THE SEA change blown in by the ABC TV series of the same name has finally reached one of its quaint settings, with the character of St Leonards to transform under a new growth plan.

The township was one of the two main locations for the late-1990s series, with locals happily giving up their main

street on filming days.

But City Hall’s major amendment to St Leonards’ structure plan will change the seaside village’s character as population growth spreads out over the Bellarine Peninsula.

It’s part of the changing character of Geelong’s coastal communities, with Surf Coast Shire approving another major housing development at north Torquay

A independent panel reviewing the St Leonards plan accepted that the character of the town would change as it grew and activity increased.

The panel’s report said new subdivisions and contemporary housing contrast the existing character of the long-established seaside town.

The new plan gives approval for the development of two residential housing estates.

The sea change swamped the other local setting for the ABC show years ago, with Barwon Heads’ property prices mirroring the population boom.

Regional councils alliance body G21 identified the new St Leonards growth area in 2013 as part of an overall plan to cope

with the region’s population rising from 228,000 to 298,000 by 2031.

Phil Walters of the St Leonards Progress Association’s said residents were reluctantly accepting the changes to their town. “I’m sorry to see it happen,“ Mr Walters said.

VANUATU’S cyclone disaster has blown a particularly chill wind through the hearts of students and staff at one of Geelong’s top schools.

That’s because Geelong College has been sending year 10 kids to Vanuatu for the past seven years to work with the community on Tanna island.

Principal Andrew Barr said his school’s links with the island’s Lenekal College, now destroyed, go back further but at least it’s students and staff were safe.

The college has now set up a Tanna Reconnect Appeal, taking donations at the college’s website.

LOCAL surfing legend Maurice Cole might be in his golden years but still gets his fair share of waves - and then some - at his beloved Bells Beach.

However, Maurice was upstaged on home surf this week when he paddled out to find a little extra competition for the best sets. As seen in the picture above, he could only look on as 20-year-old reigning world champion Gabriel Medina tore up the waves.

And to turn up the heat on our man Maurice, that’s top women’s competitor Lakey Peterson diving through the wave just in front of Medina.

At least, as reported on today’s page seven, Maurice can still claim priority over local parking inspectors!

Mr Walters said he recently returned from holidays with his wife to see new flashing pedestrian crossing lights.

“When we saw it we said, ‘Oh my God, here we go’. We’ve gone from a seaside town to become seaside suburb of Geelong.”

Mr Walters said the progress association now focussed on retaining the town’s sense of community.

“We try to focus on community values.“ Mr Walters stressed that infrastructure provision had to match the growth of the town.

“The planners need to make sure that things like the Drysdale bypass are supported to make it easier to get through Drysdale.”

A City Hall spokesperson said the property, about 10km north of Lara, had a planning permit and work authority for sand quarrying on approximately five hecatres.

But council received a planning permit application in February for sand quarrying on an additional 90 hectares, the spokesperson said.

The Department of State Development, Business and Innovation had endorsed a draft work plan for the expansion.

“Council has requested further information from the application to enable assessment. The nearest dwelling is approximately 1.2km away,“ the City spokesperson said.

Charges could push up cost of blocks

NBN $1900 block sting

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN LAND buyers throughout Geelong face extra costs of up to $1900 a lot under a new National Broadband Network (NBN) greenfields rollout plan.

Federal Govenment has yet to finalise the plan but NBN new developments manager Julian Nachmias has written to developers warning of the impending charges.

The “network deployment” charges will cost an extra $400 per multi-dwelling unit and $600 for single-dwelling units for all new developments approved by NBN Co after 1 March.

Developers are also fighting a proposed “backhaul” fee to connect their estates to the NBN, which could add

more than $1000 per lot in additional connection expenses.

Most sales of new lots in the region already include an NBN charge of around $800 to connect fibre to the home.

Geelong has thousands of lots for sale in estates including Armstrong Creek, Curlewis, North Geelong, Highton, Marshall, Oakdene, Portarlington, Leopold and Drysdale.

More estates are planned for Lara, Lovely Banks and on the Bellarine Peninsula to cope with an expected 70,000 new residents by 2031.

Mr Nachmias told developers the NBN was “beginning to operationalise some of the key policy changes related to cost recovery”.

“The government is introducing infrastructure charging to promote fairer and more effective competition, thereby creating greater efficiency, innovation and choice in the provision of telecommunications infrastructure in new developments in the long term.”

Urban Development Institute of Australia Victorian executive director Danni Addison said strong lobbying had succeeded in convincing the Government to delay parts of the new plan.

Ms Addison said developers’ backhaul contribution had been delayed to 1 July.

The backhaul cost would be up to 50 per cent of the first $1000 per lot and 100 per cent of costs in excess of $1000 per lot where NBN Co does not have a backhaul connection and must

lay a new cable.

Implementation of a $300 end-user charge for new connections has also been delayed to 1 July.

“The new backhaul charges were originally due to take effect from 1 March and their delay is a major win for the development industry, allowing developers time to prepare,” Ms Addison said.

She said lobbying had also won concessions for developers, requiring NBN Co to provide early planning information, indicative costs and reduce backhaul costs through co-development with other utilities.

“UDIA continues to oppose the introduction of the charges and will continue to lobby the Federal Government on these issues.”

Police ‘close in’ on man’s killer

POLICE expect to make further arrests over the alleged kidnapping and murder of a Leopold man whose body remains missing.

Police have so far charged two men with false imprisonment and kidnapping connected to the disappearance of Paul Kingsbury, 27.

Mr Kingsbury was last seen in Larkins Lane, Moolap, in the early

hours of 6 July last year.

Detectives have yet to lay murder charges but are convinced Mr Kingsbury is dead.

Homicide investigators believe that Mr Kingsbury was murdered on the day he was kidnapped.

“We’ll be making further arrests,” Detective Senior Sergeant Boris Buick told the Independent.

“We need a critical piece of evi-

dence to lay further charges.

“The investigation is very much ongoing…we’re still knocking on doors.

“We've spoken to a number of people in Geelong and will continue to do so.’’

Mr Kingsbury was known to police as an amphetamine user who had been convicted for bashing two taxi drivers.

Det Sen Sgt Buick, of the Missing Persons Squad, said plenty of speculation surrounded Mr Kingsbury’s murder, with the rumour mill running at top speed.

“There are people that we have arrested and spoken to and cut loose - people are not forthcoming,” he said.

Dad’s brain cancer prompts son’s fitness fundraiser ‘Big city’ ranking

By PAUL MILLAR hurts Little River THE DEVASTATING news of his father’s aggressive brain cancer has prompted a Geelong fitness instructor to launch a fundraising campaign.

Tom Boyle said his dad, Damian, was diagnosed with the cancer after suffering a seizure while teaching students at Belmont High School.

He is now undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatment.

Tom said he felt he had to do something positive, so he aimed to raise funds for Make a Wish Foundation and brain cancer research.

“I just want to give back as much as I can as his son,” Tom said.

The well-being instructor will run a six-week fitness challenge costing $60 a head, with all proceeds split evenly between the foundation and brain cancer research.

“It’s a chance for people to get fit while giving something back,” he said.

The six-week course is due to start on 28 April.

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A CLASSIFICATION as a major city could cost Little River families because of a cut to federal funding for child care.

Labor Member for Lalor Joanne Ryan told federal parliament this week that the 100-student Little River Primary School was at risk because of the cut.

Little River falls into the federal electorate of Lalor, centred on Werribee.

“Little River is a small rural community; it has a shop, a pub, a kindergarten, a school and a community hall,” Ms Ryan said.

“No one would call it a major city and yet it has been classified as a major city and, as a consequence, Little River Primary School has had its outof-school-hours care cut.”

Ms Ryan said the school was granted a waiver for this term.

“I'm standing tonight to ask the new minister (Scott Morrison) if he would relook at this decision.

“Given that the term is nearly over, I call on the minister to relook at Little River and its classification with regard to out-of-school-hours care.

“It's at risk that families will move their children to Werribee, to Lara or to Geelong and take their children to a before-school-hours program on their way to work, kilometres away from their homes.

Parents launched a petition last year to overturn the classification.

The petition preamble said the reclassification would make the service unviable.

Shire rips up fine after claim of victimisation

By NOEL MURPHY SURF Coast Shire has withdrawn a parking fine against surfing legend Maurice Cole after he complained officers targeted him at Bells Beach while ignoring others parked illegally.

Recreational surfers had complained numerous times of tourist buses parking illegally “all day every day” at Bells without penalties, Mr Cole told the Independent.

“Quite a few people came to me after I was fined – they did kind of target me,” Mr Cole said.

“It’s been an ongoing thing since I was charged for pissing in a bush. It’s really sad.”

Mr Cole, a prominent surfboard shaper and 1972 state surfing champion, has been an outspoken critic of the shire’s management of Bells Beach Surfing Reserve in recent years, exposing asbestos, drainage and traffic issues. He and other surfers formed Bells Beach Preservation Society in 2010 after the shire failed to renew their places on its advisory committee for the reserve.

In 2011 the shire had Mr Cole charged with unlawful damage and offensive behaviour at Bells but police later dropped the charges, citing “insufficient evidence“.

Mr Cole said the preservation society recently emailed the shire Maurice Cole protesting the placement of yellow lines restricting where surfers had parked “all our lives”.

He lashed out at the shire for failing to acknowledge the economic impact of recreational surfing.

“Surfing Victoria figures say we contributed more than $200 million to the local economy and yet not one dollar is spent in this shire on recreational surfers.

“They don’t understand recreational surfers and it’s a real culture here that was born here and or-

Functions could be ‘disturbance’, says application

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN NEWTOWN residents face “sleep disturbance“ from a function centre hosting weddings and parties at Sacred Heart College, according to a planning permit application.

The school has applied to change its food technology building into a function centre with a liquor licence.

The college said it was using the 173-squaremetre builiding - with three kitchens and a 120seat dining room - for school events but wanted it also available for hire.

The application to City Hall proposed that the venue would operate until 11pm Fridays and Saturdays, 10pm Mondays to Thursdays and 9pm Sundays.

“Activities occurring on-site during the nighttime period have the potential to cause sleep disturbance for the nearby residents,” the application said.

“These include activities associated with patrons’ use of the facility, such as vehicle movements in car parks, and conversation and laughter.”

The application said installation and calibration of a noise-limiter system could help keep the music down.

Installation of screens on an outdoor deck with space for up to 70 patrons would keep noise to acceptable levels.

The application said the college had applied to Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation for a restaurant and cafe liquor licence.

The centre would be unavailable for external hire during the school day, on public holidays or from the middle of December until the second week of January.

Sacred Heart director of development Kath Walsh said the function centre would be used in conjunction with the college’s trade training centre where students studied hospitality.

She said it would act as a training restaurant similar to Gordon Institute of TAFE’s Davidson Restaurant and Café on Track.

The centre would host “low-key” events, lunches and dinners as well as school functions, Ms Walsh said.

Forum heats up trawler brawl

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN THE BATTLE between commercial and recreational fishers over controversial trawler Geelong Star has sharpened following a forum between both groups.

The 90-metre floating fishing factory will be based at Geelong while it takes a quota of 16,500 tonnes from Australian Small Pelagic Fishery (SPF), stretching from Queensland to Perth.

Seafish Tasmania is bringing the trawler to Geelong, creating 60 jobs and injecting $20 million a year into the local economy.

But the vessel faces opposition from Stop the Trawler Alliance, including environmentalists and recreational anglers.

Federal agriculture parliamentary secretary Senator Richard Colbeck said the alliance had lost credibility and slurred the reputation of well-regarded organisations over scientific backing for the trawler.

“For the alliance to make the claim that there is no new science (supporting the trawling) before even attending (the) stakeholder consultation forum is completely devoid of any credibility,” Mr Colbeck said.

“We’re committed to engaging with recreational and environmental stakeholders and providing them with the latest available information.”

Mr Colbeck said he was disappointed that some groups had taken a political stance and boycotted previous public consultation processes.

“I encourage stakeholders to take the time to attend these forums and to review the latest science that shows us that the SPF can be fished sustainably,” he said.

Small Pelagic Fishery Industry Association chairman Grahame Turk said commercial fishing in the SPF was a

value-added sustainable industry for Australia.

“By catching and freezing omega3-oil-rich small pelagic fish at sea the Geelong Star is creating highly nutritious food to be eaten by humans in Australia and on export markets,” Mr Turk said.

“This is a value added industry that takes a resource previously worth cents per kilogram and creates a resource worth dollars per kilogram.

“This and sports fishing for trophy species like tuna and marlin can co-exist.

“Future discussions will explore whether the concerns raised by recre-

ational fishers about proximity of commercial fishing activities to recreational fishing activities can be addressed by adapting where and when commercial fishing occurs.

In practical terms this may mean where fishing clubs are holding a competition to hunt for tuna or billfish such as marlin, vessels such as the Geelong Star may ensure they’re fishing elsewhere in the fishery during the run-up to the competition so there’s no perception that commercial fishing activities have interrupted the natural roamings of the game fish favoured by recreational fishers.”

Queenscliff festival schedule to have edge on diversity RDA body stays ISSUES ranging from Aboriginal disadtantage to the treatment of refugees and the LGBTI community will be on the agenda at a Queenscliff festival.

Organisers officially launched the Sacrededge Festival this week, promising the event would also explore themes around mental well-being, contemporary spirituality and sustainability.

The town’s Uniting Church will host the event over the first three days in May. The diverse festival schedule covers everything from singers to speakers and random weaving.

The organisers said musical performers would vary from indigenous artist Archie Roach to ’70s pop star and former Australian Idol judge Mark Holden.

Speakers include Geelong homophobia campaigner Daniel Witthaus and Shanaka Fernando, founder of café chain Lentil as Anything where customers give what they feel the food is worth.

Other events on the schedule include a Bosnian dinner and meditative opportunities.

A COMMITTEE advising government on local funding priorities will be retained, with Federal Government calling for expressions of interest from business and community leaders.

The election of a new government in 2013 raised fears the Regional Development Australia (RDA) system would be changed. The RDA’s Barwon South West committee has won funding for Geelong’s library redevelopment, a Lethbridge Intensive Agriculture Precinct project and Geelong Centre for Emerging Infectious Disease.

Committee member Elaine Carbines said retention of the system was good news.

The existing committee’s term would expire at the end of June, she said.

“The current committee is still working, using state funds, and there’s a live round of applications to the $200 million Federal National Stronger Regions fund open, to be announced in May. “Geelong has applied for funding for the Leopold Community Hub, Queenscliff for its lighthouse precinct project and Surf Coast for the Torquay North children’s services hub.

“The second National Stronger Regions round opens at the beginning of May so applications are being prepared for that.”

Ms Carbines, the chief of the region’s councils alliance body, G21, said she would re-apply for the committee.

First 120-year-old ‘on the way’, says expert

By NOEL MURPHY AUSSIES are living longer and the number of 100-year-olds will jump to 40,000 over the next 40 years, a forum in Geelong has heard.

Indeed, the first person to live to 120 is already among us but has yet to reach the milestone, according to one of the forum’s aged care experts.

Trevor Carr said the life expectancy of a newborn was now 91.5 and 93.6 years for males and females respectively but over the next 40 years would rise to 95.1 and 96.6 a far cry from the mid-70s of just 20 years ago.

The figures meant older people and more of them, he said, with the number of over-65s in the Barwon region to jump 22 per cent by 2050.

“Industry sustainability, with that changing demographic, is a pretty big issue,” said Mr Carr, the forum’s keynote speaker and chief executive officer of Leading Aged Services Australia.

“We’ve got more and more demand because you’ve got a bigger cohort of people looking for services and they’re government funded. That sort of change is a big part of it.

“We’ve already seen changes to co-contributions from people who can afford it.

“The Baby Boomers are typified as having a little bit more wealth than the previous generation and they’re going to have more purchasing power, so there’s a lot more happening in the home-care environment than resi-care, that’s the growth part of it.”

Mr Carr said the aged care debate was focussing about what assets should be taken into account “in analysing a person’s capability to pay for some of that”.

The issue would become a “contemporary discussion for the next three years” moving toward a 2017 review of the 20-year-old Aged Care Act, he said.

The impact of the increasing aged population on Australia’s workforce was also a big issue, Mr Carr said.

Art dealer sweats on fraud case

By NOEL MURPHY GEELONG art dealer Peter Gant is awaiting a Melbourne Magistrates’ Court ruling to find out whether he will go to trial over the alleged fraudulent sale of Brett Whiteley paintings.

Magistrate Suzie Cameron has deferred her findings following a week-long hearing into an alleged $4.5 million scam involving three masterpieces by the late Whiteley, who died of a drug overdose more than 20 years ago.

The paintings – Orange Lavender Bay, Big Blue Lavender Bay and Lavender Bay Through the Window – were allegedly sold for $1.1 million, $2.5 million and $950,000 respectively to luxury car dealer Steven Nateski, Sydney Swans chairman and merchant banker Andrew Pridham, and to a Melbourne restaurateur to cover outstanding debts.

Mr Gant, 59, who ran Melbourne’s Irascible Gallery, faces three counts of obtaining a financial advantage by deception and one of attempting to

obtain a financial advantage by deception.

The late Dr John Colquhoun, once employed to promote fluoridation throughout New Zealand, wrote a very enlightening article, ‘Why I changed my mind about water fluoridation’, which made the same supposition as KW Oakley.

Sooner or later fluoridations promoters will have to eat humble pie because anyone who researches this topic with an open mind soon realises fluoridation is not safe.

In Australia alone, removing huge quantities of iron ore, bauxite, uranium, and coal has made Australia lighter. These resources have been shipped to countries at the other end of the world, thus making the northern hemisphere heavier and our globe has become lop-sided.

This has caused a rocking motion in our relationship to the Sun, producing fluctuations in our seasons and the normal seasonal balance.

The results are drier winters and cooler summers or wetter winters and hotter summers depending on the degree of global imbalance we are causing through the removal and transportation of the Earth’s crust.

Sadly, he has also yet to discharge a mortgage on a very, very humble family home despite squatting on a good six-figure salary in the public service for decades.

EVERYBODY should have a right to have their opinions heard, even climate sceptics.

However, the Independent should avoid printing letters that contain clear untruths.

Peter Rees wrote that “global warming stopped about 15 to 18 years ago” (Letters, 13 March). He had produced a distorted opinion by cherry-picking data, pointing to an unseasonably warm year in 1998, since surpassed more than once.

I have challenged sceptics to prove global warming has stopped, with two conditions: first, they must rely on long-term trends; second, the data must be based on Earth’s total heat content, a true reflection of global warming.

They cannot do this because Earth’s total heat content grows consistently year by year.

I and others have proved their claims wrong but they simply repeat them and the Independent prints them.

Kelly brothers ‘loud’ at GPAC

By NOEL MURPHY FEW FIGURES in Australian history command as much attention as bushranger Ned Kelly.

Loved and hated alike, stories and accounts of Kelly range from hard fact to wild fiction with everything in between.

His iconic helmet features in artworks from Sidney Nolan’s trademark series to filmmaker Nadia Tass’ Malcolm with its remote-controlled ashtray bandits suspiciously like Kelly’s armour.

He’s been celebrated in song and film – Mick Jagger played him in the 1970s – as well as in book, verse and documentary.

His bones were desecrated by authorities, his skull is missing, his gang’s armour was chronically displayed incorrectly, author Peter Carey had him in love with his cousin and the descendants of black trackers who helped police pursue him have long moaned about outstanding payments.

Ned Kelly’s name has become a byword for courage; an Australian Robin Hood supporter of the underdog.

A dramatic new play, Kelly, headed Geelong’s way takes the story in yet another direction.

The Queensland Theatre company production has Kelly in a grimy cell at the Old Melbourne Gaol the night before his execution when his brother and fellow

gang member Dan, who Ned believes had died at the siege in Glenrowan, visits disguised as a priest.

He’s seeking Kelly’s blessing and forgiveness but the last time they saw each other Dan tried to shoot Ned. And so begins a brutal confrontation.

Facing the sins of their past, each blames the other for their downfall. And neither will escape unharmed.

Exploring the themes of masculinity, brotherhood and the dangerous dynamic of mateship, Kelly raises the oft-raised question about the Kellys – where they cowards, murderers or heroes?

“Modern Australian theatre has been curiously silent about Ned Kelly,” said writer Matthew Ryan.

“I intend to fill that silence.

Loudly.”

And he just might – but he’s unlikely to be the last to do so.

Silvers Circus at showgrounds SILVERS Circus has returned to Geelong for the school holidays.

The circus premiered at Geelong Showgrounds on Wednesday night and will continue wowing local audiences until 12 April under the guidance of ring master and illusionist Simon Tait.

A household name after almost four decades on the road in Australia, Silvers features all the sparkle, glamour and death-defying acts expected of Australiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s premier circus.

Each two-hour show under the big tip features more than 11 exciting international acts.

Museum fun daily for kids GEELONG’S National Wool Museum has some great activities for school holidays.

Kids will love You Are Here! Geelong Under Construction, running at the museum until 17 May. The exhibition is essentially an ongoing construction project in which children can flag where they live on a map and construct their favourite building, fountain, park, school or stadium from recycled, reclaimed and reused materials.

Rock on throughout holidays THE Rock Adventure Centre is open over school holidays with indoor climbing in a safe, controlled environment.

Indoor rock climbing is terrific low-impact exercise, using all muscles simultaneously.

It’s also a great option for grandparents to entertain grandchildren during holidays.

The Rock’s climbing walls are sculptured and textured to resemble the real thing. Up to 12 metres high, the walls are studded with coloured climbing holds of various sizes and shapes.

Each climber wears a harness with a safety rope attached.

The rope belay system provides a safe, controlled descent when the climber wants to come down or in the event of a fall.

IndySport Joeys ripe for cup win THIRTEEN premiership cups are up for grabs in local cricket this weekend when everything goes on the line for 26 teams.

In the division one firsts, North Geelong plays St Joseph’s at Stinton Oval, Queen’s Park, for the ultimate prize in local cricket.

Both sides had resounding wins last week.

North Geelong batted first against East Belmont, and, with a fine captain’s knock of 76 to Jake Thorne, scrapped its way to a competitive score of 217.

But when Tom Mathieson (3/32) and Cam Alford (3/57) ripped through the Lions’ top order on Sunday to leave them 4/19, 218 suddenly looked a long way away.

Matt Lineker (59) showed his class to get back on level terms at 4/90 but when Zac Thorne (4/24) removed him the rest of the East batsmen fell for just 138.

St Joseph’s bowled first in its preliminary final against Geelong City.

Tom Elliott (76) laid a good foundation but Justin Foss (5/41) and David Morgan (3/58) ensured regular wickets fell to have City all-out for 202 on a good batting track.

The Sharks weren’t going to lay down, though, and on Sunday morning quickly had Joeys in trouble at 3/30 thanks to a fine opening spell from Kent Agg (3/51).

But from there David Morgan (107 not-out) stood tall with a magnificent century to escort his side through to the big dance with a six-wicket win.

This weekend’s game will be a cracker, with so many stars in both line-ups.

As always in finals, the toss will be crucial but St Joseph’s chase of a competitive target while defending a small total against the Magpies two weeks ago will give Joeys the belief to go back to back.

Other grades selections: EAST BELMONT v Grovedale, North Geelong v ST JOSEPH’S, Geelong City v LARA. In division two its the old versus the new, with the experienced Thomson taking on the young guns from Marshall on their home ground in what will be an intriguing grand final.

Thomson made 183 last Saturday, with skipper Grant Dew (50) finding form and Jonny Kettle (47) lending a hand.

In reply, Highton started disastrously, losing three wickets for zero runs, and never recovered, finishing all-out for a disappointing 72.

Brett Anderton (4/18) was the pick of the bowlers.

Marshall won its way through with a miraculous win over St Peter’s.

Defending just 139, St Peter’s was as good as home at 7/138 but incredibly lost three for none to lose by one run.

Jake Dubbledam (2/1) took a pair of the three final wickets in one of the most amazing finishes those lucky enough to have witnessed it would have seen.

While Thomson has the experience, Marshall will go in with the exuberance of youth and a nothing-to-lose attitude, which just might win the cup.

Other grades selections: Highton v TORQUAY, ST PETER’S v Highton, Torquay v ST PETER’S. And in division three, Teesdale plays Meredith at Winchelsea Reserve.

Both teams flexed their considerable muscles last week with dominant wins.

Meredith thrashed Inverleigh, making 259 on Saturday, before bowling the opposition out cheaply for just 99.

Teesdale restricted Shelford to 199, a score it reeled in without losing a wicket as Shaun Campbell finishing the day 99 not-out.

This is a hard game to pick but Teesdale just seems to know how to win grand finals, while Meredith has a history of doing the opposite.

Phil’s flaked out GREETED with calm conditions Sunday morning, Phil Walters and Ray Beeden made daybreak and headed out from St Leonards.

They anchored in 23 metres of water where small flathead ravenous devoured most of their baits until a school of Australian salmon moved in, improving the sport and offering ideal fresh bait. Then the fishing really intensified, with the pair landing a small seven gill shark and a gummy of 6.1kg.

Other anglers who fished St Leonards found squid in good numbers both from the pier and boats, with size 3 jigs working best.

Whiting were also about, with the entrance to Swan Bay producing to 43cm.

Queenscliff Harbour’s held great numbers of silver trevally on the tide changes. Soft plastics such as Z-Man grubs and Gulp Turtleback worms on jig heads heavy enough to reach the bottom worked well.

Some big squid were taken from the bight outside the harbour, with drifting the deeper water returning good results.

Kingfish reports slowed this week, possibly due to the drop in water temperature. However, they should hang around until at least Easter, with some beasts usually boated around the end of the kingfish season.

I fished in excellent conditions off Barwon Heads on Sunday morning but without any success in finding kingfish. Some tip-offs helped me find a small school of Australian salmon, which produced fish close to 3kg on soft plastics.

Elephant fish remain a solid option in the Barwon River estuary, with some up to 5kg. The best baits were squid strips and pilchards, while the section of river above the end of Sheepwash Rd was the most productive.

Bream were caught in the same area, with Bass yabbies the favoured bait.

Out of town, Warrnambool was a hotspot for bluefin tuna near the offshore boat ramp and just further out. Casting small metal lures or trolling smaller skirted lures worked well on these easily accessible fish.

Fishing World Geelong’s Michael Moore spent a week fishing the Glenelg River on the VictoriaSouth Australia border. Michael caught great numbers of bream, estuary perch and mulloway.

Michael said a light hanging from the deck of his rented houseboat attracted huge schools of whitebait, making for a handy bait supply. While lure fishing during the day he noted that whitebait-imitation lures worked best.

On the freshwater front, Michael Evans had success at Wurdee Boluc Reservoir. Using the reliable Fish Arrow soft plastics, he banked a healthy brown trout of 45cm.

Other anglers caught redfin to 45cm by casting out beyond the weed banks to find a school of fish.

Further down the road, Lake Purrumbete produced brown trout to 2kg for anglers down-rigging cow bells and hard-body lures. The best depth was 15m along the east bank at first light.

Next week anglers should try the kingfish either in The Rip or offshore from Barwon Heads, keeping eyes peeled for schools of surface feeding fish.

Whiting should be holding in good numbers off Swan Bay, with the start of the run-out tide normally best.

The Barwon Estuary should be A worthwhile option for bream and elephant fish, while anyone with time to travel could try Warrnambool or Port Fairy for tuna.

Warriors to get defensive in clash with Pascoe Vale

By JOSIP ZILIC NORTH Geelong Warriors’ will seek improvements in the defensive aspects of its game for its National Premier League clash with Pascoe Vale tomorrow.

The match follows last weekend’s classic arm-wrestle with Hume City, which the Warriors lost 4-3.

Pascoe Vale will visit Elcho Park after its first win of 2015 last week, a 1-0 defeat of Oakleigh.

The Warriors’ home form has yet to produce premiership points in 2015, so Micky Colina will be keen

to reward the faithful and develop a reputation for Elcho Park as a fearsome place for visitors.

In-form Warrior Robbie Zadworny, who took his season’s goal tally to five last weekend after scoring two against Hume City, will lead the way for the other forwards to get in on the action.

Zadworny opened the scoring in the Hume loss with a 19th-minute header from a Juso Julardzija corner.

The lead lasted until the 42nd minute when Hume equalised through Shane Rexhepi.

At the restart Hume pressed hard

and within three minutes Jai Ingham finished a Calvin Mbarga darting run and through-ball.

Then in the 56th minute the Warriors were given reason to rejoice when Zadworny popped up again to head home and level the scores 2-2.

With the match entering the final 10 minutes, it was Hume’s Ingham again capitalised on a Mbarga through-ball to put the home side up 3-2.

Not to be outdone, the Warriors stepped up their performance with the youthful energy in Tomo Trbuhovic and Nikola Jurkovic to offer some drive.

The pressure paid off when Zadworny was upended for a penalty in the 94th minute, which skipper Matthew Townley coolly dispatched in what spectators thought would be the final play of the day.

Hume City had other thoughts at the restart, surging into the box where a header across the goal resulted in a scramble for Petar Franjic to nudge the ball over the line for the 96th minute sealer.

The Pascoe Vale game at Elcho Park will kick off at 3pm for the under-20s and 5pm for the main game.
