A SAME-SEX attracted student from Emerald Secondary College said her school’s decision to screen controversial LGBTI film ‘Gayby Baby’ would further support those dealing with questions about sexuality and identity.

The Year 12 student, who came out as gay earlier this year, was one of several students planning to attend the community screening, from 6.30pm, on Friday night 28 August. “The screening is about awareness and letting everyone know it’s OK to be who you are ... all people are different and have experiences that are different,� she said.

Gayby Baby, a film about kids growing up with samesex parents, has attracted nation-wide attention, with the New South Wales government enforcing bans against the screening of the film in state schools during class hours.

The VCE student, a key member of the school’s Sexuality and Gender Acceptance (SAGA) group, described the interstate ban as “disappointing�, suggesting her school’s acceptance of sexually diverse individuals helped her come out. “Everyone has the right to be who they are,� she said.

The school screened the film during Wear it Purple day - a day in support of young people irrespective of their sex, sexuality or gender identity.

School principal Mike Jaremczuk said the screening, which invited students and community members to watch voluntarily, complemented the school’s sexuality unit of education. “The film is a reflection on the broader society ... it’s about breaking down stigma and changing people’s perceptions on same-sex attraction,� he said.

Premier Daniel Andrews took to Facebook to condemn the NSW Government over its decision to ban in-school screenings, suggesting the decision would have negative implications on young people struggling to understand their own identity. “All kids need to know there are lots of different kinds of families, and all kids need to know that the most important thing in any family is love,� he wrote. “And this isn’t just about what young people might think of the movie. “I’m also worried about what they might think of themselves. “Young people who are same-sex attracted often lead a quietly difficult life and they deserve our full support. “If you want to talk about things that confuse and distress young people, let’s talk about telling thousands upon thousands of them that they aren’t ‘normal’. “No-one deserves that and it’s just not true. “We won’t put up with this kind of cruel rubbish in our state.�

“I’m so glad this facility is up and running,” Mr Wood said.

“Because not only is it a place to keep fit, healthy, and have fun, but it’s also a central point for the Emerald community to get together too.”

A primary issue Mr Wood wanted to address with this new facility was the lack of public

transport in the hills that forced people have to travel outside the area for recreational facilities.

“It’s about making the area a better place to live,” he said.

“I want to make sure suburban kids are growing up in good communities and can go to nice schools in the area.”

The new basketball centre started construction in May this year and is expected to be complete by this coming November.

These cups are for keeps THE Patch Primary School has been given 25 reusable cups for their lunch orders as part of the school’s sustainability program.

Melbourne-based company Keep Cup has donated the reusable hot beverage cups for the students to use for hot chocolates that come with their lunch orders.

The Patch Primary School has students across all grades working on various sustainability projects where they learn skills to help them improve their environmental responsibility.

As part of Grade 3/4C’s sustainability project they calculated how many disposable cups the school could avoid putting in landfill by using reusable cups.

“We will be saving over 1000 cups from landfill every winter,” said the children during their presentation.

The students wrote letters to Keep Cup with the idea of using their reusable cups to reduce waste.

Senior Account Manager at Keep Cup, Isaac Livett, attended the school’s assembly to present the cups himself.

“It’s very exciting to give these cups in person,” he said.

FEDERAL Member for La Trobe Jason Wood recently visited Emerald Primary School to inspect the new basketball centre funded by the Federal Government.

The new court will be used by the school and the community, with it set to be the new home base for the Emerald Lakers Basketball Club.

“I’m so proud to see this funding commitment of $1.5 million for the construction of a basketball centre at Emerald Primary School come to fruition,” Mr Wood said.

The project was possible through funding from both state and federal funding grants that were awarded to the school to support active participation in sports.

“The school should be congratulated for the use of the money,” Mr Wood said.

“This was a project very focused on community need and is about making sure kids have lots of activities.”

Burglars hit pony club

By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS MACCLESFIELD Pony Club has had a run of break-ins on their premises in the last 12 months.

THE club has had to pay to replace stolen items, from soft drinks and coffee to a PA system and accompanying aerials, first aid kits and copper pipe from

the clubhouse structure.

The burglaries have had a big impact on the club as their limited member base tries to recoup the cost of the stolen items.

Kelly Riedle is District Commissioner for Macclesfield Pony Club and says the break-ins have really affected the running of the club.

“The club is only funded through membership fees and fund-raising,” she said.

The club was forced to hire a PA system to comply with The Pony Club Association of Victoria Rules, which cut into the club's bottom line.

With only 19 members, the club cannot afford to replace all the equip-

ment that has been taken but they are starting to build back up again.

“It’s hard work,” Ms Riedle said.

“We’re such a small club but we’ve been lucky to have great supporters in the community.”

Ms Riedle said the burglaries had changed the way the club operates.

“We just don’t keep anything valuable in there anymore,” she said.

“We have to take everything home with us, which is a huge pain.”

The club has since updated their security system and the windows now all have more secure locks on them.

Briefly Vehicle written off

POLICE are asking witnesses to come forward, after two schools were burgled in the Dandenong Ranges last week.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant, Pat Barrow said that overnight between Thursday, 27 August and Friday, 28 August, the Sherbrooke Community School in Sassafras and the South Belgrave Primary School were broken into.

Police arrested a man near the Belgrave South School, who was interviewed and released, pending further inquiries - Det Sgt Barrow said charges have not been laid “at this point in time”.

“There’s a bit more investigating to do,” he said.

He said there was a “possibility” that the two burglaries were linked, and asked anyone who may have witnessed any suspicious behaviour to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or to file a confidential crime report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.

THE OWNER of a brand-new Nissan Patrol ute has found himself on the market for a vehicle once more, after writing off the vehicle on the Black Spur over the weekend.

Healesville Police Leading Senior Constable Chris Hickey said an Alexandra man was on his way home along the Black Spur near Fernshaw late on Friday, 28 August when he “went off” the side of the spur.

Though LSC Hickey said he believed the driver was not injured, his wallet may have been the car, which was picked up earlier in the day in Ferntree Gully, was written off in the crash.

“It was brand new - and it’s buggered,” he said.

Adding insult to injury, the Maroondah Highway between Fernshaw and the Dom Dom Saddle Car Park was closed for an hour and a half on Saturday morning while heavy haulage retrieved the wrecked car.

Serial drive-off thief A SERIAL petrol thief is being hunted by police,

after four drive-offs in the Upper Yarra region late last month.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant, Pat Barrow said the first drive-off was on Monday, 17 August, at 5.50pm in Launching Place.

Det Sgt Barrow said the alleged thief, a Caucasian woman aged in her twenties to thirties with brown hair, drove off from a service station in a white Ford sedan without paying for petrol.

On Friday, 21 August, the same woman is believed to have driven off from a Woori Yallock service station without paying for petrol at 8.45am.

At 11.30am on Saturday, 22 August, the woman again drove away from Launching Place without paying for petrol.

Three days later, on Tuesday, 25 August, the woman drove away from a Seville service station at 9am - again not paying for her petrol.

Det Sgt Barrow said police believed the same woman and the same car was involved in each drive-off.

By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS THE Green Army team in Mount Evelyn last week celebrated its graduation with a barbecue, officially wrapping up its work at Quinn Reserve and the Aqueduct Trail.

Through the initiative, which gives youths a chance to gain training and experience, nine participants and a supervisor have been carrying out weed control, landscaping and planting at the two Mount Evelyn locations.

Project supervisor, Tiffany Scott, said the participants had their work cut out.

“All the participants were clear on what they wanted to do and the program has assisted them,” she said.

“They have been a really strong team and have supported each other.”

During the six-month project, they also worked on Yarra Ranges Shire sites in Wesburn and Yarra Flats Billabong.

Ms Scott said some of the team had gone on to employment, while others had either furthered their studies or begun study because of the program.

Attending the celebration were Casey MP, Tony Smith, and Yarra Ranges Mayor, Cr Maria McCarthy.

The politicians both started work on this project two years ago, with Mr Smith pledging to have the program delivered when he was in opposition.

“The participants will always remember this time and take the skills they have learnt

with them wherever they go,” he said.

Cr McCarthy said it had been a fantastic outcome for the Yarra Ranges.

“Weed invasion is one of the biggest threats to our flora and fauna in this region,” Cr McCarthy said.

“To help us manage this problem, council needs to work closely with numerous partners including environmental volunteer groups and other land management agencies.”

Meanwhile, both confirmed they are working on securing more projects in the Yarra Ranges in the next round of Green Army projects.

Upcoming projects include those in Monbulk and along sections of the Lilydale-Warburton Trail.

Jack, 9, has a rare life-threatening condition.

He has cerebral palsy, epilepsy and requires a wheelchair for mobility.

Jack’s medical complications put significant pressure on his family and after mum Belinda suffered from two stressrelated heart attacks, the family was referred to Very Special Kids for support.

He is able to stay at Very Special Kids Hospice for respite care, allowing his mother a much-needed break.

Jack’s sister attends the Sibling Program for siblings of children with life-threatening conditions, while his parents, Belinda and Craig, receive emotional support and guidance from a Family Support Worker.

Very Special Kids cares for children with life-threatening conditions by providing a children’s hospice and professional support services to families.

Event organiser Trish Flanagan is encouraging the community to attend the Belgrave South Recreation Reserve on 20 September.

Letters Agenda is the concern IN LANGUAGE remarkable for parroting that of the Burnham Beeches developers, Stephen Hartney (Usual suspects out in force, the ‘Mail’, 18 August) makes some bewildering claims.

Although the developers had unsuccessfully tried to bypass council and community alike by seeking approval direct from the Planning Minister, Mr Hartney calls the enormous grassroots movement expressing grave concerns at the developers’ plans ‘undemocratic’.

Flailing away at all these troublesome residents, Mr Hartney predictably takes aim at their ‘leftist, anti-development culture’.

Sir Rupert Hamer, the Liberal premier who laid down Melbourne’s blueprint for conserving heritage and green wedges, would be rolling in his grave.

The redevelopment of the heritage buildings and associated tourist facilities is not the issue, despite Mr Hartney misrepresenting concerned residents as obstructionist naysayers.

What has alarmed residents is the real agenda of the developers, to carve up the estate into 80 dwellings and walk away with tens of millions of dollars.

Won’t take a ‘no’ ON SATURDAY, 1 August, I was confronted by a group of people at the rear of the Woolworths in Belgrave.

They requested me to tick a form to support same-sex marriage.

I agreed I would tick a form and a lady gave me a biro and turned the form but had the ‘no’ box covered by her finger.

I requested she remove her finger as I wished to tick the ‘no’ box.

Hearing this, the group got agitated and there was a verbal altercation.

I gave my opinion clearly as to why I disagreed and people passing were obviously uncomfortable and did not want to tick the form.

I continued to speak, indicating when God created Adam and Eve and advised them to go forth and multiply, or words to that effect, that none of us would be standing here if there were two Adams or Eves.

Top stars, top coaches, too WE WERE rapt to read of the success of Chris Heckenberg from Monbulk Rangers Soccer Club in being selected for the Victorian Under 19s soccer team (Mail, 25 August).

For the past two years, Chris and his friend, Alan Damen, did a brilliant job coaching our son’s soccer team, the Monbulk Tigers, in the

VCFA Under 8s and Under 9s league, before they had to knuckle down to study this season.

Our boys thought the world of Chris and Alan and so did we parents.

They made soccer fun - I think the kids played for the packet of lolly snakes they’d get at the end of the games - but at the same time, they made sure they laid the fundamental skills that the boys needed to become better players.

I’d also like to pay tribute to Chris’s mother,

Andrea, who never stopped encouraging and advising our boys as well.

Behind every great sporting combination Chris and his sister Emma, who also made the state side - there’s a mother driving the kids to and from training and making sure the house is warm, uniforms are washed and there’s a lovely dinner on the table.

By PETER DOUGLAS IT’S time again for classic car lovers to motor on into Monbulk this month as the town prepares to hit top gear.

Now in just its third year, the Monbulk Classic Car and Bike show will be held on Sunday, 13 September, from 10am to 3pm, after exceeding expectations and helping draw attention to what the township has to offer.

Last year the event drew almost 400 cars and more than 2000 people to the main street, which far outstripped the initial goal of about 150 cars.

Event organisers and president of the Monbulk Business Network, John Coleman, said this year’s event promised to

satisfy the passions of revheads far and wide.

“Our aim has always been to put Monbulk on the map, as a place to visit and shop,” Mr Coleman said.

“The event has grown enormously since it started and we are encouraging all in the community to show their support.

“It’s been a great day, with a variety of activities to see and do, not to mention the quality of cars and bikes on display.”

The event will include swap meets, sales of accessories, and many other professionals exhibiting who complete the restoration and maintenance of the vehicles.

To make the day extra spe-

cial, any money raised through entry fees and donations will be directed to local charities, clubs and volunteer associations.

Mr Coleman encouraged all those interested in a great day out to bring along their family and friends.

He said it was a great opportunity to come and talk to the owners and drivers.

Vote is re-affirmed

By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS YARRA Ranges Council last night rejected a motion to rescind its decision to abandon a planning scheme amendment on intensive farming.

At a meeting on 11 August, council voted down plans to have the amendment and accompanying submission considered by an independent panel.

The motion to rescind the previous decision was lost by just one vote with both sides of the issue presenting passionate arguments.

Marilyn Cumerford of Yellingbo spoke in opposition to rescinding the decision and raised concerns the amendment would open the door for intensive farming practises in the Yarra Valley that would undercut smaller farming operations.

“You can farm but you need to farm traditionally, not intensively,” she said.

“Just because some people were not happy with the last decision does not mean it needs to be revisited. Democracy means sticking to the decisions that are made even if you disagree with them.”

Speakers in favour of the motion

argued that sending the submissions to a panel of experts would deliver a more fair and comprehensive review of the issue.

“We are lumped in with the worse intensive forms of farming under the current definition,” said Andrew Stritch, co-owner of the Happy Valley pig farm in Wandin North. “We want a review by a panel of experts to determine the validity of farming methods on a case-by-case basis.”

Clive Larkman, chairman of Agribusiness Yarra Valley, said those in opposition to this decision did not understand the purpose of the councillor’s motion.

“We are not looking to have the amendment changed today,” he said during his presentation.

“We want this referred to a panel of experts to weigh up all sides independently.

“The way this prohibition is currently means Yarra Valley farmers will end up with only horses, black berries and horticulture,” he said.

Councillors were equally split over the motion to rescind the decision from 11 August.

Cr Cox was concerned a permit system doesn’t always work and

there are always farms that slip through the system.

Cr Cliff said the State Government was currently investigating the definition of intensive animal husbandry and it should be left up to them to decide on the issue.

Cr McAllister pointed out council had surveyed 3000 people and 165 submissions were received against amendment C146 with less than 10 submissions in support.

“The silence has been deafening in support of this motion,” she said.

“If I could change that definition I would, but to open the doors to more intensive farming practises is short sighted.”

Cr Clarke said the council needed a panel of agricultural experts from the minister so the whole state could benefit from it.

“It’s a very complex issue and it should be handled by experts. You can’t expect our planning committee to become agricultural experts overnight,” he said.

Cr Witlox pointed out that two five-minute presentations were not adequate to cover such a complex issue and he would like more information from a panel of experts

before council made a decision like this.

Cr Callahan said he understood the frustration from those opposed but said council had only heard limited people and they are not experts in agricultural practises.

“Lots of industry in the Yarra Ranges is agricultural and five per cent of our employment is in farming,” he said.

“Fairness needs to happen here.

We are not allowing permits here tonight; we want a panel so everyone can be heard.”

Mr Larkman said the decision should be based on fair opportunity.

When asked if he felt it was fair for council to have voted down the motion based on the presentations given in the meeting, he was critical of the missed opportunity for farmers who may have been too busy to attend the meeting.

“Farmers don’t have time to write letters and attend council meetings, they are busy farming,” he said.

Happy Valley pig farm has since altered feeding practises to comply with council prohibitions of farming in green wedge zones.

The community turned out in droves for last year’s annual bazaar, which proved an enjoyable occasion for many.

Bazaar result EMERALD University of the Third Age (U3A) will hold its annual Exhibition and Bazaar on Saturday, 4 October, from 10am to 4pm at the U3A building (402 Main St) in Emerald.

U3A is an organisation that provides educational and social experiences for anyone over the age of 50 who is retired or semi-retired.

For an annual fee, presently $40, anyone joining has the opportunity to attend a wide range of classes or activities including botanical art, poetry, Australian history, photography, creative writing, cosmology, woodwork, patchwork, yoga, table tennis and more.

The Emerald Men’s Shed is an integral part and a highly visibly part of the local U3A. The event on 4 October, open to all, will showcase the work of U3A and, if anything like last year, will be a fun event for all ages.

True blue artist to raise funds Stanley K a right geezer

By PETER DOUGLAS ONE of Australia’s iconic rock musicians is heading to the region to help raise funds for Macclesfield Primary School.

Former front man of rock group Goanna, Shane Howard, is taking his band to the Emerald Town Hall on Saturday, 10 October.

Howard is best known for his 1980s hit song, ‘Solid Ground’, which was the first commercial song to feature a didgeridoo.

The concert has been secured through Red Room Presents, which is an offshoot of the Macclesfield-based Red Room Studios, a recording studio owned and run by Mark Stanley.

Julie Buxton from Red Room said the concert was a coup.

“Mark has always lamented that people living in the Dandenongs often have to leave the mountain to attend gigs with big-name artists, and wondered, why can’t we get artists to come here?” she said.

“So he decided to organise it.

“This will be the first of many

Ms Buxton said the support from local business had been pleasing.

Opening the concert is Irish singer songwriter, Aine Tyrrell, who will also showcase her debut album.

A Clockwork Orange (R) Directed by Stanley Kubrick THERE was me - that is Seth - sitting in the sinny theatre, trying to make up my rassoodock about whether I liked Stanley K’s A Clockwork Orange.

For the longest time, O’ my brothers, I was all on my oddy-knocky in not caring for this film one bit. All my droogs were govoreeting all radostoy about how great this film was, when I found it unbearably camp.

But after watching it again, with a malenky bit of maturity after my molodoy days, I found Clockwork Orange to be a thoroughly intriguing satire.

Malcolm McDowell delivers a right horror-

show intimidating performance as Alex, the sociopathic hoodlum caught and subjected to a bezoomy indoctrination technique to cure him of his violent urges. Juxtaposed against his sadism, Alex’s urbane charm and infantile expressions make him all the more unnerving.

The synthesized Beethoven-influenced score is gorgeousness and gorgosity made flesh, and the classical music gives the ultraviolence scenes a strange balletic quality.

I have a little messel, O’ my brothers, that my prior issue with Clockwork Orange is that it expected us to feel sympathy for a grazhny evil sod.

And somehow, it suc-

ceeds: Alex is stripped of his viciousness, but also all capacity for moral choice (good or evil).

You get a good dose of schadenfreude from Alex receiving the tolchocks of karma, but also fear for him in spite of yourself, as the state doctors and the world he’s released into are somehow even more sadistic than he is.

A Clockwork Orange resolved itself before my glazzies as a confronting, darkly comic movie about free will, and which boldly challenges you to feel sympathy for its protagonist.

So, sincerest appypolly-loggies to old Stanley K, for slagging off his film like I have done in the past.

Early identification of hearing loss and their management will help to improve the social and emotional life of an individual.

Currently, there is no known reason as to exactly why hearing loss seems to increase your chances of getting dementia so greatly, but there are many different theories being bounced around.

These theories are wide in range, like ‘cognitive overload’, i.e., the brain tires itself out because it has to overcompensate to hear things to the possibility that hearing loss is actually an indicator rather than a contributing factor - the loss of the lower frequency sounds could act as a ‘warning sign’ for vascular problems, which would cause both hearing loss and dementia.

Signs and symptoms of hearing loss: • People you speak to sometimes seem to mumble; • Turning up the television volume day by day without realising; • Asking others to repeat if the speaker is facing away; • Speech from a distance is audible but ‘not’ intelligible; • Hard to follow group conversations in presence of other noises; • Women and children are difficult to understand; • People talking to you and walking away, becomes unintelligible; • Some sounds are intolerable and piercing in nature.

ROADS, public transport and ice abuse are the most pressing issues facing rural and regional Victorians, according to the state’s newspaper editors.

Meeting at Parliament House in Melbourne last week, country editors, including from the ‘Mail’, discussed the state’s top concerns with Victorian Shadow Ministers, including Liberal Leader Matthew Guy and Nationals Leader Peter Walsh.

Media representatives travelled from as far as the Wimmera and Mallee to attend the Victorian Country Press Association (VCPA) hosted event.

While roads and public transport are perennial hot topics for most media outlets, it was clear the ice problem had a

profound effect on many in the industry.

Terry Harding from the Wangaratta-based North East Media was one who spoke particularly passionately on this issue.

“This drug affects everyone in our city, from people we see on the street to those we work with and their own children,” he said.

“We can see it on our streets, in our schools and it’s just such a huge problem.”

Mr Harding’s address won much support.

The ‘Mail’ has covered this issue extensively in the past, reporting on multiple drug raids in Healesville in June this year.

SEVERAL CFA brigades in the Dandenong Ranges will open their doors to the community over the next few months.

In order to give the community a glimpse into the work of local CFA members, the brigades will conduct activities on their nominated day, including fire training demonstrations, kids’ activities and sausage sizzles.

Also, Captain Koala will be visiting a few of the open days and kids can climb on the trucks while parents listen to some interesting stories from CFA members.

Among the CFA brigades participating will be: Emerald, Sunday, 4 October; Mount Evelyn, Saturday, 24 October; Cockatoo, Sunday, 25 October; The Basin, Sunday, 15 November; Selby, Saturday, 21 November; Gembrook, Sunday, 22, November; Ferntree Gully, Saturday, 28 November; Belgrave Heights and South, Saturday, 5 December; Olinda, Sunday, 6 December.

CFA Chief Officer, Euan Ferguson, said open days provided a unique opportunity for the community.

“People keen to get involved could speak to CFA members about joining their local brigade,” he said.

“There are plenty of opportunities to volunteer with CFA that don’t just involve getting on a fire truck.”

By JUDY ORREN DIVISION 1 SENIORS Healesville 6.4 (40) d Monbulk 6.3 (39) (qualifying final) HEALESVILLE has held on to win a thriller in what was trying conditions where goals were almost impossible to come by. Healesville led by just one goal at quarter time, but they then didn’t score in the second term while Monbulk only scored one major which tied scores at the half-time break.

The third quarter was a beauty with both sides hitting every contest at a furious pace. It was two goals apiece for the term, but Healesville did get their nose in front as they led by just one point.

The last quarter was a hard slog with scoring becoming very difficult, both sides scored 1.1. for the term, which was enough to see Healesville salute, come final siren which means they will now take on Wandin next week for the right to play off in the grand final. Monbulk will get one more chance as they will battle against Olinda Ferny Creek.

grand final after ending Woori Yallock’s season beating them by a convincing 49 points. Olinda was great in the first half of this clash as their defensive work was first rate. They held Woori to just one goal in the opening term while they booted four. They then held Woori scoreless in the second quarter while they added another four goals to their total to lead by a matchwinning 44 points at the main break.

The third quarter was more of the same as Woori only registered two behinds while Olinda booted three goals to lead by an insurmountable 61 points.

The last quarter did see Woori outscore Olinda 3 goals to 1, but Olinda was well and truly in control as they now look forward to taking on Monbulk next week in another cut throat final.

to hold Kinglake to just one major in that time which saw their lead stretch out to a massive 59 points at the final change. The last quarter saw Emerald finish the day off well as they added another 5 goals to Kinglake’s 2 to win big. Emerald will now await the result of Kinglake and Seville next week with the winner to play off against Emerald the week following.

Seville 10.9 (69) d Thornton Eildon 9.13. (67) (1st semi final) Seville’s final campaign will continue after they held on to beat Thornton in a thriller by just two points.

Seville opened the day well, booting 4 first quarter goals to Thornton’s 2 to lead by 13 points at the first change.

The second term was a tight affair with both sides adding two goals and at the long break Seville’s lead was just 12 points. The third term was a real tight affair with goals hard to come by, there was only one goal apiece scored for the quarter and Seville’s lead was just 11 points. The last quarter did see Thornton try to open up the play a bit more as they started to go on the attack, and it did start to pay off as they began to reduce the margin, they booted 4.4 for the term and looked as though they just may pinch the game but Seville’s 3.1 was enough to keep their noses in front

Junior footballers shine on big stage

By PETER DOUGLAS SOME of the most talented junior footballers in the region showed their skills at Woori Yallock over the weekend.

For many, it would have been the most important game of their burgeoning football careers as they kitted up, warmed up and turned out for the grand final decider in the Dandenong Ranges Junior Football League.

And, there was some fantastic football played, with some great results and wonderful individual performances.

Among the winners on the day were Monbulk (Under 11s), Healesville (Under 12s), Ferntree Gully (Under 12s Girls), Gembrook (Under 14s) and Mount Evelyn (Under 16s).

It goes without saying that this high level of football would not have been possible with the many coaches, umpires, administrators and parents who put in countless amounts of hours.

The end result is some fantastic young footballers who are enjoying participating in sport with their friends and family.

That maroon and gold feeling goes all the way

By BRYAN RAK TWO Monbulk sides played in the Grand Final this weekend at Woori Yallock, which resulted in two premierships for the Under 11s and Under 13s.

This is the junior football clubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most successful haul in its 43-year history.

The Under 11s played against the more fancied Mount Evelyn.

Mount Evelyn was the top side and had defeated the young Monbulk team in the past three meetings.

Mount Evelyn started the stronger and led by seven points at quarter time.

Monbulk clawed back over the next two quarters to lead by two

points going into a tense last quarter.

Coach Passingham, brimming with pride as to the effort of the kids for the three quarters, gave a passionate plea to his charges going into the last quarter to continue the intensity on the slippery Woori Yallock surface.

A tense last quarter say Mount Evelyn level the score with one minute remaining.

A quick break through the centre resulted in a great goal for Monbulk, followed by a siren beating point for Monbulk to take the victory.

Tears flowed from kids and supporters alike after the thrilling result.

The Under 13s, after watching the U11s, were wanting to make it

a double for Monbulk.

However, Emerald came out the first quarter and was clearly the better side with smooth movement across the ground and had the Monbulk players off the bit.

Coach Sands then implored the team to stay strong and stick with the game plan that had got them to the top of the ladder.

A much better second quarter saw Monbulk pile on three goals to three points and go in at half time with an 11 point lead.

Monbulk then won the third and fourth quarters to win by 27 points.

Great skills by both teams entertained the crowd and both sides were worthy grand final combatants.

The attention of the Monbulk

football community now turns to the Daniel Ward-led seniors which take on Olinda this weekend.

Three more wins and the maroon and gold faithful will struggle to remove the smiles.
