Autumn colours to inspire WELCOME to another beautiful autumn in the Yarra Ranges. If you’re lucky enough to either live locally, or simply pop in from time to time, the highlight of the beautiful Yarra Ranges in autumn is clearly, well ... take a look around ... it’s the countless inspiring landscapes. Wherever you look, whether it be in the Hills or the Valley, the scenery dominates the experience of the region. Who among us doesn’t enjoy watching the changing colours during this magical season, as the endless green paddocks, the lines of soaring trees and the inspiring hills enjoy a burst of autumn colour. Sounds pretty amazing, doesn’t it. To help you make the most of this autumn experience, we here at Tourist News have prepared another edition packed full of suggestions for you to explore. To start off, we have featured a story about the revival of caravanning in Australia and how the Yarra Ranges fits into the scene. Keeping with the outdoors theme, we’ve got hiking covered, as well as popular picnic spots. Don’t forget the more adventurous options, including water sports such as sailing, kayaking and canoeing. But given the diversity of activities available in the region, it would be remiss to ignore the sublime culture of the region, including the wineries and festivals that are so prevalent. As per usual, we’ve asked the experts, too. This time, we’ve interviewed those in the know to ask them about their favourite hot-spots and the secret gems that are scattered about the region. So, whatever your passion, get out there and enjoy all that is on offer in the Yarra Ranges. Peter Douglas Editor

Ferny Creek textile artist Joni Cornell has captured the amazing colours of the region’s Autumn splendour in her work. The tastiest stop in Toolangi By KATH GANNAWAY SOME things change ... some things stay the same. At Toolangi Tavern, they are embracing that old adage. The change at Toolangi Tavern has come with new owners, the Pearce family – Michael and Camilla and daughters Kate and Anna. The family took over the popular Tavern just before Christmas and have brought with them some new ideas and a fresh outlook on providing a great experience for visitors and locals. The “same” is two-fold. Staff members, such as manager Angela Wilbourne, who are part and parcel of the Tavern; and, of course, the magnificent location, surrounded by the magnificent Toolangi State Forest. Angela describes the Tavern as: “A little hidden secret, but one that is very busy”. Like any secret, it’s not a secret any more once a couple of people know about it, and it’s fair to say it has a well-established reputation for its food, atmosphere and beautiful setting. In addition to the main dining/lounge, there is a delightful tea garden and the spacious deck which looks out to those views. When the temperature starts to chill off, which can happen in autumn, you’ll find a blazing log fire in the lounge to create a warm welcome. Call in on any day of the week and you will find an enticing menu, with a weekly specials board to add variety along with a selection of Yarra Valley wines. Angela said there have been some exciting changes to the menu with chef Michael in the kitchen, but they have kept a lot of their popular classics. Special days include Parma Monday with a choice of five parmas at $15. The only dilemma will be which one! Tuesdays pay tribute to the 250gm porterhouse steak for $15 and on Thursdays, locals get a very generous 20 per cent off the entire bill.

T

Define ‘local’? Well, Angela said it’s more a ‘neighbourhood’ thing Toolangi, Healesville and Kinglake residents all qualify. They’re friendly folk at Toolangi Tavern, so if you’re a visitor just mention Toolangi’s most famous ‘local’ – C.J. Dennis – and they’ll treat you like a local. Particular dietary requirements are not problem with the majority of the menu able to be re-interpreted as gluten-free, and Michael very happy to create something delicious for vegan diners. Just a short drive from Healesville or Yarra The Tavern Glen, Toolangi is a world away from the has a wellusual tourist townships, and the Tavern established the perfect place to meet, eat and reputation for soak up the atmosphere. its food and Toolangi Tavern is at 1390 Myers atmosphere. BUxton

5

REASONS

TO VISIT BUXTON By talin hadrow

1 Igloo Road House, The Buxton Burger Have you ever cruised through Buxton and noticed that quaint little road house next to the petrol station on the Maroondah Highway? Did you keep driving? If you kept driving, that would be one major mistake. Because sitting in this Igloo Road House is the legendary Buxton Burger. If you have gone in and devoured one (or maybe two) of the selection of heavenly burgers that Igloo produce, then kudos to you. The famous Buxton Burger is almost synonymous with the town. Energise yourself for the Black Spur road ahead, or challenge yourself to eat the 20cm high Cathedral Burger. Whatever your reason, make sure you treat your taste buds to the best burger around town.

Buxton Ridge Winery

Mountain Biking

Buxton Ridge Winery, situated 1km from Maroondah Highway on Seal Rock Road, is the perfect relaxation spot for weekend wanderers or those looking for quality local wine. The family owned, award-winning winery supplies free wine tastings, with wine from their own vineyard and plates of local produce. Take a leisurely stroll through the grounds and absorb the stunning scenic views Buxton has to offer.

2

Black Range Park is ideal for the mountain bike go-getters. Zip along the manmade bike paths, with trails ranging from easy to very difficult, depending on your level of speed demon. Tackle the jumps and climbing trails and ride over creeks, all the while taking in the budding forest as it regrows after the Black Saturday bushfires. Feeling competitive? Keep an eye out for the 2016 Buxton Bootcamp mountain bike race, headlining in November.

Buxton Trout and Salmon Farm Catch your fish and eat it, too! The Trout and Salmon Farm is great fun for the whole family. Wander from pond to pond through the gum trees and choose where to cast your line. The farm offers to clean your catch; and provides barbecues situated on the property, so don’t forget to bring your grilling skills and gear. A handy alternative is heading down to the local pub where they’ll cook your fish for you for a small fee. Located just off Maroondah Highway, it is the ideal fishing location and place to make a day of it.

5

Bucky Pub The local Buxton ‘Bucky’ pub is situated in the heart of Buxton, with travellers stopping in for a refreshing brew and a tasty meal, with the option of staying in a cosy ‘Bucky Bed’ in the motel. Bring your freshly caught fish from the Trout and Salmon Farm for the kitchen to cook-up.

More than meets the eye By JESSE GRAHAM A STORE showcasing the best Turkish wares in the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges has more than what meets the eye, with designer labels and gorgeous homewares to browse After opening its doors in Olinda eight years ago, the shop branched out to Healesville, stocking all the treasures that Turkey has to offer, including rugs, cushions, ceramics, jewellery, leather goods and gorgeous mosaic lights to decorate any home. Owner Ibrahim Durmus said the best attraction of the business was the range of stock each store carried, along with the experience that comes with being immersed in Turkish culture. “We are able to offer products that people that have travelled to Turkey may not have seen – things like our leather bags and leather goods,” he said. “All our staff have many years of experience in retail, are well informed about Turkish culture, and have a real passion for the things we sell.” “We all have a great relationship with our customers, many of them regulars from the first day Treasures of Istanbul opened.” Mr Durmus said that interstate and international visitors often returned to the shop to pick up items, and that the shop now stocked an “extensive” range of handmade rugs. He said many of the items featured at Treasures of Istanbul had been featured in home and interior design magazines, and that the “rich” colours and textures were “very popular” with people renovating or redecorating. Healesville’s store is located at 200 Maroondah Highway, and is open from 10am-4pm Monday to Friday, and 10am-5pm Saturdays and Sundays. Call 5962 6942 for more information. Olinda’s store is located at 6 Parsons Lane, and is open from 10.30am-5pm, seven days a week. Call 9751 1406 for more information.

At Treasures of Istanbul, we’re all about importing the finest products - direct from Turkey - that embrace our love of beautifully crafted things. Whether it’s a hand-woven rug, a beautiful silk pashmina, or a unique piece of jewellery, we strive to market pieces that you will just fall in love with. We love working with customers to ensure their purchase perfectly fits their needs, so feel free to come visit us in our Olinda and Healesville stores – we’re open 7 days a week. PICNIC SPOTS

Picnic time in hills By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS THE Dandenongs and Yarra Valley is home to several idyllic picnic sites. Upper Yarra Reservoir Park Located in the upper section of the Yarra Ranges is the mighty Upper Yarra Reservoir. It is the upper most accessible point of the Yarra River and an absolutely beautiful lunch spot that is well worth the drive. There are amazing views to be taken in of the reservoir itself and the surrounding landscape. A popular picnic spot, but rarely crowded due it its location, the Upper Yarra Reservoir offers wood barbecues, hot water facilities and the wet weather hall provides coverage, so picnicking is available in all weather. Just outside the peaceful small town of Reefton, the Upper Yarra Reservoir is an hour drive from Healesville through the spectacular Yarra Ranges National Park, taking in townships such as Warburton and Yarra Junction along the way. One Tree Hill Picnic Ground Despite having many, many trees these days, One Tree Hill Picnic ground retains the name given to it after the surrounding forest was cleared in the 1860s. The now leafy and large picnic area is set at a prime viewing position above the infamous 1000 Steps Kokoda Track Memorial Trail (don’t worry, you don’t have to hike to get to the picnic area). With glimpses of a city view to be had between the trees, One Tree Hill offers a retreat that feels like a complete escape. Equipped with amenities such as toilets, electric barbecues, shelters, and a pavilion,

McKenzie Reserve Nested in the heart of the historic Yarra Glen Township, McKenzie Reserve boasts rolling laws for any size picnic with established native and exotic trees and an award winning adventure playground. With a huge variety of activities for all ages, the playground is suitable for all ages and abilities. With toilets, barbecues, picnic tables, lawn areas, and shade areas, McKenzie Reserve has all the amenities you need for a great day out, picnicking with the whole family. Also with the convenience of being in the Yarra Glen town, you can really go all out with fresh, local produce available at the many shops and stores in town. Birdsland Reserve Birdsland Reserve is huge, covering 75 hectares of prime bush preservation, but it can be tricky to find. Located in Belgrave South, Birdsland reserve is accessible down a dirt road that branches from Mount Morton Road in the back part of the Belgrave South suburb. There is a reason the park is set back from the roads, boasting over 130 different native birds identified in the reserve including the wedgetail eagle and powerful owl and supporting over 200 species of native plants, the reserve is an ecological wonderland. Birdsland reserve also has barbecues, picnic tables and lakes for visitors to enjoy and walking tracks to help digest even the most heavy of picnic foods.

All aboard and around town

BETWEEN winery tours, concerts and getting from town-to-town, one of the pitfalls of the Yarra Valley is getting around easily. Driving means visiting places easily but makes having more than one glass of wine difficult - and when there are so many vineyards and places to explore, often the best answer is to get a lift. That’s where the Get Around Minibus comes in. Run by Jody Hodson, the minibus carts residents and visitors around Healesville for fares starting at $10 per person at all hours of every day. Ms Hodson said the idea for the minibus came as an answer to a lack of taxi services in town in late 2014, and had been embraced by the community since the get-go. “It’s been absolutely fantastic, the whole time, right from the word ‘go’, everybody’s basically been very grateful to be able to go home at the end of the day,” she said.

Since then, Ms Hodson has added a second bus to the fleet, and runs services further out than Healesville, such as to Lilydale, Yarra Glen and even Ringwood – as long as it’s booked ahead. The Get Around Minibus now also offers winery tours, wedding transport and even transport to events such as A Day on the Green. “There’s a lot of potential for it to grow into other areas as well – Warburton way and Eltham, just taking it a step at a time,” she said. She said her focus was on providing friendly, reliable transport and filling the gap in services for those who were trying to get to and from events or venues. The minibuses each seat 11 passengers and passengers are able to book their trip ahead. For more information, visit www.thegetaroundminibus.com.au, phone 0437 033 133 or email jody@thegetaroundminibus.com.au.

OPEN GARDENS

Spectacular garden offers variety By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS THE Dandenong Ranges is world famous for its amazing variety of native and introduced plant wildlife. A wonderland for green thumbs and green life enthusiasts alike, the Dandenongs have a wealth of both wild and controlled gardens for visitors to enjoy. Both native and introduced species of plants are well represented and on display in the Alfred Nicholas Memorial Gardens in Sherbrooke and the Karwarra Australian Plant Garden in Kalorama. The Alfred Nicholas Memorial Gardens were named after the original owner of the gardens and nearby property Burnham Beeches.

Designed and maintained originally by head gardener Percival Trevaskis, the garden contains rockeries, pools, waterfalls, and an ornamental lake. Autumn is a spectacular time to visit the Arthur Nicholas Gardens as the international deciduous trees display their magnificent shades of golden foliage. If native trees are more your style, the Karwarra Australian Native Plant Garden makes a perfect place to visit in the temperate autumn weather. With over 1400 native species of plants, Karwarra is one of few gardens with exclusively native plants on display. Each section of the garden is as beautiful as it is educational with designs to show how plants can be used as part of a landscaping plan to achieve the most benefit for home gardens. These native plants offer a variety of colours, shapes, sizes and perfumes all throughout the year and autumn is no exception.

CARAVANNING

Rediscovering the great By PETER DOUGLAS GETAWAYS in a caravan seem to be no longer the domain of grey nomads. In fact, data suggests it could even be ‘cool’ again, enjoying a revival from its peak in the 1970s. Tourism Research Australia in January revealed the 35 to 44-years age group is among the most avid caravanning enthusiasts, suggesting it is not just the domain of baby boomers. So, where are the top spots in the Yarra Ranges area, you ask. One of the finest locations in the area includes the Warburton Holiday Park, with park co-owner Simon Edwards agreeing there is a renaissance at present. “My generation, now in their forties with their own families, are rediscovering the joys of caravanning,” he said. “Caravanning boomed in the 1970s but declined a little, it’s now definitely enjoying an upswing in trend.” Mr Edwards also pointed to independent research from the Victorian Caravan Parks Association, which showed the ageing demographic of the baby boomers were getting out and travelling more. Mr Edwards and the park’s co-owner David Pratt settled on the park’s purchase in early December, after previously owning a caravan park together in Bright. The park is being rebranded the Warburton Holiday Park and they will complete many renovations soon. This will include a new reception area, new amenities (including laundry and recreation room), as well as more cabins and general improvements. Mr Edwards said the Yarra Ranges is a springboard to many activities, day trips and wineries, bushwalks and other hidden gems. “In summer, floating on lilos seems to be an institution in Warburton,” he said.

escape

As Mr Edwards noted, relaxation seems to be encouraged in the region, from dawn until dusk. Perhaps it’s the host of family friendly attractions that encourage this type of leisurely pace. Whether it’s the TarraWarra Museum of Art in Healesville, to the Healesville Sanctuary, hot air balloon rides over the Valley, or the many walks in the Dandenong Ranges – there are endless adventures to be enjoyed. No matter your pastime desires, often it’s about spending time together with the kids in the holiday park. What more could you ask for than a caravanning adventure in the Yarra Ranges.

There is plenty to see and do at the Warburton Holiday Park.

WINERIES Wine Yarra Valley CEO Richard Howden. Picture: ROB CAREW

Here’s to the fruit of the vine By JESSE GRAHAM THERE always seems to be a problem with drinking red wine in summer. When the weather starts to edge towards the 40s, and staying in the 20s overnight, drinking room-temperature wine just doesn’t sit right. In autumn, as the weather cools down, it’s the perfect in-between temperature to have both white and red wines, and check out what the valley has on offer (without working up a sweat doing so).

“plenty” of activity around the Yarra Valley for winemakers, with new releases hitting the market and cellar doors opening for tourists for the leafy season. “Looking at some of the chardonnays and pinots ... it’s a good time, I think, for wines such as that,” Mr Howden said.

It’s very approachable, yet quite complex wines, in that lighter sort of style... “It’s always good to get out to cellar doors and see who’s got what.” Mr Howden said the Yarra Valley, being in a cool-climate area, was a great place for chardonnays and pinot noirs. “Pinot is a lighter, more perfumed, delicate-style wine,” he said. “It’s very approachable, yet quite complex wines, in that lighter sort of style. “Whereas your shiraz is a more full-bodied style red wine, with more spicy, peppery sort of tones, with a bit more tannins.” Chardonnay, meanwhile, differs greatly by its maker, but usually features more fruit characters, and has “a little more body” than lighter whites like sauvignon blanc or pinot gris. Len Rayner's passion for extraordinary fruit is contagious. Pictures: KATH GANNAWAY

Pick a perfect day out By KATH GANNAWAY Things are fruity at Rayners orchard in Yarra Junction. Orchardist Len Rayner found his inner-entrepreneur a few years back when he saw that the future for smaller-scale orchardists was not in selling fruit wholesale but in offering a range of diverse experiences that re-connect people, local and visitors, to where their food comes from, and the many delights it has to offer. Rayners grows and sells more than 450 varieties of fruit, year round, make delicious products with fresh fruit from the trees, run tractor tasting adventure tours and the tastalicious Peach Cafe. Autumn is a great time to be a little adventurous when it comes to fruit with some of the more unusual fruits in season and the bonus of some stunning autumn colour in the groves. Its one-hour tractor fruit tasting adventures run every day of the year and are a joy to the tastebuds. Visitors can sample up to 10 different varieties of fruit every day of the year so they should be sure to arrive hungry. Len describes Pepino as starting off with a cucumber/rockmelon flavour with the rockmelon flavours developing as it ripens. Yum! Rayners will have lots of fresh sunflower seeds this autumn, available as heads or just seeds. Yellow-strawberry and Chilean guavas, Dutch medlar, tamarillo, a large range of citrus just starting to ripen, Cape gooseberries and lilly pilly are a few more autumn fruits and, of course, there are the more

traditional fruits including the vastly under-rated old-time favourite, rhubarb (which might be a vegetable), peas and broad beans have been added to the mix. Len and his staff are pretty excited about the preserving workshops and said that while they are aimed at young families they are great fun for anyone who would like to learn to bottle fruit the way ‘grandma’ used to do it. Visitors can ask about including a bottling workshop on their itinerary when they’re planning a winery tour, or as part of a hen’s party in the valley! The workshops, at 9.30am to 1pm each day will use whatever fruits are in season with Len and his team more than happy, eager in fact, to inspire some interesting combinations of fruits and juices that result in something completely different to anything that can be found on supermarket shelves. “There is tremendous satisfaction in being able to put food on the table that you’ve made yourself,” Len said. “You put in a bit of effort for a product that is visually appealing and tastes superb. “Our young chef Dwain has mastered a variety of different sauces and chutneys, in fact, winning some awards for these,” he adds, obviously proud of the Rayners’ team and the reputation it has built over the years. Autumn is a great time to put that reputation to the test.

HIKING

Autumn exploration on track By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS AUTUMN is an ideal season to get out into nature and explore some of the magnificent walking tracks that weave all over the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges. While the weather is not too hot and not too cool, the autumn months make hiking an ideal activity while the exotic flora are changing and displaying a wide array of beautiful colours and textures. Below are just two of the many hikes and walking tracks that are on offer to visitors to this majestic part of the county. Healesville to Narbethong on the Bicentennial National Trail (BNT) ·· Distance: 33 km ·· About 6.5 hours on horseback

1201826-CG46-15

·· A challenging trek recommended for experienced hikers of a high fitness level Taking in the tall timber forests in the upper reaches of the Yarra Ranges National Park, this section of the BNT gives hikers and horse riders alike a chance to really immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the Yarra Valley. Leaving from Donnelly’s Weir in Healesville, 8km of rough terrain and rugged tracks starts the trail off though bushland before levelling out along Monda Track heading towards Toolangi. The trail then circles back around the top most sections of the Yarra Ranges National Park and back towards Narbethong. The trek from Monda Yards to Narbethong is 18km of beautiful fern forest and towering ash trees that make for some of the most unique scenery in the country. The last of the trail includes gravel roads and steep downhill tracks that can be treacherous in wet conditions as the track moves from moderately flat grounds into the downhill climb to Narbethong.

KooKABerry

Ending at the Black Spur Inn, where tired hikers and their horses will find hot meals and hot showers after a long day trekking through the bush. Eastern Sherbrooke Forest Walk ·· Distance: 6.6 kilometres ·· About 2.5 hours on foot ·· An easy/ moderate trek recommended for hikers of various fitness levels Considered one of the best walks in the Dandenong Ranges, the Eastern Sherbrooke Forest Walk is a family friendly walk that puts the full majesty of the Dandenongs on display. With the full scope of vegetation that occurs naturally in the bush of the mountain ranges, hikers have the chance to see native animals such as lyrebird, wombats, swamp wallaby, echidna, possums and powerful owls in their natural environment. Mountain Ash and Messmate Stringybark trees, along with a wide variety of ferns and other wet and damp forest vegetation line the walking track, making for a shaded and pleasant walk that envelopes walkers in the cooling cover of native vegetation. Beginning and ending at Grants Picnic Ground on Monbulk Road, the track follows Lyrebird Walk, then turns down Neumann Road, passing though cleared areas of bush created by the successive wildfires of the early 1900s. At Paddy Track Junction, the hike turns south and crosses Hardy Creek before climbing Welch Track and following Coles Ridge Road back to the picnic ground. Parks Victoria advises there are steep sections on Paddy Road and Welch Track which may be slippery when wet. For more walking tracks and hiking trips on offer visit the parks victoria website at www.parkweb.vic.gov.au or call 13 1963.

GALLERIES Evening by Russell Drysdale will feature at the upcoming exhibition.

Changing landscape revealed

By TALIN HADLOW SINCE its opening in 2003, TarraWarra Museum of Art has been celebrating Australian artists. Upcoming exhibitions will be doing that and more. One of the two exhibitions will show the ever-changing Australian landscape – as viewed by numerous, distinguished Australian artists – all through panoramic pieces. The gallery is open from Tuesday to Sunday, 11am to 5pm. Where did the idea of the Panorama exhibition start? Each year, TarraWarra Museum of Art presents a thematic exhibition drawn from its remarkable collection of Australian art from the mid20th century to the present day, which have been gifted by the museum’s founders Eva Besen, AO, and Marc Besen, AC.

Level 1/254A Maroondah Hwy Healesville 3777 Hrs: 10.30am - 5:00pm - closed Tuesday Tel: 5962 3480 - 0414 643 745

Taking advantage of the tremendous depth and strength of the museum’s collection of landscape paintings Panorama will be staged in two parts with a different selection of paintings exhibited in each half. The idea for the exhibition stems from the museum’s ongoing exploration of the idea of ‘the view’. A panorama is a wide-angle view or representation of a physical space; whether in painting, drawing, photography, film or seismic images. For this exhibition, the term panorama will create a context for how artists see the landscape – not simply as a depiction of it, but also an evocation of the layers of history within it. Why was artist Judy Watson chosen to exhibit? Judy Watson has been invited to create a specially commissioned new work for the North Gallery for the duration of the Panorama exhibition from 12 March to 31 July where she will respond to the museum’s location in the Yarra Valley. Watson’s Aboriginal matrilineal family are from Waanyi country in north-west Queensland. Watson’s process of revealing hidden stories within country, working from site and memory, revealing indigenous histories, following lines of emotional and physical topography that centre on particular places and moments in time will result in a unique new work which will prompt visitors to reconsider their perspective on the surrounding landscape in which the museum is situated. Spine was donated by founders Eva and Marc Besen. Where has the rest of Judy Watson’s collection come from? The work Spine is not being exhibited for this exhibition instead Judy Watson will display work which has been newly created especially for this project alongside photographs and found objects that have been discovered during her research on the history of the Yarra Valley and its landscape. Why should people come to view this exhibition? The exhibitions will provide a tremendous opportunity for visitors to engage with modern and contemporary artists who, in different ways, have transformed the way people think about and perceive the Australian landscape. Panorama will feature outstanding works by pioneers who redefined the way we see the landscape – Russell Drysdale, Sidney Nolan, Lloyd Rees, Brett Whiteley and Fred Williams – alongside contemporary artists who reveal the complex and often fraught nature of people’s engagement with place – Ben Quilty, Rosalie Gascoigne, Daniel Boyd, Danie Mellor, Stephen Bush and Imants Tillers. Both exhibitions encourage audiences to see through the artists’ eyes and to contemplate the many different layers embedded in the landscape: its colonisation and cultivation, its ecology and fragility and its Indigenous history.

GEMBROOK MARKET

Free offer to liven market

NOW may be the time to discover the other side of a market; that is, becoming a stallholder. The Gembrook Market is offering an incredible opportunity for those who may have thought about holding a stall, but haven’t taken that next step. Well, now it’s come one, come all for new stall holders as the Gembrook Market committee is offering new stallholders, who may not have held a stall for 12 months, the chance to hold a stall for free for one month. This free offer runs until the end of July, covering the July market. Judy-Ann Steed from the market encouraged those willing to take up the offer. “If you have been thinking about ‘doing’ a market, why not take this opportunity and join other stallholders,” she said. “Whether you make, bake or grow your own – or perhaps have antiques or books, whatever you consider suitable, the market would be pleased to hear from you.” The only thing stallholders have to remember is to bring a copy of their market insurance cover or pay $10 for the market’s cover instead. Ms Steed said there was something special about Gembrook Market. “It sets itself apart from most other markets next to Puffing Billy Station, Gembrook, in a tranquil country treed setting,” she said. Ms Steed said there are plenty of new stalls for market-goers to enjoy as well as the old favourites, such as the Nut Lady, which keeps people coming back. For more information on how to take up this special offer, contact market co-ordinator Peter Carson on 0437 664 121. Gembrook Market is next to Puffing Billy Station at 60 Main Street, Gembrook. Markets are held every fourth Sunday of the month from 9am to 2pm. More details at www.gembrookmarket.com.au.

Get cracking for Easter By JESSE GRAHAM The Yarra Ranges and its surrounds are fantastic places to relax and enjoy a coffee and a bite to eat – and there’ll be places galore to enjoy a good Easter (and the chocolate that goes with it). With the warmer weather easing off, chocolate isn’t likely to melt too quickly in the sun, and places like Healesville’s Maroondah Reservoir or Lillydale Lake offer a great place for a picnic, an egg hunt or an Easter barbecue. The valley and hills are scattered with beautiful parks and hidden areas perfect for long weekend picnic, including the RJ Hamer Forest Arboretum in Olinda or the East Warburton redwood forest on Cement Creek Road. Those after a day of events to mark the holiday can also stop by Emerald Lake Park on Sunday 27 March, for the Cardinia Shire Council’s annual Easter treasure hunt. The event runs from 11am to 3pm and kids will be able to pick up an activity sheet for the free event from the lake park’s cafe, model railway, station or environment centre, and have a day out hunting for treasure among the green hills. 34 AUTUMN 2016

Cardinia Mayor Jodie Owen said that children could balance the delicious chocolate eggs with a day of adventure and physical activity in the park. “A keen eye, a taste for chocolate and some fast feet are all you need to take part in this Easter fun,” Cr Owen said. “Make it a fun-filled family day by packing a picnic lunch and enjoy the beautiful surrounds of Emerald Lake Park.” Meanwhile, at SkyHigh Mount Dandenong, an Easter egg hunt will be held from 10am on the same day, with a limit of six eggs per child. Igor the Giant’s Treasure Hunt will then run from 11am to 5pm, with stilt walkers from 2pm to 4pm and an ocean adventure slide open from 11am to 4pm. Entry to SkyHigh is $6 per car, and entry to the venue’s maze is $4 per child and $6 per adult. For more information, visit www. emeraldlakepark.com.au, or www. skyhighmtdandenong.com.au.
