Premier Daniel Andrews said the new police recruits will be a constant benefit to growth communities. “The academy is full and we’ve changed the way police recruit,” he said. “Now each month, every month, every year we will have a steady amount going through the academy.” “We realised there was a need for a more routine, regular recruitment process and it’s a challenge but we will get them through the academy.” The Police Association’s Wayne Gatt echoed the premier’s sentiment to ensure the new police officers are delivered to the communities that need them most. “The Police Association is committed to ensuring that the extra 3000 police promised by the State Government over the next five years are deployed as a matter of priority to areas of greatest need, such as in Casey,” he said. “Getting boots on the ground to assist our members in existing stations must be a priority.” However, Mr Paynter says he is just as committed to campaigning for a new police station as a means of dealing with the crime in the region. “I’ll continue to campaign for my constituents until this police station is delivered,” he said. “Community safety must be the first priority of any government, but unfortunately Daniel Andrews has had his head in the sand for the last two years while crime in Casey spirals out of control.”

Victorian Opposition Leader Matthew Guy and Member for Bass Brian Paynter will meet in Clyde to renew a push for the State Government to build a police station in the area. The two parliamentary members are meeting at the Clyde Recreation Reserve on Thursday 16 February to call on the government to fund the new station. Mr Paynter first called for a police station in Clyde during parliament in August last year citing population growth and increase in crime for why a new police station is necessary. He said members of the Clyde community, which sits in the far north-west of the division of Bass, have contacted him many times to address the crime rate in the region. “Following several shocking crimes in the local community, constituents repeatedly tell me they want a visible police presence,” he said. “With fewer frontline police now than November 2014 across Victoria, growth areas such as Clyde urgently need more police and the stations to accommodate them.” “With thousands of extra residents moving into the area every year while crime continues to grow, it’s clear the region needs a lot more police.” However, a spokesperson from Victoria Police said there were no plans to build a police station in the Clyde area. “Police stations are buildings that do not deter crime while police out in the com-

munity and tasked to areas based on intelligence does deter criminal activity,” the spokesperson said. “The Chief Commissioner has acknowledged that growth corridors are a priority, of which Casey is one.” “When the new resources are supplied to communities across the state, we will have them on the road detecting crime and keeping people safe rather than sitting at police stations.” The Victorian Police Association agrees that there needs to be a stronger police presence in growth areas such as Clyde as a priority over building new stations. Incoming Police Association Secretary Wayne Gatt said the priority of both side of government should be more police members rather than new stations. “While we see merit in having a new stations service growing communities of the future, the priority for the ‘here and now’ is getting new police into the area so that they can positively impact on crime,” Mr Gatt said. “As one of the fastest growing local government areas in the country and with one of the worst police-to-population ratios, we’ve been saying for a long time that the City of Casey desperately needs more police.” The Victorian Government announced last year funding for the recruitment of more than 3000 new police officers with Casey being a priority area to place more officers. Over the limit ... and caught twice

Baseball bandits strike twice, cover bases By Victoria Stone-Meadows Robbers armed in baseball bats have stolen from two convenience stores on the same day in attacks police believe to be linked. The first robbery was at an independent milk bar on Hinrichsen Drive in Hallam, about 3.20pm on Friday 10 February. Who men with their faces covered entered the store with baseball bats and demanded the attendant hand over cash and cigarettes. The shop attendant complied with their demands before the men left the store and ran west along Buckeye Street, and witnesses reported seeing them run across a footbridge to Springfield Drive. At 6pm the same day, the Fleetwood Convenience Store on Fleetwood Drive in Narre Warren was also robbed by two men with baseball bats and face coverings. This time however, the store attendant was hit with a baseball bat and suffered bruising to his torso. In similar circumstances to the previous robbery, cash and cigarettes were stolen from the store before the men fled the shop on foot. This time the men ran north-east along Darling Way where they got into a dark coloured Holden and continued to drive north-east along Darling Way. The men were both dressed all in black with black caps and bandanas covering their faces. One of the men was wearing red gloves and the other grey gloves and both were wearing white sneakers. Anyone with information regarding these robberies is asked to contact the Narre Warren Crime Investigation Unit’s Detective Senior Constable Andrew Walker on 9705 3111.

A Doveton man has been caught speeding at more than three times the limit in Cranbourne West in the early hours of Monday 13 February. Somerville Highway Patrol members clocked the black 2015 Holden GTS travelling at an alleged speed of 139km/h on the Westernport Highway before being seen on Hall Road at 188km/h in a 60km/h zone, about 2am. The car was pulled over and immediately impounded for a period of 30 days at a cost of $1032 to the driver. A 24-year-old man was charged with two counts of exceeding the speed limit and speeding dangerously and will face Dandenong Magistrates’ Court at a later date. Senior Constable Paul Holtzinger said he was extremely disappointed with the behaviour. “To be driving a high powered vehicle at triple the speed limit not only greatly increases the chances of serious injury, but places members of the public at risk,“ SC Holtzinger said. “The message is very clear - Do not exceed the speed limit, drive to the conditions of the road and have respect for other road users.”

Casey chaplain plan By Victoria Stone-Meadows Casey City Council may spend thousands of dollars a year on placing chaplains in community spaces if a proposal put forward by Korus Connect, a division of Access Ministries, is accepted. Casey Council passed a motion to investigate placing chaplains in community spaces at a council meeting on 20 December 2016 specifically to target “at risk” youths. The motion, put forward by Cr Amanda Stapledon and supported by Cr Rosalie Crestani, has council ponder the value of placing chaplains in public places like shopping centres and sporting clubs. The motion specifically called for a meeting between council and Access Ministries’ community engagement branch Korus Connect to further discuss the program. The meeting between council and Korus Connect took place at the Casey Council offices on Tuesday 31 January 2017 in which Korus Connect presented their proposal to supply chaplains in Casey. The proposal from Korus Connect aims to have the program pilot launched this year with chaplains placed in locations identified by council.

The proposal also outlined the cost of supplying the chaplains, with one full-time chaplain working 35 hours a week costing a total of $71,525 per year. Korus Connect also proposed a ‘community conversation’ session be held prior to the program launch that involves community groups, government representatives, schools and members of the public. The community conversation would see the groups come together to discuss the program at an estimated cost of $3550 for venue hire, catering, and the hiring of a facilitator. While this funding may not be entirely supplied by council, Korus Connect suggested a range of funding options including council, bank grants, Federal Government grants, and other community and corporate-based avenues of funding. Korus Connect is the community engagement arm of Access Ministries which run the controversial chaplains in schools and special religious education programs in Victoria. In 2014, Access Ministries was caught supplying religious education material in schools that breached the regulations of the Victorian Education Department.

The debacle led to the Victorian Government changing the way religious education is provided in state schools. Councillor Steve Beardon, who opposed the motion to introduce the chaplains at the council meeting in December, is appalled by the cost of the program. “They charge $70,000 or more a year just for one, so it’s not even time donated as good will,” he said. “This raises so my questions to the religious or Liberal aligned councillors pushing this, and any other councillor.” “Don’t you think trained psychologists, counsellors and social workers are better equipped to support the most vulnerable in our community?” Former Casey Council Chaplain and Casey Neighbourhood Watch chairperson Rob Ward speaking on behalf of Korus Connect said it could be challenging for young people to access services and chaplains could help. “The word chaplain carries different meanings to different people, and it is positive for many,” he said. “It’s a bit of a leap to get people especially young people to see a counsellor or a psychologist and a chaplain is often a soft entry into that role.”

“A chaplain is often the human face between the needed professional services, and provides the soft entry.” Mr Ward said the funding of the chaplains would ideally be a whole community responsibility but Korus would like to see Casey council take the lead. “These things are up in the air, and what we are looking for is a sustainable effort and would like to see a community response,” he said. “We are all impacted if people are losing their way, and we shouldn’t be putting our hand to council and government all the time but council can play a significant role in facilitating this kind of work.” However, Cr Beardon said the cost of the program as a gateway for services that are already funded by council cannot be justified. “Council has trained youth workers, and funds many organisations with trained psychologists,” he said. “To those councillors pushing chaplains, do you think this money could be better targeted hiring a school GP or dental nurse?” “I would like a demonstrated tangible benefit to any investment with ratepayers’ money.”

Kokoda walk a challenge By Victoria Stone-Meadows A 63-year-old man from Narre Warren will be taking on the Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea later this year in a bid to raise money for a sick young woman. Ray Spinks has been on a health kick for about 12 months and he has a set a goal to improve himself while helping 19-year-old Jade Kollmorgen pay for her cystic fibrosis treatments. “It all started when I wanted to do something for myself,” Mr Spinks said. “I have lost 21kg in the last 12 months and my fitness has never been like this before.” Mr Spinks’ personal trainer suggested he set himself some goals for his fitness and that was when his personal mission changed into a quest to help Ms Kollmorgen. Mr Spinks met Jade through his wife Kathryn who works with Ms Kollmorgen’s mother Rachel. “I was sitting at home having a conversation with my wife about walking the Kokoda Track and I said I would like to do it for a charity,” Mr Spinks said. “We thought about it for a bit, looked at each other and we both said ‘let’s do it for Jade’.” Since then, Mr Spinks has been training every day to the lead up to him leaving for Papua New Guinea on 20 April to take on the mammoth 90km walk.

Ms Kollmorgen has been dealing with the effects of cystic fibrosis her entire life and said it changes the way she is able to live and function. “Over the last year I have been in hospital more and more,” she said. “Last year was worst; I was in hospital eight or nine times for two weeks at a time.” “I even went overseas for my gap year and was in hospital for the start and end of the trip; it has become harder to deal with over the past year.” On top of the hours of breathing exercises she has to do every day, Ms Kollmorgen takes about 40 different tablets during the day to keep her symptoms under control. Mr Spinks is raising money for Ms Kollmorgen through a GoFundMe account where all the money generated will go directly to the Kollmorgen family to assist with the cost of Jade’s medications. “I don’t have a job and I am paying for all my medications and it’s a big thing,” Ms Kollmorgen said. “I have to use Centrelink money for that so any funding is really helpful to manage all that.” “My family is not well off and it is hard to keep up and pay for all my medications so this is going to be a big help.”

Mr Spinks said he had already had great support from his own employer Hettich as well as from local businesses he has approached. “I have had great support from a lot of people both through donating funds to get me to Kokoda as well as equipment to support me in my training,” he said. “I want to give my sincere thanks to Michael Malkoun from Brighton Porsche and Brighton Infiniti, Neil Richards from Kitchen Hardware Company and Joshua Huang from W.T. Hardware. “These are the companies that have sponsored me to get to Kokoda. “I also want to give special thanks to Rays Outdoors Fountain Gate, The Athletes Foot Fountain Gate and Merrell Shoes Fountain Gate for supplying footwear and equipment for my training and the trek.” Mr Spinks is very passionate about helping Ms Kollmorgen and raising the funds she needs to have the best possible quality of life. “At my age I never thought I could do anything like this but it is amazing what you can do when you put your mind to it,” he said. “I will not fail in this and I will not fail her.” To donate to Mr Spinks’ cause, go to www.gofundme.com/jadescystic-fibrosis-fight

Fake Facebook cowards Casey City’s Councillor Rosalie Crestani wants police to have more powers to act on cybercrime, after a number of fake social media profiles posing as her posted offensive content. Cr Crestani believes the fake profiles were created in the last few months, following her support of council’s move to compulsorily acquire land in Narre Warren North. The fake profiles have used the same photo as her official councillor Facebook profile and commented or posted material that Cr Crestani says does not represent her views. The fake posts were centred around indigenous Australians, calling the first peoples “lazy” and “inconsiderate”, a view that Cr Crestani said was not her own. “The posts were attacking the Aboriginal community and I was horrified,” Cr Crestani said. “It started around the decision for Mr Foy’s land; it popped up around this time and this is probably a left-wing attack,” she said. While the fake profiles have been taken down now, Cr Crestani says she would like to see some changes in the way online bullying is dealt with. “I would like to see a proper call centre for Facebook or what-haveyou to speak to real human beings,” she said. “I would also like police to have their hands on the IP addresses of those that set up the accounts and for police to have real teeth to deal with cyber bullying that comes from outside of Australia.” Cyber security expert at Monash University Dr Lennon Chang said once an impostor account had dam-

aged someone’s reputation, despite it being a form of identity theft, there wasn’t a lot of action police could take. “For the imposter, it is definitely a crime,” Dr Chang said. “Stealing someone’s profile and causing damage - it is definitely a crime but the issue is it is not easy to investigate and discover who has done it.” “Police can’t do a lot here, as the damage has been caused; what we can do in this situation is we can tell people it was fake and try to ask Facebook or the social media website to stop disseminating the messages.” Dr Chang said the creation of and damage caused by impostor accounts were the responsibility of the social media company to prevent, rather than the police to investigate. “It is more about corporate responsibility; the responsibility of the company to keep its clients safe rather than the police to investigate after.” Meanwhile, Cr Crestani has said she is disappointed with the way people have chosen to engage with her and says if someone has an issue they would like to raise, they should do it in person. “I think it is very cowardly - I don’t want to instigate violence or anything but if you have something to say, come and say it to my face,” she said. “Don’t try to wreck my reputation and standing with the community.” “People are welcome to call or contact me however and I would be grateful for the opportunity to try and fix it if it is not me.”

Letters Bunjil's in the road Casey Council are a joke. They won't spend any money on laying asphalt down on O'Grady Road, Hallam, to get rid of the dust (News, 9 February) but they can spend millions on building Bunjil Place, which a lot of people have no interest in. D. Gardner, Hampton Park.

Reasons for occupation I am writing to defend the actions of Israel in occupying lands which were the subject of a letter by John Glazebrook in your newspaper (News, 19 January). Israel has been under attack by Palestinian terrorists for quite a number of years and in my opinion Israel has the right to defend itself from the many missiles and rockets that are fired in their direction by procuring a buffer between themselves and the aggressors. As you are no doubt aware the coast is only approximately 30 to 40 kilometres from the occupied lands and if the lands were given back then the main cities of Israel and its airport would be under threat from these terrorists. That is the reason Israel has this buffer zone. John talks about the UNHRC and their resolution but let’s look at some of the members. China, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iraq. Republic of Korea and Saudi Arabia to name a few. Do you think these countries should be lecturing Israel on human rights? Being a free-thinking person it seems odd to me to condemn one nation when there are others that should be more condemned. Frank P. Rzepecki, Narre Warren South.

To the ALP It’s not enough that when it comes to acknowledging receipt of my letter, it seems to be falling on deaf ears. A standard reply comes through, generated by a heartless computer like the rest of those in the political arena. The entire political system is corrupt: “you scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours, so they both scratch“ and continue to extend the life of parliament for the period of the term and guarantee a salary for three years. The whole scenario is a fake, a charade. Get real and do something for us who elected you - the issue I have raised is of vital importance. The poor have no place to rest their heads, they rest them on the streets of the CBD. Shame on you Labor who take pride in defending the poor and upholding their needs. There is a housing crisis - who can afford average priced homes at $500,000? Not in a lifetime, do something. Australia is bleeding at the seams - the poor are helpless. A visionary can easily solve the issue of housing. It’s simple, very simple. Commandeer land over the vast tracts of land above the rail tracks. This was done in the Melbourne CBD and today is the most prized real estate - Federation Square. I urge your party to alert the Liberals to build affordable apartments. I urge your party, the people’s party which has lost touch with the warp and woof of the social fabric of society. I will not stop my correspondence until I hear of a positive proposal for construction of affordable apartments.

Head over heels for a game of cricket at Lineham Oval in Clyde. 164812 The banks have already expressed their opposition to the construction of apartments - it is disgusting that the banking industry does not care for the welfare of the poor. It’s about time that the banking industry was subjected to a Royal Commission, or very simply if the Labor Party has brains to propose far-reaching changes for control, I urge that your party proposes them through the parliamentary process. If the Liberals object to a Royal Commission, it’s time we got rid of the Royal Commission process and established a judiciary commission with more and more lay people on the commission, particularly those hurt by the banks like the farmers whose property has been seized by the banks for non-payment of loans during dry arid droughts, and all and sundry like me and you and us. The bottom line is we the people of Australia need affordable housing in the form of affordable apartments. Construction of this type of housing will generate job creation. Housing for the poor will cause a positive ripple effect on the economy and stir the economic growth of the country. Rudd’s policy extricated Australia out of the economic morass, into being the first country to triumph over the recession. I appeal to the Labor Party of Australia to address the issues raised by me. I appeal to the social justice movements of the various religious groups who claim to stand up for the sermon on the mount of Jesus Christ to act on those virtuous recommendations which will make them fighters for the needs of the poor. Economic theorists whole-heartedly subscribe to the economic theory that when a country creates positive policies which enhance the benefit of the poor, the entire country is enriched. Can the rich do without the poor? They can’t - we are all in it and part of the whole. The bottom line of this letter is: please build more affordable apartments. These are not the vituperations of an aimless person, but someone aho has stooped to sit on the pavement of the Melbourne CBD, share a meal and drink a beer gifted by a bleeding heart, with a squatter and listened to his sorry tale of woe - his family story of being ousted by the banks for non-payment of his mortgage and his house seized by the bank. Affordable housing is a must - do something. Milroy Martyn, Endeavour Hills.

Fighting crime Thankyou for Victoria Stone-Meadows’ article (News, 9 February) ‘Citizens against crime’ highlighting City of Casey councillor Amanda Stapledon’s intended ‘Law and Order’ forum at the Cranbourne Bowls Club on Wednesday 15 February. I’m convinced that there should be a far greater emphasis on crime prevention in the first place and all citizens should face the outcomes of all crime if caught and convicted. All vehicle drivers know that if they exceed speed limits, and are caught and convicted, the outcome is at least a fine, so why not crime? There seems to be a greater emphasis on rehabilitation of offenders than that of its prevention. What if the penalty for murder or importing hard drugs was to have both knees and elbows smashed with a baseball bat, then hung upside down for 24 hours, then by the neck if still alive? Harsh? No, they should have known the outcome if caught and convicted, therefore

Ray’s

say

Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS human rights would not be an issue. Car theft, breaking and entering, and stealing when being armed, the restoration cost of any damage caused would have to be paid by the convicted offender(s). There possibly aren’t words in our dictionary which could describe the heartache and loss of a loved one brutally murdered, so why not inflict immense pain on the convicted offender? Likewise the possible time and going without to buy a car, the possible years taken to build up a business, the memories of loss losing those stolen possessions and the years of continued trauma after having a gun pointed at you or a knife held inches from your throat, so why not a permanent reminder of the difficulty and heartache and traumas conflicted on the convicted? I very strongly believe if similar outcomes were inflicted on the convicted lawbreakers and were demanded by the citizens of Australia there would be an immediate decline in crime. Ross River Virus fears mosquito-borne diseases.” Practical measures advised by health professionals to reduce the risk of contracting the virus include: Ensure that insect screens fitted to doors and windows on houses are in good condition; Wearing long, light coloured loose-fitting clothing and use a suitable insect repellent containing picaridin or DEET; and Getting rid of stagnant water around the home or campsites as it is used as mosquito breeding grounds. Onset of symptoms may become apparent two to 14 days after a mosquito bite and people experiencing symptoms should seek medical attention from their GP or their local hospital.

‘Crappy playground’ upgrade By Victoria Stone-Meadows Blind Bight residents hope they are one step closer to having an upgraded playground and new skate park after a petition was tabled to Casey councillors on 20 December. Balla Balla Ward councillor Geoff Ablett tabled the 72 signature long petition at the last council meeting of 2016 and councillors agreed to consider funding for the project in the 2017/18 budget. Blind Bight resident and head petitioner Bob O’Connell said the council hearing the voice of the people was a great victory for the town. “It’s great news,” he said. “Our problem is that we don’t have transport like Berwick or Endeavour Hills where kids can hop on a bus and get to somewhere; we are not in the same boat.”

The call for a new youth entertainment park would see an adventure playground built in Blind Bight with the inclusion of a skate park. Mr O’Connell said the young people of Tooradin and Warneet have some entertainment but Blind Bight has been forgotten about. “Tooradin has two good parks and Warneet has one but we are a bit like the lost partner,” he said. “We would like to see our current playground on Anchorage Drive upgraded to be similar to one with slides and everything like at Tooradin.” The Casey City Council 2017/18 draft budget is expected to be realised in late May with the budget made final in the middle of the year. Blind Bight resident Julie O’Connell said a new playground and skate park at Blind

Bight should be a top priority for the council. Ms O’Connell cited the population sizes of neighbouring Tooradin and Warneet as a reason they have been provided with entertainment for young children. “The 2011 census has the population of Tooradin at 1359 and that gives them multiple playgrounds, footy grounds, tennis courts, netball courts and a skate park,” she said. “The Warneet population is 466 and they get newly surfaced tennis courts, a footy/soccer ground, BMX and walking track, and a new senior’s playground. “Blind Bight has a population of 1238 and we get one old crappy playground near a sewage pumping block. “Our playground and skate park should be a top priority.”

WESTERNPORT CHILD CARE CENTRE John Foy has rebuffed Casey's offer of a new hot water Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS system. 164864 Casey councillors voted unanimously on a dramatic, last-minute backdown at a meeting on 7 February. Mr Foy said he was still puzzled as to who and what was behind the stunning reversal, but was thankful for the stoic support of media and neighbours. He singled out the help of residents Marlene Kane, Sharon Richardson, Peterine Smulders and Sandra Velius. “I just want to get the message out there to thank every-

body who helped me. They’ve made somebody sit up and listen. “I would have liked to have been a fly on the wall at that (special council) meeting.” Mayor Sam Aziz said he didn’t regret offering the “goodwill gesture”. “It was up to him whether to accept it. “We still extend to Mr Foy our goodwill and best wishes for the future.”

Fresh from defeating Casey’s push to acquire his property, Narre Warren North resident John Foy has knocked back the council’s “goodwill” offer of a complimentary hot water system. The council had offered a replacement hot-water system out of recognition of the stress caused to Mr Foy - who told Star News that “I can’t be bought off”. Mr Foy said the system burst several weeks ago “regardless of whether there was an issue with the council”. “The ratepayers are going to be paying for it, not the councillors,” Mr Foy said. “They’ll just be taking it out of the ratepayers’ money. “If I accept it, what does that make me?” Mr Foy said he’d never sought compensation from the council. “I just didn’t want the bloody (public acquisition) overlay. I’m not looking for anything else.” Invoking the classic Aussie film The Castle, Mr Foy was backed by many neighbours and Facebook warriors in his battle to preserve his 34-acre home and its bird-rich gardens and wetland.

Residents of Casey are being warned to take extra care to protect themselves from mosquito bites after the blood-borne illness Ross River Virus was detected in the area. Six residents in Casey and Frankston have been diagnosed with the illness which is carried and transferred by mosquitoes. Symptoms for Ross River Virus include fever, headache, aching muscles and/or joints, and fatigue. The illness can be diagnosed by a doctor by the symptoms, while a blood test is recommended to confirm if the illness has been contracted. While there is no cure for Ross River Virus, the arthritislike symptoms of the illness

will dissipate on their own and pain management is used to treat symptoms while patients recover. Victoria’s Chief Health Officer, Professor Charles Guest said the recent weather conditions have caused the virus to pop up where it isn’t usually detected. “None of the people diagnosed with Ross River Virus have travelled to areas where mosquitoes carrying the virus are usually found,” he said. “Recent rain and relatively warm weather has created conditions ideal for mosquito breeding and we have seen a significant increase in mosquito numbers as a result.” “Taking measures to avoid bites is a critical step to protect yourself and your family against

Kathy Dunscombe with Makai, Jonelle and Aspen Colabufalo are ready for the Walk to Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS Remember later this month. 164729

Walking for their cause By Victoria Stone-Meadows The annual Walk to Remember, hosted by the Jared Dunscombe Fund, is on again this February with everyone encouraged to participate and donate to the cause. The annual walk is held in memory of Jared Dunscombe, a Cranbourne Rotary Club member whose life was tragically cut short at the age of 31 in 2013. Mr Dunscombe was killed when he fell from his bike and was struck by a truck and trailer travelling in the same direction while taking part in the Rotary fund-raising event - Ride to Conference. The Walk to Remember encourages anyone who has lost someone close to them to take the time to walk the Lysterfield Park Hallam North Walking Tracks and remember those no longer with us. Through the Walk to Re-

member, the fund raises money to donate to a charity that Mr Dunscombe would have believed in. This year the fund is raising money to help Victorian-based assistance dog training group Righteous Pups to fund the construction of two new training facilities. Mr Dunscombe’s sister Jonelle Colabufalo said Righteous Pups was the kind of organisation her brother would have supported. “He was a dog lover and we always had dogs growing up; he even had his own little Jack Russell,” she said. “But it’s the helping young people that these dogs do; that’s the kind of organisation he supported.” The training facilities that the money will go towards include one for diabetes alert dogs and one for Righteous Pup’s

Bridging the Gaps program. The Bridging the Gaps Program is for children 11 to 18-year-olds who have been identified with significant educational or psychological risks and behavioural problems. “The youth come and work with the dog trainers and a counsellor for one day per week for 12 months and the results they are having from this program in turning around the lives of these young people is amazing,” Ms Colabufalo said. As well as the fund-raising walk, the pups from the program will be on hand to meet the walkers and there will be a number of children’s activities as well. The Walk to Remember will be held on Saturday 18 February and to register or find out more about the Jared Dunscombe Fund visit www.jaredfund.org.au.

Maternal care a double act Four sets of twins were born at St John of God Berwick Hospital within a two-week period this year. The maternity team has enjoyed the novelty of caring for these special babies. It has been a busy time as the team continues to prepare for the move to the new hospital

at Kangan Drive, Berwick, later this year. Maternity services will expand with a larger Special Care Nursery, six birthing suites and additional rooms. The hospital runs tours of the Gibb Street Maternity Ward each Tuesday at 8pm and on Sundays at 2pm.

And information sessions, run by an obstetrician, are held on the first Sunday of each month at 2pm. Call 9709 1400 to book. Visit www.sjog.org.au/berwickmaternity for more information.

What will happen to the current Gibb Street hospital? We will relocate all services currently located at Gibb St to the new hospital in Kangan Drive. The Gibb Street facility will temporarily close whilst it undergoes a redevelopment of it’s own. The facility will be transformed into a Rehabilitation Hospital that will open in mid-2018. Will there be a cost associated with car parking at the new hospital? Yes. Prices will be similar to Casey Hospital car parking fees. What will happen to Stephenson House when the hospital moves? Our Consulting Suites and Pathology Laboratory will be relocated to the new Hospital. This creates an opportunity for new services in this facility.

Will the new hospital have an Emergency Department? Not in this stage. Future planning has considered the addition of an ED. Have another question? Email us at info.berwick@sjog.org.au

Introducing your

School Principal a multi-ethnic student community in a context of Christian love and care. As a Christian school we are intentional about ensuring students have a living

Our connections in the local community are reflected by our college core values of Respect, Learning and Working Together. It is these values that motivate us to ensure that our curriculum offerings, classroom practice and the educational and career pathways on offer to our students are second to none. Indeed, our primary focus is on creating the environment, resources and subject offering that provide all students with an effective pathway in life on completing their schooling. We pride ourselves on being able to offer the broadest possible range of programs and experiences for our students, whether that be through sport, music, our broadly based VCE offerings, VCAL and our extensive VET programs.

We aim for all families, students and staff to understand and follow the shared values of: Respect, Resilience, Service and Excellence. We do this by intentionally encouraging these values through our

Welcome to the 2017 School Year I extend a warm welcome to all in our community. This year our Annual Theme “After Much Debate Peter Stood Up” calls on our students to stand up and be counted. It is a calling that aims to inspire our students to have confidence to strive for the best in themselves and challenges them to make a difference in the local community and the larger world in which we all live. This aligns with our school motto “Be Not Afraid” and our College vision where, “As a Catholic community, we aspire to lead in faith, guide with love and inspire through learning”. In 2016 140 Year 12 students, 137 students were awarded their VCE. 22 successfully completed their VCAL. Our Dux was our Environment Captain, Will Veenman with an ATAR score of 96.02. Will has successfully gained a place at Monash University to study Science. Overall our median study score remained steady at 27 with 2.1% of students achieving a study score of 40 or more. Explicit goals have been set to raise the bar in 2017. This will be supported by such programs as the VCE Study Hub and whole school roll-up for the last three weeks of the academic year. Following many years of faithful service by Rob Bray (Executive Principal) and Steve McAllister (Pakenham Campus Principal), Chairo has welcomed two new leaders for 2017. Simon Matthews will oversee all campuses as Executive Principal. After graduating from the Victorian College of the Arts and performing with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Simon studied teaching and pursued a career in early childhood education and school leadership. Most recently, he was the Executive Director of Christian Schools Tasmania for nine years. Pete Wells holds a degree in Psychology and a Master of Educational Leadership, and is pleased to be taking up the role of Pakenham Campus Principal. He previously taught at Chairo before taking on the role of Head of School in an International Baccalaureate school in Indonesia. Outside of his work in education, Pete is an award-winning novelist. Both Simon and Pete are excited about continued innovation and development at the school, but are equally committed to the longstanding mission of Chairo: to provide excellence in Christ-centred education in partnership with families within a caring Christian community. They hope to see students experience a nurturing and challenging environment, develop their gifts and become men and women of godly character. With modern facilities in a pleasant rural environment, a friendly school culture and a host of co-curricular activities, Chairo provides a dynamic learning environment. For further information, visit www.chairo.vic.edu.au.

With talented, well regarded and highly qualified Christian teachers who understand children, Maranatha students have the opportunity to learn, develop, serve, grow and excel by participating in a rigorous, challenging and engaging curriculum at either of our two well-resourced Junior Schools at Officer and Doveton or our highly regarded Middle and Senior School at Endeavour Hills.

In order for young people to succeed in an increasingly complex environment, children need a high quality education; to be taught skills to achieve success, and to think critically, enabling them to become good decision-makers, responsible global citizens and lifelong learners.

Hampton Park Secondary College in 2017, celebrates 31 years of providing dedicated educational services to our local community. We remain very much committed to ensuring that our community has the best educational opportunities the College is able to provide, ensuring our students and their achievement are the core business that drives the College.

Koo Wee Rup Secondary College is acknowledged as an excellent educational facility within a caring school environment. We are committed to providing an inclusive and sustainable learning culture in which all our students develop the skills and personal qualities necessary to participate positively and confidently in a changing global community. Our ability to tailor programs to meet the individual needs of students in achieving their personal best is underpinned by our pursuit of excellence in education and is reflected by our college values: • Respect • Responsibility • Integrity • Personal Best In choosing to be part of the Koo Wee Rup Secondary College community, students are committing to six years of secondary education and to demonstrating behaviours which are conducive to learning and reflect a commitment to the college values. The subjects on offer encourage all students to do their best and are complemented by a diverse range of programs in music, drama, photography, sport and many other co curricular activities. Pastoral care encompasses all activities and develops strong relationships between staff and students that is nurtured in our House and Learning Community structure and is evident in all we undertake. As a medium sized secondary school we are proud of our ability to strengthen the critical partnership between the teachers, parents and the student which is vital to a young person’s success. LIVING LIFE AT THE TOP FROM PAGE 1 LIFE’S better at the top say residents of Timbertop Estate, which is now home to more than 250 families. The Officer estate, which opened in 2012, now includes a two hectare park and the Timber Mill Cafe, and will soon offer a Montessori childcare centre, which is currently under construction. Prospective buyers can also visit the Display Village and explore home designs from more than 20 of Australia’s top builders. What really sets Timbertop apart from other estates is the tight-knit community that has grown as a result of the Timbertop Residents’ Group. The group organises regular events to promote friendship between neighbours including Christmas, Easter and Halloween events, moonlight cinema nights, wine and cheese nights, and a fitness club. “If you have a look at society today, most people living in estates might know their neighbours either side but don’t really get to know other people,” said Resident Group President Stephen Birch. “With the Timbertop Residents Group, we’re building a friendly environment where people can get to know each other and

feel safe.” The new park has also put Timbertop on the map as a family destination for the Officer area. Hicks Reserve, which was officially opened by the land’s former owners the Hicks family and Mayor Brett Owen in January, includes a barbecue and picnic area, viewing platform, playground equipment and giant slide, walking tracks and a kickabout area, which is currently under construction. Resident Jeff Craig and his family love the mix of country and convenience that the estate offers. “It’s very open, big spaces, great walking tracks. It’s within close proximity to schools and shopping centres, but you don’t feel like you’re living in the middle of suburbia,” Jeff said. Timbertop’s latest stages, the Treetop and Hilltop releases, feature some of the best views in Officer, perched at the top of the estate. There is a range of block sizes from 604 to 1059 square metres to suit families large and small. For more information on living at the top and to find the perfect block visit timbertopestate.com.au.

Demons win was do-or-die By Nick Creely

Paxman was once again stellar for the Dees, registering 15 disposals and a telling goal, while Daisy Pearce was once again industrious with her ability to move freely through traffic. But the stirring win may come at a cost, with Meg Downie seriously concussed after a heavy, late hit to the jaw from Magpies forward Sophie Casey, and is likely to be scrutinised by the tribunal. Downie was tapping the ball forward with her head hunched before being cleaned up by Casey, and was stretchered off the ground in front of concerned spectators. Stinear said that Downie appeared to be ok, but is unlikely to feature next week as she recovers from concussion. “She’s been cleared of any serious damage, but still has a heavy concussion - thankfully we have good medical staff on hand so fingers-crossed she continues to improve,” he said. The win leaves the De-

AFL WOMEN'S LEAGUE REVIEW - ROUND 2 Melbourne has recorded their first AFLW victory, comfortably knocking off a disappointing Collingwood side by 19-points on Saturday night. With both sides coming into the round without a win, it was essentially a do-ordie clash, and at half-time, it seemed the Pies were going to belt the Dees into submission, taking an early 19-point lead. The Demons struggled to gain any control over the contest early, with sloppy ballmovement and an inability to convert plaguing them early. But whatever coach Mick Stinear said to his troops at half-time worked, with the Demons bringing a renewed energy to the contest. The Demons found their mojo, moving the ball with ease, piling on six goals to zero, running out clear-winners. Last week’s star Karen

Stinear said it was pleasing to see his group rebound from a bitterly disappointing performance last week. “It was good to see them play the brand of footy that we have trained for - it’s a new group and we are starting to really come together,” he said. “We have a certain style of footy we want to play - I think when the chips were down we had nothing to lose, and it just started to click and

we started to believe. “The positive for us is that now we know what it feels like to be a winning team they’ll be wanting to replicate that more often than not. “Last week’s loss was a pretty emotional one and took its toll, so it was good to see the group bounce back.” Melbourne will head across to Whitten Oval to face the Western Bulldogs next Saturday night at 7.40pm. Dingoes win stuns Eagles By Nick Creely DDCA TURF 1 REVIEW - ROUND 9 (Day 2) Dingley continues to shock and amaze, and have pulled off one of the wins of the season, knocking off the powerful Cranbourne side in stunning fashion. In a week full of triumph for the Eagles, having won on the famed MCG in the Regional Big Bash last Wednesday, the Dingoes made them look secondrate in a bid to make a shock finals appearance. After amassing 195 off the back of Ryan McLean (61) last week, it was time for another man to step up - Andrew Dalby (4/32) then bowled one of the spells of the season, knocking the Eagles off for just 129. Star Eagle Matt Chasemore (52) was virtually a lone-hand, with skipper Steven Spoljaric (4) falling cheaply and the others failing to provide much resistance. The form of Berwick in the last three matches would have any opposition quivering in their boots, and after powerfully dismantling North Dandenong, are eyeing a top-two spot. Following last week’s commanding first-innings, the Bears flayed some quick runs, to push them to 7/251 before declaring - Jarrod Armitage (41), James Wilcock (31 not out) and Jack Phillips (13 not out) all continued on the momentum with the bat. But it was the Maroons that showed some grit later in the day, denying the Bears an outright victory, batting 70 overs to finish on 8/138 - Zafar Sheikh (32 from 120 balls) showed great composure in the middle-order. Armitage (3/37) was once again stellar, while Wilcock (2/31) and Jarrod Goodes (1/17) threatened to clinch an important result. The season of Heinz-Southern Districts is beginning to slip away, falling disappointingly to a Mordialloc unit

Janaka Liyanabadalge guided the Magpies to a breakthrough victory. 163321 now certain to feature in finals action. After posting a less than secure 124 last week, the Bloodhounds resumed play at 2/43, and lost an early wicket, before Stuart Squires (44), Damith Mapa Ralage (21) and Leon Kennedy (72 not out) got the visitors home.

Lee Brown (3/64) continued his strong form with another strong display, while Kaushyla Weeraratne (2/24) also threatened with the ball. It’s been five months in the making, but finally Narre Warren have a win next to their name - surviving an early

scare to knock off fellow cellar-dweller Parkfield. And it was their star all-rounder Janaka Liyanabadalge (77) that stole the show, compiling yet another classy half-century as the Magpies crossed the Bears six wickets down.

Liyanabadalge was well supported by Damien Gamage (23), while with the ball, Matthew Aslett (3/40) and Shane Bell (3/35) did all they could. Finishing on 9/168 off 88 overs, the game was called off about an hour earlier. From the beginning of day one, the contest between Hallam-Kalora Park and Springvale South was destined to have serious ramifications for one side. The Bloods, who kept the Hawks to 7/247, would have strode to the crease with the utmost confidence of knocking the total off with ease, considering the quality they possess with the bat. However, now the Bloods must face the prospect of missing out on finals altogether, after falling away by 45 runs, and more importantly, out of the top four. It began smoothly enough with a string of solid partnerships, but each time the Bloods looked likely to run away, the Hawks halted them in their tracks and took a wicket. The Hawks ended the match, bowling the visitors out for 202, with no player really going on with it and posting a big score - Mitchell Forsyth was the top-scorer with 36. The effort of Dandenong West all season cannot be questioned; however it was a matter of class that saw Buckley Ridges easily overcome the potential wooden-spooners. After the Bucks pierced their way to 7/279 last week, the Bulls entered the day’s play at 0/7. Despite putting in a noble effort with the blade, the Bulls were rolled for 193, with Greg Siwes (53) playing a strong knock at the top, and Jake Weeks (37) providing some excitement. Daniel Watson (3/14) and Wes Nicholas (3/48) controlled the tempo for the most part in a fairly comprehensive performance.

Eyeing off a place in the finals Anita’s crackerjack win By Nick Creely VIC PREMIER CRICKET REVIEW - ROUND 16 (Day 1) Casey-South Melbourne is starting to resemble a team built for finals, and after carving their highest score of the season, are one step closer to cementing their place in the eight for good. Coming into the round with the pressure of finals on their shoulders, Lachlan Sperling elected to bat on a belter of a pitch at Casey Fields. Their opposition, Kingston Hawthorn, are sitting outside the eight, but still a chance of sneaking their way in to the finals with a strong win. But six hours later, the Swans strode off the turf in a commanding and imperious position, flaying the ball to all parts to finish the day on 8/356. After a watchful start from Luke Manders and Devin Pollock, debutant bowler Matthew North broke through, finding the edge of Pollock to leave the Swans at 1/32. Enter Michael Wallace, who combined flair with natural aggression, and combined with Manders, a compact and traditional opening batsman, started to comfortably find runs all over the ground. The pair added 118, before Manders (66) was perhaps unfairly adjudged LBW off James Miller (2/47). But the runs didn’t stop flowing as Sperling (80) entered the crease, and despite starting in a watchful manner, looked assured right from the outset. Wallace (95) was then denied a maid-

Lachlan Sperling made an attacking half-century for the Swans. 164743 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS en Premier century after falling to Yasiru Herath (2/70), with the score at an imposing 3/197. A few quick wickets halted the Swans’ momentum briefly, before Brendan Rose (26), Nathan Lambden (23 not out) and Dylan Hadfield (23) lifted them to the competition’s highest score of the day. Swans coach Brian Keogh was pleased at his side’s intent, but stressed that only half the job is done, with the pitch well suited to batting. “You’d always rather have 350 instead of having to chase them - it was a good wicket and a fast outfield but we played well,” he said. “We probably had our noses in front of all three sessions which was really pleasing, Wally’s (Michael Wallace) innings was excellent, Lachie Sperling batted really well and Luke Manders played well for his 60 odd, and then for

Lamby (Nathan Lambden) to come in and hit three late sixes was great. “Well, 300 was about a par score, and to finish on 360 was pleasing for us. “We want to make sure we do plenty of catching work this week - they are a really great batting side so we need to make sure we catch well - 360 doesn’t mean a lot unless we bowl them out.” Keogh heaped special praise on his two biggest contributors, Lachlan Sperling and Michael Wallace, who both made breakthrough knocks. “Wally went from 85 to 95 really quickly, and then went for a shot that was probably there but obviously he didn’t hit it clean enough - it’s always disappointing to get out in the 90s but he was pleased - he is one of the most popular blokes at the club because he is such a great clubman, so everyone was so pleased for him - he really capitalised and batted beautifully,” he explained. “Last week against Greenvale, Sperlo was the pick of the batters on both days, and I knew a big score was around the corner - he’s a class player and on Saturday he took control of the innings.” Looking ahead to next Saturday, Keogh expects an aggressive Kingston batting side to show up, but backs his side to get the job done. “Looking at the ladder, they obviously need the six points, so we expect them to be aggressive - we’ll declare on our score and we imagine they will look to chase the target down,” he said. “We will go hard and expect a great day of cricket that will most likely go down to the wire.”

Lara trainer Anita Courts, 27, has cracked her first Country Cup win with her kennel star Crackerjack Choc in the $67,000 Backman’s Greyhound Supplies Cranbourne Cup (520m) last Saturday night. Paying a staggering $26 for the win from box two, not even Anita gave her 32-kilo chaser much of a chance against a line-up that consisted of three Jason Thompson trained greyhounds. “I really didn’t think I would be standing here,” Anita said with tears of joy at the post-race presentation. “Jason Thompson had some amazing greyhounds in the field, and to beat the likes of the Big Flood ($2.30 favourite), who has to be one of the most exciting young greyhounds at the moment, is a credit to Crackerjack Choc.” The son of Cosmic Rumble and Lizzie’s Memory utilised box two, staying within a couple of lengths behind the leading Archie Fields (box six) and Don’t Kid Me (box seven). Strength prevailed as Crackerjack Choc proved just how important it is to have a big motor over Cranbourne’s 520-metre journey. Crackerjack Choc eventually won by less than half a length over the Gerard O’Keeffe-trained Archie Fields ($41.70), with a further five lengths to the third-placed Steven White-trained Don’t Kid Me ($15.70). The trio combined for a whop-

Crackerjack Choc is now a winner of 14 races from 56 starts and he doubled his career earnings to $93,660 following his biggest win to date. “We only have a small team but we work hard and this is the greatest reward,” Anita said. Although unlucky in the Cranbourne Cup, Jason Thompson had one reason to smile, that being a win by his exciting stayer, Burn One Down. Burn One Down took out the second feature on the night, the Victoria Cup which is held over the 699-metre distance, stopping the clock at 40.730sec.

Three teams trying HAMPTON PARK BOWLS The bowls season is drawing toward a finals showdown and Hampton Park has three of its five teams vying for positions. Midweek Division 3 is guaranteed a berth, while Saturday’s Divisions 4 and 6 are just on the right side of the four in fourth positions. On Tuesday, Hampton Park’s midweek Division 1 scored another near miss, this time against Dandenong Club. Playing away and although they won one rink, they only went down by eight shots overall. Val Moore, Jen Sherry, John Nunan and Helen Lambert drew away late in the game to win 22-15, but Marion Battaglia, Denise Eastick, Neville Hendrie and Andrew Brandolin (14-17) and Lou Soligo, Toni Sutton, Geoff Ladner and Christine Hendrie (16-28) both lost. Hampton Park (1) 2-52 lost to Dandenong Club (1) 14-60. In second place, midweek Division 3 was at home against third placed Oakleigh. A win would guarantee the Parkers not only a finals berth, but a home final. Rhonda

Diaper, June Damon, Brian Diaper and Geoff Ampt led the way with a strong 28-6 win, supported by Stuart Tokely, Gwen Clough, Peter Hayden and Heather Naismith who won 2815. Janice Collins, Ann Westwell, Ian Kitt and Ray Wood fought hard for a 12-23 loss. Hampton Park (2) 14-68 defeated Oakleigh (1) 2-44. On Saturday, Division 1 travelled to Ringwood for yet another loss. The only winning rink was Geoff Ladner, Sean McDonald, Peter Hayden and Zak Storm (20-16). Shane Hardy, Andrew Brandolin, Ian Bartlett and Warwick Hardy were close (20-22) while Mark Paton, John Nunan, Chris Barnes and Steve Barnes (10-21) and Clint Mills, Christine Hendrie, Neville Hendrie and Larry Simpson (14-26) both lost. Hampton Park (1) 2-64 lost to Ringwood (1) 16-85. Division 4 was at Pound Road against fellow finals contender Cranbourne RSL, and the Parkers were victorious. Vince Kovacic, Aaron Ottaway, Rob Woff and Ron Beverley

led the way with a convincing 30-15 win, while Trevor Harbright, John Wright, Stan Hatch and Ken Cobden fought back from a near disaster to win 23-17. Val Moore, Janice Collins, Jen Sherry and Geoff Ampt had their noses in front at the right time to win 25-22, but Denise Eastick, Jim Westwell, Helen Lambert and Heather Naismith faltered late in the game to lose 15-28. Hampton Park (2) 16-93 defeated Cranbourne RSL (2) 2-82. Division 6 travelled to the treacherous Ferntree Gully carpet, and came home with an “honourable” eight shot loss. Dave Isted, Richard Pallett, Bill Webb and Toni Sutton were the only winners (17-12) while Val Simpson, Bill Holden, Gavin Wilson and Ian Kitt (17-19), Gerry Cox, Craig Richards, Marion Battaglia and Stuart Tokely (23-26) and Gary Perrin, Lou Soligo, Brian Diaper and Ray Wood (14-22) just missed out. Hampton Park (3) 2-71 lost to Ferntree Gully (5) 16-79.

June Damon played a key role in Hampton Park’s win over Oakleigh.

Rob Woff helped Hampton Park to a big win over Cranbourne.

CRANBOURNE BOWLS All three sides playing on Saturday had exciting wins while the ladies team recorded a great victory against tough opposition to give Cranbourne a clean sweep of wins for the week. Skip Doug Boggie and his team were on fire winning by 19 shots. An outstanding game played by both Doug Boggie and Lynne Wood who were in hot form. After the game Doug said: “Lynne Wood played an exceptional game which made it tough for the opposition. “During the game I was a little worried with the other rinks falling behind but they managed to fight back hard and in the end gave us a must win victory by three shots against Vermont South. “This win now makes us equal on points with Vermont South on the ladder.” The second side playing at home defeated Glen Waverley, which is currently in the top four on the ladder, by six shots. Graeme Wood was called up as skip at the last minute and recorded an eight-shot win. Graeme was modest after the game and praised his team, especially his third Chris Griffiths. However, talking to his team after the game they all agreed that Graeme was the star of the day. Skip Peter De Lisle also recorded an eight-shot victory. Peter was relieved after the game after having a tough game the week before. Skip Tony Collins was carrying an injury but managed to limp through the game and made sure Cranbourne won the day. The third side recorded a five-shot victory against Murrumbeena with an outstanding performance by skip Frank Male and his team of Marty Tankard, Bill Sheriff and Brian Turton who won by nine shots.

Bulls under Bright yoke By David Nagel Only the menacing shadow cast by Cardinia (177) champion Dwayne Doig can stop Kooweerup (1/14) from rubber-stamping top spot in the West Gippsland Cricket Association Premier Division this Saturday. The star off-spinner has already made a key breakthrough -that of Demons’ gun Chris O’Hara (12) - as the Bulls look to defend a modest total compiled against the most frugal attack in the competition. Several Bulls gained a start, but Ricky Campbell (47), Alex Nooy (28) and Luke Turner (26) will be kicking themselves after not producing an innings of real importance. Paul Bright (3/19 off 9) was the pick of the quicks for the Demons, while brother Matt Bright (4/40 off 15) and skipper Mark Cooper (2/38 off 17) put their slow-bowling combination to good use. O’Hara -not happy after his latein-the-day dismissal- said it was terrific to see the two Brights back in the side after spending the early part of the season in B Grade. “It’s great to see them back in the side,” he said. “It’s a real plus for us to see so many players stepping up. The game is on an even keel at the minute, but if we bat well and bat out the overs we should get the runs.” Fellow premiership contender Pakenham (5/394cc) posted a massive score against Pakenham Upper/ Toomuc in front of a huge Pink Ladies Day crowd at Toomuc Reserve. The Lions had some key players spend crucial time in the middle with Zac Chaplin (79), Chris Smith (75), Rob Elston (70), Chris Savage

Matt ‘Mushy’ Bright took this absolute screamer off his brother Paul’s bowling to remove Bulls skipper Neil Barfuss cheaply. 164741 Pictures: STEWART CHAMBERS (59), Jason Williams (49 not out) and Dom Paynter (23) all making stellar contributions. The Lions paced their innings perfectly according to Elston. “One of the things that we’ve pushed a lot is how important it is to only be one or two (wickets) down at tea because it really sets you up to make hay while the sun shines after that,” he said. Tooradin (4/180) also imposed its will on a competition cellar-dweller, smashing aside Emerald (164) in one-sided contest at Tooradin.

Cal O’Hare (3/41 and 82 not out) reminded all and sundry of his exquisite all-round talents, while Kade Burns (2/52), Matt Welsh (2/15) and Russ Lehman (36) all performed at key junctures. AJ Walker (45), Michael Nell (31) and Nick Hill (31) fought hard for the Bombers and will need to do so again this Saturday to avoid outright defeat. And Merinda Park (227) looks set to leapfrog Upper Beaconsfield (0/1) into fifth position after a strong batting display on the weekend.

The Cobras had key contributions from openers Dan McCalman (39) and Dylan Cuthbertson (26) but still found themselves in trouble at 6/130. But skipper Danny Diwell (46) stood tall, repelling the best of Jonathon Caderamanpulle (6/65 off 20) to share a 69-run stand with Gagandeep Sharma (26) to lead his side from the doldrums. Bath Perera (2/19) also tasted success for the Maroons who will resume with Kyle Gibbs (0) and Rukshan Carim (1) at the crease.

Cricket carnival is fun for everyone The 2017 Melbourne Stars All Abilities Cricket Carnival will be held at Casey Fields on Sunday 19 February. Bringing together cricketers with all abilities from across Victoria to play at the one venue, the carnival will feature Ten Over Tonk and Super League divisions. The Ten Over Tonk is a participation format that seeks to give cricketers an equal opportunity at batting, bowling and fielding using a plastic ball, whereas cricketers wanting to participate in a more competitive setting can play hard ball cricket in the Super League’s Ten10 format. The Melbourne All Abilities Cricket Association (MAACA) will also have its grand final at the Carnival, commencing at 9.30am. Melbourne Stars CEO Clint Cooper said the Melbourne Stars All Abilities Cricket Carnival is a great showcase of why cricket is a game for all Victorians. “It’s a great and spirited atmosphere and we look forward to seeing as many locals and fans as possible at Casey Fields. The carnival continues to build momentum and we’re proud to get behind the day and support this annual event," Cooper said.

From left: Wayne Cornwall, Nick Bruin, Gareth Alsem and Glenn Ruddle will all represent Cranbourne at the Picture: GARY SISSONS carnival. 164238 Melbourne Stars player Seb Gotch will be in attendance to meet participants and fans, along with giveaways and an appearance by Stars’ mascot Starman.

There will be a special presentation to launch the carnival at 9am, with the first round of matches to commence at 9.30am. The carnival will con-

clude with the Super League Grand Final from 2.30pm with a medal and trophy presentation to follow at 4pm. The carnival is complete-

ly free to attend and is open to the entire community. Cranbourne Cricket Club has entered a team for the tournament.

 Reviews and news…

Big, bold and practical too By Alistair Kennedy It’s a bit of a stretch to call Kia the sleeping giant of the Australian automotive industry but for a company with such close links to its high-flying Korean sibling, Hyundai, it has long been something of an under-performer. That’s all changed in the last two years with back-to-back growth in sales of 20.5 per cent in 2015 and 26.5 per cent in 2016 and Kia has now moved into the top 10 of overall motor vehicles sales for the first time. This week’s test vehicle, the Sorento, is the larger of Kia’s two SUV models and it has been an important contributor in the sales growth following the arrival of its current third generation model in mid-2015. Sorento comes in four grades. In rising order of equipment and price they are Si, SLi and Platinum. Prices range from $40,990 for the petrol two-wheel-drive Si to $58,490 for the turbo-diesel AWD GT-Line. Sorento is neat and compact with a high bonnet and the characteristic Kia grille flanked by large cutouts for the foglights and eyebrow headlights topped by LED daytime running lights. Both the grille and lower air intake have an attractive honeycomb fill. The roofline flows gradually downwards from above the front seats to the rear and, while it does reduce headroom in the third row seats that’s only

Kia Sorento is a quality SUV-people mover crossover. going to be a problem in the unlikely event of adults occupying the seats. Kia Sorento is a seven-seater, effectively an SUV-people mover crossover, so outward vision is important and the side windows are large and extend all the way to the rear. Likewise the rear of the vehicle is squared-off to enable 320 litres of luggage to be carried even when all seven seats are in use. That increases t0 1077 litres with the third row seatbacks folded, and a van-like 2066 litres with the second row also folded. Standard across all three models are

roof rails and rear spoiler. SLi and Platinum add a hands-free powered tailgate and LED rear combination lights with the Platiunum getting a panoramic sunroof. The Si rides on 17-inch alloy wheels; the SLi on 18-inch alloys and Platinum and GT-Line on 19s. The latest addition to the Sorento range, the GT-Line, added in late 2016, gets chrome wheels, stainless steel side steps, red brake calipers, red leather trim, paddle shifters, LED ice cube fog lamps, chrome accented interior and GT-Line badging. Two engines are available, 3.3-litre

V6 petrol and four-cylinder 2.2-litre turbo-diesel. The V6, offered only in the 2WD models, generates 199 kilowatts of power and 318 Nm of torque at a very high 5300 rpm. The AWD Sorento models, to cater for the potential extra demands, get the diesel engine which produces 147 kW of power and a healthy 441 Nm to torque between 1750 rpm and 2750 revs. All Sorento models have a sixspeed automatic transmission. Sorento’s tech features use the the Kia audio-video navigation (AVN) system using a 7.0-inch LCD touchscreen. All models get satellite navigation with SUNA traffic information, Aux and USB input and Bluetooth functionality. Pairing is intuitive and fast.

The Si has a six-speaker audio system, higher specced models a 10-speaker premium Infinity sound system powered by an external amplifier. Both have speed dependent volume control. Sorento has a five-star safety rating from Australasian NCAP. There are six airbags, including front-to-rear curtain coverage. All models have ABS with brake assist and electronic brakeforce distribution; elctronic stability control; vehicle stability management; hill start assist; emergency stop signal; reversing camera; front and rear parking sensors and a tyre pressure monitoring system. The Platinum adds lane departure warning; smart cruise control; blindspot detection and rear cross traffic alert to the driver safety aids. The new GT-Line is the first Sorento to feature autonomous emergency braking. Entry and exit is easy with little bending and straightening requires. The front seats are large, comfortable and supportive. The middle row second row seas can slide back and forward with plenty of legroom for the tallest of adult passengers when set in the rearmost position.
