Broken dreams By Bonny Burrows A toddler has narrowly avoided injury after sitting on broken glass melted into a Pakenham playground’s play equipment. Brooke Ferroni’s two-year old son Hunter was playing at the John Street Park on 8 February when he complanied of a sore knee. ‘I gathered it was just from him climbing up on the gym equipment ... but then he said his knee hurt again,” Ms Ferroni said. Ms Ferroni said she was shocked to find a strange residue of “concrete with shards of glass through it” on the equipment. “I was utterly shocked. I couldn’t believe what I saw and that I had let him climb onto that,” Ms Ferroni said. “Thankfully he was not hurt; only a light graze on his knee. Not deep or enough to make it bleed, but I’m so grateful he had a nappy on or it probably would have cut or grazed his bottom.” Ms Ferroni said she tried to call Cardinia Shire Council to report the hazard as soon as she got home from the park, but was put on a waiting queue. Heavily pregnant and with a tired toddler, Ms Ferroni decided to put her son to bed and lodge a complaint through council’s website and a phone app ‘Snap, Send, Solve’ which reports incidents to relevant bodies. Ms Ferroni had not been contacted by council as of 24 February but council assured The Gazette it had removed the glass on the day of the incident. “Our Operations team acted immediately on receiving the report, with an officer assessing the site and our Maintenance team removed the glass the same day,” Cardinia Shire Council manager of Operations Charles Taveira said. “Playground and exercise equipment are assessed monthly

The glass on the play equipment. 165459 and hazards posing a public safety risk, such as in this report, are acted on immediately. “Council encourages park visitors with information about potential safety hazards or damage to play or exercise equipment to contact council on 1300 787 624.” The event has left the Pakenham mother wary of potential playground hazards. “This is the first time I have come across something in a child’s playground that is potentially harmful,” she said. “It’s made me a lot more cautious about being the first ones to go to a playground in the morning, as we normally always go once we have done school drop off. “I definitely would like to warn other parents if they are the first ones there to always inspect the equipment before letting their precious ones play.”

Long locks cut out for a cancer cure

Janette Lind's tresses. 165471

By Bonny Burrows Two best friends are set to lose their iconic long tresses as part of the World’s Greatest Shave. Local mothers Tennielle Williamson and Janette Lind will let their children cut off their manes in a bid to bring funds and awareness to the Leukaemia Foundation. The duo aim to raise $2000 for the foundation by 18 March, the day of the shave, with donations sitting just over $1000 on Tuesday morning. Ms Lind said she was inspired to lose all 94 centimetres of her hair because she was sick and tired of kids getting the awful disease. Her sister was also affected by cancer several years ago and she knows of others who have been struck by the dreadful disease. “It’s really not fair, they should have a cure by now,” she said. “I figured I’d participate as the poor kids that get the cancer don’t get the choice to shave their head, but I do.” Ms Williamson said both her parents were in remission, so she had witnessed first-hand the importance of cancer research.

Tennielle Williamson will shave her hair. 165471

Her seven-year-old daughter Emily also wanted to do her part and has recently cut her hair to be donated as a wig. Ms Williamson said she was very proud.

Ms Williamson and Ms Lind urged the community to get behind the annual fund-raiser. “Please dig deep. It’s something they need to find a cure for, goodness sake,” Ms Lind said.

The pair’s shave is planned for noon on 18 March at Pakenham Market Place near Optus. Everyone is welcome to come along. Donations can be made at my.leukaemiafoundation.org.au/ janettelind1

Longer platforms on track By Victoria Stone-Meadows

Member for Eastern Victoria Daniel Mulino with construction workers at the site of the new high capacity train depot in Pakenham. Picture: CONTRIBUTED

A new train depot in Pakenham and longer platforms at stations along the Pakenham and Cranbourne lines are among upgrades taking place on the Melbourne train network. The $660 million upgrades will cause disruptions to services along the south east rail corridor during April with buses to replace trains while the upgrades are underway. Member for Eastern Victoria Daniel Mulino visited the construction site of the new train depot in Pakenham on Friday 18 February to inspect the works underway. The new depot will include a maintenance facility, hightech simulator and stabling for up to 30 of the 65 new highcapacity metro trains.

The construction of the depot will also support local business with 87 per cent local materials going into the project and 100 ongoing local jobs when complete. Apprentices and trainees will form 15 per cent of the workforce, and a further 7 per cent will be disadvantaged workers; addressing unemployment and skills shortages in the south east. Mr Mulino said the upgrade works to the train lines would be a boon for the Pakenham and surrounding areas. “This new depot is a huge win for Pakenham, and will support bigger trains and better services right along the Cranbourne-Pakenham line,” he said. “It will provide work, skills and opportunities for hundreds of people, and help thousands

more get home safer and sooner.” Platforms at 13 existing stations along the Pakenham and Cranbourne train lines will be extended to accommodate the new high capacity trains. The upgrades will also see 70 kilometres of overhead power lines rebuilt and 20 substations will be built or upgraded to improve service reliability. Premier Daniel Andrews said the new trains and upgrades to the train stations would mean more residents of the south-east would be able to get to and from the city. “Bigger trains, better stations, and no level crossings will get tens of thousands of people in Melbourne’s south east home safer and sooner every day,” he said.

Community members young and old turned out to support Cardinia’s Relay for Life at the weekend. The annual Cancer Council fundraiser saw an estimated 1000 people from across the shire come together for the annual relay, with participants walking from 6pm Friday to lunchtime Saturday in the hope of one day finding a cure to the deadly disease. Relay Committee Chairperson John Henzen said he was very pleased with the turn-out, and even more so with the estimated funds raised - currently about $114,000. “It’s fantastic, the number of teams and participants are very similar to last year but a lot more has been raised,” Mr Henzen said. The event, held at Pakenham’s Toomuc Reserve, kicked off with the opening ceremony celebrating cancer survivors and also included the annual candlelight ceremony commemorating those who have lost their fight. Mr Henzen said the relay was full of many difficult emotions, but “everyone is there supporting one another”. Coles Superheroes team member Jessica Thompson was joined by her sister and grandparents at the event. Ms Thompson, who has been participating in the fund-raiser for the last

Cranbourne SES push is on By Victoria Stone-Meadows

MP for Cranbourne Jude Perera will be renewing calls for funding from the State Government to establish a new SES unit in Cranbourne. Picture: CONTRIBUTED Unit Controller for Narre Warren SES Clinton Brown said another unit in the Casey region would greatly improve their capacity to serve and help the growing population of the region. “It’s really about trying to service the ever growing southern corridor, specifically the Warneet, Clyde, Pearcedale, and surrounding areas, he said. “In our current capacity, it takes us about 30 or 40 minutes even with red and blue flashing lights on the main

City of Casey Mayor Councillor Sam Aziz said a new SES unit in the Casey region would greatly improve the safety of residents. “Our emergency service personnel do an amazing job protecting lives and property in our great city, he said. “But it’s clear our growing population will put unsustainable pressures on our community’s safety if the number of first responders don’t keep pace. “A Cranbourne SES unit would reduce the burden on Narre Warren and

provide essential community protection in times of emergency. Mr Perera will be setting up a petition to gather more support from local residents and through his Facebook page that residents are encouraged to sign and support. “If they are planning to start a petition we are happy to support it, Mr Brown said. “We urge people to get behind it and there for people to register their interest.

roads to get a job in the southern parts of Casey. Mr Brown also said it would mean a greater pool of volunteers to draw from to increase the numbers of SES members in the region. “The other big thing is it opens up opportunities for volunteers from that area, he said. “For someone in Clyde or Warneet, it takes 30 minutes to get to the unit station in Narre Warren so it is not feasible for them to get to a job.

Plans for an SES unit to be based in Cranbourne have moved a step closer, with Casey Council deciding on a site for the unit and MP Jude Perera lobbying the State Government for funding. Casey Council has selected a site in Cyril Beechey Lane, Cranbourne the old Council Transfer Station site behind the racecourse - as the location for the new unit. Mr Perera will present the case for funding for a new SES unit to State Parliament as soon as possible. In his address to parliament, Mr Perera will mention the vast area of Casey that is currently covered by Narre Warren SES that would be better served by a unit based in Cranbourne. “The nearest SES unit is located in Narre Warren, Mr Perera’s speech reads. “I have had reports that there had been several jobs in the southern part of Casey which took teams more than 40 minutes to attend. “The SES is desperately in need of a second depot in the southern part of Casey, to serve the rapidly expanding electorate of Cranbourne and its surrounds. Councillor Steve Beardon, who has been working with Mr Perera to establish a new SES unit in Casey, said there was no shortage of people who would volunteer to be a member of a Cranbourne SES unit. “There are many people in Cranbourne who are keen to be part of everything in Cranbourne, he said. “I don’t think we will have any problems filling the unit with volunteers; we have lots of young people who are happy to support our community. The majority of the Casey region is currently serviced by the Narre Warren SES, which has been in operation for 10 years.

Man smashes way Letters out of petrol station Lenscape

A 30-year-old Cranbourne man has been arrested after allegedly smashing his way out of a locked petrol station with a hammer. The man was charged with two counts of armed robbery and two counts of burglary, after his arrest on Friday 24 February. He first came to the attention of police after he allegedly robbed a petrol station at 181 High Street, Cranbourne on Saturday 4 February where he hid a weapon inside his jumper. The same man then allegedly stolen over $2000 worth of male aftershaves from perfume kiosks inside the Cranbourne Shopping Centre. His downfall came on Friday 24 February when he returned to the same petrol station in Cranbourne, armed with a hammer, allegedly with the intention of robbing it a second time. The same attendant who was working the first time the petrol station was robbed this time called security and locked the man inside the store.

At a Casey Council meeting last Tuesday 21 February, the 309,000 residents of Casey watched as they lost their democratic rights. Democracy became dead, buried and gone. Elected councillors diminished into a rubber stamp process of the administrative arm - in this case the planning department. Councillors were presented with a 93-page document riddled with bias, with only one objective. Present the elected councillors with no other option but to leave over 3000 residents high and dry and sign off, unchallenged the approval that will lead to the complete vandalism of our tree-lined promenade, our homes' entry that can never be replaced. Council state the residents have no claim, saying Sidcorp the original developer engaged in a clever marketing campaign to entice prospective buyers to build their homes and invest their money. It worked. Council noted our parkland at our entrance was always temporary, but someone forgot to tell us for nearly 20 years. From 28 October when residents found our entry was to change forever, our council has been engaged in what could be seen as a cloud of secrecy and misinformation allegedly led by the CEO Mike Tyler and allegedly Mayor Sam Aziz. Thousands of Berwick Springs residents were never consulted, communicated any changes or given the respect and right to object. Is this 2017? Cr Aziz our ward councillor has played a public blame game on any target willing to challenge him, using his power and influence to criticise the State Government, government authorities and everyday residents who just wanted answers. Councillor Aziz's behaviour can only be described as abhorrent and that of a desperate man trying to save political fallout. He has certainly done himself no favours with his personal attacks on residents on Facebook, with only his keen supporters willing to defend his vindictive comments. This is why I call for changes to council now. As our ward councillor he should firstly represent the residents of Springfield Ward. Instead his platform has been “why should I give Berwick Springs residents their wishes?" “this will all blow over in 18 months", “you are idiots, fools, buffoons and hysterical followers". Cr Aziz has completely neglected and failed in his KPI to represent us. His conflict as mayor is evident and for

that reason I call for his resignation as ward councillor for Springfield Ward, otherwise we are to go for nearly four years accepting this level of failure. He had an opportunity to back us and he turned his back - no-one to blame here but yourself, Cr Aziz. Let someone else with more conviction and moral substance represent the people and give the residents here some level of confidence in local government. In fact Cr Aziz has done his best to undermine the democratic process and I allege from from a reliable source that Cr Aziz directed Casey councillors not to attend a recent resident rally at the Berwick Springs lake. Democracy Cr Aziz style. Not even his own councillors are willing to stand up to his behaviour. Sadly with a state election next year, Cr Aziz may very well nominate - I ask you if he can’t represent us at a local level , what damage could he do at state level? God help us, because Sam Aziz won’t. Michael Ball, Narre Warren South.

Unholy row Memo to the mayor and councillors of the City of Casey.

Ray’s

say

I’m at a loss for words to describe my feelings on a report (Herald Sun, Monday 20 February) regarding a junket to Israel by members of your council. You people were elected by the residents to enable the City of Casey to continue to grow and prosper. In both the economic and political climate we experience today, I do not believe your decision to undertake this junket is in the best interests of the ratepayers who will be funding it. Your council appears to be ignorant as to the feelings of the ratepayers and you also have the audacity of being the only metropolitan council to apply for an increase in the rate cap as set by the State Government. I’m sure my feelings will be echoed by a great percentage of Casey ratepayers. Oh, and by the way! Maybe one of you jetsetters could let me know why approximately two years ago there were white arrows spraypainted on the footpath either side of my driveway, or why approximately 18 months ago a dead tree was removed from my nature strip by the council and we are still waiting for a replacement. Maybe the sister city could help fix it? Your comments would be appreciated. Peter Walsh, Berwick.

Park is trashed By Victoria Stone-Meadows

MPs Inga Peulich, Tim Smith, and Gordon Rich-Phillips at a population forum in Cranbourne. Picture: CONTRIBUTED

Taskforce bid to move people By Victoria Stone-Meadows The Victorian Coalition Population Taskforce hosted a forum in Cranbourne on Friday 24 February to discuss the challenges faced by residents of the booming south-east suburbs. The forum was chaired by MP Tim Smith, who also chairs the taskforce, and was attended by coalition MPs Gordon Rich-Phillips and Inga Peulich as well as City of Casey Mayor Sam Aziz. The taskforce was officially launched by Victorian Opposition Leader Matthew Guy on 15 November 2016 and will focus on ways to entice the state’s growing population away from Melbourne’s suburbs and into regional areas. The taskforce will also be investigating issues surrounding jobs, housing, services, and transport infrastructure to manage the growing population of the state. Cr Aziz said the forum was a positive step in informing future policy around population growth in the south-east. “It was a great step forward in framing policy for managing the population growth in the southeast,” he said.

“I gave them some inserting points such as how critical it is for road and transport infrastructure to support the massive population. “I urged the MPs present to put pressure on the State Government to move on the $500 million offer from the Federal Government for the road network.” Cr Aziz also spoke about the need for a tailored approach to rate capping that takes into account the needs of councils operating in growth areas. “The consensus was that a populist and generalist rate capping across all councils does not work,” he said. “It might work for a council like Stonnington but for a council like Casey which is required to deliver $50 or $60 million of infrastructure every year it doesn’t work.” The taskforce is made up of members from research institutes, universities, as well as public and private sector interest groups. It will hold more community meeting and forums in Shepparton, Ballarat, Geelong, Bendigo, the Latrobe Valley, Wodonga and Mildura before delivering a final report to MP Matthew Guy late in the year.

The Merinda Park Learning and Community Centre were greeted with a shocking sight when they returned to their Endeavour Drive address on Tuesday 21 February. The members of the learning centre arrived at the property to find a skip bin had been raided, masking tape and paint tins had been strewn across the park and a bong left behind in the rotunda. The building has been closed for eight months as renovations were undertaken at the property, and Merinda Park Learning and Community Centre CEO Jan Gilchrist said it was disgraceful to see what had happened when they returned. “We had just moved back in, and come in this morning to a bong and masking tape all around the park, graffiti everywhere, and the skip and strewn around, other rubbish about and more,” she said. “We are here to help, support, and serve the community, but then we have these kids that are coming in and doing this sort of thing.” “The skate ramp has been tidied up and painted, but now has graffiti all over it; it is disappointing to see the park in that state.” The Merinda Park Learning and Community Centre operates from within the ground of Merinda Park which is owned and maintained by the City of Casey.

“It is council land in the park, but we try to keep our areas tidy and clean and report graffiti which happens on a regular basis and council mows it,” Ms Gilchrist said. “We take pride in the park and try to keep it respectable so parents can go out with their kids to the playground, so we sort of have that community sense of pride; we want parents and students to be able to use the rotunda to eat lunch and have break.” Ms Gilchrist said the park had been impacted by this behaviour before, and it always fell back on the volunteers or students at the centre to pick up the pieces. “I would say this happens quite regularly; we are talking teenagers and a bit younger mostly get out into the park and congregate leaving rubbish around or older teens of driving age leaving rubbish in the car park,” she said. “We know in the past there have been drug deals done in the car park, and we have come back to a new building this is not quite finished but our students can’t go out to the park until we go out and clean it up.” While Ms Gilchrist said there were improvements that could be made to the park to deter people from this behaviour; she thinks it was designed in a way that left it open for abuse. “We could probably use some better lighting at night,” she said. “We’ve got good light-

Jan Gilchrist, right, tells Cr Amanda Stapledon all about the trashed park. 165280 Pictures: STEWART CHAMBERS ing in the car park, but after hours the area is very open to abuse and people being able to get here while the housing around has all the back fences so the residential area isn’t facing into the park at all.” “A presence of police would also be welcome, but knowing what police resources are like it’s not possible as it stands at the moment.” Ms Gilchrist is encouraging the neighbours of the community learning centre to keep an eye out after dark for any activity in the park and to report suspicious behaviour to the police. “We are making community aware of what has occurred, so if residents hear noises we ask them to stick

their head over the back fence and have a look and ring the police if you see anything,” she said. “The more times it’s reported, the more chance we have they will do drive-bys, but as it is they think there are no issues.”

Men of ideas By Victoria Stone-Meadows The first ever OM:NI (Older Men, New Ideas) Group in the City of Casey is celebrating 10 years of support for men in their retirement years. The group meets on a monthly basis at the Mechanics Hall in Narre Warren, with a focus on improving the health, well-being and lifestyle of men over 50. The Casey OM:NI group were established in 2007 following an agreement between the City of Casey, the Australian Council on the Ageing and founding OM:NI members.

Bernie Bond, John Doutch and Spencer Wanklyn are the original and still active members of the group who bought the OM:NI to Casey. Over the last 10 years, the group has attracted members from many and varied skills and experiences to ensure discussion in the group is informative and helpful for all members. The group is guided by a set of guidelines about the expectations of people participating in the group on respect, trust, confidentiality and acceptance of each other. Brian Regan of the Casey

OM:NI said the success of the discussion group can be attributed to the dedication and hard work of the involved volunteers. The groups model has been replicated by other OM:NI groups in the region including at Balla Balla Community Centre, Brentwood Park in Berwick, Beaconsfield Community Centre, Outlook Community Centre in Pakenham and at Woodlands Park retirement villiage in Berwick. Anyone interested in joining an OM:NI group in Casey can contact John Doutch on 0431 844 833 or Brian Regan on 0408 545 984.

By Victoria Stone-Meadows Cannons Creek’s resident Peacock Andrew has settled well into his new home in Cranbourne South, according to Nigel Williamson of Nigel’s Animal Rescue. The peacock was captured in a stress-free operation in a garage in Cannons Creek on 15 November 2016 and transported to his new home less than 15 minutes away. Andrew the Peacock was a permanent resident of Cannons Creek for about seven years, and no one seems to know where he came from. However, City of Casey council received a number of complaints about Andrew late last year and Nigel’s Animal Rescue was given the task of moving Andrew out of the town. “I was the one that caught him; it was the easiest capture imaginable,” Mr Williamson said.

Andrew the Peacock, a long time resident of Cannons Creek 160911 “It was completely stressfree; he had walked into a garage, so I closed the door, put a

net over him, wrapped in a blanket and 12 minutes later he was released at the new property.” “It all happened quickly and smoothly.” Mr Williamson said the bird behaved very well during transportation and loves his new digs. “He’s settled in well and he has got his harem of about three to four hens that he needs,” Mr Williamson said. “He is the oldest one in the group, and while nobody knows his real age he has the longest tail feathers and that’s how you can tell.” “He is the king of the group, so I am sure he is very happy now.” The property Andrew the Peacock has been moved to has a range of other birds including geese, ducks, pigeons and chickens on the 10 acres as well as five dams.

also the length of time it takes to get into the city is a constant source of frustration with local commuters,” Mr Paynter said. He said while Pakenham commuters had accepted the line’s conditions “to a certain extent” it was no good expecting people to use trains that didn’t run to time. “People rely on transport for employment. They need to know the 8.10am train arrives and leaves at 8.10am otherwise it forces them off public transport and onto our roads which are heavily congested,” Mr Paynter said. ”For others their only means of transport is public transport, and it’s extremely frustrating. Pakenham trains are officially the worst for punctuality on the Metro train network, data from Public Transport Victoria reveals. Performance results, released by the public transport statutory authority on Friday, show just over 86 per cent of Pakenham’s service ran on time during the last 12 months. In comparison, more than 96 per cent of Glen Waverly and more than 95 per cent of Sandringham services operated to schedule. Member for Bass Brian Paynter wasn’t surprised with the figures and said the problem of train punctuality was regularly raised with his

To combat the issue he would like to see a strict enforcement of train times on the network and a major investment in the crossings east of Dandenong including Main Street and McGregor Road, Pakenham, which hadn’t been upgraded for “many, many years”. “Signals are down when they don’t need to be, causing traffic congestion,” he said. “This is not just a problem for locals, but those in neighbouring areas such as Officer, or those travelling through from the country.” Mr Paynter said the government wasn’t keeping up with the demand of growth corridors such as Pakenham well enough. He acknowledged it was a massive task, “but it’s their responsibility”. Public Transport Minister Ja-

By Victoria Stone-Meadows Trail bike riders across Casey, Cardinia and Greater Dandenong are being asked to contribute to a plan for a safer network of bike trails in Neerim East State Forest. One quarter of all motorcycle deaths and serious injuries occur off-road in the Gippsland region, prompting the State Government to take action to improve rider safety. safer track network. VicRoads Planning manager Pas Monacella said it was important to have insight from the people who use the current tracks when planning the improvements. “There have been 33 serious injury crashes in the Neerim East State Forest between 2010 and 2015,” she said. “We need to know about riders’ experiences, issues and preferences so that we can develop the right safety solution that will reduce the crash risk while continuing to offer the challenging elements they seek.”

Safety improvement options include repairing or redesigning current tracks, creating new dedicated trail bike tracks, installing signposts and markers, and creating emergency service access points. Riders, forest users and the wider community can provide feedback on the plans and route design options through online surveys and an interactive map of the forest with consultation closing on 2 April. PEAKE BAGS TOP AWARD Leading Berwick-based agency Peake Real Estate has taken out the award for Service Excellence Agency of the Year at the 11th annual Australasian Real Estate Results Awards (ARERAs) - the independent real estate industry’s most prestigious accolades - held in Sydney on Monday night. Hosted by peak industry coaching and training body Real Estate Results Network (RERN), this year’s ARERAs boasted a strong field of contenders with more than 160 finalists competing in 36 categories for the honour of being named among the industry’s top achievers. The winners were announced at a spectacular Roaring Twenties-themed gala event at the International Convention Centre (ICC) on Monday night, coinciding with Kickstart - RERN’s largest annual conference, also staged at the ICC. Close to 30 of Australasia’s independent agencies were finalists in 15 agency award categories while dozens of agents vied for honours in 21 individual award categories, including Agent of the Year, Marketing Campaign of the Year, Rising Star Agency of the Year, New Agent of the Year and Property Management Performer of Year, among others. RERN founder Michael Sheargold congratulated Peake Real Estate for their outstanding efforts and results in 2016. “This year’s field of finalists was the finest and most competitive in ARERA’s history, and their performances are a credit to Australasia’s independent real

estate industry as it continues to expand and flourish,” Mr Sheargold said. “The ARERAs are highly regarded and represent the peak achievement within the region’s independent property sector. “We salute all of the finalists and winners whose dedication, excellence and professionalism reflect so highly on the industry. “Our winners epitomise the industry’s ideals and values, and I know they will only continue to raise the bar of excellence within independent real estate throughout Australasia in 2017.” The ARERAs presentation formed a program highlight of Kickstart, a Members-only event running from Monday, 20 February to Tuesday, 21 February, providing an opportunity for principals, agents and managers to network, share and learn from industry experts. RERN is Australasia’s leading network of independent agencies, with more than 1200 principals and agents who are members throughout Australia and New Zealand. The Network offers expert support and services to help agencies and their teams realise their full potential, and it has assisted hundreds of principals to improve their real estate business model and recipes for success. SEJ Presenting your home for sale. Whilst we are in an extremely buoyant and strong market, which is seeing prices being achieved that are well above average, it is still important to remember, your selling price will still be affected by the presentation of your home and the quality of the marketing your agent is prepared to do on your behalf. Buyers want clean, well presented homes and will pay more if you can get this right. It is still very important to market your home to the world. Whether selling your family home, an investment property or even a block of land, you must have the home as clean and well presented as can be. This starts out front with your street appeal. Fresh tan bark on the gardens, well mowed lawns, with the edges nice and straight and a clean looking façade count. Once inside, the home must not only look clean, it must smell fresh and be at a comfortable temperature. If in doubt, visit some display homes and try to get your home as close as you can to this standard. If you interview an agent and they inform you that this doesn’t matter and it won’t make any difference, you might want to use a different agent. We always want to see you present the best looking house in the market. This ensures more viewers, which equals more interested buyers and offers which will drive your price up by as much as 10-15%. Well worth the effort when you do the maths. If you need any advice on selling or presenting your home for sale, feel free to call our experienced, highly trained team at O’Brien Real Estate on 5940 4044 and will be only too happy to help.

Entertainment Dining, what’s on, bands and more…

When Troy gets intimate Troy Cassar-Daley is proud to present his new album Things I Carry Around live in concert with a very intimate show at the Village Green Hotel on Wednesday 15 March. Cassar-Daley said the album was like “opening up a large suitcase and having memories and family photographs and sounds and scents and tears and laughter and heartbreak all tumble out around you.“ The songs from this album were inspired through the process of gathering stories, the ones Cassar-Daley’s fans have been waiting to hear – his own – in the book Things I Carry Around. Cassar-Daley writes and sings about what he knows, without frills, without varnish, with a purity that somehow makes his experiences universal. “In 2017 My Things I Carry Around tour will be an interesting journey of storytelling and brand-new music,“ he said. “The setting will be like a lounge room so you will feel like you are at my house, with me sitting and playing for you. I’ve always wanted to do an intimate show like this for a while with myself and two other musicians. “We will embark on a tour of shows around the country with the intimacy of a house party. “When you knock on the door at these shows, I will be the one who

Support act Fanny Lumsden. answers it and I can’t wait to welcome you in! See you out on the road friends!” Cassar-Daley took home the coveted Album Of The Year award for Things I Carry Around at the 2017 Country Music Awards of Australia in Tamworth in January. Cassar-Daley was also elevated to the Australasian Country Music Roll of Renown and is the 50th artist to be added to the memorial attraction in Tamworth that has been inducting country music’s greats since 1976. Fanny Lumsden will support Cassar-Daley on tour.

Country music star Troy Cassar-Daley. Experience the power of both singers at the Village Green Hotel, corner Springvale and Ferntree Gully roads on Wednesday 15 March.

Dinner and show for allocated seating from 5.30pm. Show starts at 8.30pm. Tickets available from the club on

John smashes WGCA record By David Nagel He can divide opinion as well as he can cut a cricket ball, but the fact remains that the highest individual score in the history of West Gippsland cricket now belongs to Merinda Park star John Cuthbertson. The hard-hitting right hander created history on Saturday, belting an incredible 50 fours and 10 sixes on his way to 360 runs against Emerald in the F Grade encounter at Donnelly Reserve. He posted a remarkable 410-run stand with Grant Bloomer (107 not out) as the Cobras sped to a massive 2/507 from their 70 overs. It’s the second time the pair has run rampant this season, Cuthbertson (263) and Bloomer (123) piling on a 392-run partnership against Pakenham in Round 6. Cuthbertson has now made 1193 runs for the season at the impressive average of 91.8. His dominance has encouraged many on social media to question his validity as an F Grade player, with his record over the years suggesting he should slot in at a higher level. But this season he has taken it even

further, his partnership with Bloomer producing incredible results. “It helps having him at the other end; he keeps talking and stops me from having those brain fades I’ve been having since I’ve been getting older,” Cuthbertson said. “It’s just the little things he says, setting targets along the way and he just makes me think about my game a bit more. He’s definitely played a big role in both of those big partnerships this season; he’s a freak of a batsman and a great team mate.” Cuthbertson took advantage of the perfect storm on Saturday, Emerald arriving with just nine players on a small ground with a lightning fast outfield. But still not everything went according to plan, with some early luck and an ailing body causing him some headaches. “I got dropped early and then nicked one through to the keeper who dropped it as well,” the record holder said. “I gave a few tough chances as well, and both physically and mentally it was pretty challenging. I’ve got nerve and lower disc problems in my back, so my back was killing me. I’m probably an idiot, and old, stub-

born and stupid, but you don’t get too many chances like that so I just stayed out there and rode my luck. “My son Dylan was watching and he knew how much pain I was in, he wanted me to kick the stumps over and get off the ground at one stage.” Emerald’s attack was young and obviously undermanned, but Cuthbertson refused to be drawn into whether the standard of lower grade cricket had diminished in recent years. “Look, I’m not going to judge other clubs, but some are strong in the lower grades and some are struggling,” he said. “Lang Lang, Upper Beaconsfield and Carlisle Park, they’ve got fantastic bowling attacks in F Grade and it’s going to be tough for us to get through finals. I felt for Emerald, they just didn’t have that experienced bowler who could tie up an end but they gave 110-percent in the field all day. “The ground was quick; they only had nine players and there were plenty of gaps around and I did get dropped a few times off some tough chances. Some days you get lucky and I got super-lucky on the weekend.”

Cuthbertson said the criticism levelled his way didn’t bother him at all. “Seriously, it doesn’t bother me one bit,” he said. “Maybe I should be playing D Grade, but we’ve had it done to us in the past and it’s still happening at other clubs right now. If my back holds up and I can train I might have a crack at a higher level next season. I just love playing the game and I’ll play higher if I get things right.” The Cobras star said he felt a great sense of achievement at cracking the magical 300-run barrier. “The scoreboard was getting updated towards the end and I saw 286 on the board and I started counting the runs,” he said, before taking a backhanded swipe at his critics. “I was stoked when I got to 300, who wouldn’t be, and then I just started swinging and the ball kept going through the gaps. Breaking records like this is a great memory for players, I just hope when someone breaks this record we get behind them and congratulate them. Someone will top this one day and I’ll be the first bloke to shake his hand and say well done.”

Growing in leaps and bounds

Matt D’Arcy, pictured here before jetting off to the States to play at Green Mountain College in Vermont, is hell-bent on making his hoops dreams a reality. 158125 Picture: RUSSELL BENNETT D’Arcy is also hoping to compete in the Green Mountain College track and field team in events such as the 100 metres, 200 metres, and 400 metres. The diminutive guard’s second season in a four-year scholarship starts back at Green Mountain in September. D’Arcy told the Gazette last August that his opportunity of a lifetime came about through his former coach at the Hallam Senior Sports Academy, David Wyatt. He’d all but given up hope of securing a scholarship in 2016 until the night before he was due to start a sports development course at Victoria University, when he received an email with the college offer. “Playing basketball in America is all I ever wanted to do,” D’Arcy said in August from the stands at the Cardinia Life

Stadium in Pakenham, looking over Court 1 - which used to be his home floor for so long. He said if it wasn’t for the endless support from his parents, team mates and coaches - such as Wyatt, current Warriors Big V Youth League coach Simo Pajdic and former Division 2 men’s coach Ryan Rogers - there’s no way he would be in the position he’s currently in. In other Pakenham basketball news, the Victorian State Ivor Burge men’s team - featuring local young gun Ryan Briggs - made it 13 championships in a row with a clinical 78-43 thumping of South Australia. During the competition Briggs recorded his first ever triple-double with 21 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 assists in one game.

For Pakenham basketballer Matt D’Arcy’s entire career he’s been told he’s too short, too small, and not strong enough and he keeps proving those doubters wrong. The former Warriors point guard has just completed his first season with the Green Mountain College Eagles - an NCAA Division 3 US college basketball program based in Vermont. Playing predominantly as a back-up point guard in his freshman year, D’Arcy also made his way into the starting line-up for a couple of games. His hectic schedule included training six days per week, travelling to colleges over six hours away, and playing in a number of tournaments. During breaks in his schedule he’s also visited New York City, Disneyland and Universal Studios, and attended three NBA games - including seeing the Golden State Warriors and ‘splash brothers’ Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson up close. Though D’Arcy’s 2016/17 is complete - given the Eagles missed out on a play-off berth he still has over two months of college to complete before he heads home to Pakenham for a break in May. He is studying elementary (primary school) teaching, which has already included teaching rounds in a local American school. Over the next few months

Teams facing up to finals countdown By David Nagel Finals fever has come early in the West Gippsland Cricket Association Premier Division with Kooweerup (228) and Tooradin engaged in a high-stakes final-round shootout at Tooradin on Saturday. The Demons’ fate is already determined - they’ll finish top of the ladder and take on Cardinia on semifinal weekend - but the Seagulls have plenty to play for. This week’s chase will determine if they finish second and host Pakenham in week one of the finals, or finish third and be forced to make the tricky trip to Toomuc Reserve to take on the reigning champions. And don’t forget - if the weather gods intervene on semi-final weekend the top-two finishers go through. So there’s still plenty at stake. Day one saw a typically see-sawing contest between the two powerhouses - Tooradin with the early initiative before the Demons middle order fought back with a vengeance. Cal O’Hare (4/48) set the scene for the Gulls, removing potent openers Mark Cooper (2) and Chris O’Hara (24) before a steady stream of batsmen tried to settle the score. Several Demons made starts but it came down to the youngest and oldest players to have the biggest impact ... a 15-year-old star on the rise and a 41-year-old veteran who has seen it and done it before. Mitch Cammarano (47) showed composure beyond his years, sharing partnerships of 28 with Jess Mathers (24) and a crucial 62-run stand with Matt Bright (27) before, ironically, passing the baton to Davey (38). The Demons stalwart did what he does best, guiding his team to an impressive total. “I thought it was a great test,” Davey said of day one. “We were happy with it in the

Don’t you just love it when a plan pays off? Tooradin’s wizard behind the stumps Tom Hussey Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS celebrates the leg-side stumping of Ben Spicer. 165319 end - it definitely gives us something to bowl to. “They’ve got to win (to hold on to second spot) so they’ll definitely be up for it this week.” Aaron Avery (2/22) and Kade Burns (2/55) gave O’Hare solid support for the Gulls. Pakenham fine-tuned its finals bowling strategies with a top-notch performance against Merinda Park (145) at Donnelly Reserve. Tom Tyrrell (4/24) was once again the star for the Lions, combining a nagging line and length with the uncanny ability to bowl the unplayable ball.

Tyrrell, Chris Savage (2/27) and skipper Dom Paynter (1/31) had the Cobras in all sorts of trouble at 5/34, and again at 6/60, before the home side showed some spirit. Andy Martin (44) and Danny Diwell (27) at least gave the score an air of respectability. Emerald (241) will narrowly avoid relegation once again after Geordie Scott (90) revived the Bombers’ spirits at Chandler Reserve. Dangling at 6/60, Mitchell Thomas (34) led the Bombers out of trouble before Scott and veteran Clinton Marsh (36) applied the finishing touches.

Nick Kyval (5/71), Luke Gunton (2/26) and Jack Donaldson (2/48) were among the wickets for the relegation-bound Yabbies. And Cardinia is in the box seat after its bowlers kept close tabs on Upper Beaconsfield (184) at Gunton Oval. Bath Perera (77 not out) and Rukshan Carim (49) showed their class for the Maroons but had too few mates come along for the ride. The unstoppable Dwayne Doig (4/90 off 34) bowled a marathon spell for the Bulls, while skipper Neil Barfuss (3/17) had a day out in his 100th game for the club.
