There are few National Trust properties in Casey, though the local branch - which runs a fund-raising op shop in Peel Street - hopes to chip in with the council to acquire one in the future. Many buildings are under Casey’s

An enriched Casey future depends on preserving its treasures of the past, says Berwick’s heritage stalwart Ruth Crofts. Ms Crofts, who has been announced as a recipient of an Order of Australia Medal (OAM) on Australia Day, has been part of the state’s National Trust for nearly 40 years. The founder of the trust’s energetic Casey-Cardinia branch more than a decade ago says that new generations get pride in their suburbs from a properly interpreted history. “If you look around us, there’s a really rich history around us. “There’s a fabric that remains, that helps give people a sense of place and a sense of belonging somewhere.” Keeping history alive - whether it’s a building, tree or landscape - is about getting on the front foot, Ms Crofts says. “If I see something I don’t like, I’ll do something about it. “It’s better to have tried and failed rather than do nothing at all.” Of her fights, Ms Crofts has won plenty. Among the important campaigns are halting the sell-off of the former Berwick Primary School and instead establishing Pioneers Park behind the old school house. She was also part of the steering committee for a Lord Casey statue in Berwick. It fills her with pride to see the numerous Victorian sites saved by National Trust. “I’m not against development per se, but it needs to be sensitively done and with consideration of what’s there before.” Ms Crofts has kept a keen interest in her family’s history, since her Bell family forefathers arrived from Scotland in 1859.
