Having a dip for cancer By MEGAN OGLE TWO Noosa locals will brave the sea and swim over 28kms this weekend in a bid to raise money for cancer research. Steven Boyd and Tim Mandeville will dive into surf off Peregian Beach on Friday 4 March to start their 28.5km swim to Teewah Beach as part of the Cancer Council’s March Challenge fund-raising campaign. The swim will be done over two to four days, depending on surf
conditions, and the swimmers will be flanked by a wave runner for dangerous parts of the swim. Both Tim and Steven have been touched by cancer in their lives, and Steven says it was the loss of his wife, Tania, which has motivated him to take up the swim challenge and to raise much-needed funds for the Cancer Council. The March Challenge pushes participants to cycle, run, swim or walk further, faster and harder for the month of March and to encourage friends and family to support them by donating to the cause.
Steven said he wanted to support not only research into cancer but also into the coping mechanisms of families whose lives were affected by cancer and added he wanted to see a greater focus on the support the Cancer Council provided families. Steven hopes to raise $500 for cancer research and at the time of print had raised over $272. ‘Nanny Noosa’ By MEGAN OGLE AN ONLINE petition calling for council to allow local business Village Bicycle to trade seven nights a week until midnight has gained over 839 signatures within a day. The Change.org petition calls for supporters of “local small business, late night dining options and the growth of Noosa Junction” to add their name to the petition in the hope of
swaying council’s decision regarding outdoor dining restrictions after noise complaints were received by council. One petitioner labelled the town “Nanny Noosa”. “With the support of the local community and our loyal patrons, we hope to rally the Noosa Council to support late night dining in an area zoned for such trade,” the petition states. “Noosa Junction is deemed the business centre of Noosa, so let’s encourage Noosa

Council to support local small business.” Supporters of the petition left comments naming the tourist hot spot “Nanny Noosa” and calling for support of local businesses. “Village Bicycle has been an important part of Noosa Junction’s growth,” one supporter writes. “It has a welcoming environment for all ages and should not have trade restriction.” “Let Noosa Junction and Village Bicycle thrive and grow.”
