Depp dog mercy dash

By JOLENE OGLE LOCAL businessman and former Ansett pilot Perry Taylor is used to flying the rich and famous around the world, but a couple of weeks back he had two special passengers on board.

Perry was charged with returning Johnny Depp’s two Yorkshire terriers, Pistol and Boo, home after Federal Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce ordered them out of the country.

The local connection to this international story was uncovered by Noosa Today columnist Benny Pike.

Perry said he was bound by confidentiality, but could reveal the 15 May flight to Los Angeles was a pleasure and Pistol and Boo were very well behaved.

“The dogs were wonderful,” he said.

“They were better than anyone I’ve met on a midnight flight from Bali on Jetstar.”

The exercise is said to have cost $400,000, but Perry said “it didn’t cost the taxpayers a cent” and he spent most of his time apologising to the dogs for the “Australian bureaucratic” mess.

For Perry, who piloted the Rolling Stones during their Australian national tour last year, it’s all in a day’s work.

“It’s all part of the job,” he said.

“When I first met Johnny Depp I had no idea who he was. I had to ring my wife and ask her who Johnny Depp is. Now we’re good friends.”

On Tuesday the Sydney Morning Herald reported the pilot who brought Pistol and Boo into Australia undeclared could face up to two years in prison for their role in the highprofile quarantine issue.

Perry has denied he was the pilot who brought the two dogs in to Australia.

The tragic death of ex-Noosa locals Terry and Jenny Law has touched the hearts of many, hitting headlines over the past week.

Local media has reported that Mr and Mrs Law, both 74, were found by police in their Sippy Downs unit on Friday 15 May, after the alarm was raised by long-time friend, who wished to remain unnamed.

The friend had on Thursday afternoon opened a letter written

by Mrs Law detailing their decision to die on their own terms.

It explained Mr Law’s terminal cancer diagnosis, Mrs Law’s chronic back complaint, the extreme pain they were in and instructions to spread their ashes into the sea.

Mr Law had, apparently, a cancerous kidney removed about two years ago and the disease had spread to his lungs.

The envelope was marked with a post date from Wednesday.

Mr Law who was a passionate golfer, had been a member at Noosa Golf Club for many years before he and his wife moved to Sippy Downs about four or five years ago.

Mrs Law was known for her daily five kilometre swims at Kawana Aquatic Centre.

The news of their deaths came as a huge shock.

THE future of the Noosa TAFE site remains unclear despite the introduction of a new bill into parliament that will return the ownership of all QLD training facilities to the government.

The Queensland Training Asset Management Bill 2015 is designed to return Qld training assets to the Department of Education and Training, preventing them from being sold to private investors.

Minister for Training and Skills Yvette D’Ath said the bill was a significant step in implementing the Rescuing TAFE commitment.

“Abolishing the Queensland Training Asset Management Authority (QTAMA) and returning the management and control of the state’s training assets to the Department of Education will provide certainty to

TAFE Queensland,” she said.

However, Member for Noosa Glen Elmes said it is unclear whether all assets will be “rescued” or just TAFEs that are currently operating.

“The bill is all about TAFE... the government wants to restore it but we don’t know yet how they want to restore it. We don’t know in terms of the Noosa TAFE college, or others that may have closed, whether it’s the government’s intention to reopen them,” he said.

“I’ve been asking questions, to see if this Bill applies to Noosa, but I’m yet to get a response.

“I will continue to ask them in regards of what the government’s view of Noosa is.”

The Noosa TAFE site was closed in July 2014 after dwindling enrolment numbers made the facility unviable.

The TAFE originally opened in 2006 with 714 stu-

dents and an arts-based program list, but by 2013 student numbers had dropped to 265, 40 of whom were high school students who didn’t access the campus.

Mr Elmes said it wasn’t surprising the campus closed with a course program that wasn’t training and preparing locals for the workforce.

“The TAFE was never dreamed of being, nor did it become, a place where people would go and gain skills that would prepare them for the workforce,” he said.

Mr Elmes said the TAFE was “clearly not working”, and to make the centre viable in the future the TAFE facility will need to become a training space for work-ready skills.

“It must be a meaningful college that teaches people skills that enables them to get a job,” he said. “We’ve had enough basket-weaving classes.”

MORE drivers are being caught driving under the influence of drugs than alcohol, according to statistics following the latest traffic blitz at Federal on Thursday 21 May. In what was a joint operation of Noosa, Pomona, Cooroy and Eumundi policing units, 475 breath tests were carried out during a major operation on both the north and south bound lanes of the Bruce Highway near Federal from 8pm to 3am on Thursday 21 May. Of the drivers tested, two were charged with minor drink driving offences, while six were charged with drug-driving.

Noosa Heads Officer in Charge Senior Sergeant Steve McReight said the results weren’t surprising as more officers are trained to test drivers for drug use than ever before.

“As we have more officers trained, I believe we’ll see more drug drivers caught,” he said.

Other offences included one person charged with drug possession, one driver charged with driving an unregistered vehicle and one person charged with driving while unlicensed.

Repeat offender A 20-yEAR-Old Noosa man has pleaded guilty to drink driving after being caught driving drunk twice in only four hours.

The man was pulled over by police while driving on Noosa drive, Noosa Heads, on 1 May and was charged with drink driving with a blood alcohol content (BAC) of 0.16 per cent.

The man was then pulled over again four hours later and charged with drink driving with a BAC of 0.116 per cent.

The man pleaded guilty in Noosa Magistrates’ Court on 19 May to both counts of drink driving, obstructing a police officer and driving while suspended and was fined $3500 and disqualified from driving for four years.

Get used to gridlock

By JOLENE OGLE GROWING frustration over the gridlock traffic on Beckmans Road looks to only increase as Noosa MP Glen Elmes said it’s unlikely the State Government will fund the long-awaited Tewantin Bypass.

Parents doing the daily school drop-off and pick-up from Noosaville State School are growing more and more frustrated with the daily congestion on the thoroughfare road.

Last Monday, Noosa Today counted more than 50 cars linedup from the Eumundi Noosa Road roundabout to the school roundabout with a drive time of 15 minutes to travel from the corner of Beckmans Road and St Andrews Drive to the school turn off.

A Tewantin Bypass was planned in 2000 when the State Government and Noosa Council signed a de-maining agreement that would see the council take over responsibility for Beckmans Road and the State Government investigate building a bypass.

But, Mr Elmes said while the bypass is “desperately needed”, there is no obligation on the State Government to pay for the muchneeded bypass which was estimated to cost $30 million back in 2006 despite the agreement.

On 31 October 2006 in parliament, Mr Elmes asked the then Minister for Transport and Main Roads Paul Lucas what stage the planning process had reached and when work would commence on the Tewantin Bypass.

The congestion on Beckmans Road is likely to remain with Member for Noosa Glen Elmes doubtful the State Government will fund the Tewantin Bypass project.

Mr Lucas said, under the agreement signed by the State Government and Noosa Council in 2000, Main Roads had no obligation to fund a Tewantin Bypass or a specific timeframe to construct it.

More recently, a letter to Mr Elmes from Minister for Transport and Main Roads Scott Emerson dated 20 August 2014 stated the Department of Transport and Main Roads (DTMR) had commenced a Northern Sunshine Coast Area Planning study.

Mr Emerson said future demand for a bypass of Beckmans Road will be investigated and “potential interim road upgrades”

may be developed at a “conceptual level”.

“It is expected that this areawide study will identify local areas and road corridors for further, more detailed study in due course,” he said.

“These further studies would be expected to commence in 2016, subject to the availability of funds within the State Planning Program.”

But, Mr Elmes said it is unlikely the more than $60 million needed to build the Tewantin Bypass will be made available in the budget due to be released on 14 July.

“Where is the money going to come from?” Mr Elmes said.

“Where is the state going to find the money to do the bypass?”

According to Mr Elmes, the State Government is still paying $4 billion in interest repayments on the State debt leaving just $43 billion to share around the state.

“It will be interesting to see what the economic plan is,” he said.

“The room Labor have to work in is very, very narrow. I’ll be interested to see what rabbit he is going to pull out of the hat.

“If there is a rabbit, it will be a very skinny one.”

Nicholls wants it on ‘the list’ SHADOW Minister for Infrastructure, Planning, Small Business, Employment and Trade Tim Nicholls was in Noosa on Tuesday and he took the opportunity to throw his support behind the Tewantin Bypass.

Travelling from Brisbane to Hervey Bay, Mr Nicholls said his trip was a chance to travel the Bruce Highway to “see some of the problems (he) hears about” as well as talk to local communities and “find out what’s going on”.

Mr Nicholls said he spoke to Noosa Council about a number of issues including Beckmans Road, which he said needs to be considered in the coming budget.

“There’s a transport study currently underway by TMR. The

results of that are expected to trigger the agreement to force the state to build that road,” he said.

But the study is only designed to operate at a “conceptual level” and Mr Nicholls said that’s not good enough.

“Conceptual ideas are good up to a point and at some stage the rubber has to hit the road and there has to be a road,” he said.

“I would be certainly saying if it meets the criteria the Government should be putting it in their list of projects to be funded and they should be putting that well and truly forward.

“At the moment it’s on the ‘long list’, it’s on the never-never.

“It’s a road that might be built

Mr Nicholls said, if the numbers stack up, the Tewantin By-

pass needs to go on the list that will see it considered for funding.

“At the moment, it’s not even there,” he said.

Noosa urged to get with the times ANOTHER major development has sparked passionate debate in and out of Noosa Council Chambers, but deputy mayor Bob Abbot said Noosa needed to get with the times.

In a report to the Planning and Organisation Committee meeting on Tuesday afternoon, council staff recommended the approval of the planned development for 139 Eumundi Noosa Road and 30 Lionel Donovan Drive that would see a 24-hour fuel station, convenience store and fast food outlet constructed.

Issues were raised by the Planning and Organisation Committee in regards to the competition the development would pose to local business, but Cr Abbot said if developments such as this aren’t approved then the only 24hour service station and fast food outlet would remain in Noosaville’s residential area.

Cr Abbot said there was a need for a 24-hour fuel station “in town” and said there needed to be some “re-thinking” on 24-hour trading.

“Why don’t we get it operating so there are 24-hour services? Why do we limit ourselves and a lot of what we do in town planning,” he said.

“My view is do you want it in a residential area? Is that what we’re trying to achieve by stopping this sort of thing from happening on this site?”

Cr Abbot said the council was being “anal” about the development and questioned whether the council needed to think more broadly.

“Is that not the type of facility you see everywhere you go nowadays? Will it not resolve some of the problems we have?” he said.

“Unless you go to McDonald’s, you cannot get a decent cup of coffee in this town after 8pm.”

Local business owners gathered outside the council chambers before the meeting to protest the inclusion of a Tradie’s Cafe in the development application.

Noosaville Snack Bar owner Cindy Carington-King, who has operated in the same building for five years, said she believed the economic analysis of the proposed development didn’t consider the existing services.

“They haven’t got their figures right,” she said. “There are three industrial snack bars, plus a cafe and a number of mobile food vans that come into the area and service that side (of the road), plus we deliver. A great deal of our business is to that side of the road.”

Cindy said local businesses are already struggling to keep afloat and the addition of another fast food outlet would only make things more difficult.

“Another reason they gave us is people can’t get across the road, people don’t want to cross the road,” Cindy said. “But we see people cross the road there all the time and we deliver.”

Cr Tony Welling said it was a “challengeable assumption” to assume people didn’t or wouldn’t cross the road.

“It’s not that difficult. It’s not Parramatta Road after all,” he said. “It has a nice big median strip.”

The decision on the proposed development will now go to the General Committee meeting on 1 June.

Ted set to edge out Clive

By JOLENE OGLE LNP member Ted O’Brien has announced he will run for the seat of Fairfax at the next Federal Election against the current member Clive Palmer.

In his election campaign announcement, Mr O’Brien said it was time for “real representation” and to “take Clive Palmer to account”.

“Not for the sake of Palmer, but at the end of the day when you actually do live in an electorate and you are embedded in a community, you get to understand their priority is about jobs, small business, schools, taking

care of their families and they need real representation and people who will deliver outcomes,” he said.

Mr O’Brien ran against Mr Palmer at the last Federal Election in 2013, losing the seat by a mere 53 votes after numerous recounts.

Mr O’Brien said his job now was to give the Fairfax electorate a voice, and said he looked forward to making a difference whether he won the election or not.

“I think there are always lessons to be learnt and it doesn’t matter if you win, lose, draw or whatever.

“Unless we are continuously improving what we can represent at the

election, then we are not doing our job,” he said.

“I think this time around for Fairfax, it will be different.

“The key difference is, more than anything, they now have had 18 months of an incumbent who isn’t here, who isn’t delivering and they’re losing.”

Speaking with Noosa Today, Mr O’Brien said although he didn’t carry the authority of someone in parliament, there were things he could do to help the people of Fairfax.

“I’m already busy getting back to grassroots and trying to listen to and help people,” he said.

Mr O’Brien said he was ready to roll up his sleeves and get stuck into the political race.

“It’s the good old-fashioned style of politics that I love,” he said.

“I love chatting to people in the streets… the kind of politics where you roll up your sleeves and it’s hands on.”

Member for Noosa and fellow LNP member Glen Elmes said he believed Mr O’Brien would “do well” in the next Federal Election.

“I think Ted will be an outstanding candidate,” he said.

“I also think overwhelmingly the people of Fairfax... woke up on the

Ted O’Brien.

Sunday morning after election night and thought ‘what have we done?’ I think they will treat Clive Palmer at the next Federal Election with about the same respect as he has treated them.

“I think Ted will do very well.”

Baking up a storm

By KATIE DE VERTEUIL ON Monday morning residents of Regatta Circuit Noosaville gathered together to sip tea, eat indulgent home bakes and raise money for a worthy cause.

Anne Bitter and Ian Hauser hosted the Cancer Council Biggest Morning Tea, Anne having baked up a storm for the occasion which drew in plenty of neighbours.

With her mother having passed away from cancer a few years ago, it had been Anne’s intention for a while now to hold the event to help raise money to find a cure for the tragic disease which has touched the lives of so many.

“I really just wanted to support the Cancer Council and the wonderful work they do,” Anne said.

“And at the same time, create a small function to bring neighbours together and strengthen the community spirit.”

Anne said she hoped the event would inspire other neighbourhoods to participate in the Biggest Morning Tea in future years.

“Most people here are affected by cancer in some way - we all want a cure that’s for sure - and this is a simple way that we can help at the grassroots,” she said.

The neighbours of Regatta Circuit, Noosaville, gathered on Monday to raise money for the Cancer Council.

Chappy faces the chop

By KATIE DE VERTEUIL THE seniors of Noosa District State High School are determined to keep their chaplain Shane Brigg on board, as lack of funds look to significantly decrease his hours by the end of the month.

The chaplaincy at Noosa District State High School has been developed over many years out of the keen partnerships between SU Queensland, the school, P&C, community sponsors and government funding.

Shane, fondly referred to as “Chappy” has been in his role at Noosa District State School for over three years now, and has become a much-loved and highly valued member of the school community.

Unfortunately, lack of funds means that it is likely Shane’s hours will be more than halved; cut down to just two days over the two campuses in Cooroy and Pomona.

He is integral in providing spiritual and emotional support, pastoral care, and creative connections for all students and staff, irrespective of religious beliefs.

As school chaplain, Shane also supports the wider school community in a range of ways, such as assisting students in exploring their spirituality; providing guidance on values and ethical matters; helping school counsellors and staff in offering welfare services and support in cases of bereavement, family breakdown or other crisis and loss situations.

With Shane already strapped for time, the decrease in hours will significantly impact on his ability to support all those in need.

With Year 7s now added to the school, there are even more students in need of Shane’s services and he is certain that the cuts will lead to constant waiting lists and an extremely “tricky balancing act” for him.

In light of the situation, Year 12

student Kriquet Thompson has set up an online petition for the school community to sign to show their support for Shane.

The school and wider community are encouraged to take the time to read the petition and show their support by sharing how Shane has helped them, a friend, family member or peer, or by simply signing it.

“If anyone needs someone to help or support them, Chappy is always there,” Kriquet said.

“He is the least judgemental person in the world.”

“For us as students, it is so important to have a supportive environment at school and Chappy plays a vital role in this,” fellow student Isabella Gibson agreed.

“The petition is to raise awareness of the importance of our Chappy and hopefully gain the support of the wider community,” Kriquet added.

“There is still this stigma that

Suncoast Community Telco, a locally based communications company that returns profits back in to the community, donated $3000 to the Integrated Family and Youth Services (IFYS) team who bought 29 roll-out swags for their youth homeless shelter.

The swags are insulated with a thin mattress for comfort and built-in bag to secure belongings that can all be rolled-up into a backpack for transporting.

Suncoast Community Telco’s Ron Strong said the swags were easy to use as they simply roll out and could be packed away in a matter of minutes.

IFYS youth homeless shelter co-ordinator Tania Larter said homelessness was an issue throughout the entire Sunshine Coast including Noosa, with youths coming to the shelter from

all over the coast to stay in the six-bed facility.

“We’re the only youth crisis accommodation available from Gympie to Caboolture,” she said.

“We’re nearly always full and the people coming to us can stay for three months.”

Tania said the swags would be a “massive” help to the young people who were sleeping rough across the Coast.

“Many teenagers are couch surfing at friend’s houses, but that doesn’t last forever,” she said.

Pride in their work

Ted Irvine of Ironman Asia, Adrienne Webb of Morgan’s Financial Ltd., Dr David Henshaw of Noosa Hospital, Molly Smith from The Boat House and Steve Heim of Unity Water were all acknowedged by their collegues for their dedication, passion and ongoing value to their propestive positions at the Club’s Pride of Work Awards night.

tin Noosa RSL Club, with about 60 people in attendance.

Noosa Rotary Club president Paul Porter said the program’s objectives were to promote vocational values, provide an opportunity for employers to publicly recognise employees delivering work ethics, encourage favourable employer/employee relationships and a sense of community pride in individual achievement and encourage involvement between Rotary and the business community.

WOW what a big few weeks for the Coast and especially Noosa, with the success of the Food and Wine Festival and last weekend’s Sport Festival.

Massive international and national PR, and it’s too hard to estimate the cash value of the tourist spend.

Congratulations to everyone involved from the organisers to the everyday volunteer and helper, it’s that united effort that generates and drives the success.

It’s no wonder hubby Perry looks a million dollars, and no doubt will continue flying the stars where and when ever needed.

The old saying, one man’s loss is another man’s gain is pretty spot on with the sad closing of the once-popular Noosa Heads Bowls Club.

For 45 years, the club operated until its forced closure two weeks ago.

It’s the second bowls club in the area, following Peregian, to close its doors. Once a terrific vibrant club and a real hub of entertainment for the Junction over the years.

The club also produced some champions with both national reps Kelsey Cottrell and Julie Keegan starting their careers there.

The constitution was dissolved with each member receiving a dividend of the expected $2.1 million, allowing each member to take around $20,000 with them to a nominated club. It appears Tewantin ($1.5 million) and Coolum ($700,000) are the big winners here. I just hope both clubs appreciate the goodwill here and show some the new members deserved respect.

New tree stands tribute to a rare soul

By KATIE DE VERTEUIL A MACADAMIA native has been planted to honour Tewantin’s Stacey Mowle, following her tragic passing in March last year.

The simple yet moving ceremony was held at the University of the Sunshine Coast on Thursday morning 21 May, with USC students and academics joining friends and family of Stacey to pay tribute to a truly beautiful soul.

Stacey was just 22 and in her third year of an OT degree at USC when she died in March 2014 from a heart condition called hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy.

Diagnosed with the illness aged 15, Stacey was determined to live life to the fullest and not let her medical label define her.

Inspired by Stacey’s story and her bravery battling through the illness along with her lovable personality, her classmates and academics at the university felt it appropriate that something be erected in her honour.

Just over a year on, this has become a reality, the tree, donated to USC by the Macadamia Conservation Trust and the Caboolture Regional Environmental Education Centre Nursery, having been planted in the university’s Moving Feast Community Garden.

Stacey’s mum Deb Waters, and sister Jackie were present at the tree planting.

Both family members were

confident that Stacey would have been greatly humbled by the tribute.

“She would be just so honoured and proud,” Jackie said.

“Absolutely ecstatic – never would she have thought this would be done in her memory.”

Deb agreed.

“It’s an incredible honour and a true reflection of how much of an impact Stace had here at the university,” Deb said.

“Not everyone gets a tree planted for them, so it really is special.”

Costly experiment

Butterflies boost LOCAL phone and data supplier Sunshine Coast Community Telco has long supported Sunshine Butterflies.

This relationship was strengthened this week through two means; the handing over of $5000 to the local charity and the establishment of new agreement where a percentage of Telco bills is given to the group.

Every business that signs up for Telco through Sunshine Butterflies founder Leanne Walsh will have a 2.5 per cent of their bill donated to the not-for-profit service, along with 20 per cent of any hardware purchases.

“Each year a percentage of our spend goes back into the community, and we have chosen to support Sunshine Butterflies for the amazing work they do and the fact that they are selffunded,” Telco spokesperson Rachel MellingsHerz said.

A grateful Leanne Walsh said the agreement would establish a constant revenue stream to ensure the maintenance of their latest project “Our Backyard”.

Considering council has only completed 39 per cent (should be 83 per cent) of budgeted capital works, reduced community spending and is involved in a protracted union intervention over wages and conditions, perhaps this costly experiment is unsustainable?

End for fishing industry THE front page story (Sea Change Planned, Noosa Today 21 May) highlights the absolute hopelessness of the once great and enjoyable commercial fishing industry.

Several years back, this industry was worth $800 million but today, because of both government policies and blinkers on bureaucrats, this industry is worth a mere $160 million.

At a time when our PM and Federal Treasurer are out there selling the budget with slogans such as “get out there and invest and have a go”, they obviously don’t include the Queensland commercial fishing industry.

In Noosa we are short on young fishers willing to “invest and have a go”. For over 20 years now we have periodically received investment warning to most (if not all) fisheries, coupled with Qld Fisheries “buy backs”, so I ask which father fisher will encourage his sons/daughters to become a commercial fisher?

Perhaps only a rich and influential one.

To some of us it appears the Queensland Government wants families to eat imported seafood products from far-Eastern sewer system aqua-farms. This, when the majority of our waters are not fished by either sector.

With regards to the section of the story where the author states “from the 17 public meetings with 500 attendees and 280 written submissions received from fishers, environmentalists, government agencies and others” and so on, seriously how can any human being make sense of that lot? And still they want more input.

Well, here is one - go to page 44 of Noosa Today (21 May) and view this thumping 92cm Snub-nosed Dart (or Oyster Cracker to us oldies) caught off the Noosa North Shore Beach.

Read both fishing reports in local papers and watch Burtee’s fishing segment Thursday night on Channel 7.

Why prolong the agony further? Just get on and get rid of family-owned and operated commercial fishing businesses and leave a select few commercial licences to the rich and influential, bring in expensive recreational fishing licences and bugger the pensioners and less fortunate in society as they can eat that imported seafood.

I REFER to Councillor Wellington’s response to Bob Jarvis’ concerns regarding the environmental levy.

I understand some of Cr Wellington’s response but I don’t believe he addressed all of Mr Jarvis’ concerns to satisfy the average Joe. I understand the intention of the Environmental Levy Policy but what has not been addressed is what benefits do I, as a ratepayer, get.

What specifically are the economic projects and these environmental programs?

It’s alright generalising but I think the average Joe would like to know where this money is going and what benefits he/she is going to receive.

I believe the focus and the crux of Mr Jarvis’questions related this, but Cr Wellington’s response has completely avoided addressing these questions.

THE Albert’s lyrebird lives in the temperate rainforest of the border ranges between Queensland and New South Wales. It is legendary not only for its song, considered to be louder and of higher quality than the supreme lyrebird, but because it is such a difficult bird to observe. Anna Fearnley has studied these captivating birds for the past three years. She has learnt their idiosyncrasies, found their display areas and unravelled their intriguing relationship with the red-necked pademelon. New life between the lines LOCAL author Neville Mills launched his latest book at Wallace House on Tuesday 19 May, with the help of Noosa Councillor Sandy Bolton.

Originally from South Africa, Neville and his wife moved to Noosa in 2008 where Neville has released one book and re-printed another.

Neville’s latest book The Curious Letters of Mervyn Mudal tells the story of Mervyn and Muriel Mudal who have moved to the Sunshine

Coast to start a new life.

Mervyn becomes a prolific writer as a way of understanding how to cope with his new lifestyle and the book contains both his letters and the replies from many famous people.

Neville said the launch at Wallace House was a great success with a great turnout of locals and plenty of books sold.

Book buffs buy big THE Rotary Noosa Daybreak Club has pulled off another successful Bookfest at the Noosa Leisure Centre this year.

The funds raised this year will be used to support Smart Pups training Assistance Dogs for children, to build water and sanitation facilities in schools and hospitals of the Solomon Islands, to provide Shelter Box relief in the earthquake disaster zone of Nepal, and to assist other local charities in our Noosa community.

Friday’s the day to drive the toll down FATALITY Free Friday is a nationwide campaign designed to help stop the carnage on our roads by raising driver safety awareness.

Motorists, particularly young people and their parents, are encouraged to get the latest vehicle and road safety advice from a host of experts at a Fatality Free Friday event at the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) on tomorrow (29 May).

USC Research Fellow Dr Bridie Scott-Parker is co-organising the event from 9am to 3pm on campus at Sippy Downs to provide free information for students, staff and the public on everything from car modifications, licensing and legislation to safety tips for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.

Queensland’s Department of Transport and Main Roads (DTMR) is presenting this event and will display a full-size hatchback where people can sign pledges to stay safe on the roads, and a special inspection vehicle with inspectors able to advise people on matters such as legal and illegal modifications.The Queensland Police Service will display a car and a motorcycle, with several officers providing a range of resources.

Dr Scott-Parker, who leads USC’s new Adolescent Risk Research Unit, will be on hand to explain her research findings on issues such as the effects of young people’s emotions on their behaviour as drivers or passengers, and the important role of parents in teaching safe driving.

A sombre reminder of the human impact of road deaths will be a collection of thongs representing the people killed on roads in the Sunshine Coast region in recent years.

Dr Scott-Parker, whose research focuses on the psychology of driving, said she was looking forward to chatting to the wider community about ele-

ments of road safety.

“We urge everyone who uses our roads to come to the university and engage in this event. This is such an important issue,” she said.

The outdoor event will be held between buildings on the centre of campus at Sippy Downs.

Double the reasons to stay safe on the road POLICE are getting tough on people who talk or text on their phone while driving, with double demerit points for those caught repeatedly breaking the law.

The tougher penalties are among a range of recommendations arising from last month’s Safer Roads, Safer Queensland forum at Parliament House where top level talks were held with road safety experts on ways to address an alarming spike in the 2015 Easter road toll.

Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Services Jo-Ann Miller and Minister for Main Roads and Road Safety Mark Bailey said all of the recommendations were strongly supported by key stakeholders, including the police, RACQ, Bicycle Queensland, the Motorcycle Riders Association of Queensland and the Queensland Trucking Association.

“It was the worst Easter road toll in Queensland in more than 20 years and we went into the forum with a collective determination to turn these terrible statistics around,” Ms Miller said.

Ms Miller said the Queensland Police Service would investigate expanding automatic number plate recognition technology in police vehicles.

“For too long, dangerous unregistered and unlicensed drivers have been over-represented in crash statistics.

Greater use of this technology will give police the resources they need to target reckless and irresponsible drivers,” Ms Miller said.

“We will expand training for our road policing officers to better detect and deter broader criminal activities, along with enhanced drug driving operations across the state.”

Minister Bailey said immediate measures would be taken to target distracted drivers and people who take drugs and get behind the wheel.

“Drivers caught committing repeat mobile phone offences within a year can expect double demerits, similar to those imposed on repeat offenders who don’t wear a seatbelt or a motorcycle helmet, or who exceed the speed limit by more than 20km/h,” he said.

“We will form a Citizen’s Taskforce that will report direct to government on important road safety issues and the steps that need to be taken to make our roads safer.

“Road safety is everyone’s business, but if it’s left to governments alone it will never work. It is the responsibility of all of us.”

The CoreLogic RP Data quarterly regional report showed some of Australia’s capital cities are having a ripple effect on key regional areas, such as the Sunshine Coast.

According to the data, Sunshine Coast dwelling sales have remained stable over the year, up just 0.6 per cent over the 12 months to February this year.

Over the year to March, house values rose by 6.3 per cent, or in dollar terms $29,945 to $508,148 and unit values were up $16,680 or 4.7 per cent to $370,910.

Other key measures of the health of the Sunshine Coast’s residential property market have also improved over the past year such as rental rates which have risen by 4.5 per cent for houses and 5.7 per cent for units, plus the average time on market has reduced and vendors are discounting their properties by less in order to secure a sale.

Bill’s unique Bali story Life of

Notes from the past FROM the mountains to the sea, from the surreal to the sublime this week. The sublime was a surprise “karmic cleansing ritual” spa treatment, bunged on by the management of the always-impressive Four Seasons Jimbaran Resort on our arrival just a few hours ago. I’m still tingling from the experience, so more about that next week. The surreal was another trip up into the Batukaru foothills to seek out a tourism pioneer on a hilltop in the jungle.

When it comes to pioneering the hippie trail in South East Asia, the names that first come to mind are Lonely Planet founders Tony and Maureen Wheeler, whose 1975 guide South East Asia On A Shoestring is generally considered to be the first in its field. But in fact a German design student named Hans Hoefer and a hippie known as Starr Black produced a slim guidebook to Bali, aimed mainly at Europeans, in 1970. Hoefer went on to found the Apa Insight Guide series, and I worked with him in 1984 to produce an Australian edition, so he gets a footnote in history, but the man whose long, steep driveway, right next door to Bali’s only silent retreat, I strained up this week is pretty much a forgotten figure in mainstream circles, which is just the way Bill Dalton likes it.

These days, Bill, now 71, is best known for his perceptive contributions to the free Bali Advertiser newspaper, but this lean, likeable, wispy-haired native of Massachusetts, has an incredible story to tell, and as he leads me through the dustbowl of construction work on the rambling home he shares with his Indonesian wife and two young children to his booklined office, I wonder if he may be reaching the point in his life when it is time to tell it.

Bill got his first taste of travel when he was eight or nine and his alcoholic father would drag him out of bed in the middle of the night and declare: “Come on, Billy, we’re going to New York City!” Perched on his dad’s lap, his little hands on the wheel, Bill would weave delightedly down the turnpike in the night, and more than once remembers standing in Times Square watching the grey dawn, before dad would drive sheepishly home to face the music from mum.

Such frightening adventures could have gone either way for an impressionable child, but in Bill they instilled a desire to roam free as soon as he could. After military service as a paramedic at army bases around the US and in a pretend war in the Dominican Republic, Bill got a university education courtesy of the GI Bill, and managed to wangle his way into Copenhagen University. He says: “The idea of Scandinavia always fascinated me, and when I saw that movie where Danny Kaye sails into Copenhagen Harbour singing, ‘wonderful, wonderful Copenhagen’, I knew where I wanted to go.”

During his college years, he noticed many of his Danish friends returning from adventures in the exotic East, wearing colourful Afghan coats and telling their stories in the coffee houses. So after graduation he used a $1000 inheritance to set out on an overland adventure, taking in Israel, Africa, India, Kathmandu and Burma, before running out of money in Thailand, where he became an English teacher. Along the way he kept hearing about this magical island called Bali, where anything was possible and dreams came true. This became his ultimate destination, but before he got there he had seen more of the Indonesian archipelago than many westerners do in a lifetime.

Part of Bill’s travelling mission was to find something to write about – he was still smarting about the rejection slips he had received for his first failed novel – so he kept voluminous travel notes in a spiral-bound folder. After years on the road, he found himself in a youth hostel in Cairns in 1973, sharing his notes about Indonesia with a couple of German students, when a Kiwi journalist interrupted and told him he should be selling this stuff, not giving it away. The Kiwi also mentioned that there was a hippie arts festival at a place called Nimbin in NSW the following week, and that would be the perfect place to sell.

Bill stole into the local library at night to “mimeograph” 800 copies of the six-page document. Then he and the Kiwi jumped on a motorbike and rode the length of Queensland to attend the Aquarius Festival, where he set up on the footpath and sold all of his copies in two days at 50 cents each. On his Bali hilltop, Bill breaks off from his story to find me the yellowed pages of that first edition of A Traveller’s Notes: Indonesia, a rusty staple still holding them together.

As well as providing pertinent details on where to find the best brothels and score dope, Bill’s notes include a wealth of hippie time capsules, like this: “You can sail all over Kalimantan and Sulawesi without bread if you go to ferry captain and say you haven’t any, he will more than likely take you.” Simple as that.

As time went on and the profits got reinvested into the creation of Moon Travel Guides, Bill found himself chased out of Australia for overstaying his visa, then chased all over Indonesia for referring to First Lady Suharto as “Madam Ten Percent.” He eventually cleaned up his guidebooks to ensure distribution, but he still has all his original notes, from Australia as well as Asia, and it might be time to take another look at them.

Our Backyard overwhelms

By KATIE DE VERTEUIL FUNKY boots, cowboy hats and bright smiles were donned on Sunday as around 100 people gathered at Sunshine Butterflies’ Cooroibah property ‘Our Backyard’ for a country lunch fund-raiser.

Organised in conjunction with local restaurant Gaston and Sunshine Coast University, the fundraiser was created to raise money to support the Our Backyard project as well as being an assessment piece for the six public relations students responsible for putting the event together.

With a perfectly sunny morning, the luncheon proved a wonderful success with more than $8000 raised. A figure which Sunshine Butterflies founder Leanne Walsh is overwhelmed by.

“We were hoping for maybe $2000 max on the day, so the support has just been incredible and for this we are extremely grateful,” Leanne said.

Switch cleansers: foaming cleansers can dry the skin with their foaming properties, substitute with an oilbased cleanser. They cleanse the skin without stripping it of its protective acid mantle.

Lentil Walnut Meat – makes 2.5 cups Ingredients 1 1/2 tablespoon EVOO 1/2 red onion, diced 1 3/4 cups lentils, cooked 1 cup walnuts, toasted 1 1/2 teaspoons oregano, dried or fresh 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cumin 1 1/2 teaspoons ground coriander 1 fresh red chili, chopped 1/2 teaspoon sea salt 1/2 teaspoon black pepper 2 tablespoons water Salsa 1 red capsicum 1 lime, juiced 1 green shallot, diced 1 large tomato, diced 1/2 cup fresh coriander, chopped 1/2 firm avocado, diced 1 teaspoon chili, chopped Pinch of sugar Salt and pepper to taste Cashew sour cream

Lettuce wraps, large iceberg or Cos leaves Method: 1. To prepare the taco meat, saute the onion with the evoo and set aside. Add lentils and walnuts into a food processor and pulse until chopped (make sure to leave texture). Pulse in the oregano, cumin, coriander, chilli, and salt. Stir in the sauteed onion and water until combined.

Warm through on the stove.

2. Combine all the salsa ingredients and wash and dry your lettuce leaves.

3. To assemble the tacos, place a large lettuce leaf onto a plate, top with taco meat, salsa and cashew sour cream.

You can buy cashew sour cream at good organic markets like Belmondos or make it yourself if you’re feeling adventurous.

Best steak, steeped in history SINCE 1920 the building that houses Maisie’s Seafood and Steakhouse has stood proudly on Gympie Terrace facing the famous Noosa River.

The iconic building holds years of history for the people of Noosa, with Jiddy Massoud being the first owner of the building that housed the Massoud family’s district cafe.

The black and white photos that line the walls of the family restaurant depict a time when life was more simple; a golden era for Noosa when fishermen would share their catch and only a handful of homes lined the river.

Local stories include tales of Maisie’s pianola being rolled out to Gympie Terrace, which was a dirt road at the time, to be played for the enjoyment of the WWII troops who would deliver supplies to the restaurant when times were tough.

The troops, who used Noosa River as a training ground, would drive their amphibious crafts right up to the restaurant and dine at the Massoud family cafe.

Now owned by Ziggy and Julie Fiegl, none of the historical elements of Maisie’s have been lost from the original decor to the good oldfashioned meals on offer; a meal at Maisie’s is a chance to step back in time and see the history of Noosa.

With the coming winter season, Maisie’s will remain the locals’ favourite with affordable meal options such as the crab and greenlip mussel tagliatelle with sea urchin butter and apple and sultana strudel with custard and icecream for only $29.50. Pies and winter desserts are also coming to the menu soon so keep an eye out for the new specials at Maisie’s or like their Facebook page to keep up to date, simply search for Maisie’s Seafood and Steakhouse.

Both teams were able to cross the line multiple times.

Tackling technique (low and hard) was great to see.

Joe Tolano and Zeke McKenzie were both stand outs in attack even running straight at the biggest Bribie boys on the field.

Lachlan got to stretch his legs with some length of the field runs only to be caught within metres of the line.

Thanks to Glen for running the boys, they all thoroughly enjoyed the game.

Under 9 Blue Under 9 Blue travelled down to Bribie Island for a great, sunny Saturday of footy.

The team was outstanding today with all the boys showing that everything they learn at training can pay off, their defence was excellent but their attacking game was on fire, with the boys spreading out well.

Encouragement award goes to Jett Cannon and man of the match goes to Cody Reid.

Under 10 Blue U10 Blues had one of their better games against Bribie Island.

The kids' attitude in defence was fantastic.

Even after a couple of tries scored against them in the first half they did not drop their heads and if anything worked harder in defence.

In the second half Noosa dominated with tries to Jake (2) and Eric (2).

It was the team’s effort that got them into position to score points.

Man of the match went to Jake Townsend who was outstanding in attack and defence.

Under 10 Yellow Down at Bribe Island in windy conditions the first half was one of strong defence from both teams.

Charlie Cook, Riley Coster, Jackson Smith, Kaleb Hart and Jordan alltackled hard and strong. Ryan Fielding-Smith was very active and made some fast breaks.

In the second half the Pirates played some good footy with Jed Bullman and Ryan Fielding-Smith scoring trys. It was also great to watch the dummy half Dylan run in a great try.

Man of the match was Ryan Fielding-Smith.

Under 11 Blue U11 Blue met Palmwoods at home for a try to try match down to the wire.

Palmwoods got an early lead and Noosa Blue came back with asurge in attack in the second half.

Play slowed with multiple injuries and still lacking in defence, Palmwoods took advantage of its early lead to end just ahead.

Kynan was player of the match with some great runs Congratulations on your try and conversion.

Hamish also stoodout with a great game played today.

Under 11 Gold A determined Nambour side took to the field to take on the power of Noosa Gold.

The boys from Noosa only seemed to manage to stay in the game by a few too many errors from their opposition.

Noosa took a more determined attitude with them onto the field in the second half and came away with the win.

The boys need to improve on their defensive and attacking corridors if they want to stay within range of the top 10.

Through all this there was still some good footy.

A massive welcome back to Dunny Breath from his overseas ballet tournament.

Congratulations on placing third in Australia.

Well done to Ethan Hozier for some rip tacking defence and Romper Stomping attack, earning him the most valuable player.

Under 14 Blue The team played Palmwoods and saw another loss.

It wasn’t all bad, though, because there was one player who played his best game today and got man of the match and that was Ryan Baker.

Pinklets win battle of pink

NOOSA TOUCH FOOTBALL IT was a battle of pink with Pinklets and Pink Thunder first game up in our Under 10 division last week. Pinklets managed to hold on to be in front at the end of the game with Lillian, Makayla and Eden all playing well.

Purple Strikers were too strong for the GSLC girls with Paige, Breanna and Lakota leading their teams around the park. In a tight match, Amigos held on against the fast finishing GSLC boys.

Ben, Charlie and Harry all had great games. Tewantin took the points over Sunshine this time around with Atticus, Broc and Charlie performing strongly.

Sunshine Rippers and Panthers played an entertaining match to open proceedings in the Under 12s.

Both teams put in tremendous team efforts with Panthers just ahead at the final siren. Banana Splits were on fire with unyielding defence in their game against the Tewantin girls.

Monique, Maddie and Abbi all showed great skill. Cooper, Ryan C and Harry had outstanding games in the match-up between Glen’s Guns and Warriors with the Glen’s Guns boys taking the win.

In the U14/16 girls division, NDSHS 9s (green) played strongly and had a win over GSLC (gold). Putting in mighty efforts for their teams were Tiana, Jaidyn and Tahli. NDSHS 7s went

WITH the cool crisp mornings we have been having, the winter species that love that cooler water are really starting to come on.

In the river, trevally have been in good numbers with a raft of different species - smashing poppers and surface walker first thing in the morning, and as the sun gets a little higher in the sky fishing the bottom with soft plastics has paid off big time.

Woods Bay has to be one of the best spots in the river with angler catching from both boat and land based.

The river mouth is also fishing well for trevally with the added bonus of jew, large sea bream, tailor, and a mangrove jack near the rocks.

Further upstream families have been enjoying the Gympie Terrace stretch of the river which has really cleared up over the last couple of weeks and has improved the catch of whiting and bream.

The same goes for upstream with good flathead and school jew taken up towards the first ski run.

With the wind up over the last week, offshore anglers have left their boat on the trailers, but for those that got out early last week

there were some outstanding catches reported.

Starting up on North Reef jewies have been on the chew with a good range of legal fish landed, pillies, squid and soft plastic have all been responsible for captures, mackerel are still around and even this late in the season there are still quality Spanish and spotted around, tuna have also been on the chew with large schools of Mack tuna smashing schools of bait right along the coast, long tail and yellow fin tuna seem to be holding a little lower in the water column, so letting that slug sink a little before retrieving has been paying off.

Halls reef has seen kayak Angler also cleaning up on the tuna.

Down on sunshine Reef bottom bouncers have been rewarded with nice trout, sweetlip, snapper and cobia.

As the wind drops later this week, we should see conditions improve with a trip out wide on the cards, expect to see large snapper big pearl perch and maybe the odd red.

In the fresh water, Lake Macdonald has been a little quieter this week, the afternoons are still fishing better than the mornings.

Creek are worth a look, hopping plastics over the weed. Surface poppers and walk the dog type lures are worth a shot as the sun begins to drop.

Sunshine Rebels proved too strong for NDSHS 8s. Zoe, Lucy and Holly produced first rate games. NDSHS 9s (blue) gave it their all against GSLC (maroon) but GSLC took the win this time around. Lilly-Belle, Abbey and Kirra showed great play.

Only three games in the U14/16 boys division this week due to players being on school camp.

The Illuminatis had a barnstorming win over NDSHS 9s (blue) with Lachie, Hayden and Joe Max being named as team players of the game. Although a gutsy effort was on display by The Magic Touch, GSLC were the winning team with Benson, Jack and James all playing great touch.

Rounding up the afternoon was a battle of the NDSHS 7 and 8s (blue and green). These teams couldn’t be separated at the final whistle and played out a thrilling drawn result. A superb effort by all of the players was shown in this game.

Congratulations to the NDSHS girls teams who recently competed in the annual All Hallows School competition in Brisbane. By all accounts, all three teams played exceptionally well with both U15 teams making the semi finals in their respective divisions and the U13 team playing some great touch for what was their first carnival together.

THE policy of getting our surf clubs more involved in community activities has never been more obvious than during the April May period of this year. The changing face of modern lifesaving has indeed become very interesting.

Way back in the days of old our clubs depended on the good old chook raffle and the occasional social function, plus the house-tohouse door knocks for badly needed funds. None of these functions would have succeeded without the whole hearted support of the community.

So it is good to see that now in this modern era with some lifesaving clubs moving into the world of business, they are in turn offering their help and expertise where applicable.

With the advent of the Supporter Clubs, it really enables the lifesavers to become more a part of the community.

To summarise this, our clubs have in a two-month period been involved in the Anzac Dawn Service at Main Beach, supplied water safety officials for two major sporting events

at Main Beach, continued to take beach safety and surf awareness in all schools from Coolum to Pomona, helped sponsor Mates 4 Mates Disabled Serviceman Program and continued support and promotion of Noosa Seahorse Nippers. Also this month, Noosa hosted Circle of Sound a music event used to promote and help U/17 talent; and again the Surf Club made bursaries available on application to local organisations.

Noosa Surf Club general manager Anton Mogg, who back in his younger days was a highly regarded Melbourne D.J. said, “Helping the young singers is yet another part of our contribution to our community; we are only too happy to work with the families involved.”

When it comes to local support of our projects, many thanks must go to Ian McPharlin of the Outrigger Resort for sponsorship of the Mates 4 Mates people. They made available accommodation for a large group for three nights, thus helping to make the visit of Australian and British veterans a possibility.

Saturday morning the Seahorse Nippers held their final session for this season and some 33 Nippers were in attendance and, under the watchful eye of 42 leaders and helpers, they took part in all activities.

At the completion, all were presented with their medal of participation, T-shirt and certificate. The presentation was carried out by Jordan Mercer and Lachlan Lansdown, who recently returned from Mexico where they won the gold medals in their division of the I.S.A. World Sup and Paddle Board Championships; meeting these two local world champions was a great thrill for the children.

Spaces are limited this year with only 100 entrants accepted into the gruelling mountain climb race that sees competitors climb the almost vertical mountain face of Mount Cooroora.

Event organisers are encouraging people with “an immunity to fear”, strength, agility and a good sense of balance to get in quick and secure their position in this year’s challenge.

The Wimmers King of the Mountain festival is held in Pomona and is an all-day event full of family fun such as the family fun run, tug of war, skate park jam session and live music and food stalls.

This weekend I.R.B.teams from surf lifesaving clubs all along the coast will converge on Noosa’s Main Beach for two days of racing. As previously stated, the winter months are busy times with training and competition, as these crews spend the summer months patrolling our beaches.

The program will get underway at 8am Saturday, and the general public is welcome to come along and enjoy the racing.

Lively tennis all-round THE Vibe of the week goes to the enthusiastic kids at Peregian Beach Tennis Club’s Friday afternoon junior competition. This weekly event offers plenty of match-play opportunities for juniors in both singles and doubles. This iniative gives the kids a chance to play plenty of tennis in a friendly club environment. OVERCAST skies did not dampen the enthusiasm of swimmers from the 21 clubs who participated in the Noosa Masters Swim Club’s annual swim meet, at the Noosa Aquatic Centre on Saturday 16 May. The overall success of the carnival would not have been possible without the efforts of meet director Brian Hoepper, meet manager Ian Tucker, referees Rob Lucas, Derek Coghill and Ray Smythe, chief timekeeper Viv Merrill, chief marshall Ken Benstead, announcer Russell Krause, raffle organisers Sandy Warren and Adele Tucker and all the timekeepers.

They’re a team at Butterflies

By KATIE DE VERTEUIL WHILE not everyone is an AFL star, Noosa Tigers football club believes anyone interested should be given the chance to be part of the team, whether on or off the field. Because of this, the local club has joined forces with Sunshine Butterflies to run two special needs clinics and the great Aussie game, with many who previously would have never had the chance.

Open to all ages and abilities, the clinics will run for 10 weeks and meet every Wednesday for one hour at the Tigers ground on Weyba Road, Noosaville. This new initiative is the brainchild of the club’s Rob Purves, who was part of a similar program in Melbourne. Inspired by the success of the clinics, Rob decided it was something the Noosa club could also launch and is hoping the community will get behind it.

“We already have around 10 players willing to volunteer their time, which is an awesome response,” Rob said.

“The program is really about getting these kids outside and involved in their community.

“There really is a role for everyone in our team, not just on the field but off - whether that be keeping score or putting lids on all the water bottles.

“Everyone likes to feel part of a team, and we ask a lot from the community who are always very supportive of our club. This is a way that we can give something back.”

The clinics will be run similar to Auskick with adaptions made to meet the needs of each participant.

“I can guarantee you that once they start coming, both will keep coming back.”

“Both the kids participating and the players they’ll be paired with will get so much out of the experience,” founder of Sunshine Butterflies Leanne Walsh agreed.

“The kids will change the lives of the players and the players will, in return, change the lives of the kids.”

Swag of karate medals TWENTY-THREE members of Noosa Karate Budokan Club represented their dojo and had fantastic succes at the recent Queensland Karate titles held in Brisbane.

The team were so successful in fact that the small dojo in Noosaville won the overall points tally and was awarded the Best and Fairest Club in the State for 2015.

Our Noosa representatives had a very successful event, taking home seven bronze medals, eight silver and 11 gold.

Karate Budokan World chief instructor Shihan Wayne MacDonald and his wife Sensei Donna Sutor were thrilled with the success of their students from Noosa.

“To have such a high standard of representation at the state titles from one town shows that the effort and quality of training these athletes have been doing is paying dividends,” MacDonald said.

“To win the plaque for the seventh time in 12 years is a wonderful reward to all the athletes over the past 15 years in Noosa who have built a wonderful culture of success, hard work and determination.”

The next step for some of these athletes is to represent Queensland at the National titles in Adelaide in August.

The support at the club for the competitors from all of our members has been fantastic.

Karate Budokan at Noosaville has now over 400 students from four years up to 72 years.

As the sport of karate is not a high profile sport, all of the athletes have to raise their own funds to travel to Championships.

Sport karate is only one small option for karate students; the main benefit of this amazing martial art is the development of self-esteem and focus the students receive. Fitness, discipline and self defence are an integral part of each class at the Dojo, taught by professional martial artists.

Silver and gold for Samantha

NOOSA Athletics hurdler and sprinter Samantha Johnson, 15, has returned home with gold and silver medals in her first international meet at the 2015 Oceania Athletics Championships.

Competing for Australia at the championships in Cairns earlier this month, Samantha won a silver medal in the 100m Hurdles in a time of 14.59 seconds in a tightly contested final, which resulted in an all-Australian podium finish.

She then backed this up with a gold medal run as part of the U18 Girls 4 x 100m Relay. Fellow Queenslanders Katie Colebourne, Emily Bass and Hayley Heel rounded out the team that won in a time of 49.15 seconds, setting a new Oceania record.

“Representing Australia in Cairns was such an awesome experience, and I’ve made so many new friends from other countries,” Samantha said.

“I had no expectations going into the championships and to come away with a gold and silver medal at my first international meet is just amazing,” Samantha said.

Samantha is now back in training for Queensland Schools athletics championships before having a long-earned break prior to the next season of Little Athletics and Noosa Athletics which kicks off again in September.

Imogen at gymnastic helm LOCAL gymnast Imogen Beardsley has recently taken out the Australian title of 2015 Australian Gymnastics Championships.

Imogen a Grade 10 pupil from St Andrews Anglican College has just returned from the 2015 Australian Gymnastics Championships in Melbourne with a collection of medals.

Imogen trains at Sunshine Coast Gymnastics Academy, Woombye, under Russian coach Rimma Lazarus.

Imogen competed with the Queensland WAG Level 10 team that successfully won the Bronze Medal. The gymnasts also compete individually for the Australian Title. The academy was thrilled to have its first Australian title winner when Imogen won 2015 Australian Gymnastics WAG Level 10 15 and Under All Around Champion. This is a fantastic achievement for Imogen and her coach and a result of many hours of training and dedication.

Sunshine Coast Gymnastics Academy also had great result with the Men’s Artistic Gymnastics with Kyle McCartney also competing as a Queensland individual and Brayden Martin, who now trains at the Queensland High Performance Centre, also winning 2015 Australian Gymnastics MAG Level 8 Under 14 All Around Champion.

Overall, a fantastic achievement from a small country club in Queensland with a big national ambition.
