harsh judge!” “There are three sections in Make and Wear,” Meaghan explained. “Garments, which are things like dresses and coats and everyday wear; Accessories, which include handbags, backpacks, clutches and even shoes, and then there’s the Millinery section which is fantastic, because it shows a

different side of fashion that people don’t know much about, like hats and nice headpieces.” Joining Meaghan in the judging ring for the day will be Jen Robinson, representing competition sponsor, Pakenham Sewing Connection. While Meaghan admits Jen’s presence will allow for some good-fashioned banter on the judging stage, it won’t be all business for the 19-yearold, with a selection of her own designs entered into the show’s events. “I have garments entered into the

show,” Meaghan said. “I have a side business called Cherubs Collection and I make children’s jackets and vests by up-cycling and using grandma’s old blankets. Some of them will be entered ... I don’t mind about prizes though, it’s just about getting my stuff out there.” Having completed her course in applied fashion design and technology at Kangan Institute, Meaghan admits that her love of fashion began at a young age, developing from her love of the theatrical arts - the same love that con-

tinues to influence the direction of her designs and goals. “I danced pretty much my whole life and have been to the ballet and I love theattre,” Meaghan explained. “I think it was my passion for theatre that drove me into fashion, creating costumes and things like that ... I want to end up working for the Australian Ballet or somewhere in the West End in London.” “(But at the moment) I’m just trying to make a name for myself. I’ve sold a few pieces, so that’s probably the greatest fashion achievement to date.” However, while Meaghan’s goals are set high, for the moment she remains grounded; the 2017 Parklea Pakenham Show - an event she looks forward to yearly, the Pakenham community an enticing factor for the young fashionista. “I just love the community involvement at the show, the smiling faces of all the locals,” Meaghan said. “They make me come back every year.” The Parklea Pakenham Show will take place at PB Ronald Reserve in Pakenham on Saturday 18 March, with free entry available to spectators. Bollywood and more at show By Rebecca Skilton Having found few opportunities to immerse herself within Indian culture throughout the south eastern suburbs of Melbourne, mother of two, Aanchal Meshram has worked tirelessly to bring Indian culture to both the Casey and Cardinia region. Now, a year after its birth, the Indian Association Casey Cardinia spearheaded by Aanchal is preparing for its first appearance at the 2017 Parklea Pakenham Show. “We will be doing Bollywood dance workshops, and there will be a food store (at the show),” president of the Indian Association Casey Cardinia, Aanchal explained. “People can come in, and we’ll show them some moves. We are planning to do the workshop every half an hour to build momentum in the crowd.” For Aanchal and the Indian Association Casey Cardinia, the introduction of their organisation to the Pakenham show is a welcome event; their presence at the annual show provides the opportunity to create a stronger standing within the community. “We haven’t been to a Pakenham show before, so we don’t know how we’re going to fit in,” Aanchal admitted. “But we are excited because it’s a bigger platform that we can show what Indian culture is all about.” “The Pakenham Show gives us an opportunity to relate to the broader community and not just Indians,” Aanchal said. “Our (organisation) started by bringing all Indians together, and then

Mayur Meshram, Harpreet Kandra, Parklea Pakenham and District Agricultural and Horticultural Show president Geoff Young, Brijal Parikh, Aanchal Meshram, Aura, Mayush and Pviyansh. to start relating to other groups and to promote multiculturalism on a higher level... (Because) when you understand the cultural background of people and what their culture is about, it becomes much easier to relate and understand people.” Noticing a lack of Indian festivals

within the region, Aanchal’s endeavor to promote the Indian culture to both shires came after the birth of her second child. Aware of the possibility her children could grow up without knowing their roots, Aanchal set out to create an alternative path to the one they were

set to travel. “The Indian Association Casey Cardinia started last year because we wanted to bring multicultural living in Cardinia and Casey together,” Aanchal explained. “A lot of Indian festivals happen in the west (of Melbourne) but nothing

happens in south east ... that was the biggest challenge (because) travelling over one hour to the west doesn’t fit everyone’s schedules.” “Our main idea was to showcase Indian festivities to the communities and our own kids because they had nowhere to go and see our culture,” Aanchal said. “Our kids haven’t seen what happens in India. This is the best we can provide ... I want them to have a taste of everything.” While support from local Indian groups such as the Sikh Temple has helped to expand the Indian Association Casey Cardinia, Aanchal admits the group hasn’t been without hard times. She elects to view troubles faced as mere stepping stones in the organisation’s overall journey. “We have been discouraged quite a few times ... there are challenges,” Aanchal admitted. “Sometimes people didn’t turn out to events, but it’s a stepping stone and slowly people will get to know us.” “When you have a good team like ours, we support each other and things become easier,” Aanchal explained. “I want (my kids) to learn we can do what we wish to and if we set our minds there’s nothing that stops us.” The Parklea Pakenham Show will take place at P.B Ronald Reserve in Pakenham on Saturday 18 March. We need to plan ahead for aviation to avoid being blind-sided as Victoria grows… Spokesperson for Planning Minister Richard Wynne

Cool your jets By Bonny Burrows The State Government will not purchase land in Kooweerup for a third Melbourne airport, contrary to media reports. It was reported across several metropolitan news publications on Tuesday that the government had pledged to buy land for a new airport, likely to cost $5 billion, in the next five years. It was also speculated air services in the South East would begin by 2030, with the airport cited as “a key feature” of the government’s Plan Melbourne 2017-’50. However, the State Government said it had made no such commitment. A spokesperson for Planning Minister Richard Wynne said Plan Melbourne was a blueprint

for population growth, and included “early planning works” for a third airport in the event one was needed in the future. Star News understands a South-East airport has been on the state’s radar since 2002, but development would only occur if warranted by demand. It is also understood any land for a potential airport would not be purchased by the government or through state funding, but rather through the private sector. However, Plan Melbourne does recommend the government preserves the future option of another airport through “incorporating planning protection for flight paths and noise contours, and the alignment for a connection to the rail

line at Clyde”. The government spokesperson said the project was not yet needed, but signalled planning was on the cards. “Melbourne Airport and Avalon Airport still have capacity to take more flights, but nevertheless we won’t make the same mistakes Sydney has made,” the spokesperson said. “We need to plan ahead for aviation to avoid being blind-sided as Victoria grows.” Cardinia Shire Mayor Brett Owen said council welcomed a State Government commitment to identify and select a suitable south east region location for an airport. “Our region will continue to experience significant growth over the coming years, and SEM (South East Melbourne Group of Councils)

believes the development and operation of an airport would be a major economic and employment driver for our communities,” councillor Owen said. City of Casey Mayor Sam Aziz said there had been discussion about a possible airport in the Casey-Cardinia region for more than 40 years. “There would clearly be economic benefits to the Casey-Cardinia region by the establishment of the proposed airport,” councillor Aziz said. “Not only would it be convenient for residents, but it will also generate local jobs and investment in the region.” Cr Aziz said the City of Casey looked forward to more information about the proposal from the State Government in the future.

And this weekend - on Saturday and Sunday at Denhams Road in Kooweerup - the Lions faithful will turn out in droves to support them. “Knowing Kooweerup’s administration, they’ll leave no stone unturned in showcasing their club and facilities in the best possible way,” Anning said. Play begins at Kooweerup at 1pm on Saturday.

Pakenham will fight tooth and nail with local rival Kooweerup again this week in the ultimate battle for supremacy in the West Gippsland Cricket Association as grand final weekend hits fever pitch across the senior grades. The two powerhouse clubs faced off in last year’s Premier division decider, with Pakenham prevailing in a thriller at home. This time, the game will be

held at the Demons’ den in front of what’s sure to be a bumper crowd of parochial supporters. The respect between the two clubs has always been there, and it’s steeped in history. Pakenham president Phil Anning is a past player-coach at Kooweerup. He respects the Demons, and everything they’ve achieved through their current era of finals dominance, more than anyone.

Arrests in anti-bikie raids By Cam Lucadou-Wells A 28-year-old Beaconsfield man and a 31-year-old Pakenham woman were arrested in a series of early-morning police raids on 14 March, which saw senior members of the Comancheros Motorcycle Club arrested. Assistant Commissioner Steve Fontana said that the OMCGs “don’t stop” despite the arrest of “key players”. “They seem to be able to recruit and continue their activity, but we’ll continue to pursue them,” he said. Sixteen men and women had been charged as a result of the raids, including a 35-year-old Lyndhurst man who is facing 15 charges including trafficking a large commercial quantity of meth, inciting another to recklessly endanger life, conspiracy to commit criminal damage by fire and possessing an unregistered handgun. A 31-year-old Cranbourne North man was charged with offences including aggravated burglary, criminal damage by fire, and kidnapping. The pair were remanded and were due to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court yesterday, 15 March. Three other arrested people were expected to be charged on summons. Twenty-five homes, a business and a factory were raided in suburbs across Melbourne including Berwick, Narre Warren, Cranbourne, Cranbourne North, Cranbourne West, Dandenong South, Beaconsfield, Keysborough, Clyde North, Lysterfield South and Eumemmerring. Police said they seized several items including vehicles, a firearm, jewellery, cash as well as cocaine, methylamphetamine, GHB, cannabis, ecstasy and steroids. Police, including officers from the

Dust to dust By Cam Lucadou-Wells Two industrial businesses on O’Grady Road, Hallam, which have been found to be responsible for releasing high levels of dust and grit, are set to be issued with pollution abatement notices by the state’s environmental watchdog. Environment Protection Authority southern metro manager Marleen Mathias said dust had been observed leaving the two premises during a 10 March inspection, despite the sites “actively using dust suppression vehicles”. The pollution abatement notices will require further dust controls to ensure no impact on the “local environment” or the businesses face potential fines up to $777,300, Ms Mathias said. A third business in the area with “dust-generating” activity passed inspection. Several neighbouring Hallam businesses and Hampton Park residents had pointed the finger at the road’s soil and mulch yards, blaming the businesses for health afflictions and thick coatings of silt on their decks, paths, windowsills and vehicles. Ms Mathias said recent EPA monitoring detected elevated dust levels in the surrounding industrial area but not at neighbouring residences. “Dust levels at the residential properties would likely fluctuate at times of differing weather conditions,” she said. Testing showed the councilmaintained gravel road was

Dust swirls around the O'Grady Road soilworks on 21 November 2016. “not likely to be a significant contributor” to the sampled sites’ dust impacts, Ms Mathias said. A long-suffering Hampton Park resident said the results confirmed the “grit” was coming from the compost, mulch and soil works businesses and not the gravel road. He and his family are among several complainants about 400 metres south who had blamed asthma, wheezing, severe skin hives, and eye irritations on the dust swirling from the soil yards. He is planning to build a $30,000 enclosed pergola to block out the dust that is blown onto his property with hot northerlies. “They confirmed it’s grit and not just ordinary dust, which is what we all argued several years ago. “I really hope there’s a solution.” Meanwhile, dust-plagued

business-owner Paul McBeth said in “the most incredible co-incidence” the council gave the road “the most intensive conditioning I’ve known” on 10 March just days ahead of an anticipated EPA site visit. He had told Star News recently that staff at his business, Marvel Packers, had been choking on dust clouds kicked up by a heavy stream of trucks on O’Grady Road. “The road was teeming with graders, tip trucks and specialised dust-suppressant trucks all morning which has completely transformed the road - for now. “By carrying out these works directly before the EPAs assessment the council is making a mockery of the whole matter.” Casey city presentation manager David Richardson said the council was unaware of the timing of the EPA planning further tests at the road. He said the treatment was part of routine maintenance.

women. “One of the things we observe is when you have tertiary educated women and they are employed in a position that doesn’t need that education; there is a flow on effect,” she said. “It affects others that would be applying for those jobs, then they have to take a job that is less secure, with less pay.” There are many factors that contribute to the gap in job access and income for men and women in the Casey and surrounding regions, but Ms Pike said there were a few things that made a big difference. “A big part of it is about knowledge intensive industries not being in those areas,” she said. “A more diverse array employment opportunity would definitely help.” “When we talk about this, we have to talk about having access to those jobs through public transport.” “If it only takes you half an hour to travel to the CBD when there are no jobs locally, there are no issues, but in these growth areas the travel time is really substantial trying to get to the knowledge clusters.” SGS will continue to analyse employment data to get a greater understanding of productivity in Melbourne growth areas in the coming months.

12342411-10-17

Women armed with a university degree in the South-East are at a severe disadvantage in finding full-time employment compared to men in the region. The data used for the research focused on tertiaryeducated people in full-time employment, and showed that women in Melbourne’s growth areas were both paid less and have less full-time employment than men. The preliminary research undertaken by planning and economics firm SGS Economics and Planning was released on International Women’s Day Wednesday 8 March. Senior Consultant for SGS Lucinda Pike said the research came about when the firm realised there was a gap to fill in productivity data. “We were discussing International Women’s Day in the office, and we do a lot of work on productivity, and we have found there is not much data looking at the gender gap and difference in productivity,” Ms Pike said. “We have this sense of how it works across the board, but there is very little that looks at the difference between genders.” What the researchers found was that women in growth areas are much more adversely affected by being further away from the knowledge centres of

the city and inner suburbs. Only 55 - 65 per cent of tertiary-educated women were working full time, earning over $1000 per week in Casey, compared to 78-85 per cent of their male counterparts. “This is a very significant difference between men and women earning a thousand dollars a week,” Ms Pike said. “While we are only looking at the broad overview of tertiary educated and full time employed people, it is a staggering difference.” “We were surprised by this and how it is particularly pronounced in the growth corridors and outer parts of Melbourne.” The gap between the genders in the South-East Region doesn’t only affect income with jobs requiring a university degree being disproportionately being held by men. Over 30 per cent of women who had a university degree in both Casey and Dandenong were working in jobs that did not require that level of education. “Women are able to work in jobs that require the education but are not being employed in those roles in growth areas,” Ms Pike said. Ms Pike said the consequences affect the wider community and not just those with a university degree looking for work and can further entrench employment inequality for

Letters Reports are wrong The newspapers have reported an incident which occurred outside Casey council on Tuesday night. I can confirm I witnessed part of the incident, however the newspaper reports of what I saw have the story incorrect. It’s disappointing to see these comments. Given the sensitivity of the matter I will be making no further comment. Rex Flannery, Councillor for the Springfield Ward.

I welcome an investigation into the alleged abuse committed by Steve Beardon. If the allegations are true then may he receive the appropriate justice from the relevant authorities. If Mr Beardon did indeed do this then he deserves what’s coming regardless of the validity of his points. On one point I tend to agree with him. Cr Crestani is an active and senior member within the RUAP. The RUAP shares the same address as Catch the Fire ministries in Hallam and has the same leader, Danny Nalliah. Just recently (January 2017), Catch the Fire was stripped of its charitable status by the Australian Government after it was found to be raising funds for Rise Up Australia. Hence Cr Beardon’s statement that: “I can surmise it’s to do with religious tendencies after Casey councillor Rosalie Crestani raising an urgent motion for the council to hold discussions with the Israeli city Ofakim for a possible sister-city relationship” being ruled out of order on “relevance and fact” by Cr Aziz seems peculiar to me. RUAP policy towards Israel is being enacted by Cr Crestani under the guise of a sister city agreement. Why it is a matter of urgent business is beyond me. Nevertheless the argument to support such an arrangement is weak at best. Australia has globally recognised bodies and authorities in the field of agriculture and farming economics, eg ANU and AARES. “Australian farmers are among the most efficient and best practice operators on the planet,” DFAT and OECD reports claim. Surely Cr Crestani should be focusing her talents and resources to local community issues such as roads, rates, rubbish, respect and reserves before embarking on grandiose global arrangements that provide little benefit for those within our own local community. Leave these kinds of relationship arrangements to the Federal Government. And before I am accused of being an antisemite, let me add that as a Christian I am committed to supporting Israel and its people. This commitment is personal (like my faith). It does not mean that I will embrace the RUAP Israel policy and seek to have it introduced in my place of employ. Chris Sargeant, Endeavour Hills.

Too big to develop We write to you with regards to what we see is an over-sized development proposed by a developer trying to maximise a project with little or no consideration for the residents who currently live in this court. This seven-unit development provides for three of the units each having four bedrooms while the other four units each have three

Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS bedrooms with provision for two car parks only per unit. As you would know it is not unusual to have your siblings living with their parents until their late thirties nowadays and the fact that this development only provides for 14 car spaces, we think Casey planning should have a closer look at what they’re about to approve. While we understand the developer only needs to provide 14 spaces, we believe allowing a development of this size to proceed in the bottom of a court without sufficient future car parking spaces onsite is ridiculous. With only 14 car spaces available where do you think their siblings will park their cars when you consider there could be a need for an additional seven to 14 spaces in reality. This is where we as residents have grave concerns because we reside within the immediate area at the bottom of the court and see the problems that arise from time to time We have experienced times when too many cars have been parked within the bowl of the court with no thought, parking over driveways, parking all over the nature strips and blocking rubbish trucks and other service suppliers. The problem as we see it is simple. If the developer wants to maximise the site he should be instructed to provide the additional car park spaces on his site by either deleting some of the units he’s proposing or providing a car park area underground as they do in and around the Melbourne suburbs. If Casey planning don’t take a stance on over development we as residents will have

Ray’s

say

to endure the arguments and angst going on for years to come. As a rate payer and a resident of Berwick I would like to think the resident would come before overzealous developers. Bruce Hamilton, Berwick.

Bad taste Please read the following research into MSG, a flavour enhancer, and its deleterious effects on the human body. I urge Casey Council to begin a programme of educating the rate payers of Casey on the deleterious effects of consuming MSG laced food and eventually ban the use of MSG in consumer food outlets within the boundary of the region of Casey Council. Let us be the first local council to ban the use of MSG as a flavour enhancer in foods. Penalties enforced on producers of foods who use MSG could be the next step in protecting the residents of Casey. I believe MSG is harmful. I don’t eat from restaurants if I know that the food is laced with MSG. I ask the restaurant owner in order to protect myself because I can taste when the flavour enhancer is used and I experience an abnormal reaction to MSG. I urge Casey Council to be the leader in eradicating MSG from food sold in the region of Casey Council. Milroy Martyn, Endeavour Hills.

‘Simple fix’ to pool plea By Bonny Burrows

Vishal, Jigmesh, Sejal and Riddhi. 165731

Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS

Lovely festival of colour By Bonny Burrows The Pakenham community embraced Hindu culture at the weekend’s Holi festival. Also known as the Festival of Colours or the Festival of Love, brightly coloured powders were through in the air and smeared on faces at PB Ronald Park to celebrate the arrival of spring in the Northern Hemisphere. The ancient religious festival originated in India, but is not celebrated across the globe. Pakenham event organiser Aanchal Meshram estimated about 250 people of all backgrounds attended the local celebration, which also featured a mass water fight, live DJ and plenty of food. She said this far exceeded any expectations. “We had a very positive response from the community who said we should keep doing the event,” she said. “We feel it’s going to be much bigger next year.”

It was sold as a retirement home with “resort style” facilities, but residents of Pakenham’s Main Street Village aren’t lounging around the pool. Instead, they’re lobbying for what they describe as a “simple fix” to alleged design faults. A petition signed by 52 residents details problems with the facility’s indoor pool, including railing which doesn’t go all the way into the water and a bottom step they say is too high from the ground. The heated pool’s water is ironically too cold, they argue, deterring people away from water aerobics classes and rehabilitation exercises. One resident, Brigid Sinclair, said the facility’s pool was one of the main reasons she and husband Laszlo chose to call Main Street home. The retiree has a number of injuries which benefit from water rehabilitation; however, she said the cool temperature and unsafe railing meant she was unable to use the pool. “My water exercises strengthen my muscles. It’s good for someone who is disabled to use the water, but I can’t; it’s too cold so my muscles clamp up,” Ms Sinclair said. “There’s a perfectly good

Main Street Village is spruiked for its "resort style" facilities. pool there, but I can’t use it.” The Sinclairs said they had written a letter to village management before Christmas seeking an extension of the railing and the pool’s temperature to be raised to about 33 degrees Celsius but had not received a response. They believe it’s not a big ask- all residents who signed the petition were happy to pay for the works or be charged a pool entry fee to cover expenses. “If it comes to that, we’re prepared to pay for the peace and quiet. We just want to go about our day and be able to use

the pool,” Mr Sinclair said. Mr Sinclair said the nearby Cardinia Waters Retirement Village, also operated by Retirement Communities Australia, had railing all the way down to the water so the change was possible. “If they can have railing all the way into the water there, why can’t we here?” he said. “In my opinion, there is a simple solution and I just hope they do it. It’s the right thing to do.” Main Street Village owner Retirement Communities Australia did not respond to questions from the Gazette.

OFFICER

LIVE THE LIFE OF LUXURY After a successful two-year development period, Lifestyle Officer is now selling its last available new low-maintenance homes. Now is the time for those who are over 50, working, semi-retired or retired and love to live a life of luxury in Officer to take action. Now 12 months since the grand opening, Lifestyle Officer has developed a relaxed and friendly culture with plenty of social and recreational activities on offer.

From Friday night Happy Hour in the resort-style Clubhouse to the friendly competition on the bowling green, Lifestyle Officer gives homeowners many opportunities to get as active and social as they like. For those who prefer a quieter retreat without the hassle of a garden or even a home base to leave behind securely while travelling, Lifestyle Officer’s remaining new homes offer both convenient options. The on-site gardener ensures the fully

landscaped front gardens stay in shape all year while those who leave to go travelling know their home stays secure under the watch of the onsite Community Managers. Lifestyle Communities Sales Manager Richard Parker said: “We have a good range of homes still available, ranging from one-bedroom homes to those with two bedrooms plus a study. “We’re envisioning the community being sold out in the next three months given we keep seeing unprecedented levels

of inquiry.” A popular move for people wishing to live close to the grandkids in Melbourne’s booming outer southeast, Lifestyle Officer helps the over-50s stay close to family while still maintaining an active, independent life. Lifestyle Officer is at 114 Rix Road, Officer. Call 1300 50 55 60 to book an informative, no-pressure appointment with a sales consultant.

Stamp duty and first home buyers. Great news for first home buyers in Victoria. As from the 1st of July, 2017, the state government has announced that first home buyers will not be charged stamp duty on the purchase of a home, up to the value of $600,000. So what does this mean? I have listed some examples below of the saving you will make on the purchase of an established home. On a purchase price of $550,000, you will save paying an extra $28,070 in stamp duty. On a purchase price of $350,000, you will save paying an extra $16,070 in stamp duty. These are significant savings and I am sure this will be welcomed by the market. There could be a sting in the tail however. Experience has shown us that prices could easily rise by the amount of these savings, should many first home buyers hit the market to purchase at the same time. If this happens, the net saving to the purchaser will be zero. Ideally, this will give first home buyers a better chance to compete with investors and other buyers, who may have access to more money. Currently, O’Brien Real Estate Pakenham has dozens of house and land packages, which are ideally suited to first home buyers, that you can register for now, which will see you get the stamp duty concessions and first home buyers grant, if applicable. These should be completed later this year and into next year.

Secure something at today’s prices and pay for it next year, in a market that is rising at a rate that’s taking most by surprise. For more details, please call Rod Capuano on 5940 4044.

ents suggested a Purple Round at basketball and having her team all decked out in purple,” Lisa said. “That’s how it started.” Ava’s teammates, coaches, and even opposition teams in the Casey Basketball Association - in addition to her family and friends - have decided to support her fundraising efforts by holding the Purple Round on 18 March. They’ll be selling merchandise and holding competitions, holding purple face painting stalls, and the coaches will be wearing purple wigs all day. The Timbarra, Beaconhills and Casey basketball stadiums will be taking part on the day. Ava was never going to be a basketballer - she was going to be a dancer, until she fell in love with the game watching her sister playing it. “I think it’s great that she chose basketball because it’s one big community,” Lisa said. “Both her clubs - the Berwick Panthers and Casey Cavaliers - have really got on board.” To this stage, Ava and her ‘Purple Army’ have sold close to more than $4000 worth of merchandise to raise money for the Epilepsy Foundation of Victoria, and they’ve also registered the Purple Round with the nationwide Epilepsy Action Australia. “There are a few associations that support epilepsy but we chose the foundation because it’s a

Brothers impress at Moomba By Russell Bennett Pakenham waterskiing dynamos Jack and Bailey Christie cut a swathe through Melbourne’s famous Yarra River as part of the 2017 Moomba Masters competition. And, once again, the brothers were hugely impressive with 16-year-old Jack finishing as the third highest-placed Aussie in the Open Men’s slalom, and 14-year-old Bailey becoming the only Aussie to make the Open Men’s semi-finals in this year’s trick competition. These boys have taken sibling rivalry to a whole new stratosphere. Every time Jack breaks a state or national record, he’s just setting a mark for Bailey to try and better in the years to come. But they’re also each other’s biggest supporters - constantly offering advice and encouragement riverside.

Bailey Christie is achieving remarkable things on waterskiing's international stage. Picture: FACEBOOK Jack is currently the world’s second ranked Under 17 slalom skiier, and wants to top the rankings in his age group. “I’ve got to make it harder for Bailey!” he said with a grin. Bailey is chasing Jack’s Under 14 record and will continue to - relentlessly.

But he’ll always continue to get nervous for his big brother just before an event. He can’t help it. Both of them dominated the Victorian State titles recently Jack won gold in the Under 17s slalom, trick, jump, and overall while Bailey did the exact same thing in the Under 14s.

not-for-profit and, from day one, they’re been all about advocacy and education and training,” Lisa said. “When Ava was first diagnosed, they’re the ones who provided her with a case worker, who got us on to all the resources that were available. “She has emergency medication that she has to be given to stop her seizures so anyone looking after her needs to be trained in administering that medication.

“The Epilepsy Foundation have provided a nurse to come out to her school and also to come out to our family, some of our friends, and some of our basketball parents. “With that training it means that on the weekends when the girls all play their games and then have a sleepover, Ava can go. She’s missed out in the past because she can’t go if the parents don’t know how to look after a seizure.” The Becks have been overwhelmed by the support they’ve received from their friends, family, and wider community. There’s a mighty purple army mobilising behind 10-year-old Casey Cavaliers basketballer, Ava Beck. The Berwick Primary School student is showing the world that living with epilepsy won’t hold her back, and that what she lacks in physical stature she makes up for tenfold in sheer grit, toughness and a determination to succeed. Ava was told she had epilepsy when she was just nine and since then has had many seizures, some prolonged. The first of those came after a representative basketball tryout, as her mum Lisa explains. “She had quite a few seizures - we didn’t know what was going on - and then she was diagnosed with epilepsy,” she said. “All throughout last year she had a really difficult time. “She was in and out of hospital a lot - and missed a lot of school - but she continued playing basketball, both domestic and representative." Lisa said that apart from close friends and family, Ava’s team mates were the first people she told about her diagnosis. Since then, they’ve rallied around her both on the court and off. “When she was sick and in and out of hospital, all her teammates were always coming to visit her and they started wearing purple,” Lisa explained. Purple Day - on 26 March - is a global initiative dedicated to raising epilepsy awareness. It was founded in 2008 by a then nine-year-old - Cassidy Megan of Nova Scotia in Canada. Motivated by her own struggles with epilepsy, Cassidy started Purple Day in an effort to get people talking about the condition and to let those impacted by seizures know they’re not alone. Now Ava - who plays Under 12s for the Berwick Panthers and Cavaliers, and also Under 14s for the Panthers - is pushing forward with the cause at a local level. It was just a month ago that she decided she wanted to do something for Purple Day. She could have easily chosen to fight her battle privately with her family, but instead she bravely stepped out into the public arena in a bid to help others in a similar position - just like Cassidy of Nova Scotia. “We thought we’d just buy a couple of T-shirts and wear purple on the day but a couple of the par-

Title hinges on three men By David Nagel The unwavering, unshakable belief of three men will be put to the ultimate test when Kooweerup and Pakenham lock horns in this weekend’s WGCA Premier Division grand final at Denham’s Road. The commitment and dedication of Kooweerup captain-coach Mark Cooper collides head first with Pakenham’s resolute skipper Dom Paynter, and its unyielding coach Rob Elston, in a battle of the three best leaders in the game. The Demons and Lions are dripping with talent all the way down their lists, there’s no doubt about that, but these three men encapsulate the saying “When the going gets tough, the tough get going.” Cooper stood out like a beacon against his former club Cardinia (152) last week scoring a magnificent 141 not out to lead his Demons (6/249cc) to an emphatic advance to the grand final. And it was the brilliant 117-run partnership of Paynter (87) and Elston (45) that steered the Lions (9/202) out of the mire at 5/58, eventually winning a thriller against Tooradin (199). So what makes these blokes so special? It’s no coincidence that when all three combined for this year’s Country Week campaign, the WGCA Warriors came out on top, winning division three. Cooper the ultimate preparer, skipping rope in the carpark prior to games, Paynter and Elston the best onfield organisers in the business. Cooper leads all-comers this season, scoring a mammoth 792 runs at the imperious average of 79.2. Paynter (426 at 38.7) and Elston (351 at 39) combined can’t match that tally, but it’s when they do their busi-

ness that counts. Quite simply, the Lions wouldn’t be in this position of going for backto-back titles if it wasn’t for Elston. Chasing 217 in last year’s grand final against the Demons, the Lions were 6/125 when he walked -or limped- to the crease. Under the ultimate pressure he shared a small partnership with Sean Gramc before crowning the Lions as West Gippsland champions with an unbeaten 72-run stand with Ben Shipperd. He just would not be beaten.

And that’s the tantalising factor that makes this grand final so appealing. The Demons, they have weatherbeaten heroes who have been through the wringer a million times, but still maintain their gloss. Loyal stalwarts like Matt Davey, Chris O’Hara, and the Bright-brothers -Chris, John, Matt and Paul- have seen it all before winning multiple premierships at the club. Cooper, as you would expect, is fully respectful of this weekend’s opponent.

“History says these two clubs are really good rivals, and they’ve matched up well over a lot of years,” he said. “We respect them hugely, and they’re the reigning premiers for a reason. Both on and off their field, they’re a very strong club and they’re led really well as a unit by Dom (Paynter), Rob (Elston), and (club president) Phil Anning. “They’ve also got a lot of local boys in their side, and so do we.” Paynter said this could be his side’s

Demons fight back under pressure By Nick Creely AFLW REVIEW ROUND 6 ADELAIDE v MELBOURNE Melbourne has kept their grand final hopes alive for another week, surviving a late scare to defeat second-placed Adelaide in Darwin on Saturday night. Needing a win to stay in the race for a grand final appearance, the Demons looked nervous early, with the Crows able to utilise the slippery and humid conditions to take a 13-point lead into the first-break. But through some inspiration by skipper Daisy Pearce (20 disposals, 1 goal), the Dees sprang to life, dominating the next two-quarters. As Pearce lifted, so did her teammates around her, with Karen Paxman, Sarah Lampard and co starting to get some outside footy, with the Crows unable to keep up when the Dees got the ball on their terms. But with minutes to play, the Dees looked home, but last-gasp goals to Kellie Gibson and Sarah Perkins scared the life out of the demon camp, before the visitors were able to ice the clock, and more importantly keep their season alive. Demons coach Mick Stinear was full of praise for his side’s composure under pressure, and praised his skipper for lifting when it mattered. “The girls were composed, and had a thirst for hard-work - the girls did a great job at the end with repeat stoppages and were able to kill the clock,” he explained. “There was youth and experience in our defence and they were excellent - they played with a lot of heart. “Our leaders had a good honest discussion this week and spoke about how to change things, nothing drastic but just little things like focus and application.

Daisy Pearce, pictured here in Round 3, was stellar for her side on Saturday night. 165088 Picture: AFL MEDIA “Adelaide got the better of us early, but then Daisy our captain drove our legs and lead the way - Daisy has proven herself for a number of years, and she’s been under pressure but she’s extraordinary on and off-field - the best thing about her is her ability to educate. “Everyone contributed to be honest- it was a good team effort.” The win, which seems the Demons breathing down the neck of the Crows, leaves next week’s clash against Fremantle all the most important. “We just need to win next week and play fourquarters, and we’ll see where it takes us,” Stinear said. “A win on the road is very important for us -

for a young group to experience it is great - we will keep going about our business and see how we go.” The Demons host Fremantle at Casey Fields on Saturday, with a win leaving them in second-spot before the Crows play Collingwood the next day. greatest challenge. “They’re always capable of playing great cricket when it matters most,” he said. “And Coops - his is a real thinking man’s game. He’s in the action all day. “I think this is a harder challenge for us this year (than last) because this is the one currently before us. I’m sure we’re not the same challenge for them either. Subaru is a driver’s treat By Alistair Kennedy We seem to spend much of our road testing time behind the wheels of SUVs nowadays. As much as we appreciate the functionality and convenience of these vehicles they do fall down in one respect … they’re not a lot of fun to drive. So we’ve given ourselves a treat with this week’s road test, the Subaru BRZ, a delightful little 2.0-litre twodoor coupe with six-speed manual transmission. Subaru BRZ has been on sale in Australia since 2012 although it didn’t hit the dealers’ showroom floors until 2014 with supply restrictions seeing them sold exclusively over the internet in that interim period. The BRZ is built as a joint venture with Toyota, Subaru’s part-owner, and it competes directly against its nearidentical twin, the Toyota 86. The division of labour between the two companies makes sense with Toyota looking after the product planning and styling while Subaru is in charge of its engineering development and manufacture, the latter at Subaru’s Ota plant in Japan. The latest BRZ was released in late 2016 with some minor design tweaks, extra engine outputs and revised suspension tuning. New exterior features include LED headlights and taillights, new

10-spoke, 17-inch alloy wheels, and a wider and lower bumper design. Inside there’s optional red stitching and BRZ embossing on the front seats, enhanced instrument gauges and a new steering wheel. Topping of the package are price reductions with the manual BRZ now selling for $32,990 and the automatic for $34,990, down by $1230 and $1735 respectively on the preceding model. The 2012 model sold for $37,150 (manual) and $39,730 (automatic). The BRZ certainly looks the part with its wide and low stance, short overhangs and flared wheel arches. The front features a large, hexagonal grille with sweeping headlights and the rear is tall and square with an additional brake light positioned between twin large tail pipes. The cabin features a roofline in keeping with the car’s low profile and although it’s necessary to hunker down into the driver’s seat once settled in the seat is firm but comfortable and there’s plenty of leg and headroom. Although technically a four-seater, the two rear seats are only there for emergency use and not for long-distance trips. At 218 litres the boot is relatively small although the rear seatbacks do fold flat for extra storage space. Surprisingly for a car where space is at a premium, BRZ comes with a

Subaru BRZ is a real head-turner. full-size spare wheel. Power for the BRZ comes from a 2.0-litre turbocharged horizontally-opposed petrol engine that generates 152 kW of power at 7000 rpm and 212 Nm of torque at 6400 revs (147 kW and 205 Nm with the auto). The engine also sounds great with the characteristic throaty sound of the Subaru ‘boxer’ engine. With our fun focus we made sure that our test car had the six-speed manual, a superbly notchy short-throw unit that’s both fast and smooth and just asks to be used frequently. Both the manual and the six-speed automatic transmissions were specifi-

cally developed for the BRZ. The automatic gets paddle gear shifts. BRZ breaks new ground for Subaru in Australia in having rear-wheel drive. All other models sold here have allwheel drive (AWD). The little Subie coupe gets a fivestar ANCAP safety rating courtesy of seven airbags; stability and traction control; ABS brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution and brake assist; Isofix child seat anchor points; LCD daytime running lights; front and rear fog lights; hill start assist; and reversing camera. Also new for the MY17 BRZ is a

Vehicle Dynamic Control ‘Track’ for extra performance. Information display is through a 6.2-inch LCD touchscreen. Bluetooth pairing is fast and logical and the USB and auxiliary sockets are in the front of the central console. The audio system has six speakers but having to compete against the combination of the engine burble and road noise means the sound quality isn’t great. As expected in a car of this type, the ride is firm with plenty of feel for the road yet comfortable enough for an extended trip. Steering is precise and direct with excellent feedback to the driver. Ride comfort is up with the best in this class. There’s no loss of driver confidence in the use of two-wheel rather than four-wheel drive, with the BRZ suspension producing plenty of grip and stability. Driving height is lower than we would prefer but that’s a minor compromise for all the handling benefits. It’s always offered excellent value never more so than now with a price cut and added equipment bringing the starting price down to $32,990 prior to on-road costs.
