Reynolds told the ‘Mail’, earlier this year, the green and gold uniform had always been on her mind since finding her way into the sport.

“Making it to Rio was a goal that was set three years ago for me to work towards, to reach that goal is a big box ticked,” she said.

“It is an amazing achievement for the paracanoe to become a sport in the Paralympics and to be among the first to represent Australia in the sport is wonderful.”

But reaching such lofty heights has not come without sacrifice, with Reynolds completing an intense training and competing schedule.

In the lead-up to the Games, she had been training on the Gold Coast, in addition to regular competition both interstate and internationally.

Reynolds said she couldn’t wait to spend some time with her husband, Wayne, and her two sons, Broc and Tyler.

“The support behind me has just been immense,” she said.

“It’s been a team effort; it’s not just about me, it’s about the group around us.

“I think the boys will be happy to have Mum home for a little bit.”

MACCLESFIELD paracanoeist Amanda ‘AJ’ Reynolds, 44, has clinched a silver medal at the Rio 2016 Paralympics.

After starting her pet event as the gold medal favourite, it took a personal best from UK rival Cindy Dickens to edge out Reynolds in an epic final in the KL3 Women’s 200m paracanoe.

Reynolds qualified fastest for the 15 September final at the Lagoa Stadium course, notching 53.412s in her heat, which was 0.179s faster than Dickens.

The pair put in a great performance in the final, with Dickens’ scintillating 51.348s edging out Reynolds, who raced home to finish in 51.378s.

The final result was a difference of just 0.03s.

After the race, Reynolds couldn’t hide her disappointment.

“Initially, I was like ‘oops’, but I gave it everything I had, so I’ve got to be proud of that,” she said. “(Now it’s) just head down and bum up and start training again.”

Reynolds said she was pleased with how she executed her race plan.

“It was really good ... I didn’t have slumps at both ends (and) the middle was fantastic,” she said.

“But you just give it everything you’ve got.

“So at the end of it, you’ve just got to be happy with what you’ve done.”

For Reynolds, her road to Rio, her first Paralympics, has been nothing short of incredible.

In 2012, she elected to have her right leg amputated after 20 years of complications from a dislocated knee.

Reynolds said she had become addicted to painkillers, which were being used to manage her pain.

After the surgery, she eventually found a love of paracanoeing while competing in the Murray Marathon Challenge.

Reynolds said it was great to be at Rio among the other paralympians.

Parks CEO leaves early

SES needs heavy metal EMERALD SES is on the lookout for cars to help with their road rescue training.

According to the local unit, it is two years since the last course was held and now they have recruits ready to take on the six-month intensive course.

Members are trained in all aspects of road rescue including how to stabilise

vehicles and how to make cuts safely, through to first aid and extrication of patients.

Emerald SES works closely with all the other emergency services in the hills to provide a first-class service to the community.

During the six-month training period, it is envisaged the local unit will need at

least six cars for training purposes and two more for the final assessment.

Emerald SES unit controller Ben Owen encouraged the community to help out.

“If you have a vehicle lying around, maybe with the motor broken, the Emerald unit will gladly take it off your hands and you will know it’s going to be used

for a good cause,” he said.

“Cars do not need to be running or completely intact.

“Providing they can be pushed on four wheels, then the SES can make good use of it.”

LESS than 12 months into his role as chief executive officer of Parks Victoria, Bradley Fauteux has been “asked to resign” from his post.

The Victorian Government has cited allegations of inappropriate conduct, with Environment Minister Lily D’Ambrosio confirming his dismissal late last week.

While an exact reason has not been given, Ms D’Ambrosio has said an independent investigation is being sought, which may involve the Independent Broadbased Anti-Corruption Commission (IBAC).

Mr Fauteux, a French-Canadian, took on the role after leaving his position as managing director of Ontario Parks.

In May this year, the former CEO was among a host of dignitaries to speak at the Yarra Ranges Tourism conference at Yering Meadows Golf Club, along with Melanie De Souza.

Mr Fauteaux had told the audience he saw great potential for nature-based tourism within the region and was excited about his appointment.

Meanwhile, a statement from Parks Victoria’s chair, Andrew Fairly, alleged Mr Fauteux’s conduct breached the authority’s values and ethics and the Victorian public sector code of conduct.

“The constituted a significant failure by him in fulfilling duties and obligations to Parks Victoria as the CEO,” Mr Fairley said.

Parks Victoria’s chief legal counsel, Margaret Gillespie, will stand in as active chief executive officer.

Birds’ line of death

By Jodie Symonds ANGLERS who are incorrectly disposing discarded fishing line at Emerald Park Lake have caused an alarming number of waterbird deaths each year, says Cardinia Shire Council.

Council has asked fisherman to take care when discarding fishing line, as rangers have recently found a number of water birds entangled.

Rangers have raised concern over the use of different types of fishing line, and discourage the use of heavy duty nylon fishing line and high tensile lines such as the Kelvar brand.

Cardinia Shire Council Open Space Team leader Kevin Alexander said rangers were regularly collecting disused fishing lines during routine patrols of the lake.

“The need for rangers to regularly deal with waterbirds ... occurs on an unfortunately regular basis and council believes that approximately four to six birds are affected each year,” Mr Alexander said.

“Some Grebes and Coots have been able to be rescued, but an Australasian darter was not. This is very distressing and unnecessary.”

He said the darter discovered had fishing line tabled around its beak.

Mr Alexander said rangers were working toward minimising potential damage to wildlife caused by recreational activities at the lake including fishing.

Seal the loop boxes have been supplied by Zoos Victoria to provide a safe place to put discarded line.

The bins have been designed to prevent wildlife from pulling rubbish out.

Mr Alexander said the amount of injured water birds was disappointing, considering the number of seal the loop boxes made available for anglers to use.

Signage sponsored by Emerald and District Lions Club has been placed around the lake to alert fishermen of the problems caused by discarded fishing line.

“Our rangers encourage recreational fishers to minimise damage to wildlife at Emerald Lake Park by fishing responsibly and being aware of local bird populations,” Mr Alexander said.

Tree drops in to house

HEAVY spring rains and strong winds caused a falling tree to pierce the roof of a Cockatoo house at 8pm on Tuesday, 13 September.

SES crews were called to the incident, in which the tree had landed “a foot or so” from the home-owners’ bed.

Emerald SES Unit Controller, Ben Owen said the couple had come home to find the tree lodged within the roof.

Fortunately, no-one was home at the time of the incident.

“A tarpaulin was placed on the roof to protect the house from water,” Mr Owen said.

Mr Owen said heavy rain and wind conditions could often occur in spring, but he said it was a warning for people with trees surrounding their houses to be mindful.

“Spring is the biggest time of the year for wind and rain, and this causes the trees to suffer within the wet ground,” Mr Owen said.

“The main thing is to keep check of the trees, and look on the SES Facebook page for updates.”

Briefly RACV crash: charges laid THE question of who rescues the rescuer was raised when an RACV vehicle rolled on the Mount Dandenong Tourist Road on Friday 9 September.

The RACV vehicle was travelling down towards the thousand steps when the driver lost control of the vehicle and collided with the road’s embankment.

A number of car batteries the vehicle was transporting were thrown from the car and spilled battery acid on the road.

CFA were called to the scene of the crash along with the specialist breathing apparatus unit to clean the spill from the road and remove the damaged vehicle.

The driver of the vehicle walked away with no injuries, but was charged and summonsed with unlicensed driving.

Four times the limit A 49-YEAR-OLD man from Silvan will be facing court after registering a BAC of 0.21 and driving with a disqualified licence.

The driver was detected by Olinda police travelling on the Silvan Road on Saturday 10 September during routine vehicle check operations.

The driver was intercepted by police and taken to Belgrave police station where he returned a blood alcohol reading four times over the legal limit.

Under normal circumstances, such a high reading would cause an instant loss of licence, but as the driver was already disqualified from driving, he has been summoned to appear in court.

the offenders, a 25-year-old male from Mooroolbark and a 37-year-old male from Croydon South.

The two men were then placed under arrest for suspicion of being involved in recent burglaries, but the older offender managed to flee.

The younger offender was handed over to Lilydale CIU, and is expected to be charged with burglary offences.

The older offender is still being sought by police and investigations continue.

Clinics ransacked

OLINDA police along with Lilydale Crime Investigation Unit have arrested a man suspected of being involved in the burglary of Kelly’s Bar and Kitchen.

On Wednesday 14 September, Olinda police were alerted that two males were seen loitering in the Mount Dandenong village area.

The two men were followed by members of the public who informed police the men had travelled to the Olinda Tea House car park and appeared to be casing the area.

Police intercepted the two men at the car park and proceeded to question

POLICE are calling for witnesses to come forward, after a car theft and a series of burglaries in Mooroolbark, Lilydale and Mount Evelyn last week.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Adrian Berardi said that between 2.30-7am on Friday 16 September, unknown persons broke into a medical clinic on Alfred Road, Lilydale.

The clinic was searched, but nothing was taken.

A second clinic on Swansea Road in Lilydale was then broken into, with nothing stolen from the premises, before a commercial property on Station

Street, Mount Evelyn, was broken into.

About $500 was taken from the Station Street property, and Det Sgt Berardi said police believed the thief or thieves were linked to a red Holden station wagon, stolen from Bimbi Court in Mooroolbark on the same night.

The car was later found dumped on the corner of Turella Court and Meadowlark Lane in Mooroolbark.

Anyone who might have seen any suspicious behaviour that morning is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or to file a confidential crime report at www.crimestoppersvic.com. au.

Burglary charges for three THREE men will face court after allegedly burgling a commercial property in Wandin North, only to be caught by police a short time later.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Adrian Berardi said that in the early hours of Sunday 18 September, three men allegedly forced entry to a commercial premises on Warburton Highway in Wandin North.

The men are then believed to have stolen $500 in cash, but were located later that morning in Woori Yallock by police.

A 29-year-old Croydon man, a 39-year-old Bayswater man and a 35-year-old Mornington man were arrested, charged with burglary and theft, and remanded to appear at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court at a later date.

Golf bag, buggy stolen A GOLF bag and buggy were stolen from a Lilydale property last week, and police are asking anyone with information - or whose friends suddenly have a new golf bag - to come forward.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Adrian Berardi said that between Friday 9 and Friday 16 September, thieves entered a shed at a property on Edinburgh Road, Lilydale.

The thieves then made off with a golf bag and buggy, worth a total of $600.

Things like fresh sprouts and baby green leafy vegetables can be eaten in moderate

quantities daily.

If you wish to cook your vegies, do them for shorter periods on a higher heat to retain a freshness at the core and use a little water in the pan for a steamed effect.

A side salad with lunch and dinner would be ideal, dressed with a little olive oil, a squeeze of lemon and perhaps a pinch of quality sea salt.

Yum! For those wanting to really give their liver support to naturally cleanse, follow these tips: Reduce or avoid stimulants such as alcohol, caffeine and sugar for a short period; Eat at least three cups fresh vegetables and 2-3 pieces of fruit, these can be in juice; Refrain from deep fried and heated oils, rather consider grilled, steamed or raw; Drink eight large galsses of pure water daily, adding a squeeze of lemon; Take your last meal in the afternoon, giving your body the rest of the day off from having to digest and process food.

This regime can be done for a period of 10 days or so.

Semi-fasting does not suit everyone, though, so if you’re in doubt or if you have other health considerations it would be best to seek advice from a natural health professional.

So there you have it, easy steps to help you step up and into spring with plenty of vigour.

Tourism is set for take-off

By Peter Douglas TOURISM in the Yarra Ranges will take on a vibrant new direction after the launch of a new three-year strategic plan last week.

Incoming Yarra Ranges Tourism chief executive officer, Simon O’Callaghan, helped to unveil the plan at the Meletos Cafe in front of more than 100 guests, which included the Parliamentary Secretary for Tourism and Major Events, Danielle Green.

The plan outlines how the region will work with industry and government to achieve its outcomes.

Ms Green heard key points of the plan at the 12 September open industry event, which included developing strategies to grow midweek overnight visitation, improving digital capabilities, developing further tourism products and adapting to an expected influx of Chinese tourists.

Mr O’Callaghan, who takes over the reins from outgoing part-time CEO Julie Sampson, said it was an exciting time for the region.

He said the event was a great forum through which this excitement could be conveyed.

“It was a great opportunity to give a message as a region,” Mr O’Callaghan said.

“It’s great to have a single plan, with everyone on board and working towards the same goals.

“The turn-out was really great, and that gives us great confidence in moving forward.

“It was also a great reception for those who work behind the scenes.”

He said industry guests travelled to the event from within the Yarra Ranges and nearby regions including Casey-Cardinia and Marysville.

Mr O’Callaghan believed many were on board with the key messages within the plan.

FAMILY support services in Melbourne’s Eastern Metropolitan Region have received a big funding boost, thanks to the Victorian Government.

Eastern Domestic Violence Service (EDVOS) has received $4.65 million in funding from the state as part of the implementation of the Family Violence Royal Commission recommendations.

EDVOS has confirmed the funding will be used to improve access to and management of services and expand the availability of flexible tailored support packages.

EDVOS CEO Jenny Jackson said not only would the funding help the organisation improve their functions but showed they were committed to supporting victims of family violence.

“EDVOS is delighted to receive this budget allocation and is encouraged to see the Victorian Government recognising the need to invest in specialist services,” she said.

“These extra resources will extend our case management capacity to deliver more integrated, individualised planning and support for those responding to family violence.”

Ms Jackson said the funding would also allow EDVOS to offer their services through other channels and created more points of access for people in need.

“We will use part of this funding to enable greater access to EDVOS

through other service providers such as GPs, maternal child health centres, alcohol and drug services, hospitals, community and mental health services,” she said.

Minister for Families and Children Jenny Mikakos and Minister for Housing, Disability and Ageing Martin Foley announced the funding in early September.

Ms Mikakos said the funding would greatly improve the way responses to family violence were handled and go towards changing attitudes towards violence at a community level.

“The lasting impact of family violence and sexual assault can’t be underestimated - and that’s why we’re acting to ensure every victim in Victoria can access the support they need, when they need it,” she said.

“We’re also working to end the vicious cycle of family violence by investing in men’s behaviour change programs across the state.”

Broken up AMENDMENT C148 gives (Yarra Ranges) Council the opportunity to protect the unique heritage of the Dandenongs because it splits up the shire into bit-size pieces; and its governance via ‘Indigenous heritage’ is open to much better local interpretation.

The priorities for protection of our heritage are currently constrained towards the definition of ‘Indigenous’, which has become linked to the Aboriginal point in time.

The Dandenongs' unique heritage, however, is irretrievably linked to European settlement (as well); hence should be protected in its own right.

It’s the European heritage that makes the Dandenongs what they are and why people visit/ live here.

This amendment gives council (and us) the opportunity to preserve it, not destroy it, as we are currently predisposed to (by reverting everything to ‘Indigenous’).

Our voice is important for council to hear, with the amendment open for comments.

Understand dementia IN FERNTREE Gully, research indicates there are 1061 people living with dementia, which is ex-

pected to grow to 4767 by 2050.

During Dementia Awareness Month, which runs throughout this month, Alzheimer’s Australia is calling for greater awareness and understanding of dementia, so people living with the condition feel less isolated and alone.

There are more than 353,000 Australians with dementia and an estimated 1.2 million people involved in the care of someone with dementia.

A survey just released by Alzheimer’s Australia has found that people with dementia are almost twice as likely to have high rates of loneliness, and people with dementia and carers are significantly more lonely than the general population.

We hear repeatedly that when someone is diagnosed with dementia, friendships and some family relationships suddenly disappear because people simply don’t know how to interact with their friend or loved one with dementia.

Treating people with the same respect, kindness, inclusiveness and thoughtfulness you always have is what makes a difference to them.

They are still the same person they were before the diagnosis.

They just may need a little bit more time, understanding and support.

Season opens for firewood COLLECTING firewood from public land is legal again for the spring season, with DELWP opening its firewood collection sites as of 1 September.

The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP)’s forest and fire operations regional manager Peter Kambouris said the spring collection would be open until 30 November.

Residents are able to collect two cubic metres of wood per

person, per day - and only from designated areas, and only from fallen or felled trees.

Each household is entitled to 16 cubic metres per financial year, and it is illegal to sell firewood collected from public land.

Mr Kambouris said DELWP and Parks Victoria staff would be patrolling parks, forests and reserves to make sure people were following collection rules.

Illegally collecting firewood can result in infringement notices of $622 and a maximum penalty of $7773, a year in jail or both.

By Peter Douglas ANYONE who has endured an attack from a swooping magpie knows it can be a terrifying experience.

Particularly if the victim has been caught off-guard.

Which is why the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) has come to the rescue with a new tool to help walkers avoid a tussle with an Australian icon.

During the spring breeding season, the 2016 Magpie Map shows locations where people have been swooped.

The map encourages people to log details about swooping hotspots, including the location and comments about the attack.

Within the Yarra Ranges, swoops already logged include at Myers Creek Road, Healesville; Falls Road, Olinda; Steels Creek Road, Yarra Glen; and King Street, Yarra Glen.

Meanwhile, one poster who logged an incident at Warburton mused the magpie must have been a pterodactyl, joking the magpie was large enough to pick up a small child.

Magpies are renowned for being protective of their young and often swoop if they feel threatened.

According to DELWP, it is important to know your local swooping hotspots so you can avoid the area, or know to move quickly through the area.

If you do need to walk through a known hotspot, make sure to cover your head with a hat, or carry a stick or umbrella above your head.

Yarra Ranges residents are advised to be on the look-out for swooping magpies. 143893 Cyclists are advised to wear a helmet, but dismount and walk through the area.

While many understandably view swooping magpies as a nuisance, it is important not to interfere with their habitat or

throw stones.

Less secrets in council

By Victoria Stone-Meadows YARRA Ranges Councillor Fiona McAllister has called on her fellow councillors and the council’s governance team to decrease the number of confidential items considered by council.

Cr McAllister made an impassioned plea at a council meeting held on Tuesday 13 September regarding the transparency of council dealings.

“This is a topic we have discussed on many occasions in the last four years in different ways, and I put before you a step forward in dealing with information that comes to council,” she said.

“People have greater confidence in decisions that are made in the open, and the perception is that decisions made behind closed doors is something is being hidden.”

Cr McAllister spoke about the benefits of increasing council transparency as well as the trends of other local governments.

She suggested a method called twinned reports, where two copies of a single report are made, and one version is released to the public with only the sensitive information removed.

This would reduce the overall number of items that are considered by council during the confidential portion of the meetings, and give the public more understanding of council processes.

“Taking information back to the public domain and implementing twinned reports would be positive,” Cr McAllister said.

“The trend is heading that way in the sector, is common overseas, stand us in good stead with our community relationships, and brings information out with a gallery present.”

The recommendation was passed unanimously, and Cr McAllister said it was now up to the governance team at the council to work on improving council’s transparency.

Stringer belts sweet tunes

By Peter Douglas MELBOURNE songstress Liz Stringer is set to perform a bunch of sweet new tunes at the Sooki Lounge on Thursday 22 September.

Fresh off the release of her fifth studio album, Stringer is keen to reacquaint herself with her strong fan-base in the region, after a heavy touring schedule which has recently included a two-month stint in Canada.

The ‘Mail’ caught up with Stringer before her Belgrave show, and the singer-songwriter said she couldn’t wait to perform for local crowds.

“It’ll be great to catch up with a few people, but I’m most looking forward to performing with our new line-up and new material from the album,” she said.

“We’re sounding great at the moment, and I’m really enjoying playing shows.”

After four years since the release of her award-winning fourth album, ‘Warm in the Darkness’, Stringer said the new album had left her feeling rejuvenated creatively.

The latest instalment, ‘All the Bridges’, was recorded in just eight days in Portland, Oregon.

“We were able to get in some in-

credible musicians to work on that album,” she said.

“We didn’t have a lot of time to muck around, and I think that actually helped the process.

“I listen back to it now and think, ‘we did pretty good’.

“The songs all sound great and there is cohesiveness throughout the album, which I’m really proud of.”

The new release features prominent Portland mainstays Luke Ydstie (bass) and Ben Nugent (drums) on rhythm section duties.

The result has been described as a vibrant and assured album, playing tribute to the new West Coast sound with the addition of 80s inspired urgency.

Now, local audiences will have the chance to see Stringer’s music and musicianship live.

One constant in her music is not only her silky voice, but her incredible guitar playing.

Interestingly, it is said Stringer started playing the piano before she could talk.

EMERALD GOLF THERE was a break in the rain for a moment, so the lads at Emerald Golf Club girded their loins and hit the course for some Irish four ball.

It is played in pairs using the stableford format with points multiplied at the completion of each hole.

If one person scores 4 points and his partner scores 0, you don’t have to be a raving genius to understand the score is zero and a certain lack of understanding can occur.

It was Steve Town (14) and Ross Martin (14) who stole the show and spoiled the party of those who thought that they scored well.

Their 94 rocked the boats of the rest.

Runners-up were John Keys (17) and Philip Crossley (21) who had the cherrywood out and the ‘bakky’ packed only to find their 80 points did not cut the mustard.

The rest of the pairs were left in disarray but all spoke of things that could have gone better, but didn’t.

Martin was nearest the pin on the 4th, Peter Clowes the 7th, Mark Starick the 12th, Dean Shannon the 13th and Martin pocketed the cash for the pro pin 18th.Of the ladies pairings, it was left to Daisy Mackey and Joanne Carvill to show the way when they combined beautifully for the win.

YARRA VALLEY ATHLETICS THE final round of the XCR16 season was held at the Melbourne Botanical Gardens on Saturday morning.

Excellent weather conditions greeted 14 Yarra Ranges Athletics teams to the Tan Relays, held around the wellknown Tan Track in Melbourne.

With many grade premierships still undecided, the quantity and quality of the teams entered was high.

Yarra Ranges Athletics were well placed in many division with very good hopes in Women’s Division 3, Women’s Division 5 and Men’s Under 14.

Over 320 teams entered the most competitive event on the XCR calendar.

Standout performances came from our younger teams with the Under 16 women winning, the Under 14 Boys finishing third and Under 14 girls finishing fourth.

It is always great to see our up and coming stars performing on the big stage.

The absolute highlight of the day was the debut performances from several ‘new’ members.

Great to see Kate Van Duuren, Graeme Woolridge, Maddie Button, Maddie Laven and Indigo Linde made to feel so comfortable and enjoy their first experience of running at an Av event. Well done and welcome.

Seville A Grade’s big win

By Cameron Hutchison NETBALL - DIVISION 2 GRAND FINALS A GRADE SEVILLE is the 2016 premiers after comprehensively beating Yarra Glen for the first time this season in the Division 2 A Grade netball final at Yarra Glen.

Seville got the early lead by four goals at quarter time and was never really challenged. They extended the lead to eight goals at half-time.

Seville shot six goals in the third quarter, but kept Yarra Glen to only three.

A huge 10-goal last quarter to five finally gave Seville the flag they were after and the title.

Seville 34 def Yarra Glen 18 Seville Best: Tania Hoare (AFL Yarra Ranges Jade Hottes Best on Court Medallist), Zoe Abbruzzese (7 goals), Riley Gentle.

B GRADE Seville have been crowned Premiers for 2016 after a strong eight goal win over Yea. In a tight first quarter, Yea were able to hold a slim two-point lead. The tigers were able to extend their lead to three goals at half time.

Seville was able to control the ball when it was their centre and get some turnovers in the third and the score was all tied up at 25 at three quarter time.

Seville looked the better of the two teams in the last despite their inaccuracy, shooting 15 goals in the last seven minutes to come away with a well deserved eight goal win.

Yarra Glen jumped out of the gates, shooting 11 goals to four in the first quarter.

The scoring was a close affair in the second and their lead was reduced by one at half-time.

Yarra Glen extended their lead by nine goals at three quarter-time.

Shannae Melis and Amy Dennett shot four goals each while the defence held Seville to only three goals.

Seville hit back in the last and outscored Yarra Glen, but the margin was too big to chase down.

FOOTBALL - DIVISION 1 SENIORS PRELIMINARY FINAL Healesville 12.14(86) d Wandin 9.3(57) In very wet and slippery conditions, Healesville has progressed to a grand final berth against Olinda Ferny Creek next week.

Healesville started well and held the lead well into the first quarter, but just on the final siren Wandin kicked a goal and took a five-point lead into the second quarter.

Healesville handled the conditions better pushing the ball forward at all costs.

Jason Savage was proving to be a goal sneak in front of goal and certainly seemed to relish the conditions.

A four-goal-to-two second quarter and Healesville had a lead of nine points at the main break.

Healesville peppered the goals in the third quarter, kicking 2.7 to three straight and the game could have been all but over at three quarter time, but they had given Wandin a sniff and held a slim lead by only 10 points.

Brendon Murphy was playing an inspiring game of football and was unstoppable around the ground.

Wandin were outclassed in the last as Healesville played with a desperation and commitment that if they bring that next week could surprise Olinda.

A four-goal-to-one last quarter put the end to Wandin’s hope for back-toback flags.

The reserves seemed to get the worse of the conditions and scoring was hard for either side.

The ball travelled back and forth between the backlines with little opportunity to score.

Mount Evelyn got an early lead and went into quarter-time after only managing to kick two goals, but they held Healesville to one.

Healesville kicked only one goal in the second quarter, but Mount Evelyn failed to score at all and Healesville had a lead of two points at the main break.

The lead changed again in the third quarter with Mount Evelyn kicking two goals and Healesville only one goal.

The lead was four points at threequarter time and the game was anybodies.

Neither side could manage a major in the last.

Mount Evelyn had the ball in their forward line but could only add fve behinds and get away with a scrappy win by seven points.

Mount Evelyn increased their lead to 22 points at three-quarter time.

Another 2.2 to 1.4 in the last and Upwey’s season was all over.

Wandin were struggling in the conditions in the second quarter kicking 1.2, while Emerald kicked three goals straight to go to a 13-point lead at halftime.

The third quarter was a low-scoring affair, however, Emerald managed to maintain the lead.

The last quarter was goal for goal, but Emerald came away with a 15-point win in the end.

Grand final victor y toast

By Cameron Hutchison DIVISION 2 SENIORS has GEMBROOK-COCKATOO reigned supreme and is Division 2 senior premiers for 2016 after an impressive 39-point victory over Kinglake on Saturday at Yarra Glen.

The conditions were perfect, except for a breeze that was swirly but favoured the river end of the ground.

Gembrook stunned Kinglake in the first quarter, kicking 4.2 while holding Kinglake to six behinds.

Kinglake had plenty of the ball, but the pressure applied by Gembrook from the outset was intense.

Kinglake made a small comeback in the second quarter with the aid of the wind, but Gembrook still managed to kick three goals.

Gembrook’s forward Paul Gramc was the biggest headache for Kinglake, kicking five goals, while Kinglake’s spearheads of Nixon, Mallison and Hibberd were well-held, only kicking two goals between them.

Gembrook added another four goals to two in the premiership quarter, and its lead for the run home was 37 points.

The fat lady certainly had not sung, but she was warming up her vocal cords.

Kinglake could not find the big sticks, kicking 3.6 to 4.1 in the last.

Gembrook-Cockatoo has now earned promotion back to Division 1, after a proud year for the club.

Yarra Glen had the aid of the wind in the second quarter and kicked 3.4 to three goals to reduce the margin to one-point at half-time.

It really came down to the last couple of minutes before they could start celebrating, but a solid 2.4 to Seville’s 1 behind was enough to secure the win.
