Fergie stands out

By Peter Douglas Respected Elder and active community member Dr Doseena Fergie has been awarded the Yarra Ranges Citizen of the Year.

At Yarra Ranges Council’s awards ceremony at Burrinja Cultural Centre on Australia Day, Dr Fergie was officially recognised for her dedication to her community.

Dr Fergie has been a leader within the local Indigenous community and a driving force behind the ongoing success of the Healesville Indigenous Community Services Association (HICSA).

When honouring Dr Fergie, Cr Cliff said her efforts to create positive change needed to be recognised. “Her role in assisting council to develop its reconciliation direction of ‘Indigenous Ways of Knowing and Cultural Strengthening’ has created a lasting legacy,� he said. “Doseena’s focus on placing culture at the centre of health and wellbeing for Aboriginal people and ability to view situations through an Aboriginal lens has transformed the way council works.�

Meanwhile, many citizens in the Dandenong Ranges were also awarded at the ceremony.

The major award winners included: Upwey’s Neil McLeod (Mayor’s Lifetime Achievement), Kallista’s Alex Maisey (Environmental Achiever of the Year) and the Upwey Primary School (co-winner of Ken McIntosh Memorial Award; Young Environmental Achiever of the Year).

In addition, certificate recipients included Gareth Hart (Upwey), Sarah Tebbutt (The Patch) and Sally Rutzou (Monbulk).

Mr Maisey was awarded for his dedication to understanding and preserving the Dandenong Ranges and its forests.

He grew up on the edge of the Sherbrooke Forest, and works closely with

Upon announcing the award, Cr Mike Clarke was full of praise for Mr Maisey, saying the region needs to nurture and develop his knowledge.

Health is working Works are continuing to progress well with Angliss Hospital’s $20 million expansion.

Earlier this month, the construction team were busy with the delivery of precast concrete which will be used to construct a lift shaft.

The lift shaft will house two large modern lifts suitable for transporting patients on a hospital bed, together with specialist medical equipment and staff.

Upon completion, the hospital expansion project will deliver a range of features.

These include a fourth level above the main hospital building, which will contain a 14-bed critical unit.

There will be expanded adult and paediatric short stay units on level two, with existing paediatric beds set to double.

Project and Sustainability, Zoltan Kokai, thanked staff, patiends and their families for their patience during construction.

“We are pleased to be continuing to inform our community and neighbours regarding the progress of this development, while minimising the impact of the construction on neighbourhood amenity,” he said.

Acting Angliss Hospital Chief of Clinical and Site Operations, Jenny Dempster, said she was delighted with the progress.

“We look forward to seeing the completed project, and the great benefits it will deliver to our local community,” she said.

Ms Dempster thanked the State Government for their strong support of the project.

The hospital expansion is due to be completed next year.

Letters Orientate this I have just read your article ‘Yellow articles plague bush’ (24 January, 2017), suggesting orienteers were responsible for the graffiti in Birdsland Bushland near Belgrave South.

Ms (Glenda) Wise should get her facts right before blaming a particular or-

ganisation for this vandalism.

The purpose of orienteering is to navigate simply by map and compass over a set course.

We do not leave yellow arrows at any time.

Each of our controls is in the form of an orange and white marker which is recovered after every event because they cost too much not to!

Orienteers are pretty much ‘greenies’ because we don’t leave anything behind us, especially graffiti.

We have established permanent courses in a number of parks over several years (not Birdsland) with the approval of the relevant authorities and these are used by schools, Scouts and various other groups using proper posts, with the endorse-

As for Ms Wise’s statement that permits should be required to use the area for orienteering - they always have been.

We do not go in unannounced and just run an event.

Our sport is an excellent way for young people to learn a new skill and the best standards are required to

see that it remains so.

We do not leave graffiti and never will because it is not in the parameters of our sport.

It is most unfortunate when people point the finger at a recognised worldwide sport, incorrectly, without substance or fact.

ECHO of his works

By Peter Douglas Hard-working citizen Wayne Collins has been named Cardinia Shire Council’s Citizen of the Year.

Since establishing the Emerald Centre for Youth and Outreach (ECHO) more than 30 years ago, Mr Collins has dedicated himself to improving the lives of others.

He has developed and delivered youth programs, effective disaster relief support services, as well as programs designed to strengthen family life.

Mr Collins volunteers seven days per week and is a regular speaker at

emergency planning and resilience forums.

The winners were presented with their awards at the free Australia Day 2017 awards and citizenship event and the Cardinia Cultural Centre in Pakenham.

Cardinia Shire Mayor Cr Brett Owen congratulated the winners and nominees, thanking them all for their many contributions.

“We live in the lucky country, and indeed this is true for Cardinia Shire,” he said.

“It takes people of all ages and backgrounds to bring the diverse wealth of knowledge, experience and enthusiasm that makes our commu-

nity such a welcoming and wonderful place to live and work.

“Certainly, our Australia Day nominees have all made invaluable contributions to our community.”

Meanwhile, Michael Allery was awarded Senior Citizen of the Year for his work with youth at Emerald Secondary College, as well as co-ordinating the Emerald Men’s Shed for almost a decade.

Through his involvement in the Men’s Shed, Michael has assisted many local groups including SES, RSL, Fernlea House and NHP Museum.

Cr Brett Owen also welcomed 97 new Australian citizens.

“Today, we also welcome our newest citizens,” Cr Owen said.

“Thankyou to each new citizen for choosing Cardinia Shire to be your home and for contribution you will make, and have already made, to our community.”

Another to win high praise was Mr McLeod, who, nearly 20 years ago, began leasing half of the Burrinja building as an art gallery and Uncle Neil’s Cafe.

Mr McLeod is a local artist, photographer, adventurer, documentary maker and collector of Australian Aboriginal and Papua New Guinean Art. Cr Cliff told the audience Mr McLeod has donated more than 600 items of Aboriginal and oceanic art and artefacts from Papua New Guinea, with an estimated value of $1 million to council.

Cr Cliff also spoke about the fantastic efforts of Upwey and Chum Creek primary schools, which were acknowledged for their efforts in the Platypus Education Group’s Elastic Band Challenge.

“The students had one month to collect as many hair ties, plastic rings around food products and plastic bands that threaten the platypus,” Cr Cliff said.

“They removed all elastic and plastic bands found and cut them up, so they were no longer a dangerous threat to wildlife.”

In the challenge, Upwey Primary School collected 6391 bands (76 per student) while Chum Creek Primary School collected 3759 bands (62 per student).

For Certificate of Recognition awards, Sarah Tebutt was recognised for her work in developing the Glenfern Bushland project, during which she and a team of volunteers converted bushland and weed-infested pasture into a dynamic ecosystem.

Also in attendance were Member for Eastern Victoria Region Daniel Mulino and Eildon MP Cindy McLeish.

Mr Mulino spoke of his pride for his country and the opportunities it can bring.

He told the story of his father’s journey to Australia to start a new life, when Daniel was just one year old.

Mr Mulino said his father spoke only a little English at the time.

But, through hard work, he said his father had made a great life in Australia and enjoyed 35 years working as a psychiatric nurse.

Falling tree claim hits council

By Peter Douglas A Mount Evelyn man has lodged a compensation claim against Yarra Ranges Council over a 2013 incident in which a tree split and fell on his car.

In October 2013, a man, then aged in his fifties, had been driving past Richards Reserve along Leith Road, Montrose, when the incident occurred, trapping him inside his car for more than one hour.

Emergency services eventually freed the man, before he was flown to the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

At the time of the incident, Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman Susannah Hicks said the man had severe injuries to his arms, while his condition was classed as serious but stable.

According to Maurice Blackburn Lawyers, the man suffered a significant crush injury to his right arm, multiple fractures to his left wrist and thumb, as well as several broken ribs.

Maurice Blackburn Lawyers Associate Melissa Knapic said the council had failed to provide any warning to those passing the reserve that the tree, which stood about 25m tall, posed a risk of collapsing.

“Our client has sustained multiple serious injuries that have had a huge impact on his life and require further surgeries and rehabilitation,” she said.

“We are seeking compensation for pain and suffering, and lost and future earnings on his behalf.”

The law firm said court documents alleged that Yarra Ranges Council staff had inspected the tree five days earlier and identified faults.

Also, that council recommended that the tree needed to be urgently removed, but no work was carried out between then and when the tree collapsed.

The statement of claim alleges other members of the public had previously been injured by other tree falls at the same reserve.

In a 2013 report in the ‘Mail’, Yarra Ranges Council Director of Environment and Engineering Mark Varmalis said the Yarra Ranges area was lashed with 90km/h winds.

“Council manages some five million roadside trees along the Yarra Ranges,” he said.

It was also reported Lilydale SES had responded to more than 40 calls for help during the windy weather on that day.

According to Maurice Blackburn Lawyers, Yarra Ranges Council has yet to file its defence in the case.

Meanwhile, Yarra Ranges Council manager of Risk Emergency and Community Safety, Brett Ellis, said the council could not comment on the claim.

“This matter is subject to legal proceedings,” he said.

“It is with our insurance company and we are not in a position to comment.”

Basic skills the key As the school holidays end and the school term begins, I send my best wishes to every student for a great school year, full of fun and learning.

The skills of reading, writing and arithmetic are as important today as they were in my day over 50 years ago.

They are the basics for success in future careers in every field.

Maths is as essential for carpenters and plumbers as for doctors and nurses.

The ability to read and write is just as crucial for a teacher, chemist, sales assistant, hairdresser or veterinarian, as it is for a university lecturer.

child starting at a new school, remember, there are probably a lot of students, not just yours, who are uneasy about their first day at a new school.

Rest assured, we have great teachers and they know that students are nervous and will make an extra effort to make sure everyone feels as

comfortable as possible.

Your child might be exhausted when they get home.

Give them some downtime and try not to overwhelm them with too many questions about their day (I believe grandparents and retiring Members of Parliament should also remind themselves of this).

For older students, the most important skill to learn is how to think and question.

We have just passed Martin Luther King Day, a Baptist Minister and activist leader in the American Civil Rights Movement.

He wrote in 1947,“that to save man from the morass of propagan-

da, in my opinion, is one of the chief aims of education”.

He said, “education must train one for quick, resolute and effective thinking and education must enable one to sift and weigh evidence, to discern the true from the false, the real from the unreal, and the facts from the fiction”.

Good advice that is even more applicable today with the masses of false information being posted on social media or in today’s 2016 word of the year, ‘fake-news’.

To all the parents, teachers, principals - and, most importantly, to the students - I wish you an enjoyable year.

Drivers need to watch out for kids Victorian Minister for Education James Merlino has reminded drivers in the Yarra Ranges to be mindful of schools starting back for 2017.

From Prep to VCE, thousands of local students will be again making their way to school, which means school crossings will be places of much activity.

Mr Merlino said students, too, needed to take care.

“A reminder too for everyone - keep a close eye on the roads when walking or cycling to school,” he said.

“There is a 40km an hour zone covering all

roads around our schools, but you can never be too careful.

“So keep an eye out for each other, particularly younger students who may be walking or cycling to school for the first time.”

Mr Merlino said if you were dropping the kids off at school, or just driving near a school during school hours, you should be extra careful.

“Unfortunately, children and traffic just aren’t a good mix,” he said.

“They are more easily distracted and have poor peripheral vision, so keep a close eye out and slow down.”

Many students will start school again this week.

Josh's brave fight ends

By Peter Douglas Dandenong Ranges youngster Joshua Schwarz has lost his almost four-year battle with an aggressive form of brain cancer.

Though it wasn’t without a courageous fight from Joshua and his family.

In 2013, Josh was diagnosed with a brain tumour and given just four months to live, but, incredibly, he turned that into almost four years.

On Friday 20 January, Joshua suffered a brain bleed and he passed away on Saturday, 21 January, at 9.09am.

A fund-raising website was set up afterwards, which aimed to help the family to cover funeral costs.

On the site, sister Jade said no direct trauma had caused the bleed. “(H)is beautiful body just decided that it was time,” she wrote.

“He was even dancing 15 minutes before it happened ... he passed quietly surrounded by an abundance of love and light.”

Jade went on to pay tribute to her brother.

“Joshua was the most incredible little boy and everyone that ever encountered him will say the same,” she wrote.

“His passion for life and his endless charms was so beautiful to witness for the past nine years.

“He was the type of person what everyone wanted to know.”

Jade said wrote that her brother’s favourite pastimes

included dancing, playing with his toys and cuddling everyone.

Joshua was first diagnosed with a brain tumour in March 2013, when parents Penne and Wolfgang, and sister Jade, had believed it was a low-grade tumour that was treatable with radiation or chemotherapy.

However, the family’s worst fears were realised later that year when a biopsy revealed it was an anaplastic astrocytoma grade three (AA3), a fast-moving form of brain cancer.

After further tests, the family was told that Joshua also suffered from a rare genetic gene MSH6, which meant chemotherapy and radiation were not an option.

In December 2013, mother Penne told the ‘Mail’ there was little help available for Joshua.

“The MSH6 stops cells from regenerating, which means the usual forms of treatment won’t work for Joshy - it would just cause more damage,” Penne said.

“And where the tumour sits, they can’t get to it - it’s in the area where language, understanding and movement are affected.

“So doctors won’t do it because there is a high risk of stroke, an inability to communicate, paralysis - it could basically turn him into a vegetative state.”

Meanwhile, in a final display of how greatly Joshua had touched those around him, the fund-raising target of $20,000 was reached in just two days, with 626 people contributing.

Grants for war memorials Yarra Ranges groups have the chance to help locals reflect on their connections with Australia’s wartime history.

The Victorian Government has announced the opening of its grants program, ‘Restoring Community War Memorials and Avenues of Honour’.

Monbulk MP James Merlino said the program helped communities update tired honour rolls and avenues of honour, which commemorated the service of local veterans.

“We have a proud wartime history in Monbulk and it’s our duty to preserve that legacy,” he said.

“This is a great opportunity for local organisations to complete projects or initiatives that give our veterans the fitting commemoration they deserve.”

Grants of up to $20,000 are available.

There are more than 1200 war memorials across Victoria and many more honour rolls.

Of the 325 avenues of honour established since World War I, about 50 remain.

Though, many are overgrown or need repairing.

Applications can be made at www.veterans.vic. gov.au/grants(before Tuesday 14 February).

Be a friend to the flying-fox

By Peter Douglas One simple home garden tip could help save the life of an endangered grey-headed flyingfox.

After a wet spring last year, the native bat has been forced to search far and wide for sustenance because its primary food source - pollen from flowering gumtrees - has been in short supply.

So, the flying-foxes have been venturing into backyards, searching for food sources such as nectarines.

But, according to long-time animal rescuer Tamsyn Hogarth, this has led to a huge increase in injured bats and, subsequently, orphans.

By Night Bat Clinic in Olinda, a licensed wildlife shelter that features a purpose-built flight aviary.

“Usually we have around 10 to 15 babies at any one time, but at present we’re averaging 55,” she said.

“We nurse them back to health, ‘de-humanise’ them and release them.”

Tamsyn works closely with Healesville Sanctuary and Melbourne Zoo, but runs the bat clinic from her home.

She says although the two biggest flying fox colonies in Melbourne are at Kew and Doveton, they can fly up to 60km - including into the Yarra Ranges - which means plenty of travel-time for rescuers.

Tamsyn estimates the network of rescuers in Melbourne conduct between three to 10 rescues daily, with many rescuers finding the present workload difficult.

One way the public can help is by only using wildlife safe netting when covering fruit trees, which is available from most major garden retailers.

“Often either the bats die because of heat-stroke or the net constricting the body.

“The bats can be so desperate to get back to their young that they will chew through their own wings.”

Tamsyn warned that although the bats were a clean animal, the public should avoid handling them, particularly if they were caught in a net.

She had long wanted to be an animal rescuer, but decided on bats because there was a real need for volunteers.

Tamsyn has been solely helping bats for the past seven years.

“It can be depressing at times when you see what the bats go through, but very rewarding when we release them back into the wild,” she said.

Tips to stay water smart can keep it cool

As the name suggests, this style of planter ‘wicks’ the water upwards from a reservoir below the soil, reducing water loss through evaporation of surface water.

Instead of watering every day, you only need to water once every four to six days.

Re-use your laundry grey water: First, ensure you ditch the supermarket detergent and replace with a

chemical-free alternative.

One chemical-free option is called ‘soap nuts’, which are a dried shell of a plant high in saponins and acts as a natural surfactant and cleaner.

Then, divert your washing machine waste water to your pumpkin patch, garden bed or fruit trees.

Hopefully, these tips will prove useful.

Remember, trying out different approaches to gardening is the best way to make your thumb a little greener.

How good bugs can help

By Jodie Symonds Before you reach for the insecticide, you might want to read this - as those critters in your garden or vegie patch may actually be helping your plants.

Healesville crop monitor or, “The Bug Lady” Linda House said in the past few months, warm days combined with wet conditions had contributed to the breeding of insects, including good bugs and bad bugs.

One of the bugs wrongly believed to be bad is the hover fly.

“I worry that some readers may think that hover flies are bad insects and spray them,” Ms House said.

“Look closely at most flowering plants and you will see an insect that looks a bit like a small bee or wasp because it has a bright yellow and black striped abdomen.

“The adults feed on the nectar and pollen in flowers, and help with pollination, just like the bees - (but), they do not sting.”

She said when fully grown, a hover fly could eat up to 50 aphids (bad bugs) a day.

Underneath the leaves of the plant, there may be specks that look similar to dirt - she said this could be an infestation of spider mites.

“A tiny black ladybird called a Stethorus eats spider mites, and lays its pink eggs among them and when they hatch the larvae eat the mites too,” Ms House said.

To introduce good insects, Ms House suggests planting daisies, dill, coriander, chervil, mint and basil.

She said the good insects were then able to get pollen and nectar from the plants.

The plant-eating bugs are not harmful to humans but can be a pest.

Many Yarra Valley crop growers introduce good bugs into their crops to eat the spider mites.

Strawberry crop grower in Millgrove, Luci Corallo from Strawberry Springs said he bought good bugs

to release them onto his crops.

“It has helped because we don’t need to use harmful sprays,” Mr Corallo said.

Ms House regularly inspects home gardens and crops to maximise the use of beneficial insects and understanding of insect lifestyles.

Here’s a light salad with few ingredients when you don’t have a lot of time and the weather is hot and humid.

Chicken, Feta, Olive and Sundried Tomato Salad Prep and cooking time: 2530 mins Serves: 4 Ingredients: 300g salad mix

2 Medium-sized breast (diced) 350g olive, feta and tomato mix 1/2 a lemon Salt and pepper Method: 1. Dice the chicken into 1cm cubes and brown. Cook in batches so the chicken fries evenly. Set aside to cool a little.

2. Place the salad mix in a bowl. You can cut the sundried

tomato up if you don’t like big chunks. Add the tomato, feta and olives as well as the oil to the salad.

3. Add the chicken and a squeeze of lemon. Toss together, season with salt and pepper.

Serve and enjoy.

Note: You could use cherry tomatoes instead. Try it with diced roasted pumpkin and toasted pine nuts, just leave out the olives.

By Kath Gannaway When natural phenomena collide - like longer summer days and your council’s hard-garbage collection - the fall-out can be not only amazing, but environmentally and financially rewarding!

Garden settings that have seen better days regularly stand out in the ‘great annual throwout’, but find a relatively sound one, and all that is needed for a second lease on life is a good sand, a few screws and a coat of paint.

Deckchairs and director’s chairs are also well worth salvaging if they are in reasonable condition and can be restored to the original timber finish or re-invented with a high-gloss colour to make a retro fashion statement.

Top tips for a successful outdoor setting reno: 1: Thoroughly clean with a scrubbing brush or high-pressure hose.

2. Renail or screw any loose slats and hammer in any nails sticking up.

3. Tighten any loose bolts.

4. Fill any holes or cracks with wood-filler.

5. Sand with a medium grade sand-paper to remove paint and get a smooth, even finish.

6. Brush or hose off to remove residue, and wait to dry.

7. Paint the legs and underside of the table and seats and allow to dry.

8. Paint top, making sure you haven’t missed any of the inside edges.

9. Leave to dry and apply a second coat if necessary.

10. Stand back, admire your new setting and congratulate yourself on a helping reduce landfill!

Super tip: Keep an eye out for mistints at paint and hardware stores to keep the cost down.

By Peter Douglas The Screaming Jets are set to thrust local audiences into the musical stratosphere, with the renowned hard-rockers to touch down at York on Lilydale on 10 February.

Fresh from releasing their eighth studio album, ‘Chrome’, the band is hitting the road again with their third run of dates since the May 2016 release.

The latest offering has received a typically warm reception for the Jets, peaking at number 30 on the ARIA Mainstream Charts, an incredible effort considering the band first burst onto the music scene in the early 1990s.

After 27 years of touring and making records, the band knows how to rock Aussie audiences and with tracks such as ‘Better’, ‘Helping Hand’, ‘Needle’ and ‘Come On’, mixing with new tracks such as ‘Automatic Cowboy’ and ‘Cash in your Ticket’, their live shows never disappoint.

Front-man Dave Gleeson, now 48, told the ‘Mail’ their ongoing success was a result of their traditional rock values.

“We’re still there to bring the fire to our stage shows,” he said.

“We’ve got those eight or nine songs everyone wants to hear and we’ll hit them with that straight away.

“We’ll then back off and I’ll talk with the crowd ... let a few things out ... then we’ll smash home the show.

“As far as hard rock ‘n’ roll fans go, they want to see people on stage playing their instruments.

“They want to see Jimi and Scott ripping out, and they want to see Paul stomping around the stage owning it, and Mickl banging away ... and me throwing myself to the floor.”

Gleeson said the album has gained significant momentum, which he is proud to say is of not a result of social media.

“I don’t do Facebook - if I want to say something, I just let loose and say it on the stage,” he said.

“If I say it on the stage, then I don’t get upset about anything at home - except for losing a game of pool.

“You look at someone like Selena Gomez with millions of Twitter followers ... a third of them are just there to spread hate.”

Throughout the 1990s, the Screaming Jets became a household name after a string of successful songs and albums.

This week’s a doozy: we’re looking at two of the worst-received movies currently in cinemas.

Monster Trucks follows Tripp (Lucas Till), a high-schooler auto-mechanic who befriends a playful monster living inside his truck.

This film has attained recent infamy as a box-office flop, Viacom admitting defeat with a $150 million write-off on it. And it’s easy to see why: Monster Trucks is a clever premise smothered by a forgettable, strangely bland movie.

The film has some decent stunts, and Creech, Tripp’s monster friend, is a mischievous, delightful creature brought to life with excellent CGI, but the film’s pacing is slow and aimless and the villains are simplistic to the point of being contrived. Moreover, Tripp is a self-centred jerk of a protagonist.

But if Monster Trucks’s protagonist is annoyingly self-centred, the ego on display in XXX: Return of Xander Cage is sickening.

XXX constantly espouses its hero Xander Cage’s coolness and legendary reputation, but never justifies his assumed awesomeness.

Cage is a smarmy, witless tool. The plot makes little sense, with Cage’s team pitted against a rival XXX team for extremely vague reasons. The action is an incomprehensible mess of quick cuts, shaky cam and tight zooms.

With two of 2017’s worst films now out of the way, let’s hope things pick up with Split next week.

Basin’s Best back to best

By Ian Harley FTGDCA The Basin’s Jake Best has had a quiet year by his standards, with only one century to his name, although on Saturday he almost doubled his run tally for the year, making 154 as the Bears set Monbulk a target of 344.

Best shared a 193-run partnership with Scott Vozzo (85) before late wickets that fell in pursuit of runs.

The Bears finished their 80 overs with 6/343 on the board.

The Hawks have been lacking bowling firepower, with no one making inroads on the Basin line-up.

It will be a big chase next week for the Hawks, which will need everything to go their way.

The Basin is sitting fifth, waiting for a slip-up from one the top four sides.

Upper Ferntree Gully batted first as they hosted Upwey at Kings Park.

The Kings made a healthy 239 with Jay Colee (58no) and Todd Burley (46) standing up to the Tigers' attack.

Cameron Wheeler (4/90) now heads the bowling table with 31 wickets from 10 games, while partner in crime Ben Wood (3/43) now has 17 wickets for the season.

A win here could see the Kings sneak into second, although a loss may allow The Basin to close the gap.

At Wally Tew Oval, Belgrave bat-

Sun shone on the Aths

By Jamie Strudley YARRA RANGES ATHLETICS A warm sunny day made for a fun Saturday morning of athletics at Morrison Reserve, Mount Evelyn.

Good numbers in all grades produced some excellent competition and undoubtedly some PBs. Next week is the Relay Fundraiser.

Bring a donation to put in the bucket and help to keep the relay baton moving for as many laps as possible.

Parents and big kids are welcome, too!

There were two championships on over the weekend.

The Little Athletics Multi Event Championships in Bendigo and the Victorian Country Track and Field Championships at Casey Fields.

Yarra Ranges Athletics was well represented at the Multi Event Championships with Stephanie van Bemmel, Charlotte Comport, Chelsea Thompson and Harrison Van Duuren competing.

Outstanding efforts from all four athletes resulted in some excellent placings.

Stephanie finishing 10th in Under 9s Girls Pentathlon with Charlotte only a few points behind in 19th.

These two girls competed in long jump, shot put, 60m hurdles, 100m and 800m - earning points from each events result.

Chelsea competed in the Under 15s Girls Heptathlon which included 90m hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200m, long jump, javelin and 800m.

In a close competition, Chelsea finished in seventh place.

Harrison competed in the Under 15s Boys Heptathlon, finishing fifth overall.

New Camry is the first Toyota sedan to be based on a Toyota New Generation Architecture (TNGA) platform.

The key benefits of TNGA are improved dynamics, handling and ride comfort from the new Camry platform’s lower centre of gravity, higher torsional rigidity and fully independent rear suspension.

Powertrains are headed by a new V6 petrol engine fitted with direct-injection technology and mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission - two more ratios than previously offered.

An upgraded Hybrid Synergy Drive system is more powerful as well as being smoother and quieter.

It offers three drive modes (normal, eco and power) as well as available paddle shifts.

Local Camry buyers will also be offered Toyota’s 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, which has been proven under Australian conditions.

Standard across the new Camry range will be a suite of advanced safety technologies including pre-collision safety system with autonomous emergency braking, all-speed active cruise control and lane departure alert.

Fresh exterior styling delivers a unique and sporty look that gives Camry a more planted

stance with a longer wheelbase, lower roof and bonnet lines and a wider body.

The sporty look is accentuated by deeper pressed panels, an extended roofline, angled rear pillars and the availability of 17, 18 and 19-inch alloy wheels.

Next-generation Camry’s premium interior delivers high sensory quality with soft-touch surfaces and stitching.

New seats are more supportive and include greater slide range for the front and split-fold for the rear.

Luggage space - already impressive - has gained 10 litres for petrol models and 30 litres for Camry hybrid variants with the hybrid battery now placed under the rear seat.

Improved technology and features include an 8-inch audio display screen, 7-inch colour multi-information display, 10inch colour head-up display and an electronic park brake instead of the foot-operated pedal.

In Camry’s 34-year history in Australia, sales have surpassed 900,000 cars including 690,000 four-cylinder petrol models, 42,000 hybrids and 169,000 V6 variants.

Camry has been Australia’s best-selling mid-size car for each of the past 23 years.

Millgrove driver Justin Paull finally got the monkey off his back when he sped to victory in the recent Victorian Compact Speedcar Title at Rushworth Speedway.

After suffering misfortune in the event for the past two seasons, last month’s win was a huge boost for Paull. The 22-year-old qualified second for the Victorian Title-deciding feature race, alongside Victorian champion Wayne Corbett, and applied pressure early.

When leader Corbett made a mistake midrace, causing him to spin, Paull took the lead and managed to hold on for the rest of the 15-lap race.

In his second meeting for the season, Paull steered home to victory his number 12, Ringwood Mazda supported Gardner machine.

The result came off the back of two disappointing DNFs in the previous events. Now running a Yamaha R1 engine, Paull’s determination to make amends has paid off, a feat he credits to hard work.

“My previous Victorian Title attempts have really pushed me to work harder this season and it’s fantastic to finally get the monkey off the back and come away with a win,” he said.

“It’s not just a win for me, but a win for the whole team and the sponsors as well.

“Everything came together for us this season and I can’t thank everyone enough for their amazing support and contribution.”

Paull has a rich history in speedway, with his entire family having raced in various categories.

His dad, Phil, previously raced Super Sedans and his mum, Debra, raced one-litre sedans.

Presently, brother Jamie races sports sedans, while sister Tanis races Compact Speedcars.

Toyota's eighth-generation Camry sedan has been unveiled by the company’s global president Akio Toyoda at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

The latest Camry - featuring new styling with greater showroom appeal, a dynamic new platform and a more engaging drive - made its debut almost 34 years after the first model went on sale.

Toyota Australia’s executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb said the all-new Camry will arrive in Australian dealerships late this year, after the end of local manufacturing.

“The next-generation Camry - a premium, high-quality sedan focused on performance and technology - will be built in Japan for the Australian market,“ Mr Cramb said.

“We will offer Australian motorists three Camry powertrains - four-cylinder petrol, petrol-electric hybrid and V6 petrol - and include a sports model with a stylish body kit.”

Mr Cramb said Toyota remained committed to local manufacturing until the fourth quarter of this year.

“We will make further announcements about our plans, including the timing of production closure, during the first quarter of this year,“ he said.
