CLINTON Fraser says he’s not a religious man.

But after the Cranbourne father-ofthree collapsed from a heart attack last month and came back from the brink of death, the 46-year-old admits he has more than a little luck on his side.

“Yeah it’s made me think gee, it definitely wasn’t my time,” Clinton told Star News.

“Because two days earlier when it was 38 degrees I went for a run up in Lysterfield Lake by myself, doing hill work, and I had the chest pain.

“Had I collapsed at Lysterfield I would not be here today.”

Clinton is here thanks to the quickthinking of a number of people who rushed to his aid, performing CPR and did their best to keep him stable before the paramedics arrived.

These people, including Clinton, are all members of the Berwick Springs Parkrun group who exercise every Saturday morning.

On this particular Saturday – 19 December – Clinton had just finished doing his warm-up lap with his 17-year-old son, Jeremy, when he began to feel dizzy.

“I was over away by myself and I remember saying out loud ‘Jeremy I don’t feel well’ and then I just started turning in a circle and that’s when

I collapsed,” Clinton said, who has vague recollections of being resuscitated before passing out again.

He was then rushed to hospital and remained unconscious for the next two days.

Clinton was told his blood flow stopped for as long as 20 minutes at one point.

Later the doctor approached Jeremy and the rest of Clinton’s family in the hospital ward to tell them to prepare for the worst.

“The doctor said it’s quite severe what happened and they weren’t sure if he was going to make it or not,” Jeremy said.

“We were quite surprised he recovered so quickly.”

In this moment, when Clinton finally opened his eyes, Jeremy rushed to hug his father and hold his hand.

From his own perspective, when he woke in the hospital bed Clinton remembers hearing the surgeons talking about an intravenous tube.

“I tell people this, I felt like I was in my stomach and I followed the tube out, into the bright light,” Clinton said.

“And that’s when I woke up.”

the first time since his heart attack.

Although he’s not allowed to run again yet, he was welcomed with open arms and overwhelmed to meet up with the people who had helped save his life.

Among them was David Cunningham, who had suffered his own heart attack six months earlier and was one of the first people to rush to help Clinton.

“It was awesome, I thoroughly enjoyed that, meeting all the people that helped save my life, and were there on the day,” Clinton said.

Heat on cold callers

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH MEMBERS of Clyde-Cardinia CFA have warned residents to be on their guard after a scam phone call asked for hundreds of dollars to be donated to the brigade on Melbourne’s hottest day of the year.

Cold calls were made to Casey residents on Wednesday 13 January asking for donations of $100 to $200 be made to the brigade.

Clyde North resident of three years Chris Moore said when he received the call on Wednesday he knew something was up.

“They told me they were publishing a newsletter for the Clyde CFA which was going to all members and crew,” Mr Moore said.

“The voice sounded like a middle aged male and said how hard firefighters work during the heat and to show your appreciation by donating a couple of hundred dollars.”

Mr Moore immediately warned the Dandenong CFA head office before he phoned back the caller’s number 30 minutes later without getting an answer.

“I have no idea how they got my mobile number and I’ve never received a call of this nature before,” Mr Moore said.

Mr Moore has since heard of one other Clyde resident who received the call at an earlier date and another similar scam claiming to represent the police.

Clyde CFA captain Ken Blencowe told Star News that the brigade wanted to act fast once it heard the “disappointing” news.

“We immediately posted on our own Facebook page to warn people it was a scam,” Captain Blencowe said.

“We never phone anyone asking for donations - instead we knock on doors in CFA uniform and have ID on us.”

Capt Blencowe said the brigade would alternatively letter box drop with its PO Box for cheque donations to be sent.

Booked for break A VICTORIAN police crackdown over the Christmas period caught 443 drivers breaking the law on Casey roads.

As part of Operation Roadwise, police with back-up from the TAC saturated Casey, with 17 State Highway Patrol units and six booze buses dotted throughout the region.

From 13 December to 3 January, Casey police caught eight drink-drivers, 21 drug-drivers, 29 people using a mobile phone behind the wheel and 24 disqualified drivers.

However most of the fines went to speeding drivers - with Casey police charging 179 people over the 22 days.

Unregistered vehicles almost made up a quarter of the fines with 100 tickets issued and 43 unlicensed drivers were caught during the blitz.

Twenty one drivers were seen not wearing a seat belt while driving and 18 people were caught disobeying traffic controls.

Before the monster operation, Cranbourne’s Acting Senior Sergeant Pat McGavigan told Star News that it was Casey’s number one ranking in Victoria for severe road trauma.

“It’s very disappointing why someone would want to use our brigade name to scam money and we were worried people would get the wrong idea about the Clyde CFA. “It’s a good wake up call for brigades in the area and we are going to have to be very wary.”

Capt Blencowe believes the scammers chose the hot total fire ban day on purpose to make the calls and advertise the scam.

“I think they targeted this time of year and thought they’d jump on board and get some money,” he said.

“And if anyone wishes to make a donation to the Clyde brigade please contact us directly.”

Police are currently investigating the scam which was made using a mobile phone.

POLICE are searching for a man who broke into the Cranbourne Centro shopping centre at night before fleeing when he was disturbed by a cleaner.

The man broke into the High Street shopping centre between 12.45am and 12.55am on Saturday 2 January and tried to get into the Vodafone store but ran away when he saw a cleaner.

The man had parked a van (pictured) on the shopping centre roof before jemmying the nearby sliding doors.

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH WEAPONS and explosives offences and sexual assaults in Casey have jumped during the last 12 months, the latest crime statistics show, contributing to a 16.4 per cent increase in overall crime.

Casey ranks third behind Greater Dandenong (17.7 per cent) and Cardinia (21.9 per cent) for the highest crime growth in the Southern Metropolitan region since September 2014.

The steady climb in offences

puts Casey in Victoria’s top crimeprone areas - but region Inspector Paul Breen said it’s important to compare the hike with other growing municipalities.

“Casey has a very strong population growth up to 10,000 people per year,” Insp Breen said.

Over the past year sexual offences jumped 39 per cent on last year’s figures and weapons and explosives offences climbed 55 per cent.

One of the biggest jumps was robbery up 38 per cent and drug manu-

facturing increased by 32 per cent.

But Insp Breen said police made several arrests late last year, which lifted offence statistics.

“Casey police have identified a number of criminal identities in the area and of course many criminals carry weapons,” Insp Breen said.

“But it’s a sign that we are getting out there and identifying these issues and sending them to the courts.”

the stats revealed a spike in burglary and break and enter which were up 17 per cent on last year.

And stalking, harassment and threatening behaviour as well as drug use and possession had increased 25 per cent.

Insp Breen said he encouraged all Casey organisations to continue working diligently with police.

“That relationship with the community helps us put into action crime prevention strategies and target recidivist offenders,” he said.

Christel tastes sweet success

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH LYNBROOK trainee chef Christel Darion will be among alumni such as renowned chef George Calombaris as she takes on a Masterchef-like competition next month.

A cooking student at Dandenong’s Chisolm Institute of Tafe, Christel, 27, is one of 32 finalists in the Australia wide ‘Fonterra Proud to be a Chef’ (FPC) competition.

The celebrated FPC intensive educational program will give one lucky winner $7500 to spend on an international culinary paid placement, exclusively tailored to their aspirations as a professional chef.

If won, a placement that would take Christel back to her French roots as she aims to pursue a career in pastry.

“I was so happy to become a finalist, it’s already so great for me, even if I don’t win,” Christel said.

“I would love to have my own pastry shop that’s one of my dreams, coffee and pastry.”

Born in France, Christel arrived in Lynbrook just over a year ago and currently works as a kitchen hand in an Italian restaurant.

And she hopes her experience in the 17th annual FPC puts her in good stead for a fulltime restaurant job.

“I am looking forward to gaining new experiences, meeting other young chefs like myself and learning from the mentors,” Christel said.

The four-day culinary extravaganza will have the finalists cooking their own recipe for the judges, participating in masterclasses and dining at some of Melbourne’s most exciting restaurants.

A passionate kitchen hand, Christel said cooking was as much a hobby as it was a job.

Man charged after Kooweerup abduction

A 34-YEAR-OLD Tooradin man has been charged with several offences after breaching an intervention order and allegedly abducting his son from a Kooweerup address this week.

About 5pm on Sunday 17 January, police were called to

a Henry Street property following a report that the man had attended the property, broken a window and abducted his threeyear-old son.

Following an extensive search, police were able to make contact with the man and recovered the child at 12.15am on Monday 18 January.

The man was remanded in custody overnight and appeared in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court later on Monday 18 January, facing charges of threats to kill, breaching an IVO, and criminal damage.

He was further remanded and will appear again in February.

Ban for the books

By LACHLAN MOORHEAD AN ENDEAVOUR Hills man will turn to the Australian Government for help after his 81-year-old Ahmadi Muslim father was imprisoned in Pakistan last month.

Khalid Ahmad’s father, Abdul Shakoor, who owns a bookshop in Pakistan where the Ahmadi faith is outlawed, made international headlines when he was jailed for eight years in December for selling books deemed hurtful or hateful to another religious group’s beliefs.

The 81-year-old, who has run the book store in Rabwah since 1988, was charged under a set of blasphemy laws which specifically target Ahmadi Muslims, according to the Huffington Post.

Seeking help to save his father, Khalid reached out to the Ahmadiyya Muslim Association of Victoria, based in Langwarrin, and is calling on the Federal Government to use any influence it can.

“The Australian Government can put political stress on the Pakistani government to abolish this law which doesn’t protect us,” Khalid said.

In 1974 the Pakistani Govern-

ment adopted a law declaring Ahmadis to be non-Muslims and the country is reported as the only Muslim country that has used its constitution to persecute a specific group.

Khalid, who speaks to his parents on the phone several times a day, was “shattered” when his mum told him the book store had been raided and his father arrested.

“I rang them and talked to my dad for a few minutes but a few hours later I got a call from my mum

and she told me he’d been arrested and we don’t know where they’ve taken him,” he said.

“I was completely shattered to hear about this.”

Holt MP Anthony Byrne has previously praised the efforts of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Association and highlighted the faith’s persecution around the world in a speech to Federal Parliament.

In 2014 Star News reported on Alam Mahmood Butt from Narre Warren whose younger brother was shot dead by unknown assailants in Kamra, Pakistan, in what was believed to be another targetted attack on someone from the minority Ahmadi faith.

Prior to this, the News reported on Berwick-based Ahmadiyya Muslim Waheed Ahmad Chatha, whose cousin was also fatally shot in Pakistan in what was also thought to be a targeted attack.

Pakistan has the largest population of Ahmadi Muslims in the world, with an estimated 2 to 5 million living in the country.

Jobs shock for Masters hardware staff

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH CRANBOURNE Masters hardware store has been open less than four months, but may close its doors this year after parent company Woolworths Limited announced ongoing financial losses on Monday 18 January.

The Thompsons Road store officially opened on Saturday 10 October, boasting 130 new jobs for locals.

But that job security is now shot as the timber and hardware chain prepares for possible closure nationwide.

In a statement from Woolworths, the company highlighted its operating performance saying that “it will take many years for Masters to become profitable”.

“We have determined we cannot continue to sustain ongoing losses from this business,” the statement

read. A spokesperson for Woolworths said Masters stores will stay open as usual for “some months to come”.

“What we’ve announced is we intend to exit the business,” they said.

“How we exit, which will either be through the sale process or a wind-up process, has yet to be decided and an outcome on this is some time away.”

But some Masters staff may keep ongoing employment within Woolworths.

“If Woolworths is unable to sell all of the business and has to close any of the operations, it will seek to provide alternate employment opportunities within the Woolworths Group to all current Home Improvement employees,” they said.

The Cranbourne store was the 62nd Masters to open in Australia.

Boxing Day bandits make off with boat POLICE have released a photo of a boat stolen from a Cranbourne East property overnight on Boxing Day. The boat had been parked in the driveway and the owners were home - when the boat and trailer were stolen from the Westwood Road home between 10.30pm on 26 December and 8.45am on 27 December.

Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Darron Hedge said the thieves cut the trailer lock before stealing the boat and trailer.

Power tools taken in home smash-up THIEVES stole power tools from an empty Narre Warren house after kicking a hole in the wall to get inside.

They broke into the Walton Court house between 8pm on Thursday 14 and 8am on Friday 15 January and stole a sander, a grinder, a dual saw and an air compressor among some other items.

It’s believed the thieves kicked in the wall near the bathroom, where shoe scuff-marks were found.

Eyesore suburb DURING my early morning walk around the streets of Hampton Park I notice things and what I see is not nice but an eyesore.

In the 43 years we have lived here, I have never seen it so bad - graffiti on the concrete walls and fences near the creek and rubbish dumped on the nature strip on Highland Avenue, which has been there since before Christmas.

A vacant block of land on Village Drive is now a dumping ground.

Dead tree branches down the middle of Pound Road.

The grass cutter just goes round them.

It seems the council and VicRoads are not interested in cleaning up.

However, the worst mess is the amount of rubbish dumped outside the Salvos shop on Stuart Avenue.

Years ago Hampton Park was a clean place to live but not anymore.

Religion is about indoctrinating people into surrendering their capacity to learn how to think independently and to commit to Biblical myths and non-evidenced-based thinking and decision making.

Religion has no place in modern education policy.

Special Religious Instruction has no place in any public education program dedicated to teaching students to think for themselves.

THIS week’s council meeting was extra special for Damien Rosario.

The River Gum Ward councillor was smiling ear to ear to see his wife, Renee, seated in the audience with their newborn baby Xavier.

Xavier, only two weeks old, was born over the Christmas period.

Renee and Xavier were welcomed to the chamber by Mayor Sam Aziz, a very special moment coming nearly three years after Cr Rosario’s only daughter, Amelia, died at birth.

Amelia was cruelly struck with Patau syndrome - a genetic disorder that produces an extra copy of the 13th chromosome.

Since then Renee has helped other families enduring the same heart-breaking diagnosis.

ONE Star News reporter had wishful thinking this week when he hoped to attend a Casey Council meeting and the Australian Open in the same night.

The journalist was making good time, with the council meeting looking like it would wrap up within an hour.

But that was before a prickly motion was brought up during the petition section which saw the meeting delayed an extra half an hour.

The good news is the journo still got to the

TERRY from Narre Warren contacted the News a bit perturbed that Mercedes Benz Berwick is actually in Narre Warren.

But Casey council advises that it has granted an extension on works to start, which must be completed by December 2019.

It’s been a long wait, with the original planning permit released back in 2013.

Thieves steal the free food

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH THE food is given away free of charge to anyone that needs it four times a week - but thieves decided to steal it anyway.

About $500 worth of two minute noodles, muesli bars and food to go was stolen from the Cranbourne Regional Uniting Church food truck on Sunday 13 December.

The Reverend Wendy Snook said the fallout from the “sad” incident is long term and the church is still recovering from the incident a month on.

“It’s just really sad that people feel they have to attack something that’s there for the community,” Rev Snook said.

“And, really, it’s the poor of Cranbourne who have suffered the most because the money we’d usually put toward them in free food, coats for winter and toiletries is being used to set up security for the truck.”

The food truck, which is kept on the church’s premises, is believed to have been broken into using bolt cutters about 4am.

And repair and security costs will total about $1000.

“Our special light, which runs off the truck battery, was taken, the wiring that was on the roof of the truck which lights up our security lighting was pulled out,” Rev Snook said.

The City of Casey has given the church an emergency grant to help with the immediate costs and Rev Snook said the church will add extra security cameras.

Site options for tech school THE proposed technical school in Casey will likely be set up at Monash Berwick or Chisholm Tafe.

Councillors discussed the new tech school, which is scheduled to open in late 2018, again on Tuesday night after Cr Wayne Smith called for a meeting with the Andrews government to discuss the proposal last month.

In the lead-up to the state election, Labor promised $125 million for 10 new tech schools in Victoria, with one set to be built in Casey at a cost of about $12.5 million.

Monash University Berwick or Chilshom Institute Berwick Campus have been confirmed as the potential sites for the school,

which will be under a public and private partnership.

According to this week’s council report, Casey’s Economic Development Department has contributed to a proposal for the school, which was submitted to Education Minister James Merlino in November.

The awarded funds for the Casey project are expected to be announced this May, while construction of the school is planned to start in November 2017.

But the latest report notes that secondary students “will not be enrolled in this school”, and instead “will visit it”.

The proposal for the school includes a “business incubator space for industry”, a “provision for research”, a laboratory, and an after-hours facility.

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH BURNING rubber, fierce competition and sparkling chrome had the crowds in a spin at the weekend’s Tooradin Tractor Pull and Truck Show.

Masses piled into Rutter Reserve on Saturday 16 January, and show president Allyn Reeve said the day should provide community organisations with a share in up to $35,000.

“We had around 4000 people turn up which means we’ll be able to put about the same amount of proceeds back into the community as we have in the past,” Mr Reeve said.

The show has been a Tooradin favourite for the past 17 years and had about 85 trucks on show, 40 tractors and more than 45 cars.

Mr Reeve said the event had people waiting at the gates from 8am.

“The tractors are the most popular and we had crowds watching them until 10.30pm,” Mr Reeve said.

But it was afternoon show stopper Justine Mott who pumped up the crowds in her Holden Gemini.

“The crowd was rocking on the fences, they go crazy, they were singing to me as I was walking into the track,” Ms Mott said.

Mum of two, Ms Mott, 33, took her orange beast for a spin in the burn outs display leaving the track in a cloud of pastel pinks.

“We had the most tractors we’ve had in years,” organiser Greg Abrehart said.

Women spread their network STATE Government funding will see an initiative promoting diversity and social cohesion established for women in the Casey area.

The project titled Women Living and Learning Together (WLLT) encourages women across Casey to engage with one another, share experiences and develop networks.

City of Casey Mayor Sam Aziz believes that the multiculturalism within the Casey area provides widespread opportunities for citizens to diversify.

“Casey is a culturally rich and diverse city with more than

140 languages spoken and almost one third of residents born overseas.

“This is a great strength of our community which we must continue to embrace.

“Through WLLT 35 women have participated, promoting cultural identity through visual art and dance, exploring different religions and documenting their shared journey of migration,” Cr Aziz said.

And Cr Aziz said increased access to programs such as WLLT as a result of government allowances will assist with cultural progression in

“WLLT will be rolled out across Casey’s 12 neighbourhood houses in 2016 to help create connections between people who have different backgrounds.

CRANBOURNE’S own miniature road network, Casey Safety Village (CSV), will be closed until July 2016 for upgrade works.

The safety village will be remodelled as part of road works taking place to the village surrounds.

City of Casey mayor Sam Aziz said the site would have

been disrupted as a result of the road works.

“The CSV has always been a well-utilised facility delivering road and fire safety educational programs to kindergarten and primary school children,” Cr Aziz said.

“And council is pleased to be improving and enhancing it to maintain a high standard facility.”

Students of IDS compete annually at the three leading dance competitions in Victoria – Phoenix Festival of Dance, CSTD Commonwealth and the prestigious Royal South Street Ballarat. Dancers have placed at all competitions taking out the title for Contemporary pieces across all ages several years running.

Students enjoy training throughout the year, working together as a team with the school ethos “Together Everyone Achieves More” always at the forefront.

IDS competition team students participate in special team bonding trips, annual sleepover parties and presentation evenings, creating life-long memories and friendships to treasure.

NARRE Warren Calisthenics Club, continues to grow and has enjoyed another successful 2015 competition season.

As the club logo promotes, ‘Make friends for life’ and this is what its members do.

Last year marked many milestones for a number of girls from the club.

The club has girls who have been members for 10, 15 , 20, 30 and 35 years.

It has had success year after year across all sections, but is proud that it has kept the girls at the club doing a sport they love for so long.

Calisthenics develops strength, flexibility, deportment and co-ordination through its physical items – march, freearm, rods and clubs – while at the same time enhancing grace and poise in aesthetics (an item with elements of ballet) and encouraging girls to express themselves and perform with confidence through singing and dancing.

Calisthenics is such a diverse sport and a team sport.

The club welcomes new members to come and have a go.

Complimentary classes, to come and try calisthenics, are on offer to new members in February.

Former cala girls or those who have experience as a dancer or who are just keen to give it a try can drop by on 1 February and join.

The club competes at local competitions and the juniors, intermediates and seniors go to the Royal South Street competitions in Ballarat (the highlight for every girl - which is performing at Her Majesty’s Theatre).

It holds hold weekly classes in the performing arts hall at Fleetwood Primary School, Fleetwood Drive, Narre Warren.

Education’s full bloom CRANBOURNE’S Royal Botanic Gardens was open for fun.

At its sixth annual event the educational day brought people of all ages together on Wednesday 20 January.

Winning drive for Jack of clubs

By JARROD POTTER MOST golf clubs would quickly patch up a hole in a fence ... but Cranbourne Golf Club doesn’t want to cut off a shortcut to the greens for the club’s rising star Jack Rasmussen.

His love for the sport started young – as he was glued to the televisions watching the action as a toddler – and he’s been hooked officially for a few years now.

“When I was three I’d stay up all night watching the golf with mum – long way back I’ve been into it I think but didn’t know until I was 13 that I really liked it,” Rasmussen said.

“Started doing clinics here when I was about 10 and playing club comps when I was 13 at the end of Year 7.

“In the first place it was dad and the family friends who persuaded me to try it out – was going to give it up to play footy, but then the next year I gave up footy to play golf so that was a big turn in the tables.”

The talented 17-year-old lives virtually next door to the links and has been a fixture at the course since he was 13 and those years of diligent practice have started to pay off.

Despite arriving late for the recently held Southern Junior Classic – Rasmussen shook off a rocky start to power ahead and take the 36-hole event by two strokes.

“I didn’t really have a very good warm up – just got there and ... was a bit headless to be honest,” Rasmussen said.

“Sort of rocked up and picked up one of my friends Robert Taylor who was caddying for me – which was fortunate because I had never played there before – we rocked up really late and hit about six putts before heading out to the tees.

“Started off shaky but I was solid - hit it close enough to hole a few putts and shot three under in the first round and in the second round I hit it a bit better but then didn’t make any putts and shot even 72 –and snagged it by two shots.”

He backed up the Southern victory winning the scratch match play finals at Cranbourne to sweep the weekend and finish on a high note.

He’s been picking up a few wins as of late as the Cranbourne teen also won the Barham Classic last year and hopes to defend his title there later t h i s year.

He also flew up to Queensland and finished equal sixth at the Greg Norman Junior Masters, a notable achievement where he represented Victoria.

Rasmussen wants to work on his short game as well as earn ad-

mission into the Riversdale Cup tournament – and besides those he’ll just follow the year on the green wherever it may take him.

“I want to try to get into the Riversdale Cup – the big amateur tournament – and maybe if I could finish top 10 that would be really good for me,” Rasmussen said.

Officially open season for wildcard Jasika

By JARROD POTTER MAKING the most of his wildcard entry, Omar Jasika excelled on his home court to advance to the second round of the Australian Open.

Raised in Endeavour Hills – where he honed his skills – Jasika, 18, has arrived in the big time after claiming a four-set thriller over hard-serving Ukranian Illya Marchenko.

Not many gave the Australian Open wildcard entrant a chance to advance, but Jasika claimed his pass to the second round the hard way.

Jasika powered through his Grand Slam debut 6-4, 3-6, 6-0, 6-4 as the crowd got behind its next champion-in-the-making.

With the Omar Army – the selfstyled fan club of Jasika – proudly roaring in the background for the 18-year-old, Jasika broke Marchenko late in the fourth set before serving out to take the win in two hours and 34 minutes.

In that tournament, Jasika

showed the first signs of greatness to come when he backed up his doubles victory with Japanese partner Naoki Nakagawa 6-3, 7-6 (6) over Brazillian pair Joao Menezes and Rafael Matos by claiming the coveting boys singles title, knocking over France’s Quentin Jalys 2-6, 7-5, 6-1.

It puts his name up there as one of Australia’s rising star prospects alongside Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis and with his win on Monday, it’s clear many more will remember his name from now on.

“It’s always good I guess to have more up-and-coming Australians and it’s a pretty big honour,” Jasika said in 2014.

“A few more people know my name now so I’m pretty happy for that and hopefully I can get some more results in the future.”

Jasika’s rise through the ranks has him knocking on the door of the world top-200 and he now faces high-power Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the second round.

NAMED for the celestial visitors that dot the local area, Cranbourne Little Athletics Centre hosted the 2016 Meteorite Gift on Sunday afternoon.

Everyone from Under 6s to Under 16s ran in the Gift format event on the Casey Fields track, with staggered starts leading to a fantastic bunch of sprint finishes.

It allowed the local speedsters – from Cranbourne, Casey and Pakenham among seven local Little Athletics Centres – to show off their skills in pursuit of the first medals on offer for the new year whether in 100m, 200m or 400m events.

Cranbourne LAC head coach Mark Jouvelet said the event was named for the club’s mascots from the skies and is always well received by the locals.

“We’re named after what the local area is known for and it’s for the meteorites that have been dropping around here – the football team have their mascots and ours are the Meteorites to celebrate the area,” Jouvelet said.

“It also gives us a chance to show off the district to other visiting clubs and they get to ask what it’s all about.”

The meet also served as practice for the region’s little athletics stars set to descend on the venue for the 2015 Little Athletics Victoria State Track and Field Championships, held next month at the Cranbourne venue.

“This gives a lot of the kids in the local area a chance to experience this venue as State Track and Field will be here in February – those who want to get used to the venue, it’s a great day to get a feel for the track.”

McMaster strikes for Dandy

The Panthers got their chance to inflict maximum damage on Monash Tigers - who are missing international pair Cameron White and Dan Christian to Big Bash duties - but had to bide time before striking.

The Tigers’ openers dug in as Daniel Sartori (31) and Marcus Berryman (24) chewed up the opening hour and helped take the shine off the new rock.

Kooweerup up-and-comer Adam McMaster (5/60) struck first and struck often to claim his maiden five-wicket haul in Premier Cricket. The right-arm paceman was exceptional as he forced the error from Berryman before continuing on with the rest of the attack.

The Tigers didn’t capitulate by any means though - with the recognised batsmen all getting starts, but the problems came in bundles for the visitors.

They fell in clumps to James Wilcock (2/26) - who would’ve shouted himself hoarse from the number of close LBW appeals he generated - and workhorse Justin Butterfield (2/49). McMaster seized the prize wicket of Will Sheridan (18) and once the recognised bats had been sent packing, Monash was left in array at 6/116. The gutsy fightback from Dom Matarazzo (50) and Jack Harper (17) ensured there would be something on the board they could defend as McMaster ramped up for another salvo.

“It was his first five for in the comp and he bowled very well,” Dandenong coach Ross Woodall said about McMaster. “He’s been really impressive this year - really good for us and had a great Under 19 carnival where he took 15 wickets in that tournament.

“Genuine pace bowler and has been

really consistent with us and has been putting the ball in the right areas more often than not.”

Whether the four seamers or the part-time spin of Peter Sweeney (0/27), Woodall thought the collective effort was impressive on Saturday - especially as a new look line-up in many ways this season without Matt Willcocks, Nathan Lambden or Dan Doran.

“I was rapt with our entire bowling group to be fair,” Woodall said. “We

bowled a lot of maidens and put on a lot of pressure and got the rewards - I just thought our constant pressure throughout the day was great.

“First hour - no luck and created a lot of pressure - the pressure we put on them to keep them down to less than two an over and those wickets we took before lunch were important.”

“We’ve got the bowling depth there and while it was always disappointing to lose Lambden and Willcocks - we

knew we had the depth to cover them.

“We’ve recruited a couple of fast bowlers from Ferntree Gully leagues and West Gippsland that will run around in seconds and thirds, so we think the bowling stocks are in good form.”

A steady response from the skipper Tom Donnell (28) and Brett Forsyth (21no) kept Alan Wise (0/7) and company at bay, but Donnell fell on his sword late in the afternoon, skittled by Berryman (1/7) to leave the match in the balance heading into day two.

DDCA TURF 1 - ROUND 8 (Day 1) JUST when Hallam Kalora Park thought the match was leaning in its favour DDCA maestro Steve Spoljaric changes Cranbourne’s tune.

HALLAM KALORA PARK v CRANBOURNE Hallam Kalora Park (0/5) will wonder where its advantage went as Cranbourne (229) slipped the grip to post a sizeable chase.

Chipping away at the top order progressively, the Hawks were on top of the birdy battle against the Eagles as the top four came and went without much resistance. Newcomer Stuart Plunkett (29) saw off the new ball and hit a few into the ropes or beyond, but his luck came to an end at the hands of Chris Pereira (2/40), leaving the Cranbourne middle order exposed.

But such has been the nature of the previous five DDCA seasons; it was too tricky to get rid of Spoljaric - who smashed his third century for Cranbourne and his 12th in this league.

Burdening the batting responsibilities, Spoljaric worked the scoreboard in tandem with Lucas Ligt (16), Cam Dinger (13) and Brandon Tyzzer (20). The tail wagged for the Eagles and allowed Spoljaric to play his natural game - flaying the Hawks about as he notched the century. His scalp fell approaching stumps as Cranbourne hurried ahead to put the last few runs in the ledger. Hallam has quite a climb ahead of it next week facing the likes of Matt Chasemore, Plunkett and Spoljaric.

BERWICK v NARRE WARREN A middle order revival also benefitted Berwick (207) as Narre Warren (3/40) suffered a similar fate to Hallam. The Magpies started gathering wickets as the Bears top order fell for 23. The turnaround was left to familiar faces as Nathan Pilon (39), Josh Holden (30) and Ryan Crawford (17) pushed the run rate upwards.

But Narre wasn’t done and dusted - the usual suspects in Kaushalya Weeraratne (4/81) and Jarryd Straker (4/39) took their time but kept finding inroads further towards the end of Berwick’s order.

Lions set for finals

By DAVID NAGEL PAKENHAM is the only team certain of playing in the West Gippsland Premier Division finals series after a weekend of curve balls for its main rivals.

Cardinia (98 points), Tooradin (90) and Kooweerup (82) split their results one-one over the weekend double-header while fifth-placed Merinda Park (78) is applying real pressure after its two emphatic victories.

The Cobras (2/182) easily accounted for Emerald (179) on Saturday, Dan McCalman (81 not out) and Dylan Cuthbertson (72 not out) sharing an unbeaten 124-run stand after Jason Toan (3/24) had restricted the Bombers prior to tea.

The Cobras (6/207) then made their biggest statement of the season on Sunday with a resounding victory over Tooradin (111).

McCalman (60 not out) was once again the rock, remaining unbeaten for the weekend, sharing a 96-run union with skipper Danny Diwell (67) that pushed the score past 200.

“Danner’s (McCalman) has been fantastic for us all year, he knows his role and provides us with the perfect platform to bat around,” Diwell said.

“It was great to share that partnership with him because that’s what the good sides do, they get good starts and they go on with it.”

The Cobras then dismantled the Seagulls, claiming the key wickets of Tom Hussey (1), Aaron Avery (3) and Bradey Welsh (5) early and keeping their nose to the grindstone.

Pakenham’s Ben Shipperd had a weekend that he won’t forget in a hurry.

Shipperd (3/27) had Matt Bright (7) caught behind by Rob Elston, then John Bright (0) stumped by the same acquaintance before bowling Rob Bright Jnr (0) to claim the first hat-trick of his career.

Sean Gramc (77) and Rob Elston (48) also starred for the Lions who then accounted for Emerald on Sunday.

Shipperd (100 not out) once again provided the highlight, bringing up his maiden century for the Lions with a six off the last ball of the match, the Lions (2/198) chasing the Bombers (9/193) competitive total with apparent ease.

Chris Smith (46) proved the perfect foil for Shipperd, while skipper Dom Paynter (4/25) was potent with the ball and Emerald’s AJ Walker (63) also performed well.

In other games on the weekend, Chris O’Hara (65 not out) and Jess Mathers (3/24) led Kooweerup (4/155) to a crucial victory over Cardinia (7/151) -who had an easy win itself over Cranbourne Meadows (114) on Saturday.

Ben Maroney (3/7), Neil Barfuss (3/17) and Travis Wheller (3/29) were terrific for the Bulls (2/120) before Alex Nooy (67 not out) completed the rout.

A superb half-century from Upper Beaconsfield’s (151) Bath Perera (82) was cancelled out by Tom Hussey (62) and Bradey Welsh (60 not out) in Tooradin’s (3/152) Saturday win at Upper Beac, while Perera (64), Julian Bayard (54) and Tommy Tyrrell (3/24) played key roles in the Maroons (6/266) bounce-back victory over Cranbourne Meadows (7/180) on Sunday.

Big names in Country Week squad eyeing the drought

By DAVID NAGEL THE West Gippsland Warriors will look to break a six-year Country Week drought when this year’s carnival begins on Monday 1 February.

And there will be no excuses for poor preparation or a lack of performance from the 14-man squad, with this year’s campaign purely player driven.

WGCA President Brett Armitage asked the players to take the lead in co-ordinating what will hopefully be the association’s first premiership success since 2009.

Stepping into the lead roles are Emerald’s AJ Walker as captain, his deputies Clyde’s Kyle Brooke and Jason Williams from Pakenham, while Devon Meadows all-rounder Matt Hutchinson rounds out a four-man leadership group.

Brooke said the leaders had pushed hard to be as meticulous with their preparation as possible.

“The first thing we had to do was find out who was available, that’s the big thing with Country Week, it’s a big commitment, and we left no stone unturned in doing that,” Brooke said on behalf of the group.

“From there we’ve come up with a pretty good mix of players, a well-balanced squad with real quality and one that will bond and have a good cultural fit. Sure there are some big names missing but we’ve picked an in-form team and one we’re confident will perform well.”

Only five players return from last year’s squad of 15, with Walker, Brooke, Hutchinson, Kooweerup’s Chris Bright and Merinda Park leg-spinner Dylan Cuthbertson looking to improve on last year’s fourth placing in Division 3.

Walk-up starts that are unavailable include Tooradin’s Tom Hussey, Pakenham all-rounder Chris Smith and Cardinia trio Ben Maroney,

Dwayne Doig and Neil Barfuss, while last year’s skipper Cal O’Hare has moved on to the DDCA. But, as Brooke enthused, this squad does have some real quality.

Rob Elston has been one of the main driving forces behind Pakenham’s resurgence this season, and brings an abundance of turf experience to the table, while Williams, Hashan Goonetilleke and John Simpson have all thrived on turf wickets before.

Jack Ryan and Scott Clark have been in terrific form with the ball, while Daniel McCalman, Alex Nooy and Sam Van Der Zalm have all had consistent seasons with the bat.

Brooke believes the squad has plenty of xfactor and is hungry for success.

“You hear stories from 2009 and those players say the feeling was like winning a grand final at their own clubs,” he said.

“To play for your league and work your butt off and then come home with the ultimate reward, I can’t think of too many things better than that.

Jack Ryan is bowling fantastic at the moment; Wombat (Bright) can take the game away from any team in the blink of an eye and Hutchy’s one of the best all-rounders going around.”

The Warriors started and finished well last year, defeating Wangaratta on day one and Seymour on day four, but lost to Central Gippsland and Goulburn Murray during the middle of the week.

But both of those losses were by single figure margins so - in horse racing parlance - the Warriors have got their foot firmly on the till.

The Warriors take on Colac, Seymour, Warragul and Goulburn Murray but also have to contend with Central Gippsland, Wangaratta and Yarra Valley, who will all be looking to qualify for the Division 3 grand final on Friday 5 February.

Chacon right on the ball

By JARROD POTTER LAST year he held the flags for the men’s final - this year Erick Chacon wants to be an even greater part of the Australian Open action.

Chacon, 15, from Narre Warren South, has been selected as an Australian Open ballkid for a second year.

He developed his passion for the game at St Paul’s Apostle Tennis Club in Endeavour Hills and from there his love of the sport grew to encompass every aspect - not just playing but also being a part of the tennis community as a whole.

“Started in 2011 and I signed up for a local club - St Paul’s - was there for about three years and played competition then I decided because I was busy with school,” Chacon said.

“After I stopped playing I became a ballboy instead and this is my second year.”

He eventually had to give up playing to focus on his schoolwork, but his love of the sport transitioned into running after the balls and being an important part of the Open.

His highlights from his first run as a ballkid are cherished as he watched a number of greats and a few Australians take the court.

“Second year I’ve done it and my first match was (Grigor) Dimitrov and (Tomas) Berdych and I also was the ballkid for (Thanasi) Kokkinakis and (Sam) Groth,” Chacon said.

He wasn’t the ballkid for the finals but was still part of the ceremony as he held the flags - but that’s not where he wants to stand at this year’s final if he gets the chance.

“I was the flagbearer for all of the finals,” Chacon said.

“The men’s final ... even though I like watching the men’s game better - the crowd was going crazy because (Novak) Djokovic won his fourth so the crowd was pretty good.

“I want to be the ballkid in the men’s final this year and we have this award where if you’re the best ballkid you get to go to France to Roland Garros so that’s what I’d like to do.”

Outside of his tennis, Chacon also loves his soccer and hopes to take his striking skills to a school team in the future.

He wanted to thank his parents and God for their support and helping him get his Australian Open opportunity.

RSL pipped at the post

HAMPTON PARK BOWLS PENNANT bowls returned for Hampton Park bowlers and they started the second half of the season with two wins and a loss.

Division 1 were at Cheltenham for another loss and are now in the danger zone of the ladder. Chris Hendrie, John Nunan and Ian Bartlett had the only winning rink - thanks to scoring five on the last end (19-16), while John Wright, Peter Hayden, Shane Collins and Steve Barnes won five of the last six ends for a 20-20 draw.

Shane Hardy, Neville Hendrie, Andrew Brandolin and Warwick Hardy fought hard all day but went down 18-23, and Geoff Ampt, Jack Edwards, Chris Barnes and Laurie Edwards made a late charge but lost 16-25.

Hampton Park (1) 3-73 lost to Cheltenham (1) 15-84.

Division 3 played Hampton RSL at Pound Road for a good win which now has them in the four. Trevor Harbright, Ellen Smith, Geoff Ladner and Mark Paton were the best winners 2515, while Richard Pallet, Dave Clarke, Stan Hatch and Ken Cobden won 20-15 and Heather Naismith, Marion Battaglia, Toni Sutton and Denise Eastick won 18-12. Only losing rink was Aaron Ottaway, Jim Westwell, Ron Beverly and Helen Lambert (16-21).

Hampton Park (2) 16-79 defeated Hampton RSL (1) 2-63.

Division 6 were also at home for a much needed win, this time against Keysborough. Val Moore, Wayne Grimsey, Bill Webb and Ray Wood won 2515, Janice Collins, Jen Sherry, Gavin Wilson and Craig Richards also won (19-21, and Bob Nicol, Lou Soligo, Vince Kovacic and Rob Woff won 1514. Val Simpson, Bill Holden, Jaime Lehmann and Ian Kitt lost 11-20.

Hampton Park (3) 16-72 defeated Keysborough (3) 2-68.

Sunday saw the opening rounds of the Casey Ladies and men’s pairs at Cranbourne.

CRANBOURNE RSL BOWLS SATURDAY DIVISION 2 Cranbourne RSL 69 lost to Mordialloc 73.

In a thrilling encounter the RSL led all day until the shadows of the winning post. Last bowl of the day and the scores were level. The Mordialloc skip aimed at the head trying to dislodge our bowl, and got the slightest touch and we were gone. The gods were not on our side but it was a mighty effort as Mordialloc are on top of the ladder. Ray Chapman’s team had a great day winning by 19 shots.

Reigning titles holders in the Ladies, Hampton Park’s Helen Lambert and Denise Eastick had a bye in the first round and in the second had to overcome a Narre Warren pair. Unfortunately they faltered late in the game to lose.

The Men’s draw saw Chris Barnes and former clubmate Shannon Micallef win their first round 18-13. In the second round they played a Pakenham pair for a win. The win will make it a Hampton Park v ‘Hampton Park’ semi-final. The other Hampton Park combination, John Wright and Geoff Ampt led from the second end and finished with a strong 2314 win, which put them into the semi-finals, due to a bye in the first round.

THE Mazda CX-3 might have been beaten to the market by Nissan, Renault, Honda and Holden, but its late arrival doesn’t seem to have done it any harm at all.

The mini-SUV joins a Mazda line-up of cars that is handing out bloody noses to its rivals using a combination of looks, pricing and specification.

The CX-3 fits right in with the rest of the range while hopefully bringing with it the CX-5’s superior dynamics in a smaller package.

There’s a slightly bewildering array of CX-3s, powered by either a 2.0-litre SkyActiv petrol or a 1.5-litre turbo-diesel.

You can have a bare-ish bones manual front-wheel drive Neo for $19,990 or blow almost double that on an all-wheel drive Akari automatic.

The big seller is the Maxx AWD at around $27,000, give or take a few bucks depending on transmission.

We landed ourselves the toplevel Akari.

This trim level is available with both engines, manual (petrol only) or auto and either driving the front or all the wheels.

Our auto Akari front-wheel drive petrol weighed in at $33,290.

Like many late arrivals, it’s the best looker at the party.

This includes 18-inch alloys, a six-speaker stereo with USB and Bluetooth, rear view camera and reversing sensors, keyless entry and start, cruise control, LED fog lamps and headlights, sat-nav, heads-up display, power everything, auto wipers and headlights, leather trim, (tiddly) sunroof and comprehensive safety package.

There’s just one option (the safety package is optional in lower trims), the evergreen bargain that is the $200 Soul Red metallic paint.

Mazda CX-3 hasn’t got a single bad angle to it, especially in this Akari trim with big alloys and plenty of body-coloured exterior parts.

It’s lithe and athletic-looking, with a good mix of Mazda’s key design elements while managing to shrink the CX-5 without it looking desperate.

Light on the bling and with few unpainted body bits, it also avoids the mini-SUV cliche of trying to look big ‘n’ chunky.

There’s a decent palette of colours, our car coming in the unexpectedly cool ceramic.

Inside is contemporary Mazda, which means clean design and good ergonomics, with a Peugeot-like flair for mixing textures to keep things interesting.

There’s also a Peugeot-like knack for providing an irritating dashboard, in this case Mazda’s central-dial-with-wings that infuriates some in the ‘2 and ‘3 - too-small instruments packed into a big space.
