A nip of fun IT was another beautiful day for the Seahorse Nippers on Noosa Main Beach last Saturday. Volunteers and participants took to the water for paddleboard fun, while others stayed on the beach for great games and skill testers that were a huge hit. Sad end for koala By Jolene Ogle NOOSA’S much-loved and oftenphotographed Mr Cuddles the koala has died after suffering an agonising infection. Queensland Koala Crusaders’ Carolyn Beaton made the announcement over the weekend and said Mr Cuddles’ hand, nose and mouth had become ulcerated and his demeanour had deteriorated before the decision was made to euthanase the iconic koala. In a statement to the media, Australia Zoo Wildlife vet Dr Rosie Booth said a postmortem

showed changes to Mr Cuddles’ spleen and bone marrow, which is consistent with active retrovirus infection. Ms Beaton said Mr Cuddles was one of seven local koalas to be put down over the past few months after they were unable to be returned to their natural habitat due to disease. Another local koala, Lesley, was rescued but then deemed “no longer viable” due to complications of chlamydia and a thickened bladder and uterine walls. Lesley was also euthanased along with five other koalas from Noosa National Park.

Queensland Koala Crusaders president Meghan Halverson said the future wasn’t looking bright for the Noosa koala population unless urgent action was taken. “If you look at the long-term evidence of koala disease prevalence in Noosa National park and the fact that we have lost seven koalas in the past few months, we are truly in crisis,” she said. Ms Halverson said there were still two koalas in the Park with disease symptoms that had eluded rescuers. “While they need care, I fear that if they go this might be it, the end for those koalas that everyone

comes from far and wide to see in Noosa National Park,” she said. “Hopefully it’s not too late. If government, community and the wider world can work together we just may be able to meaningfully help those koalas we hold so dear to our hearts.” The Queensland Koala Crusaders has thrown its support behind the coming fund-raising luncheon at Makepeace Island on Friday 30 September where funds will be raised for a koala conservatory. The Crusaders said such causes are worthy of broad support.

Greens endorse Joe JOE Shlegeris has been endorsed as the Greens candidate for Noosa, marking the start of a long race for the top spot at the next State Election. The next election will be held at either the end of 2017 or the start of 2018, and Mr Shlegeris said he couldn't wait to get started. The Greens pre-selection was held on Saturday 17 September, and branch convenor Steve Haines said the party was “extremely pleased” there were two candidates for pre-selection -- Mr Shlegeris and Aaron White. “This reflects the continuing growth of our branch and our support within the Noosa electorate,” he said.

In a statement to the media, the Greens said they believed they represent the only real alternative to the LNP in the seat of Noosa. “At the last election, we argued that if Joe were elected he would have a chance of holding the balance of power,” Mr Haines said. “It turns out that was correct. Had he been elected last time, things would already be different. He would have used the bargaining opportunities created by our hung parliament to achieve positive solutions for local problems such as the TAFE and Noosa public hospital funding.” Mr Shlegeris said this election campaign would be all about “delivering strong, independent,

representation” for the residents of Noosa. Mr Shlegeris said, if he was elected to the seat, he would apply the “Noosa Test” to all legislation and spending decision. “How does this affect the people of Noosa? How can it help make life better for all of us here in Noosa?” he said. “I ask voters to support me imposing the Noosa test to protect and enhance the way of life we all enjoy. I bring the commitment, experience and competence required. “I will make a difference. I can’t wait to get started.”

MP’s maiden speech for mental health WHILE some federal MPs used their maiden speech to make a political statement, Wide Bay’s Llew O’Brien shared stories about his past, his family and his journey to becoming the newly elected member. In his speech to the House of Representatives on Wednesday 14 September, Mr O’Brien, who has succeeded former Nationals leader and long-time previous incumbent Warren Truss, said his road to politics was a humble one. “My journey to this place has not been a high profile one, it has been of a regular man whole family is the most important thing in his life and who also loves his community,” he said. Mr O’Brien left school at the age of 15 to care for his mother who had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of motor neurone disease and in his speech he spoke of how his mother taught him many lessons including courage, selflessness and honesty. “While she was dying, my mum taught me the most valuable lessons on how to live and treat people. Those are the lessons that I bring to this place,” he said. At the age of 17, Mr O’Brien met his wife, Sharon, and a love of helping people lead him to join the Queensland Police Service. As a traffic accident investigator with the Queensland police, Mr O’Brien responded to some of the most serious accidents on the Bruce Highway between Cooroy and Curra, then known as the deadliest stretch of the highway. “It was a job where you would be hit by the confronting sights,

Federal Wide Bay MP Llew O'Brien. sounds and smells of absolute tragedy and trauma,” he said. “As time sped by you would furiously do what you could as a first responder ... then I would be there with a tape measure out and a clipboard watching traffic flow past at 100. “Those drivers going on with their lives had no idea about what had just occurred. Yet I did and it would happen again and again and again.” The pressures of being a first responder eventually caught up with Mr O’Brien who was diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress

Disorder (PTSD). “Over a decade ago, in my policing career and as a traffic accident investigator, I went through a very intense phase that saw me struck down by depression and anxiety,” he said. “This soon led to a diagnosis of PTSD. I was absolutely floored. But, my story of recovery is a successful one. “With a supportive employer and my amazing wife, it took more than a year to get me back to the job I loved, which at times I thought I would never return to.” Mr O’Brien said he shared his

story because he wants to encourage the community to break down the stigma associated with mental illness. “We can all benefit greatly by ending the stigma associated with mental illness so people feel comfortable about talking about their symptoms, getting the early help they need and commencing their recovery so they can live a fulfilling and happy life,” he said. “I tell my story to reduce the stigma and hopefully make it easier for others in Wide Bay and the broader community.”

New life through the lens By Hollie Harris FLY-IN, fly-out work has become a popular option for Sunshine Coast families and although statistics show FIFO workers on the coast are growing, Noosa local Todd Brewer has fought to create a new career back home with his family. Over 1000 Sunshine Coast residents are now FIFO workers, which is more than the Gold Coast where only around 800 mining workers live. After spending four years committed to FIFO roles as a carpenter, trades assistant or safety adviser, as well as underground work, Todd decided it was better for himself and his family to try and work at home again. ‘Working away can be tough on family life. Not seeing your family for long periods of time and working in trying conditions can get too much for some,” Todd said. Although Todd is grateful to have been able to get work in an industry

Interstate holiday-makers have led the way for a record number of domestic visitors to Noosa.

Record number of domestic visitors INTERSTATE holiday-makers have led the way for a record number of domestic visitors to Noosa, according to Tourism Research Australia’s latest National Visitor Survey. The survey looks at data for the year ending June 2016, and found Noosa attracted 803,000 domestic overnight visitors in the year, which is a 12.3 per cent increase on the previous year. The number of nights spent in Noosa increased more than 20 per cent to 3.2 million, while spending rose 17 per cent to $595 million. Tourism Noosa acting CEO Louise Terry said almost 40 per cent of domestic visitors were from interstate where Tourism Noosa has conducted significant marketing campaigns, and they also stayed more nights (35 per cent increase) and spent more (43 per cent increase) while in Noosa. “We’ve had a consistent strategy to target the high-spending interstate markets over the past few years, and it’s clear that this focus has paid off,” Ms Terry said.

“This was the fifth consecutive quarter of growth in domestic visitor numbers and nights which supports the positive feedback from many of our members.” The Noosa region’s strong domestic visitation results also complement positive growth for the Sunshine Coast and Queensland as a whole. The figures, released this week, follow the record international visitor results released last week to give Noosa a total of more than 2.2 million visitors for the year ending June 2016, which is a 15 per cent increase on the previous year. Total visitor nights rose 15 per cent to more than 4 million, while total spent for the year, including day trip visitors, increased 23 per cent to $831 million. “We are constantly evolving and reviewing our strategies to ensure these positive outcomes are sustained into the future and continue to deliver benefits to Noosa’s businesses and the local economy,” Ms Terry said.

Cops spring into operation break POLICE are helping motorists to stay safe on the roads these school holidays with the launch of Operation Spring Break 2016. The state-wide initiative for the September and October school holidays is aimed at reducing the number of serious injuries and fatal traffic crashes. The operation that has already started will run until 6 October with an aim of directing community attention to offences related to speeding, impaired driving, seatbelts, fatigue, distracted driving, defective vehicles and other road-related offences. Noosa Heads acting officer-incharge Senior Sergeant Peter Feldman said local officers were already busy focusing on traffic patrols, and urged motorists to drive with care especially during the holidays when there was an influx of visitors on the roads. Police Minister Bill Byrne said one fatality this school holiday was one fatality too many. “The September school holidays are traditionally a busy time on the road ... with an increase in vehicles on the roads, there is a potential risk for there to be an increase in traffic accidents,” he said. Police Commissioner Ian Stewart said police were targeting traffic offences in Queensland to make roads safer for everyone. “Across these school holidays, police will maintain a highly visible pres-

During last year’s operation, police detected 1083 drink drivers and issued more than 1150 infringement notices for the use of mobile phones.

Drivers are urged not to drive tired, drink drive or be inhibited by drugs. They are expected to stick to the speed limit, wear their seatbelt, take a break every two hours and give their full attention to the road when driving.

Warm Noosa welcome plan By Jolene Ogle VISITORS can expect an even warmer welcome these school holidays with four new Noosa Ambassadors hitting Hastings Street this week. The four Sunshine Beach High School students are armed with tourist and local information to help visitors find the best place to eat, locate the loos or snag a car park space. A joint initiative of Tourism Noosa and Member for Noosa Glen Elmes, this is the second time the Noosa Ambassadors have taken to the streets. Mr Elmes said visitors would benefit from the “down-to-earth, local knowledge” the four Year 10 students could offer. “The visitor takes a nice warm feeling of Noosa home with them, and the best form of advertising is word of mouth,” he said. Mr Elmes said the Ambassadors would also benefit from the two-week program, gaining valuable experience as volunteers. “The girls will have on their resume something not many others their age will, and that’s experience volun-

NOOSA District State High School Year 11 social and community studies students learnt about the life of a driving instructor, thanks to a special presentation from Rightway Driving School instructor Phillip Ryan. Mr Ryan told the students not to stress about not knowing what to do after school as careers are very transient and changeable these days, and many people have multiple jobs before they find the right one. Work in areas like landscaping, mining, hospitality and emergency response were tried out by Mr Ryan, before he took on his current role as a driving instructor. Many students recognised Mr Ryan from his presentation at the Year 11 RYDA excur-

sion, run by the Rotary Club, which focused on road safety. Mr Ryan explained and demonstrated how to best hold a steering wheel and manoeuvre turns in a safe manner, without jeopardising wrists, hands or fingers in the event of an airbag deployment. “Many people lose thumbs when the airbag shoots out at over 200 kilometres per hour, because they are holding the steering wheel with their thumbs in the way," Mr Ryan said. The students were reminded to be careful about singing or talking to themselves in the car, as the police could mistake them for using Bluetooth or wireless communication, which is not permitted for PPlated drivers.

Loose items in the car and the risks they pose were also discussed, with Mr Ryan describing one of the worst callouts he had in emergency response with a driver involved in a crash who had an unsecured chainsaw in his vehicle. “Needless to say, the result of the crash with the unsecured chainsaw was pretty disastrous. It’s important to secure down even simple items like water-bottles, because they can be launched through the windscreen or hit the driver in the head, resulting in terrible injuries,“ Mr Ryan said. The class enjoyed taking a look at Mr Ryan’s vehicle, with its dual pedals, and he encouraged the students to gain more driving experience over the school holidays.

Distinguished gents take the ride GENTLEFOLK, start your engines! The annual Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride is happening this Sunday 25 September in Noosa. Last year, more than 100 riders donned their suits and straddled their vintage bikes to take part in the worldwide ride for men’s health, and this year more than 130 riders have already signed up. Relief cushions 'foreign' surcharge FOLLOWING consultation with the property sector, Treasurer Curtis Pitt has proposed that ex gratia relief be provided to overseas developers from the government’s new three per cent foreign acquirer duty. Mr Pitt said careful consideration had been given to all stakeholder suggestions, and a number of changes had been made to the first draft of the guidelines. “We are introducing the three per cent Foreign Buyers Surcharge to ensure foreign purchasers of residential property, who benefit from government services and infrastructure, make a contribution to their delivery - as local buyers do,” Mr Pitt said. “Prior to the policy taking effect on 1 October, we have engaged extensively with industry and taken on board expert feedback

to ensure our guidelines strike the right balance between provision of targeted relief, simplicity and certainty of administration. “Following these consultations, we will be providing a specific exemption for projects that receive ‘significant development’ status. “To pass this test, the development by a foreign entity must include a minimum of 50 residential lots. “We have also included an amendment allowing for ex gratia exemptions in regional areas where a major project may not strictly meet the ‘significant development’ status threshold but can demonstrate that it would deliver significant economic benefits in the region where it’s proposed to occur. “The regional significance test is targeted at non-metropolitan areas, and

LETTERS Emotions, myths, errors A NUMBER of press reports and letters have been published regarding the Sunshine Coast Hospice. These have been laced with emotion, myths and errors. The name â€œKatie Rose Cottageâ€? was never formally adopted as the name of the facility, although signage to that effect was erected by some of the volunteers. The original name of the organisation was â€œThe Sunshine Coast Community Hospice Limitedâ€? and it was shortened to â€œSunshine Hospice Limitedâ€? for obvious reasons. The original economic model was a charity that charged no fees but that met all costs from community support, op-shops and gifts from patients and their families. Most staff and support workers would be volunteers. In 2010, a house was rented in Redwood Road, Doonan and the hospice began operations. In 2011, a new board was elected and the hospice was moved to a much more appropriate facility at 855 Eumundi-Noosa Road, Doonan. After operating hand-to-mouth for five years the board was faced with the prospect of trading while insolvent. This indictable offence could result in the directors being jailed and so the board reluctantly ceased operations in December 2015. Strategic and financial planning has now been completed so that when the hospice is re-opened it will be economically sustainable well into the future by qualifying for State and Federal Government funding. Already the State Government has made a significant grant to the hospice building fund. While community support permits the hospice will continue to embrace all patients including those that are charity cases. The hospice will be accredited as it will comply with the Health Department construction code and will be certified to comply with patient care standards and quality management standards. This will not adversely affect the special homelike nature of this small six-bed hospice which will also provide outpatient and respite palliative care. Sunshine Hospice Limited has op-shops at

Time makes it real? ACCORDING to Graham Coghill (Noosa Today, 1 September) the greenhouse effect must be real because it has been known for over 150 years. The â€œeffectâ€?, first suggested by scientists in the early years of the 19th century, was an attempt to explain observed surface temperatures on the mistaken belief that the atmosphere heats in the same way as the air in a glass enclosed greenhouse. However experiments have shown that a greenhouse heats because the glass roof prevents the warm air inside being replaced by cooler air from the outside, not because it traps heat. The atmosphere will never be a greenhouse because there are no physical barriers to prevent air warmed by contact with the surface from rising and cooling. To suggest otherwise is complete fiction and the use of the term â€œgreenhouseâ€? gas is misleading. We should not imply that the early scientists were deliberately misleading. Their ideas were based on classical (Newtonian) physics

Road to ruin THE present system of ideas (economic rationalism) that purports to embellish human activity is the most outrageously deceptive and deplorable load of nonsense hereby known to man. Entrenched unemployment, rising underemployment, unaffordable housing, destructive levels of material inequality leading to social breakdown manifesting innumerable problems, misuse of technology (data retention, military industry complex) are just some examples, all have been documented as rising since 1970s. It seems three-quarters of human souls shall

suffer, or attempt to alleviate that suffering, so that one-quarter may experience the full spectrum of humankind possibility. (The evidence of this being representative of a competitive meritocracy is barely credible, giving what is happening before our very eyes.) This sacrifice and partnered incredible durability goes almost completely unacknowledged for what it is, and its intensity. I myself welcome working for the purpose of the forward projection of peaceful cultures ... but not under the present guise with so much human uniqueness and spirituality crushed. Meanwhile the rouse goes on your own home, a fulfilling career, true human independence free of fear. These are all ideas that are now â€œeconomically unpalatable", as if some monster is eating everything. It's just not sexy

Abortion clarity I AM sure many women in Noosa are curious to understand what Glen Elmes meant when he said abortion should not be “a free for all”. Most women I know expect abortion to indeed be “a free for all” when it comes to choosing what they do with their own bodies and they do not particularly care for the opinions of men and religion when it comes to this personal issue. Glen also referred to the upcoming Abortion Reform Bill as “the most laziest piece of legislation” he had ever seen. Perhaps Glen can enlighten us as to what he has done on this important issue in the 10 years he has been representing Noosa women in the Queensland Parliament? We do however congratulate Glen for wanting abortion to become legal which surprisingly put him at odds with his own party, The LNP, who want the current 1899 law to remain unchanged. Schedule shot THE capital works update from council’s September general committee meeting shows a continued inability to complete works on schedule - only 40 per cent of the YTD actual budget has been carried out. In response to readers’ calls for positivity surrounding Noosa, I have to admit failure. Though tourism continues unabated the general community have been disadvantaged; I think Noosa Council has struggled since de-amalgamation and can’t find a highlight. I am pleased to confirm that I am working with Australian Government departments on the delivery of all of the announcements I made during the election campaign, including funding for Peregian Beach Surf Life Saving Club, as well as: $2 million towards upgrading the Cooloola Noosa Road to create better access and opportunities for tourism and agriculture; $22,000 for a new kitchen and bathroom at Noosa’s Men’s Shed; $400,000 to improve access at Noosa National Park; $396,698 for CCTV cameras to improve community safety at Murgon; $25,000 to extend Murgon’s Men’s Shed $20,000 for a new acoustic ceiling at Murgon’s PCYC; $200,000 to the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce for CCTV cameras at Cooroy; Extending mobile phone coverage to Poona and along the Wide Bay Highway between Woolooga and Kilkivan; $395,000 to renovate historic buildings along Kent and Wharf Streets, Maryborough; and $68,000 to fund a Men’s Shed at Tin Can Bay. Eumundi’s crafty move KNOWN for its bustling markets every Wednesday and Saturday, the Eumundi township is welcoming in spring by offering a unique ‘behind the scenes’ meet-up with its artisans, fashion designers, makers, restaurateurs and musicians. Every Friday from 9am to 4pm for the 12 weeks of spring, this exciting addition to the cultural calendar in Eumundi will run designer wear fashion workshops, art and craft gatherings, author talks, live music and meet-the-maker opportunities. The initiative is led by the Eumundi Chamber of Commerce and in partnership with Eumundi Combined Community Organisation (ECCO) and Experience Eumundi. Chamber president Andrew Dudas said he was thrilled at the prospect of welcoming more locals and visitors into the town outside market days. “Fridays will mean visitors can immerse themselves in the culture of the town, delving into the stories behind the artwork or learning how to put together a designer fashion wardrobe for Spring Carnival,” Mr Dudas said. “Meeting the makers, visiting their studios and understanding how an item is crafted, gives the visitor an opportunity to better connect with the town, its people and the source of the products.” The renowned Eumundi Markets regularly attract more than 10,000 visitors every market day and this ‘whole-of-town’ experience on a Friday encourages people to visit for longer and enjoy a treasured one-onone experience. Over 15 businesses are opening their doors each Friday and every week there is something new on offer. Visitors can lose track of time paging through the treasure trove of rare and specialty out-of-print books, engage with makers to find that special momento or gift, learn the secrets of artisans and designers in their creative spaces, indulge the senses with delicious homemade food from local produce, as well as fare cooked by world class chefs.

Erica’s solo exhibition is titled Companions and will be held at the Pomona Railway Station Gallery from Saturday 15 October, with the grand opening at 11am, and will run until 15 November. Although Erica enjoys a variety of subjects most of her current work reflects her love of birds, many of which inhabit the local area. Erica said she was inspired by the Australian landscape and her observations of the daily lives of birds. “I want my paintings to tell their story and bring into focus the beauty and value of these beautiful creatures,” she said. “They are with us every day. Whether they are raucously flying overhead, waking us up with their songs or visiting the bird bath, they live beside us and are an endless source of fascination for me.” Erica completed a Diploma of Fine Arts in 2009 at the Noosa TAFE Campus, has exhibited in group exhibitions and has won several awards including Best in Show at the Noosa Regional Gallery Taste of Art Exhibition in 2015. JEAN and Roger Leigh have opened a boutique pet hotel near Cooroy and the unique difference is they only take six dogs at a time. The continued success of their original Home Boarding service has attracted owners from Caloundra to Gympie. The Leighs wanted to replicate this â€˜home away from homeâ€™ environment, with Jeanâ€™s dream being fulfilled when they were able to open their own Kennels and Cattery.

â€˜Our Kennels are hotel rooms for dogs,â€™ Mrs Leigh said. â€˜We only take six dogs to ensure they all have plenty of walks and lots of individual TLC,â€™ she said. Each room is themed in a different style such as Beachy, Balinese or French and the kennels are large with comfy beds and an individual outside garden area with some taking up to three dogs from the same family. Jean said the cattery originally operated as Pussycat Farm Stay for up to 30 cats and now completely renovat-

THE first weekend of the new patrol season is over and all club captains have reported an incident-free weekend. At Sunshine Beach, patrols reported small crowds, and at Noosa crowds were also on the small side. With Noosa’s Main Beach being in good condition the crowds were wide spread. At Peregian, lifeguards still maintained control of the beach for the Saturday patrols. Veteran lifeguard Adam McKane said: “There were two of us on duty and because of a couple of flash rips we had a rescue in the mid-afternoon. The new patrol roster system looks to be OK with us doing the Saturdays and the clubbies doing Sundays”. With the never-ending appeal for drivers and crewmen for the IRB (Inflatable Rescue Boat) teams, training continued on Saturday with two members of Sunshine Beach starting their course under Noosa instructor Chris Grandemange. Good to see these two clubs again working together. With the Noosa National Park being situated between

both clubs the more our lifesavers get to know each other the better it becomes for our IRB teams. With visitations for our district being on the increase and the walk through the national park being past unpatrolled, beautiful beaches incidents are sure to occur. For two young members of Noosa, last Sunday 18 September will definitely be a day to remember. At 7am Sunday for the first time, patrolman Lachie Lansdown aged 20 walked on to Noosa’s Main as a patrol captain. As such, not only was he in charge of the 10-person rescue team but was also responsible for the safety of all those who came to bathe on Noosa’s Main Beach. Then at noon his shift was finished and he handed over to another patrol captain in a similar situation. This time the new patrol captain was 19-year-old Olivia Blight, and her 16-person rescue team as well as Noosa’s Main Beach were also under her control. For two people at such a young age, this would seem a big responsibility. However it is not something that has happened overnight - both patrol captains. have come up through the ranks starting as little Nippers. Following this they then moved up into the senior club where they

one, patrol captain. At the end of her first patrol, Olivia - who is studying engineering at Q.T. in Brisbane - said: “It was great. I love the way of life and in particular I get a kick out of helping others”. For Lachie - whose occupation is

lifeguard - it is definitely a family affair. “Both my parents and sister Emily are in the club; and mum and dad are also working as patrol captains.” As we have been doing now for several seasons, Noosa Today wishes everyone a safe summer. First and foremost remember; those beautiful little beaches that you pass are not patrolled; so if life savers can’t see you they can’t save you. Come, meet the team, have a look around and meet your champions; see the little Seahorse Nippers perform and join in the barbecue. Remember, this is your town, your beach - and we are your lifesavers.

Amazing year for Wombats AT the end of a season where there were many firsts, Cooroora United Football Club took the opportunity to do two things at once last weekend. Trophies were handed out to great applause at the junior presentation day, but the fact that eight of the nine competitive teams made it to the finals this year, four made it to the grand final and two won their grand final games was simply amazing. The timing of the gathering couldn’t have been better for the Wombats, with many of their sponsors also on hand to see what all the hard work amounted to at the much-loved local football club.

WORLD tour tragic that I am, I got up at 4am the other day to watch Jordy Smith end Joel Parkinson’s dream run in a fairly lacklustre final in small, side-shore Lowers. It was a disappointing end to what had been a surprisingly intriguing Hurley Pro at Trestles. I wrote last week of the hysterical reaction of some competitors to judging decisions, but that was only half of the intrigue. In the men’s event, the final eight turned into generational conflict, with old stagers like Parko, Mick Fanning and Kelly Slater really taking it up to the young guns, whose speed on the face and air games made them firm favourites on the performance A-frame peaks of Lowers. As the contest worked its way through the early rounds, it looked like it was Filipe Toledo’s for the taking. With not much swell on the horizon, the young Brazilian with the fastest turns and best airs on tour appeared unbeatable in waves under shoulder height. I enjoy watching Toledo surf, but getting up in the

middle of the night to see him mow down my old favourites was not really on my agenda. However, I made the effort to set the alarm and check who was in the final and, wonder of wonders, six foot three inch Jordy Smith had found a chink in the Brazilian armour. Now, with the early exits at Trestles of rankings leader John Florence and former leader Matt Wilkinson, the world championship has been thrown wider open than at any time since Kelly Slater came from way behind to slide past Aussies Mick Campbell and Danny Wills on the final day at Pipeline in 1998. With the Europe leg still to come, it might be a little early for that call, but the reality is that no one at the top of the rankings - not yellow-jerseyed John John, Gabriel Medina at two or Wilko at three - can afford to relax, with Jordy Smith and Kelly Slater now barking at their heels. Granted, it’s going to take a superhuman result for Kelly to bridge the points gap this late in the season, but he’s done it before, and his momentum has been growing with every event. And while Peniche’s Supertubos has not been a happy hunting ground for him, he knows Hossegor inside out, and at Pipe, well, he’s a master.

Jordy Smith’s road to his first title is also far from easy, but he has a healthy break on Kelly and he too seems scarily focused on winning. As regular readers will know, I’m a Kelly tragic as well as a tour tragic, but if the old boy can’t make it the even dozen fairy tale for his swansong, then I’d love to see Jordy go down to the wire with John John and Medina. As for Wilko, well, I hope he makes a liar of me, but I think he peaked too early and I suspect he’s going to finish the season heading south. Pity, but he’s got plenty left in the tank for the future. Meanwhile, on the women’s tour, it’s all about Tyler Wright. I’m a huge fan of this power surfer from Culburra via Lennox. The whole Wright tribe is pretty awesome of course, but I just love Tyler’s sunny attitude while she tramples on her opponents with her brutal attack. She’s definitely the smiling assassin of the tour, and I’m completely sure she will take out her first world title in December. At Trestles, however, Tyler’s campaign nearly came unstuck at the hands of my other favourite on the women’s tour. Multiple world champ Steph Gilmore came rampaging back

into contention with a hard-fought second, and she really surfed beautifully all event. But I think the points spread is too great. The wheels would have to fall off completely for Tyler to give Steph a sniff, and that ain’t going to happen. Three silver medals sport UNIVERSITY of the Sunshine Coast athletes have finished the Rio Paralympics with three silver medals and a swag of personal best performances. USC Sportsperson of the Year Kyle Bridgwood made a stunning Paralympic para-cycling debut, earning silver in both the individual pursuit and road time trial, while USC Spartan and student Blake Cochrane swam his way to a silver medal in the S7 100m breaststroke. Kyle, who studies a Bachelor of Primary Education, also recorded a sixth-place finish in the highly competitive C4-5 road race to wrap up his campaign. All seven members of the USC Spartans para-swimming squad made it at least one final each with eight personal best times recorded over the 24 races that the team contested. USC students and Paralympic debutants Braedan Jason and Jake Templeton provided a highlight for the Spartans on Day 9, swimming alongside each other to finish fifth and sixth in the world in the S12-13 400m freestyle. Veteran Paralympian Rick Pendleton topped off his Games with a fourth place as part of the Australian 34-point medley relay team, while Michael Anderson, Guy Harrison-Murray and 17-year-old Logan Powell also raced strongly across two weeks of competition. The team was supported throughout the Games by coach Jan Cameron, who has led the para-athlete contingent of USC’s High-Performance Swimming Program since it began in 2013. USC sports scientists Professor Brendan Burkett and Dr Danielle Formosa also travelled to Rio as part of the Australian Paralympic team’s official coaching staff.

Dropping a line with the kids By Jack Mangrove WITH the school holidays upon us, the kids will be looking to go for a fish. The Noosa River has been really turning it on, there have been some huge whiting up to 44cm caught around the lower regions of the river. The Dog Beach has been the place to be for the land-based angler with first thing in the morning the most productive. If you have a boat, the Frying Pan is also producing. The 50mm Bassday Crystal Pop is a cracker lure for whiting, this is a sinking popper and really gets down in front of the fish and then can be popped on the surface. On the bait side of things, live worms and freshly pumped yabbies have been the most consistent performers. There have been some monster flathead down towards the mouth of the river. Remember flathead over 75cm MUST be released to the water immediately because they are breeding females. The flathead are mainly feeding on small baitfish and prawns so soft plastics that resemble these will do the job. Mangrove Jacks are also coming on the chew, with those stormy evening the best time to chase them. Structure is also key so fish around the many pontoon and boats in the river. Trevally are still in good numbers and big eye, giant and golden trevally have all hit the decks over the last week. The Noosa Sound and Woods Bays have been the most productive as well as the Ski Runs upriver. On the beach; the tailor are starting to improve in both amount and size. The area between Teewah and Double Island has been very productive as the fish make their way north to spawn. Reports from Frazer Island are also strong with some quality fish taken at the northern end of the Island. Good whiting are also in the closer gutters - small baits like worms, pippies and peeled prawns have claimed some of these delicious table fish. Fishing offshore out of Noosa has noosatoday.com.au

Summer swim to expand THE popular Noosa Summer Swim has announced it will expand to a two-day program for the 2017 event. Now in its fourth year, the Noosa Summer Swim program will expand to include a 5km grand prix event on Sunday 12 February, and organisers expect the new format will attract over 1500 swimmers along with more than 4000 supporters to the region. The new event, a marathon distance swim, will attract Australia’s leading open water swimmers and World Series Swims director John Guise said the new addition was a by-product of the sports growing popularity. “Our participation levels, nationwide, have been growing steadily over the past few years, and now swimmers are looking for new challenges,” he said. “The longer distances, like 5km, are the equivalent of stepping up to a half marathon or a full marathon in running. Naturally, people like to push their limits, so we’ll continue to expand our events and introduce new products.” Since the inception, the Noosa

Summer Swim has attracted an all-star cast of past and present Olympians including Libby Trickett, Emma Snowsill, Jan Frodeno and Ambassdor Michael Klim. In 2016, 1960 Rome Olympics gold medallist and Noosa resident John Konrads, presented the winners trophies alongside Libby Trickett. One of those recipients was Sunshine Coast local and 2016 Rio Olympian, Chelsea Gubecka. Saturday 11 February will offer a similar program of events to past years with short and long courses and the Junior Giants events, designed for kids aged eight to 16 years. Kids also get to swim alongside special guests which in 2016 included Bondi Rescue star Deano Gladstone and Michael Klim. This summer, the Noosa Summer Swim is also lending its support to the fight against kids’ cancer through a new national partnership that will see thousands of swimmers get behind The Kids Cancer Project. It’s been a good season for targeting jew fish offshore and most of the deeper reefs holding good fish. Another fish we are seeing good numbers of are cobia or black king fish. These fish tend to travel in small schools and if you hook one make sure you have another line in the water as there is sure to be another following up the hooked fish. In the fresh water, Lake McDonald is holding good bass in the deeper sections of the dam closest to the wall. This is spawning time for the fish

and their instinct is to run to the open ocean so you will find large schools of the fish towards the barriers. These fish are easily targeted with small vibe or tail spinners slowly worked though the schools. The first ever Gone Fishing Day will be held on 16 October. This is a day when all Australians can get out on the water for a fish and celebrate our love of fishing. It doesn’t matter if you have never fished before, Gone Fishing Day is for everyone.
