By PETER DOUGLAS CATCHING a heritage train from the city to Belgrave could become a reality, if La Trobe MP Jason Wood gets his way.

The MP yesterday unveiled a multi-million dollar proposal which centres on transforming Puffing Billy into a ‘mega tourism destination’.

Mr Wood visited Steamrail Victoria to discuss the restoration of the old Red Rattler trains with the Clark twins, Tom and Kevin, from the ElecRail Division of Steamrail Victoria on Tuesday 5 May. The proposal comprises four main elements: The restoration of the Red Rattler trains which would transport passengers from Melbourne central business district to the Belgrave start point of Puffing Billy.

Building a $9 million Discovery Centre at Emerald Lake to display the rich history of the Puffing Billy and the hills.

The creation of the Villages of Mount Dandenong Walk.

Opening of the Bullen Bullen Indigenous Tours.

Mr Wood said the hills area was already popular among day-trippers but more could be done to increase length of stay.

“Combining these four projects will deliver a great benefit to La Trobe and to Victoria,” he said.

“When the restoration of the Red Rattlers is complete, they can facilitate a connecting link from the CBD to Belgrave.

“Combine this with the $9 million Discovery Centre ... and you have a huge incentive for tourists and Melbournians to come and explore the Dandenong Ranges.”

Other media outlets have reported that Public Transport Victoria, Victrack and Metro have been consulted.

Kevin Clark, manager at ElecRail Divison of Steamrail Victoria, said ElecRail was working collaboratively.

“ElecRail is currently working co-operatively with Metro trains to again enable the preserved red rattler to operate a special excursion,” he said.

“While fundamentally in good shape, the train needs a repaint following a vandal attack, and safety enhancements are also required.”

Sour vintage ON the eve of the 60th anniversary of the Kalorama Vintage Car Rally, event organisers were shocked as Yarra Ranges Council advised the 2016 event could no longer take place at the Kalorama Memorial Reserve.

They were also informed the event could no longer be held at the reserve in the future.

After decades of continuous use at the oval, the dedicated event committee pondered not only having to cancel the 2016 event, but the prospect of never seeing it again at the beloved site.

Summing up the situation on their Facebook site, the committee posted the following message: "This 60th Anniversary Rally will therefore be your last opportunity to take part in the event when held on the beautiful Kalorama Memorial Reserve.

Please come along. Whilst the Rally will endure and be held elsewhere within the local area, you will never again have the opportunity to attend the event on this oval."

However, their subsequent fight to see this year’s event reinstated was successful.

Also, their fight to see it continue at the oval seems to have made good progress.

Event chairman Peter Edgar said another successful rally last month was further proof it should continue at the reserve.

“The council’s main concerns were potential for damage to infrastructure and the surface,” he said.

“(But) the last event was very well patronised, when we left we couldn’t even see a tyremark.

“We’ve posted photos on Facebook to support this; there was no rubbish, perhaps one coffee cup.”

Mr Edgar said he has been overwhelmed with the level of support.

“We’re strong in our resolve and the CFA and community is right behind us,” he said.

“We’ve had a huge groundswell of support.”

The event attracts some high-level vintage cars; this year featuring a 1936 supercharged 540K Mercedes that was around in the Nazi Germany era.

Others to feature included a 1935 grand prix Bugatti Type 35C racing car and a 1917 Indianapolis GP replica.

The event also acts as a major fund-raiser for the Kalorama CFA. Despite the confusion over the past few months, Yarra Ranges Council has given at least verbal support for the event.

Mayor Jason Callanan confirmed the council had been monitoring the site’s usage.

“Yarra Ranges Council has been investigating the impact of holding the Kalorama Rally on the oval at Kalorama Memorial Reserve, determining that the oval will be able to be used for the event on an ongoing basis,” Cr Callanan said.

“The council has made considerable investment into sports

field infrastructure across the municipality and wants to ensure that all fields and protected and maintained for the use of families, sporting clubs and community groups.”

Cr Callanan said the event would continue at the site.

“I am proud that the council can continue to support this long-running community event, which has been with us for 60 years,” Cr Callanan said.

“I now hope the community and organising committee are reassured that the event will remain at Kalorama oval for years to come.”

Cr Callanan also added the reasoning for the initial advice on this year’s event was merely policy.

“In the event of significant rainfall 40 hours prior to an event, access may be restricted for safety reasons and to ensure the ground is protected for ongoing use,” he said.

“In regards to the 2016 Kalorama Rally, the council had some concerns about preserving the drainage and turf works completed late last year as a significant rainfall had been predicted.”

Mr Edgar said the event committee was still preparing a submission for the council, which he hoped would give the event further confidence moving forward.

“We want to seek approval from the council in a co-ordinated manner,” he said.

“We need to know where we’re going next year.”

Caitlyn’s big win

By PETER DOUGLAS PLAY time for the ‘big kids’ is set to become more exciting at Lilydale Lake.

Responding to a letter from local student Caitlyn, 10, Yarra Ranges Shire and Victorian Government heeded the call, contributing more than $1 million for a complete overhaul of the play space.

Works will include demolition of the “tired and ageing” equipment, then replacement with new equipment that caters for a wider range of agegroups.

The existing play equipment for children with a disability will remain, with additional play facilities also included in the design.

Yarra Ranges Shire will contribute $400,000, with the Victorian Government adding more than $1 million from the Interface Growth Fund.

Attending the announcement were Monbulk MP James Merlino, Eastern Victoria Region MP Daniel Mulino, Yarra Ranges Shire chief executive officer Glenn Patterson, mayor Jason Callanan and councillors Terry Avery and Len Cox. Mr Merlino said the value of playgrounds to a community could not be underestimated.

“Playgrounds are very close to my heart, I’ve got three kids,” he said.

“It’s amazing what an impact a playgrounds have in terms of being destinations for local communities.

“It’s important for kids, families, parents and the economy of communities.”

Mr Merlino acknowledged the work of Cr Len Cox, who was in office when the Lily-

dale Lake precinct was established.

Cr Cox said the playground was an important part in the life of his grandson Benjamin, who had a disability.

“The beauty about this new playground is there is going to be more disability swings than now,” Cr Cox said.

“We need that ... 20 per cent of our population in the shire at any one time has got some sort of disability.”

Meanwhile, Caitlyn, a Lilydale Primary School student, braved the waiting media and dignitaries to deliver her speech to help launch the project.

“A couple of years ago, I came down to Lilydale Lake and I was really disappointed when I found there was nothing I wanted to play on,” she said.

“When I found out the council was doing something about it, I was really happy.

“I can’t wait to see and play on the new play equipment.”

Caitlyn’s letter to Cr Maria McCarthy in 2014, which sparked the initiative: “Dear Cr (Maria) McCarthy, I went to the Lilydale Lake today and saw a spider web thing had been chopped down. I thought to myself there should be more big-kid play equipment at Lilydale Lake. The big slide has also been gone for some time now.

It was never put back after someone burnt it down. Can the council please think about putting more play equipment at the Lilydale Lake for the big kids. Thank you.”

Briefly Computers stolen from house POLICE are calling on witnesses to come forward, after valuable computers were stolen from a Belgrave property last week.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Melanie Woods said that a residential property on Belgrave-Hallam Road in Belgrave was broken into overnight, between Wednesday 6 and Thursday 7 April.

Det Sgt Woods said the thieves forced their way into the property and stole computers, with a total value of $2500.

Hunt for building site thief A THIEF who made off with building materials from two sites in Monbulk and Chirnside Park is being hunted by police, with witnesses to two burglaries asked to come forward.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Melanie Woods said that overnight between Monday 4 and Tuesday 5 April, building materials were stolen from a property on Macclesfield Road, Monbulk.

Det Sgt Woods said the materials worth $1000 were stolen from inside shipping containers, at the site of a house being renovated.

She said police suspected the thief also stole building materials, including scaffolding materials and power tools worth $1500, from a building site in Black Springs Road, Chirnside Park, overnight between 31 March and 1 April.

A MOOROOLBARK man will front court at the end of the month for burglaries at the Lilydale Marketplace shopping centre, after being remanded in custody last week.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Melanie Woods said the 40-year-old man was arrested at 11.30am on Friday 1 April and charged in relation to two burglaries between 19 and 20 March at the shopping centre.

He appeared at the Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on 1 April and 8 April, and was further remanded in custody to appear on Friday 29 April.

Det Sgt Woods said a 14-year-old Mooroolbark girl was interviewed and released, pending summons, in relation to the burglaries.

A RARE car worth more than $200,000 was stolen from a Yarra Glen tourist attraction on Saturday, and police are calling for witnesses to come forward.

Sometime between 1.45pm and 2.15pm on Saturday 9 April, a rare 1970 Ford Falcon GT HO was stolen from the carpark of the Yarra Glen Chocolaterie.

Yarra Glen Police Sergeant Richard Coulson said the “extremely

rare” car was worth more than $200,000, and that the thieves likely followed the owner to the Chocolaterie to take the car.

The car is orange-coloured and bears club registration plates of 43143H. Anyone who may have seen any suspicious behaviour around the time of the theft, or who has spotted the car, is asked to call Yarra Glen police on 9730 1296 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

A MOTORBIKE rider was killed in a two-vehicle crash on Burwood Highway in Upper Ferntree Gully on Friday 8 April.

The crash occurred just before 12.30pm, on the corner of Burwood Highway and Dawson Street.

Emergency services were in attendance at the scene and traffic control measures put in place along the highway.

The female driver of the other vehicle was uninjured.

Roads row over cycling event

By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS A WOMEN’S cycling event in the Dandenong Ranges has caused outrage among community members over road closures.

The RACV Ascent bicycle ride will take place on Sunday 17 April with over 600 women of all ages and abilities taking part to increase the participation of women in bike riding.

The event will see many local roads closed to traffic while the event is taking place and local community members have spoken against the plan.

An online petition has attracted over 350 signatures urging the RACV and event organisers Bicycle Network to move the event to another location.

“This event will require significant road closures throughout the area and has been organised without consultation with the local community,” the petition organiser has written.

“This event will have a negative impact on both residents and businesses.

“Given that there is limited access both on and off the mountain; in the event of an emergency these road closures would have a serious impact for first responder vehicles.”

A community consultation meeting was held on 23 February where residents of the Dandenongs could voice their concerns about the event.

Spokesperson for Bicycle Network, Anthea Hargreaves said they have met with local emergency services to confirm they would have access to the roads during the event if needed.

“Following feedback received at the meeting and as part of our event communications plan, we met with local CFA representatives to reaffirm on-event access to the region for CFA volunteers, allowing them to plan accordingly,” she said.

Another concern raised by local residents was the impact on local businesses and service providers.

Ms Hargreaves said Bicycle Network is committed to involving the local community as much as possible in the event organisation.

“As with all of our events, we go to great lengths to encourage the local community to get involved in the ride,” she said.

“Bicycle Network is committed to working with the community and local authorities to ensure that the lifestyles of residents are not unfairly impacted,” Ms Hargreaves said.

Despite the community consultation meeting, residents are still unsatisfied with the impact the event will have on them.

Bruce Johnson of Monbulk said the community has not been adequately listened to by the event organisers.

“What I’m saying is the basic flaw is they are trying to run a major event on dangerous mountain roads.

“The Hills is not the right place to have cycle events,” Mr Johnson said.

Mr Johnson said the disruption caused to residents is not worth the excitement of the event.

“My message to the organisers from my experience is don’t do it in the city, this is crazy.”

Mark Thiele from Kalorama also expressed his disappointment with the lack of community consultation in regards to the event.

“The meeting that bicycle network called wasn’t publicised,” he said.

“I found out about it online and publicised it myself.”

Mr Thiele said nothing was really resolved at the meeting and feels like the community still haven’t been heard properly by Bicycle Network.

“Recreational cycling has become so big and so much of an issue that locals feel scared to use the roads on the weekend and avoid leaving home, this event was what broke the camel’s back.”

Mr Thiele raised road closures as the biggest issue with the event, saying closing any roads on the mountain could lead to disaster.

“The issue is there are three main roads to get off the mountain and once you start blocking any of them, there are major issues.

“The roads blocked by the event are through roads that serve a major area like York Road through to the Yarra Valley and Silvan and Wandin.

“Lots of those road closures will cause major disturbances and we don’t have the infrastructure to absorb it.”

DRIVING along the highway yesterday I came upon a tragic sight.

Ahead of me was a truck stacked high with crates and blowing from these crates were white feathers.

As I passed the truck, I glimpsed the pathetic bodies of its occupants and realised they were ‘spent’ battery hens; for I could see their reddened skin where their feathers had either been rubbed off by the wire or pecked out by their stressed ‘cell mates’.

My heart ached for these pitiful birds, knowing what torture awaited them at the slaughterhouse.

Brittle legs would snap as they were roughly torn from the crates and shackled to a conveyor belt.

Those who succeeded in avoiding the stun bath and automated throat cutter would die in agony when lowered into the scalding tank.

What right do we have to subject these harmless and defenceless birds to this torture simply because we enjoy the taste of their eggs?

Birds’ eggs were never intended to be food for anyone and we certainly don’t need them.

And just in case you’re thinking that free-range hens meet a kinder fate, they don’t.

Keep them safe IN response to Peter Stokes’ letter ‘Fluid on gender’ (Mail, 29 March): As a parent of three daughters, I am a keen supporter of the Safe Schools program.

For too long, we have allowed secrecy and shame to infect our attitudes towards gender and sexual orientation; we learn at a young age to keep our mouths shut rather than be seen as ‘different’ somehow, for to be different invites mockery, violence and rejection.

And it’s always been that way.

Finally, we have a program that changes the rules, allows our youth to be themselves, and encourages their classmates to be accepting and understanding.

I commend the Victorian Government for standing up for Safe Schools; and as a parent, I’m proud to belong to a Party that will always support our youth.

There’s a difference IN relation to Monbulk MP James Merlino’s column, ‘Safe schools a simple life-saver’ (Mail, 5 April).

You want to get the facts straight, Mr Merlino.

Well, let’s do that.

Yes, there was initially bipartisan support for the ‘safe schools coalition’ because there is genuine concern about bullying in schools.

Once parents and politicians discovered this program was more

about teaching children that gender is fluid, and that whatever feels good sexually is OK to do, then, of course, parents became very concerned.

Yes, Mr Merlino, ‘research’ does suggest LGBTI students are bullied, but the statistics you use are distorted because they were done by self-select methods, advertised through homosexual groups and websites.

The real facts are: *This program was devised by a radical ‘social Marxist’, Roz Ward, with an agenda to persuade young people as young as 12, that sexuality is fluid and that you can ‘be’ whatever ‘gender’ your mind tells. *That the program suggests that ‘male’ and ‘female’ are social constructs, which Ward states were devised by capitalists. *That this social Marxist also believes that family is a “capitalist construct” which needs to be deconstructed, that’s why the program suggests parents should not be informed.

Even Roz Ward has admitted that it is ‘not about stopping bullying’ but about promoting “sexual and gender diversity”.

Mr Merlino, you don’t stop children bullying fat children by teaching them that being fat is perfectly normal.

You don’t stop children bullying children who are sexually confused by teaching them that confusion is normal.

You don’t stop bullying by telling children it’s OK for a boy to dress up as a girl and come to school and use the girls’ toilets.

Instead, we need to teach them that all bullying, for any reason, is wrong.

So, Mr Merlino, I suggest that you look at the real facts instead of being blinded by socialist ideology.

Fire danger period draws to a close THE Fire Danger Period for the Yarra Ranges Shire (those areas not included in the Metropolitan Fire District) finished at 1am on Monday 11 April.

CFA District 13 Operations manager Dave Renkin said although the period had come to an end, the threat of fires still remained.

“Grass-fires travel faster than you can run; they can threaten properties within minutes,” he said.

Mr Renkin said residents who wanted to conduct private burn-offs on their properties needed to follow some basic rules, and be aware of weather conditions and local council law.

“Every year out brigades get more and more frustrated at the number of false alarm calls they have to respond to as a result of people not doing the right thing,” he said.

Burning off undergrowth and other vegetation is generally permitted outside of the Fire Danger Period.

Greens set sights on Casey

By JESSE GRAHAM THE GREENS launched their campaign for the Casey electorate last week, with Federal Leader Senator Richard Di Natale joining supporters for dinner at Healesville’s Grand Hotel.

About 70 Greens supporters, Federal Election candidates, Victorian MPs and community members filled the dining room of the hotel on Wednesday night for an evening with Senator Di Natale.

After dinner, Senator Di Natale addressed the crowd, speaking about his trip around the Yarra Valley and into Toolangi earlier in the day.

The trip included visits to Warburton’s Rainforest Gallery, to Healesville Sanctuary, to the Toolangi State Forest and to Toolangi’s Strathvea Guest House, where $3 million in grants were announced for establishing tourism attractions and businesses in the Central Highlands.

He spoke about his own background, as an Italian immigrant, and condemned the Coalition’s $150 mil-

“If Malcolm Turnbull said to his party room, ‘I’m going to allow a conscience vote’ ... that issue would be

done in two weeks,” Senator Di Natale said.

“We can get that done through the Parliament; we’d have a rare moment of unity in a Parliament that’s otherwise so divided.

“But, no, this is a Prime Minister who fought so hard to take the job from the old guy, and he’s gone with the old guy’s approach.”

Senator Di Natale then introduced Dr Sutherland as the Greens candidate for Casey, who said her decision to stand came after years of “complaining” and joining the party in 2014.

She said a “lack of good leadership, and partisanship, lack of action on climate change”, as well as a “lack of support for renewables” and “concern about misogyny in ... our communities”, prompted her to run for pre-selection.

“I decided, right then, if things were ever going to get better in our country, it would be a strong Greens party playing a role in government that will do it,” Dr Sutherland said.

“It was time to really start putting our money where our mouth was.”

Speaking to the Mail after the event, Senator Di Natale and Dr Sutherland said they were ready to campaign for the election, whether a mid-year dou-

ble dissolution was called or not.

“I suspect we will have a double dissolution election in July, and we’re absolutely ready,” he said.

Dr Sutherland, a Monbulk resident, said the biggest issues for the area were about “making Casey liveable” - fast internet, bulk-billing healthcare and even sealed roads.

“We’ve chosen to live in a beautiful part of the world - a lot of us have chosen to live here to be better connected to nature and better connected to country, but, at the same time, that goes hand-in-hand with core services,” she said.

“It feels like regional Australia here, sometimes.

“And regional Australia has got a good case for getting a lot better services across the board, but we do, too, and we’re only 50 minutes from Melbourne.”

She joins Labor candidate Hovig Melkonian in the campaign for the seat of Casey, which has been held by the Liberal Party’s Tony Smith since 2001.

Party pledges $3m for Central Highlands eco-tourism

By KATH GANNAWAY THE GREENS will invest $3 million to boost tourism in the Central Highlands according to an announcement made on Wednesday 6 April in Toolangi.

The announcement, at Strathvea Guest House, was made by Federal Greens Leader Senator Richard Di Natale.

Senator Di Natale had earlier visited the Rainforest Walk in Warburton and Healesville Sanctuary along with Victorian leader Senator Janet Rice, Casey candidate Dr Elissa Sutherland

and Victorian Greens member for Eastern Metropolitan Region Samantha Dunn, where the plight of the critically endangered Leadbeater’s Possum was high on the agenda.

Senator Di Natale said the Green’s vision was to invest in tourism attractions and services that showcase the incredible natural environment of the region.

“The transition to a new economy requires a greater investment in our tourism assets and Melbourne has some of the best day-trip locations in Australia and the Central Highlands

area is one of our gems,” he said.

“As Melbourne’s population grows, we need to capitalise on the huge economic opportunities that come with the tourism boom and ensure there are places for people to connect with nature and unplug from our increasingly 24/7 lives.”

He said Federal grants for innovative local tourism businesses and community-led tourism attractions, as well as establishing the Great Forest National Park, would keep forests intact for future generations and create new, sustainable jobs.

Strathvea owner Deanne Eccles said the commitment was good news.

“This says that finally we’re seeing a willingness to invest in the capital growth of this area,” she said.

“It’s about recognising the future of tourism and potential for growth in the area and also recognising that the Yarra Valley is an hour outside of Melbourne where you are basically going from the city into nature.”

Ms Eccles said the pledge of $3 million would invigorate small business.

Senator Di Natale said regional tourism in Victoria contributed $3.3 billion and provided jobs for thousands of people.

Coaching clubs in ‘respect’

By PETER DOUGLAS AS local football heats up in the region, an invaluable information resource has been delivered to club coaches, called ‘Be the Change!’

Initiated through Yarra Ranges Shire, Inspiro and Eastern Health, the idea is to help coaches to encourage respectful relationships between male footballers and women.

The resource has been designed for local coaches as part of the YOU&I

project, a Yarra Ranges Shire initiative that focuses on raising awareness of gender equality and respect among youth to prevent violence against women.

Inspiro chief executive officer Karyn McPeake said coaches had great influence over the lives of young men.

“Football coaches are in a unique position where they can have a positive influence on the health and wellbeing of young people, and contribute

to a positive culture within community football clubs,” she said. “‘Be The Change!’ highlights practical approaches for coaches and football clubs in raising awareness of this form of violence.”

The resource will be provided to all local football clubs coaches in the Yarra Ranges and made available for others.

Eastern Health senior health promotion officer Josette O’Donnell said

Eastern Health was proud to partner with Inspiro, Yarra Ranges Council and Women’s Health East on the project.

Meanwhile, the initiative follows in the footsteps of the Ferntree Gully District Cricket Association, which last season helped to boost the accountability of sporting clubs when it comes to reducing domestic violence.

Through its pilot program, Communities Against Domestic Violence,

the initiative featured a series of informative events designed to spread the anti-domestic violence message among young men, and culminated in a feature match.

Recently released crime statistics from Victoria Police showed an all-too familiar story, not only for the state but the Yarra Ranges.

Family violence incidents increased in the region from 1374 to 1490, a rise of 8.4 per cent.

Pleased as punch: boxers terminate the competition

By PETER DOUGLAS LILYDALE-BASED Lightning Fight Centres was one of the stand-out clubs at the recent Fitness and Health Expo at the Melbourne Exhibition and Convention Centre.

The three-day event covered many sports, including the Arnold Classic Golden Gloves Amateur Boxing Tournament, which attracted competitors nationwide.

On hand to witness their achievements was none other than the man himself, actor and one-time bodybuilding superstar Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Eight boxers from the club competed, taking home 10 gold and two silver medals.

Club trainer Nick Lundh, himself a kickboxing champion, said he couldn’t be more pleased.

“This has been an exceptionally successful event and I’m not sure if these results have been achieved from any other club,” he said.

Mr Lundh said the boxers from the area are proving to be highly talented.

“Our club in Lilydale would have to be the busiest fight gym in Australia, promoting more than 10 amateur events and four professional events every year, just out of Lilydale,” he said.

“The fighters regularly travel for competitions all over the state, around the country and even overseas.”

Among the stars for the Lilydale club was Jai Doolan, 12, who took out the gold medal in the Sub-Juniors Light Fly Weight Division by a walkover.

Harrison Wall won gold in the Junior Light Weight Division, also claiming gold in a walkover in the Junior Welter Weight Division.

Ryan Harford won a close fight in the Junior Welter Weight Division and won gold, while Ky Hodgson put on a fantastic display to win gold in the Junior Middle Weight Division.

Others to excel were Tiff Van Horick (gold in the Female Light Middle Weight Division), Lochie Clavant (gold in Intermediate Light Welter Weight Division), Alan Harford (gold in the Middle Weight Division) and Shaun Ferris (gold in Heavy Weight Division).

Policing to stop cycle of family violence

By KATH GANNAWAY POLICE play a vital role in the frontline response to family violence.

The Royal Commission into Family Violence report released on 30 March identified an effective police response as “essential to victims’ ability to remain safe, receive a fair outcome, and recover from the violence”.

It’s a big call in a region like Yarra Ranges where, anecdotally, family violence takes up a huge slab of police time - and resources at station level are stretched.

The commission's report acknowledges that significant changes have taken place in Victoria Police in the last 15 years, and that the police had shown “great leadership and commitment to improving the way it responds to family violence” and applauds the Code of Practice that now exists.

It also calls on Victoria Police to make improvements to ensure that family violence is regarded as ‘core business’ and delivers recommendations around leadership, training, cul-

ture and attitudes, intervention orders and other aspects of police response that cover police cadets right through the ranks to the Chief Commissioner.

Inspector Peter Wheeler is in charge of Eastern Region Division 2 that takes in Yarra Ranges, Maroondah and Knox regions.

He says quantifying the amount of time police spend on family violence is difficult.

Along with mental health, drugs, alcohol and road trauma related incidents, he says, however, it is significant.

“I am confident in saying that if you look closely, certainly not in all cases, but more often than not, there is cross-pollination within family violent incidents with issues such as drugs and alcohol or mental health that all contribute to family violence.”

Eastern Region 2 has established a Family Violence Unit and there are Family Liaison Officers in police stations.

Inspector Wheeler said he was

aware in the report of the difficulties associated with time between a police response to a family violence call and getting before the courts in a timely way.

This is being addressed, he said through the introduction of a more streamlined process to get the matter before the court, or to relevant support services.

“The referral process is aimed at getting both the perpetrator and aggrieved family member before people with the skills and knowledge to drill down to the causational factors of the conflict and provide the individual with coping mechanisms to mitigate ongoing behaviour,” he said.

He said repeat attendances to the same addresses take up a lot of police time, and with multiple attendances comes an increased risk.

New approaches are more effective in minimising re-attendance and therefore more effective in minimising risk of repeat offenders and repeat victims, Inspector Wheeler said.

EDVOS (Eastern Domestic Violence Service) CEO Jenny Jackson says there has been a significant preparedness of people to come forward, expose family violence and have the offending person held accountable.

This has no doubt contributed to an increased load on police which Ms Jackson says police they work with put at between 40 to 60 per cent of their workload.

She says EDVOS would like to see more programs like the Repeat Police Attendance and High Rise Responses that operate in the eastern region.

“These are for families where police are called a number of times, or where women and children are considered to be at risk,” she explained.

“Police go out once a week with our worker and visit those homes and talk to the women and children about their safety.

“Programs like that will be much more desirable in the future,” she said.

Ms Jackson said increasing the amount of work police and services do

together will make a big difference.

“What it does is clearly demonstrate to women and children that they are not to blame and allows police to follow up with the perpetrator or respondent,” she said.

“We know that the presence of alcohol and drug use can exacerbate family violence even further, but they are not a cause, and the same applies to mental health.

“Issues around power and control are what cause family violence.”

On police attitudes to family violence, Ms Jackson said there has been a significant change over time and that Royal Commission recommendations for police at entry level had the potential to make a difference.

WHEN the vets from Monbulk aren’t busy in surgery or seeing patients at the clinic they can be seen travelling around the hills on their way to visit horses, cows, goats and other farm animals.

“Equine and cattle work adds a great diversity to the scope of the clinic and it’s great to be able to look after all our clients’ entire family,” said Dr Gemma Coulter.

“It is not uncommon for a goat or a cow to be the favourite pet, rather than the traditional idea of a dog or cat filling that special spot.”

“When I first ever dreamed of becoming a vet, I imagined looking after all animals, both large and small, and it’s fantastic to be working up in the hills where I get the best of both worlds,” she said.

“Every day sees Gemma and I seeing all our favourite dogs and cats, perform both routine and advanced surgery as required, then put on some overalls and head out to see a horse or perhaps a goat, pig or cow.

Formed in 2010, Sisters Doll have moved from their hometown in Western Australia to Melbourne and have been growing in popularity.

Taking inspiration from rock legends like Gene Simmons of Kiss fame, Sisters Doll are known for their epic live performances and showmanship.

After making to the top five acts on a recent series of Australia’s Got Talent, the band has gone to make their dreams a reality.

By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS INTERNATIONALLY renowned comedian illusionist Ben Murphy will put his life on the line at the York on Lilydale later this month.

Performing a death defying escape from a locked milk-can filled with water is just the finale of an adults-only magic and comedy show that must be seen to be believed.

Having spent the time performing to sellout crowds in Asia, Ben Murphy is thrilled to be home in Australia and particularly his home town of Melbourne.

“My goal is to bring the best show to York on Lilydale and show audiences the most engaging and fun nights out they can get,” he said.

“After all it is a magic show but it doesn’t need to always be serious.

“A few moments of the shows are, but it is the downright hard belly laughs and audience participation that you will remember and enjoy long after the curtain goes down.”

Mr Murphy said he is very excited about the escape and can’t wait to bring the excitement to a home-town crowd.

“I can honestly say if you see the show, you have to expect the unexpected,” he said.

Good sports aim to close the gap EASTERN Health’s Closing the Gap Sports Day saw staff face off against Indigenous athletes from around the valley in a football and netball match late last month.

Held on Sunday 28 February, at Healesville’s Don Road Sporting Complex, the Eastern Health staff came out on top in the football match, but lost to community members in the netball game.

The teams came together for the day in the spirit of reconciliation ahead of national Closing the Gap Day on Thursday 17 March, and to raise awareness of health resources for Indigenous residents in the area.

Eastern Health’s Aboriginal Hospital Liaison Officer Jo Voce said it was “terrific” to see families supporting the event, which included a Welcome to Country, a petting zoo and jumping castle, art displays, music and information displays.

“While there was plenty of action on the football field and netball court, today is very much about raising awareness about Aboriginal health in the region,” she said.

“Events such as these, as well as what we do at our hospitals and community health sites throughout the year, reinforce how much of a key priority closing the gap is for Eastern Health.”

PAVE-ing the way THE PAVE Community Arts Festival last Sunday again achieved its aim of bringing together artists, community groups and festivalgoers - all in the name of cultural interaction.

An incredible crowd turned out to what is one of the bigger days of the festival, which continues to grow each year.

EMERALD GOLF WITH the planets aligned to the coefficient of grass growth, it was Graham White (16), at Emerald Golf Club last Saturday, who settled into the algorithm with poise and grace.

His 39 stableford points saw him atop the big box for winners and in A Grade.

David Aitken (25) led the B Grade crowd in with a stylish 37 points from a disappointing rabble.

Once again, captain Dean Shannon played to or bettered his handicap with 38 while Steve Town performed solidly with 37.

Mike Litchfield was nearest he pin on the 4th, Shannon the 7th, Aitken the 12th, Town the 13th and Peter Glasscock slipped the dinero into his pocket for the pro pin 18th.

Brianna McCoy proved the superior golfer in the ladies’ event and was only challenged by playing partner Irene Scott.

It was McCoy’s brilliant putting that saw her through to victory.

On Wednesday, when someone pulled the plug out of the clouds and when 15mm of rain fell during the round, the king of the Overly Fatuous Golfers was Peter Clowes.

He came in with an unbelievable score of 41 points and won the Duck of the round trophy as well.

There struggling gallantly behind were Moss Fuller 37 and Philip Crossley and Ken Hill, both on 36.

There were two rounds of the 4BBB championship played with Sepp Krummenacher and Peter Clowes beating Ken Hill and Peter Glasscock 4/3 while Leigh Morison and Peter Jones accounted for Jeff Marsh and Ken Sumsion 3/1.

Motoring Best fun on four wheels THE Mountain District Car and Bike Show has continued to draw high-calibre entrants from the Yarra Ranges area and beyond.

Now in its 10th year, the enormously popular event is not only a great inspiration for car lovers, but raises tens of thousands of dollars for local charities.

Around $14,000 was raised from this year’s show, which will go towards purchasing a vital signs monitor for a Lilydale-based oncology unit Other local community groups to benefit will include the Men’s Shed in Badger Creek and the Monbulk CFA Auxiliary.

Event organiser Jacqueline Sheppard said the show had gone from strength to strenth.

“There were around seven similar shows in the metropolitan areas on the weekend, so to get such

great numbers is fantastic,” she said.

“There seemed to be a greater variety of vehicles this year.

“The number of bikes this year, too, was pleasing; this is something we’ve been trying to build on.”

There were 20 trophies up for grabs on the day, which were awarded through an independent judging panel.

But Ms Shepard said the day was more about good fun and company.

Organisers had hoped to this year break the $100,000 mark for donations to local charities, but have fallen just short.

However, Ms Sheppard was confident they would reach the total next year.
