Police promise ‘broken’

By NOEL MURPHY BROKEN election promises to fully re-open police stations at Drysdale, Portarlington and Queenscliff have come under fire from the party that cut their opening hours when in government.

Liberal Member for Western Victoria Simon Ramsay cited rising crime rates and illegal drugs as he slammed Bellarine MP Lisa Neville and Police Minister Wade Noonan for failing to expand the

“She said that the Andrews government would re-open the Portarlington, Queenscliff and Drysdale police stations for 16 hours a day and that this commitment would be fulfilled by March 2015,” Mr Ramsay told parliament.

“The Andrews Government

has yet to deliver on this commitment to the Bellarine community and has in fact given no commitment to increase police resources in the greater Geelong region.

“The Member for Bellarine campaigned on a policy platform of delivering 16-hour serviced police stations at Portarlington, Queenscliff and Drysdale but has failed to deliver even one police

station that is open for longer hours.”

The previous coalition government reduced the stations’ opening hours, manning them with police from Ocean Grove.

Ms Neville accused the coalition of “shutting down the community policing role that is so important to the residents of Drysdale, Queenscliff and Portar-

lington”.

Ms Neville said yesterday she was “gobsmacked they even have the nerve to raise this issue”.

“The only reason we have a policing issue in Bellarine and Geelong is because of the policies and actions of the previous government. We will implement our election commitment.

GEELONG’S Greek Orthodox Church is staging a reunion this weekend as it seeks to shore up declining numbers and apply some TLC to its ageing Bell Park home.

The fundraiser reunion, for Geelong’s Greeks and friends, will take the shape of a cocktail soiree at the Taliska Ave church hall from 6.30pm Saturday.

“It’s open to Greeks and all the friends of Greeks, often people who we’ve grown up with,” said George Katos, president of Geelong Greek Community.

“I was born and bred in Geelong and grew up with a lot of Greek and Italian Australians. We’re getting together to raise money with a $30 entry donation.

“The church has been there since the late 1950s.

Members-wise, we’ve got about 250 people at the moment but there’s a lot more Greeks in Geelong than members but they’ve dropped off.”

Mr Katos said the church was overdue for maintenance and running repairs, which the reunion would hopefully address.

The entertainment would be DJs George and Steve Toppa, with tickets at the door, Mr Katos said.

FEDERAL Labor leader Bill Shorten must have been delighted when a local radio reporter served up a classic Dorothy Dixer during his Geelong visit on Monday.

Dorothy Dixers, as political tragics would know, are set-up questions that backbenchers ask of ministers in the same party so they can prattle on in parliament to their mutual advantage.

Our snout’s Dixer began with a preamble about federal Liberal MP Sarah Henderson campaigning on the East West Link project, which state Labor has abandoned.

“I was just wondering your thoughts on the sitting federal politician spending so much time on state issues,” the reporter helpfully enquired.

Mr Shorten, who knows a chance to kick a Liberal head when he’s served one, happily gave the longest answer of the interview.

LUCKILY, for the Labor leader at least, the reporter had a chance to ask one other question.

Here was a shot at professional redemption; to put on the spot a man aspiring to lead this

great nation.

So was the question about his falling support in opinion polls the same day? Was it about his jobs plan for Geelong?

Not on your nelly.

“If people want to talk to you today what areas of Geelong are you going to be in around what times?”

A free kick and a free ad in the same four-minute interview - they should have thrown in a set of steak knives as well.

A STORY on the Indy’s website has exposed the depth of local appreciation for Geelong Botanic Gardens in unfortunate circumstances.

The report detailed overnight vandalism that damaged $40,000 worth of outdoor artworks and plants, including the gardens’ renowned collection of succulents.

Indy Facebook followers were united in their condemnation, posting comments with adjectives like “senseless“, “disgraceful“, “upsetting“ and “horrible“.

But Paula Stiles preferred a proactive response.

“I know where I’d like to shove those cacti...”, she posted Hear, hear, Paula - and ouch!

AFTER tearing up East West Link contracts on the basis the project offered inadequate return on investment, the Andrews Government must have a different metric to Simonds Stadium.

The home of the Cats again failed to reach its seating capacity on Sunday, with fewer than 24,000 patrons at the Freo match despite room for 33,500.

The stadium’s never come within cooee of filling since the completion of three upgrade stages, costing around $130 million.

But now the Government’s spending another $70 million on 2500 more seats. Given the stadium can’t fill its existing capacity, the return on investment would be zero cents in the dollar.

East West Link? Forty-five cents in the dollar.

City safer than it looks

By NOEL MURPHY GEELONG is a much safer place to live than media reports might suggest, according to the region’s new top cop.

Social media platforms also contributed to a distorted perceptions of crime levels in Geelong, said new local area commander Inspector Graham Banks.

Official statistics back his claim, showing Geelong has a lower crime rate than other Victorian regional cities.

“Regional cities get a big increase in actual crime but you’re more likely to be a victim of crime in other places than Geelong,” Insp Banks told the Independent.

“It’s a lot safer place than sometimes the modern media suggests. You see one fight on Facebook and, yes, it seems to almost go global.

“It gives a false perception of being dangerous when it’s actually a safe

However, criminal offences across Geelong increased almost 30 per cent

in the past four years. Greater Geelong’s crime rate last year was up 10 per cent on 2013, while Surf Coast’s increased 16.5 per cent.

Family incidents in Geelong increased from 1351 in 2010 to 2841 last year. Vehicle thefts numbered 799 last year, 649 in 2013 and 559 in 2010.

Central Geelong recorded the most offences, up from 3597 to 3919, but Whittington and Corio had the largest percentage increases. Whittington jumped 50 per cent from 1314 to 1980 and Corio was up almost 35 per cent from 2927 to 3941.

Insp Banks rejected claims that Geelong police were under-resourced.

The level of police unit responses had improved with increased staffing in Geelong, he said.

“Geelong has been the beneficiary of that and we’ve got better at identifying where a van should be and when.

A lot of work has gone into that space.”

Insp Banks identified the drug ice

and family violence as key challenges for Geelong police.

“With family violence there’s a greater willingness to report and for other people to engage when they see something – people know neighbours will call police.

“Geelong has one of the best family violence practices to ensure recidivists are appropriately managed and a lot of its practices have been adopted statewide.”

Insp Banks said Geelong’s longrunning central city woes required short and long-term strategies.

“It’s a community, not just a matter of a policing presence.

“There’s an environmental design that needs to be considered to make it attractive. When there’s a crowd it’s safe but when there’s only a dozen people a person acting unsavoury makes it hard to visit.

“When hundreds or thousands are there it’s much safer.”

The Tigers announced yesterday that their home ground was “not in a satisfactory state”, forcing the game to Simonds Stadium.

Secret spending GEELONG residents are twice as likely to spend any lottery winnings on shopping sprees compared to their Melbourne counterparts, according to a new survey.

But the Pure Profile research for White Pages found that 67 per cent would keep the spending secret, even from spouses.

Events’ $10m NINE major events produced a $10 million windfall for Geelong in the last half of 2014, according to a council report.

The report said the events attracted 96,000 patrons, creating an equivalent 78 full-time jobs.

Rumble in the hangar as Avalon hosts new TV show

By NOEL MURPHY AVALON Airport will feature contestants from The Block and House Rules in the Nine Network’s upcoming Reno Rumble series.

The new reality-style building show, which Nine hopes will draw a massive TV audience, has been filming in a specially-fitted hangar space at Avalon.

Eight teams from The Block and House Rules will face off against each other in the widely-anticipated new program, which Nine has drummed up as Australia’s “biggest head-to-head knockout competition”.

Host of The Block, Scott Cam, will oversee the clashes, featuring the champions of his show and excontestants from House Rules.

The show will pit two teams transforming a pair of houses each week, promising big clashes for fans of Australian reality TV. Ann McGuinness, the producer of Reno Rumble, said the Avalon shooting was tough but enjoyable.

“It was a lot of fun, yeah,” she told the Independent.

“It was full-on but it was great.”

Avalon’s role, providing hangar space vacated with the loss of major Qantas aircraft maintenance operations, underscores a growing film and TV industry in the region.

MPs’ link fury GEELONG commuters face ongoing traffic nightmares from the Andrews Government’s “$420 million payout deal” to scrap East West Link, according to Liberal MP Simon Ramsay.

The Member for Western Victoria told parliament Labor’s arrangement with the consortium that had planned to build the project marked a “shameful day for Victoria”.

“This is also a sad day for Geelong commuters and it is a disgrace that the Andrews Government would deny 3700 new jobs to Victorians for one of Australia’s largest road projects, with funding of $3 billion already

committed by the Federal Government.”

Mr Ramsay said commuters would now “only look forward to more congestion and longer delays” crossing the Westgate Bridge as traffic increased two per cent a year.

Federal Liberal counterpart Sarah Henderson labelled the the Labor State Government a “wrecking ball” that had betrayed Victorians.

Local Labor MPs hit back, with Member for Lara John Eren saying the “dud project would have cost Victorians $10.7 billion had we not intervened”.

“The former Liberal govern-

ment’s acts of secret treachery on the eve of an election padlocked Victoria to a number of options none of them good.”

“We have our own plans… like the Westgate Distributor, which will ease congestion for Melbourne-bound Geelong commuters.”

Labor Member for Bellarine Lisa Neville denied Labor had paid any “compensation” to the consortium.

“The only money paid to them was $339 million…by the former Government on the eve of the last election. Unfortunately, the previous Government paid it over and it is not able to be clawed back.”

1000 jobs coming, says mayor

By NOEL MURPHY PURCHASE or lease interest in industrial land north of Geelong could lead to a billion dollars in investment and 1000 jobs, according to Mayor Darryn Lyons.

Potential investors have eyed off more than 100 hectares of land worth $40 million in the Geelong Ringroad Employment Precinct (GREP) in the past 12 to 18 months, he told the Independent.

Other private developments

Firms on track to invest $1b north of Geelong within the precinct would lead to even greater investment and jobs, Cr Lyons said.

City of Greater Geelong finished the first stage 25 McManus Rd last year, with a steel manufacturing company and a waste processing plant - AusNovus under development after investing in the precinct.

The completion of Production Way this month allowed Accensi to invest $25 million in two large

factories on a five-hectare site it bought from City Hall.

“As well as construction of Broderick Rd and Production Way at a cost of $3 million, council has constructed the Elcho sewer pumping station along Production Way, which will service 250 hectares of industrial land at the GREP and facilitate even further development,” Cr Lyons said.

Production Way will extend further in 2015 to enable the

relocation and expansion of the Rocke Brothers transport and logistics company from Lara, which the Independent revealed last month.

The City is building Success Crt off O’Briens Road and has sold land off the plan for a concrete manufacturer and an environmental services company.

The development would also create several new serviced lots of land that were already generat-

ing interest, Cr Lyons said.

The City built O’Briens Rd and associated drainage facilities in 2011, enabling major development such as a Ritchie Brothers auction site.

“Several lots along O’Briens Rd are currently being developed, including a CFA service department, Plumbtec and Brad Drew Trucks and the road is a scene of intense construction activity,” Cr Lyons said.

Five years ago council bought 63 hectares north of Production Way for a drainage basin to service the ring road industrial estate. The basin also protected the downstream Grand Lakes estate and Lara township from flooding as well as RAMSAR wetlands at Limeburners Lagoon.

“Not all the lot was required and council has negotiated a lease of the remaining land for a major agribusiness leading to the creation of about 100 jobs and $100 million of investment,” Cr Lyons said.

Vinyl recordings back in fashion as what goes around comes around

By NOEL MURPHY SHELLAC and vinyl have housed the groove of popular music since Edison’s day but a respite over the past two decades made it look like the 12-inch long-playing disc was consigned to history.

Not so - LPs are back with a will.

And not just the dated ’60s, ’70s and ’80s rock classics gleaned from parents’ collections or snaffled from second-hand bins and garage sales.

The world’s most popular recording stars are now issuing vinyl LPs, with CDs and MP3 downloads thrown in for good measure - contemporary artists like Alana Del Ray and Jack White alongside re-mastered works by older artists like Pink Floyd and David Bowie.

LPs are in demand again for several reasons, according to Matt Penney, former frontman of punk outfit Heads Kicked Off and proprietor of Geelong CBD record outlet Real Music .

“Mainly it’s for better sound

clarity and definition that you don’t get on digital - and better tactile experience,” he said.

“Vinyls are heavier now, 180 grams and typically twice as thick, allowing deeper grooves to retrieve more and a higher quality sound.

“There’s so much more for your money - you feel like you’re getting a real product.”

With the resurgence of vinyl records has come a matching interest in stereo systems - turntables, amplifiers and speakers, often custom-made jobs.

“The whole hi-fi thing is coming back,“ Mr Penney said.

“I often help people find hi-fi systems, too. I also make various bits and pieces.”

Ironically, for a generation of young people LPs aren’t a nostalgia trip, they’re solid state-of-theart.

“Kids who were only being born when CDs were replacing records are finding the whole thing new and exciting,“ Mr Penney said.

Journeyman’s riding Australia

By NOEL MURPHY SOME people just like testing themselves, testing their limits, riding the envelope – endurance junkie Ben Henzgen for one.

The Manifold Heights fitness guru loves being out of the comfort zone.

Oddly, he’s out of it so often it’s almost become his comfort zone.

Right now he’s exposing himself to sleeping rough, often wet, on park benches and concrete floors as he rides up Australia’s east coast on his bid to set a record for riding around the country on a mountain bike.

Mr Henzgen set out Tuesday last week, aiming to ride 300km a day to circumnavitage the continent in 45 days.

Coffs Harbour and powering north to Queensland. On Thursday night he reached Brisbane. The weather has been warming into the 30s, he’s collided with a car, crashed his bike several times, ridden non-stop through 12 hours of rain and sustained various mechanical failures.

A typical journal entry is enlightening: “Stayed on the back patio of Narooma Tennis Club last night after 209km with 3625m elevation gain and many steep hills.

Mr Henzgen’s no stranger to rough rides. He returned late last year from the US where he rode 57,756km in several treks across the country.

He crossed the Rockies several times, the Mojave Desert in 44C and Minnesota in the mid-40s with a heat factor in the 50s while en route to California via Texas.

Henzgen is a jazz musician, a bass player, with an applied science degree in firefighting and a spirit of adventure that’s hard to match.

He travelled to the US four years ago, earning his degree on a music scholarship, writing off a cousin’s car, becoming a college athlete, gathering 23 tattoos, working as a fisherman in Alaska and waking in hospital with his jaw wired shut after a big night out.

Uni’s ‘landmark’ health data deal GEELONG'S Deakin University has signed a deal with Max Healthcare for a ground-breaking project to cross-reference patient records to help medical decisions.

The project’s upshot is critically important from economic, patient safety and systems perspectives, according to Deakin.

The first part of the project will focus on heart disease, specifically patients with symptoms of acute myocardial infarction or stroke. “The primary objective of the project will be to search through the existing data sets for hidden patterns of both the predictable and preventable events in managing the health care of individuals,� said Professor Svetha Venkatesh, director of Deakin’s Pattern Recognition and Data Analytics. “Both Deakin and Max Healthcare will bring socalled 'big data’ to work for medicine with its huge records of patient history - with data on admissions, diagnosis and outcomes, spanning a huge inventory of images, computerised records and registries and the consequent untapped potential to identify critical safety issues, as well as service and clinical efficiencies.�

The project would use the data to develop a model for predicting health issues.

Max Healthcare will pilot the model on prospective cases over a period of one year, sharing the results with the Deakin team.

Max Healthcare’s Dr Sandeep Budhiraja said the “landmark� project would take health care management “to a different level�.

"We look forward to working with Deakin in order to advance research on data analytics for health data.�

Dual death mystery continues

By NOEL MURPHY POLICE are remaining tight-lipped about the mysterious violent deaths of two men at Whittington almost three weeks ago.

The bloodied bodies of Dylan Kitt, 30, and his male housemate, 23, were found in a back bedroom of the Thatcher Crt home by Mr Kitt’s mother, who also

lived in the house.

Police suspected an axe or tomahawk of causing their injuries but were unable to located a weapon. Police were reported to have ruled out the involvement of a third party.

Geelong CIU is preparing a report for the Coroner but releasing no details about the incident, which police at the scene described as “horrendous�.

Mr Kitt has since had a funeral and a private cremation.

Police said the second man’s funeral had yet to be held. “We’re not releasing anything at this stage,“ Detective Leading Senior Constable Naomi Bourke told the Independent yesterday. “No preliminary reports have been finished but we’re satisfied there was not

ONE of the region’s greatest war heroes will be honoured on special stamps for Anzac Day, Australia Post has announced.

Australia Post's Michael Szolt said the series of five stamps celebrating the Anzac centenary would be a “real honour” for Albert Jacka.

Born on a farm near Winchelsea in 1893, Mr Jacka won Australia’s first Victoria Cross in World War I. Mr Jacka earned the commonwealth’s highest award for bravery after recapturing a strategically important trench from seven Turkish soldiers, killing five and wounding two.

He died in Melbourne in 1932.

Ebola incident ‘drill’, says MP

By NOEL MURPHY A SUSPECTED Ebola case transported by ambulance to Geelong Hospital last month was a drill, according to Bellarine MP and former Barwon Health chair Lisa Neville.

But Ambulance Employees of Australia has told the Independent it knew nothing of the incident, while a health care professional who photographed the transfer and showed the images to the Independent insisted the incident was not a drill.

“This was only a practice scenario to ensure preparedness - no actual or possible case of Ebola in Geelong,” Ms Neville said.

“I give you 100 per cent guarantee it was a practice run. A practice means some people involved have to believe it’s real.”

The man, recently returned from a cruise-ship tour that took

Ambulance crews took biohazard precautions when transferring the patient to hospital.

The private photographs presented to the Independent showed health staff in head-to-toe protective gear wheeling a passenger on a gurney into emergency.

The witness said ambulance officers had adopted biohazard precautions because they were concerned they might have been “at potential risk”, given the patient’s recent travel itinerary.

Barwon Health criticised the 3 April report on social media, saying it “could be misconstrued and create panic in our community unnecessarily”. The Barwon Health comments made no mention of any drill or practice run.

“The course will run over eight evening sessions with students learning animation techniques working under a fixed, industrystandard digital camera,” he said.

ONE of Australia’s most memorable advertising campaigns was also a hit for Torquay’s Glen Hunwick.

The 54-year-old “claymation” expert created all the quirky characters for chocolate manufacturer Cadbury’s ‘Wouldn’t it be Nice’ campaign.

“We worked around the clock for three months to create the ads and they’ve certainly become recognisable,” the stop-motion animation artist recalled.

Originally from New Zealand, Mr Hunwick grew up in Melbourne but moved to the Surf Coast with his young family 11 years ago.

“It was for the surfing,” he admitted, “and, yeah, the lifestyle, too”.

Mr Hunwick’s career in animation began accidently more than 25 years ago when he enrolled in an illustration course at Melbourne’s Swinburne University.

“I loved drawing and I thought it was a great way to tell a story.

“I walked into an animation class by mistake and from then on I was hooked.”

Mr Hunwick bought a big bag of plasticine and began making characters to animate them.

He quickly learnt how to make his characters tell their tales.

“I’d take a still frame of the plasticine character then move it, take another still and so on – put them all together and the character comes to life.”

Mr Hunwick said movies like Chicken Run and Wallace and Gromitt popularised claymation.

Pair in postie ride on violence

ITâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S BEEN a long time since posties rode their distinctive red bikes â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the non-motorised kind, at least â&#x20AC;&#x201C; but two Geelong men will bring them back for a special ride.

Ben Sutherland and Phil Hunter arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t posties, either, but have chosen the lumbering machines for their epic journey to Sydney in a bid for heightened awareness and of family violence.

Ben and Phil, who both work for the Department of Justice and Regulation, will depart on the 1200kilometre trek on 29 April.

Wisely, the pair will have a support crew along just in case the postie bikes decide to take an unscheduled break.

Inspired by a story of a man who rode from Sydney to England, Mr Sutherland said the use of the postie bikes would add â&#x20AC;&#x153;a real sense of achievementâ&#x20AC;?.

The pair are collecting donations and raising funds for Minerva Community Services, a Geelong organisation providing vital support to women and children experiencing or escaping family violence. All proceeds will go toward funding an education program to prevent family violence at an early stage through the promotion of healthy relationships among young people. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This ride is important to both of us and weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re very proud to support an organisation that can help reduce the instances of domestic violence in relationships from an early age,â&#x20AC;? Mr

Hunter said.

Minerva chief Pauline Wright said the ride was an excellent opportunity to raise community awareness of issues contributing to family violence. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Family violence is very much prevalent in our society and we want people to know that help is available,â&#x20AC;? Ms Wright said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Minerva is dedicated to offering support to women and children experiencing family violence, ranging from court support to access to highsecurity refuge accommodation.â&#x20AC;?

Heritage made history A PRECEDENT was set for heritage areas in Geelong when a 1937 art-deco house on the corner of The Esplanade and Bell Pde was allowed to be demolished and replaced with a huge, ultra-modern, box-style, three-storey house totally out of character with all other houses in Drumcondra. Why have heritage overlays on property and subject owners to stringent conditions when renovating but then allow such a property to be demolished?

The term ‘heritage overlay’ needs to be redefined to more-accurately convey just exactly what it does or does not pretend to mean.

Mayor must lead rebellion against Melbourne THE ISSUE of Melbourne businesses butting in on Geelong and district's commercial opportunities (Double Talk April 10th) is nothing new.

During the gold rush the merchants of Melbourne were afraid Geelong would become the capital of Victoria, so they issued a fake map here and overseas, showing that Melbourne was nearer to Ballarat than Geelong. They entreated prospectors not to disembark at Geelong or to purchase their supplies here.

One hundred years ago the Eureka Stockade battle was in Ballarat. Perhaps Geelong's colourful mayor, Darryn Lyons, should lead another re-

bellion to gain the rights and independence Geelong has earned to stand alone as Victoria’s second city.

Vaccine threat unlawful ANY GOVERNMENT attempt to force parents to vaccinate their children with threats of withdrawing child benefit payments or any other payments is unlawful and unconstitutional.

Federal Government has a constitutional mandate for “the provision of maternity allowances, widows' pensions, child endowment, unemployment, pharmaceutical, sickness and hospital benefits, medical and dental services (but not so as to authorize any form of civil conscription), benefits to students and family allowances".

Civil conscription means nothing can be compulsory, especially via forced medication. Opposition politicians, like Corio MP Richard Marles, should point out this constitutional fact to the Coalition Government.

Concerned and informed mothers not wishing to vaccinate their children are correct in their concerns related to vaccines. A wealth of evidence shows that many vaccines do not work and that they are also suspected of causing autism.

Furthermore, vaccines have been found to contain toxic ingredients that were not meant to be included.

Can’t eat theory GAVIN Brown’s spirited if not insipid defence of global warming theory (Letters, 10 April) did nothing to prove his case.

Despite his assertion, there has been no warming over the past 18 years. This has been confirmed even by the Royal Society in England and the former head of the International Panel on Climate Change, Dr Rajendra Pachauri.

As for Mr Brown’s other furphies about heat stored in the oceans, hasn’t he heard of Henry’s Law? Enough said.

I’m convinced the jihad to save the planet from global warming is an unnecessary digression from the major issues confronting humanity, such as hunger, poverty, homelessness, disease and terrorism.

The world has 905 million undernourished people and needs $14 billion to feed them but has already spent over $1 trillion on global warming.

Environmentalism is anti-people. Are we guilty of ignoring real people with real problems to focus on an issue based mainly on speculation and which poses no direct threat?

Melikov trained as a ballet dancer in his childhood, performing leading roles in company productions.

A graduate of Moscow Art University, he instigated many works of monumental and decorative art in Moscow and other cities, including Russia’s Palace of Culture.

Melikov hoped his ballet company would continue touring after visiting Australia.

“There is a great love of Australian audiences for the Russian ballet and we’re happy to have the opportunity to bring it to Australia.”

Moscow Ballet La Classique will perform Sleeping Beauty at Geelong Performing Arts Centre’s Playhouse theatre on 11 May.

SISTER ACT: The McClymont sisters play Corio's Gateway Hotel this weekend.

Sisters forever country lovers DESPITE the high level of recording technology available these days, country music fans love nothing more than turning up to a concert to hear their favourite tunes live.

“People want to see you,” agreed Sam McClymont, a third of the famed sister trio now on a second national tour supporting award-winning album Here’s To You and I. “You feel more connected to the artist; you get to hear the stories, you know their personality a bit better.” The McClymonts have little trouble attracting hordes of fans to their shows – their Forever Begins Tonight tour recently began with a sell-out show in Dubbo.

“We’re getting to places we missed on the first tour,” McClymont explained.

The new album has so far

garnered an ARIA Award nomination for Country Album of the Year and earned two Golden Guitar Awards for most sales and best group or duo.

The sisters wrote the latest single from the album, Forever Begins Tonight, with acclaimed writer/producer Lindsay Rimes to celebrate Sam McClymonts’ wedding.

The tune was now well on its way to becoming the go-to wedding song for 2015, McClymont said.

“We’ve been contacted by fans telling us they’re using it for their first wedding dance.

“It feels great to have a song so personal to us connecting with other people.”

McClymont believed that country music was still growing in Australia as the boundaries between genres blurred.

“People aren’t generalising

or stereotyping music anymore – they just want to hear good music,” McClymont pointed out.

“When we’re touring and ask how many people are in the audience for the first time we get a big show of hands.

“More people are listening in addition to our loyal and dedicated country music fans.”

McClymont said the sisters were happy doing their part in growing country music’s fan base by introducing new acts like support Mickey Pye, a 2015 Toyota Star Maker winner.

“We had him support us in Sydney and it’s great to see new talent emerging.

“Mickey is a singer/guitarist and country music is in good hands with support acts like him developing their own fan base.”

The McClymonts play Corio’s Gateway Hotel tomorrow night.

‘World leaders’ set for Celtic festival SOME of the world’s leading Celtic musicians, artists and thespians will feature at Portarlington’s annual National Celtic Festival this year, organisers have announced.

They released this week a first list of performers, featuring Irish singer/songwriter Brian Kennedy, Scottish folk ensemble Cherry Grove and harp duo The Duplets.

“This year the festival has attracted many of the highest quality Celtic acts from across Australia and overseas,” the organisers said.

Domestic acts announced on the bill for the three-day festival included A Rose and Thorns, The Barleyshakes, Charm of Finches, Melbourne Scottish Fiddlers, Fiona Ross Band and The Moondance The organisers said the music would range from traditional to contemporary, with a “huge variety” of cross-over styles including Celtic rock, punk and jazz.

The festival would also continue its cross-continental cultural partnership with Feis Rois, the leading youth organisation of the Scottish Highlands, while Stephen Kelly, creative director of Ireland’s C21 Theatre, would run

a series of directors’ workshops.

The oganisers said more than 60 acts were lined up to perform at various venues around Portarlington.

The festival will run from 5 to 8 June.

Heat oven to 180, line two baking trays with nonstick baking paper. Place flour, caster sugar, coconut and oats in a bowl and sir to combine, make a well in the centre. Place butter and golden syrup in a saucepan to melt. Dissolve baking soda in boiling water, add melted ingredients and dissolved baking soda to dry ingredients and mix to combine. Roll tbs measure amounts into balls and place onto prepared baking trays, allowing space for biscuits to spread while cooking. Bake for 15 min or until firm and golden brown.

By DEREK OGDEN THE Hyundai i30, already a firm favourite with new-car buyers – it was Australia’s fourth best-selling vehicle for 2014 – has been given the once-over, making the hatchback even more appealing.

The back-to-back winner of the coveted Australia’s Best Cars Best Small Car Under $35,000 Award for the past two years, has had the automotive broom put through it for the Series II models - Active, new ActiveX, SR (replacing Elite), SR Premium and Premium.

Taking cues from its upmarket, Fluidic Sculpture 2.0-designed Sonata and Genesis big brothers, the i30 Series II boasts a deeper, more assertive front grille, while in-cabin updates include the addition in the entry-level Active of a new five-inch touchscreen audio system with benchmark connectivity, including Pandora internet radio, Bluetooth, USB, auxiliary input, iPod and MP3. SR Premium and Premium variants now boast ventilated front seats among a long list of standard equipment, which includes a rear-view camera combined with four-sensor rear-parking assist as standard equipment across the Series II range. Power is offered through the choice of three engines – two petrol, one diesel - and three transmissions.

A seven-speed dual-clutch transmission makes its debut as an option on diesel-powered Active and ActiveX variants and standard on the diesel-only i30 Series II Premium.

The gearbox will be rolled out in future Hyundai products.

However, it is in the running gear that Australia holds a special spot for the i30 Series II because it benefits from extensive suspension and steering development work carried out by Hyundai Motor Company Australia’s respected local tuning team. SR models feature a bespoke sports suspension tune delivering sharp, responsive turn-in and improved handling while retaining the i30’s supple, rounded ride quality, which was tested to its full extent on a media launch drive on some

All scribblers were in safe hands thanks to the Series II retaining the Hyundai i30’s 5-star ANCAP safety rating.

The all-new i30 variant, the ActiveX, is designed to deliver better value and additional premium features over the Active grade on which it is based.

Like the Active, the new ‘X’ is available either with Hyundai’s Nu 1.8-litre MPI petrol engine, with six-speed manual or sixspeed automatic transmission, or U-II 1.6-litre turbo-diesel with either six-speed manual transmission or seven-speed DCT. The oil burner DCT on test, with seamless gearing, produced responsive handling and smooth ride, the only downside being noticeable diesel engine rattle at idle that was overcome by tyre noise on the ragged road surfaces.

The new kid on the block includes sporty, new-design 16inch alloy wheels with machinedface finish and recessed gunmetal-grey inserts, electric folding external mirrors with inbuilt LED side repeaters, black leather trim with premium steering wheel, gear knob, door trims and instrument panel hood.

Hyundai i30 Series II comes in for some serious cosmetic work with Active and ActiveX models sporting a new larger hexagonal front grille incorporating black horizontal slats with satin chrome inserts. SR, SR Premium and Premium variants feature gunmetal grey slats with satin chrome inserts. This trio also now come standard with LED daytime

running lights and LED combination tail-lights, in addition SR variants featuring a matte-black lower diffuser incorporated into the rear bumper.

SR Premium and Premium versions also feature a distinctive chrome belt-line moulding.

Active variants roll on 16-inch steel wheels with a more upmarket-looking wheel cover design.

SR, SR Premium and Premium variants come standard with newdesign gunmetal-grey 17-inch alloys.

Of the two petrol engines, the 1.8-litre MPi puts out 107 kW at 6500 rpm and 175 Nm at 4700 rpm, while the 2.0-litre GDi 124 kW at 6500 rpm and 201 Nm at 4700 rpm, both mated with either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission.

Fuel consumption on the combined urban / highway cycle, hovers around seven litres per 100 kilometres, according to the maker.

All have Euro 5 emission rating.

The 1.6-litre CRDi diesel delivers 100 kW at 4000 rpm and 260 Nm at 1500 to 3500 rpm with six-speed manual and 300 Nm between 1750 and 2500 rpm with the seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Claimed fuel consumption is an impressive 4.6 and 4.9 litres per 100 kilometres respectively.

Prices start at $20,990 for the i30 1.8 MPi petrol Active six-speed manual, the new ActiveX manual is $22,090, while the range is topped off with the 1.6 CRDi Premium seven-speed double clutch transmission at $34,490. Hyundai is offering drive-away prices on selected models in April.

Cats ‘positive’ as Suns shoulder injury woes THE Cats remain positive going into this week’s home-game against Gold Coast Suns on Sunday, according to recruit Rhys Stanley.

“We’re really positive and we will take something from the fact that Sydney lost their first two games last year and ended up in the grand final,” he told the Cats’ website this week.

“When you look at the draw they were two really tough games with quality opponents [Hawthorn and Fremantle]. We’ve just got to get back to what we know and play some really good footy.”

“The time is now to stand up and be counted,” Suns coach Rodney Eadie told a press conference before Wednesday’s training session.

Shoulder surgery last July has left Ablett struggling in the first two rounds of this season. Suns medical staff have warned his shoulder is unlikely to strengthen without rest.

“Ablett would definitely miss this week and possibly more,” club general manager Marcus Ashcroft said.

“We haven’t put a definitive timeline on that - we’ll play it week by week.”

The Cats will also be down a key

player this week as premiership defender Andrew Mackie misses the game with a quad strain.

“He had some quad tightness toward the end of the Fremantle game last week and scans this week have shown there’s a small quad strain, so he’ll go into a short stint of rehab,“ physio Mark Young told Cat’s TV. The club has put forward Lincoln McCarthy on its long-term injury list while he recovers from surgery on his troublesome left foot.

The Cats expect McCarthy to be sidelined for as long as five months.

The 21-year-old has played five AFL games since his debut in 2012.

Club selectors now have the option of upgrading a rookie-listed player to the senior list.

Warriors face Northcote as leaky sides clash in NPL

By JOSIP ZILIC NORTH Geelong Warriors needs a change of fortune when it plays Northcote at John Cain Reserve this Saturday in National Premier League.

Both sides’ leaky defences have conceded 21 goals so far this season.

North Geelong has the better attacking form but Northcote has recorded some good wins and a resilient draw last week against a resurgent Oakleigh.

The Warriors responded to their dismal performance against Port Melbourne the week before with a positive start to proceedings against Avondale last weekend.

Juso Julardzija was in the thick of it early with two chances to test Fraser Siddal but taking the extra touch and failing to unleash early allowed defenders to shut him down.

Nikola Jurkovic and Vito Cichello were first to the ball, which won a lot of the midfield battles, but were forced into long passing as Avondale’s defence minimised their space and time.

LUKE Perry headed up the Barwon River estuary on Sunday to find son Josh a mulloway or an elephant fish.

Arriving at the Thunderbolt section, they dropped anchor near a deep drop-off to catch Australian snapper on soft plastics while awaiting the tide change.

As the tide began running in they set out some squid baits, with Josh’s rod soon buckling over with a 3kg elephant.

St Leonards remained a whiting hot spot over the past week, with anglers moving sometimes as little as 30m to find a school.

Joseph Walsh and his father fished Swan Bay on Saturday, taking a mixed bag of salmon to 1kg and a 40cm silver trevally on Squidgy soft plastics. Joseph then switched to bait for a feed of whiting before drifting with jigs for a catch of reasonably sized squid.

Clifton Springs produced reasonable numbers of squid for anglers drifting over weed beds in 4m to 6m. The calmer days were best.

Whiting were available off the quarries on pippies. Numerous gummy sharks to 10kg were also boated in the same area during the evenings.

Surf angling improved, with gummies and salmon holding in good numbers. Casting 25g metal lures caught salmon to 2kg at Bancoora, while anglers fishing into the dark used the fresh fillets to catch the gummies.

Mulloway has been a welcome by-catch on the beaches and have been a bit larger than the fish from the estuary systems, around 6kg.

Southern Bluefin Tuna continued moved in en masse between Apollo Bay and Port Macdonald, promising the best season yet.

Some trophy fish were taken in the past week but the number of tuna over 60kg was the most impressive feature.

Travis Mercieca trolled the Horseshoe off Portland where three of his reels suddenly started screaming off.

Travis managed to boat TUNING UP: Travis all three tuna, averaging Mercieca with his big tuna.

20kg each.

Travis resumed trolling and soon had a bigger fish on the line. Three hours later he boated a 66.7kg fish, noting the tuna favoured Raplala X-rap 30s.

Also making the trip to Portland was Ben Holloway who ventured all the way to the continental shelf to catch a 20kg tuna. Anglers fishing the shelf reported that the tuna much less finicky and more willing to take larger lures.

Fishing World Geelong’s Reece Pitt spent the weekend down at Nelson on the Victoria-South Australian border. Fishing the Glenelg River from a kayak, Reece caught some good-sized bream and mulloway on soft plastic lures.

Reece said the river mouth had recently broken open to the sea, which made for challenging fishing.

Bill Haywood recently returned from an Easter trip to the Northern Territory. Bill fished the wetland area around Sampan Creek were he boated barramundi to 94cm and huge threadfin salmon on black and gold bomber-style lures.

On the freshwater front, Wurdee Boluc Reservoir continued producing large redfin on lure around sunset along with brown trout to 2.5kg.

Lake Bullen Merri served up Chinook salmon to 1.5kg for anglers trolling deep-diving lures such as Daiwa Double Clutches. Fishing Powerbait from the banks helped anglers land rainbow trout to 1kg.

This weekend anglers should set their sights on elephant fish and mulloway in the Barwon estuary, while anyone with tuna fever should try Port Fairy or Portland.
