“VicRoads will continue to monitor the safety and operation of the intersection and work with the Yarra Ranges Council on a long-term strategic plan for roads in Coldstream,” he said.

Shadow Minister for Roads Ryan Smith was critical of the Andrews Government’s road funding priorities and accused the government of playing politics with the safety of drivers.

“I have waited 20 minutes or more to get out of Killara Road, and I’m sure there will be a major crash with people who are impatient.”

Mr McGann said VicRoads assessed the safety of an intersection, taking into consideration factors such as the speed limits of the intersecting roads, the number of pedestrians, the volume of vehicles and the historical crash record.

“It’s a very difficult spot because you have buses on the right and trucks that park on left-hand side of the highway because of the hamburger place, then there is Station Street coming out onto the highway almost opposite Killara.

A LOCAL MP has renewed a call for traffic lights to be installed at the intersection of Killara Road and Maroondah Highway in Coldstream.

Evelyn MP Christine Fyffe visited Coldstream with state Shadow Minister for Roads Ryan Smith on Thursday 30 June to continue years of lobbying for traffic lights.

“In 2001, I tabled a petition calling for the installation of traffic lights at this intersection, and subsequently raised the matter in parliament on no fewer than seven separate occasions,” Ms Fyffe said.

Ms Fyffe said the increase in tourism to the area had seen a greater impact on the local traffic being able to enter and exit Killara road safely.

Local resident Delia Dewar agreed that traffic lights at the intersection would make driving for both locals and tourists safer and more efficient.

“I find particularly on the weekends to do a right-hand turn from Killara Road onto the highway is virtually impossible - you can sit there for 20 minutes waiting,” she said.

“I have lived here for 12 years, and the volume of traffic is increasing.

“We want to see tourism increasing, but for the residents this intersection is a nightmare.”

Ms Dewar also said the road surface of the intersection was deteriorating and desperately needed to be repaired.

“Also the road is very bad - when I try to turn left from Killara Road, the road is broken; there are big puddles and it is tricky to get out of there as well.”

VicRoads Metro East regional director Aidan McGann said the Killara Road and Maroondah highway intersection was not currently being considered for safety upgrades.

“We have constantly been monitoring the safety and operation of this intersection in Coldstream,” he said.

“The intersection operates well if road users are patient and considerate.”

A DISPLAY launched this week at Healesville Library commemorates the centenary of the 1916 Somme offensive in the second year of WWI. Drawing on memorabilia collected over a lifetime, Badger Creek military historian Rod Wilson has put together a snapshot of life and death on the Western Front.

The Australian War Memorial records that the worst 24 hours in Australian history occurred at Fromelles, France, where Australians suffered 5533 casualties in one night.

The major contribution of Australian troops to the Somme offensive was in the fighting around Pozieres and Mouquet Farm between 23 July and 3 September, as well as several attacks around Flers in November.

Mr Wilson said about half the Australian soldiers on Fromelles would have had their first experience of war on Gallipoli.

As with several items on display, a small black Bible, has a story to tell.

Mr Wilson bought the pocket-size Bible in an op shop when he was about 20 to carry in his hiking backpack.

“I’d probably used it for a couple of years when I was flicking through and found the name and some details of the owner,” he said.

He was able, later on, to research the name, Pte R E Cooke, D Coy, 60 Infantry Battalion, on the internet and realised the dates coincided with the battle of Fromelles where Cooke had been wounded.

The Bible and its owner both survived Gallipoli and Fromelles.

A German helmet, nick-named ‘the coal scuttle’ by the allies, was souvenired by Yellingbo veteran Pte Fred Parslow of the 4th Division, Machine Gun Battalion, 1st AIF. With much of the film footage and photographs of the Western Front depicting shocking scenes in the trenches and knee-deep mud, a trench map and trenching tool resonate as an inanimate and powerful connection to the human experience.

They belonged to Lilydale soldier Pte Jim Baddeley of the 5th Infantry Battalion, 5th Division.

Mr Wilson said his collection is a mix of personal items with a known history, and others of which nothing is known.

“I had a lot of things given to me as a boy and teenager and if I can possibly find out the history of an item, I go to great lengths to return that history to the item,” he said.

“Otherwise, it is a generic item that represents part of the story of everyone.”

The Centenary of the 1916 Somme display is on throughout July at Healesville Library and will be followed by a display to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan in Vietnam.

YARRA Valley residents will have a chance to have their say on future management options for the Yarra River.

State Government Planning Minister Richard Wynne and Minister for Water Lisa Neville have called for comment on the Protecting the Yarra River (Birrarung) Discussion Paper which was released last week.

Mr Wynne said a plan was needed to protect the river.

“With the pressures of urban growth and climate change, we need to protect the river and the land around it and to have a clear plan for future development,” he said.

“There are more than 10 different organisations responsible for management of the Yarra River - we need clear management of the river and its corridor.”

The Yarra River Protection Ministerial Advisory Committee that prepared the discussion paper will provide advice to the Government by the end of this year on governance reforms regarding three key aspects

A spokesperson for the Minister of Planning said part of

Racing ban: no fallout THE banning of greyhound racing in other states will not affect the operation of Healesville or other Victorian greyhound racing clubs, according to Greyhound Racing Victoria CEO Alan Clayton.

The decision made by the NSW and ACT governments to ban greyhound racing in their states led to fears Victorian greyhound clubs would be flooded with owners, trainers and dogs from other states.

“Healesville Greyhound Racing Club, like the other 12 clubs in Victoria, will continue to operate as per usual,” Mr Clayton said.

The NSW State Government decided to ban the practice of greyhound racing after a Special Commission of Inquiry into the Greyhound Industry in NSW found 50-70 per cent of all greyhounds raised for racing are killed simply because they are too slow among other findings.

Mr Clayton said that greyhound racing practices in Victoria were not the same as in NSW and the future of the sport here was safe.

“Victoria’s circumstances are very different to NSW,” he said.

“There have been two major reviews of the sport conducted by Sal Perna, the Racing Integrity Commissioner and Dr Charles Milne, Chief Veterinary Officer, along with a review of the integrity of all racing codes by Paul Bittar.”

“Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV) is now implementing the 68 recommendations to ensure a sustainable future for the sport.”

Mr Clayton said the safety of the dogs associated with GRV had their welfare well looked after and supported.

“Unlike some other states, GRV has the financial capability to fund significant and fundamental changes for Victoria’s animal welfare and integrity arrangements,” he said.

Close-knit support for cystic fibrosis research

By KATH GANNAWAY CYSTIC fibrosis is the most common life-threatening genetic condition for children in Australia.

“It is more common than people think, and it’s a serious condition,” Kirsty Bowness told the more than 70 people who came together for the Yarn The Night Away fund-raiser in Healesville on Thursday 30 June.

Kirsty’s talk was a heart-rending and sobering moment in a night that was filled with colour, laughter, chatter, great food and wine and generosity.

The event, hosted by Crumbz Craft and held at Alchemy, raised $1001.80 for the Royal Children’s Hospital’s Cystic Fibrosis Research.

The Bowness family, Kirsty and husband Stephen and children Grace, 9, and Liam, 5, live with the condition every day, and it has shaped their ‘big picture’ approach to life.

Grace and Liam both have cystic fibrosis.

Keeping life as normal as possible in the midst of the challenges of keeping the children as well as possible with current medical treatments, is accompanied by a determination to fund vital and underfunded research.

“In the time since Grace and Liam were born, we’ve seen changes in their treatment that have been beneficial and those have come out of research,” Kirsty said.

“It’s a progressive condition, so it’s about keeping them as well as possible and research and treatment make all the difference.

“It’s also how we manage as a

“We can’t just sit back and say this is terrible, we have to do something.”

Three years ago, Kirsty started the Big Roast, and two big community roasts in Toolangi later this month are part of the 2016 program.

In one of those funny/sad moments that you get with kids, the idea for the Big Roast came in the

early days of Grace’s diagnosis when she referred to cystic fibrosis as ’65 Roasters’.

Touched by that first innocent acknowledgement of her illness, Kirsty and Stephen hoped to give Grace her ’65 Roasters’ by inspiring at least 65 people to hold a Big Roast awareness and fund-raiser.

The idea took off and has led to other events, including Yarn The Night Away.

Again, the Crumbz connection came through Grace who started knitting classes with owner Kay Trembath about a year ago.

When Kirsty approached Kay for support for the Big Roast, she said neither of them knew how they could make the link.

Kay embraces the cause and created her own fund-raiser with the help of Alchemy cafe and other local businesses who pitched in with a pool of raffle prizes.

Kirsty said the generosity of people continued to astound Stephen and herself.

“You are always going to get the support of family and friends, but we continue to be blown away by people who don’t even know Liam and Grace,” she said.

“People have been so generous donating money, time and energy, and we find it extraordinary.”

To support research through the Royal Children’s Hospital’s Cystic Fibrosis Research Trust, Kirsty is encouraging people to take a break from the kitchen, rug up and book into Toolangi’s Big Roast events at The Singing Gardens on Saturday 23 July and at Toolangi Tavern on Wednesday 27 July.

POLICE are asking the public around Lilydale to keep an eye out for a man who allegedly sexually assaulted a 50-year-old woman in January this year.

The Lilydale woman was approached by the man on North Road on Wednesday 27 January while he was collecting hard rubbish.

After engaging in a conversation, the man then forced the woman into a grey 4WD and drove a short distance before sexually assaulting her.

The man was wearing dark overalls at the time of the assault and spoke in broken English with a European accent.

The offender is believed to be about 175cm tall, between 50 and 60 years of age, of Southern European appearance with olive complexion, dark and grey hair and a short beard.

Police have released a computer composite image of what they believe the man looks like.

Police are urging anyone who has seen anyone suspicious in the area to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.

How outrageously Cr Jim Child has acted in voting in favour of a 42-metre communication tower to be erected in the middle of our sporting complex at Yarra Junction.

This tower will loom above the oval, tennis courts, bowling green and gymnasium, in the middle of the River Walk. Why has he abandoned the hundreds of people protesting and who voted in favour of this?

It will spoil the visual aesthetics and threaten the health of the young and old who use these facilities. There are other sites for this monstrosity. Why is the shire so willing to sell off our beautiful community parkland?

IT SEEMS that many residents may have missed the advertising

by Eastern Health of a proposal to rename the Healesville Hospital, following the redevelopment.

An advertisement appeared in the Mail on 28 June headed “Renaming the site” and calling for input into words and principles and how they could be used to rename the site.

The following week, 5 July, almost the same advertisement appeared with a slightly different heading “Options for renaming the site” and the input, as to how the words “could be used when considering renaming the site”.

The closing date for submissions was 10 July. More information and the online survey can be accessed at www.easternhealth. org.au

This seems an unnecessarily short consultation period for what could be considered an important potential change for the name of our hospital facility, especially seeing that the renovations will not be completed until next year.

Far from us to suggest there is anything sinister in the change of wording here, however Eastern Health’s record on “consultation” with the community and their staff, has left something to be desired in the past.

If you would like to convey your thoughts as to whether there is in fact any need to change the name and if so, perhaps to something that maintains the connection to Healesville and the Valley.

“They (Leader) didn’t have the people on the ground,” he explained.

“We have people who are not only dedicated to the community, but actively involved in it.

“We live and breathe our area and we’re not a multi-national. We don’t have someone on the other side of the world pulling the strings.”

Star is a family owned independent media company and Mr Thomas is the fourth generation of his family to run the company.

By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS AFTER one of the longest campaign and election periods in Australian history, this past weekend saw the Labor Party leader Bill Shorten concede defeat to the Coalition.

The division of Casey also looks to deliver a Liberal win with a margin between the two major parties of just under 10,000 votes as of Monday 11 July.

The vote counting in Casey is still officially underway and the final results won’t be known for some time but Labor candidate Hovig Melkonian said the result so far has been positive. “I think overall we’ve got a swing to Labor in the electorate and nationwide,� he said. “It is credit to things Labor were talking about in the campaign such as Medicare, Gonski funding and all these things resonated with the community and, as a result, we had a swing to Labor.�

Mr Melkonian also said that despite the ever increasing possibility of Labor being defeated in Casey, this election has not dampened his political enthusiasm. “This has definitely not put an end to my political aspirations, we’ll be back,� he said. “Tony Smith has promised a lot over next three years and I’ll he holding him

to account that those promises are delivered in full and in a timely manner.�

With a current 3.4 per cent swing away from the Coalition, Mr Melkonian said the focus of the Labor campaign led to a move away from coalition candidates across the country. “The people have rejected the shallow message of jobs and growth while Labor’s message for Medicare and school funding, real reform for negative gearing and hard questions like multinationals paying their fair share of tax resonated with the community,� he said.

Mr Melkonian said he is grateful for the support he received from his supporters during the election campaign and in the lead up to election day. “Locally we ran a huge campaign and the swing towards us is a positive result,� he said. “I give full credit to all the volunteers and the immense support we received from the community. “I’m very grateful for this and I’m humbled by all the people who put trust in me and the support I received, I am both humbled and grateful.�

Liberal MP Tony Smith declined the opportunity to comment until after the results for Casey have been made official.

YARRA Ranges Council voted to unanimously to adopt its 2016-17 budget at a regular council meeting on Tuesday 28 June.

It will see rates rise by 2.5 per cent in 2016-17, the limit set by the State Government’s rate cap.

The budget details $38.4 million in new capital works and infrastructure over the new financial year in addition to its $178m operating budget.

At the meeting, councillor Andrew Witlox said the 201617 council budget contained cost saving measures that all councillors could all be proud of. “I’m very pleased with this budget,� he said. “We have a $163 million reduction in rate revenue which means $163 million are to stay in the pockets of rate payers. “The numbers for capital expenditure for this period have increased, we were going to spend $341 million but now its $409 million. “We are spending more on projects and taking less from rate payers at same time.�

Yarra Ranges Mayor Jason Callanan said this budget and long-term financial plan will allow the council to achieve financial goals that will assist everyone in the Yarra Ranges Shire. “With this budget, council plan and long-term financial plan, we will be on track to achieve savings despite declining revenue streams, while delivering the same high level of capital works,�

Ink is in Danny’s blood

AFTER 40 years of putting ink to paper, Danny Zemp’s advice to young cartoonists is simple - “Head down, bum up, follow your passion.”

Mr Zemp, a Healesville resident and the Mail’s resident cartoonist, said the key to developing a skill like drawing was routine and practice.

“I think if you just draw when you have to, you become detached,” he said.

“But, if you’re working towards a deadline and set yourself a goal - like,

by Wednesday you want to send out a cartoon to the Mail ... hopefully it works.

“You’ve got to get into a routine, into a habit of doing it.”

He said that he started “when I was a wee little lad”, and that his inspiration largely came from French cartoonists and from reading Asterix and The Adventures of Tintin as a child.

“My dad’s still cross about me, because I inked ... his original Asterix cartoons,” Mr Zemp said.

“It was just funny, and I just filled it in, and that’s how you start - you start copying someone else’s style until it becomes your own.”

Mr Zemp’s style of political cartoons is no-nonsense. Covering topics from illegal rubbish dumping, to policing motorcyclists, and political mudfights, his works are often simple and cut through the spin to show a different perspective on an issue.

After the news of the Yarra Ranges Council endorsing a $28 million rebuild for their Lilydale offices earlier this year, Mr Zemp’s cartoon featured a man sleeping on a park bench, covered only by the Mail with “Shire’s

“As a political cartoonist, you always see the cynical side of it, and you have to be critical about what’s there, what’s out there - and sometimes, it’s

holding a mirror up to the people,” he said.

“I’m not a politically active person, but I like to sit on the fence and see how things unfold, and that’s where

“I don’t have a swing left or right I’m fairly neutral, but I like to see how they beat each other up, metaphorically speaking.”

Working as an arborist during the day, Mr Zemp said his goal as a cartoonist was to earn a steady living from selling his art.

He said that, while he still completed many of his works with paper and ink, he now utilised tablets and a desktop computer for much of his work.

“I was fairly traditionalist ... (but) you’ve got to be able to move with the times as well,” he said.

“From a collector’s point of view, it’s sacrilege in a way, because if you do that stuff digitally, how do you hang an original on the wall?

“There’s so many avenues you can do - there’s no such thing as saying ‘You have to do it that way’, or 'Learn to do it by hand first, then work on the computer’.”

He said an editorial cartoon should be about a current news event or accompanying an article, and should sum up the story in one image.

“If you do a political cartoon, it’s a one-day fly - it’s accurate today, it’s non-existent tomorrow,” Mr Zemp said.

“It should be closely working with the editor - sometimes, the editor goes ‘I have a feeling about this, but in words I can’t quite put it together - can you put something together?’

“It might be challenging and you can’t get it right, but it’s not the point about getting it right all the time - it’s about making a statement and see what your thought process of it is, what you feel about it.”

Well, here it is!

If you’re in this happy snap, or have had a connection with the club over the past 40 years, the present day pony clubbers want to catch up.

The Healesville Pony Club 40th Reunion Committee is planning a celebration in true pony club style with a ho-down at the Healesville Football Club Grounds on Saturday 16 July.

The club started at the Healesville Racecourse, and after a short while moved to River Street, adjacent to the Bowling Club before moving to the current location at the Don Road Sporting Complex.

“Although we have always been a small club in terms of size, we have always been big on fun and

friendship,” committee member Sally Clinton said.

Ms Clinton said that throughout the years many friendships had been forged between pony clubbers which only fellow horse lovers and their families would understand.

“The 40th Reunion will be a party for young and old to share stories and celebrate our club’s colourful history,” she said.

The club is inviting all past members and their friends and family to share in the celebration.

Local band, The Humbuckin Pick Ups, will provide the entertainment and there will be finger food provided with drinks at bar prices.

Council looks for the next big things on agenda YARRA Ranges Council is calling on residents who can see the big picture to share their long-term vision of the region.

The council is encouraging the community to take part in the extensive Yarra Ranges - The Big Picture community consultation process that will capture feedback and ideas about projects that are considered to be key to the future of the region.

Feedback received will contribute to the development of a new council plan while also playing an important role in guiding the new council that will be formed following the upcoming council elections in October.

Yarra Ranges Mayor Jason Callanan said the Big Picture consultation would build on feedback already received through a recent council survey which asked residents why they chose to live, work or play in the Yarra Ranges.

“The survey identified a number of common themes including environment, healthy living, sense of community and other things that help make Yarra Ranges a great place to live, work or play,” Cr Callanan said.

“The next step is to identify projects we can explore in the future that will build on and protect the reasons why we love this region and ensure we can contin-

ue to enjoy being part of the Yarra Ranges community.”

Yarra Ranges - The Big Picture community engagement will be undertaken through a number of platforms, including an online survey at www.yarraranges.vic. gov.au, a paper-based survey and three community forums.

Cr Callanan said the community forums would provide an opportunity for residents to not only put up their ideas but to discuss them with other people in the community, helping achieve general consensus as to what matters most for the community as a whole.

IT HAS been a cold start to winter, but not so much a wet start according to the Mail’s rainfall recorders who say we’re below par on precipitation once again.

Warburton’s Keith Thomas recorded a below average rainfall of only 83mm against his average of 118.9mm. His six-month tally is 496mm, again below the average of 577.6mm.

Doug Armstrong from Hoddles Creek recorded 153mm over 21 days compared to 53mm in June 2015 with the January to June comparison being 587mm to 494mm. Doug’s longtime average for June is somewhere in between at 119mm.

In Healesville, Alma Mitchell recorded 96.8mm over 25 days compared with under half of that last year on 44.7mm over 17 days.

Mr Thomas said the result of the comparative dry was that Melbourne’s storage dams were slowly declining,holding 1,066,025 million litres, or 58.8 per cent of capacity.

Based on Dahl’s children’s novel, The BFG follows Sophie (Ruby Barnhill), a young orphan who is whisked away by the Big Friendly Giant (Mark Rylance), a kind-hearted runt among his man-eating brethren.

Steven Spielberg is an incredibly versatile filmmaker, and has family friendly tales

like this down to almost a science.

The BFG is a whimsical, deeply moving film about courage and unlikely friendship, and has beautiful imagery and just enough intrigue and danger to generate suspense (but not so much that it would frighten youngsters in the audience).

Barnhill is already an extremely charismatic actress, and she and Rylance play off each other beautifully.

The humour contains a lot of clever slapstick, and the film delves with surprising detail into the ecosystem of dreams, which the BFG harvests and

delivers to sleeping people.

My only qualm with The BFG is its CGI. While there can be a very reasonable trade-off between expressiveness and realism, and the giant’s expressions and mannerisms are remarkably emotive and fluid, the CGI still doesn’t look real alongside real, physical actors like Barnhill or Penelope Wilton (as the Queen).

The CGI for the orcs in Warcraft looked much better.

The BFG is a family film of unusual depth and genuine tenderness.

After this coming weekend, there will be two fighting for top spot as Wandin play Olinda Ferny Creek and Healesville take on Monbulk and should come away winners.

Woori Yallock and Upwey-Tecoma are vying for consolidation in the five and battle it out next week.

Division 2 has seen some major position changes after Saturday’s games.

Yarra Glen and Kinglake have given themselves a four-point break on the opposition sharing top spot.

Seville’s loss to Kinglake has dropped them to sixth and sitting on 28 points with Yea in fifth.

Alexandra jumped to third after their ugly win against Yarra Junction but have Gembrook-Cockatoo on the same points.

Belgrave got off to a really good start, kicking 5.2 to 3.3 in the first and probably had Upwey a bit shocked. Upwey kicked into gear and kicked 3.6 to 1.3 to take a slim lead of four points into the main break. Another change in the lead came in the third when Belgrave kicked 4.3 to 3.3 to get in front by six points. Upwey finally got their game going halfway through the last and ran all over Belgrave, kicking 7.2 to 2.2 to come away with a solid win. Upwey are now two games clear in fifth spot.

Kinglake showed why they are sitting in top spot on the ladder, running all over Seville in the last, kicking 8.2 to 3.1 in the last to secure a 27-point win.

Wayward kicking still plagued Alexandra in the third kicking another 2.6 to three straight. Yarra Junction could not peg back the lead, but did hold Alexandra goalless in the last.

Some goal kicking practice is definitely on the training agenda for this week.

Warburton golf results WEDNESDAY 6 July: No competition due to extremely inclement weather.

Saturday 9 July: Stableford: After another wet week, Saturday’s field were pleased to play under sunny skies, and on a course that had dried out very well.

Certainly, one player who appreciated the improved track was a legend of the club, Kevin

Kane. Kevin has been a member for 50-odd years and a regular winner over that time.

In recent years, he has had frequent back issues that has seen him almost give the game away!

To the pleasure of all at Warburton, K.K. has persevered and is back playing (in his words) reasonable golf; until yesterday, when he revisited his ‘glory

days’ by amassing a superb 42 points to blitz the field! Great to see K.K. His score was five better than the runner-up, in D. Haggard, who would have still been happy with 37 points.

The balls went down to 33.

The daily nearest the pins went to Allan Hubbard (on both the 3rd and 9th), Willo (5th), David Murch (12th) and to CHB on the 15th.

By JAMIE STRUDLEY YARRA Ranges Athletics athletes of all ages converged on a warm, sunny Sandown Park for the Victorian State Road Relay Championships.

The venue, widely known as a motor racing circuit, was instead used by Little Athletics Victoria and Athletics Victoria.

This annual event provided the club with the perfect opportunity to combine all athletes from Under 9s to 40-plus at one event, something that seldom happens in Victoria.

The club and members cer-

tainly made the most of it, entering 18 teams across the various age groups and divisions.

Fantastic performances from all athletes resulted in some outstanding results highlighted by wins to the Under 11s Girls and Women Division 3 teams.

Other team placings to Boys Under 15s, Women Under 20s, Women U16s, Men Division 3, Men Division 7 and Men Under 14.

Meanwhile, the remainder of the club enjoyed great conditions at Margaret Lewis Reserve.

Congratulations to club member Lateisha Willis for winning two gold medals at the Oceania Games, held in Fiji last week.

Lateisha was competing for Australia at the games where she won the 100m and 100m hurdles, setting a championship record in the 100m Hurdles.

Next week, the club is competing at Knox Open Day; the seniors compete in AV XCR16 Round 8 at Albert Park.

The club will be back at Morrison Reserve on Saturday 23 July.

Motoring Take care on black ice AS WE find ourselves in another cold winter, drivers are urged to be extra vigilant of black ice on the state’s roads, VicRoads has urged.

Black ice occurs in freezing temperatures when heavy dew, rain or pooled water forms over the road.

It can be extremely hazardous for drivers as it is invisible.

It can form on any road, particularly during severe frosts in low-lying areas.

“The cold winters we’re known for in Victoria means black ice is a serious problem, one which can have terrible consequences if drivers don’t use the roads carefully,” says VicRoads Director Vehicle and Road Use Policy, Robyn Seymour.

VicRoads advises drivers to check the conditions before starting your journey.

If conditions are icy, decide whether you really need to drive or if you could delay your trip.

If you do drive and think black ice might be present, slow down at least 40km/h.

Driving at a slow, safe speed means that you are more able to maintain control and should a crash occur, the outcomes would be less severe.

Ms Seymour emphasised that you may have little or no control over your vehicle if you drive on black ice, and that less is more if you find yourself in this situation.

“Until you clear the patch of ice, use the accelerator, brakes and steering as little as possible,” Ms Seymour said.

“If you need to do anything, make any movements gentle.

“Do not accelerate, apply the brakes hard or turn the steering wheel quickly.

Ms Seymour stresses that drivers can’t take the safety features of their cars or any warning systems for granted.

Simply the best seller TOYOTA’S Corolla retained its title as Australia’s best-selling car in the financial year ended 30 June, according to official sales figures.

Local buyers snapped up more than 40,800 Corolla hatches and sedans during the latest year, eclipsing the popular car’s nearest competitor by more than 1500 sales.

The strength of Corolla - which has also been Australia’s top seller in each of the past three years - helped Toyota lift its new-vehicle sales to more than 206,800 for the 12-month period.

This represents an increase of 1.35 per cent over the previous financial year and a leading margin for Toyota of more than 88,000 deliveries over its closest rival.

Toyota dealers closed out the latest financial year with 22,083 sales in June - a figure that is 2.7 per cent higher than June last year and 77.3 per cent before any other brand.

As a result, Toyota dealers increased their retail sales to 102,344 vehicles for the first half of 2016, compared with fewer than 61,000 sales for the second-placed company.

Toyota leads seven individual market segments so far this year with HiLux 4x4 and 4x2, Camry, LandCruiser Prado, LandCruiser 200 Series, HiAce van and HiAce bus.

In June, HiLux was Toyota’s best-selling vehicle with 4613 sales, followed by Corolla (4427) and Camry (3049), which was the clear leader among mid-size cars.

Executive director sales and marketing, Tony Cramb, said Toyota was strongly positioned to achieve market leadership for the 14th year in a row and the 20th year overall.

“Toyota is reaping the benefits of delivering even-better cars backed by the industry’s leading dealer network and strongly competitive offers,” Mr Cramb said.

“Across the industry, local buyers continue to show confidence with record sales in June and for the first half of the year - and even an eightweek election campaign has not dented buyer demand.”
