Hills-based artist and teacher Ro Bruhn has been busy preparing for the Australian Quilting Convention mid-next month. She said she loves working with fabrics, papers, jewellery and painting in acrylic and pastels, with her use of colour a key theme. Ro says, “Colour plays a vital role in my work. Its in?uence can be seen across all of my art.” She has exhibited in numerous exhibitions and has had her work published in many magazines. Ro teaches altered book and decorated paper workshops and sells her jewellery and mosaics at a gallery in the hills. She is pictured in her studio with two quilts that will be featured in the coming show.

YARRA Ranges Council has paved the way for an extensive amenities upgrade at the Convention Centre at Belgrave Heights.

In front of a packed gallery of objectors, councillors passed an original recommendation at the 22 March meeting, which will see an extension to the existing place of assembly, tree removal, and new accommodation facilities and car park.

The eight-hectare site has been used as a Christian convention centre for more than 50 years, with facilities including a 1650-seat auditorium, reception centre, kiosk, halls, kitchens, and numerous caravan and campsites.

Many groups from around Australia use the site annually for conferences, retreats and church camps.

Twenty-one residents submitted objections to the permit, with many citing issues around noise and fire safety.

At the council meeting, ward councillor Mike Clarke put forward an alternate recommendation, which would have seen the permit denied.

“I just feel that I cannot ignore the significant concern this community has for the development,” Cr Clarke said.

“I have met with the owners (of the convention centre) and their committee ... they certainly appear to be doing the best they can.

“But the real issue here is the community and we can’t ignore the impact on their life.”

Despite the alternative recommendation winning some support from Cr Noel Cliff, Cr Jim Child and other councillors could not be swayed.

Mr van Amstel also cited noise and tree removal as other concerns raised at the meeting.

“There are already trees being removed on permit, but there’s no buffer zone or revegetation taking place,” he said.

“When you consider there are people camping, there must be concerns for their safety.”

Chief Executive Officer of the centre, Geoff Gawler, defended the application, including concerns around bushfire awareness.

“We’re very aware of these issues, we mow regularly and take measures to prepare accordingly,” he said.

“We completely shut down all events on a code-red day.

“We can’t always remove guests on these days, but there are no events so there’s no incentive for them to stay.”

Mr Gawler said they were responsible citizens when it came to noise and the environment.

“We have an annual tree survey by an arborist, we go through council to receive permits and remove trees when required,” he said.

“People often come from the city to relax in the bush environment, we don’t want to turn it into another suburb.”

Mr Gawler said they imposed stricter noise restrictions than required.

“We shut down all music at 10.30pm,” he said.

“Where the new work is being proposed will create greater insulation from where the music is played.”

Mr Gawler said the centre wanted to meet increased demand for accommodation.

“I believe the community’s problem is all about compliance,” Cr Child said.

“But what we’re here to do is to make a decision in regards to the application.

“To me, this application does not increase the number of patrons, (or increase) the number parking ... but gives a great outcome for that site.”

Cr Child also pointed to the initial report, which received no objections from either the Country Fire Authority (CFA), or Department of Environment Later Water and Planning (DELWP), over fire safety concerns.

During the meeting, objectors in the gallery, which included nearby residents, voiced their concerns as councillors deliberated over the recommendations.

Objectors argued events at the centre didn’t finish on time, with event-goers often partying late into the morning.

Another issue raised was how to manage potentially 300 to 400 cars on the site during a fire emergency, particularly on a school day or times with heavy traffic.

Previously, representatives from Yarra Ranges Shire and the centre met with about 20 objectors in November last year, a meeting which the media was not permitted to attend.

Nearby resident Nick van Amstel told the Mail his main fear was the increased potential for tragedy.

“In a bushfire situation, there could be 1000 people, in addition to the residents, seeking to flee the area,” he said.

“The guests are flown in from other parts of the country, they don’t know the area, they

Two men assaulted

By JESSE GRAHAM POLICE are calling on witnesses to come forward, after a man and a Good Samaritan were assaulted in Belgrave on Saturday night.

Belgrave Police Sergeant, Carolyn Sunderland, said that at 11pm on Saturday, 26 March, two men were assaulted at Belgrave’s rear car park, off of Reynolds Lane.

Sgt Sunderland said the first man, believed to be in his thirties, was walking through the car park, and was involved in an “altercation” with another man.

“It’s unknown how the fight started,” she said. The man in his thirties was knocked unconscious, and a passerby who went to assist the man, also in his thirties, was also assaulted by the man.

Sgt Sunderland said a woman at the scene slashed the passer-by across the back “with a sharp instrument”, and that both victims were taken to the Angliss Hospital.

She said neither victim was local to Belgrave.

Police are investigating CCTV footage, and are calling for anyone who may have wit-

nessed the fight to come forward.

The man involved in the assault is described as being of Islander descent, aged in his early twenties, with a solid build and was “unshaven”.

The woman involved is described as about 19 years old, short, with blonde hair. Another woman was believed to be with the two attackers at the time.

Briefly Cheap chainsaw alert POLICE are asking residents to be wary of cheaplyoffered chainsaws, after a burglary at a Monbulk business on Monday, 21 March.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant, Melanie Woods, said that at 4am on Monday, 21 March, unknown people broke into Alpine Mowers on Main Road, Monbulk.

Det Sgt Woods said the thieves triggered an alarm and fled the scene, but made off with “a quantity of chainsaws”, and that police were asking anyone with information to come forward.

“If anyone is offered to purchase any cheap, new chainsaws, then we’d obviously love to hear from them,” she said.

A light-coloured Holden Commodore was allegedly seen leaving the area after the burglary.

Burglar busted A WANTIRNA man will face court for three burglaries in Lilydale, after being busted by Yarra Ranges police on Wednesday.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant, Melanie Woods, said that on Wednesday, 23 March, police arrested a 25-year-old Wantirna man.

The man was arrested after three burglaries that occurred on Monday 21 and Tuesday 22 March.

Det Sgt Woods said the man is believed to have tried to steal a car from the owner of one of the properties, who confronted the man.

Police then located the alleged offender, arresting and charging him for the three burglaries.

He will appear at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court at a later date.

Attempted breakin POLICE are calling for witnesses after a break-in and attempted theft from JB Hi-Fi in Chirnside Park on Wednesday morning.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant, Melanie Woods, said that at 1.50am on Wednesday, 23 March, four men forced their way into the Maroondah Highway store and attempted to steal electronic goods.

Det Sgt Woods said the men tried to steal electronics, phones and tablet computers, but were unsuccessful.

“However, we have concerns that they may reoffend,” she said.

Asphalt works are planned for the car park from Monday, 11 April, until Friday, 15 April.

The popular 1000 Steps walk will remain open to the public during the works, which will include repairs to potholes, asphalting and new line-marking.

Parks Victoria Area Chief Ranger, Matt Hoogland, said the works were much-needed.

“The works to repair potholes and refresh line marking in the car park are crucial for ensuring safe pedestrian and vehicle access for more than half a million visi-

tors who attempt the 1000 Steps each year,” he said.

“The temporary closure of the car park will disrupt access to the 1000 Steps.

“However, the 1000 Steps will remain open during the works.

“We strongly encourage visitors to use public transport or there is limited parking at One Tree Hill.”

Mr Hoogland said pedestrian access through the car park would be maintained for people using public transport and the One Tree Hill car park was located at the top of the 1000 Steps.

He thanked the public for their understanding while the works were taking place.

“Given the popularity of the 1000 Steps, there is no good time

to do these essential works,” he said.

“However, the works have been timed to minimise disruptions to the public as much as possible.”

Mr Hoogland reminded the public there are other great nearby parks in the area, such as the National Rhododendron Gardens, Silvan Reservoir, George Tindale Gardens, R.J. Hamer Aboretum and the Pirianda Gardens.

“These parks not only offer a change of scenery but they are also quite spectacular at this time of year, as the gardens begin to transition into their autumn colours,” he said.

By PETER DOUGLAS A GOLD medal dream at this year’s Rio Paralympics is another step closer for Macclesfield super mum Amanda Reynolds.

After she “smashed” her personal best times - and her opposition - at the recent National Championships in Perth, the paracanoeist’s performances will likely see her realise a long-held ambition to represent Australia at the Games.

Reynolds, whose home club is the Sherbrooke Knox Canoe Club, finished first in the (K1 200) KL3 at Champion Lakes, Perth - also winning this class at the Oceania Championships in South Australia earlier this year.

These feats followed her gold medal performance at the 2015 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships in Milan, Italy.

The Rio 2016 Paralympics will be held in September this year and Reynolds said she can’t wait.

“Representing your country is the pinnacle of any sport,” she said.

“It’s what we all work towards, to wear the Australian colours and do everyone proud.”

Spurring her on during her journey is her husband Wayne and sons Tyler and Broc, who have played an integral part in her bid for Rio. “I’m just so grateful for the sacrifices they’ve made so I can do what I do,” she said.

By PETER DOUGLAS FIFTY-THREE trees will be removed from road reserves within the Selby and Belgrave areas to enable the installation of sewerage systems.

At its 22 March meeting, Yarra Ranges Council passed a recommendation to allow the removal of the trees for the continuation of the Belgrave and Selby Sewerage scheme, which had been halted due to hard ground conditions.

Rock formations in the area had stopped the trenchless techniques that had been proposed.

The streets targeted for vegetation removal in the area include Park Drive, Arbor Avenue, Waratah Avenue, Maple Avenue, Cedar Grove, Currajong Avenue, Beech Avenue, Montana Grove, Maskell Hill Road and Banyalla Court.

Five objections were submitted over the proposal, with the proposal also failing to gain support from Cr Len Cox, who said more could be done to save the trees.

“Under no circumstances could I vote for this.”

However, councillors Mike Clarke and Jim Child said the works needed to go ahead.

Cr Clarke said the original proposal was no longer viable.

“I’m the last person you’d expect to be supporting the removal of the trees, but they (South East Water) feel they’ve done their due diligence,” Cr Clarke said.

“In conversations with them, the drill has stopped dead when it hit the rock, this is a diamond-tipped drill that’s burnt out in an hour.”

Subsequently, she had lived with depression, chronic pain and an addiction to prescription drugs.

The mother of two made the decision to undergo elective surgery in 2012 to amputate the lower part of her right leg.

Reynolds’ journey into the sport first started after, on a whim, completing the gruelling Murray Marathon with her friend.

Not long after, it was suggested she try flat-water sprinting and the rest is history.

She later earned a Victorian Institute of Sport scholarship, which offered her invaluable access to elite coaches, sports therapists and nutritionists.

While Reynolds once trained at Auravale and Patterson Lakes, she now trains at elite facilities in the Gold Coast.

The Mail first followed her progress in 2014, when the Paralympics was a far-away dream.

At the time, Reynolds said “getting to where I am now is really surreal”.

“I’ve now got two years to go before Rio and my main goal is to get my times down,” she said.

“This has been a real group effort, it’s not just me doing it on my own, it’s everyone around me that is what’s getting me to where I am.”

Kelpie ill from bait

LINDA Williams of Wandin North believes her dog was deliberately poisoned two weeks ago, when she came home to find her kelpie Dante in a distressed state.

“I took him to my vet and they said it may be related to his ongoing skin problem,” she said.

“Two days later we rushed him to Blackburn emergency vet where they had to keep him and give him dialysis.

“Luckily we caught it in time - it could have been bad.”

Ms Williams said the vets confirmed Dante had swallowed a chemical-based poison.

“He was in our yard all day so he couldn’t have eaten fox bait,” Ms Williams said.

A few days before Dante was poisoned, Ms Williams said she had received an anonymous letter telling her to stop her dog from barking.

“There are lots of dogs in the area and when one starts barking they all start.”

Dante is still recovering two weeks after being discharged from the vet and has developed a limp from the poison causing internal bleeding in his spinal cord.

“It has seriously damaged his back legs and the vet told me it could be permanent or over time he could recover full movement depending on his rehabilitation.”

Veterinary Clinic and Animal Hospital, Nick Ogden, said it was important people knew what signs to look for if they thought their dog had been poisoned.

“The main things to look for is if they are showing any seizures or sudden development of vomiting or diarrhoea,” he said.

“More subtle signs would be them becoming unwell, not just themselves, and behaving generally unwell.”

Dr Ogden said it was important for both owners and pets to try to remain calm until the pet could be taken to the vet where they could get professional treatment.

“What we need to do is get as much out as we can,” he said.

“This may mean a procedure of washing out the stomach or an enema to wash out any poison that remains is stomach or intestines, then try to flush the body out.

“Your pet may be on IV drip to flush out their blood and in some cases there may be an antidote. It’s more trying to minimise absorption and get the poison out of the body.”

Ms Williams said she was very upset by the whole situation and it had also cost her dearly.

“I have paid over $5500 in vet bills because of this baiting - I don’t know how much others are paying but it’s very costly.

“I just don’t understand how someone can be so evil.”

WHEN the battle over the so-called ‘safe schools coalition’ is between parents and Marxist activists, most of whom don’t have children, (Victorian Premier) Mr (Daniel) Andrews and (Victorian Deputy Premier) Mr (James) Merlino side with the activists rather than the parents - how pathetic.

They apparently care so little for the children of this state, even their own, that they want to continue to run a school program which is not about stopping bullying, but designed to promote sexual and gender ‘diversity’, which in reality simply confuses the minds of vulnerable 12-year-olds.

Monbulk Massive Plant Sale Firstly, preparations for the Monbulk Recreation Reserve Development Group’s massive plant sale are now underway, with the event aiming to raise funds towards a new community pavilion.

Rhododendron Gardens fun day Parks Victoria is inviting families and children of all ages to the annual Free Family Fun Day at the National Rhododendron Gardens from10am to 3pm on Tuesday, 5 April, 2016.

The National Rhododendron Gardens is a unique ornamental garden featuring a rare collection of exotic plants surrounded by a stunning mountain ash forest.

Parks Victoria Area Chief Ranger, Rebecca Carland, said it’s a great day out.

“The Family Fun Day at the National Rhododendron Gardens is a great and inexpensive school holiday outing for the family,” she said.

“It will feature Andy’s Antics, Stax the Didgeman workshop, BirdLife Australia, Platypus Education Group and lots of hands-on activities for children.

“There will be lots lot of fun, creative and educational activities for kids to engage in and it’s a great opportunity to immerse you in the sounds of the local bird life and the spectacular autumn colours of the National Rhododendron Gardens.”

Friends of Tindale Memorial Gardens The annual autumn plant sale will be held at George Tindale Memorial Gardens on Saturday, 9 April.

All funds raised will be used to assist with ongoing improvements to the garden.

Guests are invited for a ‘photo-walk’, where you can bring your camera and enjoy the resplendent autumn colours.

Songs of soul, with a purpose THE Performing And Visual Arts in Emerald (PAVE) Festival runs from 10-17 April in venues throughout Emerald.

The Emerald FunFest kicks off a week of festivities as the gateway event to the annual PAVE Festival.

This year’s FunFest is on Sunday, 10 April, from 10am to 4pm, and once again the day is jampacked with free activities and events.

Featured are five stages with continuous music for all ages and tastes, dance and theatre per-

formances, a circus tent with stories and magic tricks, craft activities, street performances, popup surprises, quality art and craft stalls, an international food court, community stalls, carnival rides, displays, competitions and presentations.

A rare new performance

By JESSE GRAHAM A SPOKEN-word performance about the final days of the Tasmanian Tiger will grace stages in Healesville and Upwey in April, exploring present and past themes of extinction and gender equality in Australia.

They Saw a Thylacine is a play that tells two stories - one, of a Thylacine (Tasmanian Tiger) tracker, played by Sarah Hamilton; the other, about a zoo-keeper’s daughter, played by Justine Campbell.

The show is set in 1936, shortly before the world’s last known Tasmanian Tiger, a female named Benjamin, died in captivity at Beaumaris Zoo. Ms Hamilton said Ms Campbell’s character is based on Alison Reid, who was trained by her father to run the zoo, but the board of management would not allow her to take over her father’s post, due to her being a woman.

“That actually had a big impact on the last Thylacine,” Ms Hamilton said.

“They said to her, ‘We won’t pay you to run the zoo, but you can keep living in the curator’s cottage,’ which was just outside of the zoo, ‘And in return, you have to give us your services whenever required’.”

But Reid never received keys to the zoo, and though she could hear Benjamin calling at night, she was unable to help the animal, which died of exposure on a cold night.

Picture: CONTRIBUTED Meanwhile, Ms Hamilton said her character, Beatie, who is trying to find and capture a live Thylacine to sell to the zoo, is based on stories told by Tasmanians while the play was being researched.

She said the play explored extinction and gender equality - issues still

important to this day, with the former being a focus of the work at Healesville Sanctuary.

“I think this story is all too contemporary, because we have so many species on the brink of extinction at the moment,” Ms Hamilton said.

“They (Healesville Sanctuary) have a great breeding program for the Tassie devils, but the devils are all but gone in the wild now.

“We wear clothes that are contemporary in the show - we don’t wear period pieces ... we keep it in the hereand-now, because the issues are very relevant.”

Though the show contains other characters, every part is performed by Ms Hamilton and Ms Campbell, in a spoken-word format.

They Saw a Thylacine will be performed at Upwey’s Burrinja Cultural Centre on Thursday 14 April, and at Healesville’s Memo Hall on Friday 15 April.

Tickets are $36, or $32 for concession holders, with a $28 ticket price for groups of more than six.

Without hyperbole, Zootopia is almost perfect.

Every major character (but especially Judy and Nick) is irrepressibly likeable and has remarkable depth. The plot features an engrossing mystery beyond Judy and Nick’s endearing buddy-cop relationship, and Judy’s arc, in which she proves herself against extreme

disapproval, is immensely gratifying.

Despite its fanciful setting, Zootopia is a fun and poignant allegory for our own world, as it gracefully addresses issues of following your dreams, rising above social expectations, the effect of fear and the commonplace nature of prejudice.

Zootopia has some dark and genuinely frightening moments, but is still a vital film for children of all ages. With its anti-racism message of tolerance and inclusion, the film may take some of the wind out of Trump’s campaign sails.

It’s rare to find a children’s film - heck, a major studio release of any kind - that is so intelligent, moving and nuanced.

Speaking for myself, Zootopia is my favourite film of the year so far.

TWO groups of demonstrators took to the streets on Belgrave last week to voice their opinions on the Safe Schools Program.

The Australian Christians Party marched to the office Victorian Education Minister James Merlino in Belgrave on Wednesday 16 March to submit a petition against the Safe Schools Program.

The Australian Christians Victorian Senate candidate Vickie Janson said the rally went well and she was happy with the turnout.

'For mid-week in Belgrave, 150 people turning up for our march is pretty good,' she said.

Mr Merlino's office estimates the turnout at closer to 50 people in the group who were marching against the program along Burwood Highway in Belgrave.

In preparation for the Australian Christians' anti-Safe Schools rally, local action group 'Safe in Belgrave' decorated the township in rainbow colours.

Traders along the main thoroughfare of Belgrave decorated their shop fronts with rainbow flags, 'Safe in Belgrave' posters, and one kilometre of rainbow bunting.

Local bar Sooki Lounge, located across the road from Mr Merlino's office, had a 7.5 metre wide 'Safe in Belgrave' banner on their roof and played music such as YMCA, It's Raining Men and Dancing Queen as the Australian Christians delivered their petition.

The music and festivities reportedly caused many observers and passers-by to break out in song and dance.

'We hope that our anti-Safe Schools guests enjoyed their trip to Belgrave, and were able to see firsthand how much of an inclusive, vibrant, diverse and joyous community we are,' representatives of Safe in Belgrave said in a statement.

Ms Janson said the rainbow decorations were not a deterrent to the group for the most part and both the anti and pro safe schools groups were respectful of each other.

'They had a big banner above the stage area we had to take down and hand back but it was all very well behaved and we got on well.'

The Safe in Belgrave team then held their community gathering in support of the Safe Schools program and creating safe communities for LGTBQI people on Saturday 19 March.

Despite the wet weather, hundreds of people came out to the Belgrave Town Centre to show their support for the inclusive nature of the hills community.

Mr Merlino confirmed there was no violence or hostility at either of the demonstrations which he was very pleased about.

'I am very proud of how Belgrave community has come together to show its support for the Safe Schools Coalition,' he said.

'We know how vital the Safe Schools program is, and we're

hearing it loud and clear from kids and parents, uncles and aunties, teachers and principals, all across Victoria.

'Saturday's rally will send a clear message - when kids' lives are at risk, we won't walk away.'

Federal Opposition Leader Bill Shorten also extended a message of support to the team at Safe in Belgrave, expressing his support for the actions of the group.

'I commend the dynamic community of Belgrave and surrounds for their efforts this week and congratulate those who stood up for the health safety and wellbeing of our children,' Mr Shorten said.

'Discrimination against LGBTI Australians is wrong in all its forms. Yet 80 per cent of Australian same-sex attracted and transgender students face verbal abuse and bullying at school.

'The Safe Schools program protects and supports these students, which is why I stand by this program and the Australian Labor party will always support the LGBTI community.

Hands-on health touch TECOMA Primary School students recently received a unique insight into the Angliss Hospital.

Grades 1 and 2 students visited the hospital on Friday 18 March and were involved in numerous activities.

These included finding out how X-rays worked, testing their oxygen levels on pulse oximeters and even trying on surgical face masks and hats.

The students also found out from dietitians the value of healthy eating and also learnt the basics of physiotherapy.

Chief of Clinical and Site Operations Ben Kelly said Angliss Hospital was delighted to host the students.

“Angliss Hospital is a big part of the local community, and the pupils got great value

MANY up-and-coming junior footballers from around the Yarra Ranges have been rewarded for their hard work, with Eastern Ranges recently announcing its Under 18s squad for 2016.

The Ranges enjoyed an outstanding season last year, losing the grand final by just 12 points to Oakleigh Chargers.

The squad offers a pathway towards becoming drafted into the AFL system, as well as a chance to hone their skills within an elite environment.

The opportunity will also grant them access to mentors to help guide them through the competitive environment.

Some of the present-day stars to come out of the Eastern Ranges system include Collingwood forward Travis Cloke and Greater Western Sydney’s first pick of 2011, Jonathon Patton.

Included in this year’s squad is a strong contingent of junior talents from both the Yarra Valley Mountain District Football League and the Eastern Football League, who will be vying for game-time.

Once again, it was the young tyro Broc Reynolds who won the day with 38 points, but not before he withstood the minute scrutiny of a countback.

His was the best last nine holes so he was given the nod over Dave Mackey (22) and Peter Clowes (18) who both carded 38 points.

Mackey was given the countback nod over Clowes so he took out the B Grade gong so Clowes was the two to nil down.

Dennis Fuller (17), Peter Glasscock (14) and John Keys (21) all managed 37 to feel that unrequited warm fuzzy but no cigar.

Glasscock was nearest the pin on the 4th and 13th, Ian Cranston on the 7th, Mike Litchfield the 12th and once again, Clowes took away the pro pin dollars on the 18th.

Petunia Jones was the absolute star in the ladies’ event and the only one to get with a bull’s roar of her was Daisy Aitken and even then she was a long way back.

Wednesday’s Opulently Foppish Golf (OFG) was a stroke event comprising two times around the Heritage nine holes.

Geoff Whittaker jumped at this chance with both hands and with clubs flailing went on to win running away with a nett 63.

Mike Litchfield scored 68, Ken Sumsion 69 and a waddle of golfers, including Dennis Fuller, Philip Crossley and John Carvill, all scored 70.

Motoring A piece of Wolf Creek

By KATH GANNAWAY EMMA Hall has a lot of memories tied up in the HG Holden Premier that she has transformed into her own little piece of Wolf Creek in Woori Yallock.

It’s not all about the Australian drama/horror film either.

The 40-year-old Woori Yallock mother of five has fond memories of driving around in her dad’s old XR Ford, nights out at the drive-ins with her brother and her in pyjamas in the back seat, and those shiny vinyl seats that you could fry an egg on on a hot day.

“You’d get branded by the seatbelt buckle and have to peel yourself off the seat if you didn’t position your beach towel exactly right,” she said with great affection for the breed.

Keith - named after Keith Richards, another old classic who just keeps going, is her ‘for me’ project.

In fact, over time, it’s become a family project with Emma’s three sons and two daughters, although a little embarrassed to be seen in Keith at first, sharing a lot of quality time in the workshop.

Emma purchased the car as a backyard find, for very little money, but with huge potential.

It was never her intention to restore Keith - how could you?

“I wanted to create an old workhorse, outback theme which would invoke a lot of memories - the sort of thing you would see if you were travelling in the middle of the outback,” she said.

It had 800,000ks on the clock and was a mess when she took it on.

“The first thing I did was rip out the old carpet and clean it up, which

took about three months.

“I had no idea if the motor was even going to run but with clean fuel and a service, it kicked over on the first turn of the key.”

That was a sweet moment.

Turning Keith into a replica of the infamous Wolf Creek car required imagination, a handy paint product that gives the rust effect that most people want to get rid of, and a lot of hard work in the workshop.

Car parts in the dishwasher and panels in the bathtub are nothing unusual in the Hall household.

The props, including barbed wire around the number plates and the odd body part hanging from the window, and blood and a bit of hair in the grille, are all part of the macabre illusion.

Although she was reluctant at first to take Keith along to car shows, she discovered that grunge was as popular as shiny chrome with car enthusiasts.

“I was absolutely floored by the response,” Emma said.

“There is never a moment when someone is not prodding it, remarking on it and wanting to know more about the car and how it has come together.

“I hope it’s inspiring others who don’t have a lot of money to spend on a car to go down the road of just capturing the car at its stage in life, admit it’s an old car and it’s not perfect,” she said.

She calls it ‘imperfect perfection’.

Was it a mid-life crisis fix?

“No ... that would be buying a V8,” she says, laughing.

But, it was definitely a stage of life project.

“Obviously raising five kids, you’re always busy but you find as they are getting older and more independent their needs and wants are a lot less and you have time to do something for yourself.”

Keith has become part of a much bigger picture for Emma, who is also part of a movie car group which stages runs and shows to raise money for various causes and also featured in a 10th anniversary Wolf Creek promotion at a picture theatre.

Emma has a message for any ‘girls’ out there who are thinking

about joining what used to be a male domain - car restoration and transformation.

“Don’t let anything stop you,” she says.

“This is not a male-oriented thing any more and anyone can do it.

“Give it a go and you will be amazed at what you can come up with, and just how much fun it can be.”

Safety’s not an option VICTORIA Police has a new tool to promote safety on Victoria’s roads.

The new Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe, codenamed Guardian, unveiled recently will be used as both an operational highway patrol car and to promote in-car safety features at exhibits across the state over the next 12 months.

Assistant Commissioner Doug Fryer said it was important for people to consider buying the safest car they could afford when the time came to purchase a new vehicle.

“Death and serious injuries on Victorian roads could be reduced by a third overnight if everyone was driving the safest cars they could afford,” he said.

“We’re not saying that everyone needs to rush out and buy the latest and greatest but we need people to prioritise safety over leather seats and shiny wheels.

“Your car should be a guardian for your safety, and the safety of your family, much like police are a guardian for everyone in the community.”

He said the long-term vision of zero deaths and serious injuries on Victoria’s roads would only be achieved through a combination of safer roads, safer people, safer speeds and safer vehicles.

“Reducing the number of lives needlessly lost on our roads requires a whole of community effort, Assistant Commissioner Fryer said.

“Police have a responsibility to do more than just catch unsafe drivers and we can do this by promoting safer vehicles and encouraging business to play its part.

“We know about half of all used cars in Victoria are former fleet vehicles, so if businesses ensure they’re leasing and purchasing the safest vehicles, the benefits will flow on to their fellow Victorians.

“Safety should never be an optional extra and the car industry has a corporate responsibility to make safety technology standard in all new cars.”
