City of Casey Balla Balla Ward Councillor Geoff Ablett said “Council believes the proposed changes are not extensive enough, with the state-wide exemption for the use of existing buildings for shared housing remaining in place and Council still unable to consider the full potential impacts on residents’ amenity as part of the application process. Council formally requested that these changes be made and we are disappointed, along with the community, that they were not. Council has resolved to write to the South East Metro and Interface member Councils and the Municipal Association of Victoria seeking their support for Council’s advocacy to the State Government seeking further urgent changes to the Victorian Planning Provisions. Changes being sought would require planning permits for both the use and development of shared housing to ensure Council and resident involvement in the approval of shared housing projects in Victoria.

Car kids in court By GEORGIA WESTGARTH YOUTHS arrested over the spate of home invasions and aggravated burglaries, which targeted luxury cars throughout the southeast last weekend, will face the Melbourne and Dandenong Children’s Court. Investigators from Dandenong Embona Taskforce have charged one youth from Dandenong who has been bailed for offences including aggravated burglary, theft of a motor vehicle, handling stolen goods and possession of offensive weapons. Three youths from Pakenham, two youths from Frankston and one youth from Dandenong have been remanded in custody. The series of car thefts occurred between Friday 19 and Saturday 20 February and spanned Keysborough, Berwick, Narre Warren South and Wheelers Hill. Detective Sergeant Ivan Bobetic from the Dandenong Embona Taskforce said investigations into the car thefts and possible links to the notorious apex gang remained ongoing. “It’s certainly an avenue of inquiry - it appears the ‘apex gang’ is so widespread now, however to categorise them as a group or gang is folly at this point in time, it’s just something that we’ve got in the back of our minds and are exploring as part of the investigation,” Det Sgt Bobetic said. “This type of offending has been occurring for 18 months to two years but not all are related to this group of offenders,” he added. The group arrested for offences reported over the past two to three weeks are all under 18 years old, but Det Sgt Bobetic said a range of different groups and ages were involved in the burglaries to some degree. “A lot of them are known to each other,” he said. “The level of violence and lack of contrition is alarming for their ages - it seems they have no concept of what they are doing, conscience for the victims or they simply don’t care.” Det Sgt Bobetic said the thefts and home invasions seemed to occur in the early hours of the morning and urged anyone who saw

people loitering around their home or neighbour’s house to call triple zero immediately. “It’s a sad day when you can’t leave your car keys on your kitchen bench,” he said. The recent car thefts all occurred overnight and detectives received nine reports of aggravated burglaries between 6am and 7.45am on Saturday 20 February. A 2015 black Mercedes Benz coupe was stolen from Berwick about 6am, while a 2015 grey Mercedes wagon was stolen from Berwick about an hour later. Sometime between 1am and 7am on Saturday, a 2010 black BMW X5 wagon was stolen in Keysborough, and a 2006 blue Holden Statesman was stolen in Narre Warren South between 1.30am and 8.40am. A 2015 white Volkswagen Golf was also stolen from Wheelers Hill between 2am and 3am on Saturday. Det Sgt Bobetic said police had recovered some of cars since the weekend. “There were a number of home invasions committed and vehicles and personal property and electrical equipment was also stolen and we are making inquiries to recover that property.” He added that the cars were often found to be burnt out or dumped on the side of the road. “At this point if you own a luxury car, we suggest locking it away out of sight and for people to be vigilant - residents need to be alert, not alarmed,” he said. Police are still investigating the motives behind the spate of car thefts, but Det Sgt Bobetic said the risk of a disturbed homeowner waking up and getting hurt during a home invasion was a major concern. “We ask people to comply with them and their demands and not to take them on, get them out of the house as quickly as possible and then call police,” he said. Investigations are ongoing, with further suspects expected to be arrested and charged in the coming days. Anyone with any information in relation to this series of offences is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Bouncer, not stalker By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A KITTENS strip club security guard has denied charges of stalking and threatening a stripper by pressing an illegal handgun against her face. Patrick Iaulualo, 21, of Hampton Park, allegedly admitted to police to owning the unregistered .22 calibre gun and 150 rounds of matching ammunition found in his car’s back seat, a court bail hearing was told on 22 February. Iaulualo told police he was armed out of fear of outlaw motorcycle gang members after shots were fired at his South Melbourne workplace in November. He denied the 19-year-old stripper’s claims they had a brief affair, and that after its demise he stalked, threatened to kill and pulled a gun on her on Australia Day night, the court heard. Iaulualo counter-claimed that the victim was his “obsessed” stalker. Detective Senior Constable Craig Dergacz, of Casey CIU, told the court that the married father-of-two phoned the alleged victim, then visited her at a Hallam house that night. CCTV footage showed Iaulualo driv-

ing up and down the street several times before visiting the former work colleague. The victim agreed to speak in Iaulualo's car, where he allegedly pulled the gun and placed the barrel against her face, Det Sen Const Dergacz said. He pressed a button and activated a red laser on the weapon, the victim told police. At that stage, the victim allegedly feared she would be shot and begged to go home. Fifteen minutes later, Iaulualo followed the victim’s car, Det Sen Const Dergacz said. During the drive, he rang to say: “I feel like I’m letting you go too easy”. He allegedly instructed her to pull into a servo or he’d shoot her tyres. CCTV footage showed the accused approach the victim’s car and sit in the passenger seat. Iaulualo was later seen pacing up and down as he was locked out of the service station, the court was told. The following day, police intercepted Iaulualo in his car with the loaded gun and ammunition.

“I hold great fear the victim will be further assaulted and stalked,” Det Sen Const Dergacz said. In court, defence lawyer Roona Nida said the “alleged victim” was “lying”. “The worker was interested in spending time with him. They just went to McDonald’s to dinner after work. “He noticed the victim was becoming obsessed. He said to her that he couldn’t spend time with her because it was against the policy of the club.” Ms Nida said Iaulualo became “worried and confused” after being told by the victim that “your life is at risk”. He visited her at her ex-boyfriend’s house to find out what she meant by the comment, Ms Nida said. “My client has denied having the gun that day. A few weeks earlier she saw the gun in his car.” At the service station, Iaulualo was agitated when shown a text from ‘Mick’ - a name that the accused recognised as a bikie gang member. Iaulualo’s wife testified that she and the children were hastily booked into a Dandenong hotel that night because the accused was “scared someone will run

through the house”. She said Iaulualo believed someone was following him and would “hurt us”. In arguing for bail, Ms Nida said the victim had apologetically texted Iaulualo’s mother since the incident, wishing she “could do something about it”. Det Sen Const Dergacz told the court the victim had been pressured by the accused’s family and friends into withdrawing the charges - in apparent breach of an intervention order. Magistrate Julie O’Donnell noted Iaulualo’s supportive family in court, that he was just 15 when he committed his only prior offence of armed robbery, and had independent referees vouching for his character. She refused bail because of the “serious nature” of the charges, including allegedly using an illegal handgun in an indicatable offence. “I find there’s an unacceptable risk to the victim and frankly to the community.” Iaulualo will appear at a contest mention at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 1 March.

School holidays that never ended By LACHLAN MOORHEAD IT WAS the school holidays - but these children would never go back to school. The tragedy of it enveloped Bob Halsall hours after the horrific crash. The former Casey councillor was sitting in his car at the stop lights where Lynbrook Boulevard crosses over the South Gippsland Highway, when horror unfolded in front of his eyes at the Lynbrook intersection. He was the first responder at the crash site, which claimed the lives of two boys, six and nine, after a truck ran a red light and hit their car in March 2008. “I can still see it,” Bob said. “You never really forget.” Almost a decade later safety concerns are still being raised about the site, with Casey Council last week urging the community to participate in a recently activated VicRoads survey regarding the notorious intersection. While VicRoads installed new warning signs at the site in 2013, the state’s road body and Casey Council are eager to install extra safety measures, with flashing lights suggested by Cr Wayne Smith last week. For Bob, it’s a no-brainer - ev-

erything has to be done to mitigate the risks. In the five years from 2010 to 2015 there have been seven crashes resulting in deaths at that same intersection. A few hours after the 2008 crash, Bob was sitting at home when he learned that the boys hadn’t survived the incident. It was then he knew his burden was nothing compared to that which the families involved would carry for the rest of their lives. Bob, who has a young son himself, always thinks of the crash survivors and the families whose lives have been ruined by that intersection. He said we have to learn from the past. “That was two kids who will never have a future, who could have gone on to do all sorts of things we’ll never know about,” Bob said. “Anything to mitigate the risks is worthwhile.” Those members of the community who are familiar with this intersection are encouraged to complete the survey, which closes on 21 February, and which can be found at www.vicroads. vic.gov. au.

A gift for every angel By GEORGIA WESTGARTH ANGEL Gowns Australia is there during the most unimaginable heartbreak a parent will ever have to face - the death of their child or newborn baby. And it’s the gift of a wedding dress, from one loving family to another that makes this not-for-profit organisation so special in a time of great tragedy. For almost two years, Angel Gowns Australia has been transforming wedding dresses into handcrafted garments for stillborn babies, premature babies who have died as a result and newborns and children who have passed through infantile and childhood illnesses. Now with more than 5000 wedding dresses in storage, the army of seamstresses have enough to work with, just not enough fingers to do the work. Lynbrook-based state manager at Angel Gowns Australia; Vicki Agius said she has had an enormous reaction from former brides. “It’s been so gratifying for us, and we have re-opened collection of dresses for the next eight weeks,” Ms Agius said. “When a baby dies, no matter how ear-

“When losing this tiny life there is so much grief and heartache, the same grief and heartache of any parent, of any family, when a life is lost.

“And each Angel Gown garment is made with so much love to honour the life of a baby taken far too soon.” Ms Agius currently has around 47 Victorian dressmakers deconstructing wedding dresses into delicate, intricate garments for parents to dress their child in for the last time, and said “We desperately need a lot more.” “We hope to give each family who needs one an Angel Gown,” she said, which in some special circumstances results in a mother wrapping her child in her own altered wedding dress. And with the organisations first gala dinner and auction this April, Ms Agius is asking for local businesses to either sponsor or donate items to be sold at the gala auction. “Victoria has been chosen to host the event and we are fortunate enough to have Lincoln of Toorak donate their premises for the occasion,” she said. To make a donation to the gala dinner and auction or to donate your wedding dress contact Vicki Agius on 0414 511330 or email her at vicki.agius@angelgownsaustralia.org.au

Slow wind is a blow for boat race organisers By GEORGIA WESTGARTH IT’S one of the biggest sail boat races in Victoria and even with slow to no wind, it manages to bring in the crowds, yachts and record seekers. The Warneet Motor Yacht Club’s Around French Island Race (WAFIR) brought competitors from Geelong to Gippsland and in its 41st year the race attracted 38 boats and one wind surfer. Club commodore Michael Obrien said the numbers were up 50 per cent on last year.

“It was a huge, successful day and a boat from the Hastings Yacht Club Mahal Bangker won on the day with the fastest time of six hours, 42 minutes and 47 seconds,” Mr Obrien said. Boats set off from Warneet on Saturday 20 February from 8am. But due to a drop in wind, the course had to be shortened. “Our slower boats leave at 8am and the faster ones at 8.15am to keep it fair and because we have to finish up by 6pm and

due to light winds we brought the finish line up to Hastings,” he said. “Our slowest boat came in at 10 hours and 15 minutes.” Trophies were engraved in Tooradin as boats sailed into Hastings and a presentation ceremony was held at the Warneet Motor Yacht Club after the big day. However the day didn’t go to plan for keen wind surfer Simon Chambers who was on a mission to break a record and achieve his long-term dream.

SECONDARY school students from across Casey have been specially selected by the Mayor of Casey to delve deeper into the world of State and Federal politics. The three stage study tour lets the Casey year 11 students ease into Australian politics with an introductory dinner at the City of Casey before getting thrown in the deep end at the state level and meeting state members of parliament. Chosen for their interest in politics and law, the 10 teenagers will also get to grasp what it’s like to help make decisions on behalf of the Australian people in Canberra. The four day trip to Canberra includes a day at Parliament House, meeting with Federal MPs, visits to the High Court and the National Gallery. Participants were awarded the honour of attending the tour at the City of Casey Australia Day awards ceremony. Award recipients include Abdul Mohammed, Anagha Ramachandra, Georgia Coward-Smith, Gul Dasta Ali, Joshua Hoxha, Lachlan Iape, Pooja Jeyadeva, Shakila Husaini, Zachary Vogrig and Zoja Kovacs.

With six litres of water on board and an array of lollies to get him through, Mr Chambers said he has learnt a lot for his next attempt around French Island. “Next time I will take off from Blind Bight instead of Warneet and I will keep trying until I get around, it’s on the bucket list,” he said.

Petitions have been signed across Casey and the Cardinia Shire and Opposition emergency services spokesman Brad Battin has also met with CFA members and signed a pledge in support of presumptive legislation. Volunteer Fire Brigades Victoria (VFBV) raised concern about the lack of detail in the proposed legislation, including whether it will apply retrospectively and if it will treat volunteer and career firefighters equally.

Victorian CFA volunteers have suggested oesophageal cancer, brain cancer, leukaemia, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and myeloma be covered by compensation assessed based on years of service. If the legislation is brought in, firefighters’ claims can still be rejected if it can be proved that the cancer was not related to firefighting duties. The State Government is working through policy details with VFBV and the United Fire-fighters Union.

Stapledon raised the issue at a council meeting on Tuesday 16 February, saying a post office at Shopping on Clyde is “desperately needed”. “You have retirees who don’t always have a licence, so access to a post office is a problem,” Cr Stapledon said. “Plus in a rapidly growing area, with no train and bus services and single-car families, you want a post office in a shopping centre, so customers have access to other services at the same time.” Australia Post revealed there are currently six post offices within 10km of the Shopping on Clyde precinct. And a spokesperson said a number of factors were taken into con-

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH CUSTOMERS are crying out for a post office or sub agency at Cranbourne’s new Shopping on Clyde precinct, but Australia Post has turned down the request. An Australia Post spokesperson told Star News, “While Australia Post will continue to monitor the needs of the Clyde community, we do not believe an additional post office is required at this point in time.” Shopping on Clyde owner Jodie Mitchell from Clarkson Developments said she had been in talks with Australia Post for 12 months. “We’re not getting very far,” she said. “We get people asking us on our Facebook page, where they can buy a stamp or pay bills all the time.” After being inundated with requests for a postal facility since the centre opened in December last year, Ms Mitchell has taken the concerns of Cranbourne and Clyde residents to the City of Casey. “We’ve got a Tattslotto shop opening at the end of February, which we want to combine as a post office, sub agency and newsagency as well,” Ms Mitchell said. “The post office currently in Clyde is very isolated, and there is no public transport to it, so we are putting together a petition for council.” So far more than 1000 people have signed the petition for a postal agency. Letters Don’t flush us WHILE our “local” Narre Warren MPs Judith Graley and Luke Donnellan are busy ensuring the date roll is well stocked at Hallam station, the long drop I’m worried about is their pledge to have boom gates removed at Hallam and Berwick (“A convenient truth, at last”, 18 February 2016). Further up the line, communities are aggro about Labor’s plan to replace boom gates with nine-metre high ‘sky rail’. Sky rail is no toilet humour – it will make the Pakenham line a virtual rollercoaster and even more of a target for graffiti vandals. I call on our MPs to rule out construction of ugly ‘sky rail’ between Hallam and Berwick. Don’t flush us Judith and Luke. Ashley Lodder, Berwick.

RE: Crying wolf Mayor Aziz, let the readers know you have never seen me and you know that is not true. What is true is we have never spoken. I have had questions read out in council over the years and my name is called out and I stand up to acknowledge my presence. I was at the focus group in December when you gave your talk and I was in the front row so you cannot say you did not see me. Regarding the Brookland Greens Estate, as you would not be aware as we don’t talk, I have made contact with state MPs and had meetings regarding these boarding houses being built. Being president of a gang as you put it, the Casey Residents and Ratepayers Association, we also have concerns about the boarding houses. I have had emails returned to me by a State Government Minister giving me the answers I was looking for, so I will be passing on my information to the residents concerned. I also direct the readers to the 15 October 2009 Victorian Ombudsman report into the methane gas leak, and let them be the judge. You mayor also state people don’t hear what I say. I ask you to come with me with a Berwick News reporter - we'll knock on doors in the Springfield Ward and ask residents if they want rate increases over CPI. If they all agree to paying higher rates, I give you my word I will not challenge you at the next council election in October. By doing the doorknock you can get to know me a little better, and I will buy the coffee. Rex Flannery, President, Casey Residents and Ratepayers Association.

Hoons strike By GEORGIA WESTGARTH HOONS on mini bikes have caused hundreds of dollars’ worth of damage to a car parked in a Cranbourne 7- Eleven. The attack occurred in December and was captured on CCTV footage by the shop assistant who watched in dismay as his relatives’ car was pelted with stones. Cranbourne resident Saahil Luthra had let his cousin, who works at the Evans Road petrol station, borrow his car for the night when the incident occurred. “There were two of them on mini bikes and they did this on purpose, Mr Luthra told Star News. “It was their intention, they

were revving their bikes near my car and broke the driver’s side window. “It cost me $300 to get it fixed with a second-hand window, he said. The incident happened about 2.30am and Mr Luthra said his cousin is now too scared to borrow his car. “My cousin called police at the time but they said they were too busy to make it, Mr Luthra said. But this isn’t Mr Luthra’s first experience with hoons - he deals with them on a weekly basis. “I live on Camms Road and we get small dirt bikes and mini bikes going up and down the road of an evening.

“It starts at around 6pm and it can be off and on until 1am, he said. Mr Luthra has lived at his home for four years and said the hooning started in mid-2015. “It’s very bad. I’ve seen them not stop at traffic lights on Camms Road and drive on the wrong side of the road, he said. “They wake my baby up in the night and when we go for walks my wife has had to stop due to all the smoke. Mr Luthra said Friday and Saturday nights seem to be the worst for such behaviour. Have you seen hoons on Camms Road? What do you think needs to be done to stop the reckless behaviour? Leave a comment below.

THREE years ago Berwick mum Carolyn King took a handful of sleeping tablets in an attempt to end her life, having battled depression and low self-esteem. Her journal of notes on her darkest days in the form of a book is there to be shared with those battling depression. Ms King’s easy read is titled, ‘Empowered Happiness - Discovering Bliss Beyond Depression,’ and it all started with her damaging thoughts, “I don’t want to be here”. “I hit rock bottom, I didn’t consciously say I wanted to die, I just didn’t want to be here, I didn’t have the capacity to think deeply about it, I just wanted to get away,” Ms King said. It was her husband, Lloyd, who found her in the tragic state, but it was Ms King who picked herself up again. “Lloyd discovered the tablets I had taken weren’t that strong and that was the turning point, I think it scared me that I had actually thought about finishing my life,” Ms King said. Factors that led to Ms King’s despair included hormonal inbalances after giving birth to her two children, Aaliyah, 10, and Jordan, 8, and her constant confidence issues stemming from childhood. “All my life I have had a problem with my self-esteem, and I wasn’t aware of the hormonal changes I was going through after my second child, but I knew I had a problem, I just didn’t know how to fix it,” she said. “At the time I was getting a lot of attention from people, and I would whinge about it.” Ms King, 41, is a practising kinesiologist and said she used her knowledge in natural health to help overcome her own crimping evil, never to touch anti-depressants. “I went to a counsellor, and it took about a year from that point that I felt I was over it,” she said. “But then I thought how did I do that, I need to find out so I can help people.” “Because when I was suffering depression, people would say to me ‘get over it’, ‘there’s nothing going on, what’s your problem’ and part

Abuse is rife By GEORGIA WESTGARTH IT’S called elder abuse and its happening in Casey homes now more than ever. In charge of the Casey Family Violence Unit (CFVU), Sergeant Ian Lane calls elder abuse an “emerging trend which hits the one person that loves the offender the most, their parent. Elder abuse is when an adult child, still living at home with their parent or parents commits emotional and psychological, physical and financial abuse against them. “People prefer to think that elder abuse doesn’t happen, Sgt Lane said. “But in the past two years I have been in charge of the CFVU, without a doubt, I’ve seen more cases of elder abuse now than ever before. “It’s incredibly sad because parents have gone through most of their lives nurturing and providing for their children and when they get to a point where

they need that support, they are being taken advantage of financially and physically. Sgt Lane said he is unsure whether the increase in elder abuse reflects the fact that children are staying at home longer or if more people are reporting incidents to police. “If people are reporting elder abuse more it’s a good sign as far as I’m concerned, he said. A father in his fifties was recently subjected to physical abuse from his adult son in a Casey suburb due to drugs, a factor Sgt Lane sees all too often. “Alcohol and drug addictions, family separations and mental health are all common factors in family violence, he said. “In this case the young man was constantly harassing his father for money to sustain his drug habit and, of course, the father didn’t want to give him money, saying that there must be a better way.

“Which is what most parents would do, but this has obviously been building up over time and the son has pushed the father up against a fridge, he has fallen to the ground and required medical treatment. “This is a fairly standard type of event we would attend but we would like to think people have more respect for their parents. Sgt Lane said elder abuse, which is centred on control, severely affects parents physiologically. “We see a lot of psychological abuse where threats are made, the emotional side is huge, he said. “And this type of elder abuse from a policing perspective is the most difficult to deal with. Anyone with information about elder abuse is urged to call police and support the parent by listening to their concerns.

Trainers face court on bait By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS FORMER Tooradin Trial Track managers and greyhound trainers have briefly appeared in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court over charges of using rabbits and a pig as live-bait to blood greyhounds. Stuart Mills, 30, the former track manager, appeared on 35 charges including three counts of keeping, using or assisting the management of premises for the baiting or mistreating of an animal in late 2014 and early 2015. His father Anthony Mills, 64, and the track’s former assistant manager Lawrence Cunningham, 57, have been charged with the same offence. Another 11 trainers and handlers, including former Australian greyhound trainer of the year Darren McDonald, were called to court on 18 February. McDonald faces charges including allegedly using a pig as

bait on 18 November 2014. The accused men were facing RSPCA animal cruelty and live baiting charges at the Tooradin track, which closed soon after a Four Corners investigation last year. The men have since been suspended or banned for life from the greyhound industry. Stuart Mills’s list of charges included the alleged use of rabbits and a pig as a lure to blood greyhounds from November 2014 to February 2015. Anthony Mills faced animal cruelty charges involving rabbits as live bait on 15 January 2015. Facing a total of 44 offences, Cunningham was charged with multiple counts of using rabbits as a lure on 23 December 2014 and 15 January 2015. Cunningham and McDonald did not appear in person in court nor did four other ac-

cused - Dennis Dean, 47, Paul Anderton, 61, Eric Sykes, 53, and James Reynolds, 52. Dean and Anderton’s charges involved alleged use of rabbits as bait in November 2014. Sykes, Reynolds and trainers Kerry Chalker, 71, Neville King, 68, Brett Mackie, 47, Douglas Wheeler, 59, Robert Smith, 73, and Kenneth Hodges, 75, appeared on charges involving rabbit lures on 23 December 2014. Magistrate Julie O’Donnell rejected Smith’s application to have his name suppressed by court order. Barrister Brian Bourke argued the suppression of Smith’s name was necessary while the former greyhound racing official appealed his disqualification by Greyhound Racing Victoria. The cases were adjourned to be heard at Frankston Magistrates’ Court on 1 April.

P-plater among drink-drivers nabbed A 20-YEAR-OLD Hampton Park driver on his P-plates was caught drink driving after blowing more than twice the legal limit. The man was one of 16 drink drivers caught after police conducted a two-day drink driving operation over the weekend in the Stonnington police service area. Police also booked people

Thursday, 25 February, 2016 Page 11

cranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au

for 17 other driver offences during the operation, which is ongoing in Stonnington during Fridays and Saturdays. Prahran Highway Patrol Acting Sergeant Peter Shrimpton said it was disturbing to see so many young drivers, specifically P-platers, drink driving. “They’re putting their lives and the lives of their passengers

at risk through poor decision making,” he said. “This coupled with multiple offences for failing to wear seatbelts and too many peer passengers in their vehicles is a recipe for disaster. “What is it going to take for them to realise that a zero limit means zero alcohol before driving?”

CRANBOURNE families may not be rolling in cash, but recent data has revealed they are more generous than those who call Toorak home. Aid organisation, Plan International’s latest statistics have revealed more residents living in Cranbourne sponsor a child in a developing country than some of Melbourne’s most affluent suburbs. The data ranks Victoria’s 95 suburbs in order of generosity, and Cranbourne has 54 registered child sponsors, while Toorak sponsored just 52. Cranbourne also topped Brighton East, Malvern and Ivanhoe.

The most generous postcode was Brunswick with 164 child sponsors registered, and Pacoe Vale South ranked lowest with 42 sponsors. In a statement, Plan International Australia’s Director of Marketing and Fundraising, Ben Holgate, shone a light on the wealthier suburbs, which he felt weren’t pulling their weight. “It is interesting to see how some of the postcodes you’d expect to place higher in the rankings, because they’re economically stronger, are relatively under-represented,“ Mr Holgate said. “Wealthy Australians are

generous in so many ways, with endowments to hospital and art galleries ... and some are very generous to Plan International Australia. “We’d like to see as many people as possible sponsoring children through Plan - so if people in Toorak, or other under-represented suburbs, want to pick up the ball and donate more, then we would love that." Mr Holgate added that results were a testament to the generosity and “warm-heartedness" of Victorians from all backgrounds. Mentors needed for buddies By GEORGIA WESTGARTH

LIFE skills are in demand at Cranbourne Secondary College, as it becomes the first Casey school to introduce the Raise Foundation's mentoring program, and are in need of adult volunteers. The buddy system, will partner up 15 Year 7 to 10 students with an adult mentor, who will spend two hours a week with the student for 20 weeks. Raise counsellor Tania Di Paolo-Knight, who supervises the mentors, said the program

offered young people a role model in a time of great transition in their lives. "The mentor becomes someone the students can confide in and talk to about things that they might not do with anyone else," Ms Di Paolo-Knight said. "Our statistics have shown, that before the program, just 13 per cent of boys are inclined to ask for help from an adult, and 31 per cent of girls, that goes up to 80 per cent after the 20 weeks." Ms Di Paolo-Knight said

with many students facing big decisions in Year 10, a mentor could be just what they needed. "We had a male student say that if it wasn't for his mentor, he would have quit school. And that it was his mentor who helped him decide what to do with his life, and he started a trade," she said. Mentors go through a free accredited program over three weeks. Every day, a discovery. Casey Grammar School 3 New Holland Drive, Cranbourne East, Victoria, 3977

IT’S not every day that the Cranbourne CFA gets to welcome two new recruit firefighters who have called the station home as volunteers. Former Cranbourne CFA volunteers Chris Williams and Adam Hanger have made it through the rigorous application and training process to do what they’ve always dreamed of - a goal that has been on Mr Williams’s mind for more than 17 years. Mr Williams, 36, said he thought he’d grow out of the dream. “Time got away from me

and it was one of those things I thought I’d move past but it had always been there that’s why I became a volunteer at 18 years old,” he said. Senior station officer Stuart Curnow said such integration doesn’t happen all the time. “To have two come from one brigade from volunteer to staff in six months is pretty rare,” he said. Mr Williams graduated as a firefighter in December last year and was sent to Traralgon. However he said that even after 17 years volunteering and four months of training, he’s still got a lot to learn. “Training is always ongoing

and it’s a lot more involved than volunteering, but it gave me the best platform - I love it,” Mr Williams said. And Mr Hanger said he always knew he’d end up a “firey”. “I’ve been a mechanic with the CFA for five years, I did my auto apprenticeship with them and I’ve always wanted to go full-time even before I became a volunteer,” he said. The Cranbourne CFA has had four new recruits join the station over the past three months and urge anyone interested in volunteering to contact them or visit www.cfa.vic.gov. au.

Community rallies for Bella's fight DOING what they do best, the Allan family and the equestrian community jumped for Bella, as the seven-year-old's leukaemia fight continues. Bella Allan, who has been in and out of hospital for several months, is awaiting a bone marrow transplant which got stalled due to a bout of pancreatitis. But in true fashion her family and friends have rallied to raise more than $5000 in one day, for the Allan family, on top of the $100,000 raised through events last year. More than 100 riders took part in the show jumping event at Langwarrin Pony Club on Sunday 14 February, and fittingly Bella’s cousin and equestrian champion, Tesse Cook, took home gold on the day. Tesse won two top classes including the 1.25m and 1.35m on her horse Heatherton Park Alfonz. International show jumping judges, Kevin Taranto and Annie White, and show jumping course designer Paul Williams all donated their time for the event. The Bella army is also building a team for the Run for the Kids fund-raiser, which will be held on Sunday 20 March.

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST

Centre creates jobs surge By LACHLAN MOORHEAD CASEY needs more local jobs. Councillors are often championing the need for more local jobs to curb the number of people travelling from Casey and back for work. The Casey Central Shopping Centre, which is nearing the end of its development, is expected to do this - provide additional jobs to a community craving them, including those builders currently working on the facility. Centre manager Daniel Boyle said as much to Star News last week during a tour of the new development. “There’s been at least 1200 people working on the site,” he said. “There were something like 60 or 70 jobs before, Coles being the main driver of those, and we’re expecting it to reach around 400. “It was about 7000 square metres before and it will be 28,500 when it’s finished.” The employees at Target and Coles moved into their premises before Christmas, while other traders are expected to move into their shops in the coming weeks. “It’s a place to meet, it’s a place to spend time with your family and friends,” Mr Boyle said of the new shopping centre. “It’s about getting the basics of everyday. So it’s a school uniform for the kids, it’s a pair of shoes, dad might come and buy a present for mum, you can do your fresh food shopping every week, drop in and get some take-away. “It’s very focused on every day needs.” The Casey Central Pharmacy has been trading out of the shopping centre since the facility first opened more than a decade ago, and co-proprietor Anthony Tassone told Star News he was excited at the prospect of moving into a new, refurbished facility after all these years. “It’s a long-time coming, and we’re really grateful to the Scentre Group for investing in the local area,” he said. “We’ve been here from the start, since 2000 and the shopping centre has seen a number of owners, all promising a second stage, thankfully it’s finally here.” Mr Tassone echoed Mr Boyle’s sentiment and

Daniel Boyle, Cr Louise Berkelmans, Peter Hugh, Adrian Powell outside the new Casey Central Pictures: STEWART CHAMBERS Shopping Centre development. 150384 praised the prospect of new jobs for the community. “You go into business to create opportunity and it's really, really exciting to be able to offer new positions, offer new opportunities - the Casey Central Shopping Centre Facebook page lights up every time there’s a job advertisement or a job opportunity,” he said. “People want to get involved, which is great, and it will be a really great thing once it arrives. “What we will be most excited with, is we will be able to have links with an extended hours medical centre to work with doctors and their healthcare providers to provide more complete care for our community.”

New Audi steals the glitzy launch show AUDI Barry Bourke launched the new tech savvy Audi A4 model with a pop of the cork, in-room simulated test drives and, of course, the showstopper which sat front and centre. Cementing his name around Berwick since 1987, the Barry Bourke dealership brought in 70 Casey locals and Audi owners, along with Mayor Sam Aziz and his family, to the cocktail party on Friday 19 February. The launch party was a huge success and showcased some local talent in 14-year-old student Madison Padula who impressed Audi enthusiasts with her vocals while break-dancers took the entertainment to the floor.

A technology pioneer in its segment, the Audi A4 officially hit car yards on 13 February and since the Berwick launch, the Barry Bourke team has watched two happy customers drive away in the new A4. The innovative and progressive design features Audi matrix LED headlights, Bang Olufsen 3D sound system, innovative interior architecture and apple car play and Android auto. The car starts at $62,800 drive away, including metallic paint and the Barry Bourke showroom has stocked up with A4 models ready to be test driven. For more information on the new A4, contact Audi Barry Bourke on 9707 2222.

Market’s fresh look ORIGINATING as the Casey Berwick Farmers Market in January 1997 as a community project run by the Rotary Club of Berwick, the market has traded on the fourth Saturday of each month ever since. Its customers have always sought local, farm fresh products but have been asking for more variety and the addition of some craft to make it a one-stop market for all their needs. Commencing on Saturday 27 February between 8am and 12.30pm, the new look Berwick Farmers and Craft Market will still be run by the Rotary Club of Berwick as a community event where proceeds of the

market are delivered back into Rotary’s local, national and international projects. This new look Farmers and Craft Market allows vendors to provide a multitude of specialty products such as honey, breads, wines, cheese, eggs, meats and fresh fruit and vegetables. And now there is exceptional hand-made quality craft. Every month there will be a different family friendly event. This month there is an animal nursery. On 26 March the Easter Bunny will be hopping along for an Easter egg hunt and the April market will host the Big-

gest Morning Tea. The new website www.berwickfarmerscraftmarket.com. au will launch by the February market and will allow visitors to keep up to date with what is happening at the market, subscribe to the market’s newsletter, follow on Facebook and connect with stallholders to order additional produce, goods or craft items. The Berwick Farmers and Craft Market gates will open at the Old Cheese Factory, 34 Homestead Road, Berwick, on Saturday 27 February at 8am. There is abundant free parking.

Ten Australians will compete, the biggest representation at Phillip Island in many years. Race formats for WorldSBK have been rejigged for 2016, with the traditional double header race-day Sunday jettisoned in favour of one race each day, with a 22-lap race on the Saturday at 3pm and the second 22-lap battle scheduled for the Sunday at 3pm. WorldSBK will practise and qualify on Friday and Saturday with Superpole moving up the Saturday agenda to a 12.30pm timeslot, ahead of the 3pm race one. The WorldSSP race at Phillip Island will be held over 21 laps at 1.20pm on Sunday, with qualifying on Saturday.

Also competing will be Australian superbikes, Australian supersport, Australian Moto3 and a line-up of Historics, with all world and national categories on track on Sunday to make it a bumper race-day. THE words ‘bunjil’ and ‘business’ proved synonymous this week. Representatives from more than 130 businesses visited Casey council chambers on Monday 22 February for a special information session about the $125 million Bunjil Place project. A number of local traders, manufacturers and suppliers turned out to meet with representatives from Brookfield Multiplex which was recently awarded the contract to build the new facility, while a number of major sub-contractors including plumbing, electrical, climate control and civil works representatives - were available for discussion. One of these local traders was Adam Downes, the owner of Charisma Coffee Vans, who knows how much tradies like their coffee and saw a business opportunity to provide caffeine to those people working on the Bunjil construction in the coming months. With his business label emblazoned on his polo shirt, Mr Downes attended the information session to introduce himself to the Brookfield representatives and make his pitch. “It seems like a great opportunity, there’s a lot of demand with workers for coffee,” Mr Downes told Star News. “Workers need fuel to keep going and I’m sure most people love a coffee. “So that’s the main reason that I’m here, to meet some new people within the local area as well and generate some business that way.” As well as the need for coffee, pieces of art were also championed at the information morning. Miranda Super from Paint a Pot in Narre Warren attended the event to speak to council staff about potentially having art work displayed in Bunjil Place once the facility was completed. With a number of her mother’s art works in tow, Ms Super spoke about her idea.

Paint a Pot's Miranda Super would like to see her company's art work on display at Bunjil.

Charisma Coffee Vans owner Adam Downes gets a top-up at the Bunjil Place information session this week.

“We’d like to do two things, we’d like to put a resin piece in Bunjil, so a large-scale piece that represents the build and the colours around Narre Warren,” she said. “But we also specialise in community projects so what we’d love to do is get all the local schools involved in a project that could be something like painting tiles of things that they feel represent the local area and this new building that we’re getting. “And then have a mural put up outside or inside this building.” Ellis Air Construction Manager Grant Hillman was one of several sub-contractors at the information session who spoke to traders, noting how the project differed to others his company has worked on. “Ellis has been involved with this since the early days of tendering, which for a job like this it’s probably six months ago,” he said. “This is probably a mid-size project for us but it’s an inter-

esting one because it’s got a bit of everything, there are not many jobs around like this at the moment. “Just the fact that it’s got so many different types of spaces, office spaces, council chambers, you’ve got a theatre so it makes it interesting for all the guys that work for us.” Bunjil Place Project Director Steve Dalton said as the project progresses, he expected Brookfield Multiplex and its sub-contractors to source many materials and services locally. “One hundred and eighty four businesses registered their interest in the project with us and 131 walked through the doors yesterday,” he said on Tuesday. “Of these, 38 per cent were from Casey and Cardinia, 22 per cent from Dandenong and about 40 per cent were from a bit further afield, proving that Melbourne’s south-east businesses are eager to provide the equipment, material and or specialist services that builder and sub-contractors may need to get the job done.”

MORE avenues to talk about mental health can only be a good thing. In the City of Casey, a range of options have been made available to consolidate and improve one’s mental health in recent years as awareness continues to grow across the municipality. While a new headspace facility was opened in Narre Warren last year, the Melbourne Bipolar Network will hold an important information night in Berwick next month. The Bipolar Disorder information night at Berwick Healthcare is on Tuesday 1 March, where a number of specialists will speak to the local community about the intricacies of the disorder and how this affects those who suffer from it, as well as their friends and family. The headspace facility was opened a few years after a community summit on suicide was convened by Holt MP Anthony Byrne following a cluster of youth suicides in Casey and Cardinia in 2011 and 2012.

From left, Casey Councillor Mick Morland, Melbourne Bipolar Network volunteer Ray Farrelly and Berwick Healthcare practice manager Cathy Hermans. Ray Farrelly, a volunteer from the Melbourne Bipolar Network, said statistics indicated there were 3000 people with bipolar disorder in Casey, with 1500 reportedly undiagnosed. Moderated by Emma Higgins, a Learning and Development Consultant from Mind Australia, the Berwick information night will include presentations from Psychotropic Drug Advisory Service pharmacist Christine Culhane, Grow Clinic founder and perinatal psychiatrist Adaobi Udechuku, and

Eastern Health Peer Support coordinator Paula Kelly. The Melbourne Bipolar Network is a non-profit charity set up in 2008 and run by volunteers, which runs a support group at Berwick Healthcare on the first Tuesday of every month. For more information, visit the Melbourne Bipolar Network website at www.mbpn.org.au. Those in need of immediate assistance can phone Lifeline on 13 11 14.

Randle’s dream is closer By JARROD POTTER EDGING one step closer to his lifelong dream in motorsport has Thomas Randle keen to hit the track in the United Kingdom next week. Randle, 19, from Narre Warren North, will take his motor-racing ambitions to the next level after signing with Douglas Motorsport in the 2016 BRDC Formula 4 Championship. There’s no time to sit around and contemplate the big news though, as Randle packs up to leave on Sunday with his first testing session on Thursday at the famous Silverstone Formula 1 track. “It feels pretty fantastic it's always been a dream of mine to go and race in Europe ever since I was little,” Randle said. “Over the summer break we bounced a few emails across each other they approached us and were quite keen to have me there. “They turned down a few drivers so I could be on the team which was pretty cool we’ve just been speaking for the last month and a half and

has all come together in the last week.” The Beaconhills College alumnus has been behind the wheel since he was seven years old, taking his time to learn the craft in go-karts - where he was a national champion and Australian representative - before moving into the open-wheel class. His recent success put him on the European radar, after winning the Formula Ford Championship in 2014 and finishing second in last season’s Cams Jayco Formula 4 Championship, before a fruitful Formula 3 test last year gave him the final push towards signing with Douglas Motorsport. The gruelling 24-round season runs from March to September and Randle admits it will be tough to get used to, but an important journey his career has to take. “At the end of the day I’m pretty lucky to be where I am,” Randle said. “I think going over there helps me in a pretty big way - it’s going to be strange, the move to the UK, but hopefully I can accli-

matise to it. “Better car, faster car, better components and a proper engine - a Cosworth engine so it’s the next step up.” Taking his ambitions to their limits, Randle said his focus is on the highest standard in professional racing and knows what it will take to make it into an F1 racecar. “My goal is to become a Formula 1 world champion and the only way to get there is to go down the European open-wheeler path and to know it’s becoming a reality is pretty awesome,” Randle said. “I’d love to get into Formula 1, that’s the big dream, so pretty much got to win this championship and that’s what I’m going over for. “It’s no longer just about fun and games - it’s about making a career out of motor racing, so I’m going over there to be really competitive, hopefully win a few races, and hopefully the championship too.” Randle’s first BRDC Championship round will be in Snetterton from 27 March.

Thomas Randle will trade Australian circuits for the thrill of European racing after signing a deal with Douglas Motorsport. Picture: SUPPLIED

Injured ’Rays battle bravely By JARROD POTTER YOUTH GIRLS CHALLENGE SOUTHERN ROUND 1 ILLNESS, injury and overpossession proved the three prongs of Dandenong’s Youth Girls Challenge 2.3 (15) to 3.5 (23) defeat at the hands of Sandringham. With eight first-choice players on the sidelines for injury or illness, it left the Stingrays no choice but to blood its rookies and hope for the best battling the Dragons. Dandenong had more than enough of the ball despite the up-hill battle though. Plenty of opportunities were generated by the midfield, but Dandenong recklessly booted away and gave Sandringham an endless stream of turnovers. Dandenong then tackled Sandringham into oblivion to make amends for the miskicks, but were scarcely rewarded any free kicks for phenomenal pressure, run-down tackles or the Dragons constantly squandering prior opportunity. As hard as the Stingrays would fight to gain possession, it would be for naught as the Dragons’ direct route to the scoreboard proved much more effective. Neither side could muster much scoreboard pressure in the conditions at Frankston Park as both sides mopped up defensively when kicking against the

howling gale. But Sandringham endured, going as far to kick a goal against the buffeting sea-breeze in the second term and holding Dandenong scoreless in the final quarter. Stingrays captain Georgia Walker - who was meant to be rested for this game, but was called in because of the numerous unavailable players - absolutely starred. Her efforts in the midfield caused headaches for the Dragons throughout the game and set up at least the first goal to Brooke Struylaart. Soon after Sam Ryan marked and goaled to push Dandenong to a three-point margin, a gap that would be held throughout a deadlocked and scoreless third term. In the best match up of the afternoon, Walker went toeto-toe with All Australian and Vic Metro star Katherine Smith through the final term as the two showed no sign of easing up against each other. The physicality stepped up another level across the board approaching the final siren as Dandenong barrelled in to the packs and forced Sandringham to up their intensity as well. But Dandenong’s use of the ball didn’t amount to anything tangible score-wise, as the side mustered a single point even with the wind as Sandringham raced away to kick the two match-winning goals.

“We didn’t take our chances and I think their top end players - Katherine Smith, Isabel Huntington - were too good and a class above,” Stingrays coach Scott Gowans said. “They really controlled the game and we really couldn’t control them. “We really played the bottom end of our list - we had a lot of girls we wanted to see and weren’t sure of their positions, so we probably have nine players who would fit straight into our best 18. “That’s a positive, but I thought their endeavour and pressure acts were good and when we played to our structure they actually moved the ball OK.” The loss leaves Dandenong battling to stay alive in the finals race - part of the problem of a short-and-sharp season. Dandenong now has a must win-match against Geelong Western on Saturday morning from 10am if the Stingrays stand any chance of making the top-team semi-finals. Gippsland on the opposite hand had a thrilling come-frombehind win over Geelong Western to take the 5.6 (36) to 3.6 (24) victory. DANDENONG STINGRAYS Goals: S. Ryan, B. Struylaart. Best: J. Season over for Dandenong By JARROD POTTER VICTORIAN PREMIER CRICKET REVIEW - ROUND 16 (Day 2) SEASON’S end came a round early for Dandenong (191) following a demoralising thrashing at the hands of ladder leaders Fitzroy-Doncaster (6/382). As hard as the pasting on the field was, the tough times continued in the change rooms as the group took a long, hard look at itself and its approach heading into the last clash of the year. Steadily chipping away at the visitors’ top order, Dandenong made in-roads bit by bit as the top four departed after 131 runs. But the Panthers couldn’t find the finisher. Needing one or two more strikes in the middle order to really throw a cat among the pigeons, Dandenong instead was left to the devices of middle order batsman Nat Vardi (171no). Taking on the opposition from ball one, Vardi had a field day as he shifted the tide back in the Lions’ favour in tandem with Liam Banthorpe (38). The duo added 152 for the fifth wicket to take the points and then get some important time at the crease before finals. Dandenong could not muster much after the lunch break either, despite the hard yards put in by James Nanopoulos (2/61) and Justin Butterfield (1/63) throughout the day. Vardi went to lunch hav-

Fitzroy-Doncaster batted on after 5pm, leaving more than a few people stunned at the ground, but soon came to their senses after one over from wicketkeeper David Alleyne (0/5). With frayed nerves all around Shepley Oval, the sides agreed to shake hands and leave it at a 191-run deficit. The side was implored by coach Ross Woodall after the game to lift for the final round and stick to the team principle s that served them well throughout the season. Dandenong’s finale is away to Greenvale to cap off the 2015/16 Premier season. Fortunes did however favour

Casey-South Melbourne (188), which ran through Essendon (175) to take its fifth win of the season. Casey had the Dons by the throat early as the top order fell apart under pressure from Brendan Rose (4/30), Nathan Lambden (2/49) and Lee Diston (1/51). The last flourish came from Dylan Hadfield (3/2) as CaseySouth Melbourne booked the 13-run victory. Only Aaron Ayre (48) survived the onslaught, combining with Shane McNamara (49). McNamara would carry on after Ayre became Rose’s next victim, batting alongside Clint McKay (57) to almost snare the win. There was time for one more James Seymour (71no) piece of batting mastery as he flogged anything charging in at him in a run-a-ball half-century. Casey-South Melbourne will host Carlton in its season finale.

Kooweerup celebrate the key wicket of Tooradin’s Tom Hussey during the crunch-clash at the Kooweerup Secondary College. 150472 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS

Three-way struggle By DAVID NAGEL KOOWEERUP and Merinda Park have the upper hand in their threeway battle with Tooradin for spots in the WGCA Premier Division finals series after an absorbing start to round 14 on Saturday. The Demons (0/3) bowled 50 overs before tea to out-pressure Tooradin (168) at the Kooweerup Secondary College, while Merinda Park (9/217) is well on the way to victory over Upper Beaconsfield. The Cobras just need to win to secure their place, leaving the Demons and Seagulls to fight for the remaining shot at the title. Kooweerup -the back-to-back reigning champs- well its default setting is to bowl tight and straight, and move quickly between overs, and it worked a treat against the

Seagulls on the weekend. The scoreboard would suggest that Dylan Sutton (48) and Josh Lownds (42) had the Seagulls cruising at 2/110, but that’s a false representation of the true state of play. The reality is the Demons were applying the ultimate in team pressure and it was only a matter of time before the Seagulls cracked. Chris O’Hara (5/33 off 17) and Jess Mathers (4/50 off 26) were the best of a Demons attack that bowled an over every two minutes and 48 seconds prior to tea. “We had a good chat last week about blokes not doing the hard yards with the bat, and they really took it on board,” were the words from Merinda Park skipper Danny Diwell after his side rolled through the 200-run mark at Upper Beaconsfield. Looking shaky at 4/56, the Co-

bras rebounded on the back of fine knocks from Paul Filippone (48) and Diwell (36), who shared a critical 72-run stand for the fifth wicket. Tommy Tyrrell (3/39), Jayden Joyce (2/53) and Scott Pitcher (2/59) then clicked in to a new gear for the Maroons, having the Cobras at 8/155 at one stage before the experience of Jamie Smith (36 not out) and Jason Toan (13) saw their team to day-one honours. The expected dead-rubber between the top-two teams in the competition, Pakenham (4/50) and Cardinia (108), turned into a game that could have serious repercussions, come finals time. Both sides are locked in for a home semi-final, so the result is largely irrelevant, but a serious thumb injury to Lions’ skipper Dom Paynter could be a defining moment

of the season. A master of all three departments of the game, Paynter’s expected absence will be a huge loss for the undefeated Lions who are looking to become the champions of West Gippsland for the first time since 2001. Russell Lehman (6/32) was the star for the Lions on Saturday, proving too hot for all bar Ben Maroney (24) and Luke Turner (24) to handle. The Bulls bowlers fought back strongly in the final 23 overs of play. And in the final game, Shameera Weerasinghe (67) was the sole shining light for Cranbourne Meadows (171) against Emerald (0/25). Weerasinghe took his season aggregate to 618 with his fighting knock, while Hashan Goonetilleke (4/34), Ian Litterbach (2/34) and Clint Marsh (2/38) were best for the Bombers.

Ultimate fight is on for last finals spot By JARROD POTTER DDCA TURF 1 - ROUND 10 (Day 2) THE race to the DDCA finals finishing-line still is still in the mix as Heinz Southern Districts and Mordialloc will fight for the last spot. SPRINGVALE SOUTH v HEINZ SOUTHERN DISTRICTS Springvale South (212) did its best to halt Heinz Southern Districts (7/256), but fell short in the end after Michael Davies (5/66) went on the warpath. Craig Slocombe (86) fought back against the Cobras’ strike-force, but in the end had little help beyond Harry Staude (37) and Nathan King (22) in the chase. Davies picked up his third five-for of the season to keep the season alive for Heinz ahead of the finale against Parkfield. CRANBOURNE v MORDIALLOC Shattering the hopes of Hallam Kalora Park in a round-about way, Cranbourne (232) succumbed to Mordialloc (8/241) in a nail-biter. The Eagles’ middle order started pecking away at the Bloodhounds’ target

through Lucas Ligt (48), Matt Chasemore (48) and opener Stuart Plunkett (34). But the usualy Mordy suspects - Stuart Squires (3/50), Chathura Athukorala (2/27) Ian Daniel (2/50) started rolling through the Cranbourne order. Chasemore finally succumbed to Daniel at 7/189, leaving a little too much for the tail to gather. LYNDALE v HALLAM KALORA PARK Lyndale (69 and 86) suffered at the hands of Hallam Kolora Park (153), continuing the tough trot towards Turf 2 with another outright defeat. Ben Montgomery (30no) was gallant in the second innings, holding out despite the Hawks’ best efforts. With only a one-dayer left in the season though, the Hawks and Ridges respectively have bowed out of the finals hunt. PARKFIELD v BERWICK Berwick (7/212dec) left scant regard for Parkfield (148 and 0/58) as the visitors hunted down the par target comfortably. Berwick’s middle order stood tall as usual with Ryan Crawford (49no) leading the way, while Jarrod Goodes (37), Josh Holden (36)

and Nathan Pilon (23) all contributed down the order. NARRE WARREN v DANDENONG WEST Dandenong West (184) did its best to hunt down Narre Warren (9/240dec), but in the end the Magpies flew too high for the Bulls to smash apart. Sam Bracey (71) continued his stellar season with another half-ton, but in the end the Bulls couldn’t generate a match-winning stand as Chris Edwards (4/33), among others, ran riot. TURF 3 Beaconsfield’s (3/128dec and 2/85) march to the finals remained on track with an outright terrorising of Doveton (118 and 93). The captain-coach Dylan Frietag (6/39) scattered the Doves with a sensational first up spell - as Doveton fell to 6/28 after Josh Battle (7) left cheaply. Isaac Newstead (27) almost carried the bat as he was the last man to fall as Glen Scales (3/18) finished the job. Gehan Perera (33no) and Matt Golding (21no) did the heavy lifting to secure the Tigers another outright win and clinch the minor premiership a week early.

THE RSL’s winning streak of four games in a row came to an end with a 26 shot loss to Burden Park. The four points were still valuable as they kept the team in second spot on the ladder. Results Daniel Muir, Mat Hogan, Bill Bradbury, Steve Hickson 26-24. Reviews and news…

Citroen DS bounces back By ALISTAIR KENNEDY THE subject of this week’s road test review is the Citroen DS5. Actually, that’s not quite true because Citroen has decided to follow the direction taken by a number of other brands by creating a luxury sub-brand and calling it DS. In doing so Citroen has resurrected one of most recognisable of automotive names; the Citroen DS19, launched in 1955, was one of the most charismatic and influential cars of its era with its distinctive styling and revolutionary hydro-pneumatic suspension system. Although the name may be familiar the DS badge bears no relationship to the iconic Citroen inter-linked gears chevron. We came across several observers who were puzzled by the badge, indeed one asked us if it was a new Chinese brand. Not so, the DS is very French with all the passion and frustration that we expect from the Gauls. We love the looks of the DS 5. The exterior styling has a blocky, semiSUV look that fits well with current fashion while the frontal styling draws inspiration from the original DS. The sculpted, vertical grille has the new DS logo at the front and centre. The chrome grille surround and the large chrome stripe running from the

top of the grille to the front of the side windows is another retro touch, taking us back to a time when chromed brightwork was everywhere. Headlamps and fog lamps are both LED while the car rolls on 18-inch alloy wheels. As stylish as the DS 5 is on the outside it’s even more so when you step inside. It’s beautifully sculpted and elegant, yet modern and innovative. The driver and front passenger are isolated from each other in their own separate cockpits. They even have their own individually controlled fixed glass roof - what a great idea - with a third one for the rear seat passengers. The bulky centre console - or rather the lower central console, there’s effectively another one on the roof - has the window controls and door locks. The central roof console includes switches for the three sunroof blinds and, oddly enough, one for the retractable head-up display, as well as sunglass holders on either side. Reachable storage spaces are limited with the window controls in the centre console and the gear lever leaving minimal space to store anything larger than the smart-key in the one small alcove. On the positive side there is a phone-sized space tucked in at the bottom of the dashboard and the centre

The very French DS 5 is a stunning looker, both outside and in.

MODEL RANGE DS 5 DSport 2.0-litre turbo-diesel five-door hatch: $56,990 (automatic). DS 5 DSport 60th Anniversary 2.0-litre turbo-diesel five-door hatch: $59,990 (automatic).

storage box is both long and deep. The only drink holders are at the front of the door pockets meaning that you have to stretch well forward to use them. Not only is this inconvenient but also a safety hazard and we opted to do without drinks after day one of our week-long test drive. A tall, rectangular analog clock at the top of the dashboard adds class. Rear passenger space will prove a little cramped for adults where adequate legroom will require negotiations with front occupants and headroom will cause a problem for anyone approaching 1.8 metres. The boot is large (465 litres to the

top of the rear seats) and functionally shaped although the high loading lip could prove awkward. To coincide with the 60th anniversary of the launch of the Citroen DS19 a limited edition version of the DS 5 was released. Some remain in stock with dealers, but you might have to move quickly. Over the standard DS 5, the Anniversary edition adds over $7700 worth of specification for just $3000 more, at a recommend price of $59,990, and includes a truly standout DS roof sticker featuring the DS logo, 19-inch Cairns alloy wheels in a gold colour and Premium paint. The only engine offered with the

DS 5 is an upgraded version of the 2.0-litre turbo-diesel used in the previous Citroen DS5. Power has been increased from 120 to 133 kW. Torque is significantly higher, going from 340 to 400 Nm with the peak unchanged at 2000 rpm. Despite this improved performance listed fuel consumption drops significantly, from 6.1 to 4.5 litres per 100 kilometres. Other engines, both diesel and petrol, are produced but at this stage there are no plans for them to be added to the Australian range. Infotainment features are controlled through a 7.0-inch touchscreen which replaces 12 previous dash buttons
