That is the hard-earned advice from Selba Gondoza Luka, the ‘second mother’ who is transforming misguided African youth in Casey and Greater Dandenong.

She is one of the silent ’crime-fighters’ working behind the scenes against a much-publicised rise in serious youth offences, such as carjackings, car thefts and aggravated burglaries.

Ms Luka, who fronts the volunteer Afri-Aus Care group, often get referrals from the courts, Youth Justice, Community Corrections and Parkville Youth Detention Centre to help.

“When working with young people, I don’t judge them at all,” Ms Luka says. “I just tell them to think of their families, the community and their future.”

In many cases, young people go astray due to friction with parents at home.

“What works better is a more twoway conversation,” Ms Luka says.

She learnt this lesson herself, having faced similar issues with her daughter.

As Ms Luka reacted sternly, her relationship with her daughter became more rocky. She found she was “driving away” her daughter from the house and into more trouble.

Advice from a friend turned around the situation. She was told to talk to her daughter as a friend, not as her parent.

Ms Luka and her daughter started communicating again. Ms Luka made her daughter her first priority - she’d drop everything to listen, not judge and be there for her.

Her daughter is now embarking on a successful fashion design career.

“I was talked about in my community and it was a lot of pain,” Ms Luka recalls.

“Each time I see a young person in

To parents, Ms Luka can say she knows what they’re going through.

To the offenders, she tells them she will never give up on them.

“Even if you have done the wrong thing, there are better things you can do. Come up with something constructive.”

Her methods have borne fruit for a number of former offenders, some of whom have transformed into mentors.

At Ms Luka’s encouragement, the musician went willingly into rehab and has given up drugs and alcohol.

He is now studying business and leadership course at a TAFE in Dandenong. He wants to lead youngsters back on track by helping set up a AfriAus Care music studio for youngsters and urging them to get back to school.

himself, his wife and two children.

With Ms Luka’s help, he’s set up a Mow and More home-gardening enterprise. In gratitude, he has also offered a helping hand to straying youth.

Afri-Aus Care plans to launch music and organic gardening activities to engage young people. It also offers intensive case management, referrals to legal aid, mental health and drugand-alcohol services and employment support.

It is operating without government funding and requires sponsorship.

Ms Luka says her concern is the difficulty her proteges face in getting work. There are some she knows who have studied and yet can’t rise above factory work.

“You focus on what that kid wants to do. Once they’re confident, they find that next step in their education through alternative education pathways.

“Give them adequate supports to do something and make Australia a better place.”

Diplomacy ends siege

By Cam Lucadou-wells A FORMER Canberra-based diplomat has held police at bay during a house siege in Endeavour Hills and was at another time found naked in his car with three samurai swords, a court heard.

Prior to the siege on 30 July, Ashfaq Hussain, 34, had started stabbing his bedroom door and walls with a knife, declaring “he’d lost the plot” to a concerned housemate.

Later that evening, he wielded a butcher’s knife and told his three housemates he’d “kill all of you” as they tried to flee out the front door.

The housemates barricaded themselves in a room, and two of them later fled out a rear door.

At 7pm, a critical-incident-response police cordon was formed outside. They were concerned that an armed Hussain and one of his housemates remained in the house,

the court was told.

After a peaceful negotiation, Hussain was safely removed about 8.45pm.

At the time, Hussain was on bail for separate offences. He told police he was “insane” and lived a “delusional life”.

After a while, police thought Hussain became more coherent and so was putting on an act, the court was told.

On 18 December, Hussain was found naked in the driver’s seat of his car with samurai swords in his car’s open boot in Mont Albert.

He told police he couldn’t remember where or when he got the swords. He kept them “just to look at”.

His lawyer later told the court the swords were bought via Gumtree and that Hussain had a weapons licence in the ACT, though not Victoria.

The accused was also charged with threatening to harm an ex-girlfriend in March and with driving an unregistered car with a suspended ACT driver’s licence and without number plates in Noble Park in May. Defence lawyer Emma Strugnell said the accused arrived in Australia as a young adult, and retired as a diplomat in Canberra onto a disability pension when diagnosed with mental health issues in 2015.

He then moved to Melbourne where he had little family support, Ms Strugnell said.

“There has not been 100 per cent compliance with his medication.

“He tells me that’s essentially the reason behind these incidents.”

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said it was hard to distinguish between the impact of Hussain’s bipolar disorder and drug use, including ice, cannabis and alcohol.

“You yourself draw the link be-

tween your drug use, your mental health and your offending.

“If you comply with your corrections order and the medication and keep away from any drugs, the chances of you having any contact with the courts are very low.”

Mr Vandersteen noted “tens of thousands of dollars” of police resources were used to arrest the accused at the siege, which could have ended much more seriously.

“You have had a lot go against you in the last couple of years, but I appreciate you’re still an intelligent person.”

Mr Vandersteen urged Hussain to comply with a community treatment order and a new 12-month treatment-based, supervisory community corrections order.

He said Hussain’s 16-day stint in remand custody was time served.

The seized weapons were forfeited.

From substance use to man of substance Afri-Aus Care is helping transform African youth into mentors for other young people. One example is Chaileng Jok, who spoke to CAM LUCADOU-WELLS. CHAILENG Jok sees his future clearly now.

The budding rapper’s direction has come out the other side after being once hazed by substance abuse, getting into trouble with the law and without plans for study or work.

That changed with an intervention from his “second mother” and Afri-Aus Care founder Selba Gondoza Luka.

It was the help he needed at the time, the gently-spoken Mr Jok said.

His saviour ’Selba’ says it stopped him going on a path to prison. She told him at the time to look at the future.

“I thought if I carry on like this I won’t have a future,” Mr Jok says. “I have to change my life.”

He reckons a lot of young African boys that are currently caught in drugs and stealing face greater challenges than himself, especially those who are homeless or have no parents.

His plan is to show them an “example” from his own life of how things can turn around.

Medal for brave bloke

By Victoria Stone-meadows CRANBOURNE resident Corey Zarth has been awarded an honour for bravery after rescuing a baby from a burning car in Queensland.

Mr Zarth has been awarded a medal for bravery by the Governor- General of Australia General Sir Peter Cosgrove on Wednesday 17 August for his quick thinking and selfless actions.

On 14 November 2013, Mr Zarth was driving his truck on Cunningham Highway near Aratula, inland from the Gold Coast, when another truck in front of him crashed into a sedan.

The car was pushed almost 100 metres along the road, causing the car to burst into flames.

Upon approaching the car, Mr Zarth and another man realised the female driver of the car was unconscious while a nine-month-old baby was fastened in the back seat.

The truck’s fuel tank had ruptured, spilling diesel over the roadway, and the car and the truck engines were both ablaze.

Mr Zarth and the other man removed the baby from the booster seat in the back of the car and the former put out the flames with a fire extinguisher.

The baby was taken a safe distance from the wreckage until the arrival of emergency services, but the female driver could not be removed from the vehicle due to the heat of the fire.

Sadly, the female driver Sharee Harvey, 21, did not survive the accident, but her infant daughter was released from hospital two days later, thanks to the acts of Mr Zarth and the other Good Samaritan.

Mr Zarth is one of 25 people who have been awarded a bravery medal from the GovernorGeneral in 2016 and will receive his medal at a future ceremony.

High-tech detection CASEY Highway Patrol apprehended two drug traffickers with the help of the new BlueNet detection vehicles.

The Highway Patrol officers were on duty on High Street, Cranbourne, about 11pm on Monday 8 August when the high-tech car picked up a vehicle with a suspended registration.

The officers intercepted the white Mercedes van and found a large quantity of cannabis plants, both mature and seedlings, in the van.

The two occupants of the van, a 22-year-old male and a 40-year-old male, were charged with cultivating, trafficking and possession of a controlled substance.

Both men were remanded to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court.

Mr Jok worked towards getting a driver’s licence, and received intensive CALD drug and alcohol support.

He detoxed for seven days and is now abstinent from drugs and alcohol.

Mr Jok is one of the leaders of

Sick of his factory job, he is enrolled in a leadership and management diploma, with a view to starting a business degree.

As part of his transformation, he fervently reads self-devlopment books.

THEIVES in Clyde North didn’t get very far in a stolen vehicle as the car was found just a short distance from the victim’s premises.

About 11pm on Wednesday 10 August, two offenders entered a property on Selandra Rise and stole car keys from the house.

The thieves then used the keys to steal a 2002 White Chrysler Voyager from the property, but crashed the car shortly afterwards.

Police attended the scene of the crash, but the offenders had fled.

It recommends ignoring curries, soups or pasta dishes on the menu.

Instead, take a serve of plain meat or fish with either rice, rice noodles, baked potatoes, salads and steamed vegetables.

At a pizza restaurant, hit the gluten-free bases.

Alternatively try a Korean barbecue or a Japanese restaurant, the guide suggests.

Cutting out most of the planet’s most spicy and unique offerings goes straight against the Dine Local philosophy.

But oddly, bland food has never tasted better. Perhaps because the correspondent is suffering half-starvation when he faces his simplified meals.

Or perhaps it’s a simple feeling of thanks from a sensitive gut that has endured a lifetime of ‘whatever goes’.

One important note: if you’re afflicted by irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), colitis or any other chronic gut disruption, consult a dietician first before trialling the low-FODMAP diet.

EVER heard of FODMAP? Well, nor had the Dine Local correspondent until he plunged into a low fermentable oligosaccharides, di-saccharides, mono-saccharides and polyols diet two weeks ago.

Since trialling low-FODMAP, his roaring, irritable gut has been tamed but dining out has turned into a veritable minefield.

After all, when you cut out fructose-rich fruits, lactose, wheat, rye, garlic, onions, certain sweet vegies and gaseous legumes like baked beans, what the hell is there left to eat?

The other swirling questions were: how long will it take to get sick of quinoa and rice? How long can one endure rice-flake porridge for breakfast? What tastes good without onions or garlic?

Or, as the correspondent’s son put it: “What’s that mush?”

“It is what it is, son,” came the reply.

One still wasn’t sure while eating at a famed health-conscious restaurant with loads of vegan and gluten-free options that it was FODMAP friendly.

Rather than blindly gorging on the exotic culinary delights of Melbourne’s south east, Dine Local sought some expert advice.

Monash University’s Department of Gastroenterology is researching the low-FODMAP diet and has published a guide and app listing friendly and unfriendly foods.

It has particularly uninspiring advice on dining out for those with an adventurous palate.

Rail and road

By Cam Lucadou-wells CASEY council has identified a duplication of one road and an extension of Cranbourne railway line as the municipality’s major transport infrastructure priorities.

The council has hired The Civic Group to develop its advocacy campaign which nominates one road and one public transport outcome as the prime focus, a report to the council’s 16 August meeting stated.

From a long list of projects, the number one priorities are the duplication of Narre WarrenCranbourne Road between Thompsons Road and South Gippsland Highway, and adding train stops at Cranbourne East and Clyde.

The road project has already been allocated $10 million of state planning funding.

Other priorities included a duplication of Hallam South Road between Princes Highway and Pound Road, which has been allocated $10 million of state planning funding.

Added to the list is Glasscocks Road between South Gippsland and Western Port highways. It is dependent on a grade-separation of a railway line crossing.

The Cranbourne Bypass proposal was dropped

due to it being first reliant on the construction of the Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road duplication.

Casey will lobby for an extension of Cranbourne railway line to Cranbourne East and Clyde stations.

The report states that there was likely to be extra bus services in Cranbourne by November, and significant upgrades of Monash Freeway and Thompsons Road in the pipeline.

The federal pledge for a Monash Freeway upgrade and O’Shea Road extension had, however, not been matched by the State Government, the report noted.

At the meeting, councillors also pledged to continue lobbying for safety improvements at the Lynbrook Boulevard-South Gippsland Highway intersection.

So far, VicRoads recently installed brighter LED traffic lights at the intersection, installed larger ‘Road Safety Camera Ahead’ signs and was developing an idea to improve traffic flow on the highway.

Councillor Damien Rosario said the intersection’s speed camera had raised $955,000 in the past financial year.

He was sceptical on whether the high-offence rate was strictly a “behavioural” issue.

Police hope to close this case IT’S the case - of the stolen case - that’s been found, but needs a home.

Police have held a silver case for more than a year and are still waiting for someone to pick it up.

The case was located by police in July 2015 among other stolen property.

Police said that the distinctive silver case contained a “treasured collection that would be missed by its owner”.

Police have said the case will be returned to its correct owner once certain questions can be answered regarding the case’s contents.

Anyone with information on the case is urged to call the Narre Warren Police Station on 9705 3111.

CONSTRUCTION UPDATE

It’s been a case of building up Bunjil Place over the last month as the construction site continues to add height.

Formwork for level one of the Library is being prepared and the grand staircase, which will be a practical and impressive design feature, is taking shape.

LYNNE Hume contacted the News in the hope that readers can help her reconnect with her old friend Loris Robinson.

Loris is godmother to Lynne’s daughter.

“We lost contact about 25 or 30 years ago and my search has just come to a dead end,” wrote Lynne.

“Her last known address was 16 Endeavour Drive, Cranbourne, but she is not living there now. Seems she sold up about eight or nine years ago.

“When I last had contact she was married to Colin Robinson and had a daughter Sarah.”

THERE could be frequent cases of mistaken identity between two Hallam companies - one is an electrical supply and construction company Powerplant and the other is a horticultural lighting firm Powerplants.

To add to the confusion, the two companies apparently sometimes collaborate on lighting projects.

AN ACCUSED’S faith in his lawyers was unshaken despite being forced to stay a further month in Dandenong police cells due to the lawyers being apparently unable to visit him.

In a letter to Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 15 August, the lawyers requested an adjournment until 8 September.

The judge asked the accused if he wanted to see Victoria Legal Aid lawyers instead. “It’s not good enough that you’re remanded in custody and no one speaks to you.

“If they’re representing you, they should drive out here and see you in the cells.”

The man, facing a six-week total stint in the cells, said he’d prefer to stick with the lawyers who had previously represented him.

REPORTER Cameron Lucadou-Wells received recognition from the TAC Towards Zero Media Awards this week.

He received a Highly Commended runnersup award in the metropolitan section for his story on the death of two teenagers in a car crash in Kallista in May. Judges said the story Brothers in Grief was a “compelling” account, which included Mr Lucadou-Wells’ insight into losing his own brother in a car crash 20 years ago.

Clyde won’t just cop it TWO members of the State Opposition - with the backing of a growing group of Casey residents - have called for a police station in Clyde.

The campaign on Facebook has 70 followers and about eight locals turned out on Thursday 11 August, to meet with Bass MP Brian Paynter and Eastern Victorian Region MP and Shadow Minister for Police Edward O’Donohue.

Campaigners Pat and Max Janssen have bought land in the Delaray estate, in Clyde, and were vocal at the meet.

Ms Janssen said: “When you think of the area between Berwick and Cranbourne and the up-and-coming estates there’s very limited resources around�.

The Janssen’s moved to Casey from Vermont South 12 months ago and weren’t pleased to hear of the increase in crime. “We will continue to campaign for a police station in Clyde for as long as it takes,� she said. “The government needs to start looking for land before it all disappears. “I am concerned as more people move into the area, the roads become more congested and crime rises - it is a concern

if we are going to be waiting 10 years for a police station to service Clyde.�

Mr Paynter and Mr O’Donohue addressed the group about the crime scourge at the Clyde Recreation Reserve. “What we’ve had today was long-standing residents, new residents and a couple who are looking to come into the area and it’s critical for them to move into an area that they feel safe in,� Mr Paynter said. “We feel the government is dropping the ball, crime has risen and crime in Clyde in particular has risen over 50 per cent which is a major concern. “So what we’re asking for is that the government get on the front foot with this and firstly provide the police resources, but also the physical facilities and that is a station in Clyde.�

Mr O’Donohue said with crime up nearly 20 per cent in the City of Casey, in particular Endeavour Hills, a station in the highly populated south-east region is important. “The simple fact is that there are fewer police in Casey at the police stations than there were in November 2014 despite the rise in crime and rise in population,� Mr O’Donohue said. “I’ve been receiving contact

for well over 12 months from people who are worried about the crime wave and police presence. “And as we see congestion increase on Casey’s roads the distance from a police station to the location in time can increase, so it’s important to have an additional police station in the southern part of Casey.�

The Opposition’s campaign for a police station in Clyde comes as the State Government deploys 37 new graduates across the state.

The graduating police - 21 men and 16 women - have completed Victoria Police’s rigorous 33-week training program at the Glen Waverley Academy.

The next bout of trainees to join the academy over the next 12 months, include around 1000 new police, Protective Services Officers and Police Custody Officers.

A part of the State Government’s $596 million Public Safety Package, 300 frontline police are set to be deployed across Victoria.

The State Government reports that the roll-out of custody officers has been fasttracked by six months, with 400 officers to be deployed by the end of 2017.

Mr Burniston is also a mentor for the youth program Man Cave that offers positive male role models to young men in the Casey region.

Casey council presented awards to many volunteers at a ceremony in January this year and Mr Burniston said he was honoured to win young volunteer of the year.

“It was unbelievable, I always had that little bit of me saying I was going to win it, but overall I was humble about the whole thing,” he said.

“I know a few of the other nominees and I thought I’m not going to win this so when they announced me as the winner I was gobsmacked.”

Mr Burniston said the award is great and he would continue to volunteer even if he didn’t win.

“It’s the normal stuff I do,” he said.

“I just wanted to hang out with likeminded people and I just kept that ball rolling and kept doing really great stuff.

“It does feel fantastic to have my work recognised.”

THE 2016 Casey Young Volunteer of the Year award was presented to an 18-year-old Narre Warren resident for his volunteer work through the Narre Warren Community Centre.

Jery Burniston was still 17 when he was presented with the award but has approached his volunteer work with the maturity of someone much older.

He has been involved in three volunteer groups and orchestrated many activities to improve the lives of young people in the Casey area.

A member of the Casey Youth Action Committee, Mr Burniston has overseen events like the Casey Colour Run. He has worked tirelessly with the Action Committee to bring young people in the area together and improve their lives though activities that promote leadership and skill building.

Mr Burniston has also worked with the Casey and Dandenong branches of Unite Alliance that aims to improve the lives of LGBTIQ youth.

“My main job was to promote (Unite Alliance) more and try to make people see it in a different light, rather than just being gay,” he said.

“It is all about opening hetro people’s experiences of LGBTIQ communities to gain valu-

Family still struggling on

By Victoria Stone-Meadows BROOKE Skewes lost her best friend in a horror car smash in Lynbrook seven years ago and has maintained close ties to the family ever since.

It is though those close ties to the family that Ms Skewes has decided to raise funds to help the family with its ongoing struggle.

Ms Skewes was very close to 16-year-old Riyani Lowen who tragically lost her life at the intersection of Hallam and Ormond roads at 1.30am on 28 June 2009.

Since then Ms Skewes has done everything she can to support Riyani’s mother Emma and younger sister Casey who was born with cerebral palsy.

Since the accident Emma Lowen has developed PTSD from the shock loss of her eldest daughter and the strain of caring for her youngest.

Ms Skewes cares deeply for the Lowen family and has organised a fundraising day to help Emma Lowen get the treatment she needs and offer more support for Casey.

“I met them when I was 10 and I’m 22 now,” Ms Skewes said.

“I was friends with Riyani when we lost her in the car accident in 2009 but I have maintained a relationship with the family.”

Ms Skewes said she has seen firsthand the toll Riyani’s death has taken on her mother.

“I think that, at the start, when it was fresh, a massive influx of attention and support was put on the family but as time has gone by that has died off,” she said.

“For Emma the longer time passes, the worse it has been for her.”

Ms Skewes has organised a family fun day in Hampton Park that is

“I wanted to put the day on as I have a Gofundme account and I thought putting on an event to raise money and raise awareness of the Gofundme site would really help,” she said.

Emma Lowen is seeing a counsellor once a week for her PTSD that costs about $220 a week as well as medication which costs the family $250 a week.

“It’s just too much for a single income family with a disabled child,” Ms Skewes said.

“It puts a strain on Emma because she feels guilty when her family is

Special hair care for cancer patients ST JOHN of God Berwick Hospital is proudly running its Community Wig Service within the Specialist Centre at Kangan Drive, Berwick.

The service, launched in April 2016, is free of charge and available to anybody in the community who is suffering from cancer related hair loss.

Currently, there is a wide selection of wigs available for loan in a variety of styles, lengths and colours. Patients are required to make an appointment by calling 8793 0550.

During their visit, they will be greeted by one of the hospital’s fully trained volunteers who will assist in the selection and fitting of a suitable wig.

The volunteers will also provide information about styling and wig care.

The service has been funded through the very generous donations of many within the

community, from individuals to larger fundraising groups.

These funds have been used to set up the facility and will be used to purchase more wigs as demand requires, professionally sanitize the wigs after they are returned, maintain the Wig Room and consistently train new volunteers.

“The Community Wig Service has been developed to service the community.

“Along with our Day Oncology Centre, which opened in March 2015, we are developing services which complement the expanding hospital and it’s increasing suite of specialties, to open next door at Kangan Drive in 2017.

“We have spent a lot of time planning what we can offer to this community, which is rapidly growing, to ensure we meet their needs not only today but also in the future,” explains Lisa

Evans, Director of Nursing.

“The Community Wig Service also gives us an opportunity to add another dimension to our Day Oncology for our patients but also to reach out and assist all cancer patients in the region.”

ACTIVE DOWNSIZERS CHANGING THE FACE OF HOUSING AN emerging band of baby boomers is forcing home designers and developers to re-think how they deliver new housing.

Active downsizers, people aged over 50, who want to cash in on equity from their large suburban home are increasingly seeking affordable, low maintenance homes in secure environments.

Developer Lifestyle Communities says active downsizers are often ignored by builders and developers.

And as the number of retiring baby boomers rises, the lack of appropriate housing stock will be a major concern, according to Lifestyle Communities managing director James Kelly.

“It may not be super exciting, but storage is often at the top of our buyers’ wish list,” Mr Kelly said.

Ghulamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Mission possible GHULAM Abbas was 19 and alone when he arrived in Australia from Afghanistan as a desperate refugee.

Now, just 10 months later, Ghulam is making a new life for himself, thanks to a lot of hard work, determination and some support from Mission Australiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Transition to Work program.

Safely in Australia, Ghulam was determined to complete his secondary schooling and pursue his dream of becoming an apprentice electrician.

He enrolled in English classes, but found the going tough because of the diverse English skill levels of his classmates.

Adding to his frustration was the fact that every school Ghulam applied for had rejected his application, with most not offering an explanation.

Stranded in a new country and with no family support, Ghulamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s dream seemed impossible.

However, his hopes were revived when a teacher recommended Mission Australiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Transition to Work program, based in Dandenong.

Mission Australiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Claire Cook said the Transition to Work program was designed for people between the ages of 15 to 21 struggling to connect with education or employment, and assists them by providing pathways to educational services

and employers. Ghulamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pathway has led him to Hampton Park Secondary College, where he is studying for his VCE. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t believe how quickly my luck changed after

getting in touch with the Transition to Work program. I knew that I wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t fulfilling my full potential when I was studying at my English classes. All I really wanted was to be in a classroom with people my own age

and make friends that can help me out when I need it," Ghulam said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Transition to Work program helped me organise various meetings and did every-

thing in their power to get me accepted into a high school. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t believe it when the news came through that I was going back to school, it was a dream come true and I am tru-

ly grateful for the opportunity. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I was lucky enough to join the other VCE students in the middle of the semester, which means that I have a lot of work to catch up on. I usually finish school around 3.30pm, so I make sure that I get to the library by 4.30pm to see my tutor for catch-up sessions.â&#x20AC;?

Ms Cook said the Mission Australia staff ensured that Ghulam knew he had other options such as VCAL at Tafe, but he insisted he wanted to be in a high school. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Ghulam has had a tough journey getting to where he is now, so itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s great to see him so motivated and focused, and finally reaping the rewards of his hard work. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Ghulamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s story is certainly an amazing one, and he was over the moon when he received the news about his acceptance to Hampton Park Secondary College. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s definitely the best part of my job when we see an outcome like Ghulamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just the best.â&#x20AC;?

By Victoria Stone-meadows BOOK Week has officially launched at Tooradin primary school where the students dressed up as their favourite characters for a book parade.

Monday 15 August saw all manner of characters march through the halls of the school as students celebrated their favourite book characters.

Students dressed up as Harry Potter, Amelia Jane, a very large dragon, Wally, a Hobbit, Gandalf, Alice in Wonderland, Mr Men, unicorns and many more.

Book week at the school will see students participate in activities such as mystery stories, Grandparents day and of course, reading many great books.

Tooradin Primary School wellbeing co-ordinator Rachel Davis said book week was about creating excitement around books and reading.

“The whole week is really about celebrating the excitement of reading and the imagination of books,” she said.

“We are really immersing them in any way we can in the joy and thrill of bring part of other people’s stories and also allowing them to create their own stories and illustrations as well.”

As education moves more towards computer learning, Ms Davis said books are just as exciting to students as they always were.

“In a technological age, there is the opportunity for books to fall by the wayside but we are finding no matter what else comes along nothing replaces a book in your hands.”

VOICES of Casey and the School of Hard Knocks present Street Requiem at Cranbourne Community Theatre on Saturday 20 August.

Street Requiem, conceived by the creator of the School of Hard Knocks, Dr Jonathon Welch, and composed in collaboration with Dr Kathleen McGuire and Andy Payne, aims to bring a sense of peace, remembrance and hope to many communities struggling to come to terms with street violence.

Street Requiem will be conducted by Dr Jonathon Welch, and will feature local artists, soprano Christine Butt and tenor Izaac Lea, as soloists. Voices of Casey, will be joined by other choirs within the School of Hard Knocks family including the Latrobe Valley Community Choir, THECHO!R and the Sing The World choir.

There will be performances by each choir as well as a performance by the massed choir which has over

100 singers. Afternoon tea will follow.

Voices of Casey is part of the School of Hard Knocks Absolutely Everybody choral program.

The choir is conducted on Monday nights by Mr Welch. Its members range from 18 through to 82 years of age.

Voices of Casey is an un-auditioned choir, brought together by a love of singing, fun, performing and sense of community.

Choir manager Paulien George said funds raised by this performance would go back into the local Casey community.

“The generous support of the City of Casey, School of Hard Knocks, local businesses and service groups have helped Voices of Casey make this event happen.“ Tickets for the 2pm concert can be booked through the School of Hard Knocks website, cost is $25 adults/$22 concession and U16.

What’s on Stitch up a course THE Narre Warren North Uniting Church is about to commence three new community programes: Stitch and Chat, a disadvantaged toddlers group and affordable cooking. Stitch and Chat is a weekly practical workshop for sewing crafts - knitting, embroidery, quilting, crochet - led by a guest facilitator. The disadvantaged toddlers support group is a self-help support group for parents whose severely disadvantaged children are unable to participate in mainstream pre-school activities. It is particularly aimed at children suffering conditions requiring 24 hour supervision.

This activity provides a 'day-time care’ and support network for participating parents and their children. The affordable healthy cooking class teaches participants to prepare healthy home cooked meals. Aimed at families and singles this series of weekly demonstrations will be supported by follow-up practical sessions for each recipe.

Cavs fight back

By Russell Bennett THERE were plenty of turnovers, fouls, and missed wide open shots but the Casey Cavaliers’ Division 1 men’s Big V basketball semi-final win over old foes Shepparton was nothing short of enthralling for the crowd that packed out the Casey Indoor Leisure Centre on Saturday night.

After losing their qualifying final by nine points to Warrnambool, the Cavs were on the brink of elimination on Saturday against the Gators before ultimately prevailing in overtime 7060.

Stewart Baird’s men trailed 21-11 at the end of the first as nothing they tried offensively seemed to work.

The Gators were without star guard Matt Bartlett and suited up just seven players for the contest but big man import Reggie Fuller (18 points, 13 boards and 3 blocks) posed all sorts of headaches for the Cavs - particularly on the defensive end of the floor.

The Gators looked the more fired up of the two sides and doubled the Cavs score - 26-13 - with 7:30 left on the clock in the second quarter.

But active hands from Casey guard Brad Szalek (17 points on 50 per cent shooting) and big man Dean Johnson started to lead to transition opportunities, and that in-turn sparked their side into life. It was a matter of defense by committee on the Gators’ low-post threats and it worked a charm as - with 3:50 left in the half - the Cavs levelled the score at 27 apiece after a three from Matt Witherden (14 points and 7 boards) and steal and lay-up from Ben

Louis (13 points, 7 boards, 6 steals, 6 assists).

Suddenly the game was played on the Cavs’ tempo as they forced the Gators into a series of one-and-done offensive possessions.

The scores were still deadlocked at the half - 32-32 - with both sides shooting under 40 per cent from the floor.

A real scoring drought ensued in the third but Johnson, Witherden, Louis and Brent Hobba (12 points, 14 boards, 2 steals) were rolling their sleeves up and getting to work. Still, a buzzer-beating three from the Gators had them ahead by that margin with seemingly a quarter left to play.

Louis’ defense all game on Fuller was nothing short of sensational, but the visitors’ biggest star still found a way to impact the contest in the fourth with a series of tough, contested jumpers. The Gators led by seven points with a shade over two minutes left in regulation but another Witherden three from the wing cut the deficit to just four with 1:30 left.

A couple of huge hustle plays one a steal and dunk from Louis - tied the scores at 57 apiece but the Cavs were unable to come up with a winning bucket in the final 30 seconds of the term. They had their chances, but couldn’t seem to grasp them.

Offensive execution continued to be an issue from both sides in overtime but again it was the Cavs who came up with the biggest defensive plays when they were needed most.

Szalek was huge on both ends of the floor in the second half and OT - including a decisive three with less than

a minute remaining - but overall the Cavs mastered one thing from the contest ... the art of winning ugly. Playoff basketball is rarely pretty, but an ugly win is still a win - right when it matters most.

“Brad (Szalek) got us back into it in the second quarter,” Baird said after the contest.

“He brought the energy to the defensive end that we just hadn’t seen the whole game prior to that. He was huge for us the whole game, and the boys just found a way to grind it out.

“I really thought with four minutes to go we were in big trouble.

“They were up six and we’d been in that situation before this season and hadn’t coped with it well, but our experience shone through. Ben Louis is just such a competitor who’ll never say die.

His defensive job on Fuller might not show on the stat sheet but the work he does is amazing.”

The curtain-raiser to the men’s game on Saturday night - featuring the Cavs’ Division 2 women - was a nailbiter in its own right.

The Cavs led Blackburn by seven points with just a quarter to play but the visitors started the last with an unanswered run to level the scores. Both sides continued to pound the ball down low as turnovers continued to mount but the home side did just enough to hold on in regulation 58-54.

By David Nagel A DREAM season was capped off by a dream weekend for the Casey Scorpions who stitched up a top-two finish in the VFL with a clinical 105-point drubbing of Werribee at Casey Fields on Sunday.

Only three teams inside the top eight secured victories on the weekend, allowing the Scorps and Collingwood to open up a one-game gap over Williamstown and a three-game advantage over the rest of the field.

Williamstown has an unrewarded bye in the final round in a fortnight’s time, meaning the Scorps have locked up a onetwo position with two weeks left to play.

The Scorps third 100-plus victory for the season didn’t look possible early, with the Tigers kicking the first two goals and testing the home side who were inaccurate in front of goal.

But the Scorps had gained the ascendency by quarter time, leading by 13 points before extending that to 36 at the main break.

Viv Michie and Alex NealBullen had 20 possessions each in the first half while Chris Dawes had two goals to his name.

The Scorps took total control of the contest in the third term as Werribee’s early pressure dropped away. The Scorps kicked 7.4 to 1.0 for the term,

By David Nagel DANDENONG Stingrays will launch its TAC Cup premiership assault from a top-two position after a thrilling one-point victory over Murray Bushrangers at Shepley Oval on Saturday.

A late goal to best on ground Hunter Clark secured a resilient victory for the Stingrays, who gained the ultimate revenge for a four-point loss to the Bushies in Round 7.

The grinding victory finds the Stingrays in second place, six points clear of the Bushrangers with just one round remaining. The Stingrays face top-of-the-table Geelong Falcons this Sunday in a finalround shoot-out for the minor premiership.

Coach Craig Black could not have been more proud of his side, which fended off a quality opponent kicking into a twoto-three goal breeze in the final quarter. The Stingrays led by just two points at the final break but kicked 3.1 to 3.2 to hold on for one of the most satisfying wins of the season.

“Plain and simple, it was our effort that determined the result in the end,” Black said.

“This is a really good group, a tight group, and we asked them for their best effort at three-quarter time and they didn’t let us down. As coaches we tell players that if they work hard they will get the results and a game like this really does hammer that home.”

The Stingrays certainly didn’t have this one all their own way, in fact the Bushrang-

ers held the momentum for most of the day.

They trailed by just two goals at quarter time and then wasted a dominant period of play in the second quarter, kicking 3.7 to 0.1 to a 12-point advantage to the major interval.

Black knew his side had dodged a bullet.

“We definitely did. We dropped the ball and really let ourselves down, they gained the ascendency and they were all over us in the second quarter.

What makes the win so pleasing is that we were able to learn from our mistakes and rectify those issues in the final quarter.”

Clark’s match-winner in the final term capped off a clear standout performance across wing and half back, while small forwards Sam Fowler and Danny Allsop - who alongside Clark kicked two - created plenty of headaches for the Bushrangers' defence.

Mason DeWit did a great job on Murray danger man Todd Marshall after half time, while Nathan Scagliarini, Tom Murphy and Beaconsfield’s Bailey Morrish were also valuable contributors to a hard-fought win.

“It was a tough game, there were some very heavy collisions and there’ll be a few sore bodies this week on both sides,” said Black, who now has the challenge of lifting his side for the ultimate home-and-away challenge against the Falcons this week at Simonds Stadium.

Seagulls are still in the hunt

By David Nagel TOORADIN’S season - one that looked destined for the scrap heap last week - has been rejuvenated after the Seagulls scored a thrilling 46-43 victory over Beaconsfield on Saturday.

A loss to the Eagles would have ended the season for coach Kelly Haynes and her side, but victory now sees them with a massive chance of playing finals.

The Seagulls - who sit sixth and have the bye - need third-placed Hampton Park to defeat fifth-placed Cranbourne this week and a finals berth is assured.

Haynes was thrilled with the effort to defeat a side that had only previously been defeated by the unbeaten Narre Warren this season.

“That’s an understatement,” said an excited Haynes, who last week agreed to a two-year extension to

her first year at the helm.

“It was like a final, it was loud, the footballers were cheering us on and the girls really responded.”

Dayle Willis (GS), 26 goals, and Alex Duff (GA), 20, shared the workload up front, while Haynes (GK) and Ebony Dolan (GD) did a great job in defence.

Beacy hit the front in the last term but looked unsettled from the start after last week’s game against Cranbourne that saw defender Dani Cameron suspended and coach Simon O’Shanassy reprimanded for poor behaviour.

Beaconsfield was beaten by a better team on Saturday in a game that indirectly hurt Cranbourne’s finals aspirations. Amanda McKenna (C) and Zoe Mason (WD) were strong through the midcourt for Beacy.

Despite the setback, Cranbourne will still fancy its chances of playing

finals after pushing Narre Warren in its 55-42 defeat at Kalora Park.

Donna Wilson’s girls scored 14-9 in the second quarter to draw level, before a quick start to the third term saw them open up a three-goal lead.

But the Magpies aren’t the reigning champs for nothing, lifting their rating towards the end of the third term to score a very impressive victory in the end.

Chloe Phillips (GS) exploded into action for the Magpies in the final term, while skipper Tara Cecil (GK) and excitement-machine Alanah Hardy (GA) were at their irresistible best for the vanquished.

Hampton Park will take on Beaconsfield in the qualifying final in a fortnight’s time after securing third place with a high-quality 54-50 victory over Doveton at Robert Booth Reserve.

The Redbacks took the early initiative - and it proved crucial - in a

game that levelled into an even contest after quarter time.

There were some great battles all over the court, with Kim Coulson (GK) and Rania Waller (GD) taking on Doveton shooters Rahni Samason (GS) and Shae Gee (GA), while Monalisa Groom (C) and Aila Pera (C) had a great duel in the midcourt.

And finally, ROC secured its fourth win for the season with a nail-biting 38-37 triumph over Berwick at Edwin Flack Reserve.

ROC kicked out to an eight-goal lead at half time before Emily LaRoche (C), Sarah McDermott (WA) and Mikaela Greer (GA) inspired a gutsy comeback from the hosts. It came down to the great ball-handling skills of Ash Barnett (C) and goalers Lauren Hargreaves (GS) and Sam Neil (GA) to get the job done in a tight one.

Pakenham had the bye.

Percentage play

By David Nagel TOP spot goes up for grabs in the final round of the South East Football Netball League this week with Berwick and Cranbourne locked in a percentage battle for the minor premiership.

Last year’s grand finalists both sit with13-2 records, the Wickers 6.82 percent clear but with a tougher round 18 assignment.

The Wickers make the testing trip to fourth-placed Doveton while Cranbourne has a percentageboosting prospect on its hands with a home game against cellar-dwellers Hampton Park.

Doveton coach Steve O’Brien believes his team can spoil the Wickers’ party and take some real momentum into this year’s finals series.

“Heading into finals, winning form is good form and we’re preparing with the intention of winning

this game of footy,” O’Brien said.

“We’ll throw everything at it because if we can beat two serious finals contenders in our last three games it’s going to give us some powerful momentum heading in.

It might even get a few of the top teams looking over their shoulders.”

The Doves defeated Narre Warren in Round 15, the Magpies losing their second game in three outings with a 12-point loss to Cranbourne at Kalora Park on Saturday.

The Magpies wasted a stack of possession and a three-to-four goal breeze in the first quarter, kicking 4.6 to 2.0 to let Eagles off the hook.

Cranbourne kicked eight goals to three after quarter time for a narrow but convincing victory.

Ryan Jones filled the shoes of injured skipper Marc Holt; kicking four goals, while two to Zak Roscoe and fine games from ruckman Michael Boland, the pacy Dylan Cavalot, and reliable defender Jordy

Bertrand got the Eagles across the line.

Jake Richardson kicked four for the Magpies with Dean Kelly and Ben King also making valuable contributions.

Berwick took the sting out of its contest with Officer early, kicking 4.4 to 0.2 against the breeze on its way to an even 100-point victory at Edwin Flack Reserve.

And it was the two best players on the ground that did the initial damage, with Mitch Johnson kicking three and Ash Smith capping off a fine first quarter with an early major.

The Wickers compounded the damage with an 8.1 to 3.4 blitz in the second term, opening up a 53-point lead and extending after half time. Johnson finished with six, Luke Nelson four, while Smith, Johnson and Lucas Jellyman-Turner were the Wickers best four-quarter contributors.

In other games, Michael Henry kicked four and Shannon Henwood and Mitch Lewis three each in Doveton’s 54-point victory over Hampton Park, while Beaconsfield continued to impress coach Clint Evans with a 51-point triumph over Tooradin at Westernport Oval.

“I think we’ve played some really good footy over the last three weeks,” Evans said.

“I’ve been really happy with our intensity, our pressure is where we want it to be, and we need to sustain that pressure to stay in games.”

Beau Dowler kicked three for the winners who had Josh Dodsworth, Nick McPherson and youngster Kade Lynch all at the top of their games. Nathan Page kicked three goals for Tooradin, its season now finished with a Round 18 bye approaching.

Pakenham had the bye.

Keen Eagles stay focussed

By David Nagel IT’S rather ironic that Cranbourne’s VFL Women’s side was hurt by the one thing that it had leading into its contest against third-place St Kilda at Peanut Farm Reserve on Sunday - Hope!

St Kilda’s star full-forward - and one of Collingwood’s two marquee signings for the fledgling AFL Women’s competition next year - kicked 10 goals in the Sharks 102-point victory.

Hope took her tally to a remarkable 99 goals with her fifth double-figure haul in the inaugural season of the VFL. She kicked 10 against Geelong, 16 and 10 against Knox, with Sunday’s effort backing up an 11-goal haul against the Eagles back in Round 8.

Eagles coach Kris Smith was lavish in his praise of the star forward.

“She can play alright,” Smith said.

“St Kilda uses her very well, they isolate her and she marks the ball at the highest point and is probably even more dangerous when it hits the ground. She’s quick, really smart, and knows where the goals are - she’s a terrific player.”

Despite the size of the loss, Smith was proud of his side’s effort, which included a highly-competitive 2.1 to 2.4 second term.

“We didn’t play that poorly, our desperation and endeavour was there and we had seven changes heading in which made it difficult to get the mix right,” Smith said.

“Then (full-forward) Kirsten McLeod twisted her ankle in the warm-up before the game so we were pretty much up against it from the start. We tried hard but their skill level killed us in the end.”

Jasmine Grierson stepped into the shoes of McLeod, kicking two, while Leah Olsen, Marlee Tatham, Bianca Jakobsson, Hayley Wildes and Sarah Mooney tried their hearts out for the full four quarters.

Smith said his side was fully focussed for a very winnable game against Geelong in Sunday’s season-ending fixture at Casey Fields.

Madeleine Martin, Millie Shone and Jade Hough all showed great desperation to get the Eagles across the line.

This Saturday’s grand final will take place at Dandenong’s Shepley Oval on Saturday, with the first bounce at 5.30pm.

And Endeavour Hills is still a mathematical possibility of playing finals in VWFL Division 1 despite suffering its fourth consecutive loss against La Trobe Uni on Saturday.

Now dropping to sixth Endeavour Hills face the bottom two sides, Redan and Diamond Creek in the final rounds of the season and will need to win both to keep its faint hopes alive.

KOOWEERUP quick Jason Cox has no shortage of inspiration on hand, whether it’s at his home club at Denhams Road or in the elite junior pathways that he’s making his way through.

He and fellow tall left-armer Mitch Davey are life-long best mates and the 15-year-old has spent the bulk of that time learning as much as humanly possible from Mitch’s dad and revered Demons’ legend, Matt.

“It was a technique thing that he taught me back when I was younger, and a mindset thing too - where to bowl and what to think about when you’re out there,” Cox said.

Then there’s new Kooweerup club coach Mark Cooper and icon Chris ‘Tubsy’ O’Hara.

“I’ve already done a fair bit with Coops,” Cox said.

“He’s so smart - I’ve learnt heaps from him already.

“Everyone loves Tubsy and we all learn so much from him too, but he’s a bit of a weird unit sometimes.”

Through his time at Kooweerup, Cox has acted like a sponge - absorbing as much knowledge about the game as he can.

Now he’s harnessing it all as he moves forward.

He was recently selected in the 18-man Vic Country under-17 squad, and he, Mitch Davey and Mitch Cammarano seem once again entrenched in the South East Country Sharks squad.

Along with the likes of opening batsman Cody Miller and the pro-

digiously-talented McMaster boys, it’s little wonder the next generation of cricketers out of Kooweerup is so highly-regarded.

After playing in Queensland last year at the national schoolboys carnival, Cox has been working his way up through the Vic Country junior ranks under head coach and former Australian Test opening batsman Matthew Elliott.

Still in his under-age year, Cox is again out to learn as much as he can from Elliott; bowling coach, former Sheffield Shield player and one of Victorian Premier Cricket’s greats Allan Wise; and Cricket Victoria high performance manager Tim McCaskill.

“I do drop a little bit too short sometimes so this year I’m really trying to make sure I pitch it up and swing it more,” Cox said.

“That’s what I need to work on.

“From what I can see this year I’m starting to get a bit of inswing to right handers, which is good.

“There’s just a couple of things to remember with my run-up and my delivery stride as well.”

Having suffered a stress fracture in his shin last year and a side strain just weeks before the national carnival, Cox - like most tall fast bowlers - is no stranger to injury. But he knows his body will hardly ever feel 100 per cent, and he’ll keep pushing through to be the best he can - a little like one of his idols, Australian superstar Mitchell Starc.

“I just want to play my best cricket at the highest level I can and keep improving all the time,” Cox said.

By Derek Ogden IT'S hard to take seriously a car that’s named after a spiky plant that lives in desolate sun-scorched, rockstrewn deserts.

There again, to exist in such a harsh and lifeless environment shows a degree of strength and the ability to adapt.

Maybe this is what Citroen had in mind when it thought up the moniker ‘Cactus’ for its compact hatchback.

The Citroen C4 Cactus comes in two Exclusive versions featuring extensive standard equipment and reasonable pricing - $26,990 for a turbocharged PureTech petrol manual and $29,990 for a semi-automatic

Top up or down, the Mini Cooper S Convertible maintains the classic Mini character

Mini pup pedigree

By Derek Ogden LIKE a family of overachievers, the Mini continues to pump out pups of outstanding pedigree.

The latest offspring to plough a precocious furrow through the automotive paddock is the convertible.

The third generation Mini convertible takes the place of the cabriolet and comes in Cooper and Cooper S specification, priced from $37,900 and $45,400, plus on-road costs respectively.

That’s $4800 less for Cooper and $5750 for Cooper S compared with the superseded cabrio.

Our test vehicle came with Convenience and Multimedia Pro packages, hoicking the price to $56,030, plus on-roads.

From all angles this is a Mini and with that comes the good and the bad.

Longer and wider than its predecessor, the new convertible maintains the classic lines of the Mini down to the retractable textile roof which mimics the characteristics of the hard top.

The ‘Minimalism’ extends to the profile with short overhangs and chrome band along the shoulder line, the car’s stretched silhouette further accentuated when the soft top is in its stowed spot behind the rear seats.

The test car wore a black soft top with union jack pattern in relief, a $900 option, one of the many helping the Mini make a special statement.

This time around, solid rollover hoops are replaced by a new fully integrated ‘invisible’ rollover protection system that automatically deploys when the car’s safety sensors detect the risk of a rollover.

Large circular chrome-trimmed headlights and hexagonal grille put on a classic Mini face, with the sporting flavour of the Cooper S enhanced by the large air intake, bonnet scoop and brake air ducts, while tail lights cling to the outer edges of the car’s rear to emphasise its low, wide stance, with the sporty Cooper S once again defined by central chrome twin tailpipes and integrated diffuser in the rear bumper.

The premium high performance nature had the new Mini Cooper S convertible featuring bigbolstered sports front seats with optional Chester Malt Brown leather finished in a diamond pattern with contrast piping, a three-spoke John Cooper Works multifunction steering wheel with gearshift paddles and contrast red stitching for the leather wrap, and Black Chequered trim highlights.

The Multimedia Pro Package ($2700), included in the test vehicle, added Navigation System Professional with 8.8-inch monitor, head-up display, Harman/Kardon 12-speaker audio, and DAB+ digital radio.

The Mini Cooper S Convertible is powered by a two-litre four-cylinder TwinPower Turbo petrol engine putting 141 kW from 5000 to 6500 rpm and peak torque of 280 Nm between 1250 and 4000 rpm, with 300 Nm on overboost. This is six kW and 40 Nm more than the previous generation Mini Cooper S cabrio.

Driving the front wheels, the engine is mated to an updated six-speed sports automatic transmission offering smooth, fast gear changes with steering wheel mounted gearshift paddles for manual mode and a Launch Control function for optimised acceleration off the line.

Safety systems including dynamic stability control with anti-lock braking, cornering brake control, dynamic traction control, electronic differential lock control, dry braking function and fading compensation help to provide safe driving.

car added forward collision warning, city braking, high beam assist, active cruise control, tyre pressure monitoring and LED headlights with adaptive cornering function.

A Mini by name, a Mini by nature, the convertible while carrying four seats, realistically is a 2+2. The driver and front passenger are ensconced in comfy, supportive sports-style leather covered seats, while back-seat occupants, despite expanded cabin dimensions, are left with sparse space, especially for the legs.

The two-door nature too has its drawbacks, with entry and exit to the back being accompanied by various uncomfortable contortions, especially with the roof up.

The larger Mini Convertible has increased luggage space that can be further expanded courtesy of the 50/50-split fold rear seat backs, and the load-through facility has been widened. The tailgate opens downwards and can support up to 80kg.

The roof can be fully lowered or raised in about 18 seconds via the toggle switch on the front roof frame up to 30 km/h or using the remote control key fob. It also acts as a sunroof, the front section retracting to any position up to 400 mm.

The range of switches, buttons, knobs and toggles can at first be a bit daunting, but with repeated use everything falls into place for easy operation.

For example, the head-up display can be brought into play simply by the press of a button at the foot of the centre stack.

Calling on some of the best of BMW technology, the Mini Cooper S convertible puts on quite a show for a little car.

Absent is the body flexing found on drop-tops of old; a rigid body structure with special bracing, plus proven McPherson strut front and multilink rear suspension see to that, while responsive Servotronic electric power steering and wheels following the Mini tradition of being close to the four corners of the car deliver a dynamic ride.

Flick a switch directly behind the gearshift and the Mini morphs from an Eco warrior to hot hatch - claiming 5.8 litres per 100 kilometres combined fuel consumption (Green) to clocking 7.1 seconds for the run from rest to 100 kilometres per hour (Sport).

On test the Mini Cooper S Convertible, in Mid mode, clocked up to 13 litres per 100 kilometres in suburban stop / start traffic and hovered around five litres in a motorway stint.

From fuel sipping boulevard cruiser to hot compact hatch, the Mini Cooper S convertible covers, or in this case uncovers, many traditional motoring bases and all with a pleasing price cut over its predecessor.
