ARMED with a smart phone, one Casey neighbourhood is fighting street crime, and it’s working. ‘Telegram Messenger’ is the app of choice used by the Evans Road, Lynbrook community who use the online noticeboard to keep track of suspicious behaviour.

Sarmuhabat Singh, who recently performed a citizen’s arrest, is one of the users, and told The News: “Anyone who sees something suspicious in the area can alert everyone on the app.� “It keeps us aware and comes in handy to alert police of cars displaying false registration plates,� Mr Singh said.

More than 70 locals have signed up to be instantly notified by their neighbours and act as crime fighters themselves.

Recent figures revealed a rise in Casey’s criminal activity of more than 15 per cent on a per capita basis in the past year.

Much of such crime is attributed to youths committing car thefts, carjacking, street robberies and home invasions.

But Mr Singh said the youth he caught on Saturday 25 was “harmless�. “I caught him and held him- he didn’t fight back, he was begging me to let him go, he said he would pay me if I let him go,� Mr Singh said.

While out walking his dog on Saturday near Evans Road, Mr Singh and another neighbour noticed three boys about 14 years old, hovering behind houses with spray cans and what looked like petrol or oil, about 9pm.

Mr Singh later approached the trio in his car with his wife and chased them as they ran away.

Community News Don’t hibernate, Explore Casey this winter!

The City of Casey is currently seeking input from residents on dog and cat related issues that affect the community, to help inform Council’s new Domestic Animal Management Plan.

Council is currently developing a new plan which will guide the approach as to how Council will manage dogs and cats in the municipality over the next four years.

With more than 27,000 dogs and 7,500 cats registered in Casey, Council wants to hear from pet owners, non-pet owners and pet-related businesses on issues that affect them.

Council is inviting residents to have their say via survey, quick poll or sharing ideas in an online brainstorm forum by 22 July 2016. Those that complete the survey have the option to go into the draw to win a $200 Westfield voucher.

Dogs deemed healthy

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH CITY of Casey Mayor and animal activists have been left reeling over a court’s ruling into the housing and mistreatment of 33 dogs hidden at a Blind Bight farm.

An Oscar’s Law spokeswoman said the council’s case against dog owner Troy Scoble was “weak” and the ruling unjust, while City of Casey Mayor Sam Aziz called the outcome “disappointing”.

The 34-year-old owner of 33 American bulldogs and Staffordshire bull terriers, which were found in poor conditions in April, pleaded guilty to 52 of the 53 charges against him at the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 23 June.

The prosecution came after Mr Scoble had failed to comply with council notices.

Mr Scoble escaped conviction by Magistrate Pauline Spencer because he had no prior convictions and was of “good character”. But he was ordered to pay a donation to the court fund of $1000 and $1500 in Casey Council court costs within three months.

Mr Scoble was also ordered to reduce the number of dogs on his property to four, or obtain a permit for more dogs within 60 days.

The court ordered Casey Council access to the property after 60 days to ensure compliance with the order.

Casey Council and the RSPCA found 10 dogs were illegally tethered on leads less than three metres.

All the animals were found to be permanently chained, while some were housed in 44 gallon drums and unable to stand, turn around or lie comfortably.

When Ms Spencer asked Mr Scoble why he had so many

dogs he replied “I like dogs”.

Wearing skull clad jeans and using a shoe box to store his papers, Mr Scoble said he didn’t have a partner or wife and that the dogs keep him “out of trouble”.

Mr Scoble told the court that he did care about his dogs and that when he was arrested following a police raid on his property on Friday 15 April, he was released at 9am the next morning and returned home straight away to feed his dogs.

Mr Scoble said he wasn’t aware of the laws surrounding tethering lengths despite Casey Council investigating him in September 2013 and March 2014.

Mr Scoble told the court he has removed eight of the 33 dogs and plans on relocating to New South Wales.

After the hearing, the Oscar’s Law spokeswoman, who was present in court, said: “There was no justice done today, the dogs are still there.”

“It sounds like he’s moving to a puppy farm. Laws in New South Wales are much weaker than Victoria. He will get away with much more there,” she said.

Oscar’s Law representatives, who secretly installed cameras on the property and reported the mistreatment to the Casey Council, have labelled the conditions they found as “barbaric”.

After the court hearing the Oscar’s Law spokeswoman accused Casey Council of putting forward a weak case.

“This was absolutely a chance for the council to set a precedent,” she said.

Cr Aziz said council was also “disappointed” with the outcome.

“This case has been under intense public scrutiny and council has done everything it can within the law to ensure justice was served,” Cr Aziz said.

“Unfortunately, the penalty does not reflect the quantity and seriousness of the breaches, nor does it reflect the sentiment of the community.

Four days after his court appearance, Mr Scoble’s dogs remain on his property, but with no health concerns.

A statement from the RSPCA said eight police members, four RSPCA inspectors and two veterinarians checked on the welfare of 34 dogs on Monday 27 June as part of a joint operation.

But no dogs were seized in the operation.

All the dogs were found to be tethered in accordance with the code of practice.

Magician no match for mayor’s powers

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS IN THIS austere rates-capping era, perhaps it takes some magic feat for Casey council to deliver a sound budget.

Never fear, Riley Baird of Narre Warren South was on hand - with magician’s cape, wand and basket - to conjure some suggestions at a special council meeting on 28 July.

Mr Baird, with several other residents, were there to give five-minute presentations to councillors and council officers about the draft 2016-17 budget.

With some pizzazz, Mr Baird planned to ask the audience and councillors to vote on his suggestions as he pulled them out of the basket.

There were plenty of tough savings measures such as scrapping the artist-in-residence at Berwick’s Old Cheese Factory, $140,000 electronic scoreboards, and the annual replacement of flags and banners.

Also under the knife was the $800,000 playground renewal program - a maintenance regime that could be partially redirected to building new playgrounds, Mr Baird said.

He agreed with another submitter Free Software Melbourne which estimated $1.2 million in savings if the council administration switched to open-source software.

Failed bid to steal cars A HOME invasion went wrong in Pearcedale after the occupant disturbed the intruders who were about to steal their two cars.

The aggravated burglary took a turn in the home owner's favour about 12.10am on Friday 24 June.

The burglars gained access to the Evans Street property through an unlocked door and stole two sets of car keys.

They made it inside both cars before they were disturbed and decided to flee the scene in their own car.

Police do not have a description of the car they escaped in.

SHOTS were fired after an altercation occurred in Cranbourne during the sale of a car.

Police conducted a door knock after the firearms incident in Rouse Street about 2.45am on Sunday 26 June, and many locals reported hearing gun shots at least three times.

Two parties were involved in the sale of the car. After the altercation, one party walked away and reported hearing gun shots, while taking refuge in nearby Monahans Road.

No one was injured in the incident.

Stars in the making IN its eighth year the spotlight beamed down on Casey’s up-and-coming stars for the Cancer Council.

Rap, musical theatre, pop, and instrumental artists took centre stage on Sunday 26 June ahead of the ‘Star Search for a Cause’ grand final.

Judges put through 14 competitors for the grand final to be held at Westfield Fountain Gate on July 24.

With a crowd of around 280 people, event organiser Casey councillor Louise Berkelmans said more than $4000 was raised on the night, contributing to a grand total of $20,000 raised to support cancer research over the past eight years.

“We had four age sections from under 10 year olds to 30 and above - our youngest performer was seven years old and she has gone through to the grand final,” Cr Berkelmans said.

The audience watched 26 performers belt it out on the Arthur Wren Hall stage and Cr Berklemans said lowering the age range for competitors was a success.

Watchdog sits out

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS THE local government inspectorate has ruled out investigating Casey council over a special-charges scandal which has been condemned by the Victorian Ombudsman.

Casey council’s special charge scheme against 37 Narre Warren South residents to seal Market Lane was labelled “unjust” and appeared in-part illegal in a Victorian Ombudsman report released on 22 June.

Of particular concern to the Ombudsman was the council’s decision to increase the interest charge by several thousand dollars at a closed meeting in 2014, without giving residents an opportunity to object.

Casey Residents and Ratepayers Association spokesman Brendan Browne backed the State Government’s appointment of an external monitor to oversee Casey council for up to three months as a result of the Ombudsman’s report.

“The ratepayers of Market

Lane who were unfairly affected have been treated appallingly,” Mr Browne said.

“Councillors and the CEO should have known how grossly unfair their actions were. Perhaps that is why they regularly hide their decisions in secret meetings.”

The council ranks highest in Victoria for decisions made in closed meetings (37 per cent) in 2014/15.

The figure was triple the state-wide average.

The Ombudsman’s report found the council had appeared to have acted illegally twice under the Local Government Act by failing to give notice to residents of their right to object and by holding a closed meeting to decide on a new interest rate on the scheme.

Mr Tyler had conceded in evidence to the Ombudsman that it was “in retrospect ... an error” to hold the decision in closed council.

Casey mayor Sam Aziz had labelled the monitor’s appointment as “over the top” and a “political move”.

Casey Council is set to consider those recommendations at a meeting on 5 July.

THIS is just an inquiry to your Berwick News newspaper dated 16 June 2016.

I received this newspaper for free into my letterbox where I freely allow my children to collect it.

This is a good time to teach my older children about the government while we are coming up to an election and your newspaper gives me updated information about it.

But to my amazement I opened the front page to reveal your usual front page and see the title 'Sex and the City'.

Although very grateful that you would use a cover on this newspaper front page title, I am somehow wondering of your purpose for the article.

I did read it through but am unsure to the meaning of the article.

The woman in the article seems to healthy and is receiving an income by her choice of employment, nothing seems to be going badly for her - which is thankworthy. There also doesn't seem to be any official criticism against her personally or concerns for her welfare that are mentioned by the writer.

So I was wondering if the writer was just trying to encourage the community to recognise her job as a valid career choice?

Should we now advise the local secondary schools to provide courses/subjects in prostitution for the students' consideration when choosing a career?

Has the writer considered the high risks involved in this sort of employment? Or should the community just consider the "family" atmosphere of what a brothel could offer a young female according to the comments made by this woman being interviewed?

Also the comments made about condoms being her protection - I was medically advised that condoms are not 100 per cent safe against pregnancy or STDs? So has the writer considered this woman's health information medically correct?

Has the writer investigated the high risk of violence and crime associated with prostitution?

Who were the readers you were trying to encourage to put more thought into this?

I also have noticed a second part of this story in the following week's Berwick News.

Its really is concerning to the promotion and glamorisation of this employment - that a woman can make large amounts of money and increase their self-confidence. This second woman also is convinced she is doing the disabled a favor in her job and that she has done some good in the world.

This second woman also is married with many paid sexual partners and the article quotes her saying that she uses a condom and doesn't get emotionally involved, so that makes it okay.

Witch hunt in fantasy land CASEY council has been caught out overcharging residents of Market Lane for a sealed road in Narre Warren South, and doing it behind closed doors.

The CEO has admitted this was wrong but not our mayor Sam Aziz who says it is a witch hunt by the State Government coming up to the council elections in October.

Our mayor is totally out of touch with reality and lives in fantasy land if he can not take responsibility for his shortcomings.

A new Domestic Animal Management Plan is currently under development, which will guide council’s animal management over the next four years.

City of Casey Mayor Sam Aziz said feedback was “vital” to the development of the plan.

“With more than 27,000 dogs and 7500 cats registered in Casey, council wants to hear from pet owners, nonpet owners and pet-related businesses on issues that affect them,” Cr Aziz said.

“Given Casey’s large population and continued growth, there is a need for a considered approach to domestic animal management issues. This takes into consideration the welfare of dogs and cats, protection of the community and environment from nuisance pets and the promotion of responsible pet ownership.”

THE Casey Council has ruled to euthanase an American staffy after the dog mauled a 11- yearold child’s face at a Cranbourne North reserve.

The decision came after the owner of the staffy, Mark Shelley, faced the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 23 June where he escaped conviction.

Magistrate Pauline Spencer placed Mr Shelley on a good behaviour bond and fined him $1486 in court, pound and administration costs, payable in a year.

The court heard the young girl approached the dog, called Sam, to pat it on 3 March and was bitten, causing serious fa-

cial injuries.

The 11-year-old girl was rushed to hospital and put on a liquid diet for two weeks after the mauling.

She was off school for three weeks.

Mr Shelley surrendered Sam to the City of Casey on 7 April and the court heard he had been co-operative and apologetic.

“I am very sorry for the event and my heart goes out to the poor girl and her family,” Mr Shelley said in court.

He said his dog Sam was very well disciplined and obedient, putting the attack down to the way the girl leant towards Sam. “That can be seen as an act of aggression by the dog,” Mr

Shelley said, before asking about the fate of the dog.

Ms Spencer said Mr Shelley had been co-operative and was a person of good character.

“It’s such a serious injury and that does make it a serious matter, but I note the dog and yourself have otherwise not been in trouble before,” she said.

“The dog was surrendered and you co-operated from the get-go and are very remorseful and you are prepared to pay costs and that is going to have a big impact on you, given you are not earning an income at the moment.”

Mr Shelley told the court he was living with his family until he got a job.

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH ACCORDING to Australian Greens candidate for Flinders Willisa Hogarth, there’s a wave of swinging voters turning Green.

The 34-year-old mother of three from Pakenham and Greens State Convenor said voters from the safe Liberal seat of Flinders were swinging left, many for the first time.

Liberal MP Greg Hunt has held the seat since 2001.

The margin of 11.8 per cent between the ALP and the Coalition at the 2013 poll is set to tighten if Ms Hogarth’s local feedback is anything to go by.

“The past fortnight I’ve received about 10 calls a week from Flinders residents telling me they’re voting Greens for the first time,” Ms Hogarth said.

She said that the calls have been from residents 65 and over, which make up a large percentage of the Flinders demographic.

“After the first couple of phone calls before pre poll started, I thought that’s interesting,” she said.

“I’ve had about 30 now and they ask how to vote Greens and how the vote cards work - it was unexpected but fantastic.”

Ms Hogarth said the crux of the swinging voters’ phone calls was about the Coalition’s refugee policy - “people aren’t afraid of refugees”, she said.

“They’re saying they are voting Greens for the first time because of our refugee policy, they don’t want to see offshore detention anymore, they don’t think it’s working - they don’t think secrecy on the issue from the Government is OK.” A passionate campaigner for the rights of refugees, Ms Hogarth said she is pretty excited about the reason for such a swing in Flinders.

Ms Hogarth said skilled refugees could help to revitalise areas of Flinders, saying “Shepparton is an example of that”.

The Pakenham mum also said other game changers for Flinders voters have been housing affordability and access to emergency healthcare.

Ms Hogarth said in just four days 1500 people voted pre poll in Hastings and said that she is looking forward to an interesting result on 2 July.

HOLT Labor MP Anthony Byrne has defended the use of a photo of him standing in front of a backdrop with Victorian and federal police logos in an election pamphlet.

The authorised pamphlet, which trumpets Mr Byrne’s work as deputy chair of the Federal Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security, was “not party political”, a spokesman for Mr Byrne said.

“We have checked the flyer with local police beforehand and they strongly supported this pamphlet.

“The flyer was not party political (no Labor logo) and was aimed at highlighting Anthony’s plan to keep our community safe, which is the main concern facing the local community.

“The feedback our office has received has been overwhelmingly favourable, as one person stated ‘at least our local politician knows what is going on’.”

The photo had been taken during Prime Minister Tony Abbott’s visit to the Endeavour Hills police station with Anthony Byrne at a media event in 2015.

Victoria Police stated it would write a letter in response “highlighting its desire to remain politically impartial”.

“Where we believe political material identifying Victoria Police creates a perception of endorsement. We will take appropriate action.”

An Australian Federal Police spokesman stated that the AFP doesn’t support unauthorised use of its logo but “it is clear that in this instance the use of this image is incidental”.

FEDERAL Holt Liberal candidate James Mathias has pledged $276,000 for road upgrades if the Turnbull government is re-elected.

Under the package, $226,000 will be allocated towards a single-lane roundabout and street lighting at the Childers and Russell streets intersection in Cranbourne.

Mr Mathias also promised $50,000 for flashing ‘Give Way to Pedestrian’ signs at the corner of Power Road and Box Street, Doveton. He said the funding was being directed toward roads and intersections that had been identified as dangerous.

CASEY artists of all kinds could be the next Lindsay King Arts Award recipient.

Nominations are open for this year’s award which aims to recognise those who contribute to developing and supporting the arts in Casey.

City of Casey mayor Sam Aziz said the award was Casey’s most “prestigious individual honour” for the arts and encouraged people to get nominating.

“Established in 2007, this award was introduced to recognise people whose initiatives have made a significant contribution to the arts in Casey,” Cr Aziz said.

“The award was named after Cranbourne resident Lindsay King who made a substantial contribution to the arts in Casey through his passion for local history, tourism, arts and culture.”

Shed support

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A FULLY-fledged Men’s Shed in Hampton Park has come a step closer to reality after Casey Council accepted the donation of a to-be-relocated 94-year-old school building.

The Men’s Shed is set to be housed in Hampton Park Primary School’s original circa-1922 building which will move into Marjorie Eastick Reserve.

At the 21 June council meeting, councillor Wayne Smith said “the school has no choice but to demolish it” as part of its $5.7 million upgrade if the council didn’t accept the regifted building.

‘We’ve got an opportunity to keep ... one of the oldest buildings in Casey.”

The Department of Education and Training had promised to fund the cost of relocating the building, but the gift still comes with costs of up to $250,000 to the council.

Some of the upfront costs included disability upgrades and increased car parking in the reserve.

Cr Smith said State and Federal grants may be available.

If necessary, he and fellow River Gum Ward councillor Damien Rosario were prepared to fund it entirely out of their ward funds, Cr Smith said.

Cr Smith said it gave a badly-needed home for the Men’s Shed group, currently in an impractical and “embarrassing” space in a community centre.

The council ought to advocate for the State Government to retain the state asset, the report stated.

He said he was sure the project would get funding support from State and Federal governments.

The council will seek a meeting with Eastern Metropolitan Region MP Judith Couacaud Graley, Federal Holt MP Anthony Byrne and the Hampton Park Men's Shed on the building’s future.

The July winter festival, The Big Freeze, will kick off on Saturday 2 July and host a myriad of school holiday fun for families.

There will be a snow pit, snowball toss, winter inflatable slide, snow village and forest, workshops, craft and construction play available from July 2 to 10.

A better way to get jobs done

RESIDENTS in Cranbourne are being encouraged to lend a helping hand to our native birds this winter - through the Backyard Buddies program run by Australia’s Foundation for National Parks and Wildlife.

The free initiative ensures participants receive an email each month with tips on how to make the backyard inviting and safe for native animals.

Winter is a testing period for birds such as honeyeaters that rely on flower nectar for food, which is harder to access through the colder months.

Look out for species such as this eastern spinebill in the backyard. and Wildlife, encouraged locals to consider how they could make their backyards friendly for honeyeaters and other native birds.

“With the effects of climate change already being felt in the delayed seasons and severe

weather conditions we’re experiencing, it’s more important than ever to help out our native animals where we can. For our honeyeaters, the best thing to do is be mindful when adding plants to your garden,” Mr Darbyshire said.

And Mr Darbyshire said honeyeaters will repay the favour by helping protect and sustain backyards.

“Most Aussie honeyeaters help your plants reproduce, by carrying pollen from flower to flower as they look for nectar.

“Another benefit is that they’ll also eat plenty of insects they find in your garden and keep your bug numbers down,” Mr Darbyshire said.

BY JARROD McALEESE STUDENTS participating in Cranbourne West Primary School’s Human Powered Vehicle (HPV) program have been given a boost ahead of this year’s RACV Energy Breakthrough Challenge, with the Wolfdene Foundation sponsoring the team by donating a new vehicle and team uniforms.

HPVs are recumbent trikes and they have risen in popularity in primary and secondary schools, with the 17-20 November RACV competition expected to attract more than 350 racing teams.

The Wolfdene Foundation aims to support the physical and emotional wellbeing of young people in the community and general manager Eivion Bowen

said Cranbourne West’s HPV program was one the foundation was happy to assist.

“The program provides so much upside and strengthens a range of attributes such as fitness, teamwork, decision making and persistence,” Mr Bowen said.

Cranbourne West teacher and member of the school’s HPV program Brad Campbell said the support of the Wolfdene Foundation was greatly appreciated and would allow the school to continue to offer an engaging program for students.

“We’ve been running the HPV program for a number of years and long had faith in what it provides students both on the track and in the classroom.

“Many kids develop enhanced enthusiasm for learning

through their involvement in the program and the provision of a new HPV will give everyone a massive boost,” Mr Campbell said.

And Campbell said the new vehicle will give students the opportunity to be more competitive at the end-of-year showcase after their hard work throughout the year preparing.

“Our current HPV has been well-loved but it’s tired, pretty dilapidated and not overly quick. The upgraded model is a significant improvement and will allow our students to compete on a level playing field and really challenge themselves in how fast they can get it to go. We’re really grateful for the support provided by the Wolfdene Foundation,” Mr Campbell said.

THE Casey/Cardinia Branch of the Housing Industry Association (HIA) has donated $2000 to Beyondblue as part of a fundraising campaign.

The group organised and ran a golf day where various local businesses sponsored the event and all money was donated to Beyondblue.

Simon Dunstan of SJD Homes based in Officer said that the HIA was a great way for building and construction professionals to stay in touch with the industry.

“We were looking for a way to give back to our community and give local builders more information in the process,” he said.

“The golf day was a great opportunity to tell people at a grass roots level what was happening in the industry while raising money and giving back.”

Beyondblue is the official charitable foundation for the HIA due to the overrepresentation of depression in the construction and building workforce.

HIA Victorian president Rob Griek said the HIA does a lot to help out building and construction professionals beyond charitable donations.

“We really work hard to give information and help out local members to keep them aware of industry changes,” he said.

“Information nights are a great way for people to network, share ideas about the industry and stay informed about changes.”

Mr Dunstan said the Casey/Cardinia branch of the HIA was always looking for new members and that anyone interested can contact Amy Hall on 5944 4001 to find out about upcoming information sessions.

Where steaks are high A SERIOUS steak restaurant and bar has opened in the old Blitz nightclub site at the back of Zagames hotel on the corner of Greaves and Clyde roads in Berwick.

The steak-focussed menu at the 200-seat MPD Steak Kitchen was devised by former Vue Group executive chef Chris Bonello and is mainly sourced locally.

Recognised as Shannon Bennett’s ‘right-hand man’ at Vue Group (which has seven venues including Vue de monde, Bistro Vue, Café Vue), Bonello worked alongside former Attica restaurant manager and head sommelier Banjo Harris Plane, who consulted with MPD on building the 250-strong wine list.

Bonello’s menu at MPD is steak focused - the name a nod to the Meatpacking District in New York City offering a selection of regular, to the more unusual cuts of beef, like Pope’s Eye which is part of the rump and full of flavour.

He sourced a majority of the beef locally from suppliers like O’Connor Beef and Vic’s Premium Quality Meat and also brought in the big guns like David Blackmore Wagyu and Cape Grim to complement.

Lamb (Flinders Island), fish, poultry and pork lovers will also be satisfied, with shared entrees and sides rounding out the offering.

The wine list favours local Victorian and Australian wines, plus Argentinian, French, Italian and Spanish varietals.

The collection is stored in a glassencased climate controlled ‘floating’ wine cellar, raised three metres off the ground.

Bonello says the opportunity to run a kitchen outside the Melbourne CBD was an appealing one.

“It’s clear Berwick and the surrounding South East suburbs of Melbourne have a really solid, but relatively untapped customer base to date,” he said.

“It is rewarding to bring a slice of CBD standard dining to the area, in a role where I have been given total creative license over the menu. It’s what made this opportunity so appealing.

“Yes we take the steak offering seriously, but the menu is approachable it’s top quality food without too much fuss and fanfare,” he said.

The MPD build and design, costing in excess of $3 million, is a vision of owners Robert and Victor Zagame.

The brief for the two level space was to create a customer journey from start to finish, giving a sensory overload of touch, smell and sight.

It’s moody and eclectic.

After entering through the narrow hallway - a sensory experience which

feels like you’re walking through a grill - guests encounter the dining space, and note tones of charcoal, contrasting light and dark woods, offset by white and red neon, copper finishes, leather booths, cow hides, over 50 different light fittings, blue leather bar front, and quirky sculptures and wall features.

A chef’s table seating up to 10 people serves Bonello’s dishes on bespoke crockery by local ceramic artist and sculptor Andrei Davidoff.

Guests have a bird’s-eye view of the main restaurant floor from the second level mezzanine, which also doubles as a private dining area.

From the bar, MPD venue manager Marcus Fabian says guests can expect “an extensive selection of quality bourbon and scotch, plus a focus on local craft beers and ciders like Grand Ridge Brewery from Mirboo North, and O’Brien Gluten Free Pale Ale from Ballarat.

“The cocktail list is adventurous, incorporating liquid nitrogen on tap, something rarely seen in Melbourne,” Fabian says.

The opening of MPD last Wednesday is also significant for local employment in the area - 80 per cent of staff live within a 10 kilometre radius.

By JARROD POTTER IT IS an important part of every cricketer’s arsenal but the only thing you can’t buy in the stores.

For Daniel Van Hees, 15, from Cranbourne he had to learn the hard way that all the runs and wickets in the world can’t make up for a bad attitude.

It held him back; the onerous weight of his arrogance left him stagnant at the crease and unable to make his way up the pecking order.

But those days are behind him - thanks to a legion of cricketing mentors Jim King, Greg Keith and also Chris Reid - who have taken him under their wings.

The results are now speaking loudly for the Lynbrook turf cricketer as he’s made the Cricket Victoria under-17 team, set to go to Dubbo, New South Wales, this weekend for the national championships.

“I’ve tried out for about three years in a row and now I’ve gotten in this year - I haven’t gotten in every year but it’s good to make it for the first time,” Van Hees said.

“More of my attitude at first I didn’t get in because I was a little bit too arrogant, I guess, but now I’ve become a little bit more humble and more of a team player.

“Only over the past

year or so - probably over the outdoor season with Lynbrook - and it was because of all my mentors helping me.

“I’ve been getting more results throughout my games - more runs, more wickets - and we’re getting more runs on the board.

The batting all-rounder only got into indoor cricket for a muck around but has come to love the cricket variant and is making his way in both summer and winter cricket.

“First year I really only did it to muck around and play something in the offseason, but the last three years I’ve been playing Superleague and got a bit into it,” Van Hees said.

“We head off to Dubbo, New South Wales, for the tournament and I would love to win a championship with the team - don’t mind if I’m in the team or not, just want our team to win.

“Vic and Queensland are usually the two better teams but our team has won three years in a row and just hope to help carry that on.”

Van Hees wanted to thank his indoor team mates - Thien Huynh, Daniel Juricic, James McPhee, David Maddox, Emile Tait, Benn Zomer, Callan Gilboy, Hugo Ferdinand, Jay Jhamb - and coach Chris Reid for their support, along with his parents.

Wilkin’s will to win sees Cavaliers home

By JARROD POTTER BIG V - ROUND 13 CLINCHING top spot, Casey women stormed past Coburg to claim a 66-59 BIG V nail-biter.

Even with nothing going their way - getting out-shot on the back of 28 per cent shooting, outrebounded 45-57, making less field goals and having players in foul-trouble early - the eight-available Cavaliers managed to overcome the odds and savour the seven-point victory.

Former Cavalier Natalie Dowdy (nine rebounds), Lyndsey Hoogenhout (16 points, 11 rebounds) and Kendall King-Hawea (16 points, nine rebounds) made life tough for the Cavaliers under the ring.

It took a superhuman game from centre Tarryn Wilkin (26 points, 20 rebounds) to keep the Cavs alive.

With her usual defensive mainstay - skipper Ruchelle Mccracken (11 points, seven rebounds) - getting into foul trouble early, the burden was thrown on Wilkin’s shoulders, and she delivered.

The only time she sat was at the time-outs and breaks as she put in an immaculate 40-minute performance to drag the Cavaliers across the line.

Coburg threw everything at Casey down the stretch, but the visitors put an old hoodoo to rest with the victory at Coburg Basketball Stadium - the place of its 2012 BIG V grand final series defeat.

“Tarryn was just switched on from the start,” Casey coach Michael Davies said. “She was the one player who was there to play and she woke up saying she thought it would be a good day and had this great feeling from the start.

“To have Ru (Mccracken) playing beside her, she didn’t have that last year, but this year there’s Ru beside her that will take another big match-up off her and free her up a little bit.”

Davies praised the team-wide defensive performance - especially Cristin Daly’s role sticking alongside Rachel McKeown.

While the numbers beyond the final score line don’t make for great

reading, Davies said they were just part and parcel of a tough clash against a strong line-up.

“A lot of that is how Coburg plays as well - strong, physical team and have two or three ladies in particular that can nearly score at will,” Davies said. “They shoot a lot of shots and crash the boards hard, so our whole focus was to shut them down.

“Look at the stats and thought we didn’t win a single thing here, but took the win anyway - we lost the boards, turnovers and I don’t give a stuff,” Davies said. “It was just one of those games and I think confidence-wise for us, it was huge and it’s placing us into a great position - to be two games clear of them.

“I wouldn’t have expected to be where we are this year - expected to be in the top group, top four or five , but to have only two losses against the name this season, is a pretty amazing time.”

Casey’s men are licking their wounds after a 71-100 thrashing at the hands of high-flying Blackburn.

The Vikings unleashed their

greatest fury in the final term, knocking down 33 points to run up the margin and leave the Cavaliers shell-shocked.

Shooting at only 31 per cent, Casey was left in Blackburn’s wake as the ladder leaders flexed their might against the visitors on Sunday.

Matt Witherden (20 points, nine rebounds), Brent Hobba (14 points, nine rebounds) and Dean Johnson (16 points, 10 rebounds) did most of the heavy lifting in the key.

The Youth men were bested 8896 by Craigieburn, despite the best efforts of David Gormlie (17 points) and tall tandem Sam Pike (15 points, 11 rebounds) and Sam Pike (14 points, 10 rebounds).

In the return-leg of the age-old BIG V grudge match, Casey will host Keysborough on Saturday evening - starting with the women’s clash at 5.30pm before the men’s sides battle it out at the Fortress.

Cranny sends a message

By JARROD POTTER VFL WOMEN’S - ROUND 10 CRANBOURNE might not have taken the points on Sunday, but it certainly sent a strong message throughout the VFL in its 35-point loss to Diamond Creek.

Going toe to toe with the Creekers throughout a freezing-cold slog at Casey Fields, the Eagles made it their mission to hold off the Diamond Creek onslaught from the back.

Usual midfield tandem Hayley Wildes and Bianca Jakobsson toiled to keep the opponents off the scoreboard across half-back.

Kayla Ripari continued to make the most of her limited time in the Eagles’ jersey this season as she racked up the contested footy.

The Eagles interceptions followed the same formula as they looked to ride the boundary line to the pavilion side throughout the windswept first term.

Their strategy proved problematic though as Diamond Creek just held on and waited for the opportune moment to kick through the traffic.

A gutsy second term slashed the deficit to seven after booting goals through Wildes, Breann Moody and debutant Nicole Garner - making the switch for the week from Gippsland.

But when the match was in the balance, Cranbourne couldn’t find the finishing blow.

Diamond Creek snuck out the back door to rapidly turn the eight-point gap into a five-goal blow-out at the death.

“Considering how undermanned we were not an excuse but just a fact - to put on a performance like that to the pressure, the tackling, was

really pleasing,” Cranbourne coach Kris Smith said. “Kelly Thompson in second or third game and led the tackling for us - three or four rundown tackles and a couple on Steph Chiocci.

“We didn’t miss the mark by much on the weekend - even though it was 35 points, we weren’t far behind.

“We’re a three, three-and-a-half quarter team at the moment - it’s just if we can find that extra 15 minutes.

“Just starting to realise they belong at this level and if we’re good enough for long enough we’ll be able to get them.”

It’s back to square one for Cranbourne, taking on ladder leaders Darebin at home in the replay of the round one shellacking. This time around though Smith is convinced a four-quarter Cranbourne performance wouldn’t let such a result happen again.

“Got the acid test this week - Darebin at home,” Smith said.

“I’m looking forward to it - if we can play in that same style and headspace as we did this week, we can go pretty well.”

Ellie Keatch and Ash Fennell are set to return while and another Gippsland region debutant Power Youth Girls Academy player Shayla Marsh - is set to become an Eagle for the clash.

“Everything is looking good going forward - the morale around the club and the group is good,” Smith said.

“We’re in a good place as a club, just not getting the Ws.” The match starts at 2pm on Sunday at Casey Fields Oval 2.

UNDER-18 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS - ROUND 3 A FIGHTING final term against South Australia belied the problems with Vic Country’s nationals’ campaign this year.

The boys from the bush have not upheld their intensity for long enough and have left too much to get done in the final few moments after going cold for extended periods.

This trend continued on Friday afternoon at Etihad Stadium as the reigning champions stayed near the bottom of the Division 1 pool following their 9.11(65) to 11.10(76) loss.

Completely run over by the interstate rivals in the opening half, Vic Country had no answers to South Australia pounding the forward-50 and settling up a bruising six-goal-straight first term, on the back of amazing work from Ben Jarman (three goals) in particular.

Jack Graham, Jonty Scharenberg, Jake Pitman and Tyson Stengle blanketed the country boys and left the first half securely in South Australia’s favour.

Despite the barrage of entries, the one-two Berwick punch of Reece Piper and Oscar Clavarino on the last line gave the Croweaters plenty of concern as the Vic Country tandem held on strongly despite the visitors racking up a six-goal break at the half.

Vic Country came out of the sheds and returned to its better fashion of footy - grinding out every contest and sticking in the contests.

Keeping the South Australians goalless in the final term, Vic Country put on a clinic to make a match of it - spearing it in to Hugh McCluggage (three goals), Josh Battle (two goals) and Sam “Rat” Fowler.

A five-goal spree gave Vic Country hopes of revival, but in the end the mistakes of the first term cost the Vics dearly in the 11-point defeat.

Vic Country rounds out its difficult Under 18s campaign with its final clash of the carnival - battling the Allies at Simonds Stadium on Wednesday.

Beacy can sit back and enjoy

By DAVID NAGEL BEACONSFIELD finds itself in the enviable position of resting up and preparing for a red-hot crack at ladder-leader Narre Warren after banking its sixth win on the trot, 62-47, against Doveton on Saturday.

The second-placed Eagles are in a no-lose situation this week, having the bye and banking four premiership points while the other topthree incumbents, the Magpies and Tooradin, lock horns.

They’ll either join the Magpies on 40 points at the top, or extend their margin over the Seagulls.

Sit back and enjoy it coach Simon O’Shanassy - you and your girls deserve it.

“It’s half way through the season and we’re three games clear of third, we’re absolutely rapt to be in that position,” a delighted O’Shanassy said.

“I was cautious heading in against Doveton, they’ve got some quality players and we had some sore bodies after our game against Cranbourne last week. We had some flat patches, but overall I thought our intensity was pretty good.”

O’Shanassy is a proven master at developing young talent and this young Eagles’ list has a sustainable look about it. Gabby Stinear (GK), Courtney Davey (GS), Amanda McKenna (C) and Zoe Mason (WD) are all youngsters on the rise, while Kaela Hughes is entering her prime.

The Eagles opened up a six-goal lead at the first break, cut back to five by the Doves at half time, before extending back to eight at the final change.

The Eagles exploded in the final term, scoring 14 goals to seven to race away with a 15-goal victory.

The Doves really mixed and

matched on the weekend, finding their best combination in the second term when Breanne Miller (C), Aila Pera (WA) and Liz Edwards (GS) made their presence felt.

Doveton’s next opponent is Pakenham, who came out second best in a low-scoring contest against Cranbourne at Toomuc Reserve.

The 34-24 score-line gives it away; both team defences were on top with neither side gaining any significant momentum.

Gun defenders Sharni Lambden and Tara Cecil made life impossibly difficult for Pakenham’s goalers.

Youngsters Kyra Esler (GA) and Emma Jones (WA) gained some valuable court-time for the Lions.

Hampton Park came out firing against premiership favourites Narre Warren before the champs kicked into another gear, winning 49-45 at Robert Booth Reserve.

The Redbacks surprised the visitors with a 13-9 first quarter with Monalisa Groom (C) winning plenty of ball through the midcourt.

But the Magpies recovered with a brilliant 20-11 second quarter to take a five-goal lead at half time.

Kim Coulson and Karli Foster tried hard for the Redbacks but the steadying hands of Tracey Dell and Adele Clydesdale saw the Maggies home by four goals in the end.

Tooradin has bounced back to the winners list, breaking a drought that extends back to May 14, with a 43-33 victory over ROC at Westernport.

Alex Duff (GS) and Kelly Haynes (GA) were brilliant for the Gulls while Laura Quinn (GD) and Jaz Cross (C) dug their nails in for the Kangaroos in the second term.

Now Eagles have revenge in mind

By DAVID NAGEL FORGET housing affordability, immigration policies and the Medi-Scare campaign, this Saturday’s Federal Election day is all about Cranbourne hosting Berwick in the South East Football Netball League match of the day.

These two respect - but just don’t like - each other.

It stems all the way back to a nasty incident in the mid 2000s, but more recently the feeling has been built through hot competition - these two playing off in last year’s grand final.

Berwick succeeded that day, and repeated the dosage with a 31-point victory back in Round 5 this year.

And the Wickers didn’t just beat the Eagles on the scoreboard, they did it in a physical sense, which has been a hot topic of conversation at Casey Fields ever since. That’s Cranbourne’s brand of footy right there, their signature move - toughness and it was taken away that day.

Berwick skipper Madi Andrews floored Mat Fletcher in an action that is still to go before the tribunal, while Berwick’s hunt at the ball was much harder and tougher than the Eagles that day.

Cranbourne coach Simon Goosey said there was hell a lot to play for this weekend.

“These are the games you look forward to, the big games, and they’ll be some urgency on the track this week for sure,” Goosey said.

“Our group has a lot of pride and deep down we were very disappointed with our efforts the last time we played them. We weren’t hard enough with our tackling and our hunt at the ball, that’s the most important thing for us this weekend, our intensity at the contest.”

The Eagles warmed up for the Wickers with a comfortable

42-point victory over Pakenham, kicking 10 of 12 goals, from early in the second quarter to three-quarter time, to take complete control of the contest.

Luke Bee-Hugo kicked four, Marc Holt and Zak Roscoe three each, while the run and carry of Anthony Vella and Aaron Bower tore the Lions to shreds at times.

Pakenham’s Matt DeBruin provided the day’s highlight, kicking a goal-of-the-year contender after four bounces on the Toomuc Reserve member’s wing.

Beaconsfield has basically assured itself a place in this year’s finals series after a gutsy and determined 14-point victory over Doveton at Holm Park Reserve.

A stunning 12-minute burst from former Western Bulldog Daniel Giansiracusa, and the cleverness of Troy McDermott, gave the Eagles the edge in a game where scoring was difficult for both sides.

Giansiracusa and McDermott kicked four goals each to be the most influential players on the ground, leaving the fourth-placed Eagles a game and percentage clear of the Doves in fifth place.

Doveton’s plight was worsened with a serious hamstring injury to Jarrad Boumann likely to keep him out for the remainder of the season, while Ryan Hendy was also taken from the field with an ankle injury.

In other games, Darren Sheen kicked seven goals in Narre Warren’s 142-point massacre of Hampton Park, while Tooradin coach Lachie Gillespie played his first game since 2014 in the Seagulls’ 38-point win over Officer.

Gillespie may be the Seagulls lucky charm, with his side winning its first game since Round 2.

Dinger, 22, from Cranbourne, has packed his bags from Casey Fields Oval 2 and is set to travel all the way down to ... Casey Fields Oval 4 to start a second stint in Victorian Premier Cricket.

The up-and-coming off-spinner is set to join up with the Swans and believes he’s improved on and off the park since his first Premier run around with Dandenong.

“Been thinking about going there for a while - obviously I want to keep developing my cricket and what better time to go to District cricket at more of a mature age now than when I first went,” Dinger said.

“So I thought it was a perfect opportunity to go there and try and play District ones.

“When I was bowling mediums I just went back to my local club and developed a bit more as a cricketer.

“Was probably a little bit immature when I first went there, but I think now that I’ve gone back and played with the likes of Spolly (Steve Spoljaric), (Matt) Chasemore and Lewy (Brett Lewis) as a coach, I’ve learned a lot through them.

“I feel like I’m a lot bigger player than when I went there (Premier Cricket) the first time.”

Casey-South Melbourne moved

up the Premier cricket ladder last year, but struggled to contain the opposition in the middle overs.

That’s where Dinger thinks he can make a great impact - coming in as a potential first XI spinner - but he knows while the spot is open ... it’s not his for the taking without a lot of hard work.

“It pushes me I guess knowing that spot’s there - to train myself and put myself up for that spot,” Dinger said. “That spot could open up some other things, but it’s not going to come easy so I’ll have to work my arse off to get there.”

Dinger bows out of the Dandenong District Cricket Association (DDCA) after a man of the match performance in last season’s extraordinary Turf 1 grand final.

He snared 3/24, 6/44 and made a handy 10 not out at the end to help guide Cranbourne to a reverse-outright premiership victory - easily the rarest result in cricket history.

“Every day I still can’t believe it,” Dinger said about that now famous match. “The grand final was obviously unbelievable but it didn’t inflict on my decision to go to District cricket.

“But whether we won or lost on that day, or if I bowled well or poorly, it wouldn’t have changed my decision.”

Casey-South Melbourne finished 15th in Victorian Premier Cricket’s 2015/16 season with a 5-12 record.

Top players tell their tales

By RUSSELL BENNETT BASKETBALL diehards from right across Melbourne’s south-east were treated on Saturday afternoon to an hour with NBA royalty at the Dandenong Basketball Stadium.

As part of the NBA’s Basketball Without Borders program, the Dandenong stadium hosted Australia’s first ever satellite camp last week.

The program, which is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year, brings together the top male players born in 1999 from around the Asia Pacific region to learn from NBA and International Basketball Federation (FIBA) players, legends and coaches and to also compete against the best young players in the region. There was also a girls camp for the top female players in the state, as well as a junior NBA camp for local youngsters.

But on Saturday, hoop heads from Dandenong all the way out to Warragul, had their chance to listen to one of the greatest big men in the history of the NBA - David Robinson - and former championship-winning team mate with the San Antonio Spurs, Bruce Bowen, talk at an ‘NBA legends lunch’ about their time on the big stage.

People from throughout Cardinia and Casey sat on the edge of their seats as the two men spoke, and rightfully so.

Robinson, now 50 years old, is a former first overall NBA draft pick, Rookie of the Year, Most Valuable Player, a 10time All-Star, a two-time championship winner, and a two-time Olympic gold medallist. The 1992 Dream Team member and Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame inductee’s career achievements speak for themselves. He was also named to the NBA’s 50th anniversary all-time team.

Both he and Bowen (a three-time champion with the Spurs) spoke about their experiences going up against the greatest player of all-time, Michael Jordan, and what it was like to compete at the highest level of the sport.

“It was an honour and privilege to compete against so many great players in the NBA, but I want to thank everyone for welcoming us here to Australia because it’s truly an honour to be here.”

Bowen spoke about his strong Australian ties going back to his time in college at Cal State.

“I love the spirit of a lot of basketball players that I’ve come in contact with out here,” he said.

“There’s a toughness and a spirit about Australian players that won’t al-

low you to limit them in what they can do.

“If they’re on the floor, they deserve just as much respect as anyone else.”

Brooks Meek, the NBA’s vice president of international basketball, also spoke. One of the those responsible for taking Basketball Without Borders right around the world, he said the Dandenong stadium provided one of the best facilities the program had ever seen.

“I’d like to point out the timing of the event during a draft where an Australian went number one overall and another Aussie went in the top 10, and I don’t think it’s luck,” he said.

“Melbourne ranks number three in the world for number one overall draft picks behind only Chicago and New York.

“I think we now recognise the power of Australian basketball.”

WHILE premierships and league medals are always nice, the main aim for Narre North Foxes this year is simple - get in the position to start a Youth Girls team.

The Foxes recently celebrated their 20th birthday and want to make sure the next 20 years and beyond are even more inclusive and supportive of all footballers in the region.

Putting one or two Youth Girls teams in the black, grey and turquoise and joining the South East Juniors in 2017 is a big ambition, but Narre North has decided to give it a shot for a group of devoted junior girls on the verge of ‘ageing out’ of the boys competitions at the end of this year.

Foxes under-14s players Georgia Rundell, Theresa Cataldo, Taylah Saly and Shannen Herrech wanted to stay loyal and stick by the Foxes once they have to make the switch to the junior girls competition.

Faced with leaving Narre North to join another club, the girls made it clear they’re not going anywhere and want to bring Youth Girls footy to the Foxes ranks.

“It’s because it’s a good club and everybody is very supportive of us,” Cataldo said. “We can keep on playing here and continue with our footy career.”

The club - and especially it’s coterie of keen female footballers is keen to get both the senior aged Youth Girls and under-15 sides up and running in 2017 and will run a football clinic throughout the next month to generate some interest and see if the numbers stack up for forming the side.

“It means everything - we wanted this club to get involved,” Saly said.

The Foxes’ girls football clinic will be run for footballers aged from eight to 17 of all experience levels to give them a taste of footy ahead of launching the 2017 team.

The sessions will be held each Monday night starting on 11 July, with each clinic going from 5.30pm to 630pm at the Narre North Reserve.

Soft ride over hard ground

By ALISTAIR KENNEDY THE Grand Cherokee is the biggest and best-selling vehicle in the Jeep range, accounting for around half of total sales since the release of the current model in 2013.

Grand Cherokee now comes, for the first time, with a two-wheel drive (2WD) option.

It’s only available in a single variant - the entry-level petrol Laredo.

The latter also comes with 4WD as do all of the higher-specced variants Limited, Overland, Summit and SRT8.

Styling is less angular than other Jeeps and the big SUV has a neat and conservative look, characteristics that undoubtedly have attracted the new breed of Jeep buyers to it.

The higher-specced variants add progressively more chrome and get larger wheels (20-inch for those above Laredo which gets 18-inchers).

The new Platinum Summit variant, added to the range earlier this year, gets even more chrome while the SRT8 is stands out with its black front grille and rear tail light surrounds.

High-intensity discharge (HID) bixenon headlamps and LED daytime running lights (DRL) are standard across the Grand Cherokee range.

Surprisingly for a vehicle of its size, the Grand Cherokee can only seat five occupants - many of its competitors

There’s a real quality look and feel throughout the interior with plenty of room for five full-size adults to spread out travel comfortably over long distances.

There’s plenty of storage space for that type of journey, 782 litres with the rear seatbacks in place and 1554 litres with them folded.

The Laredo has climate-controlled

air; a customisable electronic instrument array; leather trimmed steering wheel; cloth seats, with the fronts being power adjustable and heated; and auto-dimming interior mirror.

Grand Cherokee Limited adds leather trim; memory functions for the front seats; heating to all seats as well as the steering wheel; and a powered tailgate.

Overland gets Nappa leather on the

seats; wood and leather trim on the steering wheel; a body coloured lower facia with chromed inserts; and a dual panoramic sunroof.

Three engines are offered. Laredo, Limited and Overland all get the choice between a 3.6-litre Chrysler Pentastar V6 petrol and an Italian-made 3.0-litre V6 common-rail turbo-diesel. Summit is diesel-only while the high-performance SRT 8 is powered by a 6.4-litre V8 petrol. More about the latter as we

There’s plenty of power and torque from all three engine. The V6 petrol generates 210 kW and 347 Nm (at 4300 rpm); the diesel 177 kW and 550 Nm (at 2000 rpm); with the V8 topping the range with 344 kW and 624 Nm (at 4100 rpm).

An eight-speed ZF automatic transmission is used on all Grand Cherokee models, with a medium-duty unit in the Laredo 2WD and heavier duty ones in the 4WDs. Paddle shifters are fitted to all models.

All Grand Cherokee 4WD models use the Jeep Selec-Terrain system that provides the choice of five different driving programs (Auto; Sand; Snow; Mud; and Rock ) for specific conditions.

The Quadra-Lift air suspension system operates automatically to adjust to required ride height conditions. It can also be adjusted manually by the driver and provides five height settings for optimum ride performance.

Standard in all Grand Cherokee models are seven airbags including protection for the driver’s knees; ABS brakes with brake assist; electronic stability program with electronic rollover mitigation (ERM); traction control; active high-beam control; daytime running lights; dusk sensing headlights; reversing camera; hill-holder; and tyre pressure monitoring.
