Flood of interest By HOLLIE HARRIS STATE Noosa MP Glen Elmes has called in his party’s big guns to lobby the Palaszcuk Government to back his plan to improve Beckmans Road. Mr Elmes met with members of the Palaszczuk Labor Government at Beckmans Road on Tuesday to show them the need to duplicate or extend the road and improve congestion and safety. “Tim Nicholls, Deputy Leader Deb Frecklington and Shadow Minister for Transport and Main Roads Andrew Powell have to come see first-hand the reason this piece of road infrastructure is so important to the Noosa community at large and why it must be prioritised,” Mr Elmes said. A Noosa electorate-wide survey of 23,000 residents late last year showed the biggest concern was the upgrade of Beckman’s Road. There have been a significant number of accidents at the intersection of Beckmans Road and Cooroy-Noosa Road and residents say they find it difficult to get in or out of their own streets during peak hour. Mr Elmes has been committed
to the Beckmans Road congestion issue for more than a decade but his plans have been frustrated several times due to changes in governments and council. “What was once a dirt road to provide an alternate route in the event of flood, Beckmans Road now carries in excess of 19,000 vehicles per day, and must be upgraded to meet the needs of the growing community, which includes two large schools and several new housing estates. “Beckmans Road has reached saturation point and as a result has created gridlock conditions at major intersections that feed into and out of Eumundi Noosa Road and impede the safety of both road users and pedestrians,” Mr Elmes said The project will be broken into three stages and will take six months of planning to be ready for stage one. “As soon as we get the green light, we will be ready to start stage one six months from then,” Mr Elmes said. Stage one will duplicate part of Beckmans Road to create a local traffic route and a through traffic route which Mr Elmes said should clear up a large part of the congestion. Noosa MP Glen Elmes meets with Labor Leader Tim Nicholls, Deputy Leader Deb Frecklington and Shadow Minister for Transport and Main Roads Andrew Powell at Beckmans Road.
