By Cam Lucadou-Wells AN UNLICENSED, drug-affected man who rode a stolen motorcycle through red lights during a police pursuit through Casey has told a magistrate he “couldn’t really ride a motorbike�.

Rory Chris Sansom, 24, who had also never been licensed to drive a car, was also charged with driving a stolen vehicle in Cranbourne and stealing a car in Pakenham, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard on 22 August.

Sansom, who was on two community corrections orders at the time, had been spotted by police on the red Kawasaki motorcycle without a rear number plate on Shrives Road, Narre Warren, just after midnight on 1 June.

Police followed with their lights and siren on and saw Sansom look be-

hind twice during the pursuit.

They saw Sansom cross a dividing line and enter a roundabout on the wrong side on Webb Street.

Though keeping under the speed limit, he then rode through a red light turning east on Princes Highway, and another at Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road.

Police had called off the pursuit because of the danger but caught up with Sansom trying to jump-start the motorbike on the side of Princes Highway soon after.

Observed to be “agitated and with dilated pupils and a dry mouth�, Sansom was arrested but refused a drug test at Narre Warren police station.

Sansom told police he had been “trying to do the right thing� by riding the motorbike home for his friend who

the accused claimed owned the bike.

He wouldn’t identify the friend to police, the court was told.

The accused was also charged with driving a stolen Holden sedan in Rouse Street and Hoddle Court, Cranbourne, on 14 May. Sansom produced a receipt to prove he bought the sedan for $800 from a named person.

Police observed that person was not the owner of the car and that the vehicle’s ignition barrel was broken.During a search of the car, police seized two 30-centimetre knives in reaching distance of the driver - which he later claimed were for self-protection.

Sansom had been diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and oppositional defiance disorder since being a young child, a defence

lawyer told the court.

The accused had also abused prescription drugs, ice and GHB, the court was told. “He is someone who needs a more hands-on approach than a corrections order can offer him. “The most concerning matter... is probably that he was affected by a drug at the time.�

Sansom had served 38 days in remand custody including 22-23 hour lockdowns at Port Phillip Prison due to his alleged involvement in the riots at Melbourne Remand Centre last year.

As a result, his mental health had “deteriorated�. He’d been admitted for six days in a mental health ward, his lawyer said.

Sansom replied: “I don’t even know how to ride a motorbike.�

Mr Vandersteen said the behavioural issues coupled with drug use put Sansom at further risk of offending.

Many offenders charged with evading police had ADHD, the magistrate noted. “They don’t slow down and think of the consequences until it’s too late.�

Sansom was jailed for 14 months, with a five-month non-parole period, as well as disqualified from driving for a year.

Mr Vandersteen said a lengthy parole period was needed to ensure Sansom was “engaged and looking after yourself� when released from jail. “It’s difficult. The risk of you driving unlicensed has to be dealt with.�

Shattered home

A BERWICK man who was left shattered by his home being invaded by a carload of burglars is getting even by organising a grass-roots crime-prevention meeting.

The man ‘Brett’, who does not want to be identified, said his family intends to move out of its Beaumont housing estate due to the aggravated burglary on the night of 13 August.

He is still shaken to think at least one intruder had walked past his and his children’s bedrooms just after midnight.

“I can’t sleep. My children can’t sleep. I have a golf club and a cricket bat next to my bed.

“I don’t want to think about some violent bloke coming in to hurt my kids.”

unlocked rear door of the adjoining garage and not woken the family dog until he’d got most of the way through the house.

“The dog scared them.

“I heard them in the garage and I thought they were breaking in.

There was a car load of them out the front.

“It wasn’t until an hour later when the police came in and found my wife’s handbag and car keys out the back. That’s when I realised they must have got in.”

Brett said several other homes in his street were broken into on the same night.

Burglars stole items from a garage as the householders were in their lounge room at 9.30pm that night, he said.

He’s learnt the hard way to lock all the doors and switch on his security alarms.

Brett’s motivation for the meeting is not to promote a vigilante response, nor to have it politicised, but just for the community “look out” for one another.

“People aren’t aware of the extent of these crimes. It has become an epidemic and we don’t think it will happen to us.

“Pay attention to what’s happening at your neighbour’s house as well as our own security.”

“It’s so much bigger than just the Apex Gang. There’s all these other little gangs trying to out-do each other every night and posting their stolen cars on Facebook.”

One of the meeting’s guests is Casey councillor Louise Berkelmans who was a victim of a theft at her Cranbourne North home last weekend.

Tools were taken from her hus-

band’s locked-up car in their driveway. Several neighbours suffered the same fate, on the same night, she said.

“The only thing we can do as a community is to be aware and responsible.”

The event is gathering momentum, with a Casey Residents Crime Prevention Gathering page on Facebook - with more than 400 expressions of interest since 22 August.

The event includes police, Neighbourhood Watch members, and experts on alarms, security door, and self-defence.

The meeting will be held at Sweeney Reserve, Berwick, on Saturday 10 September at 2pm.

YEAR eight student Rachael Nolan from Hillcrest Christian College in Clyde has been selected to represent Australia at the Oceania Artistic Roller Skating Championships.

She will depart along with other members of the Australian team for Whanganui, New Zealand, on Friday 2 September.

The 15-year-old has been skating since she was six years old and is very excited to travel overseas to compete.

“This is my first international competition and I don’t feel like it’s happening,” she said.

“I’m only 15 and I’m getting an Australian track suit.”

Rachael first started skating when her grandfather found a pair of roller skates on a pile of hard waste.

“My grandpa picked them up and took them home where we have a really steep driveway and I wasn’t falling down so skating came pretty naturally to me,” she said.

She will compete in the solo dance category of the competition with a routine that she has worked very

hard on.

“I’m a pirate and will dance to music from Pirates of the Caribbean,” she said.

“My coach picked the music and I think I can embody the character pretty well.”

Sharon Pedro, Rachael’s pastoral teacher at Hillcrest, said the school is very proud of her achievements.

“I’ve been teaching Rachel for two years and she has been an outstanding student and even won a few academic awards,” she said “Rachael practises skating five nights but has never faltered in any of her school work and always stands out and shines.

“We are all really proud of her.”

Rachael said she is nervous about the competition but said skating means so much to her that it’s all worth it.

“I’m excited but I think when I get on the plane I’m going to get pretty nervous.

Nerves are definitely a part of it,” she said.

“Skating just makes me feel really good and there is nothing quite like it. I know that sounds cliché, but it’s just a feeling.”

Medal for our ‘Bond’

By Cam Lucadou-Wells ONE of the men who were the role-models for secret agent James Bond has received a medal for his bravery during the D-Day landings.

Sprightly Welsh-born 92year-old Aneurin (Richard) Ford recently received a French medal of recognition, the Legion D’Honneur, for being part of the key landing at Normandy in World War II. During the war, Mr Ford was part of the revered 30 Assault Unit - a British Royal Marines Commando unit formed to gather intelligence such as the sites of Nazi V1 rocket sites and Enigma code machines.

The unit was the brainchild of Ian Fleming, then stationed in Whitehall, who later became famous as the author of James Bond books.

Mr Ford said that Fleming had modelled the unit on a similarly clandestine German unit which advanced ahead of the frontline and without any support such as a medical officer.

“If we were ever caught, the government would know nothing about us,” he said.

He, though, never attends Anzac Day or Remembrance Day ceremonies.

“We had a job to do and we done it. I don’t like the fuss and bugger.”

As well as his own collection of medals, he souvenired and later sold off Nazi regalia such as elaborate daggers, a sword and helmet.

Mr Ford is among the last standing in his old unit.

He shows off a wealth of photos and news clippings from when he attended the unit’s final march in the UK in 2000.

He says the biggest shame about receiving his latest medal from the French Government is that it came so late.

It has only recently been extended to non-French nationals who are still alive.

Twenty years after WWII, Mr Ford moved with his late wife Pat and four children to Springvale. He worked as a dipper for BP until retiring in 1984.

Mr Ford still plays bowls in Springvale and travels the world with a spirit of adventure, making world luxury cruises an annual event.

In a few weeks, he is off again on his latest worldly mission - a wedding in Spain.

Not to mention his womanising and hard drinking - though all of them drank pretty heavily, Mr Ford said.

“When he wrote James Bond, he just rolled up the entire (30 Assault) unit into one man and called him James Bond.

“I never read his books but I enjoyed the movies.”

The unit’s missions have also been the subject of countless books and several movies such as Age of Heroes and Operation Crossbow.

Mr Ford, who was conscripted into the war as an 18-year-old, recounts his missions in France with relish, humour and clarity.

There were plenty of times when he was scared for his life, such as when he drove next to a three-tonne truck that triggered an unexploded shell on the ground.

“How did we survive?

That truck just took the lot.”

Miraculously, one of the truck’s four occupants was recovered alive and delivered on a make-shift stretcher to a US medical station.

Race ban for live bait cruelty THREE prominent greyhound racing identities have been disqualified for five years from owning or training racing greyhounds after pleading guilty to live-baiting at the former Tooradin Trial Track.

During the hearing Frankston magistrate Rodney Crisp said the men were “habituated to cruelty” and that referees for one of the accused had not shown any remorse for the mistreatment of the bait animals.

Stuart Mills, 40, the former owner of the track, was also ordered to perform 150 hours of community work after pleading guilty to 12 animal-cruelty charges at the Frankston Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 18 August.

Mills, who has since sold the track and moved out of his next door house, was charged with keeping a premises for the purposes of baiting or maltreating an animal.

He was also charged with aggravated cruelty to a rabbit used as live bait and other animal cruelty charges involving a live pig and multiple live rabbits being chased and attacked by greyhounds as a training technique between November 2014 and January 2015.

His father Anthony Mills, 64, was also given a 150-hour unpaid work order after pleading guilty to a live-baiting charge and an animal cruelty charge for operating a mechanical lure tethered with a live rabbit in January 2015.

Both father and son had already received life-bans from Greyhound Racing Victoria.

Former Australian trainer of the year Darren McDonald, 47, received a twoyear good behaviour bond with conviction after pleading guilty to using a live pig as a greyhound lure at the track in November 2014.

McDonald is appealing what is effectively a 10-year industry ban from GRV.

The court was told that the three accused were captured in an Animals Australia covert video surveillance using cameras planted at the track and outside the premises.

The footage showed live animals harnessed to a lure and chased and mauled by greyhounds.

During a RSPCA and police search of the track, Stuart Mills at first denied live-baiting occurred before being confronted with the video footage, the court heard.

The court was shown video of Mills loading a kicking rabbit to a mechanical lure that was then chased down by a greyhound on 11 November 2014.

After the lure had done a circuit, the dog caught up and began mauling the rabbit. Its head remained twitching and its bones were exposed in its half-eaten torso.

In another instance, Mills was described as swinging a live rabbit on a lead in a large arc to entice greyhounds to attack.

He continued to hold onto the lead as a greyhound attacked it, then loaded it onto a lure for a greyhound to chase.

McDonald of Devon Meadows was filmed taking a pig out of a hessian sack and helping to load it onto a lure at the track.

The pig survived a pursuit by dogs and was put back into the sack.

McDonald’s lawyer said his client, who is afflicted by Parkinson’s disease, was remorseful for the damage done to the industry and was unlikely to work in it again.

He was reputed to care deeply for his dogs ensuring they were found homes after their racing careers were over, his lawyer said.

Magistrate Rodney Crisp noted none of McDonald’s industry referees, including a former Greyhound Racing Victoria chief executive, had stated any remorse

“They just say the dogs were treated well. They didn’t talk about the rabbits or the pig.”

Mr Crisp said the accused men were long “habituated to cruelty” and was not convinced rehabilitation was a possibility.

He said he wasn’t swayed by the public uproar and opprobrium directed at the men since their actions were shown on last year’s Four Corners expose.

“General deterrence does not take a back seat to leniency and certainly doesn’t take a back seat to what’s happening in the court of public opinion.”

The magistrate said detection of the offences was difficult at the remotelysituated track, requiring efforts of “pretty gritty” volunteers to bring the men to justice.

He said the accused men had enjoyed “comfortable lives” on the back of “practices that appear to be endemic and unacceptable”.

“It has to be said the treatment of the bait animals was repugnant.

“This must have been a risk worth taking. It appears there’s no progress in the (greyhound) racing business without live baiting.”

Mr Crisp said suspended sentences for the Mills pair were the most appropriate terms but he was no longer allowed to hand them down.

As part of the three accused men’s five-year disqualification, they are still allowed to keep greyhounds as pets.

Lawrence Cunningham, a former assistant at the track facing more than 40 charges, did not appear at the hearing.

He was expected to front Frankston Magistrates’ Court with another 15 coaccused on 24 August.

RSPCA prosecutor Inspector Daniel Bode said the RSPCA and the State Government would consider the sentences and “respond shortly“.

It’s no wonder violent criminals are running rampant in Victoria.

There is possibly nothing more traumatic than losing a loved one to murder and not having their body to lay to rest.

Imagine the lives of the family of Katie Lee Tanner from Cranbourne North who was killed in 2006 by Keith Smart who has never revealed the location.

Or the lives of the family of Prue Bird who was killed in 1992 by Leslie Camilleri who said the body was in a Frankston tip but it was never found and he refused to say any

more. Convicted killers who refuse to disclose where the body of their victim is do not deserve to be considered for parole.

A convicted killer can’t claim to be rehabilitated and remorseful if they fail this most basic test of human decency.

This policy is a no-brainer and it is a disgrace that Daniel Andrews, together with Labor and Greens MPs, voted against it.

IT WAS a less than appetising sight for unfortunate Hungry Jacks dinner patrons in Narre Warren about six months ago.

Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard that after about 30 minutes of banging and cussing in a disabled toilet, a 40-year-old man emerged wearing a T-shirt and black jocks.

The man allegedly let it all hang out of his undies, groaning, rubbing and holding his exposed genitals as he approached customers chewing on their meaty meals.

He tucked his goods and his hand inside his pants as he spoke to staff members then filled himself a cup of drink at a self-serve counter.

The man then took a large amount of serviettes with him into the toilets prior to being escorted out by police.

During his interview with police, he denied publicly masturbating.

He said: “I don’t have a penis for a start.

If they saw it they must have a magnifying glass.”

The court was told the man used ice three times a week for pain relief due to a chronic workplace injury to his back.

The man’s lawyer explained the man was homeless at the time and needed to change his dirty pants in the toilet.

A MAN has received a good-behaviour bond after revealing a litany of woe during a family-violence case at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court.

The 23-year-old accused had his right hand amputated and his left arm incapacitated after he received an electric shock while he was chased by a youth gang at a railway station in 2014.

He told the court his mother ceased being his carer when he received a $200,000 payout for his injuries. She took the money

and ran up to Lake Eildon to buy a house, he told the court.

The man had been charged over bashing down a bedroom door at his sister’s Dandenong home.

“I just want to check my belongings so my older sister can’t steal any more from me.”

The man, who doesn’t receive an income or pension, was ordered to seek help from Salvo Care as part of his bond without conviction.

By Cam Lucadou-Wells KEEN to ditch any comparisons to New York's The Bronx, Casey Council will lobby to tow away stolen registered vehicles just a week after they’re dumped on roadsides and nature strips.

Mayor Sam Aziz, who raised the proposal at a 16 August meeting, said under state law registered owners had at least 60 days to collect their misappropriated cars before the council could tow the vehicles

away. It was a “ridiculous and unnecessary” waiting period to remove often unsightly burntout vehicles, he said.

Cr Aziz said the council should be able to act sooner because it didn’t want its neighbourhoods to “look like The Bronx”.

“We care very much about the appearance of our neighbourhoods”.

Under the push, the council will request Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins to amend the law so “registered

but illegally parked” vehicles could be removed after seven days.

Councillor Louise Berkelmans asked the meeting if an owner could get an extension if they had difficulties removing their cars within a week.

A council officer replied that if an owner rang the council, “we will accommodate that if possible”.

Cr Aziz responded that “we certainly don’t want extensions of time”.

Lovett leads state equestrian team

By Victoria Stone-Meadows GABRIELLE Lovett from Hillcrest Christian School has been selected as captain of the state equestrian team and will lead the team at the upcoming National Equestrian Interschool Championships.

Ms Lovett has been riding horses and training with them for eight years, but really got into competition riding after attending Hillcrest.

Elected jumps captain last year, Ms Lovett has put in a lot of hard work and training to get the position of overall captain this year.

“I am honoured to be captain,” she said.

“I have put in a lot of hard work over the last two years in particular, and it has all paid off.”

Ms Lovett has completed VET Equine Studies units one through four and currently is undertaking a track riding apprenticeship while at school.

She says being selected captain of the Victorian team will be great for her future job prospects as well as for her personal development.

“It’s great for future job opportunities, but also a great way to help other people,” she said.

“I can be a role model for the younger riders and set a good example; it’s a lot of responsibility but I’m up for the challenge.”

Gabrielle Lovett’s mother Debra is Equestrian manager at Hillcrest and says she is very proud of her daughter and what she has chosen to do.

“I have a daughter who, on a Friday and Saturday night, is up cleaning, pre-

paring, and packing for events,” she said.

“Her riding and her dedication has really positive lifestyle benefits.”

Ms Lovett said getting to where she was now would not have been possible without the support of her coach and her family.

“My coach Paul Williams is an amazing coach, and has helped me and other kids gain knowledge, confidence, and skills like no other,” she said.

“Of course my older sister Rachael who has let me ride her horses and use her gear and my dad has been really supportive, too.”

Ms Lovett and her team will travel to Horsley Park in Sydney for the National Equestrian Interschool Championships from Sunday 25 September to Thursday 29 September.

A MAN allegedly discovered with four bags filled with cigarette lighters, cigarettes, phone chargers and assorted goods in a Hampton Park shop has argued he had been accidentally locked inside the store.

Aaron Raymond Greenwood was refused bail during the hearing at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 22 August.

Police informant Sergeant Kim Staples of Cranbourne police told the court that Greenwood - who “had a serious drug habit” - had allegedly hid in an Uncle Buck’s store as it was locked up on 21 August.

The court was told the accused allegedly collected $2420 of goods after staff had left the store.

Greenwood then allegedly triggered a silent alarm when he broke into a next-door bottle shop through an adjoining roller door, Sgt Staples said.

In the Bottle-O Splash Liquor store, Greenwood allegedly added $155 of cigarettes and a can of Red Bull to his haul.

A bottle-shop staff member, alerted by the alarm, returned to the store and confronted Greenwood - who then hid in Uncle Buck’s before his arrest by police.

Greenwood, who represented himself, told the court he had been stuck inside Uncle Buck’s after being locked inside.

“The only reason I went to Bot-

tle-O was for the alarm to go off so I could get out.

“I threw out the cigarettes (to the returning staff member) and hoped I could go home but he called the police.”

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen told Greenwood: “I don’t believe what you said to me.”

Greenwood, who said he used ice and GHB, was on bail at the time over other theft matters in June and July.

Some of those charges related to him allegedly using a stolen drivers’ licence to test drive - and not return - a vehicles from a Dandenong car yard.

He was also accused of using the stolen licence to attempt to take out a $5000 bank loan in Frankston.

There was also an outstanding warrant for failing to appear in court on 16 August on charges of disqualified driving and using an unregistered vehicle.

Mr Vandersteen said Greenwood was accused of an “escalating” series of offences on six separate occasions since being put on a community corrections order in late April.

“Things are completely out of control at the moment,” Mr Vandersteen said.

“On the face of it, the prosecution case is strong.

“I wouldn’t consider releasing you without significant supports in place.”

The improved vegie garden and the rest of the village will be opened to the public at a free family-friendly open day on Saturday 27 August.

Life-long horticulturalist Margaret Phillips is excited about the continued growth of her retirement community in Rochester Parade, Cranbourne East.

Anti-drug unit

By Casey Neill A 20-STRONG police taskforce is tackling drug crime in Greater Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia.

Detective Senior Sergeant John Bergin has been tasked with setting up the Southern Metro Division 3 divisional response unit.

“I think it’s fair to say that the whole division is impacted greatly by drug-related crime,” he said.

“It’s recognised that it’s a driver of a lot of your serious and volume crime. We’re hellbent on targeting that. It’s a real focus for the division.”

The unit is based at Dandenong Police Station and will

work across the three police service areas.

“Essentially, our role will be targeting drug issues across the division,” Sen Sgt Bergin said.

“I’ll also be running a fugitive team where we’ll be targeting our most wanted people who are avoiding apprehension.”

He said this would include people with warrants issued for their arrest, people who’ve failed to appear on bail, and people wanted for crime.

“They’re people we feel will still be causing harm in the community,” he said.

“We’re targeting them amongst our drug focus as well.

“Traditionally, each police

“We obviously rely on public information,” he said.

The victim ran to the front of the house to pursue the thieves to see them leaving the property in the victim’s car.

Machete threat scare for Cockatoo man A RESIDENT of Bimberry Circuit in Clyde had the fright of his life on Wednesday 17 August when he confronted three would-be thieves in his back yard. The victim was woken shortly after midnight to a loud noise and went to the rear door of his house to investigate the source of the noise.

The victim saw three African appearing males in the yard trying to gain access to the garage so he called out and made them aware of his presence.

One of the offenders approached the door where the resident was standing and loudly banged in it, holding a machete in his other hand.

AN AUDIENCE of more than 200 people was moved by the soaring voices of massed choirs during Saturday’s performance of Street Requiem at the Cranbourne Community Theatre.

Street Requiem was composed by Kathleen McGuire, Andy Payne and Jonathon Welch as a tribute to those who have died on the street.

Mr Welch said he conceived Street Requiem to bring a sense of peace, remembrance and hope to communities struggling to come to terms with street violence, war and loss of community safety.

Casey was the host choir and sang I Dreamed a Dream from Le Miserables.

Casey’s sister choir the Latrobe Valley Community Choir then sang an arrangement of Bridge Over Troubled Waters.

Both choirs were then joined by a massed choir featuring members of Western Health and THE CHO!R to sing the remaining songs in the first half of the concert.

All four choirs are associated with the School of Hard Knocks.

Voices of Casey manager Paulien George said Street Re-

quiem was a “huge success�. “Many of the members of the audience commented that they were so pleased to see a concert of this calibre come to Melbourne’s south east and be performed during the daytime and over a weekend, Ms George said.

Voices of Casey has 50 members and practices under the musical direction of Jonathon Welch each Monday at Fiddlers Green Retirement Village in Berwick.

A DECADE OF SUCCESS HARVEST Realty at Hampton Park will celebrate 10 successful years in the real estate industry this week.

ATO exposes dodgy deductions WITH more than 8 million Australians claiming work-related expenses each year, Australian Tax Office Assistant Commissioner Graham Whyte is reminding people to make sure they get their deductions right this tax time.

“Australians claim over $21 billion in work-related expenses each year, and we want to support taxpayers to claim what they are entitled to - no more, no less,” Mr Whyte said.

“Most Australians want to do the right thing, but we are seeing mistakes, and while the amounts at an individual level are relatively small, collectively the overall impact is significant.

“That’s why it is important for people to get their deductions right.

“From time to time we see people deliberately making incorrect claims.

“We’ve seen claims for car expenses where log books have been made up and claims for self-education expenses where invoices were supplied for conferences that the taxpayer never attended.

“Deliberately making incorrect claims is an easy way to get into some serious trouble. It’s just not worth it.”

Mr Whyte said while most tax agents are there to help tax payers do the right thing, sometimes the ATO identifies tax agents offering special deals, inflating claims to generate larger refunds.

“If it sounds too good to be true - it usually is.

“The ATO takes action against tax agents who make dodgy claims but to protect yourself make sure your tax agent is registered. You

can check on the Tax Practitioners Board website.”

Mr Whyte said in 2014-15, the ATO conducted about 450,000 reviews and audits of individual taxpayers, leading to revenue adjustments of more than $1.1 billion in income tax.

“Cases involved omitted income or over-claimed entitlements like deductions.

“This included people making claims significantly different to those made by taxpayers in similar circumstances,” Mr Whyte said.

“Every tax return is scrutinised using increasingly sophisticated tools and data analytics developed by our Data Doctors at the ATO. “This means we can identify and review income tax returns that may omit information or contain unrea-

Let’s talk about sex

By Georgia Westgarth MORE often than not, Dandenong prostitute ‘Kati’ offers her clients companionship, not sex.

The 23-year-old mother of one has been a working girl since she was 18, and told The Journal “people get lonely”.

When asked what her job entails Kati said “just having a chat is more common than not”.

“A lot of the time it’s more companionship. Probably 50 to 75 per cent of my job involves no sex at all,” she said.

“It’s a brothel, you think it’s the sex industry you must have sex, but not at all.

“I sit around talking, helping people through their own little dramas, just being able to talk through any issues they have with someone who’s completely objective.”

But the companionship Kati describes also involves massage and “relaxation” she calls it - a type of relaxation which pulled her off the streets.

An unstable childhood and close to

a year of homelessness forced Kati to advertise herself on Gumtree, an online buy and sell platform.

Kati advertised herself with a written resume looking for any line of work.

“I was 18, in between school and trying to find a job and really struggling to work it all out,” Kati said.

“I got an email from a lovely woman who laid everything out on the table for me, links to all the laws and regulations so I could see that everything (the paid sex industry) was above board.”

At that point Kati had been out of an unsafe home environment since she was 15 years old and in time the brothel would provide a safe haven for her in between homes.

“I had all the media stereotypes in my head and it scared me,” Kati recalled of her first shift at a Moorabbin brothel.

“I stood on the steps of my very first place for about half an hour before walking inside but after three weeks of work I said ‘this is nothing like what the media perceives it to be, nothing’.”

Kati calls her current work place, Garden of Eden (GOE), a family.

“Girls come and go but the owner here has seen me at my best and most darkest points and she’s definitely like another mum. At times I just call her mum and annoy her with it,” Kati said, laughing.

“If I can, I come into work on Christmas Day. Everyone in here is family whether it be clients or girls - it’s very humbling to know that no matter what job you do you are still human and loved and respected.”

Kati met her partner on an online escort chatroom and reviews forum called Punter Planet and said one of the best things about their relationship was the understanding.

“He is an escort himself, we’ve been together almost three years and if I’ve had a bad day at work I know I can turn to him and he’ll understand what I’ve gone through so that’s really great,” Kati said.

With a three-year-old autistic son in childcare during the day, Kati said the money she earned through prostitution

means the right kind of education for her his future.

“I rent and the money I make is very, very sufficient,” she said.

“There are a lot of high costs associated with my son, for example he needs a weighted blanket to sleep that’s $200 alone, that without this job I would have been scraping at straws to get.”

Kati’s job is also paying for her course in naturopathy and she said the GOE managers were very helpful in educating the girls on ways to maximise their finances.

“I’ve had periods where I haven’t worked, once for seven months and I could sustain myself with money I’d saved, it’s about being smart with it but for some people the money can be a trap,” she said.

Kati said she has learnt not to get too close to her clients.

“In some ways, yes they are friends but over the years there has been times where I’ve spent four years getting to know somebody and all of a sudden they’ve hit me with really hard news

to take.

“And that hurts, when you really care about someone and they tell you they’ve had suicidal thoughts so you have to filter it so it doesn’t end up affecting your own daily life,” she said.

It’s the job that keeps Kati out of debt but one she said she won’t do forever and one not many people know she does.

“My housemates know what I do, my family don’t just because they have in the past and it caused issues so they think I do something different now,” she said.

Kati’s regulars range from all ages but she’s not fond of the Gen Y clients.

“I’m not fussy, but I try and avoid 18 and 19-year-olds. For me they seem really cocky,” she said.

On the profession she calls “awesome”, Kati said it was not what most people thought.

“I love this job, every working girl has each other’s back.”

Series sparks red light

Story was full of surprises STAR News Group was surprised to receive a negative backlash from some readers after five human interest stories were published on southeast sex workers and the owner of a Dandenong brothel.

The articles were printed across the group’s south-east mastheads, according to the locality of the interview subjects.

Some readers found the series insightful, but others were mortified by the topic.

It’s an issue general manager at Inner South Community Health (ISCH), Sue White can shed some light on.

After seven years with ISCH, which ran a program called RhED - a state wide service which supports sex workers - Ms White admitted the subject of paid sex could be a “contentious” one.

But she said the series highlighted what sex workers maintained to be their “number one issue”.

“A sex worker’s first issue is the misconceptions, stigma and discrimination they experience,” Ms White said.

“So by writing articles like Star News did, which portrays sex workers as people - somebody’s sister, mother, doing their job - you’re in some ways helping to reduce that stigma and discrimination they feel.

“We would support well-rounded, honest articles about sex workers, that don’t sensationalise.

“It’s a contentious, emotional space and I understand that, and it has been for 4000 or so years and will be unfortunately for another few years yet.

“I do understand why people feel uncomfortable with the combination of sex and money as a job, but they don’t understand the implications for the worker.”

Casey Neighbourhood Watch chairperson and former pastor Robert Ward was one of the first to object to the subject matter.

“It certainly suits the industry to have such a ‘Pretty Woman’ picture painted, but there is a darker, human side to the story,” Mr Ward wrote.

I’d just spent four hours sitting in a brothel, interviewing in turn four working girls and the owner.

“I got the full tour - dungeon and all,“ I told the newsroom on my return.

You don’t often see a room full of journos rendered silent and left hanging on every word.

“You captured the attention of the entire newsroom - that’s never been done before,” my editor said.

No, I thought, I hadn’t captured anybody.

Lacey, Carmen, Kati, Hayley and Tanya had.

It was their stories everyone was hanging on.

But the fact I got to tell them was exhilarating.

The working girls I met that day broke any stereotypes I had in my head about sex workers, and in turn everyone I spoke to about my experience.

The dirt, the drugs, the abuse - just weren’t there.

It’s not that I didn’t look for them. It’s not that maybe they don’t exist in other places. It’s just that, in this series of five interviews on that day, those judgements weren’t validated.

The girls I spoke to - some my own age were not boorish. They were articulate, edu-

brothels, yes it may be possible for girls in some cases to leave whenever they wish. But not everyone can leave. Ask those in debt-bondage.

“However, what must be exposed is the dark underbelly of prostitution. Please do not be conned by the glamourous picture painted by these articles.”

I walked up those stairs feeling a hundred miles away from the paid sex industry and left feeling much the same as most people would - satisfied.

Satisfied, that I had done my job, satisfied that I could tell their stories accurately and with heart and satisfied that they deserved to be told in the local newspaper.

With the brothel’s house cat playfully jumping in and out of a tall vase next to me, as I put questions to the girls and heard their stories, I soon realised what I was listening to.

Yes, they answered all my gory questions and they told it like they saw it, but it was the elements of human nature that stood out to me the most.

With all the trimmings of a brothel, it was how the girls and their clients managed from day to day that ended up being the most interesting.

Human nature wasn’t what I thought I’d leave with, but human nature it was.

I learnt that some people came knocking on the brothel door to try and save their marriages, or add some flavour. And one working girl told me how she did end up saving a marriage.

It took just a short chat with a sex worker for this man to realise that he didn’t want what he came there for, and he ended up racing home to his wife with a fresh perspective on his marriage. That was just one anecdote that surprised me.

But some readers were challenged by the overall topic, and some even confronted by the way it was put together. No drive-by shootings, just the person behind their job.

Some readers felt the series somehow glamourised the role: a sort of “Pretty Woman“ in print.

But in fact I was just doing what I do every day: interviewing people, questioning them, and telling their stories.

And that’s cause for celebration, not fear.

The joy of journalism is finding these hidden surprises - and readers should relish the discoveries.

We acknowledge that some of this material can challenge what locals might think they should be reading about in their “community” newspaper.

But isn’t it better to know, than to wonder - especially when it concerns your local area?

And in these instances how they got to where they are now - was then - and still is fascinating.

It’s my job to report on the world as it is, even if that is found to be distasteful by some.

I’ve written about so many empowered men and women throughout the south-east, who have so many captivating tales to tell and these five women - in my eyes - were no different.

My job is to give readers as much truth as I can. And my colleagues and I will continue to present the facts as they are - and not as some might wish them to be.

Nothing will stop Ava WHEN she pulls on her Casey Cavaliers jersey and takes the court, Ava Beck feels amazing.

The weight of the world lifts off her shoulders and she can focus on the one thing that matters most - solid defending and helping her Cavs get another Melbourne United VJBL victory.

That’s no easy feat considering the difficult 2016 she’s going through.

Ava, 10, from Berwick, was told earlier this year she had epilepsy after a string of seizures eventually led to a diagnosis.

She’s been in and out of hospital this year, as her doctors try to get her medication balanced and give her the best chance of living uninhibited by her condition.

It’s meant Ava had to spend a lot of time out of class at Berwick Primary School.

School has been difficult this year - often she’s too tired to go - but she finds the energy each week to take to the court and it helps boost her spirits and most importantly ... she feels better every time she’s out there with her Cavs’ team mates and friends.

“Yeah I still play even if I feel sick,” Ava said. “When I feel all tired and stuff, I still want to play.

“Because I love basketball and playing with my friends.”

She hasn’t had as much energy as she used to, but no matter what, getting to training and preparing for Friday night is special and she’ll never let her epilepsy halt her basketball.

Every Friday you’ll find number 63 on court around the state in the Melbourne United Victorian Junior Basketball League (MUVJBL) as the dogged defender sticks like glue to her opposition in the Under 12 Girls R2 East competition.

“They like having me in their team and like me playing with them and I

just like playing,” Ava said. “I like getting some goals - I normally do defence so I don’t get a lot of goals.”

Basketball is the escape Ava relishes - she puts her thoughts and worries to the side and only thinks about the next play, stopping the next opponent and celebrating properly with her best mates.

“I don’t think about it (her epilepsy) - I just think about playing,” Ava said. “I do feel better when I’m training or playing.

“I don’t like missing training and I’ve got really good coaches who help me get better in my domestic games too.”

She’s made the step up from the Berwick Panthers domestic team and has loved playing MUVJBL and domestic basketball every weekend.

She even got on court for Berwick Primary School with Hoop Time, as her team narrowly missed out on winning its tournament.

“We were in the boys all stars only three girls and didn’t verse any other girls - and we got to the grand final and we were runners-up,” Ava said.

That love of the game across any competition or grade has given Ava a perfect record - even when it would’ve been easy to sit on the sidelines for a week or take a well-earned breather, she’s not missed a MUVJBL game this year.

The MUVJBL campaign is too important to her - she couldn’t stop until her season was done.

“Basketball is the only thing she’s been able to do for the last few weeks - she hasn’t been able to go to school, but she was able to play,” Ava’s mum Lisa Beck said. “It helps get her out and about and keeps her happy. Team spirit is good in basketball at Casey Cavs - and more so when something like this happens you really notice the bond that they have.”

Onwards and upwards for Cavs

By Russell Bennett THE Casey Cavaliers are no strangers to achieving incredible things in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds.

Stewart Baird’s Big V basketball Division 1 men’s side last Sunday afternoon defeated a Blackburn Vikings outfit that had won a staggering 22 games in a row prior. Their last loss came way back in the opening round of the season against fellow powerhouse Warrnambool, but in Sunday’s preliminary final Baird’s men won the battle of attrition.

In front of a crowd that spilled well beyond the available seats on Court 4 at the State Basketball Centre, the Cavs won a brilliantly entertaining, yet physical, contest 85-77.

Big man Dean Johnson got off to a strong start in the paint - both offensively and defensively - in the opening stanza but the Cavs couldn’t break free of the Vikings despite going at nearly 54 per cent shooting from the floor.

The home team got out in transition at every opportunity - with six more field goal attempts for the game, and 11 more shots at the charity stripe.

After leading by just three at quarter time, the Cavs found themselves down six early in the second as the Vikings pushed the tempo to new levels.

But as the quarter wore on, the visitors began to match them in that area with strong rebounding leading to quick outlet passes and fast break buckets of their own. All told, they restricted Blackburn to just two offensive boards for the quarter.

In a physical battle, Ben Louis was again outstanding on Vikings star Brendan Trewella, who finished the game with 23 points but on just 3-10 from the field.

In a sign of the physical intensity of the game in the first half, only one three point attempt was made from the two sides combined.

After leading by four at the main break, Blackburn jumped ahead by eight early in the third before Casey guard Mitch Chapman - who, along with a host of other Cavs players, had battled illness during the week - sprung to life. He finished with 20 points for the contest on 50 per cent shooting including 2-3 from downtown. He was the visitors’ barometer, particularly

after Blackburn guard Nick George went down with a left knee injury in the third.

The Cavs led by a point with a quarter left to play before ultimately prevailing by eight points thanks to standout efforts from Brent Hobba (18 points, 10 boards) and Matt Witherden (11 points, 13 boards, 5 assists and 2 blocks).

“I’m really proud of the boys,” Baird said after the final buzzer.

“They’re a great shooting team but we’ve really focussed the last month on just challenging every shot on the floor - no matter how far away you are, go and challenge that shot.

“The other thing we spoke about pre-game and at practice was that all the pressure was at their at end - 22 wins in a row. We’ve been in that position - we walked into a finals series last year having won 17 on the trot and coughed it up, so we know that sort of pressure.

“We knew that if we could hang with them or even put a bit of a lead on the board that it would impact them mentally.”

“Getting the home one is going to be very important for us because down there they’re tough as hell,” Baird acknowledged.

“I don’t think they’ve lost at home,

so we need to get the home one and put some pressure them. It’s a three-game grand final series so anything can happen.”

The Cavs’ Division 2 women’s side begins its own grand final series this weekend as well, traveling to Melbourne University to take on the home side from 7pm on Saturday. Game two is back at Cranbourne at 7.30pm on 3 September, with the third game (if needed) also at Cranbourne from 12.30pm the following day.

THOMAS Randle took the rookie honours at the Zandvoort Masters of Formula 3 last weekend as he competed in FIA European F3 machinery for the first time.

Randle, from Narre Warren North, was one of four drivers who have competed in the BRDC British Formula 3 Championship this year to race in the prestigious Masters event at the Dutch circuit.

“It was really good. It was a steep learning curve and a bit of an eyeopener but we had no big expectations going into the weekend,” said Randle who competed for Double R Racing.

“The competition was through the roof and you are up against some of the best drivers in Europe so it is a big challenge. By the end of the weekend we had stepped up though and to finish as the top rookie was awesome.”

Randle was joined by Carlin racers Colton Herta and Ameya Vaidyanathan, whilst Harrison Scott, who has competed in BRDC British F3 with HHC Motorsport, received a late call-up to replace British F3 race-winner Nikita Mazepin, who was ill, at Hitech GP. “It was good to have Harrison in the field as he is always a good target,” Randle said.

“To finish just above him was good. I was happy with my pace by the final race and I was glad to finish both races and enjoy a bit of consistency.”

The result was all the more impressive given that Randle hadn’t tested prior to the event, his only experience in an FIA European F3

“We didn’t have any testing and Double R hadn’t raced the car since Macau last year. All the other teams had been to Zandvoort before and heading into qualifying we had only done 20 laps,” the 20-year-old commented.

Randle finished the second race of the weekend in 11th, one place ahead of Scott in 12th with Herta and Vaidyanathan 13th and 15th respectively. Double R Racing boss, Anthony Hieatt, was impressed with Randle’s performance.

“We’re very pleased with how Thomas performed throughout the weekend, he did a very good job on his first time out in the FIA-spec Dallara,” Hieatt said.

“It was very much a case of being in at the deep end without much in the way of testing, but he approached the weekend very professionally and to come away as the top rookie was a great result.”

After his Zandvoort experience, the focus is very much back on to the BRDC British F3 title fight now for Randle, as he sits third in the

overall standings, 51 points adrift of championship leader Ricky Collard.

“It was good to get away and have a weekend with relatively little pressure. There was no expectation on me so I was just trying to improve but now the focus is back on British F3. I am really looking forward to Donington Park now!”

The final round of the 2016 BRDC British Formula 3 Championship takes place at Donington Park on 10-11 September.

‘WE’RE not good enough ... yet.’

It’s the mantra that Carlton senior coach Brendan Bolton took to the club when he was first appointed in his role, and it’s the same mantra that Scott Gowans has taken into his.

The former Berwick assistant and Longwarry senior coach has been appointed as the midfield and senior assistant coach at the Blues for their first season in the AFL’s national women’s league - which kicks off in just a few months.

It’s been one hell of a ride recently for Gowans, and the whirlwind is only set to continue in the next 12 months.

“It’s still surreal, to be honest,” he said.

“Eight weeks ago I was sitting at Longwarry in the social rooms and talking with the boys about team selection, and now I’m at Carlton with Andrew McKay and Brendan Bolton.

It’s the same processes, but on a different level.”

Gowans left his role at Longwarry mid-season with the full blessing of the Crows in order to pursue his AFL women’s coaching dream.

He was in the running for roles at the Western Bulldogs and Collingwood as well as Carlton, but he is super confident that the Blues are the best placed moving forward.

“The Carlton opportunity is amazing,” he said, having spent his first day at Blues headquarters just a couple of weeks ago.

“The first thing they said to me is that they’re not kidding around with this,” he said.

“If you’re in this space and you’re wearing a Carlton uniform, we’re all in this together.”

Gowans, who was also the Dandenong Stingrays’ Youth Girls Academy coach and Vic Country Youth Girls coach in 2016, will be working under senior women’s coach Damien Keeping at the Blues.

The Carlton role also includes the position as coach of the Diamond Valley side in the VWFL.

It really is a dream come true for Gowans, who one day wants to be in the position to mentor other coaches.

“We’ve interviewed players and (Carlton list manager) Stephen Silvagni came in and did a talk and he introduced what they do with the recruiting in the men’s space, and that will be followed into the girls’ space,” Gowans said, having already well and truly got his teeth stuck into scouting for the Blues’ women’s side.

“The players have the same key attributes, and the same questions are asked of them.

“It’s a learning environment, and everyone is there to learn.”

And what a learning curve it is for Gowans.

It’s rivals o’clock

By David Nagel TRADITIONAL rivals Berwick and Narre Warren will launch a six-game extravaganza of finals football on Saturday when they collide headfirst in the qualifying final at Edwin Flack Reserve.

Season two of the South East Football Netball League has been almost a re-run of the first, with Cranbourne, the minor premiers, chased hard by the Wickers and Magpies, with Doveton and Beaconsfield set for a re-match of last year’s elimination final at Holm Park Reserve on Sunday.

Berwick coach Rhys Nisbet would be delighted with a re-run of last year’s finals series as well, with the Wickers winning their first premiership in 16 years. Nisbet said his side is ready to defend but is taking absolutely nothing for granted.

“We’re pretty comfortable with our preparation but we understand perfectly that things are about to step up a cog or two,” Nisbet said.

“Narre Warren is full of confidence right now, they’ve been belting teams of late, and we need to make sure we’re switched on from the start. We had a good preparation against Doveton last week and it was probably the perfect dressrehearsal for what’s coming at us on the weekend.”

The Magpies suffocated the Wickers on the way to a six-point victory at Kalora Park in Round 14. Chris Johnson did a fantastic job on running half back Luke Sheppard, while Josh Tonna and Trent Cody dominated the midfield equation.

But the Wickers were missing some key players that

day who are going to have a huge say in the final outcome.

There was no Madi Andrews, no Michael Riseley, and no Mark Weekes, Riley Heddles or Tom Brennan.

Throw in the home-ground advantage and it’s the Wickers to get the choccies by 21 points.

Nisbet’s great mate Clint Evans will lead Beaconsfield into battle for possibly the last time when his Eagles take on Doveton in Sunday’s cutthroat eliminator.

The 2014 premiership coach will step down at the end of the season, but wants to continue a winning streak against the Doves before his time comes to an end. The Eagles take a seven-game winning streak into just the second final between the clubs in 25 years.

“I feel like we match up pretty well with Doveton, but at the end of the day it all comes down to applying pressure for us,” Evans said.

“They’ve got some quality players who will use the ball well if we allow them to. Our pressure has been okay until last week and we need to make sure we’re concentrating for the four quarters.”

The battle in the ruck will be a beauty, with champions Meyer and Russ Gabriel set to resume a battle based purely on respect. We know what we’ll get from them both.

Meyer will be magnificently athletic and play as an extra midfielder around the ground, while Gabriel will dominate the stoppages, giving his midfielders first use of the ball.

The Doves will break the drought in an extra-time thriller.

Eagles to face the Redbacks in wash-up

By David Nagel CRANBOURNE out, Tooradin in - that’s the wash up of an exciting final round of the South East Football Netball League on Saturday.

Tooradin received four premiership points for the weekend’s bye, leaving Cranbourne with the enormous task of defeating third-placed Hampton Park to hold on to fifth position and earn a crack at this year’s flag. But the Eagles were taught a harsh lesson by the Redbacks in a one-sided 60-30 contest at Casey Fields.

Things were retrievable for Donna Wilson and her side at quarter time before the Redbacks lifted their intensity in the second quarter. With Brooke Kiely (GS) and Birgitta Nemaric (GA) on fire under the ring, the Redbacks pushed a fivegoal lead out to 14 by half time and maintained that advantage at the final break.

The Redbacks broke the Eagles’ spirit with a dominant 21-5 final term. Monalisa Groom (C) was sensational for the Redbacks while Tara Cecil (GK) and Sharni Lambden finished their seasons on a high for the Eagles.

In other games, Beaconsfield prevailed 59-49 in a highscoring encounter over ROC, Doveton scored a convincing 59-10 victory over Berwick, while Narre Warren will start favourites for this year’s title after a 56-34 triumph over Pakenham.

We now turn our attention to week one of the finals, with Beaconsfield (2nd) taking on Hampton Park (3rd) in Saturday’s qualifying final at Berwick, before Doveton (4th) and Tooradin (5th) fight for survival in Sunday’s elimination final at Holm Park Reserve.

Beaconsfield coach Simon O’Shanassy believes the key to success against the Redbacks will be for his side to concentrate on what it does best.

“I think at the start of the year we may be over-focussed on the opposition, where now we focus on our strengths and what makes us play our best netball,” O’Shanassy said.

“The girls are enjoying each other’s company and the focus is really on going out and having some fun.”

Kylie Kibble has built a strong squad at Hampton Park, with Karli Foster, Kim Coul-

son, Chloe Birch and Madi Hanlen joining Kiely, Nemaric and Groom in a powerful starting line-up. Players like Kaela Hughes, Andi Dickson and Courtney Davey will need to be at the top of their games if the Eagles are to progress to meet Narre Warren in next week’s second semi-final.

Doveton has a dominant record over Tooradin this season and will fancy its chances of continuing that trend in the elimination final on Sunday.

The Doves steamrolled the Seagulls 58-27 in Round 8 and then produced their highest score of the season in a 70-35 rout in Round 13.

The Doves have some absolute stars across the court, with Rahni Samason, Samantha Kappl and Shae Gee capable of anything under the ring, while Liz Edwards, Aggie Seeto and Cara Humbert can apply the brakes to the goalers of any opposition.

For Tooradin, Shona Wells, Emma Iacovou, Holy Gillespie and Tara Smith provide solidarity through the midcourt and they will need to stay strong to be a chance.

Beacy’s women kick goals

BEACONSFIELD’S first foray into the world of senior women’s football has been an overwhelming success despite Saturday’s 22-point loss to Mornington in the VWFL South East grand final at Shepley Oval.

Club president, and coach of the inaugural senior women’s football team, Troy Robinson, said the decision to introduce women’s football was a massive one for the club, but had been more than vindicated.

“It was a landmark decision for the club and we couldn’t be happier, both on and off the field, it has exceeded our expectations,” Robinson said.

“Off-field, it’s brought a lot more people to the club, the level of support has been amazing, and on field we couldn’t be prouder of the team. We have three female teams at the club (Under 13s, Under 18s and Senior Women) and they’ve all made grand finals this year, we’re absolutely stoked and think we’re on the right track.”

AFL South East will take over the running of VWFL South East competition next year, with clubs like Officer, Narre Warren and Pakenham showing interest in fielding teams in the fledgling AFL South East Senior Women’s League.

Robinson has a helpful message for those clubs.

“Be dedicated to it, have respect, train the girls like footballers but understand there will be a greater variance in ability, and that’s the reality,” he said.

“Some are new to the game and for them it’s about having a bit of fun and learning along the way.”

The Casey Scorpions have been the Cinderella story of the VFL this year - the rags to riches phenomenon of the season. But, just like Cinderella, the magic wore off as the clock approached 12 against Geelong at Simonds Stadium on Sunday.

A goal to Cam Pederson, after some great tackling work from Colin Garland, gave the Scorpions a 33-point lead at the 25-minute mark of the second term. The 11am start was no hindrance to Justin Plapp’s boys, who were playing like princes.

But then, at the stroke of midday, the magic went missing!

The Scorps would score just one more goal for the match, with Geelong piling on nine to score a meritorious 11-point, 13.5(83) to 10.12(72), victory to keep its top four chances alive.

The Scorps will still finish top two, but will be the equivalent of the ugly step-sisters in September if they keep us this type of behaviour.

“We started well, with the right mindset, but went away from everything we’ve prided ourselves on over the last month

of footy,” said a disappointed coach Justin Plapp.

“We had a very strong team on paper, but talent is not everything and we refused to put in a genuine effort in the second half.

It’s not acceptable and we played like a team that well outside the top eight after half time.”

Plapp said football is a game of moments, and said his side compounded its errors in the second half.

“If you miss one tackle, or miss one target, that can be recoverable, but we missed three or four tackles in succession, we dropped marks, we missed multiple targets and the opposition scored off our inconsistencies,” he said.

“When you have that collective across the board, it means you’re setups go astray and it sends a ripple effect through the side. We had an honest conversation after the match and a lot of hands went up when I asked who wasn’t happy with the effort they put in. The players need to be accountable.”

The Scorps will really need to toughen up with their mental aptitude.

Finals won’t be handed out like their last four wins by an average winning margin of 76 points, with finals footy having the uncanny ability to consis-

tently find flaws in teams that aren’t working together.

Plapp said the response needs to be strong, and it needs to immediate.

“I’m clearly not happy, and disappointed, but we move on and now it’s all about how we respond to this performance against Box Hill this week,” he said.

It wasn’t all bad news for the Scorps with Matt Jones, Jack Grimes, Jack Trengove and Mitchell White all having 30-possession games, while Angus Scott (3 goals) and Liam Hulett (2 goals) both had their kicking boots on.

But those boots, well they need to morph back into glass slippers again for the Scorps.

Rays hit form at right time

It’s invisible, it’s intangible, but can mesh a football club together to the point where accepting defeat can be impossible to comprehend.

Welcome to the season of the Dandenong Stingrays, a team that won its seventh game by 15 points or less this season with a 14-point victory over Geelong at Simonds Stadium on Sunday.

This was a hugely important victory in many ways.

For the just the third time in the 25-year history of the club, the Stingrays have finished at the top of the TAC Cup ladder, joining the minor premiership teams of 1997 and 2010.

Ironically, it was current-day coach Craig Black that was co-captain of the 1997 outfit that fell agonisingly short on grand final day. Black believes this current crop of stars is building the necessary belief to go all the way.

“They don’t like getting beaten, and that’s a very good trait to have in the TAC Cup because all the players have talent, it’s the little things that make the difference,” Black said.

but if you start winning a few by under a kick it can build massive belief within a group. Hopefully this group can go one step further than we did in 1997.”

Coaches have all used the line that “it might take until the last minute to crack these blokes” and that’s exactly what happened on the weekend.

Geelong looked to have the initiative, 10 points ahead with eight minutes left on the clock, but the Rays refused to lie down.

A Danny Allsop major cut the margin to just four points before Myles Poholke kicked truly to give the Rays the lead. Geelong hit back, but late goals to Doveton debutant Jarrod Smith, Reece Piper, and another on the siren to Tom Murphy will give the Stingrays a massive confidence boost going forward.

The Rays have now defeated fifth-placed Sandringham, fourth-placed Murray and secondplaced Geelong in three of their last four matches.

“Obviously we’re happy with our season and where we finished, but the best thing is we’ve earned that position by beating good opposition in finals like matches,” Black said.

Black praised the efforts of Smith, who finished the day as the leading goal-scorer on the ground with three, while Mason De Wit provided important versatility in defence and attack.

Poholke and Murphy finished with two, while Piper’s pace through the middle troubled the Falcons’ onballers.

The Stingrays will enjoy the top-eight bye this week before taking on Murray Bushrangers in a qualifying final the following weekend.

It’s one mean Mercedes

By Ewan Kennedy AUSTRALIANS make no bones about the fact that they love to drive, and if their budgets are up to it many will go for the high-performance models in any range.

We are the biggest buyers of Mercedes-AMG models in the world when taken as a percentage of all MercedesBenz sales.

We have just spent a very enjoyable week in a Mercedes-AMG C 63 S sedan, just the thing for a family man or woman in a hurry.

There’s no visual doubt this is the ultra-sports version of the Mercedes CClass model range.

A major redesign of the front of the sedan sees a 60 mm longer aluminium bonnet with twin power domes.

The frontal section has large air inlets and aerodynamic flics. There’s also a low splitter to reduce front-axle lift at speed.

The C 63 AMG coupe has a wider track, by 64 millimetres at the front and 66 at the rear. Larger wheel arches are filled by wider tyres (255 millimetre front, 285 rear).

Mercedes-AMG C 63 S has Nappa leather upholstery, heated front seats, digital TV and a panoramic glass sliding sunroof. The latter had seriously dark glass that worked brilliant against the silver paint of our test car.

The central tablet-type infotainment screen is large and easy to use.

It gives access to the Mercedes Comand system and the quality of sound from the audio system is impressive.

DAB+ radio, as is sometimes the way, can be a bit hit and miss but when you do get a full signal it’s well worth listening to your favourite channels.

Gone are the naturally aspirated 6.2-litre V8 engines of previous AMG cars we have known and loved, replaced by a 4.0-litre V8 bi-turbo unit producing 375 kW of power and a wild 700 Nm of torque. It drives through a semi-race seven-speed dual-clutch GTronic Plus gearbox.

Active safety features on a car like this mean it will do everything it can to save you from your own mistakes. Passive safety items include a full suite of items including nine airbags.

To really get the best from an AMG, even if you've no plans to go onto a track, we suggest taking part in on of the “Mercedes-Benz Driving Events” programs.

Intelligently, there are even courses for young drivers, including those still on P-plates.

We can all remember our younger days when we felt we knew everything about everything, if you want to help your teenagers to stay out of trouble on the road these courses are an excellent investment.

Low and mean, the Mercedes-AMG C 63 S sedan is just the thing for the family driver in a hurry.

The front sports seats support very well without being overly aggressive in their bolsters to the extent getting in and out is difficult. The rear seats are neatly trimmed in the same sporting manner as the front units.

Rear headroom may prove marginal for tall passengers due to the sunroof.

Legroom in the back isn’t too bad, but some compromising will be necessary at times.

Those in the back may not like the hard surfaces behind the two front seats if it rubs against their knees.

The engine shrieks under full-throttle acceleration, spits on fast downchange and burbles in a satisfying way even when driving at low speeds in normal day-to-day driving.

The brakes haul off speed hard and during our road driving we never came even remotely close to their limits.

However, our previous track testing

at Eastern Creek put the brakes under some strain. If you do intend to drive in controlled high-speed areas it might we worth specifying the optional composite brakes.

Comfort is compromised at times, even when using the softer settings on offer. Rough roads can knock the C 63 S a bit off course at times, though it recovers quickly. Some coarse-chip surfaces set up a lot or road road. This is a sports machine and the compromises will lean in the right direction for most owners.

The new generation MercedesAMG C 63 S sedan is a superb sports machine that looks stunning, sounds great and is a real driver’s car.

Combine that with the ability to cart the family around by way of four doors and a reasonable back seat and it’s well worth adding to your short list of performance street sedans.
