In the meantime, the Cranbourne Cricket Club has urged people to write letters of recommendation for Raj to help support their bid to Mr Dutton, while a change.org petition has also been set up.

“All avenues of appeal been exhausted, his government-appointed lawyer has obviously taken him through the whole process ... he’s been denied a visa to stay,” Mr Petrie said.

“His only hope is for the Minister for Immigration to intervene. It’s a last-ditch chance, and it’s probably a 100 to one shot.”

Mr Petrie said as well as being a very good cricketer Raj was “a respectful, polite, very honest, hard-working person” and much-loved member of the team after having joined two seasons ago.

“The club was asked if we’d be interested in taking on the four or five Tamil boys because the only connection they had with this country was through cricket,” Mr Petrie said.

THE Cranbourne Cricket Club is appealing to Immigration Minister Peter Dutton for help in a last-ditch effort to save one of their Sri Lankan-born players from being deported.

Poharjan Rajenthiran, 18, known as Raj, has been moved to Darwin where he awaits deportation after living in Cranbourne for the last two years.

Raj was one of five Sri Lankan Tamil boys the Cranbourne Cricket Club took under its wing with the help of the Life without Borders program, which set up accommodation in Casey for the teenager after his parents sent him to Australia to avoid persecution.

Having now turned 18, Raj’s last chance to stay in Australia is an appeal to the Federal Immigration Minister.

Cranbourne Cricket Club committee member Shaun Petrie said he and others were concerned for Raj’s safety if he were to be taken back to Sri Lanka.

“Having visited Sri Lanka personally, and knowing the ill feelings that many Sri Lankan groups still have toward the already decimated Tamil community, I genuinely fear for Poharjan’s safety if he is indeed returned,” Mr Petrie wrote in an open letter to Mr Dutton.

Chamber boss bows out

CRANBOURNE Chamber of Commerce has a new president.

Mark Carusi stepped down from the position at the group’s annual general meeting at Trios Sports Club on Thursday 13 August.

“When I cast my mind back to 2012 as the incoming president, the chamber was in a terrible state - so bad in fact that I wondered how we had ever stayed afloat,” he said.

“Our membership numbers are on the up and we have also posted a nett surplus this year as a result - the first for quite some time.

“I’m pretty excited about

that. As members, I think you should be as well.

“It is simply the right time to move on.

“The chamber is well positioned to articulate and advocate for the aspirations, needs and desires of our business community.”

Mr Carusi handed over the reins to Andrew Arnold.

Kate Parkinson, Maree Cullinan and Peter Glanz returned to their positions as vice-president, secretary and treasurer respectively.

Mr Arnold has worked in Cranbourne since 1997 and said the suburb was “somewhere out in the bush” when he arrived.

“The rate of growth is extraordinary,” he said.

He operates Cranbourne Family Chiropractic and Wellness Centre with his wife Linda, is passionate about business networking and wants businesses in the area to support each other.

“I believe there is great benefit in cross-promotion,” he said.

Guest speaker and City of Casey mayor Mick Morland spruiked the new council headquarters Bunjil Place, due for completion in late 2017.

He said it would bring in more than one million visitors each year.

CRANBOURNE man Ian Brandon has received a $1000 thankyou for his contribution to the community.

The 54-year-old known widely as Uncle Ian received the Cranbourne Chamber of Commerce’s inaugural Community Award on Thursday 13 August.

Chamber vice-president Kate Parkinson said Cranbourne’s Casey RACE did not employ Mr Brandon, nor was he a volunteer.

“He is a regular member of the Cranbourne community who visits the centre each week for his own rehabilitation,” she said.

“His big smile, kind heart and engaging nature draw staff and members to him.

“Ian has a natural ability to locate people that are lonely or need support, engaging those who otherwise may be socially excluded.”

But Mr Brandon didn’t feel he’d earned the award.

“It’s just what I do every day,” he said.

“It was really humbling actually.

“I was just expecting a free meal and maybe a bit of paper!

When they gave me the money it was just incredible.

“I don’t know whether to use it for myself or to help other people in the community.

“People say to me all the

time ‘I’m inspired by you’.

“I just see it as doing what I’ve got to do. If other people get something out of it, that’s fantastic.

“They brighten my day.

“They don’t realise every individual person brings something to my life.”

Mr Brandon was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) about 15 years ago.

“I was about 38 and I was playing basketball and I got a bit of drop foot and got paralysis down my right side,” he said.

“The doctors thought I’d had a mild stroke. I thought I’d just done the ligaments in my leg.”

Finding out he had MS “really didn’t faze me”.

“I took it in my stride because you don’t get to pick your challenges in life,” he said.

“You just get to pick how you deal with them.

“Over the years, I’ve deteriorated but I’ve always strived to do everything to my best ability.

“I’ve always focused on what I can do, not on what I can’t do.”

Mr Brandon uses a structured exercise routine in lieu of medication.

It includes classes at Casey RACE five days a week spending time with his three grandchildren takes up the other two days.

“It’s a lifestyle for me,” he said.

He makes the three-kilome-

tre journey to the pool on his scooter.

“When I leave here, it can take me up to an hour and a half, two hours to get home because I get stopped to talk to everybody,” he said.

“It just brings so much to my world.

“You wake up in the morning and choose to be happy.

“In life there’s always good and bad. If you focus on the bad you’ll have a bad day.”

About two years ago, Mr Brandon’s fellow hydro pool attendees had been discussing a lunch.

“I got a piece of paper and stuck it up on the notice board and called it Ian’s Lunch,” he said.

“We got about 50 people down there.”

It’s continued at Cranbourne RSL every couple of months since, attracting 30 to 50 people from different cultures and walks of life.

“They probably wouldn’t associate with each other in the normal world but in the pool, everyone’s on the same plane,” Mr Brandon said.

“After a while, people aren’t coming back to do their exercises - they’re coming back to see their friends. They’re part of the community.

“That’s what this place brings.”

New school win

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH AN ISSUE spanning at least 10 years is still in the pipeline for the Cranbourne South Primary School (CSPS) community, but has taken a major step forward with plans for a new school to be built in the Botanic Ridge estate.

Faced with the fear of being relocated to Cranbourne West, many parents protested the move late last year and have recently received some positive news.

In a letter to Neale Burgess, Member for Hastings, Education Minister James Merlino stated that the ‘government is conscious that CSPS currently operates on a constrained site that is unlikely to meet

the community’s need into the future.’

The letter advised that the government has committed to relocating the school to the ‘preferred’ location in Botanic Ridge, as opposed to Casiana Grove estate in Cranbourne West.

The letter also advised that the preferred site was ‘currently unavailable for acquisition as roads and services around the site are yet to be developed.’

Parents at CSPS will eventually have the option of sending their children to two different primary schools in the area.

One to be located on Everlasting Boulevard in Cranbourne West

along with CSPS at their current address until the Botanic Ridge campus is built.

Mother of three Natasha Marsh has been at CSPS for 10 years, and said: ‘Every year for the last 10 years there’s been discussions about this new school.’

“It does need to be relocated but not to Cranbourne West and parents are content with the latest information,” Ms Marsh said.

Celebrating its 60th birthday next year, Ms Marsh said the school needed ‘a lot more than TLC.’ “We don’t have a hall, it’s just a portable room and classrooms are taking over the soccer oval,” she said.

Ms Marsh said even though the news was a step in the right direction for Cranbourne South the ‘land developers of Botanic Ridge and the City of Casey have a lot to answer for.’

“Botanic Ridge has been there eight to 10 years and all they have is a park and a milk bar.

“When they sell a house the buyer is charged a development fee which is meant to be for schools and community centres and it’s all been empty promises,” she said.

After the positive response to his letter Neale Burgess, who has spearheaded the relocation with local parents, wrote on Facebook: ‘A great win for the Cranbourne South community.’

Salvos’ cry for help

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH DONATIONS at the Cranbourne Salvos store are at an all-time low.

Store manager Sheleen Humphrey has worked at the Cranbourne Salvos for four years and said she had never seen donations slump this low.

“In winter time it seems to slow down, we have no idea why,” Ms Humphrey said.

The store is currently running low in ladies and men’s clothing, books and bric-a-brac.

“We aren’t normally lacking in these items throughout the year and it does slow down through winter, but not to the extent it has at the moment,” she said.

After hours dumping is also a concern at the store and Ms Humphrey said the problem has increased since she started out as a volunteer five

years ago.

“Hampton Park and Cranbourne experience a lot of dumping and I think it is partly due to the high tip fees. To dump a bed base at the tip is about $40 and its just becoming easier for people to dump it as the stores because they know it will get moved,” she said.

Ms Humphrey said every morning there would be anything from a bed base, to couches, mattresses, bags of clothes and bikes left at the back door.

“Most of what gets dumped after hours also gets rummaged through and is scattered around the back door, which is really sad because when it gets rained on we have to throw it out,” Ms Humphrey said.

Victims to theft, vandalism and subject to Melbourne’s weather, quality items dumped outside have to be removed at a cost to the Salvos.

POLICE are searching for a boat and trailer stolen from a Lyndhurst nature strip on the weekend.

The Mackay galvanised trailer, carrying a 6-metre fibre glass hull fishing boat, were both taken from outside a Sunline Way property between 10pm and 10.30pm on Saturday 15 August.

Investigators have released a photo of both the trailer and the boat.

The registration of the trailer is 585906.

POLICE are investigating a number of gunshots fired into a building site portable in Cranbourne over the weekend.

It’s believed the shots, fired into the portable set up at the old Shell Petrol Station site on the corner of Cemetery Road and Sladen Street, were fired sometime between 5pm on Friday 14 and 6.30am on Monday 17 August.

CASEY Mayor Mick Morland has thrown his support behind the State Coroner’s findings into the “cluster” of youth suicides in Casey and Cardinia in 2011/12.

Coroner Audrey Jamieson’s findings into the spate of youth suicides in Melbourne’s southeast were formally released last month at an official Department of Human Services briefing.

The findings come after the Coroners Prevention Unit (CPU) completed a retrospective case series examination of suspected suicides and hospitalisation for self-harm among residents of the City of Casey and Cardinia Shire, aged 24 and under, for the period 2007 to 2013.

For suspected suicide, the

CPU found that compared to previous years the frequency and rate per 100,000 population was elevated in 2011, meeting the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention’s definition of a “suicide cluster”.

Cr Morland said he and council supported Coroner Jamieson’s recommendations, which centred on developing a suicide prevention and post-vention response framework, which “has the ability to take into account various socio-demographic and geographic profiles of individual local government areas”.

“Council will continue to work collaboratively with our community, state and federal agencies as well as health providers in providing a range of support services,” Cr Morland said.

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH WITHIN minutes of entering the school gates, Kelli Williams from Metro Trains was inundated with schoolchildren asking if she was from ‘Dumb Ways To Die.’ “It is such a contagious tune,” she laughed.

After letting the Cranbourne students down with her response, Kelli, a Metro Trains authorised officer, began a 45-minute presentation on rail safety.

“I am a part of Metro’s community education unit and we run a question and answer session with the students and teach them about using the rail system before they hit secondary school,” she said.

Ms Williams said along with the serious messages on road safety the ‘Dumb Ways To Die’ song plays a big part in their presentation.

“We teach about the importance of staying behind the yellow line on train platforms, using the crossings appropriately and why it’s important to take headphones out of your ears when walking around train platforms and crossings.

“But as soon as I mention we are going to play the song and the characters walk out the students scream and clap and sing along - they get very excited to meet them,” she said.

Making all the right moves CASEY kids have contributed to recent calisthenics success on the national stage.

Abby Bray, Charlize Bast, Mackenzie Witchell, Katherina Bast and Mackenzie Moreland were on the Victorian State Team that took home five titles out of a possible nine at the National Calisthenics Championships held on the Gold Coast last month.

Their nine months of training paid off with victory in two of the three team competitions and three of the six solo competitions.

Victorian State Team Manager Portia Branton said Victoria was the most successful state overall and the results were outstanding.

“But calisthenics is so much more than results,” she said.

“Being a member of the Victorian State Team is an experience of a lifetime.

“Participants reap the rewards of additional training each week on top of their weekly club class.

“They learn from different coaches, developing their skills in new and exciting ways.”

DOTTED with potholes and uneven ground, one Cranbourne resident wants to see Fairfield Street in Cranbourne resurfaced before the ‘hazardous’ stretch of road causes an accident.

Robert Kuhlmann has lived in Cranbourne for four years and drives along Fairfield Street daily.

After numerous phone conversations with MP Jude Perera’s office, Mr Kuhlmann has received written documentation from the Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan outlining the works done, but says it’s not enough.

“There’s about eight to 10 potholes that I have seen - some would be 12 inches deep and it’s extremely dangerous.

“They keep getting patched up and eight weeks later they have deteriorated again,” Mr Kuhlmann said.

Jacinta Allen wrote to Mr Perera dated Friday 3 July stating that Public Transport Victoria advised her that Metro is ‘aware of the condition’ of the road and ‘is working to improve it.’

According to Ms Allen’s letter some potholes were filled on Tuesday 12 May, but Mr Kuhlmann said the street is still a safety risk three months on.

“A lot of people will just ignore it but to me it’s an accident waiting to happen.

“The street has a lot of buses using it and eroding the road due to the station and if it’s not sufficient to carry that amount of continuous weight it’s going to keep deteriorating,” he said.

I AM writing to refute Mr Glazebrook’s baseless claims in his letter ‘City in a spin’ (Berwick News, 13 August), which makes subjective comments about ratepayers’ money being used to promote political parties or ideologies.

As the writer is well aware, the City of Casey is not politically aligned.

The council prepares its annual, independent budget, based on the specific needs of Casey’s growing, diverse community and is committed to providing infrastructure and services in the community’s best interest.

As council has previously proven, this city and its surrounds severely lack access to arts and cultural facilities and Bunjil Place will meet this critical need.

To achieve the best result for the community, council has advocated to all levels of government for financial support towards the project.

It is clear that Mr Glazebrook has missed the point of the funding.

The Federal Government’s contribution of $10m will reduce the cost of the project to council, support more than 1200 jobs for locals during construction and 53 post opening, and deliver a range of economic benefits.

It is important that Mr Glazebrook’s public claims about council and Bunjil Place be informed by the facts, rather than his own political alignments or personal ideologies.

I WOULD like to set the record straight, regarding Mr Girton and Mr Kotsiras's letter ‘Ratepayers Count’ (Berwick News, 13 August).

The City of Casey’s ability to fund Bunjil Place has always been secure.

The $25.5M allocated in this years’ budget is part of the $125M budget for the project and is fully funded in Council’s Budget and Strategic Resource Plan without having to increase rates to do so.

The $10M from the Federal Government reinforces council’s ability to deliver this much-needed community facility. Council continues to advocate to the State Government for funding, to further reduce the cost of the project to council.

It appears the writers are out of touch with the local community if they are unable to recognise this significant gap in local arts and cultural infrastructure and service provision.

Almost 50 per cent of Casey’s population is made up of students aged under 18 and their families, who are crying out for quality arts and performing venues close to home

Autobarn is coming back

By LACHLAN MOORHEAD AFTER being forced to close for almost three months, and enduring a combined loss of more than $1.5 million, Cranbourne Autobarn is finally re-opening its doors for the first time since the store was ram-raided and ransacked by thieves in June.

While not formally re-opening the family business until next month, store owner John Feehan and staff are planning to hold an unofficial re-opening on Thursday after what has been a harrowing 10-week journey to completely rebuild the Autobahn, located in the Cranbourne Homemaker Centre.

Thieves completely trashed the facility and stole roughly $10,000 worth of products.

About 4am on 3 June the offenders ploughed an allegedly stolen Holden Statesman through the rear roller door of the South Gippsland Highway shop, which is insured, and slammed into bollards inside the building.

They stole a range of items before setting the car on fire and fleeing the scene.

In addition to the stolen merchandise, Mr Feehan said he was forced to write-off about 90 per cent of his stock due to smoke and fire damage, leading to a loss expected to be in excess of $1.5 million.

Mr Feehan said the Cranbourne Autobahn was now “basically a brand new shop from the carpet on the floor to the tin on the roof.”

“They’ve devastated us as a family business - myself, my wife, my daughter and 12

staff,” he said.

“There’s been many sleepless nights and stress. Insurance doesn’t pay straight away so you’ve ‘gotta use your own money in the meantime.”

He said the offenders didn’t realise how much damage they’d caused.

“Think of the consequences of this ... arson is very severe,” Mr Feehan said.

Syria suffers

The Hillcrest Christian College Year 12 student set out to raise money and awareness throughout her school.

“After reading about the crisis in Syria and the awful living conditions of displaced refugees, the Senate (student leadership) team and I felt compelled to do something to help,” Alana said.

Their goal was to go beyond what Australia currently offers in foreign aid and change the perspective of students in the college.

Over three weeks, the Hillcrest Senate members spoke at school assemblies to raise awareness of the Syrian Refugee Crisis, which continued with baked goods being sold through ‘honesty donations’.

The fund-raising finished with a burger barbecue at lunchtime, where 200 burgers were sold.

Students who also donated funds could have their handprint taken on the day along with their names in their library as a visual support of the cause.

“We were overwhelmed by the support from teachers and students, and we hope that the small actions of ordinary people

at Hillcrest Christian College can have an extraordinary impact in the lives of the Syrian people,” Alana said.

“That’s the call we’ve chosen to respond as global citizens.”

Alana’s actions came as she learnt that Syria has been a war zone for the past four years and as a result, 7.6 million people are now displaced inside Syria with another four million who have fled to neighbouring countries now living in severely overcrowded refugee camps.

She was particularly touched when she learned that people have had everything taken away from them, with people losing their belongings, homes, livelihoods, families and even their lives.

Endeavours shine out Business and Professional Services

By CASEY NEILL A PAKENHAM business is helping local manufacturers take on the world - and is among finalists for two Casey Cardinia Business Awards.

MetamorphCG is up for the Business and Professional Services Business of the Year title alongside Hampton Park business Jotterbug Creative and Berwick’s Successful Endeavours.

MetamorphCG was also announced as a finalist in the New Business of the Year category at an event at Monash University’s Berwick campus on 10 August.

Jotterbug and Successful Endeavours also appeared in second categories - Home Based Business of the Year and Manufacturer of the Year respectively.

The winners will be announced at a gala dinner a Cranbourne Racing Centre on 22 October.

MetamorphCG founder and CEO Simon Maselli was working in Singapore when his parents became ill and he moved home to “start something for myself”.

He tells businesses how to manufacture their products better, cheaper and faster, and helps them to negate other factors holding them back.

“We want to see Australians and Australian businesses be at that top end of whatever they’re doing,” Mr Maselli said.

“The way we do that is by providing those higher-end engineering services and those higher-end consulting services

“Our plan is to open an interstate office in the next two to three years, and by 2020 we’re planning to have an international office somewhere.”

Jotterbug Creative’s Natalie Bourke completed an honours degree in graphic design and illustration then moved from the sticks to the big smoke.

She joined a greeting card company in Melbourne and when she wasn’t creating cards, gift-wrap and calendars, she freelanced and explored the more corporate side of the design world.

Ms Bourke created identity and branding for local and national businesses and in early 2010 started Jotterbug Creative.

She describes the business as a small Mac studio with a big heart offering a professional communication service with a hint of fun.

“If you don’t like personalised treatment, face-to-face contact or complete service from concept through to finished product, then you had better look elsewhere,” she said on her website.

Managing director Ray Keefe started Successful Endeavours as a home office

business in 1997.

“By 2005 I realised I didn’t know how to make this thing grow,” he said.

Mr Keefe went looking for a business mentor and tracked down the right one in 2008.

He rebranded the business, repositioned it in the market and moved out of home into commercial premises.

“Four months after that we won Casey Business of the Year,” he said.

The Berwick small business has since collected several award nominations and wins.

Rotarians turn Hook, line and winner to hi-tech plan

CRANBOURNE Rotarians are turning to social media for a membership boost.

President Peter Sorensen was among the board inducted at the recent Rotary Club of Cranbourne changeover dinner.

He told members that the goals for the year ahead would include making better use of social media to spread the word on just what the club was doing for the community.

“We are also looking to increase membership and I hope to achieve this through an increase in community awareness,” he said.

“Plans are well advanced for a number of local and international activities.”

The club’s major fund-raiser for the year will be a charity

Swim with the sharks

By CASEY NEILL MELANIE Ah-Yu and Yannick Cerdor swam with the sharks and survived - and thrived.

Their Officer business L8 Studio won the Shark Tank contest at the Tech-Innovation and Entrepreneurship Expo at the Chisholm Institute Berwick Campus on Saturday 15 August.

Ms Ah-Yu and Mr Cerdor started the home-based business about two years ago. “We saw this as a good opportunity to get some brand awareness,� Ms AhYu said. “We want to start to showcase what we can do and what we can bring to the region. “Basically, we produce 3D architectural images of off-the-plan projects.�

She said the images were not only marketing tools but helped town planners and councils to visualise projects.

She said other companies producing similar images were graphic designers. “They don’t have the architectural background we have,� she said. “We can pick up mistakes graphic designers wouldn’t be able to because they don’t have that background.�

L8 Studio took home $300 in cash and $700 worth of marketing and mentoring for its winning pitch. “We did invest some time in producing our pitch and our material,� Ms AhYu said. “It’s a great opportunity. “The $300 will go back into the business. “Our plan is to keep growing and se-

Third prize went to a drone system being developed at Swinburne University and was $250 in aerial photography or 3D printing.

The ‘sharks’ also shared their stories. “The audience got really engaged

and asked a lot of questions,� Mr Maselli said. “Lots of people after the event were coming up to the panel with different ideas. “There’s plenty of ideas out there. “This event really set a lot of people up to understand what they need to do and the steps involved. “Based on the feedback from most people who had some level of involvement in set up or exhibiting, they would like to see us run a similar thing next year.�

CASEY CITY COUNCIL NOTICE OF INTENTION TO EXCHANGE LAND Casey City Council (Council) gives notice under section 189 of the Local Government Act 1989 (Act) of its intention to transfer the land described below as the “Existing Reserve” to Wickro Pty Ltd (Wickro) in exchange for the land described below as the “New Reserve”.

The New Reserve is currently owned by Wickro, and consists of an area of approximately 578 m² being part of land known as 62 Melville Park Drive, Berwick, Victoria 3806 (being part of the land in certificate of title volume 10397 folio 613), and is identified as ‘“new reserve, reserve to be created in exchange for reserve being closed” on the plan below.

The Existing Reserve is currently owned by Council, and consists of an area of approximately 263 m², being the strip of land known as 62I Melville Park Drive, Berwick, Victoria 3806, which provides pedestrian access from Melville Park Drive to Berwick Railway Station, bus terminal and car park (being the land in certificate of title volume 10373 folio 310), and is identified as “existing reserve, reserve to be closed” on the plan below.

The proposal is that Council will transfer the Existing Reserve to Wickro, as owner of the land adjoining the northern and southern boundaries of the Existing Reserve, in exchange for accepting a transfer of the title to the New Reserve from Wickro (Land Exchange) and Wickro undertaking certain works at the New Reserve, to replace existing infrastructure at the Existing Reserve.

The Land Exchange is conditional on Wickro: 1. constructing a pedestrian path and supporting infrastructure on and within the New Reserve (to replace the pedestrian path and supporting infrastructure on the Existing Reserve); 2. complying with the planning permit granted by Council for the expansion of the residential aged care facility located at 80 Melville Park Drive, Berwick, Victoria; 3. consolidating the land it currently owns (including properties known as 62, 64 and 80 Melville Park Drive, Berwick, Victoria) with the Existing Reserve; and 4. reimbursing any costs incurred by Council in connection with the Land Exchange.

A person may make a submission on the proposal.

In accordance with section 223 of the Act, any person wishing to make a submission must do so in writing by the close of business on Friday 18 September 2015.

Any person requesting to be heard in support of his or her submission is entitled to be heard before Council (or a Committee established by Council for this purpose) or be represented by a person acting on his or her behalf, and will be notified of the time and date of the hearing.

All submissions will be considered in accordance with section 223 of the Act. Hewitt tries it out

CASEY Cavaliers are on the hunt for a new Big V women’s coach after 2015 interim head-coach Tim Hewitt resigned to focus more attention on a different sporting passion.

Hewitt - who also coaches Casey’s VC under-20 girls in the Victorian Junior Basketball League (VJBL) - decided he wanted to put more effort into his triathlon ambitions this summer and focus more on junior development when he takes the under-12 age group responsibilities.

“I took it triathlon probably three years ago as something to do to stay fit,” Hewitt said.

“Was meant to do Ironman Melbourne this year - was a bit crook and injured - and took time off at the start of basketball season.

“It (Big V coaching) took up a lot of my time - training Tuesday, Thursday, weekend games and preparing for it all was up to 15 hours a week of work and that took a fair chunk of my time.

“Also wasn’t exactly sure with me being interim whether I’d coach or not and when the opportunity to work with the under-12

girls came up and I took that straight away.

“The club was fantastic - gave me an opportunity and I took the best of it and want to thank them for taking a chance on me.”

Hewitt took over as interim coach from Tim Parker after Big V round five and his stint in charge of the Cavaliers finished with a 6-5 coaching record to his name.

Hewitt’s Casey side was narrowly eliminated from Big V Division 2 Women’s finals contention and finished fifth and Hewitt will look back on beating the minor premiers Chelsea in a home-court blitz.

“Beating Chelsea at home was probably the highlight of the year they were on top of the ladder, beating everyone comfortably and for us to beat them by 20,” Hewitt said.

“By the end of the season we had an eight man roster - but we ticked through it and just missed out.”

It’s not the end of his senior coaching ambitions, with Hewitt setting his sights on the horizon to get back into the top-ranks after gaining more experience on the sidelines.

“I enjoyed it a lot - it’s a lot different to junior coaching,” Hewitt said.

“With the seniors it’s gamestructure and game-style, how we play, while the juniors is about development and the basics.

“Just want a bit of time off from it (senior coaching) - hopefully spend a bit of time with the juniors and come back in the next three or four years and bring a bit more experience in when I get back.”

Casey Basketball Association vice-president Simon Krug wanted to thank Hewitt for stepping in to the role and admirably pushing the roster ahead despite numerous challenges.

“He wants to concentrate on triathlon and he’ll put all his efforts into the junior program now,” Krug said.

“I think he was exemplary and did a great job getting the girls to where they were especially with a depleted team - as there were resignations and injuries in the end.

“We think he did a fantastic job and certainly want to thank him for what he did for the team.”

Bike champ blitzes field Piper’s dream debut halted NARRE Warren East’s David MacDonald emphatically won the Junior A class at the 2015 Victorian Moto-Trials Championships that took place at Sedgwick on 15-16 August.

The 13-year-old from the Oakleigh Motorcycle Club blitzed his competition and the challenging terrain, dropping just one solitary point from the weekend.

“I went into the competition with the right attitude. I approached it with an open mind.

The terrain and competition was alright, it wasn’t too bad,” David said.

“I pretty much sailed through the course. It was pretty dry, it wasn’t wet at all,” he said.

His most memorable moments throughout the competition included clearing a section first, and completing the whole weekend with just one bad section.

“I only lost a point. I had a very good weekend. I worked hard and it all came together,” he added.

David will head to New South Wales at Pacific Park in two weeks’ time for the Australian Moto-Trials Championships on 29-30 August where he’ll again be aiming to win another Australian title, this time in the Under 13-16-yearold class.

A DREAM debut was cut short for Dandenong Stingray Reece Piper after sustaining a back injury in a sickening collision on Saturday morning.

Called up this week for his TAC Cup debut, Piper, 16, was doggedly chasing down a loose ball in the first quarter when he accidentally collided at full speed with the boundary line fence.

The Berwick footballer was immediately stretchered out of the match and taken to hospital with suspected back fractures, which were later ruled out after preliminary scans.

Piper confirmed to the Gazette on Sunday that he has torn some ligaments around his spine and will be sidelined for at least a month.

“They were pretty confident he had feeling and everything,” Dandenong coach Craig Black said after the match.

“That’s a good sign and hopefully he’s right in a few weeks and right for pre-season.

“He’s a good young kid and I think it showed his competitiveness - even near the boundary.

Scorpions’ hard luck tale keeps going

A hellacious run towards finals has been in full swing for the last three weeks with Casey facing both of the top seeds - Box Hill and Williamstownand set to battle third-ranked Sandringham in the home-andaway season finale.

Gallant efforts from utility Jack Fitzpatrick (four goals) who has relished this VFL season wherever he’s lined up this year - and Berwick in-andunder goal-sneak Nathan Page (three goals) helped drag the Scorpions back into the clash, after squandering an early lead.

The Seagulls built their advantage through the middle terms - booting away in the second term - and held the lead to soar to the comfortable 17-point triumph.

Melburnians in the ranks excelled for the VFL affiliates as Mitch White, Billy Stretch and Mark Jamar put their hand up for senior selection alongside gutsy performances from VFLlisted Page and Tom Muir.

Logan makes her mark with 150 of the best

By JARROD POTTER A SOUTH EASTERN journeywoman is glad to finally find the right place to call her football home.

After going club to club in a football journey spanning nine years already, Logan O’Connell-Webb, 15, has made her base at Lyndhurst Football Club this season and has loved every moment with the Lightning.

Bringing an impressive football resume to Marriott Waters Reserve, including two league best-and-fairests playing against the boys, O’ConnellWebb notched another superb achievement on Sunday as she reached 150 junior matches.

Running through the milestone banner wasn’t the only reason for the resourceful midfielder to celebrate as her Lyndhurst side claimed a 42-point victory over Parkmore in its first ever final.

“It was the best feeling I’ve ever had - just winning in the 150th,” O’Connell-Webb said.

“I take away from that game that Lyndhurst has come a long way from where we’ve started - it’s not just about skill, it’s about gelling together as a team and really pushing yourself.

“I want to stick with Lyndhurst - I went there because it’s a new team and thought I’d go

to a new team and I went there with Brown dog (Emily Browning) and we could give what we’ve learn in the girls footy to the newer players.”

Lyndhurst Youth Girls will face Cranbourne in a preliminary final on Sunday morning and the Lightning star believes her side stands every chance of winning.

“We shouldn’t take this game as if we’ve won everything, we need to keep going at it - you never know what could happen, we could win or lose against Cranny,” O’ConnellWebb said.

“I think we have more than a good shot at beating Cranny, I reckon we’ve got just as much of a shot as winning as they do.

“It would be amazing to make it (getting into a grand final).”

Lyndhurst is not the only place O’Connell-Webb has pursued her football passion this year with the 15-year-old’s plate extremely full with Vic Metro Youth Girls, South East Juniors interleague and the School Sport Victoria under-16 development team duties.

Winning a national championship with Vic Metro was one of many amazing experiences she’s received and O’ConnellWebb is always searching for the next opportunity.

“There was so much that I took away from that - every opportunity in life you have to take it, as you never know when you’re going to get it again as my mum tells me,” O’ConnellWebb said.

The AFL is something she’d love to reach one day, and along the way reach 200 junior matches, but wants the football world to step up the opportunities and provide more avenues for young women in the sport.

“I’ve always wanted to say that girls are just as capable as boys and for girls to be seen as equals they need to be given equality,” O’Connell-Webb said.

“They need to be treated as equals and need to be given the exact same opportunities and then one day we will be the same.

“Not that we’re going to be faster or stronger - but the skill level will even out and girls will be looked at as AFL players.

“It (AFL Women’s match) blew me away - I didn’t expect it to be that good - that’s what I aspire to become an AFL women’s player - but only so much can get me there and I have to do the rest for myself.”

Racing salutes its high achievers CRANBOURNE’S thoroughbred racing industry celebrated the successes of the 2014/15 season at the inaugural Chandler Macleod Cranbourne Racing Industry Awards (CRIAs) on Saturday night.

About 300 local racing participants packed the Cranbourne Racing Centre for the awards night, which was hosted

by Channel 7 racing commentator and former champion jockey Simon Marshall.

One of the stars of the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival, Ken Keys-trained Rich Enuff, was crowned the Cranbourne Horse of the Year from an equally impressive group of finalists.

The exciting colt won the 2014 Listed McKenzie Stakes, Group 2 Danehill Stakes and Group 3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude in a row before narrowly going down by a neck to Shooting To Win in the $1 million Caulfield Guineas.

Eric Musgrove-trained Thubiaan was announced the winner of the Cranbourne Jumper of the Year, in recognition of his wins in the Von Doussa, Brierly and Australian Steeplechase features.

Robbie Griffiths took out the Cranbourne Trainer of the Year after finishing on 102 wins for the season - almost double that of any other local trainer - and another 205 minor placings.

Trevor Rodgers won the Picnic Trainer of the Year and Pat Hyland’s star mare Bonaria was inducted into the Cranbourne Group 1 Club after her upset victory in the $500,000 Myer Classic.

The 2014/15 Chandler Macleod Cranbourne Premierships, for performances on the home track, were also awarded on the night.

There were three special achievement awards presented to Kim Mayberry for most winners from less than 50 professional starters, Enver Jusofovic for most winners from less than 100 professional starters and Nikki Burke for most winners from between 101 and 200 starters.

Cranbourne Turf Club CEO Neil Bainbridge said the first CRIAs were a huge success and they looked forward to making them an annual event.

“We had great support from local racing participants who had a great night celebrating what was a successful season for the Cranbourne Racing Industry,” he said.

“During the 2014/15 season, 149 licensed Cranbourne trainers had a starter.

“The Cranbourne Training Complex produced 6896 starters on Victorian tracks - the highest number from any training complex in the state, and representing 17 per cent of all starters at Victorian race meetings.

“We had 630 winners for the season and 1369 minor placings, collecting a combined total of $18.1 million in Victorian prize-money.

“These are great figures and a testament to the talent, hard work and passion of all those involved in thoroughbred racing locally.”

Ryde stars for Redbacks

By DAVID NAGEL HAMPTON Park and its gun goalshooter Emma Ryde have thrown down the gauntlet to top-of-the-table Narre Warren after inflicting the Magpies' first loss of the season, a 44-40 victory at Robert Booth Reserve.

“She’s a game-changer for us, there’s no doubt about that, but we were really strong all over the court,” Hampton Park coach Kylie Kibble said.

“Both sides were strong, the pressure was fantastic, and it was probably the best game I’ve ever coached in. It was a confidence booster for us but we know it’s not going to be easy to beat them again.”

Sara Drain was brilliant for the Redbacks, playing centre, leading a midcourt rotation that included Zoe Ryde, Chloe Birch, Maddison Hanlen and Cathy Leeves that more than matched it with the Magpies’ highly-rated middle third.

Magpie defenders Tracey Dell and Kara Hargraves now know what to ex-

pect from Emma when the two teams collide again in September.

Coach Jade Heinrich can also work closely with Erin Clark and Leigh Taylor to formulate a way of blocking up Drain.

Doveton, the sleeping-giant of SEFNL, will play finals this year after a devastating second-half performance led to a 12-goal, 52-40, victory over Berwick at Robinson Reserve.

The reigning champs led by just a goal at half-time, but took control of the contest in the third quarter, scoring 13 goals to eight, and then repeated the dose with a 14 goal to eight final term.

Rahni Samason and Cara Humbert were once again outstanding bookends for the winners, while Sarah McDermott and Amanda Goodie signed off with great games for the Wickers.

Beaconsfield finished with a real spring in its step to down Cranbourne by 12 goals, 48-36, at Holm Park Reserve.

The Battle of the Eagles was a tightold affair in the first half, Beacy leading 23-21, before wing attack Georgie Ben-

bow sparked the home side into action after the break.

Benbow had a brilliant second half and her synchronicity with Andi Dickson (GA) and Bianca Sanzaro (GS) was sensational to watch at times.

She struck like a cobra, looking calm and composed before pulling the trigger and firing in pass after quality pass.

Carissa Rakip, Steph Ryan and Jess O’Hanlon, who slipped out of the goalring to play wing attack, were great triers for Cranny.

Third-placed Pakenham has stretched its winning streak to four with a comfortable 47-22 victory over Tooradin at Toomuc Reserve.

The Lions now have one more game, against ROC, to prepare for a qualifying final against Hampton Park, a team they drew with back in round 13.

The two Meaghans, Cook and Winter, were terrific for Kerry Twyford’s side, while Rachel Cole, Dayle Willis and Ebony Dolan were fantastic contributors for the Seagulls. ROC had the bye.

Hampton Park and its midcourt maestro Sara Drain were flying high against Narre Warren on Saturday. The Redbacks won a classic encounter by four goals, 44-40.

Cranny in top form

By DAVID NAGEL CRANBOURNE will launch its premiership assault from top-spot on the South East Football Netball League ladder after a brilliantly executed 86-point victory over Beaconsfield at Holm Park Road.

Cranbourne will now play Doveton in this week’s final round of the season, and then have a week’s rest, before taking part in the second semi-final on Saturday 5 September.

Cranny had to fight hard to break down Beacy but, once it did, it then ran away with one of the more impressive victories of the season.

From the 21 minute mark of the first quarter, to the 15 minute mark of the third, Cranbourne kicked 11 of the next 12 goals to open up a 52-point lead.

“There was a finals like feel to the start of the game and that’s one of the things that I was most pleased with, that we were able to work through that stage of the match and come away with a good win,” Cranbourne coach Simon Goosey said.

Cranbourne’s front-half was awesome, Michael Theodoridis kicking six, Marc Holt five, while Curtis Barker slipped forward to slot four of his own. Taylor Joyce kicked four and Scott Meyer tried his heart out for Beacy, who now has to defeat Narre Warren this week to retain its top-three position.

Pakenham produced its best brand of football in a long time to run out convincing 63-point winners over Tooradin at Toomuc Reserve.

The Lions trailed by eight points at half time, but a barnstorming nine-goal third quarter set them on

the path to victory. Playing-coach Steve O’Bryan played a blinder, kicking five, while Daniel Fry’s four goals and great games from Troy Toussaint and Jake Smith were other highlights of the victory. Youngsters Nick Schumann and Kris Sabbatucci battled out the four quarters strongly for the Seagulls.

Narre Warren will head into this week’s huge clash with Beaconsfield on a high after slamming through 10 last-quarter goals against Hampton Park at Robert Booth Reserve.

The Magpies didn’t look like 112-point winners at half-time, leading by just 23 points, but released the brakes to record an impressive victory.

George Angelopoulos, Kerem Baskaya and Matt Lee kicked three each for the Magpies and Adam Jamieson slotted two for the Red-

backs. Berwick has finished off its home-and-away duties in style, heading into a last-round bye with a 65-point victory over Doveton under its belt.

The Wickers were erratic in the second and third terms, kicking 1.7 and then 3.9 for a two-quarter total of 4.16.

They finished in style however with an 8.2 to 0.1 final quarter to really put their mark on the contest and put the perfect exclamation mark on a great season.

“We really rate Doveton, and they’ve been in good form, so we were really happy with the way we played,” coach Rhys Nisbet said.

Ash Smith and Luke Nelson bagged four each for Berwick and Travis Davis kicked three for the Doves.

Electric dream come true

By PETER ANDERSON THE problem with most electric cars is that carmakers aren’t willing to do something a bit different. Most zappers are based on existing platforms with a few blue lights and modified panels and just aren’t very interesting. Thankfully, Tesla and Nissan are exceptions to that rule.

The BMW i3 is almost completely unrelated to anything else to come out of the Bavarian brains trust and takes zero emissions to the masses with a completely fresh outlook.

BMW i3 comes in two flavours - fully electric BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) or engine-assisted REX (Range EXtender). It’s a simple pricing structure - $63,900 for the BEV and $69,990 for the REX. Our BEV came with 19-inch alloy wheels, keyless entry and start, fourspeaker stereo with DAB and USB, DVD player, climate control, rear view camera, cruise control, sat-nav, auto headlights and wipers, front and rear parking sensors, partial leather trim and voice recognition.

Optional extras include a Harmon Kardon stereo, LED low-beam headlights (standards are halogen, so $1077 well-spent), glass sunroof ($2246) and heated seats ($562). Our test car had those last two, taking the total to $66,708.

Stubby. Short. Chunky. Tall. All of

The BMW i3 truly is a revolution in styling as well as technology. these adjectives were thrown at the BMW i3 and they all work. It’s a weird looking car from a lot of angles, with a stepped window line, whacky, half-size rear suicide doors, snub nose and tall 19-inch alloys. It’s not self-conscious like Toyota’s Prius, sleek like the Tesla or arresting like BMW’s own i8.

It was no surprise the i3 garnered an enormous amount of attention at standstill and on the move.

Taking punters around the car elicited plenty of whistling and headshaking, the good kind. Most remarked on the small boot but all accepted there was plenty of room for a normal shopping trip and putting the seats down put

this beyond doubt.

The interior is a tactile wonderland - woollen seat covering, BMW’s shredded-tyres-and-bits-of-stuff door cards (Premium Next, they call it), the wave of sustainable eucalyptus wood on the dash and two big screens all give the car an other-worldly air, far more so than the curiously restrained interior of the i8.

Its clever shape is all about a big box inside, belying its apparently compact exterior dimensions, with tons of headroom for all passengers, even if rear leg and footroom aren’t too flash.

There’s a lot going that’s brand new both inside and out of the BMW that

left most people close to speechless.

Pretty impressive from a mainstream maker not often keen on taking big risks.

The i3 carries six airbags, ABS, traction and stability controls for a five star ANCAP rating.

Additionally, and outside of the ANCAP scope, the i3 has a pedestrian warning sound (no, not the horn) - you really can creep up on someone.

The 10.25-inch screen dominates the centre of the dash and is run by BMW’s iDrive system from a consolemounted rotary controller. As ever, it’s extremely usable and that big screen can be seen by everyone in the cabin.

The four-speaker stereo is perfectly

adequate but the lack of AM radio in tunnel-infested Sydney isn’t - the DAB is fine when it works but only the Harbour Tunnel looks after you when it comes to digital reception.

The i3’s rear wheels are driven by a 125kW/250Nm electric motor with a claimed 130km range from a full charge. If you want to travel 130km, you’ll do it without air-con, heating or anything much in the way of comforts.

You can do it though, unlike the oftenlaughable fuel figures most cars wear on their windscreens.

A distance of 130 km is plenty for most daily commutes but doesn’t allow for any errors in judgement or forgetting to plug it in.

It will take all night to charge on a standard domestic power supply but you can buy a wallbox to shrink that down to a few hours. A full charge will only cost a few bucks.

Let’s get down to it - this is probably the best city car ever made. It’s perfect for squirting around town and never leaving. Quiet, quick and composed you can zap (sorry) around the city at an almost indecent clip, the accelerator instantly answering the call of your ankle’s flex.

BMW i3 feels light and chuckable, the only black mark being the brutal traction control cutting in to stop spin and power wastage. It recovers quickly, but it feels a bit basic.
