A men’s shed which is it is hoped will enrich and possibly save seniors’ lives in Endeavour Hills is just one step from reality. With the support of Casey council, the Rotary Club of Endeavour Hills is set to step in and found the sorely needed shed at the council-owned Essex Grove Community Place, pending a vote by the club’s members on 25 August. Councillor Rafal Kaplon said the shed, one of more than 300 in Victoria, would fill a vital void for the area’s growing legion of ageing, isolated males. The shed would provide a social outlet, branching off into activities and common interest groups and be a means of providing medical information and check-ups for reluctant men. It would be open to men and women aged 18 and over. Cr Kaplon said there was an opportunity for older members to mentor disengaged Doveton youth at the hub. “The thought is to have blokes go out and socialise and have a positive effect on younger blokes, teach them a few skills and get them engaged in the community.” He said that he was relieved that an exhaustive 18-month search for a founding committee and suitable venue appeared to be over. The proposed arrangement is for the Rotary Club to initially run and equip the shed, hired from Casey at a peppercorn rate, before handing the reins to shed members. Rotary members met with Casey staff and councillors as well as men’s shed representatives in a positive meeting on 18 August, Cr Kaplon said. Fellow ward councillor Rosalie Crestani said the shed would address mental health issues for senior men and that it would “save lives” of otherwise lonely elders. Endeavour Hills Rotary president nominee Jean Harrison said the club was attracted to the project because it wanted to increase its impact on the community. Among its local projects are helping community-aid group the Andrews Centre and planting a community vegetable garden with the Andrews Centre and Gleneagles Secondary College. Ms Harrison said the type of activities at the shed would be dictated by its members.
