By DAVID NAGEL ELLIE Blackburn is the perfect example of the changing face of Australian Rules football.

Starting out as a cute and naive kid in the Beaconsfield Under 9s, Blackburn has emerged as a key figure in the burgeoning world of women’s football.

Blackburn and 15 other pioneers of the women’s game became the face of the code last week when they were named marquee players for the inaugural AFL National Women’s League.

Eight clubs, Adelaide, Brisbane, Carlton, Collingwood, Fremantle, Greater Western Sydney, Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs, have been granted licences to compete in 2017 – with each club allowed two marquee signings.

The 21-year-old, who lives in Casey, joins Katie Brennan as the historic first two signings for the Western Bulldogs.

Blackburn said the talk of a national league was one thing, but the reality was becoming apparent.

“It’s starting to sink in now,” she said.

“Just before the official announcement, all of us girls were in a separate room to the media, and it was just an amazing experience to be sitting around and reflecting on where we’ve come from.

“At the Melbourne-Bulldogs exhibition match in 2013 the word was that we would have a

national league up and running by 2020 – we’re three years ahead of schedule.”

Blackburn has already created history in the women’s game, becoming the first goalscorer in that inaugural exhibition match at the MCG between the Demons and Bulldogs.

But it’s a highlight that has company, with Blackburn having a CV that would be the envy of most footballers around the nation.

Multiple Victorian representations have led to All-Australian selection at both senior and youth girls level, while she has been part of the Melbourne exhibition squad since its inception four years ago.

Not bad for a kid that only took up the game by chance.

“Dad played at Beaconsfield, and still plays Superules, and a friend of his was coach of the under-9s back then,” Blackburn said.

“I filled in one day, really enjoyed the experience, fell in love with the game and haven’t stopped playing ever since.”

The accolades flowed from early in her career, winning club and league best and fairest against the boys, being the leading goal-kicker for her club, and captaining the Victorian School Sports Under 16s team to the National title.

So has she had time to reflect on where it all started?

“Yeah, I have a little bit,” she said.

“I was sitting at home the other day and had time to sit back and relax and just have a think about what has happened, and where it all started.

“It’s exciting, dreams come true, and I would never have imagined that things would have played out this way.

“It’s a childhood dream and now the dream’s a reality.”

Ellie said with her family still living in Endeavour Hills there was no shortage of local support coming her way.

“I still have a lot of support from the players and coaches who were involved in those early days and I hold that support very close to me,” she said.

“Those are the people that have supported me all the way through, far and wide, and have made the journey so enjoyable.”

She said she was still coming to grips with her ascension through the ranks, which brought with it a leadership role and an almost hero worship from the younger girls in the game.

“It’s hard to imagine myself that way,” she said.

“I was just a kid who loves football, but now girls come up to me and say ‘I really look up to you and want to follow in your footsteps’ and that’s a feeling that’s hard to explain. It’s a really special feeling and one that I’m keen to embrace.”

A SERIAL disqualified driver who drove down Monash Freeway’s emergency lane to escape from pursuing police then urinated in front of parkland pedestrians, a court heard.

Angelo Madafferi, 21, of Hallam asked his lawyer if his impending jail term could wait until after lunch at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 1 August.

He had pleaded guilty to dangerous driving as well as driving an unregistered vehicle while disqualified three times in a week in Hampton Park, Doveton and Narre Warren.

During the last offence on 29 May, police followed Madafferi and another male in a white Commodore with incorrect number-plates from a fast-food outlet on Belgrave-Hallam Road, Hallam.

Police saw the car disobey a red

turning-arrow onto a Monash Freeway on-ramp about 4.40pm.

Other afternoon peak-traffic moved out of the way of the car, which was driven down the freeway’s emergency stopping lane and turned north at Ernest Wanke Road, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court was told.

The empty car was found by police parked on the wrong side of Riflebird Avenue.

At a nearby park, Madafferi was found urinating in front of passersby.

Madafferi denied knowing anything about the abandoned Commodore until police found documents with his name inside the vehicle.

The car was impounded on the spot.

Madafferi also pleaded guilty to making the threat “he owes me money by tomorrow or he’s dead” to

an occupant behind a front security door at a Narre Warren South home in March.

On 30 September, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court had disqualified Madafferi from driving for 12 months and put him on a community corrections order over 26 offences that were mainly driving related.

A Corrections officer told the court that the accused’s engagement with the CCO was “poor”.

Since October, Madafferi hadn’t completed an hour of his 250-hour work order.

Madafferi’s lawyer said the accused had been recently employed and training as an earth-mover and had completed a certificate three in civil construction.

“This is the first time in years he’s done something with his career,” the lawyer said.

“There’s no way he’ll comply

with a corrections order.”

Magistrate Julie O’Donnell retorted: “That’s lucky because he won’t be getting one.”

Ms O’Donnell noted the accused’s “ridiculous” criminal history - including 11 driving suspended or disqualified - and non-compliance with court orders.

“You’re entering into (jail with) parole. Clearly he shouldn’t be driving on our roads.”

She cancelled the community corrections order and sentenced Madafferi to 21 months’ jail - including re-sentencing for last year’s offences.

Madafferi was also convicted, fined $2000 and disqualified from driving for three years.

He will be eligible for parole in nine months.

But the novel idea, which would see the community choose the name of the planned four theatre complex, has had ideas rolling into The News.

In a letter to the editor Di Loft of Tooradin said: “‘Crannywood’, a play on Hollywood and ‘Meteor’, in recognition of the meteorites originally discovered in the locality.”

On Facebook, Cranbourne resident Deborah Flint-Dubois suggested, ‘Flicks Cinema Cranbourne’.

Syd Edwards and Monika Bradford said: “Cranbourne Entertainment Centre or Cranbourne Entertainment Complex.”

And Beverley Dawes doesn’t really care.

“As long as we get a cinema in Cranbourne, don’t care what they call it, just so long as we get good movies,” she said.

Other name suggestions include: The Cranbourne Movie House, Cranmax, The CranBourne Identity, Cranflix, C-inn Cinemas (short for The Cranbourne Inn), Flick Stop and The Movie Stables.

DATA released by Victorian Health Services Performance on Monday 1 August shows emergency room waiting times at Casey Hospital in Berwick have dramatically increased.

The percentage of emergency room presentations at Casey Hospital that were not treated in a desirable time leapt from 19 per cent in April to June 2015 to 29 per cent in the same time this year.

That percentage increase translates to 674 patients that were not treated in a timely manner in the Emergency Department.

The data also shows an increase from this time last year in the number of patients that waited more than four hours in the emergency room and were not admitted to hospital from 446 to 717 patients.

There has also been an increase in ambulance waiting times for patient drop-off at Casey Hospital with an increase of 14 per cent more ambulances waiting more than 40 minutes than last year.

Member for South-Eastern Metropolitan Region Gordon Rich-Phillips said the blow out of wait times at Casey Hospital was unacceptable.

“It is unacceptable that Casey Hospital’s emergency department is missing targets on basic performance

measures including treatment times and ambulance transfer times,” he said.

“Daniel Andrews needs to provide urgent support to hard working doctors and nurses at Casey Hospital to stop this getting even worse.”

A spokesperson from Casey Hospital has defended the operation of the emergency department, saying the high volume of patients is being seen in a timely manner.

“Casey Hospital’s emergency department is a very busy emergency department, providing excellent care while seeing more patients than ever before,” the spokesperson said.

“The emergency department at Casey Hospital continues to treat the most urgent cases in a timely manner.”

The spokesperson also said more than 90 per cent of emergency patients not admitted at Casey Hospital stay less than four hours which was above the state target of 80 per cent.

While the performance of the emergency department has been called into question, the staff at Casey Hospital say they are performing well in other healthcare services.

“Casey Hospital is also proud to have achieved a significant reduction in the total elective surgery waiting list,” the spokesperson said.

MEET Miss Jones, or as she is affectionately called ‘Missy’ by her new Cranbourne South family.

The Mornington Peninsula Animal Shelter lucked out when the Joneses heard about their pig.

‘Truffles’ as she was once known had been awaiting a home at the shelter after she was found lost in Somerville in June.

But the minute Chloe Jones, 21, got tagged in a Facebook post about Truffles, she knew her dad, Mark, would say yes to a new female friend for their growing passel of pigs.

Truffles has been affectionately renamed, ‘Missy’ by the Jones family and now resides on the family's acreage with new best friends, Benji and Choppy.

But Chloe said it might take some time for the trio to figure out who’s boss.

“Dad tried to introduce Choppy and Missy, but it didn’t go so well, they just have to get the pecking order in place,” Chloe said.

“Pigs are so smart, the same thing happened when we introduced Choppy to Benji, but they are really good friends now.”

Chloe said her pigs might be the only ones on the block, but they prove to be fantastic pets.

“Pigs serve so many purposes and are great for our garden,” she said.

The Joneses small farm will soon grow with the addition of chickens.

POLICE have stepped up their search for two men who attempted to kidnap a 13-year-old boy in Narre Warren.

The News reported the frightening encounter in July and on Tuesday 2 August police released an image of a white sedan in the hope fresh evidence will come to light.

The teenage boy was walking alone in parkland adjacent to The Esplanade, at Berwick Springs Reserve, just before 5.30pm on Sunday 17 July.

He was on the footpath when

a 1990s model white Holden Commodore sedan with black rims stopped on the road.

The man in the passenger seat got out and grabbed the boy by the hand and said “you’re coming with me”.

The man tried pulling the boy toward the car, but the boy managed to kick him in the shin and ran off.

The man tried to follow the boy but gave up and got back into the car and the two men drove off.

The Cranbourne school boy described the man who ap-

proached him as overweight, wearing a black balaclava, black zip-up hooded top, black jeans and black gloves.

The man driving the car is described as aged between 70-80-years-old, long greying hair and beard and was wearing a black zip-up jumper with a Harley Davidson emblem.

The boy’s dad was called to the scene and police attended, but no-one was traced.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the Narre Warren police station as soon as possible on 9705 3111.

But what can you do if your home is invaded by balaclavaclad thieves?

Slater and Gordon criminal lawyer Veronika Drago explains how self-defence used wrongly in certain circumstances could result in imprisonment.

Ms Drago represents clients from across Melbourne and appears in suburban courts, including Dandenong and Frankston and advises that triple-zero be a home owner’s first point of call.

“Home owners should never approach a home invader where retreat is possible,” Ms Drago said.

“In circumstances where retreat is possible but the home owner instead decides to use force, this could expose the home owner to criminal liability.”

Such force should only be

used in circumstances where a home owner believes that it is necessary to defend themselves, another or their property, she explains.

“The force must always be reasonable and proportionate to the threat to their personal safety, the safety of another or the property damage.

“A person is also entitled to rely on self-defence if they take steps to forestall a threatened attack before it has begun. The key issue is whether the home owner’s perception of danger led him or her to believe that the use of defensive force was necessary and that that belief was based on reasonable grounds.”

With baseball bats a common go-to for residents fearful of their safety, Ms Drago told The News the use of weapons is based on the type of threat a resident is facing from the intruder.

“Weapons can only be used in circumstances where there is a direct and imminent threat from an intruder, however it must be proportionate,” she said.

“A home owner cannot simply hit an intruder with a baseball bat just because they are

standing in their kitchen as this would be disproportionate.”

If a home owner badly injures an intruder Ms Drago said it again depends on circumstance.

“A person who injures an intruder could face criminal charges and be found guilty of an offence if the court finds that they did not act in self-defence,” Ms Drago said.

“They could also possibly face civil action. Again, the issue of proportionality must be considered.

“The home owner, in extreme examples, could also possibly face civil action if their actions caused serious injury to the intruder.”

Ms Drago said an intruder may have the right to pursue a civil claim against the home owner if injured in some circumstances.

But, “a home owner would have the right to dispute the claim”.

The most recent crime statistics show a steep rise in overall crime in the City of Casey - up more than 15 per cent on a per capita basis in the past year.

Letters Check the scoreboard I REFER to Rex Flannery’s scurrilous letter in last week’s News.

I don’t normally respond to Flannery’s letters. I have never met this character, and there is no point responding to someone who blindly pursues a personal and conflicted agenda without possessing any of the facts.

Once again Flannery makes a fool of himself!

He alleges in his letter that I was in a backroom somewhere when A Current Affair was allowed to film the most recent council meeting.

I was in fact in hospital undertaking some tests.

The following day, when I was able to, I conducted an interview with A Current Affair, where I spoke about the great things that are happening in Casey, such as the recent and independent customer satisfaction survey where our council achieved above the state average in every measure, and a whopping seven points above in the area of overall council direction.

It seems that our residents are telling us a very different and positive story than the one Flannery has been manufacturing.

It is always better to stick to the facts, and you can never argue with the scoreboard.

I AM pleased to share some of the work council is doing in the area of continuous improvement towards cost saving measures in response to Mr Glazebrook’s demand (Just Tell Us, News, 28 July).

We’ve been working to achieve efficiencies throughout this council term to provide the best services at the lowest cost to ratepayers.

In fact, in 2015/16 we saved $3 million through evaluation, innovation and transformation of our services.

Some of the savings included: - Better contract negotiations for waste services and parks and open spaces maintenance ($1.2m); - Reviewing our operations, improving and digitising some of our processes ($385,000); - Conversion of street lighting to LED ($650,000).

I’d love to share more but there is simply not enough space.

Keep an eye out as council will be reporting back to the community on its savings and initiatives, which are expected to total $15 million over the next five years!

I think all residents, even Mr Glazebrook, will be impressed.

A DEVON Meadows teenager has won the highest award at scout level.

Teagan Taylor was awarded the Australian Scout Medallion in a special ceremony by the 1st Devon Meadows Scout Group.

At the awards night Teagan spoke of her desire to continue on her journey and set new goals to achieve the Queen’s Scout and Baden-Powell Scout awards.

Juliana Pearson from the scout group said: “Teagan’s achievement is a direct result of her tenacity, drive and willingness to accept challenges head on and push through.

“In her journey Teagan has matured as a scout who visibly demonstrates the core values of the scouting movement and leadership skills of fairness, kindness and understanding amongst her peers.”

DRIVERS parking their car at Merinda Park railway station should invest in one-way numberplate screws.

In one afternoon, four cars were targeted by hungry thieves on a registration plate blitz.

Unfortunately, the four cars were parked in a position at the Cranbourne North station which isn’t covered by surveillance.

Police are appealing to the Casey public in the hope that someone will present useful information on the thefts.

The cars were targeted on Thursday 28 July.

THE Don’t Drive and Pokemon signs have been validated after a man crashed into a Berwick school - you guessed it - playing Pokemon Go. It is understood the Berwick motorist was negotiating a roundabout when he lost control at Flowerfield Close.

He ran off the road through a fence and into a school portable building. Luckily no-one was injured.

Casey Highway Patrol is investigating the PokeStop crash, which occurred on Ridgemont Drive about 6.50pm on Thursday 29 July.

Police have been told the local man was trying to capture a Pokemon Go creature on his phone when he lost control of his car.

But a police report has alleged that the 19-year-old “did not level up nor collect any stardust or candies only debris from the crash”.

“Any PokeBalls, eggs or potions the driver may have had remaining only attracted police, leaving the wild Pokemon for another day.”

The driver returned a negative preliminary breath test, however it is expected he will be charged on summons with careless driving.

ANYONE still with doubts on the consequences of breaching intervention orders?

A serial family violence offender had been in custody since being found in her parents’ bedroom the day before - allegedly at the parents’ invitation.

Police stated there was no violence, no threats and absolute co-operation and remorse by the 32-year-old woman during her arrest.

Against her was that the full intervention order - just a fortnight old - barred her from being within 200 metres of her parents’ house and that she’d been fined and put on community corrections orders for similar breaches in the past.

She was jailed for 30 days - less the one day in remand custody.

NOT a word has come from Narre Warren South MP Judith Graley’s office after a Sunday Herald Sun report on a 2015 overseas trip.

The paper didn’t have much luck getting details from Ms Graley on the length and cost of the trip, nor the exact destinations, which was apparently somewhere in Europe.

It reported that little could be gleaned from Ms Graley’s report on the trip.

Star News has also put in a fruitless enquiry to Ms Graley and the State Government.

There has been no reply and, by the way, also none from Opposition Scrutiny of Government spokeswoman Inga Peulich.

Animal activist and founder of the not-for-profit organisation Oscar’s Law, Debra Tranter, not only publicised their condition, but secretly planted hidden cameras on the property.

Ms Tranter was shocked at the state of the dogs and has followed the outcome to the very end.

“The dogs were chained to poles and some to trees all day, on short leads of around two metres,” Ms Tranter said of the appalling conditions.

“It was very obvious they had no life, these dogs were living a life of deprivation.”

The welfare of the dogs was first reported by The News in April this year, and since then the owner, Troy Scoble has faced court on 53 charges. Before Mr Scoble attended the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court, there was even a change.org petition set up by Ben Wild of the Animal Justice Party.

The petition asked Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce, to “save the Blind Bight dogs before it’s too late” – 15,862 supporters signed the petition.

And Twitter wasn’t far behind, with relentless campaigning online.

Mr Scoble escaped conviction by Magistrate Pauline Spencer because he had no prior convictions and was of “good character”.

But he was ordered to pay a donation to the court fund of $1000 and $1500 in Casey

Mr Scoble was also ordered to reduce the number of dogs on his property to four, or obtain a permit for more dogs within 60 days.

Twenty-nine dogs were seized from the Wild Duck Way farm on Tuesday 26 July.

Ms Tranter is calling it a huge win for the dogs - but still has a long way to go to change the legislation that kept them there for so long.

“Legislation didn’t deem this cruel,” she said about the legal length of tethering dogs.

“The law says dogs can be chained legally if they have food and water and we couldn’t save these dogs based on animal welfare grounds,” Ms Tranter said.

The story attracted huge online outrage and Ms Tranter said the fact the law prevented further action was what sparked the attention.

“I think that surprised and

angered people - what the community views as cruelty, the law doesn’t,” she said.

“Every time we put a call out to the public they responded and that’s indicative of the way to we treat and see our animals, we are a nation that loves our pets.”

During Ms Tranter’s fourweek campaign dozens of people contacted her asking how they could be of help to free the 33 American bulldogs and Staffordshire bull terriers.

The animal lover has since contacted the City of Casey and offered for Oscar’s Law to pay for the dogs to be trained so they can eventually be rehomed.

“Because they’ve been seized ownership can only be determined by a magistrate, so council can’t re-home or vet work the dogs until it goes to court,” Ms Tranter said.

“The dogs are in limbo they have to sit in a pound until the court case.”

School cash FOUR Cranbourne schools have received cash thanks to Lynbrook Village Shopping Centre.

The centre launched its inaugural Cash 4 Classrooms program at the end of May. Shoppers earned one point for every dollar spent at Lynbrook Village and were invited to pledge their points to the school of their choice.

The four schools with the highest number of points were awarded cash bonuses.

Lynbrook Village Centre manager Maree Abbott presented $3000 to Lynbrook Primary School, $2000 to St Francis de

Sales Primary School, $1000 to St Kevin’s Primary School and $500 to St Therese’s.

“Schools are always looking for ways to raise funds and this was an excellent opportunity for shoppers to earn points to support the participating school of their choice and for Lynbrook Village to give back to the community,” Ms Abbott said.

Lynbrook Primary will use it’s donation to fund well-being initiatives arising from the school’s student forum and purchase a friendship seat and uniforms for the school’s ‘Friendship Makers’ program.

its $2000 to purchase fruit trees to establish an orchard for its community garden.

At St Kevin’s the money will help support the school’s bike education program.

“We have raised funds for a number of bikes, helmets and hairnets. We have had a number of teachers trained and are working with the City of Casey and RACV to implement the program. Some of the children will be riding their own bikes and as this program will be ongoing we will need multiple bike racks. The initial cost is around $4500 and so the $1000 will be very helpful,” principal Annie Miers said.

The disabled to go digital IT’S a new digital age for Casey residents seeking a disabled parking permit.

According to the Casey Council, it’s an easier and faster experience - one they’re saying is an Aussie first.

The council has introduced a new service which allows residents to apply for a disabled parking permit online with their doctor.

Casey mayor Sam Aziz said what was an arduous task for some of the city’s most vulnerable residents had been made simple. “Previously, applying for a permit required obtaining a paper form from the council, completing it, visiting a doctor to get it signed off and then coming back to a council office to have the permit issued,� Cr Aziz said.

The new digital process allows residents to visit their doctor and fill out the online form together, which is then automatically submitted to the council for consideration.

The streamlined process is a part of the council’s ‘Digital Casey Strategy’. “The council is working to create innovative services that are easy to use and work effectively, with progress being made to digitise and simplify some of the council’s other

‘Manufacturing is alive’

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS BERWICK-BASED entrepreneurs Ron Weinzieri and Tim Bowman may look like an odd couple - one in a dapper suit, the other in the Zuckerbergstyle T-shirt and jeans.

The pair were among guest speakers at a Casey Cardinia Region business forum on “21st Century Business - faster, leaner, better”.

Both have prospered in their separate ventures from an innovative, forward-looking approach.

Mr Weinzieri, of APT Advanced Manufacturing, said he disagreed with dire forecasts for Australian manufacturing, especially with the shutdown of the automotive industry.

Against the alleged tide, APT - a small business which has long made automotive components, instruments and assemblies - had just generated its best year in its 24-year-history.

The result was built on large defence-industry, bio-medical and aerospace contracts locally, nationally and globally. The defence opportunities alone surpassed the size of the Australian auto industry, Mr Weinzieri said.

“We tend to find that market is enormous.

“Manufacturing is alive and as strong as it’s ever been.”

It was a matter of not doing manufacturing like it was done in the past.

APT restructured to a 24-7 production model and bought world-class technology, figuring it would give it more flexibility and speed.

It could also better give what its customers wanted, when they wanted it and with “zero defects”, Mr Weinzieri said.

He’s forecasting between 50-100 per cent further growth in the 2016-’17 year. On the other hand, Mr Bowman took the audience through the “whiteknuckle ride” of his 18-month business.

He and his wife, both being teachers, created Class Creator software after seeing first-hand the long-winded “inefficient” process of assigning kids to particular school classes.

Class Creator assigns children to classes, taking into account a host of factors such as each child’s behaviour, special needs, ESL as well as avoiding diabolical pairings of kids.

Or as Mr Bowman puts it, ensuring ‘Molokov’ isn’t put in the same class as ‘Cocktail’.

Despite two rival competitors - one who put a patent on their technology - the software has been sold into 295 schools in 10 countries, including Australia, Iceland, the US and UK. Another speaker Asyl Haidar of Pitcher Partners presented some of the most innovative ideas in the business world.

Such as BMW investing in a “pay as you use” model in which customers register to drive an electric car without owning one.

Mr Haidar also noted John Deere use of sensors to collect wide-ranging data on farmers’ behaviour on their tractors.

That data is used by John Deere to advise farmers on best cropping practice, and to branch out into providing insurance.

Other speakers included Annemarie Cross on digital podcasts, and Patrick Ramsden on digital loyalty card systems.

LIKE the region itself, the Casey Cardinia Business Hub has grown.

Casey mayor Sam Aziz officially opened the hub’s second phase - a complex with 150 working desks and 40 office spaces at 66 Victor Crescent in Narre Warren on Friday.

Cr Aziz said developments like the hub - a partnership between the City of Casey and the Waterman Group - were critical to promoting innovation and economic growth in the region.

“Seven out of 10 residents leave Casey to go to work,” Cr Aziz said.

“For us, this is unacceptable. We need to provide employment opportunities closer to home.”

Cr Aziz has personal experience of the frustration experienced by commuters.

He said the daily Monash grind forced him to give up his career in the Customs Department to find work closer to home.

“Casey has a population of 300,000 people and it is growing by 10,000 every year, so it doesn’t take a mathematical genius to work out that there will be a population of half a million people in 20 years' time,” he said.

“Employment aspirations in the City of Casey are very real.”

Cr Aziz paid tribute to Neville Waterman of the Waterman Group for his vision.

“It is inspirational to work with someone like Neville, who thinks outside the square and delivers outcomes for the City of Casey.”

Mr Waterman said he loved working with small businesspeople, who regularly inspired him by sharing their dreams.

With tongue in cheek, he suggested the space - next to the original building at 64 Victor Crescent be renamed The Dream Centre.

This was the key message from South East Melbourne Manufacturers Alliance (SEMMA) executive officer Adrian Boden at the organisation’s 13th annual general meeting on Tuesday 26 July.

“Between our companies we have an incredibly diverse range of capabilities and technologies that could only benefit from more collaboration,” he said.

Mr Boden said SEMMA continued to engage with the CSIRO, Swinburne University and the Australian Synchrotron.

“This year has been one of collaboration and promoting the need for collaboration,” he said.

“The numbers do not lie. We perform very badly on the global indexes for business to business and business to research and development collaboration.

“It is the critical area where Australian manufacturing needs to improve.

“We will continue to develop opportunities and solutions to improve this situation but it can only be achieved with your engagement.”

Mr Boden said SEMMA would increase branding and marketing efforts over the next 12 months to boost its

SEMMA executive officer Adrian Boden, president Simon Whiteley, secretary Sandra George and treasurer Markus Oswald.

“We need to significantly expand our membership to make us even more relevant as well as financially secure.

“It is important that SEMMA is recognised as truly representative of the region."

SEMMA President Simon Whiteley said the board had focused on how to engage with the government, research bodies, educators and the community “to support the emergence of the region as Victoria’s largest manufacturing base and the nation’s premier manufacturing centre”.

Flying high on persistence FOUNDER of RedBalloon Naomi Simson will speak about the power of persistence at the 2016 Casey Cardinia Region Women’s Lunch.

The lunch is being held as part of Victoria’s annual Small Business Festival, which runs state-wide from 1-31 August.

The lunch will provide the region’s business women with the opportunity to network while enjoying a two-course lunch, along with a glass of bubbly on arrival.

Taekwondo champion

By DAVID NAGEL RAYMOND Liew has transformed himself from a five-year-old who didn’t enjoy the sport into one of Australia’s top junior exponents of the Korean martial art of Taekwondo.

The 16-year-old Endeavour Hills youngster booked his ticket to the Oceania Championships in Suva, Fiji, in November, with victory earlier this month in the WTF Presidents Cup in Canberra.

Competitors from as far and wide as French Polynesia, Korea and New Zealand took part in the event, with hosted different weight categories in three age groups, Cadets, Juniors and Seniors.

Liew defeated Brazilian Diego Cordeiro in the final of the Junior Male A-55 category to secure one of two spots in the division.

The high-skill and dedication that was on display was a far cry from the disinterested child who first tied up a belt.

“It was nothing serious to start with, it was more to get me out of the house, and I really didn’t enjoy it, to be honest,” said the second dan black belt.

“But now I love it. I started competing about three years ago and it changed the way I think about the sport.

“At the club you just fight against the same people, but with competition you meet new people, enjoy different experiences, and see a variety of different fighting styles.”

The year-11 student at Wellington Secondary College in Mulgrave trains at Joon No’s Taekwondo in Dandenong, and has already had overseas experience competing in events in Thailand and Korea.

Liew said those experiences were invaluable for his progression.

Taekwondo is a sport where competitors score points by landing punches and kicks on their opponent’s chest guards and helmets that have electron-

ic sensors attached.

There is no punching to the head, with one point scored for a punch or a basic kick to the chest, two points for a spinning or back kick, and three points for a successful kick to the head.

Liew said having the right mix of technique, fitness and tactics was crucial to success.

“At training we concentrate a lot on fitness and technique and put them both to the test in separate sparring sessions,” Liew said before praising his coach, Master No, for the impact he has had on his competition results.

“My coach has really given me a different perspective to my fights,” Liew said.

“When you’re concentrating so hard on fighting it’s difficult to build a strategy, but he helps me with my tactics during each fight.

“And I want to thank my mum (Fiona). She has been there for me all the way and she supports me, takes me to training, and pays for the competitions.”

Stingrays poised for big stage

THE four Dandenong Stingrays invited to participate in this year’s NAB AFL draft combine will be hoping the event helps to springboard them to a career on the big stage.

Vice-captains Josh Battle (Doveton) and Myles Poholke (Sorrento), along with Bailey Morrish (Beaconsfield) and Mitch McCarthy (Mount Eliza), have been invited to the combine, and they each bring something very different to the table.

Key forward Battle has only played four games for the Rays so far this season due to his AIS, Vic Country and Haileybury commitments. But he’s already shown enough to suggest he’ll be one of the most sought-after players at the position in this year’s draft class.

“He’s got really good hands, he’s a genuine goal-kicker and he has great running ability,” said Stingrays coach Craig

Black about Battle.

“Young players are always evolving and developing, and he’s gone into the midfield on occasions too.

“He’s got a great work ethic and he’s super competitive (by nature).”

Black is also bullish about the future prospects of half-back flanker Morrish.

“He’s an interesting one - he had a really solid pre-season,” Black said.

“He’s got good pace and he’s a long kick of the footy, and he also tested really high in terms of his agility.

“He’s got the agility to really defend players one-on-one.”

McCarthy - an athletic, contested-marking big man - looms as one of the real x-factors in this year’s combine pool.

“He’s a bit of a different type of player to those who normally go to the combine,” Black admitted.

“He’s played maybe 10 games of footy in four years.”

McCarthy has spent time in the US exploring a potential career in basketball, but most recently has spent a frustrating stint on the sidelines with a broken foot.

Still, his upside is almost as big as his frame.

“Athletically, he’s got attributes that not many 198-centimetre players have,” he said.

“You’d think he was 185 with the way he moves.”

Finally, on tough midfielder Poholke, Black said his overhead marking and sheer ballwinning ability were two of his biggest strengths - adding that he’d also worked tirelessly on building up his endurance.

“As a program, we’re really excited to give all these kids a chance to fulfil their dreams, and this (combine) is a stepping stone towards that,” Black concluded.

Stadium dreams shaping up CASEY Basketball Association is keenly watching its future start to assemble.

Construction is underway for the Casey Regional Basketball and Netball Facility in Cranbourne East, as the City of Casey and the State Government united to upgrade the old stadium.

Redevelopment works on the south-eastern showpiece indoor stadium - featuring five new courts, including a 1500-capacity premiere showcourt and new amenities - will pave a strong pathway for Casey Basketball Association players from grassroots to the peaks of elite Victorian basketball.

From junior and senior domestic competitions all the way through to Casey Cavaliers’ three Big V teams, players from across the south-east are eagerly awaiting the completion

of the $18-million complex on Berwick-Cranbourne Road, tentatively scheduled for completion in early 2017.

Casey Basketball Association general manager Tammy Bower said it’s amazing to watch the framework go up as the new-look stadium takes shape.

“It’s exciting - we drive past that way to come into the stadium and you see construction workers there and it’s great to start thinking about the next phase,” Bower said.

“We’ve got so many teams here that can fill it already ... we can occupy it to our full ability.

“Definitely excited about our teams and members getting into this facility and making sure its affordable.”

The council estimates over 750,000 visitors will use the facility each year, and Bower

said the association was keen to get the ball rolling with its first tournament scheduled for the 2017 Labor Day long weekend.

The association was thrilled to see the stadium overhauled to accommodate the great interest in basketball throughout the south-east - with more facilities needed in the future to keep up with that demand.

“The City of Casey needs a stadium like this,” Bower said.

“We’ve got 10 courts here and in the short future we’re going to need more again - maybe not at this venue but another one.

“We’d love to have a facility in the Clyde area in the future too.”

THE challenge is there for the Casey Cavs. It’s right in front of them.

When Stewart Baird’s Big V Division 1 basketball men step out on to the floor at Warrnambool this Saturday night for their qualifying final, it’ll be in front of a group of loud, parochial and potentially even hostile fans who want nothing more than to see them fail.

And that sort of challenge is exactly what these Cavs play for.

From their perspective, the pressure is all on the home side.

They roared back against the Cavs last time they played in Cranbourne in June and almost beat them, despite missing their best player - lights-out scorer and former Adelaide 36er, Nathan Sobey.

Now that he’s back in the line-up, and import Xavier Johnson-Blount is firing on all cylinders, the Seahawks will be expected to win.

“They’re all about scoring, whereas we’re all about stopping teams that do that,” Baird said.

“Championship teams are built on great defences.”

It would be going a bit far to classify this weekend’s game as

a free hit for the Cavs, but they have earned the double chance and a loss would see them back on their home floor at Cranbourne the following week - almost certainly as part of a double-header with the Cavs’ Division 2 women’s team.

Baird said when his side last played the Seahawks back in June, it signalled the start of a tough stretch of games where the Cavs struggled to put full, four-quarter performances together.

But in the past few weeks, they’ve arrested that slide and their consistency is once again a real strength.

“It’s about understanding that games have ebbs and flows,” Baird said.

“How you stop those moments from bottoming out that’s the key, and it’s a mental thing.”

Baird said the experience in his Cavs group would be a great strength this weekend, adding that it could even be the difference-maker.

Chief’s high hopes TAKING the national women’s competition to the next level is the aim of the new head of WNBL, Sally Phillips.

The Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL) announced Phillips’ appointment on Tuesday morning, with the former player having been extensively involved in the sport for over 20 years.

Phillips has been involved with the WNBL from the playing side as well as in administration, as she has been Dandenong Basketball’s Commercial Operations manager for the last three years, and feels her appointment is the next great accolade for her basketball career.

“It’s obviously a huge thrill for me to be joining the team at Basketball Australia and having been involved in the sport for such a long time - initially as a player and in administration for the last three years in the league with the Jayco (Dandenong) Rangers - I feel like I’ve been given a green and gold jersey again,” Phillips said.

“To be given that chance to be working in the WNBL - to take what is the second best league in the world - is a huge thrill.

“I’m excited, I’m nervous as you can see, but I’m over the moon that I’ve been given this great opportunity.”

Phillips’ role will include working with member clubs in driving the strategy and marketing of the WNBL - with Dandenong Rangers, Melbourne Boomers and Bendigo Spirit forming part of the 2016/’17 eight-team league.

“Top of my list - with the season only being a couple of months out - is hitting the ground running and building those relationships with our clubs as they’re the key stakeholders of our league,” Phillips said.

It brings Phillips back to the WNBL arena after a 10-year playing career where she shone across 193 games with the Australian Institute of Sport, Melbourne, Dandenong

Basketball Australia general manager of Competitions Paul Maley believes Phillips is ‘the complete package’ when it comes to her experience on and off the court and it makes her a fantastic person to lead the WNBL. “She has been involved in women’s basketball in Australia for over 25 years as a player, administrator and marketer and has the skill set required to lift the visibility of the

“This, combined with her intricate knowledge of the league and genuine passion for the game makes her the perfect appointment.

“We’re just thrilled to be able to welcome Sally, we feel this is an important step for us as a league, to have someone like Sally join the team and drive the WNBL forward.”

Phillips will officially take on the role on Monday 29 August.

Davey cracks the ‘200 club’

By DAVID NAGEL CRANBOURNE midfielder Ryan Davey has taken his seat alongside the greats of the modern game by playing his 200th game for the Eagles against Tooradin on Saturday.

‘Cheekers’ as he is better known, joins current day greats like Narre Warren’s Michael Collins, Beaconsfield’s Daniel Mislicki, Doveton’s Ryan Hendy, Officer’s Ben Tivendale and Pakenham’s Nathan Brown as 200-game players at their respective clubs.

And he is equally as well respected as every other player in that group.

A hard-at-it midfielder, Davey’s ability to break from packs and kick long to superstar fullforward Marc Holt has been of the Eagles’ signature moves of the last 10 years.

Holt - also a 200-gamer - honoured Davey with his pre-match address.

“It’s an honour to have Cheekers join the 200game club, someone who has been a part of the rebuild of the club from the early 2000s,” Holt said.

“It’s an added bonus that he also happens to be a great mate as well as a team-mate.”

Holt said it was a combination of passion and hard work that had got Davey to where he was today, coming back from severe injuries to get to the 200-game club.

Davey is a dual best-and-fairest winner from 2006 and 2013 and a member of the club’s Team of the Last 25 Years. He was also a star in the club’s last senior premiership win in 2011.

Well played Cheekers - one of the great people and great players of the South East Football Netball League.

CRANBOURNE coach Kris Smith has labelled this Saturday’s clash with Seaford as a ‘mini grand final’ after the Eagles powered away for a 98-point victory over Knox on Sunday.

A brilliant seven-goal haul to Kirsten McLeod capped off a great day for the Eagles who burst through the 100-point barrier for the first time in the debut season of the VFL. Smith was delighted with his side’s pride in its team effort on the weekend.

“That was one our best team performances for the year,” he said.

“It was a really even performance across the board, and I struggled to pick someone out as our best player, even though Kirsten (McLeod) kicked seven. She played fantastic but was on the end of some great delivery from our midfield, and some great work down back.”

Smith said McLeod was the embodiment of that team spirit on the weekend.

“I was actually joking with her at half time saying, ‘I bet you can’t kick 10’ and she responded exactly as I would have hoped. She handed off goals to players in a much better position; she could easily have kicked 10.”

Smith lauded the efforts of Kelly Thompson - who shut down the dangerous Chanelle Slater- while Shayla Marsh, Bianca Jakobsson and defender Leah Olsen also drew praise from the coach, who quickly turned his attention to this week’s bumper clash against Seaford.

Cranbourne and Seaford are two of four teams - alongside Geelong and Knox- that joined the top-flight of women’s football this year.

The two teams are desperate to finish the highest ranked of the four on the ladder, and this week’s game -played as a double-header with the Casey Scorpions versus Essendon clash on the main ground at Casey Fields- will go a long way towards deciding that outcome.

“This is our biggest game of the season, sort of a mini grand final if you like, played on the big stage with a lot of pride on the line,” Smith said.

“We want to finish the season as the highest of the four new teams. Seaford has a tougher run home than us, so if we can win this week I’m confident we’ll finish above them. It’s a huge game for both clubs.”

Joining Jakobsson and McLeod as players to look for this week are Hayley Wildes and Marlee Tatham, while the tap work of ruckman Breann Moody will also be important. The girls kick off a great evening of football at 4.25pm, with the VFL clash between the Scorpions and Bombers set for 7pm.

SHOCKWAVES reverberated around the South East Football Netball League on Saturday as news spread that Cranbourne champion Marc Holt had suffered a fractured leg.

Holt, who has kicked more than 900 goals in a stellar career, sustained his injury after an accidental collision with Tooradin’s Adam Galea in the first minute of the third term in Cranbourne’s 79-point victory at Casey Fields.

Cranbourne coach Simon Goosey hopes to regain his star forward during the finals – but the clock is already ticking in a massive race against time.

“Obviously, he’s one of the best players in the league, so we’re going to miss him, but at the same time you can’t build a game plan around one player,” Goosey said.

“The beauty of what we’ve created over the last 18 months means we can structure up tall or small, and players step up and play their role. If that wasn’t the case, we’d be in a bit of trouble right now, but the players and coaches are excited by the challenge, everyone’s embracing it.”

The Eagles booted four goals against the breeze in the opening term and then solidified their advantage with a 6.4-to-0.1 second term – before ramping up their defence in the third.

Youngster Zak Roscoe stood tall in Holt’s absence, booting a career-high seven goals in an eye-catching performance, while Kory Grant and Troy Tharle chimed in with three apiece. Anthony Vella, Glenn Osborne and Anthony Fischer were impressive while the Eagles midfield covered for the loss of Shaun Marusic, who missed with a stiff back.

Galea continued his great form for the Gulls, while Josh Muling and Michael Hobbs did their best to stop the Eagles flow.

Doveton has continued its roller-coaster run with a best-of-the-season 28-point victory over Narre Warren at Robinson Oval.

The fourth-placed Doves are harder to read than Chinese arithmetic as they haven’t strung a win or a loss together for 10 games now.

Doveton’s total team defence suffocated the Magpies who finished four goals short of their previous lowest score for the season.

But it wasn’t all dourness from the Doves, with Shannon Henwood booting five and the likes of Darren Allen, Russ Gabriel and Sam Raru showing the Doves’ top-end talent is the equal of any going around. Michael Collins was superb for the Magpies.

The reigning champs had to dig deep after a slow start, gradually grinding down the Doves in one of the best games for the season.

The Doves took the early initiative, surprising the Magpies with a tough brand of netball in the first half, taking a 13-11 lead at quarter time and extending that to 27-24 at the half. Rahni Samason (goal shooting) and Samantha Kappl (goal attack) were providing headaches, while Linda Hunt (wing attack) and Breanne Miller (wing defence) were matching the mighty Magpie midcourt.

But Narre Warren, through some great attacking play from the likes of Leigh Taylor (wing attack), Tayla Shannon (goal attack) and Chloe Phillips (goal shooting), regained the ascendency in the third term to tie things up at three-quarter time.

Adele Clydesdale (goal keeper) and Kara Hargrave (goal defence) shut the Doves down in the final term, while Phillips was cool in a crisis under the ring. The Magpies scored 14 to nine in the final term to record a thrilling victory.

Cranbourne is about to face its biggest test but can do no more than keep on winning, this time with a 40-31 victory over Tooradin at Casey Fields.

Considering they were dead last after round three it’s been a pretty impressive turnaround.

role for the Eagles, filling in for the absent Sharni Lambden in defence, while Alanah Hardy (goal attack) and Tegan Stahl (goal shooting) were making every post a winner.

But it’s not so rosy for Tooradin.

The Seagulls need to defeat either Hampton Park (4th) or Beaconsfield (2nd) over the next fortnight or miss out on what looked to be a certain finals booking at the start of the year.

It’s been an amazing fall from grace for the Seagulls, who won their first three games and then pushed Narre Warren to the limit in a onegoal loss in round four.

Since then the Gulls have won just four games against the bottom three teams on the ladder.

In other games, Hampton Park tuned up for this week’s big clash against Tooradin with a 5730 win over Berwick, while Beaconsfield continued its stellar season with a 46-28 victory over Pakenham.

The Eagles were well led by the competitive duo of Danni Cameron (goal attack) and Gabby Stinear (goal defence) in defence, while Zoe Mason (wing defence) and Rylee Nelson (wing attack) showed off their ball skills through the midcourt.

Samantha Jelo (goal keeping) did well after half time for the Lions, while Lauren Briggs (goal shooting) showed strong hands against tough opposition and will be a definite star moving forward.

A better way to get jobs done

WINTER obviously isn’t normally the season of choice for an open car motoring but with the Audi TTS’s heated seats, hot air blown onto our necks and a behind-the-seat air deflector we travelled in cosy comfort.

We reckon its sharp lines and interlocking facets make it one of the best looking sports coupes and roadsters on the current market.

Inside, the styling of the TTS roadster is neat and beautifully simple.

We particularly liked the turbine styling of the air vents and the way the controls for

temperature, fan speed and air direction have been integrated into the centre of the vents.

The infotainment system is interesting in that there’s no central screen, rather it’s incorporated in what Audi calls a Virtual Cockpit directly in front of the driver.

The VC can be viewed in different ways; big dials when you’re in a sporting mood, added information with smaller dials when your brain is in cruise mode.

A clever feature is the mounting of the microphones into the safety belts to control the voice activation system and use mobile phones.

Performance is very good and throttle response is excellent with only minimal turbo lag which makes overtaking a breeze and hills almost cease to exist.

Road holding is excellent with a nicely balanced feel at all times and gear changes are very fast and when you select the dynamic modes the exhaust makes all the right burbling and spitting sounds as you zip up and down through the gears.
