Cold case family reward plea By PAUL MILLAR THE DAUGHTER of a Geelong West woman murdered in her Hope Street home in 1992 is hopeful that a $1million reward will be enough incentive to bring her killer to justice. Jacinta Martin sobbed, remembering happier times, saying not a day passed without her thinking about her mother Annette Maree Steward. Ms Steward, 29, was found dead in her bedroom by a former flatmate, with an electrical cord around her neck. She had also suffered head injuries. A postmortem revealed she died as a result of strangulation. The State Government, through Victoria Police, recently announced the $1 million reward for “information leading to the apprehension and subsequent conviction of the person or persons responsible for the death of Annette Maree Steward”. Ms Martin and her brother, Aaron, who now have families of their own in Queensland, said they would never have real closure but welcomed any move that brought the killer to the courts. “It’s been more than 20 years and as a family we have had to

She has missed out on seeing her grandchildren, weddings, we should be sharing all that.’’ Coroner Iain West said in his findings in 2007 that Craig Cameron Rogers was the sole suspect in the murder, despite his constant denials of involvement. Days before she was murdered Ms Steward told colleagues at the Point Henry ammunitions factory where she worked that she was angry with Mr Rogers, a co-worker. She is believed to have known Mr Rogers for about two years. The coroner said in his finding that detectives had interviewed Mr Rogers several times about the murder. “They established that he was far more involved with the deceased than he had previously led police to believe,“ he said. A spokesman for Victoria Police said it was hopeful that the reward would generate more interest in the case and encourage anybody with any information to come forward.

$2m in tax agent case A TAX agent who allegedly fleeced trusting clients is expected to face up to 1200 charges relating to the theft of almost $2 million. Kaylene Maree Hussen was originally charged with nine offences connected to the fraudulent use of clients’ money, with police claiming she had a massive gambling problem. Investigators have had to move out of the Geelong police station to the Waurn Ponds complex to collate a brief of evidence, which is likely to
reach 9000 pages. It was initially argued that up to $700,000 had been stolen from clients of the 55-year-old mother of four adult children. Police will allege that the figure has now blown out to almost $2 million with around 200 victims, many of them elderly. She has already been charged with obtaining property by deception, obtaining financial advantage by deception, theft and making use of false documents.
Earlier this year Detective Senior Constable Paul Mitchell told the Geelong Magistrates Court “that records obtained from Crown Casino showed that since 2002 Hussen and her husband had lost more than $1 million at the gambling centre.� “In 2014, she spent 104 days at Crown Casino and was there for up to five hours at a time and she had accumulated three million points on her Crown card,� he said. “She has admitted to us that she has an extreme gambling problem ... it appeared to be of some relief that

it’s finally over,� the detective added. Evidence, he alleged, would show that money transferred from the accounts of her clients to her own trust account coincided with her visits to the casino, the court heard in January. Ms Hussen is currently on bail, on condition that she not engage in taxation matters, not leave Victoria and that she abide at her son’s home in Torquay. She is due to face the Geelong Magistrates Court on 16 October for a committal mention hearing.
Spare meals give battlers a break By PAUL MILLAR SPARE Meals Geelong, a non-judgemental team of 20 volunteers, has been helping battlers with up to 150 free meals a week. Carin Shiell, a co-ordinator with the group, said the organisation was “helping a lot of families that are in a tight spot�. “We aim to fill the gap that exists between everyday battlers and other food relief providers taking some of the pressure off other groups. We offer temporary assistance, rather than longterm help,� Ms Shiell said. The Facebook-based group does not require Healthcare card identification and is not burdened by the bureaucracy that frustrates many battlers when they need a hand. Up to 20 volunteers make it happen, cooking, storing and delivering meals. Spare Meals Geelong started about 18 months ago and has tapped into the

The son, found slumped in the same room as his father, had been dead for up to five days. Police confirmed yesterday that the 88-year-old incapacitated Hamlyn Heights man had died after he was taken to hospital following the discovery of the body of his son. He had been found sitting in an armchair in his Mossgiel Crt home on Wednesday afternoon with the gas fire blazing and his dead son on the floor.

OHIO remains keen to make Geelong a sister city, if the Toledo Blade thunderer is anything to go by. Blade columnist, former editor and vice president Tom Walton has raised the issue twice in as many weeks following the lead of Geelong expat Lindsay Smith. “Toledo already has 12 sister cities. Geelong has just three, none of them especially active. They need us,� he penned. Lindsay has put the case to Australia’s ambassador in the US, an old friend from his foreign service career days. “So is establishing a sister-city relationship in Australia an idea whose time has come?� says Tom. “Does it have a fair go? Or are we all figuratively out in the woopwoop for discussing it? We can yabber about it or we could give it a birl.� Hmmm, looks like the vernacular language barrier might be one of the first things to tackle.

Hayley is one to watch in GC magazine GROVEDALE hairdressing whirlwind Hayley Parker has added another strand to her impressive achievements. Featured in the latest edition of Geelong Coast magazine, Hayley has won a place as a finalist in the Victorian Apprentice of the Year awards. The accolade adds to her recent to-do list of preparing for a world skills competition in Brazil next month, flying to China on a skills exchange program, training with the Australian Skills Squad and competing in the inaugural WorldSkills Oceania competition in New Zealand. She even found time to join a Gordon TAFE study tour to Singapore and Kuala Lumpur for 10 days and took out the award as the Gordon’s top apprentice. “I’ve been so lucky. NEW BUS routes have left Highton residents high and dry - unable to readily get to doctors, banks or shops, MP Andrew Katos has told State Parliament. Changes introduced in recent weeks have brought a raft of complaints by angry commuters across the region from Belmont and Highton through Newtown to Lara. Mr Katos said he had received numerous complaints about new routes and timetables and called for some to be reinstated. He said Highton's Helen Badham formerly used the number 16 bus servicing Deakin University, via the Highton shopping centre, High Street, Belmont and Kmart into Geelong central. “This gave many senior local residents the independence to use the local banks, doctors, dentist, post office, newsagent, public library, pathology services, not to mention supermarkets as well as catching up with friends for a coffee," Ms Badham said. “So you can imagine some of our senior's distress to learn that the new number 43 bus route does not give them access to any business hub at all south of the Barwon River. “Our bus route provides no service to the Belmont High St shops or Kmart or the Waurn Ponds shopping centre or the Highton shopping centre.” Mr Katos raised concerns voiced by Jane Stevens, also from Highton: “As a parent of two children who catch the 34 bus, one to Belmont High School, I found it hard to believe that this service has been scrapped. “We live in Grantham Drive, Highton and one of my children will have to walk
with a heavy backpack and musical instrument to school. I cannot understand how a decision like this was made, there is a huge amount of Belmont High students catch this bus every day.” South Geelong’s John Thompson described changes to bus schedules and routes close to the CBD as “bloody ludicrous”. “I used to go to town on number 61 or 62, there’d always be another 20 minutes later but now the wait is 40 minutes. “I know little old ladies who are struggling home with their shopping after five stops were wiped out." At South Geelong station reduced connections meant many commuters had to walk to Moorabool Street to catch a bus, he said. “Many women coming home late at night are on the road after dark, it’s not as safe or sensible,” Mr Thompson said. Shopkeepers in the CBD told the Independent they’d noted a reduction in people at their stores as a result of bus route changes and fielded numerous complaints about schedule and route changes. Parents complained of students at Lara travelling circuitous new routes to school that took longer than previously. Mr Katos called for bus services cut in Highton to be reinstated. “The changes to these services have focused on linking buses to railway stations and Deakin University,” he told parliament. “That is good, but it has come at the expense of local bus services so people who want to shop or move about their own suburb can no longer do so. “I ask the minister to immediately reinstate former bus services 16 and 34 in Highton.”

By NOEL MURPHY BRITAIN’S Lady Diana enjoyed a vexed relationship with the media but former paparazzi king and Geelong mayor Darryn Lyons remembers a woman who was massively influential with an extraordinary sense of community service. As part of London’s media throng, Lyons was a regular at Kensington Palace or the gym Diana frequented. He waited outside hospital as she gave birth to her children and likewise at schools as she picked up the boys. “I got a world exclusive when I sat at the back door at Wetherby School while 150 others were at the front, on Prince William’s first day at school as he was coming out the back,” he told the Independent. “I got the spanking pictures on the sports day when Williams had a fight with one of his little colleagues, when he was getting bullied. Diana spanked his bottom, he was in tears. There was a famous sequence of five frames, the last shots on a 36 roll. “I always left five frames because you never knew what could happen next. This was one of the biggest pictures in the world.” Cr Lyons says he was a familiar face to Lady Di, so much so she once intimated to him – though not in so many words – he should investigate her husband Prince Charles’ extra-marital activities.
“Through sources she’d tip me off, and one day she ... tried to tell me, in a riddle, of the affair between Camilla Parker-Bowles and Charles. She said ‘You should be keeping an eye on my husband’. “I said, ‘M’am, I don’t think he sells very well. She said ‘I assure you, you’re looking in the wrong place’. Twelve months later, the Camillagate story came out.” When Lady Di died in a Paris tunnel car crash in 1997, Cr Lyons collected negatives from paparazzi who captured her last moments alive. He still has them and says he will never release them to the public. “I’ve always said they’re not for public consumption and after I pass this world they will be left to my family in whatever shape or form,” he said. “It’s a great campaign to wear your seatbelt otherwise she’d be alive today. “I’ve been offered multimillions around world but I’ve always said no, even though you could do with the money, but with some things in life there’s a consciousness. I made a decision and I’ve stuck to it ever since.” Cr Lyons’ London office was raided and he was crossexamined by the inquest into her death. An exhibition of some 70-plus photographs held by Cr Lyons is presently being staged at the Elephant and Castle hotel in East Geelong with proceeds going to Beyondblue.

John, Jennifer and Jessica just happen to be the most frequent Geelong names to visit the blood bank-followed closely by David, Peter and Sarah. Right now, the Geelong Blood Donor Centre is searching for 1000 new donors to step in and give blood for those unable to do so due to cold and flu symptoms this winter. While everyone around them is struck-down with illness, these flu-fighters tend to stay healthy
and out of harm’s way during even the toughest of cold and flu seasons. Blood service spokesperson Stephanie Reynolds said the Geelong donor centre was short around 1000 donors over the next month and searching for new ones to take their place. “Move over Arnie and Angelina – our heroes are named John and Jennifer, which are the most common donor names at Geelong,” she said. “We’re searching for more Germ-inators to join our heroes as they fight against the flu this winter.” “If you’re feeling well and healthy, you may be eligible to give blood. One in three of us
will need it in our lifetime, and the need for blood never takes a break - even if our regular donors need to.“ The call for donors comes amid continued concerns that this cold and flu season could be the worst. Ms Reynolds said 900 donors across the country were calling each week to cancel their blood donation appointment due to cold or flu. “Patients fighting cancer, infections and blood diseases are relying on donated blood to keep them healthy throughout winter. Cloudy but rain is down in June
MOST of the Geelong-BellarineOtways region had below average rainfall in June. Urban Geelong only received around 75 per cent of the latest 30-year average and parts of the Otways were not much better than 50 per cent. The urban area average was 38 mm, down from the normal monthly average of 46.1mm. The Moorabool system generally recorded less than half the June normal. Despite the poor result water supplies are still at 57 per cent capacity and the situation will not

become critical unless there are only low falls for another couple of months. The position will be clearer by September. Temperatures for Geelong were within 0.1 degree of the latest 30-year average for June. Maximums averaged 14.3 C
(mean 14.5) and minimums 6.7 C (mean 6.3). The warmest day reached 17.9 C on 8 June and the warmest minimum was 12.4 C on the same day. Most days were partly sunny with the typical cloudy winter conditions but with less rain than expected. Only one strong wind gust was recorded – 61 kph at Breakwater on 8 June – and there were no storms or other unusual phenomena, although some good Aurora Australis photos were taken from the district in the early morning of 27 June.

Not drowning, but exhibiting By NOEL MURPHY “SOMEONE was definitely trying to grab that night,” says Red Whyte of the surf dumping that inspired his latest artistic efforts. Crunched good and properly at what he’s dubbed The A Kingdom, aka Point Addis, Whyte was slammed underwater, clouted his head on a rock and turned his ankle slipping and sliding trying to clamber out of the surf. “I crawled on to the beach and a couple of fishermen helped drag me up the beach just on dark,” he says. “It was a bad girl’s evening for me.”
The inimitable artist-musician-photographer-surfer’s never been one to be dragged down by adverse events. But the brush with mortality left him thinking. The result was multifarious – a movie, a photo exhibition and music – all in Whyte’s edgy, singular psychedelic blues-rock style. It’s an event which the Surf World theatrette is staging tonight. As Whyte says: “It’s a twopart movie based on a short story of a near drowning experience I had a couple of years ago. “I wanted to share the experience in a creative way. There’s nothing new in the band-movie
format but this is a bit different – starting out quietly before turning pretty psychedelic in the end. “The whole thing revolves around the short story in the CD booklet about a surfer’s close call and brush with death. “The movie depicts the imagery of the traumatic event and the band Surfusion plays the live eerie soundtrack to the footage. “Up the back wall of the Surf World theatrette are 44 enlarged photographs of the coastline west of Bells. Also adorning the stage will be some incredible pieces of carved woodwork by Tony Gilson, creating the mysterious vibe on the night.“

Good sports to join cancer fight THE LEGEND of EJ Whitten lives on through the foundation that carries his name and its annual Geelong sportsman’s dinner. The larger-than-life Billy Brownless and Coodabeen Champion Ian Cover will host this year’s Rivalry Round Sportsman’s Dinner. Ted Whitten Jnr said the dinner was a vital part of the foundation’s fundraising activities. “Since its inception in 1995
the EJ Whitten Foundation has raised more than $8.5 million for prostate cancer research and awareness,” he said. “More importantly, it has made many thousands of Australian men more aware of prostate cancer and potentially helped save many lives.” The dinner, also presented by AFL Barwon, features gourmet food, fine wines and ales, and a wide range of fun and entertainment.

Letters Nothing to fear IN ANSWER to Messrs Lowry, McDonald and Mackinlay (26 June) I ask you: What are you so afraid of? We are all humans and as such – according to the Bible – created equal. However it would appear that some are more equal than others. The Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transexual, intersex community has been described in their letters as these people, an issue, a topic, an agenda and an ideology. Gay people are human beings, they belong to my family, to your family, they are your friends, colleagues and the people living next door. Although you may not know it because let’s face it why would they tell you if they are met with such vitriol. Pastor Lowry thinks that LGBTI people are putting out propaganda and educating young people to encourage them to “experiment”. An interesting thing is that Jesus Christ said that the days immediately before His return to earth to judge mankind would be characterised as “the days of Lot”. For those who may not know, Lot lived in ancient Sodom which was destroyed by a huge conflagration because of its conduct, mainly sexual activity between males. Hence the terms “sodomy” and “sodomite”. Those days are now here and one would be foolish to ignore the prophecy. That’s why those big streets leading to the bay have no trees in the middle – only on the edges – to keep the views. The east-west streets have trees in the middle – no views to the bay. bay in Yarra St, with a food court, there was a process to object, which we did. We lost but there was a process. Where was the process here? Clearly, running behind the Mayor like little puppies, the council minions behind this mistake obviously have no design knowledge or taste. This has been done in complete haste without any consideration to urban impact and without any engagement with the community. Does the Mayor think this is democracy? Chemistry 101 IN HIS letter (5 June) Don Bartlett says carbon dioxide must be going into the oceans because only a fraction of it remains in the air. He then asks those who do not agree with him where they think this CO2 is going. Has he not heard of photosynthesis? It is a process whereby green plants use sunlight to synthesize nutrients from carbon dioxide and water. Plants use the green pigment chlorophyll in this process and generate oxygen as a bi-product. Trees take in the CO2 from the atmosphere and release the oxygen thus refreshing the air. Trees store CO2 and therefore old trees should be buried and not burnt as burning releases the carbon dioxide into the air again.

History’s cycle POPE Francis has made it clear he sides with radical environmentalists in his Encyclical ‘Laudato Si’. This poses a problem for many conservative Catholics who are strongly committed to their religion and feel obliged to defend this Encyclical despite their misgivings about the accuracy of the science in the Encyclical. In truth the Encyclical was poorly crafted and ill-advised. The Pope appears to lack discernment regarding the science as there is much debate about the causes of climate change. The Pope had the opportunity to show himself as a modern prophet with insight and genuine understanding, but alas, he fell far short. He has backed himself into a corner and could have taken a much more nuanced stance and at least tried to understand opposing views held by Cardinal Pell and good Catholic Lord Monckton. Once again the Pope, in terms of making judgements about science, has not got it right (remember Galileo?) In due time, this Encyclical will be seen to be on the wrong side of history. Gas enquiry FRACK Free Grovedale held a stall at the Belmont Markets last Sunday to alert the community that the State Government is holding a public inquiry into the unconventional gas industry – otherwise known as fracking. This is because if areas in the PEP163 exploration area extending from the southern suburbs of Geelong to Torquay, Anglesea, Moriac, Ceres and Highton are allowed to be mined, the entire nature of the region will be transformed into gas wells, gas pipes, and mining equipment infrastructure to the detriment of our agriculture and tourism industries. The inquiry is seeking submissions from anyone who either opposes or supports this industry coming to Victoria. The stall offered to assist those people who were opposed to this industry. CFA warns on electric blankets THE CFA has warned locals to be alert to the dangers of electric blankets following increased usage in the recent cold spell. The warning follows a fire in the St Albans area that scorched the leg of a 10-year-old boy at his Wilsons Road home late on Monday night.

The CFA’s Mark Collins said a working smoke alarm alerted parents to the fire. “This fire is a timely reminder for people to check their electric blankets now we’re in the colder months of the year and to never have them on while in bed,� Mr Collins said.
The fire was contained to a mattress and was controlled within 10 minutes. The electric blanket is believed to be the cause of the fire. The CFA advises to check electric blankets at the start of winter for any damage and to turn them off when going to bed.

Head to scarf festival A RECORD number of handcrafted scarves are on display and most are available for purchase at Geelong’s Scarf Festival 2015. Invited guests mingled with artists amid a spectacle of lights, live music and scarves of every colour at the opening recently. The crowd of more than 300 gathered in the museum for the annual fashion show and award winners announcement, one of the National Wool Museum’s signature events and an important textile industry event. The event included a catwalk show down the ramps of the museum. The 2015 theme Coastlines attracted a record breaking 449 scarves and 305 artists from across Australia and three continents. The 2015 judges include Esther Anatolitis, Director of Regional Arts Victoria, and Janice Breen Burns, editor of VoxFrock. They selected the winners and highly commended in each of the 11 Scarf Festival categories – including the coveted Scarf of the Year Award for 2015. “This exhibition has again proven that there are no limitations to creativity and skill when placed in the hands of a talented maker,” explained the judges. “The strength of craft in Australia lies with our practitioners who insist on keeping the art of handmade alive and well. “Scarf Festival is one of the National Wool Museum’s signature programs,” explains councillor Andy Richards, City of

Aine is back with song By NOEL MURPHY IRISH gypsy songbird Aine Tyrrell is returning Geelong’s way with a new single under her wing as she tours the country by Bedford bus. The bus, a mobile studio and home since Tyrrell departed Ocean Grove last year, is proving an effective pad for inspiration. The bus and the Outback, that is. Her single Where Were You is the debutante release from her new album Queen of Swords, an album recorded in abandoned mines and under the stars. As she says, the Aussie desert is an odd place to find herself considering she’s an ardent surfer who grew up performing on the wild coasts of Ireland. But maybe not so unusual for Tyrrell has the chronic wanderlust, and love of music, of the gypsy. She busked her way around South America, and played legendary folk clubs like SinÉ and Arlene’s Grocery in New York, Whelans of Dublin and Roisin Dubh of Galway, before settling into Ocean Grove – for a bit. She’s also worked with or shared stages with Damien Dempsey, Declan O’Rourke, Paddy Casey, Mundy, Roesy, Luka Bloom, Katell Keinig and more recently here in Oz with Clare Bowditch. Tyrrell’s due to play Geelong’s Beav’s Bar on Sunday 12 July – a brief return as her Where Were You tour takes her far and wide from Sydney and the NSW Central Coast down through Canberra and regional Vic. The new single is, as Tyrrell says, a “plaintive, hopeful, and ultimately uplifting” statement “inspired by a string of tragedies” visited on her and her loved ones. But as its accompanying video clip suggests, sometimes you just need “space, lots and lots of glorious space” to begin to heal. Mum to three, Tyrrell took to the road to record the album, which had been waiting 10 years in the wings, through crowdfunding. Now she’s paying back that faith.

Music soothes folksters trials THE WORD ‘can’t’ is non-existent in the vocabulary of singer and stroke survivor Marion Melrose. The Queenscliff woman was unable to walk or talk after having a stroke in 2012. After intense therapy, Melrose has regained full mobility and has resumed her singing career with cover band Peter, Paul and Marion. The group performs songs of the iconic ‘60s group Peter, Paul and Mary and will perform at Queenscliff Uniting Church’s Winter Warmer concert series. Their music includes hits such as The Times They Are a Changin’,‘Blowin’ in the Wind and Puff the Magic Dragon. Melrose believes that the most important thing after suffering a stroke is a ‘can-do’ attitude. “It’s a lot of hard work. You can never give up. “You attempt something and you can’t do it, so you just keep doing it until you can,” she says. The group, including musicians Stewart Firth, Jon Mamonski and Ian Rogulskyg, have gained a loyal following in the local community, where they play at Geelong venues and at the Potato Shed’s Morning Melodies. Melrose now also runs Stroke a Note, a choir in Geelong for stroke survivors. The group will perform the Peter, Paul and Marion concert on 11 July at 7:30pm at Queenscliff Uniting Church.

FinallyFriday Basilica hosts youth chorale AFTER brilliant seasons in Brisbane and Perth, this year The National Youth Choir of Australia comes to Geelong. NYCA brings together the best young singers aged from 1826 from all around the country and focuses on presenting a broad repertoire with a strong commitment to Australian choral music. The NYCA’s 2015 season features two pinnacles of choral music, Benjamin Britten’s, A Boy Was Born and J S Bach’s mighty motet, Singet dem Herr. The first season of the National Youth Choir was held in 1995 and since then the choir has met once every year and has included
seasons in Melbourne, Sydney, Hobart, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth and Darwin. Tours have also taken in regional Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, the Northern Territory, Western Australia and New Zealand. NYCA has performed under some of Australia’s finest choral conductors and this year will perform under new artistic director Noel Ancell OAM. The choir has been in residence at Melbourne University’s Trinity College and in addition to its performance in Geelong, the season will conclude with a twilight concert with special
guests the Australian Boys Choir. In store for the 2016 season is being led by an international conductor making a welcome return to Australia, which will be announced on the final day of this year’s season. Exciting things lie ahead in 2017, when the NYCA will converge on Canberra – the first ever NYCA season held in the nation’s capital. The NYCA will perform it’s Bach to Britten show with special guests The Australian Boys Choir at St Mary of the Angels Basilica on 9 July at 7.30pm. Visit nyca. org.au for more information.

reach and versatility of their craft, a mix of both stage and screen is vital. “Now it’s time to really stretch myself with the female lead of Exit The King.” Director Stacey Carmichael said having an actor of Georgia’s standing choose this as her stage debut added weight to an already talented ensemble of cast and crew. Exit The King is set in a fictitious kingdom, taking the audience on a journey of witnessing the King’s demise as plotted by his first wife, Queen Marguerite, played by Chara. As the King succumbs to illness and ultimately death, so does
his kingdom, and the audience is left viewing a mass of rubble on stage where an elaborate kingdom once stood. Carmichael said this version of the play was unlike any other, boasting a range of design elements never before seen on a Geelong stage. The 4-D effects and the crucial role of the stage in creating a seventh character all worked to enhance and expand the absurdist elements of the script, she said. Exit The King premiers at GPAC at 7.30pm tonight with performances through to 18 July. Visit gpac.org.au for further times.

LOCAL star and recent Logie nominee Georgia Chara will make her stage debut in her hometown. The Bellbrae local is best known for her portrayal of the wrongfully accused prisoner Jess Warner on Foxtel’s Wentworth, screened in more than 80 countries around the world. But Chara is taking advantage of the time during the break between seasons of Wentworth to further round out her acting experience and abilities. She will embark on a new adventure in her first ever stage performance, playing the female lead in Exit The King, a production made famous by the Sydney Theatre Company and Geoffrey Rush. Although having had the ‘dream run’ with roles in Home and Away, Rush, Neighbours, mini-series Killing Time and Wentworth, Chara said she understood the importance of being a wellrounded and versatile actor. “It’s easy when an actor has screen success at a young age to think that’s all they need for their career. It’s a common trap that we see a lot of young actors fall into,” Chara said. “But good actors know that to be fully rounded and to extend the

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN players went GEELONG through a tough contested football training session this week as the side prepared to face Adelaide away after the bye. Coach Chris Scott earlier identified Geelong’s contested ball performance as the benchmark for a strong performance against the Crows. “We need to go close to matching them around the footy,” Scott emphasised. “If we are okay around the ball we tend to play pretty well. In our poor performances we’ve been smashed. “It’s going to be a challenge this week because Adelaide rank high in most of those areas, they’re a terrific centre bounce team, good stoppage team, good contested ball team. “If you get killed round the ball and you’re defending from your back third the whole game you tend to be in trouble. “We’ve got to think of ways to perform better in that area. And we need to put some of that theory out on the track.” Jimmy Bartel took part in full training, raising hopes he could be close to a recall from his round three knee injury. “He’s similar to the Andrew Mackie situation a few weeks ago, in that we felt he missed a fair bit of footy and we felt he needed to get either some footy in or more training,” Scott said. “He (Mackie) got the extra week and a half on the track and he came back and played well. “Jimmy’s been in full training for a couple of weeks so it’s more likely that we would bring him straight back in off that preparation. “If he only had a week or so on the track, some match practice at a lower level would have been the way to go. “He is better placed to play AFL footy straight away than if we had a game last week.” Scott also signalled the recall of ruckman Dawson Simpson, saying he preferred to have a big, fit and in-form ruckman playing in every game. Scott admitted having two weeks to stew on the loss to Melbourne in Corey Enright’s 300-game milestone was “more uncomfortable than I would have liked”. “We’re itching to get back out there again,” he declared.

North Geelong fighting hard in relegation battle By JOSIP ZILIC THE BATTLE to avoid relegation is getting more intense every week for the North Geelong Warriors and this week is no different. On Friday night the Warriors are away to resilient Pascoe Vale which is undefeated in four weeks. Pascoe Vale overcame Oakleigh last week with a 2-1 win despite going down on the 30 minute mark. Pascoe Vale dug in and responded well with a quick return five minutes later then sealing the match shortly after half time. The Warriors on the other hand were left with no points after working tirelessly to deserve at least a point in their clash with Hume City. In the first 10 minutes North Geelong had flankers Yusuf Yusuf and Michael Anderson spurn giltedged chances with only the keeper to beat. They were made to pay as Hume – its only real chance of the match – with a well-weighted long ball stretching the Warriors defence found Theo Marke-

WINTER snapper have been the focus of a lot of anglers recently and with good reason too. Cal Gillet made his way down to the rocks off St Helens last Sunday wanting to give his new rod and reel a run. After baiting up with half a pilchard Cal sat back with the expectation of a pinkie or two. When Cal’s rod buckled over with some force he knew something larger than a pinkie was attached. After a fine net job, Cal had a 6.4kg 87cm snapper on the rocks. Anglers fishing from boats have found using a sounder essential in locating schools of fish. The area straight out from the wheat silos has been a likely place to start a search. Holding in close around structures on the Geelong waterfront, pinkie snapper to 45cm have been encountered in reasonable numbers along with couta to 50cm and the odd snott trevally. Soft plastics will target these species holding in tight around structures. Over at Portarlington last weekend Max Condor was fishing with his grandfather Gary Honeymoon. After catching some fresh squid for bait the pair anchored up in 12.5 meters of water out from Indented Head. The guys were successful in boating a nice specimen of a gummy shark measuring in at 1.3 metres after putting up a great fight on light line. Anglers have discovered good numbers of whiting over the Queenscliff grass beds and further around to the bight. The attraction of Queenscliff whiting is their size, although at times it can be hard to get bag limit captures anglers are generally pleased to boat fish averaging 40cm. Just around the corner at Swan Bay, squid were taken by those drifting slowly and casting artificial jigs such as the Shimano Sephia. This area is one to keep an eye on as we move further into squid season with squid generally getting larger in size. Offshore from Ocean Grove and KEEN: Cal Gillet with a bay Barwon Heads snapper. snapper are still holding in 40 metres of water straight out from the Bluff. Some of these snapper have reached 6kg with anglers also finding good numbers of flathead and gummy shark amongst the catch. Inside the Barwon Estuary some impressive sized Australian salmon have made an appearance. The mouth of the river at the top of the high tide has seen anglers casting from the bank able to beach salmon to 2kg. Further up the estuary around the sheepwash section, mulloway continue to be taken with anglers reporting better success when fishing the deeper parts of the river. Further down the Surf Coast, those spinning for salmon off the rock platforms around Lorne have been able to land fish to 2kg. The key has been to find a break if possible in the large swell. As has been the case for a few weeks, Bancoora and Jan Juc are hot spots for those looking to spin from the beach. Lake Wendouree in Ballarat last week Diego Gadea banked a nice conditioned brown trout of 1.5kg casting from the lake margins. Lake Wendouree is a fantastic option for those looking to get stuck into some land-based trout action. Closer to home St Augustine’s water hole has been stocked with rainbow trout for the school holidays. These feisty trout love to eat powerbait rigged on lightly weighted running sinker rig cast from the newly built jetty. Next week if the weather allows those able to head out just off the Barwon Heads bluff in 40 metres should try for snapper and gummy shark. Inside the bay calm conditions will assist anglers in having a real shot of finding a monster winter snapper or two. For those after a trout then Wendouree is worth the drive with brown trout devouring lures cast form the lake edges.
