By MEGAN OGLE LOCAL architect and equal rights activist Robin Bristow can now add politician to his list of credentials, as he announces his candidature for federal government.

Under the banner of the Australian Sex Party, Mr Bristow will enter the election race for the coming double dissolution set to take place on Saturday 2 July.

“I am pleased to announce that I will be running for Queensland Senate for the Australian Sex Party in

the upcoming Federal Elections,” Mr Bristow said.

“Queensland voters are sick and tired of being lectured to when it comes to issues such as abortion rights, nude beaches, lockout laws and drug law reform.

“All of the major parties seem to be under the control of right-wing religious fanatics and we want to send a clear message to Canberra that this incestuous relationship must end.”

Mr Bristow, originally from South Africa, said his passion for politics grew after he migrated to Australia

in 2007 having experienced the end of apartheid in his homeland.

“When the smoke eventually cleared in South Africa, the end of apartheid presented a bright future for the country with the promise of Nelson Mandela leading the country towards reconciliation,” he said.

“It was an exciting time to live in South Africa – every day you woke up to change. Rapid change was the norm and the rest of the world seemed a boring place in comparison.

“It was with this world view that I arrived in Australia in 2007 for an adventure. Australia, and in particu-

lar Sydney, was an exciting place.

But I realised after a while that there was much to learn about the underbelly of Australian politics.”

Mr Bristow said former Prime Ministers and State Premiers had left him “disheartened” and he felt he could no longer stay silent.

“I looked around for a political home and the time I first read the policies of the Australian Sex Party I knew I need not look any further,” he said.

“It was the first time I had ever joined a political party – every policy resonated strongly with me. The

Australian Sex Party – even the name was radical and transgressive.

“The lack of marriage equality and the school chaplains’ program became some of my driving passions. One of my first political acts was to organise a protest in Noosa when Tony Abbott and Warren Truss came to have lunch at a local restaurant.

“Other political actions followed which have brought me to this point today where I have put up my hand to run as the Australian Sex Party’s Queensland Senate candidate in the 2016 election.”

Minister blocks a sunshine strip THE Minister for Police has said no to the nudies, rejecting the public push to turn Alexandria Bay into an official nude beach.

Despite two petitions with a total of over 1400 signatures, Police Minister Bill Byrne rejected the push for a clothing optional beach in Noosa, stating the Queensland Government “has no plans to change the current legislation dealing with wilful exposure”.

Mr Bryne said the “current legislation in relation to wilful exposure is designed to provide for the protection and safety of Queenslanders”.

Australian Sex Party representative and local equal rights advocate Robin Bristow slammed the announcement from Mr Byrne.

“Our state is 40 years behind the rest of Australia in legalising nude beaches,” Mr Bristow said.

“We are the last state in Australia to make this simple change to legislation. How can we call ourselves the Smart State if our politicians can’t even move into the 21st Century?“ Mr Bristow said Mr Byrne’s comments about the

laws being designed to provide protection was a “pathetic argument”.

“What are the people in Queensland being protected from? It is their choice to be on a nude beach and making such a claim is complete rubbish when we see that the rest of Australia has the freedom to visit the many clothing optional beaches up and down the coast,” Mr Bristow said.

“Queensland is making criminals out of decent folk who are making adult decisions about their lifestyle, decisions that do not affect anyone else. We are tired of being seen as the backward state and we need the Queensland Government to show that we have moved on from the Joh Bjelke-Petersen era”.

Member for Noosa Glen Elmes has lent his support to Mr Byrne’s stance on nude beaches, stating “there are a myriad of other factors such as environmental and social impacts” which need to be considered.

“A-Bay has been an unofficial nude beach for as long as I can remember and has been quietly accepted by the community because it is remote and easily avoided,”

Mr Elmes said.

“Lobbyists for A-Bay to be made an official nudist beach purported in recent times that such a move would attract an additional 100,000 bathers to the beach each year.

“If the population were to expand in this way, additional services would be required to support such growth, including the need for surf lifesavers, toilet and shower facilities, car parking and access for emergency services.

“The introduction of additional infrastructure like this is just not feasible in a national park, and would be wildly opposed by conservation and environmental groups, not to mention Noosa ratepayers who would be left to pick up the bill.

“Where would Sunshine Beach Surf Lifesaving Club find volunteer resources during the summer, and Noosa Council during the winter months? Similarly, where would our already stretched police force find the extra resources required to keep patrons safe.

“I am pleased the verdict is in and that it is a No,“ Mr Elmes said.

THERE was no mountain high enough or mud pit low enough to stop local man Robin Braidwood from conquering the gruelling Tough Mudder course.

The 18km obstacle course of high walls, mud pits and barbed wire is already well known for being one of the toughest physical challenges, but Robin was among the bravest taking on the course despite his lack of vision.

Robin, a massage therapist in Peregian Springs, gradually lost his sight after being diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa in his mid to late twenties.

It was through his profession that Robin, a former 10km runner in his homeland of South Africa, met fellow elite runner and running coach Norbert Petras and the idea to compete in the Tough Mudder

was born.

Norbert ran alongside Robin throughout the course and guided Robin over and under each obstacle course which took place on Saturday 7 May at the Sirromet Winery.

Norbert said the event went better than he expected and both runners finished with smiles on their faces and full of relief.

“We felt many different emotions. Some of relief that we got through it without hurting ourselves. I was worried for Robin as something could have gone wrong very easily at any point,” Norbert said.

“There were many competitors with grazes on their faces, rolling around on the ground in pain from rolling ankles, injuring their knees and being carried out in braces on the rescue quad bike.”

But the pair didn’t escape without a few scratches and bruises of their own as Norbert recalls the toughest obstacle of them all; the electric shock obstacle.

“What a nasty way to finish,” Norbert said.

“I think we got the double whammy as we had to link arms to get through the electrical circuit as quickly as possible. Every time Robin got zapped, I also got zapped and when I got zapped, he also got zapped.”

But Norbert said the running duo had a great time overall and were supported by the organisers as well as other competitors.

“Everybody cheered and helped us along the way and through the obstacles as well as helping each other. It was so good to see everybody looking after each other.”

Plans afoot for convention centre CCIQ Noosa has backed plans for a worldclass convention centre and performing arts complex to be built in Noosa.

Study chairman and past Tourism Noosa director Rick Cooper and local chamber president Peter Chenoweth presented a pre-feasibility study paper to Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington, outlining what small business wants for the region.

Mr Chenoweth said not just one building, but adjacent centres could be a “game-changer” for Noosa and bring in millions of muchneeded tourist and business tourism dollars.

“The document does not recommend one facility with dual purposing but two distinct and complimentary centres operating independently but co-operatively,” he said.

The buildings would include a dedicated convention centre with a 1000-theatre-style seating capacity plus a 700-seat dedicated performance centre on the same site.

“The aim is to create a cultural and business-tourism hub in central Noosa to refocus the Noosa Brand for innovation, creativity and style,” Mr Chenoweth said.

He said this significant infrastructure project would also bring a much-needed range of business and employment opportunities for Noosa.

Study chairman Rick Cooper said Noosa Council had sought creative and “out-there” projects from the business community and residents.

“The Noosa economy is driven 70 per cent by high volume tourism, but the economic value of that reliance and dependency can be improved. There is an opportunity to shift a significant part of that volume into the highyield meetings and convention sector at a larger scale,” he said.

“We can build on our excellent business events reputation and our outstanding entertainment and the arts sectors, hence coupling the convention centre with a new stand-alone performing arts facility.”

Cr Wellington said council would seriously consider the 35-page document from CCIQ Noosa.

“Initially, it will be assessed by key staff and councillors. If and when we decide to embark on a full feasibility study, we would certainly need to garner external expertise,” he said.

“This interaction with CCIQ Noosa is exactly the type of conversation Noosa Council encourages. We are always keen to engage with representative organisations in our community and we are certainly not afraid of big ideas. Af-

New plan for memorials ROADSIDE memorials were the topic of debate in a new draft policy currently before council.

The Management of Roadside Memorials Policy was brought before council at the Services and Organisation Committee meeting held on Tuesday 10 May. The policy would apply to council land only and states clear guidelines on the placement and removal of roadside memorials including white crosses and memorabilia.

Prompted by a recent complaint to council over a roadside memorial outside residential premises Noosa Council director of community services Alan (Fox) Rogers said the policy was not a “policing” policy, but was a guide for council when dealing with complaints.

“We’re not intending to go out and do an audit of every roadside memorial and we would only be looking at acting in response to a complaint,” he said.

“Currently, if there’s a complaint, we have no opportunity to react to that complaint because we have no policy basis on which to do so.”

Mr Rogers said although roadside memorials sometimes acted as a warning for other drivers to slow down, there were also issues of safety and distraction for drivers.

“If there’s a memorial in the middle of a roundabout then there are safety issues when people want to add to the memorial, when they are trying to cross a double lane road," he said.

INBRIEF Just lock 'em up LOCAL police are asking residents and tourists to lock up or lose it after a recent spike in car break-ins.

Acting officer in charge Senior Sergeant Dean Holmes said cars were being broken into while parked in driveways or in beach carparks.

“Many cars haven’t been locked and we’re seeing a big rise in incidences of theft,” he said.

“Make sure you lock your car, even if it’s in your driveway or carport.”

Tip-offs pay off

A new policy on roadside memorials is currently before the council. should remain in place for a maximum of three months.

The policy also states memorials should consist of white crosses only, however Councillor Ingrid Jackson and Deputy Mayor Frank

Wilkie both raised concerns over the restrictions of the memorial type saying the addition of a “white cross” negated other religions.

The policy will be brought before the council again in coming weeks.

POLICE are urging residents to come forward with information on suspicious behaviour.

Acting officer in charge Senior Sergeant Dean Holmes said local police were able to arrest a wanted suspect recently thanks to a concerned citizen giving police just a small piece of information.

“A gentleman came into the station and gave us some information which he thought would be irrelevant,” he said.

“But we were able to piece together a lot thanks to this man and were able to arrest a wanted suspect.

“We urge anyone who sees something suspicious to please drop in or give us a call - you never know what that information can lead to.”

Tackling cancer, with cash

By RUSSELL BENNETT NOOSA will be one of the stopovers on a remarkable mission around Australia aimed at raising a million dollars for cancer research.

Mark Ratchford, a qualified skipper and diehard fisherman, will depart the Melbourne Boat Show on 19 June to circumnavigate Tasmania and mainland Australia - over 16,500 kilometres - and fish as he goes, raising much-needed funds for the Cancer Council before ultimately returning in November.

That’s one man, one boat and 148 days of fishing in what will be one of the biggest challenges of its kind ever undertaken.

His aim - through his organisation ‘Fish For Life’ and a tireless organising committee - is to raise between $500,000 and $1 million.

In all facets of his life, Mark has seen people he’s cared deeply about from professional mentors; to family friends; to infant children of family friends - lose their battles to cancer.

It has affected Mark so deeply that the man who drives interstate trucks during the week and runs fishing charters on weekends has found a way to combine two of his biggest passions - raising money and awareness in the fight against cancer, and hitting the open water.

“I’ve just seen so many people touched by the disease, and so many good people lose their lives,” Mark said.

“I woke up one morning and said to my wife: ‘I want to do something - something big’.

boat for 36 legs around the country.

For a donation, people can take up a seat for anywhere between one day and 10 days’ fishing and fundraising.

“The whole committee wants to be a part of helping people survive,” he said.

“Our angel wings on the side of the boat are fantastic as well.

“The way I look at it, I’ll be traveling with a guardian angel. People do a $50 or more donation and they get their loved one’s name on the side

of the boat and it goes on to a page on our website where they can put a picture of them and a story about them.”

Katrina Constant’s stepfather, Robin Bjorksten, was a keen fisherman and travelled with his partner Marion for about eight years around Australia - finding their favourite fishing spots along the way. They returned due to Robin’s ill-health - he was diagnosed with leukaemia. In February 2015 he was told he had melanoma which had quickly spread, and he sadly passed away that April.

“To then find out it sails away on my mum’s birthday (June 19), it gave me goosebumps - it was meant to be.

“I know he will be looking down and smiling, awaiting his new journey.”

Students from the NDSHS Interact Club slept rough on Friday night 6 May to help raise awareness and funds for Australia's homeless population.

One with nature MORE than 50 Noosa District State High School students and staff slept rough last Friday night 6 May to help raise money and awareness for Australia’s homeless.

Camped out with nothing more than a sleeping bag and a cardboard box, 47 students from the Interact Club and four teachers battled a chilly May night to experience what a night on the streets might be like.

The event was organised

by NDSHS Interact president Matthew Craigie who hoped that the NDSHS students sleeping rough on the cold concrete floor of the H Block precinct would be able to experience and appreciate

firsthand what the 105,237 homeless Australians undergo each night.

"As we went to sleep on the concrete ground, we were all able to spare a thought to all the Australians who do not have the luxury of a warm, comfortable bed or basic shelter,” he said.

“At least we knew we would be safe sleeping rough at the school. Many homeless people go to sleep at night worried they will be attacked during the night or that the little property they own is stolen.”

dents with a nutritious 'soup kitchen’ dinner.

The funds raised through students obtaining sponsorship for participating in the event will be used to purchase Street Swags (waterproof bedding and shelter) for the homeless.

The total amount of money raised is not yet known at this stage, with some students continuing to seek sponsorship this week after they proved to friends and family that they completed the sleeping rough challenge.

Many of the 47 students who slept over at the school raised over $80 through sponsorship.

Eclectic fusion at festival EVERYWHERE you turned on Saturday 7 May at the Cooroy Fusion Festival there was fun to be had.

Live music, street performers, fantastic food, kids activities, talented artists, literary vents, market stalls, woodworking, motorbikes, animals, displays by community groups and businesses, orchids and plants, body painting, smiles everywhere and perfect sunny weather.

Outstanding Achievement of the Year: Talisa Brady.

MORE than 18 awards and two life memberships were handed out at the Sunshine Beach Surf Club’s night of nights.

The highly anticipated annual lifesaving award presentations were held at the club on Saturday 7 May, and saw the club celebrate its unblemished record of no major accidents between the flags for another season.

Two new life members Bill Twigger and Warick Redwood were officially welcomed as life members and a combination of seasoned and new volunteers were acknowledged for their contributions this season.

Award winners included

Lifesaver of the Year Damian Hopkins, Most Improved Lifesaver Jamie Gordon, Best New Lifesaver Chris Price and Nipper of the Year Ruby Nolan.

15-year-old Talisa Brady took out the award for Outstanding Achievement of the Year after winning medals at every level and every discipline of competition this past year at Branch, State and Australian level in both surf sports and an individual gold medal in Champion Lifesaver at the Australian titles.

Sunshine Beach volunteer lifesavers now take a well-deserved rest until the next patrolling season commences in September.

Pennants to the past TWELVE months after the closure of the Noosa Heads Bowls Club, former club members have marked the occasion by hand-sewing a unique tribute to the Noosa Junction site.

A collection of competition ribbons and pennant flags won by former Noosa Heads Bowls Club members have been sewn together by fabric organiser Brenda McFeeters to mark the anniversary of the closure after 45 years of operation.

and wife of the club’s longtime coach, along with Jenny Bowie, spent many painstaking hours creating the tribute.

Brenda hopes former bowlers will see the tribute as a way of preserving the history of the Noosa Heads Bowls Club.

The former bowls site in Noosa Junction remains vacant, which Brenda said is heart breaking.

Since its closure 12 months ago member have “dispersed to the four winds”, many transferring to Tewantin.

“Sadly, we estimate 30 and 40 have given up bowls all together,” Brenda said.

“In the end, the club went down with $2.5 million in the bank, which it could not spend. What a travesty,” said one former bowler who wanted to remain unnamed.

“The money has now been given away to bowls clubs all over the Sunshine Coast region.”

It is hoped a permanent home will be found to display the banner and other club memorabilia.

VOLUNTEERS make the community go round, and Noosa Today wants to shine a light on those who give so much back to the community they love, during this National Volunteer Week from 9-15 May. This year the volunteer week will focus on how those who give happily, live happy, with research showing volunteers are happier, healthier and sleep better than those who don’t volunteer.

According to research at Volunteering Australia, 96 per cent of volunteers say it

makes “people happier” with many volunteers experiencing a “helper’s high”, a powerful physical and emotional feeling experienced when directly helping others.

Just a few hours of volunteer work can make a difference to happiness and moods, with sustained volunteering linked to better mental health.

A strong link has been found between the well-being, happiness, health, and longevity of people who are emotionally kind and compassionate in their charitable

Annie Evans Noosa Branch of Queensland Cancer Council Volunteer since 2011 “THE reason I joined the Cancer Council was because it interested me to join a group where I could help to make a difference. I had lost friends to cancer and had others go through it and survive. I had two of my best friends diagnosed with breast cancer in the same year. They were so courageous.

Feeling helpless, I felt this would be a way I could help them by getting out there and raising money for research, look and feel better wig and turban libraries, equipment and so many more things that makes a person going thru cancer live just a little bit easier.

There are so many wonderful volunteers in Queensland, and we hope together we can do more. We hope if we make just a little difference it is well worth the effort. One day, we hope to be cancer free. We have several fundraisers over the year coming up on Thursday 26 May; The Biggest Morning Tea brings together friends and strangers. All the money raised goes back to Cancer Council Queensland. This is a big team effort by volunteers from our branch. We all get together and enjoy a cuppa and morning tea and contribute towards our fund-raiser with buying raffle tickets and paying $15 entry. The bags will be made available at shopping centres on a “borrow and bring back" basis so, on those days when you forget to take your reusable bag to the shop, you will have a more environmentally friendly alternative to opt for rather than plastic bags. I believe when you’re passionate about a cause, idea or charity, then you give as much as you can such an easy task when we all work together.

Another reason I am passionate about volunteering is that I live in an amazing hinterland town, Pomona. Our local community comes alive on the festival day - but even leading up to and after the festival we have visitors coming to town to walk or run Mount Cooroora.

They also like to visit the much- loved op shops run by volunteers, antique shops and then finish with a lovely lunch at one of the many local cafes. Businesses thrive and it’s great to see people enjoying our lovely town.

Volunteering has given me many rewards over the years which include some great friendships. When our family moved to Pomona in

The alternatives are out there, but they’re not always easy to find.

Through Boomerang Bags we can start these conversations, make friends, up-cycle materials and slowly but surely shift our society’s throw away mentality to a more sustainable revolution of reuse - one community, needle and thread at a time.”

Donations keep Coast Guard afloat KIRSTY Pattern of Malu Os handed a $100 cheque to Noosa Coast Guard commander Alan Hall to say thank you for their support of the Rainbow River Festival held.

The Coast Guard accompanied the colourful boats as they made their way along Noosa River as part of the post-Mardi Gras celebrations.

The Rainbow River Festival was held on Sunday 20 March.

The Coast Guard is a volunteer-run organisation that relies on donations by community members and groups to stay afloat.

Annie Evans has helped to organise a morning tea for cancer research at the Boathouse Noosa.

Cuppa for a cause IT'S that time of the year again when friends old and new meet over a cup of tea and slice of cake to help out a good cause.

The Biggest Morning Tea is back, and Noosa residents and visitors are invited to enjoy yummy treats with a view as the Cancer Council Noosa Branch host their annual morning tea at the Noosa Boathouse.

Cancer Council’s Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea is a chance

for friends and neighbours to get together and raise money for a great cause. With one in two Australians being diagnosed with cancer by the age of 85, every dollar helps to make a real difference by funding Cancer Council’s vital research, prevention and support service programmes.

Morning tea co-ordinator Annie Evans said this year would see the event being held in another beautiful Noosa location which

overlooks a picturesque Noosa backdrop.

“We’re very lucky to have such a beautiful location again this year, and guests are sure to enjoy the view as much as the handmade treats,” Ms Evans said.

“There are also many lucky door and raffle prizes including vouchers, hampers and much more with all funds raised on the day going to the Cancer Council of Queensland.

“The money could be used by the Cancer Council for wigs or turbans, support and prevention services, or even research.”

Lives are in their hands

By RON LANE TO say that the guest speaker held the crowd in the palms of her hands would have to be the understatement of the year - and the occasion was the annual Salvos Red Shield Appeal Breakfast, held at the Noosa Convention and Exhibition Center Tewantin.

In his opening remarks, master of ceremonies Lieutenant David Sutcliffe of the Noosa Corps, explained that an amount of $800,000 was set to be raised right across the coast. He then informed the gathering that on many occasions some $1500 was used to assist and 50kg of fresh food was distributed per week.

However this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the massive good work done by the Salvos in our community.

The official welcome was presented by appeal committee chairman John Madill. During this he expressed a very sincere thank you to the 200-plus people in attendance and also drew attention to the fact that it was the fifth time that this annual fund-raiser had been held. He then went on to acknowledge the ongoing work done by the Salvos in our community and in particular emphasised “the great many lives bought back on track by these people”.

Following the official greetings it was time for guest speaker Carren Smith to take centre stage. This lady is now classed as one of the most innovative and inspirational leaders in the field of human growth and expansion.

During her opening remarks, she asked a question that definitely grabbed everyone’s attention: “At the end of your days don’t you want to look back on your life and say - it was great?“ To watch and listen to this attractive, smiling young woman, it seemed hard to imagine that here before us, was a human being whose journey through life can only be described as being ’to hell and back’.

Born in South Africa in 1970 and migrating with her family to Australia in 1977, her private life went into massive decline when, in 2001 her partner committed suicide. Believing it was her fault, she was “catapulted into the depths of darkness and despair”. To end this she decided to finish it all during a trip to Bali; accompanied by her unsuspecting best friend Jodi and another girl Charmaine.

However she was then caught up in the Bali Bombing which not only dropped her at death’s door but also took the lives of both her friends. From then on her fight for life and the road back to good health and eventual happiness was, to put it mildly, absolutely incredible. In her book Soul Survivor she tells it all.

Once again the committee of Red Shield Appeal upheld their reputation of not only providing a guest speaker of renown, but above all creating an atmosphere of welcome and friendship. Well done to all involved.

Writer finds the funny side of life POPULAR author, screenwriter and journalist Benjamin Law is among the speakers to take the stage at Noosa Library Service’s upcoming Queensland Week events.

Law is the author of two books, the black comedy memoir The Family Law, which has been adapted into a TV comedy for SBS, and the travelogue Gaysia: Adventures in the Queer East.

At the event he will share tales about growing up as a minority on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, coming to terms with his identity and finding comedy in tragedy.

Noosa Library Service collections and services co-ordinator Tracey King said she was thrilled to welcome Benjamin Law to Behind Queensland’s Words: a Queensland Week Celebration.

“A successful author, screenwriter and journalist with a significant following, his written work has appeared in more than 50 publications,” she said.

“Behind Queensland’s Words: a Queensland Week Celebration promotes Queensland’s rich literary culture with stories from Queensland authors or which feature Queensland settings.”

Mr Law will share the stage with children’s writer Gregg Dreise and fellow author Annabelle Brayley.

Local author and illustrator of Silly Birds, Kookoo Kookaburra and Mad Magpie Gregg Dreise has a further four books awaiting publishing.

Silly Birds was on the 2015 Premier’s Reading Challenge year one to three booklist and it won the 2015 Speech Pathology Australia Book of the Year award.

Annabelle Brayley tells the stories of people who live and work in the bush.

Her work has earned her a reputation for accuracy, honesty and sensitivity for the way she tells her subjects’ stories without prejudice or sensationalism.

Trained as a registered nurse, Brayley moved to an isolated sheep farm in south-west Queensland after marrying her husband. It was there that she turned to writing. Storytelling has been Brayley’s full-time passion since retiring.

“This is a great opportunity to hear these high-profile authors talk about the writing process. It’s also an opportunity to meet a range of talented local wordsmiths,” Ms King said.

The three authors will speak at a writer’s festival and book fair on Saturday 11 June from 1pm at Noosaville Library – the culmination of a week-long program of activities that includes Queensland-themed displays, storytelling sessions and heritage and travel-talk events.

All events are free of charge but some require bookings.

Behind Queensland’s Words: A Queensland Week Celebration is part of the Queensland Government’s Queensland Week celebrations from 4-12 June.

Art awards announced ANNA Glynn has won the Noosa Regional Gallery’s 2016 Noosa Art Award for her video work ‘Cane’.

The Jaspers Brush (NSW) artist will take home $10,000 in prize money for her piece, which is on display at Noosa Regional Gallery until 26 June.

Local artist Rosie Lloyd-Giblett of Cooroy has also been named a winner, taking home $1000 in prize money for ‘Sediment’ – her winning entry in the inaugural Lyn McCrea Memorial Drawing Prize.

Noosa mayor Tony Wellington and Lyn McCrea Memorial Drawing Prize founder John McCrea announced the two major cash prize winners at Noosa Regional Gallery on Saturday 7 May. Judges – arts writer Louise Martin-Chew and Australian contemporary artist Ian Smith - pored over 64 Noosa Art Award finalists and more than 20 Drawing Prize finalists to reach their verdict.

Both judges said they were impressed by the standard of work, its diversity and the reach of the competition, which drew entries from as far away as Tasmania and West Australia.

Judge Louise Martin-Chew said the Noosa Art Award had been well promoted and the prize pool had the ability to command artists who work in the national realm.

“That is a significant coup for Noosa,” she said.

Lyn McCrea Memorial Drawing Prize judge Ian Smith commented on the style and diversity of the finalists’ artworks.

He said that in making his decision he assessed each work on its merits in their chosen manner and looked at the intention within the work rather than just the stylistic appearance.

Both winning artists said they were thrilled to learn they had won.

“In making the video work ‘Cane’ my hope was to create a meditative work exploring our connection to land and place, reflecting the underlying primal narrative of fire and man within the landscape,” Anna Glynn said.

Rosie Lloyd-Giblett said she felt privileged to have known Lyn McCrea as an artist and a valued community member.

John McCrea, founder of the Lyn McCrea Memorial Drawing Prize, commended all of the entrants on the quality of their work.

“Lyn always thought that you had to be able to draw to be an artist and never went anywhere without a sketchbook,” he said.

The winning artworks will be on display in the gallery until Sunday 26 June. Judges awarded other artists Charlotte Tegan, Chris Bennie, Joolie Gibbs, Cheryl Kensett, Robyn Kinsela and Greer Townshend high commendations.

Shutter bugs go with the flow FOUR keen photographers’ love of Noosa’s waterways has won them a prize.

Noosa Council and Unitywater have named four winners in this year’s Connect to Your Creek Week photography competition, with a new online video showcasing the entries launched this week.

Noosa Council environment officer Jan Maddin said over 50 entries were received.

The winning photos were drawn at random and include business colleagues enjoying a drink against a Noosa River

backdrop as well as fun times at Lake Cootharaba and beautiful sunsets.

The competition, held during the Healthy Waterways Connect to Your Creek Week, celebrates the many ways people interact with their local waterways.

Unitywater spokeswoman Kate Cash said the competition was a reminder that healthy waterways are vital for healthy communities.

Magnanimous in defeat SINCE my early days I have attended Anzac Day dawn parades in honour of my father wounded at the Somme and also my brother who served in several areas in World War Two. Over many years my family and I have participated in the dawn service at Tewantin, usually accompanied by a Turkish friend, longtime resident who has served Australia well at home and in Antarctica as well.

It is an annual disappointment to us that there is seldom any mention of the role of the other side in this erroneous battle we know as Gallipoli. After all we were on the losing side in this affair and surely the opposition deserve a mention.

Without the Turks there would have been no Gallipoli and no opportunity for Anzac gallantry.

They were a valiant and fair enemy and surely when we gather to honour the dead theirs deserve a mention and perhaps a fluttering Turkish flag.

Are we the only ones to hold this opinion?

Join the dots I NOTE with great interest that Glen Elms and the LNP are concerned about the doggy dealings of the ALP in respect of a full preferential voting system.

This system was introduced to State Parliament, to quote the premier, “to bring it in line with the Federal Parliament”. These are the facts.

Since 1950 there have been 26 elections held for the Federal Government using the same voting (full preferential).

Eighteen have been won by the Conservatives Liberal National coalition and eight by the ALP. At a state level in the same period there have been 15 elections using full preferential voting of which 12 were won by the Coalition and three by the ALP. There have been nine further elections in that period using optional preferential (brought

in by the ALP) of which eight were won by the ALP and one by Campbell Newman for the LNP. In my years as a former member of the Liberal Party since 1965 I always had the view, as I suspect the party had, that full preferential was a mathematically correct method of obtaining the most preferred representative.

I suspect that voters think more about their choices when they have to fill out all the squares to make his or her vote count.

The Premier is either very kind (or stupid) to render this apparent advantage to the Opposition.

Likewise, the Opposition is, in my view, being very stupid for not gracefully accepting the challenge.

Capital crime IT HAS been reported that council staff sick days per month this year March and April are 300 per month compared to 200 days same time last year.

Councillor Pardon is spot on in his claim that council staff are overloaded, no doubt due to the 100 reduction of staff by the previous Mayor Noel Playford.

Extinction-level events WHAT is wrong with this country? It seems to me there is a war and hatred towards our amazing diverse native animals.

K. Fielding’s unbelievable misinformation and hateful attack on our local bats was beyond comprehension (Flap Over Bat Death, Noosa Today, 5 May).

Maybe people need to watch Flying Fox Wings of the Night, a film by an Aboriginal Australian radio reporter with an in-depth look at fruit bats.

They are totally essential for pollinating native trees and some fruit trees.

The pollinate sticks to their fur and eucalyptus need bats to pollinate their trees - no eucalyptus trees no koalas.

We have already lost so many trees for the koalas and more to development and now K. Fielding is advocating for more cruelty to Australian native animals as if there isn’t enough around?

Also, bats eat mosquitos and with the wet humid heat we have been experiencing there are an abundance of mosquitos who actually do spread terrible diseases - some are incurable, some are fatal.

I had visitors from overseas who specifically asked to see the bats so I took them to the Noosa Library and they were amazed and enthralled at these unique animals.

I am so sickened at how much damage is being done to Australian native wildlife right now.

Dynamic duo I MUST say I was absolutely overjoyed to see reported in your paper that Tony Wellington and Glen Elmes are going to do a “political double act” and that local issues in Noosa will be given top priority.

Glen Elmes has been saying for at least eight years that he is going to get rid of the “rotting Hulks” in Noosa River and still they remain, and Tony Wellington has been merely sympathetic to all those residents who suffer from the bat invasion in Wallace Park for a mere four years and done nothing whilst the bat numbers increase to plague proportions, dead and dying animals are dropping out of trees in the daytime, more horses are becoming infected, and the bats have moved into Hasting Streets and Gympie Terrace in their constant search for roosts and food.

Let us hope this wonderful political double act comes up with better schemes than Wellington’s wonderful idea that residents should install double glazed windows and doors to keep out the bats, and to stop the constant noise emanating from them.

With respect to the now deserted Noosa TAFE, Lucy Stanton, the ALP candidate, has been working on doing something with those empty premises for ages.

She has had numerous meetings with the Ministers for Health and Education, both Federal and State, and is getting close to a solution, so our political double may have left their run a bit late - not at all surprising.

No such thing as too many cooks THE adage of too many chefs in the kitchen created nothing but magic at the first ever Noosa Amour event, held under the glistening lights of Aromas Noosa on Hastings Street.

The special dinner event featured four courses from the head chefs of Aromas Noosa, Locale, Rickys and Wood Fire Grill.

Guests were treated to smoked Hervey Bay scallops, potato and corn stuffed piquillo pepper for appetiser, and grilled octopus, tomato, black olive, pickled cucumber for entree.

The main dish was a gorgeous porchetta, slow roasted rolled pork belly, fennel, mustard seed, capers, witlof, apple balsamic.

Closing off the evening was caramel chocolate ganache, buttermilk ice-cream, coffee, hazelnut parfait and cocoa for dessert.

This event was the first in the series with the next event scheduled to take place at Wood Fire Grill.

“As a quick refresher, when you make the winning bid at auction, you immediately enter into a binding contract. There is no cooling off period, so it pays to have your home loan pre-approved,” Mr Nolan said.

“And you’re expected to stump up a deposit - usually 10 per cent of the sale price, before you head off to celebrate.”

“The first rule of thumb is to speak with the selling agent. Confirm that you only need a 10 per cent deposit, not more, and inquire about which payment options are acceptable,” he said.

“Personal cheques can certainly be handy at an auction. The beauty here is that you can make the cheque out to the exact figure of the deposit as soon as you make the winning bid. Be sure to confirm if any personal ID is required for personal cheques.”

An alternative is to pay the deposit with a bank cheque.

“Paying by bank cheque is a preferred option among many vendors however the downside is that most financial institutions

1. Tell us something most people don’t know about you?

Originally from Moree NSW, lived in Byron Bay for 20 years, spent the last 10 years in Sydney’s eastern suburbs before realising I wanted to “wake up and smell the roses” so relocated to Noosa. My wife and kids haven’t stopped thanking me.

2. What has been the most memorable moment of your life to date?

Being at my children’s birth (women are awesome).

3. What do you like most about living/ working in Noosa?

Living a two-minute walk to the open beaches so we can surf before and after school and work, and working in a committed yet relaxed office environment with exceptional people (and great coffee downstairs).

4. Where do you think Noosa property prices will go over the next few years?

Having witnessed the exponential rise in Sydney prices over the last 10 years and

knowing how many families are heading to Noosa to escape this, I see a constant strengthening of the local market with constraint. I spoke to a client today who is selling her apartment in Drummoyne and is coming to Noosa to buy a family home so she can live life again.

5. Where is your favourite part of Noosa and why?

That’s an unfair question! Noosa is greater than the sum of her parts. The open beaches, the tracks through the National Park to A Bay, Tea Trees, the Boiling Pot, Little Cove, the River Mouth and the River and Hastings Street all hold appeal to me as there is somewhere to go at any time of the day.

6. What attracted you to a career in property?

I have been a farmer, I managed pubs and ran sea-kayaking and mountain bikes tours in Byron (with bush walks to watch the dawn at Mt Warning on my days off ) so I was looking for something to help my body last a little longer but still be still be mentally stimulated and challenged daily.

7. What was your most memorable sale or listing and why?

Selling a Rose Bay (in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs) waterfront for a Noosa homeowner for a record $18.4m. The buyer came into the office in Double Bay and was passed onto me as everybody else was “too busy”. He stated he wanted to buy a waterfront so I put him in my car had an inspection within 30 minutes.

Backing for building watchdog “It is a construction watchdog to enforce the rule of law for union bosses and employers who do the wrong thing - no union or employer should be above the law,” she said.

“In the past three years, a third of all disputes in Australia brought before the Fair Work Commission about illegal strikes came from the Queensland construction sector.

“These illegal strikes were organised by the CFMEU and cost employers and ultimately the Queensland taxpayer, millions of dollars.”

MASTER Builders Queensland have weighed in on the controversial topic of building unions, calling on the Senate to vote in favour of the Australian Building and Construction Commission (ABCC).

Master Builders director Corlia Roos said the ABCC was needed to help support and stabilise Queensland’s economy and jobs.

“The re-establishment of the ABCC will strengthen the construction sector, which in turn will benefit all Queenslanders,” Ms Roos said.

“More than 50 per cent of all working days lost in Australia are in the construction sector. This is an extraordinary amount which forces up the cost of building taxpayer funded schools, hospitals and public infrastructure by as much as 30 per cent.

“It is hurting our state’s economy and reducing our attractiveness for vital investment in infrastructure, tourism and other business opportunities.”

Ms Roos said that despite union claims, the ABCC is not an anti-union measure and is not about workers’ rights.

House values back from peak but still on the rise THE trend for capital gains has dropped from the peaks of 2015 with dwelling values continuing to track higher across each of the capital cities over the first four months of this year, according to the latest data from CoreLogic.

Released this month, the CoreLogic April Home Value Index results show the pace of capital gains rebounded from the relatively flat numbers recorded in March, with dwelling values increasing by an average of 1.7 per cent across the CoreLogic combined capitals index.

The latest figures now take the combined capital city dwelling values measure 3.3 per cent higher over the first four months of 2016.

Across the country, housing market trends remain mixed, however, CoreLogic research director Tim Lawless noted the improvement in the rate of capital gains has been ‘broadbased’ during 2016 with every capital city except Perth recording a lift in dwelling values over the calendar year to date.

“The results show value growth moved at a faster pace compared with the final three months of 2015 when capital city dwelling values slid 1.4 per cent lower off the back of weaker market conditions in Sydney and Melbourne,” he said.

“While we’ve seen capital gains moderate substantially after peaking last year in Sydney and Melbourne, dwelling values

continue to trend higher, just not as fast.

“The annual rate of growth in Sydney peaked at 18.4 per cent in July last year and has since moderated back to slightly less than half the peak rate of growth, at 8.9 per cent over the most recent 12 month period.”

Mr Lawless said Brisbane experienced the third highest rate of dwelling value growth over the growth cycle to date; dwelling values in the city are now up 18 per cent.

Australia’s regional markets also exhibited a lift in house values over the year to date.

“While house values across the noncapital city markets have generally underperformed compared with the capital

city regions, regional house values moved 2.4 per cent higher over the first quarter of the year,” he said.

NOOSA is about to get a little more wonderful as Planet Bliss, the first event in the Cosmic Concert series, hits The J later this month.

The who’s who of locally grown talent will bring positive vibes to the Planet Bliss concert including OKA, The Floating Bridges and the Cheap Fakes.

Planet Bliss is the first of a series of concerts masterminded by Peregian Originals cofounder Jay Bishoff which aim to make things just a little more wonderful on Earth through funky vibes and blissful tunes.

Noosa Today asked members of each band where they found their bliss.

No sooner have headliners OKA touched down in Australia than they are off again on another tour, so it was no surprise when frontman Stu Fergie said home was where bliss could be found.

“Nothing is better than having hang time with family, we’re on the road a lot, so when we’re home we just chill out on our beaches, enjoy island time,” Stu said.

echoed Stu’s sentiment and said the band often headed back to nature to find their bliss.

“We will head to the hinterland with an esky, hammock and guitars to chill and hang out together,” he said.

The band are always sure to pick up their empties after a day of chilling out with Dale saying a more positive approach to cleaning up the Earth was the best way to make it a better place.

The dapper-dressed frontman of six-piece Cheap Fakes Hayden Andrews said his method of unwinding was less social than that of The Floating Bridges, saying vinyl records were his source of peace.

“I collect vinyl records, so when I want to relax I just put a record on. It’s my main source of happiness because it can change your mood or help you to bliss out and float away,” he said.

THE Sit Down Comedy Club Double Feature show on Friday 3 June is a mustsee if you need a giggle, chuckle, cackle or ripsnorter of a good time.

The Sunshine Beach Surf Club will play host to two comedians including locally grown Mike van Acker and international comedian Ashley Fils-Aime.

Haiti-born comedian Ashley Fils-Aime has been performing since the age of 18. Touring extensively around the world throughout his career, now the veteran brings his comedy to Australia.

Mike van Acker has spent most of his adult life trying to stay away from comedy but has always found his way back to stand up. Stints as the audience warm-up comedian for Channel 7’s Family Feud did little to dampen his enthusiasm, and after his fourth successful tour of New Zealand’s comedy clubs (both of them) he decided to give the street theatre and magic gigs a big miss, and gracefully accept that he and stand-up comedy are going to be together a long time.

Chorale chimes in on a classic THE much-loved Noosa Chorale will take on a classic when an acclaimed conductor joins the ranks.

Adrian King will conduct the chorale as they perform the Rossini masterpiece known in English as The Little Mass, on Saturday 28 May. This piece brings back memories for Mr King as he remembers singing the tenor line in the chorus at London’s Guildhall School of Music and Drama as a young student and later conducting it with the Grimsby Philharmonic Society.

“I can remember being astonished at the way the music ranged from a hushed lyrical intensity to an animated flamboyance with lots of memorable tunes and rhythmic vitality for which Rossini has become justly famous,” Mr King said.

“This romantic Rossini is neither petite (small) nor solennelle (solemn) as in the classical style of Haydn, Mozart and Schubert.

“Instead, it has a stimulating musical flavour, reminiscent of opera arias or ensemble numbers, but these are carefully constructed and moulded by Rossini to perfectly suit the religious text.”

The concert will feature

the 70-strong chorale members plus seven outstanding vocal and instrumental soloists including tenor David Kidd, who is a familiar face and voice for many as a result of his Ten Tenors and Opera Queensland performances.

As well, winner of the prestigious Australian International Awards and the Ruskin Opera Scholarship Panayiota Kalatzis and graduate of the Queensland Conservatorium of Music Samuel Piper, plus award winning mezzo-soprano Anastasia Bickell will also take to the stage.

Mr King said The Little Mass was often performed with an orchestra, but Rossini wrote it for two pianos and a harmonium and this is the orchestration he has selected for this concert.

“On two grand pianos we have Natasha Koch and Janet Brewer and on harmonium, Huguette Brassine. They are well known to Noosa audiences for their inspired playing at concerts and events,” Mr King said.

EXPERTS say there is strong evidence to support that a combination of lifting weights and aerobic exercise not only assists in losing weight, but can also prevent muscle atrophy and other preventable diseases.

According to US researches at McMaster University, running, cycling, or other aerobic sports will not prevent lean tissue loss on their own.

Instead, it is suggested that a combination of weight training and aerobic exercises is imperative in maintaining lean tissue while supporting increases in cardiovascular capacity.

A six-year study by Bae and Cussler in 2010 tested the hypothesis that women who maintained a high frequency and volume of resistance training impacted significantly on fat loss particularly in post-menopausal women.

Additionally, their study concluded that both men and women benefit from aerobic and resistance training when combined noting that both have been shown to diminish body fat and reduce risk factors for cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

Also consider where heating and cool ducts near the wall need to be located after demolition. Do any need to be moved? Consult a structural engineer to ensure the structural integrity of your home can be maintained if you chose to go ahead with a knockdown.

Mixed bag for Noosa Under 6 Game 1: Matthew Flinders Game 2: Brothers Wolves IN the first match against local rivals St Andrews, the team had some great confidence.

In the second match the team came up against Brothers and even though the boys were tired, there were some great skills and fancy moves coming through with some fantastic side steps and also some runaway tries.

Player of the match for game one went to Connor Lee and Alfie Wood in the second game.

Under 7 Noosa Fins 45 d Brother Wolves 20 THERE was fire in the bellies of the Fins this week, all hungry for a taste of the try line and there were many memorable fly away tries into the corner with Myles, Jackson, Rory, Uli and Kase all getting over. Several turnovers by the Fins had the Brothers on their toes from start to finish and the defence from all boys, especially Harry and Lachie, helped keep the ball in their possession. The unmissable communication by the team had them keeping well abreast of the field and kept the Wolves from reaching their own try line though they made it close several times. The game was fast and furious and the boys were pleased with the result.

Player of the match went to Uli Visser.

Under 8 University 60 d Noosa Fins 45 THE Fins toughest challenge this season so far took place this weekend. Sleepy eyed and missing three key players, the boys stepped out onto the field.

University played a fiercely physical game, frequently ripping Noosa possession away at the breakdowns allowing them to secure a commanding first half lead by four tries.

Gentle re-tuning by the coaching team had the boys holding their own in the second half.

More vigour in contesting the breakdowns and a step up in the tackling rate secured a base for the Fins to narrow the University lead. George White’s hunger for the ball, straight running and consistent high work rate was a pleasure to watch and rewarded with three tries.

Levi’s tackling was simply awesome and his intelligent reading of the game saw him run in two very solid tries. Jacko Peermamode contributed greatly throughout the match and took the pill over the line from 20 metres out, as did Harry Marlow who put important scores on the board.

Player of the match went to James Walker.

Under 8 Noosa Reds 55 d Caloundra Gold 20 A competitive first half saw the score locked up at half time as Noosa and Caloundra traded tries in a see-sawing battle. However, Tuesday fitness training started to pay off as the Noosa players superior fitness showed through

in the second half as the Reds ran in several unanswered points. Thomas and Ritchie were commanding with ball in hand while well supported by Jonty, Darcy and Will, Ezekiel and Harry dotted down a couple each and Conor had a strong defensive game with several territory saving tackles, Alfie’s opportunistic try will be long remembered.

Under 8 Noosa Dolphins 75 d Grammar 25 THE Dolphins ran on to face Grammar Saturday morning for what turned out to be their best hit out yet. There were some fantastic individual performances, with 15 tries on the day, but the stand out try was pure team-work and brought on the biggest cheer from the enthusiastic group of parents and supporters on the sideline. The team seems to have gelled very quickly and their skill levels are going ahead in leaps and bounds. Even the opposition coach commented on their tackling and cleaning out in the ruck.

Under 9 Noosa Reds 70 d University 10 THE Reds warm up is snappy and instructions barked by the coaches are followed to the T. The Reds take the field early and await their prey. The Barbarians, perhaps knowing that the savages from the north have something planned, belatedly take the field.

The first scrum showcases the Reds set play and Clancy kicks the scoreboard over with the first try. No time to put down the pen before Harry, Atticus and then Harry cross the try line again and again.

With a devastating set play at, the forwards began to soften the Barbarian pack. The Olivers, Will and Atticus invited the Barbarians to a rumbling party. Leaving the wide open spaces to Noah, Charlie, Oscar and Charlie.

The pressure on the Barbarians began to tell, fleet footed wingers, set plays and bone crunching tackles bought barbarian parent out to retrieve the fallen. Jamie crossing the line gave a man of the match performance and Harry tackled himself into the Solo award.

Under 10 Brother Wolves 24 d Noosa Reds 12 A sluggish start cost the Reds although they came home like a train. Pearl was her usual devastating self with the ball in hand and Slippery Josh showed some fancy footwork.

Solid defensive efforts were provided by Tom Harmer and Hunter Shedlock. One player was an absolute standout in both attack and defence - Smith Connors. Simply outstanding.

Under 10 Noosa Black 29 def Grammar Rugby 17 SWEEPING the dew once again Noosa faced a fast, strong opposition in Grammar Saturday morning.

Noosa still hadn’t got out of bed as Grammar jumped ahead with two quick tries. With that wake-up call Noosa clicked into gear, controlling the pill and moving steadily up the field. Meat pies surely followed, one to a fill in Saatchi Smith (thanks mate!) and then one to Jack Paenga, who finally ran straight! Jack also managed a neat conversion to his name.

The second half had a repeat of the first, Noosa took a while to switch on, resulting in Grammar sneaking over another double.

The best was to come last, with a huge effort Noosa managed a reply try, thanks to the Bulldozer Jackson Westphal. The only thing to stop Noosa now was time, and we were out of it. Unlucky in a hard-fought loss, well done all.

Under 11 Noosa Fins 51 d Maleny Bushrangers 0 A great all-round display by the Fins team over a gallant Maleny who never stopped trying.

The Fins forwards laid the platform dominating possession after some solid early exchanges. The backs then cut loose with some clinical finishing from the speedsters with Reggie scoring three to deliver his Mum an early Mother’s Day present.

Under 11 Maroochydore 43 d Noosa Reds 12 THE Reds had a tough assignment taking on the joint competition leaders Maroochydore.

The boys went try for try early before a good Maroochydore team prevailed. Despite the loss, the boys continue to improve their structures and organisation which will see them return to the winners circle shortly.

Both tries were scored by Joseph, with one conversion from Leif.

Under 12 Noosa Finz 56 d Flinders 12 THE Finz were on fire from the start, dominating forward possession, making ground phase after phase and taking advantage with blistering pace from the backs. The boys were too hot for Flinders to handle, especially in the first half and took a 35-0 lead into the break. Credit to Flinders who regrouped at half time to make the second half a more even contest, but Noosa took maximum points again and continue to climb the ladder.

Lambassador for lunch THE Noosa Tiger’s first President’s Lunch has been another huge success, setting the course for what is sure to be another impressive year.

Columnist Pittsy reported on the first lunch saying it was the perfect way to launch the 2016 series of President’s Lunches.

“A huge crowd were wowed by the hilarity and Aussie charisma of our very popular ‘Lambassador’ Sam Kekovich last Saturday,” he said.

“I’m sure Sam’s performance will stay in the memories of those who attended for a long time.”

No topic was off limits with Sam telling stories about acquiring a Rolex watch, nearly beating Geelong on his own (with fellow superstar Barry Cable, of course), to the relocation of a good “pommie” friend to Australia, Sam had the crowd in stitched.

“It was a brilliant luncheon with an awesome bloke. Glad I was present,” Pittsy said.

“I’m still giggling.”

The next President’s Lunch will be held on Saturday 21 May from 11am at the Noosa Tigers home ground, Weyba Road, Noosaville.

It was a tough challenge for the NCC boys up against the GSLC boys with GSLC taking the win with a composed team display. Eli, Hayden and Nicholas were deserved team players of the game. Hairy Man had a hard fought win over the NDSHS boys with Lachie, Jack and Kye having mighty games.

ANOTHER round of top junior touch footy action last week with the U10 games getting the afternoon underway. Ice Angels came out on top in their encounter with GSLC with Tobi, Jasmine and Chelsea-Lee playing well.

The game between Tornadoes and Fireballs went down to the wire with the Tornadoes holding on to take the win.

Sophie, Grace and Laciee all had great games.

Lava Boys gave it their best but were no match for the on fire Running Rebels this time around. Fletcher, Ben and Brandon played strongly for their teams.

Hillbillies (boys) had a win over Foxy Rebels (girls) before they changed the afternoon up with a game of mixed touch. Well done to all of these players for trying something different and for playing with such a great spirit.

Players of the game honours went to Jaxon, Summer and Mia. SBSS (girls) never gave up but came up against a determined Speed Demons crew with Curtis, Luca and Hunter showing great skill.

Knights (boys) showed their attacking qualities against a courageous Angels with Attitude (girls) outfit. Jayden, Maddie and Armin all produced first rate games.

Boxers contest national titles

By RON LANE THIS week is the biggest week of the year for members of our amateur boxing fraternity.

Fighters from all over the country will gather at Picnic Point on the Gold Coast to contest the Australian National Titles.

Nine athletes from the Noosa community will take part; eight from the Impact Boxing Academy in Cooroy and one from the Noosa Box Office in Noosaville.

Head coach and owner of the Impact Academy Mark Evans said, “We are very proud of our team. This will be the largest contingent from one club in Queensland to represent at these titles. To have this many fighters from the one club is amazing.’’

Representing Impact will be Sam and Ben Cameron-Hands, Bailey Seabourne, Cameron Little and Coen Allman and for the girls Taylor Robinson and sisters Misty and Chloe Halley.

The one fighter to represent the NBO will be Abbey Slavin. "Abbey

is a former National champion in the featherweight division,” said coach Israel Kani, “and she will be going all out to regain her title.”

Sanctioned by Boxing Australia, this tournament will also serve as a selection event for the Australian team to box in the World Youth Boxing Championships to be held in St Petersburg, Russia in November.

Of the local boxers, Sam Cameron-Hands and Bailey Seabourne will be eligible for selection and two weeks further on, Taylor Robinson and Brock Shelley will fly to Poland

to take part in another international tournament.

In preparation for the Nationals, some local boxers visited Cairns to take part in the Coral Sea Open Challenge International Tournament.

With teams from Ireland and New Zealand taking part in this three day event, it was for Cairns, the first tournament of its type to be held in the town.

Of our locals, Luke Martin and Bryce Hegity performed well before both being eliminated, unfortunately, both on split decisions.

“Split decisions are not what we want,” said Israel Kani, ‘’but it is part of boxing and we have to put up with it.’’

Speaking of the Coral Sea tournament Mark Evans, who also holds the office of President of Boxing Queensland said: “There was a good crowd but not as big as we hoped.

However it was the first sporting event of its type in Cairns; media cover was great and we thank those people for their support. Our next goal for these types of events will be to obtain sponsorship and this is never easy.”

FATTY Stewart Day was held on Sunday 8 May and a great day was had by all with 20 teams taking part in perfect sunny day.

Winners were Kev Manthey and Rosco Stewart who won a tight finish between four teams and after a countback were awarded first.

Mixed Pairs semi-final Gaye Bible and Mel Hobbins def Rick Goulding and Veronis O’Connor. At the 13th end, Gaye and Mel were leading 16-4, however in a horror end for them, Rick and Veronis secured the end with 8 points. This changed the tempo of the game and it was a race to the last end at 21 all. However Gaye and Mel kept their cool and won the last end by 1 point giving them 22-21.

Special day for croquet COOLUM CROQUET COOLUM Croquet Club has celebrated their 25th birthday on World Croquet Day. The club held an afternoon tea and friendly games of croquet on Saturday 7 May with more than 30 members, family and friends on hand to celebrate the milestone.

The event was attended

by Member for Maroochydore Fiona Simpson and Sunshine Coast Council member Stephen Robinson as well as founding member Jill Page.

Coolum Croquet Club president Allan George said he was proud of the hard work carried out by volunteers to keep the club running.

“We are all volunteers and I think we have carried on the tradition begun by our founding members,” he said.

“With all of us helping we have survived and flourished for 25 years. Thank you to everyone in the Coolum Croquet Club family - be proud of our achievements.”

NOOSA EAGLES SOCCER IT WAS another beautiful Autumn day as the Noosa Eagles played their first game in May at their home ground at Good Shepherd Lutheran College.

Under 6 Black played their best game yet but were unfortunately defeated 3-2 by the Currimundi Starfish. Myles Rollason and Zach Ravezzani both scored goals and Ryder MacDonald won player of the match for his improved skills on the field.

Under 7 Black defeated the Bli Bli Jousters 8-1 after a display of great skills from both sides. Player of the week was awarded to Aiden Perquin who played a very good game and nearly scored a few goals.

Eli Robins and Rohnan Mills scored the goals, while three goal keepers - Kaitlin Perquin, Charlee Benton and Tristan Purcell - stopped many attempts though out the game.

Under 8 Gold had a cracking day and a cracking score as they defeated Under 8 Black 15-2. Archer Ward took home player of the match for his great team work. Goals scored by Xavier Attard, Bonnie Boyes, Joel Fitzgerald, Bella Hillegers, Harrison Howard, Ty Oakley, Reuben Taylor and Montannah Ward.

Goodbye Mum, and thanks Life of

YOU need to look after your mum, someone said the other day. You only get one.

Half an hour before I sat down to write this column I received the information that mine had passed away, so forgive me if I’m a little sentimental this evening. It hasn’t been an easy week or so leading up to this.

We sat by her side 48 hours before she went, kissed her hollow cheeks and, frankly, I hoped I never would see her again, at least not this side of St Peter’s Gate. It was too sad to look at the shell of a once-vibrant person with no support systems left, internal or external. And now, just as we head off to dinner with friends in Sydney, my sister phones to say that she has gone.

I sidle into a bar and order two glasses of good champagne. My wife and I toast the life of Margie Jarratt, dental nurse, corporal in the Women’s Auxiliary Australian Air Force, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, Girl Guides commissioner, extraordinary talent with needle and thread, master of the sewing and knitting machine, chef extraordinaire known throughout the civilised world for her Anzac biscuits and her leftovers masterpiece, “bread and duck under the table”.

Mum made my boardshorts for me and taught me to drive because Dad was too busy. She made me eat beetroot and brussel sprouts until I gagged and wouldn’t let me wear long pants to church until I was 14.

She could be tough, but she also had a soft side, and enjoyed a slightly offcolour joke and a couple of glasses of scotch.

She was the only one who was able to extract anything positive out of me getting expelled from school.

“This is a good lesson in life,” she said, as Dad’s jaw dropped through the floor. She also had a whacky, and sometimes quite bizarre sense of humour.

We effectively lost Margie a few years ago, around the time of her 90th birthday, when she put on a good show over dinner, blew the candles out, raised her glass and drank the champagne, but clearly didn’t understand what all the fuss was about.

Since then it’s been a not-so-gradual downward spiral into the fuzzy small world of dementia, from which she was finally released last Sunday evening.

Love you, Mum. May you rest in peace.

My other big sister As often happens in these times of family tragedy, there are joyous reunions for the saddest of reasons.

Among these, for me, was meeting my other “big sister”, Toshiko Kojima, after more than half a century. When she came to live with us in 1962, the wounds of war were still very raw and real, and for families who had lost loved ones in the Pacific theatre, Japanese remained persona non grata. My father never saw action against the Japanese, but he served in Darwin and Melville Island when invasion seemed imminent, and I’m sure if he didn’t actually share the hatred of the enemy, he heard it expressed often enough for some of it to rub off.

I thought the same thing when she appeared at the arrival gates at Sydney Airport and ripped off her travel mask to reveal the fine bones and clear alabaster skin I’d admired in

WITH the flags down for another winter, and our brothers in arms the lifeguard hitting Noosa's Main Beach, Sunshine and Peregian the three surf clubs are now undertaking a total review of the season past.

This is something that all clubs do for as the heart and soul of our very existence is rescue work and as our beach patrols are our showcase, to conduct a thorough overhaul of all aspects is of the utmost importance.

Sunshine Beach has made a good start, as last weekend they held their annual dinner and presentation of trophies. Highlights of the evening was the presentation of their three major awards for lifesaving during the 2015/'16 season.

On top was the Life Saver of the Year, Damien Hopkins, and then Volunteer of the Year, Jane Fraser, followed by Club Person of the Year, Pauline Gleeson.

As these are the three major awards in every club, it is only right that they be named and publicly acknowledged.

Regarding these awards, club captain Scott Summers said, “All three recipients were well deserved; their performance during the season was outstanding.”

For the season itself, Summers was very happy with the overall performance.

“One of the most pleasing aspects is that we now have 178 members available for patrol and this, I believe, is our best for five or more years. Another very positive aspect is that we have taken big steps forward in our relationship with the Noosa club. There has been a lot of interaction with our two clubs regarding the training of bronze squads and IRB training,” Summers said.

“The results of these training programs have been very positive indeed, and I congratulate all involved.

We are compiling our stats regarding hours patrolled, rescues and first aid performed,” he said.

Noosa acting president Barry Leek said, “For us, it has been a fantastic year right across the board. Our patrols have maintained a high standard and our last patrol inspection performed by the branch went extremely well. Our training team has put a lot of new members through their bronze and the Education Department that looks after schools has really done exceptionally well.

In surf sports, the club had its best season ever, so when we look at the boarded picture, for Noosa the year has been phenomenal.”

The vibes out on the street regarding the organising and running of the day-to-day events at the recent Australian Surf Life Saving Championships held at Maroochydore, Alexandra Headlands and Mooloolaba are indeed very positive. There were many of us, myself included, who held their breath when informed that the titles would be spread over the three beaches.

Major points of concern were lack of sandy beaches, communication and transportation between the three clubs.

All worked well, in particular the free bus service that transported people from one beach to another. I am sure that one of the requirements for those volunteering to drive the buses must have been a laid back and

Surf’s up at Noosa THE 2016 SurfStitch Noosa Logger, held over the Labour Day weekend, delivered the spectators and surfers with perfect waves and some exceptional surfing over two beautiful days at Noosa's First Point.

Defending champ Josh Constable made the perfect start in the Open Men's final to set up his third title win, ahead of Dane Wilson and Husni Ridwan.

The Open Ladies Final was overflowing with control, grace and style, Rosie Locke made it two in a row taking first ahead of Isabelle Braly and Kathryn Hughes.

The Junior Boys were phenomenal with Tom Morat in seamless form taking first ahead of Zac Brewer and Nic Brewer.

All the Junior Girls were ripping and it came down to the last wave of the final for Jade Gower to claim the Junior Girls 2016 title edging out Adelaide Smith and Lilliana Bowery in the closest of finals.

Other winners were Damien Coulter Over 40s, Reid Johnson Over 50s, Eric Walker Over 60s and Matt Cuddihy in the Old Mal.

Cooler weather brings on reef species

By JACK MANGROVE THE fishing offshore is definitely on the improve; with good-sized fish on the wider reefs, water depths to the 60m mark are where the better snapper and pearlies will be sitting.

The Barwon Banks, the Hards and Double Island are the places to head for a big knobby snapper or a nice feed of pearlies.

Sunshine Reef is again the place to be for the smaller craft, a berley and a good tide you will still pick up some nice pan-sized snapper, sweetlip, and the odd coral trout.

On the beaches, the bream are about in the deeper holes and gutters, tailor are also starting to show up on the Noosa’s North Shore, best baits have been salted bonito

strips or large pilchards on a set of ganged 4/0 hooks.

When targeting tailor, the more anglers the better, with more baits in the water the better likelihood of the schools hanging around.

Jew are also on the cards with some nice fish coming from the southern beaches around Coolum.

Whiting are also in the gutters as well as dart.

In the river the trevally are still on the chew, cale cale golden and giant trevally are in the river at the moment and soft plastics like the Keitech Easy Shiners are perfect for the job.

There has also been some quality tailor in the river at the moment. Both the trevally and the

tailor have been most active in the low light periods.

At the river mouth we are seeing the odd nice sized school jew, try the squidgy pro range in the 100mm with a heavier jig head to get you to the bottom.

Whiting have also been in good numbers around the Frying Pan and the Dog Beach. Worms, pealed prawns, and yabbies have all been perfect baits.
