“We were under threat for four weeks – we’d be going home not knowing if we had a house to go home to each time,” Ms Picone said.

She said that, though the SES was held in high regard in the community, many people forget that all members, regardless of rank, were volunteers.

Though she runs her own transport company, Ms Picone said she was still able to find the time to contribute to the emergency service.

“The fact that I work for myself makes it easier for me than most people, because I can just take work with me,” she said.

“I’ve got brilliant customers who understand my life and work around my commitments with SES, and I’ve got an amazing family that just puts up with it all.

“It’s just a matter of time management.”

At the moment, Ms Picone said she had taken a brief break from her SES work, but that she had been supported by her crew.

“I have a pretty busy life, and I needed a break, so I’ve taken that,” she said.

“Between Gary Ule, the Regional Officer, and Geoff Stott, they’ve enabled me to have the break so that’s been great.

“We’re a team, we’re a family – we look after each other.”

The Emergency Services Medal will complement Ms Picone’s National Emergency Medal, which she received for her work in the 2009 bushfires.

A DEDICATION to helping others for nearly 15 years has earned national recognition for Healesville SES’s Karen Picone, who was awarded an Emergency Service Medal yesterday.

Ms Picone was awarded the medal as part of the Queen’s Birthday Honours, which acknowledges extraordinary Australians, on Monday 8 June.

After moving to Healesville in 1999, Ms Picone started working with the State Emergency Service in November 2001, originally signing up to do fund-raising work.

She then rose through the ranks to become Deputy Controller, before taking the top spot as Controller about nine years ago.

Her award recognised her work with the SES, her “strength of character” and problem-solving solutions, particularly during the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires.

Ms Picone said the particular way emergency services teams pulled together to help their communities during the fires were the most memorable times in her career.

After setting up a staging area in Warragul on Saturday 7 February 2009, Ms Picone’s pager started going off with alerts from the Yarra Valley as the fires drew closer.

“We got three rescues within about five minutes, which is unheard of,” she said.

“There was no phone contact, so every time I finally got phone service, all I did was listen to phone messages, and then it got lost again.

“The guys had done an amazing job without me here for that first 24 hours.”

Returning to the town the next day, the team set to work at the staging area at the Don Road Sporting Complex in Healesville, and was the first SES crew to get into Kinglake and Marysville after the fires destroyed the towns.

Ms Picone said the SES ran body recovery until the army was brought in, and that she and her deputy controller visited the relief centres daily to meet survivors and try to help them through their grief.

Crash claims a life

By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS and JESSE GRAHAM AN ELDERLY Healesville man died in the aftermath of a serious car accident last Thursday, on a dangerous corner coming into Healesville.

At about 4.30pm on Thursday, 4 June, the 76-year-old Healesville man was driving a sedan along Healesville-Kooweerup Road towards Healesville.

Healesville police Leading Senior Constable Cliff Argus said the driver was waiting for a line of traffic to pass on the other side of the road so he could turn right onto Toolebewong Road.

“There was a line of traffic - five or six cars travelling from Healesville to Woori Yallock,” Leading Sen Const Argus said.

“He let the first four or five cars go through and then turned in front of the last car.”

The car, a four-wheel-drive driv-

en by a 27-year-old Yarra Junction man, hit the sedan on the corner.

The Healesville man was airlifted to The Alfred hospital with life-threatening injuries, and was pronounced dead at the hospital at 9pm on Friday 5 June.

Leading Sen Const Argus said the man died from a “non-survivable brain injury”.

At the time of the crash, Leading Sen Const Argus said the exact circumstances of the crash were unclear, and that police were speaking to witnesses.

“Witnesses said the 4WD was travelling last in a line of traffic and the driver of the sedan had let five of the six vehicles in line go through before turning into the intersection,” he said.

“Witnesses saw that the driver of the 4WD had his headlights on so there was no real reason for the elderly male not to have seen the vehicle.”

Briefly Court date A 59-YEAR-OLD Healesville man will front court in October charged with 45 counts of theft and deception related to a Yarra Valley business.

Senior Detective Paul Edyvane from Lilydale Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) said the charges relate to incidents that happened between February last year and March this year.

The man has been summonsed to appear at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on 12 October.

A POLICE operation involving an Airwing helicopter tracked down a car stolen from Lilydale - and the thief that took it - at a Badger Creek property last week.

Healesville police Leading Senior Constable Cliff Argus told the Mail that a car was stolen from Plumbtech in Lilydale on Wednesday 3 June.

The car, however, was fitted with a GPS tracking device, and police were able to track the location of the car with a staff member at the business who relayed information from the tracking system.

“We followed the location given by a staff member, and eventually the vehicle was said to be in the Badger Creek area,” Leading Sen Const Argus said.

The Police Airwing found the car in Wallaby Way in Badger Creek, as well as a suspect walking along Koala Avenue - he was then arrested in the rear of a private address in Bluegum Drive at 4.20pm.

The 22-year-old Hallam man was charged with theft of a car and remanded in custody to appear at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court.

Attempted theft POLICE are calling for information, after unknown people attempted to steal a car from St Leonards Road in Healesville earlier this month.

Police believe that, between 3pm on 30 May and 9am on 2 June, unknown offenders broke into the car on St Leonards Road and attempted to steal the car.

The car, a red Mitsubishi Magna, was opened, but the thieves left empty-handed when they failed to start the car.

Healesville police Sergeant Stewart Thomson said the ignition barrel of the car was damaged from trying to start the car, and no signs of forced entry to the car were found.

Right time for tribute

By JESSE GRAHAM WHEN it came to organising a memorial to pay tribute to those killed in the Black Saturday bushfires, Murrindindi Shire Council CEO Margaret Abbey said it was about getting it right, no matter how long it took.

“We’ve been driven not by timelines, but rather from feedback from the community,” Ms Abbey said.

“For some, the process has been too slow - for others, it’s been too quick.

“We’ve tried to accommodate the different points of view and the different opportunities for when people feel comfortable to participate in the consultation.”

Six years on from the fires, the discussions about the memorials have progressed to a point where council has decided on three potential sites for the Marysville memorial.

The sites, all within Gallipoli Park, include one next to the river, near the water-wheel; another near the entrance to the Tree Fern Gully trail; or a site next to the swimming pool.

Residents are being encouraged

by the council to visit their online discussion site about the memorials and vote for their favourite Marysville spot.

Feedback can be given on the memorial sites until Monday, 15 June, before an Expressions of Interest process opens in July for the design of the memorial.

Ms Abbey said that, by November or December this year, the council will have potential designs mapped out that will go back to the community for consultation, before construction next year.

The Marysville memorial will be one of the two major Black Saturday memorial sites - the other will be located in Kinglake, representing the two fires - with four smaller memorials to be placed in Narbethong, Castella/Toolangi, Kinglake West and Flowerdale.

Ms Abbey said one of the paramount concerns for the council was ensuring the process was sensitive to those who were affected by the fires and gave everyone a chance to have a say.

“The important thing, for us, was that, because of the significant impact of the bushfires on people, we know that people have been at different stages in their opportuni-

TWO LILYDALE teenagers will face court later in the year after being charged in relation to Lilydale thefts late last month.

Police interviewed and charged two Lilydale men, a 19-year-old and an 18-year-old, in relation to a theft from a motor car in Lilydale overnight on 23 May. The men were also charged in relation to a deception matter the same night, and interviewed for the theft of a ladies’ handbag on an Invicta bus on 22 May in Lilydale.

Lilydale Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Mark Smithwick said the men were charged with theft from motor car, obtaining property by deception and theft, and were bailed to appear at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on 12 October.

Power raid POLICE are searching for thieves who took off with power tools last week, after forcing open a door at a Beresford Road business in Lilydale.

Lilydale Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Mark Smithwick said that at 2.50am on Wednesday 3 June, unknown people forced a door open at the business.

He said the door may have been forced by attaching a cable from a vehicle to the door and then driving away.

The thieves stole power tools from the business, and Det Sgt Smithwick said police had yet to estimate the total cost of the stolen items.

HEALESVILLE Sanctuary is calling on residents to dig deep and donate as part of its Australian Wildlife Hospital Appeal, with a special visitor dropping in to support the cause.

Channel Nine’s Livinia Nixon visited the sanctuary’s hospital on Tuesday 2 June, to film an advertisement for the appeal, which is aiming to raise $200,000 over winter to keep the wildlife hospital going.

Ms Nixon stood with orphaned koala Gumnut and her keeper Amie Hindson for the shoot, and said money donated through the appeal would help other animals like Gumnut receive help when brought in injured or orphaned.

She said Gumnut was cared for “24 hours a day“ by Ms Hindson, being bottle-fed repeatedly during the day and taken home at night according to Zoos Victoria’s website, this care will continue for the next year.

She said the response to the exhibition had been “amazing”, and that the money raised from the event was all going to the brigade.

“It will go towards maybe equipment ... or we do have provisions for the replacements of vehicles – it’s up to the brigade really,” Ms Smith said.

Bill Proctor’s helmet, The Wombat, was the most sought-after piece, and sold for $305, followed by Fire and Filigree by Lynette Orzlowski, sold for $300.

The support of the CFA showed in the pieces sold off, with many of them paying tribute to the work that firefighters do to protect their communities.

One helmet had been fashioned into a fauxbird’s nest, with three eggs that read “thank you CFA”.

Ms Smith said that some pieces had been bought by members of the public and then donated back to the Warburton Fire Brigade.

The fire brigade and the Coombe estate have a common historical link – Dame Nellie Melba opened the Warburton Fire Station in February 1915.

Estate manager Daniel Johnson said that Melba’s granddaughter, the late Pamela Lady Vestey, supported the CFA. “She was very appreciative of the work they do, not just here at Coldstream, but throughout the region,” he said.

“So, it makes sense to do everything we can to utilise this property to recognise and assist the wonderful job the volunteers do.”

THOUSANDS of dollars from sold artworks will bolster the Warburton Fire Brigade, after decommissioned helmets were made into art and auctioned off last week, in a special event at Coombe’s Melba Estate.

The HelmART exhibition featured 32 decommissioned fire helmets, which were turned over to Yarra Valley artists and made into works of art.

From decorative paintings and mosaics, to miniature gardens and even a functional lamp, the former helmets took on a new life and adorned the walls of the Coombe gallery from 22 May to 2 June.

On Tuesday 2 June, the helmets were auctioned off, raking in about $2500 for the Warburton Fire Brigade.

Warburton Fire Brigade’s Centenary Events co-ordinator, Leila Smith, said the exhibition was organised for the brigade’s 100th birthday.

“As part of that, we were trying to engage various community members to be able to help celebrate the occasion,” she said.

“It started off as a fun

SCHOOL children in Upper Yarra will have greater opportunities for a healthy lifestyle, thanks to the dedicated team of volunteers at the Adcare Opportunity Shop and their supporters.

The shop is really punching above its weight when it comes to supporting the Upper Yarra community.

Shop manager Kathy Kearns said they were delighted when they wrote to five local primary schools offering a grant of $1000 each from the proceeds of the shop.

“We wanted them to direct the benefits to the students to promote a healthy lifestyle and asked them to give a brief outline of how they would like to spend the money,” Kathy said.

“We were really thrilled at what we got back.”

Each school had different projects and ways of addressing the brief.

Wesburn will spend the money on a fitness incursion, Millwarra at East Warburton and Millgrove will spend the money on a bike program, Yarra Junction will add a ‘fruity Friday’ to their three-day-a-week breakfast club, and Warburton on opening up their Stephanie Alexander kitchen to the community.

The shop also supports the Linc community welfare group, the Redwood Centre’s Second Bite food bank, a project in Cambodia, and has recently sent money to two areas in Vanuatu.

She has been on the job for nearly 30 years.

“Originally, it wasn’t this type of op shop, we supplied food parcels and clothing where it was needed in the community,” she said.

“We had a sale every two or three months with everything just set up in the hall.

“Now we have four rooms.”

Beryl Holton and Daphne Barber are also well over due for their ‘long service’ and remember when they used to clean houses for the local real estate agents as a side line to raise money to fund their welfare services.

“Food parcels were the main thing years ago, and we would do 10 to 12 a day,” Beryl said.

“They were especially in demand around Christmas time.”

The infrequent sales morphed into the op shop which is open on Tuesdays and every third Sunday of the month.

Kathy said it was doubly blessed with people very generous with donations, and a wonderful and growing customer base.

“We have one lady who moved away but still brings donations up here and we have people who come up from down the line and actually plan their visit to Warburton around the third Sunday,” she said.

The shop is very proudly displaying a sign showing the schools and other organisations that have received grants recently.

“The community really appreciates our little shop and we wanted to let them know how their donations benefit so many people, and for our customers, what we do with their money.”

Letters I WOULD like to thank Jeanette McRae for warning us of the possibility of mineral exploration within our area. I am absolutely appalled by the idea, and hope the council knocks it on the head.

In the United States, fracking has caused terrible damage to communities, and the environment. It has poisoned ground water, caused earthquakes in previously stable areas, and led to incidental harm through noise, air pollution, heavy vehicle traffic, etc.

There is also the matter of gas leakages with attendant risk of explosion -- just what we need in our bushfire-prone area. There is even an amusing story about the CEO of a minerals company who sued a fracking operation where he lives in Texas, because his house value plummeted.

The Healesville community needs to unite as a matter of urgency to oppose any such misdevelopment within our township, or anywhere near it.

A more general consideration is that even conservative organisations like the World Bank now recommend leaving fossil fuel reserves in the ground. Extracting it is guaranteed to speed up the cooking of our planet.

Let democracy work I URGE all councillors to defer any further action re: Planning Scheme Amendment C 146 Intensive Animal Husbandry until they face the ratepayers at the next election.

They can then declare their hand regarding this major change to our living conditions and give all the ratepayers a choice whether to change the planning scheme or not, a truly democratic choice and not, as it is now, driven by councillors without a mandate for this change.

This way, any perception of vested interest would be eliminated.

Mates on board IN a submission to the Victorian Parliament, the United Firefighters Union Australia (UFUA) has demanded the removal of volunteer fire-fighter representatives from the CFA board.

In their place the UFUA would replace volunteer representatives with their own handpicked mates.

Clearly, the UFUA are calling in the political favours owed to them by Premier Daniel Andrews, putting at risk the very foundation of our rural and regional fire services in Victoria - our volunteers.

The CFA board makes important decisions that have a direct impact on community safety and is responsible for one of the world’s largest volunteer organisations.

Volunteers make up 97 per cent of the CFA. Obviously, volunteer representation on this board is crucial to ensuring the people who truly serve our community are well looked after.

Already, CFA volunteers have contacted me seeking assurances from Premier Daniel Andrews that he won’t cave in to the UFUA's demands.

Our CFA volunteers give so much to serve rural and regional communities across Victoria and we rely on them in the hours of our greatest need.

Daniel Andrews must guarantee volunteer positions will remain on the CFA board to ensure our local volunteers’ voices are respected and heard.

A BIG ‘thank you’ is extended to the Yarra Ranges Council for the impressive redevelopment of the Brisbane Bridge in Warburton.

After being closed for works for two months, we believe it will soon be open again.

Residents have watched the restructuring process with great interest and pleasure.

In particular, I would like to acknowledge the time and effort invested by Cr Jim Child.

He has been an ardent advocate on behalf of our community in our quest to have the bridge’s deterioration addressed.

Although I won’t name them here, several individuals within council have been responsive, consultative and supportive during the planning process.

They also deserve our community’s acknowledgement and gratitude. They know who they are.

Following an accident on the bridge nearly three years ago, when a resident tripped on the uneven surface and sustained a broken collar bone, this public safety issue made the Mail’s front page news as ‘A Bridge Too Far’ (Tuesday, 12 March, 2013).

The Mail’s support of our local concerns has been greatly appreciated.

The process of redevelopment has been rather lengthy due to council’s need to incorporate heritage considerations.

However, now we have a smartly revamped bridge and the bonus of an adjoining footbridge to ensure safe pedestrian access across the river. Well done!

Thank you very much to all who have been involved in achieving this great result.

Road needs attention I READ the recent article in your paper and would like to add my comments.

As a regular user of the road between Healesville and Eildon, I certainly agree the road needs attention.

I think there should be guard rails on the ‘drop’ side of the road, no matter in which direction you are travelling.

Also, it seems ridiculous the speed limit is 60km/h for some distance out of Healesville, and then changes to 80km/h when you hit the start of the bends about the tanks.

The speed limit should be 60km/h or a maximum of 70km/h all the way from the tanks to the Black Spur Inn, not just over the spur.

It is certainly not safe with an 80km/h speed limit.

Also, even though there are a few slow-vehicle pull-offs, the spots where the road is wider and there is a verge for a short distance where a vehicle could pull over out of the way should have bitumen on them.

At the moment, most of them just have a bit of gravel on them, and they are not safe to pull over into, especially in the wet or the dark and you have someone sitting right on your tail.

If they were more solid, it would give more chances for slow vehicles to pull over.

I agree with the solid line all the way over the spur, but there are a few places where the road is straight enough and the view long enough that they could perhaps have a dotted-line where vehicles could pass.

This may help to stop the idiots who pass other vehicles over the solid line in ridiculous places.

Pages from the past Healesville Guardian 8 June 1935 Yarra Flats YARRA Flats (now known as Yarra Glen) was passing through a memorable sporting era during the 1870s but was really vegan in the 1860s.

If the Yarra Flats Hotel (now ably presided over by Mr Lithgow) could only speak of the wonderful tales of the early days it could unfold.

This historic landmark was the rendezvous of the sporting fraternity of the district, including Lilydale and Healesville.

It was also the stopping place for the old stage coach. Its stables are still standing at the rear of the building. The coaches from the city to the Flats passed through Heidelberg, Kangaroo Ground and Christmas Hills. At this time, the Blacks’ Spur had become passable for vehicular traffic and soon the route from the city through Ringwood, Lilydale and Heidelberg was taken.

The change over dealt a severe blow to the old place.

Mr Batt and his wife were extremely popular while in control of the old hostelry which they took over from Mr Tom Bell in the late 1860s. Mr. Bell was the original owner and licensee. It was a fine sight on hunting days to see those participating in this favourite pastime assemble on the old road in front of the hotel. The ladies sitting sidesaddle were dressed in the old fashioned riding habits with just the toe of a boot peeping out from the stirrup.

Transport Deputation AT A public meeting held in the Memorial Hall last week, the following resolution was adopted: ‘That this meeting of residents of Healesville and surrounding districts urges that if any curtailment of transport should be considered, it should be in the direction of limiting road services rather than the railway.’

On the same night, Cr Dawborn communicated the resolution to the Transport Regulation Board and forwarded a petition with 400 signatories against any possible restriction of the railway

Passing of Mrs Hilditch THE many friends of Mrs Jack Hilditch were grieved to learn of her death on Thursday 27 May. Mr and Mrs Hilditch lived at East Warburton for many years and owned ‘Glenola’ guest house.

It was burnt down in 1940 and since then they have lived quietly at Armadale. Mrs Hilditch was very popular throughout the district for her great generosity.

In the days of horse riding, parties would ride for miles from East Warburton and always finish at Glenola for a meal and sing song around the fire.

In the 1930s, Warburton Football Club always held their dinners at Glenola and wonderful evenings were spent there. In appreciation of the work done by Mr and Mrs Hilditch, the Football Club planted a flowering gum tree in the football grounds.

Reconciled, ready for healing

By JESSE GRAHAM INDIGENOUS culture and history was celebrated, remembered and discussed last week, when more than 100 community members gathered for a special Reconciliation Week event.

The Yarra Ranges Council held its annual Reconciliation Week event on Thursday 4 June, at Healesville’s Memo Hall, drawing residents, community groups and Indigenous elders for a day to explore and discuss Indigenous culture and heritage.

Councillor Fiona McAllister was Master of Ceremonies at the event, which opened with a didgeridoo performance by Robert Brambett and a moving Welcome to Country by Aunty Joy Wandin Murphy.

After a Wayapa Wuurrk visualisation meditation by Jamie Thomas, keynote speaker Professor Mick Dodson took the stage.

Prof Dodson spoke about the harm wrought on the Indigenous community since the arrival of Europeans in 1788, and the “seeds of distrust” sown between the two communities since.

He said the “impact of British intrusion”, as well as policies from successive colonial and post-colonial governments, such as those that created the stolen generations, dealt a “legacy of misunderstanding and mistrust” between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.

“This legacy remains in our society today,” Prof Dodson said.

“By understanding the events of the past and the importance they have on Aboriginal people, and seeing the events through our eyes, the healing can begin.”

The conversations on the day centred largely on the concept of ‘Indigenous ways of knowing’, which Yarra Ranges Indigenous Development officer Garry Detez described as “stuff based on connection.”

“You’re connected to all that is, rather than the western way of knowing you’re separate from all that is,” he said.

“Once you start to understand the connections you have to your natural environment, that’s when the notions of family, kinship and country come into that space, when you can connect to all that is and bringing that into the organisations around their power structures.”

A discussion panel featuring HICSA’s Brooke Collins and Anne Jenkins, family violence worker Rose Sullivan, Mr Detez, Prof Dodson and Mr Thomas, then took questions from the audience.

The panellists spoke about the importance of passing on Indigenous stories, culture and attitudes of respect caring, sharing, to future generations, as well as their own influences and motivations in working towards reconciliation.

juries - you never did it - but don’t perpetuate them by ignoring it, but help heal it,” he said.

Films aplenty at Warburton festival

By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS THE 32nd annual Warburton Film Festival is on again this June, showcasing both Australian and international films.

The festival, which runs for three days, starts on Friday 12 June and will screen nine feature films plus 11 short films produced by local, young and upcoming filmmakers.

Both junior and senior divisions of the ‘show us your shorts’ youth film competition will be screened on Friday afternoon.

The winner of the short film competition will be presented with the ‘Golden Shorts’ reward and a $2000 prize.

Yarra Ranges Film Society president John Bodin said the short films submitted were really impressive.

“The shorts screened on the opening night are of a really high quality, and the makers show enormous potential,” he said.

“It gives great encouragement to any person who is on the threshold of making a transition into a professional industry.”

President of Federation of Victorian Film Societies (FVFS) John Arkins will officially open the festival on Friday night.

The Yarra Valley community, who share an interest in cinema in a social setting, will avail themselves of a variety of diverse films from Australia and overseas on offer over three days.

Special guests director Kasmir Burgess and cinematographer Marden Dean will conduct a Q & A session after their opening night film ‘Fell’.

Mr Bodin said the festival gave a screen to young filmmakers and gave established directors a chance to exhibit films to a new audience.

“We really try to highlight films we think haven’t got the recognition they deserve or may have only had a limited release,” he said.

One film Mr Bodin is really excited about is Australian psychological drama ‘The Babadook.’

“It’s on late, but worth seeing and there are still plenty of tickets available.” he said.

BASED on the Disney amusement park ride, Tomorrowland is an invigorating and inspiring (if clunky) experience.

Tomorrowland follows Casey (Britt Robertson), a smart teenager who discovers a wondrous alternate dimension created by Earth’s brightest minds.

Tomorrowland is an incredibly entertaining film, but with notable problems in its plot and pacing. Much of the film is spent with the heroes enroute to Tomorrowland, so the long build-up may tire some viewers.

The impending apocalypse is very vague and the villains are poorly explained (though Hugh Laurie, as the fatalistic Governor Nix,

does get a great monologue).

The first act also has some heavy-handed dialogue about the themes of optimism and innovation. But once the talky set-up is finished and everyone goes along for the ride, Tomorrowland quickly becomes exhilarating.

The cast has fantastic chemistry, and George Clooney is compelling as a bitter inventor whose hope is steadily restored. The action scenes are powerful and energetic, and the visual design is dazzling, replete with sleek ’50s-style futurism.

But the best part of the film is Raffey Cassidy as the android Athena. Cassidy is wise, mature and composed beyond her years, and a dynamo in the fight scenes. This young actress has a great career ahead of her.

Tomorrowland lacks certain details and needed tighter editing, but is still a beautiful and optimistic thrill-ride.

MARYSVILLE’S main street seems whole once again, after the town’s multi-million dollar hotel officially opened last April.

The Vibe Hotel and Conference Centre was officially opened on Tuesday 21 April, which many believe is a symbol for Marysville reopening for business.

At the official opening, Regional Development Minister Jaala Pulford and Toga Group chairman Ervin Vidor unveiled an opening plaque before a conference room full of Marysville identities, local celebrities and politicians.

The 101-room hotel, which features a cafe and restaurant, has already seen 4000 guests since opening on 12 February, and the community gathered at the event which marked the next step in the reconstruction of the town.

Identities such as sculptor and painter Bruno Torfs, politicians and community members filled out the conference room at the $28 million hotel for the opening, celebrating with food and drink in hand.

Hotel staff member Jane Ackerman who worked in the town before the fires, summed up the opening simply: “It’s good to have something here,” she said.

“It feels complete.”

Murrindindi mayor Margaret Rae said the opening of the hotel sent a mes-

sage that the town had been attempting to send for years - that Marysville is open for business.

“For a long time now, Marysville has been trying to describe itself to people as ‘we’re open for business’, and it’s really, really hard to do that,” Cr Rae said.

“It’s hard for small businesses to be self-sustaining without some larger enterprise.

“We lost all of our larger venues, this is the first of the large ones to come back.”

The hotel runs down a substantial portion of Murchison Street and sits on the site of two former town icons, the Keppel Hotel and the Cumberland Hotel, which manager Phil Wilmot said was acknowledged in the new facility.

“With our conference rooms, we’ve acknowledged the five major guesthouses - Cumberland, Marylands, Karinga, Keppel and Kitchener,” Mr Wilmot said.

Cr Rae said that the Vibe ‘filled a hole’ in the town’s main street and that she hoped word of mouth would quickly spread to bring more tourism into the town.

“The old Cumberland has been physically missing, and there hasn’t been that sort of focus point for this part of the street,” she said.

“What the Vibe coming here has done is filled the hole with something of substance that is attractive, that people will come to, but also adds energy

New plan for memorials ROADSIDE memorial policies could be changed to ban photographs of road trauma victims under a review by Vic-Roads, and residents are being invited to have their say.

VicRoads announced earlier this year that it was reviewing its roadside memorial policy, which has been in place for the last 15 years.

Using an online ‘consultation hub’, Vic-Roads opened forums with prompts and questions about what people would like to see change - or stay the same - in policies about roadside memorials.

In a recently released paper, VicRoads outlined the result of the first round of consultation and the proposed changes to the memorial policies.

Under the suggested new policy, photos will not be permitted on memorials, “as they may be distressing to the broader community”.

Offensive symbols and language, weapons and objects which may offend, such as beer cans, would not be allowed on memorials, and memorials will have to be located at least three metres from the edge of any road seal.

Memorials will also not be allowed on traffic islands, attached to road infrastructure, such as light-posts or barriers, on roundabouts and should not include reflective materials, lighting, and should not pose a threat if crashed into.

Flowers, under the suggested policy, would be allowed as a temporary memorial, as long as they are not wrapped in plastic or materials that may cause litter or harm to wildlife.

Meanwhile, crosses will be allowed, if they are constructed from timber, neutral in colour and not be longer than 850mm long - 600mm out of the ground - or wider than 400mm.

Plaques will be acceptable, but must not be attached to road infrastructure or utility poles, and should not be larger than 200mm by 200mm.

The paper also lists a ‘transitional timeframe principle’, where memorials may be established with limited restrictions in the short-term, but will be made ‘discreet’ over time, and after 13 months may be relocated or removed.

The measures were formulated by a working group, which included representative of some councils, Road Trauma

Support Services Victoria, Road Trauma Families Victoria, Victoria Police, Transport Accident Commission (TAC), Monash University Accident Research Centre and VicRoads.

The group was also informed by VicRoads’ online consultation hub, which had 4467 visitors during the 29 March 26 April consultation period. However, of those visitors, 326 contributed comments, and 231 actively joined the discussion forums on memorials.

The participants were split down the middle on whether memorials should have a consistent design, with half stating that memorials should be “unique and personal to support people grieving”, and the other half wanting consistent appearance to reduce driver distraction or upsetting those linked to the victims.

Some of the participants suggested non-religious standard markers, such as those used in South Australia.

A VicRoads survey of 178 people found 63 per cent of respondents were in favour of roadside memorials to remember loved ones, and that 61 per cent said memorials encouraged safer driving.

However, 54 per cent said that memorials could be distracting for drivers and 53 per cent supported a consistent look for memorials.

The Mail contacted VicRoads with questions about the proposed changes, including whether public comments would shape or change some of the proposals.

A spokesperson said the paper proposed guidelines and principles for further feedback.

“It is not a final policy position,” the spokesperson said.

The full paper is available at consult. vicroads.vic.gov.au/roadside-memorial, and residents are still able to comment on the paper and its proposals.

After the latest consultation stage, the new Roadside Memorial Policy will be submitted to VicRoads’ senior leaders for approval - if approved, the new policy will be in place in the second half of the year.

SNOW season has come at last, with Lake Mountain Alpine Resort opening its gates for its first weekend of winter, bringing eager visitors from around the state.

Crowds of visitors flocked to the mountain’s opening day on Saturday 6 June, for an opening weekend that included toboggan runs, snow-shoe trails and cross-country skiing.

Children were well catered

for, with the resort expanding its Snowman’s Village and running activities such as a flying fox and outdoor laser skirmishes.

Resort manager Scott Gamble said there was “something for everyone” at the resort, and that going to the snow didn’t have to mean strapping on skis and taking on snow sports.

“New snow-shoe trails are a perfect introduction to snow sports and suitable for children

and adults,” Mr Gamble said.

“There are short trails or allday hikes, and is a great way for anyone to experience the beauty of our renowned cross-country trails without having to ski.”

The resort features 40 kilometres of snow trails, and this year opened its Fischer Nordic Demo Centre, where budding skiers can learn skills before hitting the slopes.

Young guns drive the game to interleague

By KATH GANNAWAY THE most promising young football talent from around the Yarra Valley and the Dandenong Ranges headed south over the Queen’s Birthday Holiday weekend to represent the DRJFL in the annual interleague competition.

The under-11s, under-12s and under-13s players - representing 12 clubs - played in the Price-Purdon Academy Goodwill Youth Program on Sunday in sunny but chilling conditions at Casey Fields.

Under-13s coach, Yarra Glen’s Brad Hall said the competition was an opportunity for the players to compete against kids of the same age level, often with kids they went to school with but who played for different clubs, and to experience different game styles.

“Everyone gets the chance to get good game time and play in different positions.

“It’s about football development, and it’s not a winning and losing thing, there’s still a strong element of participation as well as competitiveness.”

Best-on-ground awards went to Patrick Huynh from Wesburn in the under-11s, Jude Hay from Woori Yallock in the under-12s and Yarra Glen’s Harrison Keeling in the under13s.

DRJFL representative teams in the under-14s, under-15s, under-16s and under17s played on Saturday and Monday in the Subway Dandenong Junior Carnival against South East Juniors, Frankston District and Mornington Peninsula.

Wandin in convincing win

By JUDY ORREN DIVISION 1 SENIORS Wandin 23.12 (150) d Belgrave 16.12 (108) WANDIN continues to show its dominance after another convincing win, this time over Belgrave.

Wandin had a good first half and set up its win with a 7-goal-to-1 second quarter to go into halftime with a 48-point lead. The second half was a real shoot out, and Belgrave did take it right up to league leaders. The third term saw both sides slot seven goals in what was a free-flowing, highstandard term. The last quarter saw Belgrave outscore Wandin 5 goals to 4, but it was Wandin’s dominance early in the game which produced their sizeable lead, and it was always going to be too tough to haul in.

They broke the game open somewhat in the second term, booting 4 goals to 1 and Woori’s lead at the half was 21 points. The third term saw just the three goals scored, but they all went Woori’s way, and their three-quarter time lead was out to a sizeable 38 points. The last quarter was a goal feast as both sides played free-flowing, hard-running football. There were 14 goals scored in an entertaining term with both sides booting seven goals, which saw Woori come away with a handy sixgoal victory.

Monbulk 19.19 (133) d Yarra Glen 6.8 (44) For the first half of this clash, Yarra Glen was reasonably competitive, but Monbulk just had the better transition of play and held a 29-point lead at the main break. Monbulk really hit its stride in the third as Yarra Glen started to look a little flat-footed. They booted 7 goals to 1 to be in complete control at the final change, leading by 56 points. The last term was all Monbulk, and it really should have won by more. In the end, they finished the day booting 4.9 in the last, while Yarra Glen could only manage one behind.

Olinda Ferny Creek 12.7 (79) d Mount Evelyn 10.9 (69) Despite the final margin being just 10 points, Olinda did control the game for the most part. The first term was an even tussle with Olinda leading by just four points. The second term was where Olinda got its run going, and it booted 6 goals to 2 to lead by 29 points at the main break. Mount Evelyn hit back pretty hard in the third and played a more accountable game. They scored 3 goals to 1 and was only 17 points in arrears at the last break. Mount Evelyn tried hard in the last and kept coming, but Olinda was patient and poised when it mattered to come away with an important four points.

The third quarter was a dire battle with both sides throwing their bodies on the line. Upwey booted 3 goals to 2 for the quarter and Healesville’s lead was cut to just three points at the three-quarter time break. The last quarter saw Upwey’s experience shine out as they controlled the tempo of the game. With ball in hand, they booted 5 goals to 1 to finish the day off in style and come away with a very good 19-point victory.

DIVISION 2 SENIORS Yarra Junction 11.8 (74) drew with Alexandra 11.8 (74) Both sides haven’t had the best season as Junction sit second bottom on the ladder, while Alexandra sits on the bottom. However, they put on a nail-biting contest from start to finish.

Despite both teams being a bit disappointed, the clash ended in a draw, it was probably a just result. Junction led by just eight points at quarter time, but Alexandra turned that deficit into a three-point lead by half-time. The third term went goal-for-goal with three goals each being slotted.

Alexandra led by just the one point at the final change. The last quarter was a great hard contested battle, goals were hard to come by as both defences work tirelessly. The quarter produced two goals apiece and come final siren, scores were all tied up as both sides walked off wondering what else could have been done.

Gembrook Cockatoo 9.9 (63) d Yea 8.10 (58) Gembrook snuck home in a close battle over Yea and now sit one game clear in fourth spot.

Yea looked to have more run in the first half and went into half-time with a 15-point lead, thanks to a 4 goal to 1 second term. Gembrook’s defence in the third was superb as they held Yea scoreless while slotting through three majors of their own to take a seven-point lead going into three-quarter time. The last quarter was a great contest, both sides hit every contest at 100 per cent with the game in the balance right up to the final siren.

Both sides booted three goals for the quarter, but it was Gembrook that held on to win by just five points after a classic encounter.

Emerald 13.6 (84) d Seville 9.13 (67) Emerald came away with a 17-point victory, but had to work pretty hard throughout to hold off a determined Seville. Seville led by four points at the first change but Emerald turned that deficit into a 19-point lead at half-time after a pretty good 5-goal-to-1 quarter. The second half was a very even contest, with both sides scoring six goals apiece. As hard as Seville battled, they just couldn’t make inroads into Emerald’s lead. Thornton Eildon 9.15 (69) d Kinglake 5.4 (34) Thornton has now played what were two unbeaten sides in a row, and has come out on top in both games. First it was Emerald, and now has dealt Kinglake its first loss of the season with a dominant second-half performance. Kinglake did lead this clash at half-time by eight points in what was a low-scoring first two quarters, with scores at 4.2 (26) to 2.6 (18). The second half was where Thornton Eildon shone. They stifled Kinglake’s run and was able to force turnovers and make it pay on the scoreboard. They booted 4 goals to 1 in the third to grab an 11-point lead at the last change. The last quarter was more of the same. In fact, Thornton should have won by more than its eventual 35-point margin as they finished the day, scoring 4.7 to just 1 to win convincingly and put its hand up as a genuine premiership threat.
