Mosque revived The proponent of a once-rejected Narre Warren North mosque is planning to re-apply with a smaller-scale proposal after this month’s Casey council elections.

Zain Shah from the Saarban Islamic Trust said the proposed building for 365-367 BelgraveHallam Road was likely to be dropped to a single storey and be similar in scale to a nearby animal hospital.

It was not yet known how many worshippers and visitors could be held at the mosque, Mr Shah said.

The original proposal was rejected unanimously at a fiery Casey council meeting in April.

The gallery overflowed with residents and proand anti-mosque protesters – including members of Casey Against Racism and Stop the Mosque groups.

Mr Shah was confident that the revised application would be “good as gold” when it’s submitted to Casey planners, but “we’re in no hurry”.

“We’ve got a new architect which will change the whole thing. It will be more modern looking,” Mr Shah said.

He believed the council would have no power to enact its proposed ban on places of worship from green wedge areas such as Narre Warren North.

“I believe that’s only in the power of the state planning minister to change.”

He welcomed recent comments from VicRoads which claimed it was unfairly linked to the original proposal’s rejection by Casey on 26 April.

“I think it will help our application, but I think it was more political reasons behind (the council’s rejection).

“The traffic issues weren’t a big drama.”

VicRoads south east metro regional manager Aidan McGann said Casey council had deflected responsibility for the mosque’s rejection by stating that it was bound by the road authority’s objection.

“We’re concerned that VicRoads has been seen as fundamental to the council choosing to reject

the application in a pretty heated political environment.

“VicRoads has been put out as the main reason for the objection.

“We have made those concerns. The council knows our view.”

Mr McGann said VicRoads didn’t accept the original proposal to create access via an uncontrolled four-way intersection on Belgrave-Hallam Road but believed there was a safe alternative access point.

“We’d need some sort of traffic control. We asked if the proponents sat down with the council and us to discuss modifications and they did express an interest in doing that.

“We haven’t heard anything since and the offer still stands.”

In its planning report on 26 April, Casey council stated that it must refuse to grant a permit due to VicRoads’ objection.

The report stated that VicRoads regarded the proposal as “premature” and “does not represent sufficient orderly planning in the area”.

“Council officers are not supportive of the application on traffic grounds as the applicant has not demonstrated that the site can accommodate the expected traffic demand and safety of vehicle movements to/from the site.”

The council also based its decision on other grounds including the height and bulk of the buildings, and its location in the green wedge and Casey foothills.

Rosalie Counsell, of the Green Wedges Coalition, said the coalition would continue fighting to stop places of worship – as well as schools without a small-scale agricultural element – being built in green wedge zones.

“I want to reiterate that this is nothing to do with any particular religion.

“It’s the whole concept of drawing a large number of people from the urban areas for an urban use in the green wedge.”

Casey council declined to comment but referred Star News to the 26 April report.

Community News Enjoy a spooktacular Halloween at Wilson Botanic Park Berwick Wilson Botanic Park Berwick (WBPB) will be the place to celebrate Halloween this year, with the park set to host two spooky events over one exciting day on Sunday 30 October 2016.

The day will kick off with a child-friendly event, Trick or Treat Spectacular, from 3.00 pm to 6.00 pm. Children can come dressed up as their favourite character and trick or treat safely along a 1km trail featuring spooky but friendly characters, entertainment and activities, with lollies included.

The scare-factor will then go up a notch for Halloween Scare Park from 7.00 pm to 10.30 pm, recommended for people aged 14 and over. This event will include a terrifying 1km walking ghost train experience, live music, dancers, sound and light display, as well as food trucks and vendors. Those aged 18-plus also have the option to take part in a paranormal investigation experience for an extra cost.

Conversation is golden

So said Victorian Multicultural Commission chairwoman Helen Kapalos in her precede to a community forum on cultural harmony at Oakgrove Community Centre on 20 October.

There was much gold unearthed among 100 Casey residents at the event organised by Narre Warren South MP Judith Couacaud Graley.

One told of how she was put at ease after feeling “confronted” by the sight of women in burqas at a recent talk in Dandenong.

As probably the only Jewish woman at the talk, she told a Muslim woman of her unease.

“She put her hand out and drew a woman wearing a burqa over to where we were standing.

“We started talking politely. She was so warm, so friendly. She had sparkling eyes.

“So I was helped to break a problem ... something that will help me for the rest of my life.”

Her summation was that we don’t put ourselves “out there” enough to meet people who “don’t fit our mould”.

Another man asked how migrants could deal with being discriminated by skin colour. Another asked how his family could mix better in the community.

“This is our country now. It’s time for us to come out and look after this country’s future.”

A staff member at a Narre Warren primary school called for schools to become a hub for cross-cultural contact.

She described seeing children of all backgrounds playing together at lunchtimes.

Her suggestion was for world music nights at schools as a way to bring people together.

A man said there were widespread mental health strains among Victoria’s 11,000 asylum seekers on bridging visas.

He gave the example of an asylum seeker burnt himself alive in a Dandenong park last year.

The state had also allocated funding for postsecondary skills and training for disadvantaged multicultural communities.

As a former broadcaster at five TV stations, Ms Kapalos said she was often a “frustrated spectator” to “unfair depictions” presented in news bulletins.

She presented a moving video in which participants from all backgrounds took a “DNA journey”.

The people’s assumptions about the “purity” of their backgrounds were debunked by their multinational DNA histories.

“This test should be compulsory,” a participant said.

“Who then would be stupid enough to think they’re of a pure race?”

MP turns up the volume for the voices of harmony

A state MP has unveilled a banner Our Community Embraces Diversity and plans for a cultural event in an effort to unite Casey’s communities.

Narre Warren South MP Judith Couacaud Graley launched the campaign during her community forum for cultural harmony at Oakgrove Community Centre on 20 October.

The banner will be hung at the front of her office’s Princes Highway frontage passed by an estimated 5000 vehicles a day.

“I’ve been upset by some of the statements by some of your so-called community leaders,” Ms Graley said.

She wished “those statements” hadn’t been given the airing they had, and it was up to others to “develop a more powerful voice” to counter them.

“It’s more important than ever to put our hands up and say we like each other for who we are.”

She pledged to organise an event in Casey in which communities could share their talents, experiences and cultural backgrounds.

“We can raise our voices and make a really strong statement about diversity in the City of Casey.”

At the forum, Multicultural Affairs Minister Robin Scott announced State Government plans to support multicultural events and groups that encouraged cross-cultural contact in Casey.

“It won’t be a forum where we listen and nothing happens. We as a state government are determined to take action.”

The Government had recently launched a trial of educating employers on “often unconscious” biases against hiring a diverse workforce.

It included talks with media outlets to offer “more inclusive” internship programs, better reflecting Melbourne’s diversity.

Mr Scott re-iterated the State Government’s belief that “diversity is our greatest strength” noting more than 27 per cent of Casey’s residents were born in a non-English speaking country.

At the heart of multiculturalism was our common humanity, he said. He also spoke on values of “mutual obligation” and “a fair go”.

“There’s no reason for prejudice in the Victorian community. It should always be challenged.”

A Noble Park teen with suspected Apex gang connections is behind bars after he was arrested over aggravated burglaries and evading police.

He and a Narre Warren boy were arrested by Casey CIU detectives.

One of the teens faces 58 separate charges.

Officers captured one of the young crooks when his mother called police after he breached his bail-ordered curfew.

They extracted the other one from an Endeavour Hills home where he was in hiding.

Casey CIU Detective Senior Constable Angela Butler said Apex members tended to work in groups.

“They work in a pack and go around stealing cars and doing daytime burglaries, using the stolen cars to conduct burglaries and evading the police,” she said.

“They don’t care about their victims and don’t care about being out on bail.”

Det Sen Const Butler said police needed people to report suspicious behaviour as soon as they saw it.

“Don’t be afraid to call triple zero and tell police about what you have seen, it’s what we are here for.”

Pistol and knife raiders Pistol and knife-wielding thieves robbed a 40-year-old Doveton man at a Noble Park bakery.

The victim was unloading his van outside Sen Bakery in Railway Parade, about 6.30am on Saturday 15 October, when two men approached.

They were completely covered with masks and gloves.

One produced a 40cm knife while the other revealed a small pistol and they demanded money from the victim.

He led them into the store where they took about $600 from the till plus the victim’s mobile phone before fleeing.

“They are no just places of worship. They serve as places where people can gather and organise youth programs.

“Every person in a free and democratic society has the right to peacefully practise their religion.

“Everyone is human and fundamentally worthwhile.”

Anti-bikie police arrested four people and seized drugs on Wednesday following an affray in Dandenong in the week of 10 October.

Echo Task Force members, with assistance from Dandenong CIU detectives, executed warrants in Dandenong South, Endeavour Hills, Beaconsfield and Lyndhurst about 6am on 19 October.

They seized drugs and clothing at an address in England Street, Dandenong South, and arrested a 33-year-old man of no fixed abode.

He assisted police with their inquiries.

Police uncovered drugs in Manley Close, Endeavour Hills, and arrested a 20-year-old Endeavour Hills woman and a 54-year-old Endeavour Hills man at the scene.

In Fieldstone Boulevard, Beaconsfield, with help from officers from the Special Operations Group (SOG), police took a 24-year-old Beaconsfield man into custody.

No arrests were made at a property in Demmie Mews, Lyndhurst.

The investigation remains ongoing and no charges have been laid.

Soon we’ll be faced with the inevitable advertisements telling us how many shopping days to Christmas; there is an atmosphere of strain as our children are ’swotting’ for those important end of the year exams, and lots of teens are preparing to leave school in a few weeks and go out into the vast business world.

Teenage girls are particularly under pressure at this time of year, with final examinations and often already planning interviews with prospective employers.

If you are leaving school this year, this is the time you should utilise a simple skin care routine so that when the interview does come around in six or eight weeks, it will find you at your best, and not all pimply and spotty.

A mistake lots of young girls make is thinking that skin care is only necessary for older women, when they’re approaching the age of lines and wrinkles.

Skin care is as much a part of hygiene as the daily shower and should start at about 14 or 15 with regular deep cleansing of skin, morning and night.

Neglected, this can develop into a nasty acne case.

5 years ago 24 October 2011 Showing off - for and against each other Love is in the air at this year’s Dandenong Show.

After competing against each other in cattle shows almost their whole lives, show committee members Ricky Ferris and Melissa Anderson have become engaged.

They are heavily involved in the show, with Mr Ferris’s grandfather, father and mother committee members at some stage and his fiance’s family having shown cattle there for more than 100 years.

Grand pioneer was worthy citizen WHAT’S IN A

HENRY James Edgar Harris was born in Marden, South Australia.

He was known as Edgar and for more than 50 years lived on a Princes Highway property called Springfield, opposite today’s Harrisfield Shopping Centre.

Mr Harris was elected to Dandenong Shire Council in 1910 “at a comparatively early age” and served with distinction as a North Riding representative continuously for just on 30 years, the Journal reported in 1947.

He married Catherine Harris at St James’ Roman Catholic Church in Elsternwick in 1895.

The couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at Springfield on 25 February 1945 with their five daughters, three sons and 22 of their 24 grandchildren. Two were away serving in the RAAF.

NAME The Journal at the time described them as “grand old pioneers”.

They lived in Dandenong “out beyond the old stone bridge” when they first married but “have spent practically the whole of their married lives at Harrisfield where they are loved and respected by a host of friends”.

During his time on council, Mr Harris was shire president several times and was renowned for his thorough knowledge of the Local Government Act. He was an old member of the Springvale Masonic Lodge and a Springvale Recreation Reserve trustee up to the time of his unexpected death in Dandenong District Hospital on 3 June 1947.

He was 74 years old. The flag over Dandenong Town Hall was flown at half-mast “as a tribute to a worthy citizen”.

WJ Garnar and Son conducted a private funeral at Springvale Botanical Cemetery on 5 June 1947.

His remains were laid to rest with those of his mother in the Church of England portion of the cemetery, and adjoining the grave of former council colleague Frank Audsley.

At the following council meeting, councillors stood in silence for a minute.

Then-shire president Andrew Ericksen said that in the many years he had been associated with municipal life, Mr Harris had proved a marvellous councillor.

Mr Ericksen’s own association with Mr Harris dated back to 1912. He described him as “gracious and kind in all his ways”.

Alexander Watt Bowman said he found Mr Harris one of the best helps a new councillor could have when he was first elected.

He was very experienced, very sincere in his purpose, and most helpful to him at all times.

As well as Harris Street bearing his name, Harrisfield in the western part of Noble Park was named after the councillor in 1926.

The opening of a new post office in a general store marked the occasion.

Mrs Catherine Harris died at Springfield on 7 March 1954, aged 84.

The Journal on 17 March described her as one of Harrisfield’s finest and most respected old identities.

“Mrs Harris was a worthy partner to one who did so much in the public life of that area,” the paper reported.

“Quiet, friendly and unassuming, the late Mrs Harris endeared herself to all in her lifetime in the district - a life-time enriched by many kindly and thoughtful acts.

“She was a wonderful mother to her large family of five daughters and three sons, all wellknown in this district.”

Garnar and Sons also took charge of her service, held at St Anthony’s Church in Noble Park.

She was laid to rest at Springvale Botanical Cemetery.

Burglar alarm during break-in

Loud alarms are the “second line of defence” and force burglars to flee before they have had a chance to do much damage.

Burglars must have got a rude shock when they were greeted by screaming alarms after they broke into a Hallam security company several weeks ago.

Recorded on high-resolution CCTV, the group had arrived at Eclipse Security in a stolen white Toyota Kluger about 4.30am and jemmied the front door with a large crowbar.

Within minutes, the burglars fled from the caterwauling alarms with a few items of little value from the showroom.

Greg Flood, owner of Eclipse Security, was alerted via an i-Pad push-notification.

Within five minutes, via an app, he was reviewing CCTV footage and sending images of the Kluger’s number plates to Narre Warren police.

Unfortunately, to avoid being identified, the plates and vehicle were stolen and the intruders were shrouded by hoodies.

The burglars had presumably been unaware of the nature of his business, which specialises in alarms, smoke machines, CCTV and other criminal deterrents, Mr Flood said.

“It’s not like we have got things they can sell down the pub like phones or power tools.”

In recent months – during a much publicised spate of home invasions in Casey – Eclipse Security has had a 20 per cent boom in customers.

A nearby factory had been broken into twice in the past month. Eclipse had recorded footage of the offenders as they passed its business on both occasions – as well as catching large-scale litterers dumping in a nearby reserve on Centre Road.

“Even people in commercial premises are becoming more focused on getting their security up to scratch.

“Your run-in-the-mill methods are not going to deter people like the Apex Gang.”

Mr Flood said the first step was to get a hightech CCTV and alarm system, and put up signs to tell would-be intruders that the premises are secured.

Police wouldn’t attend alarm activations unless they were verified, Mr Flood said.

Crime in the municipality rose by 14.5 per cent on a per capita basis in the 12 months up to June 2016.

It’s none of our business but…

Letters to the Editor No money to save lives I’m a resident of Doveton. I’ve lived in the area for 21 years.

Over that period there has been a number of accidents in our street. Seven at the last count.

Fugosia Street runs between Power Road and Paperbark Street. Our street has two left hand bends.

About 4pm in the evening our street becomes a speedway as cars cut through to dodge the builtup traffic at the Power Road/Box Street intersection.

They use the street to try to save time. Police

refer to this as a rat run.

I’ve sent letters time and time again trying to have speed humps installed in the street. The City of Casey replies saying sorry it would cost too much and they haven’t got the money.

Hang on a minute, if they haven’t got the money to save people’s lives, how did they find millions of dollars to build what people are calling the Casey Taj Mahal (Bunjil Place) but they can’t spend $10,000 on speed humps that will serve a purpose and possible save a life.

Frog Hollow Reserve’s helpers, who have planted and tended 60,000 trees in the Endeavour Hills oasis, have been given due recognition.

Conservation group Friends of Frog Hollow were recently presented with the Juan Carlos Loyola OAM Award by the award’s sponsor and Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan.

They were recognised for their tireless environmental work and awareness-raising over the past 14 years, including hosting an annual planting of trees, shrubs and grasses along Eumemmerring Creek.

The award for longstanding community service is given to a volunteer resident or group in south-east Melbourne each year.

It is named after Mr Loyola for his 20-years work with the Doveton Special Soccer School.

Sometimes a number plate tells a thousand words - or in this case, three.

A car was parked squarely in the middle of two sought-after spaces outside Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 17 October.

Its personalised number plate started with three letters - WTF. An excitable accused was, meanwhile, anxious to quiz people outside the court on the

probity of the legal system.

After posing for a selfie with another accused dressed in bold sunglasses and a gleaming suit, the man asked a bystander what he thought about the law.

“It’s all in favour of the woman,” he declared.

The pair looked like they were dressed for the Flemington races but we assume he wouldn’t be bound for Oaks Day - the traditional ladies’ day.

A Dandenong icon is back where it belongs.

The Vietnam War-era helicopter at Dandenong RSL lost one of its rotor stay cables in a storm earlier this year.

Membrey’s in Dandenong brought Huey to the ground for repairs.

The RSL sub-branch’s president John Wells said the Bell UH-1 Iroquois, which was nicknamed the Huey, was one of the area’s icons.

“In Dandenong’s history, the Dandenong ham and bacon pig down at the market is an important symbol, and we think Huey is right up there with him,” Mr Wells said.

“There are still people who don’t know where the RSL is, but they all know where ‘Huey on a stick’ lives.”

Fancy a lesson in victim-blaming with your takeaway coffee?

From Friday 25 November, coffee shops in Casey, Cardinia and Greater Dandenong will be serving up everything from lattes to cappuccinos, chai tea to hot chocolates in coffee cups themed with strong anti-family violence messages.

Questions around victim-blaming and the dangers of casualised gender discrimination and violence will be posed on the cups in a way that puts the onus back onto the perpetrator.

One of the cups reads, ‘Why doesn’t she leave?’, which is crossed out to reveal the take-home message, ‘Why doesn’t he stop? Family Violence. No Excuses.’

It’s the second year for the hugely successful awareness campaign jointly launched by Women’s Health in the South East (WHISE) and Southern Melbourne Integrated Family Violence Partnership.

It’s hoped the cups will shift cultural perceptions on issues including victim-blaming, particularly among those who may not otherwise engage in discussion around the impacts of family violence.

“People always ask that question – why doesn’t she just leave? People think women in a family violence situations can easily just get up and walk away, but women are vulnerable to murder and being hurt,” Ms Lennon said.

“Our message shifts the focus away from women, and puts the onus onto the man.”

On several occasions last year, women who were experiencing violence had confided in cafe staff, WHISE Health Promotion manager Rachel Lennon said.

“We know some people disclosed their own experiences with cafe staff last year, so there will be cards with proper referral services handed out this year,” she said.

Up to 10,000 cups will be circulated through cafes including Shingle Inn at Westfield Fountain Gate, Ginger Jones in Dandenong and Theobroma Chocolate Lounge in Cranbourne throughout the campaign tied with The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence.

The campaign starts of Friday 25 November.

Award keeps the faith

Media publicity scoops up crims

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A group dedicated to promoting social harmony in Casey over the past decade has taken out a state multicultural award.

Casey Multi-Faith Network received a Meritorious Service to the Community award as part of the Victorian Multicultural Awards for Excellence at Government House on 14 October.

President Stephanie Saunders, 78, said the network aims to dispel misconceptions about religious traditions and to foster greater understanding.

In noting a recent flashpoint involving a proposed Narre Warren North mosque, she said there needed to be a “generational change” for that to occur in Casey.

Ms Saunders is demonstrably unafraid of making a stand and staring down bigotry.

She describes a moment at a Lyndhurst pub in which she confronted some young males who were racially taunting a family of diners.

“You’re spoiling my lunch,” Ms Saunders told them.

Then the men “slinked off ”, she recalls.

Casey Multi-Faith Network has held tours of places of worship as well as hosted domestic violence forums and multi-faith concerts and art shows.

Its members also broadcast a weekly radio program called Voices of Faith.

There are plans to hold Ramadan evening meals for the community to better understand the Islamic faith and to find ways to help young Muslim men have more involvement.

Vice-president Pam Mamouney said that, subject to funding, there were plans for a sports event, service project, a barbecue and an overnight camp in Gippsland.

“Discussions are taking place with a local Muslim business owner, youth leaders from other churches and Casey council.”

Since its formation in 2007, the network has overcome early opposition from Casey Pastors Network and come to peace with the municipality’s traditional Christian churches.

Twenty wanted criminals are off the streets, thanks to the new Divisional Response Unit (DRU).

Detective Senior Sergeant John Bergin established the 20-member unit at Dandenong police station in late August to tackle drug crime and fugitives in Greater Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia.

“Since we’ve started, we’ve picked up 20 persons of interests with outstanding warrants,” he said.

“A significant amount of them are from what’s appeared in the paper, 11 of them.”

The crew has also hit drug trafficking hard.

Police executed a warrant at a home in Ambrie Crescent, Noble Park, on Thursday 6 October.

They uncovered a large quantity of ice, cannabis and a firearm, and charged a 27-year-old man with trafficking and possessing drugs of dependence and possessing a prohibited weapon.

On Thursday 13 October, they executed warrants in Carlisle Road, Hallam, and uncovered cocaine, methamphetamine and illegal prescription medication.

They charged a 22-year-old man with possessing and trafficking drugs of dependence.

The following day, a warrant executed in Buckley Street, Noble Park, found heroin, cannabis, an imitation firearm and an “offensive weapon”.

A 31-year-old man will answer charges of trafficking and possessing drugs of dependence, and possessing prohibited weapons.

Det Sen Sgt Bergin encouraged residents to keep an eye out for signs of cannabis-producing, hydroponic grow houses and clandestine laboratories, generally used to manufacture ice.

“We obviously rely on public information,” he said.

Meanwhile, Dandenong-based Southern Migrant and Refugee Centre (SMRC) picked up two awards.

CEO Jenny Semple won an Award for Meritorious Service to the Community, which recognises outstanding commitment to Victoria’s multicultural community for at least 10 years.

SMRC received a Certificate of Merit for Community Innovation for its Afghan Women’s Empowerment program.

Ms Semple has been the SMRC CEO for almost 20 years.

The judges said she’d demonstrated an unwavering commitment to improving the lives of culturally and linguistically divers (CALD) communities.

“Her innovative projects include driver education for refugees, homework support to assist young CALD secondary school students, and the creation of a diverse seniors care program that

provides qualified bilingual workers in over 60 languages,” they said.

Ms Semple also brought together youths from different cultures to restore a motor vehicle.

“As well as learning new skills, the group developed a shared sense of identity that broke down previously held animosities,” they said.

Dandenong West Primary School won the Education and Early Childhood Award.

Judges said that Dandenong West “serves as a best practice example of community engagement in learning”.

They acknowledged the school’s community hub, its connections with libraries and civic centres, its playgroups and men’s shed, and classes for adults in English, computers, cooking and craft.

Principal Bev Hansen said the school was immensely proud and honoured.

“We believe it is a school’s responsibility to serve the community in which it is located,” she said.

“While our core focus is student learning, we understand that this is best achieved working in partnership with families and the wider community.”

Criminal rampage to pay back mafia

The play’s title Robin Deplace is in itself a neat play on words.

It focuses on a hapless man who contemplates a criminal rampage to pay back a large debt to a mafia-like family.

Soon this unemployed character’s life starts to intertwine with the family’s Don and a masked “super-criminal” King Crimson.

Helpful Lions pitch in to lift the load

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Lions clubs members have pitched in to help out a Hampton Park family.

The day-long working bee was a godsend for the Youngs, who have gone through a living hell with their 13-year-old son and brother Connor.

For the past four months, the family has been crowd-funding for vital equipment for Connor.

He requires $40,000 for a new wheelchair, a comfortable chair for relaxation, a hydraulic ramp for the family car, a modified car seat and a shower chair to live full-time at home.

Aside from visiting his family once a week, Connor is mainly confined to respite care in Seaford.

Narre Warren Lions Club president Lorraine Riches said the service clubs, in hearing of Connor’s plight, were keen to pitch in.

On 11 September, members from four Lions and Lionesses Clubs in Narre Warren, Endeavour Hills and Hampton Park held a day-long working

bee to clean out and weeds in the Youngs’ overgrown backyard.

The clubs also invited one of Connor’s sisters Caitlin on a school holiday camp at Licola, and donated a family pass to Myuna Farm.

Connor’s mum Belinda was full of praise for the Lions members’ “amazing” kindness - which has cleared the backyard for the kids to play in.

“It’s a weight lifted off my husband and my shoulders. We just didn’t have time to sort it out.”

It was a lift for the family, not least Connor who endures a “shopping list” of medical conditions.

Connor can neither walk nor talk due to debilitating cerebral palsy.

He stays six days a week at a respite house because he can no longer be lifted manually into bed, the car, bath, shower and his wheelchair due to his spinal fusion.

Thirteen-year-old Meher Bains stands tall on the basketball court – as well as the court of schoolyard opinion.

Meher from Berwick is a trail-blazing first student of Sikh background at his school, as well as the first to represent a Casey Basketball Association’s regional squad.

With a sharp jump shot in his armoury, he’s hit a career high of 30 points in a game. So he is proving a forward in more ways than one.

Along the way, he’s endured cruel taunts about his background from some of his peers.

Some teased him on the mistaken premise he was Muslim, shockingly advising he should join ISIS and detonate a suicide bomb.

“It kind of hurts me but I try to ignore it,” Meher said.

“You kind of remind yourself you’re better than these people who call you these things.”

His mother Upkar knows of other boys whose turbans were banished and hair cut by their parents to avoid teasing at school.

Now other boys of Sikh background are following his footsteps and enrolling in the supportive Berwick Chase Primary School, Ms Bains said.

“We are really involved in our boys’ schools and in sport – we are involved in the community.”

This family of six remain proud of their faith.

All four boys love their basketball, though the family’s well-worn and now broken basketball ring if perhaps suffering from too much love.

Ms Bains emphasises to her boys not to give up on their dreams – or follow the wisdom of basketball great LeBron James: “Strive for greatness”.

Meher strives for the attainable goal of US college basketball and, hopefully, the NBA. The Casey Basketball Association has been a model of cultural acceptance, Meher’s mother said.

Meher has recently won a spot in the association’s regional under-16s side despite being one of the squad’s youngest.

He overcame the disappointment of narrowly missing the cut last year, joining a 10-week intensive coaching program fronted by former US player Lester Strong.

Strong recognised Meher as a player of focus, drive and a “clean attitude”, Meher’s mum said.

Last summer holidays, he toured University College of Santa Barbara and met legend Michael Jordan.

Meher, meanwhile, has sound advice to overcome vilification: “Just keep on believing what you believe in.

“Keep your faith.”

Appeal for July crash witnesses Casey Highway Patrol police are looking for witnesses to a car crash that killed a 36-year-old Noble Park man in Doveton earlier this year.

The man was driving a blue Mitsubishi Magna sedan on the Princes Highway about 7pm on Monday 25 July when his car left the road and hit a tree.

The driver was killed instantly and was the only person in the car.

Police investigators have released CCTV footage of a car they believe was traveling behind the Mitsubishi at the time of the crash.

Investigators hope that the driver of the car will come forward and be able to assist police with their inquiries.

It’s official – it’s time to get out there WITH the weather finally warming up, it’s time to get out into the great outdoors and enjoy what the region offers.

Emerald Lake Park is always a good starting point.

The quarry was founded by William Wilson in 1859.

The transformation of the quarry site began in the late 1980s when work was started by the then City of Berwick.

In 1992, the Honourable Bill Hayden AC, as

Governor-General, officially opened the park, which is dedicated to the memory of early pioneers.

A fossil seam is not something commonly found in a botanic garden or park, but Wilson Botanic Park Berwick is lucky enough to have two.

The fossil sites, which have been studied by universities across Australia, boast both tropical and temperate species.

It is rare to find these varieties in one place.

Such evidence reveals that the site was tropical rainforest many years ago.

VILLAGE GRAND OPENING SUCCESS Clyde North’s newest display village held its spectacular grand opening event at Clydevale Estate recently.

Members of the public were invited into more than 30 of the display homes on-site to admire the innovative designs from some of Australia’s most recognised premier builders.

The family fun day event attracted a record number of potential homebuyers from all around Victoria with hundreds of visitors coming to check out the display village throughout the day.

Striking lucky with defence win

By Casey Neill A family business in Dandenong South is helping to build one of the world’s most advanced fighter jets.

This project and other international achievements earned AW Bell the Manufacturing Award at the 37th Governor of Victoria Export Awards, presented on Thursday 6 October.

CEO Sam Bell’s grandfather Alan William Bell started the business in Oakleigh in 1952.

“He was a pattern-maker by trade,” he said.

“The company started off as a pattern shop and tool room.

“My father (Geoff) took over in 1983.”

AW Bell moved to Dandenong South in 1997.

“My father has retired three times,” Sam said.

“I took over in November 2014.

“Now he’s as retired as I’ve ever seen him.

“Some weeks don’t see him at all.

“I think he’s happy with the way things are going.

“It’s great to have that resource available to us.

We still get him to come and look at jobs.”

Sam explained that the company had two main business streams.

“One is producing investment and sand castings that we machine in-house,” he said.

“That’s probably about 80 per cent of our revenue.”

In the investment arm, they make parts from wax, coat them in ceramics and resins, and melt the wax out to form a mould.

They pour liquid metal inside, break off the mould and clean up the finished part.

Sandcasting involves building a tool from wood and covering it in sand that sets hard to create a mould.

The investment is expected to more than double its export sales to $8 million in the next four years as a result.

The grant is part of a Manufacturing Program that supports advanced manufacturing .

Grants of up to $500,000 have been provided for new technology at 12 other firms recently, which was expected to create 100 full-time jobs.

Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan said the program would help Victoria “transition” towards an advanced manufacturing economy.

The F-35 project has opened other opportunities in the defence supply chain.

“We’ve proven ourselves on this project,” he said.

“Normally we come onto a project that’s running behind schedule and with quality issues and turn it around.

“It’s really exciting to see a company based in Melbourne doing what we’re doing, providing high-quality, complex castings for the most technically-advanced fighter jet.

“That’s going to be our platform to really grow the business now.”

Commercial director Vinesh Karan said the company had a US-based broker.

“She’s looking for new opportunities and doing a lot of follow-up correspondence,” he said.

“They feel like they can deal with someone locally.

“In the next five years we’ll need a full-time AW Bell sub-employee over there or a foundry, a replica of our business here.”

Hub helps youth workers to stick it out Aaron Garth from Ultimate Youth Worker was the lucky recipient of office space in the new Casey Cardinia Business Hub in Narre Warren.

Mr Garth started his business in 2012 when he noticed a high turnover of staff in the youth services industry.

“I started recognizing that a whole heap of my friends had left the youth sector,” he said.

“When we started to ask about why it was general things like a lack of communication, lack of jobs, no ongoing support, and a lack of supervision and training.

“So we decided to have look and see if anyone was trying to fix it and no one was.”

It was through this gap in the market that Ultimate Youth Worker was born to help people in the youth services industry maintain a passion for the work and provide up-to-date training.

Mr Garth and his colleagues provide supervision sessions, coaching, mentoring and clinical training such as youth mental health, first aid, and self-care to youth worker professionals to keep them engaged and enjoying their work.

The business has expanded into different areas of Melbourne and Mr Garth was looking for a new office space.

“I was driving home one day and heard about the competition for the Casey Cardinia Business Hub on the radio,” he said.

“There was the potential to win a coworking space and a major prize of an office and I had to jump on it.

“I knew the City of Casey has the largest youth population in Australia and there would be youth workers facing the same issues.”

Jubilee crowd delights traders

By Casey Neill More than 28,000 people flocked to Dandenong Market to celebrate its 150th birthday.

The Dandenong icon hosted jubilee celebrations on Sunday 16 October, featuring food, rides, entertainment and more.

Louise Noy was among the revellers and was pleased to see a “very big crowd” show up for the occasion.

“I’m glad that they’re recognising how it got where it is today,” she said.

Her family was involved in the journey from livestock market to the huge variety of stalls on offer today.

Louise’s grandfather Joseph had a dairy farm and sold his cows at the market.

“Then when they retired, my dad (Hank) had his own farm as well and he used to take the cows there,” she said.

“I was always there as a kid.

“I moved away from the area, but I always went there when I was on holidays.

“It was always a place that I always wanted to go back and set up my own stall.”

So 15 years ago, she did just that.

“I have a huge range of dog treats. It’s a smorgasbord,” she said.

Louise also stocks shampoos, collars, leads, and information on dogs.

“I do know what I’m on about. I’m there to help you keep your dog happy and healthy.

“I just love pets.

“It was a hobby and then I went into it full time.”

A statue unveiling will bring three months of Dandenong Market birthday celebrations to a close on Friday 4 November.

The bronze sculpture by artist Anne Ross will reflect life in the market.

The market kicked off festivities on 13 September with the launch of Dandenong Market: Celebrating 150 Years book and the official opening of Rosling Lane, a 20-metre historical mural.

Hallam Community Learning Centre manager Dianne Wilson and treasurer Dianne Black delivered 17 beautiful quilts to the Casey Hospital Children’s Ward and Nursery.

Members of the quilting class at the centre not only make quilts for themselves but are also kept busy making quilts to be donated to causes like the Children’s Ward.

Nurse unit manager Liz Brown was thrilled with the donations which she said will brighten up the rooms and a lot of them will actually be donated to needy families going through rough times as well which will help the kids remember their time in hospital as a happy one.

She also asked if a couple of the quilts could be used as raffle prizes which will help raise funds for other needed resources for the children.

SPORT Latest signing looks set to secure T20 showing

By Nick Creely The Dandenong District Cricket Association has been hit by a Hale storm in the form of a current English international batsman.

Adding further intrigue to Buckley Ridges’ astonishing signing of David Hussey, it has pulled off yet another remarkable marquee signing that will now see it as heavy favourite to win this year’s T20 tournament.

International star Alex Hales (27) will feature for the Bucks this season in what is set to add further excitement to the tournament’s already impressive list of marquee signings.

Hales is currently ranked number eight in the ICC player rankings in the world in T20s.

In late August, Hales, while playing for England against Pakistan in an ODI in Trent Bridge, ploughed 171 off 122 balls, helping his English teammates reach the current highest score in ODI history.

The brutal opening batsman also hit an unbeaten 116 off 64 balls in the World T20 Cup in 2014.

At this stage, Hales will be available for one or two matches depending on the availability of Hussey.

This now makes three Nottinghamshire signings for the Bucks, which also has domestic cricketers Steven Mullaney and Luke Fletcher playing.

Nonetheless, this makes Buckley’s T20 side in this year’s tournament, arguably the strongest club side in cricket history, look more like a Big Bash League side than a DDCA side out of Park Oval.

Fitzroy-Doncaster all-rounder Trent Lawford is no longer available for the Bucks, while Jamie Brohier from Frankston Peninsula will turn out once again.

In other marquee signings, Dingley has snared Prahan Cricket Club fast-bowler Matt Wilcox as its marquee signing.

The seamer has been one of Victorian Premier Cricket’s finest bowlers since making his First XI debut back in the 2012/13 season, and is well remembered for a brilliant 6/28 he took two seasons ago against Melbourne.

Berwick will once again welcome Casey-South Melbourne batsman Michael Wallace to the fold.

In last season’s competition, Wallace made a terrific 71 not-out to start the tournament, and previously made a 50 the year before for Berwick.

Hallam Kalora Park has secured current Victorian Bushranger and Essendon skipper Aaron Ayre to its stocks this tournament.

The 24-year old made his Sheffield Shield debut for Victoria last season, while he also featured for the Melbourne Renegades in last year’s BBL. Mordialloc has added Monash Tigers allrounder Dominic Matarazzo to its list.

Beaconsfield has secured Monash Tigers keeper Scott Edwards to its list once again.

Edwards played last season for the Tigers, playing three games, averaging 16.67.

He is the current wicket-keeper in the Monash First XI. Prize money in this year’s competition will be $2000, which includes $1000 for the winner, $600 for the runners-up and $200 for the third and fourth placed teams.

Round 1 will re-commence on Wednesday 26 October, with a blockbuster between Buckley Ridges and Springvale South the headline act.

Round 2 will be played the following week.

Sandown start circuits grow Sandown will host the opening round of the 2017 CAMS National Racing Championships, which will expand to a nine round calendar next year.

The nine rounds will see the addition of two more circuits, with the Nationals returning to Wakefield Park and Morgan Park, giving New South Wales and Queensland a greater slice of the pie.

Director of the Nationals Michael Smith is looking forward to another big season of the Nationals.

“We are pleased to see the calendar expand to nine rounds in 2017, which will allow for more racing time for the categories competing at the Nationals next season,” Smith said.

“To assist with affordability, the nine rounds will be a combination of traditional three-day formats and the introduction of two-day formats for some rounds.

“2016 has been a great season of racing so far, and we are always looking at ways we can improve the Nationals to make it one of the best and most affordable ways to compete in national level circuit racing in Australia.

“The Nationals will also celebrate its 100th round since its inception in 2006, so there is plenty to look forward to next year.”

The season will begin at Sandown in April and will then travel to Phillip Island for the Nationals’ 100th round in May, followed by Winton in June.

The Nationals will then head to Sydney Motorsport Park in July, then drive up north to Queensland Raceway after the Supercars round at Ipswich.

Competitors will then travel back to Victoria for Winton in August and Phillip Island in September for rounds six and seven.

The final two rounds of the Nationals will be held at Morgan Park and finishing in Wakefield Park in November.

A list of categories running on the 2017 calendar will be announced in the coming weeks.

Slow start interstater was soon on the home straight Queensland’s most exciting greyhound Outside Pass proved the highlight of the TAB Melbourne Cup Prelude series three at Sandown Park on Thursday.

After only a moderate getaway Outside Pass manoeuvred herself to clear running, heading to the back straight.

She took control at the top of the home straight and went on to win by 3/4 in 29.38.

Trainer Tony Apap was thrilled post-race.

“From where she was it was a great effort once she got in that position down the back she was always going to be hard to beat,” he said.

“I was a bit disappointed with her first run back from a spell, but after her second run back I knew she wasn’t far away from her best.”

“All she needs is an ounce of luck in her races as she’s so strong.”

Love of game kept her straight

By Nick Creely Rangers star Sara Blicavs is the kind of player that all teams love to have.

These kinds of players, who motivate others, lead by example and bleed for their team, are the heartbeat and the fabric of a thriving sporting club – and define the values and culture that a team lives by.

This has seen the star forward reach 150 games in that time with both the Bendigo Spirit and Dandenong Rangers.

In the 150th game, at home against a strong Perth Lynx outfit, Blicavs was given a rousing reception by her adoring fans, and proceeded to play a game that befitted her consistency and intensity.

Blicavs told the Journal that while it’s just another number, she feels proud of her achievements thus far.

“To be honest I thought it was just another number; but then when my brother Chris said to me that 99 per cent of the world hasn’t even played a single WNBL game, I think that’s when I put it into perspective.

“It is an achievement and I guess I am pretty chuffed to reach 150 at the age of 23.

Looking back at her debut game in the WNBL in 2009 for the AIS, Blicavs said she felt nervous but is thankful for the experience that has helped shape her career.

“I remember getting hit, flying out of court and being so exhausted after the first couple of minutes – I couldn’t even breathe but it was a lot of fun and I can never take that back,” Blicavs said.

After a stint with the AIS, Blicavs won a WNBL championship with Bendigo Spirit, and said it was a feeling that almost can’t be put into words.

“It was seriously the greatest moment of my basketball career so far.

“It gives me more motivation and wants to get that feeling back for our team this year,” Blicavs said.

But at the end of this championship year, Blicavs decided to return to the Rangers and feels as if she is now truly home.

“The group just fits me perfectly. It was a tough decision but I think I made the right one.”

Blicavs said her biggest inspiration and support is her family, who has helped shape her life and outlook in basketball.

“As cliche as it sounds, my family has helped me so much along the way, and they’re always there for advice and I think what I like so much about my parents is that they are realists.

“Both my brothers, too, always played with me when I was younger and I guess they made me the tough princess I am now,” Blicavs said.

Blicavs said her durability comes down to her love for the game but that only two years ago she considered walking away completely.

“I went through a rough patch two years ago where I hated basketball.

“I think the fact that I came out the other end and ended up sticking with it, and coming out better for it, came down to my love for the game.”

Now heading into the next phase of her already glittering basketball career, Blicavs, who has spent some time with the Australian Opals, would love the opportunity to play for Australia at both the Olympic and Commonwealth games.

“I’m not trying to think too much ahead to be honest, but the commonwealth games are coming up in 2018 and obviously the Olympics in 2020.

“I don’t know what the Australian team is doing, but it’s definitely one of my longer term goals.

New home for Cougars gives players a reason to shoot high for success Keysborough Basketball Association (KBA) has made the big move up the hill to Rowville Secondary College.

The Cougars have played their last home game out of Springers Leisure Centre in Keysborough after the association decided to relocate following a tenancy offer from the school.

Association president Gary Nichol said the facility had been the Cougars’ back-up in the past and a chance conversation with stadium management triggered the switch to the east.

“It’s been very good so far – we’ve got a very warm welcome,” Nichol said.

“Alex, the stadium manager here, has been here for a while now and we’ve used this as our back up stadium for BIG V. “He approached me one day and said ‘what about it?’ and I said ‘let’s talk’ and we did.”

Nichol said the invitation and high priority access the Cougars will receive at Rowville Secondary College was too good to pass up and will greatly improve the association’s capacity on and off the court.

“There are now far more opportunities available for both senior and junior players, coaches and the whole deal,” Nichol said.

“Just better opportunities that will allow the association to move forward and flourish ... and it’s simply a far better fit here in a quality basketball environment, in a state-of-the-art facility that have been offered to us.

“The stadium here has offered us a high priority and that’s more than we’ve ever had before with seniors and juniors training and playing at the one facility – that’s something we’ve never been able to do.

“Really happy to be invited onto what we hope to call home.

“That whole playing and training on the one court – you can’t beat it.”

Personal best times for Randle Narre Warren North rising star Thomas Randle has enjoyed a comprehensive two-day test driving a Comtec Racing Formula V8 3.5 (formerly Formula Renault 3.5) at Spain’s Circuit de Valencia earlier this week.

Randle’s test was in preparation for his debut in the high-speed open wheel championship, which will take place at Spain’s Jerez circuit during the weekend of 28-30 October. During the course of the two-day program, Randle completed more than 100 laps, performed practice starts and completed pit stop simulations, lapping the 4.070k circuit over six seconds faster than he did while driving a FIA European Formula 3 specification car at the same venue late last year.

“Driving the car was just phenomenal and the power was incredible, it just keeps on accelerating,” Randle said.

“It was very similar to the feeling I got from the Saab Sports Sedan.

“My head was getting lifted up from the wind I was going that fast, around 280 kph on the approach to turn one.

“The grip on new tyres was unbelievable and I was reaching 215 kph minimum speed through the first corner which felt incredible, and pulling almost three Gs laterally.

“It did take some time getting used to how quickly I could apply the throttle and had a few wheel-spin moments here and there.

“I felt I acclimatised to the speed of the car fairly quickly. The main thing I worked on was trying to slow everything down in my brain when everything was actually happening so quickly.

“The carbon brakes were another area I had to get used to as the first two laps you have virtually no brakes at all until they warm up, but once they have heat in them they’re very aggressive and the braking distances very short.

“It was great to be back at Valencia, a track which I already have the knowledge of, and I was running six seconds a lap faster than the times I did in there in F3. My fastest lap in the F3 was 1:25.7 and I did a 1:19.7 in this car, completing

Narre Warren North’s Thomas Randle is continuing his rapid rise through the world of motorsport.

Friday 14 October was a day of records for the Springvale Little Athletics Centre with the shot put records being broken twice.

It is just two weeks into the competition season and already the exciting young athletes are upping the ante and improving each week.

Earlier in the day, young athlete Damon Harbis threw a highly impressive 9.40m, breaking the previous record by 10cm.

Then, out of the blue, Declan McBean threw a brilliant 11.85m, breaking Damon’s record by 2.45m.

It is very rare in athletics that two competitors break the same record on the same day in the same event.

Just a week prior to this achievement, Declan also broke the discus record at the Athletics Centre in Springvale.

With the previous record sitting at 29.76m, Declan decided to break it in a remarkable throw of 43.87m.

This throw, which highlights the elite talent Declan is growing into, is not far off from some of the best Australian junior discus records.

With the season still young, president Cassie Jacobs was excited about what was happening and said other athletes have still got plenty of records to break.

“Both these two athletes competed at State School Athletics.

“We are looking forward to other records being broken by our athletes throughout this season,” Jacobs said.

Jacobs also said there was plenty of room left for any children who were interested in taking part.

Athletics is for children aged five to 15 years old and registrations are still welcome.
