Amazing inspiration A local mother of two reveals the dramatic inspiration for her self-published children’s book and advice website.

By EMILY ROBINSON “YOU are brave like a lion” and “strong like an ox” are just two positive messages found in a local mum’s new book for children.

What my daughter went through was massive and I just want her to know how brave, strong and amazing she is…

Belmont’s Louise Norton spent a year writing and publishing You Are Amazing for her two-year-old daughter, Ruby.

The book, published in August, was inspired when Ruby was diagnosed with a heart condition and underwent open-heart surgery.

“The journey was extremely difficult,” Louise says.

The registered nurse with two children says her medical knowledge throughout her daughter’s journey was at times confronting.

“Sometimes I knew too much information,” Louise admits.

“My husband is a nurse too and he loved knowing and understanding everything that was going on. But I just wanted to be a mum.

The experience led to Louise creating Little Big Wren, which has a website “helping little and big people to be big things”.

“I’ve been blogging about art therapy techniques,” she says.

“The name Little Big Wren came from finding out what a wren signifies.

“The spiritual meaning of a wren is to have determination, strength and confidence – values I want all little people to have.”

You Are Amazing inspires those values, teaching children they are “incredible and unique”.

The touch-and-feel publication features various textures for children to interact with.

“There’s a mirror, fur, vinyl and a sparkly butterfly,” Louise says.

Newtown graphic designer Jen Morrison created the bright artwork.

“Jen was really good. I was really keen to still be involved with the design process and she was really open to all my ideas and suggestions.”

But publishing the book was not as straightforward as the design process, so Louise went down the path of self-publishing.

“It was an interesting process – I had no idea how to do a book, it was a big learning curve.

“But what I’ve learned from doing all of this is to believe in yourself.

It was such a big thing to do and quite a financial thing as well.”

The book has become a hit with local kids and even the elderly.

“Everyone’s really loved it. I’ve had so many beautiful comments,” Louise says.

“A grandmother with dementia was given one and she absolutely loved it too.”

And Ruby’s response?

“She loves it – but she has no idea why we have the same book around everywhere,” Louise laughs.

“Her favourite page is the one with the lion, I think it’s a common favourite, it just feels beautiful.”

A second book is a possibility but for now Louise is focusing her attention elsewhere.

“I’d love to try getting this book into the Royal Children’s Hospital,” Louise says.

“I researched all different ways to do it. It was never about making money; it was just about publishing this book and sending the message out to the children.

“I couldn’t find anyone in Australia to do a touch and feel book so I had to go offshore.

Eastern Beach, Geelong

IT’S time to SLIP on a T-shirt, SLOP on some sunscreen, SLAP on a hat, SEEK shade and SLIDE on some sunglasses for this year’s beach season.

The art-deco swimming enclosure at Eastern Beach has been a Geelong favourite for generations. The swimming pool is surrounded by a large promenade. The complex also features a shallow pool for the children. Geelong Life Saving Club will patrol the beach on weekends and public holidays through to 26 March.

Some of the beaches along the coast are just too rough for the littlies, so Geelong Coast Kids has put together its TOP FIVE beach destinations for the whole family to enjoy.

Point Roadknight, Anglesea The Point Roadknight reef and sand dune offers protection to the Bay from large swells and southerly sea breezes. The beach is easy to access with public toilets and electric barbecues. During the summer holidays and weekends the beach is patrolled by the Anglesea Surf Life Saving Club.

A cafe also operates over the summer holiday period.

Cosy Corner, Torquay

Barwon River, Barwon Heads Ocean Grove Beach

Cosy Corner is Torquay’s ideal family beach. With sheltered swimming and shading trees, it offers the perfect family environment. Cosy Corner is located between Torquay front beach and the rocks at Point Danger.

Settled around the famous Barwon Heads bridge, this area is perfect for small children. Both left and right sides of the bridge offer wave free areas – a perfect opportunity for kids to build their confidence in the water. A nearby playground is built in sand and is always popular with the children.

Considered one of the safest in the region, Ocean Grove Beach experiences some of the largest summer crowds of all Victorian beaches and is part of a 10-kilometre stretch of sand from “The Rip” at Point Lonsdale to the Barwon River mouth at Barwon Heads.

The calmer waters are great for children.

A quick life summary before motherhood, please.

When you met Chris were you already an AFL fan?

What was most surprising about motherhood?

What did your mum teach you about parenting?

I had a bit of a gypsy lifestyle. I was born in Adelaide but spent six years of childhood in Japan.

I have to admit I wasn’t but it’s definitely grown on me.

What surprised me the most was how responsible I felt for someone else’s life and how scary that was in the beginning.

Mum was good at being firm in a mild-mannered, loving way. I catch myself getting a little snappy at times and think, ‘Hang on, my mum was never like that’.

After school I did my nursing degree in country SA. I then moved to London nursing in cosmetic surgery for two years, then to Brisbane to live with my brother. That’s where I met Chris.

Four years later we moved to Perth for three years when Chris was assistant coach at Fremantle. That’s where we married.

How did Chris propose?

It was actually very romantic.

Earlier that day a girlfriend took me shopping – which later I realised was part of the plan.

Chris organised for me to be whisked away in a chauffeur-driven car to an unknown destination, a gorgeous villa.

He greeted me at the door and announced he was taking me to a magnificent French restaurant.

I said: “But I’ve got nothing to wear”, which was his cue to pull out the dress my friend had sneakily purchased and delivered to him. He proposed with a diamond so I could choose my own setting.

My brother forced me to pick an AFL team to follow when I was 12 and, funnily enough, I picked Geelong. The hilarious part is I picked them because I thought they had the nicest looking uniform with the navy and white hoops – it was all about the aesthetics.

So years later you moved to Geelong, Chris is coaching the Cats and baby Leila arrives. How was her grand entrance?

Well, of course, it’s never as you expect (laughs).

The best advice I was given was don’t go in with a plan. You can have all these grand ideas of what the birth is going to be like but in the end all that matters is that the baby’s healthy.

I was thinking I’d be tough and do it without pain relief but had to concede.

I naively thought it would be a good challenge.

Having a nursing background, I knew it was best to listen to what the professionals told me.

It was all pretty magical.

When you’re pregnant you think so much about the birth and not too much further. In the first two weeks I remember waking up freaking out at the fact that I was in charge of this human life.

I was also surprised at how much it made me want to be a good person for her and that, hey, someone’s looking up to me now.

I want to be a good role model and teach her good values; to be independent, intelligent, unafraid to speak her mind and to realise she can do whatever she wants but that it doesn’t come easy, you have to work for it.

What’s your favourite parenting moment so far?

I was sitting answering emails and noticed things were awfully quiet, so I went to investigate in the toy room and it was full of polystyrene balls that Leila had discovered in some packaging.

She would very calmly say what she didn’t like and that she was very disappointed. That was enough.

She was so great at managing her anger. She didn’t lose control.

How do you juggle work and motherhood?

I don’t think I do (laughs). It’s tricky when you work from home – I’m torn between being present for Leila and working on the business. It’s hard to get the balance right.

I feel guilty when she wants my attention but I have to say, “Mummy’s just got to send this email or post this Instagram”. It’s a constant juggling act.

I’m also aware this age flies so quickly. They’re so much fun when they start showing their personalities.

But I also love what I do and feel passionate about working in it. I just need more hours in the day.

She was having the time of her life.

I’m sure everyone knows how hard it is to clean those balls up.

What can you do but laugh? She was just having fun.

Tell us about your business.

I co-own it with Celeste Robertson and Catherine Brooks. It’s an online skin-care range.

We have 60 brands and for us to stock them they cannot be tested on animals, they have to be environmentally friendly and they must have organic or natural ingredients.

How do you juggle the demands of the footy season and motherhood?

For six months of the year I know whether Chris will be in Geelong or away, so I can plan around that.

However, I do feel like a single mother at times, particularly when I’m hanging out for the weekend, which is of course when he’s the busiest.

I love it in the off-season because we get weekends back and have great family time. Having said that, Chris is great at not bringing work home but having Leila has made things easier for him. Leila can get him out of a bad mood or just help him remember there’s life outside footy.

Which of Leila’s character traits may come from you or Chris?

Stubbornness from Chris, although he’d disagree (laughs), and she’s talkative and social like me.

She’s curious and wants to learn, which is probably both of us, and I think she might have a temper too, which is not me (laughs).

What’s your ideal child-free day?

I love wandering through Boom Gallery and Cafe in Newtown, looking at all the great artwork. They do the best raisin bread with espresso butter.

I love to sit there and leisurely read a mag or book. It’s all about quiet time: no talking, no phones. Then I might have to have a little retail therapy (laughs).

I should throw in a foot massage, too.

What’s your favourite thing to do with Leila?

We love going to the Barwon Heads park near the beach. One of the reasons I love Geelong so much is that you can get in the car, drive 20 minutes down the road and you’re at some of the best beaches around.

We also love simple things like painting on the verandah.

Any plans for more kids?

Yes, we’d like one more.

Not a whole football team?

Definitely not (laughs)!

Do you have a nugget of wisdom for other mums?

Know that you can ask for help and feel okay accepting it. You’ve got to use those resources especially if you don’t have family in the same town.

What goes around comes around.

We try to be superhuman beings and it’s not possible.

There’s no perfect mother but I think that as long as you love your kids and do what’s right for them you can’t go too wrong.

Summer holidays are the one thing young kids and teenagers look forward to for the entire school year, but for some parents it can be a battle with boredom and having literally too much time and so little to entertain their children with.

Whilst teenagers tend to find their own path, younger kids could be different.

So here is a list of 20 great and budget friendly ideas to entertain everyone these holidays!

1. Slip and slide

On a cool summer’s night, heat up the oven or grill and get the kids cooking with homemade pizzas that taste 100 per cent better than the bought ones. Ditch the traditional margherita and let your kids’ imagination run wild!

6. Lemonade stand Pick or buy some fresh lemons and other fruits and make some traditional lemonade and fruit juices! Invite over friends and make some signs to advertise, maybe even donating the money to a charity!

Possibly one of my all-time favourite things to do during summer as a kid and the best part is you don’t even need to buy one from the toy store. Just grab a long piece of tarp, a hose and lots of washing detergent. If you need some more help, just look online for some DIY slip and slides.

Grab a rug, some homemade sandwiches and lemonade and head on down to your favourite park or beach and enjoy the day with the whole family.

Find a free space in the front or backyard reserved just for kids’ antics.

There are cheap seeds or saplings at local hardware stores or nurseries and just show kids the basics. They can then plant and dig away in the beautiful sunshine while you sit back and relax.

Pick a mild day, one that’s not too hot and ride through a local park.

Make sure to pack water, sunscreen and some snacks!

This makes for a fun night with family and friends. Invite your kids’ friends families over and set up the stereo and barbeque. Maybe even some lanterns for decoration.

10. DIY shoe designs Buy some white canvas shoes and some fabric paint pens or sponges. Let your kids make their own with all sorts of colours and designs that they can wear with pride.

11. Friendship bracelets Head to a local craft store and buy some embroidery thread or a friendship bracelet kit and look up some designs online or make your own.

12. Help set up a small business I know that as a kid I was a bit of an ambitious entrepreneur. I had a cupcake business (failed), newspaper business (failed) and a hair bow business (successful). Get your kids to do the same, hand out flyers to your closest neighbours. Some ideas could be dog walking, baking or garden minding. A great way to earn some pocket money!

16. Invest in a hammock Probably one of the most comfortable things to read in, sleep in and relax in. It’s even better that they’re portable but on a beautiful day it’s like heaven.

15. Photography challenge Grab your phone/camera and a list of things to find and take photos of such things as flowers, colours and foods. Try and complete the list with kids in most of the photos (and you too).

17. Head to a museum or art gallery Find a gallery or museum with free or gold coin admission and admire the works on offer. Play a fun game of what’s in this painting and come up with as many ideas as possible.

18. Write letters or postcards Remember that old friend or relative you haven’t spoken to in ages? Get your kids to help you write to them! An old fashioned hello will be greatly appreciated. If you have any overseas family, send them some photos of the kids or your house!

19. Play some board games Pull out the Pictionary and Scrabble because it’s a beautiful day to play a board game. If it’s sunny take it outside!

Maybe even invest in a new board game!

13. Outdoor theatre As a kid I was quite the actor and I would always get together with friends and create plays and then present them to my parents and their friends. Pull out the dress ups and some cardboard and create a set and script. The kids will surprise you with their creativity.

By CAZ MORRIS, PAEDIATRIC OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST, BELLARINE COMMUNITY HEALTH Fine motor development in children is an important skill to enable them to complete a number of daily tasks like drawing and writing, dressing, feeding and play.

Christmas is quickly creeping up, providing the perfect motivation to get your children using and strengthening their fine motor skills. The following activities are designed to encourage your children to use the small muscles of the hands, wrists and fingers. This will help with such fine motor skills as dexterity, fine motor co-ordination and control, in hand manipulation, finger isolation and grasp.

Build a snowman You will need: An empty bottle (a used water bottle works fine), cotton balls, tweezers, clear craft glue, googly eyes, textas that will draw on plastic and not rub off (for example, permanent texta).

How: The empty bottle will be your snowmanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s body. Take the bottle and glue on two googly eyes. Then use your textas to draw on a carrot nose and a mouth. You might also like to draw on a scarf or some buttons down his front.

Next use your tweezers to pick up the cotton balls (snow) and place them into the bottle until he is full to the top.

Replace the lid. There you have your very own snowman!

Some of the activities require the use of scissors and tweezers which are great for fine motor practice however make sure little ones are assisted or supervised.

How: Trace the shape of a Christmas tree onto the green card paper. Trace the shape of a tree trunk on the brown card paper. Cut out your tree trunk and Christmas tree then stick them together.

Next dab spots of the glue onto your tree wherever you would like the sequins to go. Then take your tweezers and pick up the sequins one by one and put them onto the dobs of glue.

Tweezers are excellent for fine motor skill practice as use requires fine motor co-ordination, control and finger isolation! Leave your tree to dry, then you are done! You might like to put a hole in the top of your tree, tie some ribbon through it then use it as a Christmas tree decoration. As well as sequins you may wish to use pom-poms.

Alternatively you could use sticky dots.

Peeling and sticking stickers is also great for fine motor development.

You will need: White paper, scissors, spray bottles, food colouring, water and scissors.

How: First we need to make our snowflakes. For a large snowflake, take an A4 sheet of white paper and fold it in half twice. Then cut out sections of the folder paper in whatever shape and form you like. Then unfold the paper and see your snowflake come to life. Next put some water and food colouring of your choice into a spray bottle. Put your snowflakes onto an old towel or something that is OK to get wet. Then start spraying! Leave the snowflakes to dry. Using trigger bottles is excellent for finger isolation, fine motor control and strength.

Sparkly Christmas tree You will need: Green and brown card paper, sequins, clear drying craft glue, scissors, tweezers.

Spray bottle snowflakes

You will need: Cotton buds/Q-tips, different coloured paints, paper to paint on.

Pine cone decoration weaving You will need: Open pine cones, colourful pipe cleaners, coloured yarn or string, coloured ribbon.

How: Let your children try out wrapping and weaving different coloured ribbons, pipe cleaners and string in and around pine cones. This task is simple and looks bright and beautiful when finished.

You might like to put a tie on your pine cone and use them for a Christmas decoration or place a few of them together in a bowl for a pretty table centrepiece.

How: Either draw or use a stencil/outline of different Christmas themed items such as Santa, Christmas tree, Christmas bauble, reindeer, present etc. Once you have your shape get the kids to dab the end of the cotton bud into the colour paint they want to use and decorate their paper with lots of coloured dots.

So simple and effective!

Have fun creating and crafting Christmas masterpieces with your children while strengthening their fine motor skills at the same time!

Tissue paper Christmas wreath You will need: Paper plates, different coloured tissue paper, glue, pom-poms, pipe cleaners, ribbon, staples and a stapler, leaves, twigs, glitter.

How: Cut the inside of the paper plates out. Take the ring that you have made and glue on scrunched up balls of tissue paper. Let the kidsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; imagination run wild with making their own designs decorating with pom-poms, glitter, pipe cleaners, things from the garden etc.

Once completed and dry, take a piece of ribbon, loop it around and staple it to the top of your wreath to make a hanging point.

By LIA SPENCER IN September, I decided to do the unthinkable in an effort to surprise my younger sister who had just become a new mum. I packed my bags, clenched my teeth and braved a 24 hour trip to Canada with a very busy two year old – alone!

This one is easier said than done…

I couldn’t sleep for days leading up to the trip thinking about what a nightmare it would be if Isla ended up teething or sick while on the plane, or if she decided to throw a tantrum in customs or if she felt like bursting into her very loud rendition of ‘Let it Go’ while others slept (which is actually super cute when we are at home or amongst friends). But thankfully Isla is an experienced flyer and handled the trip like a pro!

After we waved her daddy goodbye at the airport, I held Isla tight as we went through customs. She was too busy checking out all the Dora and Elsa bags other kids had to worry about the long line ahead. Once through, we got sucked into one of many airport gift shops and bought a keychain stuffed monkey to play with until we got on the plane.

She slept for the first flight, which meant she had tons of energy when we got to New Zealand.

There, my fitbit got a huge workout as we travelled up and down the escalators about a billion times until we boarded our second flight – where our luck would have it we got upgraded to a skycouch – a row of three seats in economy which turn into a bed. Isla was then able to sleep for about nine hours out of the 13 hour flight, allowing me to get a little bit of shut eye as well.

would take up little space and a lot of time (stickers, colouring book, flash cards and a new Elsa doll). I also packed lollipops to help relieve the pressure on her ears on take-off and landing, teddy bear biscuit packs, fruit strings, sultanas and some of her other favourite snacks.

My patience was put to the test in Vancouver, when customs and long lines seemed to take a toll on both of us, but the entire trip was worth it when we were reunited with my family in Calgary a short time later.

The two weeks we had in Canada were worth every penny and every second of airport mayhem. Isla had some great quality time with my parents, her aunts and her cousins and we were both pretty sad to leave. The trip back was bittersweet – having to leave one side of her family, but being able to return to the other.

4. Make sure to book a children’s meal.

Most airlines will give you an adult’s meal unless you indicate otherwise.

The children’s meal also comes before yours, allowing you more time to help them eat, clean-up and get organised before it’s your time to eat.

I definitely have a new-found appreciation for parents who travel with more than one child, and though I don’t pretend in any capacity to be an expert in flying with a toddler – I do have a few tips I found helpful with my travels.

1. If possible, book an overnight flight so your child can get some rest. Change them into their pyjamas before the flight and put up the armrest so they can sleep on your lap. If you have a baby under aged two you may be able to book the bassinet seat, which gives them something to sleep in and gives you a lot more leg room.

2. Pack lightly! I packed one book bag with my id, credit cards, passports and medication in the front pockets and packed toys, snacks, nappies and a change of clothes in the main section. I packed my handbag and wallet and other bulky items in my suitcase.

3. Toys and snacks, toys and snacks, toys and snacks! I packed the iPad full of her favourite Peppa Pig and Dora episodes – though she liked watching the cartoons provided on the in-flight entertainment instead.

5. Plan your toilet breaks! I didn’t want to ask the crew or the woman sitting next to us to watch Isla while I used the toilets – but I am sure they would have helped if I had asked. Instead if I knew Isla was getting sleepy, we would go to the toilet before her eyes closed, and once again when they re-opened. We also went before we got on the plane and after we landed.

6. Be patient! This one is easier said than done but the more I tried to relax, the more relaxed I found Isla was. We walked the length of the airports many times, did several flights of stairs and escalators, read books, sang songs, played games and made a few pit-stops for airport potty breaks and cafe treats.

7. Try to have fun! Every time the aeroplane took off, Isla and I would both say ‘3, 2,1 Blastoff!’ and watched the world below from her window.

Every time it landed, we would hold hands and laugh in anticipation. She would squeal with excitement when the tyres reached the runway and I would take a huge deep breath in relief that it was over!

By SALLY NOWLAN, PARKS VIC There are plenty of great places in parks for family picnics and exploring nature within a short drive of Geelong.

The Brisbane Ranges National Park is just over half an hourâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s drive from Geelong, and has lots of good spots to visit that are ideal for all ages.

Anakie Gorge Picnic Area, off Staughtonvale Road, has gas and wood barbecues, toilets, a great gorge walk, and plenty of space for kids to run and play.

Stony Creek Picnic Area, off Switch Road has wood barbecues, toilets and great kid-friendly walking tracks such as the one to Lower Stony Creek Reservoir.

Grahams Creek Picnic Area, off Grahams Creek Road, is smaller and more secluded with a wood barbecue.

Steiglitz Historic Park is also just over half an hourâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s drive from Geelong and is a fascinating trip back in time. Dogs on leads are allowed here.

Bert Boardman Recreation Area, on Maude Steiglitz Road, has gas and wood barbecues, toilets and lots of great open spaces for kids to explore.

Steiglitz Township itself has some great open grassy areas to stop, handy toilets and wonderful historic buildings to check out.

The Crossing Picnic Area, on Hut Road is more secluded and a great spot for kids to get engaged with nature.

It has picnic tables, a wood barbecue but no toilets.

Great Otway National Park also has some excellent family picnic spots, within an hour or less from Geelong.

One of the most spectacular is Sheoak Picnic Area, just inland from Lorne, which has huge trees and beautiful forest scenery. The site is secluded, cool and quiet with picnic tables, toilets and gas barbecues. There is a lovely short nature walk with signage along Sheoak Creek and plenty of space for family barbecues. Several walking tracks leave from here including the Canyon Loop walk (2-3 hours), Sheoak Falls-Castle Rock walk (2 hours) and the Kalimna Falls walk (1.5 hours).

Werribee Gorge State Park is around an hour from Geelong, and has some beautiful spots to stop, swim and picnic.

No dogs allowed.

Meikles Point Picnic Area, on Myers Road, has a wood barbecue, toilets, a swimming hole, wonderful walks, and stunning sunsets on the Werribee River.

Quarry Picnic Area, on Myers Road, also has some terrific walks with wood barbecues and toilets.

Closer to Geelong is the Ocean Grove Nature Reserve which is a great nature playground for kids. Building cubbies and creations from the large amount of timber on the ground is a favorite pastime here. There are also wallabies to watch and an amazing number of different kinds of birds. Tables and toilets are provided at this special reserve which has the last remaining stand of original woodland on the Bellarine Peninsula.

Tips for taking the family for a picnic in a park ■■ Leave your dog at home – they are not allowed in National Parks or in most State Parks and Reserves ■■ Take all your rubbish and picnic gear home with you, and leave the site clean ■■ BYO wood if you want to use the wood barbecues ■■ Make sure wood fires and barbecues are completely out before you leave

Serendip Sanctuary is always a great spot to spend some time among exotic birdlife and special native animals.

There is one picnic area with free undercover electric barbecues and seating. A group barbecue area with a wood fire can be reserved for a small fee. The toilets are suitable for people with restricted mobility. There are four excellent walking trails through the sanctuary, all of them no longer than two kilometres return. The wildlife walk is the most popular for its close encounters with native wildlife like emus and kangaroos. There is fantastic bird watching from viewing areas, bird hides and in large aviaries.

Near Aireys Inlet there are two good picnic spots for family outings. Moggs Creek Picnic Area is on flat ground in a natural bush setting just inland from the Great Ocean Road at Moggs Creek.

There are picnic tables, toilets and wood barbecues. The Moggs Creek Circuit is an interesting walk that follows the fern-lined creek down through the valley, and then climbs up to a vantage point before returning to the picnic area. It’s 1.8km long and takes about 30 minutes. Ocean View walk is a loop walk from here with spectacular ocean views and wildlife sightings. It’s about an hour return.

Distillery Creek Picnic Area is also just inland from Aireys Inlet off Bambra Road and has two picnic areas with tables, toilets and wood barbecues.

There are four walking tracks starting from here, ranging from 30 minutes to four hours. The Nature Trail is a short walk with a great range of native plants and flowers. It also has interpretive signage about the nature and history of the area.

Around half an hour from Geelong at Point Addis is the Ironbark Basin Picnic Area. This site has picnic tables but no toilets or barbecues. However nearby, 100m north of Addiscott Lookout, is the Point Addis Koori Cultural Walk – a clearly marked interpretive trail with signs describing different aspects of the Aboriginal, or Koori, way of life in this area. The walk forms part of the Surf Coast Walk and connects to the longer Ironbark Track. This is also a great place to see many different kinds of sea birds.

Building rocketships, using mathematics to understand the universe, developing scientific tools and experiments, writing timeless songs or poetry. When we ‘put our mind to it’, we can achieve great things! The human mind loves to solve problems. It even looks for problems much of the time. So, let’s examine what it means to ‘put our mind to it.’

Maybe I am trying to solve a puzzle, take measurements to build something or write an essay. Whatever it is, when I ‘put my mind to it’ I am actively, consciously and deliberately thinking.

Another word for this might be concentrating or paying attention.

Even though you were going through the motions you were distracted and not focused on the task of reading. Or have you ever been listening to someone talk, but all of a sudden realise you have no idea what they are talking about, because your attention drifted off?

(This can happen often at school with students, or even in work meetings with adults!) So where did your attention go?

There are numerous times throughout the day that our thinking changes and we don’t realise. It just happens. Rather than having control of thinking, our thoughts can take the driver’s seat and carry us away to all kinds of places.

We can start engaging in what I call non-focused thinking. Sometimes the mind takes us to nice places. Perhaps a daydream about a pleasant past event, or a rewarding future goal.

These kinds of thoughts have enjoyable emotions that come with them such as contentment, happiness and love.

But the mind can also take us to darker places. Perhaps thoughts such as “I am not good enough”, “I am stupid”, “I am unattractive” can enter our mind.

These thoughts can bring with them feelings of sadness, anger and misery.

And the more we have these thoughts, the more they can become a routine place to visit during times of nonfocused thinking.

appear out of nowhere because we have had negative thoughts without even realising it!

The same thing happens when we worry: the more we do it, the more we are likely to do it. We can create the psychological habit of worry, sadness, and fear without intending to.

Luckily, there are things we can do to break these habits of thinking.

1. Get curious about your thinking.

Start to watch it. Ask yourself – what do I think about when I go into nonfocused thinking? (Take a moment now and deliberately think about it. Where do your thoughts take you?) Is it productive? Does it add value to the quality of my mind?

2. Practice mindfulness.

Try to focus on being in the present moment. When a thought comes, acknowledge it, but don’t judge it. Say to yourself “I have just had this thought”, then bring your attention back to the present.

3. Be gentle on yourself.

When you notice you have slipped into unfocused thinking, be kind to yourself, congratulate yourself on noticing and then redirect your thoughts.

4. Seek advice.

If you find you’re very often distracted by unproductive thoughts and thinking patterns, ask your teachers or parents how you can work to change it.

When we start to ‘see’ our thoughts, rather than ‘be’ our thoughts, we gain more control of our emotions and mind.

We can then move back into the driver’s seat, redirect our thoughts and take more productive roads as we move through the day.

By ELISE BLACH AS SUMMER has come around again it’s time to pull out our sand encrusted tube of sunscreen and prepare for the onslaught of Australia’s sweltering sun!

No matter what skin type you were born with, it is always best to treat your skin with care and avoid those skin stinging showers later on!

The sun is the major cause of skin cancer but also triggers our body to produce vitamin D, which is essential for strong bones and overall health.

In summer most Victorians are able to maintain a good amount of vitamin D, however you do not need to fry yourself to achieve this! Sometimes UV radiation can get so strong on a nice January day that it can cause sunburn in just 11 minutes. Whether you’re a beachgoer or a pool swimmer it is vital to have a sunscreen that is SPF 30 or higher. If you are swimming or coming in contact with water, a water resistant sunscreen is even better. It is also a good idea to allow children to apply their own sunscreen, under supervision of course because no-one wants a baby looking like a melted soft serve!

However allowing them to apply it themselves gains their independence and knowledge that it is important to care for their own body.

If you plan on having a full day down at the beach it is important to spend some time in the shade. It not only provides a more cool and comfortable environment, it can reduce the risk of you or your

children getting heat stroke. Drink lots of water and have some downtime in the shade if you find your children are quite active throughout the day. Rash vests are a great invention as they minimise parts of the body to apply sunscreen to.

You may be able to relate to this one mums and dads, as it’s hard enough to get your children to stand still for two seconds, let alone two minutes while you rub sunscreen on them from head to toe!

If your child considers themselves a pretty cool kid, then don’t hesitate to encourage them to wear sunglasses!

Even though they may be covered up with a hat, clothing and

sunscreen, UV rays are still able to reflect and affect their eyes.

Although parents with babies under 12 months old should be encouraged to be kept out of direct sunlight, sometimes it is just unavoidable. Thank goodness there are a few brands of sunscreen out there especially made for babies and toddlers. While they are just as protective, they are gentler for your little one’s skin. However always test on your child’s skin beforehand to make sure they don’t have any allergic reactions.

It seems so simple, especially in this day and age, that we should know the basics by now but sometimes we allow these simple tasks to slide through the cracks with our “she’ll be right mate” attitude and end up with sore skin.

Not only do you end up with flaky skin, it really could lead to something worse down the track. Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. At least two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the age of 70. You would hate to be one of the reasons your children have been diagnosed with skin cancer later on in life because simple preventative procedures weren’t taught or put in place to begin with. However the good news is that skin cancer is one the most preventable forms of cancer if successfully found and treated early.

So see your local GP if you have any concerns about your skin and look after yourself and those around you this summer.

Leaving school? Not sure which way to go?

Here are some options for school leavers.

By MICHELE MITTEN Finishing high school can be a scary experience. Not everyone knows what they want to do next, however having a Year 12 certificate is not always enough these days to ensure a successful career. Further education doesn’t have to be just university.

Diplomas, apprenticeships and traineeships are also other options to be considered.

Many people don’t know what they want to do when they finish school If you’re not sure, that’s OK, as nothing is set in stone. Jobs are no longer for life and the average person makes a career change around five times during their working life. www.geelongcoastkids.com.au

Be open-minded and willing to learn, as jobs change and our likes and dislikes are learned through trial and error.

Your marks don’t define your course or career choice.

Ask yourself why you want to do a course. Is it because you really have a passion for the end job, or is it because of the prestige associated with the job?

Be as honest with yourself as possible.

There are different paths to get to the same result If you don’t get the results you hoped for, remember that there are different ways to getting to the same destination.

While getting good grades gives you more immediate options, in the long term no-one will remember your marks.

They don’t define you and what you will achieve in your career. You could work and then study a little later as a mature student, you could do a different course and transfer over to your desired course at a later date.

Choose the course for you It’s very easy to choose a course or place of study based on what your friends are choosing, or what your parents are choosing for you. It can be daunting going out into the world on your own after having had the security of friendships.

Going straight into work Even if you go straight into a job, remember that there is normally further training at some stage. Starting at the bottom as a school leaver will certainly require training to get to the next level.

Having a gap year Some students choose to defer their studies as they don’t know what they want to do. Others choose a gap year to de-stress from Year 12 exams and travel. Whatever your reasons, make the most of your gap year. Work experience, volunteering, travel and casual jobs all contribute to your future.

Just remember that if you take a year off don’t think you will suddenly realise what you want to do.

Kids say the darndest things What was the most mortifying moment you have had as a parent?

Annette: I have always believed in teaching my children correct terminology for all body parts, which I later regretted.

Being pregnant with my second child, and on bed rest due to severe prolapse, I was dropping my five-year-old at school and he was telling the teacher how happy he was that I was out of bed now. When the teacher said, “oh, has mummy being really sick” he replies “no, her uterus was falling out!”

Samantha: A child in my Prep class once told me that his parents always walk around the house naked!

The funniest bit was that his mum was also a teacher at the school!

Cat: Picking my three-year-old old up from day-care the other week a mum approached me and said “oh you must be C’s mum, my son talks about him all the time. My son says that whenever C isn’t happy with what someone else does he says to them ’my Mum will chop your head off!’ I was absolutely mortified! Especially as we are a very peaceful family, that doesn’t allow any violent TV, etc.

Annie: My husband took my three-year-old son to swimming and they were in the change room when my son said “I can see your doodle Daddy and it’s a super big awesome one!” My hubby was a bit embarrassed when the woman next to him exited her cubicle at the same time.

Kate: My daughter’s prep teacher asked my daughter in her first week of Grade 1 what she liked best about being in Grade 1 and her reply was ’getting a new teacher’ (me, silent gasp, embarrassing giggle, err, um?)

Lyn: Son given a great present by an aunty, didn’t say thank you, just opened the card and said “there’s no money!”

Kelly: Waiting for the person in front of me to be served at the supermarket, my little three-year-old thought it would be a good idea to knock on the ladies fake leg (she was wearing shorts so could see it) and ask “what’s that?”

Ruth: Walking around Bunnings my daughter noticed a man with a rather pronounced abdomen, so she pointed at him as we walked past and announced “look mummy, that man has a baby in his tummy!”

Justine: When sitting around watching the Biggest Loser one night, my daughter turned to her aunty and said “You should go on that show, I think you would win because you could lose so much.” We all just burst into laughter. It sounds cute coming from a six-year-old, not so much from a 46-year-old.

If you could tell your 10-year-old self anything, what would it be and why?

Stacey: Don’t be in a rush to be a grown up. Enjoy every minute of being a kid! All adults see kids and wish they could be that carefree.

Emily: Enjoy being a child. Being an adult isn’t always all it’s cracked up to be!

Luke: Don’t worry about what the other kids at school say, just be yourself. Years from now those other kids will just be a memory.

Kristy: Stay a child as long as you can. Childhood is precious.

Ashlee: Sleep! Become best friends with it and learn all about sleeping in!

Kelly: Go easy on your mum, she really does know best and isn’t out to get you (perhaps I would more likely tell this to the 13-year-old me).

John: Definitely that childhood goes too quickly and that adulthood is not much fun so don’t rush to get there.
